Any pro reviews on this yet...the 1k battle is getting fierce. Can't wait to hear from more like you...screenshots...impressions.
mikelike2 11-09-09, 07:35 PM No 12v screen trigger? I'm really interested in this projector but I need the trigger.
No 12v screen trigger? I'm really interested in this projector but I need the trigger.
Triggers are pretty easy DIY but I agree would have been nice.
good morning from germany,
at first excuse me about my english, its along time ago i wrote this language...25 years or something.
in germany the w1000 was handled like a stepmother, people no really intressed at this pj.
so i´m funny to see here at avs some posts from intresting users.
I´ve opened a thread in germanys "*********" that the hqc-chip is on the benq.
It was written at benq datas till october 26. the new datas since 26 october till today, there is no hqv listed.
anyone here know more facts ?
Stix2, I´m very curious abot your test and report.
greetings
Oh and I almost forgot. I ordered my projector people and they were the greatest bunch of people I ever had the pleasure to deal with. I could not recommend them more for how they fixed a glitch in the website that caused my order to be lost.
I called them the next morning and talked with Kirk who was excellent. Took my info E-mailed me what was going on every step of the way and made me a customer for life. This is the kind of service we lack from alot of places nowadays.
Props to them for being a great place to shop.
Projector has arrived!!! Testing will begin a bit later tonight. Pics and info will be forthcoming soon :D

Arken.ca 11-11-09, 02:42 PM Could owners of the w1000 please reply if there is any mention of what chip it uses for processing (reon, pixelworks?) in the manual.
Also, I'd really appreciate it if they could do a lag test for us gamers. Either using the Rock Band 2 lag test if you have it, or using the method described in the lag test thread in the $3000 and over forums, preferably testing it against a CRT monitor if you have one.

Thanks.
The vapor has cleared!
Way to go Stix
Odd way to slip a pj out into the market given the competition but maybe they're hoping to become the underground hit of the year.
early specs did list the reon, which would be a big deal at this level, as is the unishape, looking forward to the std screen shots (if you have fifth element, etc.) and your impressions. We all owe something to the folks who are willing to be first.
clskinsfan 11-11-09, 03:19 PM Glad to see someone actually has one in hand. Cant wait to hear your thoughts.
streetcredit 11-11-09, 03:35 PM Also interested in image quality and fan noise....thanks
Thanks all. Well it is being installed now I have to go to hardware store. Should have up and running in a few hours then I can get into specs.
ok...well, get to goin' :)
I will say the amount of calibrating you can do with this is incredible.

hallo stix,

i have a hard day tomorrow and go to bed...and when i´m awakening my first todoo is to look here int the forum...go on!!!
greetings
Up and running got a bit of aligning to do. First impression. First thing I noticed was blacks and then the colors out of the box are excellent. Will get some screens up soon as I get aligned.
First impression is very good.
Jim McC 11-11-09, 06:17 PM What is the offset and color wheel speed? Thanks.
Stix...how's it feel to be the dude in the hotchair right now. I'm not sure who is more excited...me or you. Heck, I don't even have a pj right now...still deciding on my next one thanks to you and others.
What is the offset and color wheel speed? Thanks.
Looking that up still reading thru.
Couple pics. I cannot focus on screen for clear pics but here are some with fully lit room and no light.
Fully lit first then total dark

Says nothing of color wheel but I see no RBE yet and did not with the others except for vivitek.
Stix2,
The pictures look great! I don't see much difference in the pictures in fully lit and dark room. What type of screen do you have?
I am planning to buy my first projector, and I am thinking of either Optoma HD20 or Benq. Your review will definitely help me to decide which one. Keep going. Thanks.
Nice. I sure would like to only have to spend a grand though my budget is a little higher. I'm much more audiophile than videophile but appreciate something that looks good. Still deciding...thanks for the info/pics. Btw...are these out of box images?
This projector is very bright mimicking the vivitek but colors and black levels are superior to the other 2 in this price range. The pop on this projector is just awesome to see.
I am still searching for the colorwheel speed but am suspecting 4x. I cant wait to tweak and see how much better I can do but out of the box it really looks great.
Still testing these are just ongoing impressions

Yes nothing touched just in cinema mode.
This projector definitely has the better blacks of the 3.
Awesome. You refer to the hd20 and vivitek...right? Which pj are you coming from if any? And this new benq lists how much?
How about a picture of the room/screen wall for reference.
For my 120" screen offset was 8.82" and 13' back. The color wheel when I called he believes the colorwheel is actually 6x but thats unconfirmed they are Emailing me more info tomorrow.

Will do. Yes I refer to the HD20 and vivitek. I came from a HD65
Seems like this unit will be topgun for the 1k price mark...wonder how it will standup to the mitz3800...hhmmmm? and will the mitz be worth the few extra coin...thoughts, thoughts. Honestly, I will more than likely be happy with any of these 'entry' level 1080p units...just want to get the 'best' one if I am going to spend...know what I mean.

Still testing will see what happens, Unit is very quiet. I knew the hd65 was running. The benq I cannot tell when its running.
streetcredit 11-11-09, 08:13 PM Thanks for the info Stix2, I currently have the hd65 and am bothered a bit by the fan noise, is the fan noise significantly lower....can you give more info using optoma hd65 as baseline, color, sharpness black level etc...
Thanks for the info Stix2, I currently have the hd65 and am bothered a bit by the fan noise, is the fan noise significantly lower....can you give more info using optoma hd65 as baseline, color, sharpness black level etc...
Will shortly.
Color wheel IS 4X RYGCWB 6 segments
Filter segment - Degree - TBD
Filter diameter - mm - 44
Reliability is an issue for me as I would most likely keep unit for years. How do the Benq's standup...good track record or what...anybody?

How does it compare to the HD65?? It slaps it around. Fan noise is atleast 8db lower I can't even hear it run unless I get close. Color is superior by far. Blacks its not even close.
This projector is razor sharp. As is the HD 20 its close on that front. As far as HD65 the benq bests it here aswell.
The HD20 and the Benq are the top 2 of the three out. So far if I had to pick one at this moment. I would choose the Benq. The colors this puts out is just beautiful.
And you are in eco mode/low mode? Where did you purchase from?
TCARCIO 11-11-09, 08:44 PM Reliability is an issue for me as I would most likely keep unit for years. How do the Benq's standup...good track record or what...anybody?
Well I can say that I still have my Benq PE7800 and it is still on the original bulb that has 2000hrs on it and it is still going strong. I have had zero issues with this PJ and it is used daily. I am looking at the 1000 also but I am debating on that or a new sub, decisions, decisions.... :)
And you are in eco mode/low mode? Where did you purchase from?
Eco mode and I bought from projector people.
Well, decisions... decisions!! Optoma HD20 is now for $789. Must be the heated competition now with Benq.
It needs to be. This projector has more color controls and you can actually turn off BC if ya want and looks better than the HD20.
Here is the room. Still being worked on so excuse the horrific HT room. Rerouting wires and changing carpet also adding permanent highs and wides.

Schnittke 11-11-09, 09:05 PM How does it look to you, in regards to the rainbow effect?
I just bought the BenQ W1000 today. The staff in the store had just put the w1000 up in the demo room so I saw a demonstration of the projector completely "out-of-the-box".
And what I saw was a beautiful picture and quite alot of rainbows. The staff told me that the rainbow effect will wear off by time, and that it would be greatly reduced after I calibrate the damn thing with a so called "JKP DVE HD Basics Calibration"-bluray they gave me.
After some surfing around on different fora, I get the impression that they lied, and I am now happy that I haven't unboxed the projector...
Calibrating the projector won't reduce RBE, will it? Is there anything at all you can do about that annoying effect, besides putting filters on your lense, and reducing the brightness?
Sorry for my bad english!

Yes turn down the brightness go into econo mode. High lamp will give alot more rainbows. Once calibrated they can and for me did go away on my hd65.
This has the same speed and colorwheel of my hd65 and I seen rainbows on that at first. When bulb broke in and calibrated all was good.
This projector is so bright out of the box you will see rainbows if your sensitive. Turn to econo from standard. After that you should be alot better and even more so after calibrating.
The picture out of the box is beautiful yet will blind you when a bright white screen pops up heh.
Schnittke 11-11-09, 09:24 PM Thanks for the quick reply, Stix2!
That sounds good! So the W1000 has an Economode? It just feels strange to pay alot of money (here in Denmark the BenQ W1000 costs around 1700$) for something you don't know whether you'll be able to use. If it doesn't get better, and stays the rainbowy way it was in the store, the money will be effectively wasted for me...
Guess I'll roll a dice and thereby decide whether to return the projector or not :)
P.S.: People talk alot about the LCD projector as a alternative to the DLP to RBE sensitive persons. Does any LCD projector exist in the W1000 price range and quality?
This time I'll say sorry for my noobishness...
ED sub...nice. I have never heard of rbe going away or being diminished. You are either susceptible or not. My old 4805 4x did not give me issues. If it did it happened so quickly that I did not notice which is the case for many.
Thanks for the quick reply, Stix2!

LCD for us 1000...no. Though the Epson 8100 is very good machine at 1500us.

Infocus x10 I believe. Its not as good as this one but would be a fine LCD. You can get better for a bit more.

+1 thats another good one. Much better than my example :)
Well I can say that I still have my Benq PE7800 and it is still on the original bulb that has 2000hrs on it and it is still going strong. I have had zero issues with this PJ and it is used daily. I am looking at the 1000 also but I am debating on that or a new sub, decisions, decisions.... :)
That's tough. I upgraded my sub and what a difference. Shakes the room...but fast and clean...not loose. If you are satisfied with picture now I would opt for a new sub. Your budget will get you a killer one with change to spare. Buy a hsu 3 mk3 and keep a couple hundred in your pocket. It will suffice a lot longer than a pj will. Food for thought. Not trying to spend your money for you though. I have a killer sub and broken pj so you know where my money is going.;)
ED sub...nice. I have never heard of rbe going away or being diminished. You are either susceptible or not. My old 4805 4x did not give me issues. If it did it happened so quickly that I did not notice which is the case for many.
Yep went away with me. Its true it can and does for alot some never. You can train yourself to see them aswell. And untrain yourself. Its pretty easy to do.
Viewsonic pro8100
Same price range? unless I'm seeing things( I don't think my imac is dlp :)) this thing is 2k+

I have read a description of what they look like and I swear I can't see such a thing...every now and again I would get what seemed to be a lightning quick refocus on my eyes part...but I think it was b/c my eyes were tired or something. Perhaps it was rbe...not enuf to bother me.
I taught myself to see them by darting eyes from one side of the screen to another. Gonna calibrate this tomorrow so much reading.

Not unless I break out the old Atari and play some Pong:eek:

No no a personal user. No offense taken :) Just helping spread the info on the machine thats rare in the field atm.

That's great...very nice of you. Much thanks. I'll catch up tmrw...out.
Thanks all for the warning. I am considering Benq after Stix2's reviews.
conradjohnsonfan 11-11-09, 11:29 PM hmmmm.... sounds like I should have waited a couple weeks to buy. Granted, I am extremely satisfied with my HD20, but better on/off contrast would be a very, very welcome thing....
Soggoth 11-12-09, 12:35 AM Screenshots look really great!
Does it support native 24p?
Jim McC 11-12-09, 03:44 AM For my 120" screen offset was 8.82" and 13' back. The color wheel when I called he believes the colorwheel is actually 6x but thats unconfirmed they are Emailing me more info tomorrow.
Will do. Yes I refer to the HD20 and vivitek. I came from a HD65
WOW, that's a pretty small offset. Similiar to the HD20, isn't it guys?
Schnittke 11-12-09, 05:46 AM Yes turn down the brightness go into econo mode. High lamp will give alot more rainbows. Once calibrated they can and for me did go away on my hd65.
Did the same thing happen to you, using the w1000? Seeing RBE at first, and loosing them after Ecomode and lower brightness were used..
Thanks again for keeping us updated! It's a huge help, Stix2!
hmmmm.... sounds like I should have waited a couple weeks to buy. Granted, I am extremely satisfied with my HD20, but better on/off contrast would be a very, very welcome thing....
The HD20 is a great projector. I really like it. But as far as adjustments, brightness and blacks/colors this projector is phenomenal.

Well I am not that sensitive to them but while I was using it last night in standard lamp on a black screen with white I could make myself. In eco mode I could barely make myself. I still have not calibrated the projector.
Screenshots look really great!
Does it support native 24p?
Yes from the paused picture you can see it does 1080p/24
WOW, that's a pretty small offset. Similiar to the HD20, isn't it guys?
Well when I tested the HD20 we were a 100" screen and 7.3" above so I would say they are close yes both around 12-15%
I will be doing some rewiring and hook back up my onkyo 1007 and calibrate the system. I decided to keep the 1007 over the 3007.
Stix2, thanks for sharing you initial thoughts! When you get back to it later today I'd be interested in:
a) in eco mode, the noise level you recall from the HD20 compared to the W1000
b) aspects in which you think the HD20 might be better than the W1000
Thanks!
streetcredit 11-12-09, 09:41 AM Stix2, can you call in sick today....we need more info....lol
Good to hear that it is significantly better than the hd65....can you also pop in a dvd andlet us know how that looks. Somebody mentioned the reon chip, any confirmation? Have you seen the viewsonic pro8100, can you compare it to that one as well.
Stix2, one more question before I pull the trigger. Am I going to see the rainbow effect in Benq everyone is talking about? How bad is it? Are HD20 and W1000 the same in that regard? Thanks.
DooLocsta 11-12-09, 11:51 AM Stix2, one more question before I pull the trigger. Am I going to see the rainbow effect in Benq everyone is talking about? How bad is it? Are HD20 and W1000 the same in that regard? Thanks.
No one is going to be able to tell you if you will or will not see RBE, you just have to check for yourself. Some people are hyper sensitive and see them on a 6X CW yet others never see them on a 2X.
JerzeyJeeper 11-12-09, 03:38 PM Hey Stix,
I guess you won't be replying to the other Benq W1000 thread...
Anyway, so I take it you were VERY unimpressed with the Vivitek H1080FD...seems odd only because I've read a few reviews that rate it better than the Optoma HD20.
Either way, I'm leaning towards buying the Benq W1000 very soon and your impressions will likely weigh heavily on my decision.
Thanks for the feedback! :)
shiseido 11-12-09, 06:26 PM P.S.: People talk alot about the LCD projector as a alternative to the DLP to RBE sensitive persons. Does any LCD projector exist in the W1000 price range and quality?

the epson is more expansive (i live in portugal) but at the same price you have the sanyo plv z700 ;)

I could not answer that. Its different with everybody. But if you are sensitive this is a very bright projector and my increase it.

Well again the slow colorwheel was killer for me. The picture sharpness on the HD20 was better and color was close but IMO I liked the HD20 better. Blacks were close on the 2, But put it this way different people different tastes.
This projector really took me back when I turned it on. Did not think it could get this good out of the box and I still have not calibrated.
Had a loooonnnngggg day at work due to water main break. Now dead tired but did get 1007 rewired and all systems go. But my ass says GOTO BED!!!!
I gonna try to calibrate tonight but need a few minutes to relax.

I thought i read that the optoma was rather loud
I thought i read that the optoma was rather loud
Sorry tired yes the viv was the quieter one that compares my bad sorry. Told ya long day :)
The hd 20 is only a bit quieter when fans kicks in high than the HD65. My HD65 sounded like a hair dryer
Calibrated system DVE video and I must say. I cannot stress enough how good it looks. It is very bright and has great punch. The colors are very accurate and blacks are stunningly good.
This is my take. I wish we could get another more qualified to check but this projector is a step above the rest. Heck if there is any more qualified members in the area to check I would let them in and have a beer.
This projector to me and from the others I seen is worth more than what I paid.
The rainbows may get some as it is 4X wheel. But those not bothered I do not see ANY disappointment in this projector. I actually would expect.... Unexpected surprises from what ya see :)
I did watch a DVD on this and is was good. I still do not know what scaler is in the unit tho

Well, you could put in a really dark movie, like say.. any of the harry potter movies. and put in a really dark scene and tell us just how good the black level is on those.

Thank you Stix2 for your review and your answers to various posters - keep up the great work!
My decision was between the HD20 and the HC3800 - but I think this unit warrants serious consideration. I am keen to hear more feedback on the PJ and am a bit surprised that it has not been professional reviewed yet.

JerzeyJeeper 11-13-09, 08:43 AM Between the Optoma and the Vivitek, I know the cost of replacement was cheaper on the HD20 by about $150.00. Does anybody know the cost of replacement for the bulbs on the Benq?

In Canada the bulbs for the benq go for 300.00 so imagine a little less in the US

Same boat. Was and still am deciding betwen the hd20, 3800 or this w1000...seems like it could be this benq...waiting for Art's pro opinion over at projector reviews which should be very soon.
Stix2 - How does the build quality compare to the HD65? What kind/color is your screen? Are you running it through a receiver, and if so, any handshake issues?
Ok the build qiality is not like the HD65. The HD65 felt better built as did the HD20. I did not think to post on that. It seems a bit more flimsy in the center. It has big opening where the fans are and wide open on the inside as why this unit runs so quiet it gets plenty of air.
I do see any light spilling from around the lens like the HD20/65. I am running it thru the onkyo 1007 and did have issues where it would not sync until I updated the firmware on the onkyo and problems went away.
No problems so far at all.

Thanks. I will either wait a little longer, or go for HD20. It looks like W1000 will not be in stock before 11/24 at PP.

Schnittke 11-13-09, 08:34 PM Finally decided to open the box, and I gotta say: I love my new BenQ W1000 projector! Have had no problems, and the picture is just wonderful (even before calibrating...)
I thought the RBE would be a problem, but ten minuts into Pan's Labyrinth, I had forgotten all about it! Also, it is quiet.

The calibrations I had to due with DVE was minimal. Green was the only color that was slightly out that I had to adjust. Glad you love it. I hope we get some more to see just how good this projector really is.

Certainly! I can only say to The People that they will be shooting themselves in the foot if they don't at least get a demo of this jewel, before deciding which projector to get!
And thanks for giving me that last little push I needed!
keparad 11-14-09, 02:08 PM Hi Stix2,
where did you get this benq w1000? Does it come with a carrying case?
Does anybody know where to get this baby for the lowest price? :)
Thanks a lot ;)
Thanks for the info so far Stix. I decided to pull the trigger and pick one up to replace my Infocus 7210. The 7210 has served me well but I'm really looking forward to some 1080P. 720P seems so... old fashion ;)

keparad 11-15-09, 06:38 AM Hi Stix2, Thanks for the answers...
What is your personal opinion regarding some points below:
1. between vivitek h1080fd and benq w1000, which one is more silent?
2. between benq w1000 and optoma hd20, which one has deeper color (including black level) and better details (resolution) from your eyes?
3. regarding number 2, has you done calibration? how is your opinion afterwards?
Thanks :)

1. They both quiet I would say you would not hear either so I could not answer as I would be recalling from memory did not DB test them. I do tho remember the HD20 a bit louder.
2. Benq easily.
3. Same. It did not need very much adjustment at all.
Thanks :)

120" matte White 1 gain
The manual is crap for specs tho.

Schnittke 11-15-09, 07:52 PM I was wondering, how much have you calibrated the w1000, Stix2? I keep getting the feeling that I like the "Cinema"-mode minus some color for movie watching - even after having used the JFK calibration bluray (or whatever it is called). Is this wrong of me? :)

I am doing the same lol I went down to 50 brightness and turned lamp to Eco mode. Nope its perfectly ok. Like I said the projector picture out of the box is great.

Billbofet 11-15-09, 11:51 PM Hey Stix,
Thanks for posting the manual. I have another question to ask and it's hard to phrase without screenshots.
I currently have a Mitsubishi HD1000U. This model, and I'm not sure if this is normal, has an option in the menu called "vertical location." + or - you can have the image go up or down. I use this in order to mask 2.40 or 2.35:1 material. I am wondering if the BenQ W1000 has this ability.
Here is the screen with my masking drape:

tomdahlberg 11-16-09, 02:08 PM So, I just ordered from Benq Store online for $1029 with shipping (in stock).
Please review this (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/announcement.php?f=68&a=119) before posting again, thanks! I would hate to have another thread closed because of your inability to follow the rules.
Sorry!!!! Won't happen again.
I was going for either the Vivitek or the new HD20 and now I see this projectors out. I was getting nervous about the Vivitek after seeing the screens on the viv thread as it looks like it needs a grey screen to shine.
Does this projector suffer from the same? Or all three as I see you tested them all?

Do not judge it by screenshots in a thread you have to wait for a professional reviews against all 3 or judge for yourself. It does NOT need a grey screen to shine none of the three do.
cjhacker23 11-16-09, 04:31 PM @koolit:
i also saw that on the BenQ store online that the W1000 is listed as "in stock" but when called to verify this with customer service, they said that this was a mistake and that they had no w1000's in stock.
i'm curious to know what the story actually is. could you give us an update if/when you receive yours?
in the meantime, i've settled on projectorpeople. they say i should have it before thanksgiving... but you know how these things go.

You are correct. I placed an order, which said in stock, ships within 1-2 business days. But, when I received the email receipt, it said backordered. So, I just canceled my order. I am just disappointed with the service by Benq and ProjectorPeople. I may just go for HD20 package from visualapex. Not sure yet.

Thanks, Stix2. I was a little disappointed by PP's service. The sales rep would not call me at all, and just communicate by email with no info on what I was looking for. I was trying to place an order since last Thursday, and I still haven't been able to (for the projector package). They don't have an online ordering for projector package.
I am almost done with my HT, and I need a projector within a week. So, I may just go with HD20.

Where can I find an install/placement calculator for the w1000 if it has not been requested...or if it has :)
Billbofet...where do find info concerning mitz3800 having lens shift...? Don't think so. It has fixed offset...you get what you get except for the 'tilting' it option.
Where can I find an install/placement calculator for the w1000 if it has not been requested...or if it has :)
http://www.benq.com/product/projector/calculator/
Based on this low offset I could possibly shelf mount this thing if I am reading the calculator correctly. If I celing mount the screen would have to be too high for my liking as I would have to look up a bit from 10 ft away on to a 90 in screen....hmmmm? Or I go with a longer post on my mount which I would rather not do either bc I don't want to hit my head and besides it would be an eyesore in the living room. This stuff is driving me bananas!!! I just want a damn new pj for crying out loud!!! Maybe lcd with lens shift would be better. Aarrrghghghgh!

mnnc,
It's not lens shift. It's an option in the menu called "vertical location." I looked over the 3800's manual and it's in there and I even think I confirmed it on the 3800 thread with someone who has one now.
It's a poor man's lens shift since it just moves the 2.40 material up (or down) and puts the black box information below. On my screen, the black bars were a 12" line on top and 12" line on the bottom of the picture. With this, it just projects all that below the image.
Just looked it up in the 3800 manual. It's listed on page 10, 25, and 26. It can be adjusted + or - 26.
Billbofet 11-16-09, 11:57 PM Found this tidbit of info on projectorpoint.co.uk
Our review on the BenQ W1000 Projector
Limited Stock now available.
Having taken a brief look at a pre-production BenQ W1000 in our demo room, producing 2000 lumens brightness and a 3000:1 Contrast Ratio the W1000 is a great choice if you want to view your movies or tv with low level lighting on or if you cant control Ambient Light in the room.
Numerous video inputs allow simultaneous connection of such sources as PlayStation 3, XBOX 360, Blu ray dvd player and a PC using the remote to flick between them.
Colours are rich, vibrant and crisp. Out of the box colour presets acheive natural lifelike skin tones whilst black levels at this price point are the best we have seen to date.
- Granted, this is not a real review, it supports Stix on the black levels he's been liking on the W1000.
The projection table in the manual (p.17) shows a vertical offset of ~30%, but the online calculator shows 15%.
Just to be 100% sure - can anyone confirm the 15%?
Thanks!
I am 8" up and 13' back fron a 120" screen. So I would say its 15%
I'm looking to replace Dell 3300mp, which I also use for work presentations. My current ceiling mount set up is 8'10" up hung from vaulted ceiling and 16' from 106" screen (92" wide). I have flexibility to swing Draper SMS ceiling mount forward if needed.
This pj caught my eye bc it doesn't look too big to also be portable for a presentation with laptop when needed.
Can anyone tell me for sure if this pj would work with my current ceiling mount location? I'm thinking it would just make it for my screen size and distance if I read the placement calc right. But not sure. Also, the website doesn't say if it is mac compatible.
Billbofet...Ok...I stand corrected. Thanks. That is a nice feature that other inexpensive models don't have.
Stix,
My room setup for my old projector had a distance of 13.7 ft. But my screen is only 92" diagonal.
Would you know if I can zoom it down to that in a 'real world' situation? I'm not sure about the calculator's accuracy on it (it says I can't).
I *could* move the ceiling mount, but I'd prefer not to. Right now it aligns perfectly with the chairs.
Thanks!

No you would need to move it forward or better yet get a bigger screen!! lol. You would be at 120" or so without zooming.

Never tried I upconvert everything to 1080p from the onkyo. I change reso's on computer and it looks good. I would venture to say the pic is a bit soft on 720P. But looks good on 1080i
I ordered one from Projector People over the weekend and got a shipping confirmation today so it looks like they are back in stock. I imagine they will have some backlog to fill before they start shipping new orders though.
Stix,
If its not too much to ask, could you try out some standard def content, like TV, and let us know how it looks, please?
I would be using this for some TV and streaming Netflix as well (which is only HD sometimes, if I have a good connection that day).
Thanks!

Doesn't seem to be any consistent information. Could you let us know when your projector arrives?

Don't know about the Benq, but I will say that in the same price class the Optoma HD20 does what you want.
Looks like I can shoe-horn the Benq into my room to work on my screen by moving it forward about a foot. That works furniture-position-wise but still means unscrewing and rescrewing the ceiling mount.
Looks like the Mitsubishi HC3800 can do what I need without moving the install, though. Obviously at a fairly solid increase in cost.
So, now I'm curious, how does the Benq perform compared with the Mitsubishi? Is it worth the cost increase?

I don't see any pro reviews of benq to compare it with HC8300. HC3800 is always compared with HD20 and it surpasses in most aspects but price. How far is it from HD20? Can't tell if the BenQ W100 is in between somewhere or near to anyone of these!!
Well according to stix...you listening stix, the w1000 has better color, blks, and pop out of the box than his hd20. If this is remotely true, then you can bet it tops the hd20 overall. The real question is how close will it get to the mitz3800 which Art/projector reviews prefers over the Epson 8100 for film but liked the extra lumens of the Epson for day/hdtv viewing. Not to get OT because the eps is in a whole diff price zone and the mitz3800 is a few hundred more than the thousand mark. Strictly based on the 1k price mark...my call is the benq1000, could be wrong...we'll see. If the benq1000 gets close to the 3800 in areas it will be a modern marvel based on price/performace ratio and will be on my ceiling.

Indeed it does beat out the HD20 :)
Stix,
If its not too much to ask, could you try out some standard def content, like TV, and let us know how it looks, please?
I would be using this for some TV and streaming Netflix as well (which is only HD sometimes, if I have a good connection that day).
Thanks!

Ok...I'm going to say it..."Wow" Hidef tv looks very nice as do the br's. It's my understanding the upconverted dvd thru something like my oppo will look great as well. This is the w1000 right stixx? Damn nice looking picture there...has that 3-d look at first glance. Nice indeed. Can't wait for some more impressions/reviews. This is really helping me decide as I'm going nuts here with money to spend and no pjless...old one broke as I have mentioned.

Yes it is. The sharpness is not shown to good as I had to hold camera no tripod. But yea that is the W1000. Looks a hell of a lot better in person :)
The pop this projector has is simply amazing.
Off to watch a movie :)

clskinsfan 11-19-09, 03:11 PM Does anyone know if the mounting points are the same as the PE7700? Was wondering if my current mount would work with the PJ?
EManT2200 11-19-09, 09:26 PM Stix2,
Hi, is it possible to get to the gain and bias of the red, blue, and green settings through the user menu. I looked through the user manual and noticed only the gain referenced, does BenQ use another name for the bias ? I ask because if I get this projector I would want to do a greyscale calibration. I plan on using a screen somewhere between 80" and 90". I have a small living room, only about 13.5' X 17'. I am also hoping that by moving the projector closer for the smaller screen size, that there may be a slight improvement in detail and black levels, and so forth, over even what you are seeing, what 'cha think ? In advance, thank you for your time sir !

Yes it does the HUE, Saturation and gain. Smaller screen usually does make a better pic.

The Epson EH-TW3500 (known as the 8100UB in the US) is the replacement to the Epson EH-TW3000.

Had one oddity since owning the projector. I turned it on and the lamp warning came on saying I was at 3500 hours and to remember to order a new bulb. Yet I was really only at 50 hours when I checked menu.
Other than that unit has been perfect no problems.
Stix...so, if you were stating over with a purchase would it be the hd20, hc3800, or the w1000? And why? There is alot of excitement w/ the 3800 pic quality minus the shutdown on it's own problem which I am reading is happening to avs members in Europe...same issues abroad. Otherwise a very nice pj but higher priced than other entry level pj's.

I would still take the W1000 it suites my needs perfectly and did not have to change any mounts to replace the HD65. Direct replacement. The higher price just does not net enough to justify for me.

soundsgreatav 11-23-09, 02:43 PM Hey - there's a lot of talk and has been a lot of buzz surrounding the BenQ W1000 projector. We at Sounds Great Audio Video were one of the lucky few that got one fresh off the line after they were finally released and just before the initial stock totally sold out. With the current buzz and the back-orders, there are few reviews on the BenQ W1000, but loads of questions. So we've decided to jump in and try to help assess the machine for those who are still contemplating buying one of the three 1080p projectors for under $1000.
I apologize for the lack of tech specs and nit picking of the details in this initial review...we've honestly not had enough time to fully test the system and will be updating this review as our experience with the machine evolves. For now, go to soundsgreatav.blogspot.com to check out our first impressions and initial opinions on the BenQ W1000.
We hope to update the blog review on a movie by movie or viewing experience by viewing experience basis. We'll soon be calibrating the picture and testing the Nintendo Wii gaming system on it, so look for more info and opinions to come regarding how the BenQ W1000 performs. THANKS!
@AZDan: I ordered one from ProjectorPeople too, and my sales rep is saying they're still out of stock and won't be in until the 27th. BenQ is saying these units are backordered until the first week in December.
Doesn't seem to be any consistent information. Could you let us know when your projector arrives?
Your right. Just got back into town only to find they shipped me a nice HDMI cable without a projector :(
Its like giving your son a box that says 'Porsche' on it for his 16th birthday with Volkswagon keys inside...
Was hoping to get it before Thanksgiving but I guess not.
JerzeyJeeper 11-25-09, 02:05 PM Called projectorpeople three times in the past two days. The latest is that they won't be in stock until sometime next week! Argh! I really want to get my hands on this one!
Does someone know how windows 7 works with the projector connected by hdmi??
because I can not see the image when I connect my computer to this benq w1000
any advice what i can do??
JerzeyJeeper 11-25-09, 06:38 PM Did you try connecting to it using the VGA port? Just to make sure your laptop isn't having difficulties pushing the signal out of its outputs.
CKWells 11-26-09, 03:36 AM Have ordered myself one of these in Australia. Won't get it for a couple weeks though at best.
My first projector so i'm quite excited!! Can't wait!!

Jim McC 12-01-09, 07:04 PM I wish Benq would get one out to Projectorcentral and Projectorreviews for review. Come on Benq!!
Jeffcom 12-01-09, 09:04 PM I know. Don't care to be an early adopter, but took the plunge anyway.
waiting for reviews sucks. think they will sell out or anything stupid? i dont want to impulse buy  is its best to buy the benQ from a site other then benQ direct, deal wise? customer service wise?
There is a review out on trusted reviews http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/review/2009/12/01/BenQ-W1000-DLP-Projector/p1 , pretty much says its the same as the HD20 but quieter.
Also,I received my W1000 projector the 30th and so far its been great. This is my first projector so my option barely counts but for 1K I think its a great value for me.
i did see that one, basicly said there equal but if you take the time to properly adjust all the extra settings in the w1k it can be better

Actually it states what I been saying. Brighter, sharper better colors and blacks. So it is a better picture than the HD20.
The most significant advantage of the W1000 comes in the colour department. For once you’ve spent a bit of time with the HD Video Essentials calibration Blu-ray and the surprisingly flexible colour management features, you end up with a palette that’s noticeably more natural (especially with skin tones) and cinematic than I got with the Optoma. I also felt that the BenQ’s colour palette was a bit richer and more vibrantly saturated post calibration, especially when it comes to reds and blues. The W1000 also suffers less than the Optoma with cheap DLP’s tendency to show fizzing noise over skin tones and green colours during camera pans
HD images look really unexpectedly sharp, for instance, as the projector draws on its Full HD resolution to reproduce a good quality Blu-ray’s details with striking accuracy. There’s none of the softness or noise often associated with cheap projectors - especially those that only have an HD Ready resolution.
The W1000 impresses with its brightness too, despite the acceptable black level response. In fact, it’s so bright and vibrant that you can actually watch the picture quite happily with a level of ambient light in the room – another thing likely to endear it to a relatively casual user.
All these advantages and they are the same but quieter..... You can and do see a better pic on this than the other 2 in its class.
Tho he lost me in his 1080/24p as I have no jiddder or any pinkish in the corners of a black screen. Also his ending reasons are also very lacking as to why chose the HD20 or the W1000. For the most part its what I been saying about the projector so now atleast someone else has it posted so ya don't think I laying out a line of BS.
I have played with all 3 off the new under 1k and this W1000 IMO really does stand out.

That wasn't much of a review. I'm definitely spoiled by Art's excellent, thorough reviews.
He does seem a bit biased or forgets what he writes earlier as he contradicts himself alot as you can see what I highlighted and from what he writes as how they compare in the end. He also does not state the reason to buy one or the other very well.
He states W1000 has better color, brightness, sharpness, less fuzziness, richer more vibrant, connections yada yada and total tosses that out in the end
Got my BenQ from ProjectorPeople today. I haven't hooked it up yet but here are the first impressions:
1) The plastic shell feels cheap, really cheap. This is not to important considering it will be mounted on the ceiling. But if you expect to handle this in any way on a regular basis take this into account.
2) Wife and kids have voted this 'very ugly' At least in comparison to my current Infocus 7210. Again, not a big deal.
3) There is no lens cover. Not that I used the lens cover on my 7210 very much but it would have been nice to include.
4) The included HDMI cable is useless. Its short so unless you plan on connecting this to a wall plate or travel with it (see #1) I would have preferred they spend the money to include a lens cover.
5) The backlight button on the remote is not seperate from the rest of the buttons. I don't want to feel around for this in the dark. My current projector has the backlight button on the side, seperate from all other buttons. Persoanlly I rarely use the projector remote (I have a Harmony 890).
In the end I will judge this on picture quality and to a lesser degree noise. The above items have no impact on me personally but others it might.

Well atleast your first impressions are all negative :)
1) you can handle it all ya want ya just do not want to drop it..... Then again what one do you want to drop
2) Good thing you do not stare at the projector :P I happen to like the look.
3) Whats a lens cover
4) You would have have them include somthing you just said you do not use :p
5) These were all in jest don't take seriously :)
tdog_2005 12-03-09, 02:44 PM personally visually i think the optoma and the benq do not look as nice the vivatek, also i am not vivtek owner i own the optoma
Billbofet 12-03-09, 03:31 PM I think the vivatek looks the best too - if that mattered.
I'm strongly considering the Mits 3800, so I'd be SOL if I was concerned with looks. That one looks like a rejected vehicle design from Battle Beyond The Stars.
Anyone been informed about what image processor this has? is it pixelworks or that reon or something else? mayby we could know if we'd know what the w6000 has, this seems pretty much stripped version of that.
even better if someone with the projector has ability to test inpug lag of the projector, to know how suitable it is for gaming. thanks for great info about the product.. else id totally missed whole toy.
thanks and goodnight. :)

Lol ya but hey whatever I would rather it look better on the screen than on the ceiling. I like the openness of the W1000 tho gets lotsa ventalation thru it.
But definitely not gonna win a beauty contest :)

Does anyone know if the screw locations for ceiling mounts line up with any existing BenQ projectors? I am looking to buy a PCMD style mount, but there aren't currently any cut specifically for the W1000.
Thanks,

EManT2200 12-03-09, 11:37 PM Stix2 - question for 'ya. Would you happen to know if the W1000 firmware is upgradeable. I was wonder because of all the talk about 3-D coming soon. I have an interest in the 3-D when it becomes available, just wondering if you-ve heard any talk from BenQ on the subject. I see on the BenQ sight that the newer cheaper models are listed as being 3-D ready. Would be great if they offer a free download for the W1000 in time! ! !

I hope it is as there is a bug in the W1000 that has the lamp warning light going on all the time saying lamp life exceeded. Gonna call them on this.
CKWells 12-04-09, 07:39 AM Apparently the main reason i'm still waiting for mine in Australia is because BenQ down here is holding the projectors back for a firmware upgrade before shipping to retailers etc. Not sure what for or anything, but that's what I've been told.
I'm hoping the projector will be available next week sometime.

Jeffcom 12-04-09, 10:48 PM Stix,
The PJ will arrive on Monday.
Would like to know what firmware version you have and if you are able to get into the service menu.
I think you are the second person to mention the false lamp warning light.
Am coming from the PE7700. Been a great PJ after lamp issue resolved for the past 3 years.
Maybe BenQ resolved this issue with this second batch.
Thanks

artishard116 12-05-09, 11:58 AM Just a heads up, I got mine and it shows firmware version 101. Stix- can I ask what sort of input you were using in your settings screen shots? Some of those options (like color/tint) are grayed out for me, even on a user setting. Also my colorspace says rgb instead of YCbCr like yours.
Movies look great for me running off my macbook pro, but when I'm just looking at my desktop icons and stuff, the colors seem very dark and muddy, especially reds. Don't really notice it when watching a movie, most colors look vibrant. Haven't messed with the settings too much yet.
I also hooked up the old dreamcast so as to try a different source, and the muddy color was there too.
I should mention, I've tried on my white wall and my gray htdepot screen.
I am using HDMI. You have to tone down certain colors to get rid of that muddy effect. At work atm tho. They were greyed out for me until I went user and one other thing cant remember. A easy fix without the calibration is edge enhancement aswell. Also do calibration will brilliant color off. Easier to setup and truer colors
artishard116 12-05-09, 01:26 PM thanks for the info, could you post your color settings when you get a chance and see if you can find out how you got those options. any idea why our color-space's are different?

artishard116 12-05-09, 10:19 PM Well a couple things. It does seem to be possible to make it better by messing with the 3d color settings. One really annoying thing though is I can't find a way to get it to save those settings. Once you set it, if you switch off your 'user' setting to cinema or something, and then switch back to user 1 or whatever, those settings are back to default. Tried 'save settings' too, doesn't help. Also, still can't figure out why mine says rgb and yours does't even though they are both hdmi, although mine right now is going from mini-displayport to dvi to hdmi. I'm sure this isn't optimal, but it's all i had laying around. Waiting on some new cables from monoprice.
I'd still love to hear your color settings, and if yours stay put after switching modes.

Still messing with the color settings myself. I did find to stop clipping of above white and below black As in the brightness settings in the DVE you need to change video signal to PC signal.
artishard116 12-05-09, 10:53 PM I don't see clipping settings or any pc setting (unless your using vga). Where do you see that?
The biggest culprit so far in my muddy color issue seems to be brilliant color. Which is too bad because it gives you a great boost in overall brightness, but really screws up the colors.

Sorry lost power last night :( I will check and post back.
artishard116 12-06-09, 08:48 AM Thanks. Let me know if it saves your 'user' color settings after switching through other modes. Seems like there's not even a point in setting them if you can't save them.
why I can't change my settings for sharpness
do you have also blocked it?
thx

Ya cant when using HDMI. My settings save on 3d
The PC setting is under HDMI settings.
artishard116 12-06-09, 06:07 PM Hmm, so if you set color settings, and switch to dynamic or something and then back to your 'user' mode, those settings are still there? Can't imagine why mine wouldn't.

Ya they stay put. Hmm
The RGB where mine is different I am at a loss on tho still trying to figure that out.
I did change the color conversion to the right formula for HDTV by changing the color space conversion to HDTV from auto. Give that a try its second tab near bottom.
Could someone do me a huge favour and tell me the dimensions of the cardboard box this ships in? Want to get one shipped internationally and the size of the box is a consideration!
Thanks.

I've tried changing that, hdtv and sdtv give me totally screwed up neon green colors
artishard116 12-06-09, 11:33 PM Here's a couple images. They are crappy but you can see exactly what I mean. The first is with brilliant color off, truer color but less bright. The second is with brilliant color on. The whites get very bright but the colors turn to mud.

I''d just leave it off all the time but the bump in brightness is handy because the room isn't totally light controlled. Between the muddy color issue and not being able to save my own color settings, I'm considering not keeping it. It's a shame, everything else works well.
Jim McC 12-07-09, 02:42 AM Did you calibrate it with BC off? If so, it's still not bright enough?
SteveMo 12-07-09, 04:14 AM Here's a couple images. They are crappy but you can see exactly what I mean. The second one doesn't look brighter but colors do seem washed out. Did you try changing the gamma?

Yea, this is the same thing my old HD1000 does. BC simply increases white or near white brightness. The colors don't change at all, they are just the same brightness while white gets brighter. (so colors look washed out) Try turning BC on/off with only color bars displayed (no white).

The problem is more you like the artificial color the BC throws instead of the truer color its suppose tobe. Alot of people do. The brightness does not change as long as you set the gamma correctly.
Its funny you mention when you switch to SDTV or HDTV the screen goes neon. Mine does that on RGB but not on the others, This projector you need to spend time with. They give ya all the tools to make a great picture. Tho I am not sure why yours is giving you a hard time on certain things.
Do you have the m0noprice connectors yet?
The set can be as bright as when BC is on you just need to set it that way. The best way to get brightness and contrast correct and tru to what the colors need to be not what BC makes them is calibration with a calibration disc.
I do use a different setting on PC use than movies. Some are not upto the task of calibrating as it takes time if your new to it, but the reward is greater as you get a nicer pic than the other 2.
artishard116 12-07-09, 07:54 AM Thanks for all the advice. I'm definitely up to the task of calibrating, but the fact that I can't get it to save my color settings makes it seem pointless.

Where is it not saving?
artishard116 12-07-09, 08:32 AM Well I choose a user setting (user 1, user 2, user 3). Then I make adjustments. Things like brightness/contrast do save specific to which user setting I'm on, however when I go to the next page and start changing 3d color settings, then switch off of my 'user' mode and back to it again, those color settings are back to default. Does that make sense? I've tried hitting 'save user settings' on the first page too, after adjusting colors, doesn't make a difference.

Yes makes since. It seems to me like this might be caused by other settings that are user mode related interfering. I would try writing down your 3d settings before applying anything like BC or other extra calibrated options if you need those on while calibrating, then enter your 3d settings prior to entering those and see if it saves.
artishard116 12-07-09, 10:01 AM I'll keep trying, but so far I can't find anything that makes a difference. I can start on a fresh settings reset, pick a user, and only make color changes, and it's still no good.

No, it's more the other way around. I like the color better with bc off. It screws up the color but it gives me these blinding whites, it almost looks like it kicks the lamp into a 'bright' mode or something. Practically doubles the brightness. I don't think you could ever achieve that effect with it off but I'm willing to stand corrected. Really what does it is this setting under brilliant color that comes on automatically with it. "white peaking" I think it's called. It defaults to level 4/4 when you turn on brilliant color and each level increases the brightness substantially.
maybe theres somthing defective with your memeory or backup battery that keeps settings saved? like on a motherboard theres a coin type battery

Then try that put bulb in bright mode. I just used the gamma to brighten it. The pictures you took the screen looks brighter in the BC off is why I said that.
Double check the pictures somthing is not right. The first looks like BC on the second looks like it off.
What firmware you using? Your unit is acting very strange.
Well well well, we have a problem :( your not crazy at all. Just got off the phone with benq. Told them about the bulb problems and then the colors not saving and also the BC problems.
At first I was trying to see what revision firmware they were up to and he said all these problems are user error. I then stated just tell me what version your at. He then put me on hold came back and just stated to eithier send projector back or send it into us for a firmware flash.
i asked why and he would not answer just that there is problems and they were some as I described. I tried to press further but he would not budge. He said there was problems with earlier firmwares.
He would not go into detail.

Life on the bleeding edge... :)
Though I don't see why he couldn't tell you what the latest firmware version was...
