$10 off at Costco starting today. I would like to reserach it. What is the nearest "non-Costco" model in Toshiba's lineup?

View Full Version : Toshiba SDK990 at Costco. What is equivalent model? Turbo DV8 11-12-09, 09:06 PM $10 off at Costco starting today. I would like to reserach it. What is the nearest "non-Costco" model in Toshiba's lineup? PooperScooper 11-13-09, 07:21 AM It's being sold at other places and is on Toshiba's site. larry Turbo DV8 11-13-09, 09:49 PM Thanks. I was hoping to find references to people's experience with it here, but nothing comes up for me. jefny 11-28-09, 07:15 AM I have been in the market for a blue ray player (I have an Infocus X1 front projector which is 1080p) but because i have an older outlaw pre-amp (no hdmi) I needed something that has analog outputs for sound (7.1). Most of what I saw was in the hundreds and the Oppo is higher still. While waiting for prices to drop I took advantage of the Costco sale on the Toshiba with the idea that I could return it if I saw no real difference. I do have a large collection of standard dvd's and have no intention of replacing them with blue ray which still sells at a premium. To my pleasant surprise the toshiba made a noticeable difference. My wife also noticed the increased sharpness of the image. It's quite possible that what is observable on a 110" image might not be at 50" and below. John tvmaster 12-01-09, 12:50 AM Thanks. I was hoping to find references to people's experience with it here, but nothing comes up for me. I'm testing one at the moment - on par with a Philips DVP3982 - feels a little more solid in its construction - menus on both machines look like 1994 Amiga graphics (why can't they make these look slick?) - however, it can be hacked with a simple code for region-free playback - it plays xvids/divx/jpg/mp3, but strangely it wouldn't play an mp4 file - neither would the Philips. Only one thing bugs me about it: there is no time read-out in the faceplate display. You have to enable an on-screen menu to see the time on the disc. That's the only thing keeping me from buying this unit. Also, the amount of controls on the remote are more plentiful on the Toshiba than the Philips, however, most of the same features can be found via on-screen menus on the Philips. It's pretty much a wash, although that time display thing bugs me - it's nice to see the time from across the room without switching it on-screen all the time. Nifta 04-26-10, 07:12 AM Hi all, I'm looking at this player at the moment. Does anyone know if it can convert PAL to NSTC without hardware modding? Many thanks! John |
