My parents want to get an HDTV (flat Panel) and will not spend the appropriate amount of money for the size they want. They want a 37-42 inch and want to spend less than $800. I told them that they are really going to only get shi*t TVs for that price. Now they are looking at Proscan TVs. Any suggestions for their pricerange? Anyone ever bought referb TVs?

if they are willing to buy plasma, you can get the lowest 42" 1080p models from Samsung, Panasonic, and LG for all around $800.
There are a fair amount of 1080p LCDs at that price range too, but the plasma will difinitively outperform them.
Where are they shopping? are they afraid of the internet and amazon? They'll generally give you in-home delivery for free as well.
*EDIT: Panny S1 is $797 on amazon right now.

Go plasma. I have the 50" version of the Panasonic S1 and I LOVE it. Much better than my mid level 37" LG LCD that I bought a little over a year ago. Sad part, The plasma was cheaper!
You can get a fantastic HDTV with plasma in that price range. LCD would be A LOT harder to find something great in that range.

They are timid of internet retailers at certain sites. Where I might be fine with Tigerdirect or ecost, they would probably not. They were wanting a 1080P, but i find that most of the more affordable plasmas are 720P, any negatives? They may end up getting a bluray player down the road and they currently have fios HD which only shows in 720. So no current issue, but they will probably have this for 5-10 years. I know there will probably be some deals on black friday at Best Buy, but I would hate to send them into that hell hold.

at 42", a 720 will be fine. If you can get a 50", then I would recommend a 1080p. for 800 bucks, you have at least a few choices in the 42" size. I would even think you could find a 50" within that budget. They aren't going to be top of the line, but most plasmas on the market are decent

Thanks.
I found this one:

It seems to be decent. Anyone now where you can maybe get it even cheaper? Anyone have issues with this model? reviews seem decent.

for $800 (which is presumably still within their budget), they can get this 50" 720p Panasonic plasma:

Although, I would really wait until Black Friday, there should be some deals then.

That might be a bit too big, but I will pass that along too. Panasonic seems to have very good reviews for the their720P plasmas.
So the difference in clarity between 1080 and 720 with smaller TVs is really that negligible.
