View Full Version : When is the best time to buy a flatpanel
dicepackage 11-13-09, 06:15 PM I have been wanting to buy a new TV for awhile and I was wondering when the best TV prices will be or have been historically. The Black Friday ad for Best Buy came out today but I was not particularly impressed with the prices. I have heard several theories as to the best time to buy. They are Black Friday, right before New Years, and right before the Superbowl but which of those would typically be the cheapest.
Nicktx27 11-13-09, 07:07 PM Black Friday won't be that good this year due to the economy. I say buy now if you have the cash and want to get a new set then buy now.
When a new model comes out and the one u were looking for becomes last year's model. Not always though, sometimes they are smart to deplete the old inventory first b4r announcing the new model.
Servicetech571 11-15-09, 09:49 AM Watch the sale ads and decide which price point you want to jump in at. Prices will always be dropping but tend to level off after a product has been out for a few years.
Look at open box/clearance products if the discount is significant enough.

I also recommend going to a retailer and making an offer (a reasonable one) and see if the retailer bites. I've had success with the last couple sets I have bought doing it this way. Usually try and find a manager though.
integra1972 11-15-09, 01:49 PM dicepackage, I'm in the same position you are in. I think the last few years the 2 weeks before the Super Bowl (FEB 7, 2010) has been really good for deals on Plasma and LCD. By this time CES is over, we get to see what is suppose to be coming out and the retailers are in the mode to slash prices to get rid of last years stock to make room for new stuff. At least that is how it has worked were I live which is metro east of St.Louis.

Good luck with that. The margins are already paper thin, especially on low end models. Higher end models and clearance items do have some wiggle room.

They say that EVERY YEAR.
The trick is, know what u want, have a few models ready in your head, and when u see a sales that's like 20% below what they were selling for. PULL THE TRIGGER.

The limitations of the on-off LED backlighting! There can be spotty brightness across the panel, so read up on the various threads for any panel you are considering. Generally, they are much more expensive than the plasma they are trying to compete with for black level, so at this point, why bother with this technology? Don't compare in store...the LCD/LED panels will look much more positive in that condition, but that's not where you will be watching.
PrimeTime 11-17-09, 01:54 PM Last weekend, not one but two large SoCal B&M retailers dropped the 50" Panasonic plasma below seven Benjamins.
You might knock another twenty bucks of that, closer to Xmas. But, if you want a good deal, and available product before the Xmas feeding frenzy, why bother to wait?
joebloggs13 11-17-09, 08:01 PM Now. Now get out there!
The best prices I ever saw on tvs were either right before christmas or right after I forget which but best buy was selling there tvs that had been returned and most of them the box had only been opened nothing else was wrong with them. They cut the price in half off the msrp.
