I need a very small, compact DVD player for my bedroom TV. I have a 26" LCD TV with built-dvd player but the DVD player quit working just after the warranty is up. Is there a small/compact DVD player out there ? I need the size to be as small as a portable DVD players and I can't use top loading ones.

Good brand and fairly small. Not tiny, but compact none the less. The truly tiny ones are generally kind of cheap and don't upconvert (which may not be an issue for you).

I agree with jeff's assessment of the 1/2 width DVD players, all I've seen are of the junky variety. Sony's cheapest DVD player as about 3/4 the width of a standard DVD player and is probably the best compromise between size and quality. I think it retails for less than $40 at Walmart, Target and most any electronics retailer.
I've tried several of the 1/2 width players and all ended up dead in less than a year:mad: You see them often at Black Friday sales for <$20 but be repaired to buy one each BF because they rarely last until the next BF.

I was looking for ultra compact ones. No more than 9.5" in width and depth.

I will see if I can grab one of $20.00 just to try out. This looks like a dead end route though. Ultra compact ones don't seem to be that reliable from what I have read so far today.

I can't recommend one (never owned a tiny one), but this one seems fairly well reviewed by buyers (4/5 out of almost 300 reviews). If all you're doing is replacing a built in one on a small TV I'm sure its as good as what was there.

I have seen that. I came to the same conclusion...can't be worse that the built-in.

This is the Sony I was thinking of (http://www.walmart.com/Sony-Dvd-Player-Progressive-Sr200P/ip/10771165), but at 12.6" width it comes in a little wider than your requirement, the depth is only 8.2" though.
While I've always been impressed with Sony players, this years models seem cheaper than the past, although for your use they may be fine. This particular Sony doesn't upconvert/have HDMI output.
If you have a Menards near you, check out under DVD players (http://www.blackfriday.info/sales/menards-black-friday-ad.html) for a giveaway black friday deal on a compact player. I have this Harmon Tec player from last year and knock on it's metal case, it's still working.
Click on ad scan and look on the top left side of page 3 for a picture of the player. What I like about this player is it's a metal case compared to the plastic case found on most compact players. The Sony is also metal.

The little $30 Walmart player is about 8" wide ad almost 10" deep. That's the smallest one I've seen. I've been using one for a few years for dubbing and it's still going strong. Just plain old SD though.

Are you referring to the Magnavox ?

Yeah, the Magnavox I've seen at Walmart, and at Target. I've also seen an RCA at Target that is just slightly bigger. It has HDMI out for upscaling.

The Magnavox looks very similar to the old Cyberhome DVD players that were sold before that company was shut down in a raid. It also resembles some GPX and Target house brand Tru-Tech players. I suspect they all came off the same assembly line over in China. WalMart had a clamshell-loading Durabrand model, too, but you said you can't use it.

None got stellar reviews, but for DVD playing on the cheap and small form factor, I don't think there is much of an alternative.

Basically, head to Walmart, Target, and even Sears and see what they have. Might also check Best Buy. I think they have their own version under their Insignia brand.

The small/cheap Insignia DVD player has the reliability problems mentioned previously. Its electronic functionality is OK for a non-upconverting player, but its mechanism is flimsy and wears out quickly.

Thank you guys. If all else fails I have a Toshiba and an Oppo DVD player I don't use. Maybe I will buy black tinted glass wall mount if I get the OK from the other half. That should look less intrusive.
