I can get both for around $1500, which would you guys take in this selection?

I am leaning towards the KRP-500M because it is said to have the same internals as the Elite. I know its technically a monitor but I don't need speakers and what not since it will be paired with my home theater.

If you don't need a tuner or speakers and have access to a stand or wall mount then the 500m is the way to go.

Would anyone's answer change if the price was $1260 for the 5010FD vs $1750 for the 500M? I'm not sure where the $1500 500M can be purchased from. Is the 500M that much better? Would the picture quality difference be noticeable even to someone like myself (this will be my first large HDTV; I currently have an HD Sony CRT)?

500M is a lot better. If I didn't need a tuner, I would have got the 500M instead of the 5020. In a heartbeat I would pay $1750 for a 500M.

I hate you :p If I could have payed 1750 to get a Kuro a year and a half ago I would have been dancing on my keyboard, let alone a model like the 500M.

Get the 500M and don't look back. Remember not too long ago people were paying nearly double for these things.
