X Series – Shades of gradation = 4,096 equivalent
S Series – Shades of gradation = 6,144 equivalent
What’s the real life difference?
I’m aware that many specs like 240 hz/600hz sub-field, and contrast ratio are just a numbers game for manufactures. But for “shades of gradation”, is this also the case, or is there an actual perceivable difference in picture quality? Also, if there is a noticeable difference; is it worth the $500 price increase going from the 50X1 to 50S1?
I’ve read elsewhere that 8-bit HD is 256 shades. I have no clue what that means, but it has me wondering if the shades of gradation is just another inflated spec.
I sort of know what shades of gradation is and how it shows up in picture quality, I’m just not sure about the difference between the specs.
I think the black level on the X series should be equal to the S series, right? I’ve read that both sets have excellent blacks, and that the S series comes close to the KURO. Also, in cnet reviews the X series appeared darker than the S series! (Despite the higher contrast ratio in the latter)
The static contrast on the X series is 30 000:1 while the S series is 40 000:1. From my understanding, in real world viewing I won’t be able to tell a difference between those two specs. Likewise at 50 inches, the difference between 720 and 1080 should be negligible. And the energy savings of the NeoPDP don’t mean much to me – I want the best bang for my buck.
I can come up with the extra $500 to get the S series TV, but I just don’t know if it’s a good value proposition seeing that the 50X1 is costing me $1075 – I’m wondering what benefits will come to picture quality for the extra $500.
Based on my reasoning above, the picture quality of both sets should be very close (pending what you guys have to say about the shades of gradation!). So unless I’m missing something, or my reasoning is off, why should I pay more for the S series?
P.S.
Thanks to all board members who provided me with their valuable advice over the past few weeks regarding my new TV purchase. I’ve decided on brand (Panasonic), size (50”), and type (plasma).
Once I decide between the Panasonic 50X1 and 50S1 I’ll be heading to the store to purchase.
