Hello all, I am trying to figure out what I would need to do the following:
And the most logical way to do this.
Record TV content while at home (USA).
Playing back while at work on a Pal sys.(merchant marine, overseas)
I'm open to all suggestions as I am by no way new to Tech stuff just never before had a need to dael with recording this stuff and playing on a diff sys.
Steve...
How about recording what you want in HD (be it using pc tuner, tivo, dvr, etc) and getting a unit like the tvix and set the output signal to PAL land while playing back these HD recordings off the tvix's internal hard drive.

My problem right now is I don't know anything about the equipment available out there. I guess if I break it down what I need to do is be able to record on a removable media so I can bring it with me to the ship THEn be able to play it on a Pal TV. Can you name a unit or two that will allow me to record onto I guess a harddrive and then I suppose I will have to have another unit just like it and a converter (if necesarry) to play it on a Pal TV?
Refer to the stickied HDTV DVR Comparison table (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=17063966&postcount=2). Those are your basic options for recording at home.
For remote viewing away from home on a PC or mobile phone, add a Slingbox or Hava to the DVR. This connects to one set of outputs on the DVR. If you want remote viewing on a TV, and not just a computer, then add a Slingcatcher (http://app.streamsend.com/c/4661321/1681/FLPED5N/SnZ5?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fstore.slingmedia.com%2Fservlet %2FPromoServlet%2FpromoID.25053700%3Futm_source%3Dstreamsend %26utm_medium%3Demail%26utm_content%3D4661321%26utm_campaign %3DA%2520Big%2520Thank%2520You%2520-%2520SlingCatcher) (with a $5 power adapter for Europe); this will allow a TV to access the Slingbox. I'm assuming you have a broadband Internet connection (i.e. cable Internet) at home.

1st of all I really need to do this with it seems a hard drive. I travel back and forth to the ship every 30 days or so and I think it would be great to record all my stuff at home and bring it onboard with me for viewing. On board the ship I will not have phone access and internet connection is incredibly slow, slower than a land line and modem even. So using that for anything as far as uploading and downloading is out of the question.
I think a TIVO will work for me at home and I could have an additional TIVO at work to play back with. I guess it will playback my stuff without a phone line or internet connection hooked up to it???? I really don't know how they operate.
Last step would be to convert to Pal.
It may not sound like it but I am starting to get something resembling a handle on this. There is a lot of information out there a bit too much maybe, that’s why I chose this forum to narrow all this down a little. There are a lot of knowledgeable people posting on here.

The Sonicview HD8000 might do what you want. It will definitely record OTA or FTA to a usb hard drive - in HD.
The manual also states automatic ntsc/pal detection and simple video converter - BUT I DON'T HAVE A PAL TV SO I CAN'T TEST THAT FUNCTION.
Since it is a FTA receiver, I suspect it does work. And there is the screen to choose ntsc, pal, auto.
