Panasonic Plasma TH-42PH9UK has no HDMI or DVI connectors and prices for add-on boards are ridiculously high (as much as a third of the cost of a brand new 42" model.) So I have no alternative to component inputs.

I'm thinking about getting a Blu-Ray computer drive and feed it through my ATI Radeon HD 4850 video card to TV components.

Why does the DVI to component adapter selling on Monoprice say it's only compatible with older ATi models?

Do I have alternatives?

Hello c627627,

This adapter here is a proprietary connector specifically for these video cards. If you do want to go DVI to component our HDFUR2 will convert HDMI or DVI with a HDMI to DVI cable or DVI to DVI cable to component.

Try checking out our HDFURY2 here, PID# 5035

That unit has a VGA input which, I believe, supports all of the common resolutions.

My TH-42PH9UK Plasma does have VGA input but I don't think I can watch HD through it from computer.

Can someone enlighten me about limitations of viewing non commercial, non copy protected Blu Ray DVDs from ATi Radeon 4850 (2008/2009 card) to component input on a Panasonic 9UK Plasma TV.

The VGA input on your TH42PHD9UK will pass 1080i and even 1080/24p
The refresh rate on the 42-9 will still be 60 Hz so results may vary.

The Blu Ray may limit analog outputs higher than 480p HDCP present or not.

The HDFury mentioned above will handle the digital output of the BR including HDCP and feed it directly into the VGA input with virtually no loss to PQ. It is a stable hig quality device. And it is cheaper (and easier to get) than the vintage HDMI/DVI input boards.

What is up with those HDMI/DVI boards going as high as $200, so we won't be able to get affordable boards to save our lives in the futiure, huh?

Yes, I have my computer connected to my Plasma through VGA. The Blu Ray limitations you speak of, are they due to copy-protected commercial discs? Does this apply to HD footage on non-copy protected, non-commercial DVDs or is the Blu Ray DVD hardware itself the limiting factor?
