View Full Version : Are modern Plasmas Burn-In a myth ( Please help me guys!)
modirnwarfare 11-20-09, 01:35 PM Okay, I currently have an old Samsung LCD from 2007, its fine for games input lag wise. I was looking at Samsungs LED tvs but I hear they have horrible input lag. I am so sick of dealing with this inferior technology. I am looking for my first ever plasma. I hear the v10 is great for gaming. I'm worried though, I IR and Burn-In still a problem these days? Please be honest guys, I'm a hardcore gamer (can play Modern Warfare 2, 8 hours a day, 7 days a week.) Will buying a plasma be a dumb idea? I really dont want to ruin my new tv. I need to make a decision before Black Friday! Please give suggestions experts! Please help!

As long as the contrast isn't set too high on a static screen, burn-in won't be an issue. I have MW2 and the matches (online) are short enough that even the HUD will never cause you an issue. It's generally a good idea to keep colors and contrast a bit dimmer for the first 100 hours or so, but I haven't read one specific comment on this forum where burn-in (under normal use) was in issue.
It's not really a problem on modern plasmas.

I hope your right, I really dont want to regret getting it, but the PQ is amazing. I just have a horrible feeling this will be a dumb idea....and I'll get serious problems being a hardcore gamer.

Being a hardcore gamer, you could spend a little time breaking it in before you game on it for 10 hours straight, but burn-in is not much of an issue anymore.
So HUD's are only on the screen when you're racing, correct? Unless you're in a race for 12 hours straight, the HUD's won't be a problem. In general, most video games have screen changes that are frequent enough for burn-in to be a non-issue.
the more the contrast is higher the easier it is to get TIR first, if you dont notice TIR within normal distance then theirs nothing to be concern of. with common sense you wont damage it. and i rather be safe then sorry so i would break it in first but thats just me its NOT required.
iVersatile 11-20-09, 03:19 PM IMO Plasma is the best that it gets for gaming. No lag, no motion blur, no uneven backlighting. However, the possibility of TIR does exist, just have to be careful for the first few hundred hours. Use common sense and you will be fine. I game on my Panasonic G10 plasma all the time and haven't had any problems with IR.
You might also want to get a calibration disk to adjust contrast, brightness, and color to reduce the chances of getting TIR.
TIR (temporarly image retention) So its TIR not just IR its depending on set it might be visable as i said earlier
Adam Bluhm 11-20-09, 03:41 PM My parents don't game at all, but for what it's worth, my father has had a plasma for a year with no regard to static images on the screen. He watches movies only on the rarest occasions but certainly gets his share of American Idol and Yankee games. I don't notice any issues at all on his screen.
He also watches some 4:3 material and does not stretch it. Black bars are on either side of the screen. One time, as just the right angle, I could see a shade of black difference where the bars are. He was watching a Yankee game and they showed a black night sky. I was at about a 45º angle to the screen (assuming 90º is straight on) and the difference in black was noticeable, but I have not noticed a single thing since that one time. So yeah, he's happy. So am I. :)
The first 125 hours the plasma is the most vulnerable to burn in I would go to the 12g setting thread and down load the sd card and break it in with the slide show also the way I understand it the panasonic are much better for not getting burn in then an samsung at least thats what I have learned from reading about it.
pitnyelder 11-20-09, 03:45 PM My G10 is only a week old, and I have been gaming on it often without any extensive break-in. I left the contrast and brightness on the Standard settings (50 and 50) and the only remote hint of IR I got was the vaguest shadow of the HUD from Uncharted 2 after about 4 hours of play. It was gone within seconds when I switched to regular HDTV programming.
I have no issues with gaming on my G10, except for sucking at MW2. :)
panabolic 11-20-09, 03:46 PM Wow, thanks for another thread on this question! Phew, it had been 1 or 2 days before someone started yet another!

If you were watching 1 channel (kids channel) for 50%-70% (stretched so no black bars) of the time do you think that the channel logo will burn in? I love plasmas (have one in the basement HT room) but need a new tv for the family room and was going to get a Samsung LCD but would love to get a Panasonic plasma for the viewing angles.

Yes, I would think that if your television spent 50-70% of it's life playing the same channel, the channel logo would become permanent. I'm not an expert, but that much of the same thing can't be good.
amplive 11-20-09, 05:50 PM Yeah I wouldnt risk it either. Even though I don't want to say this :) I would go LCD for that one..

LOL, LCD fanboy and non-believer when it comes the fact that IR is not really an issue anymore. Plasma rules in the gaming world.

Conflicting opinions is confusin me even more.
amplive 11-21-09, 01:44 AM I have a Panasonic plasma, im no fanboy of the lcd. Maybe Im still just too paranoid as well :)
HearingImpaired 11-21-09, 02:12 AM I just got my Samsung PN50B550 a little over a week ago and have done no break in except watch tv. I've watched several blu ray movies with black bars running across the top and bottom and i have had no image retension at all. I also watch alot of espn and stations like tbs and tnt where they leave their logo and have had no issues with those either. If any image retension does occur there are screen wash features on most tv's that remove the image retension. I think problems with IR are a thing of the past.
scfdefinit 11-21-09, 02:32 AM There's nothing to worry about really. I'm looking for a TV for my loft, I game a lot. So I've been looking at low lag LCDs, it's so hard to find a good set especially with the panel lotteries for Samsungs and LGs. My friend told me he bought a Panny plasma a month and a half ago and games on it all the time. I was surprised and went to check it out myself to see if there were any IR/burn-in problems. I went over played hours of sf4, mvc2, and mw2. No IR really, if there was it was very faint and was gone in seconds. Unnoticeable. I thought the life bars would be stuck on the screen for sure after playing rounds and rounds of sf4 but nope it was fine. He said he games on his tv like that all the time. Straight out of the box he was gaming on it and there were no problems.
I'm thinking about getting a plasma now. The PQ is great, no lag whatsoever. Don't let these "burn-in" problems scare you off, it's practically nonexistent. There are a lot of problems with LCDs too like clouding, flashlighting, etc. you might have to keep exchanging sets until you get a good one.
brentsg 11-21-09, 02:59 AM Please be honest guys...
Sure, we'll be honest for your post. But people were just joking around for the last 5000 times someone created a new account and asked that same question without bothering to look around.
Paullouisj 11-21-09, 03:18 AM I have a question about the G10 panny do you notice Green phospher trails on COD MW 2??
Had a 50 800u that did it...
-Fluffy65- 11-21-09, 04:06 AM I have a Panasonic 58S1, and game on it daily. I was careful during its first 100 hours of life, and now burn-in is not an issue whatsoever. I have a PS3, and play MW2, LBP, GT5, and Skate 2 all the time.
The thing is, Plasmas don't really have burn-in issues at all anymore. If you see a halo of an image that was static for a long time, it's not burning in, but called temporary image retention, or TIR. Occasional TIR is NORMAL, and will disappear within a minute or two.
Bottom line: Don't worry about it. Buy a plasma, and game until your hands bleed!

I agree.
joebloggs13 11-21-09, 11:11 AM If you look closely, most of the logos on kid channels are not solid, but somewhat transparent. You can see content through them, so TIR is not even an issue. I know, as I have a six year old girl that watches nothing but. On a rainy day my plasma will see 5+hrs of this, and not a hint of IR.

I mean no ill will, but as an owner of two different 09 Sammy PDP's I would find this almost impossible to believe.
I wouldn't advise it, but I can almost be 100% positively sure that if you watched say a football game and then when it was done went to the screen wipe screen you would see TIR. Same for Joebloggs13.

My kids watch Treehouse here in Canada, also my in laws who are over everyday have the TV on CP24 a lot which has a ticker at the bottom of the screen. I actually went to look at some of the Samsung 52" LCDs and the viewing angle was not that bad. I guess the bigger the TV the more off to the side you can be.

I have to chime in here also. I have the 50B550 and I definitely get TIR after watching letterboxed movies, games, etc.. it DOES go away fairly quickly though, especially now after owning it for a month and a half. But I find it really hard to believe that he doesn't get any at all.

I stated that when my daughter watches Treehouse, Knowledge and TVO kids, that logos are transparent, which means you can see through them, and hence no TIR. I still get some TIR after a long gaming session of Battlefield BC, bit it goes away very quickly. I find that quite a few station logos are transparent now, which makes things a lot better.
do you even own a plasma yet? the tv wont get damage as long as he mix the content. just so the pixels are moving thus preventing from TIR.

Joe, I was responding to the post by HEARING not yours. He stated that after he watches Blu-rays, ESPN, etc.. that he never see's any TIR. I'm just saying that I find that really hard to believe.

Do you consider watching the same channel 70% of the time to be a practice of "mixing content"?
Thanks guys for all the comments. I love my plasma in the basement but thought rather be safe than sorry so will probably get the lcd for my family room. Now this way I will have one of each! Since the family room tv is on so much between the in laws and kids maybe I will even save a bit on electricity :)
All this research and me switching back and forth between LCD and plasma is giving me a headache:)
I read somewhere (a pretty good point) that between all commercials (have no logo) this can act to help mix up content and prevent logo burn in. Also as pointed out above semi transparent logos are better than solid ones.

A lot of HD channels have a semi-transparent logo and you make a good point regarding the commercials. Even if you're watching 4:3 content without a stretched screen, usually the commercials are 16x9 and essentially refresh (or mix-up) the screen. This is why I've never really worried about IR on my plasma.
ryan i never see TIR on my pioneer. and on my pany i do but its not as advance as pioneer plus i have to get so close to even visably notice it.

spanbauer ok so for more then half the time the same channel will be present however the pixels are NOT in the exact location with the exception of the logo which does change from time to time.
so that plus factor in you'll watch other content you will be fine.
as always :everyone please show me a MODERN plasma that has burned in from normal NON INTENDED usuage.

John you know what i would do if i was you? i would get both tv technology you want to consider run them side by side and see for your self which works best for you during the day / night etc etc...
But i think a little help with blinds and one can go many ways of enjoying tv.

dlplover 11-23-09, 10:30 PM I notice TIR on mine, but only if I've been playing a game for some hours. It disappears within a second and it's only when going to a straight black background (more like a ghost halo than an actual TIR). That's the only time I notice it.
