There are a few threads near this region, but nothing specific to Comcast.
I'll get things rolling with a list of clear QAM channels ATM (that I've found).

These are sorted by Comcast channel.
CC = Comcast Channel
MHZ = Carrier Frequency
Channel = QAM Channel. My DVR remaps minor channels, but the major number should be correct for everyone.

It would help if we knew where you were located. The easiest way is to include it in your profile, and it will appear right below your user name when you post.

We have Comcast in both our Aventura and Oakland, Ca homes. A few months ago Oakland was upgraded to what Comcast calls :World of More" -WOM - service. You need a small (free) box to watch anything since all channels are now transmitted digitly.
Has any announcement been made as to when this will happen here? I am mainly interested in all the extra HD channels that come along
We do have 2 HD DVRs here. The third TV would need a "box". We use one box in Oakland and one DVR.
One question I need to look into - I thought Comcast was required to provide the local OTA channels in HD as well as SD. This obviously isn't the case since the "box" only has a coax output.

Wow. Pretty impressive lineup, ortegaj. I'm a little jealous. I wish I had all those movie channels in HD.

I have a HD DVR box in my bedroom and a regular cable box in the living area. It doesn't allow HD channels but we haven't received the "WOM" notice yet.

The announcement depends on where you live in Aventura. I always notice when Comcast is having updates by looking at my city hall website. It may or may not be the same for your city. I would recommend looking into that.

I set up digital adapters for my mom in Tamarac in anticipation of a November change over, but they still haven't shut her analog off.

Now they're telling me mid February in my area.

Btw, does anyone know the carrier frequency of Fox HD? I've never found it (which probably means it isn't in the clear).

It might be a while as they are still having difficulties with the signal, some channels look pretty pixelated. Also the guide does not display the shows for some channels. But otherwise the new channels are awesome.

I am considering saving some $ and changing to Comcast from from Direct TV and ATT phone and DSl. I have 5 HDTV will comcast chage xtra for cards or hd boxes? How do the services compare?

Mike4HDTV
01-25-10, 03:47 PM
Angel - Comcast will charge you for each box. I think its $7 per box. Comcast quality is decent. I don't have Comcast but my mom does and the PQ looks good on her 55" RPTV. It would probably look better on a new LCD TV.

I have Directv and the PQ is amazing. Directv is raising prices next month by a few dollars. They are also adding a lot (that's what they are saying) of HD channels in April or May because of their new satellite that was launched in December.

Good for you! I also received a letter from Comcast today stating that my area would be enhanced before long. It provided a “unique digital number” which I can use either in a phone call or a special web site to get “my personal information”.

It also stated that DTAs will be required for all TVs without a box or cable card. It also says to sure to respond before 3/15 so I don’t anticipate any actual change until early April. New HD typically come a month or two after that!

But at least things seem to be on the move!

I just captured the Digital Channels, not the Analog one (which I do get as well of course)

One thing interesting (and Annoying) is that I get a couple of local Channels transmitting in HD (720p or 1080i) but not all of them

For instance I get 2 CBS Channels both in 720p (CBS 4 and CBS 33) but NBC and ABC are digital but 480i, anyone know why Comcast is not transmitting those channels in HD as they do for CBS Channels?

Any idea of how often will Comcast change the QAM Channel alignment and why?

DoctorM
02-16-10, 04:40 AM
JcMarin - I've been finding in my area (Margate) that Comcast shuffles the QAM dial once every month or so. Usually not drastically though.

As far as the HD channels go, technically they're supposed to be an upgraded service. (Which in my mind is a violation of the FCC must carry rule, but Comcast does what it wants).

I used to get WPXM (Ion) and WSBS in HD, much later I gained WSFL (CW) and WBFS (My Network) in HD. I've now lost all of those but HD versions of ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS are clear on my QAM.

I'd say enjoy what you are getting.

How are you getting this many HD channels? What package is this and how much do you pay?

One thing interesting (and Annoying) is that I get a couple of local Channels transmitting in HD (720p or 1080i) but not all of them

I do not see 6-1 or 10-1 on your list. I am getting 6-1 (NBC) and 4-1 (CBS) in full 1080i through Comcast. I don't have a box or anything, just straight up coax cable connected to my Samsung LN46B550.

I am in North Dade. These are the Channels that I'm picking up in HD.

2-1 (1080i)
3-1 (1080i)
4-1 (1080i)
6-1 (1080i)
7-1 (720p)
10-1 (720p)
33-1 (1080i)
35-1 (720p)
39-1 (1080i)

Everything else is mostly 480i and a few that are only in SD. For instance, I am not picking up the digital version of MTV (if it exists?). [edit: nevermind I found the digital counterparts to all the analog channels.]

Here is the updated Comcast Lineup for North Dade/Aventura that I received in the mail. This list will be fully effective starting March 1, 2010.

King; I talked to comcast they are starting roll out for the rest of the counties within the next four months. My community was basically the first place to get the transition started. I pay the say same $6.95 for all those channels. Like I said earlier the channels are still having problems, so that can explain the delay in why comcast has not spread to anywhere else.

By the way has anyone heard anything about the comcast name change to "xfinity"?

JcMarin,

Thanks a lot for your work. I was really pissed about losing Cartoon Network until I found it's new QAM location.

JcMarin - I've been finding in my area (Margate) that Comcast shuffles the QAM dial once every month or so. Usually not drastically though.QAM channel locations get relocated for system maintenance.

As far as the HD channels go, technically they're supposed to be an upgraded service.Nope.

Comcast corporate policy is to pass all the local HD they carry in clear QAM, included with all cable packages, even the least expensive (usually called Limited Basic).

The problem is that most Comcast CSRs are not aware of QAM and how it works. If you need to call for QAM issues, be sure to get someone who knows what QAM is. It may take a number of calls.

Now for the bad news: At some point in the near future, digital channels will be encrypted, and there will only be ~20 or less analog channels remaining (locals, edu, govt, and a very few others).

Local HD will always be in clear QAM, but to get other digital channels, SD or HD, you'll need a box of some kind, or a CableCARD, from Comcast.

Parkland has yet to go digital. I'm still waiting on those new HD channels. lol. I don't have a faster internet connection or any of the perks from "World of More." I'm not in any rush though. I'd rather Comcast get it right than constantly mess up. I just hope I see these features sooner rather than later.

Got two messages on the box stating that ABC Family HD will be moving to channel 383 and Disney HD to channel 384 starting March 23rd. From the looks of ortegaj's HD list in Davie, Coconut Creek/Margate *might* get the new HD channels.

Ok, so your able to pick these channels up because they rolled out the "World of Wow" (which is now labeled xfinity) in your area? If that's all you are paying a month I suspect you have limited basic service or your community includes cable?

For those interested, you can see if its available in your area by putting in your ZIP code on this page.

http://www.xfinity.com/welcome/

BTW, I'm discovering the fact that I can see the VOD streams of my neighbors, lol.

Last week we were supposed to switch to digital in Margate, but nothing seemed happen.
I noticed today that a few analog cable channels have disappeared:
8 WGN
15 WJAN
21 WHFT
33 TruTV
49 Jewelery TV
52 Cartoon Network
59 Style

Strange selection. Anyone else missing anything?

Yesterday I received a message on my box indicating my area will be going all digital on March 31st. I am in Plantation, south-east of University and Sunrise.

I just hope there are no delays! So, I expect some more HD channels around the beginning of May!

BAM. No analog channels below 25 for Margate Comcast subscribers. (Which is funny because 25 (WGN) was missing on analog and has now returned.)

I can provide the frequent in MHZ for those interested, but I already spent WAY too much time playing hunt the channel today.

There are a LOT of duplicates on the QAM dial ATM. I don't know if that is permanent or not.

Missing:

Sweet, I'm also in a condo and cable is included. I just got off the phone with Comcast and told them that I wanted to get the HD channels without the box since my TV has a digital tuner. I told him the price of the package I heard of and he looked it up and found it. Its going to be $7.95 for me and they should be out here on Monday to work the lines outside. :D

I'm assuming you are looking for HD above OTA channels... since ATM it appears they are providing NBC/CBS/FOX/ABC/CW in the clear.

Yes, this is in addition to all the "local" channels that are already coming in in HD (PBS, FOX, NBC, ABC, etc).

Got two messages on the box stating that ABC Family HD will be moving to channel 383 and Disney HD to channel 384 starting March 23rd. From the looks of ortegaj's HD list in Davie, Coconut Creek/Margate *might* get the new HD channels.

I just noticed that I have the same messages with the same dates. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed but it's interesting to see that there is progress being made.

UPDATE

OK, so it turns out I do need Comcast's box to pick up their HD channels (the non local ones) in order to descramble it (there is no filter on the line, as I thought).

I got a monstrosity of a box as they did not have the new small black form factor ones in stock at the local Comcast station where I went to pick it up. They should have some later this week. I have the large Motorola DHC3416 (in tacky silver that matches nothing in entertainment center). May keep it as I'm getting extra channels. ;) We'll see how long that lasts...

Will post more on the HD later.

Arthur you dont want the small box it is God Awful. I have already gone through two, they are slow in changing channels and when you switch between a 720p and 1080i channel the screen goes blank for two seconds each time it is frustrating.

They have them in stock at the Davie comcast offices between davie road and university.

Actually, the 3416 is a pretty good box as far as I am concerned! Lots of DVR space and it works very well.

The silver can put you off a bit, especially if you you have no other silver items. However, that seems to be the color of choice these days!

I had that hideous box for at least a year or so. lol. Comcast came over my place to fix the blank channels that I was receiving. That's when they gave me the new black box.

Although the look is sleeker, I've noticed a few hiccups with the cable box. Sometimes it freezes or skips like 4 channels but I still prefer it more than the other silver Motorola box. It matches my XBR9 and BDV-E300.

Comcast shook things up again here today.

New:
WSCV-51 HD (Telemundo Miami) Esp
WLTV-23 HD (Univision Miami) Esp
WSVN Estrella 7.2 (Should have been unscrambled, but I could never find it.)

The first two aren't even listed on Comcast's site as being available in Margate (in HD)... not that I speak Spanish.

They also removed all the duplicate channels, so make sure you have the working one:

I woke up today and checked my channel line up. I'm happy to say that we have the same channel line up with the exception of channel 214. I was hoping Investigation Discovery would pop up in the HD channel listing before I was upgraded to the World of More. Either way I'm on cloud nine. It's a relief to finally watch my channels in HD. It's always a pain when switching form SD to HD.

How many analog channels did they take away after you got the new HD channels?

BDCat
03-23-10, 07:33 PM
They take them away BEFORE you get the new HD, usually one or two months before! You loose from 26 to 100. If you get a DTA (first two free) you will continue to receive them all plus a few others!

As promised, the new Guide arrived overnight and overall it looks pretty good! The new DVR handling is a great improvement.

However, the new “Watch in HD” button seems to be sporadic at best, only being present on a few of the SD channels that have HD counterparts!

I also have a standard digital receiver but I don’t see any real changes although I am sure it did receive some sort of update overnight.

My big question right now is “did the digital conversion actually happen?” It would seem the only way I can tell is if I unplug a box and then plug the TV directly into the wall and I don’t want to do that. Anyone know?

Any new news about when Plantation will be getting the new HD channels.Good question! I am guessing early June and that based solely on the fact that they have announced a couple of HD channel repositions in that time frame. I am hoping that means the new channels will arrive at that time!

I have tried asking, both phone reps and a tech with the expected results! It's being worked on! Boy they can aggravate you at times; even though you know what to expect!

Hi guys,

I am considering the switch to CC over my D* that I have had for 12 years?
How is the quality of your CC hd video, is it comparable to D*?
Any regrets, have they increased your price with this new roll out?

I have never had D* (or E*) so I cannot do any kind of comparison. Personally, I am quite happy with the PQ from Comcast but bear in mind that my one and only HD is an eight year old RPTV! (This will change before too long with the addition of a second HDTV – the RPTV is still working flawlessly so there is no way I can justify replacing it). The PQ may be quite different on a new LCD!

I am most interested, however, in why you are considering the change-over? It would seem that most switch in the other direction!

Good luck in whatever you end up doing!

Hi Bryan,

I am tired of overpaying for isp and phone service from ATT.
Direct tv $150.00 (1dvr & 4 receivers with HD+ and HBO)
ISP with phone $90.00 (lan & DSL 6MB).

CC meaning Comcast? The PQ was slightly better at a stand still. But wayyy too much macroblocking on fast motion scenes. I've yet to see that with D* in the 18mos I've had it. I'd honestly stick with D until that Project Cavalry comes out and see how it is.

Now, when I installed the two DTAs awhile ago I did indeed start to get macro blocking on all TVs; not the just the HDTV!

Turns out that when you add the DTAs you require a stronger signal level (Two DTAs, one digital and one HD DVR). It took two service calls to correct things. The first call he just played around with splitters (especially the one on entry to the house). This seemed to correct things for several days but then it started again! Next service call, (same tech BTW) he didn’t mess around but installed an amplifier!

Everything has been fine ever since! So, if you are getting macro blocking with Comcast it could very well be a signal strength issue!

I am moving into a high rise apartment in downtown Fort Lauderdale. No DirecTV, just Comcast cable. If anyone can offer any advice, I'd certainly appreciate it...

Does the new TiVo Premeire box "play well" with Comast cable?

I will have a southern exposure on the 7th floor. Any recommendations on an HD antenna to pick up the Miami OTA stations?

Yesterday I received a new channel lineup to be effective June 15 or later! (Emphasis mine). It included a letter from the Broward County Area Vice President (Ken Crooks) in which he introduced the World of More and provided that date.

There will be 60 new HD channels which, added to the 48 already available, will provide 108 HD channels. The number of HD On Demand “choices” will also be expanded.

It is the “or after” that bothers me! Now, a couple of weeks ago we got a message about the repositioning of ABC Family HD and Disney HD effective June 15th. I am hoping that means we will get all the other new stuff as well.

Of course, it could also mean we only get a few of the new channels then or maybe even none of them on that date. Just have to wait and see!

When it does happen, I‘ll have to update my signature!

The Limited Basic tier corresponds to what I am already seeing in-the-clear over in Margate (give or take a few of the Spanish stations).

I'm guessing the relocation of ABC Family and Disney HD is so they fall within the new tier scheme.

Seriously impressive though. Thanks for the scans.

Now they need to reorganize the channel numbers (put the sports channels together, news together, etc.)Yes, they really should but something tells me that is not going to happen!

For me the most obvious issue is with the premium channels. HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Starz were grouped together without any room to add the additional HD channels when they became available.

Today, these four channels are in their old locations while all the additional HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Starz HD channels are in a different location! When they decided to relocate Disney and Family HD they should have also relocated those four premium channels as well to ensure they ended up all being grouped together!

But they didn’t!

New member to the forums here.

Yes DoctorM this has been a big help to me, I have been setting up my own pvr using a Hauppauge Wintv-hvr 1600 with clear qam. I wish I had found your list earlier, spent two days checking each station and writing down channel numbers and then remapping with sagetv.

I live in Pompano Beach and my list pretty much agrees with yours.

I am curious what these new sta's they are going to send out will do to my clear qam channels. I presently subscribe to the digital starter lineup for $29.95 a month, and am receiving everything in your lineup.

Sooner or later all clear QAM channels, except for those making up the limited basic tier will be encoded. Prepare for it! It has happened elsewhere and there is no reason to believe it will not happen here.

QAM is not a supported feature, it is a byproduct and it will be controlled!

I don't understand why cableco's don't realize that the existence of clear QAM is probably one of the biggest advantages they can ever hope for over satellite... and yet they don't take advantage of it.

I guess they are jealous of satellite TV's reduced functionality.

They lose nothing remapping basic tier cable to meaningful channel numbers and letting people use the TV's own tuner.

Considering they provide the digital adapters at their own cost, it really makes little sense. The only explanation is that they hope to inconvenience everybody enough that they rent their DVR.

What I'm actually hearing is that in some retirement communities (and in Florida we have a few), people are canceling their cable for OTA in confusion and disgust.

It makes me feel like I'm in the 80's with my old Jerrold converter box. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Push_button_cable_box.jpg

FOX College Sports (all four)

Comcast has been a bit dodgy for me this weekend, so it could just be a weak signal. Several of these channels will suck to lose though.

Btw, new channel is at 94-1. I don't know what it is though.

I dunno about new STBs, but they have been threatening to scramble anything not available OTA and requiring DTA's (which are stripped down tuners with no features).

Galavision & Fox Sports might never have been officially available (I don't think they were even listed on CC's site.) The Tennis Channel was a recent addition.

To be fair, QAM isn't exactly maintained intentionally. I have found that occasionally when they move channels around some random stuff will end up scrambled for no apparent reason... and then come back on the next shuffle.

So this could be a temporary fluke, or the first sign of cable-geddon.

Looks like they did it in Pompano Beach also. I am going to check what the new DTA.s do, If they are no better then I will drop Comcast, I can get most of what you're getting with an OTA antenna.

DoctorM

Oddly I still have some higher channel Spanish stations, EWTN and the Jewish channel, but besides that it's all OTA stations in SD and HD.
Still CC at least provides WGN and a (somewhat) stable signal strength.

Utilizing BCT (bent coathanger technology) I tested what OTA stations I can receive. Pretty much the same stuff. A few weren't as stable as I like, but it's nice to see the program info working (Comcast strips that).

I decided instead to rewire my system, so I can receive the remaining QAM channels, and receive the DTA signal via a line in.
This of course makes for 2 DTA's in on the same TV system (for 2 different recorders).

Tried to activate this DTA today (after holding it for several months), was given a run around, bounced around and even told that the DTA had "reached its expiration" (no kidding).

Anyway, neat idea. I wanted to use a second DTA on the same system. Here's how:
One DTA box is used normally.
The second one has the front sensor covered and the sensor extension cord attached. I then TAPED the sensor extension right over the front of the second remote.
I now have the remote sitting on my system and all it does is change the 2nd box's channel. I should post pics, it's damn funny.

My observation as to what to expect. We spend half time in our Aventura condo and half time in Oakland, Ca. .
About 8 months ago, Comcast in much of the Bay Area, converted to the World of More (WOM). Tons of HD channels. A few HD channels are an East coast feed, meaning on the west coast we can watch Jon Stewart and Colbert early in the evening. It also meant that virtually everything, except the lower channels is encrypted. We did get a free DTA box. We also have had an HD DVR box. Tha DTA does NOT permit you to get HD. To get an HD feed to your 2nd (3rd etc.) screen you need to rent (not cheap) an HD box from comcast even to get just the local OTA channels (which we rarely watch anyway). In Aventura we do have 2 DVR boxes. We haven't been informed when WOM is coming there. (At least a/o a few weeks ago.)

...mikeWhen all this started, over a year ago now, the understanding was that Miami-Dade would not even be started until Broward had been completed (which is surely getting close now). Not sure where Palm Beach fits into the planning but the intent is to convert all of South Florida. And, again, what about the Keys?.

The new HD channels typically appear around six weeks after the digital conversion.

I asked this question last week in this forum, but got no answer. Since I now have the information from Comcast I wanted to pass it along for anyone else who may need it or find it useful. I never needed a cable box at all to get Comcast on my TVs, and always received expanded basic cable as part of our condo's maintenance fee. A few weeks ago I noticed I could no longer pick up channel 52 (cartoon network) or 65 (History) as I only found snow on those channels. That's when I posted here.

Since then I've Contacted Comcast and was told they were making the change from Analog to Digital in Miami proper and that, in a short time, I'd no longer be able to receive anything from channel 25 up without a cable box. I was given 3 options for use at our condo:

Option 1 - DTA (digital transport adaptor). Simply goes in-line on the TV cable. TV stays on channel 3, there's a very simple remote that turns on my TV, changes the volume on my TV and changes the channel on the DTA box. Allows me to get all channels in the limited basic, digital economy and digital starter lineups. Output is only standard definition, not high def. This option is free and there is no charge for the DTA. With this option there is no on screen programming guide and no options like pay per view or on demand are available.

Option 2 - This option will allow you to get all channels mentioned above, plus things like music channels, on-screen programming guide and options like PPV and on demand. This box comes with a universal remote control. Output is standard definition (not high definition). Cost of this box is $2.99 per month.

Option 3 - This is the high definition version of the one listed above, and it connects to your TV via HDMI cable and it has an optical audio output port. The cost of this box is $7.99 per month.

Hope this information is useful.

mikey305...Go with the HD option for $7.99/month.

DoctorM

If you have a TV or DVR that can handle QAM channels, you may want to stick with the free option (and wire separate inputs for the DTA and an untuned line to your QAM tuner).

While they have shut down all ANALOG channels above 25 in my area and scrambled all digital basic cable, digital 1-25 and OTA HD channels are still unscrambled (plus the music channels). (See post #82 in this thread to see what is still clear for me).

The only reason to go with Option 2 is if you are paying for an upgraded service, or really want OnDemand/PPV. (Though if you are paying for an upgraded package, you would already have the full converter box).

Option 3 is only worth while if you have HD equipment.
Be aware that's probably $7.99 a month just for the box rental and the ability to watch local over the air HD channels in HD (which are (at least for the moment) in the clear anyway).

Someone recently posted an Xfinity card. You can see what is in the "Limited Basic" HD tier. I'm guessing the Digital Started tier isn't included in the $7.99 price. (This is a conjecture. Can anyone confirm or deny this?)

When CC started going digital, they told us that they did not want their old analog Jerrold boxes returned and to just throw them away.

I found that you can pretty much get the same channels offered by CC, in their limited basic tier, by just hooking up a multidirectional indoor tv antenna. The free over the stations, (which include All the Major Networks in HD, ION, ION LIFE, CW, MY 33, S FL, Create, Florida, WLRN, PBS, several Spanish language, and religious stations+ a few others I can't remember) all come in with clear reception. I also live in Margate, and I have found that CC scrambled (by compressing the signal), the channels above 25 about a week and a half ago. It doesn't pay to get the basic tier (only CSPAN and WGN are added to what is already FREE to receive maybe) for almost $25/month. You can get just about everything for free with an RCA indoor flat panel antenna -(a $30 investment). The only trouble I'm having with my hook up, is getting ABC (WPLG )and WSVN-7. These two stations are tricky to find. They use an upper band (and I think VHF) signal. I can use the RCA antenna to get them on a small 7" portable set, but I'm having trouble getting them in (no signal found) on my 32" HDTV set. I plan on trying an antenna with a better signal gain....I'll let you know what happens.

Of Note- CC charges almost $25 (with taxes included) for NOT WORTH IT limited Basic Service. Their next tier up goes straight to $57 for Expanded Basic Service. While Expanded really adds a lot more channels, it sure adds (more than doubles) a lot more cost. You think CC could find a way to offer single family homes something between 25 & 57 dollars!

The RCA ANT 1400 Flat Antenna (cost $30) and works very well with a digital converter box to receive ALL the Free Over The Air Stations- Including VHF broadcasts (WPLG 10 and WSVN 7). I can't seem to get these two VHF stations on a 32" HDTV with a built in QAM tuner however.

I hope people will rethink getting CC's limited basic service when you can receive just about everything they're giving you for free over the air.***It comes in perfectly with digital clear reception too!***Don't give CC 25/monthly when everything except WGN and CSPAN are there for free to everyone with an indoor antenna.

WPLG and WSVN are VHF. Since the change over to digital they were allowed to go to higher power output which has improved reception (at least for me). Still, they are more difficult to receive than just about anything else.

You may want to try WFLX (Fox 29 out of West Palm). Comcast used to carry it, but doesn't now, even though I can get it with an antenna.

I live somewhere that buys the basic in bulk, so I don't pay (directly).
Do they really charge $25/mo for the Limited Basic package and $57 for the Digital Economy? Holy crap that is insane.

Btw, according to the program chart on their website, HD versions of 7 OTA stations ARE included in the Limited Basic (which explains why I receive them on the QAM band in the clear)... but they sort of have to or you are really getting screwed.

I just returned the $30 RCA Multi-directional antenna because RABBIT EARS work to receive All the FTA stations in this area. I contacted Channel 10, and their chief engineer recommended I try rabbit ears......I couldn't believe it but, the old pair I saved from over 20 years ago brought in the two VHF channels (7 & 10) that the new flat panel RCA antenna couldn't. The picture is just as sharp and clear, EVEN IN HD, as it was with CC.
Yes, it's true that single family home owners pay over $21 plus tax (that's almost $25) for limited basic...the expanded is the next tier and the price jumps to just under $60 with taxes included. The limited basic is a GIANT RIP OFF since the only things you'd be missing from CC are WGN, CSPAN, HSN, and QVC. All the same QAM HD signals for the major networks are FTA (Free To AIR). I still am amazed that the old technology works so well with the newest technology. Good-Bye CC limited basic and monthly bills for FREE CLEAR reception with RABBIT EARS!

@Anneinfla - The reason lotek works so well is because VHF and UHF are still the same frequencies they always were. All that has changed is the content being delivered over those frequencies.

All the years of antenna know-how since the invention of the radio and TV has gone into those rabbit ears you are using. Digital broadcasts don't change the laws of physics.

They just figure they can repackage cheap antennas, slap "Digital TV" on them and convince people to rebuy what they don't need.

UHF works well with a loop antenna. As such a wire coat hanger bent into a circle with alligator clips can work extremely well (but rabbit ears are best for VHF).

Speaking of lotek... I've been using an old Jerrold analog box as an RF demodulator (passing the RF DTA output into the Jerrold (tuned to channel 3) and then using the RCA outputs from the Jerrold box).

Tonight I got Com-blocked. Now all the Jerrold box shows is a black screen with the text "Welcome to AT&T Broadband".

Anyone know how to reset, or work around their blocking? It's really obnoxious (and I don't relish what a phone call to their brain damaged tech support will be like tomorrow).

I use rabbit ears for WSVN & WPLG and my reception is great. I have a problem with WTVJ and (to a lesser extent) WFOR which I know are both UHF. Their signals keep pixilating and going out. I have adjusted my indoor antenna (Turk VHF/UHF) every which way and I still have the problem.
I've just about given up on WTVJ. That problem is constant and I just use cable to watch and record that channel. WFOR's problem happens less frequently. If anyone knows of an antenna (indoor) that works well in an area with trees, can you let me know?

Comcast XFINITY service offers South Floridians AnyRoom DVR Viewing feature
by: Daniel Vasquez July 20th, 2010 | 12:22 PM

Today Comcast announced the launch of XFINITY AnyRoom DVR viewing, recording and scheduling features for South Florida customers.

What is it? The AnyRoom DVR feature allows customers to view any DVR recording – including HD – in any room with up to three boxes in a home. The feature also allows HD service on up to four device, the flexibility to watch different recording on different TVs at the same time and full DVR functionality (schedule or delete a recording, change recording options, use slow-motion function, etc.) on your primary AnyRoom DVR.

Dad, that means you can start watching a recording of the game in one room and finish it in another (you know, when the kids come home and your wife wants to hijack the main TV for them, etc.).

Additional equipment is required for AnyRoom DVR service. For more information, visit www.xfinity.com or call 800-934-6489.

I've never heard of ch.44. I'll have to plug some ears in and check (Comcast doesn't seem to carry it).
As far as UHF/VHF is concerned, major stations in the past have been VHF (like WPLG 10 and WSVN 7) when analog.

Digital television is predominantly broadcast over UHF frequencies. WPLG and WSVN are the only two stations that have continued to utilize VHF in this area.

That pretty much means in addition to a UHF antenna you will need a VHF antenna just for channels 10 & 7.

For further discussion of this, you may want to go to this (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=43823) thread. It is for Miami area OTA discussion rather than cable.

Btw, my last scan of QAM showed Tennis and World Fishing Networks in the clear both in SD and HD. Also something else new in Spanish I can't identify, TeleAmerica and something that is always bar codes with some cryptic text message across it (ATM it says CDOC Uplink HD.)

I have not heard of any new additions around here but Comcast did, last December, add 50 new HD channels in Philadelphia bringing them up to 150 HD channels. They included BBC America HD, DIY HD, Ovation HD, PBS Kids Sprout HD and Smithsonian HD . See this link: http://www.cedmagazine.com/News/2010/12/Comcast-50-HD-channels-Philly-total-150.aspx

I read elsewhere the new HD additions included the Cooking Channel and (I believe) PBS Create.

When CC starts something new we usually get it around the halfway mark of the country. This can mean anywhere from six to 12 months. Plus, for some reason the usually upgrade Broward before Miami Dade.

Yes, sometime in May I got a message to my DVR that they where switching to digital and they where running the commercials as well. I believe it was on June 11 that they where supposed to switch because I remember thinking: "Oh wow, they shut off the 1st day of the World Cup, people are going to be mad." So I called and got my two Digital Adapters and have never installed it because I was waiting for them to switch.

Anyways, I just got a promising letter in the mail.

Customer Action Required By: 5/3/2011

As a result of our network enhancement, any TV without a digital device will only receive channels 2-25 and 76-79.

You can receive up to two digital adapters at no additional monthly service charge.

Call us by 4/3/2011 to get your equipment and you'll be ready ahead of time.

So going off that and this

The new HD channels typically appear around six weeks after the digital conversion.

...it looks like I should expect new HD channels the week of June 12.

Nothing much has changed on the channel lineup, but it looks like I'll be paying an additional $2.00 for Performance tier Internet and $2.00 more for the Modem Rental fee. :(

It appears that not every channel will require a "digital adapter". Those between 2-25 and 76-79 will not.
The adapter is free. In the Bay Area (Calif.) an adapter is needed for all channels. (We have one DVR in Ca. - two in Fl.) We have one adapter in Ca. and will need 1 in Fl.
It appears the change over is coming in May.

Hi !... Are you in Miami-Dade County ?.... I live in a condo in the Brickell Avenue area (City of Miami) and as of today we still don't have the New X-finity Channel Line-Up which was supposed to kick in on Feb. 1st...The one with + 110 HD Channels and many more digital SD channels....

I keep calling Comcast Customer Service and they have no idea what's going on... They keep sending e-mails to Tech Support for a response and so far, nothing !.... I tell them we had received the color flyer announcing all the changes eff. 2-1-11 way back in late December...

I would appreciate it if posters here could post where in South Florida they're getting the new line-up (110 HD Channels) and where they're not.... It will help in trouble-shooting my building's situation...

He's in Margate. For us in Miami-Dade I wouldn't expect anything to be fully rolled out until mid June. I posted about this on the previous page.. The channel lineup I posted is little changed from last year, if you received a different flyer I'd be interested to know what it was.

Does anyone have a list of the unencrypted QAM numbers for Key West Comcast?

Are the local HDs available?

I'm down in Cutler Bay and they just updated the Scientific Atlanta Boxes to the new Xfinity firmware, but now the RCA digital out it broken - like it's sending out static like a DD signal instead of PCM.

Not in my area! According to a Comcast flyer I got today, WOM doesn't get here until May. I got a previous flyer that said March 15th. In May, they'll probably move it back to September. Meantime they're adding Spanish SD channels galore. South Florida has more Spanish channels than English channels. We need another one like we need a hurricane.

Does anyone know if Comcast modulates some HD channels with QAM64 and others with QAM256?

I have a new Vizio HDTV (M260MV), and with it directly connected to the Comcast coax, I can receive some HD channels fine, but not the local ABC/NBC/PBS/CBS affiliates. We're on a boat at a marina in Key West, and another boat down the dock from us has a new RCA HDTV, and they can receive (via cable) all the local broadcaster's HD signals from Comcast. My TV decodes sound, but no picture for those... And I'm told that because of the type of service our marina has purchased from Comcast, we can't use Comcast's own set-top boxes.

Talking with a Comcast CSR is just an exercise in frustration:

Me: "My HDTV is connected directly to your cable system - no set-top box. I'm trying to figure out why my TV receives some local broadcast HD channels and not others. My neighbor has a different make of HDTV, and he can receive all the local HD/SD stations."

CSR: "IYou can't receive any HD channels without a set-top box. If you are receiving any HD channels without using our set top box, you are receiving them because of the Digital Transition - you're not getting them from us."

Me: "Actually, I have only your coax hooked up to my TV. I don't have an antenna hooked up right now, so I can't be receiving them."

CSR: "Since the Digital Transition, your analog TV will no longer work unless you get an adapter box. You replace your old antenna with a new digital adapter box."

Me: "But I already told you, I have an HDTV with a digital tuner. It supports both ATSC and QAM. I'm getting the signal from you guys."

CSR: "That's impossible - you need a set-top box from us to receive HD channels. If you don't want to use our box or service, you can receive them using the adapter box.

Me: "Well, even with an adapter box (which I don't need), you still need an antenna."

CSR: "No - your antenna no longer works because of the digital transition. You need to replace it with an adapter box."

Me: "Can I speak to a technician? I believe my problem may be with the type of modulation you are using - QAM64 or QAM256."

CSR: "I'm a cable technician. I've never heard of that."

Me: "Well, I'm an engineer - could I speak to one of your engineers? This appears to be a subject area you haven't been taught about."

CSR: "We can't let customers talk to engineers."

Me: "Can I speak to a supervisor?"

CSR: "No one is available right now. And I'm telling you it's impossible that you can be receiving any HD signals from us without a set-top box."

Me: "Then how can I be receiving them if my TV's only hooked to your cable system and not an antenna and adapter box?"

CSR: "You're receiving them because of the digital transition".

I should have replied: "And just how does that work? How does the digital signal get into my TV? Smoke and mirrors? Freakin' magic? Huh??

GRRRRRRRR!!!!

I have since found out that supposedly my M260MV only supports QAM-64 and not QAM-256. That sounds odd to me - QAM-256 is the preferred modulation scheme since you can pack more bits per baud (higher bitrate in the same channel size).

I'm trying to find out what exactly is Comcast broadcasting in the Key West. Is there really a mix of QAM-64 and QAM-256? Are they setting the encryption flag on some channels without really encrypting the payload? Do I need to return my TV because nowhere did it say it didn't support QAM-256. The specs just say QAM.

NEVER talk to a CSR about technical stuff. Not only are the NOT smarter than a 5th grader, they're dumber than a rock. they know NOTHING about QAM or ATSC or NTSC. It's all GREEK to them. Comcast/ XFINITY will not give you info about QAM because they don't sell that to their customers. ALSO, they keep changing the QAM channels. What you get on a specific channel one day could change on another day. Frankly, I think looking for channels on a QAM tuner is frustrating. I don't understand why anyone would bother with it.

Because if you don't shell out for a Digital Converter with a digital output, you are putting an analog signal into your TV and/or DVR.

That's one of the reasons I usually post a new QAM list here every time I notice a change.

I believe the 3400 DVR is now available in the Miami area. If so, it now will come with 500G of disc space! 4+ times the capacity of the 6412 units we have. (We have 2.)
When I get back to Aventura next month, I'm going to prevail upon Comcast to let us replace at least one of our 6412 units w. the 3400.

When our 6 y.o. 6412 died in Oakland last week, I asked that the tech bring a 3416 (which is a few years old). Turned out he didn't have one and was going to give me another ancient 6412 as a replacement. I asked if he had any 3400 series model. He said he had the DCX3400m that was meant for the "Any Room DVR" feature. He called his super and they let me have it!!
Nice to be able to record what you want w.o. worrying about space. I gather the 3400 w.o. the "m" in the model number is for non-multi room use. The "m" model works with up to 3 remote boxes.
As I recall, we pay $15-$16 for each DVR. (About $31/mo). Our 3rd TV in a spare bdrm. just has the free DTA box feeding non HD to the wall hung display. IF we went for the "Any Room" set up, the main box would be $20/mo and each satellite box would be about $8.50. Advantage of having the remote box is that it would have access to all the HD channels we get and feed HD signals into the display unit. The DTA box only feeds an SD signal.
Disadvantage of giving up our 2nd DVR in our bdrm is that while we could access anything on the main unit and play, pause, stop etc. - we couldn't pause a live program we happen to be watching in the bedroom. All programming has to be on the main unit.

would like comments from anyone who has this system. I am thinking, tho, of simply trying just to get Comcast to give me the 3400 box to replace our "main" 6412.

The newer DCX3400 boxes have 500G, it appears. (This info fm. the DCX3400 thread here on AVS.) The older ones have 320G - which is still twice the size of the 6416.
The only diff between the DCX3400 and the DCX3400M, as far as I can tell, is that the "M" is capable for multi-room use.

Obviously, Comcast will give the user an old (technologically and physically) box if they can. 95% of users don't know the diff. When I get back to Miami next month will turn in at least one of our 6412 units for a 3400. Not convinced the "any room" system is better than simply having 2 boxes. Maybe if you have 3 or 4 video display units that need TV signal it would pay.

For anyone who hasn't heard, Comcast has reached agreements with ABC and FOX to carry their shows on VOD. This happened at the end of April.

Check this thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r25792126-Comcast-adds-ABC-and-FOX-programs-to-VOD

Only thing is that both ABC and FOX insisted (as part of the agreement) the Fast-Forward capability be disabled and their shows are a full 60 minutes meaning they are full of commercials without the possibility of skipping over them!

By contrast the CBS and NBC shows are 44 minutes with minimal commercials and you can use the fast forward if you choose!

So, I'll keep DVRing the ABC and FOX shows that I watch so I can fast forward over the commercials during playback. I'll use VOD for the CBS and NBC shows.

N. Dade/Aventura Update

So I've been talking about (see posts (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=19819468#post19819468)) how comcast has yet to roll out all digital in the N. Dade/Aventura area (even thought they claimed it would happen in June 11, 2010 and again in May 3, 2011).

Well, today they left a hanging notice on the doorknobs of everyone in my condo complex. On it it reads:

Customer Action Required

In order to avoid interruption we need you to pick up your digital equipment to keep your current channels. Comcast will be onsite: June 15th, 2011 at the Club House

So I assume this is about everyone needing to have a Digital Converter Box (which I already picked up last year mind you, lol).

I hope this means that they will finally convert to all digital in my area, hence I will be getting the rest of the HD channels that I'm missing a few weeks after that.

I hope by the end of July. *fingers crossed* :)

I'm in Martin County. After all digital, straight cable from the wall you will receive channels 2-22 and a few others, including any QAM sub-channels. To receive all channels you received before the transition, you need at least an DTA (Digital Transport Adapter), which connects via RF from the wall to an RF input, with the TV set to channel 3. Any options above this you will need either an SD, HD or DVR set top box. Comcast gave us much information regarding this transition before it took place.

Awhile ago someone made a post asking about the Triple Play option but I cannot find it right now. So far as I know there were no responses. At that time I was giving it some thought but was certainly not in a position to respond. Now I am and all is good!

Some background. A few months ago I was getting my TV service via Comcast, my home phone and internet service via AT&T and my cell phone service with Sprint. The costs were a little ridiculous!

Comcast was $148/month for Digital Preferred (with HBO and Cinemax), DVR/HDTV service and a second HD box.

My AT&T home phone service was $140/month including Complete Choice Enhanced, Voicemail, DSL Extreme and an International Calling plan.

The cell phone service was $78/month for a two line family plan.

This worked out to $366/month (taxes included).

The initial thinking was to replace our cell phones with AT&T smart phones and to use them for pretty much all our outgoing phone usage. The home phone service would get stripped down to the bare minimum and the voicemail service would be replaced with an answering machine. We would keep the DSL. We would also remove the HBO and Cinemax services since we rarely, if ever, watched them.

Then I received a promotional letter from Comcast offering to upgrade me to Triple Play HD Preferred XF with $30/month off for the first year. This made us start to rethink things again.

I called Comcast twice to see how the price would work out for me. I did this twice since the reps often tell different stories. The two responses were different but close enough that it was not important.

I called back a third time to place the order and to, once again, review things. Having had a couple of bad experiences with contractors in the past I requested a Comcast employee do the install. Oh yes, we also decided to have the Any Room DVR installed as well; we would also drop HBO and Cinemax since the Preferred XF package does include Starz.

When the guy came to do the install in turned out he was a contractor! However, he seemed to know what he was talking about so I let him go ahead. I am glad I did – he did a wonderful job!

We also decided to go ahead and get a couple of AT&T smart phones.

So now my monthly Comcast bill includes the Triple Play HD Preferred XF package (includes Digital Preferred, STARZ, High Speed internet and Digital Voice Unlimited) for $120/month. Additionally, there is $13.95 for the Any Room HD/DVR and $8.50 for the second HD box) Note there is no additional charge for Any Room DVR with Triple Play!
Additional charges include $7.00/month for the modem. (Note this also includes a router but you must ask for it; they will not offer it). I didn’t need a router since I already had one set up and running.

Total Comcast cost per month, including taxes) is $167.65! Only $20 more than I was paying for TV service alone!

Our Cell phone bill went up to $110/month primarily because of the required data plan for smart phones.

So the total cost per month is now $278! $88/month saving for extremely better service! (Yes, in a year the savings will only be $58/month).

The new HD/DVR we received was a brand new DCX3400 with 500 gigs. The second HD box was the one we had all along; a DCX3200.

Problems encountered so far: NONE!

Niceties: Caller-ID on your TV and being able to listen to your voicemail on the internet! Plus there was no need to cut back on the home phone service. Still have voicemail and unlimited domestic long distance (which includes Canada). Plus, the Antroom is a great thing! My wife loves it!

A final installation note: Depending on your situation you may encounter some one-time installation costs. Any Room DVR requires a line with no splitters to each box (so you may have to have a room rewired). And, of course, if you want the modem in a room that has no outlet it will need to be wired!

In my case he also replaced the wire from the pole outside to the house (no charge for this) saying it ought to have been done a long time ago!

Well that’s my experience – I hope it may have helped you. I would certainly recommend it!

I stopped in a couple of days ago at the 1750 N Federal Hwy store...clean layout and nice selection. Prices weren't too bad, either...some of the better LCDs and plasma displays were priced lower than at the CompUSA store next door. A few were lower even than the H.H. Gregg store at Sawgrass.

Ok, I received another letter that says the date when they switch to all digital is "on or after 8/2/2011". Confirmed with the representative they sent to my condo today. They where handing out the digital converter boxes, which I already had for over a year. The rep also handed my a channel lineup list that indicates NEW next to the HD channels that I'm missing. That's promising. :)

New channels went live last night in metro Ft. Lauderdale.

It's been a while but it seems that Comcast in Kendall still doesn't have all the movie channels in HD and several channels not yet in HD that have been HD on D* 3 years ago since I switched. Is this the case? I was reconsidering Comcast because of the superior VOD and Xfinity iPhone app.

Not every single movie channel is in HD but most are. I'm happy with Comcast now because of the VOD choices alone. You can get all the HD you want with VOD and catch up on shows that you missed and didn't record when they aired.

No...cable will be churning out SD channels for quite a while. Many still do not have HDTVs and therefore must be accommodated.

Is Comcast planning on adding any more HD channels this year?

Here in Miami Gardens, I have not seen any new HD channels since... :-? forever. I have not heard of any new channels coming. Does anybody know if Comcast is done for the year?

The 40 HD channels I have is a joke. You can at least give me NFL Redzone HD after you took away Xfinity 3D and ESPN 3D.

Yup but it's very clear that Comcast doesn't give a tinker's damn about it's Premium Package subscribers. And your right about On Demand. As good as Comcast's OD system is, it is no substitute for real channel and programming choices. In my area I'm sure that people were clamoring for Fox Soccer, Bloomberg, Game Channel and GMC (whatever that is) in HD...NOT! We still don't have HDNet Movies and Comcast has yet to explain that.
