Hi, I'm an HD customer of Time Warner Cable in Charlotte and thought I'd start a thread for our area. I talked to the HD guy at TWC again today and advised him of this website and he'll be checking in from time to time to maybe answer questions and get info from us.

ABC and Fox are still holdouts for HD here. TWC is ready for them but these stations are holding things up with the carriage agreements so email them constantly asking for them to be shown thru TWC HD. Also, the 3100hd boxes should be out before long and TWC is currently testing them for bugs, etc. I Control is coming soon as well and will work with the 3100hd boxes. This lets you rewind, play and pause movies you rent just like Tivo. I told him we really want widescreen choices in this format so they are aware of that.

Lastly, there's a new HD channel coming to TWC! On April 1st, we get another PBS station on channel 230. It shows from 7pm to midnight. There are a few other digital non hd channels coming the same day on channels 231-234 so keep an eye out!

Let's keep this thread going for the Charlotte area HD owners and for questions, info, etc.

Thanks,

Steve (aka "dvdguru")

Happy owner of a Toshiba 50H81

I have the SA2000HD box from TWC @ this time. They have been promising the new SA3100 box to me for over three weeks now. They keep calling me back and changing the appt. At this time I do not even have an appt. anymore.

Can any on tell me the level they get on their box? I get –9 to –11 all the time. –9 is in yellow and –11 is in red. I ask because the digital channels (150-165?) and the HBO channels (300-317) all look really poor. I get a lot of pixalation and the jitters; it is very hard to watch. A neighbor had Direct TV and his digital channels look a lot better than TWC’s digital channels. Of course my analog channels also look poor. The HD channels look good though. I think the SA3100 box is going to fix this, or at least that is what I have been told.

I live in the Huntersville area and use a Toshiba 34hx81. I hope we can keep this thread going. Any one knows whom to email at Fox and ABC? All my favorite shows are on those channels. As of late I watch a lot more CBS.

Scott;

Do you have a splitter in your system between the cable box and the wall? If yes, is it a 1gHz model? If your signal is low that might be causing some of your problems. Our TWC here in SC checks the signal level and makes sure its adequate with or without a splitter and will install amplifiers if needed.

I would also ask if you are watching the non-HD channels upconverted through the component connects? Most users (including me) seem to have much better pictures using either S-Video, Coax, or composite connects for those. This might change with the 3100HD box (I have seen mixed reviews so far).

Steve,

I might suggest a phone call or two might be in order vice just emails. Also, I would contact both the individual stations and TWC since both are parties to the carriage agreements. Here we are much further behind you guys in DTV roll out ...we have only PBS but hopefully will have ABC (SD) and CBS (SD/HD) come May. But NO word yet on when they might get on cable (I fear it will not be this year).

Tomorrow is the date for the new PBS HD channel on TWC channel 230 so at least we're getting something new. I'd like to know what Fox's side to the story is though. It's not HiDef of course but it would be nice to see some of their shows in widescreen at least. Any info is better than no info so feel free to post!

I am a TWC Charlotte customer, eagerly awaiting his first HD receiver.

I last spoke to one of the HD guys TWC last week (not Ron Wright - the other one) and was advised that they were doing final testing of the 3100 boxes which they had fitted with customized software. The new batch of boxes seemed to be working great and woukd be rolled out in the next 3 weeks.

I wanted to take this opportuhity to commend the two individuals at TWC Charlotte - Ron Wright with whom I have spoken several times, and the other gentleman whose name escapes me. Even though I have been one of many who have bothered them with phonecalls wanting to know when the new boxes would be available, when new services will launch, etc. they have been so helpful and friendly. They have been open and honest with information instead of giving the canned responses that one usually expects from cable companies and the like. Well done to you both. Your efforts really are appreciated.

As for getting my receiver, I'm waiting as patiently as I can to see my first ever HD television picture.

Bdenman,
Do you have a splitter in your system between the cable box and the wall? If yes, is it a 1gHz model?
------Yes it is 1gHz. The split is from the TWC House amp and the SA 2000HD Box.

If your signal is low that might be causing some of your problems. Our TWC here in SC checks the signal level and makes sure its adequate with or without a splitter and will install amplifiers if needed.
------I have the amp. They test and say everything looks good. Sometimes they say the single is too high and sometimes too low?

I would also ask if you are watching the non-HD channels unconverted through the component connects?
-----No I watch through s-video. IF I am going to watch an analog channel for a long time I switch inputs to the non-SA2000hd input. I just use the good old TV turner for that. Still not a great picture but better.

Most users (including me) seem to have much better pictures using either S-Video, Coax, or composite connects for those. This might change with the 3100HD box (I have seen mixed reviews so far).
-----I am waiting the new Box that is said to fix a lot of this.

Any other suggestions?

ALL,
I cannot wait to see what is on the new channel tonight. I would also like to see what are ABC and FOX’s side of the story. TWC is putting the blame on them. If Fox and ABC are not to blame they should speak up. I was “told” that ABC and FOX wanted to have TWC carry extra channels. Like there own version of homeshopping network that user could buy stuff through the TV. TWC said no because it would use all the bandwidth, and not leave enough for the HD broadcast. I do not know how true this is. I am just passing along info.

Could people that do have the box (2000 or 3000) please let me know your single strength. This can be found by pressing the star and dot inside the circle button at the same time for 3 full seconds. Up comes the data and you can see what you strength is.

Thanks,
Scott

I know the new boxes are in but not quite ready for a full rollout to the customers, but are being tested in a very few homes. I to have chosen to be patient as I have seen the new boxes in action and love the product. As far as signal strength a service call fixed my problem with signal and should have nothing to do with HD.

The only side of that story that matters, though, is that 480p is not near HD, so nobody should really care if TWC-Charlotte carries it or not.

Very good point :) I care more about ABC so I wish they would say something. I emailed them and they wrote back and said that they are in talks with TWC which probably means they want extra stations or something too instead of just letting us see HD without decreased bandwidth. Also, WHERE are the new TWC stations (230-234) that were supposed to be on today? I don't have them yet, does anyone else? I rebooted my box but they still don't show up in the guide.

Also, I would like to thank the TWC HD Rep that I talk to when I call there. His name escapes me as well but he is always very friendly and very helpful when I call. I tend to believe him over the stations as well and believe that they are asking for extra channels or bandwidth or something like that.

I believe these stations already tried this in Raleigh and TWC refused. The stations gave in there and need to here as well. We don't want whatever they're fighting for. We just want uncompromised HD! Do they realize I would watch more of their station in HD when it is shown? Apparently not which is surprising to me...

Shine555, I tried but can't find my signal strength in the diagnostic section. What's it under? Does your screen have a red lock icon at the top like mine?

In regards to the launch of the WTVI High Definition digital channel, the engineering group at WTVI has indicated that they will "likely have to upgrade software in one or more of their digital decoders before the problem is fixed". They do not currently have a time frame for this to occur. Perhaps, some inquiries to them could encourage a sense of urgency on their part once they understand how many people are interested in this product.

I will send an email or call the new station, and FOX and ABC. Anyone know who, to call or email at those stations? I think just calling and asking about HDTV, will get me nowhere.

The single strength is in the diagnostic screen listed under RF and it should show what the strength is. I had my fixed today. It is now only @-3 and the picture looks much better. Not the best I have seen, b ut a lot better. The "Cable Guy" said that my convergence was off a bit. I didn't know it could be off on a direct TV, but that is what he said. I might call the shop where I bought it.

P.s. I was told its not a good thing to mess with the diagnostic since the 200hd software is so "touchy".And shine5555 your convergence does make a difference in your picture quality. You should call th store where you bought it or check your manual.
As for ABC and FOX,we all know those stations are huge and wont be far behind in the HDTV run. Therefore I wait patiently since its all still pretty new anyway.

Finally, after watching standard definition on my HDTV for the past 3 months, I am going to be able to watch HD tonight. My 3000 box is being installed this afternoon and I can't wait to see the results. Though most digital channels are OK, the picture quality on the locals is poor. To finally have a clean picture on CBS and NBC will be a delight and to have HD programming with Discovery soon to come is excellent.

I now that TWC has stated before it's comittment to carrying HD channels as and when they become available so I assume taht Discovery HD Theater will appear on or very soon after it's launch date.

No doubt once I've seen just how good HD is, I'll be firing off emails to WCCB (Fox) and Channel 9 (ABC) telling them they need to act or lose viewers.

Thankyou TWC for your progressive stance toward HDTV !

Hi all Charlotte HDTV enthusiasts! Silly me, I'm an even earlier adopter than the rest of you guys; had my gear for a year now through DISH Network. Anyone else bagging DISH or DirecTV for TimeWarner's new box? I had heard that the cable box will carry both the east and west coast feeds for HBO and SHO. That correct? If so, and if they pick up HDNet, which I sorely need for it's must-see TV like Bikini Destinations, then I'd have to give up DISH...

On the other hand, DISH has the rumored HD PVR921, a HD Tivo-type receiver, coming out sometime before the year is out (or so rumor has it), which would provide a clean, simple time-shifting option. That would keep me a DISH customer indefinitely.

Decisions, decisions...

I received the 3100 box about 2 weeks ago and the channel guide and channel changing speed is greatly improved over the old box. The problem is.... I feel bad telling you guys this in case you haven't noticed yet but... The box has a bug that causes jitter in the digital channels when viewing them through the coax or video outputs. Check HBO and you'll see what I mean. It's a very quick LIGHT, DARK, LIGHT, DARK motion in the contrast of the picture.

The good news is that TWC and Scientific Atlanta are aware and an upgrade is due in a week or two. It will automatically be sent to the box through the cable wire so all we can do is wait at the moment. The digital channels are almost unwatchable once you notice this problem so hopefully they will be fixed very soon.

Also, I'm still having audio/video dropouts frequently on HBOHD. TWC stated that HBO said it's their fault and are working on fixing it but that was weeks ago. My signal was already verified as being adequate so hopefully HBO will fix this soon too as it's getting VERY annoying.

From what I've found you should use the video out for watching analog/digital channels. I tried the Svideo out and it was much less desirable. Too grainy and too many artifacts that way.

Anyone else have any experience with the 3100 HD box around here?

I've finally got my 3100HDand and have no problems with picture quality (although I'm not particularly overwhelmed with anything I've seen other than the PBS feed).

I do have audio issues however. What happens is that when watching HD programming everything is OK until the commercials come on. As the final commercial ends and the HD program returns, the sound totally cuts out. The only way to get it back is to switch cable channels and the go back to the HD channel. This also happens if, following a commercial, there is a plug for the news, ie. "Coming up tonight at 11...". I've noticed this particularly on WBTV as that's the station I've watched most of. I don't think it's happend on PBS but it did also happen on HBO HD at the start of a movie.

Is this a common problem ? I'm using L/R audio leads as I don't have an amp that can use the digital audio signal (yet).

lrdiver
05-08-02, 11:45 PM
Yeah, I have had the same sound problem. It seems quite intermittent. So far, I have only seen it on HBO and SHO. Never on the local channels. This is generally accompanied with data drop outs in the video. When it gets bad enough, the sound goes away and does not return unless I change the channel and return to the one I had been watching. So far, I have not called TWC about the problem.
I did play with the iControl today. It's fun! It also works on the SA2100 non HD box. I have one of those on my old 19"TV. I did not actually realize that it was available until I got around to reading the mailing from TWC today. It does not appear on my program guide. You need to enter channel 1 and then you get it.

I am finding that the component output is quite a bit cleaner. Certainly the HD content is. Most notable to me is the reduction in MPEG artifacts. These can be quite visible on the normal digital channels but are totally absent on the HD content. The result is better then my HTPC which I was previously thrilled with. The resolution is also up a notch but this is probably limited by my monitor.
My viewing situation may be different then many of yours since I am using an XGA 4:3 LCD front projector. The component output, which is always 1080i, is presented as letter-boxed. The NEC VT540 projector detects 1080i and generates blacker then black top and bottom bars. I am viewing this on a 100' 4:3 screen. Any 4:3 content using the component input is then displayed in the center of the 16:9 area of the screen unless I use the zoom feature and blow it up to full screen.
Generally, the NTSC outputs seem to produce a better image of the full screen 4:3 video. If I zoom the 1080i 4:3 to full screen it does not look as good. I am seeing the best results using the SVIDEO output. This does not seem to have changed between the 3100 and 2100.
Those of you seeing excess noise and artifacts on SVIDEO might try reducing the sharpness control on your monitor. The higher bandwidth of the SVIDEO output may have more high frequency content and thus more noise. This also would mean that it may not need as much sharpness boost.

Sorry to resurrect an older thread...

Does anyone have an off-the-top-of-head list of HD channels that TW carries in Charlotte? I finally got my beta HD box replaced (which had been dead for a couple of months) with the new Scientific box a couple of weeks ago, and noticed that many of the HD channel locations had changed during my enforced-HD-hiatus.

For those folks who haven't received the new HD box, it still puts out quite a bit of heat - might want to watch the enclosed space you park it in.

Maybe we should put together a Charlotte AVS meet to check out some of the HD setups in the area sometime? Maybe a tour of those Fox HD broadcast facilities :)?

220 = CBS
225 = NBC
201 = PBS Demo
318 = HBO
230 = PBS sometimes, not very often will there be something on.

I cannot remember what Showtime is on? I cancelled Show and HBO. We are still waiting for FOX and ABC. Very soon there will be HDNET and Discovery HD No word on if these will be carried by TWC.

Add me to the "TWC 3100 Explorer HD Charlotte Club"...
Observations:
Occasional audio dropouts.
CBS is awesome to have so much of their stuff in HD.
TWC guys said I didn't need an amp.
Analog channels look as usual, here and there.
Digital channels don't look quite as soft as DirecTV- good or bad it depends.

Hey FOX guy, when are we going to see some FOX in HD on TimeWarner? and what does FOX even show in HD? anything?

By the way, ABC (WSOC HD) is on Channel 834...I just happened to come across it last night surfing. Now if they would only show MNF in HD.

"ABC (WSOC HD) is on Channel 834" How do you get this? Are they on all the time? I cannot get to channel 834? I have been waiting for ABC for a long time.

I wish FOX and TWC could work together. Seems all the other channels can work something out. It would appear that FOX might be to blame. If all other locals networks, can work something out why not FOX? Sounds like FOX might something want more then all the rest?

I also hear UPN might be High Def, soon? Then all we need is Discovery HD and HDNet when they broadcast for free later this year.

Scott- I think I've only seen programming on WSOCHD once for a small time and it may not have been HD, but I do know that my 3100 box when I go to the guide shows WSOCHD when I (and i do this cause it's easier for me to remember) type 800 as the channel and it pops onto WSOCHD. I do know that in communicating with the TWC folks that it was to come online this or next week, but I saw it there this weekend...maybe they are testing it out then will move to a 2xx channel. HDGalaxy lists some programming for ABC this week and I'll check it out again then.

Scott - What do you mean HDnet "free" programming? I don't understand. I know it is already "free" with DirecTV, but has there been some news re: Mark Cuban opening up to Cable companys?

Fox18- Thanks for anything you can do to help with "the cause." The bottom line is we just are committed viewers to HD and since I can't use my ReplayTV to skip commercials and record the stuff, dude I am back to watching commercials... isn't that great for you guys at the networks.

Reply I received from the wonderful folks at TWC Charlotte:
"We are testing ABC currently, but it is still "hidden" as a result. I do not know where it's final location will be but I would guess that 2xx is a good bet. "
"Discovery HD is on our radar screen and will happen at some time. HD net is another story but I believe that discussion is best left on the AVS forum."

I just got my HD cable box installed last week. Channel 358 comes in broken up or sometimes not at all. I have always had this same problem with ShowTime channels 350, 352 & 354. I have complained to Time Warner in the past but they have never really done anything about it. The person who installed the HD box said if it continues call in the problem. It wasn't a big deal as I never really watched 350, 352 & 354 & they have west coast feeds on 351, 353 & 355 that come in fine. But since there are only 6 HD channels not getting 358 hurts. I'll have to call again but was wondering if any one else has ever had this problem. The other alternative would be to drop down my service and get rid of ShowTime.

I don't get any of the HD pay channels... just PBS (2), CBS, NBC, ABC... This past weekend was a great HD weekend, esp. CBS sports. Caught portions of the "My Best Friends Wedding" ABC movie last night and it did register in DD5.1 though I couldn't really say that it was as good as a DVD's 5.1 sound. There were, especially with ABC, many audio dropouts and a few pixelization problems, but I think TWC is still testing ABCHD channel on ch.834. Didn't like that ABC switched the HD feed back to standard with about 5 minutes left in the movie. CBS did the same thing at 11pm... I wonder who directs that TWC, the Networks, or the Locals?

Hey FOX18 guy, just wanted to say that I now record your news@10 just to watch the Weather man. He is the funniest thing I've ever seen! I never thought I'd record the news here in Charlotte but your newscast is awesome. I have been complaining to everyone about how awful weather is and he does the weather the way it should be, entertaining. Thats how David Letterman got started you know. He was great after the American Idol shows with his song and dance. I think the sports guy though is prob. jealous of him. PS: If Fox get's rid of the weatherman, then no more FOX news for me FYI. I don't know how far it will get you to call them, I would assume they would tell you that it is not up and running now. I don't know why I get it, it seems that I "stumbled" upon it one day just running though the channels in the guide-listing. I inquired about it a while back and was told that they are infact testing it out and it would probably be "live" on a "2xx" channel. Don't know when that will be though. As they say: YMMV.

Thanks guys for the heads up on the channel change/update on ABC. Just in time for the ABC Thursday Movie (Liar Liar w/Jim Carrey). I think, like past ABC Big Picture Shows, it will be 720p DD5.1.
Also, I saw in the Charlotte Disturber (Observer) this morning that they are adding about 5 more "digital" stations (not HD)... Most were like Discovery something-or-another and Lifetime Women-something etc. I think that starts Sept. 23rd. (of course this I'm sure will be followed up by an increase in rates).

TWC will provide you with the 3100HD box which will serve as your "cable box" and as the High Definition Receiver...so you only need a High definition READY TV in order to receive the signals from TWC. Further, the box has Coax-Digital Audio Out for connection to a receiver. I don't know if there is a wait list though for the boxes.

I've got two HD-capable sets (projector and tube TV) and moving the box between them is a hassle.

Wow ! Anyone seen the new look i-Control and HBO on Demand? No waiting for the pages to load, a new , hi-resolution interface, fast response times and more programming including several free-view "making of..." documentaries. Also, moving i-Control off channel 1 in readiness for the launch of the new PVR functionality that will be accessed via channel 1. Well done TWC !!! Just get that deal with Discovery HD concluded and I'll be very happy.

Oh - anyone seen the commercial for Discovery HD? It came on one evening about a week ago. I thought it was announcing that it would be coming soon on TWC but at the end they said, "Call your cable or satellite provider...". Aaaargh!! They had me so excited for a few moments there.

i have just recieved the new HD3100 ....its nice but i cant get my replay tv to take on the new stations...i was not using a cable box before...but now i am....is there a different signal coming through the line now.....

miamijoe
10-30-02, 02:23 PM
I've got the same thing (HD3100 w/ Panasonic ReplayTV 80Gig upgraded)...
What I do is split the line coming out of the wall, one line goes to the HD3100 the other goes to the ReplayTV... then I send an S-Video cable out of the HD3100 to an input on the ReplayTV, while also sending Component Cables out of the HD3100 direct to the HD-Component inputs of the TV... I also send an S-Video out of the Replay to a different input of the TV. All of this so that I can Record 7th Heaven on the replay while watching live CBS Monday nights. As an aside, for NFL sunday ticket, that's coming into the Replay as well on input 3. It works like a charm and We love it.

Oh, and for the input/setups on the replay: I do it one step at a time...doing the analog coax cable settings first, then get the settings for "Digital Cable". There will be overlap so you will have to delete from replay the Digital Cable "analog" stations (2-70something).

RE: ABC audio out of sync... ABCHD here is still out of sync. It is my understanding from talking to TWC, that they have notified ABC about it. I know nothing else and it is still happening. The dropouts annoy me the most. Not much on CBS but ABC dropouts are frequent.

I have a Replay 4320 (320gb model), what I do costs a little more, but in my opinion is worth the money. Instead of running a cable line to the Replay, I have a standard digital box that does nothing except serve video to the Replay.

In other words, a seperate box (in this case standard Digital, not HD) that is then wired into the Replay. This way the Replay gets all my shows (digital or otherwise) and I don't have to worry about it.

Any idea if/when TimeWarner will roll out this PVR box in Charlotte?

11-13-02, 09:38 PM
I spoke with a rep today. He advised that the Explorer 8000 is officially slated for release into the Charlotte market in January but because of issues that have come up in tests in other markets this may be pushed back till May/June... we'll see what happens there. I'm a little more optimistic than the rep... poss. Jan/Feb. The problems that have arisen in other markets have been jumped on quickly by Scientific Atlanta who have issued several software patches over recent weeks.

Also, in Charlotte, Showtime On Demand is scheduled for launch on Nov. 20 with Max On Demand and Movie Channel on Demand due by the end of November. No word on the Free On Demand channels (such as CNN On Demand, Cartoon Network On Demand, etc.) but in other TW markets, these FOD channels have rolled out around the same time as the non-HBO On Demand movie channels so I expect to see the 10+ FOD channel package by the end of the month or possibly 1-2 weeks later.

We've had the 8000 since November 1st in Columbia,as well as the extra"free" on demand channels.I tried the 8000 for about 2 weeks as a alternative to my TiVo.Lets just say this box sucked, all kind of glitches and its only a NTSC box no ATSC.As for the "free" on Demand channels, they have very limited content and I don't think they have added any content since there launch.Oh by the way we only have CBS-HD ,and PBD-HD.

Just got TW HD Cable here in CLT. Looks great except for some compression type artifacts I see every so often. I guess that's just something you learn to live with.

I have a quick simple question for the experts here: The Scientific ATL HD cable box that TW gave me for some reason does not output sound on the channels below 60. Is this normal or is my box defective. If this is normal what have most of you done to work around this? Please dont say just not use the digital sound :)

Thanks

Henryg-

Unfortunatly, the channels below 60 are in their old analog system, there is no digital sound or picture for these channels with a few exceptions. (I believe AMC and Comedy Central are two.) I have a reciever that is set to play the analog if no digital signal is present, if you do not have this, then your only choice is to switch to analog. You only get digital if Time-Warner broadcasts it, unfortuatly, on these stations they don't.

Any word on those free On-Demand channels?

miamijoe
11-21-02, 02:55 PM
I've got the Digital Coax from the HD Cable box going to DD Receiver: My result is digital channels processed correctly while non-digital (2-70) I do get the sound but all comes out of my left main speaker (sort of a left-mono-thing). The analog audio out of the Cable box goes to the ReplayTV for recording purposes.

My recent problems: more frequent audio dropouts from CBS and now audio has been out of sync as well (though not as bad as ABC). I noticed it more on Monday CBS sitcoms. I guess I should just stop watching their mouths. ABC- I dont know what the deal is there... frequent audio drops and pretty noticable audio out-of-sync problems. Anybody else exp. the same?

Here's the very latest information on new service rollout for TW Charlotte.

Free On Demand - this package of 10 free On-Demand channels entered testing and soft launch on January 15th on channels 840-849. If you don't see them yet, you should over the next day or so. Channels include BBC on Demand, CNN on Demand, Comedy Channel on Demand, Food Network on Demand, Cartoon Network on Demand and a few others.

Explorer 800 PVR (personal video recorder) - this new Scientific Atlanta that has been available in several other Time Warner areas is finally about to be rolled out in Charlotte. TW Charlotte have received a delivery of boxes and has issed some to employees this week for testing. Look for customer rollout within 1-2 months.. on the one hand I wish it was sooner but on the other hand there have been lots of bugs with these boxes that customres in other areas have had to put up with. Hopefully by the time customers in this area get the boxes they will work relatively well.

We have had one of the Explorer 8000 DVR critters for a couple of months now (TWC SC, Columbia) and we are sold on it. My wife uses it exclusively now over the VCR for her daily time shifting. Highly recommend you get one when it comes out and give it a try.

The standard defintion model is the only model I have heard actually rolled out thus far though a HD has been rumored to be in development. While the 8000 still has a few bugs in it, SA is working on eliminating them. How well the box works will depends on your TWC and the firmware version they use and push down to the box (there are a couple of versions out there; here we have the latest it would appear which is dated Dec 15th). Our complaints are relatively minor and lost programs are rare.

For us it is definitlely worth the extra $5/mo over a standard digital box. Its quiet; cool; and seems to work pretty much as advertised with a few glitches. (The Firewire and VCR outputs have not been activated but the coax out does work). Since AVS has no forum on this DVR, may I suggest you all visit this site (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/explorer_8000/files/) for more info. Firmware versions and problems are being documented there and discussed there.

Guys, I'm near the Charlotte/Huntersville border and I'm having a hard time getting a good signal through a Terk indoor antennae.

What do you all use? Also, is there any info on Time Warners website about HDTV? Please post a link.

Any word if they're going to get ESPN HD? I've got DirecTV now, and I'm going to get their HD box soon unless I can't get the channels any better.

I second the question on ESPN HD and HDNet. HDNet is now on Comast Cable. I am still waiting for FOX, and Discovery HD. I also live in Huntersville, but I use TWC for HD

miamijoe
03-15-03, 09:29 AM
The only real reference to HD on TWC's website is in the channel listings (showing which channels are HD). I never did the antenna route and went with TWC. I'm over by Concord Mills. I was close to using the Radio Shack Double Bowtie method discussed here at AVS and at the HTspot but I wasn't ready to buy an HD box. Don't know about stock, you may have to call around at the local RS's.
I've gotten most of my info about TWC's HD offerings by emailing them through their website. You'll eventually get a reply back from Dave Kruger, who has been really great and as helpful as possible with me. I also wish the offerings would increase. Last I heard, DiscoveryHD was "close."

Does TWC offer HDNet like DirecTV does?

miamijoe
03-17-03, 08:28 AM
Tried it already... If you look closely at the channel listings (I haven't in a while so they may have fixed it) the HD channels are colored as apart of the "Basic Package" which I used to have before going all out. The basic package is just the locals and costs only about $8. Wouldn't it be nice... So I tried to call CSR's to get in through the backdoor since they don't generally know what's going on, but it seems that you pretty much have to have the Digital package in order to get the HD stations. I've not seen HDNet on any channels.

If that is true (the Basic cable & HD channels), I need to get on the phone with the TWC folks. Two days ago I got an unsolicited phone call from TWC asking me to sign up for Showtime(s) for $10/mo. for 3 months minimum and I would get a $50 Home Depot Gift card. I declined but asked them about the Basic cable (locals only) with HD channels and the guy asked around to some other people (he seemed like he wanted to help me out) and came back on and told me I had to have digital cable package to get the HD's. Is the "Basic cable" package you refer to the Locals only $8 package? or the $30 channels 2-70 package?

Scientific-Atlanta has just released a new High Definition Cable box, the “New-generation Explorer 3250HD” set top box.
This new HD cable box has several improvements over the 3100HD box.
The biggest being able to “stretch and zoom capabilities for HDTVs”
I assume this would mean you would be able to watch full screen non-HD programming via the component mode without having to switch back to the S-Video or composite connection.
You can read there press release at http://www.sciatl.com/news/03Apr07-3.htm
I contacted Time Warner to ask if they plan on upgrading to this new HD set top but they had no idea as to what I was talking about.

I just got the Pioneer HD box installed over the weekend (they came out and swapped the box for my Scientific Atlanta box for no charge).

I'm pleased with the new Pioneer box. I like the fact that I can watch non-HD channels in stretch or zoom mode on my widescreen TV (through the component inputs). I also like the fact that I can get info. on HD programming while continuing to watch the HD program. Same goes for the program guide.

Incidentally, I also got the Scientific Atlanta 8000 DVR as well. It's so easy to use that my ever-skeptical wife even loves it. The series recording feature is not nearly as sophisticated as Tivo, but it's great that you can record two shows at once and is signficantly cheaper. I had heard about all the bugs, but so far, in a few weeks worth of use, I haven't had any problems (knock on wood). I can't wait to get the HD version of this box when it becomes available.

Has anyone heard of any new HD offerings from Time Warner?

I just got the Pioneer box as well. Its only difference for me it the stretching aspect of the new box. i do love not have to change inputs on the tv to watch regular programming. This box was just right now a waste of time considering there are not that many HD channels yet, and its going to be some time before we get anymore. ESPN HD wants to charge for that. And Fox HD is going to be awhile as well.

I wish they would hurry up and negotiate. I would like to have ESPN HD and Fox HD before the football season starts.

I swapped out my SA HDTV box & picked up the Pioneer HD box today at the Arrowood office & installed it myself. All I had to do was to call Time Warner & ask them to activate the box. I was wondering what the proper Output Formats should be. It has 480i, 480p, 720p & 1080i & you can select any one or a combination of all of them. While I am somewhat familiar with what each format is I was wondering what the recommended setting was. I noticed you can select all of them however if you have 720p selected ABC HD channel does not come in. I’ll try and call the TW HDTV desk and ask one of the technicians. I was just wondering if someone had TW install this box what they set the Output Formats at? Also when you use the S video output the HD station have a picture. (although not a HDTV quality picture) I was wondering if this had to do with selecting multiple output formats.
I also noticed that the Pioneer box does not have an electrical outlet to plug in the TV & it does not have a coaxial cable out connection. Not a big deal as I have an outlet on my receiver & don’t need a coaxial out connection.
All in all I’m pretty happy with this box.

E137811: Couple quick answers/observations... S-Video cable does not send an HD signal through it. You need Component Video Cables for that and the Components will send all the stations to the TV. (I assume your TV has HD capability and component in's)
RE: Selection... I've not got the box, still have the old one but sounds to me like I'd choose the "all" selection and not peg it down to one or the other assuming that the "all" selection is kind of an "auto-select." Example: ABC sends HD in 720p, CBSHD is generally 1080i... if the "all" can automatically identify the signal and send it without problem to the HDTV monitor then I'd just keep it in the "all" setting. If it does not, then you may have to get up and switch the setting when you change the channel from, say, ABCHD to CBSHD. Also, try it when there is HD programming actually being shown. ABC usually has an HD movie in 720p on Saturday nights and CBS is almost all HD for their Primetime programming.
Another note... your TV may not be able to accept a 720p signal and may convert it to 1080i or 480p??? Check the manual/websites for the TV part.
Please let us know of your results with TWC folks. I'd rather keep mine which will pass all signals without "switching" if the new one doesn't do it automatically.
Good Luck

miamijoe: sorry I was not more specific: I know you can only get HDTV via the component mode (3 cable video connection). I just thought it was strange that while I had my TV in the S video mode I got a picture on the HDTV stations. (by the way this box also has a DVI connection which a lot of the LCD HDTV have.)
The Output Format option does not have an 'all' selection but it does allow you to select more than one format. I have 1080i, 480p, & 480i selected. I have a windscreen HDTV ready TV set but it does not accept 720p as most HDTV do not (as a 720p will get converted to 1080I).
Anyway I had no problems watching all stations in the component mode on my TV last night. The box automatically adjusts when you switch from a HDTV station to a regular station. It also allows you to use your TVs aspect ratio control in component mode for non HDTV stations. I haven't heard back from TW HDTV folks yet but when I do I'll let you know what they say. If you want to see the press release Pioneer put out on this box it's at:

e... quick question on the pioneer. I've got a 720p capable set. Can this box automatically pick up the 720p signals (say from ABC programming)? Does the box say "hey looks like a 720p signal" and if you've given the box the "green light" goahead and pass the 720p or will it up/down convert it?
(and thanks for the pioneer press release).

e137811
05-27-03, 11:58 AM
Interesting question. From what I have read on other BBs I was
under the impression that the HDTV box made this decision.
(In this case the pioneer box) This is the first box I have seen that
lets you set the format. That might be the reason I can view a
HDTV station while my TV is in S video mode. (converting the signal to 480p) I just assumed on the SA HDTV box I had that it was converting the 720p signal from ABC To 1080i. I would assume if you select 780i on this box and your HDTV can receive 780I that’s what you would get a 780I signal. Of course the only way you could be sure is to ask one of the HDTV guys at TW. By the way here is another forum I occasionally check out. (HDTV Magazine forum)

e....the 3510hd should be set to 1080i.thats the "all format" youre looking for. This should not be changed. The box has a built in scaler which converts hd to sd so the channels can still be viewd even through outputs other than component. This is what also allows for viewing of the guide while watching hd video. The dvi connector doesnt work.So far its not been activated for mass use.And for miamijoe ....if you set the box at 720p then that is where it stays. There is no auto switching function or "green light" per say,to tell you theres any difference in signals. This box is still new so twc hasnt had a lot of time with it.But if you have more questons feel free to call'em back!Someone is usually in Mon-Friday.

Thanks e... & Vash... I think I'm gonna keep the current box I've got. Seems like with these "manual" switch boxes HD Cable boxes and HD OTA receivers, the technology is going backwards. I don't want to have to get up from the couch each time I change channels from ABC's Monday Night Football (720p) and CBS's monday night Everybody Loves Raymond (1080i) to flip a switch. As HD programming becomes more prevalent, it seems like the hassle would just grow. Thanks again for all the info.

miamijoe,

I have the Pioneer box and it is a big improvement over the SA box, especially if you have a widescreen TV. You can select the output using the remote to match your TV specs. My understanding is that it would upconvert the signal to 1080i if it is 720p for example, but I am no expert. It might automatically adjust instead, but the bottom line is that I don't ever change the output and the picture quality is great. It also seems like I have had a lot less dropouts since switching boxes.

Mhorn is right. The 3510hd is a big improvement over the sa box if you have a widescreen and no you wont have to get up and flip a switch.I have great reception at 1080i.And the aspect controls are better than I've seen on a lot of tv's.But they can simply be changed from the remote if you just have to do it.Ther is no manual switch on the box.Just something 4 u to think about miamijoe.

I finally found this thread - not letting go of it :)
Ok I am picking up the new box today, swapping it for the old SA box - couple of questions:

My Toshiba already has input memory so it maintains the right stretchmodes for each input - how is this affected?

Is the stretchmode good? - once again the Toshiba is supposed to be better at this so don't want to loose on the PQ.

If I think the PQ is worse because of the stretch - can I set the box to receive a normal signal and then stretch it in the tv.

Which is normally better at upconversion - the box or the TV. It sounds to me like ABC should either be converted by the box or the TV (assuming that you have that function) by the unit that is the best for doing this.

Finally this is my major problem - I have had tons of blackouts on ABC - is this happening to everyone else out there??? I have called ABC, TW and they can't send someone until Saturday so going to miss the rest of the games this week :( - hoping the new box will solve some of it but we will see tonight.

i do know their is a patch cable for component to dvi connections you can buy and this will get you hd on your set.Just ask at a local a/v store or someplace like comp usa.others have had to do the same thing and it works on their sets so that should solve your problem! So its component from the box to dvi on the tv set.the cable does exist and once you have it and an hdtv box you'll have finally reached the promised land!

Vash_,

I couldn't help but notice the input for an upload on this box called control. Does this mean I can upload and activate the DVI? Or just give in to the adapter and return my 90 dollar DVI male to male cable. 6 dollars, is that dvi-d. Oh well thanks

ksk1186,
The IR control port is for an external remote sensor that can be connected to the box for long distance use in the home. Its not for downloading anything and the dvi connector is on the box but not internally connected. So the cable I mentioned is what you will need.

bdfox18doe,

Any chance that we will get the digital fox on Time Warner in the near future?

It's my understanding that you guys and TW have been talking for quite awhile about adding it, but it looks like no resolution yet. I for one would watch Fox more if it were on the digital tier.

Thanks for any update you can provide.

That is great news about Fox Sports South, but I was in fact referring to the digital version of Fox 18. I wonder if the local affiliate is already equipped for true HD transmission, since according to the rumor mill, Fox may be gearing up for that in the larger markets.

Bob, since Fox doesnt send out any true HD, it seems you should have enough bandwith even with the SAP and the weather radar to run some sort of hd "demo loop". Would there be any possibility of this happening?

bdfox18doe
06-10-03, 03:04 PM
No, as we do not have any local HD playback gear on hand, and have no plans to add that capability. Actually, we don't have any spare bandwidth, as we are running 18-1 at 15m/b, so there is no room for additional video.
(18-2 is the same video as 18-1) and 18-3 Weather takes up the rest.

Should FOX deliver us an HD feed, we can have it on-air on about 10 minutes, as the system is designed for it...

mhdiab
06-10-03, 04:10 PM
Well FSN might not be Fox regular in HD, but to me it states that Fox is moving towards HD. Hopefully when copyright issues etc are solved they should be onboard :)

It is good to know that you are equipped - to much good stuff on Fox and now when it seems like we will have more and more HD they run a risk of falling behind in the ratings (I realize that it takes a while for enough people to turn on HD for it to make a dent in the ratings, but still)

This must be a fairly new addition to the local Time Warner website.

http://www.twcarolina.com/services/...es/hdtv_faq.asp

They are now advertising HD. Interestingly, they only advertise the SA 3100HD box (not the Pioneer 3510HD), but they also state that later this year they will be using the 8000HD (or some other HD DVR). Right now I have a DVR on a secondary TV, but wish I could have it on my widescreen HD (right now, I have the Pioneer HD box hooked up to it). I'm glad to see that we will be getting the HD DVRs this year. If they do so, I will have become a loyal satellite to cable convert (it's hard to believe that I would ever say that).

Bob just wanted to let you know, I think WCCB-DT is the only station in the area sending out the correct time and guide data all the time. I noticed on the other Charlotte stations, the time can be up to 10 minutes off on my Samsung TR151 or the guide data doesnt come up all the time. WCCB-DT is the only exception to this, whatever you are doing, keep it up. The only thing I don't like is between midnight and 6am it saids "WCCB Digital Service" or something to that affect instead of the acutal program info, will this be "fixed" anytime soon? BTW, has anyone noticed that recently WAXN-DT isn't remapping to 64, it stays on 50. WCNC-DT and WBTV-DT have finally started more consistently sending out the guide data.

Yeah, at least you're sending the data, I just talked with WSOC and they're running on backups, so no guide data. Is anybody else having this issue with the Pioneer 3510??

2) There is no Cable Out jack on the Pioneer 3510....only s-video....and I was getting a clearer signal through the Cable Out on my old SA...

2) There is no Cable Out jack on the Pioneer 3510....only s-video....and I was getting a clearer signal through the Cable Out on my old SA...

I have the exact same issue so here is what I did: I ran the coax from the wall into a splitter. One coax from the splitter straight to the TV so I get a good analog picture. Then I ran the second coax to the STB and then S-Video and the component back over to the TV. The S-Video is supreme for Digital and Component well a must for the HD, but the coax is the best for the analog channels....This works find and I really did not have a pq change after introducing the splitter into the setup

Shine's answer should take care of question 1 - let us know if not. He is on the money you can set the STB in the extra settings to put out 4:3 / 16:9 picture depending on what it receives, you can also set what format it outputs - 480p,108i,720p,480i - great little box. In Charlotte they have the manual on Channel 411 (I think or right around there). It is a OnDemand function so you just go and look for the subject you need help with - pretty smooth.

mhdiab
06-26-03, 05:58 PM
Bob in addition to the above post - is the plan to put the 480p channel on TW and then once you are passing through 720p it will be converted. Without understanding the technical part of the broadcasting to much shouldn't they be able to have digital channel and if you sent 480p then they broadcast 480p and if it is 720p on the same channel they switch - just like the regular HDTV channels shows regular non-hd programming when there is no HD.

Fox digital then HD in Charlotte would be awsome :)

Regarding ABC - I think I have had issues in and out with this Feed for the past two months. For a short time ABC told me they had a problem, but before and after once in a while it has been bad. The Drew Cary show last night kept coming in and out during the first episode, then it was fine during the second episode.

Has anyone in the Charlotte Time Warner Cable area been able to get local HD channels (200-235) by just having Basic cable service and renting an HD box from them? Everyone I've spoken to says that you must get at least the Digital Variety Package (about $55.00) per month to include HD locals!
This doesn't seem fair. I thought cable companies were supposed to include any local feed (analog or HD) in their basic packages.

actually you can get HD from TWC by getting the HD box with basic only.If a csr doesnt know then ask for someone in the HD dept.Several people have asked about this before and I'm sure it was posted earlier.Just takes a phone call. The HD channels are on basic with the exception of HBO and SHowtime.

It does appear that discovery is being tested per a call I just made.Thats why its "hidden" from normal viewing.Of course theirs always some issue to work out prior to a network being fully enabled but hopefully we'll see it sooner than later on and active for everyone to see!

*can you hear me big brother?!?!

mhdiab
06-27-03, 02:59 PM
herrfish - you have a legal right from 1992 to get the channels without subscribing to more than regular cable - rent the box and you should get them. Additionally you also have a legal right to get the HBO and SHO package without getting digital cable - this is a less known fact, but well documented on this site with the appropriate links around like the one below.

http://yahoo.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2002/tc2002116_0167.htm

so you can get all HD without getting digital cable - not sure of the price of the HBO and SHO if you don't get the main package. If the CSR says no - go to the manager etc - this is the law and they have no right to refuse this....

Just curious from those who are in the Charlotte area through TWC with HD, I know they've recently switched from SA hardware to the Pioneers, and I'm wondering what the comparison of features and advantages/negatives are.

Also, on the broadcasts themselves, are the local channel HDs as good as the Discovery/HBO/SHO feeds in terms of PQ and sound?

07-21-03, 08:09 AM
I can't remember the number on the box (3250???), but I prefer it in some ways and not in others :)
The box doesn't have coax out so you are stuck with S-video and Component. Problem is that the analog channels sucks with S-Video - the digital are much better and the HD ones are HD with component. I therefore run a splitter so Coax goes straight from the wall for the analog channels and S-video for digital and component for HD. This sucks because of audio etc setup so bunch of switching with the remotes when I use the coax option. However with this said I really like that the box can be set for output of format of both 4:3 vs 16:9 and 1080i, 720p and 480i and p - I have the box upconvert to 1080i / 480 and it is quicker than the tv at doing this and the stretchmodes are automatically correct / not stretched - works great

that is my input - others agree / disagree?
does anyone know when they will put the indemandhd on? It is being tested right now, but obviously not in Charlotte :)

Mhorn
07-21-03, 11:49 AM
The Pioneer 3250HD is a definite improvement over the SA 3100HD. Still not perfect, but an improvement nonetheless. As far as the DVI output, I am not sure if it is active as I don't have a DVI input on my HD TV. I noticed a discussion in the STB forum in the last week or so regarding the DVI output on this box. From what I remember, it's active for some TW folks, but not for most at this point. Not sure about Charlotte.

While you would normally check with TW, you might have better luck going by the Tweeter store on Independence as they demonstrate the TW stuff and are pretty knowledgable. They might be able to test the box using the DVI output.

As far as specific advantages to the 3250HD, the variety of display formats as discussed above and the ability to display the current HD channel while in the guide and see info. for an HD program without the screen going black (i.e., it can combine HD and non-HD on one screen).

mhdiab

thee current HD channel while in the guide and see info. for an HD program without the screen going black (i.e., it can combine HD and non-HD on one screen).

Forgot this - this is a great function. The menu is slower on HD channels, but the menu is there and that is great. Also the channel graphic (like what channel) is also working.

Question though: Is it really non-hd and hd or does it make all of it non-hd? Like with this box you can watch the HD channels trough s-video which is good to find out what is showing without having to switch to HD, so thought this is how they use the menu while on an HD-channel - does anyone know?

I traded in my HD box for the DVR recently and I can't wait to start watching HD channels again. I know I could have both the existing dvr and an hd box running together but there's no way my wife would be able to figure out how to move between the two so that just will not fly. TWC needs to roll these new HD-DVR boxes out as quick as they can.

You're in luck Dave! Charlotte is a hotbed of HDTV activity. All 4 of the major networks have digital transmitters as well as the local WB, UPN, and PBS affiliates. (Although the PBS affiliate, WTVI, seems to be stuck in a perpetual pledge drive and preempts a bunch of HD programming because of it - we haven't seen any of the recent Soundstage programs in HD for example; I'm cutting them off from contributions because of it).

On this particular Forum, seems like most participants get their HD through TimeWarner Cable which may or may not have all of the local stations mentioned above. They've been "trying to negotiate" a deal with the local FOX affiliate for over a year and can't seem to get it done, so the only way to see "24" in digital HRTV is via OTA antenna. Like me! :)

Will Fox18 pass through the National Feed 16:9 game on the digital station and do the Panthers game on the analog ch.18? I assume that League rules preclude you from doing that.
Further, Mark Mathis is a Hoot! I actually now watch and record on my ReplayTV the 10:00 news just to see if he is on it. I know he is a "love-him or dislike-him" kind of personality but... if he goes, so does this viewer. Thanks bdfox18 !

Fox18 should do the news in 16:9... this would give Mark Mathis more room to dance and sing! He could use the extra the camera space.

Now that we've gotten WCCB-DT, we need to push for ESPN-HD from Time Warner Cable. I sent them an email and got a reply that they hoped to be able to add ESPN-HD by the END OF THE YEAR! It that's the case, I might just have to get it from Directv because I sure would like to have Sunday night football in HD.

At any rate, all of those who are interested in ESPN-HD might want to send an email or letter to TWC making them aware of your interest.

herrfish,

They are well aware of the desire for ESPN-HD, the problem is the fees that ESPN wants to charge. TWC would like to add it without raising rates or making it a subscription channel, but ESPN wants to charge extra for it.

How true! I'm all for the free ESPN-HD channel.Even with Directv you have to pay for it.As its been said so many times here, charging for HDTV sets a dangerous platform for channels going HD.Imagine 25 HD channels that all want 5.00 each! What a nightmare!I like ESPN too but I pay for it now as it is.Its not like the HD channel has any programming different from the standard channel!

I'm Ok with "by the end of the year" - as long as it happens. That's when Sportscenter is going HD and it will be just in time for some ACC basketball. Plus, it's almost September anyway. The "end of the year" is just over 3 months away.

What I don't like is the - "we don't know when or if we are going to carry ESPN-HD"

(hope you guys don't mind a Triangle resident chiming in)

Remember, even if ESPN-HD is carried by TW, all the good ACC games will be on WBTV/WRAL and will be blacked out even if they're HD on ESPN. :(

While this (unfortunately) will be true in a great number of cases, I've definietly watched some high profile ACC games on ESPN, leading me to think they could be availabe to me on ESPN-HD.

Also, I read somewhere (though I'm still very skeptical) that there are different blackout rules for HD. Anyone know?

Question: Doesn't WRAL do HD so we would get it in HD? Wasn't in Charlotte last season so not sure how this works - appreciate the info.

Nope. Blackout rules are blackout rules, and make no distinction in regards

I'm really enjoying the digital Fox channel on TW. While it's not HD, the widescreen content on the digital channel is much improved over the analog channel.

Looking forward to the switch to HD in 2004.

Bob I have noticed that WCCB is sending out a 1080i signal, when FOX does 720p will you continue to do 1080i or will you broadcast native 720p?

bdfox18doe
08-28-03, 08:16 AM
We'll have to switch to 720p when FOX goes, otherwise we'd have to cross convert them and we don't want to do that. Besides, since WOLO-DT and WCCB-DT share common equipment, It makes things here much simpler.

Here's the latest info for the Charlotte TWC Division:

INHD and INHD2 were supposed to be added today, but they're still working on some technical issues. $5.95 per month for both channels. They will be located on 290 and 291.

NBA TV launches October 1st, channel number will probably be 250

ESPN is still in negotiations, don't look for a deal anytime soon.

Ok, need some help from you fellow TW HD customers. I currently have the Panasonic HD box, which I feel is vastly superior to the SA box. The problem I am having is that WSOCHD will not come in, my TV (A Mits) just blues it out because the picture won't stop rolling. If I change the output settings on the box to 480p, it comes in clear as a whistle. I have had three techs out to see, all of which were stumped and were going to escalate the ticket. The last one was at my house a month ago. Oh well. Anyway, the box has been replaces once, but this did not correct the problem. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

James

jmccurrytech

If 480p works and 1080i works, your tv is fine.
If setting it to 720p causes the problem, then your tv doesnt do 720p.
If 1080i nor 720p works, then your TV only does "Enhanced" definition.

09-15-03, 06:18 PM
One more thing that I left out. This problem started this past summer, without any previous issues. My TV does 720p, so the problem has got to be on the cable side. I just don't know what else to tell those guys to try and help them out. They're lost.

jr - not sure if I am not reading your stuff properly, but have you tried to have the box ONLY output 1080i and if that didn't work only 720p?

This is what the others are trying to say. You have an HD tv, but I am 99.99% sure that it doesn't do both 1080i and 720p since extremely (almost none) few tv's does this. There are some tv's that can then convert the 1080i to 720p. Other tv's will not be able to so if you feed 720p you cannot see the picture. The old box didn't have these options - think it just converted straight to 1080i (might be wrong) so you didn't know.

Yes mhdiab you are right. The old HD box upconverted everything to 1080i no matter what your tv accepted. And jrmckinn I'm just going from memory here but I dont seeem to remember any mits that did 720native and 1080i.When you change the box output you are setting the limit so if it loses pic on the 720p setting and its supposed to accept 720 then something is wrong. But if you can see WSOC on the 1080i and 480p setting then like most HD sets thats probably what its built for. Also TWC here no longer has a HDTV dept hence the no answer or voicemail.

Namcap - disagree - they don't want to charge twice for HD. Inhd 1 and 2 doesn't exist as SD channels - ESPN does. To me it is a big difference and I will pay for this and am ok with their policy so far despite the fact that I would love ESPN-HD

So no separate Charlotte TW HD dept. anymore. What a shame considering the regular customer service reps. are clueless about HD. Anyone know who you can complain to about this? Does anyone know if Phil is still around? He was always particularly helpful.

I asked a customer service rep. about InHD and the HD DVR. Her supervisor said the HD DVR is being tested, but won't be released to customers until January or so of next year. With respect to InHD, my impression is they are working on how to package this channel. It would be interesting to see what responses are given to other people who call in. As always, the rep. said my bill would state when additional HD channels are added and when the HD DVR is available. I'm so tired of that line, because my bill never has that information. I am just pleasantly surprised when a new channel shows up. Same with the newer Pioneer HD box. If I hadn't called in, I would still have the SA 3100 HD STB.

Rumor has it that it's the Pioneer 4000. However, good luck in getting any confirmation from TWC, especially now that they've flushed "Phil the HD guy". Hopefully, if anyone can crack the veil of secrecy, they'll immediately post on here and let us all know!

I'm probably going to pull the trigger on the DISH DVR921 when it comes available in around 6 weeks or so. But, if TWC deploys this rumored rental DVR, I'd probably go in that direction. I simply must have HD time-shifting capability, but why spend $1k if you don't have to?

I don't know how knowledgable ol' Phil is; he had no clue about an HD-DVR when I spoke with him about, oh, 3 weeks ago, around the time it was supposedly deployed for beta testing. And, if he was the "HD guy", certainly he would have been one of the testers, don't you think?

I agree, we do need an insider to inform the Charlotte public about the reality in store for 4Q 2003.

On another note, back in June, Phil was the guy who informed me about the HD-DVR. Back then, he mentioned that it was going to be the Pioneer Voyager 4000. Then about a month ago, a writer for the Observer confirmed that they were beta testing a HD-DVR. Here's the old thread...

Time Warner Corporate is still trying to negotiate a way to distribute the 2 channels free, they have agreement but would have to charge $5.95 a month as I stated earlier. I'm glad they are trying to work out a cheaper solution for us, even if it means us waiting a month or two extra. Also, I'm trying to get my hands on one of those HD-DVRs to test out. I received the monthly TWC Charlotte newsletter on email this morning and noticed that they are taking a survey about HDTV use.

The questions are:

Do you own a HDTV (Yes; No)?
If not, are you planning on purchasing one (Yes, in the next 6 months; Yes, in the next 12 months; Yes, in the next 24 months; Never; I haven't thought about it)?

Please make sure HDTV usage is properly tracked (so us HDTV users get our proper respect) and respond to the quick survey in your email. Here's the latest TWC Charlotte Division information:

Fuel and NBA TV have been added to the sports tier.
NBA TV is supposed to show HD, when available, but I don't know.
INHD and INHD2 will launch in a HD tier with ESPN on Nov. 3rd.
HDNet and HDNet movies will probably be included in this tier, but I can't say 100%.
Pricing is still up in the air regarding this HD tier, I will post more information as it becomes available.
TW is in the process of upgrading their systems. If the correct time does not consistently appear on your box, unplug it for 15 seconds, then plug it back in. If the problem does not fix itself after 30 minutes, call customer service at 1-877-566-4892.

Jmcurry - thanks a bunch for the information much appreciated.
I have no problem with this - inhd 1 and 2 are new channels and so is HDNET so charging me for it is no problem what so ever. I have also stated in the past that ESPN-HD is an exception to the rule in the fact that I am ok paying twice for it :)

Lets have a guessing game 10.99? 15.99? - depends on HDNet I think.
5.99 for inhd 1 and 2 we kind of know that - another 5 bucks for ESPN and then 5 for the rest - sounds to much and hoping for 10 bucks or I will have to cancell a bunch of other stuff

Funny there are some other discussion on the HD programming page about how TW and Disney can't come to an agreement and here is a date - sweet

Ia anyone else having trouble with the two Fox digital channels 240 & 241? I have yet to get a watchable picture. Most times it is just black screen. When there is something there, it artifacts then locks up.

I have the Pioneer BDV3500HD box with DVI. I am using the DVI connection to my Toshiba 57HDX82. I have no problem with any other channel. The Toshiba accepts 480i, 480p, 1080i and 720p. It has 3:2 pulldown. I am located in Concord.

I have tried using the YPrPb and the Fox channels do the same artifacts and or lockups.

Is anyone getting the Fox digitals clear? If so, what TWC box and hookup are you using. BTW, the DVI clarity is awesome. I have a service call scheduled with TWC, but don't hold much hope since I had to request then walk the techs through the Pionner box. Thanks

mhdiab
10-03-03, 10:12 AM
No trouble - get good picture. Can't remember the box number (for some reason) but it is the latest one they have for HD. I run it through component, but have the box set to only output 1080i. This way it is much quicker and smoother to get a picture than to have my Toshiba do the conversion. Try that and see what happens - if that changes it then it is the tv that has the problem - note that the Toshiba converts it to 540p and doesn't leave it as 480p. Hookup is just straight from the TW box to the tv

So does the DVI work for all channels or should I just look at it as a replacement for the component cables from the box to the tv?

Thanks
