Is KGPT still airing Universal Sports on 49.2? I'm looking at their listings on Titan TV and it has listings for Spanish programming instead of Universal Sports, and they haven't made any change on their website mentioning this. Just wondering.

It is on 49.4.
Kansas Zephyr 08-07-10, 10:34 AM FWIW...KGPT is now on DirecTV (49.1 only though).
UPDATE:
It turns out that KGPT has moved Azteca America to 49.2, from KSMI...and DirecTV is carrying 49.2, not 49.1 RTV, as channel 49. :(
Universal Sports has been moved to KSMI.

Cox just announced a new "Whole Home" DVR along with an overhauled user interface. Looks good so far!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/cox-plus-package-brings-advanced-trio-ui-500gb-multiroom-dvr/
They'll roll it out to all of their markets by the end of the year. No word on pricing, though.
Has anyone gotten the new Cisco box yet? Cox was playing commercials for this in early summer but I haven't seen any lately.

Every one who wants The Weather Channel in HD on Cox must call and request it. I have called many times about adding it. We need lots of people calling them to send the message that Kansas wants it.
neverknow12 10-20-10, 06:43 PM Has anyone gotten the new Cisco box yet? Cox was playing commercials for this in early summer but I haven't seen any lately.
They are in a test phase right now. I called in back when I saw the first commercial this Summer and made it on to the list that I wanted to hear more information about it. I called back in a couple of times because the dates they told me it was going to be released kept being passed. Long story short, I think I bugged them enough that I made it onto the 2 month "test phase" - where I'm getting it for free.
I got my whole home DVR system installed yesterday and I'm pretty impressed with it!
Main Host Unit: Cisco Explorer 8642HDC
Client Unit(s): Cisco Explorer 1642HDC
Notes as of right now, Cox might change this up by the time it is actually released.
Must setup series to record on the new box. (Kind of a pain if you record a large number of shows.) Only currently records on main box (2 shows at one time.)
Can only setup recordings on the 8642.
Fast forwarding on the client is choppy (hard to tell where to press play after commercial.)
Has new TRIO guide which I like and integrates search to look at on demand recordings. You can still look at the guide in grid view if that's what you prefer.
That's basically all that I can note as now. If you have any questions or would like me to try out anything, let me know!

So is their plan to do double coverage over Wichita like KAKE, while we out here in the sticks of the DMA get crap? These stations were stupid in going back to VHF in the first place. KWCH learned that and flipped with KSCW (12 to 19).
KAKE still has an analog transmitter here in Salina while KSN has a digital one but its SD only.
stevea20 11-02-10, 11:20 PM I noticed that KSN had their 10 PM news in full HD. I don't know if this was only for the election coverage or if this is going to be permanent.
It seems like if they can do it for one newscast, they should be able to do it for all newscasts.
And I noticed that KAKE was able to run the results at the bottom and remain in 16 X 9. Is this new or have I been missing it? If they can do this hopefully the weather crawls and the station identifications wont revert to sidebars.

Most of the KU game on KSN was in HD last night, as well. Definitely looks like they're upgrading some of their equipment (finally)!
stevea20 11-03-10, 06:08 PM KSN had full HD for the 5pm and 6pm news today. So it looks like it's permanemt. It looks a lot better. They have blue sidebars for anything not in high definition.
Now KAKE needs to gets theirs act going.

I'm not sure this is full HD. JD Rudd said before the 10pm newscast on Monday that they were going to widescreen format. He did not say HD. And just looking at it, to me it doesn't really look like HD.

When I said full HD, I meant that it filled the whole screen without stretching. I know that Cox only broadcasts in 1080i.
My D-VHS MPEG2 capture program shows:
Size: 1920 x 1080
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: 29.97 fps
Bit Rate: 38.8104 Mbps
schick81 11-05-10, 04:08 AM And I noticed that KAKE was able to run the results at the bottom and remain in 16 X 9. Is this new or have I been missing it? If they can do this hopefully the weather crawls and the station identifications wont revert to sidebars.
KAKE has been able to do this for at least the last eight months. The August primary election had results airing without dropping to SD. And, if you remember the series finale of "Lost" in May, the show stayed in HD throughout, even though there were some brief weather warnings that in the old days would have resulted in dropping to SD to air them.
schick81 11-05-10, 04:35 AM I'm not sure this is full HD. JD Rudd said before the 10pm newscast on Monday that they were going to widescreen format. He did not say HD. And just looking at it, to me it doesn't really look like HD.
You're right in that it doesn't really look like HD, because it's most definitely SD being aired in a 16x9 widescreen format. Even though the PSIP may say it's 1080i, it doesn't necessarily mean it's native HD content, in this case it's 480i widescreen, upconverted to 1080i widescreen.
Compare the old 4x3 newscasts to the 16x9 shows begun this week and you'll notice the camera shots still exhibit the same level of detail, sharpness and depth. Believe me, if it were true HD like KWCH is broadcasting, you'd notice the difference.
As for KAKE joining KWCH and KSNW in at least providing widescreen newscasts, all we can do is hope their corporate parent is finally ready to let loose the purse-strings to fund the infrastructure conversion.
Jeff747 11-05-10, 08:22 AM It is noticeable that not all of KSN's video sources are true HD, even watching on my 32"

jeffdb27 11-05-10, 08:48 AM Speaking of KSN and HD, a little something from their web page (http://www.ksn.com/content/about/digitaltv/story/Digital-television-on-KSN/d2Mwv_2xVkaGhzzO0IAxwA.cspx):
KSNW transmits all available HD programming in High Definition. KSN's satellite stations transmit those digital signals in standard definition.
This is obviously not true, as both Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are available in HD and are not transmitted that way by KSN.

Jeff747 11-12-10, 01:39 PM Yes, KSN would be bragging about it, but so would KAKE if they were in the same position.
jeffdb27 11-16-10, 07:46 PM KSN is a joke. Pseudo HD for the news. No syndicated programming in HD. And now they delay network programming (the Event) until 3am and show that in SD. The recent Jayhawk games look like upconverted SD too. How cheap are these bozos?

I like the 16x9 format for the news. Sure, HD would be better but it is a nice gap closure. HD conversion costs big $$$$.
I was bummed that the Event wasn't going to be on so I caught it in HD last night on Cox's My Primetime On Demand.

I don't have COX. I did have my DVR recording cut off about a minute early due to the late start too. Thought about D/Ling by torrent, but it's not all that great a show.
After further research, it seems none of the local stations show their syndicated programming in HD. I don't know if the others can delay programming and maintain the HD or not. So what if it is expensive to upgrade to HD equipment. That's the business they are in. Get up to date!! The problem, of course, is no competition. You can say the local stations compete with each other, but really only for news. If you want network programming, you have to tune to their affiliate. I guess that may be changing with Cox on Demand and Hulu and the like.
Oops. correction: KWCH seems to show syndicated programming in HD: Dr. Phil, Oprah, and The Talk.

stevea20 12-08-10, 07:11 PM I received a letter in the mail today from Cox.
The letter said that starting tomorrow, December 9th, there will be some channel changes and channel additions.
National Geographic will move from channel 111 (2111 HD) to channel 75 (2075 HD). This will no long require Advanced TV and the Bonus Pak.
These HD channels will be added:
-- 2002 (The Weather Channel HD),
-- 2015 (Univision HD)
-- 2260 (CBS College Sports HD).
On December 30th, Hallmark Channel will move to channel 217 (2217 HD) and will required the Cox Advanced TV Variety Pak. Turner Classic Movies will move from channel 65 to channel 54 after Hallmark moves.
Pay-Per-View Preview duplicate channels 197 and 299 will be removed. Pay-Per-View Previews can be seen on channel 700.

moreinc 12-15-10, 10:30 AM Hi guys. It's been awhile since I've been on here.
I'm sick of paying so much for TV I don't watch - and I'm thinking about cancelling Cox and just going with OTA. A few questions for those of you who don't have cable or satellite:
1) Can I still use the existing cable lines to get all the digital OTA stations (networks, etc.) so that I can still watch football on Sundays (essentially all the TV I watch these days)? Or do I need to have an actual antenna?
2) Is there a location to quickly and easily find out what the most recent list of OTA TV stations are - and what channels they reside at?
3) Are there any considerations I should be aware of - or info that will make it easiest to get the best experience from my move to ditch pay tv?
Thanks.

As to considerations, you'll want to make sure your antenna is capable of both VHF and UHF. KPTS and KSCW are currently only available on VHF, while KAKE is on both VHF and UHF. The other stations are on UHF only.
If it doesn't look like an antenna, it's probably not a good antenna.

Jeff747 01-04-11, 04:05 AM Speaking of K28JB, are stilling airing TBN or have they changed to Daystar since Word Of God Fellowship is taking over the channel?
K28JB has a permit to go digital on channel 28 at 15 kw and move to one of the towers at the Colwich antenna farm, so I imagine TBN will go off and Daystar will come on at that time, if Daystar doesn't do multicast on this station.

What I'm wondering now is given they can air all this syndicated programming in HD without any problems, can they also now record NBC shows as they come in via satellite and play them back in HD at a later time, or are we still stuck with the crappy SD versions of these NBC shows?:p
Sure hope it happens in HD!!
Update: After checking out the DVR recording from early Thursday morning and seeing a widescreen HD Law and Order:SVU, I can say for sure that KSNW does have the ability to air tape delayed NBC network programs in HD. Yeah!!

Daystar doesn't have any multicast like TBN, and that's why I was a little disappointed to hear that TBN won't be able to air their digital channels such The Church Channel, JCTV,etc. once Daystar takes over.
Looks like KGPT-49.1 is getting another Classic TV competitor, according to their Facebook page KCTU has added ME-TV to 43.2. Seems like these LPTV stations in Wichita are stepping up their game as far as adding new channels such ME-TV, This TV which is on 43.1 & RTV on KGPT 49.1. I would expect better from the full power stations in that market as far as adding programming on their subchannels.

Are you really wanting full power stations to add more sub channels? you must not care about picture quality. You also must not have an HDTV, because if you did you would see the impact that channel 12's weather sub channel has on its main HD feed. Channel 12 has the worst HD picture quality (pixelating) of all the channels I receive OTA (KPTS is probably worse with its two sub channels, but I rarely watch it).

I like watching high definition programming, but I was talking about full-power stations because of a wide coverage area (depending on RF location), as well as satisfying those who can't live without their cable TV (must-carry). I actually do enjoy subchannels because most of these channels remind me of 80s/90s cable (great programming, running on a fixed schedule, etc.) And yes, I do have an HDTV (as well as an SDTV); it's a smaller size so that digital artifacts won't appear present from a distance.
Finally, I live in the Dallas area, but I like to check out other TV markets to see what's up with their channels.

Actually, I don't live in Wichita, I just like to check out other TV markets myself to see what's going on. I do have a HDTV as well (it's mainly hooked up to cable instead of OTA). I thought Ch. 12 would've had a better HD picture with an addition to the weather sub channel it has. I'm just wondering how much bandwith can a station use so that way the main channel can have a clear HD picture without it's subchannel affecting the picture so it won't pixelate.

What do you use them with?
Do you get all channels?
Do channels come and go?
Do you get to use any of the on demand stuff?

Thanks for the reply (again)
I thought Cox here in Wichita was using or was planning on using SDV which meant one way devices were not going to be compatible. I'd have to invest in some hardware that will be rendered useless if Cox makes that jump.

There was talk of Cox going to SDV a few years ago but I haven't heard anything for a long time. If they do go to SDV, they will be required to supply you with a Tuning Adapter so you will still be able to use your cable cards.
quicksilver 06-17-11, 02:54 PM Question HD quality on Cox vs. Direct tv...
I made the switch to ATT's UVSERSE a couple of weeks back and noticed IMMEDIATELY they were compressing the hell out of their HD. Called and cancelled a week later and went back to Cox. Now I'm getting the itch for Direct TV. Can anyone comment on Direct TV's PQ vs. Cox? I have absolutely no problem with Cox's PQ it's fantastic, just getting a tad bit expensive....
Oh, and what about signal loss in bad weather?
Thanks guys.

I used to have Direct TV, but never with HD. Signal loss in bad weather was common. Heavy rain was the biggest problem, however in winter, ice and snow buildup on the dish would kill the signal as well.
ilrosewood 06-20-11, 01:40 PM On Friday my inlaws got the whole home DVR system. This is the internet so let's focus on the negatives first.
The in home install was a rip off. There was no cable ran (and he wouldn't wire up additional rooms). I hooked up the boxes to the TV as I didn't want him messing with my hard work (and all we had to do was unplug the old boxes and plug the new ones in). To top it off the installer knew nothing of the system. Even if I do get this I won't until I can do a self install.
You can't pause live TV on the secondary boxes. I realize now that they never say you can but they sure do hint at it. If you want to pause you have to start recording and then go to the recording. Bleh.
I was so hoping that we would see an interface improvement and we really didn't. This java based Cisco system is just as slow in responding as the old Motorolla boxes.
Just like the old motorolla boxes, these boxes have neutered connections. There are hookups for USB and other such fun stuff but they are all disabled.
The clock on the front is absolutely worthless. A small thing (no really, it is small) but in their main room this was the main clock! Oh well.
The new UI isn't bad but it isn't good. All and all I'd call it a wash compared to the old UI. Some of the fonts are smaller and some are bigger but thus you get less information on screen. When we have great 8ft UI examples out there you would think the Cable companies could get their act together here. At least it doesn't have advertisements in the guide!
But there is some good
At least you can watch / set recordings on the other boxes. It isn't as nice as I would have wanted but better than nothing.
The boxes don't put off near the same amount of heat.
So when I get cable again in the fall I will probably be looking at some of the alternatives that are popping up out there instead of going with this limited and expensive route.

My biggest frustration (from a usability standpoint, stability is a whole new animal, that and the install fee.) is the fact that side by side, my new "Trio" WIDESCREEN guide shows the EXACT SAME amount of information as my old Fullscren guide. They took zero advantage of the added screen real estate, and just moved stuff around. Can you not show me an extra hour of programing and push the Program info to the top like it used to be?
Currently all of the Boxes in my house have no guide data, makes watching TV a PITA, and Cox, like always, has no answers for me.
KAKE-TV is making the transition to HD. Here is the link:

quicksilver 07-16-11, 02:01 PM So I decided to go with Direct TV. So far so good. I'd recommend to anyone wanting to save money from Cox, plus there whole home DVR software is light yrs ahead of Cox at the moment. Pic quality slightly worse than Cox but 10x better than ATT. If you care about your HDTV's diet stay far far away from ATT.
Now if only Direct TV would get AMC-HD in time for Walking Dead season 2....
As of Sunday (July 17th), KAKE News is now in HD and they changed their moniker from KAKE 10 to KAKEland....

ilrosewood 07-26-11, 10:01 AM I ditched the box and between now and when my network tuner gets in I'm just using ClearQAM. Like everyone else my TV found dozens of non channel channels.
Is there a current list of the Cox ClearQAM chans?

Ok, this is a moot point because all of my ClearQAM chans are gone this morning. I just need to go into a cox store and cut the cable completely.
mgsports 07-31-11, 05:49 PM But even KMCI won't add The Cool TV as a digital Sub Channel and the station is in KU hometown and I guess KOMU would add it to replace Universal Sports Network.
golfluvr13 08-14-11, 09:49 AM I recently moved from Kansas City to Garden City. I have Directv and was told I would get local channels in HD out here however that is not the case. Any recommendations for best antenna to hook up out here to get ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC in HD? Thanks!
Trip in VA 08-14-11, 09:55 AM Well, in Garden City you are not going to get FOX over the air because there is no FOX transmitter in the area, so far as I know.
For the rest, you will need a low-VHF and high-VHF antenna, probably a roof antenna, aimed probably to your southeast. I'm not sure if the CS600 is a large enough antenna to get CBS reliably, though I would think that it should be.

RJL1965 08-14-11, 10:35 AM Well, it looks like they've made the final move from SD 16x9 to HD.
Not entirely true at that point (or even right now). Only the weather segments of KSN's newscasts are in HD while the rest (including the studio newsdesk shots) are still in 16x9 SD.
golfluvr13 08-14-11, 11:59 AM Thank you Trip! Appreciate the help.

Take a look at tvfool.com. They offer a map that allows you to plug in your address and view coverage of OTA signals in your area.

That's going to be tough probably. Think big, think high I would guess. Maybe a rotator. Check out AntennaWeb.org,

ilrosewood 11-29-11, 11:53 PM Has anyone ever used cable card in addition to a whole home DVR setup w/ Cox in Wichita?
None of the SD channels are being picked up and a lot of HD channels (basically anything not local) is showing as not having a subscription.
This week Cox Kansas added 4 new HD channels...
HLN (Headline News - 2026)
TruTV (2064; Was on temporarily this year for the NCAA Tournament)
TCM (Turner Classic Movies - 2054)
OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network - 2051)
jeffdb27 04-10-12, 11:27 AM DISH Network added the HD feed of KSCW on March 28th
Trip in VA 04-13-12, 06:59 PM Hola, folks.
I'm in town this evening, having spent the day with KGPT/KSMI getting new equipment set up. For those who receive KSMI, you will now find FGO on 51-5 and Jewelry TV on 51-6.
