Does anyone know what the quality of the OTA reception will be living in Lewiston NY. I am thinking of switching to Direct TV giving all the additional channels I can get for the same price. Some web sites have said that the signals from the local HD OTA channels are B channels. Will I get good reception from here.

Any suggestions for what antenna I should use? Thanks.

Any other TiVo S3 owners not getting any guide data on the 3 new HD channels? I only get "Regular Schedule" for UHD, AETVHD, and MTVHD... I've forced download numerous times and still no guide data.

DTV stations that program a radar channel are now obligated to interrupt it to crawl EAS activations including audio message (which requires investing in additional equipment) and also must air 3 hours of children's programming per week either on the radar or some other channel, which besides requiring additional equipment (or finding "shelf-space" elsewhere to meet the 3-hour minimum) might also require increasing radar channels' bitrate, an additional penalty! Ok, so if they don't have a "radar" channel, they don't have to do the EAS or childrens programming deal? In the grand scheme of things since they already have the 'device' on their 'main' channel, will one more set them back that much?? Does anyone know what the quality of the OTA reception will be living in Lewiston NY. Fantastic (from Ontario at least).

I'm new to this forum and have read most of the posts, but I still have some questions on selecting an antenna for my new samsung 42" I'm located near Delaware - Amherst street's have an elevation of about 650' to the top of a mast with a roter. With a clear line of sight in every direction. The 3 closest HD towers are 6.5 miles with 4 at about 25 miles. I would also like to pick up Toronto. Will a long range yagi antenna be too strong for the close stations. If so can you step the signal down or should I consider a 8 bow tie antenna. I'm also concerned about multipath reception. Thank You in advance

Will a long range yagi antenna be too strong for the close stations. Don't put yourself closer to G.I. than necessary. Your around 6+ miles. Except for 'rabbit ears' (pardon the expression) most antennas are overkill for those four xmitters. Ch 20 (CBC) should be ok, but forget about ch 40 (CFTO). Way too weak.

Your in the same boat as I am.

My problem was 17/43 was fixed when I got home. And they even fixed 25 (back to CSPAN) and 27 (it was added as blank, but now it's SNY which is what they changed CSPAN to). I didn't even have to tell them about those problems!

First 7-2 now 4-2 ??

Weather radar is gone altogether- and7-2 is there w/ signal- no pic???

I like watching 7-2? Who decides what is considered "childrens programming", anyway? I would think that Andy Griffith would qualify. Or maybe Leave it to Beaver?

I just don't understand... and I am very dissapointed to have lost two OTA signals. What's going to happen to NBC weather PLUS (2-2)? Are they in the same situation as these other channels?

I'm sure WKBW doesn't like it either as it was a 'cash cow' for them leasing space for the other channel at very little additional cost. And a larger loss is for WNGS...............

But, I still don't get the connection for all of this in spite of what was posted eariler. So buy the interface device for EAS, big deal.................

Well,,, What do you want to pay? You have DirecTv, Dish, Timewarner and they all cost $$$. Or you can get an outdoor antenna like the CM4228 and after the one time investment get a decent amount of staions OTA for free! I have this setup w/ a rotor and get 2,4,7,17,23,26,29,49 all digital for nothing. I still use basic lifeline cable- ($7/month) since I have TW for internet.

Over a regular analog SD channel it does, but if you compare it with that NBC football game for example, you would of seen the difference. At first, it looks good, especially hockey; high contrast material, but after you look at it for awhile you will see the difference.

Look at the closeups of anyones face. They will have that 'clay' look to them.

Rich,!!! Your killing me here with you saying C band is dead. I know that it looks like it is but I believe there is still a pulse. With all the rest of the anolog chanels now going digital they are being brought back for us subsribers to NPS. We are losing ESPN's network of chanels because of it's parent company ( Disney ) not liking the 4DTV receiver.

I just had another pole put in the groung so that I can move my big dish to the new pole. 14 years with the original pole and all the bad weather we have had this fall with the extreme winds have loosened up the pole so we had to sink a new one. We'll make the move in a couple of days. Anyway I still have a great package from my provider because they are really working hard to keep us in the game with programing. I pray to God that I will never have to go to the little dish. Picture quality just isn't there like it is on the big dish and cost is still a better deal for me with the large dish. Call me a die hard, but there is still a fair amount of us out there and just maybe we'll get a break from the Gods of satellite tv.

Well lets just say this! C-band is not dead yet! However if mike Schroeder at NPS cannot make enough $$$ from the dwindling amount of c-band subscribers he will relinquish the company. The only real provider of digital services to c-band is NPS. I have been an NPS dealer for 20 years , I can tell you that the number of people working in the call center has dropped almost 90% in 7 years!! That to me looks shocking! they use to have a dealer coordinator for 10 area in the usa, now they only have one to handel everything Susie Thomas. NPS is paying alot of bucks to transition signals to digital uplinks but they will not continue if the money feeding them keep dwindling. The news about ESPN leaving was not a shock. They are overpriced money grubbers anyhow. They could care less about Analog or Digital service to big dish users. Thats why NPS cannot get a contract with them. They (NPS) is trying to buy the signal thru another method but its VERY costly and its not currently available to the Uplink NPS uses. All that in mind Dont sink too much into the c-band if ya dont have to.

I live in Scio near Wellsville, NY. My elevation is 2215 ft, with the antenna on the roof. From what I have researched, I have either a CM3018 or 3019 antenna. They are rated for 40-45 miles UHF. I just purchased a Samsung 5687 DLP TV. It does not have physical signal strength numbers. But instead a graph like a cell phone. Channel 7-1 comes in at 3 out of 8 bars I think. With a cheap radio shack preamp I still get 3 out of whatever bars. I am looking at the 91xg and C7777 preamp at this time, but have not ordered anything yet. As for the surroundings, the house sits almost at the summit of a hill with one row of trees around it in a large open field. Of course they are positioned right in the direction of the transmitters about 200 yards away. Past that you can see 2 towns over before the next hill.
kylinbil: If your considering a 4228 or a yagi type i have them in stock all the time here in lockport as well as preamps from winegard/Ch MAster and TDP. The shipping on those antennas can be high as the boxes go ups os rate 3 If your interested feel free to give me a call

Not HD?? Sorry to disapoint you but that is about as High Definition as your going to see a hockey game. Some of the TSN-HD broadcasts may be a bit sharper, but in general, thats HD hockey. Don't know what you were expecting, but i thought it looked decent too.

Bruce, most of the time, it was in HD. The wide-view images (press box view) were brought to you by HD cameras. However, the near-ice images were NOT HD cameras, and it was painfully obvious. I think at one point, the ACC was equipped with all HD cameras, but they may have relocated some to the western provinces for the second game (Vancouver, Calgary), since those have also looked good lately and are shown in native 16x9.

Well I have seen hockey games in on CFTO and CBC other times and it was very noticeable to me that this wasn't HD. Even using that NBC football game as the example. Looking at crowd shots was very easy to tell. Muddy looking clay faces. I think at one point, the ACC was equipped with all HD cameras, but they may have relocated some to the western provinces for the second game (Vancouver, Calgary), since those have also looked good lately and are shown in native 16x9. Then they were using SD cameras in 16x9 through a HD path (other than the 4x3 single chip CCD cameras).

one of my views is that CBC from Toronto has one of the best lookinh HD signals out there. With that said some of they're programming isnt always done in Hd. There have been lots of posts on threads elsewhere concurrent with the New Year that many DTV stations have dropped weather and other 2nd channels due to newly imposed FCC requirements for EAS activations and children's programming. Thus stations found it cheaper to drop unprofitable channels rather than obtain and install additional equipment or programming.

First we're having DTV forced on us, now they make it harder to take advantage of the technology. Overpaid paranoid idiots @ the fcc.

So you make the effort to post a long message about all the contact information you have at WUTV, refuse to share it and then, can't take the effort to make a 10 second phone call or drop an email to tell them that they have the game on in SD?

As opposed to not calling at all and getting no response?

I wasn't asking for the number or email address, only stating that the effort to post that he had it and post again that he didn't care about the game took more time than dropping an email to the Engineer and saying "What the F***?"

If part of an engineers job is to be sure that the network's signal is being transmitted properly, and he fails to do so, he should lose his job. That is my opinion, that is how I feel.
This was the national championship game, not a repeat of House, people had folks over for parties, bars advertised the game being on in HD and WUTV's engineer "forgets" to flip some switch. The most pathetic part is, there is NO WAY to contact WUTV to have them correct the problem.

why are you all so angry? I should never had made that post in the first place. The only reason i did is the alert everything that RECEIVING an email from the Engineer will give you the contact information your looking for.

if you ask him a quesiton over email, and he responds, then he is rightfully giving you his contact information. That it how this should be done. Not by asking someone like me, who doesn't even know anything about this football game that your talking about, to email him to ask him about something i didn't even witness

Some news...

I just got off the phone with Don Stewart (the WNYO/WUTV head engineer). He really seems like a great guy and was happy to talk to me about what happened. He is sincerely conerned about the quality of their signal and took last nights issue personally. Apparently WUTV is completely automated when it comes to switching between the feeds. There is no 'man flipping a switch'. He's still looking into what happened, but it's likely that the automated equipment failed to switch to the correct feed and just passed through the SD feed. There is an operator who is supposed to monitor the signal but for some reason he did not notice or was unable to correct the situation. Don wasn't watching the game and didn't find out about the situation until this morning.

Like I said, he's personally upset about what happend and gave me his cell phone number in case of any future hiccups. I don't watch FOX all that much, so I can't speak to this, but he did say that this was their first big debacle with the HD feed and they've had a great track record prior to this. He promised that this won't happen again and that he'll figure out what exactly happened with the automated equipment (if that was the cause) and take steps to ensure that the problem never reoccurs.

One of the first things out of his mouth was asking if I was one of those 'AVS forum guys'... :) He's definately aware of and reads this threads so if you have anything to say then I'm sure he'll read it... Be nice though, he's a stand-up guy and is as upset about last night as we are (if that's possible) ;) .

I got a hold of him by calling the WUTV main line (447-3200) and entering his name into the automated phone directory. He'd rather his cell phone not be posted publicly on the internet (which I totally understand) but since I don't watch FOX all that much if someone else would like it for any possible future emergency then send me a PM.

I still think we should compile a list of all the major Buffalo networks contacts for these types of situations. In my experience (between all networks) it seems to happen several times a month that a show is being transmitted in SD when it should be in HD and it would be great to have someone to nudge so they could take a look at the situation. Does anyone have contacts at other networks?

Hello,
I recently purchased a Sharp Aquos 46" LCD and I'm trying to understand what I should be getting over the air, regarding digital channels in the Buffalo, NY area (I live in Amherst). I've checked antenna web, and remotecentral and I just don't think what I'm seeing matches these lists well, obviously I'm doing something wrong. It appears my channels are in different places, or just non-existant.

Could anyone just give a quick list of what should be available, channel number, network and station?
I'm confused. For example, some reason, I can't seem to find FOX, and Time Warner doesn't seem to have the HD channel of FOX on digital cable either, and I LOVE house! So I have been watching it in SD *sigh*

I'm not sure what you guys are thinking, but so far my impression of HD "sucks", since most of the programming on it ends up being SD feeds, even sports events I'm seeing are mostly in SD, even on the HD channels.

Thanks.

jjamulla... You'll need to provide us with a little more information... what kind of OTA antenna are you using? Are you running it straight to the TV or are you using another box (such as a TiVo) to recieve?

With proper setup you should be able to recieve all of the major networks in HD. I'm in Lancaster and I'm able to receive Fox HD strongly with just an cheap indor 'silver sensor' type antenna. That's the only channel I use the antenna for since I get all the other HD's on TW cable.

Regarding "HD Sucks", I have to strongly disagree. My wife and I watch a fair amount of TV and I'd say that 80-90% of it is in HD. Very nearly all of the major network primetime series are in HD with the exception of reality shows. I don't watch a ton of sports, but most major games are available in HD.

cwoody222

I agree with EskimoPie.

I also use a cheap indoor Silver Sensor. It took a bit of experimenting to get the proper positioning but now I get 2, 4, 7, 23, 29 and 43 (WNED) all perfectly. There's an occassional outage but I can think of ONE show this whole season that was totally hosed when I lost signal (SNL on ch2 when Hugh Laurie hosted).

I also don't watch sports but pretty much every one of my shows except reality shows on network TV is in HD. I use a Series3 TiVo and the vast majority of my network seasons passes are made on local digital OTA stations. Only a small handful (Simpsons, Amazing Race, a few others) I record off of cable.

(of course I'm just talking networks... of course things like FX and Comedy Central, etc aren't in HD yet)

(of course I'm just talking networks... of course things like FX and Comedy Central, etc aren't in HD yet)

Found this thread a week ago. I just received my first HD TV yesterday. Samsung HSL5687 and I am very pleased with this tv so far. The picture, after changing the factory settings are amazing. I am a TW HD customer, but just for the fun of it I hooked up a set of rabbit ears to the the TV last night and I was amazed to see all the HD programming it received OA, off this $15 dollar antenna. My question is this, will a better antenna make any difference? Compared to the HD TW sattions the OA picute was a tad better and FOX was as good as any HD station I could get. Before I invest more money in a better antenna and wiring hassles, should I just saty with this? I am in Clarence and the TV is in the basement.
Thanks.

Anyone else already noticing changes in TW's clear qam stations? I was getting universal hd and they've shut that off apparently. Just as I suspected -they'll probably shut off A&E tonight too for Soprano's - Guess I'll just give up on Qam -it's just not reliable. TW seems to make changes to channels as they wish! Oh well there's still OTA.
Yes, I lost all my TW QAM chans(ABC,CBS ,NBC,PBS, )as well. Wonder if they will come back

You may get MORE channels but you won't get better quality. With digital either you get it or you don't. However, your signal strength (which can improve reliability) may get better with a different antenna.

What channels and signal strength did you get with your rabbit ears? What channels do you need/want to get? If you already get HD cable maybe all you need is FOX (which you said you get).

But - it can't hurt to spend $30 or so on a Zenith Silver Sensor (try Amazon.com, I've never seen one locally... don't fall for the similar Terk models at Circuit City) to experiment a bit.

Legally the locals have to be offered. Removing them was probably a mistake.

Unless maybe they didn't encrypt them but instead just moved them and you're looking for them in their old location. They can (and will) move them whenever and wherever they want.

Since I got my HR10-250 in September, I've always had a hard time getting Fox to come in on it, but since last week it's been coming in almost rock solid. Did WUTV make any changes to it's transmitter recently that could explain this (like reduce power since I think its 1000 Kw was too much for the HR10's tuners due to my close proximity in Wheatfield). My Sony has always been able to receive it fine.

so far my impression of HD "sucks", since most of the programming on it ends up being SD feeds
If you think HD sucks, then there is obviously something wrong with your setup and you are not receiving HD signals when you think you are. Watching a show in HD instead of SD is like watching color instead of B&W. It's so good, I find myself watching all sorts of crap simply because it's in HD. My wife laughs at me when she catches me doing this.

I will agree that an SD show on an HDTV looks worse than that same SD show on an SDTV.

Not in HD they aren't (AFAIK). At least not 'in the clear'.

For all intents and purposes, if the cable company offers both the analog and digital version of a local station they are not allowed to encrypt the digital counterpart.

(whether that digital channel is HD or SD doesn't matter)

While I don't think it's 100% law yet, it's a bit of a grey area (it got muddied up with "multi-cast must-carry" in June 06 and a vote was tabled) and I believe that cable companies are "playing it safe". Either that, or the local station got the cable company to agree to carry the digital signal (unencrypted) as part of the retransmission consent for their analog station.

I haven't heard of a SINGLE market in which the local digital stations are encrypted.

Here's some info:

I went out on a troubleshoot tonight, customer has a new jvc 37" lcd w/ atsc/qam tuner but he is unable to receive any of the in the clear qam channels. The apartment complex he is in has their own cable system and they rebroadcast the hd feeds 2,4,7,17 on channels 81,82,83,84. I verified that qam channels 81, 82, 83, 84 were being broadcast and had acceptable signal levels. I'm confused

warit

He's probably in the same apartment complex as me. I use Anametrics and they rebroadcast local HD on 81,82,83,84. I don't know how they do it but all the channels are in 8VSB not QAM. I have 2 Samsung tuners and they didn't pick up any of these channels. If do channel scan in air mode (8VSB), it will only go up to channel 60. When I do the scan in cable (STD/HRC/IRC) mode, though it goes up to channel 135, it won't pick up 8VSB signal at all.

When I do the scan using Fusion HDTV card, I am able to pick up 81-84 and all the channels show up as 8VSB. PHD101 is also able to pickup these four channels. I guess a lot of tuners won't be able to pick up 8VSB above ch60. (Why would the manufacturers make the units do that? The cable company should have broadcasted them in QAM in the first place!!)

BTW then channels don't match those on the channel card. Currently they are 23,4,7,29 for 81,82,83,84.

videobruce

I don't know how they do it but all the channels are in 8VSB not QAM. Considering that all sets (with any tuner) have to have 8VSB, not QAM and since this is a MATV system, not a CATV system, 8VSB would be the only true choice. I would bet 8VSB devices are cheaper than QAM anyway. The cable company should have broadcasted them in QAM in the first place!!) See the above, it's a MATV system.

All I found was this: The Report and Order finds that digital television signals must be available to subscribers on a basic service tier. but the terms "basic service tier" could mean basic digital service tier, as in you have to have the basic digital service level as you do for any step up digital service (AFAIK).

Notification could be in probably many various forms. Bill stuffers, commercials during over-night programming, ads in local publications, posting on their website, etc.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a direct notification to the customer.

Regardless. Go check over in the TiVo Series3 (which can do QAM) forums. There hasn't been a single post in 4 months from someone that wasn't able to get the local HD stations via unencrypted QAM if their cable company offered that local station on HD for pay.

The range of people's cable service levels varies and doesn't matter... from the most basic to the most expensive. All cable companies across the entire country.

Of course, TiVo has no guide data for these channels so tuning them without a CableCARD is fairly pointless on a DVR but still, they were able to be found EVERY time.

(with me being the notable exception still for reasons unknown ;) )

You're right. I just did a rescan. The tuners do go up to ch69 in "AIR" mode not ch60. I must have remembered it incorrectly.

So I have 8VSB signal coming in through channel 80+. All tuners will go up to only ch69 in "AIR" mode. If you do a scan in "CABLE" mode, it'd go upto ch135 while some tuners are able to pick up 8VSB in this mode, and some aren't.

In this situation, if somebody is buying a new tuner/TV how would (s)he know that the TV will be able to pickup 8VSB in ch80+ when scanning in CABLE mode. In the specs it usually just says ATSC / QAM64 QAM256 (up to ch135).

I did some investagating of this "Anametrics" outfit and came across this review dated June of last year; Exceptionally poor service. Snowy television and Broadband is out for hours EVERY day.
Stay away from this company. When Adelphia had a 2 week waiting period for installation, we decided to go with Anametrics, even though we had heard their service was bad. They gave us a one month "trial" (free) cable TV and Broadband service. VERY POOR SERVICE. Half of the TV stations were "snowy", and many we didn't even get. Online TV guide on yahoo was never correct. Broadband service was terrible. Lost internet and our Vonage every day, sometimes up to 4+ hours. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NEGLIGIBLE. Some woman always answers (don't know her name, don't want to), and starts arguing with you when you state you are having problems with your service, denying there are any problems at their end. Also, when we called to cancel service with them, this same woman started arguing with us when we notified them we were cancelling. She called back and said that the Adelphia installer stole $200 worth of their equipment outside, and that they were billing us. Can't wait for that invoice LOL From here;

It seems to be that way. Though their broadband service has been improved a bit lately (more stable, less disconnected) but it still slow. I ran my bandwidth test almost every other day. On a really good day their speed is approx 3Mbit/s but on the average I only get 0.5 - 1.5 Mbit/sec. I guess it depends on how many people are using / sharing the bandwidth at that time. When I was with Adelphia (before they were taken over by TW), my speed was rock solid at 3 - 4 Mbit/s all the time. When I called customer service, all she said is that "we are faster than adelphia" and "there is not problem on our side". I guess the only reason I stick with them is that their service is half price of TW.

On the CATV side, it's not that bad. The only problem I have now is that some of my HD tuners don't work with their HD feed (8VSB on Ch80+) so I just lose the luxury of being able to record the shows through my 2nd tuner. Not a big deal. :)

Animetrics has a headend in the north Buffalo that they provide they're digiatal satellite channels and the Off air stuff is done using off air antennas for both analog and digital. Their are also other companies such as myself that have Private cable systems installed in apartments locally. Typiclly we receive the cable channels from Either HITs DISH or Directv. The off air stuff is on a tower at the facility. PPv is done with fiber and or other means and Internet is setup with alot of VOIP and fiber. We normally put the digital services out as part of the basic line in a facility ecept premiums which we normally use Blonder tongue QAM.

Yep, I'm blaming ice.

I lost their signal completely around 10:30pm Monday while recording the Golden Globes. During Letterman that night, WIVB was kinda spotty too.

I had to fiddle around with my antenna (an indoor Silver Sensor) to get my signal(s) back last night. But my signal strength is still low on a few (low 60s) so I'm scared they're going to go back out during some important show.

But as I said, I'm just blaming weather/ice and am not too worried.

anywho...

Anyone ever have any luck with getting waivers for locals thru D*?

I can get just about everything with two, two-bay Eagle Aspen antennas and a pre-amp on the roof, but I can't get NBC / wgrz no matter what I do. I've tried the jointenna/filter stuff, etc.

So just for kicks I asked for the waivers to be requested. I'm not expecting much, but wondering if anyone has had any luck (since D* hasn't released MPEG4 w/ Buffalo HD locals yet).

Besides NFL Network and ESPN U what channels have been removed? As far as encrypted, if that means going digital, that's a good thing. Analog cable should not exist in 2007. I believe TW WNY has also added channels since taking over Adelphia, including 3 new HD channels. You guys also have Starz HD, Cinemax HD and ESPN 2 HD which we do not.

Time Warner Cable is a great company, after over 5 years with Dish, 2 years with DirecTV. TW Cable is a breath of fresh air. All I would like from them is 29 in HD, ESPN 2 HD and Digital Phone in my area, and then I’d be 110% satisfied.

Steve : how are you getting 15Mb/s download with the broadband? I live in Cheektowaga & am lucky to 3Mb/s download speeds.

Steve Mehs

In eastern Erie Country (Akron, Alden, Marilla) we were never an Adelphia area. We’re a part of the Time Warner Rochester franchise. In December, in Rochester, Road Runner was increased to 10Mb (was 7Mb) and Road Runner Premium was increased to 15Mb (was 8Mb). I love the new speeds, and what's funny is this is not an attempt to compete with Fios as Verizon has no presence in the Rochester area. Frontier is the telco.

I have to agree with Steve about TW compared to Dish. I switched in Dec. 2005, after Dish tried to sell me an outdated 921 to replace my 811. I pointed out that I knew they would be changing to MPEG4 the following Feb., to which the reply was "When would you like to cancel?" The standard cable channels on Dish were so badly compressed that they were hardly watchable. They may have more HD than cable, but much of their content is hardly what I would call compelling, no matter what Charlie says. I have been pleased for the most part with the SA8300, much more reliable and user friendly than Dish equipment. I'm willing to give TW a few months to get their act together-it has to be a daunting task to take over a bankrupt company and assume all it's liabilities. However, if Verizon FIOS TV becomes available, all bets are off.

Time Warner hasn't "removed" HD Net, TMC or Encore. They simply moved a bunch of channels to a paid tier. No cable or satellite provider includes HD or movie channels such as TMC as basic services. Adelphia was just sloppy.

If you look at TW's website lineup they now make a distinction between "free" HD and "paid" HD. Although that doesn't seem to match up with what they don't encrypt on their QAM stations.

I suspect "free" means you still need their digital box to get them but not an HD package, not that they're broadcast unencrypted QAM.

(FYI: The free ones listed are HD locals, ESPN/2, TNT, A&E, Disc and MTV-HD)

TW has increased the HD and VOD offerings WAY over what Adelphia offered. And their rate specials are quite competitive now. (12/mo promo deals)

Their bad press is all about 3 minor issues: a rate hike (which is in line with other markets), NFL Network (a single channel which they still offer if you want it) and the Sinclair dispute (which affected zero programming).

Why wouldn't going digital be a good thing? I say remove analog completely and force everyone to go digital. Better picture quality, better sound quality, more content can be stored on DVRs. What’s the problem? In the Rochester division were doing ADS, that’s a band-aid not a solution to the problem. Being a high-end video guy, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want this to happen as well. Removing analog frees up a large amount of bandwidth that can be used to add more HD and relieve compression on SD channels systemwide.

I welcome the addition of MHD, A&E HD at this time sucks though. Here in order to get any of the movie channels you needed digital cable for probably 3 years now. It's progress.

I don't know what's going on in the Buffalo division, but in Rochester there have been no cut backs, tech support is based out of Mt Hope Ave in Rochester off I490, don't need to contact much anyways since the service is perfect. TW is the #1 TV provider and the #1 broadband provider in the area and at current trends will soon be the #1 phone provider of Rochester as well. In this division TW is growing especially when it comes to Business Class Services.

cwoody222
01-21-07, 07:28 PM
Well, the only downside of removing analog COMPLETELY is forcing people to have STBs on every TV. At least TV's without QAM converters which is the VAST majority of TV's out there.

While I hate the picture quality, I would much rather have the ability to plug a coax into any TV or DVR or VCR that I want.

However, I realize digital IS the future and eventually TVs will all have to be able to decode those digital signals.

Other than that, I agree with everything else you said.

FUCCO - see videobruce's statement about this a few posts up.

It wasn't up to TW to just add WUTV... WUTV's parent company and Time Warner were fighting over retransmission rights and payments. They supposedly just reached a deal which, bruce heard, MAY include HD appearing on cable now.

I wouldn't hold your breath for VerizonTV here... AFAIK they haven't even petitioned the local government(s) to offer service in this area yet.

cwoody222
01-22-07, 02:46 PM
I was just thinking about those "free" HD channels I saw listed in Time Warner's cable lineup.

I wonder if that was part of the Sinclair agreement? Obviously they still require you to purchase a HD STB to be able to tune the station to the correct number but I wonder if moving the locals outside of the HD "package" got Sinclair to cave on some of their payment requests.

That way Sinclair's still happy because more cable users see their HD content without having to pay the cable company for a "local HD package".

I had a long, in person conversation with a Verizon DSL tech and he reports the Main St. (Buffalo) CO will be wired for FiOS this year. I asked him about FiOS television and he reports about issues with how franchises are set up for each local community. Verizon wants a state wide policy that would apply to all towns & cities, doing away with local franchises. That is the holdup.

cwoody222
01-22-07, 06:27 PM
Oh, that's cool news about the city being FiOS wired.

Yea, the local franchise thing SLOOOOOOOWS down the process. And that happens everywhere, not just here.

Verizon's smart to be spending their time to get state-wide approvals... but that's a long, legal process.

Time Warner, Sinclair OK deal on Fox transmissions

http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20070123/1048500.asp

" In addition, Time Warner's Western New York system will add Fox's high-definition signals to its high-def tier, probably in about a month, he said. The deal also preserves Time Warner's retransmission rights for "My TV" affiliate WNYO-TV Channel 49."

EDIT: there's also this - " Locally, Time Warner agreed to make room on its local channel lineup for new business and reality-TV channels from Fox, probably by March 31, he said."

Which is weird since TW already has Fox Reality on digital cable.

Quick question. I live in Clarence and pick up all Buffalo HD channels perfectly OTA with a $30 antenna. I'm interested in how to get CBC-HD from Toronto, for obviously Hockey Night in Canada. Has anyone had any luck doing this without a big ugly antenna? I'd like something sleek that the neighbors won't bitch about.

videobruce
01-23-07, 12:21 PM
You could move into Buffalo and you won't have to worry about the neighbors "bitching", or you could get a 4228, install it and tell them it's your right to have an antenna.

What $30 antenna do you have? Where you are 2-0.1 shouldn't be a issue. 40.1 might be tough.

PTS21
01-23-07, 12:43 PM
[Truth be told, I not to crazy about putting up a big antenna either. I heard that you can put the 4228 inside attics and still get nearly all the distance out of it. Anyone have any experience doing that with Toronto-HDs?

I have a basic Phillips antenna (MANT310) I got at Walmart sitting behind my HDTV that works well with all local channels.

I also have the Phillips MANT940 (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5000836) Indoor/Outdoor Antenna (~$45) which I place near the top of my house pointing toward Grand Island, but the thing simply sucks ... even with FOX.

What's strange is that it has a much better signal (80-90) then my the antenna on my living room floor (60-70). However, the feeds constantly drop making it unwatchable.

When will WUTV Fox 29 HD get added to TW Buffalo ? (I hope before or at the same time it's added to TW Rochester)

Any idea why WUHF Fox 31 HD was just added for Rochester? I realize it had nothing to do with the Sinclair deal (that was just timing coincidence). What went down to have it suddenly be added?

The addition of WUHF to the Rochester TW system was a direct result of the Sincliar/TW retrans agreement. It wasn't a coincidence. The agreement was signed Friday, WUHF was added to much of the Rochester system on Saturday morning.
I know that TW in Buffalo is working diligently to get WUTV on their system as quickly as possible.

He won't get WUTV DT, but I will. TW Rochester is the cable company for a good portion of the WNY market. My understanding is that TW subscibers in Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans counties will get WUTV, not both as it is with the analog signals now. I don't think the significantly viewed rules apply to the HD signal. The same thing holds true east of Rochester with WSYT from Syracuse. This is all defined by DMA only.

Also, -8db what? m, mV, uV?

Nice going, TW!

Here's the deal, as far as I know. Parts of the Buffalo DMA, notably in Orleans and Genesee counties are actually fed from head ends that are part of the Rochester system. So those systems are the ones that WUTV will show up on 1006. Niagara, Erie and the other counties actually closer to Bufalo are fed by head ends that are part of the Buffalo system, and will see WUTV on 706. The Rochester system, as I'm sure you have noticed by the addition of WUHF almost immediately after the Sinclair/TW announcment was made, is a bit ahead of the curve on this. TW Buffalo, is working diligently to get WUTV and WNYO on all the systems that it covers. I don't think it's going to take very long. I can't really say for sure though when it will happen, but it's being worked on now.

wnyfox,

Do you know anything about WUTV-HD being added to Directv anytime soon? This week a D* rep said the Buffalo MPEG-4 HD locals were still scheduled to be added in January. They couldn't tell me which channels would be included. Is WUTV-HD ready to go with Directv? Appreciate the update.

I'm not sure what's going on with DirecTV these days. There really isn't anything WUTV has to do to get ready. Like the analog signal, I imagine they would pick up WUTV-DT off the air and fiber it back to their uplink facility.

Wnyfox, thanks for the info. Any word if/when TW STNY franchise will see WUTV DT? Where I work we have depot in Jamestown and one of the guys down there just got an HDTV for Christmas and can't get anything OTA. Thanks

If the Southern Tier TW system is part of the Buffalo DMA, which I think it is, they should be getting WUTV's HD signal. Are the other Buffalo stations' HD signal carried on that system?

WNLO is still hosed. My recording of Everybody Hates Chris from last Monday had no audio at all and was in SD. So I recorded the rerun tonight. It's in HD but the audio is off by 3-4 seconds. It's not watchable at all. Good thing I recorded it off their analog station too. Guess that's what I'll have to do tomorrow too.

Doesn't anyone who works there actually WATCH their own station in HD?!

The press release I posted is for the TW Rochester franchise not TW WNY. And it’s 100% true. My cable system is totally different than yours, two separate franchises. WUTV-DT is live here, I've been watching it since 7:00, channel 1006. No reason to be mad at your TW division.

Most people in WNY don't realize that outside of the city of Buffalo, City of Niagara Falls and their suburbs, the vast majority of the area has been served by Time Warner Cable for years, be it TW Rochester (Eastern Erie, Eastern Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming) or TW STNY (Chautauqua, Catt. and most of Allegany). The Western NY area is served by three different TW franchises that are totally separate from each other. I'm in Erie Country, cable co is TW Rochester.

Here's a map of the Rochester area TW coverage.

http://twc.twrochester.com/images/products/map.gif

The STNY division covers a good portion of the south half of the state, from Jamestown past Watkins Glen. Jamestown is part of the Buffalo market, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany TW STNY subs get Buffalo locals in HD, to a point. I know a guy who lives in the middle of nowhere in Allegany County, he gets WKBW-DT from here in Buffalo, but another HD local from Binghamton. But Chautauqua is definitely 100% Buffalo, but they get SV SD locals from Erie.

Dear Mr. Xxxx,

Thanks for taking the time to write us and let us know your concerns about your DIRECTV equipment costs. You are important to us and we certainly want to keep you as a customer.
A service specialist will call you in the next few days to discuss what we can do to meet your needs.

Although I cannot provide you with a definite date as of yet, local channels in the Little Rock area will be available in HD sometime mid-April. Please be advised that this tentative schedule may be subject to change.

Thank you for your patience, and for giving us the chance to respond to your concerns.

What's the problem at WIVB? Cold Case was on at 8 last night and just as it started, they ran the snow warning message across the top of the screen in SD, then they left the whole show in SD! What is so hard about switching to the HD feed? I called them and got through to the newsroom and they said "Oh, we're not watching our station, so we don't know what our broadcast looks like." Are you kidding! I can understand if you want to watch a program on another channel, but wouldn't at least have your own station on at least 1 TV so you can monitor what your transmission looks like? Must just be the Sunday night crew because the only screwups I've ever seen on WIVB has been on Sunday nights. I hope they get the Super Bowl right this Sunday.

Will Bettman dick us w/another blacked out HD broadcast?

Steve Mehs
02-01-07, 02:48 AM
It should be blacked out on HD Net in the Buffalo area since MSG holds the regional rights for Sabres telecast. These are the NHL rules, and the same applies to the NBA and MLB. National broadcasts will always be blacked out if a local or regional feed is available. SD or HD hold no relevance.

There have been a few Sabres games in HD on Versus this year, the season opener was in HD along with two or three other games.

Go to HD Net in your guide, and hit Info. Look to see if you see a circle with a slash through it when you bring up the info, on older Dish receivers that's what would show up for sporting events that were blacked out, or if you have a DVR see if it will let you record the game.

The issue of syndicated programming in HD has been addressed here before. Most local stations (across the country) don't have the necessary space to store these much larger files the days before broadcast.

This will change, in time, but syndicated HD broadcasts are pretty rare right now. (major markets only)

It's a double-edged sword, too, as with not many outlets, not many syndicated shows are offered in HD.

I wouldn't go so far as saying that. Too much compression = motion bur and smearing. I also miss the 1080i images they used to transmit, definitely a bit sharper.

Gotta agree with you, WNED-HD picture quality goes bad whenever any fast motion occurs. Even after the switch to 720p

And on another topic did anyone else lose AEHD, UniversalHD and MTV HD on TW QAM overnight? They were all gone this morning. Also WTBS on 111 disappeared too.

"Jim Toellner, general manager of the NBC affiliate, said Channel 2 “will soon” be able to add a third channel."

"Chris Musial, general manager of WIVB-TV, said Channel 4 could eventually program three so-called sub-channels through the digital spectrum.

The options being explored include starting an extra weather channel and carrying syndicated programming on another entertainment-type channel. “I think it may be a ways away,” said Musial."

WNED-HD can look great and it can look awful.

I wonder how they allocate the bit pool . . . manually or automatic.

I'm told that PBS in Rochester sends it feed to the cable comany by FIBER
and that their HD station on cable is 19 Mbps and that the OTA HD is only
9 Mbps.

How do the Buffalo stations get their signals to the cable companies.

Is it possibly that cable is becoming BETTER than OTA????

Hi Everyone,
I'm brand new to HDTV's; I just got one yesterday and was wondering a few things about getting channels over the air. I live on Shoshone off of Hertel in North Buffalo (14214). I have a small indoor antenna, and I was able to get WUTV, WNED, and WNLO in HD. Unfortunately I could not get anything else. Would an outdoor antenna get me lots of more channels? Is there anyone in the area who installs them, and would it be very expensive? Finally, would it be possible to get CBC in HD from Toronto with an outdoor antenna? I'd love to get Hockey Night in Canada in HD. Thanks!

cwoody222

You'll get more (and possibly CBC) with an outdoor. And yes, there are folks here who install them.

However, you should be able to get all the Buffalo locals (but not CBC) with an indoor one.

I am in Getzville. I can get 4,7,23,29, and 43 in HD with a Radio Shack indoor antenna most of the time. I get 2 some of the time but not a steady signal. Any experience from anyone in Getzville about getting 2 regularly and CBC, CFTO with an indooor or outdoor antenna (details of antenna, please) would be appreciated.

I'm not too far away from you in NT -You will need an outdoor antenna to get CBC with any reliability. I would recommend a channel master 4228 with a rotor. Get one from Rich in Lockport (RW antenna) - that's who put mine up- He did Good work!

I called DirecTV today and upgraded to HD. I also inquired about the DNS channels, and asked to add them to my programming package, but they said that it could take up to 45 days for this take place. Has anyone else had any experience with these channels? Does it really take that long to have them added?
