Adelphia HD question for y'all...

Right now I've got a Dish 811, and I'm not happy at all with the SD quality of most channels, especially the Buffalo locals - highly compressed with tons of pixellation. To make it even more complicated, I have a Replay 5040 which only enhances the digital flaws as it redigitizes the image.

I'm looking at going back to Adelphia, as I found they had a better picture quality on the majority of their analog channels. I am looking, though, at the HD DVR that is now available (the SA 8000HD, I think). I'd like to continue to use my Replay for my normal DVR needs, but it'd be great to have the 8000HD to record HD programming (CSI, Las Vegas, etc). Does anyone know if I can have both the svideo outputs and the component outputs active simultaneously on this box? And if not on this box, can it be done on their HD non-DVR box?

Thanks so much!

Hey has anyone notice that ABC Buffalo has alot of marco-blocking on their HD broadcasts? It seems to happen like every 10-20 secs. Has anybody else noticed this or is this just my receiver? I'm getting a 93% + signal so I shouldn't be seeing macro blocking. Just wondering cause it's really starting to get annoying and I want to enjoy tonight's MNF Hall of Fame game. If it's just my receiver I'll go out and get a new one.

Nope I can't get the WB either. I think they're at real low power right now so I think most people right now are unable to get them.

Is the MNF game being broadcast in HD??? My OTA receiver picks up the game, but it's clearly not in HD. It's cropped and if this is their HD, then this is a bunch of hoopla.

HDKing,

Did you experience alot of marco-blocking and picture break-up? It's weird most of the first quarter was problem free for me and then middle of second quarter and the rest of the game I got all kinds of break-up. Can anyone else confirm signal break-up on their sets too or is this just me? It's getting very very annoying.

ChrisSBU,
I have the 8000HD.
From my limited testing there is no pass thru to the 75ohm, s video outputs.
After recording a program you have a few options: Play (sends to component out), Erase, Block, and Copy to VCR (sends to 75ohm, s video out).
Toss the Replay 5040 and start paying the cable pig.

I tuned into the game for 5 minutes, then I saw John Madden was commentating and promptly turned it off. For 5 minutes the picture looked fine. :)

After they switched the HD on I got some cut in/out. At first I thought that it was my signal but I checked the signal strength and it was suprisingly at around 8 or 9 bars. So if this is macro blocking, then I got it too. I got a lot of it in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

People in Toronto can pick up 14.1 but not 34.1.
People in Buffalo have problems locking on 34.1.

It would work similar to WIVB carrying WNLO as their

Does anyone from Buffalo remember WKBW News anchor Irv Weinstein?
I would have loved to hear him say "Pistol packing punks" one more time in surround sound. I met him in person once at Purchase radio where I worked in Downtown Buffalo. His face would have been a real eyeopener in HD for everyone. The new Will Ferrel movie about news anchor "Ron Burgundy" reminds me of News anchor Ron Hunter of WGR from many years past.

Sorry to digres from the technical stuff, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Buffalo.

From what I was told from an e-mail from CBC they are supposed to go on the air sometime in November on channel 20.

I do not know how much will be HD but if there is a hockey season I'm sure some of it will be.

"Then why did you leave????"

I left because in almost every category of life and economics, Buffalo leadership always did the wrong thing. It was always a shock going to Toronto and seeing a dynamic city. The people in Buffalo are great. Very friendly bunch and down to earth. It is a shame that most people who would have made the city grow better were forced to leave by simple economics and opportunity. The house across the street I grew up in was on the internet MLS for $500! Amherst, Orchard Park, Hamburg, Williamsville etc are great places in the suburbs.

Amherst, Orchard Park, Hamburg, Williamsville etc are great places in the suburbs. They are the reason (among others) that the city has the problems it has. They are the ones that complain about taxes (the ones that HAVE the money), but don't want to help anywhere where it is needed. The more that moved out, the worse it got.
Buffalo didn't build the 33, 190, 198
Buffalo didn't eport jobs to China and Mexico
Buffalo didn't let police and especially fire to live in the suburbs
Buffalo didn't elect Gorski who did almost nothing for the city the long 12 years he was in office
Buffalo had no say in where the mass transit went or didn't get extended to
Buffalo doesn't set the mininum wage
Buffalo had NO say in most of what caused the problems!
Buffalo has the Amherst IDA to steal business away with tax breaks
Buffalo didn't get a ONE BILLION DOLLAR campus courtesy of Albany
BUT, Buffalo gets blamed for ALL it's problems

No different then most other cities in the US!

BTW, enjoy your Hurricanes...................I'll take the snow ANY day!

Gentlemen, I was raised on the East Side of Buffalo and also lived on the West side near Richmond ave. When I was a teenager in the 70's I interviewed Mayor Stan Makowski and asked him about the future. He gave me a regional blueprint that I wished I kept. Downtown was to feature the UB campus and a domed stadium for the bills. There were plans for 2 more light rail lines criscrossing Downtown connecting the east and west sides. Another rail line was to go to East Aurora and the snow belt. Main Street was to be covered in an enlcosed mall from Tupper to the Main Place Mall.

Some people were proposing a regional government like Metro Toronto to advance the city. many politicos did not like that change of power.

Everything you said about whathappened is true. The State sent a billion dollar project along with the jobs and the youth to Amherst. The Feds built expressways to get you out of town. That fed the malls that drove more people out. taxes went up and the schools went down so people went outward. My experiance viewing the leadership in the city , county and state is that they are steps behind progressive areas that have rebuilt their towns. The deals are often short sited. the delays are so long that people go where they can get results faster. How long has the discussion of a new Peace Bridge been going on for?

When you watch a HD baseball game notice the "New Era" logo on the dugout. That company has had very little success with getting cooperation form the state and city for a new facility. I spent three days stuck in the Marine Midland building in the Blizzard of 1977. The Bills are always in my heart. I root for the Sabres when they come to town. Buffalo is in my blood. The point is that bad decisions were made that made every one there a victim.

My best memories of Buffalo were working downtown at 747 Main Street at Purchase Radio where selling Stereo equipment was a great job and you could actually help people choose and buy the best stuff. If the industry still valued service, knowledge and let you make a good living, I would return in a heart beat.

So please do not place me as a Buffalo basher. I spent 20 years in the Broadway Fillmore area and a few years near Buff State. My mother lives in Tonawanda and if it would be better for my family to be there, I would be buying a stone mansion near the Albright Knox Gallery and restoring it to its glory.

If you want to laugh at me, Comcast just set up HD service and High speed internet after 5 years of waiting in a supposed high end area.

Anyone around here knows we DON'T need another bridge, just more customs agents and booths!
Another case where the rich will get richer. Notice the suburbs won't let it be built there. As long as it's in the city, who cares!
As you probably know that POS governor we have has given Emanate Domain for this useless bridge . When it was proposed on Grand Island and Tonawanda it got shot down so quickly it made you head spin. Suburban NIMBY's (not in my backyard) get their wish.

Have the same question rg FOX HD and ABC HD - would be nice if Adelphia was able to work out a deal with them by the time the regular season (NFL) starts. Just got 8000HD installed the other day on my 50" Samsung DLP and HD channels look fantastic (esp. HDNet) . . . and this is via component video inputs. I don't think the DVI output on this box is being supported yet. Also, the two HD preseason NFL games that I have watched (1 ESPN and 1 CBS) have also been outstanding.

A couple of weeks ago I started getting a new WUTV channel named WUTV-EN, but to this point it's just a blank picture with static for sound. (I believe this is channel 14-1). Before this I only had two WUTV channels, WUTV-HD and WUTV-SD, which continue to come in fine. Does anyone know of a source for current status info on Buffalo HD / DTV stations?

Like -- who is at FULL power and who isn't . . . and WHY?

Like -- when will certain stations go HD

etc etc.

Does the FCC maintain and publish records such as this?
One would think so . . . . . I guess they're too busy protecting us from Janet Jackson's breast to worry about enforcing compliance with technical standards.

But I rant . . .

It's been frustrating of late as it seems that there has not been a SINGLE NIGHT

Has anyone heard anything as to when WGRZ NBC will be switching to full power?

Right now at 240kW I'm finding them very difficult to receive with any reliability in my area (about 87 miles away). The Olympics were hit-and-miss at best. Mostly miss.

I figure going to 480kW would help nicely, since ABC comes in fine at 91 miles and just 358kW.

videobruce
08-30-04, 09:42 AM
How well do you receive WIVB (39)? They are just up the road from 38 (literally).

Ch 33 (WGRZ) and Ch 38 (WKBW) towers are in slightly different locations which might make a difference. WGRZ is just under 1000' while WIVB & WKBW are 1400', which may or may not make a difference where you are. Doubling the ERP usually doesn't amke much difference, but with digital signals if the signal is just atthe threshold of you receiver that extra db or two might be enough to give you a solid data stream. Without a SLM you don't have any idea just what those signals are.

Have/can you try another antenna location, better cable or lastly a amp or preamp? Are you splitting/sharing the signal with anything?

I have finally installed my CM 4228 to replace my older yagi (from RS no less when I worked there 15 years ago) and will post my results shortly.

I'm in a physically poor area for such long distance reception (valley), thus I'm running two vertically stacked Televes DAT75's with a preamp on a 44' tower, all with new RG6 cable. I can't get much more gain than that - and I wouldn't really want to, as local stations are quite strong already.

WIVB is OK (although oddly doesn't seem quite as reliable for me as WKBW - go figure).

I think WGRZ increased their power on 33 for the Olympics.
But on Monday, it decreased.

During the Olympics their signal was rock solid! For two weeks
I did not have a signal dropout. During clear, cloudy or rainy climate
conditions there was never a problem. Well Monday night after the
Olympics the dropouts began. I could not get a stable lock and Leno
was unwatchable. Same problem tonight. Tried to watch the show at
9 pm and all I had was dropouts and a multipath mess.

So WGRZ, if you read these forums please return your signal to
Olympic Quality!

Viewing them. They are working for me here in N. Tona.

Last night was a baseball game, other was a movie "The Chasers" or something like that which we watched... pretty funny movie.

Tonight is the Republican convention, and a movie...

I checked last night; I do have the channels (773, 774) on the guide but no picture. This must have happened in the last few days but I never noticed.
I do see that on the channel line-up they are classified the same as the ESPNHD, I bet a HD premium tariff to follow soon.

How are they classified in the lineup? I just see channels on the guide.

With DirecTV rumoring to have 24 HD channels soon, if there is price increase Adelphia is going to be history in a flash...
The only reason keeping me on Adelphia, is powerlink (and it's discount with channels), and the number of HD channels.

Well still no INHD1 or 2 yet. They are in my guide but no picture.
Talked to a C/S rep (said he lives by me) and he was surprised that it was in my guide.
Good news, flagged down an installer in my neighborhood, at his house (Hamburg) he is testing the HBO-OD. Didn’t give me any release dates but did say it was cool.

Wish they'd start the HBO-OD stuff already! An article in the Buffalo News from 8/25 said they'd roll it out in the City in "about 2 weeks" and suburbs about 2 weeks after the City.

Evidently you have a lower package since you have "HDPLUS" showing as line item on your bill. What do you have?
Seems odd one person in similar area would get it when another would not... unless they were not "entitled" to the channels.

What box do you have? (mine is 3250HD)

Also, I checked my bill from adelphia and it does not split out anything related to HD at all, just the Advantage dollar amount. That along with the box rentals, and powerlink.

Maybe you need the everything pack to get INHD1 and 2 ??????

As far as the On Demand stuff, it shows when I view the guide, but if I scroll up/down it won't show the channels. If I try to pick one, it says "not authorized".

The new FOX 29 bug displayed partially outside of the 4:3 protected area is actually supplied by the FOX network "splicer" technology installed at the station. Seeing it indicates that WUTV is network HD capable. The real test will be 4pm on Sunday.

Next great champ on Fox 29-1 is widescreen and DD5.1. Not 100% sure whether it's HD but it looks like a washed HD. If SD, pretty good quality SD.

Is anyone having a problem locking on channel 39-1 , 39-2 or 39-3 lately.
All my channels lock in immediately except for those. I just noticed this problem in the last 48 hours. All channels lock in and display within 1 second. Those 3 channels take about 3 or 4 seconds before they display. Then they are fine. If I scroll among those 3 channels after locking in, I am fine. If I go to say channel 33-1 then back to 39-1, it takes 3 or 4 seconds to display again.
I am using a Samsung T165 firmware 125.

Same problem here in Burlington on a Samsung 351. WIVB seem to constantly have problems with the setup of their digital transmitters. I think the problem now is that they changed something in the data feed. There is no data available to our samsung units that allows them to save the channel id and positions in their memory which means they have to retune them from scratch every time you move away from 39 or 32.

Not true. My business is part of the Amherst Chamber of Commerce. The chamber spent $50,000 to hire the person who made the turnaround for Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other cities to come to Buffalo and work his magic. The 'control board' here led by a muckity muck of M&T bank (who lives in France 95% of the time) were told to not help him out, not vote on anything he does and to basically ignore him and let Buffalo sink. It is my belief that the top government and control board in Buffalo are buying up city property at pennies and will some day let the city come back so they can stuff thier corrupt greedy pockets, but right now they are the only things holding back Buffalo and it is a real shame.

How can an area with one of the NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD not take advantage? We don't have to market, we have millions of people who come here every year to see Niagara Falls and keep on going to Canada.

I was glad that the Bills game was not in HD. If in HD, I'd have watched the choked bills again.

After disappointing last season, I convinced my wife to get Sunday Ticket and really enjoyed the first week watching other teams.

The NYG/PHI game was the first HD game that Fox produced and I think they need to fix some issues such as audio dropouts and subpar HD video quality. Audio dropouts kinda fixed in the 2nd half but still the volume was way down.

Unless Bills becomes a superbowl contender, I doubt CBS will send HD trucks to Buffalo. CBS carries just 3 HD games per week.

The only situation where Bills are on HD is when they play against 1st tier teams.

I am using a Samsung SIR-T151 with the latest firmware and I'm also having problems. I do get the signal but it takes approx. 5 seconds to tune in the channel. 32-1 and 39-1 are now UPN, 32-2 and 39-2 are Doppler Radar, 32-3 and 39-3 are CBS.

Just a week or two ago, UPN finally started broadcasting in HD. Now, everything is messed up. I'm not sure if the station(s) are aware of what's happening.

On a different note, I'm disappointed that WB49-DT is still at low power. I noticed on the FCC site that the DTV Temporary Licence was up for renewal on Sept. 9, 2004. I'm assuming they're still stuck at .65 Kw? I was hoping to catch Everwood and Gilmore Girls in HD this year (no broadcasters in Canada have them in HD) but it doesn't appear likely. Maybe next year. Can anyone willing to admit they watch a WB show let me know if they are broadcasting in HD (as opposed to upconverted SD)?:D

They know, they did some reprogramming to the channels Tues and Wed. Sounds like they are waiting for hardware to pass the UPN HD feed. I am guessing they felt better passing CBS HD over their high priced transmitter rather that upconverted 4:3 UPN.

Good to hear. Hope you get all the kinks worked out.

Any chance of getting a regularly updated IPG? Only FOX and PBS (the 2 Toronto stations as well) seem to have a working IPG. ABC had it working a while back but now it just lists "DTV Program" for every item. I'm not sure if NBC has even added their callsign yet.

Thanks for the update WIVB! I'm sure we'll all let you know if it works! :-)

I'm REALLY looking forward to the new season in HDTV, but am very frustrated at certain reception issues... I don't even bother trying to get NBC right now, and CBS (from the CBS transmitter) was breaking up enough that I switched to cable SD (shudder). I know I don't have a signal STRENGTH issue, so I figure at least part of the problem has to be multipath. Now if LG could just get that magic bullet out...

one more request for tv4chief,

I believe most CBS HD shows are in DD2.0. (I certainly hope they upgrade it to 5.1) However, when WIVB sends audio signals, they send it as DD5.1 with only sound coming from L/R channel. So I can't use Dolby Pro Logic II to decode 2 channel into 5.1 sound. For other stations, I can use DPL II to decode 2 channel sound.

1) Is it possible for WIVB to send 2 channel signal as just stereo not 5.1?

or,

2) For DD2.0 shows, can you simulate 5.1 and send out all 5.1 channels? From this forum, I heard some stations does that for DD2.0 shows.

Daniel Tonks
09-18-04, 06:06 PM
I've asked on the CBS 5.1 / 2.0 thing quite a while ago... at the time the answer was "with the new CBS 5.1 equipment you will always get 5.1 whether all the channels are there or not", but then I heard from a New York CBS engineer that said that isn't so and it should only be sending 5.1 for actual 5.1 events, like sports.

Ah well, I've learned to live with stereo until it all gets sorted out. :-)

I punched in 34 and the TV-49 WNYO-HD name disappeared
and remapped to TV-6 WJAC-DT. It came in solid with 9 bars.

I could not lock 33-1 but this NBC channel in Johnstown PA

I also saw 25-1 no label and 20-1 from Youngstown OH.

Anyway... what's everyone else seeing?

Hi folks: I don't mean to change the subject but:

I am a newbie to this forum, think it is great. I am thinking of subscribing to Adelphia's HD service, and have a couple of questions.

1: Does the SA 8000HD allow for viewing from multiple output ports. I want to connect 2 TV's to the box (one HDTV via component{don't' think DVI is active on this box} and one in another room via coax). I will not be viewing the TV's at the same time. I believe I can do this on the SA HD3250 box, and am currently doing it on the SA3100 non-HD box.

2. Is the DVI port on the SA HD3250 active.

This may determine whether I stay with Adelphia or migrate to Voom. If anyone has the answers to these questions I would appreciate it.

I a videophile from way back and will definitely stay close to this forum.

I'm in the Buffalo area (zip 14221 - Williamsville) and just noticed that Adelphia added ABCHD (707) sometime in the last 24 hours. No guide data yet, but it's there and it matches channel 7. I'll check tonight to see what, if any, of ABC's programming shows up in HD.

Also, the Video On Demand features were activated this weekend.

To answer your other questions, I've had Adelphia's HD (and DVR) service for about two weeks and am generally pretty happy with it. I do miss my Tivo (the SA 8000HD takes some getting used to), but the pluses (HD recording, two tuners, PIP) far outweigh the minuses (not as much programming or searching flexibility as the Tivo, awkward interface). And the HD channels are superb---yesterdays Colts/Titans game on CBS looked amazing.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

1 ) No, you can only use a single output at a time, and you have to decide either HD or SD output. It is a system setup option as to which outputs are in use, requiring a combination of key presses on the unit itself to switch output modes. I have not heard of any updated versions of the software enabling both SD and HD outputs simultaneously.

2 ) I don't know if you meant the DVI port on the 8000HD, but I do not believe it is currently active.

But I still want FOX and ABC!

An antenna isn't an option for me as I'm in a small apt.

I've had the 8000HD box for about a month and a half now, and I'm pretty pleased with it. I'm not sure how you're getting $7.95 for it, as it was told to me that I'd get 3 months of free DVR, but after that it was an additional amount on top of the $8 for the HD box, $5 or so I think for the DVR service. I'm quite pleased with it, having switched from a Dish 811 with an antenna, having to deal with routine signal breakups at really inopportune times.

I had a Dish 811 hooked up through a ReplayTV 5040 which I would die without. We got the SA8000HD and had a hard time giving up so many of the features we'd grown accustomed to (automatic commercial skip, 30 second skip, show navigator, etc) that we elected to get a second digital box to keep connected to the Replay. Now we can still use our Replay for most of our viewing, and use the 8000HD anytime we want to watch/record something in HD. It's been working surprisingly well for us in the past month that we've been using the setup, other than having to bury the second cable box behind stuff to obscure the IR receiver from picking up signals intended for the 8000HD. Believe it or not, 4 layers of electrical tape spread across the entire display area didn't prevent the IR signal from getting through.

I think we pay $6.50/mo for the additional receiver, but are still saving money over our old setup with Verizon, Verizon DSL, and Dish (now we have Vonage, Adelphia Powerlink, and Adelphia digital cable). And my wife is satisfied since everything works just like it always has and she only has to push one button to change to watch HD.

ABC is there now?! Sweet!

I just looked at the HDTV set I want - the 26" Toshiba at Rosa's for under $600. I told myself "No" until ABC but maybe now I'll have to change my mind.

I didn't ask many questions about HD when I had Adelphia on the phone, it's very possible the $5 "DVR Fee" would kick in in 3 months and the rep didn't mention that to me.

For OnDemand... what am I doing wrong? If I use my TiVo to just go to the channels (906 for HBO OD for example) I just get "Not activated". I've called the 888 number twice - they tell me it's not available yet.

If I use my cable box remote and use their cable guide I can see the channels too. The "Free OD" one says in the upper left box in the guide "Please wait with On Demand application loads..." but nothing ever happens. I've waited over 10 minutes.

The other OD channels say nothing like that.

My friend in Boston, NY who doesn't subscribe to HBO can at least see what is for sale and it says "$0.00 for subscribers" or something. I don't even see that - and I DO subscribe to HBO.

Any ideas?

Thanks, ChrisSBU for the response re: the SA 8000HD. The 2nd question I asked was about the 3250HD STB. I was trying to confirm if the DVI output on that STB was active. It was confirmed that the DVI on the 8000HD is not active. I would like to connect my HDTV up to a STB via DVI, and the DVR capabilities are not as important to me.

The way I see it why should I degregate the signal by downconverting, and then by upconverting, when I can get straight 720P od 1080i out right from the STB.

If someone knows the answer about the DVI out on the SA3250HD, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,

The last 2 or 3 nights were very favorable to DX'ing! Probably the same tonight.
Signal strengths can vary 15db between night and daytime normally, but under these conductions considerable more! The path that was open seemed to be south of WNY.

...with an H :) I lived there for 21 years. And the way the Steelers played this week, I'm glad I didn't see the game.
Digital 48 (11) is WPXI-NBC, also from Pittsburgh. KDKA (CBS) has always had a strong signal, and 48 has been alright; WPGH-Fox 43 has been weak and inconsistent, but since Sinclair took them up to 720p they may finally be getting up to full power, you never know...
I'm almost tempted to put up a mast to try to get them. I haven't gotten a decent Fox-14 feed since I moved in to Buffalo a month ago. Although signal strength has been okay, all my tuner (MyHD-MDP120) has been able to pull in is 14-1 : 480i, no picture + static, 14-2 : 720p with no sound, and 14-3 : 480i - picture+sound but no better than analog. Sometimes I just get a signal lock with no channels. I haven't seen a Fox-HD game yet :( Was wondering if this is typical.

MDK,

Fox 29 (14 DTV) is difficult to pull in. I'm only about 8 miles from the tower, but my antenna must be pointed towards Grand Island with maybe a 50 - 60 degree margin of error. Even then, the maximum strength I've ever been able to achieve is 7 bars on my T351. Most of the time it sits at 5 or 6 bars.

However, the picture is stunning. I thought the Giants - Skins game looked better in 720p than the Colts - Titans game in 1080i on CBS.

I can get PBS pretty well, WNLO with some futzing. Aren't all of those

Does anyone know when UPN will do true HD

Does anyone know when WB 49 will do true HD -- hopefully in time for

Heh, I'm 50 miles away from Fox and it comes in great! Yes, they have HD now, including scripted shows. I haven't heard much about the power level yet, apparantly some problems with Canadian approval.

I think UPN is still waiting on some UPN reception equipment, thus they're currently broadcasting CBS HD.

I'm trying to keep a semi-up-to-date list of what's going on in HD in the Buffalo and Toronto areas, you can find a map of the physical location of all HD transmitters at the bottom: http://www.remotecentral.com/hdtv/

I have the Adelphia 3250HD box and it's connected via DVI and works just fine. Output changes from 1080i to 480i depending on channel viewed.

Output is setup selectable 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.

I like this in the fact my TV (sony xbr910) will change it's mode depending on input.

Just wanted to comment that it was nice to see someone at WIVB actively working on the encoding (or network reception) problem at the beginning of CSI:NY... interesting watching the picture flip back and forth between HD & SD, blank out as they try something else...

Also, is it just my imagination or has CBS really improved their upconverted SD image? Seems a lot sharper, more detailed, more vibrant, and with less edge flickering than last season. (CBS used to have one of the worst upconverted SD image of any HD network.)

I usually give up on FOX in disgust. I get great reception from all of the other Buffalo OTA HD channels, but not FOX. I can watch it for a few minutes at time without it breaking up into digital hash, but thats it. When I check my signal strenght meter it seems to be cyclic, going from acceptable to poor levels over and over... I dont know why this happens but it does. I live in the city of buffalo and I get all the other stations rock solid... Why can't FOX put out a decent signal? It seems like everyone has issues with them.... It's not like they have just gotten on the air, they've been on for many months.

We pass through whatever CBS sends to us.

Unlike CBS and ABC, FOX has been drop out free and flawless for me here in Monroe county. Antenna is pointed toward GI. Sounds like multi-path, not strength.

Being too close and getting too much signal can cause reception problems with digital signals.

I had signal level problems when I attached my Channel Master Spartan 3 preamp to my antenna, I was getting better signal levels without the amp. So recently I have added a variable attenuator from Radio Shack (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=15-678) for $8.99. I just attached it today and notice signal levels from WGRZ's D33 channel go from 4.1 dB to 12.4 dB just by adjusting the attenuator to maximum 20 dB cut.

That sounds like the more likely scenario.

I'm in a suburb of Toronto (Mississauga) and using an itty-bitty indoor antenna (Radio Shack jobbie), I receive all the Buffalo channels (except WNYO-DT). FOX29 is super strong and rarely glitches. When the weather is bad, NBC and sometimes ABC give me trouble. Overall, I'm very pleased, because on the analog side, I can only receive WNLO and WUTV with any degree of quality. All others vary from noise to heavy ghosting. Considering I'm using an indoor antenna, I can only imagine how far these signals will go when they're at full power!

braando
09-27-04, 09:44 PM
well I bought that radio shack attenuator and it didnt help. In fact, with that in line, I get no signal on Fox at any setting. so that's not the problem. what I do have is a cyclic signal which goes from good to weak ... it digitizes at times... guess its a strange signal from being in the city? no other channel does that however. Its the only one that comes from the other direction however... I think anyway

braando,

I live in Williamsville and I get Fox signal at 85/100 level according to my SRZ3000. Fox HD is stunning. I also get all other stations (ABC,CBS,NBC,PBS) at 85+ level.

I think the reason why you can't get a decent Fox signal is due to interference. Try to move your antenna away from any electronic devices. I had to put mine in an attic. If I put it next to my TV, I don't get any signals at all.

I hope it helps.

I'm one of the happy campers in WNY who gets all OTA HD signals pretty strong. I'd like to thank the WNY stations for their great works. Now that if ABC and NBC upgrade to DD5.1, life will be much better.

Braando,

That sounds like the exact problem that I've been having, except that it's ABC that's been giving me trouble.

I'm in the Town of Tonawanda, and I receive NBC, CBS, WNED and FOX perfectly, but on my Hughes E86, ABC's digital signal constantly bounces from 0 to around 60%, back and forth. The funny thing is that analog ABC comes in crystal clear. This started happening around 3-4 weeks ago. Before that the digital signal came in at 100%.

I'm using a VU-190 mounted on top of my 2-story house with a rotator. I even tried an amp, thinking that the signal wasn't strong enough, but it made no difference.

I hope you find a solution...hopefully one that will work for me as well!

I have 2 Hughes E 86's and at one time they both worked worked well on ABC,than all of a sudden neither would work and I had the same problem you are having.

My signal would bounce from 0 to 90 and would not lock and my preamp would not recognize a digital signal. I hooked up an old Samsung T 151 and it worked great.

Now I have a Bell 6100 (Dish 800) and it works perfectly as well telling me it is a problem with the Hughes because the other receivers work just fine.

Hope this helps:

It seems that they are indeed sending out plenty of power. My problem with them has not been quantity, but quality of signal. I can get 93 to 100% signal strength on the MDP-120, but the 3 sub-channels I get aren't of much use. 14-1 = 480i, no picture and static sound; 14-2 = 720p, it says dolby 5.1 at times but never puts out sound, and 14-3 = fully working 480i, but badly overcompressed.
From what I gather most of you with STB's aren't having the same problems as I am, although different tuners may exhibit different symptoms when a bit stream ins't quite right - I don't know. Is there anyone out there with a MyHD card? The last thing I want to do is bother the station or the card software maker if it is just me who can't make it work.
Also, a stupid question for those of you who have it working, but what sub-channels SHOULD I be getting right now on Fox? Trying to troubleshoot. Thanks.

Oh good, someone else with a MyHD tuner card. That makes three of us!

D-14 has been a problem ever since I got my card 6 months ago. Their main channel first didn't have audio, now it doesn't have video. I don't watch it so it's not a problem for me. Cliff stated the problem is on their end, but they don't claim to have a problem since it only seems to affect this card AFAIK.

MDK; are you right in Buffalo?

Thanks, videobruce. I'm glad its not just me. Something like this happened 1 1/2 years ago in Detroit where only the MyHD users lost reception, but that was with the MDP-100 that had inferior tuner hardware. It perplexes me that right now that STB's can handle WUTV's less than perfect signal and the tuner cards can't, despite the fact that MIT keeps continually updating the software for the cards.
Yes I was in the city untill a week ago, when I moved to the burbs (Updated location just now). I was only in Buffalo for a few weeks, and was tempted to claim that I moved out to get better reception :D . The Fox signal % I get in Amherst is quite a bit higher than I was getting in North Buffalo, the others seem generally worse, but I've only been here a couple days and need some time to play with the antenna orientation.

videobruce,

Nope nothing has really happened much up north. CityTV (53-1) and Toronto 1 (66-1) are still the only broadcasters sending out an OTA signal. The CBC (25-1 I think) was suppose to be coming online in late fall but that may be push back now cause of the hockey lock-out. There is a new driver out I think 1.63.1, I tried it out but it cause dvd dropouts so I reverted back to 1.63.

Yes, always has for me. I have been watching MNF and Lost on ABC. They always have momentary blocking with .5 sec of audio loss every 5 to 10 minutes. I use OTA with a HD Tivo Receiver, 95% signal.

They couldn't be. Cable uses a different modulation technology than OTA. So they must demod demux and remod. Thus no subchannels.
Another reason an OTA antenna and digital TV go together.
The cablecos are shooting themselves in the foot over how they're doing DTV, but as OTA TV is becoming more cluttered and less interesting, it matters less and less. Yes, you too, PBS.

cwoody222
10-07-04, 01:32 PM
First off: Adelphia isn't offering FOX and UPN yet because they don't have deals w/ those stations to carry the HD feeds.

WKBW was HD for a few weeks but Adelphia and WKBW worked out a deal.

Second off: OK, now I'm confused. If I go HD it's going to be thru Adelphia. I have a small apt, don't want DirecTV and don't want antenna's etc. Will I see the same dropouts, blocking, etc. that OTA people see? Or not?

SDB
10-07-04, 02:24 PM
I guess cwoody222's question is what I was eluding to.

Does Adelphia recieve the OTA signal, mod it and retransmit or do they get the signal through some other method? If it's just a retransmission then, other than signal strength, wouldn't OTA always be better?

GIGO?

Ah, glad to see it's not me. I know everyone had this problem when they first started, but that was quite a while ago and they MUST have got it fixed by now, right? Guess not.

Also, anyone else notice that there's no audio on 7-2, ABC News? I might actually check that channel out since I can't seem to locate it anywhere else, but without sound it's kinda useless.

I've been watching a bit more of ABC than usual lately - such as Lost and Boston Legal - and love those shows in HD except for those blips. I could even live with video blips, but I hate losing audio, since it always seems to happen at the worst times...

"So what did you find?"
"Well, when we got there we saw that the <blip>"
"Oh my god, are you sure?"
"Yes."

Aggh!

I once had a friend bring over his Rogers hi-def cable box to try out on my line, so I was able to do a nearly side-by-side comparison between that and my OTA reception, and OTA was noticably sharper from 20 feet away on a 60" screen. But nonetheless I keep WANTING cable for those days where weather conditions mess OTA reception up, or for Rogers' west coast HD feed.

Fox HD on D-14 also affects my FusionHDTV card, but I have found work arounds. Switching to 14-2 and then back to 14-1 works for getting picture and sound, and shutting down and then restarting the software also works.

I'm starting to figure out work-arounds for getting Fox-14 on MyHD card, too. I can never get 14-1 to work, but 14-2 (the HD one) works when I filp to it using the remote in full screen mode (the subchannels often don't register on the OSD, but I flip through them as if they were there). Sometimes I get no sound, and can't figure out why. But the trend lately seems to be that the sound works when they have the 5.1 flag on - which is the only time I really want to watch anyway. Sound always works for me on 14-3, but the pq is pretty poor there, even for SD.
I suspect they'll work the bugs out soon over at WUTV - an upcoming superbowl tends to be a strong motivator to broadcasters to perfect their art.

agreed. But I was drawing from my experience 2 years ago when all the MDP-100 users in Detroit couldn't get the local ABC station consistently. The station was a PITA for months, then two weeks before the superbowl all was fixed. I don't think anyone cared about the 1/2 dozen of us suffering MyHD users, but more likely they said, "hey we've got the big game coming up so let's make sure our signal is perfect." That's what I'm hoping for here - a sort of spill-over benefit for those of us having problems. Just my little reason for hoping that things will get better ;) .

Fox's Sunday baseball came in strong and clear in HD and looked very good . . . .

and I NEVER have gotten Fox HD this good OTA before.

Is this just atmospherics?
or has WUTV gotten it's act together?
or did they turn up the power just for the baseball game?

I live near the transmitters for 2, 4 and 7 . . . . and 49 but I can't get that either.

someone mentioned that fox 29 HD was good for a baseball game... well last night i was watching the yankee game and put it on HD in about the 6th inning. normally I dont even bother as its so annoying I cant take it. but it was perfect... so I was quite happy... then after the game, the news came on and it was back to the same crappy signal. ok, maybe its a coincidence I say...

until tonight.. I put it on 29-1 just before the game starts and its doing its usual mess... up/down up/down...etc...
so i leave the room and get something to drink and when I come back the announcers are talking and the signal is crystal clear... i'm watching the game now and its still perfect.

I did nothing to fix it and yet whenever the baseball game is on, the signal is perfect... yet I will guarantee you when the game is over, the signal will be crap again. How can I fix something that is clearly nothing to do with my equipment, since they can send me a good signal when they choose to, apparently??

anyone from channel 29 ever read this board???

oh yeah, this doesnt hold true for football.. those games are the same crap signal i normally have with other shows..

any ideas??

Maple is about 70 miles away from Grand Island (Fox/UPN/PBS), but you're 99-103 miles away from other Buffalo stations (CBS/NBC/ABC). I suppose a lot will depend on your elevation and what's between you and the transmitters - you sort of have to go straight through downtown Toronto.

You'll need a decent sized antenna, and I'd suggest a high quality HDTV receiver (not a cheap old model on Ebay, as is popular).

That's not water damage persay, it's coolant leaking from the tubes, it's done for, unless you plan on replacing the tubes in it, which isn't cheap. You could probably buy a new set for the cost of fixing it.

Again it's NOT the tube that leaked it's what is above the tube! But there is still the issue on the circuit board below that was damaged which is why you have no video. Get a estimate, if it's more than you wanted to spend no real loss. The sets only 4 years old. If it was, say 10 years, then I would forget it. You could also invest in a service manual and check prices for the coolant unit (for lack of a better term) and borad below that was damaged. Manuals are around $20.

Yes,

CBS via WIVB looked AWFUL last night.

They're back to their old Massive Microblocking.

What is UP with that [ anybody from WIVB reading this forum????? ]

My OTA signal for WIVB 4.1 was a solid 10 bars -- on Samsung 165 -- and was not fluctuating.

WGRZ 33.1 was fine -- at 10 bars

WNED 43.1 + 43.2 + 43.3 was fine with 10 bars AND all three channels going

WUTV 29.1 looked good with 6 bars . . until 10 PM when it dropped to 4-5 bars and started microblocking as well.

AND FURTHER RE: WIVB

EVERY time they switched from HD to upconverted SD there was a "glitch"
a one frame or half frame ghost image. EVERY time.

Again, what is up with this.

Anybody else notice the same things?

Looks like it's time to call WIVB and complain again.

Maybe the FCC can get on them for being technically sloppy instead of intimidating stations into NOT airing SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.
