View Full Version : A World of THANKS & The History of AVS Forum

[Special Note...The below was written on May, 13, 2002. We have grown a lot from that time.]

Well, well, well...We have reached over 1 million on-line posts and what a ride it has been!

First off we would like to say thanks, but no thanks to the donation idea to give to AVS Forum for the service. Very nice of some to have brought this up, however that is not what we are about.

The history of AVS Forum... (This was posted some time back in a thread..but felt this was a good time to bring this to all.) Please note...Alan and I work on this site as a team...However, I am writing this in the first person...

Back in 1995 Alan and I worked on the AV Science web site to take Home Theater, and what Alan (AV Science) offers, to the digital domain. http://www.avscience.com was born. It was doing ok but we needed a way to bring more people to the site. I came up with the idea of “AV Science Q&A” where people would ask questions to Alan and I on the topic of Home Theater. Seeing that this was part of the main AV Science site, the hope was that in turn, people would buy from AV Science. We would never, and have never, thought about charging to help people. We quickly became known as "The Boys of AV Science". This to me was quite funny...For I don't work for AV Science as an employee. We carried on our ideas of what made a good forum...that being to be kind to the people and they will be kind to you.

So as the site grew and grew over the next few years, it became evident that other people where starting to do exactly what we hoped they would do...Help People. So, the concept of "People Helping People" was born and continues to this day. In fact as Home Theater started to catch on and grow, the site did the same. It one day got to a point where it took on a life of its own and far exceeded our hopes.

In January 1999 AVS Forum was then born in the fashion you see it today. We still hold on to the same beliefs that helping and kindness can go a long way. The "People Helping People" idea is still here and still growing strong to make Home Theater even better and more enjoyable. Of course we still also hope that people would still buy from AV Science for the help given here. However, as I mentioned, the site took on a life of its own. Thus as more and more people came on the site, AV Science, as a company, started to drop of as the supporting source behind this forum. What I mean by this is that the newer members did not really even know about AV Science as a dealer. Seeing we do not believe in “pushing” product in front of the members (for the most part), this in turn was a negative effect on AV Science. We did not want the helpful forum to turn into a marketplace for dealers and people looking to make a quick buck…so rules were set into place to protect the site. AV Science, Alan, even though he can, also tries to follow the same no marketing rule for the most part. (Though Alan does come across some really good deals at times to pass along thus the new section to make this easier.)

So, with the site growing and growing it was costing more and more money to run it. So along came the idea of the banner ads to help support the site. So you know...today the site sees over 30,000 unique people a day and last month sent out 350 Gigs of compressed data to reader’s worldwide. Now add to that the cost of the servers over the years and the co-location costs of the servers you get the picture of the issues. As you can maybe see, the sponsors are now in fact needed to make this site possible. For without them, AVS Forum would be very hard to keep running as a free site for it is now bigger then what we had even dreamed of. The site now produces 12.5 million banner ads a month and requires 4 servers.

Even with all that we still want to keep this site, in its current form, FREE for all who care to come to help and learn about Home Theater. For without the members, the site would not be what it is today. Without the help of the un-paid moderators (who we also wish to thank), let’s also not forget the site would not be like it is today. With this many people coming and going, the site can only be as good as its governing rules, which Alan and I make based on our thoughts and beliefs, and the supporting staff behind it. I feel we have done this very well and please most people. As we continue to grow...adjustments must be made and we make them as we feel is right. As always...it will not please everyone.

In the last few years we have gone though ups and downs on the site because of the growth and the new people to the site. The more people, the more chance of people not seeing eye to eye. Can you imagine...we have had some people hate our rules!!! No! ...But Yes! But, alas, at the same time respect why they are in place. We have even had people form new companies based on ideas that came from this forum. And even have seen new products developed to fill a need that again arose of this site. All in all, a community of fine Home Theater enthusiast’s, worldwide, is what makes this all possible.

We have even done some great events like the last CES Dinner Party where over 300 people attended. That is something on it's own we are proud of. Then we have the Home Theater Cruise where we have at this time 191 booked passengers and manufactures who could not get in this year wanting to be involved next year. What a treat to know that we have built something so well enjoyed that people want to be part of these events. We even reach worldwide...of course through the net...But we have 6 couples comes from over seas from Germany, Sweden, Norway, France, and the Netherlands coming for the cruise! Now that says something!!!

So we wish to Thank You all for helping to make AVS Forum what it is today and for even wanting to help support it with donations as a way of saying thanks. To Alan and I, even the thought of offering to help is a great tribute to what we have built.

Soon will be a few ways you can give back if you so choose. One way is already in place via making a donation to the Elf Foundation who sets up home theaters in children’s hospitals nationwide (Just Click the banner ad to help.). Another way, soon to be mentioned, will be in the form of something some of you have wanted for awhile...but will now be asked to pay for if you really want it.

So all in all Thank You again. For you really have made AVS Forum one of the TOP places on the net for Home Theater. We have often said that if we ever stopped having fun...it would end. Well...We are still having fun and this is a community Alan and I are very proud of.

Sincerely,

Your AVS Forum Team

Life sometimes is a matter of timing. I was doing a home theater web search and ran into the AVS Forums back in January 1999, just when the forum in its current form came on line. Who could have ever imagined how the forum would take off???? Pretty amazing. Nice goin' David and Alan!!!

Great forum. Saved me $$, and cost me $$ as it pointed me in directions I could not have found otherwise.

Thanks a $million.

And... it's a lot of fun. The administration has been "not too hot" and "not too cold" --just right. Hope I've helped some. Thanks to all who have helped me!

Alan, David. What I've learned here has been indispensible. Your customer service on purchases, superb.

I'd like to think my small contributions to the several forums have added to the overall value of the incredible service you provide here, but there is an endless amazing group of people that post true insights here. I can't believe it's been since Nov 99 for me (Actually April, but I lost my password and had to re-register).

I'll never forget the memories of the beginning days of ReplayTV, and the amazing interchanges with the ReplayGuys. I've found HDTV here, switchers, DTVs, high quality screens, a new FPTV -- the list goes on and on. Also, the amazing wit of the signatures has made for many good quips in the OR. Your collective wit and wisdom has been shamelessly stolen.

Thanks again, guys, for an amazing community happening.

I echo all the sentiments above. I've learned more about HT and related technologies at "AVS University" than I could ever have learned anywhere else, through the wonderful "faculty" and infrastructure here. It's a priceless treasure, really, and it is a real pleasure to be a part of it.

One thing to note: Steve Bruzonksy (or was it Dave Bott?) asked a few months back for people to install the Alexa toolbar on their browsers, since AVS Forum was "only" ranked no. 10,005 (in terms of most unique hits) on the Web, according to www.alexa.com. The request was only up for a day or two (as I recall, but it wasn't long in any case), and as I type this, AVS Forum is ranked no. 1867, out of the millions of websites around the world.

That places this site in the elite company of most major equipment manufacturers, and way ahead of thousands sites with fancy content. I mean, for a site with no graphics, banner ads galore and a message board to be in the top 2000 sites (and probably higher, if more of us used Alexa), is nothing short of amazing! It means that we, as a community, have had and can continue to have a tremendous positive impact on this business if we choose to do so! Fantastic ...

My hat's off to everyone involved. Let's keep the mojo!

Cheers

Tom Taylor

Hey guys, not a single complaint. That's not like us!

As for this forum, it is the best and most informative regarding HT and all subjects A/V. Went from 'know nothing' to 'know something' to 'know-it-all' (just kidding) in one short year. Still read the posts daily.

Heck, I've only know about this place for a month, but the information I've gathered has allowed me to realize a true home theater. A huge thank you.

There are many other forums that are pretenders, but your forum is the best and the one I always visit. A great job and keep up the good work.

I have purchased from the AV Science store and will continue to as you provide great prices and service. I encourage everybody else to do this as well.

Thank YOU, David and Alan!

Our theater would still be only a dream at this point if it weren't for the wonderful wealth of information here at the AVS. Now we are almost to completion.

BTW... I think its time to upgrade the servers. To many people ..... Cant do searches... and it gets brutally slow at times

ok.......................................................... .....
THe people did not create it. Also The servers would cost alot to upgrade. THIS IS A FREE SERVICE. What do you expect. top of the line servers.

David, three million posts, that is quite a milestone. I found this forum in early 1999 while trying to setup a HT in in the late fall of 1998. Learned alto hanging around here! Also I have met many cool people from all over the world. Have made some close friendships with a few forum members here and around the country. This is a unique thing you and Alan have given to the world and hopefully AV Science forum will thrive for many years to come. THANKS AND CONGRATS!

Great, great, great work guys. Thank you so much.

Not only is AVS the best AV forum...but it's the best forum I've ever come across. Best run, most helpful, most curtious, most fun.

You indeed have a great thing going here. It's always the first thing I say when someone asks me about HT..."go to AVSforum." Time spent here is easily the best investment anybody can make in their HT. There's always somebody doing and sharing something that's cool...always something to learn.

AVS Forum sets a standard for AV&HT forums around the world!
I am a member of two best Russian AV&HT forums, we have many EE engineers and even scientists there, almost all of them use AVS forum's information, especially about the new products, as a useful source of knowlegde!
Thanks, guys!

great forum you guys have!! thanks!

I absolutely love this forum. My only silent compliant is the inability to post pricing information. I guess there is something to be said about being advertising driven. There is also something to be said for being 100% objective.

Ignore me, keep up the good work!

Greetings!

Well, we can't seem to find my old account ID, seeing as I didn't sign in for sometime it appears to have gone into the cyberether.

I was a frequent earlier contributor / participant circa 1999-2000 while working on my piece de resistance, The Nexus...

Now I know some of you long timers remember me...Darryll from East Norriton, PA...My theater is a Dennis Erskine design collaboration and a do-it-yourself (almost) inspired by the lunacy and fever that befalls one who finds themselves drawn into the black hole of the home theater bug.

Well, I'm back. My theater is still rocking, and for the most part I'm still enjoying the orginal equipment....But that is a topic for another thread...I just wanted to reintroduce myself to my brethren and ask that you shake the cobwebs from the dark recesses to offer a "Yo!" should you remember me.

Best Regards,

Darryll

P. S.

Well go figure. I didn't even realize that David and company did find my old ID and managed to reconnect me with my old posts, etc. I just noticed that. Although, I must provide a new URL to my HT, as dynamicpro.com as the web site of my consulting practice was abandoned some time ago. Not the practice, just the web site as the consulting (sofware development - Windows) went in the tank for a while.
