PAULSTORM 11-25-06, 06:37 PM I have never seen this on my 622. I cannot get KGIN, though.
G, have you experienced that problem with playback of KOLN-DT recordings? I may have to call Dish and get a replacement unit.
gpflepsen 11-25-06, 06:54 PM No I haven't. I do recall having pixelation at times on recordings (from any source) that seem to be from the decode and not the stored info. Perhaps these are related occurrences.
I wish COX would stop being greedy and cough up something for the locals they are charging the customers for. The masses can't handle paying and not receiving.
The figure I heard that Hearst/Argle wants is something like 50 cents per subscriber.
EdL
ScottChez 11-25-06, 08:29 PM I record KOLN just fine on my 622. I cant get KGIN.
This sounds like a classic case of Signal refection bouncing or Multiplathing.
Its were the signal will come in at two place as its bouncing off things. I would was re tweak my antenna moving it just a nudge and then record practice recordings till I got it right.
If this does not work, then I would guess the unit is bad. Sign up temporarily for there $5.95 a month extended warranty plan. Then call a few days later with the problem and they will over night air a new one out to you. A few months later you can then cancel the extended warranty after you are sure all is working. The CSRs could care less if you add it or remove the extended warranty.
ScottChez 11-25-06, 08:33 PM So sad for Cox and KETV, all these Husker games in HD. And now the Big 12 and Oklahoma in HD on Dish and Direct TV, but not COX.
KETV it putting it to Cox as many customers are complaining about missing there Huskers in HD. Nothing makes people more made than playing around with the Husker games.
Maybe enough calls might move that tracking bar chart up for COX cable and they might listen and go back to the bargaining table and work something out. Right now Cox is refusing to talk as long as KETV is asking for any money at any amount.
ajwees41 11-25-06, 08:50 PM Scott why should Cox pay for a free signal? Does KETV charge for thier HD signal over the air?
No they do not, so why should they charge Cox?
gpflepsen 11-25-06, 10:30 PM Let me ask this. Why do E* and D* pay for the signal. Why don't they just rebroadcast the signal? After all, it just out there free for the taking, right?
ajwees41 11-25-06, 10:34 PM Because that's the contract they signed. The FCC allows the KETV to seek carriage or money for thier signal and they want money.
ajwees41
gpflepsen 11-26-06, 11:11 AM The FCC allows the KETV to seek carriage or money for thier signal and they want money.

I would suggest you take your complaint to the FCC and make them force KETV into give the signal to COX for rebroadcast/distribution.
ajwees41 11-26-06, 11:14 AM I would suggest you take your complaint to the FCC and make them force KETV into give the signal to COX for rebroadcast/distribution.
golf I will ask again Cox is not avalable in your area, so why do you care?
I already asked and the FCC will not do anything. They can't do anything until the Analog cutoff.
ajwees41
ScottChez 11-26-06, 12:59 PM Let not forget that KETV has to pays a ton of money for the ABC signal. They just want to pass the cost on to Cox.
KETV also had to spend an other Ton to do HD over the air.
Paying ABC for HD, paying for the equipment to do HD over the air and Cox wants it all for free?
This is why Direct TV and Dish pays KETV and its also why the FCC and Congress approved the law allowing KETV to charge for both the SD and HD Signal for any one like Cox that re-transmits it.
Nothing is really free.
gpflepsen 11-26-06, 12:59 PM golf I will ask again Cox is not avalable in your area, so why do you care?
I care because the complaining is pretty prominent on this Omaha/Lincoln forum. Options are available to get this free programming outside the COX option. Pursuing one of the options rather than complaining here on the forum would seem to be a more fruitful use of time.
I already asked and the FCC will not do anything. They can't do anything until the Analog cutoff.

It sounds like free enterprise is starting to influence marketing strategies.

That's only good if your tv has a tuner built in. Cox's HD box is all that is needed to recieve HD on an HD ready tv (No HD tuner built in)
If KETV want's to charge for the HD signal why don't they charge the people who recieve free over the air?
ajwees41
ScottChez 11-26-06, 06:18 PM KETV cant charge those who get it over the air thats illegal.
The law is that they can only charge the Middle man (or carriage provider) is charging ANY KIND of basic fee for basic service.
Since cox charges $14.95 for the basic service, KETV can legally charge for SD and HD if they want to.
Remember the free life line service that cox used to have?
If COX still had that, they could not charge. Congress wanted the Life line service to all come back when they updated this law. Trouble is none of the cable systems seemed to bring it back.
We need to change the law again to make things right, I dont like it either. I would love to have a free basic Life Line with my cable. I have Cox Internet and Telephone, already, but if I want the basic channels so I dont have to run an Antenna to the atic I have to PAY COX CABLE $14.95 a MONTH plus pay a $50 setup fee.
Some were estimated that Cox makes $35 profit on the setup fee and an other $6 a month Profit on the Basic channels. Since KETV SD and HD is part of the basic channel package you can see why KETV want to charge Cox and why Congress passed the law allowing it.
We need to change the law. Free Cable Life line for all which means free KETV SD and HD for all.
ajwees41 11-26-06, 06:59 PM What can we do to change the law? What's the exact law? Does anyone have a link to the law that needs changed?
ajwees41
ScottChez 11-26-06, 07:26 PM There are many sides to this debate and LOTS of BIG Interest company money telling congress how to vote. I would search Google to find both sides. Below are some links of interest to help you decide.
One Side: called the Attack of the Must carry
http://www.lasarletter.net/drupal/node/108
An other side can be found in the willkpedia entries:
The law is covered under this Must Carry law passed by congress and also voted to be up held by the supreme court. Since it went to the supreme court you can tell that many do not like it, so much that it had to go to the supreme court.
Most who voted for it are long gone, and a new bill could make it through now that would fix this problem.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Must-carry
"Retransmission consent
In the U.S. retansmission consent has often been chosen over must-carry by the major commercial television networks . . .
This option allows broadcasters who own popular stations, such as CBS, NBC and ABC or Fox to request cash or other compensation from cable or satellite providers for signals. These networks have usually attempted to gain further distribution of cable services in which they also hold an equity position rather than direct cash compensation, which cable systems have almost universally balked at paying. In some cases, these channels have been temporarily removed from distribution by systems who felt broadcasters were asking too steep a price for their signal."

100% Digital Channels 15 and 42 are to be pulled from Dishnetwork.
Those with Dish HDTV tuners will still get the channels over the air.
I wonder if they will later pull there HD feed from Cox since they are on a contract rampage wanting MORE MONEY for there so called Free over the air digital channels.
I expect more and more station to pull channels as they want money for there free over the air digital channels.

Cornhustler 11-29-06, 10:49 AM They must be hurting for money. They can't afford any high power transmitters, high definition equipment or even a single stereo transmitter in south central Nebraska. The following quote explains the money breakdown.
Harry J. Pappas, Chairman and CEO of Pappas Telecasting Companies, said, “It may surprise our DISH viewers to know that, while DISH is charging them $5.99 per month just for their free local broadcast stations like the ones owned or operated by our company, DISH is unwilling to pay even a modest price - less than 19 cents out of the $6 per month they charge their customers - to the local stations that must spend millions of dollars to buy - or to produce - this programming. Our stations’ ratings demonstrate that our programming is of high value to our loyal viewers. We encourage those viewers to contact EchoStar in order to make sure that their opinions are heard loud and clear.”
It seems to me like they have been pouring money into their spanish language stations and neglecting the stations that have made them the largest privately-held, commercial television broadcast group in the United States.
johnwcookjr 11-29-06, 11:03 AM I'd be curious to know what HBO, Showtime, ESPN or Discovery charges Dishnetwork for their main channel feed/customer, just as a basis for comparison.
Based upon what I thought I remember reading in this thread in the past (don't flame me if my grey matter is out of cal on this) the locals (KMTV/KETV) were asking Cox for somewhere along the lines of 50 cents for distribution rights for both of their feeds (HD and SD over Cox.) If that's the case then I would suggest that 19 cents for Fox's SD only channel feed may be roughly in the ball park. I say roughly, some would argue 50/50 for each feed. From my point of view rabbit ears are very effective in the Omaha area, paying for the SD feed from any content carrier is foolish.
Anyone have a guess how much more KMTP is asking for thier SD feed?
Thank god for free over the air HDTV!
Cornhustler 11-29-06, 11:21 AM Still another reason to set up an antenna among others.
1. Receive local stations that are pulled off satellite.
2. Receive local stations pulled off cable.
3. Receive local stations in High Definition and Dolby Digital.
4. Receive local stations in their highest quality.
5. Receive local stations when you experience rain fade on your satellite.
6. Receive local stations when your cable goes out.
7. Receive local stations not carried by satellite or cable.
8. Receive distant stations when the conditions are favorable.
9. Record local signals via antenna while watching another source.
and the best part....after your equipment is paid for it's free.
Why wouldn't anyone want to have a backup?
Forgot to add that KHGI Kearney (ABC) will be pulled off DISH as well.
rmalbers 11-29-06, 12:49 PM FWIW: My cablecard TV on Cox is now showing channel 807 as A&E HD. No signal yet.

ScottChez 11-30-06, 12:20 AM Some good news on Dish. There is a free CW (15) replacement.
I called Dish. They said if the channels are cut, they will give us a $1.50 a month credit.
They also said if we called we could get up to 3 CW channels from there Superstation package also for $1.50 each. Since we get $1.50 credit, one channel is FREE.
So we have channel 15 covered for free. We will get it from NewYork or LA which has much better programing than 15 as they can aford the bigger syndication shows after prime time.
When you call asked for the credit for missing Fox and CW. Then ask for One Superstation channel ala carte.
As for missing Fox channel 42, we can get it over the air. If you have an HDTV Dish Tuner it will still be on your guide as normal on the yellow channel.
In the past these things always work there way out with Dish and the provider after a few weeks as they both get tired of the daily phone calls of people calling wanting there channels back.
The Super Stations are listed below, they are covered under a separate grand fathered law and cant be taken away. They are $1.50 each or $5.95 for all of them. Only Dish has them.
KTLA TV 5 (CW) Los Angeles
WPIX TV 11 (CW) New York
KWGN TV 2 (CW) Denver
WSBK TV 38 (Ind.) Boston
WWOR TV 9 ( MNTV) Secaucus, NJ
Dont forget to call Dish and our Local Station if they are cut. They will work harder to get the contract resolved if they know there customers and viewers are mad. One can also call the sponsors of there local TV ads telling them we are now getting the CW from Newyork and are NOT watching there local ads anymore.

PAULSTORM 11-30-06, 09:53 AM http://www.pappastv.com/pressdetail.php?id=94&prYr=2006
Pappas Telecasting Companies, the largest privately-held, commercial television broadcast group in the United States, today announced that it has reached a long-term agreement with DISH Network to continue the carriage of Pappas stations in 11 markets. The agreement is for a period of five years, beginning December 1 and running through November 30, 2011. Under the agreement, nearly two million DISH subscribers who currently receive the signals of Pappas stations via DISH’s Direct Broadcast Satellite service will continue to receive the stations.
As part of the agreement, The CW Network affiliate KCWL/Lincoln, operated together with the Omaha World-Herald, and Pappas’ Azteca America affiliate KAZR/Reno, will be added to DISH’s Local Channel package beginning February 1, 2007. Additionally, KUNO-TV, a sister station to KTNC/San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, will be added to DISH’s Local Channel lineup in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose and the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto Designated Market Areas when separate programming is initiated on KUNO-TV.
Harry J. Pappas, Chairman and CEO of Pappas Telecasting Companies, said, “We appreciate the fact that DISH has recognized the value of our stations to their subscribers. We have reached an agreement that contains all of the economic terms that we had been seeking. We are extremely happy for the sake of our viewers that this matter has been resolved amicably and in a timely fashion. The support of our viewers made the difference in the last twenty-four hours; we thank them one and all.”
The Pappas owned and/or operated stations and markets covered by this agreement include KAZA/Los Angeles (Azteca America); KTNC/KUNO-TV (Azteca America) in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose and Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto; KAZH/Houston (Azteca America); WCWG (CW)/Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem; KMPH (FOX) and KFRE (CW)/Fresno-Visalia California; KCWI (CW)/Des Moines-Ames, Iowa; KPTM (FOX), and KXVO (CW)/Omaha; KDBC (CBS)/El Paso; KHGI (ABC), KCWL (CW) and KTVG (FOX)/Lincoln & Hastings-Kearney, Nebraska; KREN (CW) and KAZR (Azteca America)/Reno, Nevada; and KPTH (FOX) and KMEG (CBS)/Sioux City, Iowa.

awjees, you're very naive to think the cable companies are not paying any of the other local stations to carry their signal...case in point the recently resolved Dish/Pappas dispute. Any station worth a tinker's darn is charging Cox/TWC/Dish/Direct for their signal whether it's SD or HD. There is no free lunch!
I for one am getting sick and tired of this KETV/Cox dispute tying up this board, especially when you're such a Cox apologist. I'm sure Cox has a little wiggle room in their monthly fee they charge you to give to KETV and vice versa with KETV. Just look at the Dish/Pappas dispute...all Pappas wanted was 19 cents per subscriber out of the $5.95 fee they charge subscribers for the locals package.

Yes I get that.
Ketv most likely wants more like 50 cents per customer.
I am getting sick of Ketv saying Cox charges for thier HD signal with monthly box fees.
I also think it's kind of strange the KMTV was pulled untill a new owner took it over. KETV was pulled, but WOWT and KPTM and CW where not pulled. The only difference I can see is Wowt and KPTM have thier sub channels on cox.
So take your pick.

This is the Digital TV and HDTV message board so talking about KETV and Cox is on topic.
JoelWNelson 11-30-06, 06:26 PM Not intending to start a war here... but I'm wondering if a split in the thread is needed -- either separating Omaha and Lincoln, since they are really separate markets, or else having "Omaha/Lincoln OTA" and "Omaha/Lincoln Pay TV"... or even just "Omaha - Cox".
I've noticed that the AVS threads for other metro areas often have a separate thread just for cable customers. Why not Omaha, especially considering with Cox there is reason for quite a bit of discussion.

ajwees41 12-01-06, 02:09 AM Cox launched ITV applications.

Discovery Health is now only on 104

the INHD channels might have been moved so there would be a free channel to move ESPN2HD to if Cox gets KETVHD back.

ScottChez 12-01-06, 09:30 AM Here is an other side.
I can sort through the posts. I read what is of interest to me.
I think we should keep it the way it is, too much confusion as Lincoln and Omaha is a Small DMA compared to the big cities with multiple threads. Some have this thread booked marked and only visit twice a year, they would be lost.
Plus some who have Cable might want to hear about the things on Sat in case they want to switch. Same with Cable, many would of switched to cable if Dish cut channels 15 and 42.
Lincoln and Omaha DMA do overlap with channels 15 and 42. Plus Lincolns channels 8 and 10 are picked by some up in Omaha and the Omaha channels are in lincoln.
jonnyozero3 12-01-06, 11:01 AM I don't think this thread is anywhere near busy enough to warrant splitting it up.
johnwcookjr 12-01-06, 11:32 AM This thread was originally named with Omaha only in the title. The AVS administrators merged Omaha with Lincoln and changed the title, so even if preferable by some I doubt splitting up the two is possible.

Gary Omaha 12-01-06, 06:05 PM Am I the only one in the world who is driven crazy by pictures stretched in order to fill the screen? I see them wherever I go and there's a widescreen TV.
Last night I nearly puked when I punched in the new A&E HD channel and the picture was stretched! Not by my TV, but apparently by A&E to fill the box.
I want to see the aspect ratio that the program creator intended!!

johnwcookjr 12-01-06, 06:23 PM Gary
Are you talking about zoom/scan (HBO does this to fill the 16:9 frame, 1.77:1 from a 1.35:1 film) or are you referring to horizontal stretch mode which makes everything look fat? If its the latter I agree that is distracting, ESPN-HD did the stretch often when they first started but don't remember seeing it lately.
Maybe A&E is just going thru growing pains and this will soon go away.

The latter -- stretching horizontally! Ick!
I don't mind evenly zooming to expand the picture to fill the screen -- it's the stretching in one direction only that's so distracting to me. And I see it all the time.
Gary Omaha 12-01-06, 07:33 PM you must really like A&E

The KETV & Cox war is just the tip of the iceberg. NFL Network wants Timewarner to pay them 72 cents per subscriber. With the elimination of must carry, all of the stations will be asking the cable/sat providers for more loot. Which will mean higher bills for the consumer.
Cox is standing firm & saying no. Because if & when they say yes, our cable bills will be going up. Although I am greatly inconvenienced by Cox's decision, I do appreciate there position.
Needless to say there will be a OTA HD Tuner under my Christmas tree.

ajwees41 12-01-06, 08:44 PM The KETV & Cox war is just the tip of the iceberg.
EdL
Doesn't must carry only concern the Local over the air staions?
ajwees41
johnwcookjr 12-01-06, 09:26 PM Alwees, yes, I think you're correct, the must carry is a locals issue only, not directly related non-network cable feeds such as NFL.
On a separate note I'm glad to see some of you putting some control back into your own hands with the thoughts of acquiring an OTA tuner. Might I suggest you read the threads here in the HTPC forums. There are numerous PC HD cards available, some are as simple as a USB 2.0 box, if you have the CPU and video card horsepower to spare. If your lacking for CPU speed look for a hardware assisted card like the MyHD. HTPCs work well for recording/playback of HD locals and a PC used as a scaler with TheaterTek software is the cats meow for standard definition DVD playback. Most if not all of the HD Tuners for the PC will work hand in hand with TitanTV. Once properly setup clicking a program from the Titan guide will add itself to your record list, pretty simple.
Acquiring the reception set top box hardware is the easy part, the antenna installation and coax feed will probably be the biggest hurdle for those of you who take this on. Depends greatly upon your location. If you're in a flat pat of town and can see the tops of the towers you have it made. We're in the bottom of a large valley, I spent some time and dough getting our system up (mast mounted amplifiers, rotors etc.)
Glad to hear Cox is getting more HD content, that'll put more pressure on Dish if they don't already have it. Not that I'm an A&E fan but this total transition to HD is taking far too long. Wasn't NTSC originally scheduled to be cut off in 2006? Continuing to power both their NTSC and ATSC transmission lines each and every month has to be hurting the locals bottom line. No wonder they're looking for ways to increment their cash flow.
Bring on more HD!
dfunk44 12-02-06, 09:11 AM noob here...I called Cox twice and got two different answers on this. One said yes, the other said I need to buy the minimum digital package.
If I go and buy my own motorola dvr and hook it up to my hdtv, will I receive the channels I'm already paying for on extended basic service in hidef (ESPN, AE..)? And can I use the dvr features?
ajwees41 12-02-06, 10:06 AM No Motorola doesn't sell to the general public. The only customer owned equipment they allow on the system is a cable modem.
I bet the support person thought you were asking if the S3 Tivo would work.

In the local programming category it lists Instant Answers and if the interactive program is selected to see more info. It gives an ending date of 12/31/06, but in the freezone category under Cox instant answers it gives an ending date of 8/26/07.

The article just talks about the possibility of the big 12 forming a tv network.

johnwcookjr 12-02-06, 04:08 PM Ouch, I hope that doesn't mean loss of televised Husker games over the local networks.
I don't mind an occasional PPV Husker game, it beats no option at all for a lower lever matchup but the quality of the broadcast suffers.
Was there any hint of this Big 12 network using HD cameras etc?
I was using the NFL Network as an example of the prices that networks will be trying to extract from cable/sat providers, I know it is not covered by the must carry laws. These fees will be passed on to the consumers.
As an early adapter, I have no choice but to buy an OTA.

ScottChez 12-03-06, 09:17 PM "Anyone else have issues with ESPN2 HD due to the sports ticker they always run at the bottom the screen causing the picture not to fill the whole TV horizontally."
I have never seen any problems on Dish. I wonder if its in there Uplink feed that there getting.

An other forum is saying Dish plans to add A&E in HD in March right after they work through there Distant locals issues for those in TV markets with out all 4 networks.
So the pressure is working, more HD is always good no matter who gets it.
johnwcookjr 12-05-06, 10:28 PM FWIW the over the air ATSC tuner in the Dish 622PVR is superior to that in the older Dish 6000 and the scan for channel feature is pretty speedy to boot. Our new Vip 622 is picking up all the locals in HD from an elcheapo omni antenna without a hiccup and local channel to channel lockup times have improved too.
Nice box, I would reccomend it if anyone's comtemplating a hardware change. If the DVR capability is a bit too steep for your pockket book I'd imagine that the new Vip 211 has the same upgraded OTA ATSC tuner capabilites.

I'm not receiving WOWT-DT, either 6-1 or 6-2. It was working fine last night, but not when I just tried it. I am getting everything else fine (3-1, 7-1&2, 15-1&2, 42-1&2). This is with a Dish VIP622, a MyHD MDP-130, and a FusionHDTV 5, so I think that elimiantes a receiver or antenna problem. Is anyone else seing this?

FWIW, WOWT-DT is back up for me.

johnwcookjr 12-08-06, 11:00 AM Any of you Cox customers using a cable card for HD access? If so, how is it working for you?
rmalbers 12-08-06, 01:00 PM I've been using cable card on my Sony for almost two years (I think) with COX Omaha. It works fine for me. It's on the TV in the den (not the main tv). As you know (probably) no interactive channel guide and no on demand. When they get two way cable cards then I'll get a new 'main' tv with that. I hate cable boxes BTW. Also I want to get a cable card in my media center PC ASAP. We'll see how all that works out when Vista is truely available along with the PC cablecard box/PCI-card.
ajwees41 12-08-06, 02:48 PM KETVHD
KETV might think that since some cox areas charge $4.95 for Discovery and ESPNHD they also charge for locals. Only location I saw was Orange County California.. They don't charge for locals in HD, but do charge for ESPNHD.
ajwees41
Dude, enough! We already know your stance about the KETV vs Cox dispute. No one in this forum can do anything about it. Go picket in front of the KETV offices, but please give it a rest!
ScottChez 12-10-06, 02:18 PM Sometimes talking about an issue helps. Since this is the HD and Digital TV forum for Omaha and Lincoln, it is right to talk about it.
Yes there are things we can do. Remember when Papass was about to cut off Channel 15 on Dish, once they heard from the viewers that they were just going to get the CW for LA or NY from Dish for $1.50 a month or free they reached an agreement the very next day.
An other option: if KETVs advertisers all found out we were watching ABC HD from Lincoln and boycotting KETV I bet they would all of a sudden reach a deal.
Point is there are things we can do, and this is the place to brain storm and figure it out.
Otherwise it may be till 2009 when the SD is cut off before KETV HD is back on Cox.

Look at the bottom of the dvr and see if it says what model it is. Omaha latest is the 6412 pphase 3. If your dvr is over 1 year old chances are you have a phase 1 or 2 6412.

Is it that bad? I've grown tired of losing everything but my OTA channels during a snowstorm/thunderstorm. If we could get two HD DVR boxes I might consider it. Even maybe buying a couple of Tivos.
Gary Omaha 12-20-06, 06:06 PM Does anyone know if WOWT-DT is doing some enhancing of their HD signal when it is not transmitting HD content? Their HD picture always seems clearer and crisper to me than the other locals, even when they're showing an SD program. It makes everything on WOWT-DT look better, and that probably attracts some viewers who are undecided about what to watch.
johnwcookjr 12-20-06, 07:05 PM Psycho
Do you lose your satellite feed often during thunder/snow storms? What provider are you using?
We rarely have trouble on this end, maybe once twice a year, and then only briefly.
We're using Dish Network, installed and tweaked the look angles myself.
I'd be curious to know just how often you're dropping out due to storms. Sounds like something may be amiss in you Dish look angle alignment.
Have you considered an oversize rain fade resistant 30" dish?
Regards, John
ScottChez 12-20-06, 07:40 PM I only loose my Dishnetwork signal when it is hailing out or about to hail, NEVER any time else.
Again, making sure the dish is pointed correctly so the signal strenght is strong is the key.
Snow will never cause a dish outage unless it is not pointed right, I would call dish to have it re pointed, just mention that you want to drop the service and they will be right out.
The only time Snow can cause an outage is when it is ICE Snow, where the dish is coated with snow that you cant see it anymore. For that, spy some Pam on it before the snow storm, makes it slide right off.
SychoBC 12-20-06, 08:51 PM I had DirecTV and it seemed anytime we had storm clouds overhead, whether it was raining/thundering/or lightning or none of the above we would lose signal. We lost signal/had it pixelate probably 20 times last year. We have the big 3 LNB Oval DirecTV dish. We have called DirecTV and they told us our signal strengths were ok every time. Oh well it's their loss, over 150 bucks a month plus NFL, MLB, and NBA packages.
SychoBC 12-20-06, 08:57 PM Would it be worth it to get a TiVo Series 3 with 2 Cablecards than their HD DVR? I've used the TiVo interface since 2002.
ScottChez 12-20-06, 09:44 PM I would think the Tivo 3 would be better.
I am still hearing from several that the Cox HD DVR will miss or loose recordings due to errors at least once a month. For me loosing even one of my fav recordings in 2 Months is a big NO for the Cox DVR. Even with the lastest update and model some are still telling me they are loosing recordings or they error out.
I have had all 3 Dish, Direct TV Tivo, and Cox DVR. Only Cox would loose recordings or mess up timers.

Well my HD Tivo only recorded 15 minutes of King of Queens and 18 minutes of Identity tonight so, I'd say once a month is an improvement.
Anyone here having problems with the new Navigator software on Time Warner HD boxes?
My SA8300HD was recently upgraded to Navigator and now I am unable to get it to send a picture to my tv through HDMI. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with a failed attempt to authenticate HDCP. I had similar problems with the old Passport software, but was able to eventually fix them by wiggling the HDMI cable on the back of the DVR. If, after attempting a connection through HDMI, I connect with component cables there will be an error message saying, "Your tv can not support this format" or something similar. My tv is an Olevia LT32HVE which supports HDCP and all signal formats other than 1080p.
There needs to be a separate thread just for complaining about Navigator. If there already is one please direct me to it.
brad_arth 12-22-06, 07:08 PM I am running a MCE2005 box and using an antenna to grab the digital channels available OTA. For the 'main' .1 channels I can pull the proper guide information. I have to manually add the .2 .3 and .5 channels respectivly to the MCE guide, therefore it's not pulling any programming information. I know there are 'hacks' you can do to your registry to pull down digital info from Cable and Satellite and cross that info into you OTA guide info, but I haven't figured out how to do this for our area.
Has anyone gotten the MCE guide info for channels 6.2, 7.2, 26.2, 26.3 and 26.5 to show up properly? Thank you
vogon13 12-24-06, 10:53 AM FWIW:
I have 2 30 inch D* dishes and an 18 incher block switched to the 119, 101, and 110 satellites repectively, and a triple lnb D* dish all lined up in a row on my roof and connected to 2 HR10-250, 2 SD D* TIVOs, and a couple of single tuner plane jane D* receivers.
I have noted the signal strength on the 30 inch dishes always reads within a point or 2 of the signal strength from the triple lnb unit.
The signal from the 18 inch dish (110 satellite only) is always significantly lower ( like more than 10 points) than the other dish.
So, has anyone ever married the triple lnb head to an oversize dish?
{LOL}
oldschl 12-25-06, 08:19 PM It seems to be getting a little better since the first broadcast, but NFL networks live broadcasts of fooball games seems to be pretty bad for both my TVs. I wish Cox would broadcast NFL Networks games in HD, and it would make my complaining go away, but until then, I have to complain about their PQ. The first week they broadcast, it looked like I was watching the game through my dad's coke-bottle glasses. This last week's broadcast of the Packers game was a little better, but the main camera on the side of the field still looks like I'm watching the game through a fish bowl. Anyone else experience the same thing?
I agree about the football on Cox.. The games are looking really grainy - I've seen MUCH better.

rmalbers 12-30-06, 09:45 AM My signal is fine, it's the compression level of the digital stream that is bad but like I said, it's better than it used to be. A year or so ago it was like VHS quality.
Brad Smith 12-30-06, 11:09 PM Universal HD has been added to Time Warner Cable in Lincoln on channel 114. It seems to have replaced the now-defunct (or dying) INHD2, though my cablecard TV and TiVo S3 still identifies the channel as INHD2.
The quality seems a bit off compared to what we got from INHD2, but it's nice to have the channel.
ScottChez 12-31-06, 12:14 PM Rumor has it that INHD1 and INHD2 is not making any money so they are going to consolidate all if it into one INHD1 and then make it avl to Dishnetwork this spring as part of there HD package.
Direct TV is expected to get it by Fall.
They will then have more money from Dish and Direct to buy more HD content so they do not have to keep repeating shows every other day. It will be more like HDNET (which is on Direct and Dish today).
All in all this consolidation will be a good move for all.

Cornhustler 12-31-06, 11:32 PM Just wanted to show you what those of us in central Nebraska went through the last two weeks.
We had a bad ice storm the week before Christmas but never thought we would get a much worse one only nine days later. The good news? The XG-91 is still pulling in stations as good as it ever did. I may have to straighten it out a little and replace some of the elements. As of today the antenna is still going strong and the branch that inflicted the damage is no more, a victim of mother nature.
The RG-11 with Snap'N'Seal connectors appears to be fairly strong.
Week one pic was taken Dec. 21st and the second was taken yesterday Dec. 30th.

ScottChez 01-04-07, 01:05 PM New word is Cox will be adding at least several more HD channels, right after they announce there rate increase of $3- $5 and a reduction in price for the DVR rental fee.
Two channels will be added right away (to help off set the upset customers of the increase) and the others will be phased in over the next 12 months.
Turns out those free HD channels are not realy free with Cox. They are raising everyones rates to help cover it.
In my mind $3 will be well worth it for more HD, but Non HD customers will be getting ripped off as they are helping to pay for others so called free HD.

Any idea why KMTV cannot stay on their HD feed during an entire program? It seems like almost every show I've watched over the past month, contains at least one instance where they are showing the HD feed, but then switch to the SD feed (many times with a odd "buzzing" in the audio) and then switch back to the HD after 30-60 seconds...
I've checked KOLN and they don't seem to have this problem like KMTV does.

Gary Omaha 01-10-07, 06:52 PM they used to leave the HD fead alone and uncorrupted from annoyances - I'm just curious why they all of a sudden struggle with this...
There's a very good chance that the success of HD is causing this.
When few people were watching the HD feed, the sponsors who were paying for those (VERY ANNOYING!) little time & temp drop-ins didn't necessarily care if they were simulcast on the HD feed, because most everyone saw them on the SD feed. Now that there are more of "us" around, sponsors are probably taking notice.
Or perhaps the President of the hospital group that sponsors many of KMTV's drop-ins got a new HDTV for Christmas, and he noticed that his expensive little blurbs weren't there, and he called his good bud the G.M. of KMTV, and that's how this got added. Never mind that the already-annoying time & temp things were now causing a REAL BIG annoyance with the HD picture!!
That, to some, is "progress."

My inside source said they found out that when the CSR asked why and were they were going about 60% went to Dishnetwork 30% to Direct TV and 10% went with over the air and just basic cable.
Curious, how many is "a lot" ?

I'm guessing more than they expected. :p
JoelWNelson 01-14-07, 09:57 PM I just saw the first sign of HD overlay graphics/crawlers yesterday. It had a lot of bugs, but it was the first time locally-originating content spanned the entire width of my HDTV screen.
KLKN-DT ran an Amber Alert message yesterday evening. Their EAS system appears to support HD as it spanned the entire width while the actual programming (ESPN+ basketball) was in 4:3. However, they had a little glitch with it... once the scrolling bar came up, sound was gone for 3 minutes.
One step forward, two back...
KETV has had an annoying weather graphic in top right corner of HD stream before that I've ntoiced.
That is annoying, but not as annoying as switching to SD for an overlay then switching back to HD like KMTV has been doing - might have to switch to KOLN even though they don't have DD 5.1 sound :(

The cable operators say the channels should be free because they are available for free via off-air antennas. But the problem is that they are not free for the cable end user. I wish I could take a free commodity and sell it for a profit outside of the intended distribution method.
Also from the article, Mediacom says Sinclair is asking for too much money and should agree to the arbitration. It sounds like Mediacom is in someone's pocket.

Also from the article, Mediacom says Sinclair is asking for too much money and should agree to the arbitration. It sounds like Mediacom is in someone's pocket.Actually, the allegation is that Sinclair is getting "bounty payments" from DirecTV, and indeed much of Sinclair's advertising on the matter is geared primarily toward getting customers switched from Mediacom to DirecTV, with only passing references to getting the signal over-the-air.
So far, though, what Sinclair has been doing has been upheld by one federal court and the FCC Media Bureau, but Mediacom is appealing to the full FCC.
But this is perhaps the only area in which a Sinclair station can beat a Hearst-Argyle one. Geez, Hearst can't even bring itself to take KETV's analog off Cox, for cryin' out loud!

But when the free item is controlled for distribution...
I guess if COX thinks they can transmit free OTA, I should be able to make copies of popular broadcast TV shows and sell them on Ebay.

HiDefHusker 01-15-07, 11:15 PM The cable companies and the local stations (should) have a symbiotic relationship. The local stations get their programming and advertising viewed by a bunch of people that don't want to have an antenna. The cable companies get to offer a seamless package of programming. It's a win-win for both parties. Unless one of the parties gets greedy. *sigh*
ajwees41 01-16-07, 02:25 AM You can't really believe that COX is looking out for you.
I meant if they have to pay for a signal other people can get for free they will have to pass it on to thier customers.
If the stations charged to much to Cox and Mediacom and they passed the charge on to there customers they would loose customers.

tinantlu 01-17-07, 03:22 PM noob here, but I was wonder if anyone could give me information on getting the "local" channels (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, ect.) in HD on DirectTV. I signed up, but now am extremely disappointed in there service, only getting a few channels in HD and none of the locals. Is OTA the only option? If so, I am frustrated by them, as I specifically asked them and they said locals in HD were included. Thanks in advance

BrianHurley 01-20-07, 10:03 PM Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. I'm hoping someone here can answer a question I have. I found a couple posts on AVS and on other forums about this issue, but I haven't come across a good explaination yet.
Two weeks ago I purchased my first HDTV - a Pioneer PDP-5070HD. It's a fantastic plasma display and many HD programs look simply stunning. I'm currently using an antenna to receive OTA HD broadcasts and I pipe the digital audio to my reciever. I've noticed that there seems to be a slight audio delay on NBC (WOWT) shows. It seems to be almost nonexistent except for on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. It's barely noticeable on Leno, but extremely obvious on Conan. I do not notice an audio delay on any show from any other station. I was wondering if this is a national NBC problem, local NBC affiliate (WOWT) problem or something on my side?

ScottChez 01-22-07, 03:47 PM Yes for both Direct TV and Dish Network OTA is the only option for Local HD.
But that is not a bad thing. . . .
I get more Local HD over the air than with Cox as I also get the Two Lincoln HDs (CBS and ABC) and Iowas PBS HD.
Plus the OTA HD is at a Full Bandwidth so the picture is perfect.
That makes Two of each for CBS, ABC, and PBS. For non prime time the all show different local shows.
Both Direct TV and Dish are saying they will have the Local HD up on the Sat this Summer.
I hear the contracts have already been signed for all stations for both Direct and Dish as they built it into the contract they already have for the NOn HD local they they have uplinked now.
For Local HD get a Silver Sensor or something similar and a 7777 amp if the Ant does not have it. Then put it in the atic and point it kind of west northwest till they all come in good.

dfunk44 01-25-07, 06:45 PM Anyone tried the Samsung HD Tuner (DTB-H260F) in Lincoln yet??
FYI:
Tonight Iowa Public Television began crawling a message announcing that they will be testing a digital multicast channel beginning on Feb. 1, which would be next Thursday. The crawl said that regular IPTV programming would air only on the analog channel during this time.
The crawl also told viewers to check IPTV.org for information, but so far I have yet to see any.
(The crawl was seen on the Waterloo, Iowa IPTV station but probably ran on all of them, at least on the "-2" subchannel which simulcasts IPTV analog.)
ScottChez 01-26-07, 10:20 PM what in the world do they mean by Digital multicast? Digital of the normal analog channel or some new feed.
I have been telling them from day one there -2 sub channel is a waist of space and they should fill it with something else like with nebraska pbs does or better yet do what one of the Minnestota sub channels does and at least play weather radar and noaa weather and radio sound for Iowa farmers.
johnwcookjr 01-27-07, 01:28 AM Why on a Thursday night, DOH, there goes Red Dwarf. I hope this isn't permanent or it's just a local Waterloo PBS event.
ScottChez 01-27-07, 09:07 PM Any one having troubles with KETV HD. Seems at times (like again today before 7pm) they must be on there backup HDTV tower as I get terrible multipath- almost like they are broadcasting from down town.
Maybe its just the weather or me. I am not sure.
what in the world do they mean by Digital multicast? Digital of the normal analog channel or some new feed.
I have been telling them from day one there -2 sub channel is a waist of space and they should fill it with something else like with nebraska pbs does or better yet do what one of the Minnestota sub channels does and at least play weather radar and noaa weather and radio sound for Iowa farmers.Unfortunately without the -2 you can't watch any of IPTV's regular programming without going back to (ACK!!!) analog ... which I guess we'll have to do Thursday as they test this new multicast thing. As it stands, 32-1 and 32-2 (at least I think that's what their Council Bluffs channel is) rarely simulcast each other. -1 airs mostly the national PBSHD feed full time except for some local programs. I'm told that's partly because the digital part of their master control isn't fully developed yet.
And no, I don't see them doing Nebraska PBS on -2; that's what the Nebraska PBS station is for.
BTW, Iowa Public Television is a statewide service originating in suburban Des Moines, so what airs in Des Moines also airs in Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Red Oak, Waterloo-Cedar Rapids, etc. (That's why you see severe weather crawls for parts of Iowa you probably never knew existed.)
ScottChez 01-28-07, 09:18 PM I did not mean do Nebraska PBS on -2, but do like what they do.
Nebraska PBS has the other 3 to 4 PBS feeds mixed into there sub channels. There is a Kids only feed, a DYI type of feed and a business feed. PBS has many networks now. I dont remember the names, but there is enough content for 4 full time channels. 5 if you include the local programming and educational recordings for schools.
Since the HD feed takes a lot of bandwidth Nebraska PBS does HD only at Primte time 7- to 10. [[[[ I would rather have a full time HD feed 24x7]]]]
In the daytime they run 3 channels, at nite they do 1 of the 3 plus the one HD feed.
In Minnestota they at times do 4 feeds with one being WEATHER.
So my point is
there are lots of combos and options, just hope Iowa PBS does the right thing for what the viewers (and the people donating want).
Right now I do not think they are doing a very good job with there HD and sub channels as all we got is HD and one Sd and the Sd is what we already get on analog.
More would donate if the needed programing was there.

ScottChez 02-05-07, 11:53 PM Did Cox just lower there rates? I got something in the mail today, $26 for basic cable and ONE digital tier. Still had to rent the box for $4.95. Nothing about a 2 or 3 month temp price either.
Did I miss understand it?
Seems close to the Dishnetwork rate. Are they trying to get everyone over to Digital so they can shut down channels 50 to 80 of the Analogs so they will have more room for HD, thats what I would do anyway.

Cable customers frustrated with change
By JEFF KORBELIK / Lincoln Journal Star
Saturday, Feb 10, 2007 - 12:07:15 am CST
Donna Adams turned on her television at 2:54 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
Unable to bring up the recorded programs on her digital video recorder (DVR), she opted to watch live TV instead.
She pushed the button on her remote and her TV responded — eight minutes later.
She timed it.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, her DVR crashed after 10 viewing minutes.
Sound familiar?
It does to Tony Young, who continues to have problems with the search engines on his high-definition DVR and digital cable box.
Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don’t.
“You get used to it after a while,” said Young, who pays about $100 a month for his TV service. “But getting used to a mediocre product is a little bit … no, it’s incredibly frustrating.
“We don’t have another option for competition. This is forced on you.”
Adams and Young are two of many Time Warner Cable digital cable customers disgruntled with the company’s decision to change its channel guide last fall, dropping the contracted Passport in favor of company-created Navigator.
The change affected 46,000 digital cable subscribers. Time Warner has 110,000 total television subscribers in Southeast Nebraska. (***note inserted: Lincoln's population is approx. 225,000, unsure of home #'s***)
Complaints ranged from the guide itself — ugly graphics, incomplete information, etc. — to problems with cable boxes after the software was loaded into them, causing some subscribers to reboot one or more times a day.
“We know it needs to get better,” said Beth Scarborough, president of Time Warner’s Nebraska division. “Comments are not falling on deaf ears.”
Time Warner has a “war room” set up in its offices at 16th Street and Old Cheney Road, where engineers, technicians and customer support staff work on solving problems.
So how did Time Warner reach this point in the first place?
In a letter sent to subscribers last summer, Scarborough said the cable guide was changing to make it compatible with other software programs coming down the line, such as caller ID for those who have Time Warner’s phone and digital cable TV service.
What Scarborough failed to mention in her letter was Nebraska was the first Time Warner division to introduce Navigator.
Time Warner is the nation’s second-largest cable company with more than 18 million subscribers.
“My brother in Kansas City called to say they were getting Navigator and wanted to know how we liked it,” said subscriber Kevin Thierolf, who spends about $100 a month .
He didn’t have a favorable report. One of his biggest complaints was technical — his box was no longer compatible to the DVI cables he used for his HDTV.
“I know you can’t anticipate how everybody is going to use it,” Thierolf said. “It’s hard. But there were some obvious things.”
Such as listing whether a show is a repeat or not (now fixed) or having the fast-forward function revert back a second or two after it stopped, the way Passport did.
Scarborough said Time Warner would not have introduced the software if the company didn’t believe it was ready to go. It introduced the new guide to its employees before rolling it out to subscribers.
“Our experience at that point was that it was good to go,” she said. “It was good enough to go to market with.”
Instead, the system paled in comparison with its predecessor. It prompted Scarborough to write another letter last month thanking digital and DVR customers for their patience.
“… the conversion was a highly complex exercise and was not without some inconvenience, re-educations, recalibration of settings, and for some, even downright disappointment.”
Time Warner continues to tinker with the system and urges customers having problems with the software or their boxes to call customer service.
“We knew it was going to be a challenge to implement,” Scarborough said. “Maybe we didn’t position it in the right way. We’re sorry for that. It wasn’t our intention to deceive.”
Still, it may take a while for Time Warner to get back into the good graces of customers such as Adams, who spends $200 a month with Time Warner on TV, phone and Internet service.
“They’ve lost my loyalty,” Adams said. “We wouldn’t tolerate anything else in our house performing like this. We’re stuck, and that’s what’s frustrating.”

Thoughts:
I get the feeling that TW knew it had a defective product but went to market anyway
Why do unsatisfied customers not consider switching content providers? Has TW brainwashed them with billing advertisements into thinking there are no other alternatives?

It was only some what correct. Just not for Omaha.
The Source is at Cox Corporate, they decided not to roll out the new DVR rates in all Markets.
Omaha did not get it because they are renting DVRs like crazy as is. In fact there have been shortages and they had to put limits in place (for a while you could not have Two).
Example
Check out Cox.com Arizon. Notice they do not list the DVR price. It is much lower than Omaha.
There was also a published news story supporting this decrease in price for that market. I cant find it in Google anymore, the que does not go back that far

Did anyone else have a problem with the last 30 seconds Lost in HD last night? It just seemed to kind of freeze. This was off the air via 3 different receivers, Dish VIP622, MyHD MDP-130, and a FusionHDTV5 so it wasn't a receiver problem. I'm just wondering if it was a signal problem at my end, an Omaha KETV problem, or an ABC problem.
The end was fine on the SD recording my Dish 625 made from the Omaha SD uplink.

keenkahm 02-15-07, 04:24 PM Hello all, I've only been registered for a short time, but have been reading this forum much longer. I finally bought a new Samsung DLP and want to get OTA HD until I get the whole satellite/cable box situation figured out. With the zip code 68516 and no real obstacles (maybe a tree or two) what are some suggestions for best results. I'm pretty sure I need an outdoor antenna, but will try an indoor one first. Also, I watched a cnet video about outdoor HD antenna hook-up and he said to ground the antenna to protect from surges. Instead of doing this, can I hook the antenna co-ax into a surge protector (Monster, etc) then run a new co-ax into the TV. I'd rather not be outside looking for grounds, running extra wire, etc. in this bitter cold winter we're having. I really appreciate the time some of you take to respond to so many different question on this site, TRUE HEROES!!!

With CBS it all rolls down hill. . . . .
Yes they do not not mention KMTV. But once CBS starts charging extra for the HD feed you know they are going to see the extra revenue and start charging all CBS affiliates for it next thing you know is KETV is removed.
Why would not they not change some while charging others?
I would not be surprised of the KMTV owners are already talking to Cox about this in case things change.
I am also hearing that Iowa PBS is now requesting that COX add there 32.1/36.1 HDTV feed and there 32.2 or 36.2 Digital feed them or they will file a FCC and a PBS network complaint requesting that all PBS feeds be pull including Nebraska PBS under the national contract terms.
-->Similar story on DBS not Cox here: http://www.tvpredictions.com/pbs021207.htm
The point of the news article is things are getting bad. We lost ABC HD here in Omaha, more and more stations across the county will start to charge and cause it to be dropped over pricing. HD Stations all over the country are being removed over pricing contracts.
The point is to contact the FCC now, Im sure most can agree there should be no extra charges for things that are free over the air? I think we can agree on this point. The only government bodies that cant change this is the FCC and Congress. Congress is busy debating war things right now. That leaves the FCC. We need to at least ask them to stop this HD Price war. Free over the air should be free for all. No one should be able to make a profit on it (that includes cable) and everyone should be able to get it (remember life line cable?)

However, just because I can pick up a copy of The Reader free from a news rack in downtown Omaha does NOT give me the right to take a bunch of copies and resell them for two bucks a pop unless The Reader gives me their specific permission. Same goes for broadcast signals. And even though lifeline may still be regulated, surely the "regulated" rate still allows for at least some profit, just as regulated electric rates.
Either way, the cable company profits, in part, from the broadcasters' product, and the broadcasters are asserting themselves just as the law allows. Given that satellite and other competing technologies already pay, there will no doubt be more of this. And the FCC still has to act within the law Congress wrote for them -- they can't just do whatever they want or what you may want them to do.
That may not be popular on these boards, but it's the way it is.
ScottChez 02-18-07, 11:22 PM Thats what we are all saying, lets change the Law. Changing the Law starts by contacting your congressman and the FCC.

Using the same analogy - what is Cox's argument? Do they have one?

Well, I don't necessarily believe this argument is clear.
IMO, whoever picked-up the "Reader" actually owns it. If someone is willing to pay for a higher resale for the "Reader"delivered to their home, so be it. Hence, the customer willing to pay for the Reader is willing to pay. I believe this perspective leans toward a free-market economy. I see no reason for further regulation by the government.

Bugger
I was hoping the transmitter had problems, but if you are getting FOX that strong, I have problems. It looks like an amplifier need to be wired to the antenna.
Also, could I bother you for another question. I found one local store conveying the location of the Fox antenna in Gretna. However, this was not listed at the potentially more authoritative www.antennaweb.org site. Do you know the location of the Fox HD Antenna(s)?
Thanks much for responding.

Actually, it is clear if you read carefully enough. I might be able to get away with that with one or two copies, but not for a whole stack of them on a regular basis without them asking questions.
johnwcookjr 02-21-07, 11:48 AM LOST - Last week, yes I did have break up problems right at the end of the program, a check of signal strength during the freeze showed good signal strength and that my receiver was locked to the program, I'd say it was a headend problem at KETV.
FCC - Thanks Scott for bringing that article to light. I wrote the chairman stating that I approved of his hands off attitude torwards this private industry battle and further stated all this will wash out in the end with consumers voting with their wallets as apposed to wasting time in congress/FCC.
VIP622 - I can state that it's been painless since I installed the new receiver several months back. Biggest problem we have is keeping the kids from using up all the available disc space. The OTA reception is superb. With the exception of the infield hand held HD-Cams (noisy macro-blocking) Foxs coverage of last weekends Daytona 500 was great, the finish in HD was awesome. Thanks KPTM.
QUESTION For you COX fans: I've a friend considering a jump into the HDTV market but he's concerned (and rightfully so) about the weak performance of the upconvertors installed into the current crop of digital flat panels. Most if not all of the available flat panels don't upconvert well creating digital artifacts during motion on screen. How well does the current COX HD-STB w/hard drive recorder upconvet 480i material to 1080i?
Thanks in advance, John
David Ellis 02-21-07, 01:03 PM Actually, it is clear if you read carefully enough. I might be able to get away with that with one or two copies, but not for a whole stack of them on a regular basis without them asking questions.
I read it very carefully. The analogy is decent, but remains imperfect. One very clear reason is that creating additional copies of the Reader places a burden on the original producer.
I haven't read the FCC rules on this issue, and they may indeed . I convey my sentiment on the philosophical basis for a free market economy and what is right or wrong. For my discussion, the "Reader" is a fictitous "widget".
If the consumer is willing to pay more for a "widget" delivered to his/her home, the so be it. In this case the entity (aka Cox Cable) providing the widget delivery service doesn't cause ANY burden for the original producer. As such, I see no decent reason for the FCC to constrain the delivery entity.
On the slippery-slope, obtaining the widget certainly isn't an entitlement or a right. It isn't something consumers get for free. Consumers already pay to obtain it. They buy TV's, antenna's, and electricity to obtain the signal. Some consumers pay more for bigger TVs, and more for really cool audio systems to accompany them. At this point consumers might even decide to obtain a better signal source or a better menu system and actually pay for this Herein enters the widget delivery service.
For me currently... my Panasonic 720p Plasma and Winegard UHF Antenna are working VERY good, and the Cox cable bill will soon become pleasantly smaller :) .

ScottChez 02-21-07, 10:19 PM I had Cox now I have Dish.
Dish and Direct TV are both in contract talks for SAT HD Local carrage. Both plan to have Local HD by the end of the year, so they say (they are always late on delivery).
Already I hear the talks are not going good for either Dish or Direct as TWO of the locals want even MORE money for Local HD carrage. What effects cable and Local HD also effect Direct TV and Dish in the end. This has got to stop so write congress and the FCC please.
I fear that someday the Locals will want so much money for there HD feeds that no one will be able to get it all the networks on one system. Ratings for the locals non prime time and non news time slots goes down every year due to the hundreds of cable channels. They are trying to make up the profits buy charging Dish, Direct, and Cox more.
JoelWNelson 02-24-07, 10:29 PM Hello all, I've only been registered for a short time, but have been reading this forum much longer.
Using a simple 24" rod antenna, I can get KLKN, KOLN, KUON, KPTM, and KXVO (plus all subchannels) in 68503. KETV, WOWT, and KMTV come in but less reliably. WOWT is probably the best of those three.
This is just a simple antenna on the ground floor of an older house near 33rd and Vine.
You should be fine with an indoor antenna for the Lincoln and Gretna stations. To get 20/22/45 (ABC/NBC/CBS) out of Omaha, you may need an aerial antenna pointed to the northeast. That may not result in good reception on KOLN and KLKN, however.

I live just north of Gretna and have trouble getting KPTM, getting just a 60% signal. There is frequent pixellation and periodic loss of signal lock. My theory is that the signal is too strong here, as there is terrible ghosting on the analog channel. At another location in Lincoln (zip code 68503, near 33rd and Vine) I get about 85% on KPTM and KXVO. The analog signal is nearly clear as well.
The KPTM and KXVO transmitter is located about a mile and a half south of the Nebraska Crossing mall, or south of the I-80 Gretna exit (432). I have heard other reports of KPTM/KXVO, both analog and digital, having generally poor reception in areas north and east of the transmitter site (including much of Sarpy and Douglas Counties). Lincoln appears to get better signal coverage.

Hopefully it will stabilize before football season begins. Perhaps the Minnesota Vikings will have another average season :( .
Is there a good source to read about the signal from channel 42? And are HD transmitters directional? It appears that folks from Lincoln have a relatively solid signal, but folks in Omaha are questionable.
Dave
nebugeater 02-26-07, 09:36 PM Yes for both Direct TV and Dish Network OTA is the only option for Local HD.
SCOTT
Where are you located to get all this OTA? I am in Gretna and would hope that I can get the same in HD. Just bought my first HD TV and it will be delivered on Thursday.

KPTM-DT has been stable since they came on line. I'd assume Saturday's problem was technical in nature however once they found and repaired the problem their signal strength on my equipment appeared nominal as always. Were located in Papillion.
I did watch the 500 once they came back on line, I didn't see any problems during the coverage.

JoelWNelson 02-27-07, 07:51 PM Is there a good source to read about the signal from channel 42? And are HD transmitters directional? It appears that folks from Lincoln have a relatively solid signal, but folks in Omaha are questionable.
Dave
Short answer: Yes, digital antennas can be directional.
Long answer: KPTM analog is nondirectional. KPTM digital started with special temporary authority to broadcast a directional signal but has since gone nondirectional as well. Even when analog was the only thing, there were reception issues in Omaha. Channel 24 (KKAZ) solved those problems in some areas, but right now it just relays 42.2. Perhaps when KKAZ goes digital, it will relay both 42.1 and 42.2 and improve coverage in Omaha.
KXVO analog is directional, and the KXVO digital special temporary authority was directional. When KXVO-DT channel 38 went full-power, it was with a nondirectional transmitter (according to the FCC). As was the case with KPTM, KXVO had an Omaha repeater, KAZO 57. That's now Omaha's Azteca affiliate. Perhaps KAZO digital will relay both the CW and Azteca in Omaha, when KAZO-LP becomes KAZO-LD.
According to the FCC, KKAZ-LD channel 23 has a construction permit. KAZO-LD channel 18 remains in the application phase (CP not yet granted -- perhaps due to proximity to KYNE-DT 17).
I don't expect to see either make the switch until 2009, but we can cross our fingers and hope that those two stations will remain on the air and improve KPTM/KXVO reception in the Omaha area.
Check http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/tvq.html for more info.

hellerbrewing 03-02-07, 09:55 AM Ok, I am sorry if someone has already posted on this.
I am currently using COX and the only QAM channels I can get are NBC (6-1) and NET (40-5). I tried OTA with my little Terk powered antenna and I could get ABC, CBS and a couple NET stations. I just got a new TV and this is my first venture into HD. I am noticing that on NBC-HD that I am getting Diagonal lines going through some of the solid backgrounds. These go from top right to bottom left It is only there occasionally, but you can really see it on the purple (?) background between shows where the stars of the next show are standing infront of that big puprle background. Is this magnetic interference on my cable line? I am hoping that it is not something with my TV, but since I don't see it on NET, and I don't see it on the background when I am doing a channel scan or something, I am guessing it is not. Does anyone else see these?
Also, are there no more QAM channels with cox than these 2? I was thinking I aould be able to get at least a few more.
johnwcookjr 03-03-07, 07:11 PM hellbrew
Is NBC-HD the only channel you're seeing this noise pattern on?
Are you watching NBC-HD via your TVs internal 8VSB tuner?
Other HD locals from your TVs internal 8VSB tuner are free of noise?
Out of curiousity if you don't mind my asking what make and model is your TV?
If questions 1, 2 and 3 above are all yes I'd say you may have a problem with your set. :o
If I have a chance I'll tune into KMTV-DT and see if I notice anything this weekend. I don't recall seeing anything like this on local HD in the past.
Regards, John
hellerbrewing 03-03-07, 09:14 PM John,
I have the Pansonic TH-42PX60U. Just got it and am very happy so far. I only see the lines on NBC-HD (WOWT), I don't KETV or KMTV unless I go OTA. I am going to go this route aometime down the road after I get wiring laid and can get the antenna in the attic. I think the lines that I am seeing are on the NBC generated backrounds, they don't seem to be in the same spot all the time and they are on the SD NBC channel as well. I don't see them on any other channel and I hooked up my 360 and watched a dvd last night. Everything seems to be fine. I think it is either something I have not paid attention to until now on NBCs backgrounds or it is some interference in the cable line. If it was caused by the TV, I think it would be on all the channels and be stationary.
As far as the QAM channels, are these (6-1, and 40-5) the only clear QAM channels that cox broadcasts at this point? If there are others, what channels are they, maybe my tuner is not picking them up.

Brad Smith 03-11-07, 05:47 PM KPTM continues to have issues flipping the HDTV switch. How come they can't figure out how to turn HD on anymore? They didn't used to have this problem.
hellerbrewing 03-14-07, 05:36 PM Ok, I just switched to OTA through the mediacenter. Right now I have a Philips amplified antenna that I picked up an NFM so I could get my tuner working before my silversensor gets here (today). Currently I have the antenna in my basement window and I can get decent signal on NBC ABC and CBS. I am close to 72nd and harrison in omaha and am wondering if anyone in this part of town can get KPTM HD. I can get the standard KPTM from upstairs in the bedroom with my terk TV5, so you think if I put a big omnidirectional antenna (thinking the antenna's direct DB4 or DB8) I'll be able to get fox and some of the PBS stations that I am missing?
David Ellis 03-14-07, 06:18 PM I have some experience with a directional antenna. This might be useful.
My first Antenna was a $65 radio shack VHF/UHF attic unit. It was okay and I managed to pick-up ABC, NBC, CBS and a few PBS stations in HD, but no FOX.
My second antenna is a Winegard UHF 9032 antenna that should be much better. Indeed I get a stronger signal from ABC, NBC, & CBS, but Fox remains elusive. The best I am able to obtain is a pixellated picture. This is a major bummer since Fox will be necessary to watch the Minnesota Vikings get defeated this fall  . I was able to get the WB, but this was spotty. Obviously I was still able to get the PBS stations too.
I am really not sure a big whopping antenna will help immensely. This is primarily because they are quite directional. From you location, Fox is Southwest and the PBS is generally East ( I think ).
But, a better omnidirectional antenna with an amplifier could be the "ticket". This is the next thing I am going to try.
Strangely, it appears the folks in Lincoln are able to aim a very directional antenna at Gretna for FOX , and also snag ABC, CBS, and NBC along the same axis. I am frustrated that I can't get Fox in Bellevue. BUT, the transmitter may be having problems.

hellerbrewing 03-15-07, 10:10 AM Another Vikings fan huh? I think we are gluttons for punishment. Just have to get used to saying "there's always next year."
I guess I wasn't aware of what direction fox was coming from. When I put in my address on antennaweb.org, FOXHD doesn't even show up on the list, but when I put in just the zip code it puts my location around 90th and Q and FOXHD shows up. Anyway, I was thinking that the DB8 would be a omnidirectional antenna, here's (http://www.antennasdirect.com/DB8_HD_Antenna.html) a link for it. I think putting it in the attic would get me far enough above most of the neighboring houses, as well as my steel siding, to give me a decent signal. I'll just need to get some network cable run upstairs to hook my HDhomerun up to. I have been wanting to get cabling up there for a while now, it is just not going to be easy.

With the new owners of KMTV spending tons of extra money on KMTV action news and the 4 live remote trucks I would think they could afford a Sub channel. Maybe make it a 24 hour Sport or news channel or something?
Come on KM 3 get with the digital age. We know you read this sometimes. . . .
Please a channel 3.2 and do something useful with it.
Scott, are you POSITIVE other CBS affils are able to carry the other NCAA games on their sub-channels? I was under the impression CBS did not want that to happen. I'd like to see a link to a CBS affil that's carrying more than one game.
Edit: I did find the Kansas City affiliate is carrying two games on their different sub-channels: http://www.kctv5.com/Global/story.asp?S=6234351
The Chicago affiliate did not appear to be carrying more than one game.
The New York affiliate only appeared to be carrying one game at a time:

ScottChez 03-16-07, 11:47 AM The NCAA games multi carry is hit or miss.
The thing I wanted to get across is KMTV could not do it if they wanted to because they are behind in technology. They dont have the the Digitial Sub channel set up.
It sure would be nice if we had multiple games.

I agree on that! :D
dfunk44 03-17-07, 09:17 AM Finally got my hands on a Samsung DTB-H260F set top box. Still need to pick up an antenna. Will begin install this Saturday. :)

 Okay
dfunk44,
I got the Samsung HTB-H260F (http://www.*******.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=34596) from here. Order Tuesday and it arrived on Thursday, using regular shipping.
I picked up an inexpensive Phillips antenna, and I get all of the Omaha channels with the antenna sitting inside a cabinet under the TV. :p

Dave,
This is the Phillips Antenna (http://electrical.hardwarestore.com/15-54-antennas/philips-indoor-antenna-116226.aspx) I picked up from NFM. I'm in Bellevue near 25th & Fairview (top of the hill).

David Ellis 03-21-07, 08:16 AM Thanks Ed,
I am going to try that Antenna. It's darn cheap, and maybe the amplifiction will cure my problems.
I am getting most of the channels, but really don't want to run amplification to my Winegard 9032 in the attic. This would involve considerable effort.
Presumably you are getting the FOX channel too?
BTW, we are a stones-throw away from each other :) . I'm at the bottom of the hill towards Fairview school at 2103 Pilgrim Drive.
Thanks for the scoop on this antenna.
Dave
Ronald L M 03-25-07, 03:24 PM I have noticed watching the Ncaa tourney on Kmtv-dt on Cox 805 the action is freezing or shuttering, it happens every so often, I have a ota hd tuner and Kmtv-dt ota is fine, I also was over my in-laws on Friday and they also have this problem.
ajwees41 03-26-07, 05:25 AM We might get ota digital on our cable boxes.

440forpower 04-01-07, 10:43 AM Hello, new to ota hd so I was just curious. Is anyone getting the Omaha hd stations in Lincoln? If so what type of antenna are you using? I can get the Lincoln stations but none of the Omaha ones. Thanks

I use two antenna's from our house near Pioneer Park, both in my attic. One is a large directional antenna that points towards the Omaha-area stations, and the other is a small directional antenna that points towards Utica (Channels 8 and 10). I combine the signals from each of these into one coax, and run it to a nearby 10 dB amp in the attic. From there a single coax goes to the basement to a distribution panel, which then sends it to the rest of the house. On each of our 3 HDTV's, we get 92-100% signal strength from the Omaha stations (3, 6, 7, 12, 15, and 42), and 77-85% from the Utica broadcast towers (8 and 10).
antennaweb-dot-org can show you which direction and how far away each tv station is from your address in Lincoln. It will also recommend which type of antenna to buy based on this information.
Some have reported good luck with the Silver Sensor desktop antenna in Lincoln as well. Also, Zager TV in Lincoln specializes in antenna installation.
Hope this helps.

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but I was wondering if you could do this. How do you combine the signal from two antennas into one line?
PAULSTORM 04-02-07, 10:07 AM 440, You may want to check out the batwinged antenna from Dish Network. It wasn't cheap but I've had good results with it in Kearney. I think it's like 24" across and costs around $165 installed (when I bought mine a few yrs ago).
