View Full Version : Omaha / Lincoln, NE - HDTV
seward sker 01-06-08, 09:08 PM I almost was in your same situation when I made the switch to Directv. Luckily, I had bought several times from my dealer and he knew how important the receiving the local OTA HD signals was. He got w/ his regional mgr to locate a different box that had the antenna input. I was very glad he located one because I don't have a digital tuner on my TV since it was one of the early HD compatible sets.
Well, a little hard work with DirecTV has paid off. I sent an email to the customer service department straight off of the DirecTV web site, and I got in touch with a rep. A few emails later, and DirecTV shipped me an HR20 to swap out with my HR21 so I can plug my antenna for local channels directly into the HR20.
So now that I have that issue resolved, I'm trying to figure out the best route to go with the antenna. I started by trying a $25 indoor antenna from Radio Shack, and had decent success. I was able to pull in all Lincoln channels, but have had spotty success with Omaha channels. My plan is to return the current antenna to Radio Shack and look into a nicer indoor antenna. I'm trying to avoid running wires for a new rooftop antenna at all costs, due to the setup of my house and my basement TV location.
Any Lincolnites on here have success with an indoor antenna? If so, let me know.
JoelWNelson 01-07-08, 10:28 AM I'm in Lincoln "part time" (usually in Gretna) -- at 33rd and Vine I can get the Lincoln digital channels well, as well as WOWT, KPTM, and KXVO with an indoor antenna. KETV and KMTV require antenna amplification, special orientation, and even with that reception is more spotty. On the other hand these two channels are less essential considering they are essentially duplicated with KLKN and KOLN.
If you're in Seward (as your login handle indicates) you will likely need an amplified indoor antenna for any Omaha channels beyond Fox and CW. (The Terk TV-5 UHF/VHF bow-tie works pretty well for me; I can get KLKN-DT in Gretna very well using that antenna...) After Feb. 2009 the Lincoln locals (8, 10, and 12) are going back to their VHF assignments... while not the best VHF antenna on the market, it should at least be adequate since you are not that far from 8 and 10.
ScottChez 01-07-08, 01:17 PM DirecTV no longer does HD Lite now that they are on there new MPeg4 Sats.
"Unless you physically can't install an antenna why would anyone want to pay DirecTV for HDLite versions of the Omaha locals when you can get the locals full 19.2mbs spectrum off air for free?"
The only HD Lite channels are the old HD channels still on MPeg2 like HDNet.
They will soon be moved to MPEG4.
All new locals are now also on MPEG4 and the new SATs.
HD Lite what they did last year because they did not have MPEG4. MPEG4 has about triple the compression rate so they can double the quality to match that of Cox. No one can tell the difference anymore.
Plus if you want the FULL Bandwidth you can still do the Free over the Air HD channels with rabbit ears.

Well that is just the most fantastic news I've seen in awhile. Thanks for the heads up!
Any update on the status of local HD for Lincoln and Omaha for both DirecTV and Dish?
Also, any chance of someone in the Lincoln/Hastings/Kearney receiving Omaha HD local channels? It's my understanding that some of the Hastings/Kearney channels have no plans on going HD so obviously no chance of getting those in HD over Dish or DirecTV...

any one know if the HDMI port is active? I was looking at this TV http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2191143&sku=S452-2300 and wanted to make sure it was active before I bought the HDMI cable.
Thanks

We had a Cox 6416 and it failed, then they gave us a 3416 and it failed, then they gave us our current 6416 and it's worked fine for a long time. For all three models -- including the 3416 -- they've been connected to the TV via an HDMI cable.

I live in Lincoln, and have been testing out a couple different antennas in order to obtain Omaha HD stations. I had a RadioShack indoor model that I paid about $25 for. I was able to pull in the FOX feed, but 6.1, 7.1 proved to be hit and miss. I have since returned that model and have a Terk indoor antenna that I bought off amazon.com on the way. I'm hoping for better results with this model.
RexxRacerX 01-14-08, 03:23 PM Hi all,
I have an OTA antenna question as well. I switched from Cox to Direct TV a few months ago and have been receiving local HD OTA since. I'm using a Phillips 50dB amplified indoor antenna, and have limited success pulling in OTA signals. I can receive the following without issue, putting the antenna anywhere in the house:
3-1
6-1
6-2
7-1
7-2
I can most of the time receive the following by putting the antenna in 1 location, and not using the amplification at all:
15-1
15-2
26-1
26-2
26-3
42-1
42-2
I have never received any of the following, no matter what I've tried:
26-5
36-1
36-2
My main concern is the sporadic Fox signal. Until recently, I didn't really care about the Fox signal only being SD, but recently I have decided that I really want it in HD. (Bowls, Playoffs, Superbowl, Terminator, Nascar) Their tower is located near Gretna, W-SW of my location, but I can only receive their signal with the antenna in 1 location. (and I mean if I move it one inch in any direction from here, it won't come in at all) Oddly, this one location is facing dead west, and I discovered it by givig up on dragging the antenna around for 2 hours and depositing it here! In this one location, it is very subject to loss of signal and pixelation, and seems to work better at night than during the day.
I am in extreme NW Omaha, very near Bennington. I have LOS to the 72nd and Crowne Point towers, but not so much to Gretna. To compount my dilemna, the main room where I am trying this is located on the NW side of the house, facing away from both locations. It does not appear to be an issue to the 72nd location, but sure is to Gretna.
What is everyone else doing for their OTA signals? Is there a solution other than mounting an outdoor antenna or attic antenna for receiving signals? I know Omaha is on the list for HD over satellite, but I'm not betting it will be done in time for a lot of these events.
Thanks for any tips and info you have to offer.

I am in the 156th and Maple area - so not too far from you. I also have that same Phillips antenna. I did have a Zenith "Silver Sensor", which worked better than the Phillips, but it broke and I have not been able to fix or replace it. My first recommendation is to try to get a Silver Sensor if you can find it somewhere.
I have an east exposure, so have direct LOS to the three major station towers - those are no problem. I had the same experience as you with Fox (KPTM). The only way I can get my indoor antenna to pick up FOX is to put the antenna outside on my front porch, and run a long cable back inside to my TV downstairs. As you mention, the tower is in the Gretna area, and much more difficult (at least for me) to pick it up. I have no problem getting NETV from my basement walkout exposure to the East. Bottom line for me, and probably for you, an attic antenna is the only real solution to get better reception for all the OTA channels you want. An indoor antenna is just not going to do the job without constantly moving it around, although the SS will do better than the Phillips for you.
I toyed with the idea of switching to Direct TV, but in the end I decided to stay with Cox and upgrade to the HDTV box and package. While I agree with all here who have been critical of COX and their slowness in offering more HD, I think you have to consider the "convenience" factor. I am happy with my decision. I have avoided installing an attic antenna and don't have to mess with my indoor antenna setup any more to get locals. I get all the locals with no problems. I don't have to have separate boxes for all my other non-HD tvs. While Cox does not have all the HDTV channels of DirectTV, they do have most of the channels I watch. I wish they had NFL network in HD, but it will probably be coming in the next year or so.
Everyone has their own opinion, but to me, the convenience factor won out. Hope this helps.
RexxRacerX 01-15-08, 01:45 PM Thanks for the info Zabo, good stuff. I've voiced my opinion of Cox louder than most on here in the past few months, and I agree totally that they have the market cornered on the convenience factor. There is so much missing from Cox that I DO want to watch that it was just right for me personally to make the switch, despite having to do a little extra wiring. I won't digress and beat a dead horse, but I'm after content and quality, other than that I won't spout any venom in this post. :)
I'm afraid I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and do some fishing in the walls one of these days to the attic for the real answer to my signal dilemna. I was told that Omaha was in the next rollout of local HD when I got installed and thought it would be a non factor by now, and I'm just impatient.
ajwees41 01-15-08, 02:01 PM I don't think the market is as cornered as is the fact no other cable company wants to build here. Qwest even only built a few miles of tv cable, but not the full Omaha area.
ajwees41 01-15-08, 09:26 PM anyone know when the othe HD channels will be added that were mentioned in the flyer? Has anyone tried ordering the hd channel after they already had the dvr, but didn't order the hd channels since you didn't have an HDTV, but ordered them after buying an hdtv/ I was just wondering if they charged anything to add the channels to your account?
RexxRacerX 01-16-08, 12:44 PM Does this mean that you took the plunge into a new HDTV? If so congrats, you'll love it.
I don't have the foggiest idea for an answer to your question, but worst case while you straighten/figure it out with Cox you should be able to receive locals via a simple set of rabbit ears. I believe our Cox bills had the Digital Tiers and DVR charges on it, but nothing for HD access with Cox, so I wouldn't be surprised if just a simple phone call would turn them on with no billing changes.
Let us know what you find out, I'm curious if they are charging a fee for just HD, if so I can add that to my list of reasons to never go back to them! :)

Yeah, it shocks me too, It's not like Omaha is a terribly low DMA. I think it's somewhere in the mid 70's on the list, and Lincoln is in the low 100's. If someone would come in to both, and be staged for the growth between the 2 I would think it would be a wise investment.
I was so hyped when Telechoice/Qwest came on the scene, and had them for quite some time, but did they ever really go beyond basic cable offerings? And I believe they only rolled out west of the Interstate in Omaha only. It's been years since I had them, and at that time it was just the basic 70-ish stations, and no DVR, HD, Digital packages, etc. Qwest/Telechoice was also testing VDSL offerings in other markets at the same time they came in with cable, did anything ever come of that, I wonder?

I ended up order the upgrade on line and there was no charge and am now watching TBSHD. I ordered http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?Sku=S452-2300 I know it's not the best one, but my current tv was not keeping the settings like if I watched a movie at night and it had a black scene and I was watching it at the tv would be to dark without messing with the settings.

yes Omaha is 75th DMA. I think qwest quit the tv business last year and only does Satelite now. I think they still provide qwestchoice tv, but only in the areas you mentioned.

I had similar issues, and even going with an attic antenna didn't work well initially. I'm at 150th & Blondo and there is no alignment for an antenna that worked well. Making problems worse is that since my TV was in the basement in the southwest corner, 15 and 42 were impossible to get. So up into the attic I went. I bought a DB-8, and while it didn't work as well as I hoped, I think it was exactly what I needed when combined with a ChannelMaster pre-amp.
What I ended up doing is taking the AntennasDirect DB-8 and aiming half of the elements towards Crown Point, then taking the other half of the elements and aiming them towards Gretna. This gives me great coverage of all the locals, though 26 is a little spotty. But this alignment seems to work ok with 12, so I always get SOMETHING for NET. 32/36 are hit and miss, but I haven't found a darn thing worth watching on IPTV in years anyway that wasn't on NET.
I had originally hoped to get KLKN and KOLN out of Lincoln, and did get them at one time, but the alignment that got me those stations unreliably also caused the Omaha stations to flake out. Right now, I'm thinking about getting a VHF antenna and aiming it west/southwest, as the Lincoln stations are supposed to move their digital signals to their analog VHF frequencies next year. Connect that to the pre-amp on the VHF side, and I'm hoping I'll have something to work with.
I chose this option as I have Qwest Choice TV, and decided that this was a cheaper option than going with Cox Digital Cable. When I priced it out, Cox seemed to be as expensive, if not more than a dish, and the dish has better programming anyway. By my math, Qwest's basic cable runs about $30 a month less than Cox's digital service, so I've just about broken even on my investment so far. (Granted, Cox digital has more channels, but the only one's that interested me were ESPN-HD and ESPN2-HD. Not worth the $30 a month...)

C'mon, Cox. Is it really that hard to label the HD channels to mimic what's on basic cable (ESPN = 31, but ESPNHD = 735)? It's not like you have HD channels spilling out onto the street.

Hey, just a quick update for those of you who live in the Lincoln area. I recently recieved the Terk indoor antenna (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007MXZB2)that I purchased off amazon.com and just wanted to let you guys know that I've had amazing success with it.
The antenna I had before was a $25 amplified anteanna I had picked up at Radio Shack, which did ok with Lincoln channels but not so good with the Omaha stations. This new Terk model, however, has no such issues. I have it sitting directly next to my Samsung DLP HDTV on top of a tower speaker, pointed towards the northeast. 6.1, 6.2, 7.1, 7.2, etc. all come in crystal clear. I'm very satisfied with this new purchase, and most of all happy that I was able to avoid running new wire for a rooftop mounted outdoor antenna, which was my fear. Would have been quite a hassle with my basement setup.
Now I just need DirecTV to start selling this bad boy (http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/directv-intros-two-atsc-tuner-am21-to-piggyback-hr21/)so I can integrate these OTA channels in with my HR21 and I'll be good to go.

JoelWNelson 01-20-08, 07:24 PM Is Cox basic cable required in order to get the clear QAM HD channels? I can't get any QAM channels on either a Miglia USB tuner or a Samsung HDTV w/built-in tuner. I used to have Cox basic cable, and still have digital telephone and high-speed Internet. I don't subscribe to any video services now; I get OTA HDTV exclusively.
However, last night I was at a friend's apartment and saw that on his HDTV (not a Samsung) he gets the locals plus some on-demand programming over clear QAM. Like me, he no longer gets any video service from Cox, but does get high-speed Internet.
Any thoughts on why I might have no luck with clear QAM while my friend might? I get more locals with an antenna than I would over QAM, so clear QAM isn't a necessity -- although now I would like to check out my neighbors' On Demand. . .
I'm wondering if Cox might have actually blocked any video from coming through to me when I dropped video from my account. . . anyone else not paying for video services and getting clear QAM anyway?
rmalbers 01-21-08, 07:50 PM I found this on other cities' forum and thought it might come in handy because of some of the questions here. I'm sure this stuff is constantly changing but it's probably better than nothing.

I don't think Cox has exclusive rights since qwest had tv service it was the fact Cox was first and Qwest gave up on building the cable system out.
ajwees41 01-23-08, 04:41 PM Cox HD anyone having problems with the HD channels? I can't recieve ESPN2HD, or A&EHD.
After a little research I found that Cox was given its franchise in 1980, and a contract for 30 years. Parts of the city are also served by Qwest, but Cox has the exclusive cable service east of 72nd. In 1980 that was a huge part of the city.
The company’s contract expires in September, 2011, and the negotiation of the new contract is already underway.
rmalbers 01-23-08, 06:30 PM The Qwest/US West cable service was just a trial at the time, they never intended to build it out, it was just not cost effective with the equipment they were using at the time.

RexxRacerX 01-24-08, 10:31 PM Told you guys it would be a while for Cox to do anything at all sometime last month. I wouldn't be A BIT surprised if they don't have a date announced already for this "Feb rollout" for them to not have any new offerings until March, seriously. And whenever they do get around to activating the new HD channels, you will be unimpressed to say the least by the channels that are on the way.
There is hope on the horizon, and I think they're finally getting it... but this is just Cox trying to stem the tide of defections to satellite systems. I would be interested to see the #'s if anyone knows where to find such info. I personally know that in my little circle of family and friends, 25 households that recently switched from Cox to Direct TV in the Omaha metro.

The way I read the .pdf is that the channel listing is effective Feb 2nd. The new HD channels still have that damn "*" indicating 'coming soon.' So, we might, or might not, get them on the 2nd.
I know SAT has much more HD channels, but I'll be damned if I go back to them.

I just got an email back and it said within the next few months the new HD will launch. Hopefully there will be more sooner then later after that.

I've been with DirecTV for almost 9 years. No "buyer's remorse" here. :)
My daughter is switching from Cox to DirecTV now. She is on her 3rd cable box in the last year. Tired of losing programs that were supposed to have recorded...and others that WERE recorded and then disappeared in a matter of a couple of days. Getting lots of HD is just a bonus for her. She has had it with Cox.

what model of box did she have? The 3412-3416 are alot better and are all digital and seem to handle crappy signals better then the 6412-6416 do.

Whichever HD DVR box Cox offered, I'd guess. I'd have to ask her.

Depends what show you're watching. Not everything on WOWT-HD is HD, but it appears that everything is upconverted. If NBC isn't providing an HD feed, you'll get the upconverted SD feed.

I understand that. The Today Show is usually in HD in the morning. This morning it was not. I also noticed last night that the NBC State of the Union coverage was the only one in SD.
jonnyozero3 01-29-08, 06:35 PM Indirectly OT - does anyone know of a good list of the Cox Omaha QAM channels? I'm not sure which is which...
Thanks in advance.
Maverick151 01-29-08, 06:42 PM Looks like Cox rolled out the latest tier of HD channels. Food, H&G, and History. The next tier needs to be rolling out more quickly. I did notice that the Food HD is not a simulcast of Food. I'm assuming that some of the shows such as Iron Chef America and Dinner Impossible were not recorded in HD format so they are not putting it on there. Anyways, it's a step in the right direction.
Ronald L M 01-29-08, 08:56 PM I have Cox and I just checked and have no new hd? Maverick you have Cox? If so what part of the city do you live in ?

Hopefully everyone will have it within the next week.

i had a Motorola from about 6 months ago and it was total crap. It missed recordings all the time. I finally got fed up and git an HD Tivo.... my life has never been better. It took the installer around 2 hours to get the cablecards working but all is well now.

B/C they're lazy b*stards, who enjoy their monopoly in the Omaha market.
Did anyone else watch CNN HD last night (GOP debate)? The picture looked awful, with lots of "static" coming through. Like CNN can't afford decent HD equipment.

They probably have to miss with the frequncy and want the time to make sure everything is right.
I'm curious, for those of you that utilize Cox for your HD, why haven't you pulled the plug? The cost difference between the 2 services (beyond the boxes which you can always work a deal on) is less than $10 per month and you'll actually be able to fully utlize that expensive equipment you've bought.

Well for me Cox has channels (CMTPure Country, FSN included in the price).
I don't think either of the satellite providers carry CMT Pure and to get the FSN channel we would need to subscribe to a sports tier
plus we have HBO which is free since we have the phone and internet through cox
We would pay $21.65 if we switched from cox to directv.

Gary Omaha 01-31-08, 09:41 PM I'm curious, for those of you that utilize Cox for your HD, why haven't you pulled the plug?
I utilize Cox not only for my HD, but also for all my viewing.
Last time I checked, I am saving money by sticking with Cox for the particular package of services I have, compared to what the satellite companies offer.
I have Cox for phone and Internet service too, and I'm very happy with that service. The three bundled services allows me to get "free" HBO.
In our neighborhood, the signal quality is excellent and we rarely have outages. I have a friend (true, only one, but he is reliable) who had satellite and dropped it because of all the signal dropouts during -- his words -- "Anytime it's not sunny out." He switched TO Cox and is happy, too.
Yes, I've had some issues with the Cox Motorola DVR but those appear to be in the past. I am happy with the unit I presently have. I would say that it appears that TIVO service would be a nice upgrade, and when/if Cox ever offers it I'll switch to that. The current channel guide -- while acceptable -- is not ideal.
Probably the biggest reason I haven't considered switching is the ability to hook up "any number" of TVs (yeah, I know there's a limit) without boxes to get basic cable. I have a lot of TVs around the house and this is a big plus. I don't need lots of "upper tier" channels on them but do like news & weather channels.
Lastly -- and I know this will annoy some here, but I don't mean to do so -- my world does not revolve around HD. I am perfectly happy with a growing number of HD channels and appreciate those that are being added slowly. I watch a lot of SD, which my TV seems to happily up-convert just fine, at least for my eyes. I even watch -- GASP! -- old videotapes every now and then. For me, HD is a special delight that I enjoy occasionally, maybe regularly, but not constantly. The move to HD is something I look forward to, not demand yesterday.
I hope I've answered your question. :)

If my TV reception went out in a thunderstorm once, I'd pretty much throw all the DTV equipment out into the yard and run over it. And I hear that happens, so, not for me. Plus, I have phone and internet with Cox. Also, I go out of town a lot, and Cox doesn't have a problem shutting off my service for a month or two at a pop.
Lastly, the Chinese can't shoot down my cable tv service.
nebugeater 02-01-08, 07:45 AM Lastly, the Chinese can't shoot down my cable tv service.

HILAROUS!!!
Btw, I had Dish for 6 months. As someone else said, if it wasn't clear skies, reception was spotty. If it was snowing, no picture whatsoever.
Also, I have all three services (digital cable, internet, phone), but no free HBO. Did I miss something?
Gary Omaha 02-01-08, 10:03 AM Also, I have all three services (digital cable, internet, phone), but no free HBO. Did I miss something?
I think there's a minor catch in there -- you need to have phone service with some "feature package" -- but if you have digital cable, digital phone, and HSI service, Cox offers one of three discounts:
(1) Free HBO
(2) 100 minutes (?) of free long distance
or
(3) A monthly discount of around $10, basically the same cost as either of the above
So, you may be getting the discount instead of the HBO service. Does that help?

DBS service should remain in all but the heaviest of rain or storm occlusion. I can see and appreciate the need for unlimited TV connections; that is one thing I've learned to live around in my (DBS) house.

I've had DBS service for 11 years now. I have never had a winter-time outage due to snow. I may have brushed the accumulated snow off the dish at some point, but I don't recall doing it for reception reasons. I spend a lot of time in the lower level "man-cave" and when the reception goes out, I know it's because of some sever storm.

Edl,
Believe me, I HAVE considered DTV/DISH - here are reasons I am staying with Cox (for now):
1. Ability to receive local stations easily - I have an indoor antenna, but cannot receive FOX unless I string it out on my front porch - the other stations don't come in consistently well, without constantly fiddling with the antenna location. I don't want to mess with installing an attic antenna.
2. Problems with multiple TVs - I have four TVs around the house - with DTV, I have to get a separate box for each, and the last time I checked, there was an additional monthly charge for each one. With Cable, I can run the cable directly into my tv (except for the one HDTV, which has a box).
3. As others have mentioned, I know of someone (someone I see regularly and work with) and he has had numerous problems with his dish - wind, rain cause problems. I don't want to deal with that.
4. Cost - every time I check, after adding all the costs, my monthly bill is higher (more than the $10 you mentioned) plus I have to purchase at least some equipment up front.
These reasons are in order of most significant to least significant - I would be willing to pay more for more HD (reason 4), but I am not willing to deal with the other problems. I do think the added cost is probably worth what you are getting with DTV.
Believe me, I do not exactly "like" COX - from the time they originally entered the Omaha market, I feel that they have misled the viewing public regarding their fee increases. I also think they have been slow to increase their HD offerings. But, they are the most convenient and reliable service (in my humble opinion) for me at the present time.
My viewing in HD is primarily sports. I am happy, but would like to have NFL network, FSN, and a few others in HD. COX has added ESPN2, TBS, and TNT in HD in the last year, which has been a big improvement. I am willing to wait for the others for now. I wish I could get the Cubs in HD !!! (can I get that on DTV?)
One last thing - I still may change my mind - when DTV does offer locals, I will re-visit this decision - maybe I will dump a TV or two at that time - who knows ?
Thanks to all here for their information and input !
room112 02-01-08, 11:33 AM Everyone,
I think slowly we are starting to argue, generically, about Cox vs. DBS. I'm guilty of it too, but I think we should shy away about the the overall arguement and keep the comments about HD.
Tar and feathering may now commence...
ajwees41 02-01-08, 02:32 PM Just how do you think COX is getting their feeds or the local stations for that matter if you think having local cable makes you sat. proof?
Well the last time I asked Ketv about an outage they said it was a fiber line cut, so it looks like they get KETV over fiber.:)

Just returned a box today that has been buggy from the start. It was a 6412. Was told they are completely out of DVR boxes citywide and have a waiting list. I have another 6412 that has worked fine from the get go. Does anyone have experience coming off the waiting list as to which box they are receiving. The customer service girl was less than helpful. She said it could be either one, but
"didn't know for sure".

Correct, I've got two Cox cable cards installed in the TiVo, but no actual box from Cox. The Travel Channel showed up briefly on 777 last week, but this week 777 give me a 'channel unavailable' message on the TiVo.

Jesus Tap Dancing Christ, is it really that hard for Cox to keep their reps informed of a channel lineup?
rmalbers 02-09-08, 06:57 PM It is really crazy how clueless the CSRs are, but that really just shows bad managment, it's really not the CSR's fault. The CSRs are only as good as the people that manage them and it goes up the line from there. It's really a hot button for me, I see bad management daily and it really makes me mad. (People who manage really need to step up or get out or the people's jobs they manage will be in another country, literally.)

Directv now has 59 full-time national channels (including the HD Locals), compared to 28 for Cox. And that's not even counting the 4 'West' premium channels Directv has, nor the 11 full-time regional sports channels.
Cox is hopelessly way behind, and I think they are feeling real pressure to try to keep up.

That's why I switched to DirecTV. I just couldn't take it anymore + they have all of the NFL games & NFLHD.:D

seward sker 02-13-08, 10:44 PM I have DirecTV in Lincoln, and from what I can tell ... no HD local channels yet. Did this update affect Omaha only? I was under the impression Omaha/Lincoln were considered the same market...
They showed up today. I had to go back in and add the channels to my favorites in order to see them. HD locals via dish, I can return my OTA antenna. In case you have one of the new DirecTV DVR's (HR-21), the functionality to program it via the web was added last week.

Omaha and Lincoln should be one market since they are so close but are 2 seperate markets, many cities smaller than Omaha have a bigger tv market since they include all the surrounding population, but Omaha does not get to count Lincoln.

RLM5150 02-20-08, 12:50 PM I got four more HD channels on Cox yesterday. I'm in Millard.
Still no Travel Channel HD or Starz HD. I wonder how long it will take to get these four channels around the entire Omaha market, and then how long before we get any more channels.
Does anyone in Omaha see Starz HD on Cox yet?

I guess you didn't read my earlier post? Those are supposed to come in March according to an email I got.
nitty316 02-20-08, 02:58 PM All that's really left for me are USAHD, FSNHD, SCIFIHD, NBAHD, NHLHD, & NFLHD. I'd love for them to add the HD channel for wherever Smackdown ends up as well as ad CSTV to their sports teir.
Maverick151 02-20-08, 04:27 PM It appears the next round of HD channels if looking at San Diego's market are: Travel Channel HD, Starz HD, Science Channel HD, NHL Network HD, and NFL Network HD. Seems nearly half of Cox's markets have the Travel Channel already available. It looks like we mimic Kansas's Cox affiliate channel line-up. I did read that Cox has had the signal available to all the affiliates since Jan. 1st, they are just rolling it out in phases accross all it's markets.

StarzHD,CinemaxHD and TravelHD are the only ones promised in the flyer that we haven't recieved yet.
It would be be kind of stupid to get NHLHD since we don't have the nonHD version yet.
NebrGuy 02-20-08, 10:36 PM I'll admit from the start that I haven't read every posting on this thread, but I've noticed something lately that has me curious. People are talking about USAHD or The Travel Channel HD or whatever HD. Is there really that much material being created in HD outside of the networks and sporting events? I have the digital/HD channels in Lincoln and as I watch them, they are for the most part the same shows being shown on the regular channel, with a few exceptions like PBSHD or DiscoveryHD. Law & Order on standard TNT is the same as Law & Order on TNTHD and it is an episode that was created for 480i broadcasting.
In reality aren't we really getting a SD signal? Keeping in mind the few exceptions where a cable company is going out and buying rights to an HD show or broadcasting an HD sporting event, isn't it really a 480i signal that is being bumped to a 480p signal? Can you really get 720p out of a 480i source? It's like upconverting a dvd, isn't it? Or using digital zoom rather than optical zoom on a digital camera. The broadcaster can play with it a bit, but to get true HD the show has to be created in HD.
Bottom line (and I am curious, not poking fun or being antagonistic) what is the hype about getting USA or Travel Channel in HD or any other channel that doesn't broadcast a significant number of hours of true HD programming. I hope I'm not too far off topic by asking this.
for usa i know i watch their original programming in hd; shows like psych, burn notice, monk and i was hoping for the 4400 before it got canned.
nitty316 02-21-08, 06:34 PM I want USAHD because Raw is on USA in HD and I believe they have some golf on there as well.
Maverick151 02-21-08, 08:23 PM Programming that was filmed or created before the HD boom and is now being played on the certain HD channels are being converted up. However, most of the programming now a days are being filmed with HD cameras and being saved in HD format. So they are able to take that and show that on the HD channel with the same clarity. Also, it is not just a HD image being shown through, but the 5.1 surround sound as well. On the standard channel, the analog cannot handle that much information, so they have to compress the image/sound in order to transmit the signal. In doing so, they degrade the origional format.
I feel that a true HD channel allows you to be immersed in not only the image being transmitted, but also the surround sound. When I watch a show on standard channel, my receiver process the incoming 2 channel audio into a 5.1 surround. It does a fair job, but you can hear the same sounds come out of all the speakers. In the HD format, you get seperate audio for each speaker and the left to right sound on the screen really feels like it's coming left to right in the room.
HD cameras are expensive and the production companies were slow to take them on. But it is becoming a standard and costs are slowly dropping to make them more affordable.

The hype is because SD programming sucks on todays higher re$olution television $et$. Upconverted programs just look better.

Stando97 02-26-08, 10:15 PM Hello all - forgive me if I missed this in earlier forum postings. Any word from Dish Network if they are ever gonna get local channels in HD here in Lincoln? DirecTV is now broadcasting locals in Omaha and are scheduled to do the same for Lincoln in May. You'd think that Dish would have to start doing the same to compete with DirecTV. I live in a valley so it's pretty hard to get anything over-the-air in my particular location. I can receive ABC and CBS out of Lincoln's HD towers by Seward, but that's it. Anybody heard anything?
Thanks.

You already receive all the local commercial HD you can get anyway. NBC, Fox, CW, and MNTV are not in HD in the Lincoln/Hastings/Kearney market. Not much to be gained with Dish Network HD locals anyway -- at least not until the local NBC and Fox affiliates go HD. I doubt KCWL/CW will go HD anytime soon; they don't even have a digital signal yet -- and MNTV is on a DT subchannel so no HD there either. Only one you're missing is PBS/NET.

Okay - thanks for the info. Guess I'm still confused - as I said in my previous post, I live in somewhat of a valley so over-the-air HD signals are sketchy at best. I was receiving Fox 42 out of Omaha at one time but since cannot. I was just wanting to know when I can get the local HD channels that are available through Dish. The Dish people I call are hopeless - DirecTV seems to be a lot more knowledgeable regarding local HD availability through their networks.

Which side of Lincoln are you located?
What type of antenna are you using?
Do you have a rotor up on the roof or better yet up on a mast/tower?
Are you using a UHF RF amplifier? If so where is it installed? What is the amplification level in dB and what's the noise figure on the amp?
I would venture to say that KPTM should be doable for most in Lincoln with the correct hardware and integration.
Regards, John

KPTM and KXVO (Fox 42 and CW 15) do reach much of Lincoln OTA, as a previous poster said, but aren't carried on the Lincoln satellite locals packages. Instead you'd get KTVG and KCWL -- neither of which are in HD. So even if Dish HD locals become available, you would still only get SD over the satellite locals package for Fox, CW, and NBC.
From my experiences with OTA in Lincoln, though, it seems with a good antenna you should still get 15 and 42 OTA unless you're in the far south/southwest part of town (and even then you can probably get it with an aerial and/or amplified antenna). Over-the-air is the way to go in this case, if it's at all possible in your location.
I could be wrong, but I don't know of any timetable for Dish HD launch in Lincoln. DirecTV should have the HD package available soon, but would still be limited only to the stations that actually broadcast in HD (eliminating Fox, CW, and NBC).
NebrGuy 02-28-08, 03:06 PM Thanks for all the replies to my posting last week about HD channels. I hadn't thought about the audio signal. Makes perfect sense.

nitty316 02-29-08, 11:39 AM WWE Smackdown is leaving the CW Network for MyNetwork TV or something like. I looked up MyNetwork's local affiliate and its KPTM. I thought KPTM was Fox. How does that work?

With digital TV, TV stations have the ability to subdivide their signal and carry multiple channels. Every station in Omaha other than KMTV-3 carries multiple digital channels. Here's what's currently available:
3.1 CBS (analog channel 3)
6.1 NBC (analog channel 6)
6.2 62O (Independent channel; mostly reruns and infomercials)
7.1 ABC (analog channel 7)
7.2 WeatherNow (local weather featuring taped weathercasts from channel 7's meteorologists)
12.1 NET-1/PBS (analog channel 12)
12.2 NET-2 (used to be called "Educable")
12.3 NET-3 (Sometimes refered to as "Create"; PBS craft, food, how-to programming)
15.1 WB (analog channel 15)
15.2 Spanish Network (not sure if this is aligned with any network or not)
26.1 NET-1/PBS (analog channel 26)
26.2 NET-2 (same as 12.2)
26.3 NET-3 (same as 12.3)
32.1 IPTV (Iowa Public TV)
32.2 Create (same as 12.3 and 26.3)
42.1 FOX (analog channel 42)
42.2 MyTV (MyNetwork TV)
If you have a digital set, tune to 42.2 to see MyNetwork. I think Cox Cable also carries MyTV on one of their digital channels as well.
ScottChez 03-06-08, 10:32 AM KETV ABC Channel 7 on DirecTV has Green BreakUp issues on the HD Channel
DirecTV now has all our Locals in High Def in Omaha.
They all look good except for KETV HD which has the Green Pixealate (spelling?) issue when doing HD programming (prime time).
They had this problem in Washington DC on DirecTV and ABC and they were thinking it was the Box on the Local side for the TV station feed.
KETV are you reading this? Can you check the box going to DirecTV for your HD feed. Something is not right. It is a very intermittent issue. The OTA feed is good.
I know of several that have this problem.
Here is an other thread to the Sister forum.
http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=68498&page=5&highlight=picture+breakup
Thank-you Scott,
I have received a couple of phone calls regarding this issue, I think it may be an issue with the encoder I use and DirecTV's receiver at the LRF (local receive facility) I communicated this to the encoder vendor and have contacted the CE of WJLA, we will compare notes. I am curious as to the device DirecTV is sending WJLA in the other thread.
Thanks again

considering the fact that Cox still has customers who don't have digital cable that just plug the cable into the rf port. That's most likely the reason they don't offer more HD.

Not all the programming is in HD. KETV locally-produced content is in SD, as is ABC news and reality programming, and the daytime programs.
angryht 03-11-08, 11:33 AM Also, if there is a ticker with breaking news (like last night), they usually go to SD. I'm not sure why they can't figure out how to do it with HD graphics. On Channel 42 (I think) they run a Childrens Hospital logo at the bottom of the hour to tell us the time and temp. I think that is stupid but I would guess that they get paid very well for it.

To my knowledge, KETV's ticker graphic is SD-only. I don't think they have a HD graphics package yet. Actually, aside from station ID "bugs", the only area commercial stations that can do HD tickers are KPTM & KXVO. KOLN/KGIN has HD weather alert graphics but not a HD news ticker.
KPTM took a step backwards with the Children's Hospital logo, as they had the ability to put anything up and stay in HD prior to adding that, but now that they run the CH logo they have to drop to SD during the duration the logo is on screen.

Gary Omaha 03-13-08, 09:22 AM Interesting. If folks who are visiting here are uncertain about what is and is not in HD, can you imagine how many of the "unwashed" viewers out there are also uncertain? I know of one person who argues -- ARGUES -- with me that everything in digital is HD. He insists it's the same thing. Somebody out there (TV manufacturers, TV stations, cable, satellite) isn't doing a good enough job educating people.
The guides often do have the little HD mark next to HD shows, but aren't always correct. Reminds me of the days when COLOR was listed with shows. (Yes, I'm an old-timer I guess!) Maybe they need "The following program is brought to you in LIVING HIGH DEFINITION on NBC" before a show! :p

what the 7 channels, or the total of 80 by years end? Omaha already has all those except fot the science channel hd.
I just heard back on my email to see how many Omaha planned to offer and the number is 75 channels, but it could more or fewer depending on if they get the contracts signed.

Anyone know how they are going to do it?
Is it the switched video technology I heard about last year from my old source or did they come up with something new?
Is it MPEG 4 compression like with SAT?
Will those cabe cards work?
What technology will OMaha be using? Same thing?

Is it the switched video technology I heard about last year from my old source or did they come up with something new?
Is it MPEG 4 compression like with SAT?
Will those cabe cards work?
What technology will OMaha be using? Same thing?
I am betting on upgrades t 1GHz and SDV for the 75 HD channels.
little red 03-19-08, 11:47 AM Has anyone tried to get an HD box from Cox in Omaha recently. I bought a second hdtv at the Mart over the weekend and cox is telling me they are out of standard HD and dvr HD boxes until at least April 1. they said motorola isn't keeping up with the demand nation wide. Anybody else been told the same thing? thanks.
Aaron Oppliger 03-19-08, 11:50 AM Nice to see that KETV is starting to air Wheel of Fortune in HD - sort of. Monday night they did the first 10 minutes and then dropped to SD and Tuesday started out in SD but then switched over to HD. Not that it's the most exciting program to see in high def, but it's never bad to have more content on the air. It always annoyed me to see the "Available in HD" banner at the bottom and then have to watch it in SD.
I think that Jeopardy tapes in HD too, but I'm guessing we won't see that around here for a while since it's afternoon programming and technically not prime time.

you can thank he FCC for the shortage since cable boxes now require cable cards and cox is not alone comcast also has a box shortage thanks to the cablecard requirement.
rmalbers 03-19-08, 06:36 PM Please explain: What does a cable box have to do with cable cards? What cable box has a cable card in it?
Aaron Oppliger 03-19-08, 09:40 PM Looks like I spoke too soon...no HD Wheel of Fortune on KETV tonight. I wish they'd get consistent about it. Does it cost more for them to broadcast the HD feed? Weird that they'd deny viewers HD content that is readily available to the network.

The FCC mandated that all but the lowest-end cable boxes must have separable security (i.e., CableCard). This has been in effect since July 1, 2007.

They get the national hd feed, but the Wheel is not national it's syndicated, so they might beable to brodcast it in HD since they don't have anything local in HD yet.

Just checked and it's in HD right now. Maybe KETV was just working out the bugs on the local end.
On a semi-related note, I don't know how long they've been doing this, but I noticed this afternoon that KPTM was running the syndicated "Everybody Loves Raymond" in HD.

What I actually said was, "all but the lowest-end cable boxes". Cable companies can petition for low-end boxes to be exempt from the rule. No mention of SD, HD or DVR. It's likely that only boxes costing less than $75 would qualify, so it's unlikely that HD or DVR boxes would get the exemption.

I have a DCT-6412 that is a few years old. It will periodically freeze during playbacks, which I am attributing to a dying drive. I went in to Cox and they told me that they'd have to UPS me a new one as every location in town is currently out of DVRs. They said this yesterday and told me to expect my new box on Wednesday.
I'm hoping to get something with a drive bigger than 100GB, but not holding my breath. Has anybody had any luck with doing a drive replacement? If you do a drive swap out, does the box "bootstrap itself" on the new drive and utilize all the space for recordings?
Thanks.

you already have a 120GB drive and no you can't add a bigger drive since you rent the box. They also have boxes with 160GB drives.

primetime6 03-23-08, 02:20 PM Ok, sort of off topic, we are in the market for a new Home Theater system, right now we have a all in one DVD, CD, TUNER, Line 1 & 2, system with a Sub, front channel, 2 fronts and 2 backs. I want to go Blue Ray, do they make a similar unit where instead of DVD it is blue ray?

Was out of town Saturday night, but during Thursday night's Kansas State/USC game, the feed kept pixelating every 15 seconds or so. I figured that it was the national feed because it stopped during local commercials. Signal strength seemed fine on my TV (max bars).
Aaron Oppliger 03-24-08, 04:05 PM Primetime, currently there aren't any "all-in-one" Blu-ray boxes, just standalone players. I would think that you could add one of these to your existing setup if you hook the audio up to Line 1 or Line 2 and then the video up to your television.
primetime6 03-24-08, 10:18 PM I think we will wait awhile, since BR just beat out HD, I think the all in one units will become more popular

Right. I remember that. I called Cox to get my DVR hooked to my account properly and as we both suspected, the channels I listed above are gone. No longer in the lineup. If you really wanted to, buy a Tivo and get some cable cards from Cox. Depending on the Tivo box, you might be able to get a M-stream card, instead of two S-stream cards.
You pay a 'set-up' fee for the cable card installation, but the lease on cards is only $2/mth, compared to the $10/mth for the set-top box.

last time I checked Omaha doesn't have Multistream cards plus he would loose 2way services. That and the cost of the box+service fee is why I am waiting for the Cox/Tivo.

right now there will be no video in any higher frequncy then there currently is. The current boxes don't have 1GHz tuners so even they would be unable to tune the higher frequncy.

I guess what I'm really asking is, when Cox starts using 1Ghz will that be the only signal on the line (leaving all non-1Ghz equipment unusable with Cox service) or will there still be 'standard' QAM available on the same cable (if that's even possible)?

Cox won't televise 40 KC games
BY KIRK SEMINOFF
The Wichita Eagle
Forty of the 140 Kansas City Royals scheduled to be televised by Fox Sports Net Kansas City, including today's game in Detroit, won't be available on Cox Communications cable systems in Kansas and parts of Nebraska.
FSN Kansas City, Channel 34 on Cox, increased the number of televised games from last year to all but 22 of the Royals' games. Geoff Goldman, head of media relations for FSN Kansas City, said that the extra 40 games were offered to cable and satellite systems for an undisclosed amount in addition to the original 100-game contract.
All 140 games are scheduled to be televised by satellite providers DirecTV and Dish Network.
"FSN pays additional rights fees to the Royals to televise more games, and producing those games add further costs," Goldman said. "We work with our distributors to help defray the additional costs."
Cox spokesperson Sarah Kauffman said the cable provider's contract is for 100 games, and there have not been negotiations to add the 40.
Games that will be televised, but not on Cox, this month are today (at Detroit), Sunday (at Minnesota), April 9-10 (New York), April 12-13 (Minnesota), April 17 (at L.A. Angels), April 22 (Cleveland) and April 30 (at Texas).

All 140 games are scheduled to be televised by satellite providers DirecTV and Dish Network.

the least they could do is not putting them in the guide as being on. Wish RSTN was still around.
There is a list now on www.cox.com/omaha

I was going to get MLB Extra Innings thru Cox but since they are not adding the Hd games like some Cox systems and then I find out they are only showing some of the KC Royals games, and none of KC Royals in Hd I'm ordering the MLB TV baseball package. I really wish Cox Omaha would step up and add hd content now not in 6 months or a year, I tired of waiting.
