Average_Guy97 08-02-08, 12:48 AM Oh, I expect you'll get a reply with KLKN's side of the story. But notice what their side of the story is:
They left a HUGE amount of leeway in their wording. Are they asking for retransmission fees as are paid to local affiliates in other small markets (e.g., Spokane, well, that's the only other similar-sized town I can think of), or are they comparing to retransmission fees paid to large market affiliates (e.g., LA, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, ...)? Other program providers who have no local ties to our community could be ESPN, USA, HBO, etc. There is no relevance to even making such a comparison.
I admit, I'm cynical, but I suspect that they worded this to try to imply they were comparing "apples with apples" when in fact they are comparing "apples with pastries".
And now I have to go get some supper ;-)
I sent an e-mail from my Hotmail account and got rejected to both addresses...my guess is that they are getting nailed right now.
I have DirecTV and pick up my locals over the air with the HR20-100 DVR. I have noticed for quite some time, an audio glich that seems to mostly occur on KMTV Channel 3-1. It's almost like a momentary stutter of the audio, and then no audio for a split second afterwards. Does anyone else experience this? I will also occur on the DirecTV's HD feed from KMTV (Channel 3).
Thanks!
Mike

I also pickup KMTV OTA with Directv but don't have that exact problem. The issue I have is when they are showing a program that isn't in HD, there is a clicking sound in the background. Only happens on 3-1 for a few days, then goes away a couple of weeks and then comes back. Very, very annoying.
Which DVR are you using? Do you get that on any other channels?
SkersR1 08-11-08, 04:04 PM I have the same DVR as you, the HR20. I have never heard it on any other station than KMTV OTA 3-1. We don't have locals in HD yet in Lincoln, but hopefully this week will bring them.
It hasn't done it in a couple of weeks so I expect it to start up again soon. It only does it when the pillar box is on and goes away immediately if an HD program follows it.
Huskerfan 08-11-08, 04:09 PM Wow. I haven't posted on this thread for a while but has COX stepped up to the plate or what? Gotta love 50 some NFL games in 27 days on NFL HD. I was one of the early adopters of COX HD when there were only about 8 channels--now there seems to be "too many" to surf through. I'm sure there's detractors that will say "Dish or Direct have more" or "why don't they have such and such channel yet?" but I'm happy with what we have now and I imagine before Feb 09 that we'll have a whole bunch more.

Huskerfan,I agree that Cox has stepped up and recently added more hd, hopefully they will continue to add more hd weekly, with the Husker football season right around the corner I wish Cox would come to agreement to add FSN-Hd (Huskers will be on fsn-hd this season).
Tim in Hollywood 08-11-08, 10:53 PM Hi,
I wish I could find out who the genius is that thinks it is more important to tell us it is raining in Norfolk than to let us watch the Olympics in HD.
Currently, there is a thunderstorm warning west of Norfolk! No HD for us (because of weather's lower-third and WOWT's low-definition equipment)!
If you also think this is ridiculous, please visit
http://www.wowt.com/station/misc/4567537.html
or just call (402) 346-6666 to leave a comment or talk to someone.
I could understand a tornado or something like this. But it's only raining!!! Ugh!
Thanks,
Tim
nebugeater 08-12-08, 07:21 AM First off if your location is Sothern California, what do you care? ;)
Second, just because it is not in YOUR back yard doesn't mean that it is not important. They serve a wide viewing area and this is part of it. Note word SERVE. The local stations have taken a beating this summer for not being on enough during weather related times so I imaging they are somewhat conservative in their choices on when to cut it. Would you prefer a total dropping and cut to weather only?
Third, the real issue in my opinion is getting the right equipment so that they can do their cut in and overlay without loosing the HD feed. I know this takes $$$ and time but it should be a priority as HD becomes the norm.

Cox is good I think for the average family/person. But for a sportsnut like myself, DIRECTV is the only option. All the MLB/NBA games in HD is just awesome. Watching the Big 10 Network and CBSCollege show old games these days is awesome too. Being able to get multiple out of market college football games this fall on FSN HD will be so awesome too. ESPNUHD launches in a couple weeks too.
This is to not take anything away from Cox, they are doing a good job, for the most part.

as soon as cox decides to drop analog I bet you will see alot more channels and service upgrades.
Anyone see the article in the Lincoln Journal Star yesterday saying Time Warner was adding USAHD for a short time for the Olympics?
If they have capacity to add it for a short time, why can't they add it full time?

maybe the don't have a fulltime contract, but a contract for Olympic coverage.
Tim in Hollywood 08-13-08, 12:48 AM I'm here! You don't see me complaining about the poor decision-making in other locales. ;)
If my location had been getting the rain (it was only rain), I still wouldn't have wanted to lose HD coverage. It's not that I think they should ignore a Tornado Warning so that I can get HD. This one was only a Thunderstorm Warning. No tornado, no high-winds, no hail, just rain. Not even a severe thunderstorm warning. Ugh!
Would I prefer a total cut-in as opposed to the lower-third? Now that's a false choice! I almost wish they would cut in to tell the region that it is raining west of Norfolk. Then, maybe enough people would complain about it.
Unquestionably, the local stations don't have the necessary equipment to do the job correctly. That would solve everything. We certainly agree on that. :)

Did it happen yet? DirecTV usually launches new locals on Wednesdays...
Also, I suppose your clicking noise could be due to the pillar boxes themselves??? I assume you're talking about KMTV's pillars, not some generated by your HR20.

No joy today with locals. Hopefully soon, although I have been getting pretty good signal OTA with only a few hiccups. Would like to have it for sure for football.

As I have already said FSN wants tons of money for FSNKC and they are most likely tying FSNKC and FSNHD together.

Cox just raised the rates, they could use some of that money to pay for FSNKC and FSN-HD. I wish Cox Omaha had competition other than Dish or Directv like FIOS.

Well, there's also Qwest Choice in West Omaha, but they are barely competing with Cox. No HD programming at all; just dirt-cheap basic cable and internet. They do have Versus and FSN-KC, though, in their basic package.
I really wish Qwest would consider building up like they did in Phoenix and Denver.
Aaron Oppliger 08-19-08, 03:25 PM Qwest has a bigger presence in Denver and Phoenix because their corporate offices are located there. In most markets, they don't even offer cable, just service through DirecTV (although they bundle it with their phone and internet services to make it look competitive with local cable companies).

Cornhustler 08-21-08, 09:42 AM KHAS went HD on August 8. I had already posted this but AVSforum lost all new posts that weekend. Their first HD broadcast (that I saw) was the opening ceremony from the Beijing Olympics. They are currently broadcasting on channel 21 with low power which is only available intermittently in Kearney so having it available via DirecTV is great. On Dec. 1 they plan to begin broadcasting a full power signal (45kW) on channel 5. The transmitter has already been installed since they wanted to get it done before winter weather hit. I'm still skeptical that it will work, especially during thunderstorms but I am hopeful that it does. I was hoping we could actually get rid of the big low band antennas but I guess beggars can't be choosy.
Now all people in the blue counties can finally watch CBS, ABC, NBC, FSN, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, CBSCSN, BIG TEN & NFL in HD through DirecTV. All Husker football fans thank you DirecTV.

PAULSTORM 08-21-08, 09:50 AM Enjoyed some of the Olympics w/ my Directv HD Locals..one problem, though. I was wondering if anybody else was getting this during the diving. Whenever the camera would follow the diver down, by the time they would hit the water the picture would freeze up for a second or two. Why is that? I'm guessing since the picture or scene changes quickly, it's too much info for the satellite uplink or my box to handle. I seem to remember that happening a few times while maybe watching a game on ESPN HD. I'm guessing that may not happen, though, if I would get the OTA signal directly from KHAS. Any guessers??

I was seeing the same thing on 5, (not just the diving) but when I switched over to 6-1 OTA it wasn't doing it. I also noticed the audio was a little low.
andersa 08-21-08, 10:12 AM Did the picture really freeze up or was it fast motion blockyness/pixelation you saw? I saw lots of the latter during the diving yesterday and it was bad, almost to the point it was difficult to see the girls hitting the water. MPEG2 is unfortunately not the greatest for real-time high motion video.

It was pretty much a freeze up w/ some pixelation.
That's why I'm going to keep my OTA antenna and get it directly from the horse's mouth so-to-speak. I'm grateful, though, now to have 3 of the big Networks in HD.
It will be interesting to see what we get on OTA KOLN compared to satellite-KOLN during say a Chiefs game. I told my Directv installer that I prefer to get the signal directly from the OTA station. He told me that Directv does clean up the picture some after they get it from their OTA antenna and uplink the signal.
Falcon_77 08-24-08, 09:51 AM NET/PBS Transition Plan
I found the following website and map detailing NET's plans for the DTV transition, starting as early as 9/1/08, for the stations that will flash-cut to their analog channel:
http://www.netnebraska.org/extras/dtv/
http://www.netnebraska.org/extras/dtv/pdfs/coverage_and_transition.pdf
This is one of the most detailed and informative maps I've seen regarding the transition. Hopefully, more PBS systems and even commercial stations will follow suit.
Outside of the Omaha DMA, Nebraska will be heavily VHF, with multiple Low-VHF stations (KHAS, KSNB, KNOP & KWNB all want/will be on Low-VHF). 7-13 should be ok, but I am not optimistic that 2-6 are going to get it done. It could be especially rough in North Platte and that DMA doesn't have a thread here.

Gary Omaha 08-26-08, 09:31 PM Sorry if this has been going on for awhile -- I rarely watch KPTM but tonight was catching some reruns of one of my favorite shows, House. I was shocked when they dropped the video back to SD just to insert a stupid time and temperature bug in the corner. Are they insane?? That's a great way to alienate HD viewers. People complain here about weather graphics in SD, but this is far worse. Oh, but of course -- it's sponsored. Bleah.

I was hoping they would add FSN-hd in time for the college football season.(FSN-HD coverage starts Thursday night) I think we need to tell people to call Cox daily and ask for FSN-hd, with that being said,I think the reason Cox Omaha does not has FSN-hd is Cox Omaha choose not to carry the Kc Royals upgraded package (More games with many in Hd). Most other Cox cities have there regional sports network in Hd.

If you're in the Lincoln-Hastings-Kearney market and have DirecTV, My Network TV is on 25. Over-the-air, channel 25-2 and 32-2 depending on your location. In Omaha, I believe the Bo Pelini show will also be carried on independent "62O" -- 6-2 or 22-2. I don't think DirecTV carries 62O in the Omaha market, and I know they don't carry Lincoln's My Network TV affiliate in Omaha (though you can get it over the air in West Omaha).

Aaron Oppliger 08-28-08, 11:17 AM A few weeks ago, someone had posted a link to a site that compaired HD content for the various service providers. It looks like that post was lost in the server crash. Does anyone still have that link? The site showed HD channels by service provider, and then showed what percent of the content on those channels was actually in HD. It was an awesome link and I was going to show it to a coworker, but it's disappeared.
HuskerMike 08-28-08, 01:29 PM Went to record the Bo Pelini show on my DIRECTV system so I pulled it on in on the website and it only shows available channels for me, and I noticed it will be available on Channel 25, MNT on Sunday. I assume that is My Network TV.
Double check your listings; I'll bet that you'll find the Pelini show on KOLN-DT at 10:30 Sunday night as well. My Network TV is KOLN's second subchannel (10.2), and I think they plan to broadcast it earlier in the day.
Gary Omaha 08-28-08, 08:15 PM Hey! When did ABC & CBS go to HD evening newscasts? I know NBC has been doing it for some time, but I just noticed the others tonight. Perhaps they're set up for HD anyway on account of the Democratic Convention, so they figured they might as well do the news in HD? I hope they keep it that way.

Its too bad about FSN-HD not being carried by Cox Omaha, I seen highlights from last night's FSN-HD game on ESPN and they looked great, in Omaha with Cox we are stuck will blurry FSN.
I have heard in some non Big 10 markets the Big 10 Network is being put on the Digital tier instead of the Basic.
Cox Omaha is clearly becoming a second tier provider when it comes to Standard and High Def channel offerings.
nitty316 08-29-08, 03:21 PM I watched Baylor/Wake on FSMWHD last night and flipped it over to a non HD version by mistake, wow, what a huge difference. Watching FSN in HD is a treat, I have no clue why Cox won't pick that up, esp with all the NU games on there.
DIRECT has yet to add ESPNUHD which sucks.

JoelWNelson 09-01-08, 12:28 AM What are the current clear QAM channels available over Cox? I'm specifically wondering about Iowa PBS (HD and SD) and subchannels like Create, WeatherNow, TuVision, 62O, My42.2, etc. The programs aren't always the same on 26-1 and 32-1 so I'd like to have both.
Antenna reception is pretty bad at my new location (Omaha/Old Mill -- I only get solid reception from KMTV, WOWT, and KETV with a Silver Sensor) and I'm looking for the cheapest option for HD locals. Satellite isn't an option as I am in a north-facing apartment. Hoping to get by with limited basic + QAM if that's possible but wonder if I'll end up missing out on some channels that I currently get OTA.

PAULSTORM 09-02-08, 02:59 PM NTV's GM announced today that they ordered the HD equipment late last week. After it arrives, it will be a short time before NTV & Fox 4/17 go HD. Announcement comes at 4 minute mark of this video:

He didn't mention anything about them whatsoever. There's not a whole lot said in the video but it is an "update". The meat of his comments on HD are only about a minute since it's a 5 min interview and starts at 4 min mark.

I have basic video service now, but still no clear QAM. Does one have to get expanded basic (Cox 26-70) to qualify for the local HDs via QAM? Are they not passed through with limited basic (1-25)?
edit: I realize basic is supposed to go up to channel 28... but in my apartment complex it only goes up to 25.
ScottChez 09-03-08, 12:05 AM Sounds like proof that Cox's Local HD channels really are not free.
I bet there is a trap on there blocking the channels after number 28 plus the Free Clear QAM local HD channels.
Dont tell Channel 3 or they might pull there HD channel again like they did from the last dispute.

I still say nothing is really free. The price for HD is built in there if you pay for the upper tiers. Always compare prices in detail from all 3 providers before ever switching, they are all a couple of dollars a part now. Dont fall for marketing hype and tricks.

The apartment complex manages analog channels. It's technically from Cox but they say to not call Cox because the cable is delivered through their "CableChoice" program. Only "premium" services are ordered direct from Cox.
I know clear QAM is available on TVs in the complex with full expanded basic... it must be their trap is simply cutting out anything higher than 25, including clear QAM.

Tivo HD -S3's also cost $200-800 upfront for hardware plus monthly or lifetime subscription.
Also they only do cable or OTA or FIOS not Directv currently.
ScottChez 09-03-08, 08:55 PM Tivo just finished upgrading DirecTVs current hr10-250 HD DVR that is currently supported but no longer sold. It is limited to only Mpeg2 channels (wont work with the new MPEG4 HD channels). Works for now with about 8 HD MPeg2 channels. Will always work with the SD channels.
There last DirecTV HD Tivo upgrade was to allow for remote booking from the internet. As with all Tivo, it just works and works great.
I would say with that upgrade done, now they engineers will focus on the new HD Tivo that works with DirecTV MPEG4. Still looking at middle of next year though.
It should not be that hard for Tivo since they already have made a SD and a HD Tivo for DirecTV. They already know how to make it work, they have been doing it for 7 years now.

Sarcoma 09-05-08, 07:41 AM I did my weekly scan of the list of cities with locals in HD "coming soon" and was pleased to see that Omaha is back on the list. Lincoln is not back on the list, but I am *hoping* that maybe they will tag along with Omaha somehow.

HiDefHusker 09-05-08, 05:45 PM The D* HR21 sucks and I want TiVo back so I'm switching back to Cox with a TiVo HD (yeah, I know Cox HD content is lacking). The Cox technician I spoke with today insisted that, while they will be giving me Multi-stream CableCards (M-Cards), I'll need two of them because Cox doesn't support using them as M-Cards. That sounds absurd.
Is anyone using a TiVo HD with Cox/Omaha? If so, are you able to use a single M-Card for both tuners?
I can't imagine having my parents try to connect a TiVo HD with Cox. The technician basically said there aren't enough CableCard customers for Cox to care. Too bad D* won't have their new TiVo HD until 2H2009. :(
I have a Tivo HD and a Series 3 with cable cards from Cox.
I've asked repeatedly for M-Cards, but they don't have them in this area, so if you have some that would be news to me.
You should only need one M-card if they really have them.
Please post if you do get an M-Card, I'd love to go to only one card per box rather than 2 per S-Cards per box.

That's not actually that humorous unfortunately. Considering how easy it is they manage to use that whole time up.
For me they only brought 1 cable card (for each installation) so I had to wait for them to call another guy and have him bring the other card. Then the both sat down on the floor with their PCs and did some reviewing of documents and emails on how to do the install....UGH. What a joke. I really hope your install is better than both of mine.

JoelWNelson 09-11-08, 10:26 AM Which FSN network does Cox carry on ch. 47? It doesn't match up to anything on the online TV guides (like TitanTV) and sometimes doesn't even match Cox's own Guide. Then last night I figured I could get Cubs-Cardinals (FSNMW-MO) and it was the Royals game produced by FSN-KC. Does Cox actually vary the FSN programming on 47 or is the FSN programming on 47 not any of the "standard" FSN networks that the TV guides list? Joel the reason the Royals are not always on Cox FSN-KC channel 47 is because this season the Royals offered Cable and Sat, a bigger package with around 140 games shown with around 80 of those games is hd, well Cox Omaha chose not to add this upgraded package (No surprise) so we only get around 100 of these games, and I believe this decision by Cox Omaha is why we don't have FSN-hd yet. I call Cox weekly about there decision not to carry Fsn-hd.

It also has to do with the high fees FSNKC charges for the whole package.

smkelly 09-12-08, 11:12 AM Currently, I subscribe to Cox Digital Cable and am paying $78/mo for that and HBO. However, I've come to the realization that I'm not really watching that much TV and it is kind of a wast of money when the few shows I watch are available online on Hulu and so forth.
Since I have a 52" HDTV, I'd really like to have some kind of HD programming. I tried a few different types of indoor antennas, but none really managed to pull in a clear enough signal. I live in a tall building downtown, but I'm not on the top floor. So, I think I'm doomed when it comes to antenna reception. Therefore, I'm looking for cheaper alternatives before I just drop TV altogether.
If I downgrade my Cox package to just Basic or Expanded Basic, will I still receive the HD versions of KETV, KPTM, WOWT, KXVO, and so forth over the coax? Are they available as cllear QAM or do I have to have a digital cable package to get them? I know if I bypass my DVR with my current digital offering, I can pick them up on random and odd channels. Is that the case without the digital tier as well?
Does anyone have any ideas how I can cut my $78/mo cable bill down significantly? All I really need are the broadcast networks, possibly Comedy Central, and that is really about it. I can suppliment the rest with the Internet and Netflix, I think.
Thanks...
HuskerMike 09-12-08, 02:07 PM But I wonder how many customers this would afftect? Did time Warner raise rates?
I can't speak to Time Warner, but Qwest Choice hasn't changed their rates in several years, and they're carrying all 140 Kansas City Royals games on FSN.

So, don't let the sales people and their tech support "experts" tell you that they don't have MCards and that they won't work. The installer took my stack of printed howto's along with him to share with his boss.

We popped them in (one to each TiVo HD) and followed the instructions, called to pair the MCards and they're working great! :D

JoeySmalls 09-14-08, 09:57 PM I heard 11 new HD channels are on the way.
WGNHD on October 15th.
Also FSN-HD and Lifetime Movies HD... I would assume all channels are turned on at the same time so assuming the 15th on these as well.

HiDefHusker 09-15-08, 05:03 PM Here's the reply I got from Cox about SDV.
At this time I cannot give you a lot of information on SDV other than to say it’s not in our plans short term. I know that we do have SDV in some Cox markets but I’m not sure if our roll out will be similar to theirs or not. Things seem to change over time.
We did just complete an upgrade to our network earlier this year which gave us some much needed channel space. Over the coming months you see several channels added to our lineup, specifically HD programming.
ajwees41 09-15-08, 05:23 PM ABC to carry the next Nebraska game
with FSNHD comming soon we might only miss two if Fox picks them up. I hope they don't I can't stand the broadcast crew for FSN college football.
Ronald L M 09-15-08, 06:46 PM I'm wondering why Cox cannot add FSN-Hd on Oct 1 ? Why is Cox dropping Mojo Hd ? I want to see Weather Channel hd, Fox News Hd, Tennis Channel Hd, Disney Channel-Hd.EspnU Hd.

Most logical reason for the seperate launches is contracts.

I wonder how long after this round of channels are added will we get more hd if that info is correct? I am guessing December we will get the rest of the HD to bring it to 60 by the end of the year.

Wait, so you actually got M-cards? They've finally arrived in Omaha, that's great news. Did you have to argue to get the install down to $!5?
I might want to call and get my s-cards swapped out that would save $4 a month.
So did you have any trouble with the installation? Mine seemed to take forever to just get to the point of putting in the cards.
SychoBC 09-16-08, 11:30 AM Does Cox still only allow 1 HDDVR in one household?
HDNewbie1028 09-16-08, 11:52 AM I would think they would allow multiple HD-DVRs. When I called to order my 2nd HD Box from Cox for another bedroom they said it would be a month wait but tried to hard sell me an HD-DVR even though I told them I already had one.
ajwees41 09-16-08, 02:34 PM I just hope Cox adds FSN Hd soon because the Huskers will appear on Fsn-hd this fall with dates TBA.

I wondered when you'd notice. ;) I didn't ask for the discount, but that's what was quoted as part of switching from DIRECTV.
So did you have any trouble with the installation? Mine seemed to take forever to just get to the point of putting in the cards.
The installation went pretty smoothly. The installer said he called too early on one of the TiVo's and had to redo it. The card installation took about 30 minutes for both TiVo's.
EDIT: I had the TiVos completely ready before the installer arrived. They had the latest software installed, guide data downloaded and channels scanned (including the cable channels). Without that, it would've taken much, much longer.
ajwees41 09-16-08, 05:48 PM Anyone have info if AMCHD is real HD, or just a rebrodcast of channel 45?
Charles J P 09-16-08, 08:05 PM I saw a brief mention earlier in the thread but does anyone know about Cox Omaha getting the Big Ten Network. I've been lied to by a couple reps which pisses me off (one of them told me no cable companies could get it because the deal with DirecTV is exclusive for two more years). I know Cox Cleveland got it. I'm sure if this was the Big 12 Network, Cox Omaha would have inked a deal before the network launched. Really pisses me off.

Council Bluffs is served out of the Omaha office. If you notice there is no selection for Iowa, so I thnk that is why Omaha is not getting it.
Put an Council Bluffs zipcode in and the Omaha page popsup.
red5908 09-17-08, 09:07 AM Cox definitely allows multiple HD-DVR boxes per household. I have 2 DVR and 2 non-DVR HD boxes.

I am going to guess that Omaha had the contracts signed, but the channel space wasn't there until the upgrades were complete. They must have set a launch date in the future to make sure there would be channel space.

I think KETV's owner also has a station in KC so they might be first. I don't know/care if WOWT or KMTV go HD thier news is not as infromative as KETV's.
PAULSTORM 09-22-08, 10:57 PM Correct me if I'm wrong....but is this week's game vs Va Tech the first game to be televised in HD from Memorial Stadium? I know there have been other Husker games televised in HD but, I think those have all been either a bowl game or a road game.
Cornhustler 09-23-08, 12:34 AM The Nebraska VS. McNeese State game in Lincoln during the 2002 season was featured on HDNet in full 1080i. Husker'N'Side used the video feed for their online subscribers. The booth featured Kevin Kugler and Larry Punteney as play-by-play and color. Jammal Lord scored three touchdowns and NU won 38-14.
The second HD game from Memorial Stadium that I recall was the NU VS. USC last year in 720P on ABC.

Texas in 06 was HD. Last year's SC game was in HD as well.
JoeySmalls 09-23-08, 06:32 PM Just had a commercial on KETV's 5 pm news. Good ol' Rob was waxing poetic about Brandi. However if you looked closely, the shots of Rob at the desk were in HD!! They must be getting close. On screen graphics at the bottom were also in HD. So they must have the ability to shoot HD in the studio. The stock footage of Brandi in the field were in SD with blurred bars on the side.
Nate_KS 09-23-08, 11:34 PM Good evening all.
I've just jumped into the DTV ocean this past weekend with a new antenna and Zenith DTT901 converter box (more at the Topeka thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14726445#post14726445)). Since my OTA viewing is from about 30 miles south of Beatrice, we've always gotten the Lincoln and Superior stations well even though we're officially part of the Topeka DMA.
As of this past weekend I was getting KOLN-DT 100% and KLKN after sundown on Saturday evening. So far I've not tried any of the Omaha stations. In years past we could get KXVO and at times KPTM, but I've not had a chance to try them.
I'll be tracking this and the Topeka threads for tidbits as the DTV conversion date approaches. :)
Huskerfan 09-25-08, 01:15 AM If I bring my silver sensor down to tailgate Saturday what kind of reception can I expect around Memorial Stadium for HD?
JoelWNelson 09-25-08, 09:46 AM You'll get KOLN and KLKN, but that may be all. I've tested a couple miles east of there and those two are reliable; the rest (i.e. Omaha stations) are spotty.
I think KETV's owner also has a station in KC so they might be first. Doctor Phil and Oprah are brodcast in HD nationally not local just like Jeporady and Wheel of Fortune. KMTV also has Dr. Phil and Oprah in HD.

Thanks! Do you know if I'll get them in HD?
If the network programming is in HD, you'll see it in HD -- KLKN (DT 31) and KOLN (DT 25) carry the same HD programming as their Omaha ABC and CBS counterparts. As of yet neither does local HD though rumor has it KOLN is close.
FYI...KLKN will be doing a Husker pre-game special from 6 PM to 7 PM.
ajwees41 09-25-08, 11:32 PM FYI...KLKN will be doing a Husker pre-game special from 6 PM to 7 PM.

Doctor Phil and Oprah are brodcast in HD nationally not local just like Jeporady and Wheel of Fortune. KMTV also has Dr. Phil and Oprah in HD.Technically true, but these are syndicated shows and many stations still don't have the infrastructure to go beyond carrying the main network feed "live" in HD. Be thankful your stations do.
ajwees41 09-26-08, 02:57 PM Technically true, but these are syndicated shows and many stations still don't have the infrastructure to go beyond carrying the main network feed "live" in HD. Be thankful your stations do.
Dline my point was they probably get the feed for Dr. Phill and Oprah from Satelite, and splice it in to their network feed Like KMTV does which also doesn't have anything local in HD yet. I am still thinking KETV,WOWT,KPTM(if they get the station sold) and then KMTV will be in that order for local HD covarge.
ajwees41 09-26-08, 03:12 PM WOWT's 6.2 it looks like we are going to get universalsports on 6.2 and on Cox 120
http://www.universalsports.tv/Universal_Sports_on_TV.html
the above website lists it as 6.3, but on cox 120 which is 6.2.
Dline my point was they probably get the feed for Dr. Phill and Oprah from Satelite, and splice it in to their network feed Like KMTV does which also doesn't have anything local in HD yet. I am still thinking KETV,WOWT,KPTM(if they get the station sold) and then KMTV will be in that order for local HD covarge.Technically both network and syndication come down on satellite, but in very different ways. Pretty much everyone has the ability to take a live, dedicated network HD feed to air. Syndication is generally taken down on separate satellite receivers and most of it must be recorded for broadcast at the agreed-to time, which requires HD-capable receivers on those satellites, HD-capable routing equipment, HD-capable recording and playback equipment, and a master control switcher which is able to do more than switch between net HD and upconverted analog.
None of this stuff is cheap.
So my point was, it's encouraging that Des Moines and Omaha stations are taking those steps.
HD local news, on the other hand, is several steps beyond that -- the control room switcher, studio cameras, and graphics must be upgraded at a minimum. Add field cameras, editors and remote equipment if you don't want pillars on field footage like most network newscasts have.
Gary Omaha 09-28-08, 03:38 PM Technically both network and syndication come down on satellite, but in very different ways.
Actually, in periods of too-much-time-on-my-hands, I've thought about this. I assumed that certain daily syndicated programs are available off the satellite at multiple -- but specific -- times, and the local affiliates treat these as "live" satellite feeds (just as they would a network feed). So, they wouldn't have to process the signals at all but just push the HD feeds to the transmitter.
Don't our engineering friends from the various channels monitor this discussion group? Perhaps they could provide the real answer!
JoelWNelson 09-28-08, 11:45 PM I'd heard WOWT was working on HD weather graphics, but they're clearly not installed yet. Was watching Sunday Night Football and they dropped down to SD to announce a severe thunderstorm near Columbus -- at the far western end of the counties covered by WOWT's weather department, and actually outside of the WOWT primary contour. They stayed in SD for the remainder of the game.
JoelWNelson 09-29-08, 12:06 AM Look like KOLN's new studio is ready for HD. In this video (special player such as Adobe Media Player or Real Player may be needed), the graphics appear to be native 16x9 on the HDTVs on set. I no longer live within their coverage area, so can't check for myself to see what is being aired, but in the news videos on their website it also appears that the in-studio feed is HD. Output is apparently still SD.

I believe that's incorrect. WOWT has apparently replaced the 62O lineup with Universal Sports programming on 6.2, though the channel is still branded as 62O at commercial breaks. I haven't seen any of the "usual" programming on 62O -- it's all Universal Sports now.

for some reason comedy hd is not launching on th 15th info from csr.
HuskerMike 10-01-08, 01:47 PM Except for some syndicated shows at 6 am, 6.2 has been Universal Sports for about 3 weeks now. Most of the programming has been reruns from the Olympics, unfortunately.

What can I say, I'm a weather nut . . .
I miss it when KETV had 24x7 real Doppler radar before they had weather now. The radar that comes up every once in a while now is hard to read, its fuzzy and is not on very long. The radar on the side bar is also hard to read as it shows Green for rain on a Green background. Also there Temp reporting seems to be behind by an hour.
I want KMTV to use there sub channel to show there radar or a news replay, sports news, or something useful.
Just my suggestions as I know the TV stations do sometimes read these posts.

GretnaHD 10-02-08, 12:27 PM no they launched only NHL network, but after talking to a csr yesterday they are trying get premission to launch FSNHD before Nebraska plays. The rest of the channel changes minus ComedyHD are supposed to occur on October 15th.
I have been requesting this for a few years. It makes sense that Cox carry FSNHD due to FSN airing Big 12 games. It is about time, hopefully they can get the permission to get it on before the game. Thanks for all the info everyone, I didn't even know about all the HD channels coming on Oct. 15th!
GretnaHD 10-02-08, 12:32 PM Does anyone know if the Comedy HD channel being added is and HD version of Comedy Central or something entirely different, thanks for any info.

I would think it's Comedy Central, but like I posted for some reason there is a problem with that and AMCHD since they are not launching those two yet.
DarthhuskeR 10-03-08, 04:30 PM Anybody else here frustrated with Time Warner Cable's lack of hd channels here in Lincoln? I called the other day and they told me that there is no more bandwidth in their system and they will not be adding anymore hd channels for a while. Is direct t.v. the way to go in this city? There are lots of trees in my neighborhood.

Interesting that they use the lack of bandwidth excuse, since they obviously had the bandwidth to add the 4 temporary HD channels during the Olympics.

Out of curiosity I was looking at the TWC HD offerings in Lincoln yesterday and was surprised how few channels were available. Satellite does certainly appear to be the way to go. Also seeing their pricing for TV/Internet/phone... I'm not sure how TWC keeps customers in Lincoln! I'm not very familiar with DirecTV but do know that all of my family members in Lincoln (all in low-lying areas with lots of trees) have Dish service through Windstream and are satisfied. They say it rarely ever goes out -- maybe twice over the last year, and only briefly during very heavy rain.
I wanted to get TurboHD through Dish here in Omaha but my apartment complex wouldn't allow it. Oh well... Cox is adding more channels so I'm happy for now.
huskers4life 10-03-08, 09:19 PM i sent an email to time warner a couple weeks ago and got a completely different answer; this is what i got:
Thank you so much for your inquiry about expanding HD channels at Time Warner Cable. I understand, and echo your concerns about the seemingly slow to grow HD lineup. However, I have some good news to share. At the end of this year, around the middle of December we will be adding 4 new HD channels including: Disney, HGTV, National Geographic and Versus. This is a variety of channels that serve a variety of audiences and we feel this is a good start. Our additions will not end there. In 2009 we will be adding many more networks in HD. We are ccurrently woking out carriage agreements with network operators, as it is our goal to bring our customers as much HD as possible at no extra charge.
Again, thank you for your inquiry, and thank you for being a great customer. We appreciate all of our customer feedback, and take it very seriously.
If you have specific HD networks that you would like to request, feel free to send us another email (or reply to this one) as we do track those requests and are taking them into consideration when we add networks.
so i'm kinda confused on whats going on here with time warner because there are two completely different answers

That is interesting. I guess they tell different people different answers depending on how upset they are. Usually, I would believe a company as large as Time Warner would have a general answer to this question but my faith has been shaken time and time again. This is the same Time Warner that refused to fix the problems with the DVR's when they were Beta testing Mystro. My DVR still doesn't work great and we've had this problem for over a year now.
Ironically enough, if you browse some of the other Time Warner Markets, you'll see that there are some very small cities (I don't remember which ones) that offer twice to three times as many channels as here in Lincoln. Lincoln has a quarter million people in it now and deserves to have decent service. I find it hard to believe that they have carriage deals for a certain channel in one city but not another, even though it is one large company. Sorry to ramble on but I've been frustrated with them for a long time and it seems like they just make up one excuse after another.
ajwees41 10-04-08, 04:20 PM Darth the carriage deals for Time Warner are probably the same cox does national, but each system also to agree on them. just like FSN and cox Omaha get FSN with a few Kansas City Royals games, were Time Warner chose to pay the full price and got the whole game package.
ajwees41 10-04-08, 04:21 PM Joel how many days of guide info on you HD box? we were getting 7 days, but starting today it's only 6

I wonder if they are having guide problems again? Our dvr 3416 used to store a weeks worth of data, but since yesterday 6 day and it used to download automatically, but now I have to reload it to try to get 7 days.
JoelWNelson 10-06-08, 08:59 AM I haven't personally seen it yet, but I heard that KETV now has local HD ads advertising their news coverage. Anyone else seen these? If it's true then it must mean they are very close to local HD news.
KOLN also seems close but I think KETV is going to be first. I'd been saying for a while WOWT would be first since their news has seemed to have a sharper picture (digitally encoded?) for a year or two -- but since they don't yet have HD weather graphics, it seems they still have a ways to go before they actually output a local HD product. They still seem to be doing something different from the other channels, though, as when I save a screengrab using my computer, I get a 720x480 image from KETV and KMTV while for WOWT it is 1440x1080 (almost as if it's HD cropped to a 4:3 aspect ratio).
As far as KPTM... when they first started broadcasting a local 16x9 HD picture (with the bright blue sidebars) I thought they'd be first, but they've apparently been content to just stay that way and not go all the way with HD cameras. The financial issues there can't have helped the situation.

ajwees41 10-06-08, 12:20 PM Do you happen to have the link to the article on the FSN getting turned on early? That is awesome news!!
there is no article they just changed the start date listed on http://www.cox.com/Omaha/Digitalcable/dclineup.asp
webcombo 10-06-08, 01:36 PM Thanks for the link. I didn't even think to go there.
As far as the KETV HD goes, I did see the ads in question last night, on their hour long 10pm newscast. I actually rewound it, because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was strange because they don't show any commercials on HD, even the ones that are made in HD, but they were able to "turn on the HD signal" for their commercial. I guess I am confused on how that works. One thing I noticed, is that although the picture was excellent, sharp, good color, very detailed, I noticed some pixelation happening during fast motion. But all in all, I am happy to see that they are moving in this direction. It is the only news I watch, so I can't wait for it to be crystal clear!!
Yesterday at the Palin rally, there was HD uplink truck parked outside near the KETV and other vehicles, anyone know if that was from one of the local stations or not?

Did it have any markings? I would think ketv, wowt, kmtv would do do HD with thier own trucks if they could maybe it was CNN or MSNBC

Too bad they aren't putting it on ch. 747. Even though it's labeled as VERSUS/GOLF HD it seems like it's almost always Golf programming.

looking at the guide it looks like 747 is golf during the day and versus at night.
If you open up TitanTV.com and look at channel 747 on that date and time, you will find 'College Football - Teams Unannounced'. That Husker Game is supposed to be televised in HD. I tried putting a link to the guide showing this here, but the 3 post rule prevents me.
The guide is fixed now, goes the normal distance.
WOWT is indeed broadcasting news in HD as someone had noticed with a screen capture, although in a 4:3 format. The video is not in HD at this time, but the stream is, along with minimal graphics (mainly just the little 6 logo in the bottom left hand corner). The stream is ready for local HD at will (and partially in use). The reason HD weather warnings are not in place is because of the software they use from Baron not being setup for it. Whether that's a shortcoming of the software, just not the most current software, or a lack of licensing with the software, I don't know.
The channel changes with Comedy and FSN were announced in the Omaha World Herald. FSN will be on 745 starting on the 9th.
JoelWNelson 10-07-08, 11:42 AM I heard Golf HD and Versus HD are being split into two channels in some markets this December. Wonder if that may affect Omaha... anyone else heard anything?
Anyone who has a carriage agreement for Versus/Golf will automatically be given rights to the separate Versus and Golf channels.

Comedy Central in HD has been delayed. It was in the OWH a day or two ago. Can't be sure, but am pretty sure the Huskers are slated for HD on Versus. No use in trying to figure it out now, so we'll just have to wait and see.

They have no contract with AMCHD yet. HDNet and HDNet Movies--we will not be providing this service. These are premium channels that require a fee. We are focused on offering programming that our customers do not have to pay additional fees to receive.
huskers4life 10-08-08, 09:20 PM in talking with time warner today, they said the husker game will be broadcast on FSN-HD in lincoln even though it says "off air" right now...don't know about anyone else in lincoln, but thats some good news right there!
nitty316 10-09-08, 09:48 AM That's a good sign. Those FSN HD channels for the most part are off air unless there is an HD event on. They've been changing that lately though and providing their other programming in non HD, but digital quality.

I don't think the Tivo sofware will be available until 2009-2010. They are supposed to replace the current HD/HDDVR software with a guide made by NDS which looks better than the current software.

I'm good friends with Jon Schuetz's son, so I asked Jon point blank about when KETV is planning to do the local newscasts in HD. He said he's been rattling the engineer's cages, but Hearst-Argyle has no plans to move them to HD until spring 2009 at the earliest. Economy affects them just like everyone else, apparently.

the tower collapsing couldn't have helped. I bet if it didnt't they would have been first.
videocharmer 10-14-08, 08:44 PM So, over the weekend it appears Omaha lost a TV station.
Can't seem to find any news on the subject, but the most recent article suggested that Pappas and their TuVision division was running out of time. They were to sell off 13 stations by the end of the year but their asking prices were making that impossible.
The hammer must have come down from the bankruptcy court and KAZO didn’t make it. A look at the tuvision.com’s website now shows KAZO and KAZJ grayed out, and the words “coming soon” as if new owners were afoot.
Since all the local news agencies are oddly mum on the issue, wondering if anyone here knows the scoop.
