I know this thread is all about Local service, but I figured it was a great thread to ask a local question.

I have a Hearthstone Home, the den is below grade (ground) and so when I sent to mount a plasma mount on the wall this weekend I realized there is no studding behind the wall I am mounting the plasma on. It goes 3/4 in Sheet rock, 1 1/2 in insulation then block.....the screws and anchors that came with the mount worked ok, but I did not truct them so I sued about 5 TapCon concrete screws as well......think it will hold???

So the DW is just glued to insulation?

I justt watched a free video and evan almighty on a DCT 3416 via HDMI no problems. Did you try rebooting the box?

Yes... no change. It's actually cut out a couple times during the Nebraska-New Mexico game on ESPNU as well. Wondering if the box is malfunctioning or if some copy-protection thing is triggered by the HDMI -- no problems if I connect via component.

you need to reboot the box to correct the time issue.

Okay, stupid question - how do I reboot? Just unplug it for a couple minutes and plug it back in?

From what I can tell yes, there might be some sort of fasteners from drywall to insulation to block but I cannot tell

yeah, as heavy as drywall is, you'd think there must be some firring strips or what not involved in addition to glue.

From my experience with tapcons I'd say 5 is enough, but if it falls down, I don't want any of the blame

Still having issues with this. At least today I am actually seeing a visible error message on screen. It says "The HD Content Protection of your display has been compromised. Please connect your display using YPbPr connection." This is displayed for a couple seconds and then everything goes black.

With MLB baseball season just a couple of weeks away wondering if Cox Omaha will add
1. MLB network HD
2. Add MLB extra innings HD
3. Carry all the KC Royals games in Sd and HD. (Last year Cox Omaha only showed some of the games and no hd)

Cox Omaha really need to step!!! I wish Omaha had Verizon Fios. Omaha would have double the Hd and more programming choices.

Anybody know what happened to KLKN's digital signal during the storm today? It looks like they went out ~4, and came back sometime around 5:30ish. Weren't showing up on Dish or on the antenna, so I'm assuming it was a problem with the digital transmitter? Anyone know anything more than that? Pretty bad time to have your signal drop off...right in the middle of a tornado warning. :-P

I noticed it as well. Was working in Lincoln during the afternoon and connected my USB TV receiver about 4:05 PM. Was getting 90% from 6, 7, 15, and 42... about 50% from 3... about 10% on 10, which is the new normal since they returned to VHF, and 0% on KLKN. A well-shielded building wasn't the cause since the Omaha stations were coming in very well, so I ended up following coverage of a tornado warning for Lancaster County from the Omaha stations.

I had heard on KTMX-FM and KZKX-FM that the area around Goehner was getting pounded pretty hard as well, and both 8 and 10 have their transmitter sites out that way (with KLKN a few miles to the northwest of KOLN). My guess is KLKN temporarily lost power to their transmitter or suffered a power surge/lightning strike.

Also noticed that even with a tornado warning affecting Lancaster County, KCWL 51 didn't even have a warning message up. Fox 4&17 at least had a crawl and map going.

Yeah...it sounds like Goehner/Beaver Crossing was getting it pretty bad (although not as bad as Eagle later). I was guessing it was either some equipment damage, or perhaps a power outage. However, 10/11 was still on, and you would think 8 would have a generator out there.... I'm sure we'll never know, but makes you wonder... :-P

wouldn't the problem be at the station, not at the transmitter if "dish" was also out? I would think that the station would transmit their signal to dish (and even directv) from their station versus 30 miles away....both KOLN/KGIN and KLKN have a crap ton of dishes outside their station

It seems that Dish is picking up an OTA signal somewhere and uplinking that as their HD signal, at least for some of the stations in this area. Often if it does lose reception (which has happened occasionally), you'll see a "yellow screen" which is very similar to what the Dish hardware does when it loses the OTA signal (but you can tell that the satellite signal is coming through ok). (Which would make sense that Dish uses their own hardware on the uplink too). While it would be the best, I don't think that Dish has a fiber link or anything to each of the stations. :( Oh, well...a lot of that is supposition without knowing anyone "on the inside", but that's the way it seems...

DirecTV has an uplink location in Hastings. Would guess that may be where Dish uplinks as well...

Apparently it has to do with a 'broadcast flag' that is preventing us from watching 'American Idol' and the NASCAR races on KPTM. I know its OLD but this is the first I have had problems with it. I got wind of the update during a search of the AVS forum archives.

no I mean Discovery is channel 37, but the HD version is 812. If the channel is in the 2-70 put the hd version in the 700 range digital channels would be in the 800's along with the channels that have no nonhd channel like Discovery HD Theater.

Not to argue about it but I think it makes more sense to group channels based on genre. We're nearing a point where the HD choices are almost a full lineup in themselves, so having similar channels grouped together makes more sense to me than having to remember the location of the HD channel's SD counterpart. Moving forward, grouping HD by genre would seem better than grouping HD channels based on the SD tier.

Having moved into Omaha last year (from the semi-rural Sarpy suburbs) the channel lineup I've learned is the HD one... the analog and SD counterparts don't really ring a bell. I only go below ch. 705 if I want to watch a program that's not available on a HD channel. So the current lineup seems to make sense with 700-719 being locals, 720s being news, 730s and 740s sports, 750s a mix of drama and comedy programming, 760s TV movie channels, 770s home/garden type stuff, etc. Only ones that don't necessarily fit are some of the channels in the 750s and 820s/850s as it seems like those could be organized or reassigned... such as it would make sense for WGN and TBS to go together as they have similar formats...

I have to agree with Joel on this one, athought at first I thought adding 700 to the channels numbers would be better. I'm used to the HD channel numbers now and have most in a FAV setting on the remote so I like the way the HD channels are grouped better than the < 70 channels. Having said that I'm not sure why they switched 29/30 to the other way for the ESPN channels. I think the whole HD lineup config is setup for pay tiers really, not sure when it will happen but it will happen, I'm sure.

The reason that the two Epsn's are like that is because they didn't want to move Espn 31 to 30 when they moved Espn because that would be to much work work is what they said when I asked them that same question On the HD channel suggestion if they group them fine, but why not use the SD channel number with the the 7 or 8 if there is one already? Does anyone know if Cox is picking up all the Royals games this year? This is an article from last year on what I'm referring to:

Published Friday April 11, 2008
Differing TV packages leave some baseball fans frustrated
BY MITCH SHERMAN
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

If Omaha-area television viewers were upset over missing the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees on Wednesday and Thursday nights, they should get used to it.

The two games were among 40 this season offered by Fox Sports Net-Kansas City (formerly FSN Midwest) that Omaha's Cox Communications elected not to purchase.

Cox will air about 100 Royals games this year, including tonight against Minnesota, the same total as last year.

FSN-KC added 40 games from the 2008 schedule, negotiating terms with individual cable and satellite companies. Among the providers set to show the entire 140-game Royal slate: Time Warner Cable in Lincoln, DirecTV, Dish Network and Omaha's Qwest Choice TV.

Kristin Peck, vice president of government and public affairs for Cox in Omaha, said executives here — not at company headquarters in Atlanta — decided on the abbreviated schedule.

"We understand that we have a group of people in Omaha who do have a passion for baseball and the Royals," Peck said.

The costs incurred by Cox to broadcast the additional 40 games, however, would have been passed on to all customers, Peck said, and were not in the best interest of Cox's entire subscriber base.

In Lincoln, no rate increase followed the purchase of the full schedule of games, said Ann Shrewsbury, director of public affairs for Time Warner's Nebraska division.

"Realize that all of the negotiations that programmers do with different companies are completely different," Shrewsbury said.

Shrewsbury said Royals broadcasts have been a "big thing over the years" for Time Warner customers. With the Royals playing well this month and former Nebraska star Alex Gordon in the lineup, she said, interest remains high.

The Lincoln company is also looking at the option of providing games this year in high definition. FSN is offering the Royals in high definition 88 times, including all 40 of the games not shown by Cox, according Geoff Goldman, media relations manager for FSN-KC.

Peck said Cox had not received many complaints over its scheduling decision.

Cox customers in Wichita, Kan., and Topeka, Kan., are in a similar situation. Charter Communications, which serves many communities in central and western Nebraska, also opted for the shortened schedule.

K.C. matchups with Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday are among the 40 missing games. On Thursday night, Cox viewers missed a pitching appearance by another ex-Nebraska star, Joba Chamberlain, who threw a scoreless 11/3 innings in the Yankees' 6-1 win over the Royals.

Instead, "Sport Science," "Best Damn Top 50 Special," "FSN Presents: Nothin' But Knockouts" and "The FSN Final Score" aired during the baseball game.

Goldman said FSN-KC remains in discussions with Cox to reach a deal for the remaining schedule of additional games. But according to Peck, don't expect to see them on Cox in Omaha.

"Not to my knowledge," Peck said. "It's my understanding that we have opted not to take them."

I am finally making the switch. Cox's squabbles on getting the Royals on here in Omaha was the final straw. I started looking more at DIRECT this weekend and decided enough was enough. That and Cox said they had no idea if or when they would have FSNHD or USAHD or SCIFIHD etc. I just decided, for what I want, I am not going to ever be pleased with Cox, so why continue worrying about it. If I spend a little more with DTV, that's okay, I'm getting what I want. I have never seen the Royals in HD, that's insane and will soon change. The only HD channel I am losing is NETHD, but I can get that OTA, and they really don't show all that much in HD anyway. I had always stayed with Cox because I thought it was cheaper, but it really isn't. I'm hoping to get my install scheduled today. I'm excited.

I also normally get the baseball package, and when I saw that Direct gets a handful of those games in HD as well, it really became a no brainer. I usually spend $20 a Sunday in the Fall going out to watch the 20x17 = $340. I can now order the NFL at my house and not worry about smelling like smoke when I get home. I haven't been at home during the day on a Sunday during the Fall for 4 years.

Nearly a year into my switch and here are my thoughts:

The Good:

For sports, DIRECTV really is the best out there. I had the NFL, NBA, MLB & Mega March Madness all in HD. Cox only offers the NBA and MLB out of those 4 and not in HD.

I am a WWE fan as some of you know, I've been able to order WWE PPV's in HD. Granted it's a little bit more pricey, but that's only the price to watch in HD, it would be the same for Cox if they were to offer them in HD.

I'm not sure what channels I get with DIRECT that I would not get with Cox, I don't think it's many, all I know though is that there are a lot of channels.

NFL ticket is sweet, they are letting people pay $27. from Jan through October to get it for next year. Sounds like a burder, but it beats paying $54 over the course of 5 months.

One of my worries when I get DIRECT was NETHD, they added that a few months ago.

OTA adapter is pretty cool, it allows me to bring in OTA channels that DIRECT does not offer into my program guide and allows me to DVR them. They gave me that free ($50 value).

Channels and Channels in HD that Cox doesn't have or just recently got that I've had for a while: NBATV HD, Big 10HD, Mountain Network, CBS College, ESPN News (HD), MLB HD, NHL HD, Golf HD (not sure if Cox has that), Fox News HD, CNN HD (Not sure on Cox), and a few others.

Tons of On Demand Channels.

All the Royals games. The Fox Sports package for Pac-10 Late games. All the FSN's in HD.

The Bad:

I'm paying a bit more, I know that. I think that's because I constantly am paying a sports package off. I also have like 7 boxes because of my basement where I have a bunch of TV's. With Cox I was able to just split the wires and had no reason for the extra boxes.

No WGN HD, no ESPNU HD.

No HBO On Demand, no WWE On Demand.

No College Gameplan in HD, no Full Court in HD.

All in all, I'm glad I switch.

it is the only channel besides 54 aka TBN

that will be on analog after june 17 cause both are LPTV stations

Hey, but at least you Cox schmucks got to see Nebraska-Wichita St. baseball. I had to drive there last night to see it. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

(Just kidding. I love that DirecTV carries all of the Royals broadcasts, including the max in HD. I remember in 2003, the first year of RSTN, I was on Dish and they didn't carry RSTN until the Royals started fading in July after racing to the division lead in the 1st half)

So did the April storm take KPTM off the air today ( Sunday) or is it more than just the ending of the 4PM news cast. First noticed about noon today that I was not getting a broadcast from them over the air. Checked the local via Dish Network and not there either. Also checked their sister station 15 and it is not seen either place too. Anyone have an idea what happened? Are they seen on COX? I think it was established that somehow Cox was broadcasting KPTM-DT and KXVO-DT, but that they were off the air in broadcast form. (Probably because there is a fibre link between the Pappas studios and the Cox facilities 5 blocks away...)

They are both broadcasting over the air again.

I don't think they could have easily done a cutin unless Cox put up an overlay (can they do that?) as they would have been carrying FSNMW and would have had to switch to a different feed (FSNKC?) at 1, I think.

I assume this applies to Omaha, as well...

From the Topeka Capital Journal:

Full Royals TV slate now on Cox

April 8, 2009 - 12:12pm
The Kansas City Royals entire 140-game television package will now be available to subscribers of Cox Cable, the largest TV provider in Topeka and much of Kansas.

Geoff Goldman, a spokesman for the Fox Sports Kansas City network that originates all Royals telecasts, announced Wednesday that an agreement had been reached between the network and the cable company that will allow the telecast of the Wednesday night Royals at Chicago game, as well as Friday's home opener against the Yankees at the renovated Kauffman Stadium.

Until the two sides reached their agreement, Wednesday's game and the Friday home opener, as well as Sunday's series finale against New York, were not part of the 100-game package Cox agreed to carry.

Fox Sports KC expanded the Royals TV schedule from 100 to 140 games last year. The full package was carried on satellite TV providers, but Cox chose not pick up the additional 40 games, citing an added expense it did not want to pass on to its customers.

Goldman said 99 of the 140 games would be broadcast in high definition.

No GAME-HD anytime soon on Cox...

Thank you for your inquiry. Cox is committed to providing the best customer service possible.

At this time I know of no plans to add or show any of the MLB Extra Innings package in HD. We are using our bandwidth at this time to add HD programming that all of our customers can view and not just our seasonal or sports packages. That does not mean that we will not at some time in the future this could not change but not at this current time. The MLB Network will be added in HD at the end of April but not the package. If there is anything else we can do for you, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Does anyone know if Cox is ever going to change the guide to actually say there is programming on FSNHD or will it always read "OFF AIR". I know there's been talk about having the Royals games in HD, but the guide doesn't indicate tomorrow night's game is in HD according to the guide.

I even had my unit unplugged for 24 hours (had carpeting put in the family room so had to unplug everything) so I know my DVR doesn't need to be rebooted.

In general it is rare that my guide shows that anything is programmed for FSNHD - my DVR box always says "Off Air" in the guide, even if there is programming.

Does FSN not show a lot of HD - I knew at one time they didn't, but I also had read that by the 1st Quarter of 09 they would be broadcasting everything in HD. Perhaps they meant only live games, and not regular programming that they upconvert?

I'll try it. The guide usually goes out 6-7 days. I guess I was hoping there was more HD on FSN. There were times this winter when the guide would say there was a basketball game in HD but there wasn't, and times when it said "OFF AIR" and there was something on. Just thought there would be more HD content. I'm greedy. :D

I have several Harmony remotes which I use with Cox boxes and I am very happy with them.

The remotes do not have dedicated buttons for DVR List, Live, or Swap. Some have A and B buttons, but no C. However, it is quite easy to program buttons for these functions using the Harmony web-based software.

Not quite true. KKAZ-CA 24, KOHA-LP 48, and K53EY also won't have to convert on June 17th so they will continue indefinitely in analog. (Or in the case of KOHA, intermittent analog test pattern every so often.)

TuVision is not a.k.a. Azteca America. The two are entirely different networks. And who's to say there's "nothing good" on -- I'm sure there is a demographic who does appreciate AA programming over, say, Telemundo. Just like various people have various preferences among the English-language networks.

The owner isn't apparently doing anything with it right now, but they aren't offering it for sale and there's no record of someone approaching the owner to buy it. It's as if it doesn't even exist even though their signal could actually reach much of the metro if they were on the air.

54 is the Council Bluffs TBN... there's also TBN 53 in Omaha (covers about a 3-4 mile radius around 96th and L). Though for TBN fans it's also on the Cox Digital Cable "variety" tier. Channel 278, I think (?) -- I never watch it but know it's there.

I'm looking for a little advice. Although I did try to search before I posted, I may not be searching for the right thing, so please bear with me if this has already been answered.

I am a long time holdout over HDTV service. I have two HDTVs that I use mainly for gaming and Blu-ray/HD-DVD, and I have analog cable through Cox. I resisted the nuisance of having yet another box attached to my TVs (I really do like to use the TV remote to change channels.) I know I can get a multi-function remote to simplify things, but for how little TV I watch, I couldn't justify the investment.

The wife has been working on me to get with the times and get some kind of HD service in the house. I've compared packages and options and DVR setups and prices and pretty much everything I can factually discover over the phone and on the Internet.

Here's where I need the help: I have narrowed the list down to Dish Network and Cox HD. I don't care so much about channels, or DVRs or even the monthly fee. I want to know about the actual picture quality and user friendliness. Most of the comparisons I can find either focus on channels available, or are so far out of date that I doubt they can still be relevant. I know that both Cox and Dish have dramatically increased their HD offerings in the last couple of years; have they improved the quality, or has it actually decreased because the transmission line is getting crowded?

Particularly I would like to know, does Cox HD still have a lot of MPEG blocking type artifacts? I remember that being a real bugbear for me when I last looked into it around 2002. Also, does it still occasionally take several seconds to "lock on" when changing channels? Does Dish fare any better in these categories?

I would love to hear thoughts and advice from anyone who has actually made the comparison in person. Thanks in advance.

Actually I was referring to what I saw in the stores a few years ago. I've never actually had any HD service.

When you say I'll notice it more on Dish I get the impression that it was improved but not eliminated. Did you mean that they both still have a little, but it's more prominent on Dish? And is this comparison fairly recent?

The other big question I had was about the channel changing. I noticed it seemed to take forever to switch between channels. Has that been fixed?

You'll notice more on dish since you actually have a dish at your house while cox has a large dish and most likely fiber that doesn't seem to go down in weather. Cox is all digital now if you have a box. The speed is faster than when the box was doing analog also. what model of box was it that you saw?

The owner isn't apparently doing anything with it right now, but they aren't offering it for sale and there's no record of someone approaching the owner to buy it. It's as if it doesn't even exist even though their signal could actually reach much of the metro if they were on the air.

54 is the Council Bluffs TBN... there's also TBN 53 in Omaha (covers about a 3-4 mile radius around 96th and L). Though for TBN fans it's also on the Cox Digital Cable "variety" tier. Channel 278, I think (?) -- I never watch it but know it's there.

When browsing to record a discovery channel show the other day I noticed it came up as available on Discovery HD BNP (channel 1101). Anyone know what this means? If you go to the channel it comes up, but the screens is black... however all the program info is there. time warner is suppose to be adding somewhere around 10-12 HD channels in the next several months...although i don't remember what the list had, i think Discovery HD was included in that list along with ESPNEWS, USA, CNBC, and numerous others

it's still in the 4:3 format...however...it appears that their graphics are indicating more of a direction towards the 16:9 HD. Being that WOWT and KOLN/KGIN are owned by the same company (Gray Communications), i wouldn't be surprised if if they aren't the first to convert...hopefully its soon.

I may be misunderstanding your question and / or be stating the obvious here but the HDMI cable carries both the video and audio portion of the program. Do you want or need to run separate feeds to your TV and to your receiver for sound? I stream video from my laptop via an HDMI and I run it as an input to my TV and then have a L/R Audio connection feeding the audio to my surround sound receiver fromt he TV. This is the same audio feed that I use if I am just watching TV fromt he TV tuner. If I use the TV only speakers I only need the HDMI cables. Another way I could do it is to run the HDMI from the laptop to the receiver and then refeed to the TV with a second HDMI from the receiver to the TV. I do not do this for the laptop since I have no additional HDMI inputs on the receiver. I feed the BluRay and HDDVD player to the TV this way. Hope this helps and doesn’t confuse.

Right now I have an HDMI going from the cox box to the TV(HDMI 1 on TV). RBG from cox box to reveicer (Line 2).

I do not know if the receiver has HDMI or not, it is about 5 years old.....

So basically if I am watching TV, TV on HDMI 1 input and receiver on Line 2

I'm not for certain on this, but I don't think KPTM has the capability to overlay HD graphics on Fox network programming. It's a limitation of the way Fox distributes their HD feed. It's why KPTM always cuts to the SD feed to display the Children's Hospital bug in the middle of shows. They don't have any problems during HD syndicated programming, though.

I don't know about KPTM, but I know that WDAF Fox 4 in KC also does NOT have the ability to overlay Fox HD... saw it regress to SD during the Talladega race yesterday for storm alerts.

FOX 4 - WDAF in Kansas City is the only KC TV station that can't do HD graphics. They also are the only station in the market without HD local news.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think I've read that WDAF, when it does pass HD programming, basically is taking that programming from the HD Receiver directly to the transmitter. They do put a "FOX 4" logo in the bottom right of the screen though in HD programming that you never see any other time. When they switch from HD to SD (even on commercial breaks) it is a pretty rough transition. This was all put in place when it was a FOX O&O too.

It's how the Fox splicer works. It supports splicing in a bug in the bottom right and a static ID in the middle at the bottom. Otherwise, no local on-screen overlays are supported.

Splicer 2.0 is coming later this year and with a software upgrade early-to-mid next year will support all the crawls you're used to without dropping from HD.

I actually emailed Children's Hospital and told them how badly they were being served by their advertising on KPTM since KPTM insists on disrupting the entire show for a very disgraceful jolt from HD with Dolby 5.1 to the junky SD and stereo sound. Per Marty Beerman, VP of Marketing, this is what the situation is:

"They (KPTM) put in a request to Fox Network the last time we had a complaint and it looks like in order for them to receive the feed differently than how they are getting it now, the Network has to send them a new splicer. They just confirmed with the Network today that they will not be able to do that until May because of sweeps and American Idol, they don't want them switching anything until after.
If in the future you receive any complaints (which I am sure you will) let them know that the problem is being addressed and will be taken care of in May."

Sorry, primetime6. To answer your question, "Does that sound right?", everything you typed makes sense except "RBG from cox box to receiver". You already have video thru the HDMI to the TV, so instead of RBG (which is component video) you probably meant red/white composite audio. If that is the case, you are set up fine for cable and DVD with audio from the surround sound system. I have a similar setup except I don't have the SS on all the time so I use the TV speakers.

To answer your original question (which probably fits better in one of the A/V forums, but, I know, you trust us Midwest guys more), which I think was how to get audio from your laptop to the surround sound receiver, you should look for an adapter cord for MP3 players (found in any discount store or RatShack). It looks like it has a mini headphone jack plug at one end (because that's what you'll plug it into on your HP laptop: headphone) and red/white composite plugs on the other end (which you'll plug into your receiver in the open "outlet" you mentioned).

The other bugeater was saying your TV could feed sound to your receiver if it has audio out. Then the HDMI from laptop to TV would suffice.

I would like to suggest that if your receiver accepts optical audio, you will enjoy better sound from Cox programming by replacing the red/white cables (you called them RBG) with either fiber or coax optical audio. Then you get true digital sound just as with a DVD with Dolby encoded. Red/white is only two channels which your receiver has to fake into circle surround, but most network programming is 5.1 which means each speaker gets its own orders direct from the show's audio producer (breaking glass from behind you, etc.), not what the chip in your receiver thinks is appropriate.

Awesome!!! I think I said it wrong, it is a Red Green Blue RGB, I think it is better than red/white......it is going from the receiver to the TV

NTV Back on DirecTV in Mid-May

Good news for our NTV audience.
Within a couple of weeks, NTV will be on the channel line-up for DirecTV HD subscribers in central and western Nebraska.
DirecTV will begin carrying the NTV digital high-def signal by about May 13th.
Since last fall, DirecTV subscribers who upgraded to HD service have not had NTV's signal.
This announcement ends months of negotiation.
"It's been a long process. Since last fall subscribers who upgraded to digital service have not been able to get our signal. Now everyone will be able to get it," NTV General Manager Vince Barresi.
Attorney General Jon Bruning got involved after numerous NTV viewers complained about not
seeing the signal on DirecTV.

Except that The Weather Channel (SD) was carried prior to the addition of 7.2, so was probably a pre-existing agreement. The thing is that I don't believe TWCHD has local content, so TWCHD would be for HD versions of their weather programming such as "Storm Stories". That doesn't compete with 7.2 as WeatherNow doesn't run that sort of programming.

I mean when you go to Cox on Demand and watch shows instantly how much of it is in HD. When I had it a few years ago, nothing was in HD except for PPV.

Example
Is all of Starz on Demand in HD?
Is the National Geo channel on demand in HD, or is it mostly SD.
What about there new Local Network on Demand, any of it in HD?

I ask because
On demand in HD for instant watching is something SAT really cant do as they require you to down load everything from the slow internet.

it's the same networks that we have in hd except for the locals and they have dew hd whatever that is.

UPDATE:

KMTV, which currently transmits DT through a side-mount antenna, apparently wants to keep doing so.

It originally wanted to move the side-mount UHF DT antenna to the top of the tower, where the analog channel 3 antenna currently sits. But an application (http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/prefill_and_display.pl?Application_id=1312094&Service=DT&Form_id=301&Facility_id=35190) just filed with the FCC seeks to modify KMTV's construction permit to "eliminate the need to undertake the costly process of replacing the present top-mounted analog antenna."

"The proposed facilities are predicted to serve 98.6% of the population which is predicted to be served by KMTV-DT's present DTV construction permit facilities," the station wrote in its application.

Not sure how this will affect you, but I just thought you should know.

Considering the financial problems Journal has, I'm not surprised. I don't know how KM-3's signal stretches in other directions, but in Columbus, KMTV is the strongest Omaha signal. So it's not like the current setup isn't working pretty well.

BTW, I recently added an AntennaCraft Y10-7-13 VHF antenna, pointed towards Lincoln, to plug into my ChannelMaster 7777. It bumped my KUON-12 reception up from 25% to near 100%, and KOLN-10 comes in about 90% of the time. I'm located at 150th & Dodge, but with trees and a hill to the west, so I'm pretty happy. Now I just have to wait for KLKN-8 to switch their digital signal to 8 (and for KETV-7 to shut down analog) to fill out my channel lineup.

KM-3 comes in well for me at 43 mi. so I do not see any problem with their signal. My tv signal quality meter shows it at about 80 to 85 day or night. I am using a Winegard 7698 for reception and it has to look through trees to get omaha stations. OTA can be hard to receive depending on your location and the right antenna. I am running no amp so am pleased with what I receive.

My parents live in Falls City, the extreme southern end of the Omaha DMA, and KMTV-3 is the hardest Omaha digital signal to pick up for them (outside NET 26, which is covered by a repeater in Richardson County). They have an aerial antenna and are about 90 mi from the Omaha antenna farm. I suppose the higher position of the stick might have helped them, but now they get Omaha stations in HD thru Dish so they don't really care too much about OTA. (I guess this becomes a bigger issue if Dish balks at the next carriage agreement with KMTV.)

It took a leap of faith on my part to give it a shot. But solidifying channel 12 was the consolation prize for me. What makes it possible is that all of the Omaha stations are on UHF and Lincoln is going VHF, so I can use the pre-amp to join two antennas together. The AntennaCraft Y10 is optimized for channels 7 to 13, and seems to be the best around for that band. From my perspective, 8, 10, and 12 all seem to line up pretty close together, so once I did a Google Maps to orient my house towards the towers, it went well. I put it in my attic, which probably hurts my reception, but it's out of the weather.

The FCC's coverage maps suggest that KOLN-10 should be viewable for you.

KLKN-8 appears to be out of your range, though. But you never know; an outdoor antenna if you've got a clear shot of the horizon to the west-northwest with a pre-amp might work.

From a few Internet searches it appears that regional sports networks are available on the Silver and Gold TurboHD packages, but apparently not Bronze (basic package). Dish Network does have most of the regional sports networks in HD, though I am not sure if the regional sports networks on Dish show SD programming when there is no HD programming being aired, or if they are simply off the air like Cox 745. I see FSN Midwest listed but not FSN Kansas City, so not sure if FSNMW includes FSNKC on Dish Network or if on Dish Network viewers in Nebraska would be getting the Cardinals games rather than the Royals games.

If I had a clear view of the southern sky I'd have a TurboHD package and know from experience, but as I don't... that's the info I could come up with via Google.

NEBRASKA:
KCWL/51 (Lincoln) plans to flip its affiliation from CW to FOX as part of the digital transition. The station, which does not have a digital companion channel, will leave the air June 9 and return June 12 in digital form as FOX affiliate KFXL. The station will apparently act as a satellite of KTVG/17 (Grand Island), which is also seen on KSNB/4 (Superior). The stations are operated by Pappas Telecasting. Pappas also owns Omaha FOX affiliate KPTM/42, which has served as the de facto FOX affiliate for Lincoln for many years, though KTVG has also had a translator in Lincoln for many years and has been available on cable and satellite more recently. KCWL signed on in 2006 with 51.4kW and will operate with 14kW digital. Both power levels are similar to low-power stations, though KCWL is licensed as full-power and could eventually upgrade.

The move should end speculation about the future of the FOX affiliation in the Lincoln/Tri-Cities area. Earlier this year, CBS affiliate KOLN/KGIN reserved the domain name fox1011.com, which redirects to a page on KOLN's website. Before access to the page was restricted, it showed a FOX 10/11 logo, program schedule, cable channel listings, and an explanation that digital TV made it possible for KOLN to carry both CBS and FOX in HD. Station management later said it was an experiment. (6/4/2009)

JoelWNelson
06-04-09, 12:33 PM
Since that leaves the Lincoln-Hastings-Kearney market without a CW affiliate, I wonder what will take the place? I assume the satellite locals packages will drop 51 since programming will be identical to 17; would CW be replaced by a national feed or just not be carried? (What is the precedent in other markets?)

May also free up some cable bandwidth, as Time Warner for example won't need to maintain identical programming on both channels 4 and 18.

Lincoln will continue to have broadcast and cable service from KXVO, though wonder what it means for central and western Nebraska? Cable-only feeds? Digital subchannels? There's also still KUVR-LD in McCook which had been simulcast with KCWL; as McCook already has a Fox LPTV I wonder if KUVR-LD will keep CW or become a second Fox signal.

Finally, I found out that analog 18 and 35 will both remain on the air indefinitely; and may still convert to digital 47 and 49 despite having the same programming and virtually the same coverage area as 51.

Jon Ellis
06-05-09, 12:31 AM
There's a chance they could carry CW on a subchannel and just haven't announced it yet. Or, it could just continue as a cable-only channel. (CW+ is the 24/7 feed of the CW and syndicated programming for markets smaller than 100, and that's what KCWL has carried.) Pappas/KHGI was the marketing partner for the WB 100+, the forerunner to the CW+, before KCWL signed on.

We must remember that Pappas is in Bankruptcy. They cant afford to even pay for the electricity to run the station at full power so they are running it at the low power level (which is why many cant get the station).

The FCC licensed this station for full power over a year ago, Pappas is only doing LP or low power right now before the change and after the change.

Since they are so short on money there is NO WAY they can afford to buy the HD equipment right now let alone pay the electric bill for Full power which costs a lot more.

Really all they are doing is stealing away the Local Fox rights from KOLN who can afford HD and full power so they can someday go to HD and full power once the economy gets better and they get out of bankruptcy.

Good play on there part getting the rights, surprised FOX is letting them get away with it, typically FOX corp requires Full power and HD for prime time for most markets.

I think the viewers would of ALL been better off if KOLN won the Fox rights and put it on as a HD sub channel. Remember the Fox1011.com web site, they almost had it.

Actually, KCWL/KFXL (still KCWL in the FCC database) has never been licensed for full power (5,000kW analog or 1,000kW digital). Their original construction permit was for 5,000kW analog but it was never built. They were always 51.4kW in the analog world and will be 14kW digital.

Consider that the maximum power for a low-power digital station is 15kW, and that shows where channel 51 stands in the world.

They filed it with the FCC last month:

http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101309066&formid=345&fac_num=33144

I'd imagine it'll begin carrying Daystar shortly after the sale closes.

Anyone know what time Lincolns CHannel 8 is making the switch today? If its already done, anyone tried it, does it work now on VHF high digital 8?

KLKN reportedly flipped at noon. I got the new DT 8 here in Bellevue just after 12:30 pm rather easily-less of a challenge than with the old DT 31.

Neither KETV or KMTV's sign off (yes, KETV is nightlighting) were anything special-rather disappointing. I see KXVO and KPTM are still on analog, as is WOI-5 in Ames/Des Moines. Every other full power seems to have gone... IPTV must have gone last night as they weren't on early this morning.

I did the rescan at around 8 PM this evening at the folks place and we're getting KSNB 4 and KLKN 8 very well. Time will tell but 4 was rock solid. I'm unable to get either KXVO or KPTM as our old upright concrete silo stands in the way. :(

Roger Buddenberg said in the Omaha World Herald this morning:

there is only 1 analog channel left in Omaha.

that isnt true, besides the DTV info channel on 7

there is:

24- KKAZ (same as 42.2

48- KOHA (the soon to be Daystar channel)

61- K61Ga (the 3abn channel)

so, Roger didnt have all of his facts or he flat out lied in the paper this morning.

Channel 8 used to come in real good when it was on UHF 31, Now channel 8 VHF comes and goes all the time.

I wish they would of stayed on UHF. My VHF Ant is rated at about the same range as my UHF.
Anyone know is, VHF typically worse or do I need a better antenna or should I give up since I am on the edge of there range.

I still cant get channel 51 the new Fox in Lincoln.

Did they complete the upgrade or is it just too lower power.

Can anyone in Lincoln get it?

I'm getting it off and on, but just a bit ago there was no sound (although there was sound on the identical feed that Dish is broadcasting as KCWL still even though it's wrong). I would suspect they're still messing with the transmitter, as I would guess it's not at the top of their engineers' priority list to get fully up and running.

Also, it appears that it IS SD only. Dammit... :(

For us Directv subscribers, they are now feeding KXVO, Omaha @ ch 15 for our CW affiliation. I had to make some changes in my favs to get it to show up in the lineup.

For those who can see channel 51 -- either on Dish or OTA (I see it's been removed from DirecTV's lineup) -- is it a full rebroadcast of KTVG (including the station ID) or does it have any of its own programming or ads separate from KTVG?

Incidentally, channel 51 still shows up in FCC records as KCWL... not yet KFXL.

now that KMTv is on a digital signal

as their sub-channel on 3.2

I mean many of us in Omaha cant get RTN

on the KLKN of Lincoln sub-channel

I would love retro TV on KMTVs sub channel.

Strange they are one of the few major TV stations in the region with out a sub channel. I wonder if they went cheap when they bought there digital equipment and got the model that does not support a 3.2 sub channel.
