DeDondeEs 10-09-06, 11:15 AM I thought I was the only one having this issue. In a way I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one! I have the same equiptment as you with a signal strength of 88% and 3.1 has either been either fine or totally unwatchable (mostly the latter for the last 3 weeks). I've been driving myself nuts trying to fix it. I went to the kvbc website looking for some contact info for engineering but was unable to find anything. I have noticed that the last 3 days have been much better, at least when I was watcing. Maybe they have fixed whatever problem they had (if there was one)?
Same problem here. It seems to happen in 10 minute blocks. It was frustrating watching the beginning of The Office last week. This has been happening with 13-1 alot too.
GeorgeLV 10-09-06, 01:14 PM I noticed the same issues last Thursday as well. Perhaps a call to KVBC is the next step?
KVBC can do nothing about the transmission characteristics of low-vhf, only God can. They have had several opportunities to file with the FCC for a new frequency, but they continualy chosen not to do so. With cable penetration so high in Las Vegas I guess the cost savings on the power bill from transmitting on channel 2 outweigh the costs of having no OTA audience after 2009.
jedster 10-09-06, 01:19 PM DirecTV HD Tivo with OTA for locals... and NBC 3-1 has been absolutely unreliable for the past 4 weeks - have had to purchase Studio 60 off iTunes because it's been unwatchable...
Using a VHF/UHF directional antenna in attic with signal over 93 (at Buffalo/Sahara) and been using it for over 2 years with no issues... all other locals are fine. Nothing in my configuration has changed.... no new buildings/development or plant life.... and I'm at a loss of what to do.
Any ideas? (Remember, nothing has changed with my environment)....
me too. i have an outdoor antenna with line of sight and still have too many dropouts. it's watchable for the most part, but at times it gets annoying.
trevor_2k 10-09-06, 08:37 PM Mediacom, a small cable co in Iowa is filing a lawsuit against Sinclair (which owns WB/CW whatever it's called this week). They are upset because they can't carry their HD feeds without signing agreements for other markets (exact same thing they are doing to Cox here in LV). Let's cheer for Mediacom in the courtroom!

Sadly, you may be right.
It *could* be worse. It could be WBBM...
GeorgeLV 10-10-06, 11:28 PM Apparantly, the HD policy at KVCW is that a show will be HD if the guy/gal in the room with the switch likes it enough to bother flipping switch.
Last night, Everbody Hates Chris was in HD, but all of the other comedies were left in SD. Tonite, Gilmore Girls in in SD, hopefully someone will like Veronica Mars enough to switch it to HD. It seems like Smallville is the only CW show that we can count on as possibly usually being in HD.

GeorgeLV 10-10-06, 11:46 PM I guess I can't blame KVCW-DT for not being in HD tonite, their sister station KVMY-DT is down and is obviously a higher priority for their engineers.

GeorgeLV 10-11-06, 12:33 AM Wow, at 9:30 somebody at KVCW was kind enough to put Veronica Mars in HD. Now if we can build on this progress and get CW HD on Cox and DirecTV.
(edit-and after the second commercial break afterwards, back to upconverted SD :( )
Good :)

BTW, what's up with the extreme blur filter on the upconversion on KVCW/KVMY?
hdtvxpert 10-11-06, 11:48 AM I contacted the engineers at Sinclair last week about the bad switches. Their engineer told me all switches are done manually, and most snafus are the fault of the master control ops. He seem to show some concern and said they invited viewer feedback in this matter. So I suggest we let them have it. Their number is 382-2121, for both 21 and 33.
hdtvxpert 10-11-06, 01:28 PM Just got off the phone with KVBC's engineer. They were unaware D*s local facility to uplink local HD was online. He told me they want to provide their HD signal, and will aggressively try to contact D* to get their signal carried asap. He also said they may even consider providing a fiber link directly from the studio.

Good work! You know, I contacted the other station's GM -- D* hadn't even told the GM that they were broadcasting HD locals in LV. It makes me angry that D* claims it's the local stations that are the obstacles when evidence mounts that the locals don't even know D* is offering the broadcast. The least that D* could do is activate OTA.
Also, the idea of providing a fiber link is really good. It would suck if D* relied on KVBC's spotty broadcast feed for their sattelite uplink.
hdtvxpert 10-11-06, 04:22 PM Forgot to mention in my previous post. The engineer at KVBC also told me they are considering going HD on their news, and could know as soon as today if it's a go.

It is possible that the GM's boss (i.e. the station owner) is the one negotiating with DirecTV and hadn't bothered to tell anyone. Not highly likely, but possible.

Not likely. Sunbelt is headquarted in Las Vegas and KVBC is their flagship station. Landmark only has two local tv stations (KLAS and WTVF) and WTVF is already carried with the Nashville DirecTV HD Locals.

yeah i was speaking with KLAS. on the one hand i am peeved at D* for having no good reason for not having HD locals here in LV. on the other hand, i find it interesting that the two stations they don't have online are the 1080i stations, especially given all the reports of the 8mm effect with their 1080i broadcasts.
on the other hand, i almost don't care anymore. the D* stuff they are broadcasting here has some serious audio issues. there is a sort of warbling/stutter on 5 for the last 24 hours at least and there was the same on 13 last i checked. so i am just using OTA on my media center box, which gets better PQ anyway (noticable, but not that huge a deal).
i am actually considering switching back from my HR20 to the HR10 now that 6.3 has finally downloaded. anyone want to buy my HR20s? (sic, though i do own them)

Any word as to when they'll pass on the Jeopardy HD? I assume the fact that local KVBC news going HD is good news in this respect.
Whats happened to Vegggas....seems like forever since he has posted
hdtvxpert 10-12-06, 11:32 AM Jedster,
I got the 6.3 download on one of my two HD 10-250s. I don't know why only one of them got it. But since it did, my favorite channel list was wiped out, and I had to reload it. And also, the entire unit keeps freezing up, and I have to reboot it to make it work. Have you had any of these issues since the upgrade?

FYI, it doesn't look like there's anyone to answer to phones at night.
It looks like they cut away from the CW HD feed on tonites Smallville because of reception problems, but it won't hurt to call them in the morning and let them know that people are watching the HD feed.

Don't know about the freezes, but the reset of the favorites was noted in the read me and had to do with the database changes between 3.x and 6.x.
BTW, if you didn't know about it, the TiVo Community Forum (http://www.tivocommunity.com) has a section just for the HD-TiVo (which is where I found out about the readme file for the 6.3 upgrade).

I agree! The last debate they had between Titus/Gibson wasnt, but I dont believe it was hosted in studio.
George, what brand of USB ATSC tuner do you use? Do you just use an OFF AIR tuner or hook it up to cable/sat? I assume you're satisfied with its performance.

I'm using a KWorld ATSC 310U that I picked up at Fry's for something like $99. It's only for OTA.
ravedog 10-16-06, 08:08 PM To the few here also experiencing problems with KVBC and artifacting and breakup:
(I cross-posted this on the Tivo forums as well.)
Since i was experiencing problems receiving KVBC 3-1 thru my OTA tuner in my HD DirecTV Tivo, I tried to isolate the problem: I hooked up a spare 24" Samsung HDTV to an external Samsung HDTV Tuner box to the same antenna that was feeding the HD DirecTV Tivo, using a basic splitter and some RG-6. Set both the DirecTV Tivo on OTA Channel 3-1 and the Samsung HDTV Tuner box to the same channel, watching both TV's at the same time. Result: Both exhibited the same artifacting at the same times on channel 3. When conducting the same experiment on other channels: no problems. So this seemed to be beyond being a problem with the DirecTV receiving too hot a signal (as some mentioned over on the Tivo forums, unless the Samsung external tuner was just as bad a receiver... what are the odds).
A user over on Tivo forums mentioned I should try a Radio Shack attenuator, but no stores in my area nor the online site still carried it (or maybe it was out of stock). So I tried another route:
After pouring over this massive thread, I discovered that there were a few others having problems with KVBC as well. So I took this info and got in contact with KVBC chief engineer who actually asked me to call him within 3 hours of sending him an email. (When in doubt, goto the source).
I relayed my problems and he was curious if I had any motors nearby or if i were in the airports flightpath. Yes to an A/C motor (turned out not to be an issue) and no to the airport. By the time I got to this conversation with him, I hadn't had any problems with channel 3-1 for over a week, so he asked me to do an experiment: watch channel 3 live one night, digital on one monitor and analog on the other (fun with the delays). We wanted to see if when there was artifacting on digital, to see if i got ANY noise on the analog TV (ruling out interference?) Over 2 nights I tried the experiment and it failed as there was no breakup on either night. Seemed like the problem had gone. (It always works for the repairman).
Since I had his ear, I asked him why we only had issues with their channel and none of the other locals, he told me that it was the part of the spectrum (the fact that they were on VHF low). I then asked why FOX who was on channel 5 didn't suffer the same issues, to which he responded that FOX was actually a lot higher up when it came to digital.
The next day we spoke again and he had told me that they were experiencing problems with the Digital transmission pipe for a few weeks (that makes sense) and about 12 days ago, they rebooted the whole digital feed system (in a manner of speaking). This happened on a Wednesday. Coincidentally, from that Wednesday night onward, we haven't experienced any problems (or maybe 1 glitch per night, compared to 100's). So far we have gone about 12 days since a problem. Here's hoping that it was in fact, on their end.
If anyone here is still experiencing problems with KVBC digital 3-1 using an OTA tuner here in the valley area as of this writing, would you send me a private message so i can relay the info the the engineer.
Thanx for the input.
VegasFlyby 10-16-06, 08:42 PM To ravedog,
Thanks for putting in the extra effort. I put in so much time trying to fix the problem on my end that I thought I was going to lose it! I'm glad we have some confirmation that it was definately a station issue. I just hope the issue doesn't arise again.

Its not that great, its full of cRAP artists you see on MTV.
Demodave 10-17-06, 05:17 PM MHD:
The picture quality sems pretty good. They are also showing many live concerts from classic rock to hip-hop to country. The other thing I noticed is that if the original video is DD5.1, then MHD (and Cox) relays the audio. Watching last night, the HK receiver was in Dolby PL-II, then switched to Dolby Digital 5.1 when a Cream video came on, then it switched back to Dolby PL-II afterwards.

Yes, if you live in the valley, a Dish 622 and an OTA antenna is the best way to get the most HD for your buck, even if some of it is HD-lite. If you live in Pahrump or outlying Clark County, DirecTV may be the most attractive option now that they sort of have HD locals.
As an aside, DirecTV and Cox may or may not have NFL Network HD on a special events channels for the 8 NFL Network football games. However, only Dish gets the checkmark for carrying the HD channel 24/7.

...uhh, this channel was just added to the vegas HD lineup on Cox.

On another subject. Did anyone else watch Fox's HD coverage of baseball this week? I was just wondering if it was me or were their slo-mo replays very grainy? Also, I dearly wish there was a second broadcast team audio as an option...lol.

The super slo-mo replays are grainy because the CCDs can only capture so much information when they're run at something like 1000 fps for the super slo-mo. You'll also notice that the colors are very washed up while in the super slo-mo. Slow motion replays from the regular cameras should fine, but it will have the flip book effect as there are only 60 fps.

Thanks, George. I could have sworn I've seen cleaner slo-mos before. But perhaps that was a different framerate? Your explanation makes sense, though.

I don't have a DTV Tivo but my guide data is always wrong for 33-1. My receiver always displays guide data for KBLR channel 39-1. It's not that big of a deal, it's just freakin annoying. What gives? Is anyone getting the correct guide data for 33-1?

KVCW is sending out the same TSID (transport stream id) as KBLR for some reason. There are supposed to have it set to 0x082B, but instead it is set to 0x082D. My receivers don't particulary care about that error, but I guess some other receivers must be using the TSID to determine what guide data to get.
That must be why my H-10 wont receive 33-1 even with a +80% antenna signal
foghorn2 10-22-06, 12:29 PM Yeah, I thought the problem was with Dish, my 33.1 listings shows the same thing as 39 which are spanish programs. When I try to record Star Trek, I have to do a manual timer because "futbol" is shown on the guide with overlapping times.

speco2003 10-22-06, 06:01 PM To the few here also experiencing problems with KVBC and artifacting and breakup:
I have the directv HD tivo and I as of about 2 weeks ago lost my 3-1 HD feed. No amount of ant tweaking makes it come in all the way, just still pics. All my other HDs work fine day or night.
ravedog 10-22-06, 10:15 PM any signal strength? have u tried rebooting the tivo? possibly rescanning for the OTA channels again?
VegasFlyby 10-23-06, 12:52 PM Those with the DTV Tivos: do you get an accurate guide for 33.1 since the conversion from gold 33?
My D* Tivo is getting accurate channel guide info for 33.1.

In general, KVBC has been pretty bad reception, particularly with the HR10. I also get HD via my SXRD's tuner and two VBOX 150 tuners inside an HTPC. The HR10 is by far the worst. I suspect your samsung and the HR10 have the same or similar ATSC tuner. As it turns out, the quality of your tuner does matter, though not as much as it does in the analog world. I'm hoping that the HR20's ATSC tuner will be better than the HR10s. Of course, we won't know that for quite some time apparently.
One other thing I've noticed with KVBC is that the quality of their HD sometimes appears a little off; what I mean is that there is a little more motion blur than I'm used to with HD. It could just be NBC's fault, but if they are modifying the signal in anyway, they should consider reoptimizing it. Note: i haven't watched much NBC for the last 2 weeks, so it may be better now that they "rebooted" their system, though this is entirely different than their signal transmission issue.
Thanks for being proactive, and please pass aloing my thanks to KVBC for listening.

Here's the mpeg2repair output of a recording of Heroes I made from KVBC on a good reception night. Usually there's a lot more than 53 bad frames in an hour.
File Size Processed: 6.18 GB, Play Time: 01h:01m:58s
1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps (25.85 fps Telecine), 19.39 Mbps (13.44 Mbps Average).
Average Video Quality: 63.44 KB/Frame, 0.25 Bits/Pixel.
AC3 Audio: 3/2 Channels (L, C, R, SL, SR) + LFE, 48.0 kHz, 448 kbps.
Dialog Normalization: -27.0 dB, Center Mix Level: -3.0 dB, Surround Mix Level: -3.0 dB
53 of 96147 video frames found with errors.
9 of 116211 audio frames found with errors.
435964 corrupted video bytes in file.
0.166833 seconds of video timestamp gaps.
0.736000 seconds of audio timestamp gaps.
The "off" HD PQ is probably related to an early generation mpeg2 encoder combined with their adequate (except for sports, SNF looks pretty bad at times), but less than optimal 13.5Mb/s HD bitrate.

Thanks. Hopefully they will invest in some good equipment to take full advantage of everything that HD offers.
One other thing that I've noticed is that I've had major deinterlacing issues with the KVBC local and national news broadcasts. These are issues that I did not have in Seattle from their NBC affiliate. I have them here with both a VBOX 150 ATSC tuner on my HTPC and with my HR10-250.

I see on the direct tv site that theyre supposed to have the rest of the local channels in HD "this fall". Does anyone have any info on when that might take place exactly? I was thinking about canceling my cox cable service and going with directtv because i can't stand the quality of service im getting from cox, and the guide is terrible compared to what i used to have with comcast before i moved to vegas.

If you're leaving Cox, I'd recommend switching to Dish rather than DirecTV for the time being. Use OTA for HD locals.

Same recommendation here, also the new D* HD DVR box does not pick up HD OTA  Get the Vip622 ffrom Dish unless you must have NFL Sunday ticket.
If you don't want to commit, buy the box at Costco, or lease the box and give up the $50 activation fee directly from Dish.

Although the D* HR20-700 does not currently have the OTA reception activated, it is scheduled to be done shortly--probably by the end of the month. There will be two tuners and it will be possible to record two programs at once: 2 OTA, 1 OTA +1 Sat, or 2 Sat. While recording up to 2 programs, previously recorded programming will be available for viewing at the same time. It will be done by a s/w download and will require no new physical hardware.
By the way, does anyone have any idea when channels 3 and 8 will send their HD signal to D*?

I suspect what's up may have to do with DirecTV having to find space for not only 3 and 8, but also 21 and 33. DirecTV is one of a few providers that that has a deal for HD locals with Sinclair, and there is some suggestion that it is a national deal that covers all of their markets.

Are the RSN's in HD currently available via either mpeg2 or mpeg4 in LV? If so, could someone please let me know which channel they are being broadcast on.
I've been driving myself crazy with this since there is rarely anything actually being broadcast on channels 95-97 and I could swear that I watched the USC-UW football game in high-def about a month ago. If anyone could help me with this it would be much appreciated since I am having my Crestron programmed this week and I'd like to have FSN HD programmed as a preset favorite. Thanks in advance for any help!!

it was on 95. that's a national channel so it gets different feeds from time to time. for the life of me i can't figbure out what FSN HD stuff is available here. D* makes it as confusing as possible. they hate customers (sic).

i doubt d* is thinking that hard about it. they gave us the 2 channels and i bet that's all we get for a long long time. seattle launched HD in may; to my knowledge they still only have 2 stations up. seattle is a much much bigger DMA and OTA reception there is worse. D* only cares about saying they have HD local service (which of course is a misrepresenation). now that they have year long contracts, they figure as long as they can sign someone up, they don't care if they don't give them a full compliment of HD channels.
i'll bet that not a single person at D* has thought about the fact that we get only 2 locals (other than CSRs) in at least 10 days.
HiHoStevo 10-30-06, 12:02 AM Hi guys.....
I recently sold a house that had a great OTA antenna in the attic..., but as I am obviously starting to lose it, I forgot what brand of antenna it was.
I purchased another home up in the Anthem area and want to put an antenna in the attic for OTA. My previous one looked like a "Wing" and was powered (amplified)..., it always provided me a 90% signal even from inside the attic..., but like a dunce I have forgotten the brand and model.
If any of you folks have one that is similar and know the make and model, please POST... or if you have another suggestion for an attic antenna I will take that also... :-)

Thanks for the help guys. My original post was pretty ambiguous. For purposes of clarification, I have both D* and Cox. I knew that the game I was watching was on D* somewhere in the 90's and I even thought that it was on 95, but everywhere I am reading that FSN RSN's are MPEG4 on channels 96 or 97. That's where all of the confusion is coming from. I'm assuming that 95 is an MPEG2 station since I'm still getting it even after I "moved" to LA this past weekend. Now at least I'm getting LA (D*) and LV (Cox) feeds of my high-def locals.
It sounds like many of you are as frustrated as I am with the service D* is providing. When I originally spoke with the CSR they told me all about the RSN's and how they will be available in our area on channels 96/97 as soon as our HD locals went live. All I would need is to have the KA/KU dish and an MPEG4 capable receiver - so I renewed my contract and went through all of the trouble of obtaining the proper hardware.
As soon as we got our "HD locals", none of the CSRs claim to know anything at all about the HD RSN's. This kind of pisses me off since the only reason I renewed my contract was to get the HD locals and RSN's - neither of which I'm getting.
hdtvxpert 10-30-06, 01:56 AM Steve,
I wish you you the best of luck picking up anything OTA in Anthem. Most of the area has the Black Mt. signal blocked, and 8 & 13 are too close to you to get a stable signal.

I'm starting to think that all you people that are "shadowed" by Black Mountain ought to try again with the latest generation of tuners. They're much better at multipath rejection and you should be able to get a stable signal from an indirect reflection off a mountain. For my own experience, I've even gotten digital tv working in the middle of a concrete warehouse with no analog reception whatsoever of a $2 rat shack bowtie for every station except, obviously the low-vhf nightmare KVBC.
BTW, if you're using an indoor or attic antenna antenna, be aware that a stucco house is basically a huge Faraday cage, so if you live in one, you must point the antenna through a window to get any sort of usable signal at all.
HiHoStevo 10-30-06, 02:38 AM Well if any of you folks have had success up in the Sun City part of Anthem drop me a note or post what type of antenna you are using and which direction you have it pointed.
and we thank you for your support.........
GeorgeLV 10-30-06, 02:39 AM rharouni, FYI, the local FSNs don't really broadcast HD games all that frequently, you'll be lucky to get one or two in a week. The schedule of what's even theoretically available is here: http://msn.foxsports.com/name/HD
Monday's LA King's game is showing up in my H10's guide on channel 95 and should available to all FSN West territory subscribers (and Center Ice) in mpeg2. AFAIK, DirecTV has not implemented the channel 96/97 mpeg4 HD RSNs in Las Vegas, but it's moot since you've "moved" to LA.
I know this is off topic, but I don't know of another local las vegas forum that many Cox Cable/ Internet users are available. Does anyone with Cox Internet service been experiencing sporadic outages recently? I'll be going along just fine on the internet and then , out of nowhere, no connection..., but all lights on my modem and router are green and apparently functioning properly. Even rebooting everything doesn't work. But then a little later, everything is magically fine.
Cox is blaming my router ( I think its their standard answer for connection problems ). Before I go out and spend the bucks for a new router (current one ..netgear.. only about a year old ) I thought I'd ask in here just in case ... sorry for the off topic... Is there a locally based cable modem forum out there where users can discuss their Cox problems or gripes or get help since the cox customer service people are usually pretty rude and just want to get rid of you as fast as they can.

I'm in the Silverado Ranch area and Cox Internet has been really really slow as of late. Can't say that I've experienced any outages though.

Although I moved to Pahrump about four months ago, I did have Cox ISP while living in Henderson. I had the same problems you had on a sporadic basis.
The first few times, I would call Cox and the only solution (unless they had a cable out) was to unplug the modem and cable power, wait a short time and then plug in the modem power and then the router power.
After the first few times of them telling me this, I just did it on my own.
The Tech Serv. people were always polite and never suggested that my equipment was at fault.
I just learned to live with the (relatively) frequent unplug-replug routine.
Even though Cox wasn't the greatest on reliability, at least it was fast when it worked. Where I live now, we don't have cable so I am stuck (literally) with a sat based ISP.
I was surprised to learn that the new development we built in doesn't have any cable service.
tinpaul 10-31-06, 12:56 PM Although I moved to Pahrump about four months ago, I did have Cox ISP while living in Henderson.
I just learned to live with the (relatively) frequent unplug-replug routine.

naninlv 10-31-06, 04:00 PM Hi all-
I'm new to HD. After reviewing my options I decided to go with Dish and the vip622. They are installing later this week. My question is can anyone suggest a good OTA to get for this unit? My location is near Summerlin Pkwy and Buffalo. Thanks.

Mt Falls is the only development that has cable Internet, however, you can (most likely) get the new WiMax service from SBC. rather than Sat.
I have a home in Artesia, and my next door neighbor has it, and loves it...

Hi neighbor,
I'm in Artesia as well. Unfortunately, when we were building, the only real option we had was WildBlue. (Airnetwork wouldn't even come out even though our next door neighbor has it and we have a better line of sight. They said there were too many problems with reception in the area. They wouldn't even accept a waiver.)
When we signed up with WildBlue, we also signed a two year commitment. Hopefully when that expires, we will have a few more choices.

NBC HD Is up BABY! :D
I hope CBS is next ;)
I really don't care much about the rest.
speco2003 11-02-06, 12:05 PM Is the today show suppose to be HD? Because it isnt right now, I am on 3 using my directv tivo.
lvthunder 11-02-06, 12:09 PM The Directv tivo won't get the local HD channels from the satellite. You need the new Directv DVR to get those. You should be able to get in OTA with the 10-250 though. As for the Today Show I have no idea if it's in HD or not.
speco2003 11-02-06, 12:16 PM Ok I see. Yes I do get OTA. I just got on the wait list at directv for the newer hddvr.

I think they're sold out everywhere. You also need to be upgraded to a 5LNB satellite dish if you don't have one already.

No, I have no current plans to upgrade to the mpeg4 equipment. Once DirecTV actually has something up there worth going through the hassle and re-upping my programming commitment, I might take a look at it. But, for now, I'll keep my options open.

Cox changed all the digital channels around yesterday. The only HD channel I can get now is Fox which is on 112-2. Fox weather comes in on 112-3, KLAS digital (not HD) comes in on 101-7. Some Fox Sports network channel comes in on 86-3. Test channels come in on 884,885 and 888. The test channel on 884 shows that they are having issues with many of the digital channels. I know last night TNT HD was freezing and ESPN-HD was tiling badly. I checked my levels and they were all OK.
FYI, I have a panny plasma with a QAM tuner (no cable card). I got the set in July and have noticed that Cox has changed all of the digital channel mappings several times since then.

I switched over to a new screen name, my old email wasn't working too well. I called Cox, and they said they're having some isolated issues in certain areas with service. They do not have an estimate on when they expect these to be resolved. I'm guessing my HD outages are probably associated with this.

How do you have it hooked to your TV, VGA? I'm thinking about getting it (I want to see Serenity in HD) but I looked at how poorly the 360 upscales DVD to 1080p vs. an $80 upconverting player and was skeptical of the VGA cable being able to transmit the HD movie clearly.

VGA @ 1360x768p. The VGA cable doesn't seem to limit the picture versus HDMI, but perhaps at 1080p the difference would be notable.
I too have lost my Cox Basic Cable Local HD Channels. Thursday we lost 3-1, 5-1, and 13-1. Friday we lost the last of them 8-1 and 11-1.
So I called Cox, and the Customer Service person and again the supervisor told me that I did not subscribe to the HDTV service and therefore never had those HDTV channels. And I would need to rent a receiver. I guess I imagined the past year of HDTV channels provided I could find them as Cox moved them around. I called again the next day and spoke to another supervisor, with the same results, except he hung up on me after I started swearing at him.
So then I called all the TV stations. As it was a Holiday Friday some of them were out. But here's what Fox 5 and NBC 3 had to say:
Cox installed a new head end Wed/Thurs and they are now converting the analog signal to digital and back again, and this is causing a 5 second delay in the signal provided by these stations. They use Cox in their newsroom and it was causing them problems as everything they did there was 5 seconds behind.
One of their engineers used a stream analyzer and found that Cox had in fact enabled a bit in the stream that would stop QAM tuners from receiving it. So effectively Cox has disabled the HDTV versions of all Las Vegas local channels for the entire valley, unless you subscribe to digital cable. Yet if you look at their website:
I was unable to post the URLs as a new poster...sorry
It says both on their general site and the Las Vegas site that all that is needed is “Basic Cable” to get local HDTV stations. But if you call them they will insist that you never had them and you won’t unless you get Digital Cable.
So then apparently one of the stations complained on my behalf and then I got a call that a tech was going to come to my house, and he actually had the balls to tell me that he’s seen these TV’s magically pull in the HDTV stations over the air without the Cox cable even plugged in, and I must have been receiving them via the airwaves until now. I guess there is just a black cloud over the valley that is now blocking that overpowering signal that will find your TV even without an antenna.
I also called the corporate headquarters (404) 843-5000 and complained and am awaiting a call from the General Managers Office, as it is impossible to reach anyone in LV higher than the brick wall of customer support and I think the whole company is clueless. I encourage everyone in the Las Vegas valley to call this number and complain that we are being lied to and our Basic Cable HDTV has been taken away even though their website says it comes with Basic Cable. Because if they are not lying to us to get us to purchase Digital Cable then they really don’t know that it’s broke and they are so arrogant that they won’t listen to the fact that it’s broken.
I was 2 days away from upgrading to an HDDVR/Internet/Phone package, but now I’m inclined to switch to SAT/DSL. Talk about MONOPOLY.

You might also consider calling the local franchise authority and the FCC. I believe the cable monopolies are required to provide any broadcast available OTA as unencrypted streams that do not require a box or a specific level of service (beyond the life line cable service) to receive. It appears Cox Las Vegas may be violating that regulation and can be fined for it if they continue.

I've heard this before but the TV stations seemed to act as if their hands were tied. Does anyone have any links to the FCC website or even case law that states this? I've seen something on the FCC site but it seemed to only apply to the standard local stations.

OK, I'm not finding great stuff, but here's what I have so far:
Must Carry of Digital Only Stations (http://www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/digital.html) (2001)
"The FCC also said that a TV station that returns its analog spectrum and converts to digital operations must be carried by cable systems. This action is one of a series of steps to facilitate the transition from analog to digital television broadcasting. This transition will ultimately expand consumer choice of video programming and other services. The transition from analog to digital will allow for more efficient use of the spectrum that will permit new communications and video services in parts of the spectrum returned to the FCC for auction to new competitive providers."
Analog and Digital Must-Carry Obligations of Cable and Satellite Television Operators (http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:5h8rBZ8xwgQJ:www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/r/m/rmf5/MustCarrySummary.doc+fcc+digital+must+carry&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=12&client=firefox-a)
"The FCC affirmed its tentative conclusion not to require cable operators simultaneously to carry broadcasters’ analog and digital signals. The Commission also reaffirmed its prior determination that cable operators should not have to carry more than the single, primary digital programming stream from any particular broadcaster. The Order states that mandatory dual carriage was not necessary either to advance the governmental interests as identified by Congress and the Supreme Court, or to facilitate the transition from analog to digital television"
And an interesting Ars.Technica article on digital multicast must carry debates (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060614-7055.html).
Everything I've found indicates that the cable company is not required to carry both the analog and digital signal for a given station, but that if they do, both the analog and digital rebroadcast are subject to the same rules, meaning that the stations have to be available on the most basic cable plan and not require a box to decode the signal.
The TV stations may be saying their hands are tied regarding whether or not their digital channel is carried at all and whether or not their sub channels are carried. In that they are true. However, if Cox is carrying the digital channels of broadcast stations AT ALL they must be unencrypted (i.e. clear QAM or ATSC). If Cox has changed that, they are in violation and you can complain to the local franchise authority and the FCC as an individual. Cox has only two choices. Cease carrying the digital channels all together or provide them in the clear as part of the most basic cable plan.
Note that once the digital OTA transition is complete, Cox will have to carry the digital channel in the clear, as all broadcast stations will be, by definition and fact, digital only. So even if there is a grey area here, Cox will only be able to pull this crap for another year or two. Then they'll have to provide the digital broadcast channels on the most basic plan. So making customers pay to get access to something that will be free in two years is bound to cause them no end of problems.
doormat 11-12-06, 04:05 PM The channels are stlll out there. I know Fox HD is at 112-2 or something, as I turned the pregame on this morning.
I was able to receive in on my QAM tuner. What they seemed to have stopped transmitting is the PSIP data that would make the channels show up in the correct order in the lineup. So instead of going 2,3,3-1,3-2,4,5,5-1.... it goes 2,3,4,5... analog channels and you have to surf up in the 110s to find the HD channels. I'll update this post when I've figured out where all the channels are.
Fox HD: 112-2, Fox weather 112-3
CBS HD: 103-1, SD at 101-7
PBS HD: 103-3
I couldnt find NBC or ABC.
Next time you call cox, just ask them to start retransitting the PSIP data.
Edit (again): weird, now I'm getting intermittent sound and no picture on those QAM channels. Is this a signal strength issue or that flag (I didnt know that flag existed, I just thought once they encrypted the stream that would be plenty).
Edit 3: Now I can view the HD channels again. Go fig.
[QUOTE=HiHoStevo]Well if any of you folks have had success up in the Sun City part of Anthem drop me a note or post what type of antenna you are using and which direction you have it pointed.

tinpaul 11-13-06, 05:59 PM Just wondering if anyone had heard anything CBSHD on DirecTV via sat.

I do not get these yet either. HDTVxpert, you wouldn't happen to be on the east side/Henderson with me would you?
I wonder if LiftedTacoma is near Summerlin with doormat?
My experience was exactly the same when calling Cox as HDTVxpert's. I think Cox has trained all of their people to believe the lie that the HDTV package and a receiver is required to receive local HDTV and they constantly renumber the HDTV channels to throw everyone off and make it so difficult to follow that everyone will just sign up for it.
I got another call from CH 3 today and they said they now seem to be on 102-4. I asked if they could force their hand and make COX move it back to 3-1, and told them my theory above. They said they’d look into it. They also said it was the "privacy bit" that was turned on that was preventing us from receiving them over the weekend.
I’m going to call the local franchise tomorrow and complain my very theory above. The whole thing is contrary to the FCC’s mission for HDTV. It’s supposed to be free or at least on basic cable.
Anyone with me? The number is 455-TVTV.
doormat 11-14-06, 12:51 AM Likewise I get zilch on channel 102. Nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada. Sadly I dont know anyone around me with the "proper" HD package to see what frequencies they're using to pick up 3-1 and 13-1.
I'm not so sure Cox is being malicious here. I think they're just really really ignorant CSRs who wouldnt know what PSIP data is if you hit them over the head with it.
In the absense of Vegggas, I'll be the tech expert here and point to PSIP data. Its all about Cox retransmitting the PSIP data they're getting from the local feeds (over fiber IIRC). It took a while the last time they switched the channels around - and for a while I only got the PSIP data for 5,8,10 and nothing for 3 and 13 (go figure).
hdtvxpert 11-14-06, 11:15 AM I live near 95 and Decatur area. Anyway, wallah, yes psip is the key to Cox's problems. I finally got through to a CSR that would get to the bottom of my (our) problem and helped. He confirmed as (previous posts have said) that they moved into a new head end. The equipment that inserts the psip into the data streams is not in place. Hence no remapping of the local HD channels. He did not know about the total absence of channels 3 and 13. However he said all should be fixed by week's end.
Sorry to butt in to this thread, Just wondering if any one knows who in the city sells the Panasonic TH42PH9UK or TH50PH9UK displays. I have checked Fry's and a few other places but no one seems to carry the commercial line. I would really like to see them in person before purchasing online.
Thanks!

I don't know about local outlets but, in general, the only difference between the commercial lines and the consumer lines are the number/kinds of inputs and whether or not it has any ATSC/NTSC tuners. So if you look at the 42" or 50" Panasonic consumer models, you're looking at the same display and scaler as the commercial models.
Reading in another forum that some Cox systems are adding ESPN2HD to their lineups.........could this mean that LV will get ESPN2HD when INHD2 is dropped on 1/1/07?
New Lineup?:
ESPNHD 705
ESPN2HD 706
INHD(MOJO) 707

Anyone running a similar setup and getting HD channels?
I have the same panel (50PX60U) and up until last Wednesday I was getting all of the HD locals through the QAM tuner. Cox installed a new headend last week and now I only get Fox-HD (on 112-2). I get a few other digital channels (Fox weather, etc.) but no HD. Others in this group have reported getting the other HD channels but the QAM frequencies they list don't even show up on a scan for me at this point.
If Cox puts things back the way they were last week, you will be able to get all of the local HD channels with no problem. Before they switched out to the new headend all of the channels were mapped to their OTA frequencies (3-1, 5-1, 8-1 etc). Until they do that, it seems to be hit or miss now, depending on your location.

jedster 11-16-06, 04:15 AM Just wondering if anyone had heard anything CBSHD on DirecTV via sat.
no, but channel 3 has pretty bad stutter. i'm suprrised they launched here with the 1080i stutter problem.
in a separate issue, i just watched an episode of Las Vegas from last Friday recorded from OTA. The PQ is really subpar; CBS is so much better. I'm wondering: is this an NBC problem, a KVBC problem, or a probvlem with my equipment? (I'm not talking about poor reception; my reception is actually very strong.)
jedster 11-16-06, 04:27 AM I'm starting to think that all you people that are "shadowed" by Black Mountain ought to try again with the latest generation of tuners.
BTW, if you're using an indoor or attic antenna antenna, be aware that a stucco house is basically a huge Faraday cage, so if you live in one, you must point the antenna through a window to get any sort of usable signal at all.
which tuners do you recommend for a PC? i use the vbox151 right now and it works pretty well though i do get the occasional kvbc droppage.
Demodave 11-16-06, 11:11 AM With the latest changes that Cox has begun implementing, many of the analog basic cable channels are now officially being digitally simulcasted if you have digital cable. Vegggas said it was coming before the end of the year. That will be good for DVR users as recording digital is more efficient than recording analog.
LVKeith 11-16-06, 03:22 PM I'm still not getting 102. Weird...
I am not getting 102 either and I am in the summerlin area also, so it seems like HD through QAM tuner is dependent on the area you live in at this time....

hdtvxpert 11-17-06, 11:37 PM Cox has the local HDs back on line. They are remapped to the "700" series they use on the digital convertors. 730-KLAS-DT, 731-KLVX-DT, 733-KVBC-DT, 735-KVUU-DT, and 732-KTNV-DT
trevor_2k 11-18-06, 12:34 AM Just wondering if we can get a poll of signal levels on Cox 8300HD DVR boxes around town.
Most of my HD channels are in the -8db to -12db range. My box is behind a 4-way splitter (-7.5db) and then a 2-way splitter (-3.5db). Typically 10 to -10 is the safe range. I'm kinda borderline. My worst channels are TNT (709), CBS (730), and NBC (733).
The way to check signal level is by holding down the "Select" Button on the front right of the box for a few seconds until the mail icon is flashing on the front panel. Then press the "Info" button. This will bring up an on-screen diagnostic guide. You can flip through the channels and look at the signal strength.
Tomorrow I am going to be swapping my 4-way to a 3-way that has one -3.5db outlet and two -7.5db outlets, and will be putting the 8300HD on the -3.5 run. That will make up for the second splitter before the tv, and boost my signal levels to (hopefully) -5db to -9db.
How's everyone elses levels?

730 (CBS) -4db
731 (PBS) -4db
735 (FOX) -3db

JoustGod 11-19-06, 02:51 AM Just curious about the process you have to go through to preserve an HD recording from the Cox-provided DVR. I have the 8400. I'm guessing this is an impossibility. However, I'm listening to anyone with options to give me. I already am aware of the output to VCR option. I'm not interested in that one. Help please!
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Is the 8400 new? whats it got that the 8300 doesn't?
The 8300 doesn't output 16:9 through its analog outputs. The only way to preserve a 16:9 aspect ratio HD recording to a DVD recorder is to use the SVideo output of the DVR after you reset its format to SD only and then use the zoom/stretch function upon playback to stretch the screen.

That's what I get for making a late night post! I've invented a new DVR! I stand corrected.
So, from what I gather about your reply is that I could input via S-Video a non-HD recording correct? I just want to preserve the quality of the picture as much as possible. I have a Turtle Beach capture card in my computer that has S-Video capability. Can I assume that this would be suitable? I have never tried transferring any video from the DVR, so I know I'm asking potentially obvious questions to those who have done so. Thanks again for any additional info regarding this.

Unfortunately, preserving the PQ is just not possible. I've "dumped" some HD recordings onto my DVD recorder and they don't even look close to the original quality. The downrezzing from the DVR to the DVD recorder introduces lots of compression artifacts and blocking, as well as bad interlacing. The PQ is also a little on the soft side. It looks so bad, I've stopped doing it. SD recordings copied to the DVD recorder look almost identical to the copy on the DVR, though. I've seen no difference between using S-Video and composite connections. About the only way to do it would be through firewire to a D-VHS recorder. I'm not even sure the 8300 has a firewire connection or is even active. Probably not.

Thanks for the input, bruin. Greatly appreciated. I'm sure all the obstacles possible are set in place in order to prevent the consumer from making high quality copies of HD programming. Hmmm. It's been over 10 years already (Digital cable security), and they have been saying that since day 1. There are still yearly invitations to hack the protocol, but it's still secure. Approved firewire is the only way to transfer content, but current devices have issues.

Not back yet...
INHD1 and INHD2 and MOJO will merge as of Jan 1.
ESPN2 seems to have an agreement with Cox for national distribution.
One can only guess...
Cox has stated that their HD lineup should include most, if not all HD channels available, once the digital conversion is done and the higher frequency buildout upgrade is finished.
Digital conversion is supposed to be completed by year end or very near that time, and the buildout upgrade is an ongoing process to all the nodes and amplifiers on the entire plant with no published ETA of completion yet.
I'll know more in a few weeks.

Dish Network will not have Las Vegas HD locals for a long time. The earliest they'll have the satellite capacity to offer them is sometime in 2009 when the Ciel 2 spotbeam satellite is launched for the 129 orbital position. If you can't get Las Vegas HD locals OTA where you move, DirecTV and Cox are the only ways to get them.

If you are unable to get OTA reception, but still want the extra channels Dish offers you might want to consider getting Dish HD and Cox basic cable (about $10) which should get you the HD locals if you have a QAM tuner in your HDTV.
winman42 11-22-06, 03:37 AM Ok, thats good to know, althought i DONT think my current tv has a QAM tuner. I have an old RCA 26inch tube, which has the DTC-100 tuner built in. I'm gonna buy another HD set soon, before the move in December, but it was gonna be a 30inch model for the bedroom,
so not sure if the smaller/cheaper sets will have a QAM tuner. As far as DirecTV goes,
do i need a newer HD tuner to get the HD locals?
Again, thanks for all the help.

lvthunder 11-22-06, 10:50 AM Yes you will need a new Directv receiver to get the HD local channels. I think there are only two that can. You also need the newest dish. The one that points at 5 SATS at the same time. If your TV has the DTC-100 built in I highly doubt it has a QAM tuner, but I'd check the manual if I was you.
winman42 11-22-06, 10:58 AM OK, thanks for the tips. My current DTV dish is the 3 sat model. All the cheaper 32 inch tv's
i'm looking at seem to have the NTSC/ATSC tuners, so i guess i might be out of luck with HD locals, unless i can get them OTA. ;-(

rsblaski 11-22-06, 02:14 PM You can get OTA HD locals through the H10 off air antenna. it is active. I can get all HD locals except 3-1
You can also get OTA HD with the H20 (and an antenna). And if you want an HD DVR, the HR20 will supposedly have OTA activated around Dec. 1, according to D* CSRs.
D* is currently carrying all the local nets in HD except for CBS and PBS.
People have written that CBS has stated they are negotiating for D* carriage.
winman42 11-22-06, 02:19 PM Whats the H10? IS that a particular model of antenna? I'm currently in Henderson at Horizon Ridge Parkway, about a half mile from Horizon Drive, and only get 1 HD local OTA,

so not sure what can be received OTA at that locale.

CBS and PBS were mapped to 730 and 731 up until a few days ago, but now they are on 103-1 (CBS) and 103-2 (PBS). Create is on 103-1, all in the clear now.

I live at Las Vegas Blvd and N. Nellis Blvd and get a great signal, in fact it's the best picture of all the stations. Maybe the switch they made to 11.1-11.4 will improve your picture. There is nothing on 11.4. (It's datacasting for the Las Vegas Digital Emergency Alert System.) Also, they should be mapping to 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3, but they're not sending PSIP data (which probably explains the problems people seem to be having).

What is the latest info on Tivo and Cox.
Mike
Demodave 12-02-06, 12:03 AM Hey Vegggas! The obvious question: What HD channels are next on Cox? I hear that ESPN2HD is popping up on several Cox systems. But what about Nat Geo HD? Food HD? HD Net?
According to the Cox info channel.....ESPN2HD and ESPNU will be added Dec 12. Now....how about espn360 internet service availability?
GeorgeLV 12-02-06, 02:51 AM That means it's time for a new Las Vegas HD channel guide!

coyoteaz 12-02-06, 04:42 AM Look for iNHD2 to disappear when ESPN2 HD goes live. Cox Phoenix dropped iNHD2 and added ESPN2 HD at the same time. FSN HD, OLN HD, NFLN HD, etc are now shared with iNHD.
Starting December 12th:
704-ESPNHD
705-ESPN2HD !
Wonder what that means for 707 when INHD2 goes dark. It's nice they are adding ESPNU to 320 as well. No CSTV though.
Wow! This is great news!!
According to the Cox info channel.....ESPN2HD and ESPNU will be added Dec 10. Now....how about espn360 internet service availability?
vegggas 12-02-06, 02:34 PM Espn2HD and ESPNU will added on 12/12 (assuming no issues)
INHD2 will be merged with INHD1 on 1/1
Digital simulcast should be complete or nearly complete by 1/1 (assuming no issues)- It looks like it's most of the way there on my node (missing Sci-fi and USA).
Tivo will be launched behind Comcast. Look for Comcast dates and then add a few months for Cox launches (due to politics and contracts). Moto STB's will be ported first, then SA STB's later - That means a longer wait for Las Vegas.
My personal take is that Tivo is beig ported to Moto, but a new OCAP version will be available for SA and compatible STB's.
More EOD programming coming, including network and HD stuff, etc.
New commercials and info coming showing the new Cox - someting about anything, anytime, anywhere - more later

vegggas 12-02-06, 02:45 PM ESPN360 is probably not going to happen.
They want payment for every internet subscriber from a domain to allow access to the site.
Cox does have bundled internet packages to paid websites with a single fee and single password, but I don't subscribe to them or know the details.

vegggas 12-02-06, 02:50 PM GeorgeLV,
Could you edit your list to exclude the line items for East and West premiums?
How about adding E/W on the line and designating E or W on the channel number? It may make it easier to read. Right now, it's hard to compare who has what.
Note that NBATVHD is also on Cox INHD channel during games.

Done. I added NBA TV to Cox, D* and E* as a part-time channel and removed INHD2 from Cox, since it's leaving whether it be on 12/12 or 1/1.
Will 707 still be kept around for HD special events, or will the main INHD channel be preempted once INHD2 is gone?
GeorgeLV 12-03-06, 01:07 AM KLVX has their PSIP back up, so hopefully the problems that many people were having should be fixed. Also, the datacasting is down, at least for now. PBS SD and Create are now splitting bandwidth roughly equally (2.29 Mbps and 2.19 Mbps) so the local PBS SD looks much, much, better and Create is bit worse. Now, if the datacasting isn't returning, there is enough bandwidth to add another subchannel, like PBS Kids, without further degrading the HD service.

I read on dslreports that Comcast will be beta testing Tivo in January and it will be available in late spring.

There is also an HD PPV channel that is only in the guide for special events.
My educated guess is that A&E HD (Sopranos in Jan) will replace INHD2 in Jan, but that is pure speculation on my part. They are not pulling INHD2 to insert ESPN2, instead, they are allowing the channel to continue until it goes dark, so both channels will be available for a few weeks.

I'd recommend starting out with a cheap radio shack antenna (i.e. bunny ears or bowtie). If you read any signal strength at all, then go ahead and start looking for a higher end antenna. If not, reliable reception probably is not a very good possibility at your location.
jedster 12-03-06, 08:13 PM It doesn't look like Sunday Night Football is in HD. At least the pregame is 4x3 SD only so far. Anyone have a contact # or e-mail at KVBC that I could call? I'm a Hawks fan and I need my HDTV!
Thanks.
EDITED: Sweet. It's in HD. That was just the pregame. Sorry to panic.

Yes, I was just hoping that someone might have some "good" experience :D
I already have a cable in the attic and a power receptacle nearby so i can use a powered antenna if I need to....
In my previous house (ft.apache/flamingo) I had a "wing" shaped antenna in the attic that worked great with my HD-Tivo, but as I am now old I cannot remember which model antenna it was
OrangeKid 12-04-06, 08:57 PM I have had a Tivo Series 3 for about a month here in Vegas. Cox installed two cable cards and all seemed to go well. Soon afterward, I noticed that channel 725 MHD is not received. I did receive it when I had the SA 8300 HD BOX. Cox has sent out two technicians and were unable to resolve the problem. All other channels including SD, HD and premium SD and HD come in fine. After several calls from the 2nd level tech to Cox he said that channel 725, which went on line on Oct 17, is not received currently by cable cards and there is no ETA for a fix. Cox did confirm that it is a cable card issue and not a HD Tivo problem.
The signal strength was tested and it is fine according to the two techs.
On the Tivo forum I did get a response from some else in Vegas who also does not receive 725 on their HD Tivo. I received a reply from someone in Orange County, CA who has no problems with MHD. They use Motorola CC in Orange County.
Any one have any idea what the problem is or what to do next?

"Cox did confirm that it is a cable card issue "
"... is not received currently by cable cards and there is no ETA for a fix"
Well they told you what the problem is!
What to do next?
Well you can wait for Cox to fix the problem if they ever will, rent a SA DVR from Cox for $240 a year, live without MHD, or change providers.
Over here at Dish we have no such problems and although we don't get MHD, which to me is cRAP anyway, we have the RAVE channel which is 24/7 live music.
foghorn2 12-04-06, 09:08 PM BTW, does "refreshing" a cable box "refresh" the box and a cable card?

It seems to as it corrected misassigned channel when Cox moved some channels around.
I am new to the HD world and my new MITS 57732 arrived today. I have Cox cable and the TV is connected directly to the cable. When I tune to the HD stations (7xx range) I get a beautiful HD picture, but it is riddled with audio and video dropouts. The audio will cut out for about 1 second every minute or so and the video freezes for a second and then jumps ahead. My older DVD player plays 480p just fine. Is this a problem with the TV or with Cox? I have no way to determine signal strength. I have not tried OTA yet.

Checking the schedule tonight, the old Outdoor Life Network "OLN" which is now called "Versus" has the rights to NHL Hockey. They broadcast HD games on the INHD channel. Tonights Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens on Versus is in HD on the INHD channel, However it follows right after the NBATV game.
INHD is the catch all for all the part time HD channels - They even debuted the "Monsters HD" channel a few years ago and the E (entertainment network) debuts.

Those Versus NHL HD games may disappear in January since Comcast is launching it as a sort of full-time channel. (It will be combined with the Golf Channel which will be the primary programming in day time, Versus will be the primary programming at night.) So far DirecTV is the only other provider that has signed on to carry it.

Sounds like a low signal to noise issue. You are not running the cable through a surge supressor are you? They are notorious for adding noise and degrading the signal.

Cox already has agreements to carry Versus NHL games in HD and it also carries the Golf Channel. Nothing to stop distribution of the HD channel. INHD2 is not going anywhere until Jan and ESPN2 is being added next week, so it could be another un-announced deal.

Demodave 12-05-06, 11:09 AM Vegggas,
Any word on when Cox will do the software update for the SA8300HD boxes? It's been available in other markets for quite a while now. I am mainly wanting to fix the problem of getting kicked out of playback of a show that I am currently recording once the recording ends. The 4x FF would be groovy too.
I called Cox yesterday and requested the upgrade to v1.88. The person I spoke to mentioned they will do it if it's available. I saw someone else post success with calling Cox and specifically asking for the upgrade and getting it.
We will see if I have any success, but they mentioned they will call me back by this Saturday.

Whats' wrong with those flockers? A week ago they were coming up on 11.1, 11.2 and now this.
I also noticed that 8 is not always consistant in power.

Well, even though Channel 10 is a one of the better funded PBS stations, and the end of the day they still are a PBS station. One of the positives of their equipment woes is that it appears the character generator that puts their logo on the upper left of the HD channel is temporarily gone.
As for channel 8, their digital in on VHF channel 7 so you're probably just running into the kinds of interference issues that VHF is susceptible to. Their signal is pretty consistent where I'm located.
