Mother here - and wine lover - Currently open - "Drop Dead Red" and "Woop Woop" Chardonnay. I am also fond of "My Dog Blue" - a little on the sweet side, but great in the summer (with a really cool cobalt blue bottle and cork that says "Woof Woof" (not to be confused with the "Woop Woop" wine);)

Just bought a case of different wines at the Wine Warehouse here in town, so I am set for a while...

At the moment, just about any varietal with a Barefoot label. Publix had them on sale 3 for $8! (that's 'eight exclamation', not 'eight factorial') Priced like Two Buck Chuck, but much better than any $10/liter plonk. I laid in three mixed cases (Cab, Syrah, Zin, Savignon Blanc, Chardonnay - left the Merlot on the shelf). :D

The Chardonnay is particularly interesting. In style kinda like a Pinot Grigio - no wood or malalactic flavors at all. The Zin is our favorite, though, and I'm a Zin snob.

What's your plonk?

CPanther: DeeAnn is busy, but since ya asked, here's the full scoop.

I got a call on Friday night from CHP that they had recovered the car and that it wasn't stripped, damaged or burned (who knew burned didn't equal damaged).

I also found out the plates had been recovered by CHP earlier this week on a different stolen car (and they supposedly still have them - haven't transferred them to DMV yet), so I should be able to pick them up on Monday. Also found out that they arrested the guy, too, as he was caught driving it without plates on Friday. All of our stuff was gone from inside. Nothing valuable - 3 dumb punk rock CD's and one of DeeAnn's Foo Fighter CD's, the Sony portable CD player that a friend gave us, the blanket on the back seat, as well as the zebra headrests DeeAnn made, old clothes, one new sweater of DeeAnn’s, some old screwed up shoes, and some empty boxes. Also, our crappy pink flashlight. Oh, they left all of the papers that were in the glove box (various directions to places, old proof of insurance cars, old registrations), but the current reg is gone. I had the current proof of insurance in the house.

What came back with the car? An obviously stolen stereo in the back seat, a bunch of master car keys (both of which I'll give the cops when I get the plates), a collection letter to the guy for a prior apartment he didn't pay for, addressed to him at his current residence, various credit card slips signed by him (same name as the collection letter is addressed to), a Leatherman Super Toolkit (minus the leather case) - retails around 55 bucks, two gas cans - one large with a cap; one small with no cap, a bunch of his old dirty clothes that reeked of gas (right into the garbage, those went), a visually beat-up Panasonic portable CD player that sounds pretty damn good, but takes forever to seek tracks, a few screwdrivers, a bunch of car spray paint and primer, a mammoth bottle of Dot 3 brake fluid, some damaged, burned CD-R's (went into the trash) - I think that's about it. So yeah, we have his name and address. I found a picture of the mobile home park is living in – I was going to post a link to it, but DeeAnn said not to.

The car came back really grimy on the inside. Took a couple of hours to scrub all of that out. They did mark in ink a few places with dumb things, which I haven't gotten out yet - there's some stuff that runs like 8 bucks that I picked up today. It didn't work. Neither did rubbing alcohol or WD-40 (hey, I read it is supposed to work). A few random scratches on the dashboard that weren't there before. There are some red paint rubs and scratches to the driver side front fender. Don't know if those were there before, as I didn't notice them until I washed it yesterday. It also seemed to be pulling to the right a little, but that may be just me expecting it to do something wrong - hopefully, I'll get a better feel for it in the next couple of days.

It also had no gas at all (there was only 1/4 tank when it was taken). I didn't even think I'd make it the 1/4 mile to the gas station from the tow yard, but I did. And the car reeked of gas, but that mostly went away fairly quickly after I threw out the clothes. Faint fume smell today. Oh, apparently he is a non-smoker - the ashtray was emptied AND washed. Too bad they didn't vacuum the inside, but I did now.

Oh, they busted out one of the air vent controller/directional thingys - it's in the middle and the one for the passenger. That puzzles me a bit. Only the one. But yeah, I think that's it, so all in all, not so bad. I do wish they had left a small plush cat that was in there, the bat (that was hanging from the rear view that we have had since the first, old Corolla we got in the 80’s), and the really old beat-up Daffy Duck air freshner (also had since that first 70's Corolla) that said "You're Despicable." And those headrest covers DeeAnn made. Good thing I worry about the important stuff, huh? But oh, well. Guess they weren't car thief cool. Oh, they did leave the AM/FM-cassette player fully intact.

I kind of wish there was something I could do with the guy's name and address. I hope he's at least thinking about the fact that we probably have that info now.

It was $180 to get it out of the lot (120 for the tow, plus 60 for 2 days storage). At least they let me get it on Saturday - lots of places won't apparently. But I almost couldn’t. The cop (Sac Sheriff) that pulled the guy over and ultimately arrested him wrote up the paperwork incorrectly for the tow company. He wrote it up as not stolen. So the tow company was saying they wouldn't release it until I got a release from the Sheriff's office, which couldn't be until Monday (if it is stolen, you don't need that). To make things worse, when the plates were recovered by CHP, it was mis-entered as cleared on the plates, but stolen on the VIN (plates should show up as recovered stolen property for 30 days according to the CHP), so they screwed that part up. It took 2 1/2 hours between the CHP and Sac Sheriff (who I could only get ahold of because CHP gave me a secret number, since they knew I was getting screwed) to get someone to talk to the tow company and send them stuff showing it *was* a stolen car.

By the time I got to the tow yard, they apparently were technically closed, but I went with this girl who had a cel phone (DeeAnn and I don’t), so we called them and they let us in to get it.

AND... on Friday night, our immediate neighbor's car was broken into again, so it is not the same guy, as he was in jail on Friday night. Night before that? Neighbor's car on their other side also broken into *again* - and apparently another stolen car just around the corner on Tuesday.

I talked to a different neighbor I know one street over last night Their son who used to work for me, is a Sheriff now. Apparently he drives down their street every night on his way home and lights it up, around 1 AM. They’re going to have him do that with our street now, too, every night. Can't hurt, I suppose.

At least our car made it through the night last night unharmed. We'll see what happens tonight!

The landlord guy is going to put in a motion sensor floodlight thingy over the driveway tomorrow or Tuesday, which shouldn't hurt, either.

deeann
05-08-05, 09:47 PM
Thank you, Lurch4711 for filling in. :D

Since I forgot to tell him that his first post to this thread should actually have what he's drinking- it's Berry-Blue Kool-Aid with vodka. As for myself- I'll be starting a vodka lemon/lime soda (once again, just finished up work, else I might have started a bit earlier as it's Sunday).

Also, our crappy pink flashlight.

It was a usable flashlight, you just had to shake it. Okay, it did kind of suck. But it was my crappy dollar store flashlight, dang it, not some dumb car thief's (well, I guess it isn't his either now).

****

Oh- the spare tire and jack are still with the car. And he didn't take off the Pirelli tires either.

CPanther95
05-08-05, 11:46 PM
That sucks.

He's probably out of jail by now.

Maybe you should leave a note in the car for next time that says "Fuel gauge is broken, half-tank is actually empty". At least you might get some gas out of the deal next time.

PamW

Lurch4711 and deeann,

I have to keep telling myself "It could have been a lot worse".
As for the ink marks, have you tried Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and/or Goo Gone? The Magic Eraser is about the most wonderful ink getter - upper I've ever dealt with (I have 2 boys 22 months apart - I've done my share of ink cleaning!) - AND it does wonders for soap scum as well!

I can erase paint pen with Goo Gone. I work during the Christmas season at a toy store that personalizes things, and we use the stuff all the time.

Oh, it's 7:30 in the AM, so no drinks, but last night - Villa Cieri Albore Pinot Grigio.

Deeann and Lurch,

So what's the new car going to be?

FWIW, I agree with Pam...it could have been a whole lot worse!!

Material possessions can be replaced...people can't.:)

deeann
05-09-05, 02:19 PM
CP, that reminds me of the the "no stereo" signs that were on cars for a while in (I think) San Francisco (or maybe Berkeley or Oakland, it was somewhere in the Bay Area) a few years back. People would write it on a piece of paper and tape it inside one of the windows.

Pam, yep, it could have been *way* worse and so far it looks like it came back pretty darn good. Thanks for the the ink removal suggestions, we'll try them!

Our neighbors car was just broken into again the night before last (while "our" guy was in jail) so it looks like more than one person.

Rich, we're gonna keep this one now that we've got it back. Our landlord is installing a motion sensor floodlight on the house. And we're having the car re-keyed. The passenger side door handle is a bit funky now, it pulls out a bit to far when the door is opened (like it was pried). The guy from the re-keying place is fixing that. Yep, I agree that possessions can be replaced. A while back I think I posted something in the flat panel forum about a former co-workers son who happened to go back home for lunch and interrupted a robbery in progress. It did not end well.

Current drink- coffee, black.

You know, ever since I had a near death experience with alcohol poisoning in college, I became simply a beer drinker. It's a little more difficult to go overboard that way. Recently, however, thebland introduced me to a few wines. Now I love an Oregon inexpensive brand and I now keep a case on hand. :D Strange, I spell a lot better that way, I do however tend to get a little too mushy for my own sober tastes when I go back and read the posts. :D :D

Sorry for just getting in on this. It sounds like you guys came out OK except for a little hassle. I'd say except for them not filling it up for you ............... :D
I just had a friend have her car stolen in Detroit, not such a nice ending. The car was wrecked but the insurance company is not offering almost anything so now those pesky lawyer things have to be mentioned.

Art,
actually I am into wines myself. I really enjoy the Black Opal wines from South-Eastern Australia, in particular their Cab/Merlot blends. 1998 was great, 1999 so so (for wines in general) and 2000+ I highly recommend. After about three to five years on the rack, they really peak.

On the lighter side, Chateau St. Michelle has some outstanding whites. I highly recommend their Riesling, any vintage. Excellent with white fish and sauted baby spinach. Of course I enjoy all of this while in my theater, the perfect compliment to HT.

Care to name your Oregon brand??? I will try it. :) :) :)

you should try the beer :) it is a spicy red 8% beer :)

all their beer names have a "local" flavour (legend, history…)

The name is French for the damned.

Legend has that a bunch of lumberjacks wanted to get home for New years to be with their families but could not because they were too far a way and the snow too deep. They made a deal with the devil who gave them a spell to make a flying canoe, but (like Cinderella) there was a time constraint and needed to be back before day brake and not touch any religious symbol or the devil gets their soul. the people rowed the boat into the air and flew home, partied hard and fell asleep drunk. Woke up and noticed it was getting late (too close to day brake) and so needed to row fast, while going back to the lumber camp they did not notice they were too close to a steeple and just nicked the cross so they never made it back and were damned.

I guess the pic on the bottle is the devil they had the agreement with, the canoe in the air flying at almost daybreak back to the camp

Hello sdspga and welcome to the thread! Yep! It is cheaper than Ebay, the only thing to watch out for now is "system tweaking while intoxicated". :D

Pam- the Merlot sounds wayyyyyy better than Diet Coke.

Kipp is here!!!

Check out the railings Scott installed in my house this past weekend. I was filming him in HD doing the install with my Sony HD Camcorder. As usual he was hitting the kegerator while working... :) :) :) I still have to paint the rails all white. It really turned out beautiful. The last pic is Scott after he had his 20th beer and fell to the floor trying to catch a drop of beer that splashed out of his cup. He did a great job while being wasted.

Kipp Jones
01-16-06, 10:39 PM
Scott- 12 beers? You got a hollow leg or something?

Yes he does. Let me tell you about a little camping story....

I thought I was the master pee-er. Scott and I were out camping and we brought a keg to drink from. I challenged Scott that I could pee more than he could. I went into the tent, filled a 32oz cup and said beat that. So Scott goes in and fills up not one cup, but two. I could not believe it. He is the "P" master!!!

ScottaDowns
01-17-06, 07:28 AM
Ahh Kipp yes I am the master of the "urnine hold" I once held my bladder so long that my teeth started to float. Now Kipp get off your lazy ass and paint those rails. I know the kegerator is making it very hard for you to start.

For those of you who don't know Kipp Jones has a Keg on tap at all times. Chilled to a perfect 31 degrees. Ahh the beer is good. I can taste it now.

Ok, it is 8:54 EST and I am sitting with my laptop and a cold draught beer on the beach in St. Pete Beach. I am going through HD withdrawl as the tv in my suite is SD. I cannot help look at the large scan lines and square picture. Sure the local bars have HD but the display needs calibration and are on a satellite feed so what they think is HD is really DVD plus. Artifacts all over the place and the pq is blurry.

I took a trip down to the local BB and they really had cable with InHD on and for the most part looked really good. All in all I miss my HDTV. I hear we had 4" snow last night in Chicago. Scott Downs are you boozen and shoveling??? Hello, HBO-HD??? Are ya there? My only comfort is my Sony HD camcorder. I know I will have some beautiful HD to watch from everything I shot here to watch when I get home Monday night.....Hey bartender...I'll have another...ps, its 78 degrees right now.....:-p

I liked Marilyn Merlot. It used to be about $3 something a bottle but then it got popular.

Kipp, are you liking the camcorder? At some point I'll need to get an HDV one.

Being on a trip sounds even better than HD! But when I was going to go down to LA a few months ago I was going to make a "takealong" kit with a (small but not too small) LCD TV, DVD player and OTA tuner (but I ended up not going).

Scott- owww.

Coca-cola + vodka. Going out tonight so getting ready. :) Just rebuilt one of the PCs and my heads full o' the cobwebs.

Hell ya buddy. IM in. When we shootin...

I think your porn star name should be ScottaHotta. You should totally keep the glasses 'cause chicks dig that.

Kipp- I'm usually a pretty easy sell on the WAF, most times I'm the one working to convince the hub we need something new. He's all fevered up right now with the flu or something- the the evil streak in me want to expolit that to let him know we need an HDV camera (before he gets better and comes to his senses) . :D

So.... just finished some of the last stuff on the rebuilt PCs, except for the one in the living room, it needs a new sound card (I threw an old Soundblaster Live in there for now since I pulled the one I was using for another machine, it's not bad, but not really multi-channel). I'm gonna have to head on over to the HTPC section to see what's new and good.

Vodka + Sunny-D. Lot's of vitamin C 'cause I don't want to catch what he has.

ScottaDowns
02-02-06, 07:12 AM
Ya Deeann that might be my new name. My Old name was Johnny Bravo!. Funny you mention sound cards. I just tossed one out while I chucking my beer cans into the trash. A real nice sound blaster 7.1 Dolby card. I was like IM never going to use this again.
