View Full Version : Cruising the AVS Forum while intoxicated...
Kipp Jones 07-09-02, 11:00 PM Ok....I picked the HD Programming forum for this due to those of us who consume alcohol are more than likely watch HD programming while drinking. I actually try to both at the same time (only on occasion in moderation). KenH, Alan and David, please do not delete this thread as AVS has been such a great outlet for being in touch with its members. Yes, I am PWI (posting while intoxicated). I am enjoying a 1999 merlot cab blend right now.
Between cruising the AVS and watching HD, I feel the HD experience with a nice wine can go hand in hand. The two are to be savored in a multi-sensory experience. How many of us do this???? Please share your experiences....
tonyb100 07-09-02, 11:06 PM try it with morphine... just kidding I'm in the hospital and they have me hooked up to this blasted pain med pump, I wasn't useing it so they set it on auto..... actually I don't recommend it they don't go hand in hand.. (it makes me dizzy and sick.) thankfully I have the avsforum to distract me.. :):):)
ragedogg69 07-09-02, 11:07 PM a quote from Liar Liar:
"Click click deleted"
Dean Roddey 07-09-02, 11:43 PM You mean some of you cruise AVS without being on morphine? Wow, I hadn't realized that. This leaves me at a loss to explain some of what I read here :-)
Hic! Well, someone evrenturarlerly wath gonna blo the withel. Thankth a lot Kipp! Here's (http://www.groundzero.to/otherstuff/ben/ben&gina-toga%20party.jpg) a pixthure of me and the wife in our serfthin' grear. Thee my nipple? <hic> <thump!> <ouch!>

Isn't that the truth!:D
I tried AVS last night while on a nice percodan & flexoril high (screwed up back) after trying to read a few posts I realized that I wasn't able to focus well enough to read and gave up. The HDTV didn't look so good either so I just stumbled to the bedroom and passed out.
I can't imagine why the warning labels say to not drive or operate machinery whaile taking these medications...
arthurvino 07-10-02, 10:28 AM lol, nice thread.. try "rollin" while watching flying through Canada in HDTV on HDNet..
remember when tom snyder still did the late late show after letterman? he would encourage all his viewers to drink while they watched, saying, "fire up a colortini" ... perhaps if he were still on in the digital tv age his phrase of choice would be "fire up an hdtini".
drinking wine while watching hd? no way! to quote blue velvet: "f*** that s***... PABST BLUE RIBBON!"
it's an economical thing. i'm in college :)

I had no idea about Snyder. That is a good idea. I really like the "fire up an HDtini". :)
Any chance we can get a smile to add to the posts to indicate if we have been boozen?? There is one open space in the "smilies" box. Anyone care to offer up their version of a PWI smiley?
Kipp: I like that "boozin' smiley" idea.
I've found that the first bottle of Cab enhances your creativity and enjoyment of online posting. The second bottle makes it tougher to read think and type, but you enjoy it just the same. And the third bottle has you searching the forums the following morning in order to edit or delete the really dumb stuff you posted earlier in the morning... :D
Man (to WC): "You're drunk!"
WC: "Yeah, and you're crazy. And I'll be sober tomorrow and you'll be crazy for the rest of your life."
From the WC Fields movie, It's a Gift!

Not sure what movie, but I thought it went more like this:
"Society" woman (to WC): "Sir, you are drunk!"
WC: "And madam, you are ugly! Tomorrow I'll be sober but you'll still be ugly!"
Forceflow 07-10-02, 05:18 PM yes, in the Winston Churchill Documentary on HBO? they did his famous quote to the "Society" woman commenting on his intoxication. Classic line... "I may be drunk, but madam, you are ugly... Tomorrow I'll be sober and you'll still be ugly."
I also thought that it was Ugly and not Crazy, but after checking some web sites which listed the quote, they both said what I posted and not the Ugly quote. Maybe it is just another case of Revisionist History and Political Correctness?
I used the cruise the forum while plastered, but stopped after I heaved into the keyboard. Now I resort to a couple of bongers and I'm all set.

RScogland 07-11-02, 03:49 PM Technical advice for "Cruising the AVS Forum while intoxicated" ...
Get a universal learning remote with macros, and use discrete codes if at all possible, so you can easily navigate a potentially difficult A/V system.
Nothing is worse than hitting the wrong button and "losing HDTV while intoxicated." If this happens, do NOT under any circumstances, attempt to "rewire HDTV while intoxicated!"
... and it should go without saying that one should NEVER attempt to re-aim their roof mounted (or in my case pine-tree mounted) eliptical dish while intoxicated especially in a rainstorm (the hint should be that the rain is the likely problem).
P.S. - Do not expect TiVo functions to suddenly start working with Satellite HDTV while intoxicated!
And, never, never, never get paranoid and reset all your passwords while intoxicated. You will never remember them the next day... ;)
Arpacian 07-11-02, 05:22 PM I'll never confess, convict me if you can.

That is a scary thought. I had a root canal today and I am on Vicodone for a while. The only problem I am having is I keep mistyping. All of the colors look really bright!
when guest are over, I usually make a point of offering a beverage before firing up the system. Maybe the dlp projector has something to do with it, but I think that a drink or two really does help pq.
wonder if it would possible to successfully develop a standard “user-calibration” procedure.

turbobuick86 07-14-02, 02:19 PM heh... I now make it a point never to post on a forum or send email while intoxicated. Seems 99 times out of 100, I regret some or all of which wrote as it will lack tact or diplomacy.

Don Landis 07-14-02, 06:33 PM WC Fields was never sober the next morning. He stayed drunk to avoid a really bad hangover.

Kipp Jones 07-14-02, 11:19 PM Don,
you ever do a little boozen while your on board here?
Great thread, Kipp and company!
I've been on planes a lot lately, sipping Johnnie Walker Black in the business sections and reading Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing series again - great reads and a wild blast from the past! This thread reminds me of HST! I too have noted my need for post-posting editing sessions after enthusiastic keyboard dancing, enlivened by either the grappa (evening) or too much java!

Kipp Jones 07-15-02, 11:01 AM John,

Mike,
you need to visit the HD porn thread in a hurry!:D
Kipp Jones 07-15-02, 10:28 PM O.k. how about this, intoxicated while watching HD Porn? Any thoughts???
Dean Roddey 07-15-02, 10:40 PM Well, if you are watching HD Porn at this point, you are already hallucinating, so you are good where you are. Just stay there.
tonyb100 07-16-02, 03:32 AM boozen and cruisen the Boards while intoxicated can be dangerous to your equipment. As are nurses with syringes of saline.. yep one killed my laptop last week!:( ( not paying attention to what she was doing... but what can ya do she didn't mean to...
And it was only a month and three days old :(:(:( now I'm using one of the hospitals which they loaned me because of the incident. they said to make sure I get insurance on any future laptops, saying that that computer insurance covers accidental damage. anyone know if that is true? sound to good to be true to me; especially on something like a laptop.
sorry to go so far off topic.. but cut me some slack I'm in morning over my loss..:);)
-tony
Tony: Sorry to hear of your loss... Can you remove the hard drive and recover the data at least?
I know all about nurses with syringes of saline. 20 years ago, when my then girlfriend was in nursing school, she was told to practice injections on an orange. Still, an orange isn't exactly like injecting a real person, so I offered my arms. Several injections later, she was confident in giving her first supervisor-observed injections. She later said that my pin cushion offer was one of real love, and she got her first real inclination that I was the one for her... In the years since, now married more than 19 years, I haven't had to thankfully offer up my arms again. :)

Tony,
why are you in the hospital?

funny I was just thinking about this thread earlier- a classic- and wondering how to" revive "it

Holidays? Who the hell needs the holidays as an excuse to get loaded?!
Haven't you guys heard of Oktoberfest?? Besides I was in Lowe's on Thursday and the Christmas decorations are up.

i missed this before; since thread is backup I saw it.
I have cystic fibrosis and need a lung transplant so get hospitalized often, several times a year. :( The nurses joking refer to one on the rooms as tony's house.... so you can see I spend too much time there.. anyway thanks for asking.
re: insurance, thanks for the suggestion.
re: topic.
So does anyone watch hd tv better, with a few in'em ...:)
Just dont get too inspired and order a couple plasma displays for the bedrooms.
Kipp Jones 10-15-02, 01:23 PM HDTV looks better with a few in me....
Good idea for the plasmas in the hospital room. Now only if insurance will cover it.
tonyb100 10-15-02, 02:24 PM Maybe they could be tricked into thinking I needed plama; which in that case I do. :D
Kipp Jones 10-15-02, 04:19 PM LOL!
Just thought I'd resurrect this thread in honor of new year's eve, since I'm totally wasted and about to crash for the night.
Happy New Year's to all!!!!!!!
johnwcookjr 01-01-03, 04:29 AM Happy New Year all,
Jeff, your resurrection of this thread is quite apropos.
John
So the question is, while intoxicated and searching for this thread did you:
Actually spell "intoxicated" correctly?
Use "crusing" instead because it is shorter with fewer alternate spellings?
Have your designated driver perform the search before s/he left?
Use a previously created bookmark?
Make your eight-year-old do the search telling her/im "intoxicated" means "full of love"?
:p . ;)
I searched for (and spelled correctly) intoxicated. It took quite a bit of concentration to make my fingers hit the correct keys, though. :D
Kipp Jones 04-26-03, 06:46 PM So Tony, do any of the drugs they give you for your condition affect your HD perception in any way?
BudShark 04-26-03, 10:20 PM Damn someone's had a few if they went in search of this thread... and commented on a 4 month old post.

Kipp Jones 04-30-04, 02:20 PM Yeah, it is a fun thread.....
If your display is out of calibration, just have a few beers. Once the beer googles are on, everything looks good!!!
markrubin 04-30-04, 02:31 PM I helped out a forum member who needed calibration of his plasma:
turns out he lives 2 minutes away from me and is a wine connoisseur with an impressive wine cellar: in return for my help, he turned me on to some excellent Merlot's and Cab's
Funny, though I have determined his display seems to require recalibration every week:D
muniman 04-30-04, 03:57 PM hey mark! FDOFLMAO!
i'm thinking of introducing the wine & vine PQ enhancement system.
designed for one evenings use to gradually improve your PQ! after full installation, PQ improves until you pass out on the couch.
i assume you're available for a beta - test?:D

Nahhhh all that is necessary is a half-gallon of bourbon and a two liter coke, and everything is OK
BTW I love the drinking smiley up above that is labeled my favourite, LOL thats me and my friends every friday night starting with Happy Hour!
muniman 04-30-04, 04:14 PM WHOA! a fifth of bourbon and a 2 liter coke? that's industrial calibration!
D-rock0030 04-30-04, 04:20 PM No not a fifth, thats not small time stuff there, a half gallon will get the job done right!

Mark,
I am requesting that you perform many upon many tests just to confirm your results are accurate.;) ;) ;)
The Jones soda/vodka combo (while tasty) ended up being way too sugary for having skipped breakfast, so balancing it by scarfing down some leftover egg fried rice. Considering either Rolling Rock or Campari with soda water for the next beverage.

And in my case I'd be asleep after the opening credits.

demonspawn 05-04-04, 09:55 PM hey kippjones how long will a keg keep fresh in one of those.
im not a real heavy drinker but i would save all kinds of money buying it by the keg lol!
i need to upgrade from joe 6 pack status!
cruising this forum much safer than cruising in automobile!
Kipp Jones 05-05-04, 02:57 PM Hi demon,
I so far have gone three months and the keg stayed pretty fresh. Usually I would go through a keg every month and a half but since the wife became pregnant, my beer consumption is down. Beer technically never spoils, warmer temps greater than 38 degrees can encourage fermentation which can change the flavor. That is all. I use CO2 as my driving gas. Some prefer Nitrogen.
The cost savings is huge. Each barrel holds 165 beers 12 oz beers (6.875 cases). I purchase each keg for $49 (Miller Lite). The equivalent in cases costs me around $14.00 each. Each keg will save you around $47 in beer costs. The CO2 runs me $13 each time I fill the 5lb tank (each 5lb tank lasts about 7 kegs or so). Electric costs wash as you have to keep both cold anyway. So after 11 kegs, the cooler pays itself off and then you are drinking for around .29 cents a beer. Not too bad. Plus it is a great conversation piece, and your circle of friends will grow. The other benefit is less garbage from the lack of cans and bottles to dispose of. Just think, you will be doing something for the environment!!!:D :D :D
Here is a great source of info: http://beveragefactory.com/faqs/draftbeer.shtml

Electric costs are probably lower since you're not opening the fridge 165 times. (or fewer if you're a double fisted drinker)

Kipp Jones 05-07-04, 10:27 PM Excellent point Pete. Bottoms up!!!
where is the best place to shop for a keg cooler? How much does it add to electricity bill? Thanks, Eric
Kipp Jones 05-10-04, 08:54 AM Check out your local appliance store. The electric bill is slightly affected.

Hi, ramcm7!
And I am an AVS Forum addict. It started a few years ago when I was looking for little tidbits of information. The other members were well versed in the AV arts and sciences and just made me come back for more. (Enablers.) I now find myself keeping a AVS Forumn window open at all times on my PC. Do I have a problem?

Well. I dunno. But, as far as grain-alcohol calories go, 80-proof Vodka= 80 calories/oz. Beer=12-proof=12 calories/oz.
So. An 8oz. glass of Vodka= 640 calories.
An 8oz. beer= 96 calories.

CPanther95 03-18-05, 10:17 AM Periodically, including last night, we get complaints about this thread calling for it to be closed claiming it is both pointless and not topical. I'm moving this to the Home Theater Accessories forum where we regularly discuss home bars, keg coolers, wine chillers, and beer taps - a place where it would be considered topical.
For those of you that are reading this thread sober and find it pointless, consider the alternative: a bunch of intoxicated members posting this "nonsensical" stuff throughout all the AVS Forum threads. If you find no purpose in it, don't report the thread, just avoid it. Just like you would avoid a thread about generating your own theater tickets if that held no interest to you.
I'm moving this at about 10:15 am EST (9:15 Central) in the hopes that Kipp will find it while still sober - I realize I'm cutting it close. ;)

Since it's early- I have a question. Has anyone besides myself accidently set their equipment back to factory defaults after drinking? Sometimes I think I should use the "kiddie" on/off channel changer remote if I've had a few and hide the original and programmable remotes from myself.

cool, I was not the only one that started early this morning. Went to visit my Grandparents this morning and it would be an insult not to have a few shots of the home made hard stuffs when you enter the house and home made wine with lunch. Somehow time just flies when you are there :)

So I'm coming down with a cold. The question is, do I:

or
b) drink, not take cold medicine, but not be as bothered by the cold?
ScottaDowns 03-18-05, 06:25 PM I say pop the pills hit the bottle and be happy. Also why does it seem the music always sounds like "YA MAN KICK ASS". When you been bozzin??????????????????
So that's what that is (and here I was double checking to make sure I hadn't accidently swapped my Harry Connick Jr. and Ministry CDs).
I'll try the usual RotG and soda first to see if it has any perceived effect on the throat swelling.

CPanther95 03-18-05, 08:54 PM Where they are, CVS is bigger than Rite-Aid. It's a drugstore.
AnthonyP 03-18-05, 09:00 PM It's a drugstore.
OK, never heard of that chain, we are not all in the same part of the world :)
It's mostly Rite-Aid, Walgreens (and a few Longs Drugstores) now where I'm at (used to be mosty Payless/Thrifty/Andersons).
Last time I was in Vancouver BC, I went into what I thought was an Army/Navy surplus store (can't remember the name now) and it turned out to be a drugstore also.
What's kind of funny is that the Fry's (computers and A/V equipment store) here also has a beauty/health/OTC drug section in it (but no pharmacy).
Oh yeah- just started #3.
AnthonyP 03-18-05, 09:34 PM well I am dry now, so I better go and start, told my friends I would meet them at 9:30-10, guess I will be late :-)
rickmccamy 03-18-05, 09:45 PM I am so happy to find a woman (even a married one) on this forum!
Well, ya lucked out 'cause there's (I think) three of us (two known to be married) on this particular thread! :D
There's actually a few of us scattered around the forum - but some of the women use gender-neutral names so you wouldn't actually know if they are female or not.
Finishing drink #4. Spellcheck is my friend.

Kipp Jones 03-19-05, 09:40 AM Kipp is not feeling too well, he caught a cold yesterday and has been out of commission ever since so he is relying on all of you to make up for the boozen he is not doing especially Dee, CPanther and PB10King!!!
CPanther95 03-19-05, 09:50 AM Got my resupply of limes and last night had 2 T&T and they floored me. Since my wife makes my drinks for me, I can generally tell when she thinks I'm in a crappy mood by how much Gin she puts in my drink. If 2 drinks (granted they're big 20 oz. with lots of tonic - so I can drink them like soda or beer) floored me, that means that today I have to be very attentive to her. ;)

Oh, no! I hope you don't get what I have had - One week of suffering - Including the dreaded fever and a cough that won't stop! I am looking forward to my first post-illness margarita (Fat Mama's Knock you Naked!!)
CPanther95 03-19-05, 10:20 AM I'm on my 4th series of antibiotic - Walking Pneumonia is all over the place (Whooping Cough is also seeing a surge this year) I had about 4 or 5 days of feeling crappy with a cough and about 3 weeks with just a cough (gradually decreasing chest congestion) - just about 100% now.
We're headed out with a picnic lunch and a few bottles of wine, to go to the Bayou City Art Festival. (http://www.bayoucityartfestival.com/) The wine is the only way I can get through the booth after booth of the same stuff... for the most part. ;)
Of course, the wine also makes me more agreeable to my wife's purchases as we walk along through the festival. :D
Sounds like we need a new thread called "Cruising the AVS forum while sick" ;)
Right now I'm feeling a little better than yesterday, not sure how long that's gonna last though. I hope you feel better soon too, Kipp.
CPanther95- that sounds nasty- hopefully the antibiotics will knock it out soon. Sometimes I've had to switch to different ones for respiratory infections as the original just wasn't doing it.
Pam, I'm glad you're feeling better!
Craig- take enjoyment in the fact you can laugh at us when we post really dumb stuff. :D
merc, enjoy!

Sorry, I re-read that and it sounds as if I asked you to take the pic, I meant the PBKing to do so. See how boozin affects your grammar??? I am back off the wagon...nothing like a family party and a few rum and diet cokes to make ya feel better!!! Alcoholics in the house say "hell yahhhhh" "hell yahhhhh!!!
suffolk112000 03-20-05, 01:01 AM OK... not to throw the thread to far of on a tangent, but is anyone drinking something so potent that it could be classified as an alternate fuel source?? ;)
My uncle brought some moonshine up from Tennessee one time. We poured a small amount in a glass and it made the prettiest blue flame you ever saw. Never tried it though. I am a light weight.
Craig
Kipp Jones 03-20-05, 01:17 AM I have had some of that in the past and boy is it good straight up!!!
ScottaDowns 03-20-05, 07:23 AM Hey Kipp my house is still to dam cold to brew up some Beer. It has to be at 70 degrees for 2 weeks. Shoot my house is like 30 all year long. Man its only 6am on Sunday I cant wait to get to church so I can hit the wine.......

There are sections of North Carolina where it seems like 10% of the drinkers have bell jars of moonshine under the kitchen sink.
It's clear that I'm a Yankee (or a pansy) cause after drinking some, all I could think of was "maybe in a Jello shot it wouldn't be too bad" :)
Something strange about having to light your liquor on fire to check for safety.

That is sooo wrong. Next you'll be having your wife smuggle in a can of Easy Cheese in her purse.
Kipp Jones 03-20-05, 10:13 AM They already do that. Yes, the wine at church today will be good (helps with the hangover). It is palm sunday, hey PBKing, were going to 10:15 mass at St. Marys in Downers if you want to join us.
Hey, build a special room in your house to brew the beer. No more excuses. It is getting warmer out now so you better have some beer for me by Mermorial day. I want fresh brewed beer and another demo of your PB10 with The Incredibles.
Kipp Jones 03-20-05, 10:17 AM If the wine is tasting good, I may go up a second time and them come home and hit the forum with a buzz. That is why they have the wine towards the end of mass, they want all the drunks out before the buzz kicks in.
rmcgirr83 03-20-05, 10:25 AM I only drink on days that begin with the letter T.
For example:
Tuesday
Thursday
Today
Tomorrow
and of course
Triday, Thaturday and Thunday!!
Last week didn't count...I drank everyday. :(
What else are you going to do while on a Pub Tour in Ireland!! :D
AnthonyP 03-20-05, 11:11 AM Whoa- somehow I don't see that combo lasting long in my stomach...
you should try it, it goes down real easy and is refreshing. I had lived on it for a few months many years ago on vacation in Greece. A bunch of French people that were there introduced me to it. The acronym TGV stands for the 3 alcoholic ingredients but in France it is also the acronym for the high speed train
AnthonyP 03-20-05, 11:58 AM but is anyone drinking something so potent that it could be classified as an alternate fuel source??
don't know as an alternate fuel source, but I did mention home made stuff at my Gramps place yesterday :)
Kipp Jones 03-20-05, 12:56 PM OK, I am back. The wine was a bit weak, maybe the chuch should kick it up to some MD/2020.

Apparently, the wine wasn't sooo bad after all?
What the heck is a "chuch". lol ;)
Blahhh.... sick today and have a fever, but doing some work though.

rickmccamy 03-20-05, 10:04 PM I've always been proud of being an Orangeman, but wait, you Papists get to drink in Church?

If I cruise and booze, it usually with Cpt Morgans and Coke.
And for the sweet tooth, it is Diet Sprite and Vanilla Vodka. Tastes like a liquid Twinkie.
Buzzed in spirit (That work thing gets in the way too often)

I almost edited that out - the last thing this country's health needs is for Hostess to get an idea like that. ;)
GanChan 03-24-05, 05:42 PM So...certain drinks with certain HT experiences?
For examples, vodka martini and James Bond? Or sake and anime? Or Colt .45 and Shaft?
Do you guys match your drink to your film?
Kipp Jones 03-24-05, 08:08 PM I usually will do Rum and Diet Coke for movies and beer with TV. Any good drink suggestions like the one above???
CPanther95 03-24-05, 08:33 PM Generally I prefer Soda for movies, Beer for Sports, and Gin & Tonics every other time.
Movies that are supposed to be stupid - but potentially funny - like Dodgeball, Van Wilder, Harold & Kumar, etc. are exceptions where I'll make sure I'm self-medicating before and during the movie - so I'm in the proper frame of mind. ;)

When I get bored with my Screwdrivers, I go a little short on the OJ and top it off with about 3/4" of Cranberry Juice, cuts the sweetness of the OJ, adds a lot of flavor, and has the look of a Tequila Sunrise. It's called a Madras, remember (if you're old enough) the Bleeding Madras shirts of the early 60's? Hmm, good. Now that I think of it, Tequila Sunrises were pretty good too. ;)

That's my usual. ;)
For day to day pints of Honey Brown from the Kegerator.
Of course I've had my taste buds tickled by:
Beer Bombs, Peaches in Merlot, a nip or two of Jameson (warms your tummy), and an occasional Madras or SeaBreeze.
Hell I'll drink just about anything, except gasoline and I have drank somethings that could very well be construed as gasoline. :D
Generic lemon lime soda with "Vodka of the Gods". On #2 and it probably shows with the quaity of my other posts throughout the forum right now.

I'm getting a new project in soon, should be within the next couple of weeks so there won't be much time for posting (or beverage enjoyment) for a while. :p
