LOL.. you thief on the 1000 post!! I stand corrected I need to get a new antenna that is designed to take advantage of the digital signals so I have a better chance of getting a more stable signal in this area:D
I (and others here) have had great luck with the Zenith Silver Sensor, which is small and runs about $20-30 online. With it, I can get everything but FOX. Might want to try it, to see if it fixes your problem.
Personally, though, I think your problem has to do with a specific interaction between the WPTY signal and some HD tuners, like the HDTivo, and apparently, your tuner.

I'm confused now. :D Not trying to sound rude, but you do understand that WPTY is ABC in Memphis right?

I agree, I'm going to hook up a inside antenna try it, if it doesn't fix it go to CC and see if the display model does it as well. Here is a response I got from WPTY when I addressed the problem to them.
E-mail from WPTY 24
"We've been working on a couple of complaints similar to this. Maybe an MPEG lock problem. Do you have access to an alternate DTV tuner? Be helpful to know if 2 different tuners have the same problem. Can you tune to analog CH24? We transmit both WPTY CH24 and WPTY-DT CH24.1 from the same antenna. You could use analog CH24 to evaluate the reception quality. Does CH24 have ghosting in the picture? CH24's picture quality could provide a lot of information about the condition of 24.1's signal entering your tuner. We are working with the manufacturer of our MPEG encoder to determine possible causes of these kind of problems..."
Seems they are working to resolve issue and working to get it taken care of. I wish someone here at this forum had a Panny TV like mine and could confirm it...LOL save me a trip and hookup time on the display model. I figure it is the station but I wan't be happy until I confirm for sure. I would hate to find out after my 30 days with CC is up on my return policies that it is the TV
Question on the antenna does someone here in town sell the zenith and if not is the one at Best Buy any good here is the info on that one. Terk HDTVi Off-Air HDTV Antenna Thanks again guys

Yes, Question is do you understand that WPTY, ABC, 24.1 are all the same Digital station and that is the one I'm having problems with. :D
You just confused me too when you said its your tuner because everyone else is having problems with ABC not 24.1. The only way to get ABC HD OTA is WPTY /ABC/ 24.1 which 24.1 is my problem or I could just say ABC is my problem. LOL I could add to this confusion by saying that it is actually Channel 25 but it comes in on your TV display as 24.1 but it is WPTY which is the local station for ABC:D
As you can see from the post above it could be the station due to Mpeg Lock, This from the e-mail I got from WPTY/ABC/24.1 OR could be the Antenna that I'm using OR TV of course I'm not going to be happy until I know for sure. Will let you know if the antenna makes a diff. I'm going to try to find a good inside antenna here in town this weekend and give it a shot. That will also give me a antenna that I can carry to CC if it doesn't make a diff on mine I can try on the display at CC. Again THANKS of Your Input

That's how we say it here, for the most part. We will call it either ABC or WPTY. It's implied that its the digital station.

I don't think that it is your tv but the tuner inside of your tv. I'm gonna go check my analog ABC to see what that is looking like, but I am having this issue on 2 different stb's.
As far as the SS, I purchased mine at Best Buy. The might also carry it at CC, Radio Shack, or other local stores. I know other people on these boards don't like Terk antennas, but my best antenna actually was a Terk TV-35. If you compare the Terk that looks like the SS, I read that the SS tested better than the Terk. But you will learn that, unless you are lucky, you will have to work on the OTA stuff to get it just right. Shoot I've had HD since March 2003 and I'm still having to tweak my current antenna just so I can get WMC reliably without knocking out the other stations. A pitfall from living almost right in the middle of all the towers.
Yeah, I actually got my Silver Sensor at Sears, of all places. Gemini also sells the same antenna. I think any of them will work well, just look for one that looks like this:
Gemini at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006FXR9/qid=1097866007/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1_etk-electronics/102-2028118-1500103?v=glance&s=electronics&n=172282)
I know Best Buy sells the same one, but I didn't find it at Radio Shack when I looked.
I don't think that it is your tv but the tuner inside of your tv.
LOL... I think that would be a given. IF it is the TV (Tuner in the TV) I would think I need to try a few things before just assuming so. Now that the Station has confirmed that people are calling in with the same problem I need to check and see if someone else that has this model Plasma can confirm theirs does or doesn't have the same issue with ABC/WPTY/24.1 If not I will head off to CC to test the display but before all that I will try the Zeneth antenna and see if that works first.
I also replied back to WPTY/ABC/24.1 with the info they requested. I also asked for more info regarding Mpeg Lock. Will post when I hear back from them. Thanks guys
ravma479 10-15-04, 08:09 PM We have Enterprise in HD on UPN 30!!!
There are slight audio issues, but it looks GREAT!
THANK YOU UPN!
HDTV_Duffus 10-16-04, 12:18 PM TNHD,
Who did you contact at WPTY? I'm having the same issue with my HDTIVO that several folks have documented. My Tosh DST3000 does not have the stop-start issues, maybe that info will give them additional clues.
It seems that it is looking more at station problem everyday or antenna. I'm still going to confirm this. I picked up a Zenith SS yesterday. I was going to install it last night after I confirmed my set was acting up on 24.1 but, It was a clear night no clouds guess what NO drop out. Not sure if that was the reason or them working on the station. I did receive another e-mail from the station that leads me to lean more toward reception or Station issue. Here is the reply that I got from WPTY/ABC/24.1 regarding my follow up.
Quote:
"FYI I have been working on 24.1 today and tonight. So if you watched tonight you might see black video it's our fault.
The forums do provide a lot of insight into HDTV reception issues. You will probably learn more about your new set on the forums than from me. We continue to research and investigate complaints about 24.1 reception. However, we have alot of folks that receive us fine. I have an older RCA set top box and get 24.1 fine. No video freeze or audio drop outs. However, I first optimized my antenna to analog 24. I moved my antenna in my attic a couple of times before getting a great picture on analog 24. I highly recommend tweaking your antenna to optimize analog 24 first. HDTV tuners continue to evolve. they continue to get better. If you can receive other HD stations fine with no freezing at all and no audio dropout, your tuner is probably ok. I'd say you either have a problem with our signal level/quality at the tuner input or your Mpeg decoder doesn't like a setting in our stream. As tuners evolve, their features expand which means they utilize more of the information in the MPEG stream. It is possible that our encoder could be transmitting a data value that your tuner doesn't like. Let me tell you there is a lot of info in the MPEG stream and it is complex. Usually video freezing problems are usually related to elementary stream buffer problems. Your tuner's buffers might be running out out data which cause the video to freeze. MPEG lock problems are typically just video freezing and audio drop out at the same time. The whole picture will just freeze. If you see a bunch of blocking and video glitching then you likely have an antenna problem. hope this helps...feel free to email me if you have more questions. I will try to help you as much as I can."
tigerpaul2000 10-17-04, 01:51 PM For what it's worth. I haven't been able to get WPTY for a couple of days and same goes for WMC. WLMT, WREG, WPXX, and WKNO are all great.
mx6bfast 10-17-04, 08:22 PM fyi......BestBuy in Wolfchase had 3 HDtivo's in case anyone is looking to get one.

I just watched it (thank you HD Tivo, too!), and it was fantastic. They even got the audio issues sorted out by the second half hour.
Now, let's see the rest of the UPN HD lineup in HD, and then on to the WB shows!
ravma479 10-17-04, 09:28 PM They keep forgetting to switch the HD back on. Anyone care to call? ;)
I just dont feel like it tonight. Maybe whe.. err. if, they forget after the next break... :)
Edit: LOL, not a minute later, and it's back. Someone must be watching the boards..
UPDATE ON MY PANNY Plasma and 24.1 dropping out
Well, I bought a Zenith SS antenna to see if this was the cause of my picture drop out on Channel 24.1 I tried it this weekend and it didn't help one bit. I got my signal meter up to 90% and still doing the same thing.
Next test was to go to Circuit City and see if it was just on my Panny or if the display models would do the same thing. I went up Sunday afternoon. I made sure that WPTY/ABC/24.1 was giving me picture freeze on mine. This due to the fact it doesn't happen all the time. After confirming this I took off with my Zenith SS in hand. Once I got to the Wolf chase store they were very helpful in setting up the test. We hooked up the same Model I have. I tuned first to check my Steelers game to see how they were doing on 3.1 which worked perfect on mine and the display model. I then switched over to WPTY/ABC/ 24.1. I got the signal meter on the TV up to 88% on the display model in the store. After watching for just a few seconds the Display Model does the same thing!! Picture blacks out for just a 1/2 second. Then may go for a minute and do it again. Seems I DON"T have a bad tuner in mine after all. I felt much better but at the same time Channel 24.1 is doing something to the signal that the Pannys doesn't like along with other brand sets people have listed here. I know that My friend is having the same type problem with a Sony Model as well. I felt sure before I went this was the case but I just needed to try it to make sure. I'm going to E-mail WPTY again today to let them know I've confirmed that it is not just my Panny but it could be duplicated in the store on the display model as well. From my last e-mail from WPTY the Engineer stated that he thought it was not my set but something in the signal they are broadcasting. I think confirming this and asking if any thing is being done to resolve this issue will maybe get them to look future into the problem. Again this is the only Station OAT that does this on my set. Will let you guys know what reply I get from WPTY/ABC/24.1
mx6bfast 10-18-04, 09:38 AM Good info.
Also let the dude from WPTY know that this is also happening on my E86. Also ask him to remember to turn the HD feed on. It wasn't on last night.
dirk1843 10-18-04, 12:41 PM Might have gotten lost in the thread.................
It would be nice if we could get a list of phone # contacts for the Memphis stations to let them know when we have a problem. (like forgetting to flip the switch.)
Thanks to anyone who has/posts them.

Villanman 10-18-04, 03:31 PM Does anybody know what the deal with WHBQ FOX13 is? Like when will it be available for the local masses?

2009. :D
Seriously no idea. I would send an email to someone on the website but its under construction for the 2nd week, that I know of. Its been "in planning" for over a year now.
ravma479 10-18-04, 07:59 PM I've heard Spring 2005 is the target date. Yes, that's AFTER the superbowl... YES, that's AFTER the premiere of 24...., Yes, we will miss a good 1/2 of Fox's broadcast season. And with the dish debacle going on, I doubt we will have it any time soon.
On a side note, we'll find out in about 5 minutes if UPN 30 is showing everything in HD. I really hope so, cause I want to see Veronica Mars!
Edit: Nope. nothing yet. Is anyone else having MAJOR issues with CBS? Their feed is VERY screwed up, green and blocky and pixelated here. I even adjusted the antenna, and the choppyness stopped, but not the green.
ravma479 10-18-04, 09:01 PM WREG is actually on the ball tonight. They are running non-stop weather coverage on the analog, but do they simulcast it on the Digital? NO! They pass the HD feed through! :)
hdtvluvr 10-19-04, 07:54 AM Was anyone else getting pixelation and freezes on WREG last night? I had trouble watching CSi Miami and couldn't switch to the analog channel since they were showing weather constantly.
I have a ChannelMaster 8 bay antenna in the attic on the side of the house facing the towers. I also tried a Radio Shack bow-tie antenna (thinking I may have too much antenna)with the same results. All of the Memphis towers are relatively in the same direction (163 to 182 degrees) and are between 10 and 19 miles (WREG is about 16.5 miles)
Is anyone else about this distance from the towers?
ravma479 10-19-04, 02:52 PM The only problems I had were during Still Standing at 7, but that was an issue with their equipment. It was perfect during CSI: Miami. I think there is something wrong on your end.
To be fair, though, I live maybe 7-10 miles from them. Probably less, even.
Sorry... :(
WPTYdude 10-19-04, 05:03 PM WPTY Chief Engineer here...reporting for duty...I've been periodically reviewing posts and wanted to join to help you guys out. I hope to give you updates on what we are doing with our HD on both WPTY 24.1 & WLMT 30.1 and to answer questions you have. I don't have all the answers...I'm learning myself...but will do the best I can to help. I'd like to help with your reception problems for both WPTY-DT 24.1 & WLMT-DT 30.1...
ravma479 10-19-04, 05:06 PM YAY! Thank you so much.
My only request at this point is PLEASE turn HD on for Veronica Mars tonight! :D
It's gonna be a long while before we get WB in HD isnt it? You guys tape delay it right? So you would need something to record it from the satellite and play it back?
You could always get an HD-Tivo or Home Theatre PC ;)
Oh, hey, What happened on Sunday with Housewives and Boston? They were standard, not HD.
Hope you can get the issues worked out for those who are having problems with the channels, and here's hoping for 5.1 and WB soon!
Thanks!
Damon Hill 10-19-04, 05:07 PM Welcome WPTYDude!
Now, if we can just get a WHBQFox13dude on here. ;)
ravma479 10-19-04, 05:10 PM That would require WHBQ to upgrade their technology at the office to something more than a 386 with 4 megs of ram. Heck, they probably can barely get on the internet! ;)

Welcome, welcome, welcome! All we ask is that you get us an many hours of HD programming as you can (like Veronica Mars and someday soon the WB lineup).
And hopefully someday figure out (and fix) the problem that HD Tivo's have with WPTY (it is interesting that the WLMT signal doesn't have any such problems).

hehe, I think this post just scared him. Of course those would be some of my first questions too. In addition to the whole pausing of the DT feed on the HDTivo and also my E86.
It's good to have you on here. I think you are the first engineer to come on this board in Memphis. Thanks again.
NFL game looked great last night. Can't wait to experience it in 5.1
rcoxjd1 10-19-04, 05:39 PM Okay with the information and mis-information going around is anyone here actually getting channel 88 or 89. I have called D* once already and person (I actually talked to 2) were clueless about who gets what when. If someone here is getting baseball games on either channel speak up please. May help the rest of us when we call and complain. :)
WPTYdude 10-19-04, 05:44 PM We should have Veronica Mars in HD tonight...I might have to reset the UPN HD decoder...WB HD requires a recording since we tape delay WB. I'm working on it...As always...comes down to cost... I'm hoping to get setup before Lord of the Rings 11/7...FYI here is latest HD info I have from UPN...

You guys might actually beat Fox to the punch!
UPN doesnt broadcast HD on the weekends, do they?
What about the Monday Night Comedies? Aren't those in HD too?
I can't wait for Veronica Mars tonight! :)

I have been getting the games on 88. I called the day before and since the guy didn't know what was going on he put a waiver in for me. I don't know if that's what did the trick or not, but the next day I had the first game they televised.
The only thing I can say is be nice but be stern.
WPTYdude 10-19-04, 05:53 PM No HD on UPN on weekends that I'm aware of...here is some more UPN HD info...
UPN TO OFFER LARGEST SLATE OF HDTV PROGRAMMING IN ITS HISTORY
Record Five Hours A Week To Be Broadcast in Hi-Def in 2004-2005 Season
UPN will present its largest slate of HDTV programming in the history of the network for the 2004-2005 season, it was announced today by Dawn Ostroff, President, Entertainment, UPN. Half of the network's primetime line-up - a record seven series -will be broadcast in high definition television, beginning with the premieres of all three of UPN's drama series "Veronica Mars," "Kevin Hill" and "Star Trek: Enterprise," and extending to UPN's Monday night comedies "One on One," "Half & Half," "Girlfriends" and "Second Time Around" by November. This brings the Network's weekly HDTV offerings to five hours. Last season, UPN presented two hours of series programming in HDTV, including "Star Trek: Enterprise," as well as select Friday night movies.
"HDTV is going to further enhance what are already high-quality, visually stunning dramas and comedies," said Dawn Ostroff, President, Entertainment, UPN. "We are very pleased to introduce the growing HDTV audience to UPN's programming."
UPN recently added a second hi-def editing suite to its Television City production center, which allows it to significantly increase its HDTV offerings.
UPN HDTV SCHEDULE:
ONE ON ONE MONDAY, 8:00-8:30 PM, ET/PT
HALF & HALF MONDAY, 8:30-9:00 PM, ET/PT
GIRLFRIENDS MONDAY, 9:00-9:30 PM, ET/PT
SECOND TIME AROUND MONDAY, 9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT
VERONICA MARS TUESDAY, 9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT

ravma479 10-19-04, 05:54 PM Ah, did a little digging and answered my own question.

I guess you guys will have that when UPN does?
Edit: LOL, beat me to it! I think the reason there is no HD on weekends is there is a lack of transponder space, plus it's all reruns. It's not your fault, so don't worry about it. :)
rcoxjd1 10-19-04, 06:01 PM mx6bfast thanks for the help. I am on hold now. Maybe this will work. I may have been to stern yesterday. Did you get it with first level of support or where you passed up the chain?
rcoxjd1 10-19-04, 06:14 PM Persistence pays. I called D* again and yes, the customer service person at second level was very nice, well informed and authorized 88 and 89. It did cost me an extra 2.25 per month. I am in so deeply know I guess it does not matter any more.
Villanman 10-19-04, 07:28 PM If someone here is getting baseball games on either channel speak up please. May help the rest of us when we call and complain.
Been getting Ch 88 only and I didn't have to call in .
I called Sunday afternoon during the game and was very polite and calm yet insistent, and the CSR (who was clueless) spent about 10 minutes working on it, and finally asked if she could put me on hold for "3 to 5 minutes" while she asked some other people. When she came back on two minutes later, it was done and I could see channel 88 (but not 89). And no extra charge (for $2.25, I'd want the West feeds, too). She said it will also work when the real Fox HD starts up on channel 86. I then went to the D* website and it showed the fabled "Network: FOX HD_*" under My Account programming services (which is what you want to see).
mike4681 10-19-04, 07:46 PM Newbie here, I'm sure others have posted about the inability to pick up Fox 53 OTA. All I want to know is anyone has actually heard from Fox here in Memphis and when we will be able to pick up the signal.
mike4681 10-19-04, 09:12 PM Looks like you guys are doing a great job of keeping on top of it. I called the engineer at Fox last week, left a message, obviously I know why I never received a return call now.
Ridiculous.
WPTYdude is rocking tonight! VERONICA MARS is in HD!
And Mike, just go back one page and you'll see that Fox13 is apparently talking next year (after the Super Bowl, after all the fall premieres). So join the rest of us with DirecTV (I'm watching the ALCS on FoxNYC right now in HD, and they're trying to have FoxHD available in time for all the fall premieres in November--see related threads in HDTV Programming).

I've got DTV, how much does the NYC feed cost?
redram38 10-19-04, 09:38 PM No HD on WPTY again tonight. It was on for about 1/2 of My Wife and Kids then it went off again just after George Lopez started. I hope it is ok for LOST wed night. So far WPTY is hit and miss almost everynight. None on Sunday either. I have Time Warner Cable with SA8300HD DVR Box

Right now, just the baseball games on channel 88. But real soon now, all Fox programming (but just from NYC on channel 86; the west coast feed on channel 87 is for people in the west). According to threads in HDTV Programming, channels 86/87 are live on the satellite just awaiting a switch (but no one's saying what they're waiting on).
And to answer Mike about cost, read back in this thread and one person is being charged $2.25, others nothing additional. I think it has to do with what services you're already paying for (and/or what CSR you get when you call).
dirk1843 10-20-04, 08:54 AM Getting the games on 88 with no fee or request either.
mx6bfast 10-20-04, 09:24 AM I don't think you should be paying for the HD feed. Where do you get your locals from?
I was performing an auto tune on my sony lcd HDTV with my new antenna and it picked up WMC on channel 52.2. I tought WMC was 52.1. When I manually tune 52.1...I get NO signal !!
Is WMC-DT 52.1 or 52.2 and if it is 52.1, what am I missing here ??
Also my signal strength was about 68-72, is that acceptable ?? I would drop the signal to the 40's every once in a while !!

I can't answer your first question. But 72 is acceptable. I have noticed that anything above 50 will keep a picture from experiencing dropouts. 30 will get you half a picture but it will freeze
MX6
Is the signal drop and loss of picture a transmission problem from the tower and station or an interference problem from atmospheric conditions. When I watch other HD channels on cable, I have a much more stable picture.
mx6bfast 10-20-04, 10:23 AM I think your antenna isn't in the best position to get a stable signal. Either that or signal overload, but I doubt that. You might have to move your antenna ever so slightly. WMC is usually the hardest DT signal to get. But they seem to have increased their signal strength.
rcoxjd1 10-20-04, 12:28 PM Just wanted to clear up something. After I got home last night, I now have 88 and 89 for FoxHD. I also now have Fox East and West coast feeds. I think that is why I am being charged the $2.25.

I called three times tonight and they keep telling me I'm not eligible. They acknowledge that Memphis is an O&O but won't add the Fox HD channel to my programming services. So frustrating!!!!
dre,
WMC is on 52-2....so you are not missing anything.....at least not on that subject! ;)
I have always had significantly lower signal strength on WMC than everyone else (barring WHBQ of course) until recently. They are still a little down but much better.
For all,
If you are a DirecTV customer you should get the FOX HD feed for no additional charge and no waiver is needed. Now I am not sure if you have to subscribe to locals AND the HDTV package to get it free but I suspect so. I subscribe to Total Choice Premier with Locals and HDTV and my FOX HD was turned on automatically for the games (and I am assuming it will be for regular programming when it starts up as well.)
HDTV_Duffus 10-21-04, 08:03 AM I've spent at least 2 hours on the phone with DirecTV over the last week and I still don't have the Fox HD feed. The "final" answer last night is that the local Fox affiliate has "blacked out" sections of Memphis (zip code by zip code) per D*.
Could everyone that is receiving 88 or 89 please list waet zip you live in, please. I will then follow up with both Fox and D*.
Thanks.
Also list any special process you went thru to get the feed.....
38112 - no feed
mx6bfast 10-21-04, 09:10 AM Man I feel sorry for yall that are unable to get the national feed. These CSR's are idiots. Call the number on post 1019 for WHBQ and ask for the engineering department and see if that it true.
Have yall gotten to 2nd level? Ask to speak to a supervisor.
38135 - getting the feed.
Have locals and HD pack

Fox13 is 38111 and Borders your zip.
I guess they think your too close to Fox13 to get the feed :(

38018 -- getting it for no charge, but had to call to get it turned on.
mx6bfast 10-21-04, 10:06 AM What happened to WPTYdude? There are some questions here that it would be nice of him to answer.
Did anyone call WPTY to have the HD feed turned on last night? It didn't come on until about a minute into Lost. It prompted my wife to yell at the tv. I was reaching for the laptop to look up the number when it came on. Let's all hope that we will stop missing shows in HD.
rgswff3 10-21-04, 10:15 AM 38117 - no feed
I subscribe to both locals and the HD package.
FedExPilot 10-21-04, 10:50 AM 38018 - - Fox HD feed
I subscribe to DirecTv locals and HD package.
rcoxjd1 10-21-04, 11:24 AM 38125 -- Fox HD feed. I did have to call twice. First time told not eligible. Second time was told that I could get it. I got to second level both times. I know it is a pain but I would suggest you keep calling until you get someone that will agree with you.
ravma479 10-21-04, 02:09 PM It's pure crap. I live in 38117, which is 4.77 miles (driving distance) to WHBQ, and even with a HUGE antenna over 15 Feet Up, I CANNOT GET FOX.
Has anyone even SEEN their Digital? I mean, do we know for sure that it even exists? One of these days, I'll pop my HD in the car and park in front of the station to see if it's really there...
I don't even have cable or satellite, so there's not hope for me. :( Maybe someday soon...
HDTV_Duffus 10-21-04, 04:32 PM Thanks for the replys, I'm back to the phone!!!

rgswff3 10-21-04, 07:04 PM I'm getting it now. I emailed directv this morning and now the Fox_HD* line is showing in my account and I no longer get the x721 message on 88.
HDTV_Duffus 10-21-04, 08:43 PM I'm getting the HD feed as well. Thanks for everyone's reply.
Finally got to the HD desk and the problem was.....are you ready for this....no one had activated the channel!!!!

Thanks again.

mx6bfast 10-22-04, 01:01 PM I was getting low 70's signal strength last night on my HDTivo for WMC. But I was only getting the bottom half of the picture. Did anyone else experience this?
ravma479 10-22-04, 01:11 PM Yeah, I think that was NBC's fault. It happened ONLY on the national shows and commercials, the local ones were fine.
redram38 10-24-04, 09:06 PM Once again NO HD on Sunday night. Wish they would get their act together
:( :( :(
ravma479 10-24-04, 09:06 PM Sigh... Here we go again..No HD on WMC. I guess they never read that letter I sent them..

HvyXclr8r 10-25-04, 12:40 PM Hello! I am a new member. Just wanted to represent the HD Time Warner customer, since there don't seem to be any here.
I did experience the "black and green" signal problems last night during "Desp. Hswves." every time they tried to go HD with it. They eventually just left it alone.
I also called last Friday to formally request WMC be added to the TW HD lineup, but reading this forum has given me some insight as to why it hasn't been added yet.
I hope to offer good input when I can. Hopefully, I can be a part of this forum and contribute even though I don't have my own OTA tuner.
tscallions 10-25-04, 12:40 PM redram38, I read a few pages back that you had the SA8300HD. When did you get that box? I'm still using the SA8000HD and when I called customer service I was told Time Warner is out of all HD equipment and they won't have any until the first of the year. Now I know this guy was totally lying to me but I just roll with whatever lies customer service puts out there. I'm probably just going to go swap the box out, but I wanted to get your opinion on the 8300HD as compared to the 8000HD.
Thanks,
And I feel your pain on ABC. Last night I was watching Desperate Housewives and when they tried to cut the signal over to HD, the screen just kept flickering and then it looked like they gave up and just left it in SD.
mx6bfast 10-25-04, 02:44 PM Looks like WLMT just got bumped into 3rd place in Memphis behind WREG & WKNO by default. NBC & ABC are nose diving. I was watching some of ST and it looked really good Friday night. I'm really hoping that WPTYdude can get it setp for LOTR in HD. Maybe he's working on it now since he hasn't been back.
Has anyone else sent an email to WREG about the pq for the football games? I watched more SEC than NFL and it doesn't look good. The only time it does look as sharp as it did last season is during slo-mo replays. Guys speak up because I think I am the only one who is noticing this. No one else has said they have voiced their concern. If not we will never get to see the clarity of HD that we experienced last season on WREG. If you haven't sent him an email its ron.walter@wreg.com which is on the website.
HvyXclr8r 10-25-04, 04:12 PM tscallions,
I have the SA8300 (HD/DVR) and I got it about two months ago. When I first brought it home from the Bartlett Kroger office, it rebooted a lot and I couldn't get TNT HD at all. Also, ESPN HD came through with a lot of jerkiness and pixelation.
I placed a service call and a middle-aged tech (who seemed to be training a younger tech) that really knew his stuff traced it down to a couple of bad cable runs, which he replaced.
I was really glad, because a lesser skilled tech would have blamed it on my splitter/amp, which I paid a lot of money for and it just ticks me off when they try to use that excuse. He was quick to point out that it was a nice one (which was my first indication that he was not just another joe) and proceeded to methodically troubleshoot until the problem was fixed.
Kudos to TW, since now my box reboots so rarely that I can't remember the last time it did, and my HD ROCKS!
As far as whether TW currently has anymore 8300's, I don't know what to tell you. It is feasible that there was a run on them when ESPN HD came online.
tigerpaul2000 10-25-04, 09:44 PM I havve noticed the PQ on the football games, but I must say this weekend they looked pretty good to me. Not as much pixelation, at least for me.
tscallions 10-25-04, 10:28 PM I am going to take my SA8000HD to one of their locations tomorrow on my lunch break and see if they will swap it for me. I notice on the back of the unit they have the HDMI output but I only have DVI on my TV. I wonder if TWC provides a cable converter for that. Guess I shall find out tomorrow. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Sorry for the delay...WPTY's ABC HD decoder has been having problems...looks like I found the problem tonight. Can you believe a bad connector? 1.5Gbits/sec doesn't like bad grounds! WPTY's current ABC HD decoder is actually a loaner...hope to get our decoder back soon.
Still working on Lord of Rings...I think I can pull it off with gear we have. WB AC3 encodes so I should be able to pass AC3 through. I might be able to get 1 WB HD show this week if I get enough time to re-wire...

Boy did you. MNF was outstanding. Great picture quality. And I was watching it thinking "and last night, they couldn't even get a picture." Now I know why. Thanks! Keep it up.
redram38 10-26-04, 11:18 AM tscallions
I got the box at the winchester office about 3 weeks ago. I traded my reg HD box and that is the one they gave me. She told me they had several of them. If you want to swap yours just take it in and tell them yours is giving you trouble. It has worked fairly well. The HD recordings are all very good. ABout a week ago I did have a lip synch problem with some of ABC's but have had none since. Also the audio dropoff is bad on abc. It is never a problem on any other HD channels, just ABC. I am hoping we get NBC and FOX soon. It would have been nice to have FOX for the World Series. ALso I have a question for anyone here.
My TV set is HD ready. Is there a OTA I can use for HD locals or do I have to have a Box from either cable or DTV. Just wondering if they make an OTA for HD ready TV's and which is the best.
Thx
Ted
Hi all,
Is anyone else experiencing frequent audio dropouts on WPTY-DT (ABC)?
I've been receiving this station for quite a while with no problems at all, but it has not been watchable for the past few weeks. I've tried everything I can think of, including different antennas and locations but no help. It's very easy to get a steady signal strength of 80-90%, but I still get the audio issue. No other stations are affected.
This is driving me nuts :-). Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Ted Like you said you need another box for OTA. Either a DirecTV or an OTA only box. There is a current list as a sticky in the HDTV Hardware section. BTW, you will also need an antenna.

HvyXclr8r 10-26-04, 12:18 PM When I picked up my SA8300HDDVR from TW in Bartlett, I asked for a cable for the HDMI interface and was told they were not supplying them. They did give me a pretty high quality set of component video and stereo audio cables.
I have read up a little and found a few things out about the HDMI interface.
1. It is possible that TW is not supporting this connection.
2. It is possible that the HDMI is not even enabled (heard of this online)
3. It is possible that it is enabled and can be used, but only through accessing a "secret" service menu.
Whatever the case, the general consensus is that HDMI is only beneficial when connecting tv's that only take a DVI connector. Some purists like it because it keeps the signal digital all the way to the set.
My audio/video guy told me that some people actually think their tv shows a better picture when using good component cables.
BTW, the cable you need is an HDMI/DVI and is the common connector for this situation. It varies in price, but I would probably spend 80 to 100 dollars to make sure it was a good one. NEVER SKIMP ON CABLES.
I have a DVI input, but have not tried it yet. I do run 720P out from my 8300 and my TV converts it up to 1080i which I have found is the best overall picture (without visible variation lines when a solid black or solid bright scene is on).
Whatever works for you is the best way to go....

They do look good, but not near as good as they did last season. I guess I'm just spoiled. WREG used to never have any type of pixelation. If you saw tha Miami NFL game the first week, that's how it used to be. Unless other people speak up we will probably be stuck with what we have now.

Could this be the reason we are experiencing audio/video pauses? I noticed it last pretty bad during the 3rd quarter of the game on my Hughes E86. Not to mention I am getting it on SD programs also, not just HD.
If you can get LOTR in HD, well, words just can't describe. If you can get a WB show in HD, will it be one that is tape delayed or live? As wiggo pointed out, last nights game was superb. I think that the MNF games have passed WREG's pq.

What type of stb do you have? Dooes your picture freeze?
Also welcome to the new people in this forum.
tscallions 10-26-04, 02:33 PM Well that's not good news. I really don't want to spend $100.00 on a HDMI to DVI cable. I already spent $100.00 on a DVI cable for the SA8000HD that I have never used. I am considering sticking with the 8000 now.
tscallions 10-26-04, 03:43 PM Well, maybe there was some truth to them being out of DVR's. I just got back from the location on Poplar and there was a sign on the door that said "this location was currently out of all high definition digital video recorders" I'll check the Bartlett location this weekend.
mx6bfast, thanks for the response. I'm using the HD Tivo and don't have another STB to compare. I hadn't noticed the picture freezing until you mentioned it, but it does freeze for an instant when the audio drops out. The picture never breaks up like there is a reception problem, though. Sounding more and more like a problem with the encoding. I was hopeful that it might be fixed after WPTYdude's post, but the problem is still there tonight.

Yeah there's a known problem with ABC & HDTivo. Hopefully it will get figured out and fixed soon. Because it sure is annoying.
mx6bfast 10-27-04, 10:02 AM Has anyone noticed any charges in the signal strength at different times of the day with WMC? I have noticed that at night my signal strength drops on 2 of my stb's. Yesterday I tested me signal strength on all 4 stb's at the same time. Yesterday at 4 pm 3 were in the mid 70's and the last was at like 12 (don't use this one much). Then last night I checked after 9 pm and I was getting no more than 30 on 2 of them and the last had a signal strong enough to keep video.
Is anyone else experiencing anything like this?
HvyXclr8r 10-27-04, 10:04 AM Has anyone using TW HD experienced their STB rebooting when they try to watch WKNOHD for any length of time? Before my signal quality was improved by new cable runs (which eliminated my problems with some channels like TNTHD and ESPNHD) it used to lock up so fast that I couldn't even surf past the channel.
Due to improvements mentioned in previous posts and above, and the fact that I have had no problem surfing past WKNOHD lately, I bravely decided to actually watch a documentary last night. After about 10 minutes - BAM - rebooted again.
Any ideas? I sure wish we had an engineer from TWHD in this forum, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this.
tscallions 10-27-04, 10:18 AM I wish I could be of some help, but there hasn't been anything on that channel that has interested me. I'll be watching a DVD tonight, but I'll tune the box to WKNO-HD and see if it reboots while I am watching the DVD.
HvyXclr8r
I have TWC with a SA8000HD DVR box and have had no problems with any rebooting issues. You might have a problem with your box. I had a box once that wouldn't boot up at all and took it back and the new one worked just fine.
Also does anyone else have a lip sync problem on OTA WMC-DT. I was watching West Wing and Law and Order last night and noticed a much better signal but the sound was off ??
dre
Yup, WMC has had the lip sync problem as long as I've been watching HD.
tscallions 10-28-04, 01:13 PM I actually watched some of WKNO-HD last night and the box never froze up on me. Now I only watched for about five minutes and I know you were saying that it was locking up on you after watching for 10. I'll try and check out some more of their programing.
mx6bfast 10-29-04, 01:34 PM Just messing around at work today and found this link, http://www.satelliteexpo2005.com/ The expo is going to be here in Memphis this year. It might be something to go to.
btw....when I called D* and asked about waivers, apparently they put in waivers for the national feed, not HD. Because I got a card the other day that said that I was denied the national feed. So I guess I was automatically given the HD feed.

Maybe that will be WHBQ's "DT coming out party" :D
WPTYdude, you need to have a talk with your Sunday night master control guy. Last night, BOSTON LEGAL started in HD for the teaser and credits, but after the first commercial break came back in SD and stayed that way the rest of the hour.

ravma479 11-02-04, 08:10 PM WE HAVE HIGH DEFINITION WB! Sort of..
Ok, so it's a static image of a guy with a ketchup bottle, but its GILMORE GIRLS. IN HD. This rocks!! WPTYDude, you could always "accidentally" pass the WB feed through for Gilmore Girls. :) Just make sure Veronica Mars is on.
It's amazing how 1 single image can give so much hope... If Fox only had a test pattern..
ravma479 11-02-04, 08:59 PM And with minutes to spare til Veronica Mars, we had HD for the last little bit of Kevin Hill. THANKS WPTYDude!
Edit: Yep, HD for Mars.
I guess no one is watching tonight? :P
I haven't gotten a signal OTA for WMC in quite a while. Is anybody else having this problem? Just tried watching LAX and lo and behold nothing on 52-1! Everything else is coming in great. Also any update for us E* users about FOX upping their signal strength any time soon, maybe in time for the Super Bowl?
Gut
ravma479 11-03-04, 09:47 PM It's looking doubtful that E* will have Fox in time for the Superbowl. There is a big legal battle going on. D* should definately have it. The odds of having over the air here in Memphis before March or April 2005 is about 1000:1. They just don't seem to have the money, time, and/or need to do it. Although, it IS the Superbowl, so anything is possible.
My advice? Let's pack up our HD's and tailgate in WHBQ's parking lot! Anyone care to join me for an OC party tomorrow night?
As for WMC, as far as I know they are on. I can't get a solid picture by any means though, but I think that they are broadcasting.
tscallions 11-03-04, 09:52 PM What's up with the audio dropping in and out on ABC's Lost. Them seems to only happen with that show.
ravma479 11-03-04, 09:56 PM It might be the National Feed's fault, or it could be WPTY. Did you try calling the station? I recorded it but I havent watched it yet, so I don't know if it was happening on my box as well, Sorry.. :(
HDTV_Duffus 11-03-04, 10:21 PM Picking up WMC-DT fine in MidTown.
Dr. Dru 11-04-04, 12:05 AM First-timer here. I've got the HR10-250 D*-HD-Tivo hooked up to a Zenith SS antenna. I get CBS-DT, NBC-DT, and UPN-DT OTA w/o trouble here in midtown. No FOX, of course. I'm getting the ABC-DT OTA picture freeze & sound dropout problem as well, but I get the problem all the time, not just during HD broadcasts. The worst part about it is that I get the best reception (92-95 per the signal tester) from ABC.
Also, I called D* and they insist there is no FOX-HD available over the satellite. Was that just for the world series?
ravma479 11-04-04, 12:16 AM I don't have an HD-Tivo, so I can't help much there. From reading about it though, I feel very confident that it is something wrong with their signal. In any case, there IS Fox on D*, just not programming. It's only for Special Events, ie: Sports. (It may just be limited to the World Series and Super Bowl, however, I'm not sure.) There are some legal issues preventing D* from broadcasting all of the Fox HD lineup. There's no estimate on when this will change.
Dr Dru:
I think the HD-Tivo problem with our local ABC has to do with the digital station as a whole and not just HD content - don't have one yet to tell you for sure but logically it makes sense based on what the problem is speculated to be.
Fox-HD is not available on D* yet - it was just for the LCS and WS (see ravma479's post above.)
Welcome to AVS by the way! Great site for info and the Memphis thread has been humming along pretty good here lately.
Gut:
Have had WMC fine of late....even the audio sync problem SEEMS better - not sure if it really is though!
Dr. Dru 11-04-04, 10:22 AM I appreciate the information. Makes me wish I had read this fourm before I spent $45 at radioshack on attenuators and amplifiers that don't work.

Take 'em back. :D
Concerning ABC and the stuttering issue, at first everyone thought it was only limited to the HDTivo's. But I am also getting it on my E86's. IT was real bad in the first 10 minutes of Lost last night. So it appears to be something that is coming from ABC since we are not the only city experiencing it. The good news is the other 720p channel, FOX, is not doing the same thing. Of course we wouldn't know that. btw this also happens on SD programming.
ravma79,
When does Mars come on? If its in HD I might actually watch it. I've heard its a pretty good show.
I would join you for an OC party, but there is a sneak preview of Bridget Jones 2 tonight, and guess which one I have to go to.
Don't forget everyone that tonights Tigers game is in HD.

WPTYdude, you need to have a talk with your Sunday night master control guy. Last night, BOSTON LEGAL started in HD for the teaser and credits, but after the first commercial break came back in SD and stayed that way the rest of the hour.
Sunday nights seem to just be bad in Memphis. WMC is rarely in HD and WPTY is very slow in getting the HD feed going. This has only started happening recently.
Thanks for the info, I get all the other OTA-D channels in except WMC in Collierville. I have no idea why this started happening.
ravma479 11-04-04, 05:53 PM Veronica Mars is on Tuesdays at 8:00pm. Please watch, as it's a WONDERFUL show! :-p
I'm really, really tempted to find a place near the U of M that has HD, but alas, I'm too lazy.
I actually have a game with NBC on Sundays. It's 'Splice or Not?' Will the control room remember to splice after a break?! A splice pays 50:1. ;)
Villanman 11-04-04, 11:07 PM It's Bad enough that we don't have Fox in HD, but My Directv guide has Fox13 showing the Dallas/Bengals game over the Eagles/Steelers?!?
Wouldn't be a problem if I was at home that day with my Sunday Ticket but I won't be home.
ravma479 11-04-04, 11:19 PM I've more of less given up on our Fox affiliate. They are just, crappy. Their decisions never make any sense. I guess there's not much we can do about it though. This is why I hate the Satellite laws regarding national feeds. They just arent fair when the affiliate doesnt do their job.
I thought the Tigers game last night on ESPN-HD looked great. I was at the first half of the game and then watched the second half at home on HD. At the game the banners all have ESPN - HD on them and a lot of people around me in the stands were asking about HD and how good was the picture !!
It was nice to sit at home in my warm den and watch the HD feed ! It was just like being at the game !!!
Too bad they couldn't pull out a win....
mx6bfast 11-05-04, 01:26 PM I thought the game looked great last night too. I didn't realize just how blue the jerseys were.

Come thru WPTYDude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please
ravma479 11-05-04, 06:26 PM It shouldnt be hard at all, considering they dont even need to tape delay it. But, who knows? We haven't had Jack and Bobby, The Mountain or even Charmed (I know it's not HD, but digital still would look better.) It's up in the air I guess.
One thing is for sure: They definately DO have access to the feed, considering what happened on Tuesday. Hey, an hour of a static HD Gilmore Girls shot is better than nothing! ;)
Seriously, I watched that image for the whole hour, before finally calling about 10 minutes before Veronica Mars was on.

Dude, that's hardcore.
No WPTY or WLMT in DT tonight, but I am getting both channels 100%
OK, here's a strange one. "Searching for signal" and no audio or video on WPTY-DT tonight, so I thought I'd check the signal strenth. Both HD Tivo tuners hovering between 92 and 95%. Here's the really strange part. About every 3 seconds, Tuner 2 loses signal lock for about half a second. Signal strength stays the same. The pattern is very regular, like clockwork. Tuner 1 does not lose signal lock.
Dr. Dru 11-06-04, 11:42 PM I'm having the same problems with wpty-dt: signal meter runs 93-95, but picture constantly fuzzes out or freezes. That meant no Lost in HD tonight....
rjhseven 11-07-04, 10:31 AM I have a rather elaborate home wiring system with three high def TVs; I am having problems with OTA reception even though I have an antenna mounted on my roof with a rotor (to move the antenna). I am only able to get Wreg-DT over the air. I live in the heart of Cordova in a heavily wooded subdivision but I get Directv reception in the mid 90's and the dish is located very close to the OTA antenna.
I would like professional help in resolving this problem and getting the signal to all 3 HD tvs. Can anyone recommend anyone?
Thanks in advance for your help.
RedScare 11-07-04, 10:48 AM rjhseven,
Possibly the digital signal integrity is being compromised by a three way split between the antenna and each of your receviers. I live in Cordova as well, just off of chimneyrock and acheive exceptional reception. However, when I first started wiring I attempted to run my antenna in the attic through my DirecTV 4-way Multiswitch. The signal was horrible because I was splitting it so many ways. Try running a direct line from the antenna to one receiver in the house, and see what you can pick up on that one receiver.
rjhseven,
I'm in a heavily wooded part of Davis Plantation. I get all the OTA stations (except Fox of course) with relative ease. I've had the best results with the Channel Master 3021/4221 antenna, which you can order on the web. I don't find it necessary to rotate this antenna to get all the digital OTA stations.
Your message mentioned that your dish and the OTA antenna are close together. This provides no assurance that your OTA antenna is in the best (or even a good location). All the dish needs is a relatively small hole in the tree canopy to "see" the right spot in the sky. Digital OTA reception is much more finicky. One of the biggest problems is not lack of signal, but multipath which is receiving the signal from multiple directions. Multipath causes ghosting in analog TV. Moving the antenna a few feet in any direction may make all the difference. Unfortunately, there seems to be no reliable way to predict the best antenna location. Line of site to the transmitters is the best bet, but that can be impossible in a wooded area. See antennaweb.org to find the direction of the transmitters from your house.
My best suggestion would be to get the antenna I mentioned and try it. As RedScare suggested, stick to getting the signal to one receiver and preferably through a dedicated cable run at first. Once that is working, you can deal with splitting the signal to the different receivers.
OK, getting WPTY again tonight, but.....
Lip synch is waaayyyy off. And, there are random horizontal color streaks. And, there stills seems to be a problem with momentatry freezes.
I was sure hoping that since it was off the air that things would be fixed when it came back on.
ravma479 11-07-04, 08:02 PM WE HAVE LOTR IN HIGH DEF!!!
Thank you WPTYDude!!!
I wish it was OAR though.. but it's ok, that's the WB's doing. At least its Widescreen on the standard channel.

No kidding!
I turned it on at 6:58 and noticed DD5.1 so I knew it was gonna happen. Not to be a chooser but, why can't ABC pass thru DD5.1? I sure wouldn't mind not getting the NFL game in HD tomorrow night so we can get the last half of this.
ravma479 11-07-04, 08:17 PM Forget everything else, in my mind, ABC 24 has until Alias premiers in 2 months to get it together. :-p
mx6bfast 11-08-04, 11:19 AM Ok so what did everyone think of the NFL games on WREG this weekend? I thought they were good, but I still saw blocking around the jerseys. It was more evident in the SEC game. There was not as much blocking for the NFL games. But still, at this time last season there wasn't any blocking. Shoot even the first week of NFL games.
Does anyone else see this?
ravma479,
If you haven't watched Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal, give them both a try. I'm very sad that I can't watch them in HD given the audio/video freezes on ABC 24.
Does anyone know if Time Warner has ABC 24 in HD? If so, does it work with their recorder? I'd really consider getting cable again at least temprorarily to be able to watch ABC in HD without problems.
mx6bfast 11-08-04, 03:24 PM I didn't think about this, but what time is LOTR gonna be on tonight? 10? Will it still be in HD?
msd,
I had TWC but just went back to D*. The last time I tried to record Lost on 24 the 8300HD locked up about 4 times. It recorded it okay. Just when I tried to rewind or FF it woud lock up and I had to reboot the DVR.
I notice something strange the other night with 24's OTA signal. On my D* HD-Tivo when looking at the signal strength of 24-1 the 2nd OTA tuner kept on dropping out for a second every few seconds. The 1st tuner stayed solid.
msd:
I have TWC with a DVR HD box and channel 24 works just fine. I record many HD as well as SD programs with no problems.
I have both HD tiers....You get local HD 3 & 24, then you get all the INHD's, movie's in demand HD, ESPN HD and a few other HD channels with some movies and stuff on them.
I also seem to have fewer reception problems with TWC than I hear our friends talking about on this forum here in Memphis for channel 3 and 24. The only problem is you can't get Channel 5 or 13 or 30 yet.
ravma479 11-08-04, 04:48 PM I watch pretty much everything on TV. :) I have Housewives and Boston recorded but haven't gotten around to watching them yet. I usually watch Crossing Jordan (1/2 in HD ;)). I really need some kind of Dish.
I'm really, REALLY upset that I had to watch Arrested Development in SD last night. The dvds looked so freakin beautiful, I cannot imagine the True HD feed.
MarkDu and dre,
Thanks for the info. Can you recall approximate monthly cost for the HD tiers and DVR? Does the DVR box have component video and S-sideo outs?
BTW, I noticed the same thing with 24s OTA signal.
Thanks!

You still would've seen it in SD last night. No telling when the HD feed will be up on D*, and will be even longer until WHBQ moves its feed to the new tower.
ravma479 11-08-04, 10:56 PM Lol, you don't have to tell me that. :) I've heard Spring 2005 is their target locally.
ravma479 11-08-04, 11:04 PM HE DID IT! WPTYDude has given us TAPE DELAYED HD WB!
We have Part 2 of LOTR in HD. Man, I cannot wait for Gilmore Girls tomorrow. And Smallville... and.... etc....
Thanks again WPTYDude!
mx6bfast 11-08-04, 11:07 PM To my surprise, it was also on at 7. Since I missed the first 30 minutes of it I'm gonna go re-tivo it.
ravma479 11-08-04, 11:27 PM Really? They aired that OVER UPN shows? I love the WB, but I've gotta have my Veronica Mars and Enterprise. :)
Couple other notes, ABC and UPN are STILL having lip sync problems. (ABC is TERRIBLE, UPN isn't as bad.)
Also, There is a CLEAR difference in quality on even the PROMOS on the WB.
ravma479 11-09-04, 05:36 PM Veronica Mars has been picked up for a full season! :D I'm so, so happy. UPN's FINALLY on the ball, Good shows and HD. If anyone hasn't seen this, it's on at 8 tonight on UPN.
redmikeu2 11-11-04, 10:15 AM I noticed last night that upn is in the hd tier on time warner. Also did anyone have problems with audio while watching LOST on ABC? I watched it around 7:10 and there was no audio.
tscallions 11-11-04, 01:11 PM I recorded LOST last night and when I played it the audio dropped out after about five minutes into the show and didn't come back on until about 40 minutes into the show. Wasn't very happy about this.

Great. I tivo'd the HD feed so I know what I have to look forward too.
Oh well, I guess I'll just bring down the SD Tivo.
mx6bast,
Are you *ever* able to watch an HD Tivo'd show from ABC? If I'm lucky I can get 5-10 minutes before the audio dropouts make it a lost cause.
If this is something on my end, I'd sure like to know so I can try to fix it. From earlier posts, I was under the impression that this is a widespread problem with WPTY and/or ABC and some receivers including the HD Tivo. I never used to have problems with WPTY / ABC using other receivers. I don't _think_ I had problems with ABC when I first got the HD Tivo.
Thanks!
It's got to be something to do with WPTY. I tried watching Lost on my HD-Tivo last night and had the usual problem of the stutters. So I hooked up my Hughes E-86. It didn't have the stutters but the audio was dropping in and out on it. I, also, saw the horizonal lines popping up on it like it does on the HD-Tivo.
Needless to say, I've setup my Season Pass for WPTY SD channel until they get this fixed.

Sometimes, vary rarely, almost never. :D That's why we watch WPTY live all the time. We have the HDTivo & one E86 in the living room.
I also get the pausing issues on my E86's on WPTY. Whatever it is it's something coming from ABC since we are not the only city experiencing this.

That's what the SD Tivo upstairs is for. I haven't seen the vertical lines on my 86's.
redmikeu2:
What is the channel on TWC for UPN HD. I didn't see it last night as I was surfing the 800 level channels ???
msd:
I pay about $90 per month for digital cable including both tiers of HD digital, 2 digital boxes, DVR box and service monthly fee (no premium movie channels)
mx6bfast,
Thanks for the confirmation on the ABC issue. I wish now that I had not sold my HD recorder PC in favor of the HD Tivo. Perhaps it would not have been affected by the problem. I wonder who I can write at ABC ;-).
dre,
Thanks for the TWC pricing info. I called them today to ask about HD DVRs. The lady I spoke with said they were hoping to have some at the beginning of the year. Sounds like life is not trouble free on ABC HD with cable, either though.
redmikeu2 11-12-04, 10:46 AM Dre,
I will check tonight when I get home on the UPN channel, but it was showing up for me between ABC and TNT in the 800's. I just have basic High def with time warner and UPN was showing up last night but all they were airing was wrestling and that was not HD.
Mike
redmikeu2:
I found channel 30HD on TWC........809 !!
Thanks
msd:
I called TWC every Tuesday am at 8:00 to see if they had received more HD DVR boxes. I got lucky and they had one after just two weeks of waiting in September. I think it's going to get harder to get one after the holidays due to increased sales of HDTVs for Christmas.
dre,
Thanks - I'll check back with TWC periodically and see if I can get lucky too.
Hopefully ABC / WPTY will get straightened out soon and eliminate the need.
Dr. Dru 11-13-04, 10:17 PM I still don't understand the problem with WPTY-DT. I Tivo'd "Saving Private Ryan" and there were very few picture freeze/audio drop-outs -- almost none in the first half. However, Lost was essentially unwatchable because of the frequent defects. They seem to have the ability to transmit without those defects, why not all the time, or at least during HD programming?
memphistrumpet 11-14-04, 08:56 PM So has anyone actually seen any HD programing on UPN-HD from TW?
redmikeu2 11-15-04, 04:45 PM I caught a little of Enterprise ON TW and the picture was not that impressive. I don't think that abc/upn is upconverting it but it didn't seem as sharp as some of the other programs I have seen, but it was in widescreen....maybe the ABC engineer would know.
Mike
Not on TW, but I did watch Enterprise from 10/29 on the HD Tivo and it looked great. There were only a couple of very minor audio glitches. One cheer for WPTYDude. (I'll give out the other two cheers when I can get through Boston Legal and Desperate Housewives on WPTY-DT without problems.)
ravma479 11-15-04, 06:42 PM What I do not understand is how we can have Lord of the Rings in High Definition, but we can't have Gilmore Girls, Smallville, or Jack and Bobby in HD. Yes, it's tape delayed, but he did it with LOTR, so it IS possible. I mean, at the very least, we should have SUNDAYS in HD / Higher Quality SD (For Charmed). There's no taping involved, it's a straight passthrough. What's going on?! :(
Hey guys, I'm getting my HDTV delivered today. I'm in East Memphis near Clark Tower. Which indoor antenna would you guys recommend that I use to get over the air broadcasts? I have DTV and don't want to shell out money for the receiver and the HD package quite yet. Thanks in advance.
fsquid:
I live very near where you are. I have the indoor Zenith Silver antenna. It does an OK job. I don't think there is any substitute for a good high outdoor antenna though. Some channels have good reception, others do not. From listening to the other guys on this forum, I think some of the problems are also transmission problems from the local stations. I mostly use TWC HD and receive channel 3,24,10,30....plus the digital tier channels like ESPN etc. Hopefully things will improve with time.. I sure it will !!!
By the way, have you had any luck getting Fox over the air? I've heard that they are lagging behind big time.
tigerpaul2000 11-19-04, 09:17 PM fsquid, it's me from MT.org. Anyway, I live in Marion, AR and have the silver sensor in my attic and I get everything except Fox and there aren't many that can get it. All strong signal strengths, 80-90% on all the channels. Plus you can get it for about $20 (I think that's how much I paid), you'll look at it and say there is no way it works that well, but it does for me. Take Care, GO TIGERS!!!
good to see you over here. I got the silver sensor and it works great. I get everything but Fox and NBC a tad fuzzy. ABC and CBS look absolutly incredible. I'll have the Iron bowl on the TV in HD while the Tigers are on my radio.

No
sorry for all the newbie questions, but why is Fox and NBC so hard to get HD signals for?? Is it the stations? THANKS
Also, I'm going to have to send in a donation to WKNO, I love some of those shows in HD. I watched something about Austria last night and it was beautiful.
fsquid,
I have good signal strength on all the other stations, but I can't even tell that Fox is on the air. I think that is prevalent as Fox is transmitting at very low power. I wouldn't waste a lot of time or aggravation trying to receive it until they get serious with their transmitter. NBC on the other hand, should be fine. You may need to try using a different antenna or putting it in a different location. A few feet or a few degrees of rotation can make a huge difference.
thanks for the quick reply mate. I can get the signal, but the picture is choppy. I'll fiddle more with it on Tuesday.
rcoxjd1 11-22-04, 03:31 PM I know this question has been asked but I don't think anyone responded. If you actually get a Fox high def. signal let me know what part of town you are located in and how it looks. Thanks.

from what I've heard, people in the East Buntyn neighborhoods can't even get the Fox HD signals and I think their transmitter is on top of their station.
tigerpaul2000 11-22-04, 08:10 PM Anyone having problems with WPTY and WLMT? I haven't been able to get a lock on those two for a while. I have re-adjusted my antenna and still no luck. 24 won't lock and 30 I can't even get a signal. Everything else, WREG, WMC, WKNO, WPXX all come in fine.

I haven't had a problem with WPTY.
btw, 5, 24 & 30 all broadcast from the same tower if that helps.
tigerpaul2000 11-23-04, 11:15 PM Well I should have posted last night. MNF came in fine at 89% but 30 wouldn't give me a signal and 5 was coming in. Oh well!! Haven't tried it tonight.
mx6bfast 11-24-04, 07:18 AM That's strange. 30 is usually one of the strongest stations.

mx6bfast 11-24-04, 10:34 AM Great. Did you figure out what the problem was?
mx6bfast 11-27-04, 04:15 PM So is anyone watching the game on CBS right now? I am watching it OTA. Yet I am still seeing alot of pixelation.
The bottom part of my 42" tv screen is about 6 feet off the ground. I have tested it from 9, 18, and 27 feet. I have a hard time seeing pixelation at 27 feet but it is very noticable at the other distances. It is mainly in the UGA jerseys when there is any movement.
I have emailed the person from WREG and he said they are working on it but nothing is happening on their end. I feel that I am the only one who sees this. Does anyone else see this? If so have you sent an email to ron.walter@wreg.com? Please speak up because I think I am the only one who has mentioned this to him. I have seen only 1 other post from someone other than me about this.
Are yall happy with this low bit stream they are feeding us? Do yall not want to see a game in real HD from WREG?
If you are new to this thread since last season you just don't know what you are missing.
ravma479 11-27-04, 04:52 PM I am seeing a TON of pixelation.
...Oh wait, That's rain.. ;)
Seriously though, whenever there is a ton of action on screen, it's clearly noticeable. They need to do SOMETHING.
I guess I'm just a newbie at this, I thought the game yesterday looked great. I will say it wasn't as nice as the Iron Bowl last week.

The 2nd game today will be in Hd. Although the NFL games have looked better, pay attention to the people's jerseys when they move. Far away shots its harder to see, but up close on players when they are walking, it is very easy to see.
Check it out from different ranges.
Although it did look great, when there was very little movement or the shot was from far away, WREG used to send games in which there was NO pixelation and the picture was even crisper than it is now.
Is Shrek messing up to anyone? At first it was in HD, and then when it came back from a commerical it was in 4:3, then back to HD, now back to 4:3.
mx6bfast 11-28-04, 08:01 PM Yeah I see it too. I almost feel like calling, but I'll be watching Cold Case in 30 minutes.
Oh well, at least I'm actually getting NBC now.
ravma479 11-29-04, 12:56 PM fsquid: Welcome to Sundays on WMC. :P For some reason, they are just incapable of splicing the feed back to HD whenever they return from a commercial. Don't ask me why, I even tried emailing the station, but they never returned my email. :( Usually, it takes a phone call to get them to turn the HD back on. One night, they went almost the WHOLE night without the HD on.
BTW, anyone see that blip about UPN HD in the Commercial Appeal? It's bull! They don't air the WB in HD. Heck, they had a LIVE FEED last night, and yet when I turned it on, The Mountain was in 4:3 letterboxed. :(

What's sad is since WMC doesn't multicast the picture looks beautiful. I didn't see any pixelation when the HD feed was going when the dragon was breathing fire. Snap back to reality after the commercial break.

It was in Thursday's paper.

I have subscribed to this thread since dre started it in 2002, the above is one of dirk's first posts, but you know what, not much has really changed here in memphis, I used to try OTA DTV but for the same reasons you still are talking about I had TWC install an HD DVR, not for local channels, but to get additional HD programming.
I've given up on the memphis stations, only WPTY and WREG seem to do a decent job, WMC and WHBQ can't get their acts together enough for TWC to carry(imagine all the cable subscribers complaining about dropouts and lip sync issues).
Now I watch Law and Order on SD upconverted to 720P with sidebars and I don't have to reboot my STB after a commercial to have HD with correct audio.
Most memphis stations only broadcast HD because of FCC mandates and even WHBQ with only a 1 1/2 mile diameter viewing area is complying (sic).
I've come to the conclusion that local channels for the most part are not willing to invest the $$$$$s in state of the art HD transmiters and cameras until their FCC judgement day.
This thread is great, and I've enjoyed the comfort of the misery loves company and it's not my equipment's fault.
sorry bout the rant John
ravma479 11-30-04, 07:52 PM Hey, don't bail on us now! :)
In all seriousness, THIS is why laws preventing Network National Feeds on satellite are WRONG. When the affiliates have a monopoly on a market, and are UNABLE to successfully serve that market, someone else should be able to come in and do a better job. It would push them to do better locally.
I'm pissed that I cannot get 24 and Arrested Development in HD, Alias and Lost without 5.1 is loosing a lot, and frankly, I'm just annoyed in general with all the stations. With WREG's low PQ, WMC's Sunday night 'Will-they/Won't-they' games, WHBQ's (insert name calling here), WPTY's lack of 5.1, and WLMT's lack of High-Def WB, even when there is a LIVE FEED, I've had it too.
And people wonder why only 9% of households have HD..... :-/

No. I noticed it this morning. Luckily for me there is nothing on CBS that I watch on Tuesdays.
John Raymond 11-30-04, 08:11 PM Not giving up, Ive just decided (some time ago) that nothing is going to change, Boston Legal was in SD on TWC 807 on Sunday nite, I'm sure because of the local feed......so what, I should have watched a DVD!

The first couple of minutes was in HD OTA. So was Desperate Housewives. Was that in HD for you?
John Raymond 11-30-04, 08:53 PM Didn't watch desperate hw
John Raymond 11-30-04, 08:57 PM Take that back Gigi watched DH while I was doing something else but didn't notice whether it was HD or not
ravma479 11-30-04, 09:33 PM WREG's feed is back online on 3-1.

Looks like they were asleep at the wheel at WLMT. Enterprise appears to be in SD. I wish I had noticed soon enough to call. It is disappointing because they seem to have been doing a good job with Enterprise in HD for the past couple of weeks.
OK, looks like they turned on HD for Enterprise about 10 minutes in. Better late than never :-)
mx6bfast 12-05-04, 12:04 PM Every now and then I get the stuttering on 24-1 on my E86's that I do on the HDTivo, but not near as bad. But since last night it has been equally as unwatchable. Is anyone else seeing this in non-HDTivo recievers.
btw....the SEC game last night looked horrid. I guess WREG doesn't care what they are sending us.
I watched the SEC game in Nashville on Comcast HD cable and it looked bad there, too. Maybe it was the network source instead of WREG?
I sure wish 24 and ABC would get the stuttering issue fixed. There was a time that I was watching more ABC programming just because it was in HD. Now I try to avoid it.
glad to see that I wasn't the only one cussing at ABC in the last week. The Monday Night Football game last week was horid.
I watched the SEC game on TWC 803 and I thought it looked great !!
I sure read ya'lls comments about picture quality and wonder whats going on ??? I have very little problems with TWC HD, as long as the local channels feed the HD to them.
mx6bfast 12-06-04, 02:41 PM Could it be that the feed going to TW is better than the one they are sending OTA?
mx6bfast,
I have notice the same thing on ABC with my E-86 also.
Yesterday I was checking the signal strength on my HR-Tivo and for WPTY it showed channel 25-2. So, I went to channel 25-2 and it was the same picture that was being shown on 24-1. Is this the same channel or is WPTY multicasing and why?

I noticed that I was gettin 100% from 25 yesterday during the day and I had a blank screen on 24-1. Did you get 24-1 at the same time 25-2 was showing up?

I think that for some reason WPTY is using the -2 subchannel (actually 25-2) instead of the more widely used convention of the -1 subchannel.
You can tune to WPTY-DT from either the 24-1,25-1, or 25-2 inputs on D* boxes..........I am under the impression that this is due to conflicting data between what is coming down off the D* birds and what is in the PSIP stream from the broadcasters themselves.

I tried 24-2 and 25-2 and I recieved channel not available.
My understanding is that the signal itself only comes out on one channel (in this case 25-2.) Using data that is imbedded in the signal (PSIP) your receiver then remaps the channel to one normally associated with the station (24-1 in this case.) That might explain why you could tune in the channel using both (however the receiver should remap from 25-2 to 24-1 when you use 25-2 and therefore display 24-1.)
Of course all of this is not pertinent if you have that data turned off in your receiver (as I did at first.) The receiver will then leave the incoming digital feed on whatever channel it comes in on. Your receiver also might not recognize the data (as mine does not with 52-2) and leave it alone as well.
There is also the final option of the channel not having a strong enough signal to reach beyond a 4 block area leaving you hoping for a DirecTV HD feed before Feb 20!!!!! C'mom Fox 13....daddy needs 4 tires and some gas! :)

I had the same thing. No picture on 24-1 but a signal strength in the low 80 (normal for me). I think at that time when I did the signal test it showed WPTY 24-1 on the testing screen.
It was later on in the day during the rain when I notice the test showed 25-2. That's when I could tune in 24-1 and 25-2. I didn't think to try 25-1.
I'll try to tune in 25-2 again tonight when I get home and see if I can still get it. Since you are not able to get 25-2 I'm curious to if I still can.

Could this be related to the "stutter" we're getting on 24-1? Sure wish they would hurry up and get this fixed. I would love to watch LOST in HD!

Do you know if I can do that on an E86? If so how?
I'm curious, at what time of the day is everyone getting 25-2?
Last night about 9:45pm I was able to get 24-1, 25-1 and 25-2 on my HD-Tivo. There was no signal on 24-2.
I notice there wasn't any stuttering so I watched the rest of NYPD Blue. Didn't get one stutter or audio dropout during that 15 minutes. Did they get it fixed or was this just a fluke? I hope it's fixed because I sure would like to watch Lost in HD tonight.
mx6,
In looking at your owners manual the only reference I could find was one to "actual" and "virtual" channels. However, I did not see any reference on how to select one or the other....only that the virtual channel info is contained in data sent by the station (confirming what I had thought was how it worked.)
Mark,
Very encouraged to here your results last night....haven't got the HD-Tivo yet and that is part of the reason.....can't have those Desperate Housewives stuttering!
HDTV_Duffus 12-08-04, 08:06 PM I also had perfect reception (i.e. no freezing or stuttering) on NYPD for ~15-20 mins last night. SO, I got brave and hit the record button, when the recording begins everything is perfect. I replay some of the show at the next commercial, again perfect playback. The wife is VERY HAPPY since this is her favorite show....Then the stuttering and freezing begins. Oh well, it's saved from the D* channel.
mx6bfast 12-08-04, 09:22 PM I was getting 25-2 on the HDTivo, but not the E86. I noticed much less freezing while watching on that channel. But I didn't check 24-1
I have a RCA DTC100 HD-tuner built into my TV. It has 2 antenna inputs. When I did a channel scan 2 1/2 weeks ago 24-1 came up on one antenna and 25-2 came up on the other. All other channels were the same. Go figure.
If the ABC stutters are fixed, guys, let me know. It has an impact on how soon I shell out the bux for an HD Tivo. (I have the Hughes HTL-HD now, and don't get the stutters.)
I just wish those damn HD Tivos would come down in price!
AMEN!
But may still have to get one anyway! ;)

Go to solidsignal.com... they are having a sale the the HD-Tivos right now. you have to "Add to cart" to see the price".
Jerry
fawkes & Cheep,
Nope, not fixed. The stutters were back the next day. Cheep, I'm glad you don't get the stutters with the HTL-HD. But it does make me wonder what's so different between it and the E-86 and HD-Tivo.
mx6bfast,
I'm going to have to check out 25-1 or 25-2 to see if the stutters are there. I didn't stay on those long enough to see if the stutters are there too.
Mark,
Sorry to hear that....had my hopes up for a bit!
I suspect 25-2 will have it as well since 24-1 is only 25-2 remapped for the user's benefit.
Jerry,
Best price I've seen so far....that plus some programming credit would make it pretty tolerable.

There was some stuttering on 25-2 when watching Lost Wed night, but not as much. I didn't check 24-1.
If you decide that you do want to get an HDTivo, the BB at Wolfchase has a steady supply of 4. Either no one is buying them or else they have more in the back.
hdtvluvr 12-10-04, 08:18 PM For the HD Tivo check out ********************* Theirs is a lot less than BB and they will give you a free 5 year warranty.

John Raymond 12-12-04, 10:31 AM Anybody know if the DVI is active on the TWC SA8000HD DVR? I know the hd dig boxes are active.
hdtvluvr 12-15-04, 09:32 PM OK, I finally got my HD Tivo set up this past weekend and recorded CSi: Miami Monday night. I just sat down to watch it and I have all of the surround sound but no center channel sound during the show. In other words, there isn't any main dialog. Did anyone else have this problem?
I switched over to NCIS (recorded on Tuesday) and it is perfect so I don't think it's anything wrong with my equipment.

It's not your equipment. Around the 25 minute mark the sound will kick in correctly. CSI:Miami was broadcast in DD5.1 for the first time Monday night and WREG didn't change it until around that time. I was the 2nd person who called about it and the guy said he just fixed it.
I had a source at WMC inform me that Channel 5 HD could be on TWC HD within the next three weeks. I hope the info is correct ??
mx6bfast 12-20-04, 09:42 AM Has anyone else noticed the grey bars on the side on WLMT and WPTY? do you like them? I think that they stand out too much.
bgoering 12-20-04, 07:15 PM dre - on my sony connected to TWC regular cable (non-digital) I get the following:
70.1 UPN - HD
70.2 NBC - HD
94.8 CBS - HD
regards...Bill
hdtvluvr 12-21-04, 07:58 AM Channels 88 and 89 (FOX) are back. I can get 88 but 89 says to call to subscribe.
jawilljr 12-21-04, 08:00 AM Just to let everybody that FOX HD is live on DirecTV (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=484915). I am receiveing it on channel 88. Which of course means I will be able to watch the Superbowl in HD.:D
Jerry
Damon Hill 12-21-04, 09:06 AM Ok you guys, a couple of questions. I was about to post up that I was getting worried that my "HIGH DEF SUPERBOWL PARTY" ,that I have been talking up to all my friends, was going to be a bust because of Fox HD and D* dragging their feet.
Now I'm getting excited.
How do I go about getting the FoxHD channels if I go home and look and they do not show up? What number should I call for D* and what should I ask?
Is it possible to pay for east and west coast feeds of HD channels when you normally would be unable to get them?

Just call D* and tell them that you are in an O&O and they should be turned on. If they refuse, keep going up the chain until someone turns them on.

Not sure about that. You might still have to get waivers. I don't know why you would want to do that. Do you really want to pay an extra $2.50 for 1 HD channel? I guess you must not have an HDTivo.
"dre - on my sony connected to TWC regular cable (non-digital) I get the following:

Bill:
Do you have this input into a HDTV via coax with non-digital regular TWC cable.......how does that work ???
Jerry
mx6bfast 12-21-04, 02:46 PM So now that FOX HD is live on D*, how many of you will be changing your viewing habits to the NY feed? I know I will. All of my season passes are changing tonight. I have already changed my "quick channels" on my E86's from 13 to 88.
Damon Hill 12-21-04, 05:09 PM well I got home and showed channels 88 and 89 but it had the message to call to order.
I called D* and they told me that the channels are not available yet and that there are still negotiations going on with Fox and D* and that no one has the channels yet. I told them that I knew people WERE receiving the channels and that I should be as well, but he refused.
I guess I'll have to call again. How is it that some of you just automatically get the channel and others dont? Why should it be any different between two people in the same area?
