whotony 01-14-06, 07:23 PM Getting back to why we post here. . .
Has anyone on Comcast (South Jersey) noticed INHD and INHD2 PQ is down, pixellation and fast motion problems? I just saw the show on INHD2 about amusement parks and the PQ was terrible, last nights UFC (repeat) was unwatchable. Has PQ over Comcast come down in general over the last few days? Any thoughts or observations?
i noticed that last night.
there was a bathing suit show on and it looked bad.
looked alot like the way Leno has been looking for awhile.

I generally don't watch either of the INHD's much, but I did happen to catch Sinatra's Ocean's Eleven this afternoon. PQ was fine, not great but certainly not terrible or unwatchable. As for overall PQ from Comcast here in So. Jersey, I'm pretty pleased. I've been watching a lot of Discovery HD Theatre lately and the PQ has been consistently great. NBC10 is the only channel I would call below average PQ-wise, but since it is the same for me OTA, I don't blame Comcast.
I don't know if it is a Comcast isssue or not. CBS and the football game looked good last night, but INHD had an NBA game that was terrible. Must be the INHD feed.
Zack Allen 01-15-06, 10:20 PM I was wondering why some things like the 6ers in hd take up the full screen but on other things that are listed as hd program still have letter boxes around them
Only certain programs are broadcast in HD on Comcast Sportsnet - home Phillies, Flyers and 76'rs and some Phantoms games. They used to stretch the picture when broadcasting non-HD material. Stretched pictures look very bad lmho (especially in the case of a game broadcast), and I think that others agree with that - Comcast stopped the stretch and put up the sidebars instead. I know that I wrote to them more than once asking them to please end the stretch.
ESPN-HD also puts up sidebars when not broadcasting HD stuff.
As to why they can't just leave the sides blank, as ABC and NBC do when broadcasting non-HD stuff on their digital channels, I guess it's because having blank areas in the same place constantly is bad for some TV sets (CRT's and Plasmas - I am not sure about LCD's), and I guess they think that the bars don't cause burn, while blank areas do.
Anyway, can't the people who have the sets that burn stretch their own pictures if they want to?
I prefer that they just leave the sides blank (unless they want to put in Olympic divers or other entertaining stuff that would fit in the sidebars, as Conan suggested when his show first went HD :) ), but I prefer the bars to any stretching of the picture. I guess the channels that put up the bars don't want to scare away people who have bought sets that can burn.

There was definately something wrong with that Pacers/Bulls game.
Good, it wasn't just my cable! I didn't watch the game, but noticed flipping through the PQ was HORRIBLE.
Has anyone, who got a DVR from Comcast lately, specifically requested the 3412?
If so, did you get it?
Copy of my email to Comcast regarding UniversalHD and ESPN2:
Due to Comcast lack of desire to add any additional HD channels in the coming year I am considering a switch to satellite. The Olympics are coming and UniversalHD will be the home for HD hockey (unavailable to Comcast subs). ESPN2 will have many of the NCAA basketball games in March (unavailable to Comcast subs). The only reason that I have not switched yet is Flyer hockey in HD. Please advise as to what the minimum package would be that still contains CSNHD. I resent that since I am a fan of a sports team it limits my choices in the marketplace when it comes to my TV service. Comcast should make CSNHD available to satellite and/or increase their HD content to compete with satellite. Hopefully in a year I will have another choice, FIOS TV from Verizon. Perhaps the competition will push Comcast. The real shame is that I admire the Robert's for what they do in the business world and in their community I just think they are losing touch with their once loyal cable subs and not
providing the world class service they espouse.
Copy of the reply, minutes later:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding your interest in our HDTV programming. We appreciate knowing what appeal to our customers, and we use that information whenever we make changes to our line-up.
Please note that while we may not offer Universal HD, we will be broadcasting the Olympics in High Definition not only on CBS High def but on our INHD channels.
Our goal is to provide a wide choice of quality cable networks and local broadcast channels reflecting the diverse programming interests of our customers. In addition to requests from customers, the following factors play a part in our decision making process:
-FCC regulations, such as requirements to carry all local broadcast channels.
-Requirement by local broadcasters to carry their affiliated cable networks.
-The number of access channels required by local government.
-Customer satisfaction with networks carried in other systems.
-Customer satisfaction with similar networks.
-Importance of the network to our diverse community.
-Level of interest across a percentage of our customer base.
-We look at each network's national and localized ratings to see the level of viewership for different times of the day.
-Per-subscriber programming fees charged by the network versus the value added to the line-up.
Please also keep in mind that High Definition is not as of yet a standard for every channel, and only a handful of the channels we carry have a High Definition counterpart. As we wish to offer as many of these channels as possible, High Definition channels do take up a substantial amount of bandwidth, more so than our standard channels. We are currently working on increasing our signal bandwidth, which will in turn create more opportunities for High Definition.
When we are faced with programming decisions, input from our customers is extremely important. While at this time I cannot say that more HDTV channels will be added to our line-up, I can assure you that your request will be forwarded to and given every consideration by our Marketing Team.
We value your opinion tremendously. Thank you for making this suggestion and for being a Comcast customer.
If you have any additional questions, please call our customer service department or contact us online. Our customer service department can be reached at 1-888-COMCAST or 856-354-1660. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your convenience.
Thank you for choosing Comcast.
My thought. . .Huh?
CBS high def? What will be shown on INHD? Any thoughts?
newsman 01-16-06, 09:45 PM ^^^ Confusing since NBC is showing the Olympics and NOT CBS. So that information is incorrect. Another thing that is worriesome about that reply. INHD does NOT have rights to any of the Olympics as far as I know. The only channels that are showing anything Olympic related are: NBC local stations (including HD), USA Network, Universal HD, CNBC, and MSNBC. I don't know how INHD (what is this channel you speak of, I don't know if I get it on Dish) has rights to any of the Olympics.
I believe INHD is only on Comcast cable. I do not have dish, as of yet.
does anyone remember about 2 years ago with the summer olympics, it was on nbc hd 24/7 for the entire time? I dont think they had any other programming on the channel. I want them to add espn2 asap.
mikeewing 01-17-06, 07:43 AM Is it possible that Comcast means they will use the INHD channels to broadcast the Olympics the same way YES-HD and MSG-HD are broadcast?
I am further south than you Mike, in Marlton. We do not get MSG or YES. What do they do there with the INHD channel, simulcast the HD version of the game?
mikeewing 01-17-06, 08:34 AM I am further south than you Mike, in Marlton. We do not get MSG or YES. What do they do there with the INHD channel, simulcast the HD version of the game?
Exactly.
The picture looks great. However the guide usually does not reflect the programming for YES or MSG when simulcast on INHD.
That is a bunch of crap, filled with inaccuracies. CBS has nothing to do with the olympics. INHD simucasting? I think something would have been announced in the HDTV Programming thread.
ESPN has nothing to do with any of the men's ncaa tournament in March. They only do the men's NIT and the Women's NCAA tourney.
I really really wish we had ESPN2HD during college bball season, Comcast is so behind the ball it's not even funny.
They can use the channel that has INHD, by pre-empting the INHD programming, and temporarily making it a 'Special Events' channel; they have done this in the past.
I got my 3412 over a month ago in Brookhaven. I didn't specifically ask for it, but rahter asked for the new box with HDMI output.
newsposter 01-17-06, 07:06 PM I came across this wonderful document. Is a list of TV stations, their current digital and analog channels and the channel they have chosen to use for their digital broadcast when analog is turned off.
http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-05-2649A2.pdf
nbc 10 isn't there but you have to assume they go back to 10 right? I'll be glad wb going to 17 but it stinks I have to wait 3 years.
mikeewing 01-17-06, 08:09 PM They can use the channel that has INHD, by pre-empting the INHD programming, and temporarily making it a 'Special Events' channel; they have done this in the past.
Yes, that is what I was referring to. Comcast in Central Jersey provides YES-HD and MSG-HD feeds on the INHD channel, preempting INHD programming.
Master Splinter 01-17-06, 08:34 PM Hello, I am new here. i just bought my HT last month. I have comcast and I had a digital cable box already. I had been meaning to get a hD box but forget to call comcast. in another thread about the TV model I have I saw that with my TV having digital and analog tuiners I could get a lot of stuff w/o the box. SO I changed my hookup and connected the cablke box via composite cable, and then a second cable line into the tv and let it search. it founs over 200 channels total, mostly digital. So I saw the channels were normal except I had new things like channel 79 had sub channeles like 79.4. i found all music choice channels on there, and thropugh other channels like that all of the normal channels but they look much nicer than they do on the normal numbers. I have a bad signal some how through my cable so normal channels were not great looking, another thing to ask comcast about. Anyway, these new channels arent perfect, but look much better.
Then I went through more and found HDTV network channels. I had only see HD video on my xbox 360, so I was amazed at how good it looked.
upn 110.00
wb 111.1
fox 111.2
pcn 114.2
disc 114.5
ewtn 114.7
abc 118.1
nbc 118.2
whyy 119.1
cbs 119.2
So I still want the HD box since comcast has more HD channels through it, and so I can watch HBO and in demand things on it. By the way, how much extra is an hd box and do they have to do anything special or just connect it? Can i just go trade my box in at the office near me?
I love my set-up. It may not be the best, but I am happy. I am really looking forward to watching more HDTV.
HD Flyer Hockey is back!
It looked pretty good from my house.
I am not crazy about the shoot out yet though.
i'm in south jersey and was wondering if anyone has noticed any problems with their HD feeds lately?
specificly: the pit/colts game was messed up sunday, last night the i think it was cbs was all messed up and the basketball game on INHD last night loooked terrible, oh and i believe DiscoveryHD was funky also.
not sure if its due to the recent storms but its getting annoying, if its messed tonight i may just have to call Comcast CS.
I have seen problems with both INHD channels lately.
CBS has been good, I thought last nights "Love Monkey" was the best PQ I had seen in a while.
Pretty lousy PQ here in Lansdale, PA - not just INHD1 & 2. Anybody know what's going on?
WizarDru 01-18-06, 08:59 PM Man, the whole HD feed is messed up. What's going on? Pixelization everywhere.
well, i just got off the phone with comcast because my problems with the HD channels are still going on. we went through the routine of sending signals, disconeccting box from power to reboot, etc... of course still having problems. they suggested that i switch my box at the local comcast office for a new box because there maybe something wrong with the converter in it or something like that.
does that seem logical??? i currently have the moto dc5100(its a few years old). their explaination was that since its olny a couple channels that aren't working and all my other HD feeds are fine that its probably the box. if it was problem with the signal on their end i wouldn't have any HD channels. so this weekend i off to exchange my box for a new one. i hope this helps. if not i have a service call for next thursday.
i'll keep you guys posted
It does not sound like a box problem to me but either a problem at the headend feeding your area or a problem with a local node. Call the number posted in a prior posting and make your complaints to Comcast there.
DaveInBerlinNJ 01-19-06, 07:22 AM So, to me, that Comcast response seems to indicate that Olympic hockey will be shown on INHD.
Is Comcast allowed to show Olympic hockey on INHD if Universal HD holds those rights???
That is the question of the day. The only thing that I take from the response I received is that there may be some sort of programming on INHD. But, she was also wrong about CBS having coverage.
Another interesting point. Last night on NBC10 news they did a little promo with the newscasters about the upcoming Olympic coverage. 416 hours of coverage on the networks of NBC (CNBC, MSNBC and USA). No mention of UniversalHD. Could they be leaving it out because Comcast, who they promote with their WeatherPlus, does not carry UniversalHD?
WizarDru 01-19-06, 08:19 AM Well, it appears that last nights problems were localized to the Malvern area. It just irritated me that it spoiled a good chunk of Lost in the process. The HDTV feed was full of screen garbage and total sound dropouts. The non-HD digital channel was just as bad, and the analog feed was like watching TV with a bad antenna, full of static. Unfortunately, this was what I ended up watching to see the actual show.
One hopes that the problem has been resolved by now.
NatasNJ 01-19-06, 10:00 AM I am about to try and get Directv HD installed next week. I plan to use the supplied Directv OTA to pick up my local HDTV channels. I am in zip code 08108. Antenna website says I am 13.5 miles away from all of the towers and the direction they are in are all in one direction (for the channels I care about) and the line of site from what I can tell is clear.
Thoughts about if I will probably get all my stations in ok? Anyone else in the Collingswood/HaddonTWP/Cherry HILL/Haddonfield area using OTA?
Thanks for any info on the matter.

Thanks for any info on the matter. You should be able to get everything fine with an outdoor antenna. WTXF-DT 29.1 will be another matter, since they have the weakest signal apparently.
NatasNJ 01-19-06, 11:09 AM WTXF-DT 29.1 - FOX?
Really?
That sucks.. I do notice that over Directv itself the Fox signal looks the worse of the bunch.
Anyone else can comment on this? How their signals come in and look?
kjroddy 01-19-06, 11:23 AM On my HDTiVo WTXF-DT comes in at 92, peaking 94, pretty much the same as all the other major Philly channels. About the only Fox I watch is football games, and from a technical picture quality standpoint they were almost perfect this season... unlike the Eagles :(
Having said that, I am only five miles from the towers with a good clean line of sight and a rooftop antenna, so YMMV
newsman 01-19-06, 11:39 AM Yet, I am 4 miles from the towers, with line of sight and a rooftop antenna, and I get nothing from WTXF-DT, yet all the other stations come in loud and clear with a minimum of mid 80s on one of the channels.
carpboy 01-19-06, 11:39 AM HD Flyer Hockey is back!
It looked pretty good from my house.
I am not crazy about the shoot out yet though.
I'm so down on the camera work. The picture is great but I miss the PRISM days where the operators stayed reasonably tight AND followed the action. I can't see the puck half the time on shots now cause they are zoomed so far out, it is so annoying.
Goalline to blue line IS NOT good framing, HD or not. If I want to 'see' the ice like that I'll go and buy a nosebleed seat.

I'm in Medford and I pick up all channels (3, 6, 10, 12, 17, 29, and 57) clearly. I'm using a RCA indoor amplified RCA.
carpboy, I love the camera work. Why shoot tight and have to move the camera constantly trying to follow the action? The whole point is to keep most of the offensive zone within the HD frame. That minimizes quick camera pans which increases PQ and enables the viewer to follow the action like you are at the game. I have no trouble following the puck on any of my HD sets. I find it to be huge improvement over the way hockey used to be shot. The same is true for basketball. I would also love baseball to be shot out of the pressbox area so you can see the entire field of vision like sitting in the press bax. HD Net did that and it was fantastic. However, that looks best on a big screen. Just my 2 cents.
NatasNJ 01-19-06, 01:29 PM 1234: Can you provide me with the exact model of your antenna? Just so I can determine if the Directv provided one is comparable. Thanks..
Anyone gotten a 2nd HD or HD-DVR box from Comcast lately? Not only are they claiming there's a shortage of DVR's, but now the non-DVR HD boxes. "Motorola can't keep up."
I checked and was told this was in fact the case Drew_N. I was also told that this should be remedied by sometime next week. There seems to me more of a demand for HD than was expected. I had been telling them that there would be but it fell on deaf ears. Now we just need more HD content which is in the works!
I dont know why you would want the camera on the hockey games zoomed in more. Just makes for more camera movement. maybe you need a bigger tv =). Looks great on my 57" and have no problem at all following the puck.
sdevoll 01-19-06, 05:58 PM ...There seems to me more of a demand for HD than was expected. ...
Did that thought origonate at NBC by chance? Glad to hear more content is in the works :D ...
Just wanted to mention that the last few games I've watched for Flyers and Sixers have looked wonderful.
Regarding the camera work. You want to be zoomed in so that every player is on the screen at the same time. If you have a butt load of empty space then they are doing a bad job. Football is the worst as they feel the need to have 3 yards behind the running back in the 4:3 area then add another 5 for the 16:9 area and we don't get to ever see any of the safeties and often a wide reciever/CB gets cut off.

To each his own but as I wrote before, I agree that, with HD, they should back the camera off, same as they should when baseball returns. The close ups are an annoyance. I want to see the re-positioning all over the field in baseball. And in hockey, I'm not saying they should show the whole rink all the time, just the active 1/3 to 1/5 depending on whether the action is concentrated (which thanks to rules that limit the trap, does not occur as often thankfully).
1234: Can you provide me with the exact model of your antenna? Just so I can determine if the Directv provided one is comparable. Thanks..
RCA Amplified Antenna - Model Number: ANT1250 - Hope this helps. I bought it at Best Buy almost two years ago. The antenna is pointing out my sitting room window.
LongRufus 01-20-06, 12:32 AM WTXF-DT 29.1 - FOX?
Really?
That sucks.. I do notice that over Directv itself the Fox signal looks the worse of the bunch.
Anyone else can comment on this? How their signals come in and look?
I live in Cherry Hill and get a great signal for all the major locals. I use a $10 indoor unpowered antenna from BJ's(GE Millenium TV24734). The only station I can't get is NJ PBS channel 23 from Camden, but I only tried twice since it takes my TV's internal tuner 55minutes to do a rescan. Fox29 is no problem here.
I'm considering getting one of these USB HD tuners for my computer:
http://store.snapstream.com/fusionhdtv-gold-usb.html
It captures ATSC (over the air) and clear QAM digital signals, but only has one coax input.
Is it possible to combine OTA frequencies with cable frequencies on one wire? I realize the clear QAM feeds are just the local channels, but the reliability of my OTA solution is variable, so I'd like to be able to fall back to the QAM for some of the stations.
DaveInBerlinNJ 01-20-06, 09:02 AM luton,
I don't have an answer for your question, sorry. I would suspect that you could leave both connected t your single input, but would have to re-scan when switching between ATSC-QAM, but I'm no expert on it.
Are there any OTA-HD channels that are NOT available from your cable provider? I know in my case, the cableco provided all the locals and MORE. Negating the need for OTA.
DaveInBerlinNJ 01-20-06, 09:18 AM Oh, and I agree completely with JWhip on the Comcast HD broadcasts.
Flyers and (particularly) the Sixers games are superb. Stone cold things of beauty on my 106" screen. I get minor motion artifacts on fast pans, this only shows up on the Flyers, not with basketball... due to the smaller court and relatively slower speed I suppose. So, if anything, I'd be happier if they pulled back a little more on hockey broadcasts! To me, hockey is all about using space, so the more I see, the happier I am.
They COULD cut down on the amount of seats I see behind the nets during hockey games, but I understand the need to protect for 4:3 sets... one day.
FWIW, ESPN2-HD is already planned for at the following Comcast areas, All Philadelphia & S. NJ Head Ends, Lancaster Co., Lebanon, Hershey, Harrisburg, and several other SE PA Comcast areas.
Last date I heard for my area was March 2006...
NBC/Universal HD is due for our area in mid Summer 2006
Jwhip
Can you confirm or deny?
willwhdtv 01-20-06, 01:57 PM And what about TNT-HD?
I have heard and have posted that both are on the horizon for the near future but do not have a time estimate.
Flyers and (particularly) the Sixers games are superb. Stone cold things of beauty on my 106" screen.
I agree. During last night's Flyers game, I compared camera angles and zooming against HDNet's game. I prefered the camera work provided by the Flyers game much more than HDNet. If I recall, during the first few games on OLN they zoomed in tight on players. It was rather annoying, especially after a player loses/passes the puck. Widescreen is a huge benefit for hockey. I was out of town last Saturday, how did NBC do?
JWhip - thanks for checking into the HD box dilemma.
COMCAST NBC10 WeatherPlus is off the air tonight.
Does anyone think PQ is any better, I wish it was tomorrow at 2:00 pm
Flyers v. Pens in HD, that would tell us something.
carpboy 01-21-06, 10:30 AM carpboy, I love the camera work.
JW, I'd most respectfully disagree with you on this. I understand varying preferences of people and realize my ideas may not be what others think, but personally, I like hockey up close and personal. I play a lot and I am used to seeing things in my face. When I watch a game that is framed end boards to blue line I don't get the feel and action and excitement. I want to see a puck not only hit a stick and deflect but I want to see the angle of deflection. I want to see the stick blade that made the deflection, yada yada.
Surprisingly, it doesn't take too much of a tightening of frame to bring these subtleties into plain view. Framing of say, goal line to top of circles, would make a marked improvement IMHO.
As we made the transition from PRISM to CSN I've noticed this evolving. As I mentioned, I loved the production under PRISM. When CSN started I noticed that on occasion the framing would be pulled back, but only a game here and there, as if there were different operators or directors during that game and we were seeing individual preferences/philosophies at work. Then the ratio started to invert; More and more were the 'pulled back' version. But the 'nice' one was still appearing with moderate frequency. Now, for the last year (season) or so I can't remember but game or so where I thought the framing was they way I like it.
It seems the angle of the cameras to the ice is hugely important. I feel that cameras that are lower to the ice force a more tighter shot whereas higher ones can be pulled back without bringing too much office things into view. Being lower to the ice gives a more 3D feel to the view of play. From up high it looks flatter and 2D'ish (imagine a camera directly overhead pointing straight down for an extreme example).
I understand the joys of HD and the fact that more can be shown in real estate AND at better PQ (of course) but my approach would be that I would take advantage of the aspect ratio to tighten in without being to constrained as would be on a 4:3 ratio. HD can have good framing (according to me) and still show more ice surface than the old SD.
I fully understand about the inherent problems of tightness, quick panning, all that and it is something that has to have a balance struck. But I feel it can be done. When I see an example of what I think is darn good, home or away, I'll post a thread about it. We'll see what NBC offers today (if HD). I don't know if they bring in their own crews/equipment or just use the regualr local guys.
The last game (BOS) I thought was a little bit better (video!) than the prior. I noticed that more camera shots were interspersed into the 'main' shot as well as the main seemed a tinier bit tighter. Also, I noticed that the main would zoom in a bit as action moved to the ends. This is in direct contrast to what is normally done - they zoom OUT as play progresses away form the camera. Argggh!
Anyways, I appreciate everyones preferences but if I were King of the World I'd have a zoomout lock on the Wachovia cameras.
Oh, I have a 34XBR910, seated 9' away. I would really like to be about 3' closer but that is the layout I have to work with.
carpboy, we will just have to agree to disagree. Hockey is not watched that way in an arena and shouldn't be at home. Part of your problem is probably the size of your screen. The pulled back view is better the bigger the screen size. It looks great on 50" screen.
newsposter 01-21-06, 06:51 PM flyers was my 1st HD hockey game today...why in the world were 1/2 the cameras in SD? Is that the norm?
love the goalie cam and how they bash it at the end of the game. Too bad I really didnt hear anything from the mics they supposedly had on. Did anyone else? I woulda thought you'd hear swearing etc
The WeatherPlus in SJ on Comcast has been off air for a couple of days now. Probably not a coincidence that the PQ of the hockey game was better than expected. I saw very little blocking or artifacts. It did not have the "pop" of a CSN game but it was not horrible. I think it will take NBC some time to work out the kinks in their coverage, I am sure that they will add mor HD cameras as they go. As far as the palyer mikes I think they only let you listen in when they allow it they are not open all the time. I thought the 5.1 mix was good.
How does one get HD only, minus the digital channels with Comcast while still keeping the converter? My sister is on a tight budget and is considering dumping her HD box.

Me too - I thought it worked really well. The mics aren't going to be live, just edited snippets. They aren't that stupid.

Very simple, just cancel any packages above Ltd. Basic (it is the only required one), and she can keep her HD STB, and she will get all HD Locals.
If she has an HD DVR, she can't keep that w/o Digital Classic in this general area, I haven't heard of a difference on that yet.
Some other parts of the US it is a min. of Standard. (Although, through errors, there are probably exceptions to the DVR req. everywhere.)
drpepper 01-24-06, 12:01 AM What was up with OTA nbc 10 tonight?
Las Vegas had many errors ( breakups, squagles, etc), & now even Leno. My signal is 90+%. No other channel seems effected.
newsposter 01-24-06, 07:57 AM I thought that was because my antenna was misaligned. Guess not. After i started watching surface i changed vegas to record on SD. I also saw weird things on surface i've never seen on a show. there were horizontal lines of weird pixels in a small section of the screen but the rest of the screen was perfect.
good ole nbc
With UPN and WB merging into one network this fall (to be called CW), which station will we lose - WB 17 or UPN 57?
From what I have read WB-17 will be gone they will use the UPN channels for distribution of the new network.
newsposter 01-24-06, 01:12 PM I would love it if they kept 57. Come in VERY strong OTA here. Just spent a few hundred getting this antenna up and it would make my hdtivo useful for years to come (more reliable signal wise)
newsposter 01-24-06, 01:18 PM Tiny update on my antenna saga for anyone following along. After the guy trying every foot or so on the length of my roof, and even a higher roof, I settled on the original spot over the place in the attic where i got great numbers. I'm definitely shooting between a house and an unseen object in the distance. The installer was pretty flabbergasted. So now that I was 6ft away from the chimney, using a tripod and 5 ft pole, I'm pretty confident the high winds wont bug this mount again. CH 64/67 are in the 80s. Fox is a solid 71. Wb is a somewhat solid 68. Of course cbs/upn are 90.
In my case, higher wasn't always better. A foot horizontally made the difference between 10-15 on the signal meter. I spend 400 in labor etc getting it this far so hope they kill ch 54 and move the programs down to 32. Then I'd be set. Or if they even put CW on directv I'd be ok if the signal was as good as OTA (not likely though)
That is the problem with OTA reception. If I turn my antenna a fraction of an inch in one direction, all signals are lost. I am sticking with cable. Can only get KYW and UPN 57 anyway! All the UP programming will be on the new CW network which will be on the old UPN57 in PHilly. Channel 17 will be an independent with likely no HD anyway.

I saw that too. I was just channel surfing and noticed the problems.
I recorded leno last night off Comcast and there were no issues at all except for the poor low level sound.

You positive about stuff going to 57/32uhf? That would be great news as 17 is very weak here. Heck even when my antenna got knocked out the wind, upn and cbs still came in :)
Yes, the new CW network in Philly will be the old UPN57. Channel 17 will be an indie network.
newsposter 01-24-06, 03:24 PM beeautiful, wish it switched today. But watching 24 in HD will have been worth all this :)
Besides a better picture, the sound on 24 in HD is very, very good and really adds to the tension and anticipation.
newsposter 01-24-06, 09:24 PM My wife likes american idol so i sit on the sofa and surf while she watches (good laughs on that show i admit). Is it my imagination or is the pic soooo much better than all the nbc stuff (even with fox's tiny power/antenna height)? I mean, I know people complain about ch 10, but since i got this antenna aimed for fox, i've been looking at everything i can on fox. Just seemed like the colors are so fantastic on AI and 24 compared to when i watch west wing/surface etc.

Look at the first paragraph for the answer to your question, "CBS News has begun a migration to high-definition news acquisition. In March, the network’s owned-and-operated stations at WBZ-TV, in Boston, and WBBM-TV, in Chicago, will be the first to use Sony’s XDCAM HD Professional Disc system for its local programming. The other 15 CBS stations will begin converting to XDCAM HD throughout 2006 and 2007."

whotony 01-26-06, 12:18 AM sorry if i'm alittle late on the subject but the idea of zooming in closer for hockey defeats the whole widescreen hd viewing idea.
watch games broadcast in inhd from the oln network and you will see this is what thet do.
it is virtually unwatchable do to the quick camera movement trying to keep up with the puck.
worthless because as they are trying to make it easier to see the puck and the action it doesnt work because most of the time the camera loses the puck because it cant keep up.
quite often you'll see the back of a play and just players trying to back check.
and the camera is moving around so much it can make one dizzy.
comcast has just the right mix.
the offer the long shots from higher camera angles and lots of low shots from behind the glass or onn top of the glass that puts you rright in thw action.
it's really about perspective.

Yes, I noticed that too (on Lost last night). I just got the Sony 42 A10 and am running OTA with optical out from my tv. Last night is the first show I watched in 5.1 while running to my receiver and was not impressed at all. So I hope it gets better.

I have noticed that Lost, in recent weeks, does appear somewhat muffled or simplified...there's very little back-channel sound. However, I think that's from the show itself; the commercials appear to be fine in that regard.

GeekGirl 01-26-06, 10:22 PM nadum215 - Your question is a bit confusing. For wiring between the speakers and receiver, there are a number of manufacturers to choose from. Just do a search in the Audio area of this forum for "wiring" and see what comes back. As an example, check out http://www.bettercables.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=15
I would re-post your question in one of the Audio forums. The Speaker forum should be able to assist with speaker wiring. State the exact system you have ordered and ask for help.
Don't worry about being too much of a "newbie", that's what this is all about. It's more important to stay on topic. The "experts" in the subject monitor the threads that they know. It's not very relevant in this thread, so there may not be much of an audience here to help you.

My friend is hosting a Super Bowl party this year, however, Comcast said they won't be able to get him an HD box in time for the super bowl, do you think my Comcast Motorola box would work at his place?? BTW--I live in Phoenixville and he lives in Pottstown.
Thanks!
It depends on whether you are in the same system. If you are not, chances are that it will not work. Check to see if your channel line-ups are identical. if they aren't, forget it, it will not work. if they are, you have a chance. Call Comcast to see if they are in the same system. You can always try it but there are no guarantees. Just move the party to your place.
newsposter 01-27-06, 09:08 AM I'm far from an expert on cable but i'd say as long as you are on the same system it would be ok. I doubt there is a way to isolate where an authorization code goes to a physical address, but rather i'm guessing (and dont yell at me if i'm wrong :)) that the codes get sent out all over the network and your box is happy when it gets it's special key. I"m sure your box gets everyone elses hit but since it doesn't have that code, it ignores it.
just my 2 unexpert cents!

Hey, anyone recently get espnhd in DD now? I had always had to listen with pro logic and seems now its auto detecting DD.
Also what is up with ABC lately? They sound seems to be all out of wack. Was watching Lost and The center channel seemed to be really really loud. And could barely hear anything out of the rears. Anyone else have that problem? This has happened the last 2 weeks with Lost.
And 24 does have some really great audio. The PQ isnt that of anything on cbs, like csi, but still looks pretty good.

Yes, I have noticed the same for both. Espn went DD a couple of days ago, and Lost seemed a little "off" each of the past 2 weeks, but I couldn't put my finger on what the problem was.
My cable box has been killing me lately; sorry not sure whcih model, hdtv, dvi-not hdmi. It pauses, skips, tons of breakups in the picture, huge long 15-30 sec pause while it tries to figure out what ever it's figuring out, etc. Makes pretty much anything unwatchable.
It didn't start like this. What should I do? Will Comcast swap it out?
Oh yeah, Lost. We still watch it on our Directv HD-TiVo; I haven't noticed any picture issues through them, and for sound, sorry, we're not all-that qualified to comment on audio setups, but it's been sounding good to us, center channel and all. (but don't rely on my audio expertice--I have very little regarding the listening side. Wiring and connecting stuff, I'm great, but primo listening, not so much)

Get a new box from Comcast. If that doesn't work, then something happened to the wiring. Either way, it sounds like an unacceptable situation that Comcast must fix.

If you ever have a problem with a box from Comcast, exchange it. If the problem persists with the new box then scedule a service call. Sometimes there may be a loose connection, bad splitter, or squirrel damage(yes it happens because they sharpen their teeth on the wires :) ). You can't get this kind of service from D*TV.

BrentHD 01-29-06, 11:51 AM If you ever have a problem with a box from Comcast, exchange it.
I now have my third DVR from Comcast. I think the boxes have been improved thanks to better firmware, but they still have problems. I had two boxes that just froze up completely and nothing would bring them back to life. This third box has done OK but it still acts goofy sometimes when changing channels. You push the channel up or down button and nothing happens for up to 15 seconds. Most of the time it works fine. Now if they would just make a box with a larger hard drive. 120GB is just too small for HD programming.
Motorola does but Comcast has chosen not to deploy them at this time. Hopefully later in the year. I think up to 320 gb is available.

For those with comcast that are interested in the Flyers, note that tonight's game is an OLN game and will only be shown on INHD on tape delay, after a 9pm NBA game. So for those like me that want to watch tonight, looks like we're stuck with SD. Would have been nice to get a bonus road game in hd.

I should be clear, also - the Flyers game IS on OLN at normal time. It is only on in hi def on INHD, on a tape delay.
GeekGirl 01-30-06, 10:30 PM newsposter - Thanks for finding the info. I'm not going to even try to figure out why it was signed by WNJU (Linden NJ) and not Philly. That's for the lawyers.
Same situation here on the OTA antenna. UHF only - Channelmaster CM-3023 Yagi and UHF-only preamp. 6 moves to VHF? I can't support the wind loading on the mast for a VHF yagi. I'll wait till they move to make any changes (or least until spring).

hey have any of you guys watched any of the HD movies that comcast offers on indemand? They look great but it seems every 20 minutes of so something happens with the audio and it requeues its self. Actually saw The Island for the first time. That movie is pretty bad ass. On a side not ESPN has really stepped up there HD with all the College basketball. Cant wait until something is worked out with ESPN2.
And Is there any news of MHD coming here to philly or comcast anytime soon?
Hubcap, yes I have, but only the freebie HD movies - Lawrence of Arabia, Close Encounters, 5th Element, Jerry Maguire - on each and every one of them there is a split-second pause in the audio every 20 minutes or so, just as you describe. I was wondering if this was becasue they were freebies, and didn't bother pursuing the matter. None of these was shown in their original aspect ratio either. Disappointing.

I don't think they will add TNT HD in the near future. I am waiting for FIOS TV.
JWhip - Has there been any talk at CSN about doing some Flyers/Sixers/Phillies road games in HD anytime soon? With some of the other high profile regional sports networks (NESN/MSG) starting to do so, I was hoping we'd get similar treatment. Thanks.
I have been told to expect some road Phillies games in HD. There will be no Sixers or Flyers road games in HD this year. Maybe the 2006-2007 season. I quess they do not want to spend the extra money yet as they need to do upgrades to add equipment to do Sportsnite and the pre and post game shows in HD. This is in the planning stages now, actually being priced as we speak.

Seems to me, the backhaul costs are an easy out for them. I think it's more related to equipment and especially the road equipment. As they acquire/upgrade existing equipment, I think we'll see some HD road games. It probably also depends on the wiring internally at some of the venues. All those cameras and microphones don't magically connect to the mixing consoles, they need wiring, and it needs to to be HD-ready. That costs money and the home team incurs some of that cost with inside the wall wiring.
I recall some daily news live shows being in hd when the teams were on the road, which led me to believe that CSN would use their 'home' HD equipment (cameras, mixing consoles, etc) for DNL when the teams weren't home to use it for game broadcasts. It also led me to believe they really only had--at that time--one HD broadcast gear setup, and the could risk sending it on the road (or it wasn't road-ready, which wouldn't surpise me for early generation stuff).
Let's see what happens with baseball: twice the road games as the other two teams. And six months before the other two teams next seasons. I think a lot of phillies road games in HD this summer is a long shot. But by next fall, perhaps things might be better for Flyers & Sixers on the road.
Anyway that's what I THINK, but I'm probably just talking out my a..
The infrastructure at other venues is there. It is a matter of paying for the transmission lines to Philly for HD. They are in the process now of building the new studio for the new Mets channel. THose games should be on HD here as the Comcast people are building that studio. The same is true in Atlanta, Florida, Pittsburgh and most stadiums in MLB which have HD available. I have asked for it and was asked if I was willing to pay for the transmission lines to see the road games in HD. Obviously not. It seems to me that CSN wants to complete their build out to do all HD in Philly before they work on the raod games for any sport. My quess is that is will cost them another $4 mill to do so after spending $8 mill already.
WizarDru 02-02-06, 08:06 AM Is the prevailing desire from viewers primarily for HD sports only? I mean, I'm looking forward to the Superbowl, but Hockey, march madness and the rest, not so much. jeepmatt 02-02-06, 09:31 AM JWhip-
Rumor has it that Nashville is seeing Universal HD on its lineup today - any new news on when we'll be seeing it?
National Geo in HD will be great, I'm sure. I've heard rumors that Food Network is looking towards HD, but I don't see that as critical to the Food TV experience.
NOVA on PBS HD is nice as are their travel shows.
I think sports are a natural, as HD allows a completely different framing (and the additional detail) of the shot pulled back so more of the playing surface and players can be seen.
I was able to confirm that Comcast has a deal with Universal which permits them to carry Universal HD. However, the Philly area does not have bandwidth to carry it so they are showing the Olympics coverage only on INHD2. The deal with Universal permits them carriage but does not mandate it. We will get it once there is room to add it. I do not know when that will be. It is TNT-HD all over again.

Its a well documented fact that Comcast's bandwidth is near capacity. Losing a few digital channels won't make a significant difference. There are still areas that have yet to add TNT-HD because it's so tight.

I'd always expected cable to have a significant advantage in bandwidth compared to satellite, but I guess when you look at the channel lineups, it's pretty close. Cable does have the ondemand and internet riding on their bandwidth too.
I guess the grass is always greener...
Jwhip,
I almost missed it reading your post. Is the Olympics HD that would have been shown on UniversalHD all going to be shown on INHD2? I would be extremely pleased. I have been toying with the idea of adding E*'s new HD to my existing cable to get Olympic hockey in HD but cost was a killer.
That is the plan Howwen. Regarding bandwidth, remeber ADS, the new SD channels that are being added all the time, the internet and VOD. Frankly, to get more bandwidth, they should either increase the system to 1 Ghrz which they are considering or drop analog all together and get everyone a box. Seems to me that the first option would be cheaper at least at the outset. They are going to have to do this eventually. Might as well get it over with. Without the analog service, they would have bandwidth out the ying yang.
jwhip whats holding them back right now for upgrading the system to 1ghrz? Money issue or would there be some sort of down time on the entire cable system.
And you say the olympics will be on inhd2...will it also be in HD on NBC? If i recall the last time the olympics where on, they had olympics coverage basically 24/7 on NBCHD. Even if the content wasnt live.
Some HD will be on NBC other HD on Universal. It is the Universal HD stufff which will be on IN HD2. It is a money issue as for the upgrade to 1 gig.
neeshu89 02-02-06, 08:41 PM and what about TNT down in South Jersey? Any Word? Can't they carry that on INHD2 for the games too??
jeepmatt 02-03-06, 10:57 AM Some HD will be on NBC other HD on Universal. It is the Universal HD stufff which will be on IN HD2. It is a money issue as for the upgrade to 1 gig.
I believe a move to a 1 gig system would require an ENTIRE rebuild of the cable plant. This would take years to do all of the areas. New amps, nodes, extenders - everything would need to be upgraded to handle the higher frequencies. Also, wouldn't current cable boxes need to be changed as well?
I'm sorry - call me whatever you want - but this "running out of bandwidth" excuse has gotten old real quick. It's complete BS when you raise my rates - remove premium channels i'm paying extra for- and then tell me it's due to "all the great things that are coming". Then, turn around and delay new channels b/c you don't have any room.
willwhdtv 02-03-06, 11:06 AM Isn't that what D* is doing, launching new sats and investing and upgrading their infrastructure. They nearly don't have as much money as Comcast does.
jeepmatt, complain to Comcast not me. I am just a consumer like you with no influence at all. yes to upgrade will require the new equipment you noted but would only take about 6 months to complete a given system.
and what about TNT down in South Jersey? Any Word? Can't they carry that on INHD2 for the games too??
Haha, I gave up Comcast long time ago. The reason is they don't care about our market. But before I switch, I'd like to make sure the new one will offer YES HD w/o any issues. So, most likely I will delete Comcast in Apr or May.
Good luck!

jwbausch 02-04-06, 05:34 AM Just noticed this morning that Universal-HD is being broadcast in clearQAM here on Comcast (DelCo). Curiously just the other day the frequency (657 MHz) was being used for showing ESPN-HD in the clear! I'm happy to have Universal-HD now and I'm assuming that soon it will be added to the full system.
JWB
Very interesting jwb. Just like TNT-HD. Maybe? They also may just be doing some testing as two different people at Comcast confirmed for me that it would only be the HD Olympics coverage for now. Maybe others higher up have changed the plan, although these two are fairly high up the chain. it does show they have the bandwidth to do it now though it seems.
I have checked and what you are seeing is a bandwidth MUX test. Will be gone soon.
How can philly have the bandwidth and not us
Good question. Maybe your systems aren't at least 750 mhz.
neeshu89 02-04-06, 04:44 PM I know our system is at least 750 because I remember them laying down new fiber optic lines a few years ago. This is starting to become bull...I'm paying almost 60 bucks a month without any premiums just for digital cable and they can't even provide me 2 major HD stations?

only 60? My cable bill is around 150

yes it is
I checked with a contact and asked why there is a difference between Pa and NJ. I was told that there was a different management team in NJ and that NJ was "bandwidth locked" which does not sound very good. I guess that is a lot worse than bandwidth constrained. I will see if I can get my contact to tell me why that is. He is not involved in the management team for NJ.

whotony 02-05-06, 08:39 PM guess not.
is channel 6 news going to be HD soon?
there was a commercial for the new copter that will have an hd camera and a great picture
"even if you dont have an hd tv." as said in the commercial.
Looks like WPVI might be getting a new HD chopper soon, saw a commercial during the super bowl that said it is coming soon!
Sounds like they will beat out KYW and WCAU, NBC10 just got a new chopper this fall, so I doubt they are going to go buy a new HD one right away...
neeshu89 02-05-06, 10:50 PM does the chopper have to be hd? can't they just upgrade an SD one?
newsman 02-06-06, 02:45 AM Hmmm... Are they going to be the first in Philly with an all HD newscast? How is this going to work? I remember those channel 10 promos saying, "I'm so and so, and I'm proud to be working for channel 10, cause we're the first ones here with radar and school closings and such..." Well, guess what channel 10, time to follow the leader.
jeepmatt 02-06-06, 06:20 AM Hey guys-
I found a way to get more HD. I signed up with DISH friday night and will be installed on 3/4 for $33 a month cheaper than Comcast. They have 25 HD channels already with more on the way.
Turns out 3 people i talked to at the Super Bowl party i was at last night just recently did the same thing. We're all tired of channels being pulled, rates going up, and bs excuses.
newsposter 02-06-06, 07:41 AM Anyone else have bad reception OTA on the game yesterday? It seems when they went to replay, showed their graphic, that really caused problems with blockiness etc. Then there were a bunch of other times that it just went to hell. Overall not a super deal...but I've never gotten it on any other football game during the year and also watched ABC for over an hour after the game and there was no sign of any problems, so it was definitely the superbowl feed.

Yeah but the quality of their HD is not so good isn't that true and they don't have CSN
i wonder to if the entire channel 6 news broadcast will be in hd, or just the chopper. Seems like it would be pointless to just have the chopper HD. anyway good to see someone is moving towards HD.
mikeewing 02-06-06, 08:59 AM Anyone else have bad reception OTA on the game yesterday? Thought it was just the wind in our area, which also seems to effect all cable channels, not just HD for Trenton/Ewing Comcast.
So yes, there must have been problems with the Super Bowl broadcast.
BTW, tell the refs the optometrist called and their glasses are ready... sheesh, bad calls all the way through the game, most going against the Seahawks at critical times. And time management! Reminded me of last year's game...
Oh, well. Better luck next year. GO EAGLES!!!
willwhdtv 02-06-06, 09:37 AM Hey JWhip see if you can get a number for the NJ Management team that we can call if not a number at least an email address.
Thanks
newsman 02-06-06, 09:43 AM OTA reception and PQ wasn't good at all during last night's game. We've all complained about Channel 10 which has JUST Weatherplus on 10.2. Channel 6 has its own local channel on 6.2 and its weather channel on 6.3 taking up more bandwidth than Channel 10. It showed during last night's game. The blockiness on last night's game was almost un-watchable. I get a solid 87-89% on channel 6, and I thought I was getting in the low 60s with that much data corruption. CBS 3 does have the best OTA PQ in the area, due to its lack of extra channels.
willwhdtv, the NJ management team is well aware of the demands for TNT-HD. As it was explained to me, there are quite a few more must carry channels in NJ than in Pa. Also, SE Pa and Delaware are both fed off the New Castle, DE head end system whereas NJ is not. That is why NJ got the Orioles games and NBA games from DC on NBA TV HD on INHD a year or so ago when they were blacked out here. As a result, NJ is still bandwidth locked. Hopefully that will improve also. I was also advised that UHD will not be added as a full time channel as they want to save the bandwidth in SE PA for a channel with more compelling content that should be on fairly soon.
neeshu89 02-06-06, 04:08 PM are we at least getting UHD in place of INHD2 during the olympics here?
yes, but not as a full time channel. Only for Olympic HD coverage.
newsposter 02-06-06, 09:22 PM in case others like me haven't seen it, here's a chart of some bitrates for OTA and DTV
http://www.widemovies.com/dfwbitrate.html
As is usual, Las Vegas on NBC10 unwatchable, NASCAR opening was horrible with artifacts and macroblocking. Is there no one at NBC10 who owns an HDTV?!?
newsposter 02-07-06, 07:49 AM I didn't have those problems. Got lucky for once :)
NBC10 does not care. I will say this over and over again. They have no pride at all in the quality of their digital signal. Maybe in Feb, 2009 but not now. They view the whole digital thing as an inconvenience.
JWhip, If NJ is bandwidth locked, why don't they eliminate the HBO channels on analog (channels 14, 15, and 16), as well as the west coast movie channels like they did in PA and Delaware? This would surely free up enough bandwidth for a few more HD channels. Am I missing something, it just sounds so easy to do!
willwhdtv 02-07-06, 11:37 AM JWhip
Does all of NJ have one Head end system or are there more than one. Here in Central NJ they already have eliminated the west coast feeds, removed premium movie channels off the analog channels and have completed ADS so there should be no problem to add add'l HD channels (I believe) since we are a 750 Mhz system.
Is there a NJ law that states that you have to roll out new channels throughout NJ at one time or can it be done piecemeal?
mikeewing 02-07-06, 01:28 PM I don't watch Las Vegas, but Medium was fine.
On our system 208 has appeareed but all it says is to be announced in the guide, it can't be TNT tht is 204, If this is for the olympics i am cancelling comcast and going to dish, how can they find bandwidth to add UHD temporarily if thats what it is
208 is UHD Here, the entire excuses from comcast about bandwidth are BS, this is just more proof, there is absolutley no reason why they can not remove the west coast feeds and add a few more HD channels, i pay alot of money for cable and internet and i don;t want anymore BS, is bandwidth the excuse we will be given when ESPN2 Shows up for PA but not here while we still have encore love west? and noone else does
kurtlingle 02-07-06, 02:37 PM Anyone else have bad reception OTA on the game yesterday? I watched most of the game (OTA Sony A10 42 lcd) and saw a little blocking for a sec or 2 at a time, maybe 5-6 times during the game. I have a pretty strong signal so I figured it was ABC's fault.

AHHHH.... THIS IS BULL....UHD on a "bandwidth locked" system. THEY COULD HAVE HAD TNT-HD ALL THIS TIME!!!!
but....at least i'm getting something new
i said before there are no bandwidth problems here and this proves it, i wil ltell you exactly what happened people saw the promos for UHD that run sometimes about the olympics and comcast is getting complaints asking for it, noone probably complains about TNT, i bet the same thing happens when ESPN 2 comes. There is absolutely no reason why the west coast feeds are not gone 3 months after teh rest of the area also, tired of raising rates for BS. first person that says i should not complain because its only TV i will scream, my hard earned money goes to pay for this just like my hard earned money goes to pay the water bill and anything else
I was running through the channels and just noticed something, channel 15 used to be Showtime or cinemax analog, they removed it, for awhile that channel was empty when it was removed, well now its a shopping channel, this is just hilarious, it really is
You will be getting the UHD Olympics coverage only on INHD2. You are not getting another HD channel. UHD is NOT being added in NJ or Pa for that matter as a full time channel. I have passed on all the info I have been given. Believe it or not, that is your choice. I see no rationale at all for Comcast not putting on TNTHD in NJ if they had the bandwidth to do so. We had to wait in Pa for it for seven months after large segments of the country had it. When they could put it on, they did. End of story. Complain to your local Comcast office.
i am not blaming you i think you are getting BS feed to you also, talking to anyone from our local comcat office about anything is like talking to a wall
if we are getting the olympics on INHD2 then why has 208 shown up with UHD, INHD2 IS 207
willwhdtv 02-07-06, 03:32 PM Just got confirmation from Comcast and it is the same message that JWhip has been telling us. For the next two weeks starting Friday Feb 10th INHD2 programming will be replaced with the UHD feed showing of the Olympics on channel 207 in Central NJ.
i am convicned that those that run comcast in south jersey are clueless, 208 UHD thats not INHD 2
If you are getting 208, it will be gone in two weeks as it has been explained to me. We do not have 208 yet. If we do it will be gone in two weeks also.
Why would they remove it? i thought INHD2 was being preempted for the olympics
willwhdtv 02-07-06, 03:43 PM Shades - not disputing what your seeing but maybe they are using 208 just to test the feed from UHD w/o interrupting the INHD2 programming.
Thats the addition of a channel, which means they have the bandwidth for it, to remove it is a slap in the face to people that pay alot of money to them for lousy service, i don't want to hear no bandwidth from comcast anymore, BS
where were teh bandwidth issues when they replaced Showtime and cinemax analog with two new shopping channels, couldn't they instead not add those channles and add HD, yes they could
remove what? When Olympics HD covergae is on UHD, it will be inserted in place of regular INHD2 programming. When there are no Olympics HD coverage, it will be regular INHD2 programming. I have not checked the schedule to see if Olympics coverage will be 24/7 on UHD or not. The same thing is done in New England where NESN HD coverage is inserted in place of INHD2. This is not really all that complicated. The same was done here a couple of years ago when the removed CSNHD as a full time channel for awhile. A switch was installed at CSN which was flipped when an HD game was being shown which substituted that feed for INHD2 with a virtual channel number 207 assigned to that CSNHD feed.
Remove the channel that was added, INHD2 207 is still in INHD2 here, there is new HD channel, 208 UHD
Shades, like it or not, it is still a SD world. I would like no new SD channels being added with HD only but that is not going to happen. Comcast has had a surprising increase in the number of their HD subscriptions but they are still a fraction of their digital cable subscriptions (probably 10% or less) and less than 50% of their total subscriber base in this area are even digital cable subcribers. You do the math. They still feel they have to cater first to their SD base.
How are they catering to the SD customers, they removed Showtime and cinemax Analog and replaced them with shopping channles, are you going to tell me more people watch shopping channles than cinemax and showtime
willwhdtv 02-07-06, 03:57 PM Adding Shopping channels does not cater to the subscriber base but Comcast's pocket. There is no excuse for that from a subscribers point of view.
Sorry one channel is a spanish channel,
Hey Villanova vs Stjoe's is on ESPN2HD tonite, guess i can't watch it so comcast can cater to the vast spanish population here in monroe township, i ma one HD subscriber, thats one more than spanish speaking residents here, why is comcast not catering to me?
neeshu89 02-07-06, 04:34 PM The thing that pisses me off is not that UHD isn't going to be full time, its that it is now on without deleting any channels. That OBVIOUSLY means they have had enough bandwidth to put on TNTHD for the past however many months, but they dont do so for some odd reason.
Until I can clear this up once and for all, I will keep my mouth shut!

The big mystery to me is why the west coast feeds are still in south jersey but not all of jersey, JWHIP says also there are more must carry channles here but from what i can tell us and Philly pretty much have the same number of channles
I guess there is no hope to get TNTHD by Saturday in time for the Budweiser Shootout is there?

I'm no engineer, but I am sure there are other ways to temporarily free up bandwidth over a 2 week period than just deleting channels. Cutting back on PPV's, VOD or just plain old stealing bandwidth from the other HD channels are just a couple of ways to do it. If anyone complains about PQ on the other channels, they can just blame the Olympics and say everything will be back to normal in 2 weeks.
cutting back PPVs? they just readded the ten they removed months ago
The biggest mystery in Northern New Jersey is why Comcast has two feeds of HBO-HD,SHO-HD,MAX-HD and STARZ-HD,but claims bandwith problems for new HD channels.Just eliminate the double feeds and add the HD channels that other systems air.
they are not double, just being shown on two channles
one channel each, two virtual channel numbers, one data stream each.
Comcast has had a surprising increase in the number of their HD subscriptions but they are still a fraction of their digital cable subscriptions (probably 10% or less)
Seriously, how do they know how many HD subs they have in Motorola areas?
When someone orders a DVR, for instance, there is only an HD DVR for SD and HD customers.
I have a DVR and recently set up a DVR for my parents place, neither time did they ask about HD, so the installer didn't know what kind of TV we had, but at least they carry different wires.
Even if they had asked my parents, and they said 'regular TV', well, they will be getting an HDTV, hopefully soon, and it isn't like one needs to call them when one gets an HDTV, as they get the HD channels letterboxed on the DVR now.
Now, some people just order an HD STB, so they can tell right there, and in SA areas they have SD and HD DVRs.
But, still, they can't get a totally accurate number of HD subs.
I can confirm UHD on 208 INHD2 on 207. Just watched "Ski Dubai" on DiscoveryHD, a show I saw last night, and maybe it is in my head by PQ looked "different" I hope that they did not steal bandwith from there. I was fine with them pre-empting INHD2, but not lowering PQ on other HD channels (Quantity over quality)
Can't they take a bit of bandwidth from some digital channles, the fact is if they really wanted to add TNTHD or UHD fulltime they could find the way, they don't want to, they would rather add an anolog shopping channel and analog spanish channel

Comcast lobbied Trenton and the bill was delayed until the summer. We most likely will not see video until next year at the earliest.
Comcast is putting out beaucoup bucks to fend off the Verizon invasion. They feel that if Verizon gets a state contract that competition will start as soon as a twp is wired.
AS far as actual installation goes, the Verizon rep said they were just going to replace the outside box and run a CAT5 connection to the computer for now. They are not replacing any other copper wiring in the house. for voice or video.
mikeewing 02-09-06, 07:26 AM UHD is on 208 right now.
Ewing/Trenton also has UHD on 208 with full guide info.
JWhip, I know you said that UHD will replace INHD2 programming on 207 during the Olympics. Does Comcast need to make it look like a new channel just to test it out? I'm sure there will be many complaints if Comcast giveth and then Comcast taketh away!
Although I'm not sure how much Knight Rider and Quantum Leap I can take...
Looks like there must have been a change in plans as we are getting it too. I a, checking on seeing whether they have changed their minds and have decided to keep it on full time. I will say that it looks way better than it does for me on Directv, not that there is anything on that I want to watch anyway.
Carl Jones 02-09-06, 08:09 AM It's here in DE as well. Knight Rider in all it's glory.
kurtlingle 02-09-06, 08:51 AM Did anyone watch the Grammy's last night? My TV got quite pixelated during the Sly Stone ensamble. That's really the only problem I saw - oher than that it looked pretty good for a live event - I was impressed.
Also, LOST looked great too.
Just wanted to see if it was the signal or if my TV can't process strob lights. It's a Sony 42 RP LCD A10.
curtis104 02-09-06, 09:10 AM Does Comcast in Philly area have HD Cablebox with HDMI output?
yes, either a phase III 6412 or the new 3412.
Why would Jersey add UHD but not TNT all this time
Kurtingle, strob lights wreck havoc on HD encoders. It was not your TV or the Comcast or KYW signal. The problem was at the source.
zippychimp 02-09-06, 12:47 PM Channel 208 aka Universal HD will only be up for 2 weeks. After 2/26 it is slated to be removed entirely.
Pre-empting INHD/INHD2 were considered but Comcast decided it would be better to put up a stand-alone channel (208) for the Olympics duration.
Are we getting ESPN2 HD soon?
Depends on what you mean by soon. The negotiations between Comcast and Disney are not yet completed. This includes ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, Disney Channel, etc. Once the deal is complete, ESPN2HD will start to pop up on systems that can fit it in. Certainly within 3 months I would think.
that can fit it, thats great, i guess we will get the excuse that there is no bandwidth here
shades, what would you rather have? ESPN2HD or TNT-HD?
willwhdtv 02-09-06, 01:04 PM JWhip - Can you give us any insight on when will these bandwith issues will be addressed?

ESPN2 during the summer TNT during the winter
and JWHIP is right about UHD, terrible
If you like Battlestar Galactica, you will want UHD. I don't. Except for the upcoming Olympics and the US Open Tennis, UHD is a vast HD wasteland. I am glad you will all get a little glimpse of that.
I Like The HD channels for sports mostly, If we get screwed over with ESPN2 when it is obvious they can squeeze it in i will be really mad

JWhip is correct. Sometime in the upcoming months, hopefully (and likely) sooner rather than later....
When i say we i mean south jersey
EMAIL Resopnse i received, this is riduculous. No agreemen to carry TNT?? is this a friggin joke?
Dear Joseph,
Presently, we do not have an agreement to offer TNT HD or UHD. Though we have been authorize to broadcast the Olympics, we do not have an agreement to carrying UHD full-time.
Comcast is committed to deploying HDTV service. We are working to provide as many high definition channel broadcasters as possible. Here are some of the factors involved with expanding our high definition lineup:
-the negotiation and contract process required to obtain the rights to carry a specific high definition broadcast, such as TNT-HD and HD-Net.
-the increased bandwidth resources which are required
-the relatively low number of subscribers (currently only a small minority of customers have high definition compatible television sets)
We will continue to explore additional HD programming opportunities as more content providers make plans to offer their programming in HD format.
caesar1 02-09-06, 09:58 PM Today, I just noticed that Comcast (I'm in Montgomery County, PA -- Lafayette Hill) is carrying a new HD channel -- something called Universal HD.
I have never heard of this before. It is on channel 208.
What is this? Is this just for the olympics or is it permanent?
NBC local is already digital -- so why do we need another NBC HD station?
No announcement or anything by Comcast -- it just showed up?
I would rather have HDnet.
So what's the scoop on Universal HD? What is the "universal library" the website mentions?
I just looked at the schedule on the website -- you're kidding me:
Knight Rider and Law and Order reruns? Who watches this stuff?
No one that is why it will disappear after the Olympics.

Any permanent good HD Channel coming in its place then -- like HDnet?

JWHIP:
I noticed last night that INHD2 was simulcasting UHD, so it looks like your suspicions have been confirmed. UHD is here for Olympics only.
UHD content does not appear to be that great, but I thought the picture quality was excellent.

ah reliving childhoods with Kitt. If that's the station that has Equalizer also, I've actually be tempted to order it but can't see the 119 satellite
