kahlilj 12-27-09, 03:12 AM That's the next step in the digital upgrade -- to prevent people from seeing anything over basic tier without a Comcast device in between. Probably just PPV right now, but in the next few months will be all QAM channels. This will match what satellite TV providers and the telephone TV companies do to ensure you are not watching more than you are paying for. With Dish, DirecTV, Uverse you can't just plug the cable straight into the TV -- it has to go through a box first. Clear QAM has been the weak link in the chain -- cable providers are the only ones who have that and it is going away. You can use internal cable card instead of an external box, but it's still an electronic device that authorizes which channels you can see.
Comcast is giving two digital adapter boxes away for free, for more you will have to pay a monthly charge.
Wow! Are you serious Chazz? That is really disappointing, but not surprising.
Do you know when this went into affect? & Did Comcast or the cable industry make any statement about this??
Is there somewhere I can get more info on what alternatives they offer? Or do you or anyone else have any suggestions? (My TV does have a cable card slot, tho I have never used it)

I think "all" may be overstating it. Don't most agree that locally broadcast HD channels will still be available via clear QAM? That's pretty much all the HD QAM I've ever gotten via a Comcast connection anyway (except some occasional OnDemand from my neighbors). Of course, the SD non-locals will surely go away and will require a box.
slowbiscuit 12-27-09, 12:33 PM Locals will always be in the clear, both SD and HD. Plus a few shopping channels and a couple of other misc. channels, like local access and such. Chazz said 'anything over basic tier', and the basic tier is the locals.
None of this is news btw, Comcast has already started encrypting the expanded basic channels in the areas converted to digital. It's much easier than supporting physical traps but at the cost of customer loyalty since boxes will be required for every TV now.
Hopefully we'll see the new 4- and 6-way Cablecard HTPC tuners next year, so the folks comfortable with PCs can setup Windows 7 Media Center with Xbox360s as extenders at the TVs. You don't pay any additional outlet charges if you can drive the whole house from one server. Might not work for everyone but it's something I'm going to look into. I hate cable boxes.
AtlantisMichael 12-27-09, 03:42 PM Finally up in Woodstock, TVGOS is back and working in analog on channels 3 and 97( remap channel when using cable card).

TheRawData 12-27-09, 03:46 PM We're in Chattanooga and it seems I am one blessed cable user! The internet is up to 30 megs and my HD stuff looks ... well, quite frankly, gorgeous.
ChrisC47 12-28-09, 01:08 AM Finally up in Woodstock, TVGOS is back and working in analog on channels 3 and 97( remap channel when using cable card).
Thanks AM for the update. Just to be clear, what station are you seeing on 3 and on 97? Same?
So use of a CableCard will remap an analog channel? I didn't know it did that.

Cable channel 3 is WSB, the ABC network and 97 is the virtual WSB remapped through the cable card to provide the analog feed for TVGOS devices that can not use digital TVGOS. Without the cable card, channel 3 analog provides the data. But with the cable card in place, 97 is the analog carrier. Not sure as to why this is, but as long as it works, great. There is a digital feed as well, that being 803 WSB, if I understood the engineer correctly. Comcast has the feed from WSB as well as a backup fiber direct from ROVI, so with luck we should not have any more problems getting TVGOS from Comcast.

Is anyone on the South Cobb headend (Comcast) getting the Comcast World Of More lineup?
Guessing no, but asking. A tech who lives in the area said he heard something might happen by Jan 15.
SniperJoe 12-29-09, 08:08 AM I was speaking with Comcast Customer Service about two weeks ago to upgrade to HD service (as I just got a new TV) and they told me that my area (Norcross 30092) would be rolled out in the first quarter of 2010. Knowing Comcast, I'll consider myself lucky if I get it by May, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Oh, and when they send you a new STB or DVR, it may have the Grayson address on the return label, but when I actually checked the UPS tracking number, it was sent from Virginia. So I don't think they're lying when they tell you that they don't have any of the DVRs on-site.

I'll take May 2010, the City of Atlanta it appears with all of the delays in service delivery will be lucky to have the channels by May 2011. I am afraid by that time the focus will be on the NFL football package coming to CC and not add channels to those who have not been upgraded. The greater Metro area must be more of a cash cow than the City for CC. We really don't have a viable alternative. I checked into Uverse it really sucks! The internet is the caveat, we really don't know where all of that is going but with all of the big sucking up content we will probably see more channels but with the same content on at different days and times but that's why I have a DVR to that for me not CC.

Not yet, even though it was originally promised for 10/15.
on my headend (stone mountain), the new pay movie HD channels are in the 700's, totally separate from the main teir in the 800s (the sports packages and PPV are inbetween).
Worked the phones hard today. First, called Best Buy to make a warranty claim on my 3.5-year-old Samsung LNS3251, which in recent months has developed a dark cloud/discoloration on the center-right part of the screen. Good thing I got the 4-year warranty! They're sending someone out to look at it next week.
Next, called Comcast to complain about the slow World of More implementation in our area. I used the technique suggested by others (selected the "considering canceling service" menu option) but only got $10 off for 6 mos. versus the $15 some others have gotten. Guess I should have hollered louder. I did get them to commit to finding out a firm date for when we would get those channels, which they're supposed to provide to me. Not holding my breath.
Finally, called the Atlanta Comcast number and asked about getting a DSX 3400. The rep seemed a little confused about what I was asking for at first, but eventually got it. She suggested I go to the Decatur office first and see if they have any there, as she didn't think they could ship me the new DVR (or at least didn't know how to do it without having a tech bring it and charging me). I may do that tomorrow. Just out of curiosity, those of you have gotten the DSX 3400 shipped to you, how did you swing it?
Joejeep 12-30-09, 07:47 AM Tybee, I called the Atlanta Comcast number and asked if my local office (Decatur) had any of the new DCX 3400s. I was told they would not have them, but that they could ship a new one to me, and that they'd waive the shipping charge. I think you need to just call until you get a rep who will/knows how to do it for you. I know mine had to put me on hold while she processed the order. You will have to bring your old box back to a comcast location and turn it in (or you will be billed for having two). I did so, and asked out of curiosity whether they had any at the store, and they said no. They basically just send you a "starter kit" which includes the HD/DVR, a new remote, and all the cables.
Not yet, even though it was originally promised for 10/15.
Well hey, guess what was in today's mail?
"This is a letter to share some exciting news about your cable service. Comcast is enhancing our network to bring you the World of More.
"Effective January 26, 2010 all Expanded Basic cable channels (30-78) will be transmitted exclusively in digital format..."
Blah blah blah. Also interesting: While there is a flyer that references new channels, including FXHD (which is what I've been looking for), it doesn't actually give a full listing of all the changes and/or the new lineup.

Thanks. I suspected this might be the case. You saved me a trip. I'll call again. Incidentally, what number were you using, and what menu options did you choose to get to the person who helped you?
Joejeep 12-30-09, 06:57 PM 404-266-2278. I chose cable, and I believe the option to cancel/downgrade service. That always gets their attention. I've noticed you get a wide range of help or lack thereof, so if someone doesn't give me what I want, I hang up and try again. I got lucky this time.
Joejeep 12-30-09, 06:59 PM Still waiting for any kind of word about the World of More in 30032. I'm beginning to think it may not happen in April as customer service told me repeatedly. I don't understand how hard it could possibly be. Hire some more people for temporary work if you have to, there are plenty out there who need jobs Comcast!

Comcast doe not have an incentive to provide a timely rollout when it is virtually a monopoly (not enough of their customer base is going anywhere because there competition (directv, uverse, etc.) is very limited in the capacity it can handle timely as well). Each has for the most part has a manual process with limited automation used. This will not change for several years captive to broadband capability of the masses. We are beginning to see TV, dvd, dvr, phones, and other portable devices become capable of handling content. Cable as we know it today will change and has changed as we become more and more of an on demand society. I get alot of my internet over the phone these days because it is more convenient (yes that is a preference) for me.
Joejeep 12-31-09, 03:44 PM Quite true Titans. I'd hate to think where we'd be if it weren't for the limited competition. I heavily use the internet with my iPhone as well. If the Apple tablet lives up to my expectations, I'll probably be doing even more surfing on the go. I wonder if Apple's rumored upcoming attempt at bypassing cable companies for TV content will be successful?

The tablet will be another of Apple's defining moments. And Google is one to watch as well, deep pockets.
Joejeep 01-01-10, 12:26 AM I'm hoping the tablet can be a replacement for my laptop. I see myself with a tablet and an iMac vs my current laptop in the future.
Could someone please scan the recent mailer for me? I remember reading about the pricing down to the minutia in terms of full basic+digital service versus digital starter...cable card... dta's etc.. I can't find the nice summary on comcast's website. thank you in advance.

Same here, in Gwinnett. My tuner is showing no carrier on channel 108, so it's not a matter of encryption. Haven't found WXIADT or WGCLDT on any other channel yet, so I can only get the SD versions. Anyone else find those channels?
Same here in Midtown...no WGCL-HD or WXIA-HD in QAM. Thankfully everything is a rerun today. Hopefully they fix it soon.
slowbiscuit 01-04-10, 07:07 PM They've both been moved to channel 73 on QAM, same PIDs. Found out when I got home and the wifey said Y&R didn't record on my Myth box. Coincidentally (or not), I had received a message on my Tivo saying that Telemundo was deleted yesterday, which used to be on channel 73 in analog.
Picspop 01-04-10, 08:07 PM Yup, there 'tis. 46 & 11 on 73. Thanks!
I am in Douglasville and today I lost NBC and CBS in HD, although I can recieve them in SD. I rescanned this evening and entered 73-10 for WGCL, and 73-30 for WXIA without success. However I did recieve C-SPAN 3, Biography, History International, Sprout, G-4, and Bloomberg. Maybe they will restore NBC and CBS tomorrow.

ALBIG,
I'm also in Dville. Have you gotten anything from Comcast regarding expanded HD lineup, or even your rate card for this year? I haven't gotten anything. When I called about getting a DCX 3400 to replace my DCT 6416, the less than helpful CS rep told me that I wasn't getting any new channels for my increasing rate (Digital Starter package went up 2 bucks, and cable modem rental went from 3 to 5 a month). She told me that the digital transition should be completed for me within the month, though.
For all,
Once they transition to digital, will they be blocking the QAM content soon after that, or have they left QAM turned on so that a set with QAM tuner can still display programming without the DTA. The DTA's are clunky and slow, but at least yield an expanded lineup on the analog sets I plugged them into. If I plug the DTA into an HD ready set, will I lose the HD channels I'm currently pulling in through the QAM tuner?
Since I'm asking questions, can someone recommend a decent, cheap cable modem that works well with Comcast HSI? The old Moto Surfboard I had when the install tech showed up 4 years ago was working just fine when I left my last residence, but the tech couldn't "make it work" and offered me the "guaranteed" leased modem at 2 buck a month, or whatever it was then. $5/mo is irritating me enough to do something about it.
Thanks,
Jason

If you want to own a HSI modem, and intend to stay with Comcast HSI for a long while, I suggest buying Moto SB6120. That's the latest, greatest modem that's compatible with the latest HSI platform - DOCSIS 3.0. Best Buy is selling that modem for $85 plus tax.
If you might want to get Comcast Digital Voice in the future (possibly part of triple-play packaging), then you'll need to buy a modem that has an etma, which is necessary for phone connection. The Moto SB6120 does not have etma. There are fewer of the D3/etma modems in retail market and they are much more expensive. So, if you think you might get CDV in the future, then you'll probably be better off renting until those type of modems become more plentiful and prices come down. You'd still only be paying $5 monthy rental fee for the combo D3/etma modem.

I just tried 73 and still did not get CBS or NBC.
I only subscribe to Basic Cable with internet.
I think 73 is in the range of frequencies filtered out
for Basic Cable. If so, I think this is in violation of
the FCC rule that require cable companies rebroadcast
the Over The Air primary digital local channel as part of basic service.

Trying to upgrade my HD DVR (DCH 3416) to the DCX 3400 using your suggestions and called the 404 number. The rep suggested I take the old box down to Malone Dr. and try for the upgrade but she told me she has no way of telling if they have any available. Definitely do not want to unhook everything, drive down and wait in line to find out they have none in stock. I suggested the starter kit as you did but was told they have no way of requesting a particular model, they just ship out what is next in line at the warehouse. There is a shipping and handling charge of $10.00 I did manage to get waived, so I figured, what the heck, it's worth a try. At the very least, if I get an older model and have to return maybe they will have the new one there. Saves me the time of doing all the wire connections but it does add another drive down to the store. Maybe I will get lucky

This sounds pretty much exactly like what I was told when I called last week. Haven't made a second attempt yet. I would definitely prefer getting the 3400 sent so I can try it out for a few days before swapping in what has been a very reliable DCH 3416. I've used enough Comcast Moto boxes to know that getting a good one is a rarity.

I noticed there were some others having the same problem with NBC HD and CBS HD missing/unable to tune. Has anyone been able to figure out what is going on?
I am using a Media Center box with Windows 7, and none of the 3 NBC HD, or CBS HD channels are working. Following others on the thread, I first added a QAM channel 73.1 64 bit modulation. This didn't work, so I changed the modulation to 256. Neither way was I able to tune into the HD versions of the channel.
Has anyone gotten this to work on another system? If so what did you do? What channel did you re-map to? I am going to rescan the channels later tonight after my recordings are done. Anyone have any other thoughts?
I really, really want to figure this out before the olympics start.
Thanks all

73.10 for CBS(WGCL-46)
73.30 for NBC (WXIA-11)
Make sure to enter that zero to the right of the decimal point (i.e. 73.10, not 73.1). At least that's what worked on my Sony last night.
Let us know if that works.

cracker 52 01-05-10, 11:08 PM To the nerds of the world, sorry for the typo. Most people just need to know what general features of the modem are needed to get the service they desired without the technical details. (I really didn't have to use EMTA acronym, just modems that also has voice data capability, or VOIP - voice over internet protocol.)
In case people want the extensive technical details of other acronym I used, below is the link that explains DOCSIS, including 3.0 version:

Once they transition to digital, will they be blocking the QAM content soon after that, or have they left QAM turned on so that a set with QAM tuner can still display programming without the DTA. The DTA's are clunky and slow, but at least yield an expanded lineup on the analog sets I plugged them into. If I plug the DTA into an HD ready set, will I lose the HD channels I'm currently pulling in through the QAM tuner?
Based on what they've done in other markets so far, yes we will lose all but the locals in clear QAM after the migration. If you use the DTA, you will also lose all the HD channels because they cheaped out and didn't put composite (or S-video) outputs in the box, so you either run the cable from the wall or from the DTA into your TV. Yes, it sucks, but they want you to rent their overpriced HD STB for HD sets anyway. The DTAs are only intended for use with old analog sets.
Frankly, you'd be much better served with a Tivo HD or one of the new 4-tuner Cablecard HTPC cards when they come out. There's no way I'm paying Comcast $9/mo. extra just so I can watch all the non-local channels in HD. I could add an extra Tivo to my account for $7/mo. and get a DVR for less than what I'd pay for an STB. All you lose is VOD.
Otter3082 01-06-10, 10:51 AM 73.10 for CBS(WGCL-46)
73.30 for NBC (WXIA-11)
Make sure to enter that zero to the right of the decimal point (i.e. 73.10, not 73.1). At least that's what worked on my Sony last night.
Let us know if that works.
HomieG,
Thank you so much for your help. I was able to remap the channels to the updated guide. I'm glad comcast notifies their customers to changes ;). Oh well, thank you again. Now I just need that new hard drive to get here before the olympics start.
Devil98 01-06-10, 12:29 PM Cracker 52 and slowbiscuit,
Thanks for your responses.
I have great cell coverage at home and zero interest in VOIP, so I'll be pitching the $85 investment to the finance committee. If I pick up a new modem, I'll let you know how it works vs. the 5 year old docsis 1 model surfboard.
As to the loss of HD with the DTA, I'd love to pick up a Tivo HD, but the finance committee shoots that investment down every 6 months. Looks like I'll ride the QAM until I lose that option, then figure out a way to run coax direct to the TV for local HD and split the DTA signal through an old VCR running S-Video out (or something along those lines).
Thanks again,
Jason
cracker 52 01-06-10, 12:41 PM Correct me if I'm wrong, but CC customers have a choice of either 2 free DTAs or 1 free STB per household. But I'm not sure if that depends on what service tier you have. If you only need one unit, you can get a free STB instead of 2 free DTAs. I'm not sure though what the STB can do as far as local stations HD broadcasts. You may want to give CC a call and see what the STB can do in that regard.
slowbiscuit 01-07-10, 08:08 AM You get a free STB *and* 2 free DTAs, but the free STB will not be HD. You have to pay $8/mo. extra for that (I think), according to the latest rate card. I think this is just wrong when all the channels are available in HD (or soon will be), but it's going to be a while before an HD STB is priced reasonably or included with service.
Note that you get all the HD channels included with your tier of service, but you can't actually watch anything but the locals in HD without renting (or buying) some sort of HD STB or DVR.
On Saturday, I went to the Cascade Rd. office and got the HD/DVR DCX 3400. My box has been rebooting everyday since Monday. As soon as the guide loads and I set my series recordings, it reboots and takes a full day to reload the guide information. Is this a defective box or is it a common problem with the new boxes?
blstriker1 01-07-10, 11:31 AM I have a new 52" Sony Bravia LCD with a comcast motorola box. About 50% of the time if I am watching a HD Channel and switch to another HD channel the left side of the screen shows a smushed version of the new channel while the right side of the screen displays a frozen and distored picture from the previous channel. In addition, If I attempt to go to another HD channel I will see the previous comcast menu bar stretched and displayed on top of the current menu bar. I can correct this problem by switching to a "non" HD channel and back. Is this a Comcast or Television problem? I am anxious to know before my 30 return policy expires.

Looks as bad as it always has, to me.
Spent a lot of time at my folks' over the holidays, and they have DISH. Picture is soooo much better, though in fairness, part of that could be that they have a nice Sony 1080p set.

I think it's 1 STB and 2 DTAs AND the STB can be HD (they were making a big deal before about free HD). I know I have 2 DTAs and a HD DVR . . . I pay $10 for the DVR portion and the HD is free (I was paying $17 until they came out with "free HD", I called and had them drop it to $10)
BTW, will be interesting to see if I get the new channels on the 15th as I was told a few months ago . . . I'm in 30071, G1, Norcross . . . I'll let ya'll know if I do

Run that back? I'm paying $15.95 a month for a Comcast HD DVR, which is exactly what is shown on the 2010 Comcast Atlanta rate card. :(

I'm using SageTV with an AverMedia TV tuner, and I've tried all variations of the above numbers with no luck. Anyone with tips on how I can get NBC back?
Does anybody know what equipment Comcast is using as a non-DVR HD box in Atlanta? I have a self-install kit coming my way and want to read up on what's in it. Also wondering if they handle HDMI by default now or if it's still luck of the draw.
cracker 52 01-08-10, 12:14 AM I have a Moto DCX 3200 which is Comcast's newest HD only box. It has HDMI connection. The tech installed it, but it was just a matter of hooking up the cable to the box and HDMI to the TV and calling CC to configure the new box.
You can change the settings by turning off the box (using the remote or the buttons on the box) and quickly pressing menu button. You can then change or experiment the settings in accordance with the type of HDTV you have as well as your viewing preference. One suggestion is to set the HDMI output to 1080i (or 720p if you have a 720 HDTV) as it will allow changing of channels to be more prompt than if you use the native setting. Some TVs are faster than others to change its resolutions but my 2-year old 1080p Samsung plasma is quite slow.

Yeah, that's what I was paying . .$5.95 for HD and $10 for DVR, but when they were advertising free HD (which in the fine print is 1st outlet only is free), I called and asked them about it and they dropped the $5.95 portion . . . I only pay $10 now ('DVR service', or something like that)

Interesting. The current rate card says "DVR or HD/DVR Service: $15.95", suggesting that this is the cost for a DVR, period. Well, whatever you got, more power to you.

I don't see a difference either.
Roger Weiner 01-08-10, 01:47 PM This sounds pretty much exactly like what I was told when I called last week. Haven't made a second attempt yet. I would definitely prefer getting the 3400 sent so I can try it out for a few days before swapping in what has been a very reliable DCH 3416. I've used enough Comcast Moto boxes to know that getting a good one is a rarity.
Placed my order for a DVR starter kit on Tuesday, UPS delivered it Thursday. I got lucky, it was a new DSX 3400. They included a HDMI cable, a 3 ft and 6 ft coax cable and the new gun metal grey remote. Plan on swapping it out over the weekend to see how it works. Then will have to drive down to the store to return the DCH 3416. You should try it. Now over to the DSX 3400 thread to read its' 40 pages and play with the settings over the weekend.

Thanks for the heads up Rick! I'm in 30326 as well. This my be the first City of Atlanta date mentioned. I was anticipating later this fall or even 2011. Hopefully we will have it sometime near that date. I will be waiting on the postman today.

Cjv, I received my self-install kit from Comcast about two weeks ago and it was an RNG110. I am not sure which box you'll receive, as mine as a self-install kit, but it sounded like cracker's was brought by a tech. Also, mine is only a set top box, not a DVR. It was HDMI by default and it was a pretty simple matter to get it set up on the account and activated. I had to call twice because the first Comcast rep I spoke to had no idea what he was doing, but once I called back and spoke to someone knowledgeable, it was a pretty simple process.
I have a couple questions regarding Comcast programming in the 30305 zip code. We are thinking about putting a new LCD (46 inch...most likely) in our living room, however we don't want a cable box cluttering up the joint. If we hook up the LCD directly what kind of programming (especially HD) are we going to get? We already have the digital package with HD/DVR in another room. Any thoughts?

These are the qam channels you will be able to see with the tv tuner until comcast converts then you will need a box from CC. Everything is 480I unless marked with HD. Comcast Atlanta

The current HD lineup is pretty slim. Whats to be expected in the new lineup? Is there a proposed date (not like it means anything)?
Thanks for the help!
Oh, and P.S. My HD-DVR is also 15.95 a month after the first 3 months. For the first 3 months, I am getting the DVR free. Not a great deal, but I will say that Comcast's online chat support has been much more helpful as far as getting some discounts (free HBO/3 months, $9.99 Playboy for 6 months {had to refuse that one, but its out there to request}, the DVR discount, free install, and a $15 discount on my digital premier package for 3 months. The phone rep offerd no discounts and would not give free install. The chat rep gave everything I asked for and then even offered the playboy discount and the $15 monthly discount.

1) For a 46" TV, you are going to want HDTV signal, I would think. That's going to require a set top box. You only get the local channels in HD with jack straight in.
2) In the next few months, you will need a device (either external box or cable card) to access any digital Comcast programming. What if you had DirecTV, Dish or AT&T U-verse? You would need a box "cluttering up the joint". You can't plug their cables straight into your TV. Comcast is going the same way. Clear QAM is going away. You will only get the channels which you are authorized. (affects me too -- I have a new 19" HDTV LCD in the office. With jack straight in, I get more channels than "Digital Starter" level. With my digital adapter box I only get the channels which are authorized.)
That's why the whole "hang the TV on the wall" stuff never made any sense to me. You still need a stand for DVD and cable/satellite box, plus other equipment and accessories -- even if it's not your "main" TV (which may also have gaming console like a Wii). Still you have equipment that needs a stand. Might as well put the TV on top of the stand!
The stand helps hide "clutter". All the cables go behind.
Effin' Comcast....no HD NBC or CBS just in time for the playoffs, pfft.

Its not the end of the world, I do have an HD antenna in the attic, will have to plug it in now just to get those two channels in HD.
slowbiscuit 01-09-10, 02:05 PM Rescan all your digital channels, they've got to be somewhere. They don't encrypt the locals, HD or not.
Hi there, I've got a few questions, and I was hoping somebody here might be able to help me.
First, thanks to titans4ever for posting list of clearQAM channels, that answered a few of my questions right away. And thanks for those pointing out the NBC/CBS move, as that answered a question that I didn't even know I had! (After reading that, I checked, and sure enough, NBC & CBS had moved and my HTPC couldn't find them. It explained the nagging lack of signal errors anytime I tried to record something on CBS or NBC that I hadn't yet had the chance to look into!)
Now, the questions:
My HTPC's guide did strange things, randomly adding/removing channels, and I checked yesterday and discovered I had two or three of each channel below 100, somehow (it did all this by itself...), so I sat down this afternoon to reprogram the channel listings. When I went to Comcast's website to look up the official channel listings so I could compare with the list in this forum, it gave me three options for digital service: Atlanta, Atlanta World of More, and Atlanta City. I live in 30309, and the sticker on the back of my box says Vinings (Does that mean I'm on the Vinings headend?). Which of these am I? I'm fairly certain (at least after reading the past month of this thread) that I don't have WOM, as I haven't seen any sudden influx of HD channels, but I could be wrong. What's the difference between Atlanta & Atlanta City?
Also, I've noticed in looking through this thread that Comcast's doing away with ClearQAM once they complete the WOM transition. I've been planning to get the Ceton CableCard quad-tuner in the near future. What is Comcast's pricing for CableCards in Atlanta? And just out of curiousity, do I still have to go through channel by channel to program the listings in WMC like I do for the ClearQAM channels?
Finally, I get all my bills online, so I tend to throw out everything I get from Comcast in the mail, because it's usually trying to get my to buy their internet or phone service. I don't recall seeing any new rate cards or flyers about WOM. Do they have anything important on them that I should have actually read them? Did people in midtown even get a WOM transition flyer?
Sorry for so many questions, and thanks for all the answers!
Rescan all your digital channels, they've got to be somewhere. They don't encrypt the locals, HD or not.
No dice on the rescan, good suggestion though, was worth the time, found a couple new HD channels I was missing out on. NBC and CBS are still a no show but the ole HD antenna worked like a champ and yesterdays NFL games looked great! No weird artifacts or dropouts, etc. Glad I bought that thing as a backup now.
LedHead69 01-10-10, 09:36 AM I just recently added Comcast (3 years of free cable at a previous residence) and I wanted to know if anyone has seen any info on the WoM roll out in the Norcross/Lilburn area (30047). I'm in Norcross 30071 and was told mid Nov. that it would be Jan 15th for me . . . of course, originally it was suppose to be October 15th, so I'm not 100% confident they will hit the new date, but seems reasonable.
I'd expect the new channels to be just like any of the other WoM lineups that have already rolled out in the area . . . biggies for me are Comedy Central, Weather Channel and Speed.

hudsonmike 01-10-10, 10:35 AM This is my saga around the "channel switch" :(
Just recently moved from Boston, staying in Midtown. The TV is a no-name WinBook (MicroCenter's brand), but it does have QAM tuner built in.
I did the channel scan (I think QAM mode = STD) in early December, and got ABC/FOX/NBC/CBS HD, that used to come in on channels 2.1, 5.1, 11.1 and 46.1 respectively. Everything was good, except sometimes 5.1 would show FOX HD, and sometimes it would show one of the GPB stations (not sure how this even theoritically possible), but I got around it setting the favorite channel.
Fast forward to this year. First 46.1 and 11.1 disappear; and the 5.1 and 2.1 follow. The other HD channels (36.1, 14.1, 69.1) are fine.
I found this thread and did a rescan. My TV's tuner found 4 sub-channels for 73 and 3 sub-channels for 98 (i.e. what this thread says). However none of the work consistently. My TV labels them 73.1-73.2-73.3-73.4 and 98.1-98.2-98.3 respectively. Sometimes I could get to 73.1 and 98.1 but never to the rest.
Our building has a public area downstairs where we have some Samsungs LCDs. There, everything works as advertised:
73.10 CBS HD 1080I
73.30 NBC 11 HD 1080I
98.3 WSB ABC 2 HD 720P
98.248 RTV
98.804 WAGA Fox 5 HD 720P
...with exactly those sub-channels numbers.
So I am beginning to think that my TV cannot handle whatever comcast just did. The funny part that I get all the other HD channels:
45.812 WPXA ION HD 720P
29.2 WATL 36 HD 720P
29.810 WUPA CW 69 HD 1080I
...just fine (they come in on channels 14.1, 36.1, 69.1 respectively).
My tv has a manual channel add function, but it only accepts integer numbers as channels. Thus I cannot try to add 73.10. BTW, when I manually add 29, it flashes "success message", and as a result I get to see channels 36.1 and 69.1
If I try to switch to channels 73.10 it tells me "no channel found". When I hit 73, it goes to its 73.1 and often shows nothing ("no channel data"), but sometimes it does show CBS HD
Sorry for the long ramble. Please help me
slowbiscuit 01-10-10, 12:41 PM Unfortunately that's one of the other problems with QAM tuning - some TVs handle it fine, some don't. My old Akai plasma sometimes takes a few tries to tune a local HD channel but does find all of them on a scan. Some are mapped correctly to 11-1, 5-1 etc. some are not, but they're all there.
Joejeep 01-10-10, 07:42 PM This is slightly off topic, but I went to Sony Style and saw a 3D TV demo. Impressive, like seeing Avatar at home. But there was noticeable flicker. I was told it was because the 3D glasses were running out of juice (battery running low), and since they were prototypes, they needed to have the battery replaced rather than simply recharging the battery. If this is true and the production model TVs don't have noticeable flicker, I'm sold. Now, to bring this back to this thread, how many decades do you think it will take Comcast to offer 3D channels (Discovery and ESPN are working on their own 3D channels now)???? Maybe sometime in the year 2030 for the north side of the ATL, and "coming soon" for the southside and the city itself?
Sublime 01-11-10, 08:59 AM I'm using a Win7 with an HDHomerun and can no longer get most of the HD locals. I've scanned and rescanned with no luck. Still have tons of SD QAM channels (including all the locals), but Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS are no where to be found.
I'm part of what used to be the Winder Adelphia. Anyone else experiencing this?
I have re-scanned everyday trying to recieve CBS and NBC in HD, 73.10 and 73.30 with no luck. I called Comcast for three days and even went on their chat forum and reported it. Everyone said they would file a report.
Well tomorrow, the tech will come out and examine why I (we, the entire west side of Metro Atlanta) cannot recieve CBS and NBC in HD. I will keep you informed.
wlbandy 01-11-10, 01:27 PM I live in West Cobb, I get CBS on 73.10 and NBC on 73.30. ABC on 98.3 and Fox on 98-804.
It has changed twice in last week for ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox HD.
Think they are trying to make us give up using QAM Tuner(Have to rescan each time I have a problem).

I wonder if they are just shuffling things around in preparation for the all digital/extra HD channels?
wlbandy 01-11-10, 04:43 PM Could be. I have had new channels since August.

Same here (Dallas, Ga). Thanks for the update. Hope he/you get back to us with positive news.
Got the letter today saying the digital migration is taking affect on March 9th for central Fulton. No firm deadlines on HD but the letter says the transition will allow for more HD channels in the future. My zip is 30318.
uvatexn 01-12-10, 10:39 AM 2 things:
Good to hear about WOM for 30318. I too am in 30318 but did not receive the postcard. However it's possible I'll get it today (or worse I'm in a different zone so it'll be even longer).
Also I rescanned my non-cablebox TV last night and found all the HD channels listed higher up in the thread w/no problems. Just more of a pain than anything else.
uvatexn 01-12-10, 10:54 AM Actually, just talked to the wife and turns out we never bothered to get the mail (it's always junk these days anyway).
I did look at the map someone sent back on 10/26) and 30318 & our Comcast zone (A1?) is roughly the same geographic area.
Same here (Dallas, Ga). Thanks for the update. Hope he/you get back to us with positive news.
The cable guy just left and we still cannot recieve NBC and CBS in HD! His only explanation was that head end in Vinings was not sending out 73.10 and 73.30 yet. So I'll just keep re-scanning until it shows up.
slowbiscuit 01-12-10, 12:54 PM Well, that's not correct - I'm on the Vinings headend in S. Cobb and receive them on channel 73 just fine (on both my dual-tuner Myth box and on my plasma and LCD). Do you have any other HDTVs, or can you check with a neighbor who does? It might just be your tuner. Or perhaps the signal level coming in, but I'm sure the tech checked that.
I have three new-ish TV's (1-2 years old at best) in the house and they're all no longer picking up NBC/CBS in HD. Rescanned several times. Shame.

Did the tech hook up an analyzer to see what was coming in on the cable? Look for a seriously degraded QAM carrier at 73, or whether the .10 and .30 services appear in his analyzer. If both tests look good then my guess is there's something about the service table that is upsetting some tuners. But you'll need a real analyzer to get to that determination.

Yea, he'd also need a real tech to think to do all this, yuck, yuck, yuck. .
Yes the tech brought a meter to hook up to the cable output where the set was, but he w for as checking for the signal for the internet which was above 50. However I used AT&T for internet. I have a Vizio 32" and I immediately re-scanned and 73 didnot appear.
I also have a Windows 7 HTPC and have added 73.10 and 73.30 and these channels do not show up, and finally I have a PHD 250 Tuner box and when you enter channel 73 nothing happens.
Slowbiscuit, I just assumed that Douglasville and Dallas are served by the Vinings head-end, but I don,t know for sure. I will just keep up my daily scan until NBC and CBS HD return.
bjg2222 01-13-10, 12:27 AM I'm in 30309 right in Midtown, and I just got a letter about WOM yesterday in the mail (ironically, it was shortly after I had posted something in this forum asking about it...). It says March 9, 2010 for "customers in our Central Fulton service area."
Also, I do receive CBS & NBC on 73.
hudsonmike 01-13-10, 09:02 AM This morning everything went back to "normal" for me. (Midtown, 30309)
getting 2.1, 5.1, 11.1 and 46.1 respectively (nothing on 73 or 98). Just like good ole 2009
uvatexn 01-13-10, 09:23 AM Checked the mail and no WOM postcard for me in middle-30318 (Comcast zone A2 or A6...not sure which one). Argh.
wlbandy 01-13-10, 09:24 AM Same for me in West Cobb(30064). All back to Normal this morning.

I rescanned after seeing this, I actually have both. I get the 2.1, 5.1, etc like they're supposed to be, but the channel's also there on 73.10 & 73.30! (I'm in 30309 as well)
Still no NBC and CBS in HD in Douglasvile! Notjing on 11.1, 46.1, 73.10, 73.30,108.10 or 108.30!
Devil98 01-15-10, 10:02 AM Still no NBC and CBS in HD in Douglasvile! Notjing on 11.1, 46.1, 73.10, 73.30,108.10 or 108.30!
ALBIG,
I've had NBC and CBS on 73.30 and 73.10 respectively since this topic popped up in this forum. ABC is still 2.1, and I haven't checked Fox, but it was on 5.something last time I checked. I'm in 30135 off of Stewart Mill Rd.
Seems like their entire system is a mess. I've been waiting for a week to receive my new DVR, but it can't come soon enough. For some reason, the guide is not integrating with the DVR properly on my DCT 6416, and if I try to record something I started watching live, it targets the next program in the future for recording but only pauses the current program until the buffer fills and it starts playing on its own. Sufficiently annoying that I dusted off a VCR for the first time in almost a year.
Good luck,
Jason
Devil98 01-15-10, 05:52 PM Crud. Just called Comcast to check the shipping status on the DVR. The CS rep that took my call last week, in addition to being friendly and eager to help, apparently is very forgetful. She left great notes about the call, referencing the order to ship a new DVR to me. Buuuut... she never actually processed the order and shipped me anything. Suck. Another week of trying to keep a clean and empty DVR HDD to be ready for the swap.

You're way too nice to Comcast. I swapped mine back with 15 episodes of "The View" on board. :D

Thanks a LOT. I spit out my drink.
ckb1978 01-16-10, 12:19 PM The 15th has come and gone and no WoM rool out here in Lilburn (30047) Spoke to 3 different departments at Comcast and no one has any idea what I am talking about. Grr.
slowbiscuit 01-16-10, 12:57 PM No big surprise to hear that, they've repeatedly missed announced dates for the migration here.
I thought I would post this up as I just finished programming the guide. Some of my channels are a little different than the list posted previously. I have included both lists for reference.
with few exceptions this is the differences:
Main channel #
37 = 84
38=85
39=103
40=104
41=93
42=80
43=82
44=83
86=100
I could not get it to format properly in the window so I have attached a word document. I have it saved in excel so if anyone wants it let me know. It is easier to manipulate, but you can easily cut and paste into excel from the word doc.
Also the WOM conversion has taken place here. I now have all of the WOM HD channels on my HDDVR from Comcast.

I think only we call it the "World of More". :) It's the official name for the new channels, migrated channels. However, internally Comcast technicians call it the "digital upgrade". If you call to see when your area gets the "digital upgrade", they will know what you are talking about -- since so many customers need the free digital adapters. Then, after the digital upgrade, the extra HD channels get added -- usually in a week or so.
I too am just off of Stewart Mill Road, however I am using basic cable and I should be able to recieve NBC and CBS in HD. At least I saw the Minnesota-Dallas game in HD. I'll keep trying

Thanks for posting this. Was able to find four channels in-the-clear that I definitely would watch.
LedHead69 01-20-10, 11:56 AM I'm in Norcross 30071 and was told mid Nov. that it would be Jan 15th for me . . . of course, originally it was suppose to be October 15th, so I'm not 100% confident they will hit the new date, but seems reasonable.
Yup, 15th came and went . . . no new HD channels :( . . . in fact, still have all of the analog channels (checked this morning) except for Cartoon Network, which is the only thing they DID switch in October when they were suppose to do them all.
titans4ever 01-21-10, 02:48 AM Streaming music is coming to a cable box near you soon see the link below:

I wonder if comcast's purchase of NBC/Universal would mean more HD content on demand?

I really hope they get off their ass and finish S. Cobb soon. Speedweeks are coming up and watching SpeedTV in SD sucks.

I am on the South Cobb headend, and the drop-dead date is supposed to be January 26. Or at least I'm getting a lot of mailings about how I had better have digital equipment due to the transition as of that date. I think they even had some kind of event in the Cumberland Mall area for people to get equipment.
So we're either going to get our goodies, or they're going to look stupid. Oh wait, they don't care about looking stupid... hehe.
ubercool 01-23-10, 02:09 AM I'm in 30324 near Midtown and have only received the letter that says they're planning to upgrade the system to digital and that customers will need a new digital adapter. No date was given for the transition, except "in the coming weeks," but since another poster reported March 9 for Central Fulton, I'm hopeful it's soon.
Now I need to score a DCX3400 myself so I can record Spartacus. :D
Joejeep 01-23-10, 11:30 AM I have yet to receive anything in the mail from Comcast, though from talking to them a month or so ago, my area is not due for the upgrade until April. Anyone else in 30032 receive any mailers?

Yay, looks like they ARE getting close here - the crawl line is running across some of the analog channels now saying that they're going away in Jan. 2010 - we'll see.
I have been unable to tune NBC or CBS in HD since January 4th. I last recieved them on 11.1 and 46.1 and when I tried to tune t As I mentioned earlier anhem on 73.10 and 73.30 I was unsucessful.
I have had two cable guys and they bring in their trusty meters and confirm that I am not recieving them. Their supervisor's explanation is that CBS and NBC are not providing the proper signal to the head ethe Super Bowlnd. As I mentioned earlier I am in the 30135 area code and some of you in this area code do recieve NBC and ABC in HD. In fact I just re-scanned and I can recieve the NBA channels, 95-1 thru 95-21, so go figure! And guess what the Super Bowl will be telecast on CBS, so may be I can view it in glorius HD!
ubercool 01-25-10, 11:00 AM I just got off the phone with the Comcast rep. As expected he was not helpful. Says he can't tell what model DVR each office stocks. Tells me the closest Comcast office is Malone Dr. in Chamblee, and I'm in Midtown.
I'm googling for their office locations now. Someone mentioned Cascade Rd., but he could not locate that office. Does anyone know where that is?
I will post a complete FAQ for this WOM change so others will be able to find needed information quickly. :)
Devil98 01-25-10, 12:09 PM I'm googling for their office locations now. Someone mentioned Cascade Rd., but he could not locate that office. Does anyone know where that is?
:)
Cascade Rd. is west of the perimeter, and not so convenient to MidTown. I called a few weeks ago, got a CS rep to tell me that my local service center wasn't showing any shortages, so they "should" have a new DCX is stock for me. Of course they didn't, but I called back and they shipped one to me. Not surprisingly, it ended up shipping from the same store that had none when I went in person. Just try one store and then ask them to ship a DCX to you (if they won't agree to ship one up front).
On a side note, what kind of modern business can possibly survive without any sort of inventory tracking capability? Seems like the only way Comcast can identify and account for a DVR/Cable box is to plug it in and start billing someone for it. Until that point, it's invisible. I understand that they're a service company, but that's just pitiful.

Inventory tracking capability != provision of tracking information to the parties who need it to tell you what you need to know. I mean, that would be, uh, customer service. Heh.
Yeah, it's pitiful. But based on my experience with Comcast Atlanta, all those numbers and, like, written things might confuzzle a lot of the front-line reps. Leave it to a few of them, and you could order a DVR, and have a box with rabbit ears arrive... or a coat hanger... :)

Thanks I didn't get a chance to go today but will go to Chamblee on Friday.
You mean the same company that, when I called, couldn't identify my account using my Comcast phone number? Morons.

As of this morning in South Cobb, I can't see channels past 26. It's nothing but snow. I previously had the crawl across the top stating channels wouldn't be available after Jan 2010. Don't see any new HD channels as of yet. Hopefully they will be soon now.

I am also on the South Cobb headend. No new HD channels here yet either, including on the CableCard-equipped TivoHD, which simply says "Searching for signal on: Cable In" if tuned to the new-channels-to-be.
Hey, is anyone in South Cobb having trouble with channel 856 (AMC HD?) TivoHD says I've got a solid signal, but no picture, no sound. Used to work fine though it has been at least a couple of weeks since I've dialed the channel in. Comcast Motorola DVR says "this channel should be available shortly."
807 TBS also appears to have gone silent.

I just checked my channels and I'm missing the same channels as well as 841 TNT and I get the same message on the screen.

Thanks for the reply. 841 TNT HD is doing the same here as well.
All - I just got off the phone with Comcast. They "hit" my Comcast DVR and not only are 807, 841, and 856 back, but it looks like I've got the full World of More HD lineup coming in.
I have to poke at the TivoHD to make it pull guide data and such, but it looks like it's getting the new channels too. I don't know if this is spontaneous or if they sent a signal to the CableCard as well. She didn't say, I didn't ask.
Still, it would appear that the South Cobb headend has joined World of More. Yay!

I might suggest power-cycling the equipment. I think the channel maps get re-downloaded if you do so.
If you are using a Tivo, you have to change your cable channel lineup to get guide data for the new channels - however, you should be able to manually dial in the new channels regardless to see what's there. On my Tivo, before it was working, dialing 843 (FXHD) would boot me over to channel 1. After it started working, dialing it pulled the channel up. I didn't change the channel lineup until after this.

Tried all that neither the TIVO or Comcast DVR are updating. Guess I'll just wait to see what the tech can do.

Hello I live in the 30360 zip area no hd 11.1 46.1 channels lose them about a month ago my dad lives in the 30319 same thing. All the other QAM channels work fine. In my area it has gone all digital, only analog channels 2-29. I got the digital hd package for my tivo put I like to see some hd on the other digital tv, bring back 46.1 11.1 please.
Later

slowbiscuit 01-27-10, 11:06 AM I can confirm that all the new channels are working on my Tivo with the World of More lineup. Vinings headend in S. Cobb area. Nothing other than NBC and CBS were moved around on QAM, my Myth box still gets all the locals in HD. All channels over 26 in analog are gone now, but I'm happy to see all the new HD channels.
I would expect to see all the expanded basic channels encrypted on QAM soon, but I'm so over SD now that it won't matter much.
Good job Comcast, even if you were 3 months late.

cj523, slowbiscuit, if you guys get channel 109, are you getting its HD equivalent (822)? I am not. Says "Not Authorized" on the Comcast DVR. Called them about it yesterday and they said it was a network problem. No ETA as to resolution, of course.

Cyclone you are not alone. I'm in30135 using QAM and I still do not recieve NBC, CBS,and the 45 channels in HD. I have tried to add all the different channel location for these four channels without sucess!
tmajoratl 01-28-10, 12:37 AM Anyone have any idea when the World of More is coming to 30316?
Thanks!
slowbiscuit 01-28-10, 07:34 AM cj523, slowbiscuit, if you guys get channel 109, are you getting its HD equivalent (822)? I am not. Says "Not Authorized" on the Comcast DVR. Called them about it yesterday and they said it was a network problem. No ETA as to resolution, of course.
Same situation here, that's the only channel that I can't get. I guessed that it was because Comcast didn't have something set right, sounds like that's what it is. If that's the only problem after the big switch, I can't complain.
For those with QAM tuners in recently migrated area, it looks like they replicated all the expanded basic channels into the 37 to 40 channel range, while still present in the 80 to 115 range. So my TV is pulling in like 250 digital channels in the clear now, but as I said before, these will probably all be encrypted soon.

Just read this article . . . encryption IS coming sooner than later . . . in fact, it's already there in Seattle and Portland:

Here in the Chamblee-Dunwoody area, I'm getting channel 822 fine; I'm connected to the Stone Mountain headend. So, I think it's probably a problem at the headend in Cobb county.

I had the NBC and CBS HD just fine until Thursday, then they disappeared. They were previously at 11.1 and 46.1. I have read through this forum and tried all the channels mentioned, done several rescans, still nothing. I have gone through every channel detected and they just don't appear anywhere.

I'm inclined to agree. I'm going to bug Comcast via an alternate channel about it when the problem has been around for a full week, since they still haven't corrected it.
MixMasterE 02-01-10, 05:03 PM Is everyone getting their HD channels in Marietta on Comcast? How many hours of HD programming will the HD-DVR store? Can you record two shows at once while watching a third? Or do you have to be watching one of the two shows or another recorded show? Are there any HD channels with noise lines? I have a couple with Charter and the installer actually told me it was the "network feed" and there was nothing they could do.
The HD line-up looks pretty good.
Thanks! :p
I live in Smyrna now and have to have Charter, but I'm moving in a few weeks to Marietta and swiching to Comcast. I had a lot of billing problems at first, but I've never had any major issues with channels or Internet service with Charter.
Comcast is charging $30 for installation and wanted another $30 for Internet installation on the same day. I thought that was ridiculous to charge that when I know how easy it is to install a cable modem. I decided to not use them for Internet just for this reason. The rep also told me there wasn't a "Double Play" savings and that I'd still be paying the same for cable regardless of using them for Internet.

Have to be watching one of the two shows or another recorded show, I believe. It's a 2-tuner device, not a 3-tuner. To record 2 unique shows while watching a third in-broadcast show, you would need a third tuner.
Can't speak to the other questions.

I read that Moxi has a 3 tuner HD-DVR now . . . also have "Moxi Mates" (media extenders) that you can stream live TV to now as well as recorded . . . seems like that would save on additional outlet fees . . .

The internet bill is $15 less per month if you have cable with them too, so your overall bill could be less with both services from them.

I don't know which TV package you want, but I see CC is offering on their web site at Comcast.com a TV/Internet double package of Digital Preferred and Performance Internet (16/2) for a promotional price of $80 per month for the first six months. After promotion ends, the monthly price goes up to $118. I don't think the promotion price includes stb and/or modem monthly rental charges, and I don't know about the installation charges.
If you are getting the top TV package and Performance Internet tier (16/2), I would try another sales representative using the local CC number (404-266-2278) and ask them to waive the installation fee, at least the Internet fee since you're willing to self-install. If the first one you reach doesn't give, try another. The higher TV tier you're getting (if you really want it), the more leverage you have, since the payment/income stream is more beneficial to them than installation charges.
If you think you'll be using CC Internet for at least a couple of years, then you may want to consider buying your own modem rather than renting one, particularly if you don't think you'll ever be using Comcast digital voice service. If you just plan to use the basic Internet speed tiers, then you should buy the cheap modems at Best Buy or Amazon. If you want the higher speed tiers which D3 offers, then you should buy Motorola SB6120, which is a D3 modem that will have very low technology obsolescence risk for many years to come, as D3 platform will not be upgraded for a long, long time. Best Buy used to have them on sale for $85 but now it's up to $100, and Amazon list them at $90. At Best Buy, ask to them to reduce the price to $85 or ask them if they have special promo price for new CC customers.

If he only has "Basic Cable", he will not get 73. It is filtered
out because it was in the range of channels that was not
made available to customers that didn't purchase the
Extended basic package.
My understanding is that Comcast has to provide the local channels, i.e. ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS along with the public broadscast channels in high deffintion. I beleive this is part of the FCC directive.
MixMasterE 02-02-10, 08:57 AM Thank you all for your wonderful advice. I was going to purchase my own modem instead of paying $5/month to lease one. I tried Clear out here at my Smyrna apt. and it didn't work last week. I was getting a whopping 600 Kpbs of download speed which as you know, is horrible. I'm going to try them again when I move for Internet since it might be closer to one of their towers. They have a 2 year agreement though that the agent failed to tell me. But, they are going to let me get out of it if it doesn't work. At least CC doesn't have service agreements, the speeds will be much higher and hopefully more reliable. I'll try the advice to ask them if I can self-install. Hopefully, just because I'm a woman they won't assume it's too difficult for me.lol. I just installed a 500 gig internal harddrive.
I like the idea of not having to upgrade in awhile, so the D3 modem sounds good. You guys are great.

Unfortunately I do not believe that they are mandated to supply the HD channels in the clear, just a given signal from the station. So in WSB's case, channel 3 would suffice. This will probably change and there have been disputes filed about the HD signals with the FCC in other areas, but I don't think the directive says 'all signals', just one for a given (sub)channel.
Are you on a basic-only sub? If so, channel 73 is probably trapped out as cmunroe said. I would escalate this with Comcast and see what they say.

Slowbuscuit I just looked at the "Limited" lineup from Comcast and it calls for the HD channels of NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC,GPB, and WALT in addition to the lower channels 2-31 and some Spanish=speaking channels. Maybe there are planning to move the HD channels again but I still recieve ABC, FOX, GPB, and WALT and WUPA in HD. I'll just keep re-scanning and maybe someday it will show up.
By the way I did send an e-mail to "ask comcast"

I got the same message here in Chamblee-Dunwoody. CC has been upgrading their I-guide from A25 to A28 in other markets, and it is finally arriving here in Atlanta.
My DCX 3200 firmware is 22.33, but I've seen other people posting in BBR as having firmware 22.35 on their DCX 3400 in other markets. I'm curious as what DCX 3400 firmware other folks here in Atlanta have. The firmware info is in the cable box setup in the guide menu. I hope the guide update will also include the latest firmware for the DCX boxes.
I got the same message others are seeing. This is the link it directs you to: http://www.comcast.com/guide/
I was hoping this was a harbinger of us finally getting the World of More channels, but a menu upgrade seems more likely. If it does in fact bring the features LedHed listed, it would be more than welcome.

My experience with the executive level customer service, whether it be the headquarters phone, e-mail or direct support at BBR, has been excellent as well. They are usually very effective to get the problems resolved, as their edicts have much greater urgency than whatever tier one customer service can do, particularly for problems in the plant/headend. As a matter of fact, yesterday my HSI upload speeds were cut in half because the upstream digressed from D2 to D1.1. I posted on CC direct forum on BBR yesterday. Today, viola - problem solved.

My modem routinely jumps between D2.0 to D1.1 . . . I'm (and I think all of in ATL are now) in a D3.0 area, so there are several upstream channels, some of them 2.0, some 1.1 . . . it's not uncommon to be moved from 1 to another channel depending on traffic load and RF performance.

As far as I know, all upgrades of plant to D3 include upgrade of upstream to D2, as D2 is required to get upload speeds greater than 5 megs.
Since the D3 upgrade, my upstream has always been D2, except for a couple of occasions when HSI is disconnected. Fluctuation between D2 and D1.1 is not normal, at least for my connection, and you should contact CC when upstream channel has digressed to D1.1. The issue is really resyncing the modem upstream channel with CMTS, when there's disconnection. The two times I contact CC direct support in BBR about the issue, he offered no excuses or caveats about my not getting D2 upstream. He quickly had the upstream reverted back to D2.
Since I switched to 50/10 tier, my upload speeds are cut in half to 5 megs whenever my upstream goes to D1.1. If upstream channel varies with the traffic, conditions as you say, then CC shouldn't be offering the 50/10 tier as the 10 meg upload speeds require constant D2.

They have to leave at least 1 D1.1 channel for those poor souls without a D2.0 modem . . . D2.0 would be, as you said, twice as fast as normally (but not required) a 6.4 Mhz wide channel is used as opposed to the max allowed 3.2 Mhz channel in D1.1 . . . D2.0 could be even faster if they use the high modulation allow in D2.0, as much as 30Mbps in a single upstream channel. D3.0 calls for channel bonding, minimum of 4 channels, in BOTH the downstream and upstream . . . not all CMTSs support channel bonding in the upstream and not all MSOs do 4 channels, but maybe 2 or 3. Some MSOs will dedicate 4 channels in both directions, bonding the downstream and "sharing" the 4 upstreams . . . hence the load balancing and sometimes getting pushed to D1.1. Of course, you need a D3.0 modem for any of that.
You being a 50/10 customer, you should ALWAYS be on a D2.0 channel until at least upstream bonding is enabled. Me, I'm on the 12/2 plan with a D2.0 modem, so I'm sure I'm not restricted to roam to a D1.1 channel, but you should be.

commodore_dude 02-10-10, 03:04 PM My parents finally got a message on their cable box about channel changes coming in 30092, but deleted it before I could get over there to see specifics... hopefully around the same date.
Hail fellow Comcasters! I've been on D* for several years, down in Stockbridge, but come 26 Feb I will be moving to S. Cobb Drive (30082) & into Comcast territory. I have only read the last few pages of this magnificent thread & thus, I have a few questions.
It would appear that the S Cobb Headend has been upgraded to the WOM from what little I have read in this thread & the number of HD channels when I check on the comcast homepage. However, how is the quality?
I have two LcOS Sony HD sets, 1 60 & 1 42 inch. The 42in set supports the earlier cable card standard. Is that a viable option for the S Cobb area.
I understand that the HD DVR rental is 15.95 (I will be signing up for the Premier package at the introductory price of 89 bucks), but is a HD Tivo a viable option?
No matter what type of cable box I get, is it viable to split the coax coming out of the wall, so that one cable goes to the box & one cable goes to the TV directly for the HD locals which I understand are clear QAM?
I will miss D* but at least I will be able to get some decent internet speeds so I kinda can't wait. TIA

1. Quality coming out of the South Cobb headend is fine in my book.
2. Don't know re: the Sony.
3. TivoHD is a viable option. Running with one myself.
4. Can't see why you couldn't split the cable.

Splitting is no problem as long as the signal levels are high enough . . . typically, for 256QAM, you want to see between -12 and +15 dbmv . . . each 2 way splitter takes about 3.5 db, so as long as you have at least -8 at the wall, you should be ok

The message we had on our box here in 30092 had to do with the late Feb. update to the guide mentioned previously. Nothing to do with the WOM channels unfortunately.

Ditto what he said, I'm also running a Tivo HD and IMO it's the best way to go. If you have more than a couple of outlets in use I would recommend having Comcast install a whole house 8-way powered amp when they do the install, then you'll probably not have any signal issues.

Thanks to you & the others for your quick replies. Truly the power of AVS is its users. :D
I will be moving to an apartment so a 8-way amp is probably a little over kill but the Tivo option (I would take it that this means cable card) sounds the way to go.

ABC and FOX HD moved to the 98.00 range when I re-scanned this morning. Last evening they were on 2.1 and 5.1 respectively. I still cannot recieve NBC and CBS in HD since January 4th. My understanding is that post-digital conversion (project Cavalry), those are no longer necessary since Expanded Basic is digital & encrypted.
A tech found two of them in the box on the side of my house that he said could have been causing problems with digital channel problems I reported. He removed them.
I guess that they could be filtering out the QAM frequencies that were assigned to your local HD broadcast signals.

They have not moved channel-wise (they've both been on 98 for a long time and are still there today), but Comcast has messed up the PSIP data (again) which maps them to 2-1 and 5-1 and its missing now. So they'll show up as 98-3 and 98-804 on the Vinings headend.

slowbiscuit 02-14-10, 01:49 PM People with limited basic subs will probably not get them since they're on channel 73 now, which is trapped out. I get them just fine but I have a digital preferred sub.
You'll have to call Comcast and see if they can get the trap removed from your line, and/or ask them to move the channels above the trapped out range (80 and above I think). Good luck, it was a dumb move to put them there.

I tried to pick up the new DCX3400 at the Chamblee office on Malone and they said they did not have it. The only way to get it is via the starter kit, which I ordered but came too late for the Superbowl. :(
BTW, for those of you needing an additional push, the quality of the DCX3400 is even better than the DCX3200, which I already thought was pretty good. :)
Also, I just received the Comcast letter and 30324 is going WOM on March 9 as well. Woohoo! :p

cracker 52 02-14-10, 06:10 PM People with limited basic subs will probably not get them since they're on channel 73 now, which is trapped out. I get them just fine but I have a digital preferred sub.

slowbiscuit,
Thanks for the reply. I actually have the top tier package with DCX 3200 box. But I was curious about what I could get on QAM, since some people on this board and BBR have problems getting the HD channels in question. I was wondering if the problem may be caused by issues at the headend. I asked you since you're connected to Vinnings headend, whereas I'm to Stone Mountain. The poster at BBR who's not getting those same channels is in Buckhead. So it's strange how some people are able to get NBC and CBS HD channels via QAM, while others can't, even those who have the full package like me.

Ubercool,
How is the quality of DCX 3400 better than DCX 3200? Is it the picture or what?
Thanks.
Anybody know if Comcast Atlanta has plans to add BBC America HD at some point? Does Comcast carry it anywhere, for that matter?

The OP might be referring to the DCH3200. The only difference between the DCX 3200 and the 3400 is the DVR.

Yes. I knew one difference between DCX3400 and DCX3200 is that the former has a DVR. I was curious as to whether there are any other differences. You're probably correct to assume he made a typo and meant DCH instead of DCX.
Well tomorrow I will sign up for Comcast cable & internet service. I do not plan to ever have a land line again in my life so VOIP is of no interest to me whatsoever. I will be moving to the 30038 zip code, which according to the comcast page is a WOM area.
Would it be better to purchase my own cable modem (what is the modem that is preferred here on the board) or just pay the 5 bucks month.
I have 3 HDTV's but because of the 15 dollar charge (& no multi room option yet <--- is that correct?) I will only get one HD DVR to start. However, because I am moving to a WOM are, I will still be required to have some sort of box for the other 2 TV's right? What is that box & what is the monthly fee; I can't seem to find that info on comcasts' web site.

You can get a non-DVR HD set-top box out of them for $7.95/month, I think. I also believe you can get some kind of non-HD set-top box out of them free of charge... for some reason I want to say you can get 2 of those. Someone else may comment further and correct me.
They have a $3.95 fee for additional Digital HD outlets. I don't know, though, whether they apply this to outlets associated with a set-top box.
I am in WOM space, and have a Comcast Motorola HD DVR and a TivoHD. I pay $15.95 for the DVR, and I pay a $3.95 additional outlet fee for the Tivo.

You get 1 non-HD STB included with service. You do have to pay the additional outlet fee for every extra STB, so if you want an extra HD STB you have to pay the HD fee + the extra outlet fee. Yes, it sucks. You can also get 2 free DTAs which will only let you get the locals, expanded basic SD channels and a few others.
lovswr, if I was you I'd buy the modem, it will pay for itself quickly. The Motorola SB6120 is the one to get, it's DOCSIS 3.0 compliant and can be had for under $100 at a variety of retailers.

So let me get this straight. 3 HDTV's in different rooms will be 7.95 EACH!! for High Definition service. That's highway robbery! :( Ok, I knew I would have to pay "something for every STB, but HD should be per account, not per device.
Ok,I will seek out that modem forthwith, good sir!
Also, as apparently there are retail outlets here in the Metro Atlanta area, can I just go pick up the STB's. I mean, I'm moving to an apartment, there should be no need for a truck roll, should there?
Joejeep 02-16-10, 09:35 AM Lovswr,
I'm in 30032 and according to the Comcast website, I have already undergone the digital transition (if you look at the channel line up for my zip code). However, I can assure you that is not the case. I'd double check with them to see if 30038 has actually transitioned yet or not. Last I heard, 30032 was in April. So far I've received no notification by mail or telephone call. I did finally see an ad on Sci Fi saying it was coming, but not sure if that was localized to my zip or if they are airing it everywhere.

Truth is that the rollout is by headend, not by zip code, and getting precise info out of Comcast Atlanta as to a specific address is near impossible. Like you, "my address" had the new lineup according to the website for months before they actually converted my headend. They even sent a tech to my house to find out "why I wasn't getting the right channels" because they couldn't figure out what I should be seeing based on my location.
Joejeep 02-16-10, 09:47 AM LOL, that's Comcast for you. They seem so disorganized. Apparently, they only work on the transition when they have "extra" techs to deal with it. So what exactly is a headend, and how do you find out what headend serves your area? Are they related to the local comcast offices?

From the land of Wikipedia, because I kind of get the idea but can't explain it well myself: "A cable television headend, a master facility for receiving television signals for processing and distribution over a cable television system."
I don't know how many headends Comcast Atlanta has, but I found out from looking at an old work order for a tech visit that my headend is identified as "South Cobb." You might be able to find out from the folks on the phone but... I dunno...
I suppose the simplest way to think of it would be the equipment facility that is at the other end of your cable line. Definitely not the "local Comcast office."
Joejeep 02-16-10, 09:54 AM Ok gotcha. I'll look at my Comcast folder and see if I can find out what mine is. Of course, not sure it will help. If I call and ask when my headend will go through the migration, I'd imagine they'll think I'm speaking Greek!
Joejeep 02-16-10, 09:55 AM Ok, I'm South Dekalb
Ok, I'm South Dekalb
Someone else in the thread may know something about a potential drop-dead date for that headend.
For what it's worth, I started getting mailings from Comcast about how I was going to lose channels on Jan 26 if I didn't have digital equipment by then, and that was the date they converted the headend. Based on that and what others have said, I am thinking that if they start trying to scare you into new equipment, it's gonna happen, and if not, it's on the "they'll get to it" list.
Joejeep 02-16-10, 10:02 AM Well so far, no mailings. Months ago I was able to order the free digital boxes, but that was because I would periodically check the website to see if I was eligible, not from any contact I received from Comcast. At first it wouldn't let me order them, but one day it let me. April is when CS told me it would happen in my area, so maybe that will still happen. Should be getting some notification soon if that's the case, I would think. BTW, did you notice any degradation in the HD quality once the transition went through? I'm hearing they are squeezing 3 HD channels per whatever vs 2 before the transition.

I started getting mailings about a month before the date, so I would expect the same in your case.
I have not noticed any degradation in HD quality via my TivoHD, though I have noticed at least one channel with an intermittently glitchy signal. Could be completely unrelated to the transition.
Joejeep 02-16-10, 10:11 AM Be sure to check your connections in the house and to the house. I've had intermittent glitchy channels before, and fixed them by tightening the connections, esp to the outside of the house.

Actually, the Cavalry transition project is done at the headend and neighborhood plant/nodes. I live in the Chamblee-Dunwoody area (30319) and I'm connected to the Stone Mountain headend. I got the WoM channels on October 17th of last year, a couple of days after the official transition date of 10/15. My father, who lives near Northlake Mall, is also connected to Stone Mountain headend, but he didn't get the WoM channels until early December. And the above poster who lives in S. Dekalb county is also connected to the Stone Mountain headend.
There's only about three or four headends in the entire Atlanta metro area. (The ones I know of are Vinnings, Stone Mountain and one somewhere in south Atlanta suburbs, plus maybe one or two others.) If it was just a matter of digital transitioning at the headend only, the new HD channels would have come a lot quicker for a lot more people than what has occurred, as the Cavalry project started in late 2008 in northern Fulton county.
If you can't get a straight answer from the first CSR about when WoM will come to your area, try contacting other CSRs until you get one who actually knows how to get the information. Many CSRs have no clue, but some are actually quite good.

What about DCX-3200s? I asked for a second HD box, non-DVR, and they tried to give me the older Moto box that doesnt' have HDMI. I would ideally like to have one 3400 and one 3200, but am currently stuck with the older DVR.

I think they call those "Super Headends" . . . the local headends are where all the coax/fiber originates/terminates and where the edge equipment resides (CMTS, edge QAMs for VOD and digital broadcast, etc . . .) the super headends have things like all the VOD storage, encoders, satellite dishes, etc . . . and stream everything to the local headends. The WOM is rolling out per local headends (the "letter""number" codes referred to earlier (mine is "G1")) . . . part of "Calvary" is analog reclamation, which hasn't happened everywhere yet . . . another part is the D3.0 support (4 DS channels instead of just 1), which seems to have happened everywhere (I speaking about ATL of course) already. The reclamation has to happen before they can add the extra HD channels in WOM. This also requires additional edge QAMs to pump the new digital channels since obviously the analog channels are pumped out with other equipment. The delay MAY (and I have NO IDEA) be due to procuring and deploying these additional edge QAMs . . . with schedules based off of marketing (where would they get the most bang for the buck, as in which areas will more likely pay for HD channels, and which areas would give them the most problem if they cut analog (ie low tech customers, older or non native English speaking areas, etc . . .))
cracker 52 02-17-10, 05:52 PM Yes. I believe the "local headends" are also called hubs, at least that's what the a couple of local CC techs labeled them as. I'm connected to the Chamblee hub on Malone Drive in Chamblee. (It was originally a Scripp-Howard cable system that was acquired by CC in the late nineties.) But, I have a couple of friends in the Brookhaven (swanky) area who got the WoM at least a couple of weeks later than I did (I live off of Ashford-Dunwoody, just south of I-285), and they also are connected to the Chamblee hub. So, I guess even at the hub, installation of the edge QAMs and other necessary equipment will take time to install to cover the hub's entire territory.

Non HDMI?? I gotta say as a new customer coming from 10 years of being a DBS subscriber, this is not confidence inspiring. Not to mention the 232 I gotta pay on 6 March when I get Digital Essentials, 20/4 internet, the HD DVR & the 'professional installation of screwing in coax to the wall ' does not give me a warm & fuzzy either.
Does Comcast Atlanta support cable cards? One of my HDTV sets has a slot for the older 1 way card & I guess now would be the opportune time to put it to good use.

Here's what I did back in mid December: Called the Comcast number and requested an additional DVR. Received it via prepaid UPS in about three days and it was a new 3400. Then returned my old DVR to the local office. Start reading around post #4204. Worked then - don't know if it'll still work now.

Thanks, I may give that a try. Last time I talked to a Comcast CSR (maybe 2 weeks ago), she said that multi-room DVR was "on its way" and that Comcast should be getting a lot more DCX-3400s because they support that function. I took her comment with a HUGE grain of salt but man would I love to have multi-room DVR!!

Yeah, I know, non-HDMI. Having been forced to drop my beloved DirecTV by the very large trees behind my new house, I was bummed just to have to switch to Comcast in the first place. When he handed me the box and said it was non-HDMI I was kind of incredulous and asked "they still make those??"
As for cablecards, no idea but I thought by law those had to be available to subscribers for $2.99 or something. Worth calling and asking.

Yes, Comcast supports CableCard. The first one is free and each additional one is $1.50/mo.

I've had Comcast HD DVRs for more than 5 years now, all with HDMI, first in the Boston area and now in Marietta. I have 3 Moto 3416 DVRs and all have HDMI, so I'm not sure what you guys are talking about.
Also had DirecTV for a few years too, and especially now with the all digital upgrade and DOCSIS 3.0 HSI, Comcast has DirecTV beat hands down in almost every category.
Comcast Atlanta has had HDMI DVRs for awhile. However, they did try to stick me with a non-HDMI one back in '06. I told them to take it back and try again.

To be clear, the non-HDMI box that Comcast tried to give me was NOT a DVR box. It was just an HD box. It had DVI but not HDMI.
I can't wait to see if Comcast w/ WOM is actually on par with DirecTV because it is currently far worse all around - fewer HD channels, worse picture quality and craptastic equipment. The only advantage I see is Comcast On Demand, which much better than DirecTV's slow-downloading VOD service.
Well, the menu upgrade (A28?) is set to deploy in our area (downtown Decatur) Tues. or Wed. night. Has anyone else in town been transitioned yet? Any issues? What does it actually deliver?
Also, to those lamenting their inability to get a DCX3400: I've actually decided to hold off for a little bit based on several known issues with these new boxes that I've been reading about elsewhere on AVS. Apparently it's subject to a lot of HDMI handshake issues, inability to maintain resolution settings, and can cause problems with FF/RW (although this may be a function of the A28 update), not to mention disabling all firewire functionality if you use that. It's making my relatively reliable DCT3416 look pretty good.
So I'll wait for some of the bugs to be worked out before I pursue a DCX3400 in earnest.

I'm in 30071 and got a v-mail from CC saying my A28 upgrade would be between 1am and 3am (or so) on the 24th. Still no WOM though and still have analog channels, so seems it's not even close :( Would e a nice surprise to get the new channels with the new FW.
ChrisHman 02-22-10, 04:04 PM After emailing WGCL to ask if they would do the March Madness Multicast again this year I unfortunately received a reply that they would not (ending a 5+ year streak). In years past they would do 4 SD feeds (or 1 HD and 3SD), then last year it was rumored CBS was pressing for affiliates to do 2 games max, which WGCL did (1 hd, 1 SD). The email response stated the frantic game switching as a reason they are not multicasting this year, however I wonder if there was more pressure from corporate. Knowing they have the equipment already in place at the station it seems silly to not have at least one secondary channel setup.

Given that my area got WOM well before the firmware update, (I got the same phone call from Comcast, btw, mine hits tomorrow as well) I don't think there's a tie between the FW and the channel lineup. :(

At least the video quality will be better on the one channel they do show, but yeah, at least one secondary channel would have been nice.

I tend to agree with WGCL, the way the Networks switch games around, the feeds didn't do much for added enjoyment.
That said, I wish the tourney was on a network that could air all the games in full. Oh yeah, that exists, it's called Espn.
has anyone noticed weird 5.1 and poor HD PQ from WSB? The only ABC show I watch is LOST, but over the past few weeks i've noticed a slight audio high pitched-hiss/hum in the 5.1 track, and what sometimes sounds like a mixx that's "off". Also the PQ is terribly lackluster compared to most of the other stations.

This really isn't true at all. CBS only skipped around when a feed they were showing was a blowout, and then if a close game was coming down to the final minute or so they would switch to cover it. The other hour and forty five minutes of coverage was fairly locked in, blowout withstanding. I will be interested to see if multicasting stops nationwide, which would indicate corporate had a bigger hand in this than they led on. It frustrates me to know WGCL has the technology to do this, so no real added cost. At a minimum setting up 1 subchannel benefits the consumer since there are 2 games going on at a time even on the second weekend of action.
Uverse is finally available to me in Virginia Highlands so I can now get access to a ton more hd channels since Comcast doesn't seem to want to upgrade the city which still continues to amaze me, but hey they are no longer going to be getting my money.
Well I had an inauspicious start with Comcast today. I had scheduled, online, new service for 6 March. However, the tech called me today & "since he was in the apartment complex already" he was ready to come on by. He got a little rude when I informed him that I have not even signed the lease yet, & that my installation date is March 6th.
I called the customer service number & they straightened it out (I hope) but I am really not getting the warm & fuzzies about this.

I used Comcast's online chat last night. I ask a question about whether tomorrow's guide changes were related to the channel changes. The answer was no. I also asked about my zipcode and I was told that they could not give me the exact date but they had an advisory (whatever that is) that it would be middle of next month. I am in 30326, in the city.

I find it hard to find fault with them for calling you early and seeing if you were available. I'm positive the Techs don't know when your lease starts...

Ok then why make an appointment at all. If they are just gonna do "whomever, whenever". I don't know about you, but haphazzardly waiting for something to happen (or not as the case may be) is not my cup O' tea.

Yes, they've been "advised" to a;ways tell anyone who asks, 'it's the middle of next month' ;)
LedHead69 02-24-10, 08:46 AM Given that my area got WOM well before the firmware update, (I got the same phone call from Comcast, btw, mine hits tomorrow as well) I don't think there's a tie between the FW and the channel lineup. :(
Well, it's post "Wednesday the 24th, between 1am and 6am" and no upgrade :( . . . anyone else get it?

Na-na-na-na-na-nope, nope, nope.
Joejeep 02-24-10, 09:23 AM Me either. Another great job Comcast. Why won't Verizon bring FIOS to Atlanta????
Kills me that they got as far as phoning people en masse with a date and a time and then didn't deliver. My DVR shows no sign of having rebooted or anything else that would suggest that anything even attempted to touch it. This absolutely reeks of blunder. Whether technical or managerial, we'll never know.
