goldrich 06-29-06, 10:57 PM ... WBKI-DT appears to be off the air this afternoon. Perhaps it will come back with vastly improved power output, perhaps not ... the clock's ticking :)
Hi. I've been watching your posts regarding WBKI-DT. I just found out from a local engineer that the FCC just extended the deadline to July 7, by request of the federation of consulting engineers.
Steve
NashDigie 06-30-06, 12:25 AM I am really waiting to see if I can pick up WBKI-DT. I hope I can. I just learned something today about WNKY-DT ch 16 (NBC affiliate in Bowling Green, KY). I learned that they are, for now, going to stay on low power for awhile. How long? I don't know. They, too, are going to 1000kw. I was hoping to see if I could pick that channel up also. I noticed that Bowling Green, KY does not have a thread of its own. I thought this might be the right thread to share the news. Thats all for now. When WBKI-DT does go to full power, I will let you know if I can pick it up or not.
NashDigie signing off.

With the 1st falling on a Saturday over a "4 day" weekend, it would not surprise me if there was an automatic / defacto extension anyway.
WBKI seemed pretty sure that they'd be powered up before the first. I guess we'll know soon enough. I'm sure the recent waves of nasty weather hasn't exactly helped.
HDTVChallenged 07-01-06, 12:51 AM WBKI-DT went dark @ 5:30pm ... still dark as of this post.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A dalmation alert for WLKY-DT .... I'm suddenly getting a disturbing feeling that our pristine, full bandwidth 1080i CBS affiliate is about to join the ranks of the permanent multicasters on or about July 10 ... as if we really need more weather subchannels.

How about WAVE-DT  Looks like they are going to add another bandwidth sucking sub-channel.... http://www.thetubetv.com/
Old MTV all over again... Looks like stereo SD content.
I have never been able to pick up WBKI-DT. Let me know please when they have gone to full power.

Link is showing WAVE-DT is going to have a sub-channel broadcasting The Tube Music Network. I don't see any details other than TBA. That could be cool to record some digital video music on my Media Center PC :o

Old content is not going to be digital... :(
HDTVChallenged 07-02-06, 10:17 AM WAVE already has a HD (kinda, sorta) feed, SD feed, a local (if you get VERY generous) weather affiliate, and now a low-rent version of MTV?
If they are going to do this, one would hope that WAVE would replace the redundant 3.2 480i SD feed. As for content, "The Tube" (seen on WDKY-DT) is actually a refreshing change from what MTV has become. There be actual music videos ;) OTOH, the playlist isn't tremendously deep and it's sad to see snippets of concerts that have previously aired on HDNet destroyed by the conversion to low bandwidth 480i/Stereo ... And so it goes ... At least FOX's splicer system keeps 56.1 from any further degredation.
WBKI-DT is still dark ... but I've been getting bounces from WUSI-DT on ch19 for the last two days.
HDTVChallenged 07-03-06, 12:07 AM Just scanned my TV and lo and behold, 34-1 is now OTA!!!!!!
Looks good and signal is clean and sounds great here in the highlands.
Arrgh Scooped! ... Guess that's what I get for slumming over in HBO/USA land tonight. WBKI-DT does appear to be powered up, although the tropo is much stronger than "average" tonight, so it could be a "false positive."
They're still running 4:3 480i though... seems like a waste of a perfectly good DT ;)
HDTVChallenged 07-03-06, 12:43 AM Its coming in very strong here, so doubt its a fluke, never was able to get it at all here before. .
I concur. I dusted off my ratshack double-bow tie and was able to get a solid lock inside with no further amplification or heroics. This was not possible on the 5.4kW DT, which took every bit of gain on my CM4228/preamp combo to dig out of the noise.
Will be waiting to see how much better the 5.1 broadcasts sound and can wait till they upgrade to HD, which, from what I have read, ALL CW affiliates will be..
Not all of them ... many will be relegated to 480i subchannel status (cough)WKYT(cough)
thexder 07-05-06, 03:24 PM I have a Moto 6412 from Insight. Up until recently, I could record the local HD channels (760,762,763) via firewire to my PC. Today when I tried, no joy. I can still record channels 761, 764,765,766, and 767. It looks like Insight is applying 5C copy protection to the local HD channels. I thought this was not allowed.
Anyone else seeing the same thing. Any solutions??
I'm also in Louisville and have the DCT6412. I have the firewire installed correctly and can record from any channels below about 125, but I cannot get any channel above this to work. Did you have to do something specific for these channels to work? I have tried all of the hd channels and none of them give me any stream info when I try to stream it. There are so many forums on this that I've been searching for quite a few hours now. I just saw that you are also on Insight in Louisville, and was hoping you might be able to give me some assistance.
Are the problems with recording over firewire with the DCT6412 still happening? I've just ordered InsightHD with this STB for the purpose of recording content on my pc.
Also, they told me a new STB was going to be available "soon", but they didn't have an specific details. This was at the Insight - Commerce Crossing location.
One more question: Is 5C (copy protection) enabled on HD Pak stations?
donp326 07-06-06, 06:42 PM Is there any hope that WBKI-DT 34-1 and WKPC-DT 15-1,2 and 4 will be offering guide information? I get the guide programming from CBS, NBC,FOX and UPN. WBKI and WKPC don't show any guide data. If anyone has any info on this I would apprecite knowing.
Thanks

donp326 07-07-06, 09:30 PM Another question on WBKY-DT. The DT signal was off air this morning. They were supposed to at full power today but my signal strength this afternoon was below threshold to lock it in. I hope this wasn't ther full power. I'll try again after 24 I guess.
HDTVChallenged 07-08-06, 12:32 PM Yes WBKI-DT has been off air periodicly (and somewhat "randomly.) I assume they are still tweaking and finishing up the installation.
Of course, it would be nice if they came back up with a 1080i signal one of these times. ;)
peabobb 07-08-06, 03:33 PM Hello everyone,
I'm thinking about picking up a 27" Samsung HDTV as a second HDTV. It comes with a built in HD tuner that supports QAM. Before I buy it, I'd like to know if anyone is currently using an HD tuner with Insight to receive digital channels via QAM? If so, is there any trick to it? I hooked up my current HD receiver (Zenith HDV420) to the cable but it did not find anything during the channel scan.
Thanks,
Bryan

I can get the WBKI-DT program guide from my Media Center PC. So, far I never been able to pick up that station. I understand the station is in Campbellsville, KY and being in Louisville my indoor antenna might not even pick up the signal from the station even if the station does go into full power. However, since others in here say
WBKI-DT has been off air some I really don't know if it's not even on or at full power when I try to get the signal. So, I guess I will have to wait some to see if I can pick up the station.

KET has been inserting guide data into the stream for years...
How you get guide data depends on how you are receiving the WKPC-DT signal, if your on digital cable, the EPG information in the OTA stream is filtered out by most cable companies. If your receiving the station via an OTA antenna the data should be there. I just checked the EPG data leaving the KET Network Center in Lexington and verified it on the WKON-DT feed ( which is the same feed that feeds WKPC-DT).
What type of receiver are you using? Are you getting data on 3,5,6?
William
donp326 07-08-06, 11:41 PM I have a Dish Network 811 HD reviever and use a DB-4 multi directional UHF antenna for the OTA broadcasts. I get the guide data through a digital channel search performed by the Dish 811 reciever and when they appear on my channel list, only the OTA channels WHAS-DT, WAVE-DT, WLKY-DT, WDRB-DT, WFTE-DT have the guide information. But not on WKPC-DT, 68-01(I cannot remember that other PBS channel) and WBKI-DT they only show "local digital" on my channel list. Mabe my 811 reciever is the culpret. Depending on what i find out here I may post thei on DBSTalk too. Thanks
HDTVChallenged 07-09-06, 01:20 AM Mabe my 811 reciever is the culpret.
Bingo ... As far as I know, there are no DBS/ATSC boxes that make use of the OTA EPG data (this includes D*.) All programming data comes down via satellite, if it comes down at all.
gdarwin 07-09-06, 10:44 AM You also have to subscribe to sat locals.
donp326 07-09-06, 11:37 AM Thats right my OTA comes through the 811 via the ASTC tuner and and I am subscribed to locals through E*. After I moved from Louisville to Anderson Co to get back to the country, E* will no longer let me get the Louisville locals via satellite so I get them all OTA. All I get through E* is the Lexington locals here but Louisville is still my choice so my antenna is it for my locals. I just miss being able to see in advance what is on the KET channels and WB. I guess the 811 reciever will get the guide data on the regular network and UPN channels but not on PBS or WB. So I guess I can live with that.
Thanks

chuckmccky 07-11-06, 09:29 PM Update: I just noticed that WDRB-DT has filed to amend their signal pattern, which according to this filing, if approved by the FCC, should really improve your signal. It looks like the proposed change would send a "full strength" signal your direction.
http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/eng_tv.pl?Application_id=1097756
Steve
Has this been approved by FCC? Any date set to implement? Just suffering through another night of poor signal from WDRB here in LaGrange, KY and wondering if there is any hope for a stronger OTA signal.
goldrich 07-11-06, 10:22 PM chuckmccky,
I just noticed your post. According to WDRB's FCC file, it is still indicated as an application. This application is the last item at this link.....................
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/tvq?list=0&facid=28476
As opposed to the field values listed under the construction permit filing, which I believe is what the station is currently operating under, this newer application, if approved by the FCC, would allow WDRB-DT to send more signal in your direction plus this application indicates a higher antenna height than the current construction permit filing.
Steve
Big East Cards 07-12-06, 11:20 AM We don't really need 2 copies of WDRB in the metro area so I hope that WBKI does get the new CW network.
Rather than put a rotor on for that one station, which is at 170 degrees while the main "farm" is at 320 degrees from me, my solution will be to just build a small yagi antenna optimized for channel 19 and combine the leads on the roof. MAY be really lucky and not have to do anything, though, as channel 21.x (really on 8.x) comes in just fine and they are at 200 degrees from me. (Right now, I just get 34 analog on DishNetwork.)
If WFTE gets the new CW, there are always other networks around for WBKI to pick up, I guess, but am not sure that I will really care about watching anything on there.
Somehow, I get the feeling that Mike was fired from WDRB at some point. :)
Any work on when Dish will offer Louisville channels in HD? It suppose to be some time this year.
gdarwin 07-14-06, 07:10 AM Dish never gives dates. They just do it when they feel like it...
gdarwin 07-15-06, 11:19 PM Louisville WAS on the 2006 list for Dish, but you are right, they do things when they want to, not really feeling like they need to advise the paying customers of what they can expect and when. (Which is why I have just scheduled Insight in to replace Dish here.)
I cancelled Insight and went to Dish when my total bill for cable tv and BB was going to over $200 a month. Just cancelled Insight BB over the outage two months ago....
Insight is totally disconnected from my house right now....
Enjoy the HD Dish provides. They might take there time though..
goldrich 07-16-06, 10:55 AM Yesterday morning I noticed that WFTE is now WMYO. Is this station planning to be an affiliate of the new My Network TV from Fox?

HDTVChallenged 07-16-06, 11:24 AM Yesterday morning I noticed that WFTE is now WMYO. Is this station planning to be an affiliate of the new My Network TV from Fox?
Yes. WMYO(WFTE) gets "MyNetwork", WBKI gets "The CW"
Grndzro 07-16-06, 06:59 PM I want to ditch Insight and was looking at Dish Network. It is the cheapest for HD-DVR and they offer many more HD channels than Insight. The only drawback is the local channels are not offered in HD through Dish. Has anyone here used an over the air antenna here in Louisville with Dish Network. Any and all information to assist me with this is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Big East Cards 07-16-06, 09:23 PM And your feeling could not be further from the truth, just a viewer who happens to dislike shoddy use of the airwaves.
And I would guess you work for or have worked for the 41/58 complex? Relatives there? :D
And yes, as a UL Grad/Fan, I am VERY happy that 41/58 no longer gets to hose the UL games.
Nope, never worked for any TV station, nor have any relatives who do.
What about WDRB do you hate so much? IMO, they did a much better job on the Cards games then WHAS does. The posters on CardinalSports.com agree.
That's all just a matter of opinion of course. You just spend a lot of time on here and on the WBKI forums bashing WDRB.
gdarwin 07-17-06, 06:58 AM I have Dish and use an OTA antenna on all my receivers, 211, 411, 942, and a 622. No problems at all.
NashDigie 07-17-06, 02:20 PM For those of you that receive (or don't receive) WBKI-DT, there is information on the FCC website, that I found, that might help your reception of the channel. WBKI-DT is not fully constructed. Yes, it is broadcasting at 1000kw, but it is not as high on the tower as it is suppose to be, making the coverage area smaller, which may be the reason some of you (including me) have not received it yet. Below is a quote from the fcc application WBKI filed.
LOUISVILLE COMMUNICATIONS LLC IS COMMITTED TO SERVING WBKI-DT'S FULL MAXIMIZED SERVICE AREA. HOWEVER, FULL CONSTRUCTION OF THE STATION'S MAXIMIZED FACILITIES CANNOT BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT GREAT EXPENSE AND/OR A LOSS OF EXISTING ANALOG SERVICE DURING THE CONSTRUCTION NECESSARY TO DO SO BECAUSE THE STATION'S DIGITAL CONSTRUCTION PERMIT SPECIFIES A TOP-MOUNT ANTENNA APERTURE WHICH IS CURRENTLY OCCUPIED BY WBKI-TV'S ANALOG ANTENNA. ACCORDINGLY, THE INSTANT STA PERMITS THE STATION TO GREATLY ENHANCE THE SERVICE PROVIDED TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THE STATION CAN TOP-MOUNT ITS DIGITAL ANTENNA.

donp326 07-18-06, 12:05 AM I have an OTA antenna connected to my Dish 811 and get WAVE-DT1,2,3, WLKY-DT1, WDRB-DT1, WHAS-DT1,2, WMYO-DT1 and KET WKPC 15-0,1,2,3,4,5,6 and KET2 68-1. No WBKY yet though. WHAS doesn't come through most of the time this far east, less than 50% signal strength. WKPC will come through at 60% or better in the evenings or early morning until 10:00 AM and in the evenings WKPC drops back off to below 58% around 11:30 PM. WAVE, WLKY, WYMO and WDRB I can get all the time 65% or better. That is what my OTA gives me. The antenna is not on top my house but in the attic. It is a DB-4 I got from www.antennasdirect.com .
gdarwin 07-18-06, 12:15 AM Move the antenna above the roof. You are probably getting a lot of multipath problems from the roofing materials and the nails in the roof. I had mine in the attic and it was the pits. Now on the roof and no problems

Humm, interesting ... Based my results and other real-world reception reports, I would say that this map significantly underestimates how far the signal is reaching. But then again, all of digital coverage predictions seem to err on the conservative side. YMMV
HDTVChallenged 07-18-06, 11:05 AM ... No WBKY yet though. WHAS doesn't come through most of the time this far east, less than 50% signal strength. .
If you mean WBKI, then you'll need to point the antenna ~90 degrees toward the SW from your normal position for Louisville. WBKI's tower is 8-10miles west of Lebanon, KY (or about half way between Bardstown and Campbellsville.) Roof mounting will increase your usable signal by at least 20dB ...
donp326 07-18-06, 11:14 PM I have considered moving the DB-4 to the roof but I have a completely metal roof and the footing on it is really scary as the roof pitch is very steep. It looks like it stays in the attic for now. Yes I know that WBKI is off to the south from the Louisville main channels. I hoping that once WBKI gets their antenna redesigned the will come through even if it hits the side of the DB-4.
HDTVChallenged 07-19-06, 06:31 PM ... but I have a completely metal roof ...
There's your problem. I'm surprised that you are getting a signal at all in the attic.
NashDigie 07-19-06, 06:51 PM That is one heck of a difference!
Was there anything that said when they were gong to have the full construction completed? Will it be when they have taken analog off the air?
Thanks!
I don't know what they mean by that either. I am hoping that they mean that they have to cut analog off during the duration of the construction which is within the next two months. This is my opinion. This is the way I am wanting it to be.

donp326 07-19-06, 08:05 PM My house is an old two story farm house with a new "tin" roof, really anodized steel I had put on several years ago. So far I am satisfied with my OTA reception. I am looking forward to WBKI redoing their antenna. I am pretty sure I will be able to receive it then. Only if WHAS-DT (ABC) would ramp up their signal in my direction I would all the networks in my reach. I am just far enough away in this hilly country that atmospheric conditions make a difference and the hills above my house do too.
HDTVChallenged 07-20-06, 01:06 AM My house is an old two story farm house with a new "tin" roof, really anodized steel I had put on several years ago. .
Just out of curiosity ... would your DB4 be pointing toward one of the gable-ends (vs. a sloping side of the roof)?
donp326 07-20-06, 07:12 PM Its definitely aimed at the gable ends within 12 inches of the west side wall in the old part of the house. the DB-4 is also at an angle of 299-302 from the north because that's where i get my best reception of the DT channels. I had a strange thing happen last night. I tuned in KET4 for a program on Thomas Jefferson. The video was booming at 75% signal but there was no audio at all for the entire program. All other KET channels were just fine as 4 was until that one program then the stereo audio returned on KET4 after the program that had the problem was over. I have also seen a KET4 HD broadcast that was in 5.1 ( the first I had ever seen and the 5.1 audio skipped badly. That picture was great but the audio was crap. KET has said it was leading the HD way but it seem to be falling behind.
William Smith 07-20-06, 09:42 PM We had an decoder lockup and drop the audio..sorry about that I left before it crapped out..
HDTVChallenged 07-20-06, 10:52 PM Its definitely aimed at the gable ends within 12 inches of the west side wall in the old part of the house.
I thought that might be the case ;) Metal roofing material is pretty efficient at blocking RF signals from your antenna. I doubt that you'll have any luck getting WBKI with your attic mount.
Is anyone getting a popping noise/beep from WHAS? I noticed the noise last week.
donp326 07-21-06, 07:47 PM Yes the 223 angle is correct, I'll not worry too much a about WBKI DT for now and maby Ill do something about the remount of the OTA antenna later this fall. I get all the other stations that really matter to me. I don't live in Lawrenceburg but in the far western part of Anderson Co, I can see the radio towers on Jeptha Knob from the hill top above my house. Too bad I can't mount the OTA antenna up there, too far from the house.
donp326 07-22-06, 09:23 PM I tuned to WKPC DT-4 (KET4) for a show that began at 9:00PM. Just like I said before there is no audio feed coming in with the video. It's not me or my equipment, my Panisonic XA25 reciever has no issue with any other KET channel or any other channel as well. What's going on with KET4? This is the third time in the last two weeks I have noticed this.
robjulo 07-24-06, 09:21 AM Dayum. My BB is only 45$ a month, and no way I can see that I could possibly spend another $150+ a month on cable. All I want is the packages without the HBO, Showtime, etc. movie packs. For 1 DVR, 2 Dig recvrs, HD and Digital packages, its about $105, including my BB service.
When I did my comparison, Insight was cheaper than Dish (via upgrade) or DirectTV (via new subscriber, even though I used to have them.)
(edit: correct bolded amount above)
When I compared a month ago, Insight programming was almost $33 per month more expensive than Directv for the packages I had.
I'd love to be served by a cable company that wasn't third rate and was actually competitive with their pricing and programming offering. Until then, I'll stick with satellite.
The coverage area for WBKI-DT's temporary construction doesn't reach me according to the map, but the full construction does. Also, I only have an indoor OTA antenna. Even if I was to put up an outdoor antenna, I might still not get WBKI-DT's station with the temporary construction coverage area. It's the only OTA station in the metro Louisville area I can't get, so I'm not going to cry over not getting WBKI-DT. Hopefully when they go to full construction coverage I will get the station.

HDTVChallenged 08-11-06, 06:46 PM Now if only there was some sign of a 1080i CW signal in our future. I'm beginning to have doubts, since WBKI is apparently still playing the "financial hardship" card.
Big East Cards 08-13-06, 05:57 AM I wonder if WBKI will ever get rid of their giant bug they keep on the screen at all times?
NashDigie 08-15-06, 02:29 PM I don't know if this is the right thread to put this in or not, but I found on the WBKO website, the dates that both Fox and the CW will start airing on the WBKO-DT channel. For Fox (13-2), it will start on Sept. 5th, and for CW (13-3), it will start on the same date that CW will start, Sept. 18th. I thought I would pass along the information.

HDTVChallenged 08-18-06, 12:08 PM Has anyone noticed that WAVE 3 has way too much red in it lately? At first I thought my 4 month old TV was going bad already.
Haven't really watched much from WAVE(DT) lately ... but the network HD feed doesn't seem to differ much (if at all) colorwise from WLEX ... other than perhaps on SNF. Are you seeing this on HD programming or just upconverts?
I can say that almost all non-network programming on WBKI-DT is way too yellowish ... primetime seems to get a bit closer mark. The analog feed seems to show the same yellowish problem, but it is not as oversaturated as the digital feed.
EDIT: I did some A/B comparisons between WLEX-DT and WAVE-DT during a bit of "Days ..." @ 1pm today. There does appear to be a noticable red bias on WAVE-DT (3.1) compared to WLEX (18.1) ... at least for upconverted programming. So, I'd say your new set is OK ;) I'll try checking the HD feed tonight (if I can remember through the summer-cold fog .... grrr.)
NightowlKY 08-26-06, 09:45 AM Well, I'm making the jump to Insight HD. Tired of dealing with only getting in WLKY-DT and WAVE-DT (only 1/2 the time) over the antenna. Plus, Monday night football going to ESPN this year.
So, what type of hardware is Insight using these days and what are the abilities to copy broadcasts to an HTPC?

KY Jedi 09-01-06, 12:09 PM Anyone with Insight and cablecard, could you describe your experience with the installation? And what packages do you have? Last I heard the cablecard was $1.99 per month.
Scott Shanks 09-03-06, 01:00 AM I originally bought an LG 32" LCD flat panel with CableCard. Insight came out to install a CableCard and could not get it to work, period. I'm not sure why. I wasn't home. The tech told my wife the card from Insight was not compatible with the slot on the LG. I ended up returning the LG (it had other issues as well).
I then bought a Toshiba 32' LCD flat panel with a CableCard slot. It has performed fairly well after a firmware upgrade was installed by a Toshiba tech (Clarksdale TV). On one occasion the card started making all of the digital channels pixelate. The only fix was to reseat the card. That was not a big deal. But when you do that, you lose all of the custom settings for the TV Guide. It is a pain to set back up, but if you intend on using that feature very much it has to be done.
My recommendation would be:
If the CableCard is for your main TV, get the DVR instead.
If the CableCard is for a secondary TV, it is fine with only minor headaches.

Capt_Ky 09-07-06, 01:23 PM I really can't get as excited about ESPNHD as I can the Cards. I have a Samsung DLP and ESPNHD football games look more like my DVD-2900 than say the games on CBS,Fox,ABC and NBC. Louisville we definitley have a Insight problem: the double dipping for Prem HD(Showtime and HBO) and regular HD broadcast. It pisses me off to have a limited package with HD and Showtime and see into packages for a third less, why hell I had to pay the idiots 30.00 to come out and fix their mistake. Then had to have Audio Video by Design fix their fix. Every month my wife says shes cutting the cable, I've heard that for 18 years now!

Just called WAVE and the woman who answered said they'd look into it. Well, unless they drop all of the sub-channels, nothing will fix this crap.

HDTVChallenged 09-14-06, 09:59 PM ... is now transmitting either 1080i or 720p on 34.1 ! (I assume 1080i)
Supernatural is up in 4:3 upconversion mode. So perhaps we'll get CW in HD after all.
HDTVChallenged 09-15-06, 12:01 PM ... OTOH, there appears to be something screwy with the PID tables. My E86 locks on to the signal, but is displaying a blank screen with no sound. My HR10 displays WBKI-DT just fine in 16:9. I hope this isn't an indicator of some nefarious "480p/Faux-HD" plot. ;) :D

donp326 09-19-06, 10:27 PM What causes a bollixed audio file on KET-4? I was watching it a couple of nights ago the new program came on at 10:00 PM and then a loud high pitched tone hit my speakers and made my wife jump in the next room. The video was fine but the audio went south. Does KET monitor the different stations broadcasts? Surely an audio glitch like that shouldn't run undetected for long. This one was still going 1/2 hours (10:30 PM) past the program start.
HDTVChallenged 09-20-06, 02:26 AM 1) My HR10 behaves as if WBKI-DT is running 1080i.
2) My E86 locks on the signal, but refuses to display any picture or sound.
So either there is a PSIP/PID issue that's preventing the E86 from display or there's an outside chance that they may be doing an odd format: i.e. 704x480i/p with a 16:9 flag that the E86 is choking on but the HR10 handles ok. The odds are on PSIP/PID trouble - I can't image them bothering with 480i/p WS format at this point.
3) There has been no HD program passthrough so far ... only "upconverts." *But* the first original (and supposedly HD) CW programming of the season is "...Top Model" tonight (Wed.) Perhaps we'll be pleasently surprised ... or not.

So what was the verdict? Pleasant surprise or disappointing expectation?
Hey fellow Louisvillians,
I am new to the whole hdtv thing. I recently bought a 50 inch Sony. Hooked up a indoor antenna last night to see what kind of reception on local HDTV channels I would get. Well, the reception is fantastic! One problem I seem to have though is that all the channels I get seem to bounce from 4:3 to 16:9. I watched Fox HD last night and one show was in 16:9 and the next was in 4:3. I went through all the screen settings to see if I could fix it but nothing worked. So my question is, has this happened to anyone else here in Louisville? Or is there just some setting I have overlooked on my TV. Thanks!
HDTVChallenged 09-22-06, 12:27 PM So what was the verdict? Pleasant surprise or disappointing expectation?
LOL ... still nothing resembling actual HD yet (turns out "Top Model" isn't HD anyway.) Smallville (at least the first few minutes) was windowboxed last night ... and still nothing on my E86 ... "It's a mystery"

Was I surprised to find a Louisville specific forum on here. I'm just wading through the last few pages so pardon if already discussed....
I have a Sony KDS 50XBR1 for about two months now, Use the Insight HD service with the DVR. Love the true HD quality pictures on it. My standard digital has a pretty soft picture quality that borders on blurry.
Has anyone been able to improve the standard digital picture from Insight? Are there different DVR models used by Insight? Maybe another would be better....
I will say SD is 100% better than it used to be when I had a tube based HDTV and the analog box when cable HD first came out in Louisville.
I feel like I'm back in 1975 and there are only 7 channels on TV.....
Thanks in advance.

Got my TV at BB and their just happened to be an Insight rep there. So I got the instant sales pitch for Insights High Def with the PVR. I questioned the Insight rep and the BB sales guy as to why I would need their HD service for classic cable. Both told me that I wouldn't be able to receive a HD signal without an outside antenna. I explained that the LG had a QAM tuner and that I should be able to just plug the cable directly into the TV. They both said I was wrong and would need Insights service, so... being a Noob I said ok.
Long story short plugged in cable and received all unscrambled HD signals. And it seems like thousands of music channels,LOL. Cancelled Insights install.
The PVR would be nice as would the PPV. But as I explained to the sales person who called to ask why I cancelled the installation Insight doesn't have enough HD content,IMHO.
I've only had my LG-37LC2D for a couple of weeks now and couldn't be happier.
The SD picture is almost equal to my old SD Toshiba tube, and the HD is wonderful
I have Insights phone and high speed internet maybe that has something to do with having a good signal? I know in order for their broadband to work it has to have a good signal at all times

briancail 09-24-06, 05:08 PM Anyone else having trouble with OTA reception on 41.1 (FOX)?
Before the Fri/Sat storms, I was getting constant 80+ signal strength using indoor Zenith SilverSensor antenna into HR10-250. Today (Sun), the signal is jumping from 15 to 85 and all over the place in between.
Also having problems with 32.1 (CBS). The other stations are coming in with low 90s strength.
The antenna wasn't moved and I verified that all the connections are tight.
Did FOX revert to lower power mode?

I'll agree with you that it IS a piece of crap, but not getting the Insight PVR box ($15 per month) doesn't exactly offer much in the way of savings versus a HD TiVo at $800 retail plus a $12.95 service charge every month. Not a lot of "savings" there to put toward the TiVo.
I'll be getting the HD TiVo box, but only after the price comes down some. Until then Insight's Moto box will just have to do *le sigh*.
I'am just guessing, you did have the TV scan for HD channels didn't you? And you do have the cable screwed into the right connector? Theres one connector for antenna and one for cable.
Yes had it scan and proper connector....Just SD picture quality is much better through the box attached via HDMI input. SD is still "soft" but much better than straight cable connect.
I thought that would be the case for all TV's. I thought the cable box did some sort of processing for the digital non HD signal that improved it.
Shows how little I actually know. A little knowledge.....

Just as a side note I read this in another forum.
"Lucky for everyone that i read this. I live in the land of s*hit tv. So i know all about analogue signals. The remedy is use a svhs recorder and a dvd recorder. Screw the analogue cable into the input on the svhs player/recorder then use a svhs lead out to the dvd recorder. Use component leads from the dvd recorder to the lcd tv. Make sure the dvd recorder is set to 16 by 9 480p. Try composite and the super vhs lead from the svhs recorder/player and you will notice a huge difference between the two." Author unknown
I would think that it would be good to use a upconverted dvd player when using his method.

Who are "they?" ... I doubt that WLKY has invested in the equipment required to receive syndicated programming in HD yet - much less the equipment needed to integrate it with their local ad spots. It's much easier when you have a live network feed to work with.
sredmyer 09-26-06, 09:31 PM I hope somebody can help me fix this problem (or at least explain it to me). Here is the situation: I live in Louisville, KY, have DirectTV and am using the HR10 HD reciever. I have all local OTA HD broadcasts programmed into my HR10. The HR10 is connected via component video and optical digtal audio to a Harmon Kardan AVR 7300. The video is then connected from HK AVR to an AKAI 50" plasma display. The problem is this, while watching OTA HD channels (not HD programming) the Dolby mode of the AVR is constantly switching between Dolby Digital and Logic7. This normally happens only when the programming changes (like when going from the show to a commercial or visa versa) and is tolerable but on some shows (most notably Jeopardy) the switch of audio modes is virtually constant having no apparent cause and is most annoying. I have tried setting the AVR to Logic7 but it auto senses the DD signal and switches back. What is going on here? Am I doing something wrong? Is there no way to stop this damn thing from constantly changing audio?
HDTVChallenged 09-26-06, 11:24 PM Well folks ... it looks like WBKI is finally passing something very much like HD. Random samplings of Gilmore and the first half-hour of Runaway were full screen 16:9 ... but not without problems. Commercial breaks were consistant with those on network HD feeds and there was even a full screen 16:9 MasterCard spot.
That having been said, the quality of the video was not exactly "reference" for HD. There was a constant stuttering frame-rate issue and the resolution/"pop" was a less than on other HD feeds. It was tough to tell if this was mediocre HD or really good SD material ... certainly it was no match for CBS via WLKY.
... And my Hughes echo-8-6 unit still refuses to display any picture or sound.
Edit: During the last half of "Runaway" and WBKI ran a spot proclaiming that 'CW in High Definition is now available on digital channel 34-1.' It looks like they've got a few growing pains to work through ...
HDTVChallenged 09-26-06, 11:31 PM I hope somebody can help me fix this problem (or at least explain it to me).
Some of this may be normal (the switches at commercial breaks for instance.) OTOH, WLKY's (CBS) DD encoder cycles randomly between DD2.0 and DD5.1 when there is no actual DD5.1 stream present. (Edit: I meant to say when WLKY is in upconversion mode.) I notice this often on the WLKY newscasts. I suspect this occurs during "Jeopardy" as well. You might try switching the HR10 to PCM output for non-network shows. FWIW, I haven't noticed this problem on any other Louisville station .. YMMV
sredmyer 09-27-06, 05:24 PM WLKY's (CBS) DD encoder cycles randomly between DD2.0 and DD5.1 when there is no actual DD5.1 stream present. (Edit: I meant to say when WLKY is in upconversion mode.)
Why on earth would they randomly switch between the two modes?
Is this "upconversion mode" what I am seeing when I see standard aspect ratio (4:3) on an OTA HD broadcast? Does this explain why even though the picture is not true HD it appears much better (is clearer and appears to have more detail) than the same picture on the standard feed?
If so what type of upconverting do they use? My Harman Kardon AVR has (and I am using) Faroudja video processor, but I am not even sure I can see a difference between when it is on and when it is off. It certainly does not do anywhere near the job of "upconverting" as whatever it is that WLKY and the other locals are using.
Also since I am asking questions (and more importantly, getting answers) why is it that all of my OTA HD stations and most of the HD stations on DirecTV switch to this upconverted 4:3 picture when going to commercial? It does not seem to be a problem with the commercials themselves as I have seen the same comercials on TNTHD if full 16:9 HD and they look and sound great. Infact the TNTHD channel is all HD all the time (or atleast everytime I have watched it it has been) commercials and all. If this is possible why do the local stations not do it?
Thanks for your response I feel there is so much voodoo to this entire HD arena and really appreciate getting answers to these questions.
HDTVChallenged 09-27-06, 06:52 PM Why on earth would they randomly switch between the two modes?.
I look at it as the price of having DD5.1 on CBS-HD programming. I figure either a) the DD encoder is getting random noise which triggers the switch or b) the DD encoder is continuing to be triggered by whatever is on the CBS-HD feed (but not visible to us home viewers.)
If so what type of upconverting do they use?
I'm reasonably sure it's built into their Harris HD encoder(s.)
Also since I am asking questions (and more importantly, getting answers) why is it that all of my OTA HD stations and most of the HD stations on DirecTV switch to this upconverted 4:3 picture when going to commercial?
The short answer is that it's much easier for the master switch/control ops ... until the demise of analog TV anyway.

Most of the commercials are still SDTV at 4X3 and since this is where the stations make their money they work real hard to get the commercials right, and the actual program content is much lower priority. Do NOT confuse a 16X9 picture with HDTV. You can say that all HDTV is 16X9 but not all 16X9 is HDTV. TNTHD I call the great "Stretch-O-Vision" channel as they most always take 4X3 and stretch it to fill a 16X9 picture, but it is still SDTV. All the people look wide and fat with oval faces, I hate it.
After you watch for awhile you can usually tell the upconverted by the lower detail.
WAVE is especially bad as they seem to have a manual switch to turn HDTV back on after the commercial and late at night and on the weekends they forget to do this very often, so you see Jay Leno in 16X9 then 4X3, then 16X9 then.............
Also WAVE has a very low bitrate of around 8-9 mbps for their HDTV and so when there is fast motion it gets very ugly with increased noise and loss of detail., so you know that picture quality is not very high on their list.
WLKY experimented with stretching 4X3 to 16X9 and then they tried just stretching part way, thankfully they have stopped this corruption of the video signal.
I guess this will settle down after some more time, I would guess the picture quality will continually go down as is the common occurance with DirecTV and Dish.

mppatt01 10-04-06, 08:51 AM I recently got an HD70 projector, so I am obviously needing to upgrade to HD immediately. I currently have SD Direct sat and no OTA HD tuner for my projector.
I'm hoping I can get some local feedback/comparison of the following;
Staying with Dirct, I can get the H20 for $40 and get the programing I want for ~$63/mo. am stuck with a 2 year contract, OTA local more HD channels and no DVR (no home phone).
Switching to Insight HD, I get more SD channels due to packages, DVR, and no need to mess with OTA local HD, but I figure I'll be at least $80/month and I don't know if I'll have a contract.
I've been undecided for the past week, both have there pluses and minuses, and I don't even know if HD-Lite is an issue as it seems everyone is doing some form of bandwidth sharing.

I redid the digital channel search and WAVE came back as 47-1 -2 and -3 without the "WAVE" as the station ID but the programming guide shows all the other OTA channel ID's such as WLKY,WKPC,WHAS to name a few. Do I need to channel search again? What happened? Was this a glitch at WAVE?
HDTVChallenged 10-09-06, 01:24 AM What happened? Was this a glitch at WAVE?
Yes. I don't know the specific behavior of the 811s, but it sounds like you'll need to rescan to get back to 3-1, 3-2, 3-3 ... assuming that WAVE has fixed the original glitch.
STEVENSHS 10-09-06, 01:45 PM Last night 10/8 we could not watch Desperate Housewives on 11.1 due to heavy pixelating and audio drop outs. We tune over the air. I am trying to determine is it was my antenna, receiver or ch 11.1. Anyone else watch in HD OTA?
donp326 10-09-06, 06:40 PM I do but I don't watch 11 very much. 11-1 lately has been pixilating at 63 or 64 percent signal. Compared to other stations I get 11-1 should come in rock solid at that signal strength. In my area 11-1 comes in at the lowest signal strength of all the Louisville HD broadsacts which is funny because all the towers except one are on the same ridge in Indiana
chuckmccky 10-09-06, 07:02 PM I was watching this game on 41-1 via OTA on Saturday night. For about one hour 9:55 to 10:55 all I could get was 4:3 SD not 16:9 HD. Anyone else have this same problem?
Was it just someone asleep at the switch in the control room?
gdarwin 10-09-06, 10:32 PM Asleep at the switch.... Which is rare on 41.1..
NashDigie 10-12-06, 03:41 PM Well, I saw this on the internet yesterday and it kind of threw me for a loop. WNKY-DT, the NBC affiliate in Bowling Green, KY, is going to start broadcasting a CBS digital subchannel in early 2007. A link to the article is below. I thought I would pass the information along.

There is certainly someting odd going on at WHAS, at least on the digital signal. I used to always get a clear feed from them OTA, up around 80 to 90 signal strength.
Now I'm getting about 60, and 11-1 is unwatchable with lots of audio and video dropouts. All other OTA channels are crystal clear.

donp326 10-13-06, 10:21 PM Tonight WAVE/47-1,-2,-3 etc dissappeared from my guide so I went do a local channel digital search again but to my surprise WAVE 3-1, 3-2, 3-3 and now 3-4. I Tube or something like that had appeared. Then an hour later it all went back to 47-1 47-2 and 47-3 with no 47-4. I think I'll call the station next Monday if
things don't straighten up.
MColeman 10-14-06, 01:05 PM Currently I have direct tv. But I don't feel like doing the contract. I also pay for a cable modem via insightbb. The only thing I want are local channels in HD... I'm feeding the signal into a projector.
What equipment do i need? Will I need a seperate antenna? Will the cable connection have local in hi def? Should I get a cable box or a sat. box? Seems like every time I talk to sales people I get a different story.
What would you suggest?
chuckmccky 10-14-06, 02:37 PM If you want to get HDTV via a OTA (over the air antenna) here are some suggestions:
1 Find out where the transmitters are in relationship to where you are:
These sites will help: http://www.louisvillehdtv.com/digital_louisville_stations.aspx
http://www.hdtvpub.com/local/localarea.cfm/group_plasma-hdtv/
The 2nd site gives he exact latitude and longitude of the transmitters, by clicking on more information.
2 find out your latitude and longitude by just doing a search on google for example "latitude and longitude your zip code)
3. It is also helpful to find out your elevation as compared to the transmitter height. If you know someone with a GPS navigation system, it will give the lat, long and elevation. You can find the transmitters elevation by searching on the stations call letters (WAVE, WHAS, etc.) at
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/audio/tvq.html Make sure you find the DT tranmitter
3. Calculate the distance between the transmitter and you:
http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~cvm/latlongdist.html
will do this for you.
Now you can go to an antenna selling store or web site and determine what kind of antenna you need.
4. http://www.satcom.co.uk/article.asp?article=1 can help you determine which direction to point the antenna .. Luckily the 4 major networks all have their transmitters at about the same place, some even share the same tower.
Also: http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx
can be of some help.
If you are near the transmitters, start with an indoor antenna from Circuit City, Best Buy or Radio Shack. If it does not work, you can bring it back.
I live in LaGrange, KY and wound up with an outdoor Terk TV36 or TV38 from Circuit city. I get the 4 major networks, with WDRB being the worst, but not by much. All are usually very good reception I get some breakup in windy rainy conditions. WDRB has applied to the FCC for a change in transmission strength in my direction that should improve this. I also get KET very well on 15-1 through 15-6.
Hope this saves some of the research and trial and error I went through.
I should say that also I get ESPN, ESPN2 and many other HD through Directv

WOW... Great Reply!
Question- I get local channels via direct tv. Do I need an additional antenna or do I need a high def box? IE: If I were to buy a sumsung HD box for direct tv, and not buy thehd, would I still get HD local via my sat antenna? BTW: I live in prospect.

I did not have any luck with the Directv provided antenna, that is why I bought the TERK. However Prospect is much closer to the tranmitters which are mostly in Floyds Knob, IN. so if you are at a good elevation (like on top of a hill or at least not dwon in a valley) the directv antenna might be OK
chuckmccky 10-15-06, 12:36 PM Also, some local HD channels are avaialble from Insight, but I do not know if you get all the subchannells, which you may or may not want. (For example 3-3 which has Weather Plus, or 15-5, 15-6 which have KY House and Senate)
chuckmccky 10-15-06, 04:35 PM You are going to need a HD tuner somewhere to tune the antenna signal. There should be on on the Samsung HD DVR, but check to be sure.

15-5 and 15-6 appear not to be on the air now. Thanks for posting those channels. I didn't even know those two were available. I added them to my TV settings as I get the free over the air digital TV thru my VBox tuner card on my Media Center PC. :)
MColeman 10-17-06, 09:50 AM When I checked into it (not long ago), to get the HD tuner/dvr from Direct, you HAD to sign up for their HD packages (was the same on Dish), otherwise you pay an absurdly an absurdly high amount for their DVR/HD box. They both (IIRC) allow you to tune in local channels in HD (although some variants do not allow you to tune in NTSC broadcasts, be sure to ask) using a OTA antenna.
If you wanted to get cable from Insight, you will need to rent one of their DVR/HD delivery boxes. It will NOT allow you to use an OTA antenna to receive anything but what you are paying for. They DO carry MOST of the locals in HD and IMO the PQ is excellent (compared to the HD Lite of Dish and Direct) and on par with what you will receive with an OTA antenna. (See Insight Pricing / Channel Offerings (http://www.louisvillehdtv.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=110) for further info.)
You may decide to buy a stand-alone HD Tuner, with or without DVR, which you could use to get local stations OTA in Digital format (HD or SD broadcasts) using an antenna as well. These are discussed here on AVSFORUM and there are several to choose from that work well (as well as some that are JUNK.)
If you decide to go the OTA route, that is simple enough to do. You will need a receiver (tuner) and then:
1) Go to www.antennaweb.org and put in your home address. This will show the distance and direction (compass orientation) of the stations from you. (Prospect is showing about 12-15 miles almost due east from most of the transmitters using just the zip code 40059 as a reference.)
2) Get an indoor antenna somewhere you can take it back if it doesn't work for you. Hook it up to the receiver and see how the PQ is on your set. (In my opinion / experience, Terk products are overpriced junk (and yes, I tried the one that is supposed to work with a satellite dish and one which was supposed to work without, while Zenith Silver Sensor <sp?> is pretty decent from the reviews here. I couldn't get what I wanted with indoor, so went with an outdoor, too much interference from where I live.)
3) If your PQ sux, get an outdoor antenna at Home Depot, Lowe's, Rat Shack, or on-line. (Check out the forums here before you buy so you can get a quality antenna for a reasonable price. At your distance, you don't need an antenna that will receive signals from 150 miles away, if you know what I mean.) When you mount the antenna, get a compass and point the antenna the direction of the towers and you should have your HD PQ.
Its not rocket science, just takes a while, and checking out the products that really will do the job you have decided you want is the hardest part. You can find all the info you need on AVSFORUM, I know I did (although I admit, I would have made fewer errors if I had checked before I tried a few solutions (see Terk products above.))
No matter which solution you ultimately decide on, you will be impressed with the HD broadcasts and kind of shaking your head each time the stations so something really dumb.
Hope this simpler approach works for you! Using this approach with a decent outdoor antenna has worked well for me, I get all the local channels, literally all of them, as good as they are being sent out.
-Mike
PS: Use the search feature on here liberally, you will be glad you did.
Mike,
Thanks.
So here is what I am considering: I have an HTPC downstairs hooked to my HD projector. I don't need HD upstairs. They sell new HD tuner cards for the pc. I'd like to buy the new ati HD card. And then use an antenna to see how it goes. The question is do I need an indoor antenna or am I going to have to climb on on the roof and mount an outdoor. Did you notice a big difference?
What antenna did you end up going with?
Thanks,
Matt
mppatt01 10-17-06, 11:23 AM Matt, Did you try antennaweb.org for a recommendation? I got some channels with a pair of amplifed rabbit ears in my basement , moved the rabbit ears to the attic and get a good strong signal for everything I want except 34-1 (so, I guess my mrs. won't be watching Top Model  ).
Mike P.
mppatt01 10-17-06, 12:01 PM I am having some trouble with my OTA set up. I am using a direct H20 with built in OTA tuner and an amplified basic tv top antenna set in my attic. On the big 4 channels I'm showing a signal strength around 75-100%.
The problem is the signal strength keeps dropping to 0. For example the signal meter will roam around 76-90 and about every 15seconds, drop to 0, then right back to 76-90, no 20,30,40, ... goes straight from a strong signal to nothing and does this on all the channels. Of course, I'm not worried about the signal meter, i'm worried about the show I"m watching and I keep getting a locked up screen and pixelation that I'm assuming has something to do with the lost signal as it has these issues from every 15 seconds to a minute.
Does anyone have any suggestions, fixes, or possiblie causes? Oh yea, I am live on Taylorsivlle road at the Watterson expressway.
Thanks
Mike

Sounds like classic multipath symptoms (although yesterday's monsoons might have been a factor.) A ChannelMaster CM4221 (UHF only) or a SilverSensor might help. OTOH, it could be the attic location.
mppatt01 10-17-06, 12:17 PM Thanks, I'll try again tonight to see if it wasn't the weather, If it continues, I supposed I should try a directional UHF antenna?

I had good luck with the channelmaster. I had mine put up in the attic. You might be able to do the same thing, and avoid the shingle slippage and the 30 foot drop off of your roof!
mppatt01 10-20-06, 11:22 AM PS: Have to pass on the training opportunity though, my wife would kill me if the fall didn't!!!

SONYMAN 10-23-06, 12:36 PM Looks like insight is getting close to launching their digital 2.0 and adding several new HD channels and moving the rest. 914 WBKI, 918 KET4, 925 TNT, 929 Special Events, 935 Discovery, 937 Universal, and 925 MHD.
Macpage 10-23-06, 08:33 PM All,
Nice to see a Louisville thread for a new member. Makes me feel right at home. Now I know my thoughts of picture problems in the 'ville aren't all in my head.
I did a search of this thread and didn't find any references to Insight's Motorola DCT 6416 DVR. For those of you with experience with this device, is it correct to assume that the 12.31 firmware may allow HDMI passage through "repeaters" such as AVR's and standalone video processors?
It seems from other AVS posts that getting past 12.15 on other providers may have somewhat solved this problem, at least for this box. Just wondering if that's the case here, so that I can figure out the connection options.
Thanks a bunch,
Mike
Macpage 10-24-06, 12:36 PM I found the answer in another thread. "12.31" doesn't solve the problem. According to others on AVS, it looks like 16.20 or possibly 12.35. I guess I'm going to have to break down and call Insight.

Scott Shanks 10-24-06, 01:06 PM According to the Courier this morning (Tues 10-24), Insight will launch the new HD channels and new Digital lineup beginning tomorrow.
bhaycraft 10-24-06, 03:55 PM I just last week dumped my old 4:3 Sony set up stairs in the bedroom for a new Vizio 50 Plasma(CC sale) but have had for some time up in the bedroom the 6412 Moto box. Well I went to use the HDMI output of the Moto box for the first time and the Vizio tells me there is no signal. So I switched HDMI ports on the Vizio and still no signal. Next I hooked up my Oppo DVI/ HDMI no problem on either HDMI connector on the TV. So this leaves me with either a problem with the new HDMI cable or the Moto box. So I tested the HDMI cable by hooking up my Hidef camera through the HDMI no problem so it's not the cable. I went into the Moto box settings to make sure HDMI is selected and 16:9 but still no signal. So I tried turning TV on first then cable box and cable box first and then TV and I still get no signal so I am starting to think a service call is in order. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. As a side note what indoor antenna is recommended as I would like to try out the built in tuner to see what non-cable HiDef looks like. Thanks
mppatt01 10-26-06, 09:46 AM I want a Channel Master 4221 (http://www.channelmaster.com/images/3021_4221.jpg) or equivalent. Are there any places in town that carry this or something similar (i know radio shack has antennas, but they are questionable and/or overpriced).
I continue having issues with losing signal on 3-1 and the screen freezing. I'm showing anywhere from 70-100% signal strength, depending on antenna alignment. The meter will stay at a high reading and will drop directly to 0% for just a second or two and then return directly to the high indicated signal.
I had this problem on all the local channels, but have added enough cheap rca uhf/vhf antennas and a walmart pre amp to fix the issue on all but 3-1. I think I'll try a better antenna next. I have the antennas in the attic and that is where the 4221 will go also. I am running ~80ft of coax total, I am located at the watterson @ taylorsville rd. Antennaweb.org suggests I am in a yellow range, and that seems to be true. If I were only watching analog, I could probably handle the issue, but the freezing during Heros was killing me. I have 4 days to fix the issue before the next episode.
Thanks

gdarwin 10-26-06, 10:22 AM You might want to consider putting the antenna on the roof. The fluxuating signal indicates multi-path interferrence. I had this problem with my Winegard HD9095-P in the attic. Moved it out side and it locks in everything. Feeds 4 receivers without an amp.
Tryed RS and antennas from Home Depot. None of them works well. I'm farther out in Highview.
mppatt01 10-26-06, 10:42 AM I have considered roof mounting the antenna, but want to try a directional uhf antenna in the attic first. I have made progress and am hoping a more appropriate antenna will get me the last bit I need.....I that fails, guess I'll be buying a ladder and going to the roof.

According to the Courier this morning (Tues 10-24), Insight will launch the new HD channels and new Digital lineup beginning tomorrow.
I am less then thrilled with the Dimsight 2.0 "upgrade". I had the upgrade pushed yesterday to my receiver and was expecting all the goodness of the new HD channels (mostly ESPN2). However when I tried the new content I got the dreaded "you are not authorized" message.
Called Insight and asked what was up, only to be told that I didn't have the right package to get the new HD channels! WTF? I pay $92/month for the "basic" cable, HD locals, HD "plus" pack and Showtime HD / HBO HD. Now they want another $5 or 12$ for the digital package (I thought that HD was digital...silly me!) which is now required for the new HD channels! Insight's gerry-mandering of the cable tiers is ridiculous. The amount of crap you have to buy just to get their pathetic HD selection is criminal.
This "upgrade" seems less about the giving the consumer more choice and features then getting our beloved local communications monopoly more options to gouge the customer.
I am done with Insight. I am going back to Dish after a 3 year hiatus. I get all their channels (including all the HD and movie channels), a better rated, bigger HD-DVR (without the crap intfarce on the Insight/Motorola box) for $7 more a month. Getting my local HD's via the antenna on my roof so I hope I am set.
I can't wait for the telcoms to start getting IPTV rolling in Louisville to give Insight some competition.
Whew...rant off!
-Alex-
HTCrazy 10-26-06, 11:52 PM Personally I'll take the extra channels. I haven't checked on the prices yet but getting ESPN2, TNTHD and others makes it somewhat easier to live with HD only. If they have to charge extra, fine. I'll decide if it's worth it to me but it's about freaking time we had more choices.
BTW, I've been watching the TNT horror movies in standard rez (on my 120" screen) and is it my imagination that standard rez quality has been improved with the upgrade?
stinger11723 10-27-06, 07:49 AM I was surfing the channels Wednesday and noticed I have the new HD channels without paying extra.
NightowlKY 10-27-06, 01:42 PM I was surfing the channels Wednesday and noticed I have the new HD channels without paying extra.
Not here. I get the "unauthorized" or whatever it says message.
:(
HTCrazy 10-28-06, 03:23 AM OK I take back every good thing I said about Insight. I'm currently just subscribing to basic cable plus HD - so I call Insight to see how much more I have to pay for the additional 3 HD channels. Since I'm paying $10 a month for all the HD channels I get so far, I figure maybe another $10 a month for the additional three.
Huh uh. The guy tells me first I need to get the classic package and then something else blah blah blah. I tell him OK OK, just tell me how much more I have to pay every month?
He says it looks like $48 a month extra. I say "for three HD channels?", he says "but you get all the classic channels" but of course I say "I don't want the classic channels, which should be obvious since I'm not paying for them now." He says "I'm sorry, but the extra HD channels (not including HBO or Showtime) will be an extra $48 a month."
At that point I was pissed off big time and I told him an extra $48 a month isn't going to happen. He says.. "If you change your mind..." and I cut him off and start yelling that I'm not F'ing stupid and not going to be screwed by them ever again... It was ugly and I was ashamed of myself.
Still Insight is showing its absolutely preditorial and smug monopolistic practices in plain sight - and I guarantee it will backfire on them. There will be pressure for regulation and more people moving away to Satellite - and I definitely intend to be one of them. Whoever is calling the pricing shots at Insight should be fired immediately before they cause a public relations disaster to the company.
GregJKy 10-28-06, 01:13 PM So, what is the story on these new HD channels? I'm getting the unauthorized message on them also and I pay for Classic. I have: Basic, Classic, HBO, Dual Tuner DVR/HD and the HD Pak for a total of ~ $80 per month.
I didn't notice anything about an extra charge in the letters they sent out... I'm not sure the new channels are worth anything additional to me per month, but I feel a little cheated that I'm not getting them.
kevindow 10-28-06, 07:00 PM Alright, you Insight folks are scaring me big time. I was just about to pull the trigger and move from DISH to the Insight triple play (broadband, phone, HD TV) in order to get the local channels in HD and avoid setting up an outdoor antenna. Are there any satisfied Insight customers out there, especially those who have the triple play ? Thanks.
Kevin
Man I'am sure glad I got a LG with a QAM tuner!
Insight's like a hog at the trough.
gdarwin 10-29-06, 05:34 PM Insight's like a hog at the trough.
Reason I left them two years ago. Went with Dish.
Macpage 10-29-06, 09:33 PM GregJ and Nightowl,
After reading Insight's fine print, it looks like we also have to have at least one digital pak (sports, family, etc.) with everything else to get the new HD channels. Thus:
- Basic
- Classic
- Digital HDTV/DVR Set-up
- At Least 1 Digital Pak
The business about paks is what is most offensive to me. Bleeding us for a mere $5 to get three otherwise included HD channels and our multi-service discount. What's funny is it appears that you can get ESPN2 without ponying up for the HD Extra Pak, but you have to have it for ESPN. I wonder how they come up with this stuff?
Best regards,
Mike
Mnofsinger 10-29-06, 09:53 PM I noticed that I wasn't getting the new HD channels when I turned on my cable Wednesday morning. I called them to complain Wednesday evening when I got home from work. I called the local number and they tranferred me to someone out of state. This person told me to call the local number to talk to someone in Louisville. I told him that I called the local number and he didn't know what to say. I called back and got someone in Louisville. This person said I should get the new HD channels as part of the HD pack. She asked me to hold while she set it up on the system. She came back and admitted that she was wrong and that I would have to subscribe to a Digital Choice pack to get the new HD channels. I told her that was stupid that the new channels should be a part of the HD Pack and that I wasn't going to subscribe to a bunch of channels that I didn't want just to get the 3 new HD channels. I told her I was going to look into one of the dish networks.
Now tonight, I am scanning through my HD Channels and am getting the new HD channels.... Did Insight get enough complaints to change their minds or is it a mistake on their part?
HTCrazy 10-29-06, 09:55 PM Insight's like a hog at the trough.
I moved here from San Diego where we had Cox cable. These guys had a pure monopoly and acted like it with arrogant and deplorable customer service and serious price gouging that they spent heavily on advertising to refute. Anyway, as soon as Satellite and other alternatives appeared Cox took it in the shorts because of all the pent up resentment in the community. Looks like Insight is heading down the same insipid path.
NightowlKY 10-30-06, 04:19 PM I just spoke w/an Insight rep and was told I only needed to add a digital pack which would be either $8/mo. or $12/mo. She obviously screwed up in telling me that as Insight has this on their website:
http://www.insight-com.com/products-local.asp#hd1
HDTV Lineup:
ESPN2 HD*
KET 4
MHD*
Special Events HD
TNT in HD*
WAVE HD (NBC)
WDRB HD (FOX)
WHAS HD (ABC)
WLKY HD (CBS)
*Subscription to Classic service, Insight Digital 2.0 with DVR & HDTV and 1 digital pak required to receive these channels.
Not sure I even want to do that. Insight is screwing up big time.
When they first had HD channels, we had more than we have now (BravoHD was there along with InHD 1 and 2) in addition to Discovery and HDNet and HDNet Movies.
Insight charges too much. So, I only get Insight analog channels and get HDTV over the air stations on my Media Center PC. Sure I miss the other digital channels, but I'm not going to let Insight bust my budget.
Alright, you Insight folks are scaring me big time. I was just about to pull the trigger and move from DISH to the Insight triple play (broadband, phone, HD TV) in order to get the local channels in HD and avoid setting up an outdoor antenna. Are there any satisfied Insight customers out there, especially those who have the triple play ? Thanks.
Kevin
I have used Insight since HD started and have had few problems. I have some big package that includes the HD, the DVR plus HBO, Starz, Showtime. Recently I've even been getting decent customer service - which is a positive change. The quality of standard digital is not fantastic - But I have adjusted my set to the point that even that is acceptable to my family. They now hide the remote so that I will not make any more adjustments to the picture.
I have priced it against satellite several times and it is slightly more expensive - But my family loves On Demand so I keep investing the extra money. Plus I have 6 TVs scattered around the house in kids/guest rooms in standard and that is easy with cable...
Personally I cannot imagine not having access to ESPN in HD (and now ESPN2) plus the quality of HDNET broadcasts makes you watch anything they throw up on air. Overall HD quality is very good and very reliable.
No Triple Play yet - But we are looking at making the jump.
I agree Insight needs competition but right now they seem better than ever to me.
For anyone interested in my INITIAL experience with the switch from Insight cable (back) to Dish....
I have kept the Insight HD package with the Motorola 6412 (III) DVR around to compare it with the Dish VIP622 Platinum package that I had installed last Sunday. I have a Benq 8720 FP (720p) with a HDMI connection directly to the DVR's via a 4 port Octavia HDMI switch. Audio is coming into a Yamaha 5920 via coax from the Motorola and toslink via the VIP622.
I did a very unscientific and subjective eyballing of the comparable Dish/Insight HD channels and here is how I saw them...
HBOHD.. slight advantage in sharpness to Dish
Showtime HD...slight advantage in sharpness to Dish
ESPN...slight advantage in sharpness to Insight
HDNet...no discernible difference
HDNet Movies...no discernible difference
Universal HD...no discernible difference
Discovery HD...no discernible difference
ABC/NBC/CBS/KET/FOX HD....the OTA signal is noticeably better than the Insight feed.
The advantage for either provider is very subtle in any given channel.
The REAL difference is in the HD DVR equipment. The VIP622 absolutely blows away the Motorola/Insight HD DVR in terms of functionality and interface.
Here are the areas where the Dish HD DVR excels:
-User interface: The clunky, slow and ugly interface on the Motorola is embarrassing compared to the bright and well organized menu and program structure in the 622. My wife and kids had NO problem quickly finding and accessing program and features while they struggled to navigate the Insight interface.
-Speed: The channel changes and speed of the 622 beats the Insight/Motorola box in every function. From menu access to guide updates to Hd channel changing the 622 is snappy and solid.
-Recording Flexibility: The 622 has two HD tuners plus an OTA tuner. The Insight box has dual tuners. Both can record two HD channels while watching a pre-recorded third. However the 622 adds a very good OTA tuner that can display a third HD stream from an Antenna which likewise can be watched or recorded.
PIP: The 622 in single DVR mode can display a HD PIP. Insight/Motorola has no HD or SD PIP.
-2nd Location DVR: The 622 can be setup to use one tuner as a dedicated DVR and exclusive satellite tuner for a second TV via a coax output. It is ONLY a 480i output but it does function exclusive of the main DVR, doesn't require a second box and can access all the DVR recordings shared on the main box. Insight requires a DVR/Tuner for each set for similar functionality and there is no sharing of recorded content between the DVR's.
-Remote: The 622 remote is well laid out and easy to use. There is an identical 2nd remote that uses RF for the 2nd TV/ Tuner 2 output. The Insight remote is crammed full of buttons and confusingly laid out. Neither remote is lit.
Overall the Dish service is on initial blush, a significant improvement in equipment and functionality and comparable in HD quality. When you add the additional HD channels (including the VOOM channels which have (to my surprise) a good selection of content and look very good), you have a great product that has much more content, and better equipment than the Insight offering and almost exactly the same price.
This could change of course in the future, but that is how it stands now. I am glad that I made the move to Dish for my HD. Blows Insight away...

HDTVChallenged 11-03-06, 12:59 PM Did anybody watch The Game on ESPN-HD last night? Seemed like there was much more artifacting than I remember from ESPN-HD in the past (via D*)
mppatt01 11-03-06, 01:08 PM I had an issue with what appeared to be a momentarily dropped feed a once or twice, but otherwise no problems (watching on DTV). I assumed it was an ESPN issue.

gdarwin 11-04-06, 05:25 PM Left Insight for Dish two years ago. Never regreted the move. With the number of boxes I had with Insight, level of programming, my bill is a lot lower with Dish subscribing to everything - including HD.
Fred Benz 11-05-06, 09:26 PM Would very much like to save the UofL vs WVa game to DVD. Currently have HD version saved on the Insight Moto DVR. Any and all help in accomplishing this task would be appreciated.
Fred:
Copying ESPN content to a DVD will be difficult if not impossible. You can't use the Firewire port on the Insight box, as the ESPN HD stream will be encrypted. Sorry.
If you have recorded content from ABC, NBC, FOX, or KET, the following info might help:

Yep HD since the CW startup. See this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8522296&&#post8522296).
Update: The PSIP problem with my E86 appears to be fixed. I thought they'd fixed the "stop-motion" issue, but it returned with a vengence during last week's Veronica Mars and Supernatural.
Now, I can hardly watch anything on NBC - it SUCKS BIG TIME! I wish they would outlaw sub-channels
Enjoy the crappy looking TUBE show, I'll be watching something else on another station.

Yep ... primetime (aka 8pm-10pm) CW from WBKI-DT is (almost) always in HD ... at least when I watch. I should note that I usually only watch VM and Supernatural. It's quite possible that they might have missed a switch here and there. I have to spin my antenna around for WBKI, so I haven't been monitoring them as much as I was a couple of months ago.
Juppers 11-21-06, 02:12 AM They got good there for 2 weeks or so, then last week dropped the ball and went back to stop motion HD. I really hope they get it all figured out soon.
donp326 11-23-06, 10:33 PM Here in western Anderson Co I was getting 75% or better on 3-1,2,3. Then 'The Tube' happened and now the WAVE signal dropped to 60-63% or to not lockable at all, while WLKY 32-1 with no subchannels comes in at 75-85% from the same broadcast antenna as WAVE. Too many subchannels in the soup at WAVE. It looks like I have lost WAVE at least until I can get a bigger antenna. I'm thingking about moving up to a DB8 from Antenna Direct. Maybe that will correct the WAVE signal loss on the DB4. The DB4 antenna has finally been moved from my attic to the outside. Every station comes in now except WMYO which I could recieve all last summer but now it's power has dropped too it seems. Most of the time now WMYO is not lockable and WAVE is recieved as stated perviously. WHAS, WDRB, WLKY and Channel 15 plus it's subs all come in fine. Also channel 21 which is not HD, comes in here. I was a little surprised at that.
donp326 11-24-06, 08:06 PM Good news WMYO came back at a constant 63% all is well except for WAVE.

Just a bizare coincidence (re: TheTube) ... for me it's WLKY-DT that's been "acting up" (for the past couple of weeks.) ... Odd atmospherics (inversion layers), no-doubt. Then again I did have to replace about 8 inches of squirrel chewed RG6 yesterday.

Is that when the picture gets blurry/fuzzy/weird when there is alot of movement, because that is happening to me here in Louisville.

Jerky, half frame rate (~15fps) video ... kind of like you're watching under a strobe light. You'll know it, when you see it.

Don't feel all alone in that subject. My CW digital channel has gone down in signal strength in the past week. I just found out today that a spot on my RG6 wire where it is close to the ground has been chewed some by my dog. So you're not the only one. :)

Mine is rock solid 92. Live in Springhurst using a Direct TV TIVO HR10-250.
Buckett 12-04-06, 07:48 PM I am in Highview/Fern Creek, also using HR10-250.
This is driving me nuts. It was fine a week ago. I have ruled out the HR10. Have tried re-aiming the antenna, no dice. Guess I will have to try and test the preamp tomorrow.
Anyone know of a local place that carries preamps?
Juppers 12-04-06, 11:21 PM Sounds more like signal overload. A preamp will probably make the problem worse.
BenCJedi 12-08-06, 11:03 PM Is it far-fetched to believe I have a chance to pull in WBKI-DT in Winchester, KY? I have grand visions of purchasing a Channel Master 4228 UHF antenna and Channel Master 7777 pre-amp to be able to combine the 4228 and my homebrew wireloop ('cut' for WDKY-DT VHF channel 4). Right now my wireloop and CM 3044 distribution amp exist in my second floor office. I can pull all the Lexington digitals in nice and strong.
The setup will all go into the attic and I will do some wiring to distribute around the house. According to my neighborhood deed I am not allowed an antenna outside larger than 24", so I am restricted to the attic for my antenna project.
If I were not such a huge Superman fan wanting to see Smallville in HD, I wouldn't be so driven right now. WKYT has the CW in standard def, but I want the good stuff. Antennaweb doesn't include WBKI for my address, so it doesn't suggest a good UHF antenna. I have seen alot of praise for the CM 4228 UHF antenna, so I figured it is a starting point.
What do you all suggest? Crazy for trying from inside an attic?
Juppers 12-08-06, 11:21 PM I can get WBKI with a CM7777 and a DB2, a bit smaller than half a 4228. But I am on the southwest side of Lexington, and my antennas are on the roof. My 4228 pulls in Louisville, but the signal will pixalate on occasion. Nothing too horrible. About the only way to find out is to give it a try.
mtallent 12-09-06, 12:28 AM The FCC has pre-empted restrictions on over the air antennas and satellite dishes up to 1 meter in diameter. Your deed restrictions for outside antennas has probably been nullified by this order. Here is a link for the document.-
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html
An antenna outside and as high as you can get is would be the best choice fro recption. I am west of Elizabethtown and get all the Louisville digital stations just fine about 55 miles from the towers. I also get WBKI, but it is not that far from me. I have a Radio Shack RU-190 VHF-UHF Yagi and the 7777 preamp about 25 feet up on my roof, no rotator it is aimed at Louisville.
I would read the FCC document to see what the size limitations are for broadcast TV antennas.

... I don't think there is any limitation on the size of UHF/VHF antennae
BenCJedi 12-09-06, 11:43 PM Quite possibly ... (crazy that is.) :)
Lol.. you have to be a little crazy with this hobby of pulling in free tv. Lots of trial and error. :)
Thanks Juppers for letting me know what equipment you have. I used to live behind Fayette Mall off Keithshire way area. I could get WBKI-analog very reasonably, but not sure if the same tower is responsible for their digital signal. I live about half a degree of latitude south of that location, but more eastward in Winchester now. I'll have to pull up one of those mapping sites and add some pushpins. Anyone know where physically the WBKI-DT tower is located?
... I don't think there is any limitation on the size of UHF/VHF antennae
The deed is certainly vague. It just says no antennas larger than 24". It doesn't refer to satellite dishes or rooftop OTA antennas. I'll check out that FCC ruling. I think I'll try for inside the attic for now.. at the very least I should be able to get KET, I believe. I hadn't had much luck with them with my homebrew antenna. I'm amazed how well it does on WDKY, WKYT, WTVQ and WLEX, even though I made it for WDKY-DT (@ VHF ch. 4). My house is on the lowest part of the neighborhood, but it is the tallest on the street (which puts it a hair above the next tallest next door). I'm probably not in the ideal place for WBKI-DT reception, but you never know exactly how these signals can snake and bounce around structures. There's the element of luck. Santa is probably bringing me antenna equipment and coax this year. :)
BenCJedi 12-10-06, 12:23 AM Just spotted the DB8
This thing is a UHF monster. Overkill for an attic?
http://antennasdirect.com/DB8_HD_Antenna.html
I guess it all depends on alot of factors (roof shingle material, obstructions, elevation, signal reflection and refraction)
I'm debating the CM 4228 or this DB8 for my situation (obtaining WBKI-DT). The DB8 is more than twice the cost of the CM4228. Also it may cause signal overload for the Lexington locals since particularly the WKYT, WTVQ/WLEX towers are a clear shot from Winchester.
Anyone in Mount Sterling picking up WBKI-DT? If so, can you describe your antenna, equipment and mounting?
EDIT:
According to this chart I found at
http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/comparing.html
A: CM 4228
S: DB8
http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/GainUHFraw.gif
Nearly exactly the same reception. It looks more likely I should go with the CM4228. It's less expensive anyway.
Also I found a map that shows the WBKI-DT tower right here (blue star):
http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapgen/gif?lon=-85.234444&lat=37.948333&iwd=750&iht=750&mark=-85.234444,37.948333,bluestar,WBKI-DT_BARDSTOWN_KY&on=water,miscell,counties,places,CITIES,&off=streets,GRID,shorelin&ht=1.5&wid=1.5
HDTVChallenged 12-10-06, 12:55 AM I'll have to pull up one of those mapping sites and add some pushpins. Anyone know where physically the WBKI-DT tower is located?
It's co-located with the analog site. The problem is that the digital antenna is currently mounted significantly lower than the originally planned height. Add adjacent channel/intermod distortion from WLEX analog into the mix and things could begin to get "interesting" for your location.
For the record, I can pull in WBKI-DT (at least before the fall atmospherics kicked in) using an un-amped CM4221 in the attic ... but I'm also 20-30mi closer to the tower than you.
There's no reason to go with the DB8 over 4228.
Juppers 12-10-06, 06:54 AM Just spotted the DB8
This thing is a UHF monster. Overkill for an attic?
http://antennasdirect.com/DB8_HD_Antenna.html
I would avoid that one.. Like you said, way more money and no performance gain.
Your best bet may be the Winegard 8800. It is alot lighter than the 4228, about the same cost, and has better performance than the 4228 on frequency 19. If signal overload becomes an issue for Lexington, you can get a Jointenna from http://www.warrenelectronics.com/Antennas/joiners.htm for about 30 bucks, use your existing setup for Lexington, and add in WBKI via that. That's what I had to do to avoid signal overload. My Lexington UHF antenna is actually a 7 inch piece of coax hanging from the 'Everything Else' side of the jointenna. I discovered the lack of a need for a Lexington antenna on accident when I had everything unhooked up there and got perfect signal on WLEX and WTVQ with just the bare coax sitting on the roof. WDKY and WKYT are picked up by the VHF antenna. I also have a custom notch filter to block out WLEX and WTVQ from being picked up by the 4228 that is for Louisville channels.
All of this is dependendant on if you can get WBKI at all of course. I would get Wineguard, see if you can pick up a signal indoors or outdoors. If no good, run to lowes and grab a CM7777 preamp. If still no signal, question answered. You could return the preamp, or play and see what you can get in other directions. :)
BenCJedi 12-11-06, 12:55 AM IIRC, the FCC rule does NOT apply when you are trying to get "distant stations." If there is a "local" CW station closer than WBKI to you, good luck with the neighbors and the lawsuits. :D
-Mike
PS: WBKI is located in Raywick, KY, as I recall from messing with my antenna adventures.
Yeah, there is a CW station on the .2 subchannel of WKYT, but it is only standard definition. It is excellant for direct-capture to DVD (perfect bitrate and resolution), however I wish it were HD. Hence my adventure to try to get WBKI-DT.
For some fun, I plotted most of the broadcaster's towers in the Lexington area. Here's the result:
http://s94980196.onlinehome.us/8602/Pictures/hdtv/Lex.Area.towers.jpg
If you'd like to generate your own map to see where you live in respect to these towers you too can map using GMT at:

Mike0616 is right. It is near Raywick, KY, both analog and digital channels. The point you have on that map for the analog channel is wrong. I know where you got that information. I have been there myself. I don't know what those coordinates mean, but I know analog and digital are together near Raywick, KY. Keep me posted about your reception on WBKI. I have gotten WBKI-DT at one time, and I can get WBKI analog channel practically everyday, not all that good though, but I do get it.

BenCJedi 12-11-06, 10:25 PM Santa allowed me to order the Winegard PR 8800 and Channel Master 7777 pre-amp. Also a Lowes $10 off $25 coupon came in the mail today, so I made short work of a clamp, some connectors, wall plate and 5' mount pipe. Unfortunately the 3 Lowes stores (2 Lex and the one out here in Winchester are shy of higher grade antenna equipment like the CM7777). I'm going the attic route for WBKI-DT (for now). Thanks for pointing out the lime green line on that graph showing the Winegard having a little more ummph than the CM4228 where needed. If I go outside with it, the lighter material should act like less of a sail boat.
I'll probably need to do the Jointenna thing, but I'll see what I can do with what will be under the tree for me.
Buckett 12-12-06, 04:11 PM Can anyone reccomend a local outfit where I can order/purchase an outdoor antenna and have them install it?
I have had a CM3021 w/preamp for a while now and have had problems receiving 41-1. A few days ago I fell 12' while messing with it. I am quite lucky to not have serious injuries from the fall. Anyway, I am tired of messing with it and wish to "subcontract" the OTA portion of my HD setup.
Any info/suggestions appreciated.

I used a company called action eletronics - Scotty did the installation. PM me for additional details if you want.

HDTVChallenged 12-29-06, 04:55 PM While randomly surfing last night, I noticed that the old 480i simulcast (3.2) has been deleted. The current line up is now 3.1 = NBC-HD, 3.2 WX plus, 3.3 = TheTube. I haven't watched enough to tell if there's any improvement on 3.1, but TheTube is actually watchable now, instead of being just a jumble of blocks.
MLGreene 12-30-06, 09:15 AM Hello everyone. I’m new here and I have a question. I just installed a new Sony HDTV as our family Christmas gift. I’m receiving several of the main Louisville digital TV stations and we are enjoying the TV using an outside antenna. The signal readings are good. I have one problem and it seems to be with WLKY 32.1. Every few seconds it seems, I hear a popping noise coming from what sounds like the right speaker. 32.1 is the only channel that seems to do this. 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 11.1, 15.1,2,3,4,5,6, 41.1 and 58.1 don’t seem to do this. I talked with the people I purchased the TV from and they think it maybe a network problem. But when one of the HD programs come on in the evening it seems like the problem goes away then when the news broadcast comes on or anytime a commercial in 4x3 come on I can hear the popping noise again. Has anyone else noticed this? I’m new to digital TV and not sure where to look for answers. Thanks Mike.
chuckmccky 12-30-06, 11:22 AM I get 32.1 vis over-the air antenna here in LaGrange. I have NOT had the problem you are describing. I would guess that it is the tunner on the TV. I watch 32.1 both through the tunner on Directv vcr and the tunner on my Sony HDTV.

Yep this seems to happen at times. I notice it a lot on the local newscasts and commercial breaks - never during CBS-HD programming. You may also notice that the audio often randomly cycles between DD5.1 and DD2.0 during non-network programming. The two issues are probably related.
MLGreene 12-30-06, 01:18 PM How can I tell when it cycles between DD5.1 and DD2.0? This popping noise seems to happen several times in one minuet. But I don't notice it during CBS-HD programs. Seems ok then. But yes I do notice it more during the news cast. Just now getting some time to play with it now that the Christmas rush is over. The pop is not real loud but I can tell its there most of the time.
Thanks for the replies.

HDTVChallenged 12-30-06, 01:41 PM How can I tell when it cycles between DD5.1 and DD2.0?
The indicator light on your (presumed) home theater receiver? :) You'll hear the sound field changing as well (assuming you're hooked up with a DD5.1 or better audio system.)
The bottom line is that's there's nothing wrong with your TV ... it's WLKY's problem.
MLGreene 12-30-06, 01:52 PM So does the DD5.1 and DD2.0 light on your receiver switch back and forth between the two modes a few times during a minuet of time?
MLGreene 12-30-06, 02:06 PM Just for clarification I’m talking about the popping noise coming from my right HDTV speaker on my TV. Not coming from my receiver. I suppose if I had my audio receiver on I would hear it there too. But about the only time I turn on the receiver is when we are watching a DVD movie. The noise I hear is from the TV speaker but only when watching 32.1.
HDTVChallenged 12-30-06, 04:31 PM So does the DD5.1 and DD2.0 light on your receiver switch back and forth between the two modes a few times during a minuet of time?
I suppose it could be that frequent ... I've never really timed it.
I suppose you're either going to have to take my word (have heard the pops) or chuck's (haven't heard them.) Pick yer poison. :)
mppatt01 12-30-06, 04:36 PM I'ver heard the pops during local feeds and it correlates with switching from 2.0 and 5.1. Are these the same pops you are hearing? don't know.
Not a problem for me as I don't watch local programming on 32.1
MLGreene 12-30-06, 05:04 PM I believe both you and Chuckmccky. I’m just trying to gather some information about what I have been hearing so I can come to some conclusion about my HDTV. I stumbled across this forum and thought it might be a good place to ask some questions. If many people here were experiencing the same problem with 32.1 then maybe someone would have an explanation to the problem. Just trying to gather some information. I’m glad to be getting some feedback from you and anyone else here.
Thanks
Mike
mppatt01 12-30-06, 05:09 PM Yeah, my previous post wasn't exacly a solution, but figured more input wouldn't hurt.
MLGreene 12-30-06, 05:40 PM Thanks for posting mppatt01. The more info the better. For local programming I have just been using the HDTV speakers, I don’t turn on the receiver unless I’m watching a DVD movie. So what I have been hearing is coming from the set itself. So I don’t know if the switching between dd5.1 and dd2.0 is what is causing my popping noise or not. Could be. Just trying to gather information.
Thanks
Mike
HDTVChallenged 12-31-06, 12:25 AM I watched some of the 11:30pm newscast (12/30) and DD mode cycled from 2.0 to 5.1 a few minutes in. It stayed at 5.1 until I gave up @ sports. There were some minor "snaps and pops" mostly from the RF, but a few from the LF speaker. You had to be listening pretty close to hear them. I have heard much louder snaps and pops in the past ... usually accompanied by lack of (or very faint) audio from the RF.
MLGreene 12-31-06, 08:30 AM I did notice that the audio from the right speaker was not at the same level as the left speaker when watching 32.1 like during a newscast and I can tell when an HD broadcast comes on because the sound from the right speaker comes alive so to speak. During non-HD programming I do here some clicking from time to time from the left speaker but it seems to be more noticeable from the right speaker. Sometimes they are very noticeable and sometimes they aren’t but they can get annoying. I guess WLKY is aware for their problem and is working on a fix?
Thanks for the replies
Mike
mppatt01 12-31-06, 02:11 PM I've been watching the bengals game on 32-1. Audio is terrible, lots of popping and switching from 2.0 to 5.1. Boo 32-1. Yay Beer.
William Smith 01-01-07, 01:12 PM Don't assume anything.. I doubt that engineering is aware of the problem. Monitoring and chasing Dolby problems is a real pain..
I can assure you that they have a skeleton crew on for the weekend.
Call them, ask for engineering and at least leave a message describing the problem..
Be part of the solution... not just complain about the problem..
HDTVChallenged 01-01-07, 01:23 PM Don't assume anything.. I doubt that engineering is aware of the problem. Monitoring and chasing Dolby problems is a real pain...
I have no doubt of that ... but this has been going on pretty much since they got the network 5.1 working (seems like at least a year.) I've just considered it the price of getting DD5.1 on CBS-HD. ;) :D
If it's working when it counts most, why mess with it? :)
William Smith 01-02-07, 10:15 AM For the same reason I pulled my hair out here.... Dolby assumes that stations will break the audio back into 3 AES streams for routing inside the plant..and re encode them for transmission..(NOT). As a result there is no "sync" byte for the metadata that indicated 2.0 or 5.1... This causes multiple issues including drifting lip sync to the audio decoders locking up ( resulting in a high pitched squeal on air).
So most stations lock into one mode or the other to minimize disruptions..

Yep ... my fear was that WLKY might just decide the "best" (aka easiest) solution would be to forego DD5.1 and just lock the encoder at 2.0. ;)

Speaking of KET ... It's good to see that progress has been made on the KET4-HD program guide (via DirecTV.) There was a glitch over the holidays, but the Jan-07 data looks good so far. :) :)
William Smith 01-02-07, 01:43 PM The guide data issue was finding the right person at Direct TV to talk to and explaining the issues... We lost the EPG server here over the holidays that feeds all the guide services including PSIP and didn't finish mopping that up until this morning...
Guy1in10 01-03-07, 02:17 AM For reference I live in Jeffersonville Indiana in Zip Code 47130 just across the river from Louisville Kentucky. If I'm posting in the wrong thread, please point me to where I should post this question. I'm a novice when it comes to message board and forum posting. Thanks!
I am only 8 miles from the broadcast towers and all the stations on in the UHF range with less than a 10 degree directional difference...so one would think I should just buy an over the air antenna for those channels. I've now bought and tried 3 different Over The Air ATSC antennas including an RCA with a 45 db amplifier, one without an amp and a Silver Sensor antenna that everyone says is tops for OTA HD ATSC. All three will bring in HD versions of NBC and ABC with the Series 3 but the picture drops in and out, I get pixelation and the audio drops in and out.
So I'm seeking advice on how to get unencrypted local network HD digital channels (ABC, NBC, FOX, CW, CBS) from the analog basic cable in from the wall using TiVo Series 3's QAM tunning capability.
I'm able to get these channels as a -cable- signal: CBS Channel 32.1, Fox 41.1, CW 34.1. Frustratingly, I still can't get NBC 3.1 (WAVE 3) and ABC 11.1 (WHAS 11) as a cable signal. I feel like I'm so close to saving $60 bucks a month on an unnessecary cable bill but I can't get the Series 3 TiVo to tune HD versions of NBC and ABC through my cable from the wall.
I have tried mannually punching in 3-1 and 11-1 on the TiVo remote with each of the following set up changes and still no luck.
In reading other message boards it was also suggested I tried a signal amplifier and that did not work. The other suggestion I read was to try using a 2 way splitter and spilt the cable from the wall and put one end in the -antenna in- of Series 3 and one in the -cable in- of the series 3. Desperate to get this to work I tried that and it did not work either.
I also tried re-running -Guided Setup- as -cable only-, then -cable and antenna- and about 5 or 6 times and also re-running -Channel Scans- 5 or 6 times and nothing helps bring in NBC and ABC through the cable line. With each setup change I've tried to find 11.1 and 3.1 in the channel list as -cable- signal but no luck.
I even tried 906 and 908 which is the channels that bring in the HD versions of our local NBC and ABC affliates on the Digital Cable Pack but that didn't work either.
I called TiVo tech support and of course they were of no help at all. The rep. suggested I try changing the cables I use for Series 3 to the TV. ?!? I knew that wouldn't help but I tried it anyway and changed from HDMI to Componet and of course that didn't help at all. Again, I'm so desperate to get this work that I'm trying anything. The other thing the TiVo Tech. Support person said was that with my setup and zip code, channel line up TiVo is viewing 3.1 and 11.1 as an atenna channels. I asked her if there's a way to force TiVo to look for 3.1 as a cable signal and she said she was not aware of how to do that.
A side note, my big screen TV is HD capable but did not included an integrated ATSC tuner. So before I bought the Series 3 I bought the new Samsung set-top HD tuner that has an unencrypted QAM tuner. It was about $200.00 With the Samsung, I was easily able to tune in the HD versions of NBC and ABC (3.1 and 11.1) through just the basic cable line and it worked great! I'm amazed that a $200 set top box was capable of doing more than the $800 retail TiVo Series 3! I was really happy with the Samsung unit but I returned it because I missed having TiVo and being able to record a show and come back to watch it later at my convienance. I'm not always home with my shows are on. So I returned the Samsung and decided to bite the bullet and get the Series 3 TiVo.
I tried typing in 55.1 for WHAS and each time I do the TiVo changes it to 11.1 which is of course the antenna signal that drops out.
I can't tell you all how frustrated I am. I've spent hours and hours trying to make this work so I don't end up paying the cable company thousands of dollars when I mainly only watch netowrk TV and all I want is do is be able to watch the HD broadcasts of my favorite network shows and record them with series 3. If you all have any other ideas, I would be so extremely grateful. I've be willing to pay someone if they can help me fix this. THANK YOU!
Have a good day.
Sincerely,
Determined To Try To Get This To Work in Jeffersonville!
Brad
@Guy1in10
Don't know anything about Tivos, will it search for HD signals using the QAM tuner?
Who's the cable provider?
HD-QAM for Insight is:
71.1 WHAS
71.6 KET4 after 8:PM
72.1 WLKY
72.2 WAVE
74.2 WBKI
80.3 WDRB
Juppers 01-16-07, 03:18 PM No problem with 34.1 here in Lexington. Signal still strong.
