All you need is a bit of 75 ohm coax wire, a soldering iron, and 3 RCA male plugs. This mod is Win9X only, since we don't know the XP registry keys yet. And if you are reading this, I assume you know what you are doing. If not, don't do it, because you could ruin some very expensive equipment.

First, using the 75 ohm wire, solder:
-----------------------------------
VGA pin 1 -> Female RCA Pr lead
VGA pin 2 -> Female RCA Y lead
VGA pin 3 -> Female RCA Pb lead

VGA pin 6 -> Female RCA Pr ground
VGA pin 7 -> Female RCA Y ground
VGA pin 8 -> Female RCA Pb ground
-----------------------------------

Second, add this key to the registry (win9x only):
-----------------------------------
under the thread
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\Driver\0000\DAL]

add
"HDTVRULE_HDTVCONNECTED" =hex:01,00,00,00

and also
"HDTVRULE_HDTVGDOENABLE"=hex:01,00,00,00
"HDTVRULE_HDTVSIGNALFORMAT"=hex:01,00,00,00
if they don't exist, which they won't, if you use a radeon 7xxx or 9000.
-----------------------------------

Third, connect your TV with the S-video cable. Disconnect your monitor. Reboot, making sure NO DISPLAYS are connected EXCEPT the S-video. After showing the scrolling black-and-white bootup screen on the TV, all S-video output should stop. You are now outputting in YPrPb. To verify, connect your standard VGA monitor, and if everything is green, the modification has been successful. Now all you need to do is plug it into the component in's on your TV.
-----------------------------------

Last, download PowerStrip (http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm), load it up, go to Color profiles -> Configure, then uncheck "Write directly to palette DAC" and "Enable color correction" (edit-> you only need to uncheck these two settings if you are using an older version of PowerStrip -- 3.18 and below, i think. Newer versions do not need to be adjusted). Use the information in these forums to configure the output resolution/timings to your liking.

Note: PowerStrip is actually necessary. After adding the registry key, the Display->Advanced control panel will disappear, which is where you find the YPrPb configuration dialog. It's a bug in Catalyst. :(
-----------------------------------

Quick explanation of what's happening here.

To support the ATI HDTV dongle, the YPrPb signal is sent directly through the DVI port on the Radeon 9000/9500/9700 after the dongle is detected by Catalyst. Catalyst then requires you to reboot, enabling YPrPb output to BOTH the DVI port and the VGA port. This is actually because Catalyst needed to support the 8500 VGA dongle as well as the new DVI ones... so by default both ports are always enabled for HDTV on all cards. This is in our favor. Because of the laziness of the Cat developers, ALL Radeon cards (not just the one supported by the dongle) can output YPrPb.

The HDTVRULE_HDTVCONNECTED regkey is then added by us, forcing Catalyst to bypass the dongle DDC detection, and output YPrPb anyway. So then all we do is take the YPrPb signal being sent through the first 3 pins of the VGA port and jack directly into it. Add some RCA's for flavor, ground them, and -- POOF -- your Radeon just got component-out for the cost of a happy meal at mcdonalds.

Why do this instead of just buying the dongle from ATI? Well, first of all, I own a Radeon 9000 PRO 64MB, which ATI currently sells no dongle for and never will. Second, the dongles that ATI offers are made for use on only one card, so if you had two different cards in two different pc's, you'd need two different dongles (90$ with their cheapest shipping). And Third, if you went all out and spent as much money as you could on the best parts possible for this mod, you'd still spend a whole lot less than you'd pay for one dongle, and might even result in better quality. Enjoy!

(thanks to all the people who posted bits and pieces of info about this in the rage3D forums, you were a big help)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
edit - less permanent, slightly more expensive (+$3) solution:

Buy an HD15 male (VGA) connector (just the connector, no wires, open pins) from your nearest electronics shop. Solder as in the configuration above, connect the HD15 plug to the VGA port on your Radeon, and the RCA's to the corresponding component inputs on the TV. This avoids soldering directly to the board ;)

Also, according to reports in this thread, third party VGA->Component adapters (not transcoders, big difference) will also work if you don't want to build one.

something like this: http://www.optomausa.com/public/Product_Accessory/42-81908-001.asp

DVI-A to Component connectors will work also if your card has DVI support, since the signal is sent to both ports on the vidcard.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Test system:

Athlon XP 1800+
256MB DDR 2100
Powercolor Evil Commando Radeon 9000Pro 64MB
-using Catalyst 2.3 6166 reference drivers
Win98SE

Cool! :)

Is it possible to output 1024x768 by component?

Well, treat the connection as if it were the ATI dongle. Catalyst is going to think it's using the dongle, so it's going to act like it. Anything you can't do with the dongle will still apply, like certain timings/resolutions -- ahem ATI, 540p? -- so keep that in mind.

It's still an HDTV connection, don't forget! Any mode your TV doesn't support won't display correctly, if at all.

Hey,

I would recommend getting a VGA output connector to solder the wired to rather than modifing the actual card. This way the project is a DIY dongle rather than a modified video card. Either way, people should realize the danger in home made electronics and know what they are doing before they do it.

Also, I think it's cool that a DIY dongle can be made but I don't see how that relates to your suggestion that the ATI dongle is "****." It was nice for ATI to offer the dongle and if they had not then such a project would not exist.

Now, if I only had a use for Component output.

Good Luck,

Brian

How would this connect to the DVI output on an 8500DV AIW ?? It uses a DVI-VGA adaptor to connect to a VGA monitor ?

I hadn't thought of that.

I don't know if it would work, but you could try my less permanent method above, and connect the HD15 male to the DVI-VGA adapter. Might work, but i can't guarantee it.

You could also either build a DVI-component straight-through adapter, or buy one (they're about 20 bucks). Google for "DVI to Component adapter" -- i got some good results from that.

I'm working on another, cheaper solution.

The reason I asked about 1024x768 is that some DLP-projectors reduce the color whel speed to synch with 50Hz when PAL is played through the video inputs (component, S-video, composite), but runs it in synch with 60Hz when used with a HTPC through the RGB- or DVI-port. This can cause micro-stuttering.

If it was possible to output 1024x768 by component and if the projector could take the signal then it would be possible to take advantage of the good scaling of a HTPC and the synchronized color wheel speed. The picture quality would probably not be as good as with RGB though, it would be a compromise, but worth a try at least.

Could a cable like this (http://www.optomausa.com/public/Product_Accessory/42-81908-001.asp) be connected to a radeon and apply the registry hack? This would save much time and effort attempting to solder etc.

Thanks.

your post is asking the same as Tom's, so i'll answer both:

according to a diagram i found of a homemade cable that follows the VGA-YPrPb standard, the pins are the same, so then your answer is: most likely. At least ATI followed some kind of standard...

I'm going to try to find one today, i'll post later.

This is what I want to know...... :) (i'm always asking the odd questions...)

I will be getting a My HD Card soon and will need to display to both the desktop and straight to the TV...... do you think the adpater will work through the pass through of the MyHD Card? really not much to stopping it from working I would think...... (just afraid to do something wrong)

Also since this home made breakoutcable has no switches to select the resolutions capable how does it work in other res other than 480p...?

I have mine wide open right now.....

Does that registry entry have any effect in Safe Mode?

I was wondering how I'd get back to seeing the display if I screwed it up somehow.

edit: and that's a nifty idea about about just using the pass-through from one of the PCHD cards. I hadn't though of that. Of course then you maybe still need a VGA->component cable to bypass your AA 9A60 but that's what I got it for to begin with.

I just wish I could get 800x600i and 1024x768i without major underscan! :)

I cant even use those resolutions because of the massive underscan :(

I also wish I could find a way to stop powerstrip from diableing tilebased rendering when interlaced resolutions are added :( would give a nice speed boost.

What I was speaking of on the MyHD card was to be able to have my HDTV Adapter hooked on the pass through cable to see my windows desktop and the HD Overlay (or however it works) while in windows, and then also have the other part of the MY HD Card hooked straight to the TV so I can switch between either way of viewing. Otherwise all I will get is just the MyHD Card straight to the TV and ATI Card straight to the TV without being able to view the TV on desktop ...hope that makes more sence (I always know waht I want to do but can never describe it....

Doesn't safe mode bypass the installed driver for std. vga mode anyway? I would think safemode would be ok since it wouldn't use those registry settings.

Unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast with 1080i sets and only 540 progressive scan lines to work with. Any vertical resolution over 540 must be interlaced, and vertical resolutions closer to 1080i will fill the screen more than 600 or 768.....the difference must be made up in the vertical blanking area.

This is how I have it connected, except the Radeon VGA is connected to a transcoder. HTPC in one component input, MyHD (component out via breakout cable & set to YPbPr) in another and you get the overlay on the desktop by selecting "using separate monitor".

I just compared the transcoder to straight RGBHV and it was almost identical. The transcoder MAYBE had a tad less contrast. I know the transcoder is $200 but the flexibility and control, combined with Powerstrip, is well worth it.

Karnis, what I would like to find out is if the HDTV adapter from ATI could work after the pass through... inplace of the transcoder.....
I ask since this now seems to be more of a regisrty software setting as opposed to a hardware interface to switch over to the HDTV display modes.

Also one very nice display mode I use is 1280x960i I dont know if this is derived from 1080i settings or not but I have no overscan/underscan on it, only that virtual desktop gets in my way from using it as a standard dektop mode. I still cant get other resolutions displayed in it though that would be great.

Right now for 800x600 I used the 864x648 timings so I could see the menu in NFS:HP2 :)

I've enclosed the ATI registry entries from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\

This is WinXP Pro running on a Shuttle with a Radeon 9000 "value edition," which I picked up at Fry's for $99. I'm ready to go with my YPrPb cable, so any advice appreciated. Otherwise, I'm going to try adding the HDTV registry entry in a few places to see what happens.

richardkaufmann
01-12-03, 07:55 PM
I tried finding DALRULE in the Control Class entries in the registry, and placing the HDTV key there. No luck, perhaps because:

* It's the wrong place in the registry
* The hack doesn't work on the 9000, XP, and/or my machine
* It particularly doesn't work when I have a Plug-and-Play flat panel attached to the screen.

Anyway, I added the entry (see attached), and the machine just happily rebooted just like nothing happened. I had hoped that my monitor would freak out -- and that I'd then move this whole rig to the TV.

Help appreciated. I'm going to give this up for the day.

Yea. In my original post i noted that resolutions are limited by what the TV can support, not the dongle. The dongle is nothing, really --- its only purpose is to provide the output interface, and tell the Cats that an HDTV is connected. It's a switch, nothing more.

Using powerstrip you could theoretically get almost any resolution to work, as long as the video card can OUTPUT that mode. Modes like 540p are not even supported on the hardware, which is why the dongle specs don't support it. Hope that helps.

nintari

the original dongle specs supported it but it was never officially implimented. However running 480p res in 540p res works great...

My biggest complaint is that I cant disable the virtual desktop effect. I have this happen with many resolutions that I create, odd thing is if you go to the right or down its all black space, nothing there but virtual desktop is enabled..... really annoying. But luckily it doesnt effect 3d games (except for ps diableing tile based rendering when you add a interlaced res spent many many e-mails with entech over this with no fix, but again all my games still run smoothly)

on that screen shot of 1024x768 notice he is overscanned though :)

Karnis
01-12-03, 09:19 PM
Radeon HW does support 540p resolutions via the VGA output, and nintari says he gets 480p @540p timings via the dongle.
Nintari: the monitor driver you select can have an effect on virtual desktop. What monitor driver are you using?

RTK
01-12-03, 09:29 PM
I get back from CES and miss the important news ;)

I had always thought the resolution limitations were related to driver support when the video card was in YPrPb mode vs. VGA output which allowed powerstrip custom settings. Can anyone confirm that powerstrip will allow custom resolutions/timings with this registry method?

as with most, I would love to output 540p in YPrPb mode, which via the current drivers and HD component adapter is not possible.

Karnis: unfortunately, the virtual desktop is defaulted to when resolutions other than the 480p, 720p, or 1080i (and their overscan versions) are chosen with the dongle.

nintari
01-12-03, 09:39 PM
you dont get to select the monitor drivers at all for the adapter :(
I actually got the idea from reading your guides long ago lol, I was tierd of having 480p resolutions with overscan and when I addeda 540p res in powerstrip it seemed soo much clearer! However the 540p resolutions would enable desktop panning, so I tried to put 640x480, 720x480 in a 540p mode and it worked with no desktop panning :) However I couldnt get DVD movies to play because I was no longer at 480p timings, downloaded DVDIdle and havent looked back.

I would still like the actual 540p resolutions to work right though without the virtual desktiop getting in the way!

I'm surprised there is not also some known registry entry for the virtual desktop. It seems the way ATI would do it.

Tried this without success...

1) Entered registry key in WinME.

2) Used 2 RGB breakout cables, connecting the R,G,B lines, not the H,V lines.
Connected one end to 8500 VGA , other to LT150, its component lines are the same.
Reset desktop to 640x480

3) Rebooted no picture on LT150, plugged monitor in, it worked, so was outputting normal RGBHV.

RTK

a registry entry to remove the virtual desktop would be very welcome for the dongle although its just part of the problem. the driver in YPrPb mode will only display 480p, 720p or 1080i. By this I mean even if you setup a custom resolution, lets say 540p for example, and force a 540p timing with powerstrip, the output will only display 480 lines at a time(thin 30 pixel black bars top and bottom) and virtual desktop the 540p within the 480 display lines. quite annoying!

I'm a little confused with the resolutions people are reporting possible. The last I heard (I don't have a dongle) is that you can get just about any desktop resolution out of the dongle that your monitor/TV supports, but the overlay is resticted to 480p. Are people actually able to get >480P using the dongle, or this hack, on the overlay (i.e. DVD playback?)

Thanks,
MR

RTK
01-13-03, 01:26 AM
the driver support for the dongle (maybe as of this thread I should say YPrPb mode) limits the output resolution to 480p, 720p and 1080i. Slightly reduced resolutions for each of these are also supported to compensate for your display overscan. Overlays work fine at each of these resolutions, albeit a little quirky a times. I find once in a while that I need to start the overlay in 640x480 and then switch to 1080i to get it working but then the overlay is fine. DVD playback and Dscaler look great at 1080i however for desktop apps or webbrowsing, 540p would be much preferred but unfortunately it is not currently an option.

Simple. That regkey is Win9x specific, it wont work on 2k, ME, NT, or XP. Unfortunately i don't know the key for any other version, in fact, afaik nobody does yet. I've contacted the author of the omega drivers to see if he can compile me a list of all the regkeys... since i too would rather boot to XP than 9x.

I read both of your posts and i think i'm prepared to answer.

First, you can use powerstrip to set the output resolution/timings to whatever you like... you said it yourself, the dongle is just a switch.

Second, i see no problems with a passthrough, as long as the MyHD card is doing all the output to the TV. If not, you won't be able to do a passthrough and loop back into the ATI card for output, because the same exact signal is being sent to both the VGA and DVI ports. I don't know anything about HD cards though, but your theory is sound.

RTK
01-13-03, 02:49 AM
Nintari, I understand exactly what you want to do with your MyHD loopback cable. If a registry keys exists for 2k/XP which will force YPrPb mode then you should have no problem sending the video card output thru the loopback cable to a YPrPb breakout cable on the back of the MyHD card which will let you switch back and forth without any problem. I actually tried this after booting up the PC with the dongle connected and then replaced it with the loopback cable and was able to use the single output cable from the MyHD card to the display without any problems.... except I couldnt reboot without the video display switching back to VGA. A registry entry would solve this issue and make connections to the display much simpler.

I've now upgraded to the official Catalyst 3.0's on my XP box, and noticed that setup calls the RV250 (for the clock speed) thread from the setup infs, when installing for a Radeon 9000 (what i have). This thread doesn't contain the necessary registry entries for the HDTV output, which is why i never found them -- 2.3 must have had these added by default, which is why my 9000 Pro worked without setup modification.

Under the thread for the R200 (8500 chip) i found these entries:

HKR,, HDTVRULE_HDTVGDOENABLE, %REG_DWORD%, 1
HKR,, HDTVRULE_HDTVSIGNALFORMAT, %REG_DWORD%, 1

Bingo. The keys would be HDTVRULE_HDTVGDOENABLE and HDTVRULE_HDTVSIGNALFORMAT, respectively.

So, to get the 9000 to support output in YPrPb (which it supposedly cant), just cut and paste these entries into the RV250 thread. The XP inf is named CX_06891.inf, and is under the directory C:\ATI\support\wxp-w2k-radeon-7-81-021213a-006891E\Driver\2KXP_INF on my pc. I haven't figured out what the values should be for these entries yet, but maybe others can mess with them as well.

Once this is determined, we can refer back to the original post and hopefully get things working in XP.

I need the help of any ATI HDTV dongle users. Make sure your dongle is enabled and you are outputting to TV. Open regedit, go to edit->find and search for "HDTV". You will probably get a lot of matches if you keep searching. The ones i want can be found on the local machine tab under CurrentControlSet\Services\ati2mtag and CurrentControlSet\Control\Video. You'll know which ones i mean when you search. Keep hitting f3 till you get to a key under either of these threads.

If the values you're finding are all 0x00000001, those are the defaults. Ignore those. Keep searching until you find one or more of the "HDTV" keys with a different value than this.

Once found, export the entire thread that the key is located under and post it here please. Thanks,

Tried with Win98, no go...

Win98, R8500, Cat 3.0

1) Set resolution to 640x480, Added registry entry
2) Rebooted

It reboots to normal VGA mode not HDTV, and you lose the advanced display properties. You have to delete the entry to get them back.

If you have any suggestions to try let me know

(Was neat to see Win98 on a P4-2400, wow it boots fast!)

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=207493&perpage=20&pagenumber=1

The interest is because I have a 9700 that I would like to provide component out through the VGA connector. I have spent tens of hours with my WinXP computer (SP1), ATI support, various cables and connectors, and a stock 9700 card as well as a 9500 MP-1 card (the "Mike Parker" mod) w/Cat 3 and then Cat 4.

For what it is worth I have concluded the following:
1) It is critical to differentiate between the different cards and the appropriate dongles - the DVI-Component dongle is for the 9700/9500/8500 AIW cards (the "9700/9500 dongle") and the VGA-Component dongle is for the 8500 non-AIW cards (the "8500 dongle"). When you refer to the cards and dongles, please make it clear to which card and dongle you are referring.
2) The 9700/9500 dongle (DVI-I to Component), once installed, can be pulled off to enable component out through the DVI-I connector by use of the DVI-VGA adapter.
3) Component output is not available after restarting WinXP once the dongle is not attached. In other words the 9700/9500 card looks for the dongle each time it starts.
4) Installation of the 9700/9500 dongle, whether connected to a monitor or not, does not enable the VGA connection for component out.
5) The 9700/9500 dongle (DVI-I to component), once installed, cannot be pulled off to enable component out through the VGA connector. This is true no matter what order the cables and/or dongle are connected or disconnected, and whether or not they system is rebooted before, during, or after.
6) Installation of the 9700/9500 dongle disables all output from the VGA and the S-Video connectors. The ATI site is correct when it states that, "Component Output using the HDTV Video Component Video Adapter is a single display feature and will not work simultaneously with TV Output or with a standard monitor. ... The only exception is with the ALL-IN-WONDER® 9700 Series."
7) Because of the above, it is clear that the 9700/9550 dongle acts differently on those cards than the 8500 dongle (VGA to component) acts on the 8500. In other words - the 9700/9500 DVI-I-Component dongle works only with the DVI connector on the 9700, while the 8500 VGA-Component dongle works only with the VGA connector on the 8500.
8) Component output from the 9700 apparently uses both video (monitor and TV) output circuits/RAMDACS. I cannot provide technical/computerese background for this or the reasons for this, but I have spent hours going through the ATI website, various connections, and my own notes and logic charts and it is clear that there is some sort of "rearranging" of the circuitry to enable component output. This involves all three facilities - the VGA output, DVI-derived VGA output, and S-Video output circuitry.
9) All of the above leave open a definitive answer to the question of whether use of the 8500 VGA-Component dongle can be used on the 9700 VGA connector to enable component out. Based upon all of my experience, however, I am 98% certain that the 8500 dongle will not work with the 9700 card.

The bottom line is that the only way to get component out right now is through the dongle that is designed for the particular card being used. While it might be possible for ATI and/or a hacker to change the software on the 9700/9500 and 8500 series cards to enable some other method of component output, I do not think that merely editing the Window registry will provide the same result.

http://radeon2.ru/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000419-3.html

The thread above mentioned that they were using DriverPack Radeon2.Ru ver. 2.1 (based on 9039 for W9x) and here is the link:
http://mr-1677.v-mirror.spb.ru/drivers/win9x/win-9x-9039_rad2.exe

It also involved three registry keys and here is the link:
http://webhost.bridgew.edu/ylam/radeon9x.reg

Then Shu created http://www.radeon2.ru/konkurs_2/ypbpr.html and he was using 8500LE with this Win98SE + this driver:
http://mirror2.ati.com/drivers/wme-radeon-4-13-01-9050-efg.exe

I guess that Win98SE should work but 2K/XP would not accept those registry keys. We also know that 8500 and 9000 series without dongle can be tricked and configured to output YPrPb.

9500 and 9700 series are somewhat different from 9000 series so we still need more experiments.

Stephen Orr mentioned that 8500 series were the first Radeon with YPrPb capabilities. Suppose that was true, maybe the older Radeon will not output YPrPb at all.

We already knew that all Radeon flavors share the the same drivers but the old ones may not have the bells and whistles of their successors. (e.g. adaptive deinterlacing of 8500 series should be more advanced that before)

You and I appear to be on the same page. Anyway, those keys exist in XP, they're even in the XP setup inf's (read my post above)

but i noticed that in the win9x keys, they're all binary. In xp, the exact same keys are DWORDS. I have a feeling it's just a combination of these three keys in some way in some thread somewhere that makes it work (whew!). I'm going to experiment a little more, but basically the keys in XP, if i'm correct, should look like this:

HDTVRULE_HDTVCONNECTED 0x00000001
HDTVRULE_HDTVGDOENABLE 0x00000001
HDTVRULE_HDTVSIGNALFORMAT 0x00000001

or 3 DWORD keys with their values set to hexadecimal 1.

Most likely, these will be contained in the ati2mtag service configuration dialog, or in the controlsets for video, or both. Hope this helps.

Is there any value in comparing the registry or any other configuration file for differences when the card is outputting VGA vs. YPrPb ?

yes, i think so. If any registry changes are applied after the dongle is attached, those are probably the settings that tell catalyst to change its signal and switch to HDTV mode.

Maybe we can get some help from PowerStrip forum
http://pub28.ezboard.com/fentechfrm8

erodim@mail.ru did the Russian translation for PowerStrip so he may know the meaning of those Radeon2.ru pages.

BTW, the AIW 9700 is bundled with a proprietary component cable instead of a dongle. Do you think that can give us a hint or something?

The ridiculous thing is, I wouldn't MIND paying for the ATI adapter if they would sell it through some retail outlets... but paying nearly the cost of the item for ground shipping is just absurd! If you can make this happen a lot of us will be VERY VERY happy. I really don't want to go through and do a nother win98 install right after I switched my whole system over to NTFS and a fresh XP install (particularly since everything I have that I WANT to output onto my HDTV is on the NTFS space) but I will if I have to! :)

As a result of my (way too extensive) work with my cards and adapters and dongles, I have an 8500 VGA-component dongle for which I will have no further use (along with an unneeded VGA-component transcoder).

You are welcome to it for the basic dongle cost plus $1.50 mailing if you would like. You are correct - the $25.00 I paid for shipping was an expensive experiment ... :)

I appreciate that - unfortunately I have a 9700pro and I am pretty sure the 9000+ models won't work with the 8500 dongle. :( Otherwise I would snap it up. Although I'm kind of thinking maybe I should just get a transcoder anyway. I liked the idea of using ATI's dongle because it's the only way I know of to run 1080i within Win XP, but I'm getting so CONFUSED now!

actually, with this i can help. It's really easy to get the 8500 vga-component adapter to work with the 9000 in Windows XP --- i've done it.

Go back to the original howto and just skip the first step (building and soldering the dsub-component connector) and instead add the last two regkeys (not the HDTVCONNECTED one). Those keys are the only things telling Catalyst that the card is HDTV capable.

You can even verify this (it's in all Catalyst driver installs) by going to the C:\ATI\support\wxp-radeon-6-13-10-6166-efg\XP_INF (or whichever driver version the dir points to), open CX_05727.INF (wont be 05727 if you have a different driver, just substitute these numbers with your version). Search for "HDTVRULE" and you'll notice that you get results (the two keys we're adding) in the 9700 and 8500 setup threads. Those keys are added by default only when installing the 8500/9700, and comparisons between the 9000 and 8500 thread show little differences -- the chips are very closely related (minus a texel engine, hehe).

Also, you can verify by hex editing ati2mtag.sys in \windows\system32\drivers and searching for the same.

Now, the reason this works is because the HDTVCONNECTED flag is not needed anymore (which is what's stopping us from using the mod in XP), because the dongle will be detected by catalyst. Catalyst will see the registry switches, and enable it. No more forcing output.

But, i was avoiding doing this because the dongles are still quite expensive. Shipping at $15?! I live in the same state, and the thing is the size of my big toe... which is why i wrote the howto to begin with :D
-----------------------------------------

by the way, i appreciate all the support this thread has generated. I referred the omega guy and some Catalyst people from Rage3D here, and the more interest they see the more likely they are to help. Keep it comin!

I modified the .inf in the XP display driver installation directory to add the two HDTV flags to the RV200 ( I have an AIW 7500 ). After reinstalling the display driver and control panel I get a bunch of display resolutions under advanced that were not there before, but no YPrPb under Displays. I ordered the DVI to YPrPb dongle from ATI so I'm hoping Catalyst will recognize the dongle and the RV200 is capable of YPrPb output.

Anyone with the 8500 know if flicker filtering is available on 480i component output? I have an old Toshiba SDTV with component inputs and it doesn't do 480P.

Thanks.

The dongle provides slightly better overall performance than a transcoder - a barely detectable increase in detail/resolution, but a noticeable reduction in overall (video) noise and the maintenance of color accuracy. The dongle is a better choice, especially from the standpoint of "the most direct path is the best option." Consumer transcoders make use of rudimentary designs and very poor power regulation/filtering so that they should be avoided if possible.

The only big consideration with the dongle is that it precludes dual-monitor capability when attached.

bump, we need more support!

My interest in this subject is to connect the DVI port of the 8500DV directly to the YPrPb input jacks on my HDTV. I'm hoping to improve the picture quality by bypassing the ATI dongle and 3 right angle RCA connectors (The dongle plus straight through video connections on the back of the HTPC would chew up the required 1" clearance between the front of the HTPC and the glass front door of my TV stand). Currently I have slight ringing noise in the video signal which is especially annoying to look at for 720p display modes.

I have my DVI-A to component video cable on order and I expect to receive this part sometime next week. From looking at the picture for this part, I wonder just how good the picture quality is with thin 75 ohm coax wire. I was under the impression that video cables had to be thick to retain picture quality. Did I succumbed to marketing hype? I've bought premium component video cables from RadioShack and they are thick!

If I read this correctly you are saying a standard 9000 (I have a Sapphire 128MB 9000) with the VGA component adapter and editing the INF before install or adding the two keys manually will work no questions?

Will any of the DVI adapters work with the 9000 (keeping the VGA port free)? Any stability problems, or any chance ATI will look for this or any other mod in the next driver version to keep us from utilizing this?

I'm curious if your observation directly includes the Key Digtal VTCA-2 model w/ VGA passthru. I've compared it to the direct RGBHV inputs on my Mits HDTV and have found the image quality to be VERY close, with the transcoder seemingly having a tad less contrast, after checking several AVIA test patterns. Again, just curious!

I'm not too sure about the 7xxx's. According to some loose translations on radeon2.ru's forums, people have gotten the 7's and the 9's to work with YPbPr in Win98 just fine -- without a dongle. So although i can't verify it, it's pretty likely that it will work.

Karnis -

I may not have a satisfying answer for you as it is, "yes, but ..."

About a year ago, in anticipation of an upcoming ISF calibration session, I borrowed a KD unit to compare with the Audio Authority model that I own, with the idea that I might purchase one if I could see a difference. I did not. (And other than the horizontal displacement issue, I could not tell a difference between the AA and the RCA VHDC300.)

But - this was prior to the use of an HTPC and the ATI 9700 card (the calibration was a "touch-up" and did not change things too much). The HTPC/9700 has greatly improved the quality of the image, however, so that the use of a transcoder (AA) is a liability compared to the 9700 dongle.

I would certainly allow for the possibility that the 9700 would reveal some shortcomings with the AA unit that are not present int the KD unit. My comment, however, was based upon my earlier comparison together with my belief that add-on boxes are a necessary evil at best, and my dislike for wall-plug outboard power supplies and the problems that they tend to create.

Hope that provides some reference.

Really, if you have the option DVI is the best. It's fairly easy to setup if you have a TV with a DVI input.

Does this mean if I already have a DVI to Component cable, all I need to do is add the "HDTVRULE_..." key to my registry and it wil work?

I've compared it to the direct RGBHV inputs on my Mits HDTV and have found the image quality to be VERY close, with the transcoder seemingly having a tad less contrast, after checking several AVIA test patterns. Again, just curious! Hi Wayne,
If you've got a Mits that can do RGBHV, why bother with component at all? Unless you're using a red-push attenuator I can see no advantage to transcoding to component. I got red of my red-push attenuator once performing the I2C hack to correct my color decoder, so I'm quite happy with RGBHV.

helzerr
01-17-03, 01:05 PM
One (big) advantage: Interlaced video overlay support.

Maybe one "sub-advantage"... The Mits still has color, tint, and the YPrPb service menu functions working even when feeding it a RGBHV input, which suggests that it transcodes the RGB into YPrPb to process before turning it back into RGB to drive the CRT's. Feeding it "native" YPrPb might actually result in an improved image. I guess it would depend on who has better RGB to YPrPb conversion, ATI or Mitsubishi?

If I can trick my Radeon in XP into thinking it has the component dongle, I should be able to continue using the RGB lines of my RGBHV cable as YPrPb, and FINALLY get a chance to see my HTPC at 960i or 1080i.

I still firmly believe ATI should FIX INTERLACED OVERLAY without a dongle, I'm also very happy with the RGBHV connection after reducing red push via the service menu.

0db
01-17-03, 01:17 PM
I'm with Helzerr - at a deep fundamental subconscious level, I NEED 1080i overlay!

I am for the moment stuck in XP and would really like to see this trick work for us!

Has anyone tried putting a scope on the pins of an actual ATI dongle to see what it's doing so the card detects it? pulling a pin low or high, or shorting two pins together? or is it more complicated than that?

My Mits has only 1 DTV input and I have 3 HD component sources....Hughes HD Directv STB, HTPC and MyHD output. My Yamaha has 3 HD component inputs, so its a matter of source switching convenience, that's all.

I'm sure the dongles have one of these VESA eproms that the PC polls for the display info via a serial protocol.

ATI says they're out of stock of the DVI dongles, so I may have to investigate building one. I wasn't able to find much Free info on the VESA standards, and ATI may have ignored the standard for the dongles.

One (big) advantage: Interlaced video overlay support. That's not an advantage of a transcoder. Note I wasn't talking about the dongle. And frankly the dongle is of no use to me if I can't output DVD's at 1080i.

DDC serial eeprom (http://www.microchip.com/download/lit/pline/memory/ic/21095h.pdf). Digikey has them for $0.59.

and we just need someone to dump the contents of the dongle's eprom using something like this:

If that's the answer, it looks a lot easier than trying to trick the computer into seeing a dongle in software; this way you can remove the "dongle" and have it go back to normal without playing in the registry.

you can output movies at 1080i with the dongle If it requires ripping the disc to the hard drive first, I'm not interested. Too much trouble, and totally destroys usebility. When I want to watch a DVD, I want to be able to put the disc in and press Play in TheaterTek. If it doesn't require ripping first, please PM me with more info. :)

Although hopefully we'll be able to get interlaced RGB with the popular players using VMR 9 in the not too distant future...

Ok, I got my DVI-A to component video cable today. The only way I can get proper component video out is to hot swap the ATI HDTV component adapter out. Booting up with the DVI-A cable won't work. Tried adding the rule HDTVRULE_HDTVCONNECTED = 1 to 70 or so locations in the registry. That did'nt work for me either.

Slightly better picture quality with much less bulky cables. Hope somebody finds a solution for this case.

MadCat-

A software way to do it would be to write some code that Intercepts the EDID API in WinXP and return the appropriate data to the ATI drivers. I don't know if this is possible, but it might be.

This looks promising: Reading EDID (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmeother/hh/wmeother/display_1fe8.asp)

So what IS the difference between a transcoder and this (or any like it) dongle?

Couldn't I just use this dongle with my Nvidia card, and use some custom timings from powerstrip?

Transcoders seem really expensive.

01-18-03, 02:15 AM
The difference is, ATI Radeon cards are apparently capable of internally rendering a screen directly to YPrPb output, or at least have transcoder circuitry built into them which is ideally matched to the VGA output it generates. This means all you need is a dongle that "tells" the card to output in YPrPb instead of RGB, and the same dongle replaces a VGA connector with a component connector. This -should- create a slightly better picture than outputting VGA into a cable, into a transcoder box that has a bunch of circuitry external to the video card, and then out to the TV. It's also a LOT cheaper since you already have the circuitry to do it on your card.

Personally I think interlaced looks like absolute crap, and you're better off just running in 540p or 480p. It's not like you can get something from nothing anyway, and all DVDs run at only 720*480p.

Ok, couple things:

1) The dongle is quite different from a transcoder. A transcoder does exactly that - translates a code into a different code. In this instance, the VGA->YPbPr transcoder takes the VGA signal and interprets it into a signal that the TV can read. This what makes them so expensive --- they CHANGE the signal. The ATI dongle or those $20 VGA->RCA cables have no transcoding circuitry; the signal they output is the exact same one being input.

2) The dongles are specifically built to interface with ATI hardware, and none other (why you'd want to anyway is beyond me).

3) There are no dongles "like" it, because this is a genius idea (from a business perspective) from ATI alone. They can sell these $30 adapters that do absolutely nothing but tell your drivers to do something they can already do, then add $15 minimum shipping, and make a ton of money doing it. They probably cost in the range of about $0.50 each to produce. The cable adapters you see that might resemble these are just adapters, and always remember, if you see a price tag that's too good to be true, it probably is.

hope this helps. -deth

DVD can not be viewed at any other resolution than standard res like 480p or 480p in 540p timing, or 1776x1000i and 1080i thanks to ATI having virtual desktop enabled :( I widh I could find a way to disable virtual desktop.

What'll happen is you will get the top 1/4 of the video and it'll be zoomed in sort of to fill the overlay screen

you don't need linux. Look at the bottom of the webpage, there's a dos binary -- which i just tried -- that works.

Ok, i think i've got another idea. I really, REALLY like the idea of programming our own EDID eprom. If it's something as simple as sending an EDID signal back through a couple pins on the VGA port, i'm more than willing to build it. Being that i already trashed my dongle dissecting it (it didnt quite fit together afterwards, hmmm) someone else would have to dump the EDID for us. Which is actually quite easy. If anyone here owns a dongle and is interested (all it involves is running one program to grab the EDID and another to parse it, then forwarding me the results), please email me: dethnite@subdimension.com

too bad no one can figure out how to add certain interlaced resolutions without powerstrip disableing tile based rendering.... I can do it but once I do most of my custom interlaced resolutions do not work (any that have virtual desktop kick in)

1776x1000i and 1920x1080i are able to be displayed but 1280x960i and other resolutions in other timings (1280x1024 in 1080i, 1024x768 in 1080i etc) when tile based rendering is enabled

so I either have comaptibility with more resolutions and have tile based rendering disbaled or less resolutions availible and tile based rendering is on.......

For now most games are playable at 1280x960i but not quite as high FPS :( I cant run AA or aniso at all because of the stupid tile based rendering thing

I can run games at 720x480 and 640x480 in a 540p timing with 4xaa and 16x aniso but doesnt look any where near as crisp as 1280x960i does :(

Most games will not take 1776x1000i as a resolution to play in :(

FWIW, I don't think I really saw a difference in picture quality (@1152x648) using the more direct connection approach bypassing right angle connectors and the dongle. I think my set would benefit more from finer RGB convergence.

Wat the hell? I'm definately confused. That should be driver-specific... and i seriously doubt the default XP radeon drivers or the VGA drivers (whichever you used) could have possibly contained that feature. I wonder exactly how much YPrPb out is actually controlled by software, and not the card. It is significant, but in a way that is a pain in the ass to test. Maybe tomorrow (my day off) i'll feel like screwing around with drivers for half a day. :(

Sounds like the card recognizes the dongle and internally switches to YPrPb output, then once it's in windows the drivers and registry entries allow it to enable the appropriate resolutions, control panels, and display modes. Just a guess?

MadCat

Sometime during the Windows XP install process, it will tests a new resolution and ask if you want to keep the new setting (Don't remember if it warns you first). This is when the SVideo output will go dark. Take a look on the YPrPb input and answer yes to keep the settings.

I know it doesn't make any sense, but I'd swear I wiped the partition clean before reinstalling. Eagerly anticipating your results.

I wonder exactly how much YPrPb out is actually controlled by software, and not the card. It is significant."

The driver and card-specific nature of the dongle is what I was getting at in my post on Page 3.

Just to make it clear: with the DVI-Component dongle attached to a 9700 Pro card, a connected display device will display the POST information and the subsequent "starting Windows XP" screen prior to the full and final launch of Windows (and the Radeon software).

This is true regardless of whether the dongle has been previously connected and/or there has been a full boot of Windows XP.

It seems to indicate that component-output is available through the DVI connector, at least at the VGA level, and that it is either allowed to continue or forced to terminate depending upon whether a dongle is detected (attached to the DVI connector) or not detected (not attached). This is for the 9700 card. I strongly suspect that it would be true for the VGA-component dongle with the 8500 card.

I have now determined that the 8500 VGA-Component dongle will not work on the 9700 card. This is true whether or not the 9700 DVI-Component dongle is also attached. Thus, component output through the VGA connector on the 9700 card is not possible. Whether or not a rewrite of the drivers would allow for this is impossible for me to know or determine.

Finally, attachment of the 8500 VGA-Component dongle to the VGA connector of the 9700 card has no affect on the component or VGA output from the DVI connector on the 9700 card. This is true regardless of whether or not the DVI connector is used with the DVI-VGA adapter or used with the DVI-component dongle.

So - one observation and one conclusion:
Observation - the 9700 is configured differently than the 8500. There is no way at this time to determine whether or not this is through physical board design, the respective bios, the driver(s), or some combination.
Conclusion - a dongle is (unfortunately) necessary at this point, without at least some rewrite of the bios and maybe a physical circuit design. The dongle to be used has to be the one designed for that card.

(I am going to return my 8500 VGA-Component dongle, after its fifteen minutes of use. Until Friday anyone who wants it for $30.00 including Priority Mail shipping can have it.)

"Someone was able to use the 8500 vga->component dongle on their 9700 by also using the dvi->vga adapter."

The dongle-on-adapter assembly does work. I have just finished verifying it once again. The statement that, "the 8500 VGA-Component dongle will not work on the 9700 card" was applicable to the intended use of the dongle directly on the VGA connector. While addressed in my earlier post, it obviously bears repeating.

This reinforces that the critical path is getting the circuitry "load" of the dongle onto the proper VGA analog output of the card. As indicated in my post above the bottom line is that the DVI-based VGA output of the 9700 card needs to see an "enable component" switch, which is provided by a dongle. Again - it's the dongle circuit that is the key.

It also reinforces a belief that the 8500 non-AIW and 9700 cards are configured differently.

(I cannot say whether or not the dongle-on-adapter assembly provides the exact same video performance as the dongle by itself. There may be a very, very slight loss of resolution with the former; if so the loss is on the edge of detectability on my well-calibrated and tuned Toshiba 65" RPTV.)

On the whole "fool the card into seeing somthing that isn't there" line of thinking...I tried my radeon DVI out to the DVI in on my new Toshiba 34HDX82 TV. Post was visible, the initial black background windows XP logo was there, but once the drivers kicked in I lost my display. When I looked in the control panel, the DVI flat panel display option was greyed out, I couldn't force it to turn on.
I'm guessing that it isn't receiving the right info to see a "monitor" there so it is disabling the dvi output. Is there a way to force it to activate the output via DVI?? Who needs dongles if that works!

Thanks,
Tim

Can anyone confirm whether or not if you apply the Win98 reg hack, you can get the component out to appear on the DVI connector of a plain R8500 (not the DV version), i.e., do the component signals appear on the RGB pins of *both* the VGA and DVI connectors in this case?

The reason I ask is that AVMall has a 5m DVI-to-component breakout cable that is half the price of the VGA-to-component one. (I believe I can't post links to this here.) This would solve my cabling problem nicely, though the PQ with this product may not be quite as good as high-end component cables!

Kaborka -

While I have no direct experience with the 8500 series cards. my experience with the 9700 and 9500 validates the ATI website which states that, "Component Output using the HDTV Video Component Video Adapter is a single display feature and will not work simultaneously with TV Output or with a standard monitor." See earlier posts.

As also written earlier there is some sort of "rearranging" of the circuitry to enable component output that involves all three facilities - the VGA output, DVI-derived VGA output, and S-Video output circuitry. At this point there is no way to determine whether or not this can be altered through the drivers or bios. Based upon my experiences and those in this thread a simple rewrite of the registry would not enable component output from both VGA and DVI connectors on the same card.

kaborka
01-20-03, 05:07 PM
Hunter: It's understood that component-out is "all or nothing", with no dual display options. Some people have written, however, that they've been able to get the component signals from the DVI connector. I just wanted to find out if this was possible on a plain R8500.

Hunter
01-20-03, 06:59 PM
Then I (at least) didn't understand, "do the component signals appear on the RGB pins of *both* the VGA and DVI connectors in this case?"

Did you mean "*either* the VGA *or* DVI connectors?"

If so - the answer is "no" on the 9700 (see prior posts for the background leading up to the conclusion that "installation of the 9700/9500 dongle, whether connected to a monitor or not, does not enable the VGA connection for component out").

I would expect that the same is true for the 8500, as all of my experience with both dongles, various configurations, conversations with ATI, and other posts in this thread indicate that the 9700/8500 operate in a "mirror" fashion with regard to component output. The 9700 and its dongle work through the DVI output and the 8500 and its dongle work through the VGA output. And both the second monitor and S-Video capabilities of both cards are precluded once their respective dongles are attached.

OR

Did you mean "from the DVI connector through the use of the 9700 dongle attached to the DVI connector?"

As I have no direct 8500 experience, but I would doubt it, as the 8500 card looks to the VGA connector for a dongle, in a manner similar to how the 9700 looks to the DVI connector for a dongle.

OR

Did you mean "from the DVI connector through the use of the 9700 dongle attached to the 8500 DVI connector by adding a registry entry in Win 98?"

Again - I don't know for sure with the 8500, but it is clear that the 9700 VGA and DVI circuitry are affected by the dongle and/or registry entry and with the result that VGA output is unavailable. So I think it is safe to assume that the similar 8500 VGA and DVI circuitry would be affected in the same manner to render DVI output - component or VGA - unavailable.

OR

When you write, "Some people have written, however, that they've been able to get the component signals from the DVI connector," do you mean obtaining component signals from the DVI connector on a 9700, 9500, or 8500AIW?

If so - "yes, with a DVI-component dongle." But it's not the same on the non-AIW 8500.

Hope this helps. Otherwise I do not understand what you need to have answered.

Sorry if my earlier question was not clear. I'll rephrase. Here's the circumstances:

- Radeon 8500, "plain" version, not the DV.
- no ATI dongle
- using Win98 registry hack to force Catalyst to send component out to the VGA connector
- under these circumstances, do the component signals ALSO appear on the RGB lines of the DVI connector?

Can anyone confirm yes/no for the last question? If you've already built/bought a VGA to RCA breakout described in the first post of the thread, a way to test would be to use the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the card, then plug your breakout into that.

that's the way to do it until we've worked out all the red tape in XP. So far it's evident that simple registry settings will most likely not work in XP, and instead faking the edid sent to the card seems the eventual route. Whether done through software or hardware, we're still a ways off from a working setup. But, i'm sure that we can expect plans for a "custom" dongle, since i'd much rather use a DIY than ATI's anyway, so i know the quality of the parts being put in it.

First tho, i don't understand how the dongle is communicating with the card, what info is passed back and forth, etc... so i really need someone to use get-edid-dos on their dongle setup, so i know the edid of the dongle. As soon as someone takes that step, we're on our way.

Since the dongle is not detected by XP and the registry changes only affect 98 after it actually LOADS the registry, this should be the absolute simplest possible way to make the change! I imagine on my 9700 I can simply leave the monitor connected to the VGA port and the "dongle" attached to the DVI port.

I must be honest here; I have no real comprehension of the inner workings of these electronics, but it occured to me that the card may not be able to access and read an EPROM in the dongle immediately on post (which is what appears to be happening, long before software drivers come into play). If that's the case, is it possible that the dongle simply pulls a particular pin high or low, or shorts two pins together which are unused by regular VGA (or DVI) operation?

no the HDTV Signal on the 8500 is not sent through the DVI Port. I tried my VGA connector through the dvi to VGA adapter both when the machine was booting and also when I had booted with in on the VGA in to WinXP then attatched it to the DVI Port. It seems like the DVI is turned off once the VGA-HDTV adapter is in place

"Under these circumstances, do the component signals ALSO appear on the RGB lines of the DVI connector?"

Just to put this limping animal out of its misery ( :) ) - the answer is, "no."

A friend with a 8500 tried the Win98 registry entry at my request. He did not attach any dongle. He did not get any output through the DVI connector once Win98 started.

This pretty much confirms the belief that configuring these card to output a component signal disables any and all two-output capabilities, whether or not the configuring is achieved through a dongle or through a registry entry.
The result also reinforces the belief that the ATI software is critical - the drivers and/or the bios.

This tracks the results compiled through a similar setup with WinXP:
"The HDTV Signal on the 8500 is not sent through the DVI Port. I tried my VGA connector through the dvi to VGA adapter both when the machine was booting and also when I had booted with in on the VGA in to WinXP then attatched it to the DVI Port. nintari, hunter: Thanks for your tests. I understand there is no way to get YPrPb on the DVI connector of a plain R8500. I will plan to use the VGA connector and a DIY breakout adapter.

It still seems strange to me there's this fundamental difference between the plain and DV versions of the R8500, but c'est la guerre. My only motivation for this was the availability of a cheap 5m DVI-component breakout cable that would solve my cabling problem.

Anyway - it does seem strange and that's why I have spent way too much time and money that ended up in a big circle: it can't be done (without ATI software changes, at the very least).

Wow im just lovin all this troubleshooting... Ive been hangin on a thread to see what might come of all of this. My AIW 7500 has a great home, but might have to be upgraded considering this reg. hack wont work w/ XP. I talked with ATI on Monday morning, and the HDTV dongle is not compatible with the 7500 (so they say) and arent planning to build one at this point. Furthermore, they wouldn't put someone a little more "tech savy" on the phone with me to discuss specifics of non supported ways to extract the YPrPb signal from the card, or to explain why the french, russian, and chinese mirrors of their website outright state that the AIW 7500 provides a signal:

" The DVI-I connector can be used to drive a DVI display, VGA monitor or YPrPb display ..."

in queston #7 of their FAQ... while the google search criteria "YPrPb 7500 -9700" will show this, ATI doesnt seem to remember reporting that the AIW 7500 is HDTV compatible. ARRRGGG!!! Either way, I'm beginning to wonder if I even re-install Win98se on a seperate partition and use a custom dongle that is readily available to me will the card just give me the shaft like its builders? Is there even any point of trying to do so, considering no one is really concerned with the 7xxx series on here anyway? Regardless, I think all of you are pure geniuses, and deserve a nice pat on the back with a sturdy handshake for all of the investigating going on. This is all very exciting to me, and I WANT COMPONENT OUT OF MY HTPC w/o a transcoder. Any ideas or suggestions would come highly welcomed. Cheers

Just when we all thought we were home free ... :)
I'm afraid I'm gonna test some patience, here. (Breath held.)

"i found voltage from pins on both ports identifying the signal as YPbPr"
Okay. But what pins? On the respective pins shown on the ATI Pinout page? All the pins that are needed for a complete signal recognizable by the monitor/HDTV? And are you sure that the voltages/polarities were proper for component and/or RGBHV?
And when was the voltage detected - at POST or after Windows finished booting?

"according to tests by nintari and hunter's friend"
But my test, at least, did not establish the presence, level, and nature of any voltage. Only that there wasn't a signal sufficient to produce a component and/or a VGA based image.

I'm not trying to be picky or nasty - it's just that there are so many factors at work. It's easy for all of us to go places we really haven't been.

Hey - anyone having fun, yet?

Hunter: Your rigor is welcome, by me at least -- that's what it'll take to sort this out! I would be surprised if dethnite's report would apply to the non-DV 8500. Else why would they manufacture a separate VGA dongle just for that card? -- I would think the economies of scale would outweigh any advantage of ATI forcing people to buy a card-specific dongle!

If there's a way to hack it so that YPrPb could be made available on the RGB pins of the DVI connector on a plain 8500 (BBA), it would indeed be cool. It might open the possibility of having a dual-boot setup (as 0db describes) that would not require swapping cables between the monitor and the TV. (Though we'd probably have to turn off the monitor to keep it from receiving the YPrPb on the VGA connector.)

Not sure what you mean by changing unused pins but the dongle uses the same internal wiring as a standard breakout cable. You can prove this by booting up with the dongle connected. After you see the windows desktop, replace the dongle with a standard VGA->YPrPb breakout cable and the dispaly will function as if the dongle was still connected. the switches on the dongle most likely function to convey or define at bootup to the video card (or software driver) the timings (480p, 720p, 1080i) capability of the display in use. The actual resolutions and timings supported are determined by the software driver. Currently, you can adjust the timings with Powerstrip however the driver will not accept custom resolutions as doing so will result in a virtual desktop.

Not entirely true. With my 8500DV with component adapter and catalyst 2.5, I have used the following custom resolutions in 540p: 856x480, and 720x480. These resolutions don't give me virtual desktops. However, I can't program 848x480 in 540p without getting a virtual desktop (No great loss).

720x480 is a driver supported resolution, there is nothing custom about it.

One last time:

1. You can adjust timings with Powerstrip.

2. You can not setup a custom resolution or any use any other resolution other than those currently supported by the driver or you get a virtual desktop.

The Catalyst driver needs to be updated to give YPrPb output mode the same flexibility to setup custom resolutios as is done with VGA/DVI output.

OK, finally I got 98se running and tried this.

I cut off a VGA monitor cable and connected the appropriate pinouts to the component video leads from an extra Playstation2 component adapter. I figured using shielded cables all the way would help.

Running an ATI 9500 non-pro; Catalyst 3.0

First: I made the registry entry, rebooted with S-video as noted. S-video stayed active all the way to the desktop.

I went to the advanced-displays tab and saw that YPrPb was actually Checkable which it was not previously. I checked it, hit apply, and the S-video went dead. I plugged the *******ized breakout cable into both the VGA and the DVI->VGA secondary ports and all I was getting was a distorted, wildly out-of-sync pink mess on the monitor. The driver defaulted the YPrPb display to 720x480. Tried rebooting, and it went back to S-Video output.

I think this MIGHT have something to do with Cat 3.0 and it MIGHT have something to do with my cable. The connections seemed sound though, so I'm not sure what's going on. In truth I've never even used the HD inputs on my monitor... it has a 480p / 1080i input set and another that is for 480i / 480p which I use for my Playstation 2. I think I might try plugging into the lower-res input set just to rule out any problems with the input section.

Any thoughts from others who are still messing with this?

i'd hate to see this thread die.

As for your "pink mess" it sounds like a cable problem... also, were you using the right timings for the output? Could even be a combination of bad timings/cabling ... if your HD monitor doesn't support whatever output the driver defaulted to, that might be the case. Make some new resolutions and try different timings, bind them to some hotkeys, and scroll through them to see if any of your artifacts disappear.

The Viewsonic utility just reads the EDID values in the registry. This utility reads EDID directly from the monitor (both heads), using the graphics card's I2C bus: http://www.entechtaiwan.com/files/moninfo.exe

I finally got around this, the only apparent change was that I couldn't have anything at all plugged into the video card until it was completely booted to desktop. Then I can get it to sync to 640x480 and 720x480, but I can't get it to TOUCH 1080i or 540p based resolutions - everything I do goes direct to virtual desktop, so I guess it's time for me to start reading some more! Thanks again for getting this started... I'm guessing with the amount most people on this forum are spending on their HTPCs it must just look silly to be trying to save $45 this way but for me it's not just a fun way to save a buck, it's a good way to learn a lot more about what's going on inside our video cards.

Hi everybody,

Just reviewed the FAQs and this thread and have some questions.

Most likely, I just don't understand something I've read, so please bear with me if I sound dumb. (seems like quite a lot of the Radeon FAQs are pretty old so I'm not sure what is still applicable)

I have a Panasonic 27" TV which supports coax antenna, regular RCA right/left/video, Svideo and YPrPb input for 480p/480i. It isn't a HDTV but is SDTV digital compatible according to the owner's manual.

I have WinXP Pro SP1 and an ATI AIW Radeon 8500DV.

Using the big ATI input/output dongle, I can connect either SVideo or RCA jacks and get a reasonable picture.

But here is where I get confused:

I do not have a monitor connected to the card's DVI/VGA jack (the DVI/VGA dongle is attached), but the TV shows up as Monitor #1 anyway, listed as Default Monitor. I thought that the DVI/VGA was the primary monitor?

Television (Monitor #1) is set up as 800x600 True Color and the non-existant Monitor #2 is set at 640x480 true color.

Svideo appearance is slightly better than RCA jack video.

I am assuming that YPrPb connection is preferable?

What should I do to get the very best picture on this TV from the 8500DV?

What connection should I use?
Where does YPrPb come out of the 8500DV, big dongle or DVI/VGA?
What hardware/cables do I need to output YPrPb?(will this thread's design work?)
What display settings should I use?
Catalyst 3.0 or 3.1?
Refresh rates?
Powerstrip settings?

I appreciate any help or similar experiences!

I tried the ATI Dongle with my AIW 7500, I don't get YPrPb in the control panel even with the HDTV registry entries added to the display driver under Win XP. With the Dongle connected with conponent cables, the control panel says the monitor doesn't support DDC. So either the 7500 doesn't support YPrPb or there's something missing in the driver support.

A problem from a friend:
"My video card is a Sapphire "Powered by" Radeon 8500LE.
My television is a 27" JVC-AV27230.
MY OS is WinXP Pro

When I hook up the HDTV component video adapter to this card and connect it to the JVC, everything goes haywire. First off, I have been unable to get any color to be output from the adapter to the JVC. However, I hook up the JVC to my DVD player at home with the same component cables and get a color signal. So, I decided to connect the HDTV component adapter to a Dell projector with a "DVI-I to component" cable, and voila ... I get color. When I asked Sapphire about this phenomenon, they say I must be using PAL for the TV output. The Catalyst software doesn't support the PAL/NTSC distinction for YPrPb output, so I decided to ask ATI about this. It has been over two weeks with no response."

Does anyone know what the problem might be? I was considering this same setup, but am worried that I would have the same problems. What is the cheapest ATI card that you can use? I'm relying on your expertise here, because I am out of the look on ATI cards. (some 8500's are more expensive that 9000's, I need a database just to keep track of all the versions of these ATI cards).

=======================================

StickyC, I have managed to get the hack to work in Win98 using a 9600 Pro Lite.

However, the trick to get it to work in Win 98 is to:

1) Add those registry lines
2) Shut down you PC and unplug both the monitor and s-video cables
3) Reboot and wait for the PC to boot into the desktop (those windows sound will be a good way to tell)
4) Plug in your DVI--> YPrPb output between your PC and HDTV
5) When you see your desktop on screen adjust your timing and resolution with Powerstrip and not the ATI driver.

Note:
Similar to the 9500/9700 series Radeon cards, 9600 will disable both vga and s-video when it was forced to YPrPb output with registry hack.
So you must connect your DVI -->YPrPb cable through the DVI out or with a DVI-->vga adaptor if you are using a vga --> YPrPb cable. The virtual desktop is annoying if you want to do resolution higher than 540p: 856x480.

If anyone can come up with a solution to the virtual desktop problem would be a great help!

ATI dongle
I think the 9500/9700 dongle for DVI will work for 9600 series cards, because the HDTV registry enteries are already in Win98 when I installed the catalyst 3.2 driver. Since I don't have a dongle to test with, I can only assume the dongle also works with 9600 series cards.

Thought I'd share some of the experiences I've had so far getting YPbPr output from a regular 8500 (no AIW, no DV, just a straight 8500 with both DVI and VGA spigots).

I'm doing this with the intention of buidling a computer to let the 8500 feed a professional VTR at work. Since I don't have a $30,000 beta machine to test with at home I'm using my Sony KP53HS10 to check the component feed.

First of all I tried the non-dongle approach in Win98 with the registry hacks mentioned in this thread. I got it to work exactly once and then never again. Since I'm working with a test bed computer for this I installed Win98 clean though my long term goal was to get component out in WinXP.

After spending several hours battling the Win98/no-dongle setup I finally just gave up and ordered the HDTV dongle with expedited shipping ($49). Though not cheap I figured I was wasting enough time fighting things that it would be worth it.

Problem is I got caught up in all the dongle confusion between the straight 8500/AIW/DV. ATI doesn't exactly make it clear everywhere on their website as to which dongle their talking about and despite my best efforts I either ordered the wrong dongle or they shipped the wrong one. I'll go out on a limb here and admit that the error was probably mine.

The dongle arrived yesterday (the DVI one when what I needed was the VGA one) and I was bummed when everything I read that came with it said it wasn't for my card. Sure enough when I plugged in into the DVI spigot and hooked up the cables to the dongle and my HS10 I got either garbage or nothing.

Then I had an interesting idea. Leave the dongle connected to the DVI connector and hook up the VGA breakout cable I'd been using earlier in my Win98 test bed to the VGA spigot on the 8500. Sure enough, got component out of the VGA spigot that responded to the switch settings on the dongle just as if it were really passing through it.

I've got a little more research to do today, but the only glitch I've run into so far is not getting overlay on the component output. I'd read somewhere in another thread about this possibly being a driver-related issue and also about temporarily changing resolutions to 640x480 so nudge it into making the overlay work. I had been running 720x480 @59 interlaced - the professional D1 standard.

Anyway, the yahoo moment of yesterday was when I got component out from the VGA spigot despite having gotten the "wrong" dongle. I was planning on returning the wrong one (and eating the $20 shipping - twice) and getting the "right" one, but since running the card in component kills dual output anyway it's really not a problem to have both spigots on the 8500 tied up (DVI with the dongle and the VGA with the leads to the HS10).

I'm still learning a lot on this adventure, but I thought it might be helpful to know that you may not be completely screwed even if you got the wrong dongle. However, if I can't get the overlay to work right I may end up eating these words.

If anyone has a memory jog about the overlay problem I'd appreciate it. Meanwhile I'll keep going through the posts looking for it.

Great info!

Since ATI refuses to sell me this dongle (I live in Europe) I'd like
to remotely reverse engineer it ;-)
I suspect it uses standard monitor DDC information to enable
component output. So I'd like to ask you or any other dongle
owner a favor.
Download RivaTuner: http://download.guru3d.com/rivatuner/
Run it (with PC monitor and tv-out disconnected, only dongle
and component cable). In "Main" tab, next to the "Customize..."
label there is a small button with triangle, press it and select last
of the icons ("Graphics subsystem diagnostic report"). You will
be presented with a report. I'm strongly interested in "Monitor EDID"
and "Monitor EDID details" in "Report preview" window. If you could
send those data to me with information which mode is set on the
dongle. Even more, could you create report for other dongle settings
(720p, 1080i etc...).
If those EDID data are absent, check them in "Available categories",
and re-read by pressing button with camera icon ("Capture current
report").

I will be very grateful and of course make my findings available to all.

MariuszP,

As fare as I can ascertain the ATI dongle will only allow 480p, 720p, 1080i at 59.x Hz. There is no option for PAL 576i 50Hz output. So unless you have a HD TV or projector that can handle those timings, you will not get it to work. Even if your display will work at those timings, watching PAL DVD’s at 59.x Hz could cause problems with stutter.

If you can get something working at 576i 50Hz I would be very interested in it my self.

The only available working PAL option that I know of is a VGA to Component transcoder.

Owen

Mariusz,

Owen may be right, but sometime in the next few days I'll download that utility and post the results in this thread. I got busy with other things and hadn't gotten around to it yet and this weekend is going to be busy, too. I WILL do it, though.

I also had a theory about my overlay problem. I'm not sure how the overlay mechanism handles non-square (D1) pixels. I seem to remember I had problems in the past using non 4x3 ratios. The location of my test bed is currently the computer on a card table in the living room and pulling out the Sony HS10, disconnecting the DVD leads, and hooking up the computer. The spousal unit is already getting tired of the clutter and doesn't allow me to leave the TV pulled out for long periods (days). Guess she's got a point...

Anyway, I'm working a lot this weekend but I should get some time to do some more experimenting though it might not be until Monday. I can tell you that I did get a whole bunch of resolutions in the list but those may just be virtual desktops within the limits of the DIP sliders on the dongle. I'll have to play with it and see.

Hey guys,

I've been talking with the author of the Omega drivers about this, and he's going to send me an .inf file to test - Hopefully it will finally allow this to work under WinXP.
I'll be sure to e-mail it to whomever wants to try it out, as I may not be able to get it to work (I can if I can use my existing RGBHV cable to transmit the component signal - anyone know if this is possible?).
Here's what he had to say:

Ok, I checked the thread and looking at the keys, at least 2 or them are already in my drivers, the only one missing is HDTVRULE_HDTVCONNECTED, which I think is the one that FORCES the YPrPb output.
I can build an updated INF file that you can use with my latest drivers to test IF it works, as I can't test it here.

Keep your fingers crossed!

BTW, in my latest set I enabled all the ATI internal HDTV resolutions, let me know if it works and if you can select them, if you don't have the resolutions available let me know the ones you need (along with the refresh rates) so I can force them.

Please let me know if this works or not - I don't have the proper cable yet.
Hope it works!

galileo -
Where do you select Y Pr Pb?
I'm going to give this a shot - but since I dont have a dongle, Im unfamiliar with how (or where) to select component out mode...
One thing you may want to try, if you havent already - Have you reinstalled the drivers with that .inf in the install directory?

Thanks!

Ryan,

I would expect YPbPr to show up in the Display Settings / Advanced / Displays dialog.

No, I haven't installed it with .inf replaced in the setup, I only get .exe file from the Omega site and there is no way to replace .inf since there aren't any. Does it make sense?

Has anyone else tried this file?
I'm going to attempt this tonight, as I finally have a VGA-component cable.
If some of you have tried this, and not had success, I may just write the author of the Omega drivers and tell him that it doesn't work...

Thanks guys!

cool, tell us how it goes ryan. I don't have my own vga->component adapter yet, otherwise I'd also be testing it...

I'm glad that the possibility of getting this to work in XP is open again. This might save me the trouble of spending $100+ on a transcoder.

RyanDinan
01-05-04, 07:13 PM
Well, I didn't get it to work either...

I uninstalled the ATI control panel, like the drivers said to do...
Then I extracted the files to a folder, replacing the .inf with the new one Omega made for us (you put it into the 2KXP_INF folder).
I then installed the drivers.
Upon rebooting, I went to the 'Display properties_Settings_Advanced_Displays tab, and there was nothing there about Y Pr Pb (this is with a Radeon 9000np) like there is with my 9700Pro on my main machine...
Apparently the drivers are not forcing this option for all cards.
The good news is that the interlaced overlay works correctly through VGA, just like the official 3.10's....
I'll shoot off an e-mail to Omega to see what he can do...

Hang in there guys!

so the omega driver is able to force component output on your 9700pro in WinXP, when you are NOT using the ATI dongle?

If so, that's still great news...

RyanDinan
01-05-04, 11:28 PM
I haven't yet tried the drivers on my 9700Pro system - It's a more "mission critical" system that I'd rather not mess with ;)
I e-mailed Omega about the tests, so hopefully he'll know what to change to get this working across all Radeons...

As far as my thoughts on the Omega drivers -
They seem very nice - very tweaked for 3d apps/games.
They seem to have all the functionality (and then some) of the regular cats...

I'm going to keep the Omegas on my HTPC for now since I haven't run into any issues so far...

Ryan,

I tried this with a 9800Pro and one the "Display" and had the an option to enable "YPrPb" but this did not had any effect on my output.

It seems like YPrPb was enabled as a second Display.

I will get a DVI-HD15 adapter and see if YPrPb is being sent out my DVI port when I enable the YPrPb display.

Ryan,

The ini file that Omega sent you does not even list the HDTV settings for the 9000 series. I know because I have a 9000 pro and so I checked the ini file you posted, the settings are not there. I assume this is because ATI said the adapter would not work with the 9000 series, although others have posted that it does. I even bought the VGA dongle from ATI based on denithe's posting that the dongle would would with a 9000 and XP, sadly it does not.

If you want to try again, you could open the omgega ini file and copy the HDTVRULE settings found under the "ati2mtag_R200_SoftwareDeviceSettings" entry to the "ati2mtag_RV250_SoftwareDeviceSettings" entry and then re-install the drivers. This might enable the component out settings in the control panel.

Let us know if it works for ya.

ive been fighting this for an eternity and i cant get help anywhere, i only need 480i, and i have 2 cables, 1 i made myself, and 1 an infocus vga->component adapter, neither matters.

i cannot get it to give me a picture. the powerstrip built in 480i doesnt work for ****. but i can plug my dvd player into the tv and it works fine. and the registry key doesnt make the slightest dif either.

ok, ive tried everything. both 640x480and 720x480 timings from nintari's guide and lots elsewhere. ive tried the registry switch both ways with everything. ive tried using vnc to change the timings in real time from another comp while i watch the screen on the other.
the best i have ever gotten is a near steady screen only offset 3"up and right, and it has a purple tinge to it. which makes me wonder about the component out actually being enabled, yet like i said the reg key doesnt change anything.

Ok -- this is slightly OT, but still seems related.

I have a 9000 Pro card which has a DVI output. My TV has a DVI input. Can I just directly connect them with a DVI-D cable without having to worry about all of this? I have tried, but the TV never "sees" the DVI input from the 9000. Do I have to do something special? Do I need to do registry or install-file hacks to enable the DVI? Can I have output through the standard VGA port AND output via DVI? Or do I need to disconnect the video and reboot?

I'm using XP -- with the latest Radeon drivers.

Thanks much!

You don't mention which kind of TV. I'm going to guess Toshiba. If you do a search on DVI and Toshiba you will see lots of posts on this topic.

One other thing, I don't believe the 9000 supports the component dongle so you'd need to use the VGA output and a transcoder.

jgoggan
01-23-04, 04:06 PM
I'm sorry -- my bad -- it is a Hitachi 57UWX20B RPTV.

According to at least one person in this thread, the 9000 does support the DIY VGA->Component mentioned in this thread. ATI doesn't sell a dongle for it -- but it works.

But, again, I'm trying to do it without the dongle -- directly through the DVI output on the card. I'm confused about whether the DVI output on the 9000 is useful for anything actually! Does it even support a DVI->CGA adapter for a second monitor? If not, then why is it even there?

Or should I be able to do DVI out on the 9000 directly to the DVI in on the Hitachi?

Thanks!

- John...

jvincent
01-23-04, 04:09 PM
Not sure about the Hitachi's and DVI.

ATI cards/drivers in general shut off the DVI port if they don't detect a proper DDC signal from the DVI port so you may be getting that problem with the Hitachi.

jgoggan
01-23-04, 04:27 PM
Ah -- good to know. Is there a way to force this on with a registry hack, by chance?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is if anyone knows what the 9700 component dongle contains? Does it have an IC in it or is it just resisters and dip switches? I know they are probably sealed but I'm always tearing thing like that open and reassembling them in my own ugly way.:) I'm one of those. You know, the type that tears everything apart to see what's going on in there.:D This information would be great to have since it would allow those of us liek me the ability to create our own versions of this device catering to our own needs. Thanks to anyone who can assist.

jvincent
01-30-04, 05:59 PM
I doubt very much that the dongle has any active components in it. I'm guessing that the RGB signals on the VGA/DVI side are passed directly to the YPbPr pins and the other pins are either floating or grounded based on the DIP switches.

If someone has a dongle, and ohmmeter, and some spare time they should be able to report back.

Hi all,

I'm trying to install Omega drivers with my Radeon 9000 pro and VGA/Ypbpr cable :

- I have the HDTV regkey from .INF Omega File
- My cable is connected to my TV (VGA to YPrPB)

I don't have the "YPrPb" Tab in the "display" applet. But my TV is seen like a "Monitor" with no DCC support!!!

An idea??

Thanks in advance,

I also could not get a 9000 w/ ATI adapter to properly output -- I could get an image (on my Hitachi 57UWX20B), but never a proper/locked one (always scrambled or rolling).

My 9600XT just arrived today -- we'll see how it goes. If it is the same, then I'll work more with the values and see if I can get it to work with both the 9600 and the 9000. If the 9600 "just works", then I'm going to just blame the 9000 as not being able to do what I need and leave it at that. I'll let you know...

Same thing on my ATI 8500 Pro. After setting HDTVRULE_HDTVCONNECTED=1, the ATI advanced display settings disappear.

There is something about this on the original thread with Luzi's instructions (http://www.jd-bbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=245584), something about it being a bug with the Catalyst drivers and the 8500 chip. It does look like a way is suggested to get around this, but with the Chinese to English conversion, I cannot figure out exactly what it is.

Anyone who can read Chinese care to summarize for us?

ez107 uses 8500 Pro and here are his steps:

1. Install Windows XP SP1
2. Windows Update (apply all)
3. Install ATi Catalyst 4.1 (because 4.2 will conflict with my certain program and cause system to reboot)
4. Set the resolution to 640x480, 60Hz
5. Apply ATICVPath (by LUZI)
6. Remove DAL_CVDeviceData from Registry
7. Shutdown
8. Unplug all VGA cable (include S Video cable)
9. Power On
10. Wait for a while (this depending on how long your PC can get into XP)
11. Connect VGA->3RCA cable
12. YES, I GOT IT!!!

I would like to share my experience with a radeon 8500 card, the plain card, not the AIW.

Using the registry hack described by Luzi, I can get it work, sort of. To achieve this, I need to, (1) apply the registry hack (2) disconnect all the displays; (3) boot into window and then connect the HDTV. I cannot, however, get back the ATI advanced display settings. This evening, I also tried the tricks described by ez107, deleted the "DAL_CVDeviceData" from the registry. Contrary to his finding, this has no effect on the 8500 board. (He applied on AIW8500DV card according to his post.) I yet get back the advanced settings and I still need to disconnect all the cables when rebooting.

A few months earlier, someone had mentioned that if a DVI dongle is connected to the DVI port of the 8500 board, he could get YPrPb output from the VGA port, in win98, though. I have yet to make these dots connect.

I think that the breakout cable is for the AIW version of the 9700 and 9800 only. If your 9800SE is not an AIW, you would need the dongle...

Has anyone successfully tried these XP registry hacks with a 9800Pro? I don't see the ...\Video\{A476B725... registry entry with the HDTV* keys on my PC. Does the patch add this, or do I not have that entry because I am only using the DVI connector to an LCD monitor at the moment, and don't have/haven't had a VGA monitor connected?
