shuttermaker 10-14-05, 07:09 PM Can anyone suggest the best antenna for OTA on John's Island?
When I lived on Johns Island, I used the CM 4228. It worked great for everything except FOX...due to their poor sinal strength...
I had mine mounted at a height of less that 25 ft. with (4) 50 foot tall oak trees in the way. I also had a signal amplifier inline as well
Well I had a comcast tech come out today and test my signal and everything is ok . The problem is still occuring so I guess I will try swapping out my box .
The CM 7775 is a UHF 26 db low noise, preamp Best you can get
Best to use a pre-amp, amp at ant. and power supply inside. The CM TITAN line are low noise and work better than the Spartan line. All TITan have a 7XXX part #
atp1313 10-17-05, 12:06 AM I tried a CM 3041 (Spartan 3) today from Lowe's and was very disappointed. It didn't do a darn thing to the signal. In fact, after I hooked it up, my other signals that were fine dropped out. I tried it with the FM trap in and out with no discernable difference either way.
Also, I have been fortunate the last few days with FOX coming in clear for baseball (and some football this afternoon). But now that the game is over and the local news is on, the signal is crap. So I wonder again if they aren't boosting their signal during HD programming/games and turning off that booster afterwards. No major changes in the weather, so I can't think of anything else. Any thoughts on whether this is even possible?
bmduncan 10-17-05, 12:13 AM Hello,
I'm relocating from Raleigh, NC to Charleston (Riverland Terrace sub on James Island) and was looking to get some insight on what to expect from Comcast. I'm coming from TWC with an HD DVR (SA8000) jacked into a Samung HLN DLP. I have the following quesions if anyone can assist from their experience:
Do I need to specify a particular HD DVR from Comcast or do they only issue one box?
Do they charge extra for getting a new drop done to the house from the nearest box? (I'm concerned about the wiring, have no idea if it's been refreshed or if it's all RG-59 in house and buried)
Any other installation gotchas I should be aware of?
I'm planning on ordering their digital cable promo with the HD/DVR combo. Then adding broadband through the comcastoffers.com promo.
If I should be looking at Knology for any reason please let me know!
Thanks,
Brian
"Do I need to specify a particular HD DVR from Comcast or do they only issue one box?"
For HD/DVR we have the SA 8000 and the SA 8300. We currently have both in stock so it is kind of luck of the draw as to which one you would receive at installation. If you get the 8000 but want the 8300, let me know after the install and I can arrange a swap.
"Do they charge extra for getting a new drop done to the house from the nearest box? (I'm concerned about the wiring, have no idea if it's been refreshed or if it's all RG-59 in house and buried)"
The installation special is for a standard installation which may not cover additional wiring done per special request. However, our tech should be able to take signal readings at the ground block and inside the house to make sure everything will work ok.
"Any other installation gotchas I should be aware of?"
If you have any questions about the installation or the offer, I will try and clarify.
"I'm planning on ordering their digital cable promo with the HD/DVR combo. Then adding broadband through the comcastoffers.com promo."
You certainly can do this, however I don't want to add another step to the process for you if we don't have to. Let me know what offer you were looking at and I might be able to match it locally.

Nah
Hmmm...wonder why not? ;) I think Frank is required by contract to say that :p
My two cents - I have had both, and my personal preference was always Knology. This is based primarily on customer support that I received with Knology. It has been about 4 years since I had Knology, and in that time, they may have declined in this area of service, but I cannot say with any certainty.
In terms of channel offerings, I think Comcast is currently leading - in my opinion - by 1 or 2 channels. For broadband, Comcast offers two levels of speed: 4Mbps and 6 Mbps. Not sure if Knology offers "High Speed" and "Really High Speed" or not.
Knology's supply lines are across the board much newer. When they came online in the Charleston area in 1997/1998, they had to build an all new infrastructure. Everything they strung was fiber (or RG-6). I am sure Comcast has done as much upgrading as they can, but I would bet that there is still plenty of older infrastructure out there.
Ultimately, it also boils down to availability. In my neighborhood, I don't have a choice, and that bothers me....choice and competition are always good. If you move into a neighborhood that has an exclusive deal with one company, you may be stuck. Or Knology may not be "live" in some areas either...they are still growing.
Either way, I am sure you will be fine. And welcome to town... :)

Thanks for the lowdown on Knology. Anyone else care to comment on comcast vs. knology as I can get either... Not concerned about the higher broadband tier since I'd much rather have a reasonable upload speed. One of these days...
SCSonyUser 10-17-05, 11:43 AM I am sorry if I am asking a question that was addressed previously.
I live in Summerville. I have Timewarner cable but saw that they offer only a few HD Channels. What channels do you get in the Summerville area by using an antenna. How is the quality and lastly what equipment did you use.
Thanks
Latest out of Wash. now puts it at April 7,2009.

I noticed the same thing...picked up FOX for the first time here in Summerville! One bar, but no dropouts during the baseball game...then later, nothing. I figure if I get an amp and possibly taller pole, I can get it consistently.

I am using a Samsung HD reciever and Radio Shack UHF (only) antenna on top of my second story roof (about 2 feet above the crest). Besides what is already on TWC (ABC, CBS, & PBS -- which come strong OTA), I get NBC if the wind isn't blowing too hard (actually pretty good), and FOX for the first time the other day (but need about another 10-20 feet + amp to get it consistent I think). I have never recieved UPN...but hear they are SD on the digital side anyway. I live just off Trolly with my antenna facing a treeline running along Trolly.

I just went from Comcast to Knology. The Knology guys have known next to nothing about the HD side, but have been pretty responsive. As far as lineup goes, K has 2,4,5,7, 24, NBCU (Universal HD), HDNet & HDNet-Movies, ESPNHD, Discovery HD, HBOHD and StarzHD. Comcast has 4,5,7(-1,2 and 3),24, TNTHD, ESPNHD, Discovery HD, INHD1&2, HBOHD and I think SHOHD. In my mind, that puts K ahead for now. On the other hand, Comcast has a decent VOD lineup (via channel 199) which includes replays of HBO programming and some other free movies; I haven't located VOD on K yet.
Maybe the bigger thing is that I had to go back to the 8000HD - I had an 8300HD from Comcast. I miss the extra hard disc space, and am using a component instead of HDMI connection. On the other hand, Picture Quality is about the same for the digital channels, and the HDMI never passed through Dolby Digital sound. The other problem that I had with Comcast was the G4 channel sound, which works fine on Knology. Knology seems to have fewer options available on the box under the settings menu.
Frankly, the HD transmission for all of the OTA stations is still fairly variable. My Dad asked if it's worth it to get HD - I couldn't tell him yes without qualification (he's going from a 25" set and Comcast digital service). My wife gets frustrated with the occasional audio dropouts and picture freezes. The freezes happen more on NBCHD than any other. Tonight, WCBD also had consistent vertical noise across the screen (lines from top to bottom) which were clearly visible on dark scenes for the first couple hours of prime time.
On James Island, the picture quality for the lowest analog channels (2-6) is lousy. The HD set just emphasizes the problem. Yes, I have the box set to pass-through.
Knology doesn't have a choice of speed for the cable modem, so I can't say about that. I suspect it's the "standard" lower speed version. I had DSL Ultra before, theoretically 3mbps download, and this feels about the same. I usually use a 802.11b connection to my router, so that has some impact as well.
Since I was spending >$100 for Bell complete choice + DSL Ultra, and another >$110 for Comcast (2 digital receivers + 1 8300HD + HBO), I'll be saving a bit (perhaps $50) for a similar package with all of the premiums.

dwine10 10-17-05, 11:03 PM Hi there,
I just got a Dish Network HD 811 receiver. I live in Mt. Pleasant and am not sure what kind of antenna to get. Are the ones that clip onto the dish a waste? I'm not too excited about the thought of getting on my roof or running lots of new cables through my house. Thanks in advance for the help.
-D-
You only need one cable from ant to 811 clip on ant suck. go back and read posts about ants. and stay away from diplexers.

I asked for one when I placed the order, but the installer brought an 8000 and gave me a blank look when I asked. I haven't had a chance to follow-up yet, and have gotten mixed responses about whether I can do a carry-in exchange, wherever the office is located.

shuttermaker 10-18-05, 11:11 AM Not sure about the carry in policy but, their local office is located on Dorchester Rd close to 526, onthe same side of the road as the Uhaul rental center.
bmduncan 10-18-05, 04:19 PM JFS,
Thanks for the comcast vs. knology feedback. NBC is the worst HD channel here in Raleigh too (reliability and PQ) so at least I'll be used to that. Could you please clarify the (-1,2,and 3) comcast statement? I assume you're referring to local affiliates that I'm not yet familiar with so I'm going to look into that...
8300 w/ Knology - when I called yesterday they said they only issue the 8000.

You should call again, whoever you spoke to was incorrect. I have both the 8300 and the 8000.

Brian, welcome, I think what he means by the 1,2,3 statement, is that there is one ABC station 4-1, 2 CBS stations 5-1 (normal) and 5-2 (weather radar station) and three PBS stations 7-1 (digital SD, simulcast of the analog local), 7-2 (an alternative local PBS, mostly of very local interest, i.e. old Spoleto performances, some programming) and 7-3 which is PBS HD.

Anyone with Knology having this problem also?

perigee369 10-19-05, 11:05 PM Someone had mentioned that Knology does not have a higher 'tier' of internet speed, I am here to point out that is not correct. Knology does finally offer a speedier option, which they call "The Edge". It is an additional $15 a month (as opposed to the $10 that Comcast charges for the higher tier) So it apparantly is as follows (based on speed tests I conducted, I had briefly switched to Knology, then back to Comcast):
Basic Internet
Comcast - 4mb down / 384kb up
Knology - 3mb down / 384kb up
Higher speed tier
Comcast - 8mb down / 768kb up ($10/month extra)
Knology - 7mb down / 768k up ($15/month extra)
BTW, for what it's worth, I'm thrilled that NBC-HD is *finally* coming to Comcast, it was one of my minor complaints about the HD service. However, I really enjoyed (er spoiled) with the Universal HD and HDNet channels on Knology, so Frank T., if you're listening, we *really* need to have Comcast get these channels in the HD lineup and I'll be happy as I can be ;)
BTW #2, anyone else noticed WCIV's HD signal is wayyyy down tonight??? I have a roof antenna now for OTA, and I usually get 80-90% from them, but tonight, it was at best 60%, but most of the time at 30%!!! All the other OTA channels were ok...
Later,
Perigee
has anyone noticed that wtat has been showing their 10 o'clock news in hd? they have it posted in titan schedule as being shown in 720p. i can't receive them here in vance,sc. since their news comes from wcsc , i don't see how they can do that. thanks for information!

Now I may only be able to get WTAT occaisionally, when the moon is full and the winds are form the south and the relative humidity is below 50%, but I can say with some confidence that they are NOT broadcasting their news in HD. I think it is more likely that Titan has made a rare typo. ;)
I have everything Comcast offers excluding the phone service. I am now looking for alternatives because of customer service. I have spent hours on the phone over the last year with mulitple problems with billing, no cable service, no internet service, request to bury the new line installed in July and HD DVR box constantly rebooting/crashing. Comcast's offering are excellent but the reliability of their services are terrible. I am making plans to change, I contacted knology last evening because it looks like the Creek is not in their territiory. If there is not a reasonable time frame for Knology I will be looking to go satellite. Sad thing is, I really do not want to change but I cannot take any more Comcast garbage. Landfill is full!
zeggor, please send me your contact information and we can discuss your issues.

I think we all feel your pain. While Comcast has the better (more) HD offerings, their customer support has traditionally been quite suspect. There are one or two people within the Comcast call center who care and can complete a task as they have said they would. My wife and I have never had any consistancy with our billing rate. It has fluctuated as much as $10 from month to month.
It seems that every month that we get a bill, we know that we are going to be making a phone call. Things have been okay the past two month, so maybe this is a sign of things to come. And Frank has been helpful to me, so don't hesitate to get in touch with him.
bmduncan 10-20-05, 04:51 PM Thanks to all who've given me feedback this week. I've decided to go with Comcast and Frank's presence here is a big reason. He has been fantastic to deal with and has answered any and all questions I've had. Kudos to Frank! The sales rep that Frank referred me to for placing my order was also very competent. I'm sure I'll run into a problem down the road but it's nice to know that there are indeed competent people at Comcast and that they are willing to help. Good luck to all in your HD endeavors.

MBentley 10-21-05, 12:25 AM Hello everybody. I don't own an HDTV yet, but I'm ordering mine from Costco online tomorrow morning. Can anyone suggest a good indoor antenna setup for the West Ashley area? I'm right off of Bee's Ferry. I don't really want to attach an outdoor eye sore and have to run the wires into the house. Any info would help. Thanks.

Be sure to order a year of NBC, CBS,ABC and Fox, From Costco or the eye sore will be on your new TV. :D
I have never used Comcast but, I can share my personal experience with Knology.
I have their High-Speed Internet and Telephone Service and at one time subscribed to their Cable TV Services.
I have been very pleased with the quality of the Internet Service and the Telephone.
Their Cable Service was terrible. I had them out to the House numerous times in attempts to resolve quality issues re: reception. I live in Coosaw Creek and the infrastructure here is relatively new so I was surprised at the poor quality that I was seeing.
Knology never did resolve the quality issues so I dropped the TV Service.
Knology's Customer Service/Support is very responsive, but I have had many complaints and problems associated with administering my Internet and Telephone Service Account properly. MANY!
Knology has also had financial problems and I believe filed Chapter 11 at one time.
I have seen other Service Providers Cable Signal (on Large Screen Displays) in the Neighborhood and they, in my opinion, also do not look very good including Digital Hig-Def. The signals looked OK on smaller screens, but looked pretty bad on Larger Screen Displays.
I now have DTV Sat. HigH Def and I am very pleased with the quality and service. I have been a DTV subscriber since 95 and have had very few complaints with the service and handling of my account. There was only one service interruption ( a few hours) and that was a National Wide Problem.
Good Luck!

Off of Bees Ferry? Your actually in a good position to receive all of the DTV stations without having to move your antenna. Just aim towards the east and you should be able to fly WTAT to WCBD to the towers in Awendaw, good line.
A lot will depend on your surrounding conditions, tall trees, decent line of sight, having to aim thru the neighbors house, such. It will be hard for us to give suggestions on a perfect indoor setup, since no indoor setup is perfect, trial and error this way, sorry.
Indoor. Try a Silver Sensor from Sears or BB, about $39, very directional antenna. Aiming is critical, your case, point east. But I wouldn't expect a miracle with this antenna from your distance. If the SS doesn't bring satisfactory results, simply return it, and you'll have to get another game plan, perhaps larger and in the attic. Or............... Comcast.
Good luck.

I don't watch that much NBC but I did notice it (OTA) last night. Maybe they are playing around with the power.
I have noticed problems with the DiscoveryHD picture whenever the content has motion in the scenes. I typically record Extreme Enginering. I have a several months old recording of one episode that I never erased from the hard disk (SA 8300HD cable box). The PQ is simple marvelous. No problems.
However lately (even a few hours back) I have noticed a lot of stutter (?) when the camera is panning the scene. I don't have this problem with other HD channels (with similar contents). As a result it gives the viewer migraine headaches (seriously).
Could it be that Discovery HD has started using much higher compression ?
Does Comcast do anything to the signal ?
Anyone know ?

Ha! I want to use an antenna so that I can get NBC HD and some of the multi-cast stuff. Does anyone know when Comcast will be getting NBC-HD?
Free4me,
I also live off of 41 and had the same issues with NBC and FOX. I purchased a "bowtie" antenna from Radio Shack for $5.99, connected it to a 3ft long coax cable and then just moved the antenna around in the window until Fox signal strength was high, and then stuck it to the window. I now get FOX in perfect as well as NBC, but no UPN (which I don't watch anyway.

We have them in stock now, but there are still 8000's floaing around in the payment centers and on the trucks. If you would, please send me an email with your address and if you want to pick one up at a payment center or if you want a tech to bring one out and I'll make sure that we have one set aside for you.

Not my particular area of expertise so I don't recall all the specifics off the top of my head (plus I'm in those last hours of vacation halo just trying to get caught up with what's been going on in HD land while I was out of town) Anyway, I know there is a scheduled upgrade - and I believe it is to that speed and that it will occur around the first of the year.
We also include significant discounts when you bundle with either video or voice and of course the most discounts if you take all three products.

I now can't get back to the "magic focus," but have it realigned (except the blue is out of focus). Anyway, I suspect a convergence board problem, and expect the picture to get messed up again. I figured I need to have it repaired then, and if so, need to know of a respectable repair company here in Summerville...any help? Anyone know the cost to have thi done...thinking if it gets too expensive it will be time for a new LCD TV instead of this huge projection HDTV.
MBentley 10-27-05, 08:27 AM Frank or other Comcast folks,
Can you PLEASE start a waiting list for 8300 boxes?
I have called customer service every Tuesday and Friday at 2 pm for three weeks now... as instructed by a cs rep. But, to no avail. I understand that you might not have 8300 boxes in stock, but should I really have to call every two days?
Thanks,
Loyal Comcast Customer
Patrick Bryant
Hey Patrick. I picked up my 8300 yesterday at the payment center off of Leeds Ave. They had at least 2 or 3 left after I got mine.
patrickbryant 10-27-05, 02:57 PM Yes, I picked mine up yesterday... Frank and the other CS folks helped me out with the heads up.
The 8300 is great.
THANKS!!

atp1313 10-28-05, 01:43 AM Several people have suggested I get a UHF-only antenna to replace my UHF/VHF CM3018. Can someone clearly explain why the UHF-only would really be any better? I have checked my antenna and the UHF portion doesn't appear to be all that much smaller than the UHF-only antenna offered at RS. Is the difference in the number of elements? Or do the VHF elements "interfere" or weaken the ability to receive UHF signals?
I am planning on doing some "major" work on my antenna setup this weekend by adding a rotator, so now would be a good time to change the antenna if necessary. But by adding the rotator, I am hoping to eliminate some of the problems associated with current setup (ie not getting FOX). I will also be adding 3-5' of height/clearance to my antenna, so maybe this will help get it higher above the roof ridgeline and allow for clearer signals. :)

Thanks for the overload ;) I will look and see if I can learn anything.
Although I am ultimately hoping someone can simply say "UHF-only is better because..." And hopefully this will be said with local interests in mind.
MBentley 10-28-05, 02:44 PM This forum is all about overloading people with information. ;)
Has anyone done business with Summerville Electronics or Palmetto Electronics?
MBentley 10-28-05, 11:10 PM I've got some trouble w/ my new SA8300 box. Whenever I put it on the Video On Demand channel it says it's trying to initialize and locks up. After about 2 or 3 minutes it will reboot. Also, shows recorded on my the dvr are really grainy when I play them back. This is a Comcast box and I'm still using the co-ax out b/c my HD isn't here yet.

A UHF ant has all the elements made for UHF freq. all the local stations are UHF.
Satori84 10-29-05, 05:12 PM A few of you may remember I have been having some issues with the SA8000HD (TWC-Georgetown system). Well last week it finally died; the hard drive apparently crashed after a couple weeks of increasingly flaky operation. I was fortunate enough to replace it with a brand new 8300HD :) from the local office, with the only serious loss being about a dozen show segments I had been hoarding on disc to use as HD demos for guests.
The first symptom was an error message when trying to set up a future recording; it claimed ther was no free space. I knew that it was actually around 43% full, but humored it and tried to erase one show, which failed after which the box locked up. After a reboot, the space was back to around 43%, but all the shows on the list would play poorly, some worse than others (hits, pauses, freezes, etc). Performance on newly recorded shows also began to deteriorate, until finally a week or so later nothing would come up but the error message "Disk Problem: There is an unrecoverable write error" This was on Friday, but fortunately the box still worked with live TV until Monday when I could swap it out.
I mention this in case anyone else happens to see these kinds of errors, which I think are indicators of incipient hard drive failure. Also I can now confirm that the 8000 had gotten very sluggish on commands from the remote; the 8300 is positively zippy in comparison.
Now I have to start rebuilding the demo material...
gbff123 10-30-05, 08:03 AM I have just received my CM4228 that I ordered and I am surprised at how flimsy the mounting is for this antenna. Has anyone had any issues with this? Has anyone reinforced it before mounting? Where I live, it is not uncommon to get 40 MPH gusts in a summer thunderstorm and I have serious questions about whether this antenna will survive that in its current configuration.

When watching live TV, is the picture also grainy?
If the picture on live TV is grainy, it could be a signal issue. If live TV is fine, but the DVR playback is bad, then it sounds like a box problem. Please send me an email and I'll try and trouble shoot and see if we can figure out what we need to do to get it working.

Hatfield 10-31-05, 11:19 PM Anyone in the Old Mt. P area(behind Mama Brown's/Paige's Thieve's Market) having any issues with Comcast ABC HD or CBS HD? I've been experiencing a lot of pixelation and sound drops during evening viewing. Had a tech come out on Sunday(Yuri I think his name was=great guy. Knew his stuff and loved that I knew mine :D ) and he said it most likely was some of my old coax connections and splitters. He changed them out and it did improve the signal on a bunch of channels. I didn't even get channels around 110 before and now I do fine, but I'm still getting trouble with ABC HD and CBS HD and it's only during primetime at night(during the "good" shows  ). All the other HD channels are great. Better in fact. I'm making another appointment, but I just wanted to check if anyone else is experiencing the same problems. TIA
Update 11/2 9:05pm: Upgraded to an 8300HD box today to see if that might make a difference. The 8300 is definitely better all around. Me likey the DVR. :p But I'm still getting problems with ABC HD and CBS HD. "Lost" was the test and it's unwatchable(good thing it was a rerun). I still get pixelation/signal drops but it's not as bad as it was with the 3250HD box. The 8300HD even records the pixelation/signal drops which is good 'cause I can show the tech. Time to make an appointment.

r.jones 11-03-05, 04:06 PM A friend had to get a Sony DVD Changer repaired. He made the mistake of calling Protronics in Mt. Pleasant (881-8309). He turned it in for repair and payed the required $20.00 deposit. Protronics policy is, they will repair the product without contacting the consumer if the repair amount is not over $55.00. The DVD player was turned in at Protronics on September 7th (Protronics also failed to provide my friend with a pick up ticket). After a month, my friend called to get a status report on his changer. He was told it was on the bench. He called on a weekly basis after that to see if the unit was repaired and ready for pick up. The "expert repair man" at Protronics informed him that he had a call in to Sony asking how to fix the unit (the disc carousel would not call up the requested disc). Protronics was unable to do the repair and informed my friend that it could be exchanged for a similar unit (aproximately the price of a new DVD Changer). After holding his unit for two months, they would not do him the courtesy to send it in for exchange.
After his last phone conversation (November 3rd) with Protronics where he summerized their unprofessional handling of the situation, he was told that if he didn't pick up the unit by the close of business that day, it would be in the trash can.
HOW'S THAT FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE?

That is absolutely absurd...but quite believable. They either don't care about customer service or they are so busy and making so much money that they feel they don't need to be bothered by this "simple little problem". Hopefully your friend was able to retrieve the DVD player. And a call to the Better Business Bureau wouldn't be out context either. Here is a site my wife uses to check everything we send out for repair or purchase online...if it's on this list, we just keep looking.

Nuwanda 11-09-05, 06:11 PM Has anyone got a good signal in Devon Forest (North Goose Creek) area and if so, what antenna did you use? I have tried the indoor type from Terk (worthless), now I am using a outdoor type (also from Terk), but I only get channels 4, 5, and 7 from that one, not Fox, UPN, or NBC (need for the wife factor). At least she can watch Lost and Desperate Housewives in HD, but I know I should be able to get better reception.
I am considering the Channel Master 4228, but it is directional, and my signals come from three towers (~115, ~155, and ~168 degrees). Will the side lobes for this antenna work. I am about 15 to 23 miles from all three towers.

I am in Crowfield and I get ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS all without any dropout and very consistent. ABC will occaisionally flake out, especially when it has been foggy the last few nights. FOX is worthless as far as signal power and you can get it, if you are pointed pretty much right at it. I can get it fairly well without being aimed right at it, so long as it is a cool crisp evening, but never in time for football...it usually cools down enough and is clear enough JUST after the second game on Sundays, if there is one.
I am using the ChannelMaster 3018 or 3019 (minimal difference). I am not amped or using a rotator. Others have posted with amp-ed config's and with rotators, and they all seem to have better reception. If I "REALLY" want to watch something on FOX, then I climb up on my roof and re-aim to Arco Ln, and it comes in fine, but I hate climbing on the roof and my wife has not allowed me to get a rotator yet...she has no shows of preference on FOX and feels no desire to waste my time and my money on something she doesn't care about. ;)
One thing that you may want to keep in mind is that Devon Forest also lies in a bit of a gulch. Unless you are at the "top" of Devon Forest, you will need a good bit of elevation on your antenna to get a clear line of sight and a good signal, amp or no amp.
Good luck and keep us posted on your adventures!
Satori84 11-11-05, 04:34 PM I've been occasionally trying to catch Good Morning America from ABC in HD since the Nov 3 start date. The first day or two WCIV passed it through in HD but the last few times I checked it was in standard def. (This is through TWC/Georgetown, but I'm pretty sure this is an issue at channel 4, not TWC. This is probably the first time the crew in WCIV's master control has had to switch over in the AM, so maybe the SOP hasn't been set up yet?) Has anyone else in Charleston noticed this?
I can get WPDE-DT from Florence OTA and they are carrying the HD feed.

Maybe it will be on digital 814 in addition to the analog channel. Not HD but would still be better.

Shouldn't be there at all - we were never going to get the game in HD. It must be some sort of communication error between my PPV Coordinator and the Headend staff.... I heard them talking about an HD Fight that was coming up in the near future so I'm going to assume this is somehow mixed up with that....

I knew better. Of course, after a while it was removed. I enjoyed watching the game however in digital would have been better and HD would have been the only way to watch it. Of course, the game was not the most exciting meeting between the two. At least the tigers pulled it out. Anyway, we can hope for next year.

I believe the answer to this is that D* cannot get a good enough signal into their local uplink station to pass along to us in the Charleston market, so they give us an equivalent station from another market.
To be honest, I was tricked when I got my HD-Tivo from D* and ran the antenna set up. It happened to be a perfectly clear night and I was able to actually get a lock on two stations (CBS & Fox) from out of JACKSONVILLE!! Then when I was watching a recording of Malcolm in the Middle (normally on WB14), and the commercials they ran were for some place in Coconut Grove. I actually thought that I was somehow able to get this signal OTA. What an idiot I am for thinking that :p
Bottom line - you paid (in theory) for all of your local channels, and D* is simply doing all they can to accomodate your contract.

I have a 8300HD from Comcast .. anyone know when we can expect changes ? I am getting rather weary with the shoddy interface on these SA boxes ... the gods must have spoken now that Cisco holds the reins. Hopefully, Cisco will get rid of the SA code and build a new interface from scratch.

currins 11-29-05, 01:01 AM This may be a stupid question, but here goes. I purchased a 50" Panasonic Plasma, Model TH-50PX50U, about 4 weeks ago.
Everything was going fine until a couple of days ago, but now I'm getting a constant crackling or popping in the speakers. I have a Comcast set top box with DVI to HDMI (with separate audio cables) and have also tried component/composite, but the crackling is still there. I also have a Playstation hooked up, but no other home audio equipment.
I'm currently using Comcast, but I have not been thilled. We're in a new sub-division out in Tanner Plantation in Hanahan. I had a temporarily line for a while, but not it seems to be a normal feed from the tap at the street. Picture quality on the non-HD channels is suspect at best.
So in ya'lls opinion, is the speaker crackling indicative of a problem with the TV? Comcast? My connections? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Have Comcast check the signal strength coming into the house. That determines if it is your problem or theirs. If SD is really bad I suspect it is theirs.

Has anyone heard when WTAT is going full power? Since it doesn't appear that TWC is going to carry them anytime soon, I would sure like to watch some football in HD this year, and hoped that FOX would pump up the wattage on their HD signal:D
clancyhd 11-30-05, 04:30 PM Greetings
New to the thread and to forum.
Just moved to Stono Ferry in Hollywood. Have 2 DirectV HD 10-250 DVRs. When the installer hooked us up I had requested off air ant. for local HD, he said the signals could not be received at this location. I find it hard to believe. Appreciate comments, and recommendations, if you think it can be done, on equipment to include ant., amps., splitters/diplexers etc. I'm not to knowledgeable on some of the lingo so simple explanations valued.....it will hurt to go back to viewing football playoffs in analog.
Thanks in advance for advice.

Anyone happen to notice? It wasnt in HD via Knology.
was not on TW in the MB area either but it did run 3 minutes late. O'Reilly said it was a liberal plot to do away with Christmas
clancyhd 12-01-05, 10:26 AM KTrout,
Appreciate the reply. Your site and the CEA site (I had found that) together provide very helpful info.
Thank you
I just noticed a new channel on TWC...don't get too excited, it isn't FOX or NBC...rather looks to be Universal HD (UNIHD on the guide), Channel 945.
clancyhd
For ant. use UHF only Rat Shack U75 pn-15 -2160 or better yet CM 4228.
If you need an amp use CM 7775 Titan
If you need a rotor use CM9521
Do NOT use diplexers or cheap amps like CM Spartan series or any R/S amps. they have high noise and can kill DT signal.
Use RG-6 cable from ant to your amp power supply then split out to your 2 sat rec.

DianaTWCSC 12-01-05, 04:13 PM Universal HD Launched today as part of the HD Tier on channel 945.
The 6 Channel HD Tier including Universal HD requires an HD Converter or HD DVR and remains at the rate of $6.95 a month (i.e., the rate did not go up with the additional channel).

If you read the link I posted it does not say you will charge for the channel but it talks about the "on demand" type services that this channel will lead to when they start to charge us a small fee to watch some programs that were on just recently. I did not mean to infer that TA was going to charge us up front for the channel.
WCSC did broadcast Rudolph in HD last night. CBS sent it to all the stations in 4x3 format. WCSC suspects that Frosty on Dec. 17th will be the same.
LuvThatHDTV 12-01-05, 10:44 PM clancyhd: You shouldn't have any problems with a decent outdoor antenna. Take a look at my website and see if it doesn't help you a little bit. There's a few people on this forum pulling OTA signals from locations more challenging than yours.

COMCAST is working on NBC. Should be soon. Hopefully before the Olympics for sure.
I stopped speculating on WTAT and WCBD. I know that some construction out there is complete. I'll see if I can find anything out.

I emailed the Operations Manager at WCBD about a month ago and he said he expected to get the transmitter around February and start broadcasting from their Awendaw tower before July 1st.

Rudolph was in HD last night, it is in 4x3 format because that is how it was filmed. It is the OAR, and would be the proper way to show it. It was not the same as an upconverted 4x3 signal shown on the HD channels, this was actually a high resolution program. I would expect that Frosty would be the same as well since these were made for TV programs, and who would have thought they would still be showing Rudolph 40 years later (filmed in 1964) on TV. But just to avoid confusion, it was true HD, but of course you are limited by the original source, but still the best it has every been.
lancer1991 12-03-05, 11:55 AM For anyone else who had the problem with the Comcast 8300 box getting mixed up signals between 480p, 780p, and 1080i it appears to have been fixed by a firmware update. I haven't gone in the box to confirm, but I haven't had any issues in the past couple of weeks with the box set to Pass-Through.
Also, if you happen to pause a live broadcast and keep watching it, it doesn't kick you out when the program reaches the end like it use to.
Hope this is new info, haven't seen anything posted on it over the past month.
Happy Holidays.
Mark,
Good to see you back on.
Nuwanda 12-03-05, 01:42 PM Dow Electronics in Savannah had the antenna and rotor for me. So if you are in the market for either the CM4228 or 9521A rotr, give 'em a call. And they price matched my price from Wholesale Industrial Electronics on East Bay.
FWIW,
Has the DVI port on the 8300 been activated yet ? Thiught I waould ask before going and buying a DVI cable. Thanks in advance,

I've been a long time DTV user, but switched to Comcast a few months ago (could not justify both services). I've never been very happy with Comcast, but needed local channels. Now that DTV has local channels, I'm thinking about going back. The question is: does anybody in here know when DTV will make local channel HD available in the Charleston market? Thanks for any info.

I was under the impression they were launching locals in HD according to market size. I think..and someone can correct me if im wrong, Charleston is ranked at somewhere around the 100th market size. So im sure it will be awhile longer before its our turn.
If I had to guess id say we fall in around 2007 or 2008.
Anyone have any more accurate info ?

That's about right...they are adding 12 markets per launch. How frequent will the launches be? Not sure if it will be every 3-4 months or 2x/year. But don't start holding your breath. They just in the last month launched the first 12.

Darthtom 12-07-05, 08:51 PM  OK. So My digital signals, HD signals, and internet signals (all my digital stuff) works great. All of my analog signals are out. That is no reception on TV's without a box and no reception on the non-digital channels on my 8300. I understand that cable goes out. I am not sure why I still get great digital signal but nothing on analog. TWC does not seem to understand either. Anyone else having that problem? They want to know.

OK. It seams that a contractor came by and put a trap on my line in the TWC Pedestal. My guess is that they were trying to block all but internet on someone and are to stupid to read the house number labeled on the tag. It was removed and all is fine again. I was not aware that TWC was able to trap the analog while leaving the digital alone. Apparently, they are not sending the signals on the freq. I thought. I will have to pull out the Spectrum and play. Anyway, if anyone else runs into this problem, check the pedestal for a trap.
BTW, I was not impressed with the tech that came out. He started trying to tell me that my hookup was the problem. I explained that I have been working on these systems for years and that my main hook up would not effect the entire house. He then tried to tell me that my splitters took to much signal. Problem is, he did not know his product specs. He messed with the wrong guy. I design RF systems for a living. After "informing" him of his error I insisted that he go outside and check the inputs. After some debate, he did as I asked and found the trap that had been installed. How many times do you have to tell these people not to touch your stuff? Will they ever learn?
My HDTV is about done...the convergence just went out, and the green gun also has problems and has to be replaced...not to mention the burn in problems I have. So, instead of throwing good money after bad, I am looking to replace my 61" TV. Can't imagine the repair will be cheep, and I don't think soldering in new amplifiers is up my alley (to fix convergence)...anyway, since the repair could be half as much as a new TV, I am looking at the Sammy 5067 DLP; anyone have one? I don't know if 720p max is worth living with (was thinking about the Sony SXRD, but pricey). It is a downsize from my Hitachi, but sure is much thinner. Also, anyone know of a place that would buy my old TV, rather than throwing it away?

Mine is #4006190, so assume HDMI port is NOT active...can I swap it for one that is active if/when I get my new TV with an HDMI input?

What model of Hitachi do you have? I have a 50V500A with a nice red cloud in the middle of it. Wondering if you had the same thing?

I have a 8300HD from Comcast .. anyone know when we can expect changes ? I am getting rather weary with the shoddy interface on these SA boxes ... the gods must have spoken now that Cisco holds the reins. Hopefully, Cisco will get rid of the SA code and build a new interface from scratch.

I have th 61UWX10B - 61" CRT projection TV which is about 5 years old. The convergience is out (colors aren't lining up), and appears to be a couple of amplifier chips from the research I have done (common problem due to heat and poor design). However, I have a red circle in the middle...which I isolated to the green gun as the problem...and I made the green gun worse, but that is another story). I also have burn in from Channel 5's wonderful logo, as well as Fox News (wife insists on watching these). Sooo...even if I fix the convergence at $200-$500, I will still have other problems, and I am not sure I will be happy throwing any money at the TV. Probably would be happy to sell the TV off real cheep and let someone else repair.
I had some work done at Palmetto and they did a good job. I would recommend them? Is this about the Hitachi in your later post?
Yes, I posted that when my convergence started being a problem...but it was intermittent and only seemed to happen when I turned the TV on...now I have multiple TV problems, an dnot sure how much money I am willing to throw at the TV if any. The screen is great, and if someone fixes the convergience and replaced the green gun, it would be a good TV again...but not sure if I am willing to spend the money.

Hello, TWC? Haven't heard anything other than seeing UniHD get added anonymously...this front is very quiet
Almost makes me want to move...
Hatfield 12-10-05, 01:51 PM Awesome news, Frank...although my cable still ain't fixed properly. I'm waiting for another tech right now. That's 3 techs out to try and diagnose the problem and one special request order to change out the tap plate. Still didn't work so I'm waiting for a 4th tech today. Nobody's fault. Comcast has been great and credited me some dough to comensate. I might need some more help if today doesn't fix it, Frank. Thanks, for your help earlier.

Thats great for Comcast guys. TWC... what's up? You know, I have been all over Sinclair and WTAT about their signals. Of course, everyone but TWC now carries them and it seems they are going to get the others as well. I assume that Comcast and Knology will get WBHD before we get FoxHD or anything else. Are we supposed to be impressed by UniHD? Come on. The channel rarely shows anything worth watching. Lets see TWC get it together and get the channels that we want! Diana, lets see some pressure! What do we have to do to get this going?
SCSonyUser 12-12-05, 10:16 AM Yeah come on TWC....
RFrank,
I just replaced my 5-year old 56" Tosh. w/ the HLR5067 and I'm pretty happy with it. But I'm not really a "videophile" by nature. I wasn't ready to jump on the 1080p bandwagon yet.
Glad that COMCAST will have NBC pre-Olympics.

Thanks...I actually picked up the HLR4266 for a great deal ($1400), and it fit in the hole over my fireplace perfectly. The wife loves having the floorspace back. I want the 1080p, and was thinking about the Sony SXRD set...BUT $4000-5000 was a bit much.
Anyone know of someone who would take a 61" HD projection that needs the convergence circuits repaired? It has some value, but I would get rid of it cheep. The repair is inexpensive for parts ($10-15 for two amplifier chips), but the labor was gonna kill me...cut my losses.
I'm still wishing for TWC to get FOX much less NBC... :(
The audio is horrible on the Ind/SD game. It sounds like they are feeding 2 channels into the dolby digital decoder and you can hardly hear the announcers.

There was no 5.1, that much I know. I don't know about others, but my Marantz receiver will not take a digital 2.0 and process it as Pro-logic so I need to switch over to RCA's otherwise it's just right and left speakers.
While listening to it in PL, I didn't notice it, but maybe wasn't paying attention.

Great news about Comcast and NBC. Now I can record NBC shows in HD rather than trying to watch all NBC stuff and record others. Not really excited about UPN, would rather of had WB or something, but hey it's a step in the right direction. With HDTV prices coming down, we may have more HD channels soon. Just noticed a 32" LCD at 1k where they use to be 2k.
My receiver showed Dolby Digital for WCSC on TWC.

To me is tsounded more like they had a mike on the field, on the fans, and on the booth. Someone in the truck seemed to be having fun up-mixing the field chatter to a point where you couldn't hear the announcers...and is that really all THAT bad? :)
It reminded me of a FOX World Series game where they have mikes on the bags and anyone who is stupid enough to wear one. It is one thing to share the excitement of the game, but it is another entirely to overwhelm us with too much "ambient" noise.
I actually had it at a good level, then something happened that got the crowd all up in a tizzy and my wife walked in a told me to turn it down. By the time she left, the crowd noise was down and I never had to turn it down. It is very frustrting having to spend an entire game monkeying with the volume.
atp1313 12-19-05, 11:10 PM I just turned the game on at 11:00 and notice no HD broadcast. Is that because there is absolutely no one out there who gives a rip about either of these horrible teams (Green Bay/Baltimore)? :D Or did some flunky back at Channel 4 fall asleep at the controls?

Well, when it was 0-0, it was in HD. My guess is the latter, watch any game when it is 48-3, puts me to sleep.
New digital channels.......... Jewelry TV........... no comment. Would be great if our provider could " test" the "pay for what you watch" scheme that Cablevision of America is doing.
Hatfield 12-25-05, 11:41 AM Merry Christmas, everybody!! Just turned on the boob tube and found the new channels on Comcast. Early christmas present apparently. All of them except for NBC HD...hope that doesn't mean the deal fell through.
Of course, on a more personal level, the new channels have now screwed up my problem even worse. :( That and it's raining which makes it worse. Pixelation and sound chops galore. Oh well. I'll pin this problem down sooner or later.
Merry Christas/Happy Holidays/Happy Hanakkah!!! :)
j.stouder 12-26-05, 09:45 AM I saw the new lineup for Comcast and noticed UPN as a HD channel. I've read that they do not broadcast in HD locally, just SD and was currious if Comcast was able to pass through a HD signal. I can't get UPN OTA as I don't live within a block of the transmiter, so I don't have a reference signal to compare it to. Anyone in the know? I am very excited about the prospect of NBC in HD as I can now use my DVR for shows on that channel. Merry Christmas all....
Turned Michigan / Nebraska during commercial and noticed 181 NBC-HD was up. Seemed as though they were having problem with audio. I can't receive NBC OTA so I don't know the source of the problem.... i.e. NBC National, NBC Local, COMCAST. I think it was during one of those Law & Order shows. Anyone else know on this?
Didn't notice the other channels. Also don't know about UPN-HD as I'm more than a block away from their transmitter.
Precision Power 12-28-05, 09:50 PM K-Trout,
I had noticed audio "pink noise" problems with NBC during E-ring. It came in once with normal audio, I did notice when it came in the video went from full screen to a boarder on all 4 sides. Normally during commercials you get a 4:3 window, this was like that but with 2 boarders on the top and bottom like letterbox. Then it went to commercial, dropped the letterbox look, and correctly had the 4:3 window. Right after the commercial it wen to full screen with the "pink noise" and been that way since.
I received a reply from the General Manager at WCBD. He indicated that he heard the pink noise also so they are aware of the problem. I actually haven't turned on the TV tonight so I'm not sure of the current status. Guess I should have done that before typing this. Oh well.
I am seeing NBC-HD signal but no listing for UPN-HD. Which channel# is it so I can manually tune to it ?
Thanks
MAX
atp1313 12-30-05, 09:12 AM I had a weird issue late last night with NBC-HD signal. I was watching the repeat of Jay Leno at 2:00am and the picture froze on commercial that was running just ahead of the show. The analog (DirecTV) signal was showing the program just fine. The HD (OTA) was playing audio only...and it was like that for well over 15 minutes...then I went to bed. So not sure how long it was "broken" in total.
Frank @ Comcast - Many thanks to Comcast for NBC-HD and eventually UPN-HD (which I dont see yet).
Question for you ... how does one go about requesting a specific channel ... since I am told that cable operators want to hear from subscribers on what they want to see.
I would like to request National Geographic HD.
Thank you.

Fellow HD fans,
I just wanted to take a minute and share some information about some changes. Frank Thomas has been promoted and moved to another market within Comcast outside of Charleston. I will be handling any forum related issues until his replacement is hired and up to speed. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have problems or concerns.
Additionally there is some new information about UPN HD. Currently UPN is not broadcasting in High Definition, so we did not launch UPN HD on December 31st. Once UPN begins broadcasting in high definition we will launch it immediately, and will send out further communication.
Regards,
Andrews Mcilwain
It will not post my e-mail address until after 5 post please PM me
PS- Comcast always values customer input on future channel additions. I will pass along any channel request to the appropriate people.

Can you provide a quick list of the channel assignments for the HD channels available under extended basic (tuning with a QAM-capable TV w/o a converter box)? My father just purchased an HDTV and is in Mt. Pleasant (zip 29434 i believe) and is unable to locate ABC, CBS, and NBC. He found Fox and PBS in the 70's.

ESPN2 HD would be nice
easymacfu 01-06-06, 09:23 AM Hi,
I'm currently building an HDTV PC and just had a few questions on the Charleston HDTV reception. I live downtown on Bee Street, basically right next to MUSC. I'm wondering if there is any chance that if I buy an ATI HDTV wonder if I can get OTA reception from where I am. I doubt it given my location, given the large trees and buildings around.
Also, I may buy a Dvico fusion, which can receive non-encrypted HDTV channels through the cable (I believe ABC/NBC... not ESPN and such). Would I still need to pay the extra money to get HDTV channels each month, or would the local HDTV channels come in through the cable if I just plug the cable into my card?
Thanks for the help.
Andres @ COMCAST ... Thank you for the update !

Does anyone know how I can get NBC and Fox in the Charleston SC area in HD. I have a Terk HDTVs antenna and I get ABC and CBS perfect, from on my roof. I had the antenna in my living room to try it out and I got ABC, CBS, NBC and SCTV. The channel numbers are as follows, 4.1, 5.1,5.2, 2.1, 2.1, 7.1,7.2,7.3

I don't think you'd have much trouble getting 2, 4, 5 and 7 from that location. They are all pretty easy to get anywhere on the CHS area.
atp1313 01-07-06, 09:12 PM I am just now watching my recording of "Book of Daniel" which premiered on NBC last night. I am noticing an annoying "red shift". Anyone have this issue? Is this an OTA issue, or a transmission issue? And now for the conspiracy theorist question: is this the religious right's way of making people not watch this show that deals with Jesus and might possbily be "sacreligious"? ;) Anyway, I am wondering if I am alone in this...
What does your ant look like UHF,VHF or both
I have the TERK antenna that looks like a big square that you can mount on the roof. I believe it is called TERK model HDTVs. The s is for slim.
joemat go back to page 114 and read about ant. post
1 terk ant are known to be overpriced junk. you need a R/S 2160 $25 or a CM 4228.
When you get a real ant you must point it to where you get the most stations or get a rotor to get them all.
CM 9521 is a good remote controll rotor
CM 7775 is the best amp.

And now for the conspiracy theorist question: is this the religious right's way of making people not watch this show that deals with Jesus and might possbily be "sacreligious"? ;) Anyway, I am wondering if I am alone in this...
While I am always in favor of a good conspiracy theory, I noticed this while trying to watch Conan on Friday night. I assume what you are talking about is what appears to be a red ghost shift. Also on Comcast. I forgot to check OTA, but this was live on Comcast, and it was only on NBC. The analog station did not have it so it was some kind of digital signal malfunction.

It was there OTA and definitely falls into the conspiracy catagory. :D
Well, look at it this way. If you were Buddhist, and the show was about the Dalai Lama...............
Religion and ficticious dramas don't mix well together.
bbarrie 01-08-06, 08:53 PM ESPN2 HD would be nice
NBC-HD just in time for the Olympics is great, but ESPN2 HD in time for the World Cup in June would be excellent. Charleston is a very soccer-happy community and ABC-ESPN has promised to broadcast every game of the World Cup in HD this summer... unfortunately we only get two of their three channels in HD at this point.
thanks
p.s.... while I'm on the soccer kick, any thoughts of adding Fox Soccer Channel to the lineup? They show A-League games from time to time and some people might like to watch the Charleston Battery away games.
p.p.s. the wife would really like to watch Gilmore Girls in HD... any chance of WB-HD?
joemat: You might not be aiming in the right direction. NBC has been working on their permanent facility in Awendaw that will also broadcast FOX, but until it's finished you'll have to get their signal from a different location that you are getting ABC, CBS and PBS (Which are all originating from the same spot).
Here's a link to my website that might help you:
http://www.markuyak.com/schdtv/ota/OTA.htm
Does anyone know when that is going to be done. It is just very disappointing to have such crappy tv stations that should be broadcasting such events as the NFL, Olympics, primetime tv shows and so on and we can not receive them because the charleston tv stations are to cheep to get the job done. You pay all this money to get these stations and it is just disappointing that it take so long for HDTV in charleston to kick off.

Yes it was that annoying "red ghost", but it actually appeared to be multi-colored and was maybe (this may sound weird) a layer or slice of the screen was shifted. If you imagine that the vertical image of the TV screen is made up of several overlapping images, it looked like just one of those layers was shifted to the right. While the red "channel" was the most dominate, there were other colors visible out of synch.
As for the conspiracy, did you notice that during the commercials leading up to the nightly news following the show that they had a Priest, a Monk and a Rabbi (insert your joke here) sitting around a conference table watching the show? Amazingly, the plasma HD screen they were watching showed what appeared to be a perfect visual presentation...no shift of colors. Hmmmmm, show a good copy to the in-house visitors; and show the crappy version to the general public in an effort to make people suffer from headaches and therefore think that they are having a reaction to watching that "Satanic" show...I wonder how many people thought that God was punishing them with a headache or bad eyesight for watching it???
Personally, I plan to continue watching it. I appreciate shows that dance that fine line and occasionally dip a toe into the pool on the "other side". It certainly gets people talking and most of the time, that tends to be a good thing. :p
I have had several request about the non encoded HD channel lineup. I need to check with some other people and get some direction on that matter. Thanks for the patience.

I emailed the Operations Manager at WCBD about 2 months ago and he said they expected to get the transmitter around February and start broadcasting from their Awendaw tower before July 1st.
They do have a web-page with contact info if you click on the "About Us" link at the top of the page. The Operations Manager said he was the correct person to email with any questions about the tower in Awendaw. He seemed very sincere and gave me a nice, long email reply to my questions.

bbarrie 01-14-06, 09:23 PM Hey, I've got a question that one of you may be able to answer. Who controls the HD feed from the affiliate to my TV? I mean obviously the local affiliate is getting both the standard feed and the HD feed (where appropriate) and then passing them both along, but there have been several instances (mostly with WCSC and football games) where there's something that I know is in HD but it isn't being passed along in the proper format through the HD channel on Comcast. I assume that Comcast is getting the same thing that's being transmitted OTA, but is it someone here that has to 'throw the switch' to turn on the HD part or is it someone nationally? Several times watching the CBS football games they plod along in SD for a while and then suddenly it switches over as if someone has just remembered and thrown the switch.
As I'm writing this, for example, WCIV (ABC) is broadcasting the figure skating championship in SD. The ABC website lists this as an HD broadcast and, in fact, the earlier part of the program that was aired earlier in the day (same venue, same cameras) showed up here in HD.
I guess the question is who's screwing up here?
Darthtom 01-14-06, 09:38 PM I have the same problem with ABC and the skating on TWC. It is something from our local ABC channel I think. I guess they dropped the ball on throwing the switch again.
There's not a single correct answer, but the scenario you described is typically what happens. COMCAST passes what it receives.
WCSC typically does a really good job. However, if it's not a game that's scheduled every week, i.e. Monday Night Football game, sometimes the fact that it's in HD will slip through the cracks.
The ice skating is a better example. Might be the first time ever it's been broadcast in HD so the guy at the controls at WCIV might not realize it's in HD and not "hit the switch".
If you notice it, call the station and ask for Master Control. Those guys do care about HD and will generally change the broadcast pretty quick. But, if it doesn't happen right away, it might be because they're running the board.

Are there direct numbers/extensions to these people? I have on occasion had to call a station on a weekend day and gotten the general answering machine saying they are out for the weekend...call back on Monday. Would be great if there was a way to bypass that and get the one or two extensions that actually handle that stuff.

It depends on where you are moving to. TWC covers most of Summerville and Knology has some also. TWC is pretty good but doesn't carry FOX or NBC in HD yet. I think knology carries at least one of them (I only have TWC as an option). TWC (Time Warner Cable) is located on Trolly Road and their number is 843-871-7000. I don't know knology's right off since I do not deal with them.
OTA is not a great option right now. If you have really good equipment (large outside antenna, amp, etc) you will get ABC, CBS, and ETV in HD. Fox and NBC are still running their HD signals off of a 9 Volt battery or less. They do not seem to be able to plan for the future and therefore do not have their full power transmitter up yet.
Best Bet for Summerville is Cable. Maybe one day we can do OTA and get what we should.

I have an interesting problem where I need some help figuring out: I just got an Onkyo surround receiver (TX-SR602) and have picture/sound sync issues. We watch channel 5/810 most and for SD broadcasts, the sound is ahead of the picture, but during HD it is synced up just fine. We have also notice on other SD broadcasts and a few HD (such as the basketball game tonight on TNT). My video runs through the receiver via Component connections, and all the sound is via optical cables. The DVD and PS2 (same type connections for both) seem to work just fine. My TV is a Sammy DLP.
Any ideas about the sound/picture sync? At first I thought it was the video feeding through the receiver causing the problem, but if that was the case, wouldn't it be consistent and uniform through all broadcasts/channels?

Maybe it has to do with the type of audio signal and the type of processing done by your receiver.
A lot of HD programs use dolby digital 5.1 now but some (and most SD) have Dolby 2.0 or PCM stereo. My receiver is a sony and will apply dolby pro logic II (2) processing to anything that's not dolby digital 5.1 The DD 5.1 it will pass through untouched. Maybe the non-5.1 audio is being processed by the DSP on your receiver and this processing is causing the synch problems?
Have you set-up you speaker-distance compensation correctly on the receiver?
Or, when you notice the delay, try disabling all DSP (effects/signal processing)on the receiver and see if that helps

I have noticed this on Channel 5 in SD, but almost all of the time on there News casts. I have checked the other channels at the same time and they are fine. I would say it is not your tv or reciever. I have an Onkyo as well and never had any problems with it. My TV is a sony 43 3LCD and I have no problems with it except for the above mentioned. It is probably the broadcast and not your equipment.

Some of the older Samsung DLP sets had a lip-sync issue and they needed an upgraded digital board. That is a newer model, and the corrections are already built in. Some cable boxes can cause that problem as well. See, the analog video signal needs a little more processing than the audio does, so if you are going from the cable box to the TV video and from the cable box to a receiver for audio, there is going to be an audio delay if the cable box does have a built-in delay circuit for SD audio. Most all new boxes have that.

I have been trying to troubleshoot all day, and have come up with few answers, but it does point to a possible cable box problem:
1. DD signals and HD video seem fine when using the cable box
2. The digital (optical and coax) is slightly ahead of the analog (RCA), and the picture. Had a wicked echo with my surround receiver and TV audio on at the same time.
3. The digital output from the TV seems to be in sync when using the built in tuner of the TV...but I get a slight audio (digital) delay when tuning in HD channels.
So it appears the cable box video is slower than the digital audio for non HD audio sources...how do I fix it? I have the SA8300 from Time Warner
Well, I ended up taking the Onkyo receiver back...got a Sony 998 that has A/V sync (fixed amount of delay). But could have saved a bunch by going with the 898...thought the on-screen display would be better than it is (my receiver is hidden). Oh well, things are better now:)

I can't believe it. 2-1,2-2 and 36-1 drop for like a split second but come right back in.

Was that Winegard antenna an outside antenna? If so, then you were probably overdriving the signal. With Digital HD signals, a tuner that receives a signal that is too strong will act as if there is no signal at all, and it is easier to overdrive these digital signals than it is analog.

Wow...just jerry rigged a set of rabbit ears up, and guess what...BINGO. Apparently FOX has gone full power, as that DT reception is the strongest of them all. Now if we can just get NBC to crank it up a bit. Wow, FOX HD, just in time for football to be over :D
I live in Wescott also. I have been using an antenna I have stuck in my window and I am getting all the channels 2,4,5,7 at about 80. Friday I started getting 24 at about 90. Sometimes Columbia comes in. I am hoping to get Savannah.

loadams 01-23-06, 11:21 AM I think WTAT's up to something............... got my Silver Sensor on the floor facing the fireplace receiving 70% !!!
Checked today, atmospheric tricks possibly, can aim to ARCO and Awendaw and still receive WTAT.
Can get UPN sound only, no pic with the same setup.
I'm cool with that. ;)
LuvThatHDTV 01-23-06, 11:52 AM I have an outside antenna and have always been able to get Fox and UPN once I upgraded to a UHF only antenna (pretty good line of sight from here), but I always had a limited range aiming with the antenna to get either of them. Now I can get a strong signal over about 75% of the antenna aiming range. It sure makes using the HD Tivo nicer!
Now if only I could get NBC better I'd be set. Because of a bad line of sight with NBC I can get up to 95% signal, but it will drop to 0 about once a minute, no matter what the atmospheric conditions are. Oh well, 5 out of 6 ain't bad. And, if we could get a WB station OTA, my wife would be !
I Am Able To Get Wtat Dt Here In Vance,s.c. As Good As Wcsc Dt And Witv Dt. I Get
Wciv Dt Sometime.
I think WTAT must have started their powerup last weekend. I was able to watch the game and the premier of "24" at a signal strength of 35 OTA with an attic mount RadioShack UHF antenna (I live in Legend Oaks, HWY 61). That was the first time I had been able to recieve their signal at all. Yesterday I was pleased to see a signal strength of 95 on WTAT, which is as high as WCSC! We missed football but at least "24" will be in HD.
Phil
Same here 24-1 is now better than 5-1 in Beaufort
24-1 & 36-1 strongest of all here in Summerville...the only one with low signal strenth is 2-1, but my Sammy has a built in amplifier, so I can now pick up all the OTA signals.
Hmm...
I would guess WTAT/WMMP went full power.

mikeld999 01-24-06, 09:11 PM I have Comcast cable and was happy to see that NBC HD is now in the lineup. But am having some trouble with some of the other channels. Last but not least, UPN channel 185 hasn't come on yet. Any reason why?
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment... :)

I can help you with UPN, they don't currently broadcast in HD in our market, so Comcast opted not to broadcast it until it is in HD.
I think I've had the same issue with they grey screen on one of the INHD stations but can't recall if it was a game or not when it did it.
Sorry, don't spend much time on any station that isn't ranged between 173 and 190, but while surfing down through those non awesome picture stations, I've never noticed no audio.
lancer1991 01-24-06, 10:21 PM Anyone have a Sony rear projection CRT HDTV with built in tuner? I believe my tuner bit the bed, but haven't had much luck in finding any info about whether this may be a common problem. I've posted elswhere on this forum, but just curious of what my neighbors might have and experienced.
It is my understanding (recent announcement) that UPN and WB will no longer be on the air.
They were purchased by CBS, will be shut down and a new channel (forget the Station I.D. Letters) will be taking thier place.
Not sure of the timeline on all of this!

Mike,
Thanks for being a Comcast customer. I am a Comcast employee. We will get you taken care of. I posted earlier in this thread we choose not to launch UPN we when found out it had not launched in HD in Charleston.
The INHD NBA basketball games being blacked out is a question I cannot answer. I will talk with our engineering folks and get you an answer.
As for the audio problems on channel 115, 116, and 121 that is news to me. I will also pass that information on to our engineers.
Please do me a favor and either e-mail me or PM with your account information (home address, phone number, and TV model) so that if the audio problem is a localized problem we can see what part of town it is in.
Also-With the UPN and WB combination we do not have any immediate information on how this will affect us in Charleston. When we do I will share it.

I think UPN-HD might be questionable as Andrew has already pointed out.
I was happy to see that 203 was left open, possibly for ESPN2-HD.
Can't wait to someday watch the Dodgeball Championships on the OCHO-HD one day, maybe when I'm retired.
Has anyone heard if the NFL Network runs in HD (in any market)? I just read eight NFL games will be run on that network...time now to lobby TWC to add that channel, and it would be great if HD was available.
Here is a link to have a letter sent directly to your cable/satellite provider in case you don't have the NFL Network (pretty easy too): http://nfl.viewerlink.tv/
shuttermaker 01-29-06, 10:27 AM Knology has the NFL Network but not in HD
NFL network is not on "any" TW cable systems. TW is very demanding and really does not care about its customers but only its bottom line. Basically the same reason we don't get ESPN2HD or ESPNU. If you look at the channels/services TW has added very few of them have anything to do with customer demand. It still gets into the discussion about how many channels do you really watch. Since we now have had HD for about a year, we watch the network shows in HD and ESPN HD. My wife watches a few things she likes that are not HD and I will watch some sports and news things non HD. We -- ok me -- really pay the $6.95 a month for the HD package to get ESPN HD and maybe with the Olympics coming up will watch the NBC channel they added but we rarely watch the other channels in the HD package unless they show a sports event live in HD. So of the how ever many channels TW gives us we watch about 20 or so on any regular basis. Maybe it is time for al a carte and I could get rid of a lot if stuff I don't want to see!! I used to have a service called Starsight that was a early on screen guide. It was wonderful but the current on screen guides put them out of business. With Starsight you could block any channels you did not want to see -- they would just be gone -- not some block screen. So we blocked all the channels we never watched. So in our case we had no religious channels and no home shopping channels at all, didn't even see a listing for them. Also starsight let you rearrange the channels to meet your needs, so I had all the sports channels in one group, all the news in other and so on. That way the TV list was the way I wanted it not the way the cable company wanted. oh well maybe some day! GO STEELERS!
COMCAST has NFL network as well, but also not in HD.
I was hoping they would consider using Channel 200 for it. Share it with the Braves.
shuttermaker 01-29-06, 05:23 PM I have a question. First of all, to my understanding, the NFL Network will be showing 8 actual games beginning next year starting on Thanksgiving. The games will be provided by the networks that were scheduled to carry them i.e. FOX, CBS, etc. So my question is if the original broadcaster transmits the game in HD, can the NFL Network rebroadcast it in HD to those viewers capable or utilizing it?
Having watched the NFL Network thru the course of this past regular season. When they broadcast their "game of the week" its condensed into a one hour format that could have been seen in HD on one of the big networks. However, the condensed version is not in HD.
Try asking in the HD Programming forum.

Read this in the HD programming forum from a member in NE Ohio
We already have NFL Network HD here, so nothing's different for me (unless I move or dump Adelphia, or if TWC for some reason doesn't keep carrying NFL Network HD).
I'd be shocked if these games were not in HD. Why even HAVE an NFL Network HD channel if you won't run games in HD?
...maybe with the Olympics coming up will watch the NBC channel they added...
They have NBC HD where you are at? Ha, we are still waiting on that BASIC service, so I guess the NFL Network is just a dream :D
Precision Power 01-30-06, 10:09 PM Has anyone heard if the NFL Network runs in HD (in any market)?
Directv has a channel somewhere in the upper 90's for NFL Network HD. A few years ago every game of the week was simulcasted on 212 SD & 98 HD. Last year it was hit & miss sometimes Directv had the channel set up sometimes it wasn't.
Maybe if they are showing live games, we will definitely have them in HD.

This is one of the key things about Tivo that will keep me using their service. I had Comcast's DVR for a while and it drove me nuts how "stupid" the AI was on the SA8000/8300. From what I understand, some of the nagging issues have been fixed through patches/downloads. But the ability to NOT show certain channels in a line-up is a HUGE help. Out of some 400 channels that I am capable of getting, I have my main list narrowed down to about 30, which includes every possible HD carrier.
How powerful a statement is it that we choose to ONLY watch HD broadcasts!?! I am a huge Duke Basketball fan, and I am so glad that most of their games this year have been/will be in HD. The few that I have watched NOT in HD drives me nuts. :)
And I wonder about the "a la carte" concept whether or not those shopping channels and bible-beater channels would survive/thrive? Around here there are probably enough people willing to pay $1.00 for each faith channel, or whatever the basic recovery cost would be for Comcast, et al.
DianaTWCSC 01-31-06, 05:17 AM RFrank - I believe kjpjr is referring to Universal HD (owned by NBC Universal). I don't have the complete schedule yet, but that channel is supposed to carry live HD of Olympics too (as I understand it - I could be wrong about the live part on Universal HD!!!)
As soon as I source the HD Programming schedules I will post for you guys for Universal HD.

Radio Shack, baby! Even Lowe's has a few to choose from...
Toowanbee 01-31-06, 01:27 PM Hmm.. I checked both web sites. I didn't see any directional ones. I'll take a ride over to James Is and check both places. I was just looking on antennas direct web site trying to find out if they had any way to get it to me that fast.
My 8300HD will reboot on its own every so often when we are watching in the middle of the day, it did it today about 11:45 AM. I would guess this happens about once a month or so. It may happen more often but the set is off a lot during the day and we record very little during the day. Any one else see this problem? I also have to reboot manually every so often to get the volume levels to work right or I have to keep turning the sound higher and higher. I do not use the sound from the TV at all but have a home theater system that I use all the time.

I have Knology and was experiencing the same rebooting problem with my 8000HD in the bedroom. I was sure that it was a overheating heating problem. I called Knology and they replaced the box...end of problem. My 8300HD box in the living room has been fine. Call your cable provider and have them swap it out.

Toowanbee 02-01-06, 07:58 PM Thanks. Picked one up this morning and installed. Works awesome. SUPERBOWL IN HD BABY!!! Weeeeee.
Diana,
Has SDV been rolled out in Summerville? Also, when will Start Over be available.
Thanks for all you do.
Phil
DianaTWCSC 02-03-06, 04:57 AM Good Morning,
SDV yes
Startover probably late 1Q early 2Q. We are waiting on a piece of equipment to come in and be installed before we can take it beyond the city of Columbia. Once we get that, the rest of the roll out to the Division should be pretty fast.
Diana,
Has SDV been rolled out in Summerville?
Phil
Help for the clueless...what is "SDV?"
