I'm new to this forum and have been reading with interest all morning.

My question is has any one in this forum had any luck with going through the HD network channel waiver process so you can receive HD network channels (NY/LA) via DirecTV? I've had no success thus far and DirecTV suggested this moring I go to the Charleston County Commisioner to get a waiver directly that I would fax back to DirecTV.

If this is a wild goose chase I would ask for any recommendations on atenna selection. I live in Hollywood, SC just outside the Stono Ferry community and have many tall trees surrounding the house. If an antenna doesn't need to be manipulated once installed that would be preferred given I don't want to be crawling on the roof 30 feet in the air. I'm 40 miles for the local ABC/CBS tower and 25 miles from NBC.
Any recommendations on local installer would be appreciated too.

My equipment:

55HDT52 Hitachi 55" HD Plasma
Directv HR10-250 HD Receiver/DVR
Pioneer Elite AV Receiver

Thank you for any comments.

Well, I guess somebody ticked off FOX's master control. The Comcast HD feed went dark a few minutes ago(Busch race) so I tried the number given earlier(529-2250) and it was disconnected. Bummer.
Can't get too mad though with this storm rolling through. FOX has been rockin' the past couple weeks; I even stopped keeping track. Sorry for those looking forward to my weekly report. :D

And HDHollywood, search the thread for CM4228 and check www.antennaweb.org for where to point it. Terks are over-priced junk as oljim so eloquently puts it. :p And we all agree.

KTrout, this last question from HDHollywood has inevitably brought up my last post to you. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7198076&&#post7198076
You don't have to do anything with your sight, just the basics. Antennas and where to get them(Wholesale Industrial Electronics) and where the transmitting antennas are(Channel 2 and Awendaw). Again, just a suggestion. :)

First, let me say to anyone who was directly or indirectly affected by the severe weather and possible tornados this afternoon: we hope you are okay.

But now back to the rest of us (and here is where I might get flamed)...a note to WCSC:

We the general public appreciate and understand the need for immediate and responsible weather updates when severe weather threatens. However, once the threat has cleared and we are simply experiencing rain, can we not return to "normal" broadcasting of the Masters? At the very least, can you run the split screen on the analog only signal and run the Masters as full screen brilliant HD? I think giving us the option of the two different signals would satisfy the ENTIRE population. As much as we want information about what is and has been happening around town, I don't think we need constant phone reports from the Firestone across from the Coburg Cow. Save that stuff for the news.

Again, if anyone reading this was affected by the tornado and severe weather, or knows someone who was, I hope you are okay. But let's get back to the Masters!!!

There is a weather sub-channel. Why can't they just direct people to it?

lol...or better yet, look outside your window.

But seriously, all these local networks spend a heckuvalot of money on their mediocre at best weather radars. If you think they are going to pass up the slightest possibility that they can try and show them off...youre kidding yourself.

Come on, guys. Everyone in the Lowcountry area knows that the weather is the biggest thing to hit the local press since sliced bread. Always has been. :)
Not many "top stories" around here. A "big" story ya'll might remember: a few years back, channel 5's "big" story they started the 6 '0 clock news with was a kitten thrown out of a car window along the James Island Connector. Apparently a "huge" enough story to start the broadcast with. I was raised in Atlanta so I just had to chuckle. I love cats and all, but come on.
So...welcome to Charleston. :) The local news loves the rain. :p Ever since Hugo it's here to stay. Weather is the prime story in these parts.

My daughter is in Ocala FL and is 70+ mies from Orlando and can not get HD waivers.

If anyone decided to do a little channel surfing during these storms you would notice that WCSC was the last to drop their radar split screen. I flipped over to WCBD and WCIV and neither was showing their radar for about 10 minutes before WCSC. The worst was that angular split, you couldn't see what was happening on golf nor the radar, it was just a complete waste.

For those of you on TW, you lucked out with the Universal broadcast. I'm sure you were watching HD golf this morning while us on Comcast had no such luck as CBS didn't broadcast the 8am 3rd round. Why can't Comcast do something similar with their IND, they seem to cover the red carpet of all the award shows on those channels, so why not an agreement on golf for those channels that aren't YD in certain markets.

On another note, where is WCSC's DD 5.1 today, only 2.0?

Good Morning,

TWC is happy to announce the conclusion of negotiations for our carriage of WCBD NBC HD on our Summerville lineup.

Currently we are awaiting receipt of equipment to accomplish the launch. We anticipate everything will be in place by the second week in May. Upon determination of the exact launch date, I will immediately post!

Have a great day.

I have very large differences in volume between local stations OTA. Clarity is excellent and no static. If I forget lower volume before surfing sometimes it seems I could blow speakers (A/V Rec) if not my ears.

Does anyone else have this OTA?

I experience this on Knology...and its not only between local stations...it happens in transition from programming to commercials then back again to programming...very very annoying.

I thought there was some sort of law about jacking up the volume when going into commercials...maybe im wrong...if i am, there should be a law.

What antenna do y'all recommend for someone living in Mount Pleasant? Currently I have a GE TV94714 amplified indoor and the only stations I can get are WCSC, WTAT (sometimes - if I hold my toungue just right), ETV, and something called SC Channel. I'll probably have to restrict myself to an attic mounted antenna, since I live in a townhouse. Any ideas?

This happens to me with OTA NBC mostly. The SD programming is soft on volume, but the HD is better/closer to other channels' volume. When I watch a Tivo copy of the Channel2 news, then switch to a Tivo copy of the ABC National news, I have to be careful to lower the volume. But once the Prime TIme lineup starts and the signal is generally all HD, I hardly notice the problem.

Here we go again with ant info. for the Charleston area
There is no such thing as HD ant. all ants. are UHF, VHF or both all you need is a UHF. all local stations are on DTV ch 30 to 50
AMPs will not help a poor ant. and could hurt signal by adding noise. do not buy an amp if it does not give a noise figure of under 3 DB. CM 7777 and 7775 are 2 DB. Most R/S amps are 4+ lower is gooder
Attic install can reduce signal by 50%
If you have a sat system, run a cable just for ant, diplexers will reduce signal and give you a nightmare if you want to add a amp for ant.
Dish clipon ant suck
Here is a list of comman UHF ant with net gain for ch30 to 50, with price. more gain is better
CM 4228 gain 15-16 DB $49
CM 4221 gain 12-13 DB $25
Winegard 4400 11-13 DB $19
Terk 32 same as 4400 11-13 $90
R/S 15-2160 12-13 DB $25
Square Shooter 6-8 DB $99
Terk HDTVs 6-8 DB $130
Silver Sencer indoor 7 DB best bet for indoor ant
Price was from Solidsignal.com and has picture of all the above ant.
HOAs can NOT keep you from putting up a ant on you property.
And last but not least ONLY A JERK WILL SELL YOU A TERK

However, the media box on the Sceptre 42" Naga has a coaxial ATSC connector and from what I can tell, the RS antenna has a twin lead screw on connection. How would I connect that antenna to a coaxial connection? Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

You will need RG-6 cable from TV to ant. to hook cable to ant get a 300-75 ohm transformer

I just moved to Charleston from Chicago and am currently a Comcast subscriber. I had Comcast/HD in Chicago and was pleasantly suprised with the digital box and reception quality. It was the new Motorola box. Now I have this Scientific Atlanta box that has menus straight out of 1990. Does anyone know if there are any plans for the local Comcast to get with the times and upgrade the box and/or InDemand service? Also, Comcast Chicago carried InDemand HD offerings...nothing here. I do understand this is a smaller market and things will have to come later---that I can accept. However, I'm paying the same price for lousier service. Outside of those things, we're loving Charleston. Great place!

In case the Comcast guy is lurking around here somewhere, I just wanted to give him a friendly reminder that ESPN2 HD would be an exceedingly popular addition to their lineup. ABC/ESPN is spreading the big hype about how every game of the upcoming (June) World cup is going to be broadcast in HD, but unfortunatly probably about half of those games will be on ESPN2 which is not only not in HD on Comcast but also is not digital and therefore not terribly good quality. Also, I suspect there are some baseball fans in here that would be glued to their HDTVs all summer if we had the Duece in HD.

Thanks.

Diana, I was scanning the line up for the new NBC HD channel on Time Warner...nothing yet:( Any word? The real reason I am dropping you a line is that while I was scanning, I noticed a few channels, specifically 350 to 368 which appear to be repeats of other channels lower in the line up. One, 366 (TWC), says I need to subscribe to it. It seems some of them are digital versions of the analog lower end, but others are repeats of the digital tier (or is everything "digital" now with a converter box?). Is this a glitch, or is Time Warner rearranging the line-up?

Also, going to a four digit channel format is a pain...sure would have been nice to fit those two channels down in the three digit range...alas, suppose this is a sign of a significantly expanded line-up in the future? Sure hope the HD line-up gets bigger this year...maybe The Duce?? (ESPN2) Guess I can get used to adding a "0" to my direct channel inputs :D

I had not noticed the 350-368 thing. You seem to be right, they are duplicates of several digital and analog channels but they say I am not suscribed either. Hmmmmm.... What's up with that?

DianaTWCSC

350 - 368 is The Family Choice Tier if you subscribe to it you cannot subscribe to anything else on our lineup. You can get HD Broadcast, but not Tier. Let me know if you want to know specifics, but its really only for Familys who only want G rated programming in their homes -- period.

WCBD is probably going to be the 15th - we are waiting on equipment and if we are lucky it will get her the 2nd week of May like we hoped, but the vendor seems to be dragging its feet.

Nothing new on the Sinclair front or ABC Disney negotiations.

LOST in HD via OTA doesn't seem to be here tonight. The SD (via DirecTV) is coming in fine, but there is no signal at all via OTA. Is this me or area-wide?

Also, last night's presentation of Boston Legal (via OTA) was garbled fro most of the show. Infact, for the 1-hour length of the show, my Tivo was only able to record 10-15 minutes total.

Is ABC falling apart recently? Or is my equipment falling apart? This is only happening with ABC-HD OTA.

I caught more than half of Lost last night via Knology, and it was HD, as was Invasion. My DVR is full at the moment, so I didn't get the first part. To my knowledge, Knology pulls WCIV-DT OTA.

On a related note, does anyone else notice that the analog originated material on WCIV-DT has a distinctly greenish tinge? The HD stuff looks great, but if they switch to the analog feed it looks awful on my set. I figure since they don't monitor an off-air DT signal, they don't know what it looks like, and just need to adjust their equipment, but that's just my guess.

Was anyone able to get WCIV 4.1 OTA tonight? I switched over to the tuner tonight because of repeated dropouts on my 8000 (time to call Knology to check the drop again), but couldn't get 4.1. I could get 5.1 and 7.1/2/3, which originate on the same tower, so figure they were doing something. Oddly, Knology had signal on 901 - perhaps they get it a different way or something?
(I did try to reprogram the set and reorient the antenna, no change.)

Yes, I have always had the greenish tint on 4-1 as well as noticably lower sound level HD OTA. Really irritating having to adjust if you want to stay there. So I try not to (hint to someone that cares if you are out there).

I need to re-orient my antenna this weekend and wanted to check the compass/degrees for the towers relative to me. This is what AntennaWeb.org has to say:

DTV Antenna
Type Call Sign Channel Network City State Live
Date Compass
Orientation Miles
From Frequency
Assignment
* yellow - uhf WITV-DT 49.1 PBS CHARLESTON SC 111° 21.7 49
* yellow - uhf WCSC-DT 5.1 CBS CHARLESTON SC 111° 21.7 47
* green - uhf WCIV-DT 4.1 ABC CHARLESTON SC 111° 21.7 34
* red - uhf WCBD-DT 2.1 NBC CHARLESTON SC 152° 17.1 50

* blue - uhf WTAT-DT 24.1 FOX CHARLESTON SC 166° 10.1 40

Does anyone know if this has been updated for Fox/UPN or anyoine else who is now beaming from Awendaw? By the way, I am in Goose Creek (Crowfield) if you need that to orient the compass/degrees.

That would be up to you as the Forum Member to create and develop support for the thread.

A couple of years ago the Columbia group tried to establish a TWC thread for SC to co-exist with the various DMA threads. Participants tended to double post their questions and comments in both threads which is not as effective. Ultimately it didn't get participation and died.

I agree totally.

To me, all the local stations' SD lack consistency.
CBS has terrible looking local news, but their national SD feed looks pretty good. (i.e. Survivor and others)
NBC has good looking local news and national SD. (i.e. The Apprentice) But they still aren't on their tower yet!!!
ABC has pretty good local news and terrible national SD. (i.e. Extreme Home Makeover)
Fox has crappy stretched local SD and OK national SD. (i.e. The Simpsons) And their audio can be terrible, especially when they are showing previews for the 10:00 news during IDOL.
UPN isn't even worth commenting on.
And I won't even start a 1080i vs. 720p debate, so I'll skip the HD comments

Do any of the local stations actually check-out their digital feeds, especially the locally generated SD material?

We have faced some challenges with the equipment vendor. They received the PO and then someone went on vacation and we found out when he got back this week that nothing happened while he was out. I haven't received an update since Tuesday, but essentially as soon as we receive the equipment we will get it installed and I'll let immediately post. I'm guessing within 7 days, but I can't promise because the entire process is out of my control and for the most part its out of TWC control.

Has anyone had difficulty receiving OTA WCIV-DT (ABC)? I'm in Johns Island, and I usually get 90-100% on all the usual DTV/HDTV channels in the area. But beginning yesterday afternoon, I am getting NO signal whatsoever. All other channels are fine. I called WCIV, and they said they are broadcasting...everything is normal. Is this a glitch in my setup, or is WCIV messing with the broadcast? BTW, I'm using a Silver Sensor mounted under an overhand on the second floor of my house with a Zenith 1080 receiver. I'm on River Road, next to the Stono.

Anyone else who likes "The Office" having trouble with the sound?? I started watching tonight's 40 min episode on a recording buffer tonight, and i noticed that during such crucial moments as when the main characters kiss for the first time, the SOUND DROPS OUT!! I try to stay legal when possible.

So anyone try to watch Satruday Night Live last night in HD? It almost completely unwatchable, but not for the usual reasons. The sound cut out at least a half-dozen times including during both Paul Simon songs. This has happened on several NBC shows in the past week and I'm thinking it's not a local issue 'cause all the local commercials are working fine. Anyone else seeing this?

This has happened on several NBC shows in the past week and I'm thinking it's not a local issue 'cause all the local commercials are working fine. Anyone else seeing this?

I have seen this happen on just about every NBCHD program over the last week. For me, it started last weekend with the hockey game. When it came on, it was in HD, then after commercial, the HD was there, but no audio. Then they switched to SD with good audio. I called Master Control and asked if they forgot to switch back to HD and would the game be in HD. The response was that they were having problems with their HD retransmission. The head engineer was called in and they would fix it ASAP.

Then throughout the week, different HD shows have the same problem sporadically. As long as the SD signal is going, there havbe not been any dropouts...only on HD. For instance, during SNL last night, the sound dropped out and then they switched to SD, and we could hear again. So half the show was either in SD with audio or HD with no audio. And not all of the commercials were working. Only the commercials that were run after the show was in SD and cut to commercial. If they cut to commercial while in HD, the 30-second spots were sometimes working, but not if the preceeding HD audio was not working.

I am no expert, but this would point to a local problem. This would be easier to understand and compare if we were in a HD-via-satellite DMA. But since this area will not have Local HD via D* or E* until next year at the earliest, we shouldn't hold our breath. Instead, it would be nice if someone could contact a local engineer and get an update on the HD retransmitter here in Charleston. Maybe this is one of those $.79 Radio Shack switch fixes...maybe it is a $10,000 manufacturer warranty replacement issue.

By the way, my HD is via OTA, not cable.

Tonight, WCIV forgot again to flip the HD switch so I called the number that hdmole provided. 971-4403 which usually goes straight to the chief engineer's voice mail. Since that one goes to voice mail and there's that chance that he won't check it until tomorrow, I then decided to call the newsroom. 723-4403. I don't know who I talked to, but I just said, "Could you tell master ocntrol to flip the HD switch?" She hestitantly said yes. A couple secs later, they flipped it. So that's what you have to do to remind them. Try the first number of the chief engineer, then, if it goes to voice mail, call the newroom. Voila.

Hey if the Comcast folks are trolling here...

I saw a rumor on a soccer bulletin board that Comcast will be doing a temporary deal to carry ESPN2-HD for the duration of the World Cup this summer. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's any truth to that and if so when they might announce it. I know a lot of people who are serious enough about their soccer that they are planning to pick up one of the satellite services just to be assured of seeing their games in HD.

ABC/Disney/ESPN have been heavily promoting the fact they will be broadcasting every game of the tourney in HD, but unfortunately the opening game for the United States will apparently be on ESPN2, which is not only not in HD here but is on an analog channel that is just not very clear.

Thank you for any insight.

I don't know the answer, but did run into this factlet:
Beginning in September, WCBD will show the CW on digital subchannel 50.2. The expansion will put another station on the air in Charleston and increase WCBD's strength in an already competitive market.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WCBD-TV

According to a related link, WBLN-14 is part of a cable-only service called The WB 100+, which gets that network into small markets like ours. Since The CW is taking over for UPN and WB, and our UPN affiliate is not joining the CW, I wondered what was going to happen.

Oh, that's right , $$$$$$$$$!

No doubt. I was wondering why, with a "real" station and DT slot for 36, the UPN affiliate wouldn't become a CW affiliate. Instead, they (Sinclair) chose to become a NewsCorp affiliate for the new "My Network TV" network, which will broadcast an entirely new slate of programming that they're creating, including (English?) telenovelas. The comment I found for another station was that "My Network TV" made better financial sense for them. Seems like a waste, but I don't make those kind of decisions for a living.

It looks to me like WCBD is not particularly committed to the quality brought about by DT. Clearly, they're more interested in the revenue streams from additional program offerings, which is the same argument playing out all over the dial. Let's face it, they'll only commit to the highest quality HD if it attracts observable ad dollars.

It's this kind of reasoning that brings me back to wanting satellite delivered network TV without the local b.s. Give us NBC-HD, ABC-HD, etc. Just like HBO-HD, I want the programming delivered by the major networks to come to me in full HD, without commercial interruption or picture deterioration by local stations that can't afford to upgrade their equipment. I'd pay for those channels, whether through satellite or cable delivery. Of course, this isn't our TV model today - the programs are almost incidental to the advertising; would people tune in to a local channel just for news, local programming, weather etc.? Yes, in major markets, where "independent" stations used to deliver some mix of that plus syndicated programming. But then, you get into the Syndex rules, which say that if a program is delivered by a local station with an exclusive contract, the provider isn't allowed to bring in another copy. I haven't seen it recently, but used to - have those rules changed?

Anyway, these ideas are probably more appropriate for another thread.

This is absolutely bad news for Charleston HD interests. Before WCBD even goes full strength they will be losing picture quality. Make no mistake this will reduce the quality of the HD picture and we will all see it. This new station is not a HD station, but will take bandwidth from that allocated to WCBD for their NBC station and it is definitely noticeable. To see the effect watch something with any movement on the PBSHD station. It has reduced bandwidth due to two other stations (the digital rebroadcast of the SD station, and the SC channel).

We should all hope that Comcast, Knology and TW do not carry it. Because if they don't then you can bet that WCBD will not run it for long. If they do you can forget about a good picture on Sunday night Football on NBC this fall.

HDTV/DTV wasn't intended to be like this. Nothing irritates me more than having an expensive 62 inch TV looking like crap. Give me one channel of quality programming in HD and get out of the sub channel mentality. WCBD needs to look at WCSC to see what quality HD is intended to be.

While I obviously cannot speak for other MSOs, the TWC Retransmission Contract provides as set amount of bandwidth to the broadcaster for transmission of their signal. It does not allow us to restrict what they show, so it is entirely in their court to determine if the entire amount is devoted to HD or split between HD and SD.

So, the onus will be on viewers to vote with their remote by not tuning in... ratings rule!

Some of the programs the CW will carry are made in HD (like Smallville) - I don't know what percentage of the schedule it is. I presume it will be up to WCBD as to whether they transmit it as HD. That stinks! It's happened to me though, but never for an 8pm show like Alias. Usually for the 9 or 10pm shows when the 8 or 9 show went over by a few minutes and the DVR either thinks the show isn't scheduled and doesn't record or doesn't record the previews for the next week. Why can't they just do shows hour to hour?! This "extra minute to attract more of an audience" is for the birds!
You didn't miss much IMO, I think they've tried tying up all the loose ends of Alias entirely too quickly. You can watch it for free over at www.abc.com.

“The Biggest Sporting Event in the World”

This is not hyperbole. It is an awesome feat. But what does it mean? Every four years we have the pleasure of enjoying a convergence of two events that claim to be the Biggest Sporting Event in the World. How can they both make the same claim? It’s pretty easy when you consider their qualities.

On the one hand, you have the Indianapolis 500, held every Memorial Day weekend. Over 300,000 people attend the event, plus another 325 million viewers world-wide tune in to watch the event from their homes or the local pub.

On the other hand, you have the FIFA World Cup. Having spent a great deal of my youth and early adulthood playing soccer, this is my Shangri-la. I count down the days to the World Cup. And I am not alone.

The World Cup is held every four years and attracts 350 million fans for the final game. Over the course of the entire month of the tournament, more than 30 Billion fans from just about every corner of the globe will tune in to catch any or all of the 63 games. That’s BILLION with “B”.

So how can they both claim the title of “Largest Sporting Event”? The Indy 500 is a one-day event; the World Cup is spread over about a month. So each is accurate to a degree. So what else do these events have in common? This year, they are both being brought to you by the ABC family of networks (with ESPN providing coverage for most of the Cup games). But to me, this where the similarities end.

ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 will be broadcasting each and every game of the World Cup in High Definition. That’s 63 games over 30 days that will be beamed back to the US in stunning HD. This is a huge undertaking that will require many trucks, engineers and technicians. I cannot even imagine the engineering aspects of this task. I am just looking forward to all that soccer in HD.

However, back here in the good ole US of A, we cannot expect to see the largest sporting event to take place on US soil in anything but Standard Definition. According to the reports that I have read, there will be about 40 stationary cameras being used around the 2.5-mile race track. There will be other remote cameras in the pits and elsewhere around the track, but the crux of the issue at hand is 40 cameras located in one facility. Not scattered across an entire country. Not half a world away. But right here in the Midwest.

Don’t get me wrong, I will watch the race even in sub-standard definition, but how incredible would it be to watch it in HD? Is it too much to ask? According to Dave Gass, director of field operations and engineering for IMS (Indy Motor Sports) Productions - who provides the “pool” feed of the race to ABC for redistribution around the world – “there is no immediate pressure to produce the Indianapolis 500 in high definition; but the possibility is out there and the HD threshold may have to be crossed sooner rather than later.” He is also quoted as saying “ABC said that it wasn't going to do [HD] for three years, but after going to NAB2003, with all the interest in high-def, I feel it's a lot more imminent than people think it is.” This is from an interview given in May 2003.

Well, it’s been three years…we’re still waiting. And there is definitely an interest in all the people who have made the plunge into HD. High Definition is more than just watching a screen that is larger and brighter. It is about being able to display a screen image that is not blurry, even when watching from a stationary camera as a car whizzes by at over 200MPH. It is about clarity. And Standard Definition just does not have the clarity that we – the HD population – desire, nay demand.

So ABC, while I am very excited about what and your ESPN brethren have arranged for my viewing pleasure this summer in the way of the World Cup entirely in HD, I think it might be about time you took a look in your own back yard and realized that there are still great things to be done here. I sincerely hope that many more of my friends who have been wishing for HD to come to the Indianapolis 500 will take a few minutes to write a letter letting you know how they feel about your substandard broadcast of the World’s Largest Sporting Event. Maybe then you can convince your “pool” provider that they need to step up to the plate as well.

NBC - the vendor was to ship the receiver on Friday, so I guess we will know tomorrow if we got it 'overnight' (including weekend and holiday) to get installed for Thursday activiation.

Sinclaire - still in negotiations. I'm still not going to provide any guesses as to when it will be executed.

Thanks for the update. I look forward to the addition of NBC. I hope and pray that TWC can get Fox taken care of before football season.

Since TWC is going to carry NBC digital/HD.... will they also include the CW when is comes online in?

Yeah, I am seeing on OTA 2-1. If that thing is going to always be there, it will eventually "burn-in" and that will piss me off. Hopefully they can drop it and only show it from time to time as required by whatever contract they might have. Much more damaging (potentially) than the CBS "eye".

I have the package mainly for the Tiger games and it will go back and forth. I never know which team's announcers will be until the game comes on the air. I have it with TW but I am sure it is the same everywhere. I also get the hockey package and it is the same way for the Red Wing games -- sometimes those are even the TSN (Canada ESPN) announcers. I find that I like that since you get a different slant on the game but you still get to watch it. A lot of times my wife and I will watch the games with the sound off and just watch the game and talk about other stuff without the talking heads!

Diana, Thanks for your input here. But wouldn't be up to the MSO to choose what to show. For example, Comcast doesn't show the Weather radar that WCSC broadcasts OTA on a subchannel. Obviously this is different than an additional channel with different programming like PBS does, but isn't this a choice that the cable company makes, not to rebroadcast the subchannel. As you said, it is up to the broadcaster to decide what to do with their bandwidth, but if the cable companies don't carry the subchannels then there wouldn't be the economic advantage of compromising the main digital channel, i.e. reducing resolution on the HD channel.

Don't get too excited about watching all that soccer in HD if you have Comcast. The opening match of the tournament, the opening match for the US National Team and roughly half the games overall will be broadcast on ESPN2 and you'll not only be seeing it in SD, but you'll be seeing it in non-digital not-so-crisp SD.

There are rumors floating around about a last minute deal like the NBC Universal for the Olympics deal, but nothing firm as yet.

There is no way that the CW could be carried as a HD channel, on a subchannel of another HD channel. They would both look terrible. My guess is that Media General is just carrying it as a SD digital channel, which will still compromise the quality of the NBC HD feed they will broadcast. You would think that NBC would not want their affilliates to do this to their HD signal. But who knows.

That is actually not true. ;) With the band width available, you can have one 1080i and one 720p High Def channel broadcasting with excellent results. I believe that you may even be able to get two 720p channels with on SD "slide" show (like weather map) up without a problem as well. SCETV currently broadcasts one HD and two SD channels without a problem. Taking the two SD and making one HD should not be that hard.

Here is a quote that may help explain...
"Digital television in the United States supports multiple digital subchannels if you divide the 19.4 Megabits-per-second (Mbps) bitstream. Full quality 1080i HDTV requires 18Mbps; however, many stations compress this down to 11Mbps. A 720p HDTV signal can be compressed to 8Mbps, and a SD signal compressed to 6Mbps without perceivable loss of quality. 4Mbps or less yields acceptable results if the subject in the video moves very little (such as a slideshow automated weather channel)."

Now, I do not really care if CW is HD.... I only watch Smallville on the WB anyway. It would be nice to see it in HD but otherwise, I don't really care.... for that matter, I do not watch NBC at all currently so again.... doesn't really matter. As the NFL goes on NBC, I am sure I will watch more.... especially since I am soon to have it in HD.

 Now, Diana.... curiosity is getting to me.... will NBCHD come up this week?

I would disagree, you can see artifacting all the time on the SCETV HD station, even when things are not moving fast on the screen. In the other programming forums other people report this in other markets as well for multicasting. So I could only imagine what would happen with two HD channels.

And your quote, discusses aspects of digital tv bandwidth, that, while possible, require significant compression of various extents all of which have potential for artifacting. I am sure that using a sub channel for an effectly static picture like the WCSC radar requires very little bandwidth, but anything else will be definitely noticable.

Hi all,

I asked this question a few weeks ago but didnt see a reply.

Is anyone having any issues with 5.1 surround on WCSC, when watching a national broadcast sound is fine, when they switch to commercial, my center speaker drops out, when they switch to local commercials, ie the gray sidebars appear then the sound is fine also, so national previews and commercials, i only get rear sound, all other HD channels are fine....just WCSC

Thanks, Paul

Having a wall mounted unit above the fireplace, I opted to not install my center front channel but to have it go through the two front speakers.... that being said, I have not heard any front speaker drop outs. If I understand your question, you loose the front and only have the rear during national previews and commercials. Can't say that I have heard of that problem before.

Doing the math, SCETV must be compressing quite a bit. I will have to ask master control what exactly they are pushing. OK. The thing is, I rarely get drop out and artifacts when I watch SCETV Digital programming. I do however get a LOT of that while watching CBS and ABC. I get a LOT of it on ABC lately. Of course, I watch those channels much more than PBS/ETV... don't tell the office! ;)

I do not know what format our local NBC channel is using. If they are using 720p, the could actually compress just a little and run both HD channels. This should not give any real degradation in picture quality. Anyway, I really doubt that the money to put the CW in HD will be spent. So, I guess we are wasting our brain cells debating it anyway.

It's not that you get artifacts on PBS it's what I believe is called "macroblocking" where you see all the square pixels. You see this during motion on other stations, but PBS HD you sometimes see during normal movement.

It's really frustrating that we spend all this money on HDTV while these networks just screw with us. Don't any of the higher ups in these companies own HDTVs and think there wrecking the picture (I know the answer is probably yes, but the dollar signs outway the sacrifice).

If you are getting dropouts and other problems with CBS and ABC it is not due to compression or effects like that, it is either at the source, (not uncommon for our local ABC) or your reception, but if you are using cable then that is not the problem. And what I described, is not dropouts but the "macroblocking".

I can tell you that NBC in general uses 1080i. So our local would just pass that along. As far as I know all locals just pass the source, and get compatible equipment, (ABC and FOX use 720p, NBC and CBS (and I think PBS) use 1080i).

I agree that it would probably not be worth the expense to run CW in HD, but any multicasting will degrade the picture of the HD signal from NBC, and I would guess would make football almost unwatchable.

There is a lot of discussion of this problem in the Programming forum, and most people would argue that anything less than 16 Mbps for HD is going to be noticable on all but the smallest HDTVs (i.e. <34 in) This would allow for only the smallest amount of bandwidth, 2-3 Mbps, allowed for another channel. Weather radar, okay, SD station, not really. I still remember a few years ago when WCSC had the Superbowl they even turned off the weather channel during the broadcast.

NBC HD update.

First, sorry I took good notes on the issue at work, but I forgot to post before I left work, so this may sound a little goofy.

In a nutshell - we got the receiver in on Tuesday and we have been working with the NBC engineer ever since to get it up and running. They are sending the feed in an unusual format and they couldn't send it as we get all the other broadcasters, so we are getting another piece of equipment in tomorrow that will translate the format they are sending into what we need. Hopefully we will have it up for you tomorrow.

I had Time Warner for years in Florence, SC, and was always happy with the service. For the three months I lived in Mt. That being said, I do think it's ridiculous that we don't get all the broadcast channels in HD. I'd be interested in knowing the real reason for the delay with NBC and FOX.

Im sure the real reason...and its no secret ..is the exchange of money...fees. I was living on Johns Island when i got my first taste of HD. But not until Comcast took over or bought U.S. Cable. Where im at now, in Sville, Comcast isnt available.

I agree about TWC mostly. I have had great service from them for a cable company. I am just a little upset with the Fox thing. For three years now I have been gong off on Sinclair/WTAT about HD service. TWC is the only one around not to have it. If they had it, I would be completely satisfied. Would be nice to have other HD channels but FoxHD is the big one I want. Maybe one day.

If knology was here... I would switch right away... if both were here and TWC had FoxHD... I would choose TWC. it all comes down to who will deliver what you want. Knology is not to far away from the house so, if it goes on much longer, I may have to find a way to get it. Of course, with FoxHD... TWC is the hands down choice!

I cannot speak for any other company than TWC, but our Digital Retrans Deals with Broadcasters are all the same on this point.... the broadcaster determines how they allocate the 'bandwidth' that is set up - they decide the subchannels they air.

Per my last post - airing subchannels is our choice from the perspective that it was worth it to us to give the broadcaster this level of choice in order to provide their HD signal to our cusotmer. If NBC puts CW on their subchannel 2.2, its their business.

I don't actually know their plan for CW.... just worried about the primary HD feed at this point.

Yea! NBC in HD. I just got home and found it. I am so excited!!! Now I will watch all of my old NBC shows reruns in HD... haven't watched them in a long time! Thanks Diana... now, go get them Sinclair jerks to put up FoxHD on TWC and I will sing your praises from my roof top... he he. Thanks again! :)

The Engineers had to put it below 550 to get it on the air and they are planning to move it above 550 in the near future. I don't mean to be rude, but please understand TWC doesn't provide service support for your set up, so I am not able to assist you further in this area. Has anyone heard about any new HD channels from Comcast coming soon? I have seen on other threads that Comcast is launching about 6 HD channels in the next month around the country. Can Charleston expect anything new? I don't think we have a Comcast rep here anymore so anyone one else with any scoops?

Yes, TWC will support any equipment they install in the home.

My personal opinion is the One Way Cable Card is much more trouble than its worth and the limitations outweigh the benefits. Given all the Enhanced TV elements included with a converter - not to mention the HD DVR - I really don't understand not taking advantage of that technology.

NBC HD is on the air! Channel 805

There is no guide information and it is absolutely and entirely my fault! I dropped the ball and I'm very sorry. It will be there on Tuesday. In the meantime, I know its a pain, but it will be the identical scheduel as the analog NBC listing.

SWEET!! Now I can finally take the gangly antenna off my roof!!! Esp since FOX HD comes in clear with a pair of bunny ears.

Thanks Diana for the update and info...probably wouldn't have discovered it for a while;) Your support has been great on this forum, and I would like to say thanks for all you do. Anyone else notice that 2.2 isn't radar anymore? ( At least not as of yesterday).
They are broadcasting the main feed on both channels instead of radar on 2.2. Maybe this is a prelude to the CW taking over on 2.2?

Have you noticed this picture on 2.2 at all. It is the digital simulcast of the analog station. It is 480i digital SD. If you watch it for more than a few seconds you will notice macroblocking and picture distortions. It is possible they are squeezing the signal into the same bandwidth for the 2.2 weather radar while they test. It certainly will be interesting to see what the picture for CW and NBC will look like when they are both up. My guess is that if they want to maintain their HD signal at a reasonable quality they will have to use the current bandwidth distribution between 2.1 and 2.2. so this may be a preview of what CW will look like.

I noticed the picture quality.
But with my crappy reception of NBC it was hard to tell the difference between the pixelization due to the signal coming and going and the macroblocking due to the low bandwidth used by 2.2!
I hope NBC doesn't think anyone would really watch a channel that looked THAT bad!

Dolemite,

I also mounted a trapdoor 100 inch screen; it was made by Stewart Filmscreen. It was in new construction so I framed in the box within a ceiling soffit to hold the screen enclosure (about 12"x12"xmaybe 115"). The unit weighed in at 285 pounds so it was quite a feat to get in place. Since the drywall had not been installed yet, I used a 2000# come-along to lift the screen to a height that I could place on two ladders while I inserted the four bolts that support the screen from a couple of homemade laminated wood beams on each end of the screen.

Tips:
1. Make sure to get the screen at the correct height so that the drywall can be finished and the unit will be flush with the ceiling if it is the trapdoor type.
2. Make sure that the screen is actually horizontal--use level! so that projected pix are level.
3. Make sure that the screen is exactly perpendicular to the projector location or else you may have problems getting a consistent focus across the screen.
4. Before you install, make sure that the screen will clear any obstacles below the screen; I had to have our cabinet maker take 2 inches off the depth of the base cabinet that is below/behind the lowered screen since I had no wiggle room in the placement of the screen itself.
5. Make sure that your projector lens will zoom to fill the screen from the distance that you intend to use if the projector is to be permanently mounted, like ceiling mounted PJ.
6. If you use wall switches to raise/lower trapdoor and screen and mask if you have one, make sure that you can fish wires to the switches to the controllers.
7. If you have electronic controllers for the trapdoor, screen, masking, do not put them in the attic but rather in a conditioned space--I mounted mine in a my clothing closet on the second floor so that they would not be subjected to the high temps in attics in the south. Typically, their operating ratings will not include temps reached in attics in summer in SC.
8. You may want to cover the screen enclosure with same level of thermal insulation that is recommended for your attic to help protect the screen and movements from the thermal extremes as much as you can. Not only will this help protect the unit's parts, but will also limit thermal expansion and contraction that over time could cause separation from the drywall...
9. Be sure that your ceiling joists are able to support the weight of the screen in addition to doing their regular job; you may need to reinforce or spread the load of the screen over several members to make sure that your ceiling doesn't sag over time, etc. Or, you may need to suspend the screen from a separate support structure built above the ceiling joists to ensure adequate support.
10. If you use some sort of beams on each side to support the screen, then use bolts for support rather than chains/hooks, etc so that you will have unlimited ability to level the unit along all axes.

That's all I can think of now. Sorry to be so long-winded. Sorry that I haven't visited the forum in a while and am just catching up; hopefully, these tips will still be useful.

dolemite77
06-06-06, 11:38 AM
Dan,

Big help! Thanks for all the tips. I will keep these close by for when i finally get up in the attic to mount it. So by trapdoor, you are referring to an actual door that closes the gap that the screen comes out of? That's pretty cool, but I was thinking I would just cut a slit out of the ceiling that would allow the screen to drop out of the ceiling, and dress the cutout with some trim of course. I wonder if that would look ok? I also planned on mounting the screen housing to one of the crossbeams in the attic, and building an insulated box around it all, with a hinged door to access the screen when needed. This would hopefully allow air to get up to the screen, keeping it somewhat cooler than the attic.
Does that sounds feasible?

Also, my screen doesn't have a trigger input, does yours? Is there a way to make my screen roll down when i turn the projector on, and roll up when i turn it off? That would be awesome!

Dan@SI
06-06-06, 11:57 PM
Dolemite,

I'm glad I could contribute a little.

If you want to get details on my screen type, try this URL: http://www.stewartfilmscreen.com/engineering_specifications/stealth.html

As far as cutting a slit...if cutting/trimming is done in a precision way, it will probably look OK. HOWEVER, I'm assuming that your ceiling is drywall and if so, it's nearly impossible to make precision cuts in drywall (at least for me anyway); you might want to get a scrap piece of drywall out of a construction dumpster and experiment before you try it for real. You should be able to find a commercial product to exactly meet your needs as they are used in conference rooms in many buildings.

If done well, the thermal enclosure should do OK.

My screen is made to accept a 12VDC trigger from the projector but it requires an optional gadget that costs about $300 for my screen. I devised a cheaper ($60) solution by using X10 Universal Module Momentary Switches. I use three of these in parallel with the low voltage wall switches that activate electronic controllers that control my trapdoor motor and screen motor to open/close the door and raise/lower the screen remotely. I send X10 commands from my Harmony 890 remote to activate the X10 modules which in turn activate the electronic controllers which in turn activate the relays that activate the motors. You could use an inexpensive X10 remote if your universal remote doesn't do X10. If you're interested in X10, just Google it to learn how it works, to learn about the various devices, and to buy. Just BE SURE that anything you insert into ANY electrical circuit is capable of handling the voltage and current demands that it will face.

I also use x10 products to apply/remove power to my ceiling mounted projector and to 'fade to off' and 'fade to on' all the table lamps in the room where I use the projector/screen.

Comcast ESPN2 HD launch Charleston

I am pleased to make a couple of announcements to regarding Comcast high definition video service in Charleston. We have permanently launched ESPN2HD effective earlier today. The channel is 203. On a side note my Gamecocks played on ESPN2HD 2 twice for football last year. With this channel we have a total of 16 HD channels in Charleston.

As for the Comcast future..

If and when we add more High Definition Channels in Charleston we are usually asked not to say anything ahead of corporate announcements. I would be hesitant to comment on which channels get added next particularly because those negotiations happen above the system level. Products like High Definition TV are a big part of our future video plans.

I would also like to take a moment to introduce the new Comcast point of Contact for this forum. He is our new product manager. His information is:

I assume you are talking about TW corporate and not locally because Diana has been an invaluable member of this forum as well as the Columbia one. The communication between the customers and local TW through her is the model that everyone else should try.

Thanks to Andrews for the post and for replying to my email inquiries as well.

Question to all, my mother is moving down to Wescott Plantation (The Courtyards) in July. Anyone know who is the cable provider up there. I called Knology but the person I talked to wasn't sure and the address didn't come up. No exactly high end knowledge. I assume that it is TWC but I couldn't find out. Voila.

Tried calling the newsroom tonight to get WCIV to put the game up in HD...a girl at the newsroom answered and said "OK" when I asked the same question as above...but seems to not have worked this time

Great work Comcast-CHS ... thanks for letting us watch a true to its word 'World Cup' event in HD !! You guys rock !

Oh ... by the way .. I have recently noticed that the On-Demand stuff is not as clean looking as it used to be. I recall watching on-demand versions of the analog channels like A&E and Travel ... and it used to look very good on my 96-inch setup. Last night I played around with a few on-demand shows like A&E and NG ... and they looked really bad. In fact, NG-OD looked quite worse than regular NG. Now ... if Comcast had NG-HD ... Is anyone noticing this problem. I have noticed these issues over at least the last few weeks but maybe longer.

First, every time a scheduled recording begins, the cable box switches to that station. There is only one recording occuring and I can switch it off of the channel and it still records, but this never use to happen. Why is this a problem?, because if you are watching something that you may have paused and is behind the actual time (i.e. running on the buffer) and the station switches, the buffer is cleared so you miss the part between the live action and where you were. This happened to me the other night during the baseball game.

Second, if you start a recording in the middle of show you have been watching, it use to record from when you started watching, i.e. using the buffer, and then until it ends. Now it starts from the actual time, and you lose anything in the buffer. These issues appear related, a buffer utilization screwup.

So does anyone else notice these issues, since it starting appearing a few weeks/ months ago, a was assuming it was a software/firmware upgrade and it screwed up the buffer settings. It was about this time that I seemed to have lost a lot of saved Sopranos eps, and they were saved until delete.

Sorry for the length, but it just can't be me.

our 8300HD box reboots on its own every so often. Today was the worst -- it has rebooted four time since 12:30 and every time it reboots it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete the cycle so we can watch TV again. We have had this problem -- not this bad -- off and on for about a year and replaced several boxes. Anyone else have this or solved it?

I do, but not during World Cup...got it the other night during the basketball game (and right now watching Extreme Makeover Home); also get occasional pixelation. Diana, do you know if this is a TWC problem or is it coming from the source?

Also, has anyone had problems with the FOX OTA signal? I get a good strong signal with a set top antenna (between 3/4 to full bar)...but every so often the signal drops out for a second and then comes back. I was thinking it was interference when the wind picks up (trees moving), but with such a strong signal I am surprised...and after watching it for a bit, I don't see a correlation. The signal used to never have any drop outs (right after they went full power).

I'm confused which 'problem' - drop outs or pixelation - drop outs in all likelyhood from the source - pixelation probably issue with cable / signal strength in or around your home - I can't really make the call from your description.

Hmm...they seem related (pixelation and sound dropouts), but could be wrong. I wasn't thinking it was my setup because ABC is the only station that does it (all other cable channels are great)...when I had problems before with digital cable, more than one channel was affected. When the sound drops out, a few blocks will show on the screen (but not always). I suppose I can call the local TWC office to get a technician, but it really doesn't seem to be a problem here (esp since I am not the only one who noticed...I know, two doesn't make a trend).

I wish I still had my roof antenna up...I could see if the OTA signal was doing the same; anyone out there get ABC OTA (and notice drop outs)?

My dropouts are also tied to pixelization problems, which occur at times. Seems the video can "hang in" better than the audio for some reason. I noticed the problem with ABC (815) and Discovery (845), but the 900 channels seem to be OK. Strikes me as being a signal strength or bandwidth problem and it's been going on for a couple of days.

OK - I guess I got somewhat confused as to the problem.

So, I'll have the Service in Summerville monitor ABC HD for Drop outs and Pixelation and have the Headend do some diags on the QAM

AND Discovery too

Any other station or primarily ABC, with one mention of Discovery?

I only watched ABC and a bit of Discovery over the weekend, so those are all I comment on right now (as I write this at my office). Thanks for the reply.

Diana,

I have been noticing a lot of "hang up" issues with ABC as well. What we are seeing Diana is some pixelizing or blocking in a line and the audio will give a frag sound for about a second or so. I noticed it a bunch last night during the game. I also do not see it on the 900 channels. It is mostly ABC but from time to time it will happen on Discover. I do not recall seeing it on other channels right now.

I have had other issues with NBC. They seem to have a lot of problems with their audio but it is obviously the station when it happens.

I hope that helps.

I am back...

I have been living under a BUDGET rock for the last 14 straight days. It should not be as intense anymore allowing me to respond in a timely fashion.

I do apologize for the delay.

I am working on the two questions regarding the 8300 HD/DVR boxes. As for the MHD and all digital simulcast. I have not received any direction on Comcast adding MHD to the local lineup. We are working towards an all digital lineup. However, this is going to be along term plan.

As soon as I get some answers on the 8300s I will let you know.

Take Care

Chris

PS. Anyone watch the NHL game 7 in HD? If you are a hockey fan it is the only way to watch a game on TV.

Is there any package on Comcast that allows you to get Fox Soccer Channel or Gol Network?

I've heard there are now 16 HD channels on Comcast on this board. Can anyone reply with what they are?

Thanks,

Well, the 26th is here....and no HD Channel 2. Does anyone know if there was some sort of technical delay or part lost in snail mail? Or are they waiting until primetime to start it up?

As of around 10:00 am, channel 2-1 is up and looking good but no DD on the sound. That hopefully will change when some primetime HD is on. I'm getting 100% signal strength in Goose Creek with a RCA indoor amplified UHF antenna.

WCBD Coming in just fine here in my part of GC.

But I have a question...is it just me, or is WCIV still a little weak? Or is it maybe the source signal that might be weird? Saturday, I had my tivo (HR10-250) record the World Cup games on ABC. Neither one of the games ending up being a full recording because of signal drops. It was relatively nice weather on Saturday. Then Sunday, while the weather was less wonderful, the games came in fine. Sunday yeilded a total of maybe 2 seconds of dropout/image freeze.

Initiate a new channel search and it should find it. Worked for me (OTA) :) . Sig of 94 in Pimlico.

WCIV sig strength of 94 also but drop outs or sound loss is a regular thing with them lately. IMO they have equipment problems or need to learn how to operate it.

Comcast will once again carry the Braves in HD starting immediately. The games will located on Channel 200.

Is there a schedule for this anywhere? I thought if the games were on Turner South then they were also on the HD channel, but that wasn't the case last night. Even though the Guide said it was on. So with the Braves/Yankees on in HD on ESPN2 and supposedly on some Atlanta station, we could only see it in terrible analog TS on Comcast, and boy does that picture look bad. Almost as bad as FSN last week for the Red Sox / Braves.

Anyone else have some dropouts yesterday on WCBD ( haven't watched today yet). The signal was strong and steady but there were some occasional dropouts on my HD Tivo. Hopefully it's just them tuning the signal some

I had many dropouts on ABC OTA on Saturday also during the England-Ecuador game. It got so bad that I switched to Univision and watched it in Spanish.

I think i have a preamp that is going bad, or it is miss mounted I check locally, to see about getting a new one looks, like my best bet is to order one over the net. My dad didn't have that much twin lead so he mounted the amp on the bottom arm of the UHF part of the antenna. We have replaced the antenna a year or so ago, but we kept the same preamp, I did notice that the signal wasn't as good, and at times we get weird results with the antenna like picking some channels up better on the side of the antenna than pointed straight at it. I am think about getting a Winegard AP 8275 or either a Channel Master CM 7777. Which do you guys recommend?

Cm 7777 has best noise figure, twin lead is bad news use RG -6

I think it is just home games on Turner South that would be on Braves HD.

YES - I'm seeing frequent glitches (horizontal distortion in the top third of the picture) on the analog and dropouts on the HD; I've tried it on both OTA and Knology. It was mostly audio dropouts last night during Windfall, HD via Knology.

Wondering if anyone contacted WCBD about not showing the Women's US Open Golf in HD. The 4:3 shots aren't bad from the HD cameras, but always nice not to have the bars down the side.

If no one has contacted them, is the number previously posted still good to get a hold of them. Had good luck in contacting ABC once before.

You can try and contact their chief engineer, Sam Barclay...he is good about returning e-mail...heck, he even sent me a note when they went full power on the tower (I had inquired almost a year ago).

I went to watch my recording of the Capital 4th last night when I got home and had that problem. I doubt it was Comcast that was to blame, since I had this issue OTA. I thought maybe the "junk" in the air after all the fireworks somehow interfered with the signal, but I was unable to get all three PBS signals last night.

Was really looking forward to seeing some HD fireworks... :(

I had no problems while watching it on TWC. I am not aware of any issues with the transmitter but I will ask the tech.

Quick question - has anyone here been watching Rock Star: Supernova ? I'm watching it on CBSHD, and I'm not sure what's up - it's coming through in 4:3, but it looks pretty good (better than normal SDTV). Could it be HD just not widescreen ?

If it matters I'm using an SA8300HD with TWC. All other HD programming is coming through normal. Are they really not showing Rock Star in HD ? Doesn't make sense to me...

Most Churches or School Districts would probably love to take it. You can also check with the Kidney foundation and the Salvation Army. Good Luck!
