View Full Version : X1 DIY Mount
Rob-
Just offering my services for free if you want a .pdf that has photos and text of all your mounts along with prices etc. I'm an ex-graphic designer and would love to help ya out. Might be nice to have a .pdf or a website that showed all our mounts etc so one doesn't have to pick through the thread
dewdrop 09-25-03, 10:32 AM Rob,
Got a question: I can't seemed to be able to tighten the joint with the screw you provided. Did I use it correctly?
See the pic.

Samurai Jack 09-25-03, 11:49 AM Hey Rob,
Sorry, I'm a latecomer to the thread (but I did read it all). I'm wondering if you'd be willing to supply both the short-ceiling rod and the standard rod for an X1 mount?
My ceiling isn't finished yet, and I'm not yet 100% sure which I'll need or how I'll be mounting, but I want to get the thing off the wobbly plastic storage bin I have it on in the meantime.
Thanks.
By the way, I don't think a black powder coat would be bad at all. The color match was kind of a cool idea, but black is more universal, and more easily hidden. As beautiful as your mount is, I really don't want to look at it much.
Ron Yost 09-25-03, 12:18 PM Nothing amazing about China. Their immense work force is paid nearly nothing for their labor.
But, it's not going to last forever, and the world's running out of slaves who'll make all our junk for nothing.

mandarax 09-25-03, 03:23 PM Dew Drop...
You only have the Stainless steel bolt tightened to the Stainless Steel nut to the nylon insert. The nylon insert in the thread is to avoid slippage. When you first tighten it ... it has to get through the nylon.... Hold the adjustable wrench and tighten it with the supplied allen wrench... Its called a nyloc nut... keeps it tight.
Jack... lol.. what do you mean you don't want to look at it much?... I understand this as you just want to be sure it is rock solid and only see the projector... Not some gawdy looking device ... You will note on the one pic from Italy that you do not even see the mount once up. You read the whole thread.. Wow.. The standard mount comes with the 8" and 2.5" knee joint... This config can be used for both wall and ceiling mount. If you want a spare 2.5",, thats no problem... I even have some spare wall plates made up for people that wanted to move the projector from room to room. As far as the black goes... its an option that may become necessary in order to keep logistics simple and keep cost down. Especially for the necessity to swap out at a later date and keep everything the same. From a technical point of view I was looking for the color that had no reflectivity in case there was some light spill from the projector.
mmsean... thanks for the generous offer... I am in a bit of a quandary over a website... I actually learned how to do the site on my own and I am in the midst of finalizing which products to endorse. Maybe I can show you the pages and have you critique them... I don't always have time to get the latest techniques and keeping the size down to a minimum so it doesnt take forever to load is something I could use help with. My logo eats up alot of memory. Thanks again.
KBK... Ken... I read your note... I must be working way too much ... Who is Dwayne? Which mount are you referring too? I'm confused.
Ron ... I am not sure that I would agree that everything out of China is junk... Their economy is better off making some of the items we use... look at all the happy X1 owners that wouldnt be in the market otherwise. What to do when competitors choose that route? But the debate on the economy and workforce of China goes beyond the scope of this thread so I disengage. I luckily live in an area of the world where I can get just about anything done in a day. Probably the best place on this planet for doing business.
Heh... I just packaged up a mount for a military address in the middle east... the troops must be watching satelite and dvd's on their X1's
Robert
Samurai Jack 09-25-03, 05:09 PM Hehe, thanks for the reply Rob. Yeah, that's what I was looking for...an extra 2.5" joint so I could do a short, straight drop from the ceiling if I have to (no idea yet what I'm gonna have to do in the end).
And don't be too offended ;) if I could make the X1 invisible as well, I certainly would. And silent too, while I'm dreaming. I'm definitely going for a clean, minimalist final look for the HT room. Don't want to see speakers and PJs and amps and subs and wires...
My immersion is disrupted during things like, say, turning your head when you hear that bullet whiz by or those steps approaching, only to visually pinpoint the source ("oh, it's comming from that speaker right there").
Anyway, cool...I'll likely order one up very soon.
mandarax 09-25-03, 10:03 PM Great goooglieee woooglieee.
This post has reached another milestone... over 500 posters... and over 40000 views.... I think it may surpass my Canuck Shootout post.
Jack.. I think the style of this design is what makes it so popular. It doesnt look like some big pipe, or hunk of wood, or some other designs that take over the room.... 5/8 solid steel... the psi load rating to actual duty it is performing is hysterical... yet I found if I made it smaller diameter it wouldn't look as good. If I use some kinda pipe... it looks like drainage pipe coming out of a wall... I don't like the way universal mounts look or work... and if I put them on a cosmos stress software, hands down my designs would surpass every projector mount out there. Having the plate cut and shaped to the projector does look the best and work the best ... of course ... I admit I am a bit biased. On the spring loaded design.. compared this spring requires a hydraulic press to place it. The others I have seen that use a spring use a thin spring that I can compress with my baby finger. Yet my 10 yr old can adjust the projector when assembled.
Wait till you see some of the hydraulic lifts I want to make... The garbage that is out there now is incredulous. Not sure if an X1 user would spend more on the lift than the projector tho...
dewdrop 09-26-03, 01:47 PM Hi Mandarax,
Oops, sorry, forgive me ignorance. I will try it again...
Ed :D
mandarax 09-26-03, 03:36 PM dewdrop...
No problemo... Certainly no need to apologize.. It may help someone else.
Here is the most common error... shimming... Even when ceiling mounting the knee joint can be aligned ... say not on a 90 degree angle to the projector. Some have ceilings that are not perfectly flat. lets say it is... if you align the knee joint on say a 45 degree angle you can make the adjustment without shimming.

AnakinOU 09-29-03, 05:06 PM Mandarax: Do you still have mounts available? If so, please let me know ASAP.
Thanks!
mandarax 10-01-03, 09:05 AM Wow ... my PM box was filled twice... use this email for inquiries as it is much easier to respond.
robert@digital-visions.ca
I will be making these up until the demand drops for them.
robert
AnakinOU 10-01-03, 09:26 AM yeah...I figured as much...sent you email too.... :)

Sent you a PM and an email, and have yet to hear back from either. I'm interested in an X1 ceiling mount, probably longer than normal.
mandarax 10-03-03, 01:07 PM Blanco...
I dont see a pm from you... maybe it was sent while full...
I also do not have a record of an email...
Are you sure you sent it to the proper address..
Anyway... with respect to specials... best to use the above mentioned email address.
There has been a rash of X1 buyers or what? From what I hear Dell has decided to lose a pile of money again this quarter...

I can understand about your pm box being full, but I sent you an email as well to the email link listed in the above post. I'll try sending one again soon.
mandarax 10-05-03, 02:56 PM OK Blanco...
If anyone is local and needs a sheet of Parklands let me know...
5*10
rrobertson 10-05-03, 09:30 PM I want to build a screen and just starting to research. Anyone have a Parklands and Goo setup they would like to share info about or point me in the right direction?
Appreciate any help...
Randy :D
mandarax 10-07-03, 09:29 PM frogster...
Check tracking number sent... Order was placed on Thursday afternoon, shipped on Friday morning, email sent Friday morning advising tracking number. IN OHIO Today which is the destination. Me no capeche...
It does not get any better than this.
Robert
mandarax 10-07-03, 09:37 PM Randy...
Here is a pic of the screen I made up for the Canuck Shootout.
5*10 sheet of Parklands.
Goo Digital Grey Lite.
You will note from the pic taken with a flash which is evident by the light reflection off those tiny speakers. I guess its more of what you do not see. a reflection of the flash bulb ...
you just see a uniform brightness across the screen.
This thread is long enough without getting into screens ... but if you want some assistance with it ,,, or questions just email me ...
robert@digital-visions.ca

frogster 10-07-03, 09:41 PM nothing to capeche. it's simple. i didn't get the email friday with all of the information so i had no idea whether you had shipped it or if you had even received payment. it was probably my bad.
thanks for being so prompt! I can't wait to get it installed and hooked up.
mandarax 10-07-03, 10:19 PM frogster...
no problemo ..... just explaining so people do not get the idea that there is some "limbo time" in this transaction. Payment is taken as an action compelling event. Allan has allowed this to happen from AVS... and I take it extremely serious, and try to keep it professional.
Mounts is just a portion of what I do. To date it is more of a complimentary service. If I wanted to make money I would punch out stampings(like producers of other mounts) instead of using cnc lasercutters, and cnc milling machines, and powder coating finishing to make these.... I guess I wouldnt keep using stainless steel hardware either, or throw in allen wrenches so customers don't have to hunt for the right size...
I do not always come to the forum... I try and stay in touch with this thread with any updates or info on the mount... email again is the best vehicle to use for making inquiries etc... robert@digital-visions.ca
I appreciate the post... I think the email was sent requesting info at 6 something pm this date and you received another email with tracking number after 8:00 PM.. again no problem and definitely the way to go.
Robert
BankyEdwards 10-08-03, 11:24 AM Mandarax,
Great job on the mount design, got mine home yesterday and unpacked it. A very functional piece and I am anxiously awaiting my X1 projector due to arrive today :)
Keep up the great work!
AnakinOU 10-08-03, 02:38 PM A quick question, before my mount and projector arrive...
What's the distance from the center of the lens to the top hole on the mount (assuming wall mount)?
frogster 10-08-03, 04:06 PM It looks like mine was delivered. I can't wait to get the projector off of the table and up on the ceiling.
The ceiling I'm installing this on is a drywall ceiling. Currently, there is just a little hole where the video cables are sticking out. I'm planning on widening the hole into a moderate size square, putting molding on the edges of the opening, and placing a ceiling tile in the square after the mount is installed.
mandarax 10-09-03, 01:00 AM Banky...Glad to see you went from a future X1 owner to a X1 owner. Now you will have all those women wanting to come over. Its gonna be rough... at least with the projector mounted you won't mess up the X1 if things get out of hand. Congrats.
AnakinOU.. This is a good question... I guess the question relates to how far over should you adjust the alignment from center since the lens is not in the center of the projector. In the installations I did I believe I measured 2 5/8 inches from center of the projector to the center of the lens... Therefore you are allowing this distance on your alignment to center of screen. Since the projector is inverted... it will be skewed this distance on the left facing the projector lens... or right facing the screen. This adjustment is critical for ceiling or wall mounting... Many people will measure to center of the projector and be off this distance as the lens is not in the middle... I think this is the meat of the question.... If the basis for the question does not relate to this please advise.
Frogster... take a pic so we can see it when you are finished.
Thomas F 10-09-03, 04:52 AM I recall reading somewhere that the offset was exactly 2.56" from the projector centerline.
AnakinOU 10-09-03, 09:19 AM I meant vertically (i.e. the straight up-and-down distance from the top of the mount to the middle of the lens)...just trying to get everything arranged before my pj arrives. :)
frogster 10-09-03, 09:51 AM I didn't get it mounted last night. I just got home too late.
I am so impressed by the quality and packing of the materials. It's almost a shame that the projector hides it. There are absolutely no rough edges.
As far as lining up the projector, I plan on picking an estimated spot and then having someone else hold the projector in that spot to make sure I get the desired projected image.
mandarax 10-09-03, 11:19 AM Thanks Thomas...
Phew... I am glad I wasnt off by much.. as I was too tired to actually measure it last night. Surprised after about 50,000 views this only came up now on this thread... But a very excellent question.
AnakinOU ... I just gave you credit for one of the best questions on this thread and you tell me that you meant something completely different.
By the top of the mount ... in a wall mount configuration ...well I should get some clarification as to what you mean by the top... The plate that threads into the projector is flush with the projector bottom... if you mean the top of the horizontal cnc machined 8" knee joint to the bottom of the cnc laser cut projector plate... then the answer is about 2.5 inches... or about 1 7/8 from the bottom of the horizontal cnc machined knee joint. There is some variation as I recommend at least 4 complete revolutions on the thread. Then you just lock it into position with the additional lock nut.
Frogster.... You do not get rough edges when you cnc laser cut . It costs more to do this but it eliminates burr on the metal as is common when you stamp metal. I know what you mean about the finish... the powder coating looks alot better than a regular spray system used on other products. It gets baked in the ovens @ 400 degrees.... goes through three bath systems .... and the firm that powder coats these takes great pride in their workmanship.... which I guess is why honda and hummer elects to use them for their work. It is in the long run better though to have a design that meshes with the projector and looks like a homogenous part of the whole unit and therefore does not look like a hunk of plumbing fixtures.. wooden substructure... If you want funky ... you should see some of the coatings that are possible... But I prefer to have the mount as understated as possible...built with overkill to the max... easy to install... and now swappable for other product offerings.
AnakinOU 10-09-03, 11:29 AM aaah, but your understanding of the question has been answered elsewhere (TechNut's X1 FAQ), whereas mine was not. :)
mandarax 10-11-03, 08:42 AM Technut did a fantastic job on this and should get a standing ovation for all the work he did on this.
mandarax 10-12-03, 07:39 AM Thanks for all the orders... will be on run 7 within a week.

Well Mandarax was right - the women just can't seem to keep away from my place and the X1;) & I have thought about charging admission.
All holds true to women and the multi-functional X1/mount. They love it!!
Rewind to last night...it was a friend who lives in the building - we rented Ghost Ship and Monsters Inc. She absolutely loved the PJ and the mount - so much that her dad who is currently looking at a RPTV may opt for an X1 instead.....I expect to seem him over next week to have a boo at my setup.
As for her - I doubt she'll want to head just down the street to the theatres anytime soon. She started talking marriage to me after seeing the X1/mount but I was able to shift her attention to the 16:9 screen and avert certain catastrophe! This all thanks to some handy remote work, beers, munchies, and some big arse images.
I was looking at going with Goo but came across the 'Mist Evening' thread in the DYI Screen Forum. It's amazing...the PQ is truly amazing!!
PM me for the color scheme on the paint.
I am honestly thinking of naming my Theatre 'The Hooterville Grand' in recognition of Mandarax' great work :D
mandarax 10-13-03, 07:59 AM Hey Banky....
Oh but to be single and skin hawking again... and with the high tech tools to flock them in there is unlimited potential.
Just a reminder... I have a 50HD for viewing this week. If anyone local or fairly local wants to see it in action let me know. By email please.
Also if anyone wants to see the Z1 and X1 side by side let me know.
robert@digital-visions.ca
I am going make a Z1 version of this mount ....
Robert..
mandarax 10-15-03, 07:42 PM The 50HD looks sweet. The scaler on this unit is phenominal...
I only have two NEC plates left...
The X1 plates are going out 2 fast and 2 furious.
Is everyone buying an X1 before Xmas.
mandarax 10-16-03, 09:40 AM For Canadian orders a number of people have just been emailing a transfer. It seems to work as good as or better than Paypal. There is no charge for doing this and Paypal doesnt get my money...
Does anyone know if this type of service is available in the USA. I hate giving up more margin to Paypal for doing nothing, and I have a US bank account in the USA.
Would be appreciative if anyone knows.
Robert

mandarax 10-17-03, 11:49 AM I am thinking that it may work with or without the name.
Women love this mount design. Havent been able to put my finger on it.
The 3rd one out to Finland just left.
Robert
mandarax 10-18-03, 11:03 AM Should have posted this earlier but that parklands piece has a new home.
Thanks again for all the orders. I cannot describe how much fun it is to be connected to so many people from all over the world that are just getting into this hobby. The fun is exponential to most any "job" I have done... even the remedial logistics is not that bad. There has not been one complaint, or return... The community here is beyond compare... Any item, and I mean down to the last splinter of information can be found or attained here. People offering assistance... I cannot describe in words a thankyou that would sufficiently do justice to how I feel about this.
All the cnc equipment subs have been great,
the powder coating business has been exceptional,
even Fedex has only faltered on 2 out of over 700.... (I guess that is why Morpheus made fedex his choice when he initially delivered Neo the phone in the Matrix)
US customs has not stopped one shipment for even a day and have been incredulously generous with there time and considerations working through with me exactly to a positioning of the actual paperwork in the clear sleeve,, and given these times I am amazed that not one has been held.
I am constantly looking for better modifications and new designs, and processes.... Hopefully the exchange will not keep wacking me in the wallet. About a 50% drop since the original offering.
Robert

That's because it's an A++ mount! I finally got around to mount my X1 this weekend and for the price, your mount has no competition for price and quality. Not to mention shipping speed. :D Thank you, mandarax. :)
And I completely agree about the community here and the load of information shared. I saved tons of money because of this community by learning how to do many things by myself from DYI cables, DYI screens, etc. And then your fabulous mount is what was missing. :)
Rich_SC 10-18-03, 01:57 PM just finished installing mine...looks and works perfectly. Thanks.

mandarax 10-19-03, 06:05 AM Thanks guys... I just wish it wasnt so labor intensive as it sucks alot of my other development time.... but it keeps me out of trouble.
I am working on screens, a htpc case, improvements to all three of my mount designs, a hydraulic ball screw ceiling mount,
Dont forget that if you need the cable adaptors for the projector ..... I got em.
AnakinOU 10-20-03, 09:58 AM GOt my X1 on Thursday...good lord that thing is amazing.
Oh yeah, the mount rocks, too. :)
OK, so I got it all hooked up, high-wall mounted (apartment...ceiling is pretty much impossible). The only problem I'm running into is the distance between the pj and wall...the jus isn't enough room for my adapters/cables back there. Is there any way I could get either an extension (3" or so would be about right) or a new "arm" piece?
Put in my order yesterday :)
Cant wait to get my mount...
mcq3000 10-21-03, 07:03 PM I ordered this mount and it is beatifully designed, I cannot even conceive a better design for a mount. However mounting it seems to be a b*tch.
I think You will remember me Mandarax as the guy who said he had dry wall in my basement. Well, I cannot fix the screws into the wall no matter what I do. It just keeps ripping the dry wall and coming of. And I just realized my whole town house is all dry wall that is like 6/8 of an inch thick. Now you said something about studs when you e-mailed me, well I have no clue what those are so I was wondering if you or anyone had any tips on this as it is really fustrating, the dry wall is so thin that any size screw just rips holes in it. I would like to mount it close to my basement ceiling inverted as it is the perfect distance and fill up my 60"X80" perfectly at that exact height and distance. Plus I can route the cables through my drop ceiling.

Don't mount it on only the drywall. By now, you already know that it can't hold any weight. The joist (or studs) are the beams holding the floor above you. It's solid wood. I used a stud finder that I bought at Home Depot to locate them and screw my mount directly on them. Using that same stud finder, I was able to make a patch to run my cables behind the drywall and used a fishtape to do it.
mystery 10-21-03, 07:46 PM There are drywall anchors which you can purchase which will do the trick nicely for you. They come in different sizes depending on the size screw and the strength that you need. I would take one of the screws which came with Mandarax's mount and go to a hardware store to match up an anchor to it. These anchors are great at securing items to drywall. Screw in the anchor to the wall by just using the screwdriver. Bury the anchor until the lip is flush with the wall, then attach the mount base to the anchor using one of the provided screws.
The anchor expands inside the wall as you tighten the screw into it and results in a snug fit against the inside of the wall.
The stud is simply one of the 2 x 4s holding up the wall on the other side. If you can screw into at least one of these wooden studs, you'll have a more secure mount. However, if you must use anchors for both screws, you should be alright. Just make sure you snugly put them in the wall and tighten the screws into them securely. Look for anchors which are rated at the appropriate weight for holding up your projector and mount.
I was able to use one stud and one drywall anchor and it would take one mighty earthquake to move that sucker now.
Don't attach anything to the base of the mount until you've secured it to the wall. Then you screw in the arm and the other parts of the assembly.
rrobertson 10-21-03, 08:40 PM I received my X1, mount, parklands plastic, screen goo etc...all from Mandarax last week. Kudos to Mandarax for providing good affordable service to the masses....keep up the good work.
mcq3000 10-21-03, 10:43 PM whoa, great tips, I just realized my local radioshack has a stud finder and home depot sells the stud finder, I will be getting those tommorrow and see which works better, I will post back with my results, thanks for the help so far guys!
mandarax 10-23-03, 02:05 AM Sorry guys ... I have been extremely busy... and my car.. she almost go boom on a very fast ride home..... got order in for the Z1..HD1 ..Cad drawings are finito finally... what a wacky setup that one is. But it will be slik complete with vent holes. I was going to put a 1 on it but given the Z2 is about to come out that may be foolish... What do you guys think of having my logo cut into the plate and paying for it? lol..
Making a new fixture for welding ... With the continued strengthening of our dollar I am doing everything humanly possible to keep the pricing the same. Can you believe a drop in the US dollar of almost 25 percent since the start of this??
AnikinOU... but of course we can do anything ... per email no sweat..
HOOGS sheeza comin to you ...
MCQ3000 .. the air stud was in the hardware packet.
Seriously.. guys... you know in that hardware package ...... there is toggle bolts supplied AND ALSO screws... What is the strongest support when not hitting a stud.... TOGGLE BOLTS. They are supplied with the hardware... Drill the holes for the toggle bolts... then its a squeeze ..poke it threw the hole.. and release ... tighten... finito.. Of course I only can recommend that you only use studs or joists. But if you must disregard my recommendation the toggle bolts are in the hardware packet... Even the bit is in the packet and the allen wrench so you do not have to search for one.... Those toggle bolts are not cheap... and extraordinarily stronger than ANY anchor you will find. The Toggle Bolts are the ones with the springs on them...
Mystery... Heh.. good to see your still checking in on me .
RRobertson... Thanks... It was fun having the box manufacturer come and make me one box and deliver it to my door to house the parklands sheet. Glad it all arrived in one piece. Thats the last of my parklands... not getting any more.
It was too difficult getting Parklands shipped over the border ...etc.. so now its Sintra board ... Unfortunately it does not roll into a box... but there is some good solutions depending on where you live.
Heh ... you know what.. some of you that seen that gigantic TV in a early pic in this thread ..it weighs in at a mere 1000 lbs ... I think sheeza sold... 9in Hitachi CRT Guns.
My daughter cried when I told her someone was coming over to buy it. If I could have put it in a closet or drawer I would have buckled with the pressure of tears and kept it.
Sorry again for being away ... and for writing these replies so early in the morning.
Robert
Mandarax,
I sent you an email. If you still have X1 mounts to sell, I'd be interested in purchasing one.
mandarax 10-23-03, 08:49 PM There is only about 30 left from run 7...
Seems like all i do now is package and ship these..

the 83.00 price to the USA includes shipping via fedex it is the landed price, no duty, taxes and also includes all the hardware.
Please remember to put your phone number on the order information as fedex needs this..
I just closed the deal on the 80" proscan RPTV... a mere 1000 lbs leaving tomorrow weather permitting.
Anyone know a good ISF certified tech in the kitchener area ... let me know.
Robert
stonecreek 10-24-03, 11:34 AM I got a mount on Ebay from mikeyt999. Cost a little over $60 including shipping. A very High quality mount for cheap. Nice flat black paint job.
FYI
mandarax 10-24-03, 08:02 PM I could make the same components out of plastic plates... no powder coating finish.. no machining... no cnc laser cutting... no stainless steel hardware... no wall mounting option... small diameter hardware... and stamp out a unit that was generic.... and go on ebay.. hmmm.. nah not my style.
mandarax 10-24-03, 08:03 PM Gruson... I have your email... and it is in the works..
mandarax 10-24-03, 08:10 PM AnikinOU...
I have your extention in my hand right now... Will go out on Monday...
Note that the standard distance for the wall mount from the wall is 2 inches of clearance .... It was not really necessary to put a 5/8 11 nut on the mount .... You need at least 4 revolutions on the nut ... which I recommend.. you could gain a bit more than the 2 inches by just not threading it all the way... 2 inches will suffice for most peoples cables...
If there is a demand for going out a bit further than 2 inches I could always make up a few @ 10 inches so there would be a 4 inch clearance..
mandarax 10-25-03, 01:43 AM A record count today for mounts in one day .... I guess Friday... Those Dell units must have finally started to ship or something...
Thanks again...
mandarax 10-26-03, 01:33 PM Ok... Batch 8 is in progress.
There will be some changes made to the mount... for Batch 8
Plates are already cut...
Changes are ...
1) the plates will be cnc laser cut with the shape of the hex nut right on the plate.
2) I made a fixture to enable all the nuts to be welded and positioned easily.
3) Since the shape of the hex nut is cnc laser cut exact every time... all the welds will be performed on the underside of the plate... IE you will not see the welds... as my welder will have a perfect mating hole to weld
4) Since the hole will be right through the plate... This will allow the thread in effect to go right through the hole and allow a range of drop for a ceiling mount configuration... almost another 2" I estimate so the drop can go as low as say 3" // This new feature will allow much more flexibility.
5) The application of heat to the plate when welding can have a tendency to draw the metal if too much heat is applied... With the hex right in the plate this will not happen...keeping everything nice and perfectly flat..
6) In the past the entire cnc bolt was powder coated... on the next batch I will be masking off where the knee joint cnc milled and drilled parts meet and making a higher friction machined joint. Anyone that wants to help me cut out little magnets for masking... let me know.. Will probably do it whilst watching the JOE SCHMO SHOW>
7) For the X1 I will continue making the colour match the projector... as I do not like the way a mount looks that is different, and my extentions for long drops match this color of mount exact..
8) You thought the originals looked great... wait till you see the plates with zero visible welds.
It costs a bit more to do these but I think it will make it easier for making adjustments.. I have been making all these changes to all the configurations of mounting plates and redoing all the Cad drawings all week. The NEC plate had to change form as the bending impeded the hole location... The Z1 / 1HD will also have the Hex right into the plate.
When the drawings are completed we take the run with the Hex nut and see how it fits.... then make any revisions live at the cnc machine....
This will not affect the hole locations being laser cut perfect everytime ... on the contrary... the plates will have Zero distortion.... I am excited about these changes and think they are going to be make an already esthetically great looking and functioning mount even better.
Robert ...
On the alternate design .... ceiling mount with a casting and spring...
The spring actually pushed and distorted the castings during powder coating..... over 500 degrees for over 25 minutes... The spring has a substantial amount of force to hold the projector in place. You may note some other products that are actually camera tripod parts spot welded to flatbar... These will not hold ... If you have it in the ceiling and there is movement or a floor above you can forget about it staying secure... So with this design I am redoing the steel ball and making a thread through it. this way unlimited drop distance.. and no welding ... with the plates being interchangeable.. This also set me back the last two weeks trying to discover what the hell happened... Now The first run of these is in the garbage bucket... again that is the spring design which I only released for the NEC chassis so far...
Hope you like these new changes ... let me know what you think.. I am always looking to get some feedback.. The price is staying the same. Still trying to dictate the cost to not be revised by making other configurations of mounts with new plates... Again I stay away from generic designs so far as I like the way a custom mount looks and works with a projector. The more understated it looks and homogenous to the overall look the more successful I think it is.
Thanks again for your support and hope to hear your comments.

Malignant 10-27-03, 08:08 PM Is it possible to make one for the X1 with a longer rod? Ill post a picture of what im talking about soon. Thanks
mandarax 10-27-03, 09:19 PM Malignant...
I have done all kinds of weird configurations....specials..
email robert@digital-visions.ca
Robert
Malignant 10-28-03, 12:15 AM Heres a picture of what i was talking about. Its around a foot long maybe more or less, from wall to edge.
mandarax 10-28-03, 10:50 AM Thanks for the pic Malignant...
If you describe what you want to do with the projector it may facilitate discussion..
Is it that you wish to mount on the wall and have the projector go beyond the edge of the moulding? and therefore the projector go beyond and hang below the horizontal plane of the the moulding? Please advise..
Would also assist if you had some measurements..
Looks like you have some very attractive moulding and columns...
Robert
Malignant 10-29-03, 10:26 AM Hey Robert, yes thats precisely what i want to do, mount the projector to the wall and have it hang over in front of the ledge/moulding(?). You see theres another problem, directly in view of where the projector would be theres a darn ceiling fan. Heres a pic of what the projector would see.
Ill get measurements today, im at work now.
Malignant 10-29-03, 10:28 AM Heres another pic of it at a different angle. Oh and btw how much would this cost? Thanks
mandarax 10-29-03, 03:27 PM Malignant...
Do you know if you go on the tv show "trading spaces" that ceiling fan will not survive..
Ah so you wish to cast an image just above the fireplace... ??
I am a pretty good guesser... but would need to know measurement specs... This arrangement has been done so many times I cant count them all. Just will require an extention ... or possibly if you can wait a bit longer for run 8 to be complete I can do it without an extention...
But I need measurements, and would modify the plate to take on a larger nut..... again best to email me ....robert@digital-visions.ca
They are welding run 8 now...
People think it is funny that I get excited about these.. and to tell you the truth... cant say as I blame them.. Oh how things change.... I only used to get this excited about two things.... guess what they are. But I can hardly wait to see what they look like welded...
I will see if I can get a pic of one welded... before powder coating.. The tolerance on the hex hole cnc laser cut is amazing. We were just commenting on how good the grade of steel is on these and maybe the possibility of black oxidizing them..
Will be sending specs for the z2 mount config on Friday... along with a mod on the Z1 ... plate... thinking of actually putting in a location for an additional pre air filter..
Would you guys like it if I laser cut a Z2 or ... X1 right into the plate... or do you think it would be a waste of energy... and money. Gimme some feedback.
Robert
AndrewS99 10-30-03, 08:34 AM Rob:
Excellent mount! I just put mine up last night and it's understated and fits like a glove. More importantly, it is within the WAF (wife acceptance factor). Her first comment was..."That's it?" She was expecting some big bulky ugly looking mount and was pleasantly suprised. There was just enough space behind the X1 for my RamElectronics VGA-Component cable and life is good.
I wanted to put the mount on a stud so I had to move the 1000 lb entertainment center over about 8" last night to get the picture centered.
Thanks again for your effort in making this mount.....
mandarax 11-02-03, 11:04 AM Thanks Andrew...
Like I said women seem to love this mount.
All the welding on the mounting plates is complete and I picked them up on Friday... They look AWESOME.
Since the hex nuts shape is cut exact into the plate by a cnc laser cutter this will make for more flexibility on height adjustments for ceiling mount configurations... as you can thread right through the plate..
There is now no visible welds... I have a sample of what it took to pound the welded nut off the plate... amazing strength...
Will try and get some pics out soon... pre powder coated and post powder coated..
Powder coating will be finished soon...
Don't forget that I have both the VGA adapters and Svideo adapters... and can throw these in the same packaging.
Robert
theaterman 11-02-03, 08:20 PM Just sent you paypal for my mount....can't wait to see what the new one's look like without visible welds! My paypal id was icanfly1canu@yahoo.com...hope batch 8 gets done soon!

Curatio 11-03-03, 03:22 AM Hi. Are there still plans for a Panasonic AE300/500 mounting plate? Thanks.
mandarax 11-04-03, 04:27 PM Run 7 is sold out.... I was even trying to hold back an extra 10 for people that were in the midst of construction...
Sorry about that...
The machine shop is still doing the cnc machining for run 8 but the Powder Coating has a spot in the que for me next week...
Although I do not like to take preorders... I will allow it for run 8 since some have already ordered out of run 8. This way I can also predo all the packaging, labelling etc... and there won't be as much kaos when they get released.... Last few orders I ended up staying up for almost 48 hrs straight packaging and shipping. Sorry for the lag but I am doing up alot for other projectors that I endorse now as well.
Curatio... I will be jumping right to the 500 for the Panasonic... As soon as I get my hands on one and do up the Cad drawings.
I have the preliminary Z2 Cad drawings complete but will not cnc cut until I get one in my hands... to verify measurements. It costs me more to cut one plate than I charge for the entire assembly... If it is incorrect at all I have to keep repaying until it is right. Gets really expensive if there is any bending etc... like in the NEC chassis.. BTW some of the revised NEC chassis plates are already cut as well.
If you want to preorder for run 8 ... robert@digital-visions.ca
Welcome any questions... If you have questions it is also more efficient to use email than a PM at this site. My PM gets full and is not the 1st priority and also takes up even more bandwith on this site.
Sorry for some of the brevity in the more recent emails... Just trying to ensure I keep up and stay prompt with all of them.
Cheers
Robert
Ok, I just received my mount.
I understand how it connect to the projector, that was easy....however, will I use all of the pieces you sent with it? I have no idea where to use the little V spring thingies (two of them) or the longer bolts they were attached to....can you let me know....There were also 2 long screws included but why would I need these if I use the bolts? ...anyone??? Anyone have any pictures of it ceiling mounted?
malbadon 11-04-03, 09:46 PM the two "v" things on the long bolts are if you are going through drywall. Since you can't get behind the drywall you push those through and they expand out on the other side.
He just includes a random assortment of the stuff you would need to mount it for various applications.
ronone10 11-05-03, 10:39 AM Hi,
I too have a Panasonic L300U and would like to know if you have a mount available for it?
Thanks...
Ron
mandarax 11-06-03, 06:16 PM Gruson ... those thingies are called toggle bolts. They arent cheap.. neither are those stainless steel screws. Use one or the other... I also included the driver bit for the screw and allen wrench... Me thinks I am way to generous.
Panasonic... I am kinda holding out for the 500... I did a few of the 300's and decided to go with my spring mount for this one... I just completed the mods to the casting... and will be ready to fly with this one soon. I have to make up a ton of these now just to pay back the fixturing and tooling costs. Oh well ... good thing its fun. My ten year old daughter is learning,, business, geography, logistics so it is priceless.

malbadon 11-06-03, 09:45 PM Got the mount this afternoon, thanks bunches)
Course, now its just sitting here on my desk...I wish the place I ordered my cables from had been as fast :P
Renegade59 11-06-03, 10:27 PM Mandarax,
I sent you an email looking for a mount, but hadn't heard back. Just wanted to confirm the price and find out when run 8 would be ready to go. I'll send ya another message in case the first one didn't make it or you can mail me at renegade at the-last-domain.org
mandarax 11-06-03, 11:21 PM I know the machining started on Monday... So I expect they will be done soon... Will try and bug em tomorrow... All the plates are cut and welded.
I expect it will be a week and a bit. but less than two... Have quite a few pre orders and these will go out as received. Getting the magnet strips for masking the machine faces tomorrow... Sorry for the delay.... but I just thought of some of the changes and wanted to implement them when I had a small window of time to revise the Cad Drawings... Wasnt expecting run 7 to run out as soon as it did either...

Neville 11-10-03, 04:38 PM Robert,
you just got my order, so please hurry sending it before my kid gets hold of my X1 :)
Thanks
Neville
mandarax 11-11-03, 02:34 AM Will do ... I will post some pics of just the plates shortly.
Robert
mandarax 11-11-03, 04:40 AM Here is a pic of what it took to get the weld nut off the plate..
You will note the hex hole that is cut in this pic and now the nut sits right in the weld...
Any guesses of what it takes to bend 14 ga steel like this ..
Robert
mandarax 11-11-03, 04:48 AM Another pic showing the projector plate before powder coating...
Check this out as a side note..... pic was taken in the same room.. I used the same material I use for the border of a screen frame for the black background... this is great demonstration of what it does to light...
The stuff is incredible ..

mandarax 11-12-03, 02:47 PM Update...
Thanks for all the preorders...
The cnc machined parts making up the knee joint will be picked up tomorrow.
Powder coating will be dependent on how long it takes me to assemble for powder coating and masking with magnets the cnc'd parts... something new I am trying out on this run as well... just to the mating parts of the knee joint. Have to cut out 300 magnets... Yipes.
Robert
mandarax 11-14-03, 01:30 PM UPDATE...
All the cnc machining will be picked up this afternoon and assembled and brought in for powder coating on Monday morning...
I picked up a couple of pieces of the cnc machining this morning... I had a pattern cnc machined on the mating knee joint for this run which is different than the last ones... should make for an even improved bond on the knee joint and this will be masked with the magnets before powder coating...
Thanks again for all the pre-orders.. I have all the paperwork finished to date for all the preorders received... and boxes etc.. made up to assist for quick release.
Robert
woot.. thnx for the update mandarax!
mandarax 11-16-03, 12:24 PM I picked up all the cnc machined pieces on Friday... Part of the delay is that I ran a lot more for other model projectors ....
Robert.
mandarax 11-17-03, 08:49 PM Ok ... I assembled them for powder coating... and dropped them off today... I gotta tell ya... I can assemble the entire mount now in 17 seconds/// it actually takes a bit longer for the powder coating assembly due to lining everything up and spacing everything so the lock nuts do not get locked onto the welded nuts.
Can hardly wait to see what they look like with zero visible welds...
Will try and get pics out soon after they are done as well as the pics of the pattern design on the actual cnc knee joint which I also revised...
Robert
whitemist 11-20-03, 07:44 AM mandarax
you have a PM
mandarax 11-20-03, 10:01 PM Should get them back tomorrow... This grey color for the X1 is difficult to have on a run because it is unique... therefore I am at the mercy of the que and have to do alot of begging...
I will also try and get a pic of the cnc milling pattern I programmed for the knee joint... these are also being masked with the magnets so the inside of the knee joint will have no powder coating...should give it very excellent holding grip.
NEC plates are also completed and being welded now ... powder coating will be black... all the machining is complete
Z2 drawings completed... awaiting a 2HD which is scheduled the first week of December... want a live one to take measurements from...
Powder coating will also be black..
Robert... all the machining is complete..
I was trying to locate Digital Visions in Ontario but I couldn't find you. What is your location?
HAZED
mandarax 11-21-03, 05:25 PM I am between Kitchener (famous for oktoberfest and Cambridge) ... in a small hamlet called Roseville. In the heart of the golden triangle..
Will be picking up on Monday... had a choice between a run on night shift or waiting till Monday... decided to go with the day shift run....
Will be shipping part of the first run on Monday and Tuesday morning.
Robert
mandarax 11-24-03, 03:00 PM Yippeee I ooooo...... I have them ..... They look great... The magnet idea to mask the machining worked out amazingly well... Will try and take some pics soon.. Will be releasing them tonight and some tomorrow morning should be caught up with all pre orders by Tuesday afternoon.
Robert
jefftse 11-24-03, 04:46 PM madarax:
I just bought a X1 and i have a couple questions.
What is the advantage of your mount than the manufacture one?
How is yours to compare with this one I saw from ebay?
http://www.perfectmounts.com/
(ebay is selling this for $65 and free shipping)
I just don't know much to choose what ceiling mount will fit me the best.
Please advise
Thanks
Jeff
hiijacker 11-24-03, 11:35 PM i SENT YOU A pm BUT HAVENT HEARD BACK. i WOULD LIKE TO ORDER A MOUNT FOR MY X1 TAHT I WILL ATTACH TO MY CEILING. i WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO MOUNT IT AS CLOSE TO MY CEILING AS POSSIBLE SO SEND ME THE SHORT "PIPE" hOW EXACTLY DO I PLACE MY ORDER OTHER THAN JUST EMAILING YOU $83 ON PAYPAL? HOW DO I LET YOU KNOW THAT I WANT HTE SHORT "PIPE"?
Thank you Mandarax for the mount and the X1... now I just need a screen.. but all in due time. Keep up the great work and thanks again. I am a very happy X1 owner.
Here is a pic of My X1 mounted. Thanks.
mandarax 11-25-03, 05:19 PM Ok... all the preorders except one are all shipped.... Just over 60 in one night of frantic packaging...
Can't wait to get some reaction to the changes from people that ordered... You do not see any welds!!! The cnc machining pattern on the knee joint locks unbelievably well. The magnets to mask the powder coating on the knee joint ... did a spectacular job..
I do not want to put down other designs...
But you may wish to note that complaints over the non aluminum parts as advertised and plastic which is used as a one of the plates is noted... parts used for a component that has nothing to do with a projector mount are used... finish is not powder coated to match the projector.... 5/8 steel andh stainless steel hardware on parts being touched by hands vs... plates cnc laser cut and holes also cnc laser cut to match the projector vs... parts that are used for adjusting and holding the projector are cnc milled and drilled...vs.... mount can be used as wall or ceiling configuration...vs , extentions and option pricing vs... parts that are precision made with cnc equipment vs stamped out... or cut with a saw... Std. drop distances between less than 4.5" now and 15.5" vs.... engineers are my best customers as they know the differences between this product and others. About 60% of my first customers were engineers. I would challenge any mount manufactured to a dead weight test... the load psi rating of 5/8 is 3500 lbs. ...... If I took the example of alot of the manufactured plates which are just punched stampings.... the cost would be a fraction of what my design costs to produce. But what would be the point... it would look just as ugly and not have the flexibility, the holding power, the ergonomics, ease of installation, and would be inferior in just about every property one desires.
With the new changes the pricing will definitely not be going down in price. The pricing is set now to try and establish enough volume for a person to get hired full time to do the logistics work, including all the prime products... To try and keep costs down... I am producing a mount specific for the product.... You will note on the NEC mounts,, they form directly to the shape of the underside of the projector.... the Z plates will include venting at the precise locations of the actual projector.... You know it would so much easier to make a generic plate and say drill holes and use shims, and sleeve adjusters... but they look like crap... and they do not function as well. I get the response all the time that it looks homogenous to the projector,,,, it is very easy to install,,,, and very easy to adjust..... and it just got a whole lot better. Make no mistake about it .... it is a business and is only part of the arsenal.... If there was no demand for it... I simply wouldnt make it.... If someone purchases this product not linked to the AVS,,, they pay a considerable amount more for it...
There is also going to be brand new designs that are made utilizing castings..... Projectors that will benefit from this design will have plates made for it as well and the designs will be interchangeable.
Hijacker .... I have a PM in my sent items back to you ... this is odd.. First I do not use pipe.. it is solid 5/8 nc steel.. If you wish to have the mount as close to the ceiling as possible then you would order it utilizing the 2 2.5" pieces of the cnc machined and drilled knee joint. No extra charge for doing swaps... It should be noted on the Paypal info...
It again is best to use email... robert@digital-visions.ca .... I try and get to this site and respond as promptly as I can but email is checked several times per day.
Ernbl.. Thanks for the pic... I love seeing the applications,,, X1 owners definitely make this venture alot of fun.
Robert
mandarax 11-25-03, 10:46 PM where are those welds... ???
mandarax 11-25-03, 10:53 PM Re: generic vs custom made for chassis... fits the NEC HT1000, NEC 240K and NEC 260K ... another fine set of projectors endorsed.
Here is a pic of the newest NEC mount plate. It looks better than a generic piece of swing arms that have hole drilled through them and shimmed... think... in fact I think it looks better than others finished stuff I have seen.
Contours right onto the projector perfectly....
mandarax 11-25-03, 10:59 PM here is a pic of an un powdercoated part of the machining... I revised it with the pattern depicted in the photo .... not sure how good you can see it in the photo... but there is circular grooves... and these were masked with magnets (so I could reuse em next time) prior batches were powder coated as well and therefore not near as much bite when tightened.
mandarax 11-25-03, 11:03 PM here is another pic of the machining on the inside of the cnc machined and drilled knee joint ..
mandarax 11-25-03, 11:07 PM Here is a shot of one of the side benefits and also something to be carefule with on the projector plate... This shot is with the ceiling plate.
If you want some leverage between sizes on vertical adjustment you can now go through the plate... with the cnc machined knee joint piece ON THE CEILING PLATE ONLY>>> this would allow you to raise and lower the projector within the relevant range of the threads... of course you would have to drill a hole through the ceiling...
mandarax 11-25-03, 11:10 PM Here is another pic of the plate only that goes into the projector..
mandarax 11-25-03, 11:12 PM I get asked all the time for pics of the extentions..
So here is what the extention with the sleeve looks like ...
mandarax 11-25-03, 11:18 PM One of the benefits for the hex hole cnc laser cut into the ceiling plate is that if you have a serious drop situation you can now order two plates and gang them back to back and drill a hole through ceiling to accomodate the nut... this gives double the plate strength plus you have twice as much thread onto the extention to hold it firm with far less refraction from vibrations...
mandarax 11-25-03, 11:32 PM here is a pic of the hardware you get ...
Note that the piece that you touch with your hands that goes into the knee joint is stainless steel. the nut is also stainless steel... the nut is a nyloc nut so you have to crank it the first time you use it to bite through the nylon insert... this helps it lock into place... compare this to what others use... including the diameter... I also include the allen wrench to use to tighten it .... from my own experience I know that especially with something with excitement attached the allen wrench is sure to go MIA..suggest you put it in your carrying case after you are done installing it. I also include the nut driver for US customers.
As was mentioned before there is also toggle bolts included ... these are spring loaded ... It is only recommended that you go through the joist or stud ... where the screws provided would be used... Some people use anchors.... the toggle bolts are exponentially better than going into the ceiling or wall cavity with no stud or joist... One could always use both.. if you drill another hole through the plate...
Now just so you do not crank the hell out of the three bolts that go into the projector... you can just tighten these by hand ... they are not going to go anywhere or vibrate off the projector... I heard of some people believing that you had to tighten these as hard as possible... DO NOT DO THIS ... the projector has brass inserts to take these metric bolts... held in by plastic... crank em tight and risk cracking the case.. NOT GOOD ..
mandarax 11-26-03, 12:14 AM Here is a shot of a ceiling mount with the shortest pieces for 4.5" drop...
The reason I am putting this in shot in is not just to show the shortest drop... check out the orientation of this ie where the stainless steel bolt and nut go through the knee joint.. In this orientation the mount will swivel up and down.... On the next pic you will see that the orientation was changed from 90 degrees to 180 degrees and therefore the swivel will be diagonal side to side. You can orient the knee in any direction you wish.. just make sure you are threaded in far enough... All the pieces come bubble wrapped seperately.. It now takes me 17 seconds to assemble the entire unit. It is not a static one position mount... if you wished to rotate horizontally you would loosen the lock nut turn it in the desired direction and then just lock down again...
Also note that the second set of nuts that are NOT welded to the plates are just for locking and adjusting... You do not need to use a wrench just hand tightening will do .. Three complete revolutions on the threads of the welded nuts and you are golden..
mandarax 11-26-03, 12:20 AM Ok here is the other pic ... note that the projector will now move on a diagonal plane in this orientation...
Thats all the pics for now...
I have to go have a head on collision with my pillow now...
Thanks for all the preorders again... and for supporting this ongoing venture.
mandarax 11-26-03, 01:04 AM Re .... comparisons to what others are doing ...
This is what I would call perfect ... This again is my NEC projector portion of the mounting plate uncoated.
This pic is to hilight the level of precision that goes into these custom mounts... you will note that the holes are perfect with zero tolerance allowance... just put the plate on the projectors and spin the metric supplied bolts in... You will note on the NEC the shape is not symetrical,, the distance between the holes is not the same... the positioning of the holes especially the front is not centered... there is two different levels on the underside and it is not flat ... Hmmm wonder if the manufacturer does not want to make it easy to make a mount...
It only does me more good to compare what others are doing... or should I say not doing... You will note that each and every one of some of the others look exactly the same no matter what model projector it is ...
Oh yeah... the X2 will be on the same chassis I am told..
There is a whole series of pics of run 8 prior to this one..
Cheers and enjoy..
Robert
mandarax 11-27-03, 10:56 AM Thanks for all the preorders that I received for run 8.. I updated the info on the very first post for ordering information... and Happy Thanksgiving.. There is still 115 left from run 8 left...for the X1 and the NEC/s will be going in for powder coating this week.
Robert
DallasTom 11-27-03, 10:46 PM Mandarax you have a pm.
mandarax 11-28-03, 08:33 AM Wow lots of downloads and no comments... just emails... how is this thread going to get to 100 pages by the end of the year...??
Tom pm'd you back..
Vantorax 11-28-03, 08:48 AM Wow lots of downloads and no comments... just emails... how is this thread going to get to 100 pages by the end of the year...??
I already have your fabulous mount and it's up on my ceiling. I'll let you know if I ever need anothe one. ;)
mandarax 11-29-03, 11:40 AM Record shipping week of these mounts... Thanks ... It sure takes at least some of the pressure off since I had to substantially increase the quantity to pay for some of the additional costs to cut the hex holes into the plates,,, grinding ,,, deburring,,, and the magnets to mask the cnc machining... and labor to install... Have about 90 left at this point...
Some of the sources seem to have dried up for the X1... Not sure if the problems in China over tarriff dispute is the cause ... or the Dell Bonanza in the USA ...
Robert
popcanface 11-30-03, 09:19 AM mandarax, I love you x1 mount! Do you think it would work for me?...80.5 "ceiling...50" image hight... Would that put the bottom of the image 10" from floor?(4:3).
thanks, Chris
mandarax 11-30-03, 12:02 PM Chris..
You can specify which drop you wish... the standard for a wall mount is the combination of the 8" with the 2.5" .... this when ceiling mounted is a drop of 10" ... since your room is only 6'7" you can specify that you wish to go with two 2.5" cnc machined knee joint pieces which will bring the drop to only 4.5" ... if you have a higher ceiling you can also go with to 8" cnc pieces... drop of 15.5" ... Now one of the beauties of the recent mods with the hex hole cnc laser cut into the plate is the fact that you can go up through the plate if you drill a hole through the ceiling... and actually have part of the thread go through the ceiling... there is about 2" of thread total on the cnc machined and drilled piece.. this allows much more flexibility and a greater range of movement vertically.. you will note mathematically that the full range depending on what combo you choose is almost completely able to be accomplished.
Some of the installers I work with have given some great feedback on these... and they love the modifications..
Not sure if I mentioned that the X2 is to be on the same chassis as the X1 so it seems that Infocus will run this chassis for an extended tenure of time.. at least this is what I am being told at this time...
popcanface 11-30-03, 12:28 PM mandarax,
Thank you for your fast response! So, Let's see if I understand...If I went with the two 2.5" cnc machined knee joint pieces the total drop from ceiling to top of projector would be 4.5"....I could extend the thread into the ceiling and decrease that 4.5" by what an inch? The X1 is 3" from lens center to bottom of case? Does that sound right? Also do you have both x1 adapter cables? How much?
mandarax 11-30-03, 01:41 PM popcanface...
All the above is correct except for the measurement of the bottom to the center of the lens... since the projector mounted is inverted and there is no feet. which are about 1/2 of an inch...
The vga to component is 12.00 and the svideo to component is 15.00 .. and yes I have both of them.
I am at the point now where I have about 30 prepackaged.... ready to go... ship same day or next depending on time payment is made and received.
Robert
Robert,
I'm interested as well in the mount, specifically used as a wall mount where the wall is on the side of the projector.
How do I get in touch with you to order one of these (I realize it's buried in this thread somewhere, but I don't have the time to dig through it)? Do you still have some packed and ready to ship? What kind of shipping times do you anticipate to S Florida?
Regards,
Andrew
Mounts look great!.. can't wait to get mine!
mandarax 12-01-03, 02:16 PM Ajay ...
Everything is on the very first post...
my email is robert@digital-visions.ca
I have plenty prepackaged units... I had to run a monster run for 8 to try and pay for the extra cnc laser cut holes, new welding fixtures, magnets for masking etc..etc.....and keep the pricing the same.. @83.00 to the US landed cost.
Takes on average 3 to 4 days... ships same day or next.. specials depend on what is involved.. ships via fedex.. and have not had one held yet..
Thanks NizzZ8 .. I am jealous if that pic was taken this year... My daughter has a snow pass being in grade 5.. Ski Canada offers a free pass to a few hundred ski resorts to go complimentary up to 3 times per location. Hope to get back into some shape other than packaging mounts and answering emails very soon so I can keep up with her..
Robert
stevemadison 12-01-03, 07:50 PM Mandarax,
Do you have any mounts available for the Sanyo Plv-Z1?
I purchased one for my X1 and my friend needs one for his Sanyo, so I am coming to you first. Also, he has 10' ceilings so I'm sure an extention will be needed.:D
mandarax 12-02-03, 01:29 AM Steve..
I have completed the cad drawings on the Z1 mount.. and even have the vent holes positioned into the bottom of the plate... but here is the problem... after doing all this work... I am not sure that the quantity on this projector will support a run at this time with the release of the Z2... and the current pricing of the Z2. Also have the Cad drawings ready for the Z2 and I am just waiting to get my grips on my demo unit to confirm drawings... Unless there is at least 80 made up it just cannot be done.... at 80 I just break even not counting work on logistics, packaging supplies, admin,
If the pricing on the Z1 changes dramatically on the release of the Z2 to push out the balance of inventory I will run it... basically that is what I am waiting on is my pricing for the Z2 and its availability.. On paper it looks like a winner.. Hope you understand... I can only do one pattern cut per plate... I try and use up the entire plate and minimize the amount of offal with the pattern being cut.
So ending this little rant.. it depends on the pricing and availability of the Z2... and will know very soon..
The run down now
X1,, and X2 on same chassis done
NEC... chassis ..done powder coating in process
BenQ 8700... drawings to be confirmed
Z2.. Drawings to be confirmed
Panasonic.. ... preliminary drawing... waiting for release in NA
Infocus 5700 and 7200.. drawings complete... not proceeding.
Z1 ... drawings complete .... volume concerns...
Spring mount... NEC, BenQ, Z2,
jenielsen 12-02-03, 09:38 AM Mandarax,
I just sent you an email.
Can you please post the dimensions of the ceiling plate. I thought I saw it at one point in the past, but without digging through 30+ pages... I did check the first page and also the preceeding couple of pages... It's the only thing holding me from placing an order.
Thanks!
mandarax 12-02-03, 11:16 AM Jenielson...
The Ceiling/ Wall plate... is 5" by 3" hole spacing is 4" ... Tried to make it the same shape as an electrical outlet... but not ugly and square..
I try and put all the relevant info on the first post... but it is difficult with all that has been covered in the last 30 some odd pages..
Hope this helps..
mandarax 12-02-03, 09:17 PM Anyone know what is happening with the supply of X1's .. ??
mandarax 12-03-03, 01:21 AM Alot of people received the mount and in the interest of brevity will answer this question again...
There is a bit included with the hardware... this is not for the allen cap screws that go into the projector.. I just include it to make it easier..
Also there is toggle bolts and screws included... I can of course only recommend the use of the screws into a joist.. I just include the toggle bolts.. in addition to the screws... If someone is considering the use of just going through with an anchor... take a look at the toggle bolts if you have a piece of drywall kicking around try and pull semi installing the screws and see how much force it takes to pull out a toggle bolt vs an anchor.. the toggle bolt supplied will be exponentially require a much higher psi force to damage ,... remove... the screw..
screwing in the cap screws to the projector... there is plenty of thread on the capscrews to just hand turn tight... there is no need to get an allen wrench and start reefing the cap screws into the projector.. Think of the makeup of the projector... these are brass inserts in a plastic mould.. if you reef on it to tight what could happen is that you can damage a case.. or the brass insert.. One individual stated they tightened as hard as they possibly could.. Dont do this.. it is not smart..
tolerances... you will note that the tolerance on the plate holes that are laser cut is very exact... here is what I recommend ... take the plate put it over the projector... get each of the threads started.. then hand tighten them...
SirMagnus 12-03-03, 11:40 AM Mandarax,
Speaking of hardware, I didn't seem to get any of the hardware with my mount. Probably attributed to the mad rush to ship.
Can you help me out?
mandarax 12-03-03, 12:47 PM SirMagnus..
received your email today... yours had an extention and an open box .... Maybe attributed to my driving habits moreso than anything... as it was the only box not dropped off at the ground warehouse..due to it being enroute to pick up the extention...
There was 47 preorder mounts in the car ... with 6 open boxes... as per email will go out today ... and sorry about that...
Robert
clayfree 12-03-03, 01:17 PM "Anyone know what is happening with the supply of X1's .. ??"
That's a good question. I have been trying to get one ane they are very hard to come by right now. Just check mysimon.com and just about everyone listed has no stock and the ones that do have stock I am wary of ordering from.
Clay
mandarax 12-03-03, 08:28 PM I have 4 installers waiting on this... its crazy... did 9 demos last week .. then have to say i dunno... on a product that you only make 50 dollars its kind of brutal... when Infocus runs out themselves... believe me... no one has em..
there was a problem a short while ago when the Chinese government siezed assets due to a tarriff conflict and Infocus had to drop 12 million in an escrow type account in lieu of settlement ... and maybe this has something to do with it... plus the Dell bonanza that was happening a while ago... when those were released that caused me to run out of mounts for 2 weeks... which time I used to make new fixtures.. and do some mods for the latest run..
I was told that it could take two months to get back to normal... so this date would coincide also with the release of the X2.. I have some of the first allocations locked... Lets hope they get there XXXX together soon.
adopted 12-04-03, 10:05 PM Mandrax, you got an email. I'm the fellow who never registered an account.. till today :)
That chinese goverment thing could have been why I ordered mine around Superbowl time but didn't recieve it till April of this year. Interesting.
mandarax 12-05-03, 01:27 AM I guess it demonstrates to a certain extent the perils of doing business in China... sounded kinda fishy to me... Maybe someone didnt get their free 7200 model when they were suppose to which provoked the action in the first place... You would never see this happen in North America.. or Europe. Still China opens its trade far more than Japan does and you have to give em credit for that as it may mean equalizing trade or improving it as China workers demand not to have to work so long to pay for a big mac..
I have good news to report... My daughter who was actively checking orders on the Map received an A in Geography for the first time ever... one of her worst subjects.. and that was Canadian Geography... she is going to smoke USA geography... In the last semester last year she smoked science when the main topic was light... A's are not easy to come by now that there is a provincial standard...
Thanks for the recent flurry of orders..
Update on the Z2 mount... I was going to do the 2HD mount and signaturize the mount as the 1HD actually outsold the Z1.. found out today that it due to vaguaries in the distribution channels Studio Experience pulled it just before announcing its release, and made no contractual agreement for allocation. This may put the brakes on me producing this mount chassis... I was going to keep one of my allocations and use it for verifying the drawings next week... so came very close to cutting 175 plates with 2HD laser cut into the plate... thanks to this forum I found out about this before it was even released to distribution channels.. which oddly enough were not advised before endusers making the inquiry... this site just saved me in cost 9625 dollars... as I was powder coating these H2 ..Hummer black.. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU AVS
Canuck Shootout II ... going to do another one ... will be next year probably mid to late February... see some of the details in the >3500 forum..... the X2 will be released by then as well... no real reason for posting in the >3500 forum other than some of the lineup but will still be a good mix.. multiple screen options,,on full screens ... then firing on two identical screens.... possibly 4... from the exact same source at the exact same time... HD satelite... modded dvd players.. HTPC's check it out if interested... lots of AVS'ers... 77 last time... and over 30 didnt show due to SARS.. laid back ... no marketing... alot of guys showed up by themselves... but I dont want to add this event to this thread as it is packed enough... the directions are in the other thread as aforehand mentioned..
Cheers..
Robert
DanNewcomer 12-05-03, 09:53 AM Mandrax,
Just wanted you and everyone to know that your mount is a fine work of metal smithing.
All the pieces fit, the paint is even and smoth, I like the heft and look of the mount.
Also it was wrapped very well with absoulutly no chance of anything rubbing to become scratched or damaged.
Thanks to you and your daughter for concieving, producing, and shipping such a nice product.
My best regards,
Dan:D
mandarax 12-05-03, 04:46 PM Dan
Thanks for the kind words..
The metal work actually is done by machinery that combined costs over 2 million dollars.... the powder coating from a firm that does the best work within a few hundred miles... These firms actually should take the credit for the metal work they do.... They know I am a picky ******* and never disappoint.. Also the shipping thanks should go to Fedex... they have only disappointed on a couple of occasions... one shift of paperwork on a mount which actually could have been caused by customs, one drop off to an apartment lobby while the customer was at home.. got stolen.. , and one delivery two blocks from where it was suppose to be...,, and one completely demolished box.. but absolutely no damage to the mount as it turned out... so for over 800 this is a very good track record.. Also have to say that pricing for this work to keep the cost down ...every company used has such faith in the future of this and new designs that are coming up that they have made pricing as if the volume was exponential to what it is presently... they have such faith in the success of this aspect of the business that they are willing to price it based on what volumes will be in a year or two... So as long as a person can take over the logistics at some point these will be made available indefinitely and bet on all popular future models to update the mount in the event that an upgrade occurs..
Nothing but the actual wrapping,,, and Cad work,,, and conceiving happens here other than the assembly and fitting of parts before powder coating, and disassembly post powder coating.. As mentioned earlier my background is predominately in Finance,,, almost exclusively with large high tech manufacturing firms.... but spent more time in Engineering and the actual plant floor than in my office... I have a great time making these... I get to stay with my roots with firms I have dealt with in the past.. I get to meet new people all over the world.... It is an ancillary product to my business .... It keeps me out of trouble... It keeps my shipping discounts competitive.... And I love working on mechanical designs... that have esthetics, ergonomis built into them..
I was at the dentist today... and asked him if I could take apart his arm assembly for his imaging equipment... just wanted to see how heavy the springs were..
seemed a bit rougher at the drill today...
Thanks again..
Robert
mandarax 12-06-03, 02:00 PM Gotta hand it to Infocus... had an installer in dire need for an X1, another that had his wife jabbing him about when he was going to get it and another that is a busy bee reselling them in Alberta ... and they went way out of their way to satisfy and came through with flying colors..
I received some very good info that supply will trickling out ..quite a bit more again next week..
Just over half of run 8 is gone.. every shipment including the late afternoon ones received yesterday were dropped off at the Fedex warehouse last night,
Robert
adopted 12-06-03, 04:46 PM  Half gone you say? I gotta order pretty soon then, especially if I'd like this befoer X-mas.
I eventually wanna move my setup downstairs and into a longer room, and I'd like to take your wonderful mount with me. This rooms got 11" overhang which I think would be great for kinda hiding the PJ from plain view. It's got an 8ft ceiling not counting that hang. The only problem I forsee is the ceiling fan situation, I have no qualms about gettin a much shallower fan. I just hope it never comes to the point where I have to ditch the fan, Summer days in Central Valley California aren't always the most pleasant w/o a ceiling fan hehe.
I'll try and put up a picture just in case anyone has any good ideas on mounting otherwise :)
Excuse the quality, I only have a camcorder and those things dont take great stills.
mandarax 12-06-03, 07:51 PM adopted....
Just wallmount it on the beam.... Some guys have been buying up my extra wall/ceiling pieces.. and they actually just move the projector about the house...
I was kind of amazed too how quickly they are going ... but then I received my fedex bill and reality struck...
mandarax 12-07-03, 11:56 AM I will be making up a couple of these ones for Screen mounts... (for the Canuck Shootout I am hosting in the early 2004)... Did a few of these up for customers... If anyone wants to see some pics before they go to the event facility let me know.. One guy has his screen and the mount ... he has other rooms with the mounting plates for the ceiling and wall... and when he wants just unscrews the projector and screen and remounts both..
mandarax 12-08-03, 09:41 AM I am going to the powder coating facility this morning... As you are aware the case on the X1 the gray is a bit industrial looking... Give me your thoughts on giving the mount a bit more pizazz and matching it to the silvery outer shell... or if it was just powder coated black... Very important decision.... With the advent of ever increasing variety of projector plates it makes it extremely difficult to try and keep the costs in check and keep doing a color for each one... My extention sleeves for large drops does match the color of the X1 powder coat used... Just would appreciate getting some response... There is always some requests for white also .... but I have found that through time many will revise the color of the ceilings and walls to not be white in a HT utilized room as it is the most reflective color and therefore a very poor choice... Many will change after spending some time in these forums and therefore one would have a white mount... that sticks out like a sore thumb.. unless the projector is also white.. But color is so subjective... look at all the colors people choose for automobiles...
Would appreciate hearing what you think... I want to resist going the generic route ...ie one plate with moving parts and shims..and sliding sleeves as I don't personally like the way these things work.
jdonigan 12-08-03, 12:47 PM Mandarax,
I'll be ordering an X1 mount as soon as PayPal re-authorizes me (grumble, grumble), and either the silver or the black would be fine. Having seen an all-black theater room, I can see why many would like to do that.
I won't be able to, due to WAF, so silver would work great for me.
jefftse 12-08-03, 01:42 PM mandarax:
i just got the mount today. do you have the instruction?
I just bit the bullet and ordered a mount + vga adapter today. I contemplated doing a DIY mount with a couple of flanges, pipe and a piece of MDF but the clean minimalistic looks of Mandarax's mount is well worth the difference in costs compared to me building something that will look like I built it myself to everyone who sees it.
Now if it'll only get here by this weekend! Thanks.
mjmchase 12-08-03, 05:03 PM I am thinking about purchasing this mount when I get my X1 at the end of the month. Quick question. My theatre room is 23' x 12' with a 6'8" drop ceiling. I am planning a 4:3 screen that is 80" x 60". with your mount will I be able to fit this size screen on a 6'8" wall, as I understand that the image the X1 produces falls a few inches below the level of the lens?
Thanks,
Chuck

They'll be imperssed you built it yourself but you won't be impressed when you notice the heat disappation problems. Trust me.
Black's just classic and would match much closer to the extremely dark walls I already have hehe.

1st, you have been paypal'd :D.
2nd, you cant go wrong with black. i'd prefer black personally, but then again i dont want to wait for your next run(s).
as for a more universal approach (keeping in mind i have never been hands on with any other PJ's), could you not just make 2 or 3 slots within each ear. im sure wouldnt cover everything, but u could get the most popular models in one design.
i just did a cheesy visual with your front pic so u know what i mean.
although then again youve probly already thought of this ;)
jenielsen 12-08-03, 09:22 PM Robert,
Please check your email.

mandarax 12-09-03, 10:36 AM Jdonigan... look forward to receiving your order..
Jefftse... Just line everything up and look at how the knee joint works for adjusting.... the extra bolts on the knee joint pieces are just for locking in your adjustments.. hand turning tight is adequate... You do not have to turn the knee joint pieces in all the way ...three complete revolutions is enough.. I recommend all the way in ....BUT NOT THROUGH THE PROJECTOR PLATE... then back it off to orient the joint to what movement and axis you want the projector to move...
For a wall mount ... the diagonal adjustment is on the nut on the wall plate..rotate to desired location and hand tighten the lock nut on that juncture.... for horizontal adjustment ... on the knee joint short piece again just make sure you do not go through the plate... into the projector.. just move horizontally on the thread.. and then lock it in on the locking bolt..
For vertical ...adjust this utilizing the stainless steel nut and bolt to desired location and tighten.... using the provided allen wrench.. and an adjustable wrench .... hold with an adjustable and tighten with the allen wrench... the stainless steel nut has nyloc inside of it to give it more grip... so the first time you tighten you will have to go through the nyloc and it will be a bit stiff as the threads make there way through the nylon..
Hope some of this helps.. remember you only need to have three complete revolutions on the thread..
The offset for a 60 by 80 screen will be aproximately another 5 to 6 inches..depending on your installation.. You do not want to keystone if at all possible as keystoning results in spherical distortions that are not recoverable and does affect image detail... You will have no trouble fitting that screen in a 6' 8" wall.. btw.. just might want to go for a 4.5" drop.. instead of the standard 10" ..
sea1... thanks for the order... I think if one realistically looks at what the net result will be... the cost of procuring various parts... Cost of paint..for metal,, the cost of travelling to go get those parts... without even factoring in the time involved to build and assemble... it is kind of a no brainer... I applaud the DIY'er but usually only when it nets a result that does not look compromised.... or ends up costing more in the long run.. there is better things to do with your time in HT that can be utilized for this..
Night.. Wow that pic was the first one made and was made as a one off.. I should really get rid of that pic as the actual production runs of it look so so much better... If you look at the rundown of projectors I am doing plates for you will note the form factors are all unique in there own way... some need venting holes on the bottom of the plate... many have contour bottoms... the NEC chassis for instance if you look at the plate closely you will note that it is not symetrical like the X1... You will see the pic for that chassis on a prior page...even though a Y shape the distances between each hole location is different and the top hole is skewed inches from center... I also find that using swinging arms with shims and slots would cost dramatically less to produce as they could just get punched out... they lack esthetics..ergonomics... and they do not function like a custom piece... and using regular paint on metal.. it just doesnt look as good as powder coating... it does not have the strength or durability of powder coating... and since I make or will be making all or most of the popular brands of projector mounts in the future... one simply has to twist of the plate and screw in the new one... This is the primary only reason I have any concern of the color.... If I stick with one for all, or just a couple... then the projector plate will always match when upgrading etc.. For a while I was looking at black annodizing a few to see but there is still heat marks at the weld and not sure how these would cover with annodizing..
Night... Wow the picture posted ..... we've come a long way since that first one guys. I sometimes wonder when twisting and measuring gap spaces to assemble for powder coating.. then having to dissassembe post powder coating if it all worthwhile to powder coat the cnc knee joint pieces and all the nuts... looking at that pic on the first one made... affirms that it is...
One of the biggest misconceptions I get in email all the time...
1) that the steel used in the knee joint is a pipe... it is solid steel with a PSI strength of about 3500 lbs.. You cannot run wiring through it.. and with that PSI rating.. no worries about holding onto a 7 lb projector.. As prior mentioned one guy is using tri pod parts on the mount design.. this is meant for camera's weighing less than 2lbs..
2) Do I have to crank the three screws tight ,, that go into the projector... no there is plenty of thread on the screws.. it is a brass insert in plastic... and you do not want to pull the brass insert from the plastic by over tightening..
Thanks for the good questions and comments...
John... got the email.. sent response... Thanks
DallasTom 12-09-03, 10:51 AM Mandarax, you have a pm
You are the man, I love my mount and you were helpful when I emailed you, I ended up taking the projector down and rescrewing in those screws and now they fit perfect. Also I said I would take pics and here they are:
mandarax 12-10-03, 12:46 AM Dallas ... you need to email me .... robert@digital-visions.ca
while the second one is in transit now...

mandarax 12-10-03, 01:21 PM I am getting emails quering when these will be available...
They have been completed for a couple of weeks....
Here is a cute little story for you... I was trying out different coatings and colors for a non X1 projector mount design.... I had one of them on the table this morning... Had my ten year old daughter give me her assessment... she states....." I really like the finish,, but I think it is a bit on the light side and way too reflective for that projector which spills alot of light through the rear,,, try it in black and make it less reflective.." I just look at her... cant believe what I just heard ... scratch my head... and say ... ok sounds right to me boss... she has this innocent little smile walks away and gathers her stuff for school...
Some stats
The person who started DaLite screen company almost 100 years ago was actually a woman...I only have sold direct to a woman this year on three occasions... No women have posted on this long thread... Only a few women showed up at the shootout ..with thier husbands and took off shopping shortly after commencing.. Where are all the women in HT???
I think my daughter could easily take over the business some day... but these stats would suggest that she would not be interested in it at all when she grows up... Of the most successful companies that exist in North America ,,, the family owned and or ones with participating family members are statistically the most successful.

mandarax 12-11-03, 01:43 PM Ok as of today... make that 4 occasions that I sold direct to a woman..

Robert, what is the status for your Panny 300 design. I am interested in a one of those mounts when they are available.
mandarax 12-11-03, 10:06 PM gtv... I was of the understanding that the 300 was being discontinued and wanted to ensure the 500 had the same form factor... Hope you understand... I cant make one offs... Have to take the risk of making a couple of hundred,,,and be fairly confident that they will sell ...and fast.
Panasonic Canada .... I just won't work with these people... there is a few good people their but their policies are not cohesive to my way of running a business.. they are actually privately held... The easiest thing for me to do is to just move to the USA... something I am contemplating at some time
It just is so much easier to business there and at times I wonder how much better I could serve my customers if I was actually there permanent.. Thats for everything but the mounts tho... as this is one of the best areas in the world to make these up...
Robert..
Robert,
Recieved the X1 Mount - and all I can say is WOW.
Thanks for the hard work that went into this.
mandarax 12-12-03, 01:29 AM Thanks jmaino...
I think I may be working a bit too hard ... Take a look at the pic...
Thats me with my toolkit...
mandarax 12-12-03, 01:50 AM Here is a pic of a NEC MOUNT.. Was fooling about with some different finishes and I like this hammered metal look...
Tell me what you think... Its a digital camera with a flash so the coating does not look that shiny... Sometimes its hard getting a digital vision that depicts an accurate image... but it looks cool.. You will see from what I mentioned earlier about not making a plate like others do and that the slot idea wouldnt work.... plus it would look cheap..
see the tiers... the plate is not symetrical... way more stuff happenin with this plate...
Robert
mandarax 12-12-03, 07:28 PM Will try and post better pics of the black hammer next week...
Robert
mandarax 12-13-03, 04:25 PM Its been downloaded 33 times ...so I know your out there ... I guess being downloaded is better than nothing...
mandarax 12-15-03, 12:18 AM up to 46 and still not a peep
mandarax 12-15-03, 01:21 PM There is now 32 X1 mounts left from batch 8...
Congrats to the USA on getting Saddam...
Robert...
jdonigan 12-15-03, 02:18 PM Robert,
I'll let you know when my mount arrives.
jagmosi 12-15-03, 10:35 PM Functional, inconspicuous, and very well engineered - Thanks :)
adopted 12-16-03, 12:12 AM Sweet, got my mount today, quite excited so I put it together to see what I was working with hehe, unfortunately wont have time for a few days to mount it up and test out.
I'm a little confused by what that item that look like a drill bit was.
mandarax 12-16-03, 01:07 AM adopted...
Don't be confused. That drill bit is a driver bit for the screws that go into the ceiling/wall plate. The allen wrench supplied goes into the stainless steel bolt.. I hate looking for tools and stuff myself so I just include it all in the hardware kit.
You will note that they are Robertson heads.... just in case you dont have the bit...
Thanks for the comments....
mandarax, finally got around to putting up the new mount, and it is just beautiful!! thanks again for all your hard work on putting out this great product!!!!

mandarax 12-16-03, 04:45 PM NizZ8 ..

mandarax 12-17-03, 09:51 PM Guess what ... Run 9 is started...
Thanks for all the orders for X1 run 8 ... still have about 20 left... and some of the NEC's are starting to leave the building ...
Robert
grdnshmwy 12-18-03, 01:24 PM Looks good ..... Iam just getting started here.. Looks like tons to learn on projectors. I got a infocus 4800 gift from the wife (great gal) again thanks.. I will be looking into getting one.. Thanks Ross
mandarax 12-18-03, 01:28 PM Ross
What a wif... she obviously just bought it to get at my mount tho..
grdnshmwy 12-18-03, 01:53 PM Ha, Ha , I do belive you are giving yourself a LITTLE to much credit........
jdonigan 12-18-03, 10:09 PM Robert,
Got my mount. It was very well packed and my wife has already commented on how nice it looks.
Thanks!
mandarax 12-19-03, 09:43 AM Ross ...
I guess you may be right... but it is a true fact that women do seem to like it.... I have cracked off a few other ideas and prototype styles due to the high cost of making this particular style...and it never fails,,women always pick this design over anything else I have conjured up.. It is also one of the easiest to assemble... I can now take the pieces,,, and for any orientation have everything lined up, locked down into position, screw the plate into the projector.. all in 22 seconds.. The locking nuts for horizontal and diagonal adjustments are a size just perfect for easy hand turning.... to lock everything down into position.
There is definitely some guys that have to make the hard sell to the wif... especially when the HT experience will be on one of the main rooms and not a basement it seems... Whenever messing with a main floor room for HT my experience has been that some women have an idea of this huge looking industrial looking monstrosity hanging in the main floor and esthetically making her home looking like a warehouse, or compromising the well manicured home feel of the room... The guys that seem to get the wif sale are the ones that get at least partial involvement in the process.... having showed pics of what the room will look like.....take out the big rptv... have an attractive looking video piece just over the size of a calculater hanging unobtrusively on the ceiling... all swamp snake looking wires neatly tucked away.. some even will go the goo screen coating route and goo the entire wall available ( so no screen ) ....some will go further and show in wall speakers... all of a sudden guys find that the wif gets all excited and is picking up furniture and other accessories for the room and its all guns blazing to get it all finished .... Not sure why more guys dont get the wif involved.. Pictures of rooms completed make a great selling tool for the wif... I've had guys email me and state that the pics of some of the rooms were an instant sell.... Once they can imagine what the esthetics can be for a room... they quickly adapt to the idea... sale is made..lights out... projector on... cold beers served in frosty mugs with popcorn kickin back and enjoying the experience with family and friends.
But then there are certainly those lucky guys like Ross that actually have the wif buy a projector...
One thing I have noticed recently is that some of the people I am selling to are people that I met on the street... my bank teller just purchased a projector for her husband... I also just sold a complete system to a vacuum cleaner salesperson who was doing some door to door... so I am getting a bit concerned that I am turning into an "Amway type clone".... it does concern me... as I do not wish to start drawing circles on a board...but I don't seem to be able to stop.. If anyone knows a way to get some of this passion out of my system to tone me down a bit then please advise....
Robert
grdnshmwy 12-19-03, 12:20 PM Robert, Do not worry. Sounds like You are doing what you like and enjoy. you are passionate about this and people can see that and respond to this So kudos to ya.... Besides you have not started selling soap and audio tapes yet...... Ha,Ha Yes it does help if the wife is into H/T also. Ross
yhpm btw.
just checking up
suburbanviking 12-20-03, 08:26 PM I just purchased this mount from Robert and it is a great piece of work. Unfortunately (for me), the room I am mounting my X1 in has custom soffet work that prevents me from using the mount.
I am offering this mount including 2nd day shipping for $75. That is less than what I paid and you won't have to wait for customs. You can be enjoying this piece of work before Christmas.
Robert did a great job and includes hardware and tools (allen wrench and bit) with the mount. I can send digital pix of the entire package. I will ship 2nd day UPS after payment.
Inquiries to zr1viking@adelphia.net
Seasons Greetings all!
mandarax 12-21-03, 08:58 PM I will be away starting next Saturday ... for a few days getting some R&R..with the kiddies... So Please try and get orders in early... as I will be also going to CES... one week after return for a few days... Have to start growing my side burns...and pick out my Viva Las Vegas shirt...
If I don't get a chance to get back here I will be checking emails etc... robert@digital-visions.ca Gotta say thanks to everyone that support this effort and Happy Holidays..... Getting to know alot of you on this project this year was a delight, and a lot of fun.. Thanks to AVS for allowing me to do this and make this project available to go to people in every state in the USA except Alaska.... People in the USA have been the most responsive, appreciative,, always giving great feedback,,, gracious thankyou's and pics of their instalations, it was overwhelming and incredulous to me... Also people supporting this in every province in Canada... Almost every European country... Australia ... New Zealand... Singapore... All without one shred of advertising... Makes it easier to keep striving for perfection in the product to make it possible to continue.. Don't know how to properly thank all those that supported the effort....by either purchasing, or giving feedback,,, emailing .. telling friends...etc.. but know this ... I am extremely grateful...
At this time of year it is great sharing the HT experience with friends and family as we watch football games,,, xmas specials,,, new dvds.. xmas and newyears parties. Have a great holiday and again THANKS..
Robert
mandarax 12-23-03, 09:05 AM Run 8 is finito.... Since I had all the machined parts complete and ceiling mounts cut and welded .... I did up another 45... just in case there is some X1's received as xmas presents..They are all complete...
Robert
Louse76 12-23-03, 09:16 AM I'm sure you will be getting many orders from the guys that are getting or have recently gotten their X1's finally from DELL! Best of luck and happy holidays!
And let me just say that I wish I would have thought twice about making my own mount and gotten Mandarax's! If you have a tendency to screw up things like I do, SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE AND GET THIS MOUNT!! :D
jdonigan 12-23-03, 12:46 PM Robert, got my X1 installed. Everything worked out right on the money.
I nailed the screen position.
(Pictures will follow.) Thanks, and Merry Christmas to all!
mandarax 12-24-03, 02:06 PM Louse76... thanks for the endorsement... its amazing what word of mouth and how it spreads can do... over 900 for the X1... Hopefully if the other models catch on like the X1 I can keep the price where it is at and also get to a point where I can become a sponser some day. Hopefully Infocus will get back on track with deliveries here in Canada as well... Amazingly enough every projector company except Infocus delivered as promised before xmas,,,
Just got my demo unit for the 2HD ...or the Z2 ....this second.. So if I get enough time before I take off will be trying to do the mods to the Cad Drawings... and get that going before the CES show.. and training session at Vutec later on.... won't be hooking it up and will be getting rid of it as soon as the cad drawings are complete... also have the Canuck Shootout event coming up in February... So its going to be a horrid schedule for a while...
jdonigan..... good to hear instal went in with precision and look forward to seeing your pics..
If anyone is going to CES early and wants to go for a round of golf on one of the desert courses with another member and I ...probably on the Wednesday before ... give me an email... robert@digital-visions.ca
No worries we arent that good and definitely not that serious about the game..
Again THANKS ... and HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Robert
adopted 12-27-03, 01:46 AM Installed it this Saturday works great except its got this horrible shaking problem, I got everything nice and tight but it just shakes, lookin at any static picture or text on the screen and you easily see it moves back and fourth so fast it makes your head hurt.
Anyone got any ideas?
Edit: Robert what size are the screws that go into the PJ? (length, head size) I think I need to get a replacement one and was hoping I could hop on down to the local hardware store, someone went a little gun crazy and stripped one of the screws a little.
adopted 12-27-03, 04:12 PM Hmm, base is as solid as can be, it all just comes down to the tip of the 8" bar it just shakes no matter how its tightened and worse yet after about an hour use the bulb begins to flicker from the movement.
I'm thinkin maybe I could stabilze the front if it wasn't stickin out so far, and the only idea that comes to mind is a piece of board behind the base with a hole drilled out for the 8" threaded part to grip onto. I mean it looks like theres another half inch at least of thread so that other bolt can still be locked in.
mandarax 12-29-03, 07:12 PM Came back a couple of days early... no snow.. no ice... just rain... but can start shipping again tomorrow AM..
Adopted... give me an email... something doesnt sound right...
robert@digital-visions.ca
I will try and get to all the emails after I unpack...
Robert
mandarax 01-01-04, 05:58 PM Just a reminder ... I will be gone for CES starting on Tuesday ... so will not be back till the following Monday... If you need to get one of these out try and get it settled before Tuesday..
Robert
Mandarax,
I'm using one of your X1 mounts and it's working pretty well. Although I wish I had asked for the short extension, but I'm making do with the regular one.
But I did have a question. Anyone else using this mount can pipe in as well. Although I hand tighten the lock nuts on both ends (to the projector and to the ceiling), it does not seem very tight and my projector swivels left and right when I touch it. The rods are tight to the nuts on each plate as I had to back them off to get the knee joint aligned correctly. Is there a way to help my projector stay "locked" into position?
mystery 01-02-04, 07:51 PM Gambit,
I too have Mandarax's X-1 mount and mine, although seemingly tight as well, also moves. I am not worried about this as I understand that this is part of the genius of the design of the parts. I have no worries of it falling down. I do appreciate the ability to make ever so slight adjustments in whatever direction necessary, without having to get out a wrench and back off a bit on the nuts. The projector's position generally holds in place after alignment.
I hope I understood your dilemma properly and have been able to help.
Wayne.
Although I hand tighten the lock nuts on both ends (to the projector and to the ceiling), it does not seem very tight and my projector swivels left and right when I touch it.
Use a wrench to tighten the lock nut against the welded-to-plate nut. Use a second wrench to hold the welded-to-plate nut. Cover the wrneches with tape so you dont scratch anything.
mandarax 01-03-04, 02:50 PM Gambit..
Use the supplied allen wrench ... hold the nut with an adjustable and crank it tight with an allen wrench... The supplied locknut is lined with nylon...
to lock it in place... you will have to crank it the first time to cut through the nylon..
If you received one prior to run 8... the powder coating can make it a bit slik however if you tighten it it will not move ... But if you wish you can also lightly sand the inside of the cnc machined bolt.. you do not see it...so it will not matter...
I do not get any slippage at all with the lock nuts just hand turned... If you do as stated prior just use an adjustable to tighten ..but it should not wiggle... at all.. As bholia stated you can use some sort of masking over the finish to not scratch the pristine powder coat finish... When I get them back from powder coating I generally use material to cover it so it does not scratch...
If it is swiveling left and right that means that the lock nut on the projector plate needs to be tighted ....
Its a 5/8 nut that is locking to the welded 5/8 nut ... so trust me ... it will not move once tightened..
THanks for assisting guys..
Mystery ... have you signed up yet for my shootout???
I may be getting another address in the USA whilst gone... Dont want CES trip to be all fun and games..
Robert
Thanks for the replies. It's not the nut on the knee joint, but the one by the projector or the ceiling plate. I wasn't sure whether I should ratchet down the lock nuts with a wrench, but guess I'll try that carefully and lightly.
It stays in place well enough wherever I set it to, but if I touch the projector (to power it off for example), it will swivel left/right and be out of position.
mandarax 01-03-04, 08:01 PM Gambit...
Sorry ... yes you also have a horizontal adjustment on that nut as well... you really do not have to tighten it that much... again I only hand turn it tight... but I also have strong fingers... The whole purpose of the extra lock nuts is for horizontal, diagonal adjustment... again it is a significant size lock nut...for that little projector it can handle 500 times that load and stress....
adopted 01-04-04, 03:55 AM Sorry for no email mandrax, been busy, just barely got a few minutes to check for replies for my SOS last year hehe. I've since rigged it in a way to keep my Component cables with a bit of stress to compensate for the shaking and attached a piece of wood to the surrounding studs and attached your mount to that. The shaking is still very lightly noticable but not as bad, this is good for now and theres been no more flickering. Haven't a bit big enough to drill to allow the 8" to sink into. I'll still try and shoot you an email though.
mandarax 01-04-04, 01:20 PM Thanks adopted ... received your email and responded...
I will be returning on the 13th of January... so apologize in advance for not getting back to people during my tenure at CES...
All orders received will be shipped out on Monday...January 5th... I prepackaged another 19 mounts so these will be shipped on a fifo basis upon my return..
Robert
mandarax 01-05-04, 11:19 PM Wow 15 of the 19 went out today.. I have 23 left in total and have someone picking up another run on Thursday so it will be no problem..
Robert
DallasTom 01-07-04, 01:41 PM Robert you have a PM, thanks.
Dallastom
BigMatza 01-08-04, 11:47 AM Robert, are you backlogged, or has your server been dropping incoming e-mails? I've sent you 3 e-mails over 10 days and haven't gotten a response.
You seem to be responding to others regularly (I hope it wasn't something I said :)) Can I just PM you my order and do it that way?
BTW, for others who are curious, what would you say is the "ordering deadline" to have a mount by Superbowl Sunday (Feb. 1st)?
Peace.
BM
P.S. Woohoo! 700 posts!
Mandarax,
Still loving my batch 8 mount.. thanks again! :).

mandarax 01-13-04, 10:35 AM Sorry for the delay.... I was at CES show in Vegas as mentioned earlier.
Some news on the show relative to the Infocus chassis... Good news for me is that the chassis has not been revised on the X2... The faroudja chipset is gone but the lumens are up... guess depending on your situation this could be good or bad... The Screenplay 4805 is now native 16:9 and still utilizes the same chassis as the X1... which is good news..
Dallas Tom... have responeded to your PM..
BigMatza.... I did answer all emails before I left and shipped every order before leaving even the ones that were received the day before.. It would be no problem shipping....
I have 167 emails to answer so I apologize for any delay. I will be packaging all the orders on a FIFO basis today.... and will hopefully get them all out today... It does become necessary at times to shotgun a venue like CES....
There is now an address set up in the USA and will be utilizing this to expedite future orders if it makes sense to do so... I am thinking that it may be utilized to serve the Western USA states and may save a day in shipping time... I also have a USA telephone number now as well which may help but more to facilitate other type of business other than mounts.
Sorry again if you did not get a response... or it takes a day or two to respond... I did not expect that kind of backlog in just a few days... and again in the short time tenure I will be shipping first on orders and responding to emails post getting everything out the door... Thankyou for your patience...
Robert
mandarax 01-14-04, 10:52 PM Phew ... all outstanding orders while I was gone and up to earlier today are now with Fedex..
Robert
mandarax 01-14-04, 11:56 PM Sorry for the typo on the 4805... I typed that the 4805 was "not" native 16:9 instead of "now"...
Sorry for any confusion....
Robert
Hairballs 01-18-04, 12:39 AM Sorry again if you did not get a response... or it takes a day or two to respond...
does this mean if you did not receive a response, the order did not go thru?
how long does it usually take for an order to get to CA?
since you dont seem to be responding to pms and the email linked to your paypal account doesnt seem to work for me, maybe you could answer my questions here. thanks for your time.

mandarax 01-19-04, 09:15 AM Paul...
I did respond to your PM.. email did not state which Paul you were... had orders from 3 "Pauls"... mount was sent via fedex the day after order was placed... I do not have the ability to cross reference a persons handle on AVS to their email address... orders ship same day or next day depending on what time they arrive... The usual time frame for an order to get to CA is 4 days... depending on which hub it goes through in the USA.. Over 1300 have been sent,,, zero have been held...
Robert
mandarax 01-19-04, 09:22 AM Paul..
Copy of PM sent to you ..
Paul...
I had three orders from someone named Paul... all have been shipped so please advise last name and send an email..

I received my mount in the mail today.
I can't get all three screws to connect the triangle to the X1.
One of them seems to be slightly off.
Is anyone else having this problem with the recent batch, or is it
just me?

Yep I had the same issue with my mount - had to start each screw off and then tighten one by one.
I hope this doesn't happen with my replacement PJ :(
Other than that the mount rocks! :)

i just want to be sure my order went through, thats all.
4 days huh, so if all goes well, i should be gettin it on the 20th or 21st.
-paul
mandarax 01-20-04, 07:22 AM Sorry Paul ... thats the only PM I received... Thanks for stating you did receive my PM response tho... Some may have thought from your first post that I did not respond to your PM.. The email is the same as the one posted here robert@digital-visions.ca...
If you can start each one of the screws... it is not off... the tolerance is tight.. therefore if it tightened misaligned it will stay misaligned.. Best way as mentioned is to start each of the screws and then tighten.. I could make the holes slightly bigger but the vast majority prefer the tight tolerance..
There is over 1300 of these out there now...
Robert
pochoboy 01-22-04, 12:24 AM Mandarax,
check your email, my Paypal payment should be there,
makes me Paul #4 that ordered this mount within a week or so.
Mandarax,
I'm ready to retire my X1 to another room. I bought the 4.5" drop mount from you,
would you sell just the longer shaft to make a 10" drop (to clear a ceiling fan)?
mandarax 01-22-04, 08:27 PM Corba ...
Sure ...no problem.. send me an email.. robert@digital-visions.ca
Paul ... you are actually now #6... ..got it...
Extentions will be cut and tapered tomorrow for those who have extention orders...

mandarax 01-25-04, 07:37 PM Jenning / X1 men... your mount has just left Sacramento ... was shipped quite some time ago..256982810003105 tracking with Fedex..
mandarax 01-28-04, 08:50 AM Run 10 is just about finito...
Should be ok as run 11 is almost finished..
Wow a lot of people must be getting ready for Super Bowl...
Robert
mandarax 01-28-04, 08:54 AM I was thinking of cnc laser cutting my initials for my company that does these up "DV" into the projector plates... What do you guys think... ?? It wouldnt be that big..
Give me your thoughts on this ...
Robert
mystery 01-28-04, 09:14 AM Absolutely. You've done all this work. Why not advertise? I think it will add a finishing touch to an already professional look.
mandarax 01-28-04, 02:45 PM heh mystery...
thanks ... on the next run .. it be done...
Was in today to do some other mods....and the Z2 ... 2HD sample plate will be finished tomorrow...
Robert
Hate to be a bother, and it's been asked before, but when might you get to Panasonic projectors?
mandarax 01-29-04, 09:29 AM whom...
I do not have a Pansonic 500 to verify drawings.... With the Z2 I made up one drawing based on the drawings from Sanyo... I spent 7 hours modifying the Cad Drawing I made for the mounting plate based on incorrect info... Would have been a disaster...
Panasonic Canada is privately held... they have some wierd ideas and like to pass that on to others ... since most of my sales are in the USA this creates a quandary for me ....re: their price structure is vastly different than the USA market.... this holds true for a number of manufacturing companies that have distribution in Canada that believe that they should take the bulk of any margin .... I could site examples where the price is actually double for the exact same product.... I stay clear of these products due to the fact that most people I deal with are extremely savvy when it comes to price... many would get the impression that if one product price is out of line with reality...that it is in fact my company that is doing the gouging and would question the entire product line...
The mount products designed and made are more of a service... especially with the erosion of the value of the US dollar in the past year...
There is a US based business established and would prefer to keep the two entities seperate.... this may revise the product offerings dramatically.
Sorry about the long story but it explains why the offering for that model has not come to fruition as of yet....
... I also have to be fairly confident that there will be a quantity run worthy of doing these up... I had 200 NEC chassis mounts that arent moving too quickly due mostly as a result of people having to wait protracted amounts of time for the LT240K..just under 100 left So 6 grand is sitting there collecting dust..... I have to pay my suppliers regardless if they sell or not...
These products are only a small part of what I do... But I am trying to get enough of them going daily to hold the price and to get someone hired to take care of the procurement, packaging, prep, and all the email inquiries... and specials... ... at some point I am going to have to financially justify the activity.. I am committed to the activity being successful due to the enjoyment I get from it.. All the positive feedback I get daily keeps the wind in my sails and pumps me up for making some other product offerings that will be best quality, best manufacturing techniques, and an incredulous price.....
Oh yeah and to answer your question... :) I will be contacting a customer this week and offering a free mount to him for using the chassis... so it will be up to his schedule... will advise..
Robert
mandarax 01-30-04, 12:05 AM Picked up the Z2 sample plate on thursday ... and they are being cnc laser for pick up today... Will try and get some pics out before the end of the weekend... I was originally going to do a shape of a 2.... but decided to shape the plate the same as the bottom of the projector... The Z2 has vent holes at the bottom and wanted to keep these intact so the projector could breath properly...
Robert
mandarax 01-31-04, 01:50 PM Here is a pic of the Z2 projector mounting plate only..
You can see why I had to scrap the idea of shaping it into a 2 ...Instead I shaped it the same as the footprint...
I had to incorporate the vent holes.. so it could breath properly...
Note this is only a pic of the bare metal plate... that goes into the projector . It has not been coated yet... and the other pieces that make up the mount are not included in the picture...

mandarax 01-31-04, 01:58 PM I took the plunge and had the cnc laser cutter pump out a plate with the revised look....IE.. initialized..
Here is a pic of it..
For those wondering about the hole alignment.... check it out..
I also get some inquiries "Are these are just made up in my garage...
I think the initialization will actually dispell this notion..
Happy with the way these turned out ... What do you think??
Robert
mandarax 02-01-04, 11:29 AM From what I saw at CES the chassis of the 4805 will fit this mount..
Robert
mandarax 02-02-04, 07:44 PM Hope everyone enjoyed their setups for Superbowl.... I had a record amount of these go out two weeks before the superbowl...
The X1 still seems to be selling like hotcakes.. Should get a timeline on when the axe is going to drop on this version.. If I find out anything concrete I will post it here..
Robert
mandarax 02-03-04, 07:34 PM Since it has been downloaded 45 times now ... What do you guys think of the "DV" cnc cut into plate??
Just wanted to add another post of praise for Robert's work. I ordered an X1 mount with a custom drop from him about ten days before the Superbowl and he had it shipped five days later. Too bad FedEx dropped the ball and sat on it for a couple of days but Robert certainly did his part. Got it today. Haven't installed it yet but it looks sharp.
Oh, and the DV cut looks nice. You should add it to the next batch.
mandarax 02-03-04, 09:44 PM Thanks James...
Specials do take a bit more time...I have had some pretty weird ones where I couldnt find a box that wasnt going to cost more than the mount to ship... Yours was not in this category.. I had an unbelievable drop a month ago and we used two mounting plates... acted like a vise... Having the ceiling/wall plate with the hex hole cnc cut in the middle has made for some interesting options... and unbelievable strength..... I actually have some made up for fixturing and tooling and even for painting up samples for new stuff.. Anyway Sorry about Fedex ... we had a weird weather week last week and they got backed up a bit.. I personally drop them off at the depot and they get custom cleared on the spot.. Pre clearance always ensures a quicker turn around... Still don't know what happened as some others that were shipped the same day went out promptly... May be due to the box... they are accustomed to my standard boxes and they normally process the customs on the spot and put it on the belt..
lol.. the plates are already cut with the DV in it for the next batch ... Just not sure how I am going to break the news that someone has to pay for the cut.. lol... I am trying to keep the volume up to accomodate the changes by introducing other plates and therefore keep the costs down and make many of the popular models where one may switch out the plate on an upgrade.... will see how the Z2 ones go... I really have to get to the point where it can left for others to do the logistics and packaging etc.. I can't have my primary HT business bleed too much for fun doing this stuff.
Its been a good run so far guys... Every state in the USA... less Alaska...(I got withing an hours drive tho) and every province in Canada including Nunavut in less than 3 months...then Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Singapore, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Mexico, since then... All mostly through word of mouth.... simply amazing... No worries it still feels good so I am going to go out with all laser guns blazing...
I actually watched the Infocus plates all get cut on the cnc laser machine while I was in testing the drawings and finalizing the Z2 plate... I should get a video of them getting cnc laser cut so the guys that havent seen the process can witness it...very cool.. about 15,000 to 20,000 sq ft is devoted to each cnc laser cutter.
pochoboy 02-05-04, 07:20 PM Mandarax,
just wanted to let you know I got it here in Hawaii, thanks for the quick work. It's a nice mount, simple lookin, yet more than enough to hang the X1. I've yet to put it up, but it's got everything in there to mount it. Everything!
mandarax 02-07-04, 04:55 PM Thanks pocho.. wish I was able to fit in the box and go with the mount.. it has been brutally cold here since CES ... I know its a bit nuts to include the allen wrench and the driver bit for the ceiling/wall plate ... I just know myself that all the common sizes of these suckers are lost or have gone astray when I need em... Alot of guys will just throw the tools supplied back into the hardware pouch and throw it in the carrying case..
Robert
mandarax 02-09-04, 09:10 PM My new Z2 design outsold the X1 this week guys...
Robert
mandarax 02-10-04, 09:15 AM What do you guys think of the demise of the X1... ??
The mount will fit the X2...and the screenplay 4805...
But would you prefer the extra lumens of the X2 over losing the faroudja DCDi...... and do you think the aproximately 50% hike in price is worth it on the Screenplay 4805...
Would like to hear what you think.... I have to make a few hundred mounts at a time to keep the cost down... and I am curious what your thinking is on the eminent X1 demise and its replacements..
Robert
Fkl0ster 02-10-04, 10:06 AM I just got back home with my DIY mount for the X1. cost me ~$14 US where I live:
http://img1.tapuz.co.il/forums/27333569.jpg
I designed the thing by myself, and will install the X1 on it in a few days...
I can't wait!
mandarax 02-10-04, 01:21 PM heh if you are happy with that ... all the best to you...
Robert
mandarax:
Still have mounts available? I'm putting mine in a basement with a drop ceiling. The drop ceiling is very close to the rafters.
In this case would I normally install the x1 or 2 as close to the ceiling as possible?
Mike
mandarax 02-10-04, 04:41 PM Yep
They are still available...
You still orient to where your screen should be... eye level about 1/3 to 1/2 way up the screen is ideal when you are sitting ...everyones seating is a bit different..
Drop ceilings are easy... just attach bridging between the joists and attach to the bridging.. keep the height of the bridging the desired height.. and you is golden.... so you will have the ceiling plate inside the drop ceiling.. showing..
Robert
mandarax 02-14-04, 11:10 AM The Z2 mount outsold the X1 mount two weeks in a row..

mandarax 02-15-04, 02:02 PM Thanks Tom ...
Sorry about the PM overflow... with the shootout and these mounts it seems to fill up every day.. I received your email and have replied..
Robert
mandarax 02-20-04, 01:11 PM Wow ... this thread seems to going quiet...
The latest batch with the initials is going to be complete next week..
I am no longer going to offer the mount in grey... everything is going to be black... I have chosen the powder coat finish... Black Satin Polyester... It is the exact same finish used on the HUmmer 2 rocker panel from the same company that does the Hummer 2 rocker panel...
The price will be going up to accomodate the extra laser cutting... but will do that on the next batch..
Robert
mandarax 02-21-04, 04:36 PM Will have pics of the mount in black some time next week...
Robert
mandarax 02-22-04, 02:24 PM Picked up the electroplated unit and I didnt like it as much as the Powder Coating... Was not as tough.. it was less work to me to do as it eliminated the assembly and disassemply required by powder coating but it just does not look as good ... or is it anywhere as durable..
Robert
mandarax 02-27-04, 12:01 PM All the orders for this latest batch were shipped out this morning... There was 240 in the batch so there is a lot left..
I am definitely sticking with the black.. It looks too cool with everything black and the hardware covered.. It will also make it much easier to swap plates... if upgrading... The black satin has a perfect sheen.. and is tough as nails..
I am definitely going to go with the black snap caps for the hardware on the ceiling plate and also with the black T Handles... for the knee joint.. It just looks too cool like this ... will release the next few like this to get some reaction to it... then will have to evaluate what the price is going to be set at to pay for the extra cost of handles , snap caps,
I will be too busy to take pics... Have to make 3D glasses for kids movie night as I ordered 75 pair and movie night is tonight and the kids don't have their glasses.. anyone know how to make these up efficiently or where I can get a pattern email me robert@digital-visions.ca .. What a way to spend the day... ..
Still using paypal as one of the payment options... One of the buds from AVS just bought one of the newest black ones and was one of the original paypal employees.. I slammed paypal pretty bad when starting to offer these... but I have to say... even though the charges (it is a business paypal account and they get a percentage of "my pie") are now over the merchant fee... I have to say that I have not had a glitch, the performance has been good.. people like using it.. so I retract my earliest comments about the service.. I still think the internal people on the support side need more effective training... but I truly have not had to place a call to anyone in over 9 months.. So anyway .. its genuine.. it has been a good, efficient, fast, effective service..
Fedex has been stellar as well.. 1740 shipments two screwups... they actually charge quite a bit more than other services but given the track record I am a bit scared to make a change...
Thanks for the orders...emails..
Robert
OK, I gave up reading on page 17. The big question is: is there a mount for the 300?
