THANK YOU MANDARAX! I finally installed the mount. It was EASY.

DrewB ...

I will be doing the BenQ line next... I try and align the releases to the products endorsed.. Loved the 8710 and also the 7800 so they are next on the list.. There is a long tedious explanation about the Panasonic product and in the interest of brevity won't get into it other than to say I put more of a priority on the release for a product that has a volume potential to make it viable at the price I am charging for this product.

Nutmeg.. thanks .. I have one guy just email me this week and it took him 4 minutes.. With the black T handles on the knee joint you won't even need to use an adjustable to hold the nyloc nut that the T handle replaces. Will have some pics when I get some time..

Hey Robert. I got an X1 mount from you about a year ago and I realized I never came back to this thread to say thanks and to post a pic of my installation.

It works great!

Thanks for the kind words..hwj.. Those older units may become collectors items... That was a longer drop... At the beginning I had more long drops then later on I had more short drops... Lots of changes in one year...

Thanks for the pic ... I love seeing my babies holding your toys..

here is some rough lookin pics of the mount with latest changes..

Here it is in black satin powder coat... you will note that the DV.. is cnc laser cut right into the plate.. There is Black snap caps covering the screws going into the ceiling/wall plate.. and the black T handle for the knee joint which makes it even easier as you just hold with your hand to adjust.. as you do for the horizontal adjustment with the nuts on the cnc machined knee joint pieces..

here is a pic showing side to side.. No one will have it this extreme but just for demonstrating..

Those are the snap caps with the hardware that goes into the ceiling plate.. so you do not see the screws..

You can also see the T handle in the pic at the knee joint..

here is a pic showing ceiling with a vertical adjustment..

of course one can change the orientation any number of degrees to get a combination that suits the adjustment required..

The horizontal adjustment is done seperately on either the ceiling plate with the lock nut or on the projector plate with the lock nut..

Once that is dialed in then you just adjust the knee joint in whatever orientation is desired..

Pics get really rough in this format and when a digital camera attempts to do black..

I went back a few pages in the thread, but did not find the price of the X1 mount.

Can you post it here or PM me?

I have kept the price at 83.00 for now ...that includes shipping via Fedex.. and all the latest changes... I am going to have to take at a revision soon as some of the changes are costing me quite a bit more money.... I am attempting to keep everything the same...and until I get a firm supplier from a USA manufacturing company for the hardware revisions it will be difficult to assess what the price will jump to... I also have not had a huge response here as to whether the T handles are preferable or not to the nyloc nut.. On the ones that have already gone out people love it .. I certainly think it is the way to go.... Funny while writing this the package from the USA manufacturing company just got dropped off for the T handles and as expected the quality is exponential to what I can get from the suppliers ... many of them have gone with hardware made in China.. it is cheaper but also not as good..

or if I drop some of the tool pieces like the allen wrench and driver bit for the the screws..

Negotiating with UPS instead of Fedex as well as the new rates for 2004 also went up... the machining rate went up, So quite a few things in limbo.. and during the limbo time... I do not want to increase the price only to take action to reduce it later... or have another increase shortly thereafter.. Hope this explains what is going on...

Will be revising T handles to the USA manufacturer today... more threads, brass inserts, no cavities, size meshes with the size of the knee joint.

The price will remain as stated on the first post..83.00 until I officially revise it.

Classy look to the new mount Rob!

I think the T handle is a great idea. No fumbling for tools and wishing you had three hands. Well, three hands would be helpful in other endeavors. :)

The black is really sharp. I still prefer the gray for the X1 though. Blends in nicely but I'd take the black in a minute if it was the only color.

Looking forward to your shootout in April. Curious about these Carada screens too. Getting good reviews over on the Screens forum.

If you have to raise the price of the revised mount then do it. Compared with the hilarious dinosaurs that the manufacturers sell and their insane prices, I think you have a fair bit of wiggle room on what you ask.

Keep up the good work!!

Wayne.

Thanks Wayne...

I try and keep the cost down as much as possible... 27 out of 27 people seeing the black side by side to the grey ... all choose the black.. probably the other changes with the company initials cnc laser cut into the plate and the T handles and snap caps have something to do with it but thats the verdict so far seeing it live...

I may just have to not include the allen wrench and two complete options for attaching the ceiling/wall plate.. Unfortunately when I see something I like .. thats what I go for no matter what the cost... I made a final decision on the T handle yesterday... much better than the one posted in the pic.. made in Italy... brass insert...threads all the way ... no cavity in the handle..exact size diameter as the cnc knee joint.. way better mould and the parent company is a USA company.. so I get to put at least a tiny piece of italian styling on the piece as well. Can't say enough about the rep in the USA.. and they will actually be bought in the USA.. unfortunately that means due to them being manufactured in Italy Duty and Brokerage apply.. Again I just have to figure a way to make it work.... I set out to make it at this cost... If I can get a better rate at UPS this may help... will keep you posted ...

But the price is going to remain at 83.00 US until I get a chance to take a look at everything that can be done and try and keep it simple... I don't want to take out the allen wrench and extra set of screws... Remember I did have a poster that did not know what a stud or a joist was... and just screwed it into the drywall,,, did not use the other option supplied and couldnt figure out what the problem was... scares me ...

mandarax
03-04-04, 05:18 PM
I got my order in for the T handles... went with the Italian made ones from a company based in the USA.. Also received my sample caps today from a US company as well and they look great as well... They also had some 24K gold ones... but me thinks I will stay with the black ones.

Robert,

I've been around on this forum for a long time and have been viewing this thread from time to time and although I do not own an X1 / 4800 I must say I'm impressed with the look of the product. I have a few business oridented questions for you (I am a business owner myself and it's always great to see someone starting something new for themselves).

Your a Canadian as I am, -- have you contacted Canadian distributors of multimedia projectors to see if they would be interested in purchasing your projector mount for resale ? I have been in the industry for quite a while now and there are some fairly large supplies based out of Toronto that I imagine that you would be able to distrobute to, Techdata being one of many.

Also have you thought about designing a [semi-]universal projector mount at a low cost ?

mandarax
03-12-04, 09:31 AM
tclp...

Thanks for the questions...

I have been approached by quite a few contacts that I have in the industry to have it go through distribution. You mention Techdata.. I generally do not deal with any company other than the original manufacturer for most of the products I carry.. If I endorse the product I produce a mount for it if the quantity and interest is there.. If I use a channel like the aforementioned it is not without having established a solid relationship with the manufacturer first.. and is used as a means of convenience..

Motivation for designing and engineering these comes from two very basic areas... One is that although not many people realize it the main business is the resale of HT equipment...projectors, screens, audio components, accessories etc.. most of which I deal direct... so these offerings assist in getting to know customers internationally... and they also serve to acknowledge that I am going to work hard for them... the other motivation was due to the fact that the products that are available I found to be inadequate... looked esthetically not pleasing to the eye,, ergonomically did not function well ... especially for a "home" theater environment..

I do not like stampings ... I do not like cheap hardware... I do not like poor finishes.. I also work directly with installers and they need the flexibility afforded in a well laid out design that is easy to assemble... limits the liability due to the amount of overkill in the design.. and their customers like the fact that they do not have a couple of stamped plates attached to their projector.. The money part of the equation does not even make sense due to the fact there is margin in the present offerings out there. Quite a bit more actually... So it is more of a testimonial type of offering at this point... My business model I suspect will always be quite a bit different than most... My company also offers huge events with BBQ to have people view new products, screens , projectors... etc... and foot the bill.. Again just an attempt to let the customer know that what he or she wants is always going to be the predominent factor in driving action compelling events..

Even though I am Canadian, I have also incorporated in the USA... Most of my best customers are actually in the USA actually and I suspect that over the longer term that the manufactured items like the mounts will remain in this location simply due to the fact that it is the best place on this planet to get a precision high quality cnc pieces like these produced... These are a small part of the business..and although they are growing rapidly with new offerings and the desire to have all the popular models produced so people have the acknowledgement that when they upgrade projectors it is highly probable that all they will need is the projector plate portion of the mount. Each and every improvement from the original which I actually just looked at yesterday.. and it looks rough compared to what we are pumping out now came from personally having my hands touching it... Upgraded the grade of the steel.. the threads... the machining,, the machining pattern,, the finish... the company name cnc laser cut into the plate,, the hardware through the knee joint... the addition of the toggle bolts (just in case), snap caps to conceal the hardware, the T Handles on the knee joint... the addition of the tools...allen wrench... driver.. so I guess when I think it has reached its very best and I do not come up with new improvements any longer I could feel better about the possibility of releasing it... but then I also lose one of my connections to actual people... and would be a fun part that is going to be extremely difficult to release.. BTW I do think I have reached a pinnacle with the present solution... In the long run I know I can better serve customers with the primary business located in the USA.. with people in the USA with high tech skills enthusiasm, trained and running it.. Getting these types of individuals that are also customer oriented is extremely hard to find these days anywhere...

I have a few designs on Universal mounts actually but again I just do not like them as much... I like to take the projector in my hands... and visualize what will be the best look for the projector... To date I have never chosen one of the universal solutions... The ones that are out there with the sliding arms.. they are horrid looking to me... the arms are made of such thin metal I can actually bend them with my fingers... My company will not put out a product basically that I wouldnt use myself... That would defeat one of the primary purposes of making these up in the first place..
I will also be designing hydraulic lifts in the future as well as the present offerings are in my view extremely disappointing.. Also will be coming out with some audio rack solutions... Ultimately the metal products that are manufactured will be severed from the primary business and stand alone.. They will either sink or swim ...

Good luck with your business.... actually I guess we both know it has nothing to do with luck... Your Movie Maven software looks like a winner.. Interesting to note how many actual mega public companies that are software oriented were written by Canadians.... now all living with our best doctors and actors in the USA.. Let me know when you move there and we can go splits on some Canadian beer shipments...

Robert,

I must say; quite the response there, thank you for the detailed response. It seems a bit hazy in your response so I'll ask for clarification. It seems that you took Techdata as being a manufactuer of some sort, they are a product distributor --- In the sense that you would be able to sell them hundreds / thousands of units and mass your units out into the retail market.

YO MANDRAX PLEASE, I got a quick question lol

I was one of the happy buyers of your X1 mount, excellent build, versatile, yada yada yada :D anyways, I lost the 3 screws that secure the Y-Plate to the bottom of the X1 and wodered what size screws those where exactly so I could purchase them at home depot or something. I would rather get the same exact size so if it is something I got to order from you, fine, if it is something I can get a local hardware store please let me know! Thanx

mandarax
03-13-04, 12:09 PM
tclp... lol... sorry about the long rant.. no one here to slap me.. simple answer is that I am not interested at this point of going through distribution through these channels... After reading the second paragraph where I mention techdata that there is a bit of confusion... I meant this for the other products that I carry... not the mounts.. The manufacturers that I deal with do not really like the fact that I do these up... they would rather make the margins on the products that are made and sold through their own channels... There would never be an interest to have a low margin, high quality piece for anyone except the consumer that realizes what value they are getting for such a remarkably low cost.. The entire equation for the product offering would change... The other motivation is that at some point I would like to be able to quantify being a sponser on this site, and the mounts are just not going to be able to do it on their own...

mcq3000,,, m4 .7 x 10 metric socket cap screws N.C.
I do not think home depot will carry metric this size and definitely not the grade I use.. The grade of any of their hardware is on the extreme low end.. If you are in need of some let me know and I will just put them in an envelope and mail them to you.. best to use email..

Cheers

Just a quick thanks to rob - got my X1 mount on Friday and decided to put it up today!

No problems with Rob's kit - it assembled very easily and was a no-brainer to align. Nice, high-quality finish on the pieces and looks much nicer than the "universal" mount that a friend of mine has. There's something to be said for buying a properly-designed mount for the projector you're installing.

The biggest challenge I had was trying to mount the projector to the ceiling of my condo. Which is made of concrete. Very, very hard concrete. Without the proper concrete drill (I just had a regular rechargable 12v drill), it was rather difficult to cut into the ceiling, even with a carbide bit.

Eventually I got the holes deep enough though, and everything is now mounted nicely overhead. I don't know if I'd want to hang from the ceiling, but it should certainly hold a 7 pound projector just fine.

Thanks again Rob!

mandarax
03-14-04, 02:51 PM
Nogami... thanks for the kind words.. The concrete on an apartment style Condo is probably something like an mpa 45 strength.. tough stuff. there is drills specifically for this kind of concrete that will cut through better than carbide... Hammer drill works good ... on the right setting .. Bet that carbide blade is a mess...

I just spent the last week with the X1 demo unit I have and you know it still stuns for bang for the buck... had not used it in quite some time... Maybe I will take it to the shootout again this year just to see how it does one year later..

Rob,

Great idea about bringing the X1 demo to the shootout. In fact, I have an interesting proposal. Why not try to do a blind test involving the X1 and the 4805 if you are able to get your hands on one in time. Wouldn't it be interesting if people's impressions of the X1 were more favorable than those of the 4805?
And wouldn't that be embarrassing to Infocus?

Wayne.

mandarax
03-14-04, 11:29 PM
Heh Wayne... It will be highly dependent on how much time we have... there is a slew of screens again.. more than I expected.. Quite a few very new pieces... which I am sure the guys will want to spend a bit of time with and go through some permutations.. I don't think any of the manufacturers will ever get embarrassed... there is a couple of manufacturers that are scared...but Infocus certainly is not one of them..

Don't think there will be even a spot to show off my own mounts due to time restraints... besides all the screens from DaLite, Stewart, Carada, Goo, and MM's and all the projectors... will also have the new Bravo D2, the Denon 5900, possibly a momitsu.. an anamorphic lens,, good chance for the DVDO new model.. so I will definitely have to do some time management so we do not get overloaded playing with all the toys.

I think the 4805 will please and satisfy many... however we have a three chipper coming..and quite a few 2+ pieces... and Epsons new lcd releases.. and a couple of matterhorns as well so it should be an excellent event... plus I get to see some of the guys if I don't burn out... Was so tired last year from getting everything together it was a bit fuzzy... actually fell asleep standing up at the event last year... the bbq and the fried onions woke me up... Still a few more spots if anyone is interested in coming ... just over 100 ...and mostly all AVSers... info on the event is in the > 3500 forum... if you can make it on April 17 just fire me off an email with

If I ordered an x1 mount today...about how long does it take to receive?

Also It seemed like there was quite a bit of disctance between the mounting plates (ceiling and projector). Is that the standard for 8' ceilings? How adjustable is that ? Just wanting to make sure i can get it to align with my 100" screen that tarts about 1" from the ceiling

Thanks

How do get you money through paypal?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oops... I meant to say the screen starts about 7.5 inches from the ceiling.

Thanks

mandarax
03-18-04, 08:40 AM
spektrum...

Normally on an 8' ceiling the top of the screen would be lower than the 7.5" given that it is ideal to have the eye level at least 1/3 up from the bottom of the screen.. Given that screen height I would recommend the 4.5 inch drop which will work out well with the image offset on the X1.

Paypal... it is a business paypal account so you can utilize credit cards...

mandarax,
how much is the drop (exact inches) from ceiling to the X1 projector for you mount? let me know...thanks

SR

mandarax
03-19-04, 10:35 AM
SR7..

The standard drop distances are 4.5", or 10" or 15.5" ... can be slightly less if on each if the threads are inserted through the ceiling plate.. just over an inch..

Extentions can also be made up for high ceilings or if you want to extend out of the wall application.. these are priced according to complexity and overall extention length..

Broke a record on mounts this week... actually shattered the record.. I am pooped but it feels good to get all the support... This week I actually received more orders from a friend of a friend, or someone that had purchased and were buying another one for someone they knew that bought an X1 recently.. My keyboarding skills are getting to sound like a hum instead of individual tapping of keys.

Anyway thanks for making a record breaking week. It is greatly appreciated. My daughters and I had a blast packaging all these up the last couple of days. (March Break) They make the mundane aspects of doing these the most fun... My stomach is actually sore from laughing so hard yesterday. Then we did 2 hours of Xbox MX motocross.. on a 120" wide screen. They are only 10 and 8, but they can package, do invoicing, do the barcoding.. They are definitely into the business and enjoy learning about projectors, screens, and soon audio equipment... look out for these girls in the future... They made the decision to go all black,,, to cnc laser cut the companies initials into the plate... to go with the T handles instead of the nyloc nut. If you heard our board room meetings you wouldnt believe how bang on target these girls are making decisions, and their reasoning is incredulously accurate. Looks like we will be having fun with this for a while..

Luis..

Thanks for the update... The customs story is a pile of crap... If you look at the tracking for it .. there is no customs delay... there is never a customs delay... They clear customs before they leave... I hate when they lie about this stuff.. I may have to give UPS a chance at some point.. Fedex is way more expensive and they have all these extra charges... 2 dollars for home delivery... 3.25 if it not in the city... fuel surcharges... etc etc... 6.00 pick up charge per week..

If you guys can have it delivered to work that would save me some coin.. Take out the shipping cost and the paypal cost and the packaging materials and these are being sold for just over 50 dollars.. my cost not including my time.. If I was making a stamping like the manufacturers that charge 150.00 and up or especially some of the garbage on ebay I would still have some margin... but these pieces are cnc machined and cnc laser cut.. you will also note the difference in hardware... philips screws for the projector vs black alloy capscrews... exponential difference in price and strength.. allen wrenches... driver bits.. snap caps.. I have to drive out numbers that I did last week and this week on the X1 with at least 7 other models to make this work out at this price over the long term.. I am trying to at least be able to have it supported by someone doing all of the manual work involved with picking up delivery , packaging , shipping, commercial invoices, producing and printing barcodes for Fedex.. assembly for powder coating ..disassembly upon return ... keeping inventory of parts up etc etc.

I personally believe that it can be done still and you guys sure did blow some wind in my sails last week and this week with all those orders...

thanks

Ok ... I found out what happened to one trailer on the 17th.. actually the ones that were sent out on the 22nd are for the most part they all are already delivered. but they had one trailer on the 17th that I guess customs cherry picked to blast through everything... so if your tracking states the 17th..that it left here that is the reason... first time this has happened in one year... If you have one of the units from this shipment sorry about the delay...

All my info is in my original email to the robert@digital-visions.ca address with payment. My email is brian22@direcway.com. Thanks!

Hi Brian ... sorry for the non response to the PM.. have been extremely busy with the shootout and these mounts... Your mount was shipped on the 17th... Unfortunately it was one of the ones that was on a trailer that was held... Fedex tracking number 256982810003648.. Sorry about that.. It is making its way to California now tho.... you will note on the tracking that it did nothing for almost a week...

Thanks klipsch...

I guess one full trailer getting pulled in the year isnt so bad... I did drive me a bit wacko tho when I saw 60 some odd mounts on that one trailer for the 17th... I guess they will randomly pull the trailers over and check out each and every item... I am now told they pulled three complete trailers..

Must be driving Fedex more wacko than me...

Again the delay only was on that one shipment for the 17th... everything else is fine and the ones for the 17th are over 3/4 delivered now... except for the ones on the west coast..

All the orders received even up to yesterday are now with Fedex... The above note again only involved one Fedex trailer on the 17th.. there was actually 5 full Fedex trailers that got pulled for some reason ....

Thanks again for your orders... last week was another great week

Hi Robert,

I was wondering if you are going to email us the fedex number for tracking purposes. I am referring to my paypal order on the 24th.

Thanks and looking forward to the mount...

sunnyvali... your mount went out on the 25th... fedex tracking 256982810003860 ... believe it left Buffalo today....

All the shipments leave same day or next depending on what time the payment is received... If you leave your telephone number for Fedex I include it on the bar code and anyone can call fedex and check for tracking number based on telephone number ... I will not be able to give every tracking number out due to how busy I am but shortly the feature on Fedex should automatically give this on an email as soon as I print the bar code since I do the shipping using fedex online software..

Hi Robert,

I seem to have a strange problem with my mount that know one else seems to be having (or at least mentioned).

The screw that joins the front of the X1 to the mounting plate seems to be too long. It hits what appears to be plastic at the bottom of the brass insert before it can actually tighten against the mounting plate. I had no problems with the back two screws (they were all the same length).

Do I have a peculiar X1? I fixed this for now by placing 5 of the small washers used for mounting computer motherboards on the screw.

See the attached picture.

Arbury...

Thats a new one .... maybe the brass insert is stripped... If you look down on the brass insert you will note that they are all the same depth... you should only hand turn the cap screws in.. but there is something definitely wrong with your insert... I wouldnt force it... It is possible that it is the screw that is stripped ...try taking another one of the screws and inserting it... I doubt it is the screw tho...due to the fact that the grade of capscrew is very high and black alloy... let me know ... This is definitely a first...
Where did you purchase the projector..?? I would seriously take it back.. or get a shorter cap screw as a temporary fix rather than make it goofy with those washers..

Sunnuvali.. no problem...

Hi Robert,

It's not the screw, I tried all 3 of them with the same results. I don't think it is the insert either as I can see the plastic it is hitting at the bottom of the insert. I used a small glasses screwdriver to measure the depth of the hole to the plastic and it matches the distance that the screw threads in. the color of the plastic looks the same as the plastic the colorwheel is mounted in that I can see with the bulb removed

I have had the projector for over 1/2 year, so I don't think taking it back is an option.

Hi Mandarax,

sorry if I missed this earlier in the massive thread ... but do you make mounts for other projectors ? I am specifically chasing one for the Epson EMP-7250.
Or do you make a universal mount that would suit ?

Thanks,

mandarax
03-31-04, 01:11 PM
arbury... Don't know what to say the hole depths are all the same on all three holes... I suggest you go and get one screw that is not as deep for the one that does not go in.. If you call Infocus they will tell you they should all be the same... One thing you do not want to do with any projector is crank the screws tight... On the projector these are just brass inserts molded into plastic... they are not meant to be torqued.. One of the reasons that I supply the more expensive cap screws is so you can just hand turn them tight. Your situation with one insert not as long as the other two is unique...

Darthmaul... I only make mounts for the projectors I endorse... I do not make a universal mount as I think these are ugly and they just do not work that good.. No plans in the future for the Epson EMP-7250... There may be a very very good chance that I will do the New Epson 200 and 500 models... it all depends on how they do at my shootout event.

Just thought I would let you guys know.. The official release of the 4805 from Infocus was stated to me yesterday from Infocus is June.. It was also verified that the hole positions are identical for the 4805 to the X1 and 4800 .... although as I witnessed At Ces the case is slightly different.
In any event if you are going to upgrade to a 4805 you do not need to get another mount... the throw distance and offset may be different..

Any word yet as to whether you'll have one of these 4805's at the shootout as a pre-release?

Also, will any of the projectors and/or screens be available for purchase and if so at demo prices?

I am part of the community association for Roseville so painting the community center becomes part of "community" work. Don't know what happened to the rest of the "community" but I am pretty sure they will like the changes... I also do a movie night once per month for the children in the community so I made up one room permanent for their theater room.

I am looking for some verbiage on "community" to put on the framed section of a wall I made up... anyone know of some good verbiage let me know...

Mandarax,
The mount looks great! Thanks for the good product and service.

Just an FYI that I seem to have a similar issue to Arbury but it was with all bolts. The screw gets much harder to screw in at about the same point. I used something to space it out and it worked fine. I only did the screws hand tight, like you mentioned above. I did not look into the holes to see if it was blocked by plastic like Arbury saw. I will take it down after my Matrix Revolutions screening party this weekend and look more. (I have to hook up my new H/K 7200 and make room for the 2nd row of seating before then)

Thats kind of curious ... I asked my Infocus contact and he stated that all the brass inserts are the same... so it does not make sense... Hope you understand that I can't go shipping out shorter screws because of two incidents out of 1900 that come out weird. Would appreciate you taking a look at it after your Matrix party.. I actually have a similar situation with the BenQ 8700 demo unit I received this week in one of the holes ..but it was indeed the thread stripped in one of the brass inserts which limited the amount I could screw into the unit and I didnt want to force it to correct the problem... Sometimes when parts come out of China you have to expect a few glitches..... That is why I only stick to products and manufacturers that are North American... like those T handles for instance... the threads on the first ones... as depicted in the post are made in China... I didnt like the tolerance and the material used and switched it to a USA manufacturer...(actually made in Italy) with brass inserts.. They cost more but I expect a zero error factor since the amount of threads in the actual t handle is exponential to the Chinese made ones and much better materials.... I have nothing against items being made in China but I am finding that with cables especially, and other items it just doesnt compare to the quality and you do get what you pay for...

In any event have fun at the Matrix screening... If I get a chance I will probably do the same ..

Running on the tail end of this last batch.... 18 more to go... another batch is going in for powder coating on Tuesday. This may be the last full batch as I do not know how much longer the X1 will continue, and the 4805 is not scheduled for release until June, and I am not sure what the verdict will be on this piece but suspect it will not have the same volumes as the X1 in any event.. I will still pump these out but the batch sizes will become smaller and therefore may be price modified... I suspect the next batch will take me through to June..

Mandarax,
Well I did have some time to take it down and look at the threads and they all looked fine. I put something in the hole to see that the treads were the expected length of the bolts and they were as expected. All the bolts stuck out nearly the same amount. I took some photo's and will post them this evening, when I get home. I did get some nice comments about the mount at the screening. Thanks!
SR7,
Glad to hear I am not the only one. I was able to use something to space out the difference and there was still enough threads to hold solid. The something was some wire clamps that I had around the house. Not the right thing but something that worked for the time being. Good luck!

mehurricane ... those are the same screws as depicted in the mount pics I posted with the X1.. Very strange indeed... I cannot believe that Infocus would have shortened the length of the brass insert this much... That would be kind skimping out on a very low dollar brass insert... Hell they would save 100000 times this much by just revising the box size to have the projector in the carrying case and have the wires in the styrofoam..

The picture also shows the lengths to be different for each hole... which is a bit bizarre as well... Email me please where you purchased this projector..

Had my mount installed this week and am very pleased, the look is nice and professional. The only problem was the "handyman" installing tightened the middle bolt to tight and it indented into the body of the X1 but just barely, I realize most of you are DIY but perhaps instructions would be helpful. Anyway, thanks and I am very happy with projector and mount. It sure beats the pants off of the 42" edtv plasma I was going to buy for about half the cost.

its not hard to diy, you just got to try. I never did this before and measured...etc and hooked up my screen and projector myself. and I dont consider myself very handy!!!!!!

infact I just got my X1 and had the mount from my old projector. I traced a template with paper of the X1 and its holes and made the marks on my mounting plate. drilled the holes, hooked it up and bam I have a new mount. :)

the guy doing it for you cant be very handy if he does not know to not tighten bolts to hard on such a delicate piece of equipment, its not 100lbs or anything and doesnt need close to anything very tight to holed, snug is more like it. I always say if it cant be done right do it yourself. you couldnt do much worse than him, infact I bet you would have not over tightened the bolts. most anything is not very hard to do if you give it a go and try yourself. after the first time of doing it yourself you will start doing other projects you would have hired for , yourself.

good luck. I use to be one of those guys and now take on evey task myseld. whether I know how to do it or not. the only way you learn.

Ok ... that does it I will get two sizes for now.... and send both on future shipments.. I cant believe that they would skimp out on the size of the chassis wall thickness. ie therefore less threads... These can be cut but black alloy metal capstrews are not that easy... The 10's supplied do fit my demo X1 no problem.. have been using 10's all along... I changed the T-handles from the ones that were local here because they did not have a lot of thread. Are the inserts still brass?? I don't deal with X1's myself much any longer.

I'm curious to get to the bottom (pun intended) of this bolt depth issue.

My X1 is an older one from Feb 2003 (probably the same as your demo one mandarax). My brass inserts fit a metric M4 bolt (4mm diameter) and bottoms out at 10mm depth. At the bottom depth there appears to be a steel plate... I can't say for sure what it is but, judging from pictures I've seen of the inside of the case, the brass inserts are completely enclosed in plastic pillars inside the case, and the steel is probably a small circular stop-plate inserted between the end of the brass insert and the top of the plastic pillar.

About 6 or so months ago one user reported that he bought bolts that were too long and screwing them in all the way actually broke something on a circuit board and he had to send his projector in for repair. (To make matters worse, he didn't realize what had caused the problem and did it a second time before he clued in.) That kinda makes me wonder if InFocus stopped putting the steel stop-plates in and this fellow broke through the top of the plastic pillar?

I had one other user report to me a couple of months ago that the 4mm bolts he bought at the hardware store didn't fit his X1, but he thought 6mm would be right. Unfortunately he never got back to me on what he finally bought, so I assumed he discovered he got the wrong bolts the first time. That's the only report I've seen of M4 bolts not fitting.

However, the recent posts here have me wondering if something really has changed during the X1's production run...

I agree it seems unlikely that they changed the depth, especially since that seems to be a depth molded into the plastic of the chassis. Can someone stick a paperclip or something down to the bottom of the hole and determine what the depth is now for us?

Is it possible that InFocus's manufacturer in China has a new batch of inserts with a slightly different threading? Could it be that the reason mandarax's 4mmx10mm long bolts are not fully seating is because the threads are binding up? Does it get stiffer the further you screw them in? Or does it go smoothly until it suddenly stops at the bottom?

technut Canada

I just read backward to this post by Arbury (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=3596654#post3596654) where he says that only the front hole didn't take the full 10mm bolt length, the rear two holes were fine. He also commented that there appeared to be plastic at the bottom of the front hole.

There were also a couple of other posts that indicated the depth of the hole was short and that there was some variance in the depths.

So now I'm wondering... what if InFocus isn't putting the steel stop-plates in at the bottom of the hole anymore... and during the molding process maybe some excess molten plastic is seeping up into the brass inserts? I have no idea how the molding/insert process works, but I'm guessing the brass inserts are set in the mold and the plastic added to it and molded around them.

If it was plastic seepage then that would make the hole depth shorter, and it might also explain why the depth could vary from hole to hole and sample to sample.

Technut... First thanks for all the hard work you did putting the faq sheet together for everyone.. The amount of work you did is incredulous.. I refer customers to your faq sheet all the time.. It is an invaluable resource for people getting into HT with the X1 product which to me still is a bang for the buck contender.. Technut ... I do not know if you have looked at the most recent pics of the changes in the mount design but it is has come a long way as far as I am concerned.. It has and remains a fun ride making these up.. My guess and it is only a guess that with some distribution channels a product might get a few little changes in the effort to maximize some margin. The product still is selling well but for some channels there may be some subtle differences as the product goes through its manufacturing cycle.. On units I sell here even a couple of weeks ago the 10mm fits as all prior ones did ... the brass insert being the exact same number of threads. Thats why I find this very curious on a few units.. Possibly the newer models like the X2 are going through some changes or there was a small inventory problem with the inserts.. dunno ... Even if someone wanted to do a fine adjustment on axis they could also utilize the threads to slightly tilt the projector.. they do not need to as this can be achieved by the adjustments on the knee joint as part of the design of the mount itself.... But another reason non the less for trying to keep the number of threads to the max as much as possible.

The screws provided are m4 ..definitely not M6 .. the plate is crs 14ga.. so given this the 10mm are the ones I go with. Screws have different strengths... I use black allow capscrews.. The capscrews and with the black alloy is as good as it gets. Black alloy has almost 3 times the strength of stainsless steel.. The cap screws not only look attractive but they are easy to hand turn.. The threads hold the projector.. Tightening does nothing to add any secrurity.. it actually can weaken the bond by putting unnecessary stress onto the plastic shell.. One of the reasons for using capscrews is that they are easy to hand turn. No tools required. By tightening the screw all that is happening is that the brass insert is putting forces onto the plastic shell... You do not need or want this to happen..

The projector weight is not an issue.. the load bearing on black alloy is much greater than conventional plated screws..or stainless as previously mentioned. I could use shorter screws but then the vast majority gets less holding power with less threads.. Again all the threads are not really required and it would pass a load bearing test with far less threads.. I just as you know always try and achieve optimal results and use the best processes and materials coupled with the ergonomics and esthetics also as high priorities. These few anomolies are unique.. I hate to change the regular 10mm screws in lieu of a few goofy ones.. for the ones posted here there have been over 100 shipped in the same space of time with no problems. With all the newest changes ... the T. handles,, the snap caps to cover the hardware.. the extra cutting for my companies initials into the plate.. lockwashers on the knee joint.. it is so close to the cost.. I just cant keep throwing more and more stuff into it. Especially since the logistical part of putting these out is not even in the cost and at some point I am going to have to hire someone to take care of the logistics due to the amount of time it sucks up to make these, package in bubble wrap, commercial invoices, emails, bar codes..(did anyone notice the DV in the barcode matching the DV on the plate?) The DV in the plate btw stands for my company name Digital Visions.. I get a lot of emails from people asking what this means..

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this as I am still told that the inserts have not been changed.. Thanks to the guys that reported this anomoly as I do want to get to the bottom of it.. Easy fix just go with 6mm vs 10mm but that makes me wonder if I am doing the vast majority an improvement or if I am actually doing a revision that is diminishing the product for the vast majority of the population that has zero problems... The most recent shipments I received still having no problems.

I know when buying some stuff in box stores the actual products are not really what one expects that they are getting ... a slight mod in the name or model number from the primary model.. but it usually the electronics inside that have been minimized not the physical mechanical attributes..

Let me know what you guys think ... shorter screws won't make it dangerous and would still pass loading tests.. I use a firm that does extremely high level testing for the automotive industry surpassing the regular normal testing mandates for a product like this.. Without even testing it I know it will pass... the hardware used by others alone by the best companies out there is just not as good.. regular screws are cheap.. screws have different load bearing capabilities just like variances in diameter of a piece of metal cnc steel has.. The load bearing on black metal used in cnc machined knee joint pieces is almost two tons. The X1 not really going to put any stress on this at all.. I just like the size because it is easy to spin on adjusting pieces by hand .. and looks better than tiny little slot type stampings held by cheap hardware.. If you look at the Z2 plate a DIY just cant repeat this with their equipment.. No way no how.. having the base properly seat on the projector does make a difference.. vs extention arms that swivel to meet the holes..

Thanks again for your help and look forward to seeing what you guys think.. Technut what faq sheet are you doing next?? You certainly have my standing O for all the work you put out on the X1. and presenting it in a logical.. easy to understand way.. Given that I do some testing of hardware one of the reasons I was drawn away from the chinese produced T Handles is due to the fact that I didn't trust it. The ones I went with have more 9 times the thread... the moulding on the insert is much more solid.. and for 1.20 more it seemed like the way to go... Sometimes I am amazed at what some companies will do to shave of a penny.. Not saying it is the case here but something has gone a bit loopy.
A suggestion... for those that bought these in box stores which through email is the common denominator so far... IF these stores have a unit out take the screws supplied to the store and ask if you can thread them into the demo unit.. Would be interesting to see..

I just noticed at a box store some projectors being set up showing a 18" screen.. on a white background board.. looked horrid.. these guys are doing more harm for us front projection enthusiast than good. Ie people will see it doing this setup and think.. my god that looks like crap at 18" what will it be like at 7 ft wide.. tell their friends.. their friends tell other friends..

Interesting to note... I just finished the BenQ PE 8700 mount even though it is just shy 20 LBS the standard cnc machined arms held it in any position with no problem. The BenQ PE 7800 is the same chassis and a bit lighter.

Good to know that your mount can take it like a man...

A few big steel companies went belly up in North America... therefore the price of steel is now going through the roof.. I may have to ship via UPS in the future to try and compensate for the steel pricing going up... It is going through the roof.. and expected to keep increasing ..

There is no meat on this bone..... so something is going to have to give..

Thanks for your continued support of this product... Hopefully it will endure until the new 4805 comes out.. and if there is some action on the X2.. I will be doing the BenQ 6100, and the BenQ 6200, and the Epson Cinema 200 and Epson Cinema 500.. next.. The X1 mount is still going strong so I will decide on the next batch or when the 4805 comes out if it can still sustain the volume to keep the price low...

Robert,

I hate to ask this in the forum, but my email and pm's have gone unanswered. I ordered the mount from you on 4/19 with the email of sc_adams@comcast.net, and have since asked multiple times for a tracking number or status as Fedex does not have my address or phone number in their system.

Again, i hate to ask this in a forum, but I am hoping that at least I can get a response with a tracking number as I would think two weeks should be an ample time to have the mount delivered, and i am beginning to wonder whether paypal has done something incorrectly. My next course of action will be to contact them and ensure that the payment was posted properly.

Please advise

Scott.. Per PM ... first package has gone awol... and second one has been shipped... tracking number sent PM'd.. Let me know if the first one shows up... ..

It is important to note that you should put all the information with the paypal info... IE telephone number.. and if you are requesting a drop other than 10" then it should be specified on the info as well.. otherwise I assume you are going with the standard and that is what will be shipped. Many people will mention a drop in an email and only process the payment for the mount a week or more after the email... I get over 100 emails per day and cannot go through all the emails... These offerings are only a very small part of my business activity..

Thankyou for understanding...

I called Infocus today regarding the brass inserts... They advised again that nothing has changed.. not the chassis..not the brass inserts... Their spec for the screws is the same depth as the ones provided... Except that they do not use the better black alloy capscrews... just regular screws that are exponentially cheaper.. but the length is the same..

Go figure... must be a problem with the insert itself, or some other anomoly with the projectors that had this problem.. Do not want to go shorter for the very few that had this problem..

I had bolts from other projectors used for mounting but damn the X1 needed some small bolts. not wanting or actually couldnt leave for HD because of the 2 little ones I looked around the house and my huge bolt/screw draw had nothing that small, couldnt believe it.

thought more and looked up at the ceiling.... hhhmmm those bolt/screws holding in the glass housings for the ceiling fan bulbs look small enough!

sure enough they werer perfect, short enough and could take a philips or socket to screw in. worked perfect!

look around the house if you need the correct bolts to fit your X1 for mounting. :)

Upon speaking to Infocus ... they advised again that nothing had changed ..they also advised that they spec 12's not 10's.. So something definitely got goofed up... They still spec 12's on the X2, 4800, X1. So there you have it... I wouldnt use screws unless you know what they are. The black alloy ones have exponentially more psi load strength than the ones supplied by Commercial mounts... and since you are in the USA it is unlikely that you have many metric screws laying around... You do not want to strip the brass inserts with a non metric screw.. brass is a soft metal.. DONT DO IT>>

Still for the very few...you should be okay with as many turns as I saw in the pic.. I have been having problems with a few Infocus adapters as of late as well.. The VGA ones... three duds in a month.. as Joe Schmo said..

"WhaaaaTTT is going ONnnnnnnn???"

It is probably just a small batch of stripped inserts...

Digital Visions does not use the Chinese stuff..... one return or problem = many many many screws... and it just isnt worth the risk..

Thanks for the followup posts Robert, and the compliments on the FAQ. I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I took off for a short vacation just after my posts about the screws. My new FAQ (http://members.shaw.ca/technut/sp4805/) is on the InFocus SP4805 but I may not be able to cover it as well.... It doesn't look like I'll be owning one (unless someone... InFocus?.. decides to be very generous with a demo unit or something). But I'm still getting by with my X1 quite nicely for now.

I don't know what's up with the screws/inserts, but sure looks like something is out of whack with some of the new units coming out. I just hope that some poor user doesn't damage their projector by forcing something that SHOULD fit but doesn't. I emailed InFocus tech support about it but haven't heard back yet.

technut..... Hope you had a great vacation... hell if I was an Infocus executive and saw what you put out I would not flinch at giving you a SP4805... the amount of work put into the X1 FAQ was incredulous..
Just think of all the support calls it may have saved customer service..

The screws should fit based on the spec... I don't think I will minimize my product due to a faux pas at Infocus.. and for 3 out of now over 2000 units it wouldnt make much sense...

If they give you a 4805 let me know and I will send you one of the newer mounts for the shipping cost... I am an Infocus dealer as well and your FAQ sheet has helped out many of my customers... and saved me countless hours..

Robert, Technut,

I can offer some insight on the mount bolts. Mine arrived last week and after a few days I got around to installing the mount. I was not able to hand turn the bolts into the chassis. I backed it out and tried all three with the same experience. I measured the depth of the hole (centre and edge, the bottom was flat) and they all match the bolts exactly. Next, I repeatedly turned the bolts in by hand and backed them out. They never gained any ground. I had another set of metric bolts that were longer, the same thread count and size. They were easier to turn but they stopped at exactly the same place as the others. I popped on a wrench and very gingerly continued to turn. It did not take very much torque. Repeat very very little torque. I heard no heart stopping sounds or cracking. However, I did lubricate the threads with some graphite from my pencil. I backed out the bolt with no signs of wear and continued my installation.

A few tiny notes. I added a lock nut to the chassis bolts. This gave me a little more peace of mind plus it allows for a totally useless fine pitch and roll adjustment.

The holes in the ceiling plate did not fit the long bolts until I knocked out the inner power coating. The first one popped right out, the other one required some knuckle skin. :(

Also, I did install the lock washers in a particular orientation. With the extruded end of the washer gripping against the "off direction". I did this for both ends.

Thanks Robert for making such an elegant and robust design. I will certainly recommend your mounts to my HT wannabe friends. :)

Thanks John...

I had been waiting for my order of 5000 hinged snap caps... They will all be in the #8 screw size... They have arrived ... it eliminates have the seperate pieces for the snap cap.. Some of the mounts went out with #10's with stainless steel screws...for the ceiling/wall plate.. They fit but if the powder coat fills the hole a bit they can be a bit tight..

The new hinged snap cap will be on the screw in the hardware kit.. Just one less piece to deal with..and since it is hinged it will be impossible to lose..

Robert

Robert,

5000! That is a lot of screws. I guess you are stocking up for when the y and z-generations move their HT gear out of Mom's basement.

I didn't use the hex key. The handle and washers supplied plenty of grip to tighten it. It was an extra touch that most companies would never have bothered with. I didn't bother using the black caps either. It was another nice touch but they kept popping off. . . When I get a piece of IKEA furniture and they give you a bag of those things I usually toss them into the drawer anyway. :) The hinged caps sound like an elegant design though.

But I did use the clear plastic cap rims. I figured they would give a little bit of vibration isolation from the 5.0s tremors I get when a bus goes by and keep the power coating intact. The cap rims don't line up exactly when you tighten up the ceiling bolts and I think that is why the caps kept popping off. No big deal. I love it.

PS: Comment from my wife when she finally saw they mount "I didn't know it was going to be that nice"! :) Once I get the cabling track installed I will take a pic.

Cheers,
John

John...

I do not know what it is with the mount... and women.. I have another completely different design with a casting...heavy spring... and I spent exponentially more time getting this one figured out... Guys love the casting design.. women.. always seem to prefer this one..

If you crank in the snap too tight it will distort the snap.. You are not getting any better holding power by over tightening the screw.. In fact it may be less.. The shape will always be able to be round again though ..just apply an equal amount of force.. if you start where the distortion is visible you should put enough oomph on it to put it on..

The # 8s have a smaller cap..and therefore much more rigid and less likely to bend.. IE smaller diameter plastic = less flex..

Yeah I guess 5000 is a lot... about a 10 month supply.. If I continue to just go word of mouth.. and if I finally break and have one of my channels take it .. about 3 months.. So far it is a lot of fun.. If I ebay it showing it doing its thing with a 20lb projector no problem.. hmm ...

One great thing that has happened tho is that many of my customers that did buy the X1 are now upgrading ... and the heavy BenQ's and a much heavier cnc laser cut plate held up without breaking a sweat no problem combined with the plate over 20lbs.. I was releaved that they won't have to buy the entire mount, and only the plate.. Those 5/8s diameter cnc machined arms look wimpy to some but they have the PSI load strength of 3500 lbs.

Thanks John for the info about the bolts and threads. My contact at InFocus Support hadn't heard of any problems and thought it might be the bolts, so I passed on that you had tried different bolts and had the same problem.

scotta368

had the same issue with the screws, and similar to what john said, you can go ahead and tighten them all the way down. i measured and verified that the screw holes are all three the same sizes and depths. it seems that the holes are not threaded all the way down. i was able to tighten my screws by gently turning with a bit driver, heard a little noise which to me sounded just like threading a nut; but heard absolutely nothing sounding like plastic crunching or anything being damaged in anyway. it seems as though however infocus is having some issue in threading the mounting holes.

anyway thanks for making a great mount!!!

I think it must have something to do with the brass inserts being used..

The Infocus tech stated 12's , and I use 10's and my plate is thicker... and I use black alloy capscrews ... so there is no chance of the capscrews being at fault..

Robert

Mandarax you are right about over cranking the ceiling bolts. I only snugged it up lightly but the plastic cap-rims did distort.

FYI DIY'ers: I got my metric bolts from Réno Depot (Building Box, now owned by Rona). They had a hex head and were about 4 mm longer than the supplied ones. I actually had these before I got my mount as I planned on making my own mount. Then I came to my senses. :)

There is nothing wimpy about that 5/8" arm. I was hoping I could just pop on a 3/4" spanner and snug up the lock nut. As that is the biggest I have short of an an adjustable. I could have sworn I had a 7/8" here somwhere. Time to clean up the toolbox.

Here is a thought Mandarax. Make an adapter that will fit a standard tripod mount (1/4-20 or 3/8-16). That way you can use your old mount also as a security camera mount.

John

mandarax
05-12-04, 07:02 PM
John ...

I actually have people using these for a variety of alternate uses ... With the Casting design which actually distorted when powder coating it.. ie aluminum casting at 500 plus degrees in an oven for just under an hour the spring pushed out the casting... therefore the new design used a 7/16 insert into the same plate.. But no tripod stuff for me .. there is one guy that actually has a mount on an auction that uses a tripod part.. and although adequate for a low to mid line camera in the upright position would never hang a projector from it... People use these for mounting the screen and flip them up and out of position.. I had one use them as planter holders for some really heavy pots btw.. some used em for speakers inverted.. and hanging... For projectors this one does everything from wall mounting Ceiling ... can take extentions... both in wall and ceiling .... has three standard drops for ceiling... moves on all axis.. and easily swaps out plates when changing...

Just got my X1 mount today. (It looks fantastic. Thanks, Robert, for such a great product). Now I just need to finish installing it. I think I have everything complete except the knee joint. My question is: what is the "order" of the knee joints/ bolt/washer/nut assembly.

Is it

[bolt]-[knee]-[washer]-[washer]-[knee]-[nut]

or

[bolt]-[washer]-[knee]-[knee]-[washer]-[nut]

or some other order? Are the washers needed at all?

Thanks in advance.

Almost there ...

bolt]-[washer]-[knee]-[knee]-[washer]-[nut] ...

is what I did. You want the lock washers binding against the knee. They don't mate well with the curves surface of the knee but they will lock down the joint if turned by hand alone.

I will be buying the X1 and mount from Robert in the next couple days and had a few questions for setup.

Can any users of this mount and the X1, who mount on an 8' ceiling tell me what size their screen is, projection dist. and how far the bottom of the screen is from the floor? Also what drop was used.

I want to have the front three speakers fairly even in height. Which is about 36" from the floor. I'd like to have about 50" high screen. Is this possible?

Great thread. Very helpful. Can't wait to make everybody jealous. Haha...

TheLidlessEye ...... first great moniker name.. I do these mounts as only a very small part of my business. I was formally a VP Finance for an international manufacturing company... and spent much more time in the plant and with engineering than in my office. So given that I did not like the options available to customers I started making these up as an alternative... Financially it makes no sense as I make more money on the other commercial mounts.. Its just fun to do these up and it keeps me with my prior roots... As far as branching out ... I have over 400 products related to Home Theater.. With respect to the BenQ ... The 6200 is a great piece... There is however some new pieces coming out shortly in the PB 8xxx line up that have DVI input and I am patiently awaiting their release and wanting to try these pieces out with the new anamorphic lens from Panamorph. On paper ... I think this option for the budget minded may be a killer combo.. and can't wait to do a side to side comparison with some of the other options available... I know many would think that why would you do this when you sell the X1 and SP4805 chassis mount... but the truth is I don't care how many mounts I sell as it is almost purely a service only, and it is cool to have one of my own pieces in so many AVS'ers home theater room. I am a bit more convinced that an XGA resolution in even the short term can be a better option for people than going with a SVGA.. Try to keep fun into the equation in the business ... and keep some of my roots in manufacturing..

Jeff.... thanks for the kind words... I will pass this on to Amber and Stephanie who actually packaged the unit.. Except I may have to give them a raise. . I recently had all the runs I picked up and gave bubble bags given to the powder coater to use when taking the pieces off the hooks after being baked for about an hour... They had no problem doing this but I do think I passed the mark for reasonable expectation quite some time ago. Everyone of the manufacturers I use to produce these are still has a great attitude and are used to dealing with picky bastards... As mentioned my daughters packaged this up for you .. I think there is a picture of them in this thread here somewhere... They also did the invoicing, produced the barcode, put the hardware together and packaged up the hardware kit. My oldest daughter is only 11... and look out ... she knows more about screens, projectors, and technical info in general than most people walking into a box store... and that includes the ones that are working in the box store ( at least in this location)..
You put a grin on my face that will last a while... thanks..

Re .... trying to make one mount... if I make one mount.. actually take the first mount for any new model that I do... It costs me 75.00 for one sample plate ... that is just the projector plate.. to get cnc laser cut. I have a minimum charge for powder coating... so I cant even take them to get powder coating... the minimum charge for welding is one hour at 65.00 per hour.. The minimum charge for cnc machining is also one hour.. and if I just did one no one would be interested... but the minimum charge for getting set up say on a machine is an hour... @ 72.00 per hour. Minimum order for powder coating is 450.00 ... If you look at the individual pieces of hardware... two toggle bolts, two wood screws, one brass inserted T handle , one black allow capscrew for the knee joint ... three black allow capscrews for the projector... the plate that is cut. both for the projector plate and ceiling plate... the nuts 4 of them for locking.. two lock washers, two hinged snap caps that conceil the hardware, one allen wrench, one driver bit for the wood screws, the poly bags, the boxes, the bubble wrap, tape, paper for invoicing... and it takes me roughly two days for each new plate design to get it on cad... go to the cnc laser cutter to get samples cut... make revisions if necessary... procurement and packaging costs.. shot blast the plates.. wipe down the plates prior to assembly... the powder coater also has three seperate bath systems prior to coating,, assembly of the parts prior to powder coating,,, tolerance checking to make sure the powder will neither lock or fill the grooves.. picking up the parts dissassembling to individually bubble wrap each piece.. assembling the hardware parts bag... price includes shipping and handling via Fedex..

Thanks for your continued support... I will be taking a much needed break on the week commencing July 25. Doing more work around the house that needs to get finished... and therefore will be putting an iron grid around my PC for the entire week. I will be shipping up to and including next Friday. All the orders that come in will be shipped on a first in first out basis... and I prepackaged several units to get them out fast when I get back to the PC... Thanks again ...

Thanks for the orders while I was away... I didnt get any work done around the house BTW... but did get a great week away up in Georgian Bay. We had 29 sailboats go by the cottage the other day and I was thinking it would have been great to have the projector do its thing in total darkness on those white sails...

I had enough prepackaged btw so there would not be a lag when I got back.... and one additional batch is going in for powder coating on Tuesday so I will be in high gear or overdrive right out of the chute. For those people that are ordering for the SP4805 I will be getting a batch of M1-DA adapters for your DVI input this week as well, and will update the first post as to how much to add if you are interested in getting this bundled with the mount.

I may also be taking some time if available in the next few weeks to see if I might form up a hush box that works with the mount design. The mount can certainly take exponentially more weight and the hush box would not strain the mount at all. Will keep you posted on this as time permits. I also would have to get it back in the testing lab with some heat sensors etc.. to ensure that the unit is being properly ventilated and not causing the unit to not breath properly.

Thanks again

I had one whole batch to send out this week upon returning and picked up another from the powder coater yesterday... All the orders are now shipped and on their way except for the orders received this morning. The SP4805 is really generating a lot of volume with this configuration. You guys are making Fedex happy..

Robert,
I finally pulled the trigger on the 4805 and will be contacting you soon about one of your mounts with the 10" drop. Is it the same price as the 4.5"? I am especially interested in your thoughts regarding a hushbox for this pj. Any updates on where you are at on this?
Thanks.

Beechtom...

Tom : First the pricing info and ordering info is all on the very first post. The pricing for each of the standard drops either the 4.5", or the 10", or 15.5" is the same. I try and keep it as simple as possible even tho the cost is a bit different I feel that why bother making up an array of different pricing... different hardware ... shipping locations... It would drive me nuts... It is just more of a service to AVS members anyway, and not a cash flow generating item.

On the hush box ... I am still looking at it. Most of the projectors in my lineup don't really need a hush box so I am a bit at odds with putting out the design time and effort and funding the quantity that would be required to put it out there. Not sure how many people would want it, and how long it would take to go through an entire batch. Most people seem to buy the mount based on its reputation alone, coupled by the ridiculously low price for what they receive which includes shipping by Fedex and the best hardware. So I am still looking at it time permitting but do not have a feel for how many would actually want to spend more money for the hush box... and the hush box would have to be designed to be utilized by more than this one projector.... The reason it is so loud to begin with is the use of cheap bearings on the color wheel and on the fan. Precision machined parts are not inexpensive to produce... and it is understandable on a budget projector to some degree ... however I personally don't think the same way as Infocus on some of these issues. I prefer to put out the best and with the volumes try and reduce the costs. I bet it is costing just as much for people complaining about the noise as it would have costed to just put in more appropriate parts that didnt sound as abtrusive. Same as not sending cable adapters with the piece. It does cost more to cut the paperwork and do up an order for a simple adapter than what the adapter is worth. Unfortunately some of the line staff at Infocus knows this type of simple economics but like some of the line staff that have to deal with this stuff say at Infocus... tell it to the people with the mohogany desks..
Sorry about the rant ... but I just think that Infocus should be showing a much brighter financial statement by now.. and having an extensive manufacturing financial background,,,some of the goofy stuff makes me start spooing ......

So in a nut shell ..... I have a personal desire to help out with a hush box in this projector but don't have a good feel yet as to whether people would actually buy them... therefore leaving me with 200 hush boxes and packaging and further hardware to eat... time permitting I will still be taking a look at this...

Re: hush box

Thanks Mandarax. Actually, I wasn't as concerned about noise as the WAF of having a pj hanging from the ceiling in our living room. I thought with a hush box I would be able to blend it into the ceiling pretty well.

I understand your hesitancy in taking the time and effort to develop the hush box. If you end up doing that fairly soon I would be very interested in what you come up with.

As a current owner of one of your previous designs, I must say that it appears that you have really improved on the design. I am looking to change my mount from wall mounting to ceiling mounting, but need a different size pipe than the one that came with the kit. What dimensions would I need of the pipe itself? I think I need to extend the pipe by about 6 inches. What would I call the pipe so that I can get the right pipe from say Home Depot or other hardware stores. Can I just order the larger pipe from you?

You are correct sir!!! Got home at lunch to find a nice suprise waiting in the mailbox....happy happy happy :)

Very impressed with the entire package.. packaging A1.

The mount and hardware itself... A1+! Looks to be a simple looking but very functional unit.

Thanks much!!!!

If anyone is interested, I took some digital shots of the packaging and mount..can post (if Mandarax has no objections).

Edward... I do not use pipe.. never have ... and never will. the pieces that make up the mount are solid NC steel. If you want to go down another 5.5" you just need to replace the 2.5" NC cnc machined piece and order another 8" piece. These pieces are cnc machined , milled and drilled. Edward if you have one of the Grey units I may have some pieces in grey left. Best to email me. You will not find these pieces in a home depot... they are made up at a machine shop... using my program... and a cnc machining center.. then deburred..

RC .. I don't have any objections to taking pictures at all.

Ashwen... It is going out today... I really don't want to start posting tracking numbers here or use up the AVS bandwidth for shipping questions. They do go out the same day or next depending on payment. If this was not so you would see a flood of where is my mount... Best to use email robert@digital-visions.ca there has been too many that shipped to individually on each one to post the tracking number and concentrate on what my business does to put some food on the table which is sell projectors, screens, HT gear, furniture, audio, cables etc etc.. If the telephone number is put with the payment detail one can then use tracking info with fedex based on the telephone number. I am not saying never to email with an inquiry and I do try and get the tracking info out ... just isnt necessary to add this type of inquiry on the bandwidth of AVS.. they have been gracious enough to consent to my company offering these to AVS members so would not wish to increase the space used up by this type of question here and I do get back to everyone as time permits... but ship first and foremost before doing any email advises..

Tom ... I wouldnt worry too much about the WAF factor.... That is one of the best selling points of this mount... As good as it looks and with all the care that is taken to make it look esthetically pleasing the truth of the matter is that it is not really seen all that much in the assembled position. You should see the comments I get with the Epson 500 mount where I have cnc laser cut the "EPSON 500" right through the projector plate.. Women love it... They seem to be the biggest fan of this design actually. Even when they originally poo poo the idea of black.. when they see it they dont want to go back to white.. a weird reaction eh..

Mandarax,
Sorry, I wasn't referring to the WAF of your mount, it looks great! I'm just concerned how she'll like seeing a projector hanging 10" down from the ceiling is all! If I could enclose it and perhaps finish the box similar to the ceiling it would just be a cleaner install.
I'll probably just go with the mount and see if she says anything like "Think you can cover that up?"

For those that have the original mount here is a picture of what the machining looks like in the inside of the knee joint. There wasnt any complaints on the old one and until recently havent had the patience to take a macro digital picture... This pic isnt the greatest either but shows how the machining has changed... It has quite a bit more grip to it... I also end up having to cut out little magnets to mask it for powder coating otherwise the powder fills up the grooves and makes it smooth again.

So I got a question for the people that own this mount. Can the projector be tilted in the wall or ceiling mount configurations? I want to tilt my 4805 to move the picture higher up the wall and overcome the offset ratio.

mandarax
08-19-04, 04:14 PM
tn1.. In a wall mount config... you would put the projector at the height desired ...but still can tilt the projector on the diagonal, horizontal.. or vertical..

If you ceiling mount it you orient the knee joint to the direction and angle you want it and just lock it down with the allen wrench ... and still move horizontal on the ceiling mount plate.

Not sure if that answers your question...

mandarax, do you have, or can this be modified to fit an NEC LT240K?

mandarax
09-12-04, 11:24 AM
Davey ... I have a specific mount just for that chassis... One of my best pieces of work...

The mounting plate is formed specifically for that chassis which as you know the mounting points are not spaced evenly and also the bottom of the projector is at two tiers or levels.. I had to make a fixture when forming to keep the hole assignments at the tolerance of within 1/1000 of an inch. I really like the NEC products and the LT 240K is an exceptional piece for the money it is going for.

Here is an old pic... The mounts in the pic are not in the powder coat finish in black satin but a hammered metal finish I tried out and dismissed because I just do not have the time to do these up and the quality of the black satin powder coat is a much better finish from a factory than I can produce in any event ..

The pic is old and it does not show the black T handles that are now used at the knee joint and the black alloy vs stainless capscrew used as well. It did help to show the shape of the projector plate having an alternate color than black... black is the best for a ht room... and the black on the powder coat finish is fairly difficult to depict with a digital photo..

One other change that you will note on these is that the welds are no longer visible as I had started some time ago cnc laser cutting the hex shape right into the plate and built a fixture to suit where it is welded on the back side of the plate and is invisible.. any excess is grinded off.. It actually ended up being a stronger weld as well ...

I don't have any updated pictures of the NEC chassis with the changes.. I had to get rid of my demo unit HT1100 because everyone was choosing the BenQ 8700+ over it in the showroom and I thought I was doing more harm than good by showing it..

Robert,

Just moved in and finally had a chance to put your X1 mount together. Very nice looking unit.

Just wanted to report that the allen key is about two sizes too large for the three small machine screws attatching the plate to the projector. Since I've heard no other mention of this I assume it's an anomoly.

Am heading out to the garage to scour my toolbox(es) for a proper size.

Regards,
Mike

mandarax
09-15-04, 04:26 PM
Mike ...

The allen key is actually for tightening at the knee joint.. You do not need to tighten the three capscrews more than by hand on the projector plate.. In fact I would highly not recommend it.. he projector is not going anywhere.. and it is only a brass insert into a plastic shell on the projector. IE crank it too tight and it will or could damage the case..

So put the allen key in the cap screw that goes into the knee joint .. and leave it there so you dont have to look for it later..

short answer tho is that you can use paypal for payment at that same address..

The next few that are flying out of here will be with the thicker 12ga ceiling plate... Picked up the new batch today.... this chassis will reach over 3000 of these mounts only to AVS'ers when this last batch is sold..

they are now in South America.. Mexico.. Every state in the USA .. Every European Country.. New Zealand .. Australia.. Singapore.. Thailand.. Dubai .. South Africa ..

Zero advertising.. mostly through word of mouth.. zero profit is the sad part but a lot of fun.

elernie... I show that it was delivered yesterday..

gonnapenna... It has shipped... better to ask in email for the tracking number as I don't think it is a good idea to post tracking numbers on this site..

There was a two day delay when I ran out on or about the 13th... The welder that I was using came into work on his vacation and some words were exchanged to his boss and was let go. No one knew where the fixtures were and the other welder is not licenced for tig welding. So I had to scramble to get a new fixture made and get an alternate fab shop to do the welding after getting them to do up a few samples. Doing the welding such that the welds are invisible is more demanding than the old style..

The new fixture is made... It actually turned out great with the welding shop that I am now using. The lead times are much more reliable.

After all was done I decided that it was best to use an alternate machining company as well. The welding and machining facilities are owned by close friends and decided that it was better to go to a business where it is a bit easier to be more demanding. This was also finished and it also turned out to be better. I am an extremely picky beotch when it comes to how these are made up. There was nothing wrong with my friends business but it makes life a bit easier when I can treat the suppliers like suppliers.

Dave... Thanks for the kind words ... I am not sure if the others are over priced or if this is way underpriced. When you see the difference of what you are getting I think you will go with the underpriced theory.

Since going with the black satin I have not shown the extentions when people have high ceilings ..

Here is a pic of the Epson 500 mount with a long extention.. Black is difficult to take decent pics of. especially with a lcd camera technology.
But it will give you an idea of what it looks like if you have to go with an extra long drop. The pic does not show the cnc laser cutting of the Epson 500 too well ... I tried using a plasma cutter and it turned out not so good,, it could not even do the ceiling plates near as smooth as the laser so it was dropped.

I am also looking into getting some long extention for cabling run drops that will be housed in an identical ceiling plate and be flexible adjustable tubing to the projector. Will keep up to date on the progress of this.

I haven't bought the mount yet (waiting for a response from Mandarax for shipping to Spain) but I thought that someone in this forum may be able to answer a question regarding the X1 (I own now) and 4805 (likely purchase within next 6 months). If I mount the X1 now and then switch to the 4805 will there be a significant vertical shift in the image? I'm currently projecting onto a white wall so a small move will be ok. Thanks!

09-22-04, 10:33 AM
I just hooked up my 4805 at my friend's place (he has an X1) and there was virtually no shift at all ... anything that does take place can be remedied by the zoom/focus. If you're using a wall you'll be fine. He had a custom screen on his wall surrounded by black felt so if there were to be a noticeable shift there would be issues as his screen is fixed in place.

Bottom line is you should be fine :)

Mandarax, I got the mount earlier this week. Great mount, but I am having a slight problem. The bolts that go on the mounting plate into the projector are not screwing in all the way. I did a search and it seems like this problem has come up before, but I couldn't find the solution. So 1 of the bolts will screw all the way down, but 2 of them gap off the projector. I am screwing the bolts down with my fingers as of right now. Do you suggest getting an allen wrench and tightening them all the way down or maybe try to find some kind of rubber washer to close up the gap?

Nevermind found my answer in post #870.

They ship same day or next depending on when payment is received..

jay-madrid.. I need a specific address to quote Europe orders... and I do have shipped out a mount to Spain recently ... maybe it got screwed up .. but if you send a specific address you will get back the pricing the same day.. It will be shipped via Express and will be of course slightly more due to a two day shipping to Europe.. but my discounts are quite good and these are passed on. On the shift it is not all that significant .. I think it is 1.2 to 1.27...(X1 vs the 4805) however the numbers on the site are a bit screwy and conflict.. one has to note that the distance from the screen will make a difference and the number given is at or near the midpoint and it is also from the center of the lens..

I will put the excel spreadsheet in the next post for the 4805 and I think this is the most current one and is corrected.

tn1.. the problem is with the chassis on the X1 ... these remember are made and assembled in China... The specs for the cap screws are from the tech sheets from Infocus. You will note that there is no logical reason why one would fit and the others do not. This was coming up about 1 in 750 units that went out.. Given that it is not likely to be resolved or can reoccur I did reluctantly start supplying a shorter cap screw that should eliminate this from happening again without any detrimental effects. That brass insert in the projector is one of the flimsiest I have ever seen on any projector. Compare the brass insert on the supplied T-Handle to the one in the projector and you will see what I mean.

DO NOT USE AN ALLEN WRENCH TO TIGHTEN THE CAPSCREWS... (the ones that goes into the projector plate) The projector plate is exponentially stronger than the chassis of the projector.. Take a look at the brass inserts in the bottom of the projector ... they are just seated in the plastic. Any hard tightening could crack the case... Some have stated that there was just some plastic (flash) around the casing that prohibited it from tightening ... but I wouldnt take a chance.. It is or was just a PITA problem from poor quality control on the chassis assembly. In any event the capscrews that I use now do go through the distance of the brass insert so that is still as good as it gets... The capscrews are one of the highest grade black alloy and the likelihood that these are stripped is about triple that of winning the lottery.

Reminder.... Please put your telephone number in the order information for the courier,, I do have to put in a telephone number for UPS and it may as well be yours. Don't worry I am not going to call you or give out your telephone number.

In the interest of brevity I am just going to put in the URL that you need to look at the pertinent numbers relevant to offsets, throw distance, brightness etc.. etc..

If it is modified it will be more efficient to have the URL than to provide the spread sheet.. which is not an allowed format in any event...

The attached file is one with the Epson 500 but shows that you can actually make it shorter than the 4.5" by going through the ceiling plate..

David..

Too late.. is was delivered yesterday.. shipped on the 20th. They do not ship on Sundays.

I don't hold the shipments for the telephone number I just prefer the telephone number to be included with the original order.. If I get completely bogged down I can't get to everyones tracking number and still need to do a bit of fooling around with the software so it sends it out direct. You can note that if you have included the telephone number that you can always phone UPS and get them to check it by your telephone number.

I got it! Thanks ... Eichenwald is gonna get her ass fired. That's the second time something has shown up and she hasn't told me :)

The mount looks great and is solid as a rock :)

David.. lol..

Just glad you got it safe and sound.. Maybe she is very good looking and wants to see your theater room set up.. I would definitely ask her if there is a motive before getting her ass fired.

Speaking of getting your ass fired on a completely non related topic... I watched the apprentice last night for the first time and I thought that Donald Trump firing that girl was in such poor taste and completely unprofessional on public tv. This girl had a bit of an anxiety attack for a few minutes and those other cliche girls calling her crazy just seemed a bit well crazy. I felt completely disgusted the way this was handled. very cheezy ... If I was Trumps boss I would fire his ass for publicly disgracing someone and potentially harming their future potential as a human being.
I would ask for his resignation and then mount it on my wall.. I have to hand it to the show tho.. brilliant 1 hr commercial for toothpaste.. a commercial within a commercial.. maybe I am too sensitive .. but that is my rant for this quarter..

This last batch is running out quickly.... I also think the X1's are finito...

Just the X1 a's and X2's now.

I'll keep running the mounts for the SP4805's for at least another run. Then see how they are selling..

I will be doing at least one more batch after this one runs out... to service the late X1's... and also to service the very high demand for the SP4805.

If I stop shipping same day or next I will advise on the thread... When I stop doing this chassis I will also post this on the first thread as well.
There is still about 70 some going out a week of this chassis... mostly now for SP4805 users.

I got the mount this week! It's a great piece of hardware! I also had a problem initially with one screw not going all the way, however, I swapped with another one and for some reason, the issue is now fixed. All three seem to be going in and the plate is flush with the projector. I suspect I am not to overtighten the screws, right? I only turn them by hand.

I now have some dilemma regarding how to position the mount and my DIY screen. I read in some other post that generally people fix the screen first and then the position the mount. However, if I need to fix the mount on stud as recommended, should I not fix the mount first and then the screen?

Also, I am going to fix the mount on the wall instead of ceiling. I wonder if anyone has adapted the the spreadsheet posted earlier for this mount? I would appreciate if anyone can share their experience of how they mounted their screens and mounts. That's hopefully going to help me get it right the first time! Thanks!

Xpress, you must be a newbie like I am. I just put up the mount and a pull down screen last week. I don't know if this what the experts will tell you to do, but I put up the mount first then the screen second. I mounted the projector in a stud and then put the screen approximately where the image fell. Should be easier for you because you probably got a solid frame. I had to deal with the inprecise natural of the pull down screen. Also, I used the infocus spreadsheet (came from the 4805 thread) as a rough calculation of where things were suppose to go. You can always use the zoom feature to dial in the exact screen size.

Hi express.

There is a number of ways to do it and get it right... One of the things about using a spreadsheet is that the image offset is at a certain distance from screen to lens.. Using the calculator assistance is a good guide when it is correct... The earlier calculator for the SP4805 had some screwy numbers in it so make sure you get the latest one. The references on the calculator are at about the midpoint of the min max distance for the projector to the center of lens. So make sure you account for the depth of the projector and the fact that there is space between the projector and the wall.

Everyone is a bit different with their priorities so this is a general response.. ie some have some gear they need to clear at the lower portion of the screen or other obstacles..

But my priority would be to make sure that the screen is in the general area of the ideal height... Your eye level is somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 from the bottom of the the viewing screen area.

Using your distance calculator that includes the offset should get you in a close enough range.... but if you are at the max ... the offset could be a bit more.. and if you are at the min.. the offset could be a bit less.. If your floor is level a simple acid test can be done to see exactly what the offset is.. IE just put the projector at one end of the room allowing for 2.5" clearance from the wall to the projector ... make sure it is level and measure what the offset is..

To ensure you casting an image that is not skewed measure the diagonal on the image... measure the screen on both diagonals.. they should be the same measurement exactly. There is also patterns you could use to assist with this... I cheat and use a device used to test geometry on CRTs which makes things go a bit faster.. But we are only talking about seconds of differences in time. and I do some other tests with the same gear.

So when you know what height you wish the projector to be at you can translate that to where you want to mount the ceiling plate to translate to the desired position. I would not keystone the projector just due to not being able to hit a stud.. My strong preference would be to have the screen moved a few inches to avoid keystoning.

So once you make up the assemble for the Wall/ Ceiling mount and thread in the piece that goes into the .. in your instance the wall plate.. line it up so that piece that screws into the wall plate has the machined piece oriented to be such that the capscrew that joins the pieces goes in horizontally. There is no need to have this perfect ... just ball park it visually.

Then put the capscrews into the projector plate and put in the smaller cnc knee joint piece.. again just eyeball it to mate with the assembly wall plate and cnc piece...

Since the wall plate is already in place... ie you screwed in the wall plate to the stud and snapped over the cap to conceal the screw.. (one of my favorite and simplest mods) all you do is bring the projector assembly up to the wall assembly and insert the cap screw.. The projector will free hang... no arm fatigue just take the t handle.. You will note that there is two lock washers.. you can put one on either side of the assembly.. just put one in the middle... or to be truthful you dont even need them.. They just offer a bit more gripping ooomph.. once you have eyeballed everything is looking level you can start up the projector and see how it looks for alignment.. Do the measure test on the diagonal again to see where you may be off.

Also test the image with a level to see if it is horizontally correct... Ie not dipping on one side.. The measurements can be correct but the image be up or down on one side.. a diagonal adjustment required..

If the diagonal adjustment as aforehand mentioned is needed .. this is accomplished at the point where the longer cnc joint goes into the wall plate.. YOu will note that by turning at this point the projector can actually be turned ... You could leave some reference point at the screen location to get this right even at the start.. but just turn it to be accurate and lock down this diagonal adjustment with the additional nut that is on the cnc machined arm at the wall plate..

Horizontal adjustment... You will note that the same configuration with the additional nut at the projector plate can be turned ... Again all that is required is simply turn to position and lock it down with the nut...

Vertical adjustment.. At the t-handle you can swivel the projector up and down.. again just put it into position and tighten at the t-handle..

When you have to take the projector down to clean etc.. all that is required is to loosen at the t-handle location and remove the screw that joins the two assemblies.. and you already figured out that all you do when reassembling is to reattach and swing it up to your screen height.. the other two adjustments for diagonal and horizontal are going to be intact.. so it will only take a few seconds to take down and reinstall.

This is pretty detailed but you will find that if you know what you are trying to achieve and leave any anxiety at bay ... you will have it all up and level and perfect in less than ten minutes... If it takes 15 .. so what .. all the tools for tightening are included ..as well as the driver bit for the screws for the wall/ceiling plate.

One item that may be useful and is a good toy unless you shine it in someones eyes is a laser... you dont need a full level and can pick up these for 10 dollars or so..

The above is for wall mounting..

The ceiling is a bit different... there is three different drops that are standard ... from ceiling plate to the projector... and serve 99.9 % of the ceiling heights that are common.. The drops are 4.5" , or 10" , or 15.5"

The ceiling assembly is the same..ie make the last assembly at the T handle.. just orient the knee joint angle to affect whatever adjustment you wish to make and lock it in..

Hope this helps...

Cheers

Mandarax,

Thanks for the detailed instructions.

Should I take it that you recommend fixing the mount first and then the screen?

BTW, your "DV" reads the wrong way round on the plate when it is assembled to the projector! Not sure if that is intentional, but just thought I'd mentioned it.

John.. I am trying to get this set up automatically... and it kind of depends on how much time I have... I just switch with UPS and their software is not working too good yet... and also has a couple of little trails on it that I do not want on my pc... But it did ship...

xpress... The DV stands for my company "Digital Visions".. and it depends of course which way you are standing in relationship to the projector... Kind of like saying I am standing in front of the CN tower..

I think you would find it easier generally to do the projector first and then the screen... but don't forget that I mentioned taking care of the screen height first... In fact I would watch the videos at different heights for a bit to see what your preference on screen height is.. get the right height ..it is fairly important..

I want to order this mount from you but I want to make sure that i get the right configuration. I have an X1 and very low basement ceiling height (6'7" to the drop ceiling and 7'0" to the bottom of the joists).

The Joists are parallel with my screen so i figured i could attach your mount using the wall connection to the Joist. The rod attached to the plate would pass through an acoustic ceiling tile. I would want the bottom of the X1 to be approximately flush with my ceiling to minimize the impact of the off-set.

What do you recommend?

mandarax
10-02-04, 10:20 AM
1234 ...

I recommend that you reverse the common Wall mount pieces like this pic..

IE .. the long cnc machined piece installed into the wall plate for the short one and have the longer cnc machined piece hang down vertically and go through the ceiling tile.. Your joists run parallel the screen.. you can attach to either side of the joist to suit ..

You can actually just make up the assembly without the projector.. mark the holes for the plate to the drop area desired ... and you will be laughing at how easy this was..

If you want you can put a small level right on the projector plate and do the alignment once screwed into the joist. Measure where to penetrate your drop ceiling for the opening..

Cheers

mandarax,

I would like one of these for my new X1. How do I go about ordering? Do I just send payment via paypal?

I also wanted to say thank you for doing this. Most of the half way decent mounts I've seen go for at least $170. Your doing a great service to this community for offering a low cost alternative. Thanks again!!

Tonight, I did a test run to see where I should place the mount. I have 8 ft ceiling in my basement, and I think I am going to mount as high as possible on the wall. Using the official calculator and allowing for the difference between the infocus mount and yours, I think I the ceiling to screen distance is going to be around 20" for a 92 diagonal screen. ( looks like there is 1" difference between your mount and the infocus regarding ceiling to plate distance- that's with the wall plate fixed vertically)

Because I was holding the projector/mount against the wall, it was hard to make adjustments, but I think I got enough of an idea of how it's going to look like. I am glad I did not fix the screen yet!

BTW, how tight should I be screwing the rods in the plates? There is a little play right now, which will make adjustments easier, will it be ok to leave it like that or should I try to tighten the nuts using a wrench or something?

I can't wait for longer cables to come, so I can reclaim my coffee cable!

Chris ... All the ordering info is on the very first post... I will keep updating that first post if anything changes..

Lowest cost for the highest quality material, best processes, best finish, and the very best hardware, and the easiest to assemble..
***************************************************
Express ... the calculator is no different from my mount to any other mount.. The calculator at Infocus is a general guide... and is the measurement from the center of the lens... It has nothing to do with a mount... and with the wide range of min and max throw there is a difference for the image offset from min to max.. They cannot put in every dynamic image offset imaginable... It is just a guide they provide ... not a cast in granite number..

The cnc machined rods are actually tightened with the additional nuts preassembled on the cnc rod... Since these are not little baby nuts there is generally enough meat on the nut to keep it tight without tightening... or just hand tightening ... I have very strong hands and this kind of question becomes kind of hard to answer... My neighbor next door is very weak and I doubt he could hand torque this better than a fit girl that was 12 yrs old... If you want to use a wrench to tighten that is not going to do anything and you could go as hard as you want with the nuts on the rods.. You certainly are not going to hurt it... I suggest that you use something to cover the nut tho so that it does not damage the finish if you are going to tighten with a wrench..

Mandarax,

I sent you a payment through PayPal for a InFocus 4805 mount yesterday. Should I have waited for a confirmation that you have additional mounts to sell? Let me know if my order is a problem. I need one for this projector with a 15.5" stem to attached above my drop ceiling. Either way, please confirm if there is an issue. Thanks.

Just wanted to post some feedback - I finally fixed the mount on the wall yesterday, after receiving my 50" component cable. After all the worrying how/where to place it, I got it done in less than 15 mins.

In my situation, I could not use both wooden screws since I could only use the wooden screw at top, but I used one of the toggle bolts you provided for the bottom hole - it's really great that you provided all the hardware!

The adjustments to get the projected screen right was easy, and after tightening all the nuts with just my hands, the whole thing stands pretty solidly.

Now that I have the projected mounted almost 2 feet further behind compared to where it was on the coffee table, I can have a screen that is 110 diagonal - unexpected benefit (or may be not!) since I was initially going to have the screen about 90" diagonal... I was wowed again since I first got the projector since the picture was so much bigger than I was used to! But probably will get back to the 90" diagonal since I already built a screen that size.

One thing that I would like to note is the space behind the projector was kinda of tight - I would liked to have an extra inch or so-currently the component cables are rather tight against the wall...

Are you planning on producing new plates as new projectors come on the market in the future? I am sure I will be upgrading from the 4805 at some point and it would be nice to be able to mount the new one for the cost of the plate only.

Thanks again! The whole package was superb!!

Regards

Express..

15 minutes isnt bad... since you had to screw around with the alternate pieces.. I know what it is like trying to get all my gear together and wish everyone supplied all the hardware and the tools to tighten... I hate getting excited and have to go and get a piece of hardware or a special tool... The screws use a Robertson head.. and the bit that is supplied is for the head of the screws going into the ceiling/wall plate. Robertson was a very innovative character that was in my area. He hated the Philips head screws for obvious reasons and it caught on here so much we do not use Philips screws any longer... So in some small way I am hoping they do catch on. Given the price of steel lately tho I may have to revert back to the Philips for U.S. orders as this is becoming extremely tight. So far I have had to switch to UPS.. and boost the order batches up to double to keep the cost down. OH yeah... If you do have an alternate projector purchase in the future it is likely that I will have a plate for it. Especially if I endorse the product.. and yes all you would have to do is spin off the old plate and buy a new plate portion only.. Most of the dollars are actually in the cnc machined pieces that make up the arms..

Max .... No if I don't have them in inventory I will state this on the forum.. if there is going to be a delay I will post what the delay is... Every order that was received prior to today as of the time of this post is already with UPS.
So your order is already in the hands of the UPS brown truck.. with some guy wearing brown shorts and shirt.

cgram.. it is already gone... There is about 20 some odd on this chassis going out daily and since there is no money in it I have to concentrate some time for the screen and projector orders and accessories etc etc that do put some scraps on my table... I am waiting for the UPS Connect software to do this automatically. Since changing from Fedex I have been extremely patient with UPS to get this in gear and have it sent automatically as doing the advise individually sucks up some time. I am very sensitive to having this put in place and have whipped UPS a few times already... As it is they keep sending me piddlie squat for supplies less than a few days worth at a time which is driving me koo koo.. and further the rates negotiated were not set in place yet... Their response has been to date... "We are trying to get it going"
So please forgive me if I don't get back to everyone but trust you understand..

I am going to have to put these on their own website I think and just have it set up with the auto reply there.. In the interim I do try and keep my time to shipping every order as a priority to get it out the door before starting to send notices about shipping.... Again you will note that if you provided the telephone number with the paypal advise you can call UPS and get the info with the telephone number. The only reason the telephone number is put down is for the courier.

Thanks guys... here is toast to having surpassed 3000 in a little over a year.. You can thank Alan from AVS for allowing me to do these up for cost to AVS members.. and to all my suppliers that use their fine cnc machinery, and powder coat facility. and to my girls that package these babies up and do some of the paperwork. Everyone still seems like they are having fun.

Cheers

Robert

I do not expect to run out for quite some time... my last batch is drying up a bit but I have another batch of 400 that will be cut on Tuesday.

We are now officially over the 3000 mark on this chassis alone..

What's up Mandarax

I'm just writing to ask if my mount has shipped. I wrote you a message on Monday morning with the drop amount (4") that I needed. The main reason I ask is because I tried calling UPS to see if I could get the tracking status based on the phone number from the order, and was told that they cannot give out that information without the tracking number itself. So no dice in that regard. I'm not in a huge hurry to get the thing, just curious to get a confirmation that it shipped. And my info:

if that helps.

Thanks! And I look forward to mounting up!
