Maps are up!
I say that I do perfer the WSFA weather map over the WAKA map. It seems the stations like to put their logo in the space where the Florida panhandle is. And, since the WSFA logo is not as tall as the WAKA logo, the map of AL doesn't protrude into the screen real estate as much. Plus, WSFA grounds their logo at the very bottom of the screen. WAKA gives up a bit of space at the bottom before starting the whole mess.
Of course, if we were voting, WNCF and WCOV win hands down. No maps!
Ch4 Dothan has NO maps up, Ch32 Has NO maps up, Only Ch12 and Ch 8 both Analog and Digital. Tonight Im watching Ch4 screw Ch12.
Meanwhile Im am Sitting at my Window WATCHING for the Tstorm. Isnt that what werew supposed to do? Its a Tstorm Watch. I can understand Tornado Warning, Hurrican Warning but a Thunderstorme WATCH? Since when is a Thunderstorm Watch important?
Sorry Ch 32 Just scrolled a banner and killed the Sound on the nEWS to tell us there is a Tstorme Watch. I guess we cant read and listen at the same time but at least no maps. The must not be able to afford the graphics generator.
The must not be able to afford the graphics generator.
C.S.I. in HD has no maps. Woo Hoo! I wonder if the HD with optional map technology costs a good deal of money. I'm sure if they could put maps on the HD, they would.

Shut your mouth. I have been watching Ch4.1 HD no maps their all night. I bet it doesnt even rain tonight. Maby thats why its a Tstorm watch. Watch and see if it rains. Wooppiiee

Yes..it costs an additional +$50k to do that. But don't fret, it's coming..once one station puts it on over the HD, the others will follow suit. Depsite what we engineers want or recommend. So enjoy it while you can. :)
But no plan anytime soon for WAKA..of course that may change if the weathergeek
ever gets HDTV.. :(
Thanks! I thought money might be the reason.
Would you guys like to create a home theater club?

BUT not on the HD feed, which begins at 8:00. 4 would have had em up, but the
watch/warn counties were out of their coverage area. I spoke with the WAKA meteorologists and told them NOT to break in to the HD with a "special report"...
not to be confused with the graphics.... one of those "special reports" can go on and on and completely block out the program. BTW, did it even rain last night??????????????
bdfox18doe 03-10-06, 10:02 AM Yes Mark, it did. Here in Charlotte, that is..
Wetumpka had a nice rain.
Scott Smith 03-11-06, 12:12 AM Hot off the Press Montgomery Alabama E* customers and potental DBS customers.
With the Deployment of Echo X comming in mid April all Montgomery SD locals will be moving from the 105 slot to the 110 slot.
This means all SD E* channels can be received with a Dish 500.
Since the Super Dish can be ellimnated this should mean all HD channels can be received with a Dish 1000.
Dish 1000 sees 110, 119, and 129. All 61.5 HD channels are also on 129 so A super dish, dish 300 and a DPP44 switch can be ellimnated and just a Dish 1000 installed cleaning up your satellite farms. :D :D
Is it just me or does the HD signal from WCOV FOX cut in and out about once every 20 seconds?
Is it just me or does the HD signal from WCOV FOX cut in and out about once every 20 seconds?
Must be you. Rock solid at my house.
Grandpa Train 03-12-06, 07:57 PM Is it just me or does the HD signal from WCOV FOX cut in and out about once every 20 seconds?
Was not just you..same at my house..but watchable.
Was not just you..same at my house..but watchable.
I thought so, I watched the signal level fluctuate the whole day. About once every 20 or 30 seconds it would dip down to the point where the picture would pixelate for about half a second. But, like you said, it was still watchable.
I wanted to check with everybody to make sure that, for some reason, my receiver started acting up. I'm sure it hadn't because all the other channels come in fine.
I'm over on Vaughn Rd between the E. BLVD and Bell Rd. The signal from WCOV is usually awesome. However, as luck would have it, it started to deteriorate as soon as NASCAR started! ha ha
Brings back memories of WSFA and their substandard broadcast of NASCAR all of last year!
bdfox18doe 03-13-06, 12:29 PM Shon, try a rescan during FOX network programming the next time you see this, that may take care of it.
There is some information there at that time that isn't preset during local time which tends to affect some receivers.
The problem was also present on Knology's cable feed of the race.
bdfox18doe 03-13-06, 03:23 PM Guess that gives Phil a starting place..
Any complaints on WAKA on Cable?
WAKA is A OK...Speaking of WAKA I wish they would broadcast different BB games on analog and HD during the NCAA March Madness.
I think we discussed that issue before during football season. The answer we got was that the stations are tied down contractually and cannot broadcast two different games, even though they do have the HD and SD feed. But, they can speak for themselves.
Appreciate the response and confirmation of the WCOV problem. Hopefully Phil can get the bug worked out for the next race! Gotta love HD sports! :-)
bdfox18doe 03-14-06, 08:07 AM Yes..we are NOT free to pick and choose which games we carry where. It doesn't work that way.
I just tuned in to WCOV FOX's 20-1 (HD) and 20-2 (SD) over-the-air signal. Both are suffering from severe signal fluctuation resulting in even more dropouts and pixelation than this past Sunday during NASCAR. The broadcast was "watchable" on Sunday. Now it is nearing the "unwatchable" limits.
I took bdfox's advice and deleted all channels and rescanned. It didn't help. I am almost 100% certain the problem resides on the station's end. The other four HD stations come in fine with zero dropouts....currently. And, I have done nothing to disturb my setup, FOX was working fine about two weeks ago, now it is awful.
If anybody has any advice, I'd be happy to hear it!
P.S. Isn't it typical. We talked about WSFA's inability to broadcast a good consistent NASCAR race and couldn't wait for it to move to FOX. Now, FOX is screwed up. :-)
If anybody has any advice, I'd be happy to hear it!
What sort of antenna setup do you have there? I was watching at the time of your post and it was fine here. I have the el-cheapo Radio Shack yagi at 20ft above ground, with about 40ft. of feedline. You know, we've had a lot of high winds lately. Have you checked the orientation of the antenna?
bdfox18doe 03-15-06, 07:44 AM Phil, what version code is in splicer?
And Shon, what receiver are you using again?
I have an even more el-cheapo setup. I have the Samsung SIR-T451 receiver and an indoor TERK HDTVi Antenna Pro. Both have worked great for the 9 or 10 months that I have them. Like I said, FOX came in great till last Sunday when the cutting in and out started. I didn't watch anything from then till last night and the behavior was the same. It got really bad about 8:30 last night, I just switched over to the regular cable feed.
The other channels, WAKA, WSFA, and WNCF come in fine. I played around with the direction and placement, and got the same result.
thanks
Phil, what version code is in splicer?
2.0b12, of course.
Shon's problem is probably the trees beginning to leaf out. At this time it is not possible to get reliable reception on WCOV with an indoor antenna.
bdfox18doe 03-15-06, 01:10 PM Plus a Samsung Receiver.. :<(
And yes, with an indoor antenna, all bets are off. Could be a change electrically in the house causing interference as well.
Plus a Samsung Receiver.. :<(
I have one of those Samsung receivers at work. It even gets Ch. 55!
bdfox18doe 03-15-06, 02:00 PM Got rid of all of ours but one...
Shon's problem is probably the trees beginning to leaf out. At this time it is not possible to get reliable reception on WCOV with an indoor antenna.
Help me understand this. Per antennaweb.org, the distance to the WCOV transmitter is about 4.5 miles. The distance to WAKA is about 36 miles. (I don’t know if this data is reliable.) I can receive WAKA with the meter pegged to full strength, yet the closer station, WCOV, experiences signal fluctuation due to budding trees? This was not a problem last summer when the trees were in full-bloom.
I know an indoor antenna is not an optimum setup. The truth is that I bought the whole setup as an interim solution till the cable company started to carry all the HD signals. As of now, WCOV is the only one not carried on cable. So, I have to rely on the OTA signal.
Anyway, back to the issue. I guess I can see your point that trees and electrical interference could be causing the problem. But, I can not understand how this was not a problem before Sunday, specifically last summer. Plus, I can not understand how a station further away comes in stronger than the closer station.
Thanks again for y’all help! I’m learning!
Plus, I can not understand how a station further away comes in stronger than the closer station.
WAKA's antenna height is more than three times that of WCOV's. WAKA's power is 1000 times more than WCOV's. However, with an outside antenna at your location those extremes wouldn't matter to you.
Scott Smith 03-16-06, 12:33 AM Speaking of AKA I noticed last night during NCIS and The Unit the signal strength was down to 70%.
I double checked my antenna to make sure I was peaked and I was.
This AM without touching anything it was on 79%
I don't know if it was atmospheric or they had the power rolled back.
Signal never dropped out or pixilated but it just showed low signal.
The budding trees are causing that.
LOL :-)
Grandpa Train 03-16-06, 01:43 PM KUDOS to WAKA..they are showing two different games..one on SD station and another on HD station. Good going.
Way to go WAKA!!! Thanks...

Special contractual circumstances allow this. Do it when we can. Very tricky
at our end with current CBS stuff. Enjoy.
The CBS coverage of the NCAA tournament looks great. Especially the first half of the Alabama/UCLA game. Don't know if Bama can hang with them for another half
but "sweet sixteen" sounds good.

I switched over to the SD channel but another game was showing. I guess I switched while they were doing a live update of another game. Still, seems like
the game with a SEC team should have been in HD for this area (from another forum it was in HD in other areas of the country). Of course we complain when
they show the same game on the HD and SD channels. Now that there are different games I complain that the one I want isn't on the HD channel.

bdfox18doe 03-19-06, 07:41 PM Be patient, young Jedi!
larrylwill 03-20-06, 09:10 PM Ch 12 is running a squesed picture, a scrolling banner across the bottem, a Map of the county that is hanging in what little picture we have left, Tornado warning, Storm Warnings, and Tstorm warnings, NOT ENOUGH, they break into the last 2 minuits of Deal or no deal to Tell you what they are showing you and they were not even ready and had to ask each other what to tell us. They couldnt wait 1 more minuit so we could see what the guy chose. their in their glory. Both the SD anbalog and HD feeds are affected. What a bunch of morons.
Does anybody have cable? Did the Texan take the deal or not? What was the offer?
larrylwill 03-20-06, 09:39 PM Now their running a banner admitting they inturupted the last minuit, and to know what happened we now have to watch Ch 12 news at 10pm. (in a pigs eye).
Monday night WAKA missed the endings of 3 straight shows because of weather bulletins. Did anybody else notice that they did not interrupt or miss any of their commercials?
larrylwill 03-20-06, 10:27 PM I see that WSFA is running Medium in SD I assume because they cant put the weather map on the HD feed. I also notice that Waka HD is off the air, I can only pick up the analog feed. Seems that every time it rains their digital goes down.
Im watching Ch 4 Dothan now and they have a smaller map but they are running a banner almost continuously telling you the names of the counties that are colored in. I guess because they think most people don't know what county their in.
What I find bad is all the local networks now have 4 stations. One Analog, One SD. One HD, and 1 Weather and they find it necessary to screww them all up with Weather. So whats more important to them? All they need to do is post a small notice to tune to the weather station on the SD and HD station, because if you have digital you get them all.
WAKA-DT off the air. That explains why I only got 10 mins of King of Queens on my DVR. I'm going to have to start DVR'ing the analog broadcasts as backup.
I do not think (even with all the interuptions, banners, etc.) that the local weather guys still know what is going on with the weather.
for instance: I was listening to the police scanner at about 8:00 or so. The police, or a volunteer police spotter, reported a tornado on the ground around the Bullock county line. I didn't hear Rich Thomas say anthing about it till about 8:45.
Now, granted, there may have been multiple tornados and I could have some mixed up. However, it doesn't make the local weather guys very credible. I can't remember any weather guy interupting around 8:00 or shortly thereafter informing us of certain doom.
It's just interesting. I'm not going to rely on these guys anyway. As long as the internet is up, I'll read the National Weather Service radar myself. The police channels offer way more current information than these guys will ever be able to provide.

They have a fiber feed from the studio of the digital, so it shouldn't have gone off, since our
trouble was at the transmitter. UNLESS they were not using it. Ran into that issue with Charter and the analog about a year ago. Thought we had been on fiber for about 4 years, but went off the air one day and discovered they never hooked it up at their end. If you can confirm we went off, for how long, and that
you are a Charter guy, I'll check into it. WSFA DT went off about the same time as
we did last night, but returned about 10 minutes later. This via Knology. Do you
know if that happened with Charter? Thanks.
No, I can't speak to exact times the DT feed from WAKA or WSFA was off. I was out of the house from about 6:45 till about 7:45. I just noticed, like blp, that King of Queens, which I had scheduled to record from 7:00 to 7:30 timed out after 13 minutes. I had it setup to record from channel 782 on Charter.
I'm not even sure it was the station's problem. It could be something Charter did, or an electrical disturbance or something with the storm. I do know the electricity never went off...all the clocks are still showing correct time.
I just thought it was coincidental that the same thing happened to blp.
Hope this helps!
bdfox18doe 03-21-06, 05:33 PM You guys do run surge and UPS protection on you HDTV and DVR's? Right?
If not, take a look here:

Make sure you get a "SMART" ups.. that produces a true-sinewave output.
I have several here at home.. :)
the 700 VA smart UPS are good buys..

Yeah, I got the projection LCD TV running through the UPS, but not the DVR. I probably ought to go ahead and plut that in too. Good point. Thanks!

Here in Wetumpka, Brighthouse doesn't carry WCOV in HD.
Do those of you that have cable in Montgomery, Knowlogy, Charter, etc. have it in HD?
Knology in Montgomery carries all of the locals in HD. They were fast on showing them as soon as each went live.
Charter show the big three. FOX and PBS are not in HD on Charter. However, I think Charter is screwing up the CBS signal somehow. We discussed earlier how the DVR of King of Queens was cut off during the storm. Now, more recently, my DVR of The Amazing Race stopped recording 32 minutes into the show. I don't know what is causing it. The King of Queens can be attributable, I suppose, to the storm. But, nothing was going on during the Amazing Race when it cut off. Additionally, I am not experiencing this problem when DVR'ing any other channel.
Apparantly, Knowlogy is carrying WCOV but Brighthouse and Charter aren't.
My understanding is that WCOV wants to charge the cable services to carry their HD feed.
Which then raises the question about what will happen when the analog feed is eventually shut down.
Scott Smith 03-23-06, 01:28 PM Knology has no plans of adding any more HD channels at this time. Not even ESPN2 HD.
Is this because they are out of bandwidth with the coax?
Broadband Internet, Analog and digital TV, and Phone service on one peice of copper. Is there room for any more?

When analog is shut down WCOV and the other local stations will be worth a lot more. I heard that Knology pays the Weather Channel $0.75/subscriber/month. If true, that's like $20K/month. Surely a broadcast station is worth at least that much, no? Last I heard, the Weather Channel doesn't carry NFL, Nascar, or American Idol.

If you'd like for me to help you get that corrected, call me at the station and we can go over it. It would help us to talk to someone who is having the problem, then I can work with Charter on the fix. 271-8888 / Mark.
If all goes as planned, we'll be showing the early round play of The Masters (Thu and Fri Apr 6 and 7) on the DT in glorious HD*....then of course Sat and Sun on
both services.

Do you think there is going to be a showdown between local stations and cable companies?
I can see the cable companies saying that they're not going to pay for the signal and see how much advertising the locals can sell without their carrying the signal.
On the other hand, I can see the locals saying no pay no signal. No more free ride.
Then the cable companies get the network feeds from another market.
Then locals scramble to try to undo the fix they've gotten themselves into.
Then the cable companies say, too late. Go start your own cable company.
This is what happens before I've had my morning coffee.......
No more free ride.
They have free-loaded for so long that I don't think they can think of any other way to operate.
Then the cable companies get the network feeds from another market.
I don't think so. Anyway, I like the ala carte business, which will probably never happen. It's too foreign a concept for America. My wife wouldn't like that, though. She flips through every movie channel available, including the on-demand ones. Thank goodness she hasn't figured out how to do the pay ones......yet.
W4IMM
Even with an ala carte system, charges could be structured where we'd be paying about the same. Wonder what percentage of total revenues for a cable company goes toward programming versus overhead and return on investment.
If you'd like for me to help you get that corrected, call me at the station and we can go over it. It would help us to talk to someone who is having the problem, then I can work with Charter on the fix. 271-8888 / Mark.
I'll have to give you a call sometime this week. It did happen again. I decided to DVR CBS Sunday Morning, it cut off after 48 minutes of the 90 minute program.
Anyone else getting dropouts on the NASCAR race on FOX. They only last about half of a second just like last weeks race. This is on Knology cable and OTA.
Yes, I do get those dropouts via the OTA signal, been having them all week long. The trees must still be budding. I got Charter, they don't have FOX-HD, so I can not confirm any cable dropouts.
It's unwatchable now.
Yes, now there is a lot more of these audio/video breakups. Almost unwatchable for me.
I also noticed this problem slighty while watching recorded Prison Break on Monday. I wonder if this has anything to do with WCOV adding the weather channel on 20-2. Breakups seem to have settled down some as I post.
WCOV-DT 03-27-06, 12:20 AM Thanks for this information, Shon, BLP, and others. If the breakup problem were to happen more frequently, it would be a lot easier to determine where it is originating. Coming and going makes it easy to blame the leafing-out of trees. Let's hope it gets much worse. Then I can find out if it's on our end and what's causing it. The weather wasn't on for last week's race so it's doubtful that that contributed to any breakups then. However, there could be some bandwidth issues involved this weekend. The parts of last week's race that I saw were OK. Saw none of this weeks. Don't be shy about complaining. Thanks, Phil
Scott Smith 03-27-06, 03:31 AM Maybe this had something to do with it. :D

With regard to carriage over Brighthouse or Charter I can only tell you that there are still some issues to be resolved, the primary one being compensation. Therefore I don't have any dates. Similarly, I can't tell you when WCOV-DT will change transmitter locations and go to high power. It's in the works but no date set yet. I don't have a lot of answers, but I do have empathy.........even sympathy.

The digital is at the studio location, in the Normandale section of town. Plans are to ultimately transmit digital from the present analog location, which is WSFA's tower in Grady.

Ah, the wonderful days of rooftop antennas. For some reason I'm having a bit of trouble with WAKA tonight, even after employing the armstrong rotator. Guess it's all the leaves and buds!
Watched all of 24 in HD without so much as a hickup here in Jasmine Hills using the OTA antenna.
Grandpa, might want to check two things. 1. trees leafing out and 2. too much power. What kind of antenna are you using?

Had no problems with signal for last two years..same trees. Have a DB4 multi-directional antenna. All the other HD channels are coming in strong. Checked the antenna, did some playing around, nothing doing, am only getting between 30-35 signal strength. :(
Grandpa,
I'm north of Montgomery. Don't know if signals are the same in all directions. Maybe one of the tech guys can jump in. Can signal strength drop in only one direction?
Scott Smith 03-28-06, 10:57 AM I just checked mine. I'm within a few miles of grandpa.
30' directional antenna. less that 30% pointed directly at Fox.
WAKA is 78%
WNCF is 82%
Something is wrong. Last Thursday Fox was 78%

Scott..I think I found the problem. If I am not mistaken you have a VIP211 from DISH. I hooked my OTA Antenna to a spare HD receiver I have and it works fine. Also the HDMI connection does not work. Do you have an extra receiver so you can try?
Scott Smith 03-28-06, 11:30 PM Yes I do have the 211.
You remember this happened a while back with SFA and it suddenly came back?

How is it I get WCOV with another receiver? I plug into it with the same antenna and cable. I plug into the VIP211, but the 211 does not get signal.
Scott,
If you're wanting to rule out it being a receiver problem, I can bring mine over and we can see if you can pick up WCOV-DT. PM me if interested.
Scott Smith 04-01-06, 02:15 AM Jim,
I might take you up on that.
I have a HD tuner in my mitsu WD-52628 but have been 2 lazy to switch it over. :)
I got a Knology HD box today for kicks and giggles and I have to say it gives Dish a run for the money in picture quality.
The HD locals are flawless.
The wife works 7p to 7a and sleeps during the day so I have to tip toe around on the weekends. ;)
Oh BTW, I was at a knology customers home today programing a Harmony 880 Remote and they mentioned WCOV has be unwatchable lately. Even in analog!
Go figure
No real problems with todays NASCAR race on FOX via HD Knology cable. Picture even looks better than the last two weeks. Maybe it was a west coast thing.

Cable companies don't know a lot about OTA TV, actually. I was talking with one of the Knology techs last week. He confessed that they were using a single antenna for several stations.....stutter, gasp.

yea, pretty amazing isn't it.. I visited a headend where the tech was using a UHF
antenna to pickup one of our DT's..He thought that since is was 25-1 it was ok to use the same UHF antenna used for analog 25..except the digital is on Ch-8.

Please do tell.
I was told the locals have a fiber link to the head end.
larrylwill 04-03-06, 03:08 AM Does anybody know is CH-8 is OFF the air? I havent been able to get either the Analog or digital feeds at all today or tonight. Normally I get them in the 90's SS.

We had quite a bit of trouble yesterday. Everything's back now, but
know this: Fiber is fed for WAKA-SD on Knology, Charter, Echostar. Fiber is
fed for WAKA-DT on Charter.
Now, without going into details, we lost both DT transmitter and SD video-to-transmitter about 5pm Sunday. Fiber customers not affected. Took about an hour
to get the SD video feed back. Took until this afternoon to get the DT transmitter
back up.
Grandpa Train 04-03-06, 05:32 PM Thanks for the update. Sure glad your up in time for Final Four. Any chance your folks could add something on your web site that gives the status of the signal?

Clauses in their network contract. They are allowed a certain number of pre-emptions per year.

You've got to be kidding. Why can they just not leave well enough alone? They will probably try to make ammends by showing it later. Do you think it will be in HD though? Last I heard the stations couldn't record and playback in HD, although I can do it right here at the house.

I've heard of people recording TV at home but I can't figure out why. Is it for archival purposes? What do you archive on? Tape? DVD? Both? Arrays of drives? Is it for time shifting? What sort of programming is worth the trouble? I'm thinking maybe it's sports. If so, do you actually watch those things more than once? Just curious.

bdfox18doe
When you do that, the DVDs are SD, right?
bdfox18doe 04-05-06, 08:35 AM Can be either. HD DVD's can be played back by the server, or I can play the back by JVC HD DVD player, made by IO-Data..there is a big thread here elsewhere in the forum.

Bob,
If you go the route of burning the DVD with HD content, don't you run into problems getting all of a 2 hr movie onto one DVD?? What about sound? DD5.1 or 2channel?
ktFOX55/27 04-05-06, 01:25 PM I've been messing around with the IO-Data player too. How much you are going to fit on a DVD depends on the bit rate of the material. For example a 14mb/sec program takes up around 6 gig per hour. Both 5.1 and 2.0 audio wind up on the DVD.
The file also has to be split up to fit on the DVD. DVD is FAT32 which has a 4GB max file size.
I've heard of people recording TV at home but I can't figure out why.
I do it so I can fast forward through the commercials! It is a brilliant machine. Now, if they can only make one that will remove all station imposed graphics. ha ha

I've got to say our web site is not the easiest thing to add something to....
but that's a good idea. I'll get with IT. We had a GM one time that went around
asking why we couldn't put something on the channel to tell people when we'd
be back on the air.

ktFOX55/27 04-05-06, 05:09 PM Ken,
Do you have a link to a thread that goes into this in detail. I'm interested in seeing what's involved.
I won't delve into capturing video there's just too many ways too do it, I've tried several, all have their pros and cons. It really comes down to what hardware you already have and what you budget is to build on. The HTPC Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=26) is the best resource for that.
What really simplifies things is the IO-Data Player (http://www.iodata.com/usa/products/products.php?cat=HNP) . It not only plays regular movie DVD's but data DVD's as well. You don't have to know how or go through the pain creating movie format DVD's in order to burn your movies to DVD. The IO-Data player also plays most popular movie file formats so you have flexibility. It does have it's quirks, but is priced affordable, well affordable enough for me to live with the quirks until a better mousetrap comes along.
As for editing HD files, I use Video ReDo (http://www.videoredo.com) . It's easy to use, cheap and does a great job of editing out commercials and splitting files so I can store them on DVD.
For burning the files I suppose you could use any burning software, Roxio is my tool of choice. Others say Nero is the best but I find Roxio easier to use.
bdfox18doe 04-05-06, 06:21 PM In that telling it was an irate viewer who called and suggested it.
I worked with an engineer and GM pair many years ago..the transmitter went off the air..the GM immediately called the transmitter, asking.."Do you know we're off the air"?? The engineer replied "Yes". The GM then asked "Well, what are you doing about it?" The engineer replied "Well, right now..I'm standing here wasting time on the phone with you".. the next thing the engineer heard was "click" in the phone as the GM hung up.. :D
(and it wasn't Mark's boss either..) :)
bdfox18doe 04-05-06, 06:23 PM For you that don't know, Ken isn't a thread hijacker, he works with us..and a dang good engineer to boot despite that..!
Scott Smith 04-05-06, 06:36 PM The file also has to be split up to fit on the DVD. DVD is FAT32 which has a 4GB max file size.
8.5 on a dual layer. ;) ;)
ktFOX55/27 04-05-06, 07:34 PM 8.5 on a dual layer. ;) ;)
The 4GB file size isn't a limitation of the DVD's capacity, it's the file system used when burning a data DVD that has the limitation. However, you would be able to put 2, 4GB files on a dual layer disc :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAT32#FAT32
When creating a Video DVD a different file system is used and it has an even smaller 1GB file size restriction.
http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/DVD/File/File.html
There may be other file systems that can be used when creating a data dvd's, if so, I'd love to learn about it. However, when attaching an external USB hard drive to the IO-Data player you are restricted to FAT32 drives. I would assume any data DVD created with something other than FAT32 would not be read by the IO-Data player.
Grandpa Train 04-06-06, 05:19 PM The Masters looks great in HD. This is the first Golf I have seen in HD. It makes the Augusta course look spectacular.
Now, now. I think that falls into the category of urban legend! Your father probably told me that in the late '60s early '70s. In that telling it was an irate viewer who called and suggested it.
No...really. Dad may have said it, but this GM was the same one who called me
out of church one Sunday to switch the NFL game in progress. Seems someone
had called him at home and said we didn't have the "right" game on. I tried to explain
to him there is no "right" game for everyone, but he insisted we switch. When
I called the master control operator and told him, he just paused and said "are you drunk?" Well, we switched and got a nice barrage of calls and a write up in the paper the next day. Real stinky. After all that, that GM said "well, I still
think it was the right thing to do".
ktFOX55/27 04-07-06, 02:13 PM There may be other file systems that can be used when creating a data dvd's, if so, I'd love to learn about it.
I just tested burning using Nero software, it used UDF file system for data DVD which does allow files larger than 4 gig. Haven't found a way to do that with Roxio yet but I'm using a basic version that came with my drive which lacks all the features of the retail version. The IO-Data player was able to read the disk just fine.
Sorry for temporarily hi-jacking the thread, just want to make sure I wasn't spreading any misinformation :)

Zho40, Are the channels you want specific to D*? You may be disappointed with
D*s HD channels. They have been down rezzing the channels for a while to deal with limited bandwidth. From what I have read E* downrezzes the Voom channels but not the main HD channels. I have D* and the HD channels look okay but I can tell the diference between them and full bandwidth OTA channels. It looks like it may be a while, if ever, that D* gives us full bandwidth. Of course, if
D* is the only place you can get the channels you want you don't have much choice. Don't get me wrong, D's HD channels look good but they could look better.

No Montgomery Locals on Direct. SD or HD.
All future Direct HD installs require the AT9 antenna.
http://www.2000networks.com/accessories/dishes_lnbs/images/directv_kaku_5_lnb_dish.jpg
These installs require SCC (Solid Copper Core) RG6 with no diplexing as the bandwidth on the cable is used from 250 mhz to 2500 mhz.
Bottom line if you dont have a perfect view of the southern sky along with accesibuility to your existing cable it ain't gonna happen.
Plus you will need an OTA antenna for locals.
To get all I wanted I chose Knology and Dish. It's expensive but I wanted access to all HD programing avaible until it gets better.

I should have been more specific about the locals. I knew I would have to use OTA for locals I was just hoping someone out there was already using the DVR box to record locals OTA w/o any problems.
bdfox18doe 04-12-06, 07:15 PM Hope you will let us know the outcome.
Absolutely, and guaranteed. Glad to help. The folks at dish network are great people to work with. :)
I should have been more specific about the locals. I knew I would have to use OTA for locals I was just hoping someone out there was already using the DVR box to record locals OTA w/o any problems.
I'm using the DirectTV HD Tivo and have no problems with recording locals. The box blends the locals and sat channels seamlessly so you do not notice the switch from sat to locals, and as I said earlier, the quality of the HD locals is noticeably better than the quality of the D* HD channels (the D* HD channels do look good but they could look better--some complain about artifacts but I have very rarely noticed any artifacts--at times the picture is a little soft and with not quite all the detail that could be there). For a lot of discussion on this go to the prgramming forum and enter "HD lite" in the search feature. But as far as recording the locals there is no problem at all, the box treats the locals just like the sat channels as far as funtionallity. Of course, DirecTV now has their on proprietary DVR which can handle MPEG 4 which is what the HD locals are and will be transmitted with. (Since we are the 116th DMA it will probably be a while before the HD locals are available here from D*-and then down rezzed) Not sure if new subscribers can still get the HD Tivo or everyone gets the new box, but in any event there should be no problem with the locals. This is a long answer and probably more than you wanted to know. Stan

and asked why they had all the local networks except our Fox station (WCOV) which has been broadcasting in HD for a couple years. Knology and Charter both carry it, what's the problem?
I got a call from the Birmingham office. (I guess they answer the mail.) I was told that getting enough requests for the station could move things along faster.
I've been getting nothing but "still in negotiation" for a year, so at least this was a different answer.
Toys,
I wonder how many request it would take??
larrylwill 04-19-06, 09:41 PM I just got a great Idea just after Ch 8 interrupted Criminal Minds with STORM WARNING!!!!! on the HD feed, Ch 12 is showing the MAP and interrupting, at least CH 8 isn't showing the MAP
Why don't Ch 8 and Ch 12 move the programming to the weather channel 8.3, 12.3 and move the weather broadcast to the regular channel 8.1, 12.1, then everybody will be happy. Whats the point of the weather channel anyway when they keep shoving our nose in the weather on the other channels. If one can get the digital feeds then they also get the weather channel.
WATCH out a storm may be coming.!!
You know this is freakin' ridiculous. WSFA has ruined everything that is good about high-definition. The stupid weather map is on the hd feed. Now, there is absolutley no reason to watch NBC if there is the slightest possiblity of a sprinkle falling in this state.

I'll bet it's closer than it was a year ago.
That would be awesome!
Well, one of two things are true. Either there was some validity to the "budding trees" theory or WCOV made some changes.
As some of us reported, the signal was dropping out. As I watch NASCAR tonight, there are no dropouts. The picture looks great! The signal meter still fluctuates a bit, but not enough to pixelate the picture.
I have the same receiver, antenna, and electrical wiring as I did previously. My setup has not changed. The only thing on my end that has changed is that the trees now have leaves on them as opposed to buds.
So, the tree budding theory is true, or something happened at the station. I don't know, but am very happy NASCAR looks great!
bdfox18doe 04-22-06, 09:02 PM WOOO Dale! Lookit that too-fore kar go!

WCOV-DT 04-22-06, 10:16 PM So, the tree budding theory is true, or something happened at the station. I don't know, but am very happy NASCAR looks great!
You stated those possibilities twice. I vote for the buds. Nothing happens at the station that would affect your reception. We're either transmitting or we're not. At this time, the system is too simple to offer varying degrees of output. The antenna seldom gets iced over and it can't flap around in the breeze.
I think that Nascar looked a little better before 20.2 came along and robbed some of the bandwidth. But maybe I'm just imagining things.

Dan,
I think that's probably too far to expect to use an indoor antenna and to receive those channels.
Dan,

I'll ditto that. It's just one of the "improvements" that digital brings to the OTA viewer. They no longer have the luxury of watching something that they really want to see and are willing to view a snowy picture to see it. Big Brother says, "no." The entire hobby of TV DXing will lose it's allure. Who's going to sit in front of a blank screen and wait for a signal to pop up? This is a sorry state of affairs.

I've used RoadRunner since Bright House first offered it. I've been very satisfied. I have some friends that moved here from Montgomery. They were with Knology there and said Road Runner is faster. I can't tell you how it
compares to BellSouth's DSL but I would expect RR to be faster.
Grandpa Train 05-07-06, 12:21 PM I have to stop and remember where I live. Since I like Poker, I thought I would turn to Channel 12 and watch National Heads-up Poker and see if it was in HD. But of course we can't watch the first hour here. But I sure could watch a Church service (I already went) and the weather map. I Hate WSFA.
larrylwill 05-07-06, 09:18 PM Hey Grandpa, I see Ch 12 WSFA has used there crawler so much they broke it, and now they have another way of pizzing us off, its a perminate part of their HD picture now, and only goes away with some commercials. It doesnt show on the SD or Analog feed either. Their engineers are too stupid to turn it off. The FCC should revolk their liscense. I bet they pay the weather man 3x as much as their high school engineer. Just like Win Dixie, Its getting better every day.

I hear the new ownership ran off the chief engineer. They have that job opening listed on their website. They're also looking for another meterologist, among other folks. Must be a high pressure place to work these days.
Grandpa Train 05-08-06, 06:41 AM Someone asked me to take a deep breath and ask my self WWJD? I know for a fact that he watches the NBC station in Bethlehem PA.

That damn channel 12. "The National Weather Service In Tallahassee, FL has

holding all us weather lovers on this board in suspense. Well, it is ratings period. Maybe they thought we'd tune in at 10 for the answer.

Oh Man, then we must chat.. WFXB's studio is located in the Wart Hog A10 training facility, where the flight simulators used to be. The unit insignia is still on the front door..sandblasted into the glass.. :)
You can fly into the FBO where private planes go, and walk 200' to the studio..

My wife and I were both in the Air Force. Owned a house across the highway from the beach. This was back in 1972. Sold the house when we left, should have kept it.
Scott Smith 05-10-06, 11:09 AM Scott,
any chance you can loan me a 211 to test?, I've been here before with that brand..
Bob,
I have a 622 on the way and when it gets here I will be able to get you the 211.
Just couldn't make myself loose my HD. :D
I really think it's trees in my case now because I can't get WAKA either and it's on the same line of site as WCOV.
On a diffrent subject,
Anyone using a Dish 1000 in Montgomery?
With 129 being so low and west I was wondering if anyone is getting decent signal.
bdfox18doe 05-10-06, 11:14 AM OK, I'll check here and get it back to you ASAP, and post results here.
Scott Smith 05-10-06, 06:14 PM Oh wonderful.
When the weather really does get severe enough for my Dish Network to not operate neither does the OTA.
Great job E* you will be hearing from me.

Shortly after I posted I noticed that most of my locals were back except for 26--it's still gone. WCOV is back but it is remapped for me to 20.1 (instead of 16.1).
(I was afraid I was going to have to watch "Lost" and "Invasion" in SD).

Yep noticed that today at a customers house.
Otherwise I wouldn't have known because I use a Harmony Remote with all my favorites programed in.
Now that the leaves have come on strong my signals are beginning to fluctuate.
My worse problems are with WSFA and WNCF. If I adjust the antenna to get the best signal for WSFA and WNCF I can't get a signal from WAKA. If Bright House
would go ahead and get WCOV I would switch back to cable. I've been tempted anyway due to D's treatment of their HD channels (E* is not that much of an option since I would still have to get my locals OTA). I wish they had ESPN2 HD
but that might not be a deal breaker. I already have cable for Road Runner and I have the basic cable package (of course I could rent Bright House's DVR and get the local HD channels--except for WCOV--but I don't want to pay for another DVR service just for my locals. I already have the HD Tivo. Of course, I had the same problem with the leaves last year--the simplest thing might be just to have the offending tree cut down but that still wouldn't help with my antenna direction for WAKA.
Does anyone know where WAIQ went?

I'm not sure if I am understanding that statement.
If that whole statement refers to E*
They have SD locals, and ESPN2 HD, as well as RaveHD, TNTHD, Universal HD, ESPNHD, HDNET, RUSH, World Sport, HDNET Movies, HBOHD, ShowtimeHD, Gameplay, DiscoveryHD, PPVHD, GalleryHD, UltraHD, TreasureHD, HDNEWS, and more.
Why don't you get E* with HD and put a rotor on your antenna?

I just meant that E* would not help with the reception problems due to leaves as I would still have to get my local HD channels via antenna. I am reluctant to switch to E* as I switched from E* to D* a couple of years ago when D* had more
HD than E*. Things have changed, but with my luck, shortly after I switched back E* would start downrezzing their HD channels (other than the VOOM channels which are already downrezzed). If cable had WCOV HD and ESPN2 HD they would be a very attractive option. (My antenna mast is right outside my patio door so adjusting it is not a big problem.)
I'm seeing both of them at 7:05PM.
I now see that they're back. They were down for a couple of days.
Picture doesn't look as good as it did a few days ago.
larrylwill 05-15-06, 09:05 PM I see that Ch 12 WSFA has found a new way to agravate us viewers. So far for the whole show of Deal or No Deal on the HD feed the picture is squesed up to fit Crime Stoppers Wanted posters. Oh joy.
Has anybody here been able to receive Channel 50 out of Birmingham?
bdfox18doe 05-21-06, 03:04 PM Hellloooo.. where is everybody? It's been awful quiet down there.. Makes me think that with all the bad weather, you must have been watching WAKA-DT rather than WSFA and thus have all been casualties of said bad weather..

Don't watch local Telly very much anymore...two many weather alerts and maps. Channel 12 just likes to put Church services on instead of poker and such. Will stop watching NASCAR when it moves to NBC also.
Too busy watching ESPN 1 & 2 HD, TNT-HD, HBO-HD,
STARZ-HD, & HDNET. Right now WSFA-DT is off the air due to the nice weather.
===All Info Tentative===
Tue June 6 is primary election day. We all know what that means:
Wall-to-wall election coverage on 8 and 12. Here at the BIG 8, coverage
is scheduled to begin at 7pm....but since we're the station with the happy difference, you can see CBS prime (and Late Night, if it becomes necessary) on the DT that night. Also, please enjoy Double Doppler 88,888 all night on DT-3. All without that election stuff.
On the analog, the real battle will be if we have severe weather. Since the
election coverage and the weather coverage would both be originating in the
same studio...and we all know how talent gets when upstaged.....hmmmm.
I wonder if news knows that the weather maps and crawler are inserted downstream from news graphics? Graphics Wreck!

Thanks for the Update..but who the heck will be watching..local TV..I can watch up to 20 Baseball games..can watch Hockey playoffs..not to mention DISCOVERY,TNT,HGTV,History etc..all without Maps
well....uhhhhh......yes. but how could you live without the maps? you need the maps. you want the maps. the maps are your friends. your companions. like a drug you wish you could shake yet it feels so good to watch the counties fill in
red...cause then you know what is about to happen: total interruption of your program and a man standing there telling you in very long detail what to do IF we have heavy rain....or worse yet: PEA-SIZED HAIL! don't you know you wouldn't know what to do............................................
well, don't you???????????
Does anybody know what local station if any will broadcast the new CW network this fall. UPN 67 is out of it due to them picking up a new network(forgot its name)?

Bunch of ingrates, I tell ya! just wait till they're all dead and cold, then we can say
"we told you so!!" ;) ..... But, honestly, finally someone who takes HD serious enough to die for! Well, other than us that is! :D
Honestly tho,I'm with ya GrandPa..IMHO, that silliness has a lot to do with the decline in viewership of the big 4 network stations.. :(
I've pretty much given up on WAKA and WSFA....especially WSFA since they now have the technology to insert the maps on the HD feed. I'm with Grandpa, I'll find other things to watch when they want to play the map/election/big as* law-call banner game. I refuse to watch all that redundant silliness.
I've been in contact with my "good" friends at Charter (sarcastic remark). I've been trying to get them to start broadcasting Howard TV. As soon as they do, that's all I'll be watching anyway! LOL
Grandpa Train 05-22-06, 07:16 PM Do you notice channel 12 is THE STORM TEAM and not the weather team. Every weather forecast starts with Thunder and lightening.

LOL! The management of that station would love nothing more than to broadcast 24 hours a day of nothing but gloom and doom!
These bright sunny days gotta be disapointing to them. Maybe they can invent a sunshine intensity map to broadcast on 25% of the viewable space on the screen.

Shon, Mark and I discussed this and took it to our Marketing Team. They loved the idea, and agreed that we often place too much emphasis on the negative. Our GM has asked the weather guy to develop an index for this, and the graphics folks are already working on the logo. We hope to have this on air at WAKA by the end of the week, it will be a good tryout for us with our new HD logo system!
Again, thanks, it goes to show that we need to listen to our viewers here on AVS.

I have a good idea. All the stations could agree to air NO LOGOS. Then they could get together and put on a relatively cheap LPTV channel, where all the logos could be combined in one massive full screen logo. The logos could constantly be interrupted by little county maps and crawls. Naw. Sounds too much like heaven.

Here I am watching 24 on WCOV.
Is that glow in the dark orange logo degrade the rest of the picture??
When the logo goes away during commercials, the picture looks cleaner.

The commercials are cleaner. Many Fox programs appear to suffer from theatrical lighting. Since the logo always appears in the same place, you could put a piece of black tape over it. I think somebody here already suggested that.
Scott Smith 05-22-06, 10:50 PM Anyone notice WSFA DT has been down since sometime Sunday?

This looks more like the graphics generator (or whatever is used to put the fox logo on the screen) is degrading the rest of the screen. When they go to commercial or for that matter Andy Griffin, neither sporting the logo, the picture looks clearer. I understand theatrical lighting and that's not what this is. It was odd that on 24 where they usually shoot the interior shots at CTU to show the tungsten lighting (orange), this time there were some scenes (Cloe telecon with Jack) where the colors were neutral and then the shots of President Logan's speach outdoors appeared orangey(as the earlier CTU scenes normally appear). If these colors were to styalize the scenes, it looks like they'd be consistant.
Anyone notice WSFA DT has been down since sometime Sunday?
I may be down that way tomorrow. If so 'll look in on them and see whazzup.

Great news Bob! We have 27 people who have been working all night on this and
feel it will be on the air by prime time tonight!!! Coppertone has bought it and their logo will be up front. As an added bonus, we have sold
the audio portion of it. To start off with, we'll have the sound of a baby crying, indicating hunger, indicating food, indicating time to buy food, indicating where to go to buy food. Publix, Winn Dixie and Brunos will be alternating their logos over this sound....which shouldn't be too loud to hear most normal and louder parts of a typical show. Don't worry......we positioned all this so the weather maps and crawl can still be up in full size.
This good weather was really depressing the weather folks, so thanks for the great idea!
And down here, we can use it year round!
Hi,
I'm in Auburn and I got a DTV tuner in July 2003, and have since followed the emergence of Montgomery and Columbus DTV stations. With my rooftop yagi antenna pointed southwest somewhere between Grady and Montgomery, I now quite reliably receive WAKA, WSFA (except the last few days), WAIQ and WNCF. I also receive WGIQ Louisville depending on weather conditions. Occasionally, over the last few days, I've been receiving DTV test signals from WBIH Selma.
Before my antenna rotator went south in October 2004, I was able to receive WCOV, and the Columbus DTV stations WRBL and WTVM. Two other Columbus stations were also received occasionally, but these had weak DTV signals. I could also receive WGIQ perfectly by rotating the antenna due south.
I'm a PBS buff, thus I mostly watch WAIQ-DT-1. I watch the evening news on one of the other Montgomery DTV stations, and occasionally, catch some sports in HD on these stations as well. I am quite satisfied with the available variety and quality of the DTV I receive from Montgomery. In fact, I am not concerned with receiving Columbus stations presently, but when the public TV station in Warm Springs, GA goes digital later this year, I'll fix my rotator and will also be able to receive the other Columbus stations.
Question 1: What is the deal with WCOV? Isn't it on the same tower with WSFA? I can receive the analog CH-20 very well, but very rarely have I been able to get the digital signal after my antenna freeze. Previously, I could receive WCOV-DT quite well when the antenna was tweaked towards Grady.
Question 2: The time info sent out by WAIQ seems to be about 3.5 minutes late. I notice this because the receiver I use for recording, an old RCA DTC-100, automatically resyncs its clock each time with the station it receives. This is not really a problem, except I can't set up to record directly from the Program Guide. Instead, I must adjust the recording start time four minutes earlier. Has anyone else noticed this clock error?
TH
Scott Smith 05-23-06, 02:31 PM Ya know you brought up an interesting point that I have noticed but never have spoken of.
I'm on the East Side of Montgomery inside the bypass. (Waresferry road actually)
I struggle for what ever reason the get OTA with a Rotor, and an antenna on a 27' pole.
I get WSFA fine (When it's up) but I have to point directly at it. AKA, COV, and NCF I was getting in the winter but now I can't pick up COV at all.
However,
Once you get out of metro Montgomery it gets much easier to pick up OTA.
Like your example I have a customer in Mathews Alabama which is as far east as you can go in Montgomery county without being in Macon County and picks up everything but COV on Rabbit ears!!
Oh and to answer your Question about COV they are on low power for DT and are supposed to be negotiating with SFA to put a transmitter on their tower.
WSFA HD is down on Knology also.
So WSFA-DT OTA and Knology (same thing :D ) are both down.
Their transmitter is dead-in-the-water. Probably waiting for parts or service, or both.
Oh and to answer your Question about COV they are on low power for DT and are supposed to be negotiating with SFA to put a transmitter on their tower.
The low power part is correct. Otherwise, WCOV is exploring a different scenario, which I can't reveal or I would have to kill myself. The present transmitter coordinates are 32-20-06, 86-17-16, which is in the south part of the city of Montgomery, not Grady.
Watching American Idol on Fox and it looks great. 5 Stars on picture and sound quality.
That orange logo from last night is gone and we've got a translucent grey down deep in the corner.
Thanks Fox !!!
Agreed. It does look great!
I'm still using the indoor TERK antenna, the trees are in full bloom and all is well! LOL
Oh, by the way, I switched over to WAKA and see no "sunshine intensity" map. What up guys? I'm waiting...........
:-)
Well that didn't last long. Back to the orange logo up in the picture.
