View Full Version : Lansing, MI - HDTV
FTLOSM, I know what you mean. Being a current, long term customer of D helped me. They gave we $250 credit, plus 6 mo of Showtime and dropped my HBO to $2 for 6 months to "keep" me. I had a defective DTiVo that was still under the service contract I bought 3 years ago so CC credited me $100 toward a replacement, in this case an HdTiVo. So my net cost was about $600. I've got a bunch of E* stuff I need to dump on Ebay, should wipe out the $600, just got to get myself to list it.
All in all I'm happy with my setup, OTA and D give me all I could want, and the HD TIVo is a champ. I bought a second drive to drop into it, but so far I haven't filled the first up yet, I guess I don't save as much stuff as others. One slight drawback to the Hd TiVo is it only lets you select 2 markets, So I choose Lansing and Detroit. It lists all the Flint channels but only displays "Regular Programming", which I guess is fine since I never watch Flint stations.

From Mason, we drive down to Jackson. In the seedy mall off the highway, there's a koney island called Alpha's that has great turning spit gyros and great Greek salad with homemade dressing. It's a drive, and a dive! If you're heading towards Detroit, try National Coney Island or Kerby's Coney Island.
And to stay on topic... I never had luck when I dealth with CSRs in Lansing for cable. It was always best to go into the office on Miller Rd. Even if I had to wait in line, I usually got what I wanted.
Charles Moore 12-13-04, 11:24 PM Been reading thru this thread trying to find some answers. Went to antennaweb.org and found a few things about my distance and direction to DTV stations in my area. I'm interested in buying a laptop (probably HP ZD8000 with about 1700x1200 resolution ) and using the SASEM usb HDTV tuner.
I am only interested in receiving HDTV channels. The best I can figure here are some stations that are digital but I'm not sure if they are broadcasting HDTV.
Here are the results from the antennaweb.org website for my location about 5 miles west of STOCKBRIDGE.
Miles from station are in parentheses preceded by direction to station.
WSYM-DT 47.1 FOX LANSING MI 278° (19.1) 38
WLNS-DT 6.1 CBS LANSING MI 348° (16.9) 59
WPXD-DT 33 PAX ANN ARBOR MI Awaiting FCC Permit 123° (12.0) 33
WKAR-DT 23.1 PBS EAST LANSING MI 344° (18.4) 55
WHTV-DT 34 UPN JACKSON MI Currently Not Available 265° (12.7) 34
WILX-DT 10.1 NBC ONONDAGA MI 273° (15.0) 57
WLAJ-DT 53.1 ABC LANSING MI 265° (12.7) 51
Keep in mind I am a newbie with most of this stuff
Questions:
1. Do you think the SASEM unit will work in my location.
2. Will I need a pre-amp? Will a pre-amp work with this unit?
3. Which stations should I be able to pull in ?
4. Which of these stations are broadcasting HDTV
5. Should I get a directional antenna?
6. I might decide to get a direct view (CRT?) HDTV with built in tuner.
Would that give me better reception than the laptop with SASEM?
HiggySlapBass 12-14-04, 12:47 AM I'm not from Lansing, but I'll try to help you anyway.
1. AFAIK, the SASEM comes with a Silver Sensor clone. I'm guessing that you'll need a different antenna for reliable reception for some of the channels. The only way you can really tell is by testing it out.
2. Unless you run 50+ feet of coax from your antenna, you will not need a preamp. In fact, a preamp could make the signals worse.
3. I'd say you should be able to pull in WSYM, WLNS, WKAR, and WLAJ. WILX is a crap shoot because of their limited signal.
4. WSYM, WLNS, WKAR, WILX, and WLAJ broadcast HDTV.
5. All antennas are "directional". Are you looking to use a rotor? If not, a Channel Master 4228 or an AntennasDirect DB8 should be reliable enough without having to rotate it. If you do go with a rotor, the CM 4221 or the AD DB4 could do the trick. Also, mount the antenna outside and as far up as you can. Probe for the best location if possible. Attic installations will reduce the antenna's strength by 40-50%.
6. It all depends on how well the TV tuner in the CRT works. Doing a model number search on this site and see if anyone else has used the same model for reception.
Charles Moore 12-14-04, 03:25 AM Thanks for the info. I just found "The Official AVS List of all DTV stations broadcasting HDTV" .
However I don't see the Lansing stations WSYM, WKAR or WLAJ listed as HDTV.
Am I missing something?
I looked up the channel master 4228 and it just might do the trick. It says it has a 60 mile range. I live about 50 miles from Flint and exactly 60 miles from Detroit. What are the chances of actually getting Flint and Detroit HDTV stations out here with that antenna?
Chris White 12-14-04, 10:30 AM 1. Do you think the SASEM unit will work in my location.
Sorry, I'm not familiar with SASEM.
2. Will I need a pre-amp? Will a pre-amp work with this unit?
Whether or not you need a pre-amp depends on your average distance to stations, the antenna you're using, and the length of coax from antenna to television. My guess, however, is that you wouldn't need a pre-amp for the Lansing stations, but you probably would for Detroit or Flint.
3. Which stations should I be able to pull in ?
Stations located 30 miles or less are pretty easy to get. Beyond that, it all depends on many factors -- such as, antenna height, receiver sensitivity, etc.
4. Which of these stations are broadcasting HDTV
I know you'll get HDTV from WLNS, WLIX, WLAJ, and WKAR. I don't know about other stations because those four are all I get.
5. Should I get a directional antenna?
Probably. It depends on antenna height and what stations you want to get.
'
6. I might decide to get a direct view (CRT?) HDTV with built in tuner.
Would that give me better reception than the laptop with SASEM?
Since I'm not familiar with SASEM, I couldn't say. What I will say is that you shouldn't buy any tv with a built-in tuner. Digital receivers are improving substantially every year and you want an easy upgrade path which you won't have with a built-in tuner.
I don't see the Lansing stations WSYM, WKAR or WLAJ listed as HDTV.
They are all capable of and are broadcasting HDTV - just not all the time. Stations won't be listed as HDTV. What you want to look for is whether or not they broadcast a digital signal.
What are the chances of actually getting Flint and Detroit HDTV stations out here with that antenna?
A distance of 50 miles + is really pushing the limits. To get that kind of range you need to be strong in all the key factors (antenna sensitivity, antenna height, pre-amp, receiver sensitivity, clear line-of-sight, etc.). A more reasonable goal might be to get a solid signal on all the Lansing stations. That would give you access to 95% of the non-sat hi-def content.
Quick question, anyone here in our Lansing area using VOOM ?
I have an install date of Dec 22nd, had it with comcast and don't wanna go back to directv, so I am gonna give Voom a try, what I am more curious of is their install ota hd antenna, is it going to be strong enough in our area to pull in the basic ota hd stuff?
Thanks for any replies or suggestions about voom or their ota antenna.
At this point anything is better than comcast (long story, tired of their line problems, jerky pic, pixels, 3rd attempt at fixing today, was worst attempt of all), just want them to remove the box and gonna try voom for a 6 month trial period...

That list isn't updated. I have received high definition programming from WSYM, WKAR and WLAJ.
I live about 60 miles from Lansing and I can pull in WLNS and WKAR full time, WSYM about 75% of the time (almost always at night) and WLAJ about 65% of the time (once again, better at night). I have had no luck with Detroit stations. You should be able to pick up some Flint and Detroit stations from your location with a 4228, a good preamp (I use a Winegard 4800P and it's excellent) and a rotor.

Just a hunch, but I would speculate he is unhappy that they have no plans to ever upgrade to HD in the case of CBS, and will not upgrade to digital until they are absolutely forced to in the case of FOX. So for the Flint/Saginaw market, there is absolutely no HD football on Sunday, let alone the rest of their HD programming. Their disaster attitude made me invest in a larger antenna and equipment to pull in Lansing.

That is correct and exactly what I did. I just wish I'd have more luck pulling in WSYM during the day. I do see at the FCC web site that they have a construction permit for a higher power level. Odds are that WSYM would have their signal upgrade completed before WSMH even goes digital.

Well I have the appointment for Voom on Dec 22nd, good or bad (as long as they show up) I am gonna give it a try, was hoping for a bit of input here of anyone who had tried it locally but I am willing to be the guniea pig for at least the 6 month trial.....
Wish me luck,,, anything has to be better than my comcast 6208 recently, had them out 3x so far, its jerkin pixelin, etc, they say line and box are OK, um ok then take it back is what I will most likely say after the 22nd if the voom installer shows up and the thing works like I am hoping...
So if anyone here wants to see voom (sears in lansing still doesn't have it hooked up after almost a year) lmk and as long as its installed and working your welcome to come see it...

sawmill 12-20-04, 08:45 AM Live southwest Lansing. Have had Voom since last spring. Gave up on Comcast several years back, then got Directv and then gave up on them because they were so slow in adding high definition channels. Other than news channels, I only watch high definition. When they first installed Voom, I noticed their receiver was quite finicky. In the meantime they have updated several times their software, so do not seem to have these problems any longer. I am satisfied with their service, and if making selection today, would choose Voom over the others. I self installed the ota antenna before Voom was installed, however it is my understanding that if you cannot receive local channels with their installed antenna, that they will come back and upgrade the antenna. Lansing is quite lucky in that most high definition ota programming is available via local stations, so Voom's antenna probably will suffice.
Does this mean that there will be a total of two people in Lansing area that can receive Voom?

I was out of town most of the day yesterday and Saturday. However, it worked fine when I came home Sunday night and I think everything I recorded worked as well, but most of it was recorded Saturday night.
AJerome 12-21-04, 10:00 AM After 3 attempts to report the problems I experienced over the weekend (CSR's at the 800 # insisted the problem was mine and mine alone), I went to the Miller Road office on Monday morning. They confirmed there was an issue with HD programming over the weekend and that it had just then been resolved.
Does anyone have a local number for Comcast? Trying to resolve local service issues with a call center so far away is such a waste of time!
Workindood 12-22-04, 05:17 PM I just noticed on TVGuide listing that channel 109 is HDPPV. I don;t get it on my Comcast cable. Does anyone else get it on channel 109?

I live near the Airport. Seems we are last to get anything here. I waited so long for broadband that it hurt. But then again I probably not use a PPV channel even one in HD. Friggin Comcast cost enough per month.
I just wish they would hurry up these "Negotiations" they keep telling me about getting CBS,FOX, and ABC in HD.

I know what you mean. I gave up and I'm getting a reciever for Christmas so I can get them OTA. So they'll probably add CBS, FOX and ABC in HD a week or two after I get it.
Workindood 12-23-04, 01:07 PM Thats is good for you. I tip my hat to you. I just have to STOP spending more BUCKS. The Buck has to stop somewhere, because I have no more BUCKS to spend. :) I will wait. I figure I have plenty of stuff to view on my set up now. My wife would shoot me if I spent more on the TV right now. I told her in March I am having the TV calibrated by Greg Loewen for my birthday. (She has NO idea who he is or care). That will cost me a few BUCKS too. I am very curious though on how good the set will look after he does his magic. I was thinking of setting up my camcorder while he works. I hope he doesn't mind me doing that.

I was gonna aim it at the screen to see what commands he does. And ask questions while he works so the answers are recorded. My DVD camcorder is not known for it's low light recording though. It is one of its weaknesses.
I have officially been VOOMED!
I got my voom box install on Dec 22 and I have had a few minor issues (mostly due to the tech they subcontracted for the install) he didn't set everything up in the install menus, so I had to call voom and walk thru a few of those things and he left a big mess in my yard outside (boxes and plastic wrap)....
BUT I was chiming in to say these last few days of tv viewing have been the most awesome experience with this 3 year old 65 inch hidef tv that I have owned yet!
I have had directv, I have had comcast hd, altho voom doesn't have a pvr yet, I still am enjoying the heck out of all the hd channels here!
They also installed a wineguard ota hd antenna and I now get all my locals here with signal strengths of 97 or better, really can't complain except I want a voom pvr...
But anyways just thought I would pass the word on to anyone considering voom that beyond the install bumps the actual service is pretty sweet and the picture is VERY good (blows comcast away for me on standard channels) and the hd picture is as good if not better than INHD or HDNET were for me with comcast and directv...
I am in East Lansing btw, so YMMV in terms of the ota antenna but I was shocked to see how well it works and how much it picked up signal strength wise ontop of all the hd voom offers I am now in HD Nirvana!!!!
Comcast gets called monday, drop me down to basic service (for the other tvs in the house and for my old tivo series 1 unit), cost wise its about the same too considering voom was a promo install for a buck and will run me about the same as the digital with the pvr did thru comcast...
Not saying voom is the best but for me having had directv and comcast ill be staying with voom for a while unless they seriously change something bigtime in terms of service or price...
Bill :)
also if any of you (off topic) are interested, i did a side by side listening test of bose wave radio vs cambridge soundworks 740 radio here at the house over the holidays, very interesting results if you ever wondered check it out, www.radiowars.homestead.com
Workindood 12-26-04, 11:27 AM Bill,
What does it cost for install? (can we post that here?..if not PM me) Cost for the install, equipment, etc. Are the OTA antennas your's now or Vooms?
I have a friend that lives on Park Lake and the cable system there is worst than Comcast. They do not offer any HD programing. I have been trying to get him to look at Voom.
I can not use Voom myself, unless they want to install a hundred foot pole/tower to get over the tress. :(
Right now its a promo thing $1 covered the install and ota antenna,
www.voom.com
I am 99% sure the ota antenna is theirs (if you cancel service you turn in) as is the hd box too, I got the va va voom (everything but playboy) and it plus the box rental comes out to about $95 per month, altho I dont have a pvr box anymore i DO have about 30 extra hd channels to flip thru , its exciting to actually USE this hd tv now after 3 years!!!
Actually that $95 is pretty close to what I paid for digital cable, their pvr box and their hbo package! Now I get tons of hbo, showtime, cinemax, tmc, starz, encore and many many many other hd channels plus all my locals thru that ota hd antenna they put up.
I was up pretty late last night just watching movies in hd...
I sure can't complain about the service or price, mainly just a bad installer (that could happen with dtv or dish or voom) cuz they are all subcontracted, if I had dtv installed that same guy same company would have been my installer, he just left a mess and didnt spend time to fine tune the dish aiming etc, (it was VERY cold that day) but geez pick up the plastic and boxes all over my yard.... Voom tho has been awesome on the phone about customer service, and is sending someone (hopefully a different tech) out on Tuesday to re aim the dish for me for a higher signal...
Bill :)
garybliev 12-29-04, 11:03 AM Enjoy Voom while you can. With only 26,000 subscribers it is knocking on death's door.
Excerpt From:
http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~33~2621316,00.html
The Long Island, N.Y.-based company is exploring alternatives for Voom. The high-definition satellite service was launched 14 months ago.Despite offering 39 high-definition channels, VOOM has struggled to gain market share and has only 26,000 subscribers.
Analysts have tagged Douglas County-based EchoStar as a possible buyer of Voom.
An EchoStar spokesman declined to comment. Through its Dish Network, EchoStar offers subscribers nine channels of high-definition television
Thats too bad really cuz being customer 26,001 and having had both Directv and Comcast (with hd and pvr) I can EASILY say VOOM blows them both away (for me at least)...
Will enjoy it as long as I can I guess...
In the last week I have watched more HD programming than in the last 2 months of comcast hd.. & when I had directv, yeah they had the hd stuff and I paid for it all got it all and such, but still at that time only had a handful of choices at any time and I had to put up my own ota antenna.
With voom I go thru 30+ hd channels and movies at anytime of the day, plus with them putting up my OTA antenna I now get much better reception for locals in hd (than I got with rabbit ears indoors) and it all goes thru one box (comcast box didnt accept local antenna input).
To be fair, my $1000 mitsu hddirectv box does accept ota antenna input, but I had stopped using directv, so I was having to have both the comcast box and the directv box there on all the time (just for local ota hd) thru directv box and cable hd thru comcast box.
Became a hassle with only one hd input on my tv too (swapping cables often to switch from comcast to directv ota input).
Life is much simpler now (one box, ota hd and sat hd all in one and TONS of hd to watch anytime of the day) I will stick with voom till they close the doors...
Bill :)
Does anyone recall why WLNS can't transmit the football delayed CBS Sunday programming in HD? I flipped over to WWJ and all of CBS's Sunday delayed movies are in HD, so it is available.
HiggySlapBass 12-31-04, 01:39 AM I'm guessing that WWJ has the ability to record and playback HD material and WLNS does not.
I would think that, but why wouldn't CBS send out an HD feed?
William M. 01-02-05, 07:04 PM Is anyone out there having problems locking onto WLAJ's OTA HD signal?
I get a signal strength of 85% to 92% but I can't lock onto it.

WLAJ HD is now coming in just fine.
I just turned on the receiver and there it was.
Good times!

I had the same problems too during the last NFL telecast. The picture was flickering constantly even though the signal strength was at around 80%
Checked the picture now and it seems to be just fine.
Hope the problem does'nt happen again this weekend during the games.

mikewins 01-05-05, 09:42 PM Hello Everyone
I am the Chief Engineer at WLAJ-TV. We have been having problems with our equipment that mutiplexes our HD, SD and PSIP material together. I am sorry for the difficulties you have had receiving WLAJ.
It started with brown outs and power outages on 11/28 that damaged some of our eqipment. We made some software changes to this equipment and that created more problems.
Today with the help of the equipment manufacture we reconfigured the equipment and I think it is fixed.
If you are still receiving a good signal strength but still having a problem please reply with details of your equipment. During the problems we discovered that the Dish Network HD receiver model 811 would go in and out of lock every 5 secs. or so. We recieved the most calls about this receiver.

I have a question though. Whenever I ask Comcast WHEN we are getting local HD from them they state they are in NEGOTIATIONS with local affiliates. ANY news on that from your end? We know it boils down to the bottom line. Are we close to getting local coverage in HD with your station?
Any "insiders info" on this subject that you are allowed to tell us? I do not have a HD OTA tuner, nor am I gonna buy one. I just can't afford anymore equipment and plan to stay married at the same time :D
And again...thanks for the time posting here.

I had some questions about Voom. I recently moved to Portland and was thinking of getting Voom, currently have Millennium cable.
With the OTA antenna can you pick up Digital and Analog stations? I currently do not have an antenna and was interested in receiving analog UPN (since in digital broadcast) just to watch some of the MSU basketball games.
Do you know which direction the Voom dish points?
Thanks

Go to http://www.antennaweb.org then type in your zip code, they will give you a pretty good representation of what stations you should expect to be able to receive with different sizes of antennas.
UPN from WHTV may be marginal in Portland, they are relatively low power from Leslie, transmitting with a directional antenna toward Jackson. They do not currently have a DT signal.
UPN in Grand Rapids is on WXSP, they are available as standard definition digital 8-2 on WOOD's digital service.
I don't know if WXSP carries any MSU basketball games. Those would be syndicated rather than a UPN network offer.
smithb39 01-07-05, 04:09 PM Thanks, I didn't know digital 8-2 was SD UPN WXSP that might work.
masterdeals 01-07-05, 05:59 PM Most of the ESPN + games (MSU and UofM) are broadcast on WFUM (analog 28 digital 52) out of Flint. It is the UofM PBS station. I am not sure how far west you can get it, but I pick it up easily.
WLNS in Lansing also airs the ESPN+ games, but usually only on weekends, not during primetime.

I'm curious as to why isn't todays 4pm NFL game (being shown on WLAJ) in HD? I get a weak signal from WJRT in Flint, but I get a few minutes here and there and it's clearly being broadcast in HD. I was just wondering why stations don't broadcast in HD when shows are scheduled to be shown in HD (I know WLAJ isn't the only station that does this).
Watching an SD show that you should get in HD is pretty frustrating. In fact I went and turned it off. Hopefully the local CBS and FOX stations broadcast their games in HD tommorow.
noffsin6 01-08-05, 06:10 PM That's funny, I just noticed the Rams - Seahawks game came on in HD when I checked it at 6pm. It wasn't about ten minutes ago when I made my first post. I'm still curious as to why it wasn't in HD for the first two hours.
It looks to me like the stations have to switch their feed from SD to HD manually and the people who do it are easily distracted.:) I could be completely wrong though, it could just be buggy computers (you would think this type of thing would be computerized by now), due to costs, or any number of reasons. Anyone have any insight into how local stations work?
VIVOtheFURY 01-08-05, 06:12 PM It wasn't in HD just before six when I checked.. perhaps WLAJ's "mikewins" was lurking on the forum. :)
William M. 01-08-05, 07:46 PM Frustrating indeed.
WLAJ DT is "flickering" again tonight and I am unable to lock onto the signal.
I am not trying to flame anyone but, I am glad Sunday's games are not on WLAJ.
Chris White 01-16-05, 02:14 AM If you are still receiving a good signal strength but still having a problem please reply with details of your equipment.
I'm receiving a strong signal (93-100%), but I am not getting an image from either the HD or the SD broadcast with my My-HD 120 card.
Chris White 01-16-05, 02:38 AM Is there any interest in a get-together of Lansing-area home theater enthusiasts? I would be willing to host the event at my home. One possibility is a March meeting timed to coincide with Gregg Loewen's visit to the area.
Workindood 01-16-05, 10:21 AM Hmmm...I would be interested. That is very gracious of you Chris. It would be beneficial to all. It would also be allot of fun to meet others in the Lansing area. You know they did NOT rate Lansing as the most friendly city. So this is our chance! ;) PM me on what you would need for me to bring. I NEVER come to someone's house empty handed. That would NOT be friendly.
If you do not mind I would like to bring a friend of mine that is not a member here(he Lurks though). He is a computer security specialist for a local company and owns a projector all hooked up through his network at home. He is Friendly and can try to answer any network questions people might have.
Like I said, this is very gracious of you to offer your home. Thank You.
Stephen Ring
PS: Do PM me though on what you would like for me to bring.
I myself have hosted one and been to over 3 other Home Theater G2G's in the Chicago area before I moved to East Lansing recently, they were alot of fun!
Everyone brought some sort of snack or food dish or pop or beer etc, and usually there was a theme of the event or folks would bring their top 2 reference dvds or superbits or something like that they wanted to show...
Even went to one where they did side by side (swap outs) of different projectors and speakers, that was fun...
Being new to the Lansing area here if we ever did start up a group of home theater fanatics I would certainly join! I could host one but this new place is pretty small compaired to my old theater room, now its a converted livingroom/theater room vs dedicated theater, but would be fun to meet up with others and talk shop so to speak...
The one G2G I liked most was the side by side one which I remember a guy hosting up near libertyville about 2 years ago, there were different speakers, lcd projectors, various reference material on dvd, and it was a blast all day long... I like those side by side comparison type IN HOME tests... obviously you may already know this about me from my www.radiowars.homestead.com page...hehe
Bill :)
Also I found that the EVITE service (free btw) is a very handy way to invite, track, inform and even give directions to a local event such as this G2G...
www.evite.com
Very handy little service! I recall the last G2G of home theater stuff in Chicago area the host used this and it made it very cool to check in see whos coming, read their comments or replies, read the hosts comments and replies and so on...
I found myself checking in every other day to see who replied, who was bringing what equipment dvds or food and what the host had to say about the event or times and directions to their place.
It worked so well I told my wife about it, she used it with a list of her clients that were interested in her next open house (she sells homes) and it worked out great, biggest turnout ever and was super simple, the folks who did come to the openhouse said they really liked the idea of the email evite service,,, will be using it again come spring when new model homes come in for sure...
Just a thought,
Bill :)

I am not trying to flame anyone but, I am glad Sunday's games are not on WLAJ. The only show I watch on ABC (and really the first time I've tried to get WLAJ-DT since they went live) these days is Alias, and I could not get a stable signal for the life of me. During the premier on the 5th, I ended up turning east to get WJRT, and last week I ended up watching it on cable (shudder...) My system specs are in POST #1 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=1942764#post1942764) of this thread. I guess part of the problem could be the neighbors house blocking the signal, or the fact that the tower is 22 miles away.
The thing that bugs me is that WSYM-DT and WILX-DT are in the same relative direction as WLAJ, and I get them just fine, and I get a better lock on WJRT out of Flint (42 miles) than WLAJ. This is very frustrating as WLAJ was the longest holdout in Lansing DT.
I'd be interested in attending a get-together. I know my setup isn't optimal, and I'd love to see/hear what others are doing.

I had no problems viewing the priemier of Alias HD from WLAJ. I'm 26 miles away. Radioshack medium directional antenna into a Samsung receiver/tv.
Also, WHTV is nowthe longest holdout....they're still not there.
TTRider 01-22-05, 01:48 PM Does anyone know if the Lansing area Comcast InHD and InHD2 channels are sent out encrypted?
I’m getting ready to buy a MyHD HDTV card for my PC and wonder if I should buy the current 120 model without a QAM tuner or wait for the recently-announced 130 model that includes a QAM tuner (for unencrypted) cable channels.
VIVOtheFURY 01-22-05, 01:59 PM Yes.. They are encrypted. Can't stream them on firewire, or pick them up with the HD QAM cable tuner in my Zenith.
TTRider 01-22-05, 02:29 PM That's disappointing and not the answer I hoped for.
It's interesting that in many other parts of the country they apparently aren't encrypted.

I've been a little out of the loop lately, but I'm looking into buying a QAM capable tuner (an LG LST-4200A.) I just have the standard non-digital cable from Comcast. Would I be able to get any HD from my cable signal this way? What if I upgraded to the cheapest Digital that they offer?
TTRider 01-22-05, 04:17 PM When I called Comcast to pick up HDTV, I was told you must subscribe to digital basic (at a minimum) to get the HD package.
Workindood 01-22-05, 07:00 PM Count yourself lucky I guess TTRider. You would think they would make you get their Platinum Package. For $5.00 extra a month, I guess it is not that bad. (For the HD cost) I find myself watching allot of PBS-HD. I am a little burned out on INHD. They just repeat everything and play crummy movies. Like "Johnny Dangerously"?? Are you kidding me? I do like their "America" series though.
So did everyone enjoy the SNOW day today? My GAWD...I shoveled 4 times today...and I could do it again because of the drifts. My neighbor did come over with his pick-up and blade and gave me a good cleaning out...of course it was after I did the original 6-8 inches with a "idiot stick". Snowblowers are one of the things I gave up on buying in place of HDTV equipment. ;) Something has to give.
Workindood 01-22-05, 07:18 PM Since I have put down a deposit on having the Jedi Master Greg coming to my home and calibrating my set-up, anyone else in the Lansing area doing the same this coming March?
And to Gandalf...er...Chris White. Is Greg coming to your house for this "Get Together" you are planning? I know Greg is on a time limit. It would be neat if he could come over and the timing was right. The guy has to spend the night at a motel/hotel I would suppose.
I am really kinda pumped to learn about this calibrating from the service menu. This is something I will not try on my own. I have messed up way to many computers in the past pharting around in BIOs. (I think of a service menu like the BIOs of a TV) One thing I learned about changing a BIOs key is do ONE thing at a time and don't drink beer while you are doing it. :D
I am interesed in the get together too...I am getting ready to start the buildout in my basement as soon as superbowl is over. I have my theater components in place...just have not finished off the room...and have to at least watch the superbowl.
smithb39 01-31-05, 02:11 PM I have a CM 4228 and rotor coming, I was wondering if anyone had the same or similar antenna and how they mounted it. I have a single story ranch house and was thinking of using a telescoping antenna mast and mount the antenna next to my garage. I thought this would be more stable than a tripod mount on the roof. Does anyone have any suggestions where I can buy a telescoping antenna mast?
Thanks,
Brent
I have similiar setup mine is strapped to chimney which sits in middle of my roofline. No holes in roof whatsoever would be best.
smithb39 02-01-05, 08:09 AM Thanks freon, but unfortunately I only have a metal chimney which would not hold an antenna.
Adrian D 02-01-05, 08:19 AM Brent,
I would check Lowes and Home Depot.
When I purchased my masts (not telescopic) at Lowes, I remember seeing some telescopic masts (this was at Lowes in Jackson). However, I've noticed that not all locations carry the same items, so I would call first.
Chris White 02-01-05, 10:49 AM So far, four people have expressed interest in a get-together of Lansing-area home theater enthusiasts. Not exactly overwhelming interest.
I emailed Gregg about having a meeting to coincide with his next trip to the area. He likes the idea, but said he wasn't sure yet whether he would be back in the area in March or April. I'll keep in touch with him.
mlcarson 02-01-05, 11:01 AM Make it 5 people....if you decide to do it.

Hey guys a couple of quick questions here,
First off I am in East Lansing 48823
Wanting to watch the superbowl on Fox and wondered
Will Fox 17 out of Grand Rapids show the game in true 1080i or 720?
(my Fox station in Chicago used to do 720 but not 1080i and used to call it HD, I didn't know if that was a FOX thing or just that Chicago affiliate).
Second, since I am in Lansing and am about oh...I dunno 60 miles from Grand Rapids, when I do a scan of the air (using wineguard sensor 2 from voom thru a voom box with ota input) I get signals that read in real time 38 then jumps to 81 then back to 38-39 then to 80-81 etc, very erratic...
Picture does come in but jerks now and then every few mins.
All my other ota hd stuff comes in at 95+
(also am I missing anything locally or is this about what everyone else is getting), I am pointed towards downtown Lansing btw.
6-1 WLNS 98 signal
10-1 WILX 97 signal
17-1 WXMI 38 jumps to 81, back and forth constant jumping
23-1 WKAR 99 signal
23-2 WKAR 99 signal
43-1,2,3,4 (all that pax stuff) I don't watch anyways
47-1 WSYM 95 signal
47-2 WSYM 95 signal
53-1 WLAJ 98 signal
53-2 WLAJ 97 signal
JUST this one channel FOX 17 (which seems to host the superbowl this year - my luck) is giving goofy signal strengths and having minor cut outs.
I am even seriously considering re-aiming that antenna which now aims directly at downtown lansing S-SW of me, DIRECTLY WEST towards Grand Rapids JUST in an attempt to get the Fox station in more stable or higher signal strength for this weekends game.
I will try this most likely as we were going to have a superbowl party, but wanted to know if anyone knows for sure if it will be a 1080i game cuz again my old Chicago Fox called 720 their HD which wasn't really hd to me and probably isn't worth the hassle of adjusting the antenna for a 720 image...
Thanks so much for any help or input, I have been here about a year but have gone thru some equipment changes, took off directv with ota hd box, added voom recently and overall (even tho vooms future is not certain) I really am liking voom and their ota antenna, just figures the one game I wanna watch the one channel I wanna watch it on, etc etc I can't get in solid and smooth ughhh...
Bill
I am such a dork, just was out there flippin channels when I realized American Idol being on (being on FOX) I realized 47 WSYM IS a LOCAL Fox affiliate....
And I do get them in solid and fine, so my problems are over I guess, but does anyone know if WSYM will broadcast the game Sunday in full 1080i ???
(im learning these channels in this area slow but sure)...hehe
Bill
smithb39 02-03-05, 08:29 AM I couldn't find anything on either website, but according to TitanTV they have 17-1 WXMI and 47-1 WSYM both listed as 720p for the Super bowl.
I live in Portland and get WXMI right know, just setup television and antenna last night. As a temporary solution I put a CM 4228 on my deck.
Brent
Chris White 02-03-05, 08:55 AM does anyone know if WSYM will broadcast the game Sunday in full 1080i
As Brent has correctly noted, WSYM will broadcast the game in 720p.
Will WXMI do 1080? if so it might be worth me messing with re-adjusting my antenna to try and pull it in stronger....
Chris White 02-03-05, 09:40 AM Will WXMI do 1080?
I seriously doubt it. I'm pretty sure they'll broadcast in 720p.
William M. 02-03-05, 11:23 AM This year Fox Sports announcers have all said that FOX uses 720P.
The announcers even have a phrase they say before the game about it being the finest in high definition broadcast.
Not that that is a true or correct statement. :)
I fully expect the Super Bowl to be in 720P.
Educate me here,,,
Maybe I am wrong but I have watched a few 720P programs and a few 1080i programs thru my local OTA, to me at least - 1080i looks ALOT better (again that's just me) or maybe its my tv or heck I dunno...
But are you guys at least a bit bummed it is 720P not 1080i?
I am :(
Chris White 02-03-05, 11:46 AM Action scenes are generally better with 720P. However, if the native resolution of your tv is 1080i, then 1080i will generally look better than 720p because it isn't being converted. On the other hand, how the broadcaster is using the bandwidth can make a big difference.
One of the main differentiators in the video quality of a high-def broadcast is the bitrate of the broadcasting station. Some stations broadcast using a single sub-channel while others split their bandwidth among up to four sub-channels. This splitting can result in a much bigger difference than the difference between 1080i and 720p.
Here's a great little free program you can use to determine the bitrate of hi-def recordings: TSReader Lite (http://www.coolstf.com/tsreader/)
As a frame of reference, I recently recorded a 1-minute HD sample from each of our local broadcasters. Here are the bitrates:
WLAJ: 13.55 Mbps (w/ 3.19 Mbps allocated to one SD sub-channel)
WLNS: 14.67 Mbps
WSYM: 12.18 Mbps (w/ 3.99 Mbps allocated to one SD sub-channel)
WILX: 14.66 Mbps
WKAR: 10.74 Mbps (w/ 5.20 Mbps allocated to one SD sub-channel)
Note that the worst of these (WKAR) is still significantly better than dvd. The max bitrate for dvds is 10 Mbps, but that most dvds average about 5 Mbps bitrate and Superbit dvds average closer to 8 Mbps.
William M. 02-03-05, 12:41 PM I did not know that!
Thanks Chris!
WLNS (1080i) sending 14.67 mps on one channel.
In your opinion, could this explain the occasional "blockyness" I see during a CBS HD football game when the camera pans quickly across the crowd or, is that a compression issue?
I wonder if there is any "signal loss" (that I would be able to see) if the local station passes the signal differently than the signal sent by the network. (ie Network uses 4 separate sub-channels to send the signal to local, local sends signal out on one channel.)
FTLOSM
I agree that 1080i may seem better but, I think back to the very first sporting event I watched in HD on my TV; 2004 MLB World Series Championship on FOX. To this day I feel the FOX 720P picture is superb. (IMHO)
I was floored by the picture and sound!
I can live with FOX 720P because it does the job and then some but, you have every right to demand better! :)
Adrian D 02-03-05, 12:47 PM Bill,
Check out this thread:

I'm not sure the 720/1080 difference is that great. ABC does 720, has forever and I'd be hard pressed to find a better looking show than NYPD Blue. Monday Night Football looks fine to me too, so I don't think there is anything inherently bad about the format. I really think the differences people see are a function of how the set they own handles the signal.
William M. 02-03-05, 04:30 PM Adrian D.
Thanks for the link.
Unfortunately I now feel like I have to get my eyes calibrated.
I always liked FOX HD picture quality. I mean sure there are problems here and there and the tickers annoy me sometimes but overall I like!
Still I am so looking forward to the Super Bowl in HD.
Thanks again! :)
Has anyone heard any updates on if/when WLNS will get DD 5.1 capabilities? With more and more CBS shows in DD 5.1 and the Grammys coming up it would be great to have them pumping out some good sound with that great picture...
AJerome 02-04-05, 07:51 AM Comcast will turn on Fox 47 HD (digital cable channel 103) Sunday from approximately 10 AM to midnight.

No problem. Actually, the link was aimed at FTLOSM, who I believe is also named Bill. I didn't notice that there were 2 Bills posting. Funny stuff.
My display is 1080i, and I get local HD from OTA.
ABC WLAJ MNF is the best picture for football, with CBS WLNS second, and Fox WSYM last.
I really wish ABC and CBS were in 5.1. Even though I don't favor the PQ of Fox, the sound is awesome.
garybliev 02-04-05, 03:17 PM WKAR is dynamically allocating the bits between the HD and the SD services with the HD at a 90 priority and the SD at an 80 priority.
In theory dynamic allocation, aka statistical multiplexing or variable bit rate, allows more efficient allocation of bits between the services, such that more bits are available when needed by the service. The difference in priority means that if there is a nearly simultaneous need for bits, that they will go to the HD service first.
As you probably know, WKAR is also broadcasting HD in 720p. We do receive the signal from PBS in 1080i and are converting it. We found that we are inducing less blockieness to the picture by using 720 than by maintaining 1080. Unfortunately, there is a slight reduction in perceived resolution on true HD programs. (most of the programs on PBS|HD are widescreen upconversions)
Regarding the blockieness evident in WLNS' picrute at 14.66 mbps, remember that the full bandwidth signal of an HDTV picture is about 1.5Gbps and is being bit rate reduced to about 45mbps (3%) by the network for transmission to the affilitates. The affiliates then bring it back to full bandwidth for processing then compress it again to about 15 Mbps(1%) for distribution to the home. When you are throwing away 99% of the content of the picture, artifacts are inherant.
Did anyone compare the State of the Union in HD between NBC (1080i) and Fox (720p) or ABC (720p).
Chris White 02-04-05, 04:24 PM WKAR is dynamically allocating the bits between the HD and the SD services with the HD at a 90 priority and the SD at an 80 priority.
It would be interesting to record sample segments and see how the bitrate allocation changes. I thought I recorded a minute sample with HD content for my test, but I wouldn't swear to it. It could have been upconverted SD.
We do receive the signal from PBS in 1080i and are converting it.
Unfortunately, I would guess that most HD-Ready displays have 1080i as the native resolution, so what happens is that you convert PBS's 1080i to 720p and then your viewer's display devices convert it back to 1080i. There has to be some penalty for all those conversions.
The affiliates then bring it back to full bandwidth for processing then compress it again to about 15 Mbps(1%) for distribution to the home.
Is 15 Mbps the typical bandwidth for WKAR?
When you are throwing away 99% of the content of the picture, artifacts are inherant.
I'd be willing to give up your SD sub-channel if that will help. ;)

Yes, I would guess the same.
Just out of curiousity, what is the native HD display for everyone's set?
As stated earlier, mine is 1080i.
mlcarson 02-04-05, 06:28 PM My Sony KDF-50WE655 is 1386x788 resolution so was going to be up/down converted no matter what. To me, WKAR generally looks the best but perhaps that's because they're always running something in hidef unlike the other networks.
I have sanyo z-2 front projection its native 720p.
my ota tuner though only has 480p/1080i which is the sylvania one that sears had for awhile.
TTRider 02-04-05, 10:21 PM My Epson TW100 projector is native 720p and my Samsung SIR T151 STB is switchable between 720p and 1080i. I'd prefer my STB just pass through the received resolution so the projector could convert it as needed. That way I would eliminate some double conversion.
maggiefan 02-06-05, 12:33 AM 1080i, 34" Tosihiba crt hd. Can also display 480p.

15,000 is the maximum HD bit rate.
Video total 17,000
HD Video 10,000 - 15,000
HD Audio 1 422
HD Audio 2 211
SD Video 2,000 - 5,000
SD Audio 1 422
SD Audio 2 211
PSIP 250
unallocated 374
Channel 23-2 is used to feed several cable television head ends, which then use it to feed the analog distribution on their systems. I don't think it will be going away.
Panny PT50LC-13, native rez 720p.
washking 02-10-05, 01:45 PM I have went back and forth with the chief over at WLNS several times throughout the NFL season about the picture being very blocky on pans and other action shots. I was told they were upgrading the HD plant, but have no timetable. I could barely watch CBS football this year. It doesn't matter what your display is....it's there. I've seen it on all sizes and types available to me. The odd thing always was why max out at 15mbps when not using a subchannel? It's just not enough bandwidth for sports at 1080i. Hopefully something changes sooner that later. The stations doing 720p generally look "fine" to me....but not great. All have artifacts and some blocks during busy scenes, couldn't you see the "swimming grass" during the superbowl? But, let's give the broadcasters some credit and time. WLNS was the first to jump(I believe) and therefore have some equipment that does need upgrading. In fact they really couldn't even see what they were broadcasting on a HD monitor at the time I was speaking with them. For the others....well...it is not cheap or easy to broadcast....and there is a learning curve for everyone. I think the HD we are seeing now is probably the worst we will see (I hope) and that things will improve over time....
VIVOtheFURY 02-13-05, 09:43 PM Zenith C32V37 - Native 1080i and 480p
WLNS Power level is bouncing all over the place tonight while trying to watch the Grammys... really sick of it cutting out!!! Now Have Silver Sensor pointed almost straight up.. for some bizarre reason.. that's working better than directly at WLNS. Still irritating.. Come on WLNS make a deal with Comcast and get on cable.
Nice having the Superbowl on Comcast last weekend.. foolishly hoped that Channel 47HD(103) was there to stay.. LOL! Anyone want to play Lets-Make-a-deal?
SteveMSU 02-17-05, 11:53 AM What's the farthest away from the WLNS tower that anybody is picking up their HD signal with an indoor antenna? I'm about 50 miles southwest in Battle Creek, and was curious if I had a chance. I'm in a 2nd story apartment so I can't get an outdoor antenna. The local CBS (WWMT) is a very low power station on bandwith channel 2, with their antennas 30 miles away. Any suggestions?
smithb39 02-17-05, 12:17 PM I live 29.1 miles away according to AntennaWeb and I can get WLNS 6-1 with a CM 4228 antenna with CM 7777 preamplifier placed inside my screened in porch. I'm not sure the signal strength I would guess 60's. I know the screened in porch gets better reception than if it was fully enclosed and the CM 4228 isn't designed to receive VHF.
My guess, but it would be difficult to receive with an outdoor antenna, and even more inside. What is the relationship of your apartment to the direction of WLNS?
Good Luck,
Brent
noffsin6 02-18-05, 02:52 PM I live about 7 miles away from WLNS (according to antennaeweb) and I still have trouble with their signal using my indoor Silver Sensor (3rd floor apartment). I get a strong signal if I point my antennae to the North West or directly North (the station should be southeast of me) but it frequently fluctuates. The signal goes from about 85-90% to 75-85% almost constantly and often it will drop to less than 25% and break go out.
I don't have a problem with any other stations in the Lansing area and can sometimes get a signal from the ABC station in Flint (60 miles away). Stations that are 3-4 times as far away give me a stronger signal.
I think this is partly caused by their equpiment and partly caused by buildings in between my Apartment and the station, but that's just a wild guess.
I'm 50+ miles out here in Flushing and I was able to get WLNS without a problem when the circuit that powers my preamp tripped. That effectively took the antenna out of the equation. ;)

I have read things (not sure where) that if you are too close you can have problems receiving, and any amplification or strong antenna can worsen it. I know that I am about 30 miles away and receive a consistent 90% signal.
I would try simply using a pair of rabbit ears and see if you have any better results?

Through the magic of virtual channel numbers: channel 6-1 is really UHF channel 59.
Workindood 03-05-05, 07:42 AM Big stinkin' deal. They seemed to confuse more then enlighten. Also where are the HD channels they have promised to bring us. We still do not have CBS. (And the Master's is coming quick) ABC, FOX, TNT, etc. I am tired of this B.S. Detroit and other Michigan areas have these stations? Why is Lansing screwed? I am tired of hearing that THEY (Comcast) is in negotiations with the affiliates. As I said this is total Bull SH!T!! We pay enough for this damn cable crap in the first place.
If I didn't live in a tree infested neighborhood then I would get a dish.
Anyone else make heads or tails from this letter?
garybliev 03-08-05, 08:32 AM In the Lansing metro area, Comcast has two local stations on the HD tier: WILX and WKAR. They briefly (Superbowl Sunday) had WSYM.
Neither Dish nor DirecTV have any of the Lansing HD channels available over satellite. Both services are beginning to roll out HD channels in selected markets, I think Detroit is one of them. DirecTV has announced intent to have HD from all local stations on their new satellites.... but that is years away as satellites have to be built and launched.
My understanding is that the other stations are asking Comcast to pay them for the right to carry their HD signals, Comcast is apparently not willing to do that.
As a public broadcaster, WKAR's HD signal, like our analog signal, is available to all cable and satellite services including Comcast at no charge.
Workindood, why not just do OTA?
Workindood 03-09-05, 07:28 AM The reason I will not go with OTA is the money. I can not afford to spend anymore right now on equipment for my TV set-up. Mrs Dood has been very patient with me so far. Spring is near and Her and I have other home improvements we need to address.
Is anyone getting a signal for WILX? I'm not able to even get a blip.
Workindood 03-09-05, 03:28 PM Yesterday it was breaking up real bad on the cable HD/Digital feed. I had to switch to analog just to finish watching the news at 6:30-7:00pm.
I was told by the local cable co they are having hardware issues and need to call in someone to fix it. They did not have any specifics
maggiefan 03-10-05, 12:25 AM I'm in Lansing and have Comcast HD service and am not getting any signal on WILX HD since Tuesday night. All other channels are ok.
maggiefan 03-10-05, 01:46 PM Just talked to Comcast about WILX hd and they said it is a network problem, not Comcast. So it must be a problem with the WILX digital transmitter. All the other hd channels are ok, and so is the WILX analog channel. I sent an email to WILX engineering dept. I will post if I hear back from them.

mangopony 03-10-05, 02:42 PM just to confirm, for several days, digital NBC in Lansing has been down..no signal.
maggiefan 03-10-05, 03:29 PM Ok, guys thanks for the info. Just glad it's not a problem on my end..
maggiefan 03-10-05, 04:18 PM Just got this reply from WILX.
Our studio to transmitter link failed. We used our live truck to get the signal to the transmitter for our analog signal, but could not do the same for the digital. Parts were promised overnight, but with the snow storm on the east coast, they did not arrive until today. We restored the link this afternoon and the digital transmission was resumed. Just to let you know, tonight we are planning on working on our Stereo Generator and audio processing. This will require that both transmitters be turned off. We plan on starting at about 1:30am and will be back on the air again before 5am. I appreciate getting your email when you see a problem. Having extra eyes and ears always helps. Thank You. Gary

mangopony 03-10-05, 08:09 PM Yes, now getting NBC DT, Lansing. Now, I have another problem; am not getting DT 51, ABC in Lansing. I can also get ABC from Flint but I was wondering if anyone else was not getting ABC in Lansing. My equipment seems ok and I am getting 'no signal' when I tune to channel 51 digital. All other digital stations are OK.

Do any of you lansing area guys have a dedicated front projection theater room that you built??
mangopony 03-10-05, 10:32 PM freon: I have a Panny plasma and a Infocus 4805 with a 92 inch white matte screen with tripod. I move the screen between 2 levels in the home.

Also 3 Dish 811s to go along with each.
Guess I couldn't get enough...
smithb39 03-11-05, 10:00 AM Does anyone know what WLNS's plan is for broadcasting HD feeds of the NCAA tournament? I know CBS is broadcasting 39 of the 64 games in HD, but was wondering how or if WLNS broadcasted any HD last year?
Thanks,
Brent
mangopony 03-11-05, 10:12 AM smithb39..send WLNS an e-mail asking about NCAA in HD. As far as I know, WLNS does carry just about all of the HD sent out by CBS. See no reason why they would not carry NCAA Tourament.
By the way, digital ABC, Lansing still ..no signal..Friday morning

maggiefan 03-15-05, 11:37 AM Here's some interesting news for those that have Comcast cable.
TiVo to Make Customized Version for Comcast
By ANICK JESDANUN, Associated Press Writer
21 minutes ago
NEW YORK - TiVo Inc., the struggling pioneer of digital video recorders, will make a customized version for Comcast cable subscribers, the two companies announced Tuesday. TiVo's share price soared.
The move will increase TiVo's presence in American homes as it faces competition from generic DVRs offered directly by leading cable companies. Comcast Corp. expects to begin marketing the new DVRs, which will carry the TiVo brand, by mid- to late 2006.
"The strong TiVo brand, the clear track record of customer loyalty it has and its cutting-edge features make this a terrific partnership and exciting new product for Comcast," Steve Burke, Comcast Cable president, said in a statement.
The deal calls for TiVo to adapt its software to work on Comcast's existing DVR platform, and it allows TiVo to extend to Comcast subscribers the advertising it sells in the form of interactive video clips that automatically appear in the TiVo menu.
TiVo's share price jumped 48 percent, or $1.85, to $5.68 on the Nasdaq Stock Market in Tuesday morning trading. Comcast shares rose 19 cents to $34.18 on Nasdaq.
TiVo has been synonymous with digital video recording since it helped pioneered the industry five years ago. It controlled an estimated one third of the market in 2004.
But the small company faces intense comeptition from deep-pocketed cable and satellite operators, which can afford to subsidize hardware costs and already have tens of millions of customers on their rosters. Those rivals charge consumers less per month for digital recording - about $5 to $10, compared to TiVo's $13.
Meanwhile, TiVo lost its exclusive digital recording supplier stance with satellite provider DirecTV, and it has aggressively courted the cable industry for deals similar to the one announced Tuesday.
TiVo now has more than 3 million subscribers. But in the quarter that ended Jan. 31, the Alviso, Calif.-based company posted losses of $33.7 million, wider than the $12.4 million loss in the same period a year earlier.
TiVo president Marty Yudkovitz resigned earlier this year, and chief executive Mike Ramsay said he would step down from the helm as soon as a replacement is found.
Financial terms of the multi-year, non-exclusive deal with the Philadelphia-based Comcast were not disclosed.
nettleman 03-15-05, 03:35 PM FYI - Reply from WLNS regarding HDTV and the Tourney
WLNS TV-6 will carry HD Feeds...they may not be the same feed as the analogy feed, due to the fact that CBS will send HD Feeds from 2 arena's a day from the 4 that will hold games. Michigan State's game on Friday Night at 9:40pm will be in HD!
WLNS will try to air as many games in HD that we can!
Thank you for your interest in WLNS TV-6.

smithb39 03-15-05, 04:19 PM nettleman, I just got the same response from WLNS Program Director. I guess I'll have to place analogy tv next to the big screen to see if I can get two different games.

washking 03-17-05, 03:20 PM Well, all the things that bothered me about WLNS broadcasts of football are still there....i was hoping for improvement. The players are surrounded by a halo of blocks, pans and action breaks up into blocks...not enough bandwidth being used still...15mps is just not cutting it for sports in 1080i.
smithb39 03-18-05, 11:25 AM I agree, didn't get the chance to see any football on WLNS, but I notice the halo blocks when watching basketball. Wife didn't notice it, but she has a short attention span with sports.
VIVOtheFURY 03-18-05, 10:04 PM Since they don't have a sub-channel, you'd think we'd get a perfect HD feed straight through from CBS, but it looks like they're doing some funky re-processing at WLNS before sending it back out. Their encoder hardware/software is horrible! Anyone know who the engineer is at WLNS?
Looks like a DVD that's encoded as "B" frame first, but is flagged as "A" frame in the IFO file. Hate to admit I accidently burned one that way once.. gave similar type of video problem during panning and side to side motion scenes.
Have to admit it was nice to PIP the SD and HDTV feeds with different games yesterday :-)
nettleman 03-18-05, 10:49 PM Be nice if they had a sub channel during the tourney
VIVOtheFURY 03-18-05, 10:52 PM If they wanted to drop the HD feed, they could actually broadcast all 4 games at once. As bad as their HD feed is, I'm not sure that would be a huge loss.. Then again.. if their HD feed is any indication. They couldn't handle enconding and HD+SD.. much less 4 SD feeds.
nettleman 03-19-05, 12:16 AM I must not be as discriminating as you folk
I think the feed is spectacular. It's choppy at times when they switch to secondary cameras but overall it's better than the alternative.
washking 03-19-05, 02:05 PM I don't want to post an address here, but you can email engineering by checking out the WLNS homepage....I have sent them one recently but have gotten no response...I did get responses during football season stating that they had plans to upgrade equipment, but doesn't look like that has happened yet. I tend to think that whatever encoder they are using is out of date first gen technology...just my guess though. nettleman...what type/size display are you watching on? If I was watching on say a 34inch display from 8 to 10 feet I would say it looks very good.....but that isn't why I spent money on my display...50inch from 10 feet should be fine...but I see the blocks and artifacts easily from that distance...I have seen many good signals through my setup and they don't display the same problems. WLNS has the encoder sending out bitrate around 15mbps...that isn't enough for 1080i sports at all.
TTRider 03-19-05, 03:19 PM I agree with Nettleman. For those who find a few breakouts intolerable, there’s always the analog SD signal to watch. There won’t be any breakups or blockiness there. But of course, you may loose a little detail – like being able to read the numbers on the players back.
For those getting ready to send e-mails to WLNS complaining about the signal, just remember they pioneered HD in the Lansing area when most other stations were just looking for reasons to delay the expense. And yes, that’s probably why they have 1st gen equipment.
I was able to do a comparison of quality between WLNS and WWJ Detroit earlier an confirm what many here are saying. On wide shots they look quite similar, but in closeups of a player running there was a marked difference in the background (spectators in stands). With WWJ you could make out details, with WLNS there was a great deal of blocking. I ran both in slow motion on my HD TiVo and the difference were quite evident.
I hope WLNS can upgrade soon, besides the picture the DD 5.1 sound was great. WLNS is my preferred CBS outlet since their signal is rock solid but I have to admit I'm watching WWJ more now, even though I do get some dropout with them.

I'm watching on a 110" screen with a BenQ 8700
I see the blocks and the blurry fast motion too, but it's only on replays with secondary cameras.
Do I wish it wasn't there, yes. Does it make me want to go upstairs and watch the old RCA.
Nope.
And BTW, the sound is awesome.

Chris White 03-20-05, 04:09 PM 246pm - I decided WLNS wasn't going to flip the switch so I called the newsroom.
259pm - WLNS finally throws the switch.
You are all welcome. ;)
TTRider 03-20-05, 05:12 PM I also called shortly after the start of the game. The person in the newsroon couldn't raise anyone in engineering so she walked down there. Apparently they were having some equipment problem.

washking 03-21-05, 10:00 AM It is obvious that the artifacts and blocking bother some more than others...for different reasons. The fact is though, that I can see them with different monitors and receivers without having to "look" for them. Now, I don't advocate "complaining" to WLNS or any other broadcaster for that matter. I do however suggest that if you are seeing these problems you certainly can let them know. When I was talking to the chief at WLNS in the fall, they weren't even aware there was a problem as they didn't have sufficient means of monitoring the signal. That may sound strange, but I think in most cases if they can verify they are transmitting and that everything is working...pq isn't the biggest issue. If the picture is great to you, that's wonderful....just realize others may not agree and understand that it could be better. I have plenty of patience for WLNS...I used to work there....the chief isn't who it used to be though when I was there so I don't have the benefit of that relationship anymore..
Workindood 03-24-05, 06:44 PM My HD channels (and some SD ones) are stating "To Be Announced" in the guide. I assuming it is just the premium channels. Anyone else having this problem? I called Comcast and they "reset" the box to no avail. I have a tech coming out Friday the 25th.
Any Ideas? Bad Cable Box?
maggiefan 03-24-05, 08:26 PM Did you lose power to the box recently? That would cause it to lose the guide data. It should download it in the next few hours.
Workindood 03-25-05, 12:15 AM No. I didn't lose power. I turned it on and off to reset it myself. This is going on about a week now. I thought that Comcast was upgrading the service, that is why I didn't give it a second thought at first. Since no one else is having this problem it must be a faulty cable box on my end. All my channels work, I just can't tell what is on in the guide.
Workindood 03-25-05, 04:23 PM Comcast sent out the Cable Guy today. His name is Kip. A fine individual. He took a look at my cable box and figured maybe it was the older cable lines coming into the house. He ran all new cable from the pole to the inside of the basement. He put on brand new splitters as well. Didn't fix the problem. Then he replaced the cable box. He figured it was probably the box but he felt the lines were too old anyways and it can't hurt to run new ones.
Now that is SERVICE! The PQ is a tad sharper now. He was going to try to give me a DVR. He thought he had an extra in the truck. But it was for another customer. I asked the Comcast Rep on the 800 number if they can bring a DVR at the same time. She said it wasn't possible. Kip just laughed at that. He would have had no problem adding that to the work order. So I will drive over to Miller Rd. Monday and swap out my box for a DVR.
He also did not charge me for doing anything in the house. He figured I spend enough per month.
The guy even worked through his lunch hour. I offered to make him some lunch, but he only took a can of Coke.
This fine young man made my day.....

I live near the airport off of N. Grand River.
I went to swap out my HT box for a DVR at Miller Rd. Comcast. I was surprised that so many people go there to pay their bill. What is so hard about using a $.37 stamp? How annoying to wait in line like that. I figured many of these "customers" are re-instating their cable. More then a few of them got their cable turned off. I am glad I do not have to go down to Consumer's Energy or the Board of Water & Light. Those same "customers" are probably there as well re-instating their power and water.
maggiefan 03-30-05, 08:53 AM I've been to the Miller Rd. office couple of times over the last year, and both times the lobby was about full. I think you're right about most of them are getting service turned back on. Must be you have to come in to do that.
MY 65 inch Mitsu has been down for the last week now, the red converg went out AGAIN (2x here in the last 3 years) it is under warranty still, but I still have to wait for the repairman to come Monday and I hope it can be fixed vs having to wait another week or two for parts, or worse them having to move it (there goes my ISF work)...
I moved a 27 inch non hd into the livingroom just to watch tv on for now but man I miss my local HD content...
My wife loves no big hdtv though, she had a color changing candle party the other night ( www.staceyaustin.com if anyone wants to see one) and for ONCE she didn't have to tell me to turn off the tv and leave the living room while she was having a party - LOL...
Does anyone locally here still have VOOM besides me? I haven't followed up on if they are even still broadcasting (box is hooked upto hdtv that is broken), just wondering if I should even pay that next bill in the mail LOL...

Workindood 04-05-05, 08:13 AM Larry,
Any idea if we are getting anymore HD channels?
Is there any hope of seeing the Masters in HD?
danb5521 04-05-05, 09:59 AM I had the same question on the Masters. What about the first two rounds that are on "CBS Television HD Network"? Whats the best way to get this?
Chris White 04-05-05, 11:16 AM Whats the best way to get this?

:D
danb5521 04-05-05, 11:21 AM Called WLNS and they said they hoped to do the HD feed of the Masters on Thurs/Fri., but that it could be impacted by the Spartan women (!?) parade or something. This would be disasterous. Is Universal HD available locally anywhere?
TTRider 04-05-05, 11:25 AM Chris - I like your solution! It's worked for me for over two years.
maggiefan 04-05-05, 11:55 AM It doesn't look like Comcast added any new HD channels, still waiting for CBS, ABC and Fox. Chris has the best solution for sure, but that's not an option for me, apartment dweller.....:(
Workindood 04-05-05, 12:36 PM Larry,
Yes...Mr White is quite bright. However, I live in a Tree Infested Neighborhood. Also, I will not pay $300.00 for a tuner. There is only so much Mrs Dood will take.
Chris White 04-05-05, 12:47 PM that's not an option for me, apartment dweller....
Don't be too sure. The antenna shown above is mounted on the roof and connected to my htpc. BUT, I have another computer (ground floor) with a FusionHDTV card in it. For it, I have a CM 4221A antenna sitting on the floor behind a file cabinet (so that it's out of sight). I get all the locals with plenty of signal -- and that's from Williamston.
Workindood 04-05-05, 01:01 PM Chris,
What are you using for a HTPC? I want to build/buy one only for one thing.
To store and burn off of my Comcast DVR. I was looking for a Frag Box style so I can hide the thing under my TV shelf.
Chris White 04-05-05, 01:18 PM Go to my website, click on Equipment, and you'll see all the equipment I use in my home theater, including my htpc.
maggiefan 04-06-05, 12:05 AM Chris, you get all the locals with an indoor antenna? That's great. The problem for me is I live in a high rise and there is lots of metal all around. Steel framework, even steel wall studs. I imagine it would be a reception nightmare. Anyway I would have to buy a OTA tuner just to find out if it would work, funds don't premit that now. If it wasn't for all the metal all around it would be a sure bet as I'm right in the middle of town and on the 11th floor, so I've sure got the height. Do you know if the locals are broadcasting at full power on the digital channels yet?
Chris White 04-06-05, 09:47 AM I don't have any idea what power they're using. I bet Gary does. If you're on the 11th floor, I would by really surprised if you couldn't get all the local stations with a simple omni-directional.
TTRider 04-06-05, 03:42 PM Walmart is selling a tuner for $200. Bought one for my son and it works fine up in the Cadillac area. With Walmart's great return policy, if you don't get any reception, just return it. I'm in the DeWitt area and use a very small double bowtie mounted in my attic of our single story house. Great reception on all locals both on a Samsung STB and a MyHD card in my PC.
I get all the locals plus WJRT 12 from Flint using a Silver Sensor velcroed to the back of my set.
danb5521 04-07-05, 10:23 AM Where is a good place in Lansing to buy a DB2 or comparable antenna? Need to get one for the Masters today.
Workindood 04-07-05, 10:26 AM Well I just got off the phone from Comcast about a "special" showing of the Masters on cable here in the Lansing area.
Doesn't look good. *sigh*
But then we all could just show up a Mr Chris White's home at 4 pm today to see it on his wonderful set-up.
I'll bring a big bag of greasy chips. :D (I hope he is not on of those guys that doesn't let you smoke in his home)
All in good fun....Chris
I am so depressed. After seeing the Masters last year (Thurs-Fri on INHD) I thought by this time this year we would have full HD and this would not be a problem. The Masters was the first HD program in our home last year after we got our HD set-up.
Chris White 04-07-05, 10:32 AM Where is a good place in Lansing to buy a DB2 or comparable antenna? Your best bet is probably Radio Shack.

Workindood 04-07-05, 10:44 AM Chris,
Yes...your Wife does deserve more. How about a nice bottle of red wine?
But I was just kidding as you know. I would never just *pop* by anyones home. I wish my in-laws would learn that. More then once we have had to run and get dressed in a hurry. :D

Finally got my set working yesterday afternoon!
I really missed hd for that week
good to see voom is still on too!

maggiefan 04-07-05, 04:36 PM Has anyone even heard anything about when Comcast will pick up the other locals for our area, it's sucks just having two local stations in high def. Bummer...:( It justs seems wrong with all those free signals flying around....LOL.
Workindood 04-07-05, 04:58 PM No idea. I just called WLNS to talk to someone about the Masters in HD on Comcast. No one is there now....then asked if I wanted to leave a voice mail. Grrrrr!!

Unfortunately, those free signals are not always free to Comcast. From what I've heard, some of the commercial stations have decided that their HD signals should be worth x many dollars (or cents) per subscriber. The cable companies disagree.
At WKAR our HD signal is made available to Comcast, and any other cable system requesting, at no charge. You would have to ask the commercial stations their policy.
maggiefan 04-09-05, 01:46 AM I understand that it is not as simple as I made it sound. I'm sure there are many issues involved, not the least of which is money. These things just take some time, just have to be patient.
danb5521 04-11-05, 10:32 AM Unfortunately, Comcast moves at a glacial pace and really could care less about it's customers. I can't even get NBA League Pass on digital cable here in Lansing. Clearly, if Comcast charges money for an HD package the locals would want a piece of that pie. Luckily, I had great results over the weekend with my Silver Sensor.
Also, Radio Shack stopped selling their great little $15 antenna for some reason.
J.P.Heff 04-22-05, 12:13 PM FTLOSM.........I feel your pain with video display down. My Seleco CRT projector went down the latter part of March, (would not power up). Not much to do here so had to ship back to SIM2 in Florida. For me that is a nerve racking experience, as I had to do it two years ago, to the month, to be re-tubed. Finally got it back this Wednesday, and back up on ceiling (PCI module). Needed help for that. I expected the picture quality to be much worse, but it is watchable. Still needs a conv/calibr touch up though. When it came back from re-tubing it was a nine hour process. Ouccchhhh. Missing the picture is one thing but having the sound system back, Wow. Maybe sometimes you start to take that for granted, and I had 5.1 on a small system in bedroom, but no comparison. Good luck to you and I pray it can be repaired in house.....
I see some discussion on a topic of interest for me and thats Comcast. I still have *D* but would consider switching for more that just one reason. Compression of HD broadcasts.,MPEG4, this July?, requiring different STB, slow to add HD and most important would like to re-roof and if I do, remove dish and Channelmaster "QUANTUM" from my roof, permanently. I just wish as does everybody else that they were doing all local's in HD as that would be the clincher for me. I even stopped into both their offices, in Lans and E.L. this week and asked to talk to anyone with knowledge and information about this and just got a dumb stare. I guess they are just there for people who have had service disconnected to come in and pay to be re-instated. I probably could do the locals with a Square Shooter mounted on peak. We put one up at a friends in Mason and it did a nice job on his off air SD channels. He has not yet bought a HD television, but I am sure he will soon.
Well if I hear of anything of interest will be sure to pass it on for our local group. Everybody take care and hopefully next year I will be able to watch Masters in HD without having display down. Go Tigers...............................

Workindood 04-23-05, 09:41 AM Any seen channel 204 as TNT-HD? I noticed it last night before I went to bed. However, it says I have to ORDER IT. I guess I'll call them up and ask why it does not work and they will reset my box and screw me up for the weekend. I would have called last night but others didn't want me to have Comcast delete out all the channels while they were watching them.
I never have been a big fan of TNT. To many commercials and the compress and speed up movies on that station. Now if TCM becomes Hi-Def then we got something here.
EDIT: Learned something this morning. I called Comcast to see why I am not receiving TNT-HD. They said my Platinum Package was "Grandfathered in". And to receive any new channels I have to change my package "Coding". (at no cost to me) The kicker is that it is approx $3.00 cheaper to change to there new coding of this Platinum Package. I asked how long has this been going on? They said over a year. WHAT! I have been paying $3.00 more for no reason? GRRRR! So the CSR re-coded my service and now TNT-HD works fine. I can't get any of my money back of course, however, I did ask him for some free coupons for pay-per-view. Small victory, better than nothing. So my bill goes down from $99.00 to $96.00.
Anyone ever heard of this crap?
J.P.Heff 04-25-05, 10:23 PM Just curious if others experienced this Monday night 4/25/05....................
WSYM-DT Fox, no reception for 24, not even a header???????
WILX-DT NBC, Medium broadcast with picture 1/3 the size, with black border all four sides. When this happened a few weeks ago for "Crossing Jordan", I called the broadcast engineering dept. and they said they were just showing what network was feeding through. I said that the SD channel displays this show in widescreen, and it appears they are trying to put that same format on the HD feed. He was no help. This is about the 3-4 time that I have seen their widescreen show displayed this way on the HD feed. Has anyone else experienced this? called. Thanks Much.

John Yes, I can confirm WSYM was off the air on their digital, GRRRRR! Had to watch 24 on cable!
I have my HD TiVo set to record Crossing J and Grey's on Sunday night. Luckily I was watching CJ last night and saw it was LB on WILX. Flipped over to WDIV Detroit and it was full screen HD, someone at WILX is falling down on the job, same with ER last week, but this time both WILX and WDIV were LB, but WEYI Flint was not. Wish the NBC folks would get their act together.
BTW Medium was in HD tonight at least on WDIV...
J.P.Heff 04-26-05, 09:31 AM Thanks much for the reply's
That answers both questions. BTW when I experienced this video problem with CJ and Medium a week or two ago, I tried WOOD, which I can receive and it was the same. Must be a NBC Network issue?? You would think the broadcasting dept would be viewing HD and notice these huge abnormalities. go figure.
John
J.P.Heff 04-26-05, 10:24 AM Just some updates regarding last few posts--WSYM-DT & WILX-DT
I just got off phone with production engineering from both stations. Fox went down Sunday and they are awaiting a part for repair. Working on it today, not sure if it will be up and running tonight.
NBC--spoke with Gary, in engineering for ten minutes, nice guy. They had set up their Master Control Board to automatically sense HD feed and relays would "flip" the switch, so to speak. About three weeks ago they lost a couple of relays so everything has had to be done manually till repaired and they fell asleep at the switch. He was thankful of my call and hopes things will be OK till parts come in but if I ever see a problem call or e-mail him. Very nice person and quite helpful. Also they have a new Transmitter ordered which will be here in July (10x power), the balance of equipment will be in by fall, so he is hopeful this new Transmitter will be up and running Mid-Fall. This will sure help with dropouts, etc. He also stated that Network sometimes cancels HD programs at the last minute and just sends SD. He did not say what programs.
engineering@wilx.com
Sure hope Fox is up and running for 'Idol' & 'House'
Take Care...John

Take Care...John I'm assuming that is just a euphemism, and I'm sure that they are all great guys, but I just don't get that excuse. I know this is just TV , so it's not life or death, but still. I worked for many years in radio, and yes, in any kind of broadcasting, there can be a lot of things to keep track of, automated or not. Sometimes people mess up, but this seems to be an ongoing issue with stations all over the country (judging by reading other city's threads.) I guess sponsors just aren't that concerned about HDTV for now, otherwise it would get more focus.

For me it's not a widespread problem, but an NBC problem. As I stated in my previous post I get 3 NBC HD feeds. I get 3 ABC feeds and 2 1/2 CBS feeds, 4 PBS feeds, 2 FOX feeds. The only network with consistent problems is NBC. I have never had a problem with ABC flipping the switch, it rare the CBS messes up, and NBC constantly does. Having this many sources I can say that it not a local problem it has to originate at the network level, either through communication, equipment, or perhaps leadership - maybe NBC just doesn't care.
J.P.Heff 04-26-05, 02:22 PM I was simply trying to provide some information regarding this issue. I will know better in the future. Yes, NBC, is the only problem 'Network' that I experience, and locally WLNS still has problems with their amps, causing drop-outs. I have been viewing HD since it was just HBO plus a demo channel, then WLNS-HD (CBS) arrived. It has been frustrating at times, however when speaking with local stations, I always found that courteous, well thought out concerns and questions were handled in a more timely manner, had I been yelling and screaming.

Thanks for the heads-up. Found 204 and it was marked as yours was initially. A quick 3 minute call resolved the problem (but no, I wasn't being billed wrongly, which is too bad as I would have liked $3 or anything off THAT bill).
Finally a little traction from Comcast.

You are welcome. Comcast sure is pushy with their "messages" when it comes to Pay-Per-View, but I saw nothing about TNT-HD in the message window. Seems they are always selling some boxing match that I would not watch for free. :)
maggiefan 04-26-05, 05:53 PM I got the message this morning that TNT HD was now on our channel line up. I got that screen about having to order it when I tried it. So I called, he hit the box and it's woking ok now. He said I should have it with the package I have, (digital classic and HD channels).

Larry,
That is what I expected to hear when I called Comcast. I had the same thing happen when I got Cinemax-HD. I had to call to get it working. Took a couple of minutes...Whaa-LA...Done.
This deal where they told me I was on a older coding system for a couple of years still perplexes me. I got HD a little over a year ago, why didn't I have this coding problem then? Since I got HD they have added more then one station and no coding problems. The more I think about it, the more I feel they owe me $3.00/month retroactive from the start of my Platinum Package. I am still waiting for OnDemand. They tell me this time it will be up and running in June. I won't hold my breath though.
EDIT: On a side note, Comcast called me last night to sell me on their Internet Package. That was annoying, since I got their ISP over a week ago. The woman on the phone kept on yapping even though I told her I already have Comcast Internet. She was interrupting a good war I was having with Egypt in Civilization III. It is nice to have Panzers when everyone else has Knights. :D
danb5521 04-27-05, 03:45 PM For everyone getting 204-TNT HD, where are you located? I'm in the Okemos area and still haven't gotten it. :(

No hard feelings, but for years East Lansing had broadband internet and good cable compared to Lansing. It was so frustrating to only have dial-up when a few miles down the road you all had SPEED!
Looks like the pendulum swung the other way...But you are not that far behind.
MooTheKow 05-10-05, 07:42 AM I currently live in okemos and use comcast. Does anyone else have tons of problems with NBC's high def feed on channel 232? It seems like it's always either completely down or up and nearly unwatchable. It is constantly dropping audio (basically audio cuts out for a second or two.. very annoying) along with the picture getting all blocky. Is this a problem specific to the cable to my house, a problem with comcast HD in general - or just NBC's feed? Anyone else experience any of this? Thanks.
For what it's worth - i've had a cable repair guy out recently when my cable modem was acting up and he seemed to think the cable signal to my house was fine... so i can't figure out what's going on. My HD subscription is practically worthless at this point though since comcast is being so slow about adding any new channels...
Adrian D 05-11-05, 08:16 AM I receive NBC (WILX) via OTA.
On Saturday, I watched the Kentucky Derby as well as Saturday Night Live. During the Derby, the audio would get "scratchy" at times. During SNL, the scratchy sound was more regular and a little louder. Pretty annoying.
I don't know if this is a common problem with NBC's national feed or just WILX. I don't watch enough NBC HD to know.
As for the video, I didn't see any problems.
Chris White 05-13-05, 12:12 PM Gregg Loewen will be in the Lansing area on Monday, May 23. I'm thinking of hosting a mini-meet that evening at my home -- say 6-10pm. I'll provide snacks and you bring whatever you want to drink.
If you are interested in having your tv/projector calibrated, you would be welcome to bring it to my house that evening. Gregg will demonstrate the ISF calibration process (except duvatyne lining) and you'll get a 50% discount.
Or, if you're interested in a calibration but don't want to move your set, you can host the mini-meet at your house and get the discount.
Please respond in this thread and let me know if you're interested in the mini-meet so I can plan accordingly. Also, if you're interested in bringing over your tv or hosting the meet yourself, let me know that as well.
Thanks,
Chris
Workindood 05-14-05, 01:45 AM Chris,
I am interested in the mini meet on the 23rd. I have a deposit down with Greg for him to calibrate my TV. I am waiting for him to contact me as to when he has time to come over and get mine done. It is way to heavy to drag over to your place. :) (Hmm..Maybe I can strap it on top of my Buick Lesabre and drive it through town)
My only problem with the 23rd is that it is Monday. That is my Longest Day at work. I can not guarantee I can make it over to your home that evening.
How much is a normal price for calibration?
I have a sanyo z2 projector with a DIY screen.
The 23rd is cutting it close for me to host something, My carpet is scheduled to be installed on the 19th. It was back ordered though so I would not be positive on that.
Check out my progress so far though
Workindood 05-16-05, 09:24 AM freon,
Check out Greg's web site. It has a price list. Mine is a Tube TV so my price would be different then yours.
I am sure glad Chris White wrote in this forum because I was wondering WHY I haven't heard from Greg yet. Then it dawned on me. I forgot to let him know my NEW email address. So I fired off an emergency email to Greg. He was wondering what happened to me. So everything is fine now, except he wants to come over to my place at 2pm next Monday. I am just leaving work then from Novi. It takes me at least an hour to get home to Lansing. That is IF there is no traffic problems along the way.
Workindood 05-23-05, 06:14 PM I just had the pleasure of meeting Gregg Loewen. He came over to my house and calibrated my Sony KV34HS510 TV. All I can say is W O W! First thing I watched was Deadwood. (On the HD-DVR) Night and Day. It was very interesting to see how he does it. He is a true Professional and a Gentleman.
Chris White did offer to have a mini meet at his home (This very same evening) for others to bring their displays to be calibrated by Gregg. Not only that but at HALF PRICE!
All I can say is that you folks missed a great opportunity.
twaller 05-30-05, 09:56 AM Does anyone know what WLNS's plans are after the analog shutoff? They cannot stay at 59 (out of core), I don't think they want 6 (low vhf). I saw a report from the FCC which did not indicate a channel choice. All other Lansing stations are indicated. WSYM will be at 38, WILX will be at 10, WKAR will be at 23.
They could be waiting to see what frequency will be available after the first round is done.
I was considering a UHF only antenna, but it may not be best in the long run.

As you know, WLNS can not use 59 as it is out of the core. Channel 6 as a low band VHF would have problems from man-made interference, including those pesky FM non-comm stations, and natural interference. I believe that WLNS chose the "let the FCC pick a new channel" option. A possible channel, since WSYM picked 38, 47 likely becomes available in this market. Ultimately, the channel selection will depend on what is going on within 200 miles or more of Lansing, including the Canadian allocations.

Anyone having (new) problems with WILX? It's always been rock solid for me, even when many closer where having problems. The last few days I've been getting lots of break-ups. My signal reading is a bit lower than it has been, but not substantially (mid 60's now vs. 75-80 in the past --on HD TiVo).

I really don't watch too much WILX, but the problem I have with them is the audio. A static like sound comes in and out. I noticed it during the Kentucky Derby, and then I noticed it the other night when I tuned in, so it's been going on for a while.
I didn't notice any video break-ups.

On June 15, the Jackson Citizen Patriot published the official press release regarding HDTV in Jackson. Text is below:
High-definition television, which brings the promise of higher quality images on the screen, is available in Jackson beginning today.
Comcast Cable, a division of Comcast Corp., announced Tuesday that Comcast HDTV programming is now available in the Jackson area, including Brooklyn, Cement City, Onsted and Columbia, Leoni, Liberty, Napoleon, Rives Junction, Sandstone, Spring Arbor and Summit townships.
HDTV can be viewed over a number of channels, including digital channels 202 (ESPN HD), 204 (TNT HD) 205 (Discovery HD) and such "Premium Channels" as 215/300 (HBO HD) and 219/319 (Cinemax HD).
"It's just another way of reaching out with more options for customers," said Comcast spokeswoman Christine Ervin. "HDTV is coming on strong and we want to make sure customers have access."
Ervin said customers must have HDTV compatible equipment, including a receiver box that is rented for $5 a month, which provides access to channels WILX and WKAR.
A "Digital Classic" package -- at an additional $10.95 per month -- adds additional channels.
Marketing Coordinator Meghan Martin said customers can custom design their HDTV package by selecting the tier of service they want.
In a company statement, Larry Williamson, Comcast's area vice president in Grand Rapids, said the company has invested more than $1 billion in new infrastructure since 1996. That's made it possible to launch such services as HDTV and other technologies, such as Digital Video Recorder.
To subscribe, or for further information, call (888) COMCAST or visit the company's Web site at www.comcast.com.

thelaker 06-28-05, 08:29 PM It seems that over the past couple of weeks, WSYM-DT has been on and off the air at intermittent intervals. WHTV has a construction permit to install a 4kW (ERP) station in Jackson, Michigan at a height of 173 feet, which has a predicted coverage area radius of 20 miles (48dBu) or 25 miles (41dBu)
Predicted coverage area map is at:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=DT421953.html
The construction permit expires September 15, 2005.
I also had heard that they do plan to be on the air in August, however, they will only be broadcasting in standard definition. The audio/video source for the signal is expected to be the off-air pickup of the analog channel 18 from Rives Junction.
WHTV's application for 130kW from Rives Junction remains on file with the FCC and is apparently awaiting approval from Canada.
masterdeals 07-23-05, 04:10 PM That coverage area for UPN of ch.34 is very disappointing.

Thank you.

sawmill 07-25-05, 11:11 AM I am very frequent viewer of the WKAR HD channel. From my projector even the SD programs look much better on the HD channel. Would be great if they could cut costs elsewhere.
William M. 07-25-05, 11:56 AM Hi garybliev,
I watch PBS HD quite frequently.
It is also a shame PBS is going to charge WKAR a higher price.
Are the higher charges a result of less federal funding for public television and PBS is just passing along the costs?
I will have to become an annual WKAR TV member to try to help out.

smithb39 07-25-05, 01:01 PM I watch PBS HD more than I thought I would. As I scroll through stations I always stop to see what is on in HD. I watch about an hour each evening and a couple on the weekends. When I'm showing off the television I always try PBS first.

I watch the station all the time. There is some excellent program in HD such as "History Detectives" and "Secrets of the Dead". Please keep broadcasting.
