dlnester 04-28-06, 03:44 PM If you are going to switch to Dish Network and the 622 VIP box, I would do it soon. Echostar lost the Tivo patent case and it *could* have some affect on the availability of that product.
I've been a Dish customer since 1997 and I've been very pleased. I don't have an HD box yet from them, but give me time!
bongohawk 04-28-06, 04:40 PM I am probably going to switch in June, and regards to TIVO patent, I am pretty sure Dish (Echostar) is going to appeal it.
Farlaugh 04-28-06, 05:49 PM I had everest when I lived in Lenexa. It is what I miss most about moving:(
There is no better service available.
I am a PC gamer as well and the pings I recieved were always in the 20's or lower. Never had digital artifacts on my screen when watching TV and the rates are $30+ less a month.
Everest, please make it up north!!!!!!!!! 1-29 and Barry is begging for you!

I wouldn't worry about this from an availability standpoint. What it might affect is that the DVR fee may go up as they start having to pay Tivo licensing fees. Stay tuned.
BTW, I love my 622! Head and shoulders above the 921 I traded in. Some have had issues with it, but mine has been 99% trouble-free. It's been awhile since the last software update, so I'm pretty confident they're going to fix several minor problems with the next download. Hopefully, they won't create several new ones!

Farlaugh 05-02-06, 11:51 AM So are you guys saying that TWC customers are going to be under Comcast soon?
rrostie 05-02-06, 12:25 PM Yes, we have known about the Comcast thing for a while.
I came in here to ask about what was the best DVR solution. I currently just have OTA HDTV and I miss having the Time Warner DVR, but I don't miss how much I paid for cable.
Since DirectTV is droping Tivo and hasn't come out with their own HD DVR, is the VIP 622 the best solution right now.

I have the 250 GB sony HD-DVR DHG-HDD250. It works great and relies on TVGuide to get the program guide. While I have heard that it is not as robust a solution as Tivo, the quality of the recordings are superb. You can't tell it from a live HD show. It has component and HDMI output, it has built-in NTSC and ATSC tuners. It has QAM tuner. It even has a cable card slot for encrypted cable channels. I use it with OTA only and works great. I don't think I will be able to watch my new favorite shows 24 and House without a DVR since my daughter (3 year old) doesn't get to bed until about 8:30 PM.
Unfortunately, Sony has discontinued this product. I bought mine from Best Buy in November 2005 for $500. No monthly fees for DVR. Great!!
You could try ebay and see if anyone is selling.
I have been resisting getting cable/satellite since there isn't anything that good (especially in HD) in those channels. We have a subscription to netflix and that takes care of our appetite for movies. The OTA HD-DVR takes care of all the network HD show we love (24, House, CSI, etc).
KC-Technerd 05-02-06, 08:03 PM I wish Sony had a DVR that worked with DirecTV, or one integrated with a satellite receiver.

The R5000-HD (http://www.nextcomwireless.com/r5000/home.htm) sounds interesting. (I don't know how I can use it though.) I love the TitanTV listings.
Here is the forum thread about it

Maybe I'll be a DLP tv or something and build a HTPC, though the DHG-HDD250 would probably be cheaper.
I don't really miss all the channels I had with cable anyway, so a standalone solution would make more sence.
hdtimmy 05-04-06, 02:06 AM I am OTA only and have the Sony DHG-HDD250 and an older LG LST-3410A.
I absolutely love them both. They sure came in handy when LOST and Veronica Mars were on at the same time.
I second the check out eBay statement.
profmrw 05-05-06, 01:56 PM Has anyone seen the HD feeds from Kansas City yet on DirecTV? I am waiting on the MPEG4 HD-DVR to come out before doing any switch on my TIVO-HD box but was seeing if anyone else has seen the feeds.

Etherscreen 05-05-06, 09:02 PM I am moving to Overland Park in July and was wondering what he consensus is on HD service in this area. I am currently a DTV customer but not sure if I will stick with them as their box is pretty expensive. Would the other services allow me to get the NFL package and sporting packages?

NFL Sunday Ticket is exclusive to DirecTV.
As far as HD services, I would check into Everest Connections http://www.everestkc.com or check out Dish Network, which provides the KC "Big 4" in HD via Satellite.
Etherscreen 05-06-06, 11:01 AM Is there anywhere that I can find a comparison chart between Everest, DTV and Dish?
Thanks
Etherscreen 05-06-06, 11:17 AM Does Everest provide a DVR and are they compatible with Tivo?
dlnester 05-06-06, 11:37 AM Yes, Everest has a HD DVR that can record 2 different channels at once. Rental is about $13/month however...
I used to have Tivo and it worked just fine with Everest until my IR port broke and it could no longer control the Everest cable box.
dlnester 05-06-06, 08:16 PM The Kansas City Brigade is on FOX Sports Net Midwest right now, but Everest is showing Poker... Tech Support couldn't tell me anything.... GRRR!
Update: The game wasn't on any of the RSN's on DirecTV either... so I don't blame Everest for this.
Etherscreen 05-08-06, 07:01 PM I will have a 100" screen with a front projector and I am wondering will DTV, Dish and Everest all work fine for this big of a screen. I have heard that D*might not be the best choice due to HDlite. Does anyone have experience with a front projector and what I can expect with picture quality with each of these providers?

I don't know which would be best. As far as I know, all of them do some additional compression on HD in order to conserve bandwidth. I heard on one of the industry insider shows that they are doing this with the idea that most people have 40" sets or less, and on sets that small it's difficult to detect the compression artifacts. I have a 70" and D*TV. Sometimes it looks really great, and on film based material, it usually does look pretty good. Usually the only time the bad stuff shows up is when there's alot of complex movement from frame to frame... such as a detailed explosion.
What will really show off your system (I'm assuming it supports 1080x1920 resolution) is Blu-ray, HD-DVD, or D-Theater DVHS if you can still get ahold of one of these.

On my D* HDTivo I can go the SD local channel by simply typing the channel number and enter. If I want the HD channel, I can type that channel number as well (4-1, 5-1, 19-2, etc). Maybe it's different on different boxes, but I personally have had no problems.

Congratulations - you'll love your setup. I have a similar setup - 106" screen with a LCD front projector (Studio Experience 20HD), and it's great. You're definately going to want HD for a screen that size... you'll quickly discover that SD programming at that size is watchable, but not very compelling. HD was made for large screens - period.
I have D* and I don't have any complaints (though others seem to! ). One thing to remember is that on D*, your locals are currently recieved OTA and not over the satellite, so there is no extra compression there (but you do need some sort of antenna). The satellite based HD signals are compressed, and at times (though very very rarely) you can see some compression artifacts. I've only ever noticed it on sporting events, when there is a lot of onscreen movement (say a basketball game when the camera pans quickly). It doesn't seem to happen all the time, and the effect is not very large (despite what some threads claim). But if you're looking closely you can see it.
The big question with D* is what the future will bring when they switch over to MPEG-4. I have a buddy in the SF Bay area who has one of the new D* DVR's with locals over satellite. I've not seen it in person, but he claims that the picture is great.
My 2-cents: Enjoy your theater. Just about any HD carrier will provide you an astounding picture. Go for convenience... if you have cable already and like the service then you might want to stay with it. If you have D* or Dish, give them a shot.
The PS3's and other Blu-Ray players are 1080p out of the box both by component and HDMI outputs. No word on whether or not they will downrez the component outputs to the rumored 540i or not. That's why my next HDTV purchase this summer will be the new Samsung HL-S6188W (DLP) with CableCard and 1080p HDMI/component inputs.
wschwart 05-10-06, 12:03 AM There were a lot of pixelization problems on last night's 24 as well as the end of Jay Leno. I hsve Comcsast and am wondering if this is a cable problem, network problem or local stations problem. Did anyone using OTA have the same problem?

Is your buddy a beta tester? Because DirecTV (D*) has not released the MPEG4 DVR that would be necessary to RECORD HD Locals via satellite, and it sounds like it will be sometime in the 2nd half of this year. Maybe he has an H20 to RECEIVE HD Locals from D* (like KChdtvguy) but also has the HR10 for recording other HD?? If he truly has an HR20-250, there are thousands waiting to hear about it!!!
Dishnetwork has the 622(?) that can record HD locals from the E* bird.
KSBugeater 05-10-06, 10:29 AM I live 67 miles away and can receive all KC DT stations except 41.1, which I get about 30% of the time, and 62.1, which I've pulled in maybe once in about 9 months with my CM 4228 and DirecTivo HR10-250. Last night, I was able to lock onto 62.1 at 11:30PM. Did KSMO-DT boost their power or was it very favorable conditions? Maybe my gain was Walt's loss?
Oops, Walt had problems Monday night, not Tuesday.

I have a Sony HD-DVR DHG-HDD250 and I use it to timeshift "24" and other shows. I watched "24" late on Monday night and had no problems. I use OTA with a Winegard Sensar III antenna. Must have been a cable problem!
Etherscreen 05-10-06, 06:35 PM I looked on D* and they seem to offer locals in Overland Park. Is this true?
profmrw 05-10-06, 07:25 PM I live in Grain Valley and I can let all of the local HD's except NBC 41.1 - it sometimes come in but more times it doesn't. This will stink when Sunday night football goes to NBC this fall and I don't have HD

Yes, both D* and E* offer HD locals in Kansas City (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX only). :)
Brad
WILDCAT NATION 05-11-06, 02:44 PM But you have to have the 5 LNB dish and new receiver to get the locals in HD, correct?
Bradtothebone 05-11-06, 06:19 PM But you have to have the 5 LNB dish and new receiver to get the locals in HD, correct?
I think that's true for D*. For E* you need a dish pointed at 129 (either a second dish or a new Dish 1000 3-LNB). You also need an MPEG-4 box, which can either be a single tuner plus OTA VIP211 or a dual-tuner plus OTA VIP622 DVR. The 622 rocks, BTW, as you can record THREE HD network shows at once (one OTA, two satellite) if you want. :D

What kind of antenna do you have? I live in Lee's Summit which is closer to the towers but I am just using a small antenna. I was able to get 41-1 even with an indoor antenna. I am pretty sure with the correct antenna, you should be able to pickup all channels.

You are correct... he doesn't have the D* HD DVR... just the receiver (my misunderstanding). Still... the claim is that HD Locals over satellite has very good quality.
ddingle 05-13-06, 12:19 AM Say we are from out of state working on a home in Leawood. Our customer picked up two Scientific Atlanta 8000 DVRs from Time Warner off of 119th st. We have had pretty bad experiences with the 8000. Does TW offer the 8300? It is much better in our opinion. Thanks Dallas

I have an old Voom satellite receiver that I use to watch local OTA digital broadcasts. When I tune to 19.1 KCPT-DT my box will immediately reset/reboot. I can watch 19.2, 19.3, 19.4 just fine however, along with every other local digital channel (except 62.1)
Any ideas what might be causing this? I've re-scanned channels several times, but 19.1 will always reset my box.

I just check for KCPT19 (DT-18) and I am receiving both 19.1 and 19.2 fine right now via Over-the-Air. It's good to see KCPT DT-18 back on the air. The SD and HD looked much better to my eyes. Still hoping to see multicasting go away on KCPT and return to the glory days of full-bandwidth one channel 1080i PBS broadcasting.
squeak49 05-15-06, 06:27 PM If anyone has the NHL Center Ice package through TWC, Comcast, or Everest, please PM me. And don't worry - I don't want to freeload, I just have a question for you. I'm a CI sub myself.

No kidding!! I'm on 119th just inside Olathe city limits, just a block or two from Pflumm where their service area apparently starts. It drives me nuts knowing just down the street they're probably paying half what I am for Comcast.
I'm not necessarily complaining about what I have... I'm not a rabid Comcast hater. But it sure would be nice to have some choice in the matter!

I'm not an Everest sub, but I think it's a combo of all you said. They were an integrated (phone, Internet, cable) carrier far before anyone else, and have great customer loyalty. Apparently, they have great customer service. If nothing else, they're competition for the companies that were in place before deregulation, at a VERY competitive price. I know for a fact that I pay far lower prices to TWC because I'm in a territory that Everest serves. On an HD front, they already appear to have the best offerings in terms of # of channels available, and their hands aren't as tied as Comcast and TWC for quick carriage of new HD channels. They've adopted NFL Network HD, ESPN2HD, and National Geographic HD quickly. They appear to be very aggressive in differentiating themselves from the competition to steal customers, where they can.
Psyclguy 05-19-06, 07:28 PM Just noticed a new digital channel, 41-2, call letters KSHB-WX+. Nothing is being broadcast yet.

With the call letters ending in WX+, it will probably NBC's WeatherPlus channel.

I also noticed this last night and I called KSHB to ask some questions. Yes 41.2 is a weather channel. I understand that 41.1 is 15mbs and will stay that way. KSHB engineering does read this forum so please post your thoughts here at the local KC HDTV forum.
My wife watches the local weather at 6am, 6pm and 9/10pm daily. I just have a hard time understanding why we need a 24 hour fuzzy side SD channel to repeat what is on the local channels already. If my wife can just peek at a 24 hour weather channel once in awhile she might just give up watching the local newscast at 6am, 6pm and 9/10pm. Why do stations want to lose viewers this way?
wschwart 05-20-06, 12:40 AM The NBC station n St. Louis does the same thing as KSHB with at least one other subchannel. Needless to say the local St. Louis HDTV crowd does not appreciate this 'wonderful' service. It must be something dictated by the network.
dlnester 05-20-06, 08:09 AM Here is a demo of another station which has Weather Plus that you can watch online.

Service on par with BMW, Prices that are 30% less than the competition, extremely fast internet service. Don't let the 5MB fool ya. When I was lucky enough to have them, I was getting a constant 8MB. TW claims I get 8 but I'm lucky to get 5. Ironic eh? Latency is another issue if you have gamers in the house. Everest has the smartest routing and some very fast switching as my pings were 20% less than I have now with TWC. Also picture quality. I never recieved any digital artifacting or disturbance. I did not have HD so I can't answer that. I had a billing question nd didnt even have to hold. I had an outage once and they explained what happened and fixed it right away.

One of the side problems with multicasting is the damage multicasting inflicts on the main HD channel. Hopefully during primetime programming and NFL football KSHB allows full bandwidth to the HD channel.
CycloneMike 05-23-06, 02:04 AM A little bit off topic - but here goes - I was all set to watch the final 2-hour episode of 24 tonight..... but the hard drive on my TWC 8300HD DVR crashed and now I have nothing.
8@#$*& is all I have to say. Anybody know how to find out if Fox is going to replay the finale? I'll bring over the pizza and drinks if anybody has it recorded in HD and can hold on to it until I get a chance to come on over a view it!
I am taking the HDDVR back to TWC tomorrow to get a new one. I can complain, but it is not the fault of the people behind the desk. I have heard that due to the heat that these things generate that eventually they all seem to crash and die after a while - just BAD timing!
Mike
nerual96 05-23-06, 10:50 AM Cyclone, I feel your pain. Maybe this is off topic and not the proper forum, but the SA 8300 has been a POS. I've replaced my box 4 times since they came out. Software is buggy, especially compared to the previous SD box. I've had many recordings that have been missed or chopped off. There is no rhyme or reason. TW doesn't seem to care either. When the VCR, a 30 year old technology, has better reliability than this thing, something is seriously wrong.
Sorry for the rant, but I feel a little better getting that off my chest.
Unfortunately, Fox doesn't allow you to download shows online. I had to do that with Survivor several times this season. If it's any consolation, you can usually get a significant discount off your following months bill when you exchange your box.

Mike,
I recorded & watched it last night. I'd be happy to share, but I leave town for a week starting tomorrow. Don't know if you could wait, but I wanted to put that out there. Also, I'm a little short of DVR space, so I'm not sure it'll be around by the time I get back on 6/1. I'm going to try to watch Alias tonight, which should free up 2 hours of HD space.
Let me know if you still need to watch it by then. I know I'd have a hard time waiting that long to see the season finale!
Cyclone - I feel your pain too. I made sure my Sony HD-DVR recorded 24 properly. Made sure the schedule was still there Monday morning before going to work. I get Fox and all local channels OTA and record it in HD. I watched it last night and unfortunately, I deleted the two hour episode after watching it. So, I cannot help!!
However, I was told that iTunes sells the 24 episodes now for $1.99 each. It is only 320x240 but something is better than nothing.

Psyclguy 05-24-06, 08:51 PM Something's screwed up with their audio. It's OK during actual programming, but when they go to commercials the center channel comes through only on my sub. No front or rear channels. This happens when I view OTA or through satellite. It's really irritating.
jeffdbs 05-24-06, 10:17 PM I noticed new channels on Over-the-Air digital reception. 027-05 East and 027-06 Mntn. Looks like WDAF DT-34 is now multicasting. I do not get any signal on DT-27 so it must be DT-34 multicasting. Anybody else seeing this?
dlnester 05-24-06, 10:28 PM KSHB-DT 41.2 is gone (WX+)
I just added them myself. I'm guessing FOX is going to have an SD re-broadcast of an East coast time, and a 1 hour delay on programming for West Coast.
As for using 27-5 and 27-6... are they working with KSNT in Topeka? I think they will be using 27-1 and 27-2 here soon. (KSNT-DT 27.2 will be CW Network Programming)
KSNT-DT is on RF channel 28.
WIBW-DT is on RF channel 44
KTWU-DT is on RF channel 23
KTKA-DT is on RF channel 48 (I believe will be first with HD local news, since they already have the studio camera's for it, their studio is digital ready, and their HDTV upgrades are in progress at their tower. See Topeka market thread)

Oh no now WDAF has gone to the dark side with multicasting. My family and I noticed the HD quality was way down tonight on "American Idol". So I went and did a re-scan to see why WDAF DT-34 HD picture quality had drop so much tonight. Sure enough multicasting has shown it's ugly side-effects again by hurting the picture quality of WDAF HD. There goes FOX NFL Football HD quality. :(

I have recently got the new TW DVR. Two Firewire ports on the back, one USB in the front.
Anyone know of a way to transfer the files of the HDD to another PC?

LiveLite 05-27-06, 10:30 PM I understand the bandwith limitation when broadcasting OTA, but is there a way that the local stations can pass their video signals to the cable companies without the multicasting cutting down the data rate? I know that most cable companies receive their local HD signals via an antenna, so that signal is compromised. If the method used were optical cable, the data rate would not have to suffer. This would allow the cable operators to provide a full rate HD video stream of the local stations on all video streams. I would prefer to receive the local stations OTA, but with all of them starting to multicast, the cable option would get rid of the pixelating effect.
I watched Will & Grace this past week on KSHB. When Will got up out of the chair he was sitting, on it looked like he was going to "beam up". His fast moving body pixelated while the rest of the scene was very clear. The Stanley Cup on NBC will look horrible. Instead of the 'glow puck' that FOX used years ago to make the puck move visible to the fans, multicasting will make the fast moving puck 'disappear'.

What about us poor Missourians? Why would the state legislatures bar competition?
bongohawk 05-28-06, 01:29 AM What about us poor Missourians? Why would the state legislatures bar competition?
"A similar bill was considered in the Missouri General Assembly this year but didn’t pass."
That quote is from the article. I guess talk to your state representative and have them pass this bill.
My guess would be that the Missouri political machine is in bed with big business. (Think: Blunt family)
EricM407 05-29-06, 09:14 AM What about us poor Missourians? Why would the state legislatures bar competition?
I don't think the state legislature has barred competition. Everest has been in some areas of KCMO competing with TW for several years. I think the bill they're talking about was to eliminate local franchise requirements. ATT would rather deal with the regulators at one state agency than dozens of individual cities.

dlnester 05-30-06, 10:09 PM Just thinking here.... but:
Would it have made more sense for KSHB to put Weather Plus on KMCI-DT instead of KSHB-DT? KMCI currently has zero HDTV programming, but KSHB does. It wouldn't really matter picture wise if KMCI-DT was multicasting, but would on KSHB-DT. Anybody else agree?

I haven't compared the locals with D*, but I did do a side-by-side on a non-HD channel with Comcast's picture. Clearly, Comcast has the better picture. Because of how I have the Comcast HD box and the D* box connected to my HDTV, I am not able to perform a side-by-side comparison of the HD picture.

dlnester 05-31-06, 12:16 PM Are you getting those two stations from Westmoreland?
No, I live in Lenexa right now and get it OTA. My parents now live in Westmoreland and I have them setup as well, and sometimes I'm on the Topeka board on here as well and wanted to get both locations in my profile.
dlnester 06-03-06, 12:43 PM Well I finally took the HDTV plunge this week. I financed a new 30" Samsung Widescreen (TX-S3082WH) for $740 over the next 24 months at NFM. I added the Everest HDTV package without a DVR (Couldn't justify the $14/month for it) and I must say it is worth every penny so far.
Before I had a Voom Satellite Receiver which I used to down-convert the local DT signals into letterbox on my SD TV. Now I'm hungry for more HDTV content to be added to Everest!
Hi all. I'm new to this so forgive any dumb questions. I bought a 32 inch samsung LCD w/built in tuner about 8 weeks ago, and recently exchanged it for a 40 inch equivalent. Prior to this, all TVs in the house were standard. I've been with Dish for 3+ years and no complaints.
When I bought the new TV, Dish said it would take about 2 months to get the 622 receiver, so I signed up for Comcast in the meantime and got their HD DVR. Even thought the built-in tuner works fine, we watch everything off of DVR, so in order to use my new HD set, a DVR was critical. Weeks passed, everything looked great, then Dish came out. They hooked me up, I called to cancel Comcast. The next week, I noticed poor quality on the Dish locals. The images are splotchy, a little ghosting, sound pops/skips, images skips. These don't always occur all at once, but some/all of them are always present on the locals. When I flip back and forth on the inputs from Dish to OTA, OTA looks great, but Dish has the problem, so the local broadcast seems ok. When I run the OTA through the 622, that also seems to foul up the picture. All that leads me to think the TV is just fine. I've tried different cables, both HDMI inputs, and component, and nothing seems to help. Dish sent a second 622 and it didn't help.
After 2 weeks of trying to fix, I'm starting to question my judgement and am now wondering if the OTA signal actually looks bad, too (i.e., I'm starting to question the TV now).
Sorry for the long post, but does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Am I just being to picky? The best way to describe the image when it's at its worst is that it's like I'm watching it on a laptop screen. When watching Letterman, when he stands still, the stripes on his suit look fine, but when he moves, the light stripes get washed out in the dark color of the suit. On shows like CSI, quick moving faces leave a ghost image.
Maybe Dish is still working out how to push the locals through? Any thoughts?
Thanks!!
I have the Dish 622. Just to be clear, SD locals from the 622 are in the 8000 channel range. HD locals are in the 6000 range.
I don't have any of the issues you're describing. However, the OTA HD locals are a bit better than the DishNetwork delivered HD locals.
Thanks, Steve. Yes, I'm avoiding the 8000 series and using the 6000 series channels. Also of note - the "004-0 (Fox)", "005-0 (cbs)", etc channels at the bottom of the guide are now also HD.
What kind of TV do you have? Mine is LCD...wondering if there is something characteristic to LCD that doesn't work right with the 622? Supposedly one of the local field service managers (was out at my house yesterday) is going to check his sources in tech support...but I'm not hopeful.

I have a Hitachi CRT RPTV, an Infocus X1 DLP projector, and a Toshiba MT700 DLP projector. All work fine with my 622.
One thing I noticed is that when I scanned in the HD OTA locals I was at first still mistakenly selecting the Dish HD locals because of how they were labeled. You may want to double check that.
Now that I think of it WDAF does give me some problems with the DISH HD local feed, but the OTA is fine.

So it looks like Scripps Howard wants to move KMCI to Channel 41, and put KSHB on Channel 42 for digital signals in Kansas City. When I was talking about Weather Plus in an earlier post, they could map both stations to 41-X and really multicast while keeping the HD signal on NBC at full bandwidth.

Steve - Thanks. I wonder if you could check out Letterman on Monday night on the 6300 channel through Dish? Watch the suit jacket and see if it looks funny/washes out, etc. when he moves. Let me know if you have a chance. I plan to flip back and forth between straight OTA input and the 622. I'm not looking for an identical picture quality, but the 622 today for me is not even acceptable. Hate to go back to Comcast, but I'm not sure what else to try!
Thanks!
I am trying to help a friend find someone to service his RPTV (Samsung TV, lives in Blue Springs). He called around, but had trouble finding anyone who works on Samsung RPTV's.
Specifically, anything on the HD component input is shifted to the right 2"-3". Not sure if that is a problem that needs a tech, or if there could be a service menu option to get it realigned.
DroptheRemote 06-05-06, 11:20 AM Two to three inches could be beyond what can be addressed through the service menu, but there is a service menu setting on most Samsung TVs for this. Do you know if this is a DLP, CRT or some other display type?
I can't pass on service menu information online, but feel free to have your friend contact me by phone and I may be able to point him in the direction of a solution.

I have a 622 that I'm using with a RP CRT (Hitachi) over component. The OTA from the 622 tuner looks great, but the E* HD locals have the well-known issues of video pixelization and audio stuttering/lip sync problems. There are really two problems with E* locals. 1: They come from the 129 satellite, which is an old, weak bird, and 2: The MPEG-4 encoders they are using are still in the early stage of development, and need tweaking (desperately!).
You may want to experiment with different output settings on the 622 (e.g. 720p vs. 1080i). In some cases a given TV will do better with one or the other, even if its native resolution (probably 720p in your case) is different than the 622 output. In other words, the TV scaler may work better than the 622's scaler.
The other thing you MAY want to do is go into "menu-local channels-satellite locals" and change the mapdown to "Standard-definition Only." This will cause the xx-0 channels to go away in your "all HD" guide. In my case, these channels were causing me to miss DVR'd programs on OTA channels (timers were deleting themselves overnight). Doing the above solved my problem, but it didn't for everyone who tried this, so YMMV. Have fun, and welcome to the wacky world of HDTV!

Let's hope they use the 41/42 allocation to use a single antenna, hopefully top mounted on their tower, without a directional pattern and a move to a full megawatt of power for each station. Right now, channel 19 with just 55 KW of power vastly outperforms 41 out here in the fringe area of Missouri.
dlnester 06-05-06, 05:51 PM Here in Lenexa near 95th & I-435 KCPT-DT is the 2nd hardest channel to pull in for me. KCMO-DT is non-existant here. I get KSHB-DT and KMCI-DT pretty strong here.

Brad-Thanks! Do you know if they have any plans to change the sattelite and/or get the software fixed fof MPEG-4? The weird thing is that when I pull it OTA, it has the same symptoms, but maybe to a lesser degree. However, I've lost all objectivity and can't tell for sure if there is any difference! I'm beginning to suspect the TV. Thanks...

squeak49 06-06-06, 11:17 AM Did any other TWC customers lose service last night (I'm near 95th & Nall)? It was after the storm, a little before 10:00, with under a minute left in the hockey game. Yes, I missed the game-winning goal. And Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan in HD. So sad. Service was still down at 12:30 last night. I didn't check this morning.
Update: 11:30 am - service is back. Too little, too late.
Bradtothebone 06-06-06, 06:14 PM Brad-Thanks! Do you know if they have any plans to change the sattelite and/or get the software fixed fof MPEG-4?
The MPEG-4 should only get better with time. I understand it's an encoder issue, not a decoder (receiver issue). The satellite is another story. There is speculation that the new Echostar 11 might be parked there, at least temporarily, in early 2007. I think there is supposed to be a new Canadian satellite launched to that location later, and E* has leased space on it. I had to cut several large branches out of trees to get 129, and the best I can do (on a clear day) is about 75 signal strength or so. It was unreceivable during last night's storm, and even after the storm passed, the clouds were thick enough to drop the signal down to 45-50, which wouldn't lock for any appreciable time.

I just called D* to order locals in HD and they said not available until the end of the year. What gives? I live on the MO side, S of Belton.
Only reason I agree to pay for HD Locals is because I can't get Ch. 9 here, I get 4,5,19,41 etc. I guess 9 being VHF makes it harder to get out here. I have a great antenna, 40' up.

The Kansas City HD Locals are coming off the Spaceway 2 satellite at 99* West. Maybe the CSR you talked to was saying with your current equipment you couldn't get local HD content, but you would think DirecTV would be trying to sell you more equipment if you needed it. I was looking on www.dbstalk.com and it says you might need to have a H10 line of receiver to get local HD.
4/19/2006 4:33:00 PMDirecTV Inc. launched local HD programming in eight new markets Wednesday.
Subscribers with the appropriate HD-receiving equipment who subscribe to a DirecTV programming package that includes local channels will receive both the standard-definition and HD signals at no extra monthly charge.
The direct-broadcast satellite provider’s new local HD markets are: Minneapolis; Sacramento and San Diego, Calif.; Pittsburgh; Nashville, Tenn.; Kansas City, Mo.; Columbus, Ohio; and Birmingham, Ala.

Oh man. I had to replace my digital cable box yesterday. They talked me into upgrading to HD-DVR (Time Warner). The box they gave me is the SA 8000HD. Two things really irritating: grey bars on the side in SD channels, and major pixelating and sort of skipping. I know I read some posts about this thing, but while I am reading back through 122 pages I thought I would see if anyone can confirm if these two problems are infact problems with this model. I am seriously about ready to return it.
KC-Technerd 06-06-06, 11:27 PM Getting 41.1 just fine. 41.2 is showing no signal.
dlnester 06-06-06, 11:31 PM If the 8000HD is like the rest of the boxes, do this:
1. Press the "Settings" button TWICE on the remote, it takes you to the General Settings menu. Scroll down until you see "Set: TV Borders" and select "Dark" which will make them black.
2. If a program is boxed, and you want to stretch the screen, press "Settings" once and scroll up until you can change the "Picture Size"
As for KSHB-DT, I'm getting it fine with Everest Cable, which gets it OTA. I just checked it with my antenna, and I'm getting it OTA just fine on my DTV tuner.

bphisig 06-08-06, 08:14 AM To the SA-8000 guy...get the 8300. I've had the new version and never had any problems with it.
Regarding the picture settings of the box, I set it to TV type: 16:9 and stretch the 4:3 programming. The key is that on my TV, I lock it on to 16:9 picture at all times. If I let my TV do its own thing, it will adjust the signal automatically and cut of the edges of my 4:3 programming. But with it set on 16:9 full time, I've had no such issue.

two934s 06-10-06, 09:05 AM The 8am world cup game -- england vs. paraguay on ABC is supposed to be in HD but it is coming across as SD -- perhaps there is nobody in at KMBC to flip the switch this morning? Very disappointing!!
two934s 06-10-06, 10:06 AM HD was corrected 15 minutes into the game -- not sure if it was KMBC or the ABC national feed. At least it was corrected!!
LiveLite 06-10-06, 09:03 PM Thanks for turning off the 2nd video channel/stream during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The broadcast OTA picture is bee-you-tee-full!
I hope you can do this for Sunday Night Football also.
dlnester 06-10-06, 09:08 PM I wouldn't get used to it. Once Weather Plus goes LIVE on Monday, I don't imagine it will ever go off.
jeffdbs 06-10-06, 09:17 PM Yes it is nice KSHB turned 41.2 off to give 41.1 less trouble. But the NBC feed has got to be the worst picture quality HDTV hockey game I have watched in my life. Colors are washed out, macroblocking and a camera crew who can not hold a focus. If this is what we have to look forward to on NBC HDTV NFL football we all are in trouble.
Beckles 06-12-06, 04:20 PM I picked up a Westinghouse 42" at Best Buy on Saturday and went down to swap my cable box with TW to get an HD-DVR but they didn't have any boxes with HDMI, they said I should come back and try and get one ... is that the SA 8300HD then, the one with HDMI?
bladesfan1972 06-12-06, 05:27 PM Comcast added ESPN2 HD, but it's completely unwatchable. The pixelation and drop outs were so bad that I tuned to the SD channel instead. What's the problem, and more importantly, what does it take to fix it?
bongohawk 06-12-06, 05:41 PM I was watching the USA game earlier today and I noticed no pixelation on my Comcast feed in Olathe.
bphisig 06-12-06, 05:44 PM ESPN2HD at the in-law's house looked great yesterday.
I don't think the SA-8300 supports HDMI or DVI. Correct me if I'm wrong. Or check out the HDTV Recorder forum.
dlnester 06-12-06, 05:50 PM My SA Explorer 3250HD box supports DVI (not a recorder) so I would imagine the SA-8300 would as well.

I've been watching most of the World Cup games on ESPN2HD and have no complaints. No pixelation, no drop outs. Are you still seeing this problem?
bladesfan1972 06-12-06, 08:23 PM Haven't checked it today, but it was terrible as late as yesterday evening, I'll have to check again tonight. Needless to say, I was stoked about getting a new channel, but disappointed with the technical difficulties. I'll try again tonight and post a reply, anyone else in Blue Springs having a problem with it?
jeffdbs 06-12-06, 11:21 PM Looks like KSHB move to multicasting is causing the main HD channel to freeze up.

bladesfan1972 06-12-06, 11:47 PM The deuce HD looked good tonight, just in time to watch the broadcast of the US getting spanked by the Chechs . . .
mitchell witmer 06-13-06, 08:55 AM Hello, my hdtv will not pick up 18 ?
LiveLite 06-13-06, 10:05 AM The HD broadcast Game 4 of the Stanley Cup was compromised with momentary macro blocking. I did not get any frozen pictures, just momentary blocks around fast moving objects. The 2nd video feed is a waste of time. When the weather is as perfect as it was last night, you don't need a weather channel. I think that a 2nd video feed would be perfect during severe weather. This will allow the main program (although compromised PQ) to continue uninterrupted, while severe weather allerts could be broadcast.
The PQ of Game 3 on Saturday was much better without the 2nd video stream.
Note to mitchell witmer: Rescan - I had to input 18 manually. They are showing 5 video streams. Four are active, while the 5th is blank, so far.

The SA8300HD does have HDMI output. I'm actually using an HDMI-to-DVI cable with my older Toshiba RPTV.

I totally agree. I already have dozens of ways to get the current weather and what little value is added by these subchannels certainly isn't enough to justify the impact on PQ. All of these subchannels are diving me nuts. Why bother getting HDTV if it means tons of macroblocking, mediocre resolution, and redundant, near worthless content on sub-channels? Show of hands - has anyone here actually found a sub-channel useful?
When I first bought my HDTV a few years ago, I watched PBSHD all the time. The picture was amazing and I enjoyed the content. Now, with the plague of multiple sub-channels, the picture is so poor it's laughable. SD channels on my SD CRT look far better, so I haven't watched PBS in over a year. Quality over quantity please.
dlnester 06-13-06, 05:04 PM 5 Sub-Stations on PBS? What are they thinking over there? When they do present something in "HD" on the main 19.1 station, it is just a zoom to fill the screen of whatever 19.2 is broadcasting..

This is a nightmare for HDTV quality. These fuzzy low quality 4X3 multicasting channels look terrible on a 16X9 television. What little bandwidth is leftover is not enough for the HDTV primetime programming. :(

I would say yes a preamp may help your signal strength on the weak broadcasters.

hdtimmy 06-15-06, 01:35 AM KSMO-DT 47 (WB62) should be full power on or around July 1st. They are required to go to full licensed power on July 1st by the FCC.
You should have no problem at all receiving KSMO-DT after July 1st.
After KSMO-DT goes full power, every major station in KC will be at their full licensed power.
You should be receiving these digital channels from KC: 7, 18, 24, 31, 34, 36, 42, 47, 51
Oh and BTW, Welcome to the KC thread!!
Sounds like the Time Warner / Comcast Kansas City Market Swap won't happen until the FCC decides how to split up Adelphia between the two companies. So we may have TWC for a little longer in the KC market before Comcast takes them over. Aaron Barnhart is working on an article on the very subject that should be published soon.
squeak49 06-16-06, 11:58 AM Eyedox, good to know - thanks for the info. I was wondering about that.
On a separate note, has anybody with D* upgraded to the MPEG-4 receiver and 5-LNB dish required to get HD locals through them? If so, what's the deal? Does it cost anything to upgrade? A new commitment? Any additional programming fee to get them? How's the PQ vs. OTA I'm thinking I want to get this for Dad for Father's Day, but want to know what I'd be getting him into (and what it'd cost me!). We've had problems getting an OTA antenna to work for him.
Thanks in advance!
bphisig 06-16-06, 03:59 PM When TWC switches over to Comcast, what are they going to do about the cable boxes that everyone has? Am I going to have to switch over to a Comcast box or will I be able to keep what I have?
When TWC switches over to Comcast, what are they going to do about the cable boxes that everyone has? Am I going to have to switch over to a Comcast box or will I be able to keep what I have?
I heard there won't be any replacement of equipment, that all the closet gear and customer gear will stay in place. That's not necessarily hard-and-fast info, but I'm sure you TWC customers will be glad to know you won't have to plod through our seriously nasty I-Guide DCT6412 interface.
When you consider that there is a great deal more work/cost involved with switching boxes like with what TWC has now and what Comcast has now, it doesn't work logically. They would have to swap out several pieces of equipment in all of the TWC head ends (box drivers) and all the boxes themselves.... perhaps they would do a slow transition and once they were within a few thousand TWC boxes being all that is left in the 'field' they would have a big push to get those back.... but considering that local Comcast, not 6 months ago, finally got rid of their analog ppv boxes and supporting equipment... there would be -no- way that they would be able to do a mass swapping of equipment. It doesn't make any sense logistically or monetarily... i don't see that happening.... i won't say ever, but it won't be happening within the next 6 years... at a minimum... but by that time i'll bet they'll have something better out that you'll want and so it won't matter :)
bongohawk 06-17-06, 05:40 PM I know this is far fetched but when the Comcast/TWC switch over happens, would it be possible that a Comcast subscriber will be able to use a TWC SA 8300HD box in an original Comcast area? I know the answer is probably NO initially but maybe after several month. When I lived in Mission I had the SA 8300HD box and loved it. Once I moved to Olathe and initially like the look of the Motorola 6412 box, after messing around with the Iguide and setup I found this Motorola box to be EXTREMELY Inferior to the SA 8300HD box. I do know that there are some Comcast areas throughout the Country that use the SA boxes, but I guess we will see.

The US Open golf is almost unwatchable on 41 OTA. Better be fixed before MNF
two934s 06-17-06, 07:44 PM I didn't get any pixcelation on 41-1 OTA but it seemed like 1/2 the cameras weren't in HD. Is that really the case or is the picture because of the new 41-2 channel? I usually don't compain about picture unless its pixcelating really bad -- but it did seem like a dropdown in quality in the picture.

Half the cameras weren't in HD. I watched on KSNT-27 from Topeka. We are spoiled by the Masters on CBS, where since the tournament is held there every year, they set up really nice camera towers, all with HD hookup. To have so many HD cameras on an Open course where they only televise once a generation is currently cost-prohibitive. Just be thankful NBC showed any HD at all (was this their first HD golf broadcast?).
KSBugeater 06-19-06, 10:44 AM Also, let me say that I like the WeatherPlus subchannel. I have D*, so live, local radar is not always available to me on TV. I only receive KSHB-DT about 20% of the time, so last night was the first chance I got to check out WeatherPlus.
I must also add that I'm interested in weather. Not to the point of watching the Weather Channel 24/7, but I like to hear about the forces that dictate our skies.
I also have to add the disclaimer that I can also watch NBC HD on KSNT-27 out of Topeka ;-). But before you get jealous, 27 will be multicasting one of the new networks this fall, so there goes our quality, too. Then they'll probably add WX+ to come to 3 subchannels.
Bradtothebone 06-19-06, 10:54 AM I'm seeing fewer problems with KSHB's multicasting than I thought I would. The US Open looked pretty good (when it was HD). Football may be another story, however. I really liked someone's suggestion a few weeks ago that Scripps-Howard should put WX+ on one of KMCI's subchannels instead of KSHB's, and give it a 41-X alias. They've got plenty of bandwidth over there to waste!
Brad
nerual96 06-19-06, 11:08 AM On my 65" RPTV the picture was washed out without the clarity usually associated with 1080i. The lack of depth and 3D was amazing. You could really see the problems when the camera was panning. It was very disappointing to say the least. I would guess the quality was somewhere around DVD, perhaps even less.

19.2 is the HD sub-channel, and it looks fine when broadcasting HD - which is after 6PM when there is only one other sub-channel active. Also, they only have 4 digital channels, not 5. They also still broadcast analog, but that is on channel 19, so it does not affect the bandwidth available on 18.
The only time things really get screwed up is during Pledge, when 19.2 seems to get weird.

If 19.2 is the HD subchannel then why is 19.1 showing the same program stretched. Why can't they shut-down 19.1 during HD times and just show 19.2. Else they could shutdown 19.2 and just show HD on 19.1.

Typically, 19.1 mirrors whatever is on the analog channel. This is usually, but not always, different than what is on 19.2, which is the national PBS-HD feed. If they could automate it so that 19.1 would go away when the programs are the same, it would make 19.2 look better, certainly.

If you are seeing something "stretched" on 19.1 (and you mean that it is filling the full width of your 16x9 display), then it is your display (or something on your end) that is stretching it. 19.1 is not HD and is therefore not 16x9. They may at times be showing a 16x9 program inside a 4x3 signal.

Ok, so I'm trying to learn as quickly as I can, but I guess I just don't understand how my antenna works.
I have a RCA Antenna ANT525 that's hooked straight into the back of my HDTV now, but by Thursday morning, will be hooked into the back of my shinny new HR10-250.
I can get most of all of the channels that I would want. The Fox, CBS, NBC, UPN, and WB affliates, but not so much with the ABC (forgive, haven't lived in town long enough to remember all of the call signs).
The antenna has a variable 45db gain adjusting knob, but I've had no luck. I live basically right at 87th Parkway and I-435 on the second floor of an appartment. The antenna is inside, but the other night, I hooked up a long run of coax and an extension cord, and took it outside onto the balcony, and throughout the house, and could never get my TV to recognize that channel. I am I doing something wrong?
Help is appreciated in advance!!!
kcjefff 06-27-06, 01:21 PM I don't know much about specific antennas, I'm a cable customer, but I do know that KMBC (ABC) is VHF, not UHF. Make sure your antenna is OK for that.

KSBugeater 06-28-06, 09:38 AM Dorv,
Since 9.1 is VHF (ch 7 to be exact), reception is trickier than the others. The dipoles (rabbit ears) must be properly oriented to the signal. From your location, KMBC is just a little east of northeast. The rabbit ears must be oriented perpendicular to that line of signal, so one should point NNW and the other SSE. Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the ideal dipole length should be around 43 inches to tune in VHF 7. So make sure that each rabbit ear is only around 21 inches (half) long. If you have them fully extended, you've matched the wavelength for VHF 2, which you don't want unless you'd like to keep an eye on St. Joseph KQTV. Finally, from my experience, reception is best when the rabbit ears are 45 degrees from the ground, meaning about halfway between straight up and horizontal. Your mileage may vary. Good luck! Good Morning America will never be the same for you...
Its not Good Morning America as much as Lost ;)
I've played with it a lot (and noticed that its better with the shorter 'ears.' Will play with it a bit tomorrow.
Thanks much!
Bradtothebone 06-29-06, 05:35 PM Dorv,

The source I have gives the formula for dipole length as 143/f, where f is the frequency in MHz and the length is in meters. So, in inches, it would be:
39.4 (inches/meter)*143/f.
For channel 7, with a frequency of 175.25 MHz, the dipole length is about 32 inches, so each "ear" of the rabbit ears should be half of that, or 16 inches.
Another way to look at it is to use the wave equation and solve for wavelength:
wavelength = speed of light/frequency = 9.8*10E8/1.7525*10E8 = 5.6 ft, or 67.2 inches. If each "ear" of a dipole antenna is 1/4 wavelength, that would be 16.8 inches.
So, it looks to me like 16-17 inches is about right, but I could be missing something.

Welcome back! The four digital tuners are all showing mid-90's off of an attic mount antenna near Liberty, MO. Even the old DTC-100 seems happy with the signal. Good work!
Thanks for all of the advice. When my HD DVR from DirecTV was installed today, my OTA signal took a bigger hit due to some (known) internal wiring issues in the box (or, at least thats what I think is going on to the best of my knowledge).
So, I made a trip down to Best Buy to upgrade the antenna. Picked up a (still indoor, though, in the endgame, its become an outdoor antenna) Terk HDTVlp Antenna Pro. No rabbit ears or anything like that to play with, but its got a detachable reflector.
Either way, I was able to get back FOX, NBC, and CBS. Still no ABC, and I've lost the UPN and WB affliates.

Hey speaking of 62, I can't stand when they break in with weather alerts during the show instead of during commercals. They don't seem to care whats on 62 and will favor 5 and instead of doing two separate break in's, they interrupt both channels at the same time (when 5 is on commercial of course). They will always favor channel 5 instead of treating them equally.
Thanks.

KSBugeater 06-30-06, 12:20 PM Dorv, to get KMBC, you need the rabbit ears. The Terk probably isn't as good for VHF. Now if the old set you had also has a "cable in", you can plug your Terk into that and switch between them depending on the channel you need.
Brad, thanks for the length calculations. 43 was just a number that popped into my head, but I was too lazy to look up the formula to verify.
Finally, I thought I tried to get 62/47 last night and didn't see it, but I'm kinda foggy on that. I'll check tonight to give you a report from near Topeka.

I think I will just live without it for now. I'm getting ready to move in about six weeks, so hopefully things will work better over there (somewhere right around Quivra and College). I'll be able to put up an outdoor antenna there, but I'm thinking I might just hold off. If things work out right, I"ll be moving again about a month after that.

KCRedhawk 07-03-06, 12:21 PM Hey guys!
I just made the jump to HD - have a Panasonic 900 projecting onto a 110" screen in the basement. I have D*, but am going to pull OTA locals in since I dont have the newer dish or receiver boxes.
Since we have a VHF channel to worry about locally here, what antenna are you guys using? I tried a Terk HDTVa, but since my setup is in the basement, reception was sub-par. So I need to get an outdoor assembly. I was looking at the Winegard Square Shooter, since it's VHF/UHF. What outdoor ones are you guys using?
I'm located Mur-Len / Blackbob / 135th Street area, so everything is norhteasterly and about 20 miles away from the towers (generally).

I live near 123rd and Blackbob and have D* with the OTA antenna that came with the 3-LNB dish. I pull 85-90 on the strength meter for all the local digital channels (now that KSMO is now full power).
KCRedhawk 07-03-06, 10:02 PM Is it a clip-on type one? Mine didnt come with an antenna, unless there is one built in that I dont know about (and is inconspicouos when you look at the dish)
Bradtothebone 07-04-06, 03:46 PM KSMO-DT (RF Ch 47) on with 1 MW power at about 12:30 today! Reception reports would be appreciated.
Comes in great on my Hitachi LCD (no guide data), but my Dish 622 ignores it. The 622 shows a signal strength of 93, but it won't add it to the guide or show a picture or sound. Must be a PSIP incompatibility issue. Dog, can you contact E* about this? Anyone else seeing this with an E* receiver?

Great job on the signal boost. I have 85-90 percent signal and it is rock solid day and night here in Sedalia. I also now have a very good signal and average picture quality on all five streams from the new KTAJ-DT. But like my Dishnetwork brethern, I have no video nor audio on KSMO-DT with my 811 receiver. I had a great picture on 62 DT until February 2005 then poof--- gone. It must be an encoder compatibility issue with KSMO and Echostar receivers, since its Meridith sister station, KCTV , delivers beautiful pictures via my 811 out here in the sticks.

I also get decent signal strength, but no picture or sound with my E* receiver.
jeffdbs 07-04-06, 06:48 PM Please KSMO DT-47 reset your PSIP encoder so us Dish Network receivers may watch your programming. This same thing happens once in awhile on KCPT DT-18 so I just e-mail KCPT to let them know their PSIP is corrupt. Thank you.
Colonia9 07-05-06, 12:22 AM Have tried to lock in DT47 on my Westinghouse LTV-32w6 for several days using three different antennas in turn, but scan always gives me same 20 KC channels except KSMO. Any one of these antennas feeding Accurian 16-3499 HDTV receiver box connected to above Westinghouse gave good DT47 A/V signal. Was about to call Westinghouse but similar lack of detection experiences noted by others above greatly encourage me to await some urgent action at KSMO.
KSBugeater 07-05-06, 09:48 AM Tried to write Saturday but AVS was down... beautiful picture without pixellation on 62.1 in Meriden, KS. Even more beautiful on Tuesday nights at 8. ;) Thanks for the power boost... I'll be watching more of your programming now.
I haven't tried 16.1 yet. What is JCTV? I can guess that JC is Jesus Christ...
dlnester 07-05-06, 01:34 PM I think JCTV is some kind of Teenager christian channel... not to be confused with JCCC-TV.. which would be the Johnson County Community College channel lol
I hope KSMO will get that PSIP date fixed. I've read on the Wichita board that My Network TV will broadcast in 720p this fall.
rrostie 07-05-06, 11:29 PM I just got a new Sony DHG-HDD250, and am having a few problems. Number 1 issue is it's not receiving KSMO 62.1, (signal strength is only 5%,) while my Walmart US Digital STB receives it fine.
I just hooked it up this afternoon so it doesn't have any listings yet. (The TVGOS listings updates at night.) I also don't have all the channels listed in the TVGOS menu, but this probably needs to be updated overnight as well.
edit: I got listings this morning, but I didn't get any additional channels on the TVGOS. Does anyone else who use this DVR get all the local OTA channels, and if you do, what Zip code do you use?
I live is Belton, so I tried changing the Zip code to Raymore, and I'm waiting for it to update to reload the channel listings. (I don't know why I had any channel listings last night at all.)

Similar issue here...I've got everything digital except for KSMO. I am using the onboard tuner on a Sony KD-30XS955. The analog signal for channel 62 looks crystal clear, but I can't get the digital channel to lock in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
dlnester 07-06-06, 09:42 PM Most likely the PSIP date issue we've been talking about. It appears that most tuners will not lock onto the signal on RF 47 since that data is corrupt. Not sure when KSMO-DT will get that fixed... soon hopefully.

My 30XS955 picks it up just fine. I just punch in channel 47.3 and there it is.
LiveLite 07-07-06, 12:02 PM KSMO-DT-47 will not automatically scan into my STB, but if I manually add the channel, it accepts it. It takes 6 or 7 seconds for my STB to acknowledge that there is a valid signal there. The automatic scanning function times out before the tuner detects a valid signal. I have seen this behavior on the other stations in the 'early days' from time to time. STB = Samsung SIRT-151.
Colonia9 07-07-06, 02:00 PM Further my 07-04-06 posting. Thanks KSMO. My LTV-32w6 now locks in 47-1 with resulting brilliant video and sound!
jeffdbs 07-07-06, 04:34 PM I was able to get a hold of KSMO DT-47 (62-1) engineering. Yes they are aware of the problem and are working hard to solve the problem. Hopefully we all will be able to receive DT-47 again very soon.
Colonia9 07-07-06, 09:12 PM Apparently my congrats earlier today to KSMO were premature. The DT-47 signal was recognized by a Westinghouse LTV-32w6 scan several hours ago and viewed for a short period. It must be a work in progress because this evening signal is again a no show.
It started showing up for me this morning as channel 47.62. Getting closer... :)

kcjefff 07-13-06, 07:11 PM That will make moving out of KC that much easier for TWC.
Colonia9 07-14-06, 08:32 PM Using an Accurian 16-3499 HDTV receiver because of advantageous built in signal reception tools, the following strength comparisons were obtained today at Weatherby Lake. Antenna is a chimney mounted Winegard PR-8800 with rotation capability but fixed and directed at mid cluster of the KC stations for purpose of exercise.
STRENGTH METER SNR
4-1 86 28.5
5-1 92 32.0
9-1 94 33.4
16-1 90 31.3
19-1 91 31.9
29-1 94 33.5
38-1 82 26.6
41-1 86 29.1
50-1 89 30.9
62-1 85 29.0
Note all readouts jump around so logging numbers above has to be a judgment call. Regarding much discussed KSMO(62-1), tweaking ant. direction to optimize signal strength gave 93 and an SNR of 33.0. Similarly rotating ant. for best KTWU Topeka (11-1) gave 79 and 25.0 respectively, for very acceptable viewing
Bradtothebone 07-17-06, 03:34 PM I hadn't checked for awhile, but over the weekend I was once again able to load KSMO into my Dish 622. It's showing as 62.1 and coming in at 95%. Thanks, Dog-of-Madness!

Maybe a little more work and they will get it fixed
technicalitalian 07-20-06, 02:51 PM Just a preemptive notice that the British Open will not originate in HD. However, ABC has notified us that they are taking the PAL feed, which is being shot in 16x9 aspect ratio/SD and upconverting it to 720P. Since we're starting with 625 lines, it may not look toooo bad. We'll wait and see. Please do not adjust your sets or try to call the station.....TI
bongohawk 07-21-06, 09:21 AM TI,
How is the new building for Channel 9 coming along? Have they ordered any new equipment for the new studio?
KSBugeater 07-21-06, 10:55 AM TI - Is that the same feed that TNT is using for their coverage of The Open? It's pretty good... not Masters good, but good. I'll watch about any golf in HD. I can't say with 100% acuracy but since the cost of doing golf is so high, mostly due to the sheer number of cameras, I can't imagine they're using anything but the pool feed....TI

Gojhawks 07-22-06, 10:18 AM TI, just wanted to say thanks to you guys getting it right on the British Open. From reading the programming forum here a number of the ABC affiliates didn't get the message the broadcast was going to be widescreen and have been showing it in 4:3. I really appreciate KMBC went right to widescreen. It looks nice for an upconvert.

On my Sony DVR, I can punch in channels even if the scan didn't pick them up for some reason. (Like I can get the new weather channel that way.) I can't get 62-1 but I can still get it on 47-62.
dlnester 07-22-06, 02:27 PM Is it just me or does the baseball game on FOX today just not look very crisp? It just seems compressed for some reason and I'm receiving it over the air from WDAF-DT with high signal strength.

For competitive reasons, I can neither confirm or deny this assumption....TI Haha ... therefore it *IS* HD. Hell, I find myself watching GMA now instead of Today just because it's in HD now. Local news is next. 1st HD is my news station. Denver has a local HD news affiliate now. Just saw it last weekend. Nice. So hurry up already TI! Give us KCHD News!
dlnester 07-24-06, 09:00 PM Is anybody else getting audio drops at random times on KCTV-DT? I have 6 bars of signal, no on-screen artifacts and my audio dips for a second every now and then in the middle of a program.
jeffdbs 07-24-06, 10:30 PM For competitive reasons, I can neither confirm or deny this assumption....TI
If KMBC-DT local news goes to HD-this would be really nice. Hopefully TI will be taking a few pictures during construction. We the local viewers may someday see what it takes to have a first class local HD news broadcasting studio. With Kansas City local broadcasters now full-power digital, the local news in HD is something more to cheer for. :)

It's these "assumptions" that can get an employee in trouble or at the very least lead to that person not being able to post on this forum.
I appreciate TI contributions to this forum. He stated "no comment" and the reasons why he can not comment.
Don't jack with a person's livelyhood...let it go.

Calm down guys. If channel 9 is smart, and I assume they are, they wouldn't waste money stocking a studio with all SD equipment, when the HD generation is upon us. So I understand TI's comment of "no comment" and he left it at that, which is fine. I just wanted to see how the new building was coming along, and fully expecting that all of their new studio, and hopefully mobile equipment will be HD. Now I could be wrong and once they get into the new building it will still be SD, but I think that would disappoint ALOT of people. Well ALOT of HD people.
dlnester 07-27-06, 06:25 PM Unless something is wrong with my tuner, WDAF-DT and KCTV-DT currently isn't transmitting any guide data. I'm getting guide data from everything else in the market including KTAJ-DT and KPXE-DT

dlnester 07-31-06, 04:56 PM I just tried my brothers DirecTV system and he has the channel too. GMC Gospel Music Channel. http://www.gospelmusicchannel.com/
I have no idea why they added it on Channel 15... of all channels. It isn't anything "local".
When is AT&T's U-verse coming to KC area? Does anyone know? If nothing else, it will at least provide some competition to Comcast and we end up with lower rates! Who knows. I would like to get rid of my home phone line and keep just DSL. I am getting the $17.99 DSL pro with AT&T right now but have to pay another $18 for the phone line. It is still cheaper than paying $57.00 for cable internet for Comcast. I have absolutely no need for a voice line and have not even hooked up a phone to it. Too bad DSL+voice is still cheaper than cable modem.
dlnester 08-01-06, 07:57 PM I wouldn't hold your breath, as the technology is probably going to be pretty slow to roll out. Also, living in Missouri will also cause more of a delay because Missouri didn't pass the act that would regulate the telcos providing video from cities to the state. Kansas passed this act.
Gojhawks 08-01-06, 09:06 PM For those on Sunflower Cable, I just noticed they added Food HD on channel 227 today. I am watching the lovely Giada on "Everything Italian" as I type. Mmmm, mmmm, good!

I am hoping the nationwide franchise bill currently passed by the house and up for vote in the senate will get approval and then we don't have to worry about whether Missouri passes the law or not. That is my understanding of it anyway!
