Well I for one did not think 1080p broadcasting was possible for local HDTV broadcasting. It seems the equipment is being ready to bring us 1080p programming. "The 3Gb/s bandwidth capability enables broadcasters to migrate from the existing 720p and 1080i HDTV standards to the emerging 1080p format". If you read the thread you will see we all complained of this awhile ago. Please join us in either calling the station to complain or you can send a letter from their website. We've all done it but nothing has changed thus far. I simply don't watch the channel anymore.

Fox 4 signal quality

I know that Fox 4 claims to have the strongest signal in the city but at my home, they are the pickiest. I have an outdoor antenna with an amp in it. If I don't power the amp, it attenuates (expected behavior). Even with the attenuation, most channels come but not Fox. Last night, I had set up to record House from WDAF using my Sony HD-DVR. I came home at 9 pm and noticed a lot of pixellation and mostly unwatchable picture. I gave up on it. The amp was working fine. I bought a new power supply (coax power injector) recently and fox worked fine, but yesterday (may be weather related), it crapped out.

Curiously, my in door Silver Sensor picks up fox pretty well. However, it has trouble with the other channels.

I use a Winegard Sensar III GS2200 amped version with a 15V DC power injector in the house.

It seems for me the Vip-622 issue has been fixed fo KCPT OTA DT-18. Anyone else noticed this? :)
I just got back from a trip and noticed it was working now. I called the engineer at KCPT and apparently the issue was with the 622 and they worked with Dish to resolve it. Must have been resolved with an update to the 622. Update- Noticed the problem was back on 2/21/07. Oh well.

We just purchased a new HD TV and have Everest. I have been generally happy with Everest, but notice the available HD options are rather sparse. However, after a brief review of other cable or DTV options here, it seems Everest is as good or better than most.

My biggest disappointment is that Fox Sports Midwest, which carries my beloved St. Louis Blues, is not in HD.

Is anyone else getting Fox Sports Midwest in HD? That would be enough for me to jump.

Am I correct in believing that Everest is otherwise as good or better than other local options?

I too would like to know if any of the cable providers in the KC area that carry FSN-Midwest in HD. Not only am I a Blues fan, but there is the possibility that the Royals will be on FSN this year. This would be the two reasons why I would upgrade to Comcast digital. The 3rd reason would be if the Sci-Fi channel goes HD. Right now I only receive HD OTA.

KSHB NBC Dolby Digital
Did KSHB get a new Dolby Digital decoder or did NBC out of New York? The reason why I ask is since the beginning of the year 41 has been Pro logic and today I noticed they are now back to Dolby Digital (DD 2.0) like they were last year. I don't know if this is a local issue or a national issue.

KC-Technerd
02-19-07, 11:11 PM
At some time in the past KSHB had been broadcasting EVERYTHING encoded for 5.1 even if it was 2.0 sound. I'm not able to sample what KSHB is doing right now, but it would be preferable if they are broadcasting in DD in the correct format. 2.0 in Dolby Digital can be set to key the decoder to decode it as 2 channel stereo, or as Pro-Logic Surround Sound. I'll follow up on this when I get to check what they are doing.

2007 is the last year for the Royals on RSTN, therefore the switch to HD for their broadcasts will not occur until 2008. Any Royals games you catch in HD will have to be from ESPN or FOX, and while their division is the best in baseball, it also has the fewest eyeballs, so don't look for much love from the national networks. (Meanwhile, the Chiefs continue to get numerous national TV appearances... hmmm)

I don't know if KC DirecTV subs can get FSN Midwest in HD, but there are only 2 HD telecasts left this season for the Blues, no matter what your provider: 2/27 and 3/20

Everest has said they will be adding FSN HD in 2007 ( along with A&E HD ). I believe FSN HD carries HD broadcasts from the various regional FSN's.

All--

Just curious if anyone else is having problems recording analog cable channels on their SA 8300HD with Time Warner? I consistently get heavy macro blocking/pixelation when recording analog channels (2-77) to the point that the show is unwatchable. I also see the same pixelation sometimes when channel surfing, but usually changing the channel up or down fixes the issue. I have seen this problem on two different boxes.

I had a tech come out, but he said it was a known-firmware issue and nothing could be done until TWC sends out an upgrade. Anyone else having the same problem?

Everest's original HD brochure and their web page indicate a channel called IND2 at, I beleive, Channel 659. There is no such channel. I called them and the employee said he had never heard of it.

I subsequently emailed their help desk, but have yet to receive an answer. Supposedly, IND2 carried concerts and IMAX films.

I didn't see the channel on other carriers, but everyone carries IND (presumably IND1).

Is there still an IND2 or has it fallen by the wayside and Everest has failed to update their webpage?

INHD2 Merged with INHD 1, so now there is just INHD. Both these channels are owned by TWC and Comcast, and maybe a couple other Cable providers. I guess they decided there wasn't enough content for 2 channels, so they merged them. I believe INHD2 went off the air around December, I could be wrong on the exact time .

I'm fairly new with home theatre but experienced in audio and professional recording etc.

We watch several NBC shows and have noticed that they sound terrible. Last week or two noticed 24, Heroes, Friday Night Lights are so compressed that they not only have lost their frequency extremes and sound hollow in the midrange but they sound phasey. It sounds like low bit rate syndrome to me. To me they have taken it WAY too far and to the point of making me quit watching the station altogether.

I have Time Warner with an Sci Atl 8300 HD DVR box going digital into an Arcam AVR.

Anyone know if this is NBC or local affiliate? I think it is safe to assume it is not me and not Time Warner (this time) because other channels aren't nearly this bad.

Is OTA better?

I think some of this is the NBC feed, as they are being sent on a KU band bird and we've noticed this a lot on Sunday Night Football on NBC. Also, KSHB-DT is multicasting with KSHB-41.2 carrying "Weather Plus" which is starving the main feed.

I am wondering if the sound problem is with they decoder. While watching their news tonight, one of their reporters was covering the Tornado and it sounded like it does for National programming with the weird echo effect and then a few seconds later it was fixed. I wonder if their engineers are messing with the sound decoder?

I was watching it OTA on KMBC 9.1. About once a minute the sound and picture would glitch. It did it during the commercials as well.

I guess it could be my antenna (but I have a constant 98% signal during the glitches as well), my tuner, the network, or KMBC.

After the Oscars I left it on KMBC 9.1, and watched the local newscast. The broadcast went to standard definition, and the glitches stopped. I was getting sound glitches at least once a minute, and occasionally the sound glitch was associated w/ a pixilization.

I still don't know if it is a problem w/ my tv tuner or not (Panasonic 42PX600U).

Thankyou for your responses.

Even on their site it didn't list anything for the UFC event in HD. The VIP-622 used by Dish does not like the KCPT OTA signal on 19.1 to 19.4. I don't know if you are seeing the same thing, but the signal will drop out about every 5 seconds. This does not happen if I go OTA straight to the TV. It has been an issue on and off for several months now. This is also happening nationwide on other channels.

I really like our local Over-the-Air Digital HDTV broadcasting. Saving people is more important than HDTV picture broadcasting. Over-the-Air broadcasting is vital for national and local weather, security and diaster information. We must keep our eyes on the ball and remember a broadcasting station has a duty to inform their viewers of all coming dangers.

I agree with Jeff. We all have to remember that HDTV and Digital TV are still new and it is a changeover that will slowly be made. My HDTV is currently unplugged because I can't afford to replace it if it gets zapped... (like my last TV)

Whenever there is severe weather in the area all they need to do is run a crawl at the bottom of the screen to keep everyone updated. They don't need to make a major production out of it. All of the local weathercasters are trying to one-up each other and show off their fancy weather equipment.

The FCC should allocate a single digital channel in each market, coming off a single community stick, for weather coverage / community service and allow all major network affiliates serving the market to have a subchannel slice of it. The affiliates could get their content to the single stick via low-cost point-to-point fiber.

We know, based on Weather+, that a low bandwidth subchannel is more than sufficient for weather and in the future they can broadcast their subchannels in 480p 16:9 when aspect ratio becomes an issue.

We know based on PAX in KC that while not the prettiest thing in the world, it's possible to multicast 5 or 6 feeds in a single digital slot ... again, sufficient for weather and likely to get better as encoders improve.

To make it even more convenient for the community, this weather channel should have the same virtual channel number in all markets (channel 1 sounds like a good idea), and the affiliates should be able to bid on who gets 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, etc. (that way, they can make the feds even more money). Alternately you could do 1-9 for KMBC, 1-41 for KSHB, etc., or you could have a consistent subchannel number for weather/community service (say, 23 (for Weather)) so KMBC weather would be 9-23, KSHB weather would be 41-23, etc.

For those that argue that redundancy is a critical component of this scenario, should the shared weather broadcast/community stick get taken out for some reason, each affiliate could independently choose to use their primary feed on an emergency-only basis.

This is really needed anyway to serve community interests the way the FCC claims is important. If you don't have cable in most municipalities, you don't have access to all of the community bulletin boards, board of education meetings, city commission meetings, school lunch menus, etc. This solution could provide access to this kind of content to all people regardless of income level. It would also allow the local broadcasters to repurpose all that SD equpiment they're getting ready to throw out.

Does anyone else have the DirecTV HR20-700 DVR? If so, can anyone get more than 3 subchannels out of KPXE 50? Since it doesn't have a scan feature, we are at D*s mercy as to what OTA channels are in our region, and also for this reason KTAJ 16.1-16.5 are also unavailable since they are technically St. Joe stations. I haven't reset local channels lately, but I wondered if someone else has.

I need some help from some of you TWC (MO) folks. I have a friend who has his QAM tuner-equipped TV hooked up directly to the cable (no HD box). He lives in an apartment building with old wiring, and the bandwidth on the cable isn't sufficient to reliably get the high (digital and HD channels). When he does a channel scan, he can get all of the local HD channels except KCTV-5-1. He wonders if it's too intermittent to scan in, or if it's just too weak to receive at all.

Does anyone know what the actual QAM channel number that he needs to enter into his remote to directly access KCTV-DT would be? (Not the "system" number that you would enter into a STB) Any help would be appreciated.

That will make it very interesting for those with Dish Network. Currently Dish Network is pulling in KCTV-DT and passing it through cropped as the analog channel. You can tell when it chops off the CBS HD logo as well as some content being show on screen in HD and it going off the edge of the television.

If KCTV does what they did last year... 1 game on KCTV Analog, 1 game on KCTV-DT and then the sub-channel, those with Dish Network will not get the Analog game but a different digital game.

I have TWC in Overland Park

Has anyone noticed with the new navigator on TWC that you no longer have the "squeeze" feature option in the aspect settings. On my newer HDTV with the SA 3250 HD box, I noticed that all the SD channels went to 4:3 after the new navigator system went in to effect. You can go into the settings and stretch to fill the screen , but what I found odd was that the "stretch" setting applies to ALL channels including the HD tier. I tried changing settings under the "display" but the stretch change appears universal. If you select stretch or zoom, then all channels including HD are stretched or zoomed.

I have an older cable box (pioneer hahaha) on another HDTV that has the old guide and played with it to find what I was missing.
The old guide has an additional setting in the aspect setting category that allows you a "squeeze" feature eliminating the black side bars on 4:3 SD channels. This feature does not affect the aspect ratio on the HD channels on that TV.

Anyone know if there is another setting I have not found or are you not experiencing this?

Thank you

Roger

Does anyone know if the big 12 games this weekend being broadcast on espn plus will be in HD? it looks like other then our region espn 2 hd is broadcasting to the rest of the nation. Can the local espn plus station even broadcast it in HD?

Unfortunately, I doubt that KMCI-38 or KSNT-27 has an uplink to the satellite ESPN-HD comes from. It's a darn shame. I wonder if we wrote to 38 and 27, they'd allow DirecTV and our local cable companies to show us the HD FEED ONLY of ESPN/ESPN2. Heck, I'd promise to have the SD local broadcast in a PIP just to watch local commercials if it meant we could see the games in HD!!!!

Last night's Baylor/Mizzou game on ESPN2 was NOT in HD, but the weekend games will be, according to the HD Sports Guide. Saturday's semi-finals are on ESPN2HD; Sunday's final is on ESPN-HD. I think the games on ESPN or ESPN2 are not on a local affiliate (I'm not sure, but I think so), so you should be able to watch on the ESPN channel, provided you receive it.

Saturday's semi's ARE on 27 and 38, so ESPN2HD will be blacked out, but Sunday's championship will air only on ESPN (HD).

KSBugeater is correct. the big 12 site shows that espn plus regional stations show the game in big 12 territory and the rest of the country gets espn 2. Can sports bars get around the blackout if they have a subsciption of some kind?

channel 38 and 27 are about the worst looking on my cable (sunflower) when it comes to basketball.

I just got through sending an e-mail to KMCI about this HD blackout of the Big XII tournament. They should have put this on KSHB-HD or allow ESPN2HD to carry the game in our area. The same problem occurred when HDNet would carry a St. Louis Blues game, but would be blacked out in our area because FSN Midwest was carrying it. I got into a 10 minute discussion with a D* rep regarding this, but this is part of the carriage agreement the cable and satellite systems have with local broadcasters.

Is there anyone associated with Comcast that reads this forum that can answer the following questions:

1) FSNMWHD (Channel 201 in Olathe) has been broadcasting the color bar test pattern for about three months; and even when a program is shown as being broadcast on this channel (Blues hockey games, for example) the test pattern is shown. No one at 800-COMCAST can answer if this channel will actually go live. Will this channel become active before the end of the NHL season or before the beginning of the Big XII football season?

2) Will HDNFL be placed permanently on channel 207 (now INHD2)?

I am in Jackson County on Time Warner cable and everything is out of sync. Anyone else notice this? Everything for me is out of sync by a couple of frames but TNTHD just went live and it is out by probably 6-8 frames. It is pretty bad.

It is out just running HDMI carrying video and audio directly into my panel. Problem is video is ahead of audio so delaying it through my AVR is of no use.

Anyone else experience this or could I have a bad cable box?

EDIT:
Well, just saw a thread about TNT specifically, but I seem to be a bit off everywhere. Ao, anyone else see all their broadcasts with audio a few frames behind video?

Although both ESPN2 and ESPN2HD on D* were blacked out at the beginning of the KU-K State game this afternoon, I happened to tune into ESPN2HD at about 2:40 p.m. and the game was in the clear! It was still blacked out on ESPN SD. I watched the last few minutes of the game and the difference in quality compared to ESPN+ on 38 was unbelievable. Channel 38's signal is almost unwatchable. They must use the same equipment as RSTN because the video quality is just as horrendous. Unfortunately, the Texas-Oklahoma State game is now blacked out--but it might be worth checking ESPN2HD again near the end of the game to see if the blackout gets lifted too early again.

We and Everest don't even have MYKSMOTV HD yet or even Metro Weather that TWCKC has.
We have The TV Guide Channel and Weatherscan and the others don't.
Kansas City Star reports the Changes that Comcast here is going to be doing.
Metro Sports will have HD channel and so on.
TWCKC and Comcast Interactive TV will be here soon.
Theirs channels that TWCKC and Everest has that Comcast should also like ShopNBC,Lifetime Real Women,Sleuth,ESPN Deportes and so on.
I'm glad to see Olathe/MO Comcast user posting here.

jjaomni, you need an antenna that will receive VHF signals to pick up 9.1. That means one with dipoles (rabbit ears) or a big aerial. Their digital freqency is the same as VHF ch. 7. I used to pick it up from 60 miles west using rabbit ears: each 45 deg. up from the ground plane and perpendicular to the signal direction (so if you're looking thru the antenna at 315 deg. you see an upright "V" made by the rabbit ears. They should each be around 20" long.

Last year they tested 5.3 but never actually used it. They had 3 games on at once...

1 on KCTV-5 Analog
1 on KCTV-5.1
1 on KCTV-5.2

This year it looks like KCTV-5 Analog and KCTV-5.1 will have the same game, with 5.2 having another.

Hi all. Regarding our upcoming broadcasts of the NCAA tourney, I wanted to give you a heads-up. This year CBS requires our HD game (5.1) to be the same game as on our analog channel. We cannot put a different game on 5.1 than on 5 analog as we have in the past.

Most feeds to affiliates are what's called "flex feeds" where the scheduled game is the main game but New York control may jump around to various games as situations warrant. But stations may choose to have a "constant feed" of a game that has high local interest. In our case of course that would be the KU game.

Many or all of you may be very disappointed, but due to current CBS infastructure limitations of separate HD feeds to affiliates, they can only provide "flex" HD feeds. Since again, we have to have the same game on analog 5 and HD 5.1, and there are no "constant" HD feeds available, we must upconvert the KU game this Friday from the SD constant feed. The KU game Friday will not be in HD.

It's totally out of our hands, so please don't be mad at KCTV !!

Re bongohawk's question about 5.3 last year, I did set up a test with one HD and two SD's but there was just not enough bandwidth with our current encoder capabilities to make them all look any good. (Of course I realize some of you think that just one additional SD degrades the HD, but for the tourney we want to provide more choices during the early rounds for the basketball fans).

03-14-07, 09:43 AM
Well that kind of suck about the KU game not being in HD. Is CBS in New York working on updating their HD equipment? What I am referring to is with the NFL feeds of 3 games at a time. I know they mentioned where they might try to get next season's of NFL games up to 4 HD games a week. I know this won't help us out this weekend, but CBS really needs to work on updating their equipment. I know, I know they were one of the first to get HD equipment and broadcast HD, but I am afraid they might fall behind.

CycloneMike
03-14-07, 09:45 AM
I think KCTV better change their message on the website which indicates that all the games shown on channel 5 analog will be in HD on 5.1. You just said above that this is not true!

The KU game not in HD - what a joke that the KU fans will get to see all the other Big 12 games in HD, but not the KU game.

Once again this shows why CBS is still the laughingstock of sports programming ability with inane decisions like this. Who can local fans call to get this changed?

During the KU game why not have the flex feed with KU the primary game in HD on 5.1 and the constant feed on the SD channel 5 Analog?

If someone really wants to be able to see the entire KU game they can switch back to SD when the network cuts into the KU flex feed game.

Run a scroll on the 5.1 channel occasionally that tells the local viewers that the KU game without interruptions to other sites can be seen on the 5 Analog channel in its entirety.

I am not a big KU fan, but feel for them getting short-changed like this.

I had comcast last year and they added the KCTV supplemental channels.

Also to answer your question about 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3, these are sub channels on the KCTV Digital feed. With a digital ATSC feed you can send sub channels, typically up to 5 on one digital broadcast. I may be wrong on the number of sub channels. The only problem is, when you keep adding sub channels to your main digital channel it takes away the picture quality of the main channel, and well all the sub channels. Last year KCTV had 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3 and I noticed that 5.3's picture quality was pretty bad, but then again that could have partly been an issue with Comcast and their bandwidth, and I don't want to go there.

If you can get Digital broadcast from an ATSC Over The Air (OTA) turner then you can pick up these sub channels and they are labeled as 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3. The KCTV main HD channel is 5.1. Sorry to be rambling on. I hope that answers your question.

Thanks, Dog, it's good to hear from you again. I really like CycloneMike's idea of running the flex feed of the KU game on 5.1 in HD and the constant feed in SD on 5.2. I guess the only problem with that is that most people (still!) are going to be watching on the analog channel, and would be upset about not seeing the whole game. I'd sure consider it if I were you, though. I'm not sure why you say that it is totally out of your hands - it sounds like you do have a choice. ;)

Don't take this personally, but this is the most inane explanation of a television network policy that penalizes an audience expecting their HOME team to get the same coverage as other teams across the country. Why not put the HD broadcast of the KU game on KSMO-HD? This would not violate CBS's policy.

It's probably a good thing, then, that the game is on at 6:20 Friday night, because if this was during business hours, there would be a flood of calls to the KCTV switchboard the likes of which would not have been seen since the last Katie Horner panic broadcast.

Ok, I'm going to be the typical noob. I don't want to read too much. I just want somebody that can help me get OTA HD by this weekend!!!!!

My wife gave me a surprise LG 32" LCD on Monday. I called and found out that it was going to be almost 30 bucks a month for the 20 crappy Dish Network HD stations. I will not pay that much for what I know I can get for free.

That being said, I willing to work out some sort of trade, payment, future favor of any sort (within reason, no first born child or anything) to whomever can help me achieve this by this weekend's games.

I'm ok with watching the Hawks tomorrow in SD, but I want HD ASAP. I live down in Ottawa, KS (30 miles SW of Olathe). I've tried pretty much all of the most powerful amplified "HD" antennas that our Walmart has, with no success. I can't even tune in the analog stations very well with them (which is strange because 2 years ago when we didn't have cable yet, we got like 5 or 6 network stations).

So, not I'm looking on the antennaweb site and they told me that I need a medium directional outdoor antenna with a pre-amp.

What is a pre-amp. Is that just an in-line signal booster? If so, which model, Walmart and RadioShack have 12 and 24 dB boosters.

please feel free to email me or post back here and I will call you.

In return, I have loads of computer parts, and am more than happy to help out with any computer/server/technical issue you might have.

I will make a small donation to your cause (if you have one) but I'd like to keep this as informal as possible.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

DoM: On the Programming forum, under the Magic8Ball speaks about the NCAA tournament, there was a posting that states an affiliate may opt to show the local game in HD and switch to the upconverted SD format if the flex feed goes to another game. Since the games that have been broadcast have stayed with the original game for 95% of the game, has KCTV given any thought to doing this during the KU game? 95/5 HD/upconverted SD is better than 0/100 HD/upconverted SD.

But Comcast and Everest don't have MYKSMOTV HD yet so it would be fair to TWCKC to show the HD broadcast on MYKSMOTV HD.
Comcast can keep the Sports SD after March Madness is over and replace it with another HD channel like A and E HD or MYKSMOTV HD and put the other one on the second INDHD we have.
How about put games on MYKSMOTV.

Wow. I've been watching games all day in HD and I tune in to the KU game--the one I really care about--and it's SD! Going back through the posts over the last few days I see this has already been discussed. Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of discontent.

Is anyone not getting the KU game in HD on Comcast?
Mines 4:3 and I am mad!!!

Same on Dish Network and OTA. It was talked about a few posts back, apparently CBS is to blame.

I hope this won't be the case with all KU games this month (assuming they go very, very far... :) )

After calls to KCTV and Comcast. It's the people here at AVS who really know whats going on with the non HD feed of the KU game. I read the past posts to get up to speed. I just assumed that the game would be in HD. It's a nuumber 1 seed. Once again CBS proves it is a worthless broadcast company. I am proud that I work for KMBC. ABC would have done this tournament right!!! :)

So do we get to watch the KU game Sunday in HD?
or is CBS & KCTV5 going to suck then too?

squeak49
03-17-07, 02:25 PM
First of all, it has nothing to do with the seed. The game was produced in HD, but the "dedicated" feed (as opposed to the feed where they cut around to all the games, and cut away from 40-point blowouts for buzzer-beaters) can not be done in HD, because of limitations at CBS. DogOfMadness was nice enough to warn us about this, no matter how much it sucks.

Remember, last year, only 4 of 8 sites were in HD, so they've progressed. As for subsequent rounds, my guess is that we'll only get them in HD if there are no other games going on at the same time. Probably won't happen until round 3, at least. I don't know what time they play tomorrow.

I'm sorry, but I just could not let this one pass by without at least a small bit of sarcasm. I'm so happy that you believe ABC would do the tournament right. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this the network that has to farm out their sports production to ESPN? If you actually do work in television, you should be able to get your arms around the concept that no network has the technical infrasture in place yet to do infinite combinations of HD feeds. If a station chooses to use a constant game feed, then it will not be in HD. So if KCTV had chosen to pass the "flex" feed instead, then everyone would be whining that CBS switched away from the KU game. Until all technical plants are all HD all the time, you can expect this sort of thing to continue, so please just get used to it and save the whining for when Katie or Gary or whomever else blows away your favorite prime time program with wall-to-wall weather excitement.

Not sure if this belongs in here or in the Navigator complaint... err thread.

My brother lives on the border of Prairie Village/Leawood and said he got a visit from two men going door to door asking people to welcome the new Navigator that you will be getting in the next 4 weeks. My brother asked about some of the problems they've been having with it and they shrugged as if they knew nothing.

He said they were not your typical hourly college students normally hired for this either, but middle aged men in suits that seemed pretty good at customer service.

I'm on the MO side and haven't seen this yet but I know it is coming and it sure makes me wonder why Time Warner would be sending customer service door to door!

Anyone else seen this?

And most importantly, anyone ever figure out if KU will be in HD today? My dollar is on them showing USC/Texas in HD and not KU.

Thank you Squeak. The term "Don't kill the messenger" comes to mind. I contribute some insider technical knowledge as a courtesy to this forum to those that seem to appreciate it. I know of at least two other engineers in the KC broadcast community that now refuse to post here because of some of the inane negative comments. I will now think twice myself.

I totally understand how easy it might be to criticize without knowledge of what goes on behind the scenes, but thoughtless negativity does nobody any good, especially the members of this forum.

First round coverage of the NCAA Tournament is staggeringly complex. There are over 200 CBS affiliates and many, if not most, get regional feeds, and sometimes dedicated feeds for the games. It's unfortunate that there are sometimes technical limitations with the HD feeds, but I seriously doubt that ANY broadcast network can do any better than CBS. HD will eventually be the universal standard but we're not there yet. Improvements to infrastructure are continuously being made. Please be patient!

Hey DogOfMadness, question for ya...

Was the second digital CBS feed put up for basketball? Or was the timing just a coincidence? While more basketball during the tourney is a big plus, there seems to be a definite quality drop in what was once the best network feed. Will the second digital channel be pulled or is it now there for good?

The HD PQ for the NCAA Basketball first and second rounds was for the most part great!

During the KU vs. Kentucky game, however, my viewing experience was plauged with pretty much constant video stuttering and "fuzzy flashes" for lack of a better term.

Did anyone else experience similar issues? Since I've never experienced this with KCTV-DT (or any other OTA channels before), I'm assuming that the problem was probably at the venue, but I'd love some external affirmation that it didn't affect only me.

Did Time Warner just change the location of the HD channels that are picked up by my QAM tuner. They used to be 14XX, the same has with the HD box, but now they are 126-8 or something like that.

Is there anyway to get a list? My Vizio with a QAM tuner is only picking up like two or three.

Just wondering what I should be able to get without a HD box.

I totally agree with Walt's comments about last night's three hour presentation of "Planet Earth" on DIscovery HD Theatre. This is truly the most spectacular HD I have seen in the three years I have had my HD set. If the rest of the 11 part series is as good as the first three hours, this should win an Emmy, not only for spectacular photography, but content as well.

UVerse sounds pretty cool, but the thing that concerns me is the lack of the sports packages. That's a pretty big gap, IMO. I'll be real curious how it compares to the D* offerings when they get their HD expansion rolled out this fall. Looks like they're both going to be leaps & bounds ahead of the cablecos in terms of HD offerings. The lead keeps changing.

If nothing else, I predict as AT&T expands UVerse availability, the cablecos will slash prices significantly, like TWC did in Everest territory, to protect their market share. Everybody should win.

It probably has to do with Master Control (at the station) giving control to the local news studio control room. A director probably requests control and still feeds the network feed out, but through SD equip since their local news isn't in HD yet. probably preferences of whom ever is running things to get ready for the newscast. Or to shift some load around at a busy top of the hour time for Master Control who is probably looking at 41 41HD 41.2 and 38.

I am excited that there is a third choice for cable in my neighborhood now to bring more competitive prices to the area. However, U-verse does have some major limitations right now.

1) The DVR can record 4 streams simultaneously, but only ONE HD stream at a time. In fact, the whole household (three boxes) only gets ONE HD stream at a time. Which means, that if I am watching HD upstairs, the downstairs box has to watch SD. Or if I am recording an HD show, I can only watch SD channels on the other boxes. No HD PIP (2 HD's).

2) There are many more HD channels available which I like, but no KCWE-HD (The CW) or inHD (the later I know is cable company owned and an improbability).

3) The internet is slower than cable unless you get the third tier elite speed which costs much more.

4) DVRs cannot yet network to the other boxes for playback. They are working on this and say they will implement it by the end of the year.

5) Not much choice for sports packages (ESPN Full Court College B-Ball is about it) and the FOX Regional Sports Networks which are subject to blackouts.

6) No CableCard compatability.

Hopefully AT&T can boost the bandwidth to allow 2 HD streams someday. I like the competition though!

I would assume that it would be PBS but I've read posts from people in other cities that indicated sometimes other networks have better (longer) guide info (ie - 7 days of programming vs. 12-24 hours of programming). It's my understanding that each broadcaster provides their own guide data (PSIP) (free of charge, of course). It's a bit annoying that my device sets its clock each time the channel is changed to whatever is being broadcast on that channel. It'd be nice to set it to something you know is right. (Probably PBS.)

I think what you might also be thinking of is the free TV Guide On Screen service. If you have equipment that can decode it (few can), it does have plenty of extra information. Guide info is a couple weeks worth. And it's probably a heck of a lot more reliable than some of the local provider's PSIP data.

I don't know who (if anyone) broadcasts the TV Guide On Screen info in the area, but it's usually the local PBS affiliate. The kicker about TVGOS: It's broadcast on the analog channels and when analog goes away in 2009 ... TVGOS will go with it.

On other thing ... I was currious about the box you pointed out that you were buying, so I did some searching on it and stumbled upon this:

Thanks for the programming guide info. I'll be interested to see if the DB2010 has the same issues as far as the clock. Since it allows you to set a single channel for the clock info, my hope is that it will stay the same. I don't think it uses TVGOS so maybe it's programming info is only coming from the PSIP broadcasts.

As far as details about the DB-2010, when USDTV went out of business they allowed resellers to upgrade their boxes with firmware that basically un-brands the box and allows them to receive OTA signals with no restrictions (which is what the non-subscription version (sold thru Walmart) of the box did). The key to buying one of these boxes is to make sure that it has in fact been flashed with the new firmware or purchase your own thumbdrive with the firmware update. One of the great things about these boxes is that they are linux-based (as such there is a pretty good argument that the firmware update should be freely distributed and people are pushing for a release of their source code under the GNU) and, thus, there is a possibility of future software enhancements. I appreciate the words of warning though.

I'd love to have a combo ATSC tuner/DVR but it seems like the only ones that you can now find (LG's LST-3410a and Sony's DHG-HDD250) are on eBay and they cost an arm and a leg.

Unfortunately, there are very few options (none of which are reasonably priced) for those that want an HD-quality DVR to record their OTA programming. I've been wondering if building my own HTPC might be the best route. I would think that you would get more bang for the buck with a HTPC than you would simply buying an overpriced used tuner/HDdvr.

edit: The DVR started working again yesterday morning (Monday April 2.)

I have the same DVR and everything worked on Monday, but I did not check on Sunday to see if it worked or not. I don't record anything for Sunday. I only watch Prison Break, 24, House, Criminal Minds, Shark, and Numbers.

Is anyone using a OTA DVR with luck here in the area? I am thinking of dropping Everest and just using OTA, but like most; LOVE the DVR

I am using two DVRs with OTA (both HD). One is in my entertainment center. It is a Sony DHG-HDD250 HD-DVR. It has OTA HD tuner, NTSC tuner, Cable QAM tuner, cable card slot, HDMI, Optical audio, etc. 250GB HD. Works great. I use it exclusively for OTA. Unfortunately, Sony does not make it anymore and ebay prices are high. I was tempted to sell mine on eBay but decided against it for now.

I also use a Mac with eyeTV Hybrid (http://www.elgato.com). Works great. It is a USB stick that has a ATSC tuner and NTSC tuner in it. The program guide comes from TitanTV. Works great too.

As a Mac guy, I am now tempted to get a Mac Mini and hang this eyeTV hybrid off of it. The mac mini comes with a remote and I can control the eyeTV with it. I can then connect the mac mini to my HDTV using DVI to HDMI cable. This is my future plan.

There is another product available called HDHomeRun. Google it. It is rather new but has both QAM and ATSC tuner. The cool thing is that it is network based. It uses ethernet. Just connect it to your home network and any PC in the house can tune to it. The software is still being developed and this is more of a hacker's dream right now.

HP is getting out of the media center market (Google HP z556 or z558). These look like entertainment equipment instead of PCs and come with NTSC and ATSC tuners built-in and a host of other features. It uses an older Pentium 4 chip instead of the new Core 2 Duo. It also uses Windows Media Center Edition - I am not really a Microsoft guy. These used to sell for $2000. They can be found now for less than $700. You do get a lot for the money if you want to put up with windows. It comes with a wireless keyboard, mouse, and a remote. It can be used as a DVR using Microsoft's program guide. No monthly fee. You could use it as a general PC too.

On the mac side, there is Mac Mini + eyeTV Hybrid. This will be a cool setup too. I personally prefer Macs.

You could built your own PC too! May be more head ache.

See my above post about HDHomeRun also.

Is anyone using a OTA DVR with luck here in the area? I am thinking of dropping Everest and just using OTA, but like most; LOVE the DVRI bought a Gateway PC (3 GHz, Pentium IV) with MS XP Media Center Edition 2005 for pretty cheap. I added an analog and then a digital (Vboxx Cats Eye) tuner card. I've been recording TV for several months now ... so far so good.

Right now my viewing is restricted to the PC since my wife refuses to agree to move the PC to the living room. However, an Xbox 360 can connect to content on a home network as a high definition 'Media Center Extender' ... I'm planning to get one this summer. Then I'll be able to view from the living room and still be able to transcode and burn DVD's from the office where the PC is and all the content is stored. Also ... that setup would enable someone to watch recorded TV in the living room and someone else to surf the web in the office. If the computer was in the living room, we'd be limited to one display device.

... I suppose another option would be to just buy another cheap XP Media Center PC ... maybe you can get them even cheaper now that Vista is out. Or ... maybe not at all?

Phillip Swan's TV Predictions on the HDTV Magazine site today notes that only 3 major league baseball teams are not offering at least some of their games in HD this year. Of course, the Royals are one of them. The other 2, according to Swan, are the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals.

The good news, according to Swan is "The Royals next year will be carried by Fox 'Sports Midwest which is expected to show their games in high-def."

It had previously been announced that Fox Sports Midwest would handle the Royals games beginning in 2008, but to my knowledge nothing has been said officially by them regarding carrying the games in HD. Swan does not give a source for his information, but his column is usually pretty reliable.

He points out that the Royals telecasts are currently handled by the Royals-owned RSTN. Actually, I believe they contract with Metro Sports to handle the technical aspects of their telecasts. Comcast carries most of the current Royals games on the Fox Sports Net channel, but it is my understanding that the Royals simply contract with them to carry their games. Beginning next year, Fox Sports Midwest will actually be responsible for all aspects of the Royals games, including the technical origination.

I think it is unlikely that all of the Royals games in the 2008 season will be carried in HD, but some of them would be nice.
There must be some reason that Comcast has set aside a vacant channel labeled Fox Sports HD. There is nothing on it now 99 percent of the time, although a few weeks back they did carry a St. Louis hockey game in HD on it.
Lets hope Phillip Swan knows what he's talking about.

One other aside. Someone, in commenting on Swan's article, said tongue in cheek that the current non-HD network carrying the Washington National games "uses cameras bought from a garage sale in 1990. Absolutely pathetic."
From the grainy look of most of the RSTN telecasts, I wonder if Metro Sports bought their technical equipment at that same sale. The camera work is usually pretty shoddy as well.

Just signed up for AT&T U-verse service today with free installation and 2 months free. Installing FRI APR 13 and can't wait. Hello!

There's the series 3 TIVO. Works just great for OTA HD recording. It will also do analog recording OTA or cable. And digital cable with cable cards from the cable company. Or any combination of the above.

Would you mind letting us know what services you're getting, and what your monthly bill will be?
Do they let you choose premium channels a la carte?
What's their monthly rate for extra HD DVR's?

Any ideas (anyone???) how their DVR compares to the 8300HD?

U-Verse isn't available in my area (Leawood), and I can't tell when it will be.

Keep us updated on your experience!!!

Thanks!

Yeah but you still have to pay for the monthly service - what a ripoff? I have only OTA and don't plan on giving money to another company for service. My Sony DVR is working well and I paid $499 for it 1.5 years ago. I also use my Mac based DVR for HD recording too. I am waiting for a faster Mac mini to come out before I make that my permanent solution.

Actually, the Royals' network, RSTN, IS responsible for game production. Metro Sports, FSMW on Comcast, Dish, etc... are all just contracted broadcast rights holders. Metro Sports only produced the post-game show in house; however, after RSTN signed the 10 year contract with Fox Sports, Metro decided they wouldn't do a post-game show in house this season and, frankly, I don't blame them much.

My beef with RSTN is that they are only showing 14 out of 162 games OTA. Basically, they're saying if you are a Royals' fan you have to purchase cable or satellite for $60+/month. I'm sorry but that is just wrong. They don't have to broadcast 100+ games OTA (which is what you get via cable/sat) but, seriously, 14 games is an insult to local fans, particularly those in Jackson County that just coughed up $150 million+ to renovate Kauffman for the Royals.

I just hooked up our new Hisense DB-2010 ATSC tuner last night (which is fabulous, btw) and noticed that Ch 62-1 and the Ch. 19 sub-channels (19-2 & 19-3) are the only 3 channels that do not have programming info available. Is this normal? Are those of you with other ATSC tuners pulling in programming info from either Ch. 62 or the Ch. 19 sub-channels?

Since it's free the first 2 months anyway, I ordered the "Everything" package which is called U400. It's over 300 digital cable channels plus digital music, and includes the sports package, ALL movie channels, & high speed elite internet. I also got HD package ($10 extra but free for 1 year). Got them to waive the $50 installation fee. 3 HD boxes (1 HD-DVR) which will network to the other boxes later this year, which is why U-verse won't let you add an extra DVR at all because, in effect, all the boxes will be a shared DVR. Premiums can be chosen a la carte but they are $14 each (HBO, MAX, SHO, TMC, ENC, STZ). I pay $20/mo x 2 mo, then $119/mo x 10 mo, then $129/mo after that. I may drop down to the U300 or U200 package if I dont end up watching the movie channels or sports all that much.

I will let you know how the Motorola VIP DVR compares to the SA Explorer 8300HD that I am taking back to TWC soon. Limited to ONE HD stream per household (4 SD) now, but AT&T is increasing bandwidth from 25 Mbps to 40 Mbps late summer to early fall which will allow for at least 2 if not 3 HD streams + internet simultaneously.

The Motorola VIP 1216 DVR has 256meg of DDR, a Seagate 7200rpm 160 GB drive, marvel ethernet controller, 1 meg flash chip, and Sigma SMP8630 MPEG-4 processor. The boxes use Microsoft's IPTV v1.1 platform software. AT&T is adding new channels almost weekly. One Motorola VIP 1216 (DVR) for the main TV and the VIP 1200 for all other TVs. The 1216 will contain a 160GB hard drive with the capacity to record both SD and HD content encoded in (MPEG-4) H.264 format. The 1200s will be diskless, but will be able to stream content from the 1260 towards the end of the year when the whole-home DVR is launched.

Don't know where the VRAD box is in my neighborhood, but it must be within 3000 feet of my house. They are graffiti resistant and quiet.

Do you actually get 62.1? I must be the only one that can't get it, other than on 47.62.

I have the Wallmart USDTV set top box as a second tuner for my tv, so I'll have to check when I get home if those channels get PSIP information.

Like Bommai, my main tuner is a Sony DHG-HDD250 and I love it, other than the fact it only has one tuner.
I'll probably build a HPTC box for when I buy a tv for the bedroom. I thought NVidia had a DualTV Tuner card that would work, but it's only analog and is already discontinued. The HDHomeRun system looks interesting.

Yeah, 62.1 comes in fine. I just don't get any programming info from them. I emailed KSMO this morning about it.

Since my earlier post I have periodically received the programming info for 19-2 and 19-3 but I have a new problem where every time I tune to PBS it wipes out all of the programming info which my STB downloaded from the other channels (including Ch 19's own programming info). I can't figure it out. If I just skip Ch 19 and don't tune to it. The programming info from the other channels is fine, but once I tune to Ch. 19 it zaps the programming info. Suggestions? Thoughts? I was pretty excited to see how well the program guide works with this box, but this problem with PBS is not good.

The analog PBS channel 19 provides the programming info for TVGOS as discussed earlier, so your Hisense box must have the ability to get programing info from multiple sources.
Can't you just remove channel 19 from your channel list? On my DVR, I have all the digital channels top on the list (both on the TVGOS guide and using the channel up/down button, and the analog channels below since we con't watch those channels, unless a digital channel goes off the air temporarilly.

Thanks for the reply. The Hisense DB2010 does not use have an analog (NTSC) tuner so I know it's not pulling anything from the PBS analog (or any other analog channel) channel.

Also, I don't know if you're using the term TVGOS as a generic term or specifically referring to TV Guide On Screen (found at http://www.vgi.com), but the Hisense STB does not use the branded TVGOS guide. It's my understanding that it just pulls the programming info from the PSIP signal. I've posted this issue in the separate forum for the Hisense DB2010 box in the event it is an issue specific to my STB. Does anyone else that gets programming info from the PSIP signal have problems with the programming info periodically disappearing?

I could remove Ch. 19 from our program list, the problem is we watch it a LOT. I might try removing it though just to see if that eliminates the problem. THanks for the reply. If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm all (rabbit) ears. <grin>

EDIT: I tried removing Ch. 19 from the channel list and if I do so, the STB will download each channel's programming info from that particular channel as you view it but, of course, this requires you to visit each channel briefly in order to have a completed programming guide. However, as soon as I tune back to any of the 3 PBS channels they immediately wipe out all of the programming info for ALL of the channels. Clearly there is either an error in the way Ch. 19 sends their PSIP signal or there is some kind of incompatibility b/t Ch. 19's signal and the Hisense (USDTV) DB-2010 STB (or my box specifically). Thoughts? Suggestions? If we never watched Ch. 19 it wouldn't be too much of an issue, but PBS Kids is the one thing our daughter likes.

WOW!!! Thanks for all of the info...it's extremely helpful. I'll be interested in finding out how the DVR stacks up. I could live with 1 HD stream for now, and would love the networked DVR since it seems that I never want to watch a show in the same room where I recorded it. Setting up the same recurring recordings on 3 DVR's is a pain.

Looks like you're getting EVERYTHING except digital phone for about $130/month. I'm paying around $180/month for RR, digital phone and cable with 3 HD DVR's, but no premium channels. Hopefully, if nothing else, U-Verse will drive down TWC's outrageous prices.

Enjoy!

I'm sorry, when you said channel 19, I thought you meant analog 19, not digital 19.1.
TVGOS info is from the analog PBS channel.
I may be wrong, but the way different channels output PSIP data varies between stations. I only use the US Digital OTA tuner very occasionaly now so I don't remember for sure, but I'm sure some channels never had any PSIP data.
I was able to get the listings for 19.1, 19.2 and 19.3 but not 62.1. I also don't get PSIP listings for 4.1, 5.1, 50.1 and 50.2. Changing to 19.1 didn't do anything to the rest of the listings but I do remember listings disapearing for no reasons sometimes. I think the US Digital box gets sets it's time from 19.1.

Time Warner and NBC: Deal or no deal?
Did you see that announcement in Monday's Star that Time Warner Cable “may be required” to stop carrying NBC and HGTV? What was that all about?

In a nutshell, it was about making the government happy while the area's largest cable operator and the owner of KSHB-TV hammered out a new long-term agreement.

By law, Time Warner must give the public 30 days' notice when any cable channels are in jeopardy of being dropped because the two sides can't come to terms. But the terse, tiny-texted “Legal Notice” ad placed rather prominently on page A-6 raised more questions than it answered.

So here's the backstory.

Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co. , which owns both KSHB and KMCI-TV (“38 the Spot”), has been in negotiations with Connecticut-based Time Warner Cable over “retransmission consent.” That's a broadcaster's legal right to charge a cable operator for carrying the station. While the law makes it sound very down-home and local, in reality most “retrans” deals are tussles between giant media companies (not unlike the one I work for).

These negotiations can turn into knock-down-drag-outs, as the broadcaster tries to get as much “value” for its stations as it can. Earlier this year, the Fox affiliate in Spokane cut its feed to Time Warner, affecting about 25,000 subscribers, because its terms weren't being met. And in late February, Sinclair Broadcast Group, which has dozens of stations, threatened to pull them off every Comcast system in the country, affecting 3 million homes in all, but eventually the two sides struck a deal.

And that seems the likely outcome here. Damon Porter of Time Warner Cable in Kansas City said it was “not likely” that the worst-case scenario would come true, and Craig Allison, general manager of KSHB and KMCI, agreed their corporate lawyers will work this out. The contract actually expired late last year and the two sides have agreed to keep extending it every 30 days. (Which means you may see that “Legal Notice” again in about a month.)

Scripps owns not only TV stations but a number of cable channels, including HGTV, which also doesn't have an agreement with Time Warner. If past history is any guide, both KSHB and HGTV will be settled at the same time.

We, down in New Orleans, are having a time with this with Cox cable. Our NBC affiliate, WDSU, is owned Hearst Argyle broadcasting. There Analog and HD transmitters were lost in Hurricane Katrina. They were still avaible to the public, largely because they were both on Cox cable. Hearst tried to "hold up" the cable Co. to get paid for the HD feed. Cox balked at this and the HD signal was removed from the cable. That was last October, and there's no word when of if it will ever return. We also had no HD feeds for CBS or FOX. But the CBS problem was resolved because Cox said "either we get both feeds, or we'll remove the analog signal, as well as a 24 local new chanel. It took another 30 day extension, but someone caved and we finally got CBS HD on the cable. So, these little cable/broadcaster tifts happen from time to time.

I'm new to Time Warner service, having just moved from Lenexa (Everest - pretty awesome aside from their ISP speeds) and into a house with my girlfriend in KCK where the only service is TW. I liked Everest's HD lineup, never had pixelization, and only really had a problem with their pricing and internet access speeds. I also liked that Everest allowed me to carry a basic phone line with no features or long distance.

Now, since moving to KCK and getting in bed with Time Warner, I feel deprived. I do a TON of work from home, and have to connect to home from work, so the larger upload and download speeds at cheaper prices than Everest help alot. Aside from their internet service, which is considerably faster than Everest's, I have many problems with Time Warner, in no particular order:

1) They're the bigger company, servicing areas nationwide, and they can't provide us with a more diverse HD channel lineup and better service? Everest has 5 or 7 more HD channels, although their HD service is more expensive. However, I never once had a problem with pixelization on Everest HD, even during bigtime sporting events. With TW, my housewarming/SuperBowl party was RUINED because we couldn't watch it in HD on my 55" Hitachi DLP due to pixelization. I called TW and was on the phone for an hour DURING THE GAME and they claimed there was no issue. I guess that's why my neighbors had the same problem. I relegated this to the 'oversold, oversaturated demand in our market' wastebin. Since then, several KU basketball games have experienced the same problems.

2) Their pricing is ridiculously more expensive for their package deals that include TV, ISP, and Phone. I know if they'd let me remove the home phone features and long distance that my bill would be about the same as Everest. But, guess what? If I were in a competitive area, meaning an area serviced by Everest, I'd be able to get the same $190/mo (before taxes & fees) service that I receive now for $90/mo. That'd be under the $110 I was paying with Everest month-to-month. On top of that, Time Warner charges more for month-to-month service, which is understandable, but their only other option is a 15 month contract. Where does this company come from? This isn't a cell phone contract, and I won't sign anything longer than 12 months for those, anyway!

3) The phone line loses service when the power goes out. WHAT? Isn't that illegal according to the Kansas Public Utilities Commission (or whatever it's called here in KS)? I have a landline for safety, but it's not so safe if my power fluctuates or goes out, huh?

4) The technicians are _the_worst_. On installation day after we moved in, I had a technician grab the HD-DVR from stock on his truck, then tell me that the unit was defective and that I'd have to take it to the local office for an exchange. WHAT? He drove off before I could recover from the shock. It took three exchanges that Saturday and four hours on the phone with their CSRs to figure out that the initial programming on their end was faulty and had to be removed & re-keyed. On a repeat visit for phone outage while the power was out due to a snowstorm, the TW technician claimed there were wiring problems inside the house, even though all of our equipment has perfect S/N ratios as measured by their head end. This house was professionally wired by a union electrician for TV and PC networking. Whatever. Then I found out that their phone equipment doesn't function while the power is off. I have since placed a commercial 1500VA UPS on the phone and HD-DVR to avoid this junk in the future.

If I had _any_ other choice, I'd be done with Time Warner in a heartbeat. However, sadly, I don't. So, who else is nonplussed with TW's HD lineup and service?

I have them for phone and internet and think it is a decent deal (about $60 a month). I use Dish for the TVs. Now I am in a competitive area, but I know people who are not and they say the same as you. I have never checked during a power outage, but the modem does have a battery built in so the phone can be used. I figure they are going to overcharge in areas with no competition and make all they can because they know the competition is coming and they will then have to compete. Good Luck!

I had Time Warner back in 2004 in a duplex I lived in near 87th Street Parkway and Mauer Road (Behind the K-Mart/Sears Grand) and we constantly had issues with our internet service going out (when the cable would get fuzzy) and they would come out, jiggle the wires around in the cable box, and then say nothing is wrong and leave.

I moved in 2005 to a new apartment that had Everest, and never had a single issue except one night my cable modem was knocked out by lightning (on a Saturday Night) and of course their office is closed on Sunday so I didn't get a new modem until Monday morning, but I loved Everest.

Last month I moved into another new apartment and they only service available was Time Warner, so against my wishes we got TWC and 1. Paying for installation and activating existing jacks ticked me off, and 2.) Their high prices. But I got word from a friend at work that this new service called AT&T U-Verse was launching and it was available in my area, so I've switched to it this week. I get all the tv channels (about 600 by the end of the month), movie channels, HD, DVR (that can be controlled via the internet) and 2 cable boxes for about $135/month. That also includes the upgrade to the DSL Internet to 3.0 M down/ 1 M upload speed (which was about the same we had with TWC)

Just wondering if anyone else is having problems with MPEG-4 on NBC. Recorded the HD channel Leno tonight and it is in 4:3 and not high def. Watching Conan right now and it is not in HD and it not full screen either. I am viewing from D* I have tuned to other national HD channels and they come through fine.

We live in KC north and got so fed up with TW that we opted to go back to OTA rather than give TW any more of our money. TW's one advantage is that you can get an HD DVR with no initial investment. If D* or Dish would figure this out, they'd have loads of people jumping off the TW ship. Most people aren't willing to shell out $100+ for an HD DVR that they then still have to pay monthly fees to 'rent.'

Our OTA signal is great (HD quality if noticeably better than what TW piped in) but we desparately miss the DVR. I just can't bring myself to drop $500 on a used Sony DHG-HDD250 to have the same funtionality with OTA content.

I'm hoping AT&T's U-verse will make its way to the Northland, but I'm not holding my breath.

That is good news about TWC finally adding ESPN2.

On a separate note, I didn't notice this previously posted but I just noticed that the Missouri legislature passed a law to grant cable licenses at the state level rather than the current method today to grant cable licenses at the municipality level. This is to go into effect August 28, 2007. Kansas already has a similar law in place and they have more competition thus lower bills for consumers where more than one operator does business.

http://www.senate.mo.gov/07info/BTS_Web/Bill.aspx?SessionType=R&BillID=4857

This will hopefully speed up other cable operators coming to Missouri, especially ATT/Uverse. A friend of mine works for Uverse and says it is much better than what TWC has to offer, especially picture clarity.

Good News about all those channels!
Somebody might tell the Kansas City Star that so they can report it.
I hope soon Comcast hook ups a deal with ESPNU so Comcast here can added it!
Which would you Comcast people want Comcast to add here?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I went back over about the last six months and didn't find it. Does Everest have QAM channels that can be received without a cable box? I am interested in building a MythTV PVR for my parents who already subscribe to Everest HDTV. Will I be able to use a card that supports QAM256 and QAM64 to receive the Everest HD channels?

(My parents have a cable box that receives the HDTV, but as I understand it, no capture card can handle HDTV output from a set-top box. They can only deal with un-encrypted, encoded streams from the cable company.)

Thanks a bunch!

I have AT&T U-Verse and I wouldn't exactly say it is "Ready for Prime Time" yet. Their local HD channels seem to have lip sync issues and I've noticed KSHB-DT has had an encoder problem several times this week. I'm still glad I got U-Verse and the SD channels look fantastic even on my HDTV. When I watch local channels in HD I still use the OTA antenna.

Has the FOX-4 channel bug moved to the left a little bit? I can see the whole thing now on my CRT-RP Hitachi. It used to be that I could see only about half of it (cut off on the right). The other possibility is that the E* 622 software update changed the amount of overscan, but I haven't noticed any other channels displaying differently.

(Obviously a slow-news day!) :p

I sent an email to KSMO 62 a week or two ago to let them know that there was something wrong with their PSIP signal because they were the only channel for which I could not receive programming data. I never received a response, but a couple of days ago, for the first time ever, I started finally getting programming data for Ch. 62. Anyone else have the same experience?

Bongohawk, are you using component or HDMI (mine is component)? If I could just remember to do it, I could check this on my other TV (LCD) OTA. Like I said, slow news day.

On another subject, are you having any issues with KMBC 9-1? I'm showing 100% signal strength, but I had a lot of lost signal messages on my recording of "Lost" last night. I think others are having OTA problems with L4.03, but I think it's mostly OTA not working at all.

As of Monday morning the outdated and unreliable equipment inherited from Sinclair broadcasting was replaced with much more robust system. I have gotten at least 2 viewer calls indicating improved performance. One had never gotten audio on 62.1 and another had never gotten good program tables. Hope this improves your viewing experience.

I wonder if KCTV will participate. I have a Sony HD-DVR DHG-HDD250 and it relies on the analog TVGOS from KCPT. However, by Feb 2009, we need a digital source. I wonder if the TVGOS software in my DVR will be upgraded to support this.

That's very interesting...today's Star TV section has an ad for TW that specifically mentions Starz HD. They're trying to get new customers by advertising a channel that they don't even offer yet. That seems very suspicious to me...

Yesterday I was watching a recorded episode of Til Death from a couple weeks ago and it had the Old FOX 4 bug all the way in the lower right. I then watch last weeks episode of Til Death and the bug was much higher, but more interestingly I noticed the bug is actually completely different. It is not as white and more subtle. So not only did they move the bug up, they created a completely new Fox4 bug.

I'm fairly new to HDTV so forgive me if anything sounds off. I currently have DirecTV, no HD yet as I'm waiting for more stations before I shell out the $.

My problem has been getting DTV OTA. I'm using a medium sized directional rooftop antenna w/ a preamp. It was on the house when I moved in so it's probably 5-10 years old. I ran new cable to it, pointed it (the channels I'm hoping for are basically between 300-320 degrees compass heading) and hooked it up to the antenna input on my HDTV.

I've been really dissappointed so far. I can pick up only a couple of DTV channels, 5.1 (CBS), 19.x (PBS) and 29.1 (CW). I'd like to get get FOX, NBC and ABC but haven't had any luck. I've tried some different orientations & such but can't get anything else. In fact, I got the three DTV stations I'm getting now with just an indoor antenna.

My question is how come I can receive CBS, which according to antenna web I'm 17 miles from, but can't receive FOX, NBC or ABC, which are 18, 15 and 11 miles away, respectively. Is CBS signal strength just that much better? All are fairly close in compass heading...CBS-306, FOX-305, NBC-290, ABC-317.

Any help would be much appreciated
