njaguar 08-28-07, 11:14 AM It has a built in tuner. When I did the auto install, I selected Antenna. I was just looking at the manual, and it described "Cable" different than I thought, and am trying that now. It's already found over 30 channels, so I'm guessing this is what I wanted all along. Thanks :) (No digital yet, but I'm sure if they exist, this is where they will be)
[edit] Nice, 72 Digital, 75 analog have been found so far, without a tuner box. Excellent! :) Hopefully some of those digital will be some of the local HD channels.
Thanks guys, and sorry for not reading the manual closer before posting.
dlnester 08-28-07, 05:03 PM Time Warner removed ESPN Classic in Omaha a couple months ago in much the same fashion, not sure what they got in its place.

Let me know if you can get TNT HD. I can get all the other locals, but a few months ago TNT HDstopped working

needforspeed 08-28-07, 09:31 PM Hi everyone! I have been a lurker on this site for a while now and finally got signed up today. I'm in Overland Park.
I was wondering, does anybody know of a listing describing all of the free HD channels in the area, both over-the-air and channels you can pick up off of a non-digital cable subscription? A website, PDF, anything? The first post in this thread seems a little out of date and doesn't have a lot of info and there's no way I can wade through all the posts in this thread searching for info. (Already tried search and didn't work out too well.)
I have time warner cable (not digital) but I pick up some of the local channels in HD. I've read that cable companies sometimes provide digital channels and don't advertise it, so I'm sure that's what TW is doing here. However, the channels on my TV and the numbers on tvguide.com for cable or OTA don't match up. I'm having a difficult time remembering what channel number belongs to ABC/CBS/NBC/etc, so I'm looking for something I can print out or pull up in a browser to reference channel numbers to stations. The guide built into my TV doesn't work for cable channels, only OTA.
If there is not a resource of the kind I'm looking for, then I would be willing to make one and share with everyone if I could get people to help gather the information. I wouldn't mind having a simple website with all the HD OTA channels in the area with their channel numbers, call letters, network, etc, and also the ones basic cable customers can pick up from time warner/everest/comcast.
TIA for any info you might be willing to share!

bigitybiggs 08-29-07, 01:01 AM Quick heads up to any twc customers with a hd dvr box, don't think that this has been discussed today but when they added the new program guide to the box there was a error in the upgrade. It causes all the programs that you recorded to be lost and the box will not record or pause, rewind live tv. I did a online chat with a csr tonight from their webpage and he said there are two options 1 they can reformat it over the phone which they tried and it didn't work for me or they claim they are working on fixing the error which will bring back the shows that you lost and allow the box to record again. Just thought I would post that I don't know if they have added the new guide to everyone in the kc area but if you have a show that you don't want to lose I would suggest moving it off the box if that is possible
I did some checking....

I know Cox, Qwest and Cablevision are in Omaha, but I was not aware TW was in Omaha also. Where are their franchise boundaries? (TW is in Lincoln, I believe)
Has anyone tried the Kowatec antenna yet? There was a pretty good review in HT Mag. I think this could potentially solve the multidirectional issues I am having. Here is the site if want more information. http://www.kowatec.com/
Jayhawk 08-29-07, 09:17 AM Well, it appears that TW is going to go ahead and roll out Navigator, despite that it appears to only be about 8% functional.
On the way to work this morning, I noticed some AT&T trucks working in Leawood, so I stopped and asked them if they were working on a U-Verse rollout. They smiled and said "yes."
So, it appears that U-Verse may be available sooner rather than later for my part of town. Does anyone have any updated reviews of their service? I'd love to have an alternative, and at this time, anything seems to be better than Navigator, so I'd love any feedback.
mgsports 08-29-07, 11:10 AM What is Navigator? The kind Car or their Interactive TV Service?

sneaky snooper 08-29-07, 08:53 PM And for what its worth, KMBC is now passing ABC-HD through again! According to Jim is now airing in HD :-D
Is anyone else having trouble with ESPNHD on Time Warner? It is coming through completely garbled for me, and has been for the last couple days.

I was watching the college football show on espnhd and it was okay for the time I was watching it. I would record it for a while to check for sure but I still can't record because of the stupid new channel guide. By the way has anyone with the hd dvr with twc had any luck with them getting the dvr to work with the new guide.
I know this isn't local, but I figured it would be of interest to most of the folks here. Hay TI, any chance we could get oh so good electronics p*rn (pics) of all the KMBC equipment? That would be sweet!!

Be Warned!! - Lenexa, Kansas off 87th Street, Navigator Uploaded on Tuesday the 28th - WIPED EVERYTHING CLEAN!
We have the 8300HD DVR. Lo and behold when we hit List to watch a recorded show everything was blank, all the shows we had recorded were erased and our Series Manager with all the shows we had built up over the last two years was completely blank. It was as if a brand new box had been delivered because everything we had saved was gone. This was really surprising because I had actually read the materials that arrived in advance of the Navigator roll-out (please don't tell anyone) and they never mentioned the possibility that everything would be erased. They did mention that shows not currently airing would need to be reset. If we had at least been warned that everything could be erased then we could have taken steps to minimize the inconvenience.
Customer service says it's only a limited problem, yeah right I imagine that's the default upgrade to wipe it clean. But only a small % of subscribers will complain and fewer will drop. I'm sure an executive somewhere gave the okay, do the upgrade, wipe em clean, and give people the run around and a $10 credit when they call. The arrogance of TWCKC is something to behold, but what do you really expect from cable company because obviously our time isn't worth anything.
I do keep reminding myself that they're only tv shows and not something really important but it sure is annoying...

Lynam99 08-31-07, 12:10 PM The Navigator installation wiped my 8300 clean and I can't record new programs. The first TW CSR advised that it would take about 30 minutes to restore everything. I called back after 2 hours and a new CSR advised that it would take at least 24 hours. It seems like the bug fix did not work and now they are trying to buy time.

Tuesday the Navigator install wiped everything from my 8300HD, TW said it would reload the series manager list in 24 hours. Called back Thursday to check and was told they'd recover the series manager list, got home from work and it had reverted back to Passport so we lost everything we'd saved since Tuesday, and all the shows I'd manually entered to rebuild the series manager list.
Thursday night another csr said they could restore the recorded shows but not the series manager list...what!!! A day later I'm stuck with Passport (which works great) but I don't want to save anything because they'll wipe it clean again for the third time when they do send Navigator my way. I'm sure some TW techie is laughing as he randomly throws switches wiping out DVR's across the town.
Hey I did get a $10 credit the csr said that's all they could do, I should send them a bill for my wasted time. The utter incompetence of this rollout is astounding and they want me to switch to TW for my phone service, hello 911, 911.......
I have the same box and still can't get the record or rewind fuctions to work. Did they get it working for you. They tried for almost 30 mins and still nothing they were suppose to call me back yesterday and give me a fix but nothing.
Functionality was actually pretty good probably because I was expecting the worst. Just TW has erased everything on the DVR two times and now I have Passport so they're working on a third time when Navigator reloads. I'm sure when they get Navigator back on my DVR it will be buggy and won't work.:)
Oh yeah I'm still waiting for the "30 minute callback" after 2 days!
huskergreg 08-31-07, 08:43 PM I just got off the phone with TWC and they told me it will probably be the middle of next week before they have restored the recordings on the DVR boxes that have been updated with Navigator. When I asked about getting a credit for the time I can't use the DVR they offered free on-demand movies for this weekend.
By the way, when I look at the DVR "list" page it shows the DVR as being 100% full, which I assume is why I can't record new programs. It probably was 100% full before the upgrade.
Lynam99 09-01-07, 09:35 AM TWKC advised that they couldn't restore my 8300 after Navigator wiped it clean. They are scheduled to install a new box on Monday. I can understand a few bugs in a rollout of new software but to have the software destroy the core functionality of a DVR is amazing.
Anyone else having issues with ESPNHD (1497) via TWC today?
It's been out for a few hours now.
Just wondering

dlnester 09-02-07, 11:56 AM Skid-
I was having that trouble a couple days ago with a few HD channels. I had to unplug my 8300 DVR and then plug it back in, let it reboot, and all was good with HD channels.
dlnester 09-02-07, 11:59 AM I also was checking out the new Navigator page:
http://www.timewarnercable.com/KansasCity/Products/Cable/MDN/MDN_Intro.html
and it appears my 8300 came from TWC as a new install already programmed with it. It is pretty nice when working correctly.
dlnester 09-02-07, 11:33 PM Just an FYI: ESPN Classic has been removed from the Time Warner Cable ANALOG lineup as channel 35 is now static, as nothing replaced it. ESPN Classic is available on Digital Cable now.
Monday afternoon, all of the KSHB channels (Ch. 41, Ch. 38, the HD channels and WeatherPlus) went off the air due to a transmitter problem.
dlnester 09-03-07, 03:43 PM Actually Time Warner Cable is having trouble.
Channel 5 - Access
Channel 8 - KMCI
Channel 13 - KSHB
Channel 20 - Metro Weather
Channel 30 - Metro Sports
They are all off-the-air right now. BUT... KSHB-DT is on the air, as well as Weather Plus on digital cable.
Since we learned last time that all of the lines from KSHB/KMCI to the transmitter run over the Time Warner Cable fiber lines I would imagine the two problems are related.
mgsports 09-03-07, 06:06 PM Oh you don't have Digital Cable because if you did you wouldn't have any static channels because the channel 35 isn't their at the moment.
What would they replace it with Big ten Network, move KSHB Weather Plus their or so on?
ryu3000 09-03-07, 08:32 PM What channels are on the air in KC? I live in the Plaza/Westport area. I own a Sony 30" CRT. Thinking about getting a cheap antenna to watch a few HD channels.
dlnester 09-03-07, 09:28 PM mgsports-
I have digital cable. Even with digital cable, channels 2-77 are still analog. Sure, if you use the cable box you won't get static, but my old tv in the bedroom only gets 2-77 and that is when I checked 35 on it and got static.
jeffdbs 09-03-07, 10:08 PM Welcome ryu3000. :) All of Kansas City television broadcasters 4,5,9,16,19,29,38,41,50 and 62 are now broadcasting digital over the air.

jeffdbs 09-03-07, 10:41 PM Thanks! What kind of cheap Walmart antenna do you think works ok?
An indoor VHF/UHF rabbit antenna may do the job. Better would be an attic/outdoor VHF/UHF old-fashion television antenna. Along with running RG-6 shielded coax cable between the television and the antenna.
mgsports 09-04-07, 08:52 AM You have to manly delete 35 or have the TV do an automatic scan to get rid of it. If you have 78 showing to it is Static to. Some how the TWCKC Digital Preview channel is fuzz but still comes in. On some of the Static channels you might here some Music in the background.

If you're on the plaza, you wont need an attic antenna. I'm in midtown and my $15 RCA VHF/UHF antenna picks up everything with ease.
olathebob 09-04-07, 11:06 AM Ever since Channel 9 has begun doing their news in HD, I've noticed a lot of pixellation during the news that was not there before. I don't see it on any other channel. I called Comcast and they said it's nothing on their end. Perhaps technicalitallian is aware of this and can comment?
bphisig 09-04-07, 12:55 PM Did anyone have trouble with ESPN2HD during the Missouri/Illinois game on Saturday afternoon? It was during the same time that ESPNHD was completely down. I called TWC and they said it was a system issue, but a northlander friend of mine on TWC said he was having no issues with ESPN2HD at all.
I had severe blocking, and it was only viewable sporadically all the way through yesterday. This morning, everything seemed to be working flawlessly. I tried rebooting multiple times and nothing fixed it.

We appologize for this. As with any new facility, there'll be bugs. We traced the problem down to a new, malfunctioning upconverter and a bad ASI to SMPTE310 converter at the transmitter just this AM. I've been watching for about 3 hours with no blocking. Hopefully, we've got it solved.......TI
bongohawk 09-05-07, 01:52 PM technicalitalian,
This is kind of random question. but does the sports department have the equipment to pull down HD feeds from HD channels like ESPNHD? The reason I ask is I noticed last night they showed a clip from the MU vs IU game, which was broadcasted in HD on ESPNHD and noticed it was pulled from the regular ESPN SD feed. Does it have to do with disk space or is that piece of equipment not up and running or not in existence at the station?
ryu3000 09-05-07, 04:10 PM Yes you are right. I just checked my tv manual. My tv came from the digital tuner or non digital tuner days. Thank you

Thanks, TI, I had noticed this, too. The news looks great, BTW, just a little too much "background motion" for my taste, though. (I guess you have to do something to make the local news more interesting.) ;)

also when will 9 be able to run tape delayed HD (Eg, the View?)
I continue to be unimpressed with KMBC's HD news. Why is the intro stretched? Can they do anything in HD that is recorded? The video from the field often looks worse than that on 4 or 41.

Now if you will saying when Comcast was adding something that would be News to us.
FrugalRacer 09-07-07, 10:14 AM 9's continious burping on Directv is just plain bad :(
Is that audio burping? I wasn't sure if it was a problem with KMBC or with my new splitter.
The audio from KMBC "stutters" on me rather frequently. Is anyone else having that problem?

Did everyone who got switched from Passport to Navigator lose all of their DVR recordings, or just an unlucky few?
Was TWC ever able to recover any of the deleted recordings or lost series schedule settings for you?

I'm also having audio stutters, but yesterday (thurs) it seemed much better. I watch KMBC news now exclusively because of HD.
CosmoNut 09-07-07, 03:30 PM I've got to say that I'm looking forward to when KMBC has more than just in-studio cameras, graphics, and weather maps in HD -- and I'm not convinced that the weather maps are all truly HD and properly aspect ratioed. I think once a majority of packages, sports highlights, and Chopper 9's feed are HD, KMBC's news is going to be beautiful!

My DVR did not survive the Navigator upgrade. The csr tried but could not get it to function. So, I went to exchange it.
My other problems have been with the new box. In the past 2 weeks, 3 reboots: 2 for loss of HD channels, 1 for loss of surround sound (just had stereo.)
LiveLite 09-09-07, 08:58 PM technicalitalian,
I am no longer able to receive KMBC-DT on my Samsung SIRT-151 STB via OTA. I use this set top box to drive my Epson PowerLite LCD projector. I have no trouble receiving KMBC-DT on my PC using a Hauppauge WinTv-HVR1600 tuner card and my neighbor has no problem on his LG LCD display with the integrated tuner.
When I tune to 'channel' 7, the set top box displays that it detects 9-1 and 9-2. Then, instead of displaying the video, I see a splash of green and then the LCD projector diaplays that the STB is no longer sending a signal to it. The tuner is locked on the station and the only way to change the 'channel' is to disconnect the antenna lead and then change the station. I can receive all other OTA stations.
I have removed 'channel' 7 from my STB memory so I don't accidentally lock up.
I know that this STB is 'old', but should not all STB's be able to receive all the digital signals? Has there been a change to the ATSC format that is not compatible with the 1st and 2nd generation STB's? I was an early adopter.
Thanks for your time and the News broadcasts look great (on my PC)!

I have the the same problem with my Dish Network 622 OTA receiver and my Sony OTA receiver. KMBC DT-07 locks up both OTA digital receivers. I am probably wrong but I wonder if the PSIP stream is corrupt?

Jeff, I had to remove 9-1 from my 622 (after 9-2 was added) and manually add channel 7 back in. The 622 then recognized 9-1 and 9-2, and everything has been fine since. I think you're right - the PSIP changed somehow and confused the 622.
Brad
My Samsung T151 and H260 receivers are receiving KMBC OTA fine. I did notice several days ago that I had to enter the actual channel number (7) instead of the virtual number (9) for a couple of days, but that has cleared up. My Samsung T451 is also fine on KMBC via QAM.
dlnester 09-10-07, 04:32 PM Is their any programming on KMBC DT 9-2 ?
Bradtothebone 09-10-07, 06:02 PM Not that I've seen - just pretty 480i color bars.

LiveLite 09-10-07, 10:53 PM Thanks dbdoc, jeffdbs, Bradtothebone for your input. I was not successful in manually entering '7', or automatically scanning in the stations. The station does load into memory, but there is no display of the video or audio. I get a continuous loop of, Display channel ID, then black screen, then a splash of two horizontal green lines, then black screen, then repeat....repeat....repeat.
I was able to change the channel down from '7' to '5', but cannot change the channel going up...This is the only new behavior I saw this evening around 9PM as compared to Sunday around half time of the Chief game.
I need to wait to hear from technicalitalian to know what is going on.
My concern is that KMBC-DT is using some new format of the PSIP and if/when the other stations start using this configuration, that I will no longer be able to use this STB. Replacing the set top box is cheaper than replacing an integrated display and tuner.
jeffdbs 09-10-07, 11:32 PM Jeff, I had to remove 9-1 from my 622 (after 9-2 was added) and manually add channel 7 back in. The 622 then recognized 9-1 and 9-2, and everything has been fine since. I think you're right - the PSIP changed somehow and confused the 622.

Thanks for the info Brad. Well tonight I fired up the HDTV around 9pm. I had a working KMBC9 DT-07 on both the Sony receiver and the Dish Network 622 receiver before I started to try any changes. It was good to see the KMBC news in the digital broadcasting OTA again. :)

Good to hear that, Jeff. BTW, if you haven't gotten an external hard drive for your 622 yet, I highly recommend it. I got the WD MyBook Essential 500 GB (for my birthday!), and it works great! We're ready for the fall season now (we'll probably be watching fall shows well into spring).

mgsports 09-11-07, 03:46 PM The next Cable system here to get MYKSMOTV HD is probley AT&T U-Verse,then Comacst and Everest. S. Dish might already have it.
Does anybody know if you can just get a Cable Box from TWCKC and not suscribe to the Digital Tier channels because I know Comcast and Everest let you and gives you some of the Digital Tier channels turned on,On Demand,Paper Per View and Current TV/Movie Plex turned on,Comcast Central,Music Choice for Comcast and for Everest On Demand,Paper Per View,Music Choice,Interactive TV and so on?

One of my friends who lives in Lees Summit has TimeWarner basic cable. He has a QAM tuner and is able to get the locals in HD. I believe if the locals are available it has to be unscrambled.
bongohawk 09-12-07, 12:12 PM I noticed last night right after midnight KMBC 9 went dark. I wasn't even able to pull it in OTA. I have Dish Network and even the Sat feed was down and a message on the screen saying they were aware of the problem and no need to call. Were they doing some updates, or tweaking their new systems?
mgsports 09-12-07, 01:48 PM The Website works fine.
What kind of Updates could they be doing?
Anybody here know when KCWE will be back to broadcasting HD and displaying Guide info? Seems like since channel 9 went with HD news, 29 has been SD only with no Guide info.

dlnester 09-14-07, 09:13 PM I got a new LCD TV for the bedroom tonight and on the channel scan discovered that Time Warner Cable in Overland Park has ESPN-U in QAM clear on channel 115-11.
samuelles 09-15-07, 07:28 PM Hi, dlnester...I noticed ESPN-U just showed up on QAM about 3 or 4 days ago. Unfortunately (for me), I've lost access to our local CBS channel (KCTV) which I used to tune in on QAM 106-7. Perhaps the channel has changed for KCTV on Time Warner? Please let me know which channel your new TV picks it up on. Thanks!

That's great! I just did a scan and picked it up. The scan also picked up 81-56 but there's no signal when I tune to it. This makes me wonder if there may be another channel coming...anybody heard?
The Chiefs are so horrible this year, I tried watching them in SD instead of HD to see if it would soften the ugliness of it all, but to no avail. :(
situveux1 09-17-07, 07:03 PM Does anybody know if KCWE 29 is broadcasting in HD again? I know this week they have several premiers, so I thought maybe they'd try and have HD again, but...
Hope they get it figured out!
mgsports 09-17-07, 07:21 PM In October all comcast areas should be getting the nhl network soon because it was part of the deal Comcast signed with the NHL when they agreed to be the MAIN network for the NHL for how many ever years they agreed to in the summer of 2006. The deal was versus would show the nhl games and comcast and the nhl would launch the nhl network on all comcast systems and across the united states (i guess cox, cablevision, time warner,et al will show the nhl network as well eventually as part of the deal).
How do I scan on my TV to pick up channels because I have a Digital Box?
DirecTV Tier 2 CSRs say that they are launching many of their new HD channels next week ... around 50 channels are debuting Wednesday. This will increase to 70 channels on October 30th, and over 100 by December.
I just received a notice in my Comcast billing statement(Independence) that effective: October 2, 2007 two new HD channels will be added: HGTV HD & FoodHD. No word on TBS HD.
mgsports 09-21-07, 06:24 PM Did it say also that Fox Business Channel being added on 10-15,NHL Network being added also,Bloomberg News/Fitv/IFC/Fuel/ShopNBC/MYKSMOTV HD and so on be added and these channels being moved or like MTV Hits becoming UrgeTV.
My Bill didn't say that so did anybody's in Olathe say that.
Maybe you can posted what it all said. Was it on the Bill or on a seprate piece of Paper?

I'll give you the message word for word: "Effective October 2, 2007 we will launch 2 new HD channels. HGTV HD channel 198 and Food HD channel 197"
FYI, I'm in Independence, Mo. not Olathe, Kansas......they way have other plans for their system. With the demand for HD programming, I would not expect that many new SD channels being added to your system...just my opinion. Also, does MYKSMOTV HD even have any HD programming?
I am annoyed that AT&T U-verse does not carry The CW Network in HD for any of it's markets, and almost ALL of their shows are HD. I love Smallville and Supernatural but am forced to watch it in SD.
mgsports 09-22-07, 06:09 PM Isn't the MYNETWORKTV Prime Time Programming and the S. Programming on it in HD?
I would say Comcast here meaning Olathe/MO will probley added more HD Channels,Fox Business channel,NHL Network,FITTV and so on channel that Comcast has a contrcat with in the future.
Also the Kansas City Star TV Guide only talks about TWCKC Changes happening or about it's packages and not the other Cable Systems ones here.
Wher do you live in Olathe because I live in Lakeside Marquis Apartments and my bill didn't say that only a Showtime Preview coming up on 9-28-10-06.
I did Email them maybe they will Email me back.

I am in Olathe, and my bill quoted the exact same information about HGTV and Food Network in HD to be added on 10/02/2007. No mention of any of the other channels being added.
I also found out the UVerse in Olathe will have a major roll-out of available areas (almost double the number of addresses, according to the rep at the AT&T store on 135th and Blackbob) to occur the first week of October.

Forced? Can't you pick it up over the air? I can get 29-1 from 60 miles away.
Remember, folks, the title of this forum is Local HDTV Info and RECEPTION.
I have noticed on my native 720p display that Fox HD football(e.g. Chiefs on Sept 23) is not nearly as sharp as the commercials that are shown. Does Fox really do football originating in 720p or do they do some unpconverting from a lower resolution signal?
Thanks,
Warren

Remember, folks, the title of this forum is Local HDTV Info and RECEPTION.True. But I shouldn't be forced to buy an ugly antenna just to pick up one channel when I pay as much as I do for service. I also can't use my DVR with an antenna to record the show when I am away, which is often.
"Reception" does refer to OTA ATSC but "Local HDTV Info" envelops cable, IPTV, and Satellite as it relates to the KCMO DMA. Let us all remember that as well.
stevei44 09-26-07, 11:30 AM Did anyone else notice that CBS last night was only in DT. I thought I was having a problem with my OTA ant. but ABC was crystal clear HD. Why would CBS or Fox not broadcast in HD in prime time or could there be a problem in my set up?
Thanks!

mgsports 09-26-07, 04:26 PM Probley in Early October Comcast here NHL Network will be added somewhere on the Digital Tier.
If you have Directtv they added on 10-1-07 and have added the HD channels today the ones they said they were going to add.
I would say TWCKC/Everest and AT&T U-verse would also probley added it to.
News-961 is out at the Moment.
We got the Denver Game here on CBS because the Chiefs were on Fox.
dlnester 09-26-07, 05:40 PM So CNN HD launched today on DirecTV and from all the reports I've read at http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=99499 make it sound glorious...
So... how long until Time Warner Cable adds it? I mean we're talking about the same corporation here.
reuthermonkey 09-27-07, 04:18 PM Time Warner also owns HBO/Cinemax, and TBS which aren't being broadcast on TWC systems, although their digital feeds supposedly went live on the first of this month.
I'm currently a TWC customer using CableCard for my 7th Gen Pioneer plasma. HD Tier
I'm considering switching from the CableCard to their HD-DVR. My thinking that posting here will get me more reliable answers than calling up customer service.
I *think* they are using the Scientific Atlanta 8300.
1. What software does TWC use?
2. Can I set the HD-DVR to "pass-through" the signal to the Pio and let the Pio do the scaling? (without having it scaled twice therefore reducing PQ)
3. How big is the hard drive?
4. How many channels can be recorded at one time? Watched while being recorded?
5. PQ comparison vs. CableCard?
I would really appreciate any and all info regarding this issue. User experiences, etc. The price difference is minimal. Kind of getting tired using the PC to record SD shows, then watching them on the Pio that's just screaming for HD content.
I sincerely appreciate any help thrown my way.

EricM407 09-28-07, 07:40 AM 1. What software does TWC use?
I have Passport, but the switch to Navigator is happening. If you get a box today, I'm not sure which one they give you.
2. Can I set the HD-DVR to "pass-through" the signal to the Pio and let the Pio do the scaling? (without having it scaled twice therefore reducing PQ)
You can with Passport, don't know about Navigator.
3. How big is the hard drive?
150GB. I believe you can supplement that with an external SATA drive, but I haven't tried it.
4. How many channels can be recorded at one time? Watched while being recorded?
Two. It has two tuners, so if you're recording two channels at once, then you're limited to watching only those two channels.
5. PQ comparison vs. CableCard?
I doubt there's any difference unless you have the box doing some scaling.

In addition to Eric's comments just above ... I'll add my own here, directed at specific questions:
2) My suggestion would be to set the output of the 8300 to whatever your display's native resolution is (~720p?). You can play around with it ... but (not knowing the specifics of your display) the scaling of the 8300 might be better than what's in your plasma. I've got an older set and don't like the idea of my TV re-syncing and then reseting the resolution every time I change the channel ... so I'm biased with my opinion, I suppose.
4) You can also watch a previously recorded show while two new shows are being recorded.
5) CableCard doesn't have any PQ connotations associated with it. It's merely a means for decrypting the digital QAM signal broadcast by the cable company. PQ is determined by many things - What piece of equipment is doing the decoding - What, if any, scaling is taking place between the output of the decoder and the display - What is the integrity of the cabling, if any, between the decoder and the display ... The 8300HD is a pretty good unit ... I doubt you'd have objections with it's PQ.
zaknafein 09-28-07, 11:33 AM I used an SA8300HD from TWCKC for about two years. I hate the damn thing. It was completely unreliable, and frustrating to the extreme.
I switched to a TiVo HD with two CableCards, and have been extremely happy. If you're thinking about going the DVR route, I'd suggest giving that box a look.
Also, the PQ from the TiVo is somewhat better than the SA to my eyes, using the same display and same HDMI cable.
dlnester 09-28-07, 02:54 PM Looks like we could possibly have TBS-HD on TWC Oct. 1
http://www.tvpredictions.com/twtbs092007.htm
Time Warner has also told customers in the Northwest part of North Carolina area that several other HD channels will be added on October 15:
A&E HD, MTV HD, History Channel HD, CNN HD, Lifetime Movies HD, Food Network HD, Golf Channel/Versus HD, and Universal HD.
CNN HD, The History Channel HD and Lifetime Movies HD appear to be additions to most existing Time Warner HD lineups.
zaknafein 09-28-07, 03:23 PM Hope it happens quick. it would suck not to be able to watch the AL/NL divisional playoffs in HD.
mgsports 09-28-07, 08:16 PM Now if ESPN was carrying the Playoffs if would be in HD.
I haven't seen anything in KC Star about TWCKC adding in new channels other then Fox Business Channel in October.
TV Guide Listings for Olathe has Food Network HD 197 and HGTV HD 198 already in their but nothing else new in it yet.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/csb/coals/index.html shows VH1 Uno and 2 other Spanish not in our Linuep yet so maybe they will be added to.
No NHL Center Ice preview or a blank channel for NHL Network yet.
Has anybody South of 135th Street just has one NFL Network on 275 and not also 180?
137 Hallmark Channel Comcast on this Tuesday because that what most of the Online listongs have it at and alos still on 77.
dlnester 09-29-07, 10:51 AM The MLB Playoffs will be in HD on TBS, just who will be able to see it?
I was surfing through the Analog channels on TWC last night and I noticed that my TV says channel 12 (KMBC) and channel 13 (KSHB) are in MONO, while the rest of the KC Metro Local channels are in Stereo. Channel 19 (KTWU) is also in MONO from Topeka.
Not that it matters, as I watch the HD versions anyway, but that just seems odd that they would be in Mono.
chasreinecke 09-29-07, 01:07 PM If I subscribe to DishNetwork, is there any need to purchase an external HD antenna?
dlnester 09-29-07, 01:13 PM You will only get ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX in HD on Dish Network, no CW, MNTV, or any of the sub-channels.
Eric & Durham,
Thanks for the replies.
I decided to try out the box. Didn't hurt that the first 3 months are free. I've read some alarming posts in other threads about the 8300HDC's issues. Still more to come on that.
Looks as if you use HDMI, it automatically passes through whatever signal is being sent. I cannot tell any difference between the box and the CableCard as far as PQ goes.
I didn't like it at all until I taught my Harmony remote. Now much better. Especially the guide. The guide on the Pioneer 5070 is awful. The TWC may not be much better to some, but to me, it's night and day. (for the good)
Now... back to football.
Thank you again for your responses and help.

DurhamHusker 10-01-07, 10:54 AM Eric & Durham,
Thanks for the replies.You're welcome.
Looks as if you use HDMI, it automatically passes through whatever signal is being sent. I cannot tell any difference between the box and the CableCard as far as PQ goes. I didn't figure you'd have any objections to picture quality.
Yes, when using HDMI (or DVI for that matter) the decoding device will communicate with the display and then deliver the most appropriate signal. I must use component cables on my old set so I didn't even bother to think about that.
Question for you: Out of curiosity, can you set your TV to allow a specific set of resolutions or it is fully automatic (no user settings available)?
It is automatic. Kind of
Example: When watching a show like...ok, Law & Order CI on USA. Using CableCard, the (I'm assuming here) 480i/p signal still filled the screen. I used the aspect modes on the Pioneer to adjust to my liking. Now the same show/signal/channel will not fill the screen. In addition, changing aspect modes using the Pio doesn't fill the screen. However, when watching whatever channel, the plasma does let me know what type of signal (assuming again..) it is displaying (480i, 720p, 1080i, etc.) There was no setup to get that achieved. I suppose that it's automatic when using HDMI.
I would still like to be able to fill the screen with SD materical, but it's not a dealbreaker since this only rears it's head when watching SD stuff. On the HD side it's good so far. OK- one thing. PIP - the PIP box appears, but at times when swapping the sources, when the "little" box goes to the "front" the screen is black, I have to change the channel to get it to appear. Then when swapping again, (full back to small PIP) that same source goes black again. Have to change the channel again to get it back. Not sure if this is a problem inherent in the 8300HDC or possibly a suspect tuner.
HD recording has worked well so far. That part is good.
I've went on too far already, but hope this answers your question. If you have any ideas about the PIP issue or getting SD material to fill the screen shoot me a pm or post back. I would be glad to play around to get these issues fixed.
Take care,
Skid

Is TWCKC Preview channel helpful?
I wish their was a channel called Johnson County Goverment channel that would carry the other cities in Johnson County that don't show their City/Council and Planning and Zoning Meetings Live on TV.
I like Navigator I wish the other Cable systems here had something like it.
wschwart 10-02-07, 01:09 AM TBSHD would be nice for the playoffs. By the way are any other Comcast users upset by the new colors used for displaying the time bars and program info? I think that using green and blue really suck since they are hard to read at times.
What will you Comcast viewers be doing at midnight if you have HD watching Food Network and HGTV HD and other HD channels like TBS/MYKSMOTV if added.
If you watch Hallmark Channel don't forget to up date your favorites for it to 137.
Tomorrow I will report on Comcast new channels and channels that have been moved.
TWCKC/AT&T U-Verse and Everest could also be doing things tomorrow to.

Also saw that Hallmark was moved from Ch. 74 to Ch. 137, and the west-coast HBO, SHO, MAX, TMC and STZ have been removed. Just got off the phone with a CSR; gave me a canned response of "there was no new or unique programming on the west coast feeds, just what was on the east coast feed but three hours later". I would love to find out who the idiots are at Comcast that make these decisions, do not tell anyone about channel removals or moves, and then do not provide a local contact number to find out why the change affected the local system (the CSR was in a call center in Louisiana that handles calls from Indiana - go figure).

If given a choice, what would you choose: Keep the west coast feeds of premium channels, or add new HD channels? Unfortunately, Comcast(and other cable companies) don't have unlimited bandwidth to endlessly add new channels. It is a difficult situation, but until new technology is introduced, its a choice between keeping the existing analog channels and west coast feeds of premium channels(an issue that can be resolved by adding a DVR) or staying competitive by adding HD channels.
wschwart 10-03-07, 12:26 AM I see the new HD channels on Comcast. I really at this point care about TBS-HD which has not been added. Is there some statement somewhere that it was going to be added? I was out of town for about a week so I probably missed it.
If given a choice, what would you choose: Keep the west coast feeds of premium channels, or add new HD channels?
Given the choice, I would rather have the west coast feeds of the premium channels, since I am paying a premium price for an advertised 10 channels of HBO, not 6.

Two added HD channels on the same day 15 analog channels are removed. Seems like a fair swap.

So, do you want to contribute $15.95 per month for my DVR service, on top of what we're paying for the premium channels? No thank you.No I don't! Most cable/satellite providers are eliminating redundant west-coast feeds to free space. YOU were not getting an extra channel.....just the same channel(East coast feed time-shifted). The DVR allows you to Time-shift every channel......but that is a personal choice.....like being a customer at all!

Actually, Only 1 analog channel was removed. The west-coast premium channels were/are digital channels.
I have no problem with you feeling that way.....and you should let Comcast know how you feel!
I attempted to last night. Unfortunately, I do not have direct access to contact Brenda Buttner, the manager of the Olathe office of Comcast. Up until about a year ago, I could call the local Comcast number and be able to speak to the manager. Now, calling the local number gets you to the call center. I may have to visit the office in person to express my opinion.

True, the premium channels were only available on the digital box, but these were still SD channels, I apologize for my mischaracterization. But, does it take 15 SD channels to add two HD channels? Not an equitable swap.
mgsports 10-03-07, 09:22 AM Comcast Olathe/MO needs to give more noticed when they are going to be doing this to the Lineup.
We don't need West Coast Feeds but rename like HBO-East to HBO-Midwest.
We still have HBO-West and so on.
Maybe somebody could call Comcast CSR here and ask them when Interactive TV,TBS/CNN/History Channel/USA/MYKSMOTV and so on HD will be here, moving any more channels to Digital and if they are adding channels like Bloomberg News,FITTV,IFC,ShopNBC,Shop at Home TV,Fuse,Fox Movie Channel,Bet Jazz anytime soon and Fox Business channel on the 15.
Removing those West Coast Feeds of Encore Network's and Flix only open space for new Digital Movie Channels that we don't have yet.
NHL Network delayed to 11-1.
http://connect.charter.com/portal/settings/channellineups.aspx but Comcast needs to do something like this but also do it for changes coming up.
I have read that Comcast has signed national contracts to carry TBS-HD and CNN-HD and possibly others(USA-HD?)! Obviously, not every market will get these channels.....at least not right away. It is possible that the recent moves eliminating some of the premium channels west-coast feeds and removing the "Hallmark Channel" from analog was to make room for some/all of these new channels in addition to HGTV HD & FOODHD that were added yesterday.
zaknafein 10-03-07, 09:47 AM I spoke with a CSR for TWCKC today, who, after doing some checking, said that they will not be carrying TBS-HD for the MLB playoffs. :(
Of course, you never know how informed a single CSR is, but it isn't looking good.
reuthermonkey 10-03-07, 03:27 PM Given the choice, I would rather have the west coast feeds of the premium channels, since I am paying a premium price for an advertised 10 channels of HBO, not 6.
So, do you want to contribute $15.95 per month for my DVR service, on top of what we're paying for the premium channels? No thank you.
Did you ask the Comcast folks for this? Because you damn well should have. I always thought having west-coast channels for "east" viewers was redundant marketing bullshit anyways. Tell them that you want a DVR to mitigate the loss of west-coast feeds, or you'll cancel...

I understand the frustration of having something taken away. Although I personally think having a alternate feed of the same channel is a waste of bandwidth, it clearly was something the OP enjoyed and used. I also understand that Comcast(and other cable companies) needs to make changes to expand their HD programming......that so many customers who now own HD televisions are asking for. I think the best solution for markets that NEED to eliminate the west-coast premium feeds is to lower the cost for the customer.......its only fair.

I asked for both - a refund for the reduced number of channels and a DVR. They said that since no new and unique programming was being removed, no refund was due and besides, the movies on the six channels were on HBO OnDemand. I then said that is incorrect, that while HBO programming may be on demand, programming on HBOSIG, HBOFamily and HBOZone were not. For example, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was broadcast on HBOSIG on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 PM on the East feed. Since my kids like this movie, I told the kids it would be available at 4:30 PM on the west feed. That was incorrect since the west feeds were removed Tuesday. I then went to HBO OnDemand and looked in the All Movies category - no HPATGF. A similar thing happened this afternoon with Star Wars Ep. 3. It was on HBOFamily at 1:15 PM. Looked for it on On Demand - not there.

The Kansas City Chiefs-Jacksonville Jaguars game at noon Sunday will be shown locally on KCTV Channel 5, according to Bob Moore, the team’s director of public relations. Slow ticket sales raised concerns that the game would be blacked out, but the Chiefs are close enough to a sellout that it will be televised. It would have been the first local TV blackout since 1990.
However, there are still tickets available.

I think they spot-beam the RSNs, for now, until their full MPEG4 HD rollout, when the HD RSNs will be available nationwide. That means that, if you have MPEG4 hardware (ch. 95 is MPEG2), you should get it on FSN Midwest HD (ch 647?), I think. But I'm not sure and could be completely wrong.. I'll be in attendance, though, so it'll be perfectly clear to me. :) Go Cats!!

I would like to know that as well! I know Comcast has signed national contracts for those channels, but it seemed to take them a long time to add HGTV-HD and FoodHD to our local markets. Unfortunately, it seems doubtful that these new channels will be added in next few weeks or months.

I haven't found a single new channel in QAM-Clear since ESPN-U appeared several weeks ago.
Comcast needs to get their act together really soon. They had been advertising a free preview of the NHL Center Ice package for the beginning of the hockey season. The fact that the first five of the eleven days advertised as being part of the free preview there were only two games being played, and one was broadcast on VS, did not seem to matter. However, last night (Friday) was the first night where more than 1/2 the league was playing, so I was hoping to scan through about five to six games. However, when I got to the channels, they were still blacked out. I called Comcast's local number (again) to find out why. I first got a billing rep in a Louisiana office who transferred me back to the main Comcast number, and then was transferred to three different CSRs until I got a sales rep, who told me "The channels show up fine here in Indianapolis. It must be a problem in Olathe." After spending over an hour on the phone, I still was not able to get an answer as to why the free preview was not being shown on our system. Also, I tried Comcast's online CSR chat system and was online with a CSR from Toronto, who kept saying "The NHL free preview is only for people who live in NJ (New Jersey). You should contact your local Comcast office to find out the problem." It's like running in circles.
I know this is not HD related, but since this forum killed the Kansas City - Comcast thread late last year, I thought this was the only place I could vent.

In fact, all of the channels on the digital box look terrible this morning. You can't view the program grid on any of the HD channels, the SD channels are blurry and the HD channels all look like they are in stretch-o-vision mode.

Hopefully Comcast will ONLY add HD channels now due to the limited bandwidth. HD is the future, no sense in investing in SD only channels at this point. I have read that many Comcast markets are adding the following HD channels currently not available in Independence/Olathe: USA HD, History Channel HD, and CNN-HD.

Is anyone else wondering why, when a St. Louis Blues game is shown on FSNMW and is identified at the beginning of the game as being shown in HD, it is not shown on the FSN HD channel? jamiegeist 10-14-07, 10:46 PM My first post over here, as I've mainly just been kicking it around in the Vizio forum, where I learned about the TV I bought, that being the Vizio 32LX. I'm not looking for any criticisms of my tv choice, but rather have a question that I posted over there that got no response. Hopefully you all can be of help to me:
Anyone notice some pretty consistent pixelation happening on NBC in HD?
I'm on Time Warner Cable In Kansas City, and I have been regularly noticing it on the Sunday Night Football broadcasts. It only happens on the close-up shots in between plays, usually where you have alot of players or crowd shot in the background. It is a very noticeable pixelation.
Well for the first time tonight I noticed it when watching The Office. They do a lot of jerky quick camera movements, going from one side of the room to the other, and it happened numerous times where I got very noticeable pixelation during these moves.
My question -- has anyone else noticed this? And I'm quite sure it is the NBC signal I'm getting, and NOT the Vizio. I love my TV, just tossing it out there for discussion. Any input would be helpful.
To add to that, I have experienced ZERO pixelating on every other channel, period. It is quite a regular occurence on NBC, however. Thanks for any help, and sorry for any noobness.
CycloneMike 10-15-07, 01:02 AM I usually do not notice these things as quickly as some others, but NBCHD on TWC tonight was terrible during the football game. Almost unwatchable at times.
EricM407 10-15-07, 07:16 AM NBC doesn't seem to understand how to do HD. And it's not because of the local affiliate/sub-channel, because sports programming that originates on NBC and gets replayed on Universal HD (like the ND football games most Sundays) always looks like crap too.
You want to know what drives me crazy? I'm on TWC-KC and I had to watch the MU-OU game on Fox Sports NON HD. That's bad enough in itself...but when I am watching KSU on ESPN2 HD and they show HIGHLIGHTS of the damn MU-OU game during the breaks IN HD...as if they're teasing me.
Tell me that's not annoying...
reuthermonkey 10-15-07, 11:15 AM NBC is notoriously bad in HD because of that pixellation. check out the HD programming forum and you'll see a lot of complaints about it. On the one hand, Weather+ has something to do with it, but on the other hand, I think NBC is just inept.
KSBugeater 10-15-07, 11:15 AM Not nearly as annoying as paying $30 to watch your team get their rears handed to them on Homecoming by a team that hadn't won in Lincoln since the Eisenhower Administration on amateurish pay-per-view. Quit whining.
BTW, I watched Mizzou give the game away in HD on DirecTV, and it wasn't any prettier than what you saw.
Every day I think more and more about going with DirecTV...

jamiegeist 10-15-07, 04:30 PM Thanks for the comments about NBC-HD. It sucks, but at least it puts my mind at ease that my Display isn't the reason. I assumed it wasn't, but just wanted to make sure.

adam11509 10-15-07, 09:09 PM FBN on TWCKC is coming in great. Channel 232, kinda expected to see it on ch. 35 on the standard package. My frustrations lie with TWCKC not giving us any more HD channels. Why not TBS HD for the playoffs? Or Food HD, HGTV HD, History HD and so on.
I know there are negatives with DirecTV just like any other provider but I am really tempted by all the HD and TWC won't EVER have that many HD channels let alone by next year...
AT&T Uverse is adding HD channels pretty quickly (LMN-HD & HIST-HD yesterday as well as TBS-HD & BTN-HD recently), but the service has some technical glitches they are still working out (early growing pains) and it is not available everywhere yet.

You are right that they all suck. They suck because there isn't competition for the cable companies between each other. I know you have Everest, but TWC doesn't consider them real competiton like Comcast would be if they got into a marketing war for customers. I live north of the river and of course there is no Everest, I would like to have them as an option but they just aren't a fast growing company. Shoot, just wish I had comcast as an option. I've had satelite, and there's no comparison to cable services. Cable is just much better.
dlnester 10-16-07, 08:44 PM To each their own:
I had cable growing up, and then got Dish Network and loved it. My parents now have Dish Network HD and they love it and wouldn't go anywhere else. I'm back to having TWC right now because my apartment faces north with no view to the South/Southwest and I hate having cable again. Crappy analog 2-77 and then the organization of the digital channels is just not that good. I can't wait to get out of here and get satellite again.
Met today with the Olathe branch manager of Comcast. The manager listened to my concerns (lack of local contacts, call centers receiving calls, advertising that does not match service, disappearance of west coast feeds, no FSNHD broadcasts) and, though she was pleasant and understood my concerns, the main message I received from our meeting was "There's nothing I can do about this." She explained that the use of national call centers is Comcast's decision, and that they have not taken calls at the local office in several years. Also, that Comcast has put inexperienced CSRs in the active call centers just to handle the volume of calls.
And, so I can have this post qualify to be in the HD thread, I did ask if there were to be any additional HD channels added in the near future. She informed me that there were to be seven HD channels added "by the end of the year", but she could not tell me when they would be added or what channels they would be, primarily because she was not given specifics. A technician, who stopped by her office, said he would check into the lack of Blues games on the FSNHD channel for Olathe while that channel is being received in Independence for those games.

Go with directv, they are better.
mgsports 10-18-07, 05:54 PM Why didn't you ask to when will Fox Business Channel/Bloomberg News/NHL Network/MYKSMOTV HD/IFC/Fuse/FITTV/ShopNBC and so on be added to the Linuep because I like it when more Channels are added other then HD ones and also MTV Hits to UrgeTV,channels like Discovery Health to 182 and so on?
Good to know some more HD Channels will be added this year here.
You might post what you heard from them here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/tvcomcast.

Because I don't care about FBN/Bloomberg/MYKSMOTV/ IFC/Fuse/FITTV/ShopNBC. I only care about HD and about NHL Network, but I'm guessing it's one of the HD channels that will be added.

I'd love to, however, my wife has four VCRs (yes, VCRs not DVD+-R) hooked up to standard cable that she records shows during the day on. I don't want to spend the money for eight STBs; so far, none of the cable/satellite/UVerse providers has a DVR system that allows you to record on one box and watch on any other box/TV in the house; and I don't want to make an investment in setting up a DVR network through the internet connections in the house. So, I'm stuck with Comcast until the technology becomes available to do the whole house DVR.

Just an idea! Instead of asking everyone on this forum to call Comcast.....why don't you call yourself? Apparently, You want theses channels added VERY badly, which is fine, but alot of us would prefer that they focus 100% on HD channels until they completely eliminate analog and have substantial bandwidth to add new channels, substitute channels, or re-name channels.

Well said. Better yet, he should do what I did and go out to the Comcast office and ask these questions in person. Otherwise, he'll get a call center CSR who won't have a clue as to what is going on here. He should also have a dictionary available or a good spell check program.
mgsports 10-19-07, 06:27 PM I perfer Emailing them.
Just my guess.
7 HD channels coming
CNN
USA
History Channel
MYKSMOTV because TWKC has it and Comcast,Everest and AT&T U-Verse doesn't
Some other two that Comcast has a contract with that we don't have yet like maybe Team and Game or FBN or NHL Network HD
Non HD Channels coming
276- NHL Network
106- Fox Business Channel with CSPN2 moving to 104
103- Bloomberg News
Theirs others that might becoming that Comcast has a contract with that we don't have yet to.
MTV Hits to URGETV
Discovery Health to 182 and so on moved to Digital.
I did post what you said here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/tvcomcast?r=67
TV Guide Channel is almost a new channel because it just Shows now 24/7 and not half screen of Shows on the top and Listing on the bottom.
The INDPPV Channels that had Movies on it are gone and moved to on Demand but the ones with Events are still here.

Wow. I have TWC in Liberty, and had guests at the house who wanted to watch something on the CW in HD. Absolutely the worst signal I've seen -- even worse than NBC and their football issues a couple weeks ago. Never seen so much pixellation and audio zips.
Felt like it used to when a bird landed on my DTV dish!
Glad I don't personally watch anything on CW...

jsalava 10-23-07, 10:55 PM Has anyone else on Olathe Comcast who's using a cablecard recently lost their TV Guide On Screen listings. Mine had been working with rare hiccups for the past year, but for the past week (maybe longer - been outta town) I get only "No Listing" for all channels. I have an LG 42LB1DR and I have removed and reinsterted the cable card and reset the listings setup with no luck whatsoever.
hoandrews 10-24-07, 09:23 AM I have a SA 8300HDC. How do I set-up the box in the native mode so that the resolution of the source signal (1080i/720p/480i) is passed on to my TV? It's my understanding that currently the box is doing the converting. Does this mean that both the box and the TV are converting and does that affect the picture quality?
By the way, last night the picture quality on NCIS was not very sharp and bright. Later I watched another CBS HD broadcast and the picture was normal HD quality. Is it possible that the broadcast was in 720p?
Thanks,
Andy

I don't have the new software on my 8300, so this may not apply. However, in the 'old' software, you hit the "settings" button on your remote, then select "more settings" from the menu. You'll see a selection for "output format."
To allow your TV to do all the converting, you just select every output format on the 8300's menu.

That is NOT possible. The CBS network does all high-def in 1080i. All KCTV equipment processes only 1080i. If your perception was that of lower quality, then something in your chain of equipment was causing the problem. Locally, only TWC picks up a digital stream directly from KCTV. All others pick the signal off-air and re-process it into whatever stream they use. As an aside, My Network prime time is not in high def due to it being distibuted in 720p. We would need a cross-converter to air that siganl, but frankly there is not enough audience to justify the expense of the cross-conversion. If the numbers pick up on My Network prime time, then look for My Network to go high def. in Kansas City.

NCIS looks poor on OTA HD as well! I think they use a filter when they film to benefit some of the "Older" actors.

I wondered about that, why My 62 wasn't in HD. Kind of a catch-22, b/c I would be more likely to watch if programming was HD! A question: why did Meredith go for My Network if they knew that their HD was not going to be 1080i?
Another question for the general group: when the Chiefs played on NFL Network last year, did the local syndicated broadcast use 1080i to broadcast the game? I can't remember.

Yes. It was on KSHB, and they're 1080i anyway.

It sounds as though you work for KCTV/KSMO. Thanks for your insight. It's nice to know that we have at least two posters (incl. technicalitalian) that work for one of the local broadcasters.
A question for you, however. Is KCTV planning on broadcasting any of their local programming (e.g., the newscasts, the Chiefs pre-game shows on Sunday morning) in HD? Also, is the reason the Chiefs pre-season games were not broadcast in HD was because the programming originated with MetroSports rather than with KCTV? Thanks for your information.

EricM407 10-25-07, 06:17 PM It was on 41. I'm sure of it, because I remember thinking it was the best HD football that had ever been on that channel. They still haven't figured out how to get SNF and ND games to look that good.

One NFL Network game was broadcast on WDAF and it was in 1080i. In fact, WDAF was transmitting in 1080i the night before the Chiefs were on the NFL network broadcast. Check out some of the older posts in this thread. That was the only time I have ever seen pixelation on a WDAF broadcast and it was due to the NFL Network feed.

Comcast is the HD Leader and you can get the whole story on TVPREDICTIONS.com
The TV Guide Network on Comcast works fine and if you want to see TV Listings on your TV just hit the Guide button because the TV Guide Network doesn't show them anymore.

Yes I do work for KCTV/KSMO. As for local programming in HD, that is still down the road yet. The most likely path will be to begin with local newscasts that originate in our studio, and gradually migrate toward other events in HD (Chiefs, parades, etc). Unlike our friends at KMBC, we don't have the luxury of wholesaling out an entire tech plant in one swoop as they did (new offices, studio, tech plant, everything). We will have to take what we all feel like are baby steps to get there. Just to give you an idea of what is involved, we need HD cameras for the studio, and for the field. Thats at least 4 studio cameras and 14 to 16 field cameras. Then you need HD graphics, HD weather equipment, HD server playout, HD ENG back-haul, (live trucks, helicopter, etc) and of course an HD switcher, router, and the cable infrastructure to support it. Then what to do with the audio? Leave it in stereo, try to move to 5.1? Only time will tell. The above list represents several million dollars worth of equipment, bearing in mind we still have to spend our budgets on things not related to HD equipment, so it will be a slow process. Other stations in the market are faced with the same challenges. KSHB has a leg up on us as there are already using HD studio cameras and they have some server playout in HD. At WDAF, things are likely on hold since they are up for sale.
And one other thing all local station have in common, the mandated migration to digital television over the air requires a huge investment in new equipment, yet just because we have a bright shiny new digital signal, we still get the same ad rate as before. We cannot upcharge for advertising just because it suddenly costs more to air it. Bottom line, revenue the same, expenses higher. Just so everyone is clear on this point, the digital coversion is mandated, HD is optional. Sorry about the long winded answer, but there were a lot of points to cover. We appreciate you guys checking up on us and catching problems usually before we know about them.
tblankenship 10-26-07, 09:25 AM I really appreciate the detailed explanation.

tvoldtimer,
Welcome to the KC forum on AVS!!! We are very glad you found us and it is always helpful to have someone directly connected with one of the local affiliates. We have another guy named technicalitalian who is an engineer at KMBC and he has kept us updated on things at Channel 9 such as program changes, HD updates, etc. Anyways, keep us posted on KCTV/KSMO's upgrades, changes and other things. Since all of us are obsessed with HD, well at least I am, we will take any nugget of info you can provide.

In the grand scheme of things, that is very small point. The real cost of doing a cross-conversion is not even a capital equipment purchase. It is so low on the priortiy mainly because we haven't been getting complaints about the lack of HD content. So a few phone calls or emails might get someone to begin to think somebody out there cares for HD.

jeffdbs 10-26-07, 07:48 PM I was wondering if someone here who reads these forums has seen any of the new low cost analog to digital Over-the-Air converter boxes? Got some family members I need to get their analog televisions up and running to the digital age.

hoandrews 10-27-07, 11:45 AM The main reason I'm considering moving from TWC to Direct TV is possible better quality picture and more HD channels. I have a new Sony 40" Bravia LCD (40v3000). My previous TV was a Sony 30" HD CRT.

Did anyone else notice that at 4:58 PM, during the last few laps of the NASCAR race on ABC/ESPN, KMBC decided to interrupt the coverage, thereby missing the crash that brought out the second-to-last caution, and instead show commercials that, I am sure, were scheduled to be shown as the transition from the NASCAR race to the local 5:00 PM news would have taken place.

Cable and Satellite companies compress HD programming with various technologies(Mpeg2 & Mpeg4) and will sometimes differ in the resolution and bit-rate, all of these factors will affect picture quality. However, to most people, the difference is very subtle.......or not noticeable at all. I would make your choice based on channel choices and price. Direct TV has the best HD programming currently available, but the cable companies give you a few added advantages like VOD programming(Questionable value!) and better options to save money by bundling your services.

Jeff, I don't think you'll see any of the converter boxes until January '08, when the $40 coupons become available. I know there are several manufacturers out there ready to go, though. I'm going to need to set up my mother with two or three of them myself, so I'm keeping my eye out for them.

Not that it makes you feel any better, but KTKA-49 in Topeka stayed with ABC/ESPN to the end yesterday. Almost makes up for KTKA leaving the Charlotte race early a few weeks ago and not even bothering to let folks know who won!
ESPN2 will rebroadcast the race today at 2:30. Somehow they fit it into 2 hours.
tblankenship 10-29-07, 11:40 AM That mistake was hard to miss. You could tell they broke to commercial while the commentators were still talking and then they came back in the middle of the action. Of course, all I could do was shake my head.

The true answer would be long, but I'll try to shorten it up. The picture quality will be roughly the same. I've been impressed at how the MPEG4 channels look through DirecTV. There are tons and tons of threads on DirecTV picture quality (search the HD programming forum for "HD Lite"), but most of those problems are on the MPEG2 channels.
I switched from Everest to DirecTV last week because there are so many more HD channels available, and I'm quite happy with it. But I wouldn't expect better picture quality, except on the analog SD channels. Any HD picture quality problems you have are probably because of the network or production, not the delivery from TWC.
Good luck!
mgsports 10-29-07, 07:55 PM Yes S. Dish gives more non HD channels that Comcast doesn't have yet but when Comcast moves every channel execpt Local Channels to Digital they will have more non HD Channels in our.

If possible recheck your coax cable connections and make sure all coax connections are tight especially outside. Also dump all your Over-the-Air channels and rescan the airwaves maybe some of the PSIP has change since your last scan. Hope this helps.:)
adam11509 10-31-07, 08:36 PM Has anybody noticed the new lineup of cannels on TWC/HD? Nothing great, and I'm not sure I even understand what these channels are. One list of channels is SNHL/MLB and they have 14 channels. The other is SESPN and they have 7 channels. Is this supposed to be pay per view or something? If anybody knows that would be great, the TWC rep I talked to today told me that those channels don't exist and she is not seeing these channels in the lineup.

I don't have TWC, but it sounds like these are the NHL Center Ice/MLB Extra Innings and ESPN Game Plan channels. These are season-long packages where out-of-market games are shown on a subscription basis. Comcast has 14 NHL/MLB channels and 6 ESPN Channels. They also have 9 channels for the NBA Season Pass.

Can't say I've been in this forum yet. Anyway, I live in Topeka, and am a HT nut. Look forward to hanging out here.

I saw those the other day and now they are gone, or at lease moved.

mgsports 11-04-07, 08:32 PM Comcast will be adding the BTN in January and "will have many features".
dlnester 11-04-07, 09:55 PM Time Warner Cable has made some moves on the analog channel lineup in Johnson County. Looks like A&E is now on 35, with Discovery Health moving from 77 to a lower channel number (77 is now off-the-air) and I think a few other channels moved too but not 100% sure what they are. I don't have a cable box so I can't tell for sure.
Slick Impala 11-04-07, 10:49 PM Hi there! I'm a new member to this forum. I was referred here by a great member from Satelliteguys. I have a question or am asking for help. I have Dish Network (with paid locals of course). I am at some point, going to upgrade to Dish Network HD programming, but I am wanting to get my OTA antenna, cables and everything else in order. I currently have a RATTY old rooftop antenna in my attic. It pulls in HD 4,5 and the others are kinda kinda if you follow me. I just upgraded all my cable runs from the antenna to tv's with RG6 and now am ready for the next step. Does any body have any idea/suggestions on what kind of antenna I could get? Keep in mind, I live out in Belton and it is going to be an attic install. I was looking at Radio Shacks antenna but I'm not so sure. I am also kinda looking to Channel Master's stuff as well. I'd just like to have a GOOD antenna that pulls all my local channels in solidly with no dropouts. When I achieve that, then I will upgrade to HD programming and drop my paid locals. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what all channels moved either, but I just did a scan and I am picking up TNT in clear QAM on 103-12. I wish they would put more HD channels in clear QAM.
dlnester 11-05-07, 03:23 PM That would be TNT-HD in QAM-Clear even...

Welcome to the KC Forum! Before you do anything else, I would make sure that your existing antenna is aimed properly. In Belton, I would aim it just a little bit west of straight north as a start.
Well, I guess that's really the second thing to do. The first would be to make sure that your antenna has both VHF and UHF elements. (Channel 9 is currently on digital channel 7, which is VHF, and after February, 2009 it will be on digital channel 9. The rest of the local digital signals are UHF.) If you get basically all the local analog channels (even if "ghosty") on your old TV's, you should be OK.
OK, back to aiming. Digital TV is pretty forgiving on antenna aiming if the antenna isn't too directional. I'd start just west of north, do a channel scan on a digital tuner, and see what you get. You may have to tweak it a little bit, but I'd be surprised if your old antenna didn't work. You say it's "ratty." Does that mean it's all bent-up/broken, or does it just look "old?" Is it "looking" through the roof, or a sidewall? (Sometimes if you have multiple layers of roofing, the nails can be a problem, or if the wall has foil-backed foam insulation, that can be a problem.)
OTA isn't rocket science, but it can be a challenge. Hang in there, it's worth it!
P.S. If you're on Dish Network (as I am), you realize that you won't get guide data for your OTA's unless you subscribe to E* locals, don't you?
Brad
mgsports 11-05-07, 06:33 PM http://www.timewarnercable.com/CustomerService/CLU/TWCCLUs.ashx?menu=ChannelLineups doesn't show the changes.
Do you have a Digital Box because I think you can't scan if you have on because I would to scan and pick up channels that Comcast Olathe/MO doesn't offer yet?
Slick Impala 11-05-07, 10:50 PM Hey there Bradtothebone!
Thank you for chiming in on this. I REALLY don't know from an experienced eye if my antenna is UHF and VHF. Upon looking at other antenna's on the web, it seems like UHF only and UHF/VHF combos only boom looks pretty much the same. From what I could count, I counted 25 or 26 bars/elements. Take or give 1 or 2 if you count the "movable bars." I tried looking all OVER the antenna for some sorta model nbr, serial, company name. Nothing. On my HD tv downstairs in the basement (cable comes from antenna to splitter ((which splits to bedroom and living room)) to 1st floor living room, 1 splits to living room tv and 2nd split then goes off to downstairs HD tv.) I can get just about every channel in analog fairly well with some snow altho channel 9 is pretty much the worse of the worse. I took pictures of the antenna and a picture of how my house is situated on a compass level. The sun comes up directly on the back wall (East) thus making my house side wall North.
From my eye line of sight, I would say the antenna is pointed at 320 to 330 degrees. If it's at 340, it would have to be PRETTY DARN CLOSE to it, but it looks more like 325 to 330. I hope these pictures help tell a better story. As far as trying to aim it now, I can't do it right this instant. When I purchased my home a few years ago, previous owner had jury rigged or shimmied the antenna to the 2x4 using wires to hold it up and not properly supporting it on a mast. I will obviously be taking care of that! After I put it on a mast, I can then aim it more freely instead of fighting to make the wires move that the previous owner had conjured up. Can you tell me what you think?
Here's a funny one - My bedroom tv, I can get 4,5,9 analogs CLEAR but cant get channel 41. Its completely snowy but living room tv and basement tv, I can get them OK with snowy pictures. What the hay?
Anyways - Again thank you for helping me out on this. I appreciate your patience in helping a newbie.
Bradtothebone 11-06-07, 10:58 AM Slick,
OK, here's what I see:
First, your antenna is fine. It is definitely VHF/UHF (the short elements at the front, oriented vertically in a "V" shape, are the UHF). It doesn't appear to be more than a few years old.
Second, if the joist under the compass is running the length of the house, the end wall would be at about 45 degrees west, or 315 degrees. If it's on a joist running along the width of the house, the end wall is about 45 degrees east.
Looking at Antennaweb.org, it looks like you have stations from 348 degrees (WDAF 4.1) to 7 degrees (KSMO 62.1), only a 19-degree range (pretty good). Looks like 355-360 degrees would be a pretty good compromise, if there aren't any tall buildings/water towers/etc. in direct line-of-sight. In other words, your "V"-shaped UHF elements should point almost due north.
After you get the antenna pointed, if you're still getting spotty reception you might want to look at a preamplifier (Channel Master 7777 is a good one for VHF/UFH). The way these work is that there is a power supply that you plug in by a TV somewhere with the coax cable feeding through the power supply. The actual amp is in-line as close to the antenna as you can get it. This means that all splitters between the power supply and the amp need to be able to pass DC current on at least one of the branches. Not all splitters can, but they should be clearly marked if they can do that. As many times as you are splitting, I wouldn't be surprised if you need the preamp. One good place to buy the preamp is http://www.warrenelectronics.com/ but there are others. I live a similar distance from the towers, and my antenna is in the attic with a preamp, and I get G-R-E-A-T reception on all digitals. No reason you can't too.

mgsports 11-07-07, 02:45 PM 35 A&E
77 is gone so Discovery Health probley took it's place
Their could have been some channels added to the Digital Tier but don't know because my Dad's Mom doesn't have Digital Cable and in her Bedroom can pick MYKSMOTV on 118 also but not on the TV in the Basement or Great Room.
dlnester 11-07-07, 06:03 PM TNT-HD that was on TWC QAM Clear is now gone again.
FrugalRacer 11-09-07, 12:37 AM A&E HD and The History Channel HD have shown up on Everest, 664 & 665 respectively ( I think ).
If anyone sees Fox Sports Net HD, please let us know, that's the one I'm looking forward to. :p

It figures -- they added one channel in the year I was with them, and they add 2 within 2 weeks of me leaving. But I'm still thrilled with all the HD I have with DirecTV.
Hey all - it's been a while since my last post. Hope all are doing well.
Is anyone else experiencing audio break up and severe pixelation issues on KMBC (ABC) using an OTA setup? Watching Nov 6th DVR'd episode of Boston Legal and, wow, is it really bad. Ran though all my setup to be sure cables and antenna were still locked in and all was fine. Thought maybe it was a compression issue on the DVR, but other shows (also recorder via OTA) are fine. Also noticed some (but not nearly as bad problems on KMBC shows recorded to a different DVR. Funny thing - a ew weeks back we had the very same problem with Boston Legal - but 3/4 of the way through the show it cleared up and I had no problems again until this week.
So - am alone out there? Anyone have any ideas?
J.

I too was having problems this week with KMBC (DT-07) Over-the-Air. After checking my connections, antenna and three OTA receivers I felt the problem was on KMBC9 transmission or PSIP information. Especially when the problem was also showing up on satellite local HDTV via Dish Network.
Last night KMBC9 OTA was back to being wonderful again for me. :)
mgsports 11-09-07, 09:17 PM The everestkc Website doesn't show them in the Lineup or even a News story on it on the Website.
Comcast here has FSN Midwest HD.
Nothing new from Comcast yet.

I had the same trouble with Boston Legal this week, but with TWC. I also experienced it a few weeks ago. Must be a KMBC issue.
Thanks jeffdbs and mmax. I feel better knowing it's not my gear.
On antother note: we're enjoying all the new HD channels on D*TV - it's awesome to have so much HD content to choose from now.

Since my wife is using the cable box to record a show on Bio, I had an hour this morning to go through the QAM channels to find out if there are any new digital channels. I found these channels now on QAM and I am wondering if Comcast is planning on moving all their channels from analog to digital:
