View Full Version : Kansas City, MO - HDTV
Based on my experience the difference was minimal. I once did a screen comparison and it seemed like the HDMI connection was a little better but not much. The main difference between the 2 is HDMI is a digital connection that can transfer audio, and Component is analog connection.
IMHO, don't buy a Monster HDMI cable for $100 where you can get an HDMI cable from $1 - $30 online or at a computer store. Since the cable is digital, it will either work or not.
thanks for the quick reponse Bongohawk!!!
KC-Technerd 02-11-08, 02:03 PM I’m sure this question has been asked before ( this thread is huge) but does anyone see any beneficial difference between using HDMI or component? i'm using HDMI as of now, but there are some stations that seem washed out...thanks in advance. :D
The advantage I found on using HDMI is that, at least on the video displays I've dealt with, that all digital inputs are treated the same. In other words, if you have a Blu-ray player or DVD player with HDMI output, and you calibrate your display properly for that, then copy those settings for your other digital inputs, such as ATSC tuner, satellite receiver, etc., then those will also be properly calibrated. With analog (such as component video) each unit is different, so you can't use your DVD player to properly calibrate the display for watching your satellite receiver or off-the-air tuner, etc.

Also, from my little testing, have seen how HDMI or DVI seem to handle overscan a lot better than Component. It used to bug me that my TV had like 5- 10 % overscan with Component and with my HDMI connection I can pretty much get it to about 1% overscan.
Looks like Comcast-Olathe has added SciFi Channel (Ch. 194) and USA Network (Ch. 195) in HD. This leaves channels 193, 207, 214, 217 and 218 open. Still waiting for Speed Channel in HD before Thursday....
mgsports 02-11-08, 06:51 PM Don't forget also 190,after KCT4,248,250,251 and so on and also 117. 103 is for Bloomberg News. 161 is for Reelztv,123 for OXYGEN,184 for Jewerly TV and so on is being saved for other channels.
Merv Griffin's Crosswords is in HD and is showed on KMCI. America's Funniest Videos,Still Standing,Degrassi and so on KMCI might also be in HD. The Sports Spot might be in HD in the future.
dlnester 02-14-08, 05:11 PM KMCI-DT has no reason to broadcast in "HD" because none of the programs they air are in HD right now. They do broadcast over the air at 1080i, and just upconvert their 480i signal.
I can recieve all of the Kansas City OTA channels on rabbit ears for the exception of KMBC-DT. I live in the 64138 zip code and I would like to know if there is anything I can get to pick up KMBC-DT.
Keep in mind that KMBC-9 is the only VHF digital channel, so make sure your antenna has VHF and UHF elements. Looking at the analogue channel 9 signal can give you an immediate clue to the problem as well as feedback to antenna changes. If the analogue picture has heavy ghosting there is a multipath problem; picking up the signal from multiple directions. This can be helped by careful antenna aiming or changing the length on the vhf elements. If the picture is snowy the signal strength is low. This can be helped by aiming, adjusting element length or an amplified antenna. If the analogue picture looks good, I would check the digital tuner; maybe entering the actual digital channel number 7, manually.
The normal progression for antenna improvement would be indoor antenna, indoor with amplifier, remote antenna like attic, attic with preamp and/or rotator, outdoor antenna, outdoor with preamp and/or rotator.

Then, after you get frustrated, cable or satellite....:)
mgsports 02-15-08, 06:56 PM Animal Planet HD will be on 193 when Comcast adds it here.
History Channel 177 when it moves to Digital.
JWLTV 184 when it's added.
Why didn't KMBC go with a UHF dt channel ? I remember in the early channel allotments for dtv they had a UHF channel, It would have made life a lot easier.
dlnester 02-16-08, 04:12 PM Well Time Warner Cable took away my ESPN-U on QAM-Clear channel 115-11. :-(
Thankfully in about 10 days I get my HD-DVR and Digital Cable and get it back.
voyager7 02-16-08, 07:05 PM Any word on Everest's plans to expand their HD channel offerrings? Watching the standard definition channels on an HD TV is a pain in the eyes.
dlnester 02-16-08, 07:31 PM No, watching a cable network in SD that is broadcasting HD (Letterboxed) is not fun. My TV doesn't have the "ZOOM" feature for SD broadcasts and I get a nice picture with black bars on all 4 sides.... ahhhhhh!
dlnester 02-17-08, 09:08 PM Does anybody else notice that yellow line on KSHB-DT when they have NBC Network programming on in HD? Is this just a Kansas City thing, or nation-wide on all NBC stations?
I also sometimes notice a blue line on the left side on CW programming that is not in HD on KCWE-DT.
bigitybiggs 02-18-08, 03:17 AM Did anyone with twc have fsn hd tonight I went to watch the two bball games tonight and the channel didn't appear. I have had this channel disappear and reappear several times over the last month. I have contacted them several times about this issue but they don't know why this is happening. It just sucks when you should have the channel and are watching it in sd and several times they mention that this game is in hd.
thanks
creader 02-18-08, 10:04 AM Interesting comment regarding FSN HD on TWC. I am on Comcast, and for several months now have had difficulty getting FSN HD (on 201) and Universal HD channel (on 208). Most of the time I cannot get either one of the channels, but on occasion I can get them for a few minutes or so, but any movements on screen cause considerable pixelation. I realize FSN HD has a test pattern most of the time but I would like to see some of the games they sometimes offer in the evenings, and have been looking forward to some of the Royals games on that channel this spring.
I have had (no exaggeration) 12 Comcast technicians (or their contractors) come out and check everything and they all say the problem appears to be in the main box outside my home (that serves several condos), and they will contact Comcast maintenance to fix it. Months now...and still no fix. My other HD channels, including the ones recently added, look just fine and have never been affected by this erratic behavior.
I am extremely frustrated and have considered switching to satellite dish, but realize it has its own problems that might be worse than what I already experience.
Hope Comcast can figure out whats wrong before the Royals start telecasting some of their games in HD.

I had the exact same problem last night. FSNHD appears and disappears at random. I called TWCKC and she had no idea what was going on but they would look into it.

I have UVerse and noticed that the FSNMW HD feed was missing for parts of this weekend so maybe the issue is with FSN.
OTA Ern 02-18-08, 07:34 PM Here is Aaron Barnhart's (KC Star) DTV Transition article on TV barn.
blogs.kansascity.com/tvbarn/2008/02/the-dtv-transit.html
mgsports 02-18-08, 09:21 PM That article doesn't have Comcast in it. Says KTWU has other channels and it doesn't on Comcast. Also mssing KMCI,MYKSMOTV,KCWE and so on as Secondary Channels and also Metro Sports and FSN Kansas City and other Local channels.
WDAF no Digital Subchannels like Weather one at the Moment.
I like both of those Weather Channels but KMBC's at the moment is going back and forth on Comcast.
I would say either KMIC is coming the RTN Affliate for KC or KHSB is making a Digital Subchannel for it.
You might be thinking of ABC News Now for a Digital Subchannel for Local News or KHSB adding a 24/7 Local Action News Channel because NBC doesn't have NBC News Now and Fox had Fox News Edge before. KC did use to have a Local 24/7 News Channel owned by Sinclair but gone.
Know if KC had a 24/7 Local weather channel that was on all the Systems here meaning no National Weather on it like Metro Weather is and also Metro Sports and KC On Demand that would be good.
KCPT did take my suggestion of a PBS World Channel.
Did you Email KUKC to find out?
dlnester 02-18-08, 09:25 PM KTWU has 3 channels...
KTWU-HD
KTWU-Analog Simulcast
KTWU-PBS World
The Kansas City cable systems don't carry them because they carry the digital offerings of KCPT. But those with an Over-The-Air Antenna can get them from KTWU on RF 23.

lawnchair 02-22-08, 08:33 PM KTWU has 3 channels...
KTWU-HD
KTWU-Analog Simulcast
KTWU-PBS World
I think the third KTWU is mostly PBS Create (same as KCPT subchannel 3 when running). I would love it if one or the other of them picked up PBS World or MHz Worldview. Still, unless the new boxes are really, really good, I don't expect too many people on the Missouri side to get KTWU.
Agree with Barnhart that the two weather feeds are silly. Having one is nice, though. I'm betting that one of the networks will start putting their sister news channel (MSNBC or Fox News?) on digital subchannels of O&O stations.
One other KC question. Any word from people at KUKC (Univision) about when they'll be firing up the digital? I see they have a Class A companion construction permit at 39, and are also looking to boost their analog power and move from 48 to 40-analog (I'm assuming after KSHB 41-analog goes off?). Are they going to try to keep analog on as long as possible, assuming their demographic will be the least likely to get new equipment? There are times when a better signal from them will make me happy (i.e., they were the only way for an OTA guy to watch last night's Clinton-Obama debate).
I am new to Direct TV, will I have to pay more to watch the Royals on the new Fox KC channel?
Thanks
Dave
dlnester 02-23-08, 11:24 AM I am new to Direct TV, will I have to pay more to watch the Royals on the new Fox KC channel?
As long as you subscribe to a package that has your "Regonal Sports Network" included, you will not have to pay anything extra. It will most likely be on one of the FSN Midwest alternate channels. I'm not sure if DirecTV or Dish Network will carry FSN Kansas City full-time since it will have the same programming as FSN Midwest most of the time.
mgsports 02-23-08, 09:48 PM ROYALS AND FSN KANSAS CITY ANNOUNCE TELEVISION SCHEDULE
140 Regular Season and Two Exhibitions Highlight Package
**Kansas City Royals press release**
The Kansas City Royals and Fox Sports Net Kansas City today announced the 142-game television schedule for the 2008 season. Consisting of 140 regular season games and two exhibitions, the 2008 television slate is the largest in franchise history. The Royals and FSN Kansas City will announce at a future date a number of HD telecasts, which will be a first in Royals television history.
Ryan Lefebvre will provide the play-by-play call on all 142 telecasts, while Royals Hall of Famer, Paul Splittorff, will serve as analyst for the majority of the telecasts. Every game on FSN Kansas City will be preceded by a 30-minute pre and post-game show, with Joel Goldberg hosting "Royals Live." The 140-game regular season television schedule features 66 road games and 74 from Kauffman Stadium.
The two exhibition telecasts will be in prime-time from the Royals training facility in Surprise, Arizona, on March 20 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers and March 24 against the Milwaukee Brewers, with each game beginning at 8:05 p.m. (CDT).
"Our partners at FSN Kansas City have assembled the most aggressive television schedule in team history, including telecasts of 82 of the first 88 games," said Mike Swanson, Royals' Vice President of Communications and Broadcasting. "Among the highlights of this multi-year agreement with FSN Kansas City includes Mid-Missouri markets having the opportunity to view more games than ever before. Since our inception, the Royals have been proud of the regionalization of this franchise, and the volume of exposures combined with the number of markets that will receive those exposures only strengthens that sentiment."
"We're excited to launch our new Royals telecast package," said Jack Donovan, FSN Kansas City General Manager and Senior Vice President. "With 142 games and the Royals Live pre- and post-game show surrounding every telecast, fans will be able to watch a full slate of Royals baseball coverage nearly every day of the season."

Sounds good! I'm hoping the non-HD games will look better than broadcasts on The Spot. Metro was marginally better, not by much though.
Heck, I'm just hoping for a 80/82 win season.

lawnchair 02-24-08, 10:00 AM Is KCTV digital-OTA up to speed these days? I'm in Lawrence, and have gotten it well in the past, but not in the last few days (could be longer than that). My rooftop antenna is pushed about 20 deg off right now (too cold to fix), but all the other KC signals are full-bore (including WDAF, so nearby). The analog signal is fine, but on digital I am getting almost nothing.

I'm hoping that even the non-HD games will be broadcast on FSNKC-HD. Even if it's an SD broadcast, it should look MUCH better.
Unfortunately, it appears that FSNKC-HD is always Off Air when not broadcasting an HD event. Hopefully that will change once the season starts.

mgsports 02-25-08, 07:29 PM Do you beleive that none of the Local channels here have a On Demand Channel yet or no other City besides KC has on yet to?
Has been awhile since Comcast has moved a channel to Digital.
But it's rumored that KMCI gets the RTN Affliate and it's not on the Digital side? Why hasen't the Scripps Network annouced yet when KC gets it's RTN Affliate on probley 248 Comcast?
Metro Sports gets to show the taped version of the KU Games.
dlnester 02-25-08, 10:07 PM KMCI-TV isn't going to lose any Big XII games as that is a big money maker for them and some of their highest ratings. If RTN does come to Kansas City, it will be a digital side channel, not on the main channel.
KU Wants their games shown for free on over-the-air stations, not on a pay service like FSN Kansas City like K-State.
Well, for the first time (at least on the KS side) Comcast's FSN-HD channel (201) is showing the St. Louis Blues hockey game. Right now, the pre-game show is on in SD format - let's hope the game is broadcast in HD.

I am having a problem that is a horse of a different color in regards to this. My TV will pick up channel 9 by typing in 9.1 or channel 7. However, on my DHG-HDD250 I can't get it to pick up on either. Is it possible my TV just has a more sensitive tuner? Be nice to be able to record OTA if there was a cable outage. :(

Haha... Yeah I just fixed that. :o)
I just got Dish network installed for the first time. I got the Dish HD package for $29.99, locals for $5.00 and the VIP-722 HD-DVR for $5.98. I hooked up my silver sensor indoor antenna to the OTA tuner on the VIP-722. In my basement in Lees Summit, it scanned all the local channels with good signal strength (even KMBC which is VHF). I can now get the big four in HD through satellite as well as OTA. I can also get the rest through OTA. However, I am not getting program guide for the channels like PBS kids (KCPT 19.4) or qubo (50.3). Is this not possible?
Overall I am pretty impressed with the VIP-722. Also for others that are interested, I signed up through Dishstore.net by calling them and they are giving $100 cash back for that in addition to all the rebates that Dish is giving (3 months free if you sign up for 24 month commitment). Dish also gave me cinemax for 1 cent for a year for signing up for paperless billing. I also got the public interest channels like NASA, CSPAN, CoLours, Free Speech TV for free.
Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Wow. I thought I was the only one who had this issue with Everest. After Lost didn't record right (it picked up NBC instead) I did a channel rescan. It picked up all the above channels as listed above as well as in the correct 600's listing except for FOX and ESPN. When I first got my DHG-HDD250 everything worked great and it picked them up as I expected.
About a month ago I tried to use a CableCard to get the other HD channels but I or the tech couldn't get to work on several tries. That's when i started to get the channels in the locations you list above. And I agree they picked a crappy time to realign the channels.
Out of curiosity are you also using a DHG-HD250/500?

I'm using the HD HomeRun from Silicondust. It's a two tuner box that sends the HD capture to my Windows Media Center 2005 server over Ethernet. It can tune either OTA ATSC or cable unencrypted QAM. Also, I don't pick up any 600 channels, but I don't subscribe to HD, I just have basic cable.

I don't subscribe either. Well I did for about 72 hours but I couldn't get the CableCard to work. With exception for the last month my clear QAM channels have always shown up in the 600's like it would if you used one of their boxes. I just thought it might have been my DVR that was showing the signal location versus where the channel was supposed to be located. Based on your experience I'm not alone.
mgsports 03-05-08, 10:08 AM Time Warner delays channel change
Not sure if it was something I said, but in answer to Julie Turner Ruskin and other readers ...
Being a political junky, and a regular watcher of MSNBC, I was glad to have the information you posted in your article yesterday. I informed other friends of the change, since we are all following the primary today. What happened? Checked 56 and 28 today. Still the same. Did they decide to wait? When will the change occur?
... Time Warner has moved back the shuffle at least a week, to March 11. Of course, other changes are scheduled for the 12th, so maybe all of them will happen at once.
Meanwhile, my house, and about 100,000 others in the metro area, have been Navigatored.
Comcast Olathe users on your rescan are you picking up like Animal Planet,Fox Business Channel,NHL Network and so on in HD and like FITTV,Bloomberg News and so on in SD?
Anyone know if Comcast (Independence) messed up their cable system so that the most local broadcasts are no longer available on clear QAM. I used to be able to get ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, Fox, PBS and sub channels on QAM. Now, I only get KCTV (CBS). Luckily I have an antenna that I can use.

alphanguy 03-06-08, 05:02 PM Why didn't KMBC go with a UHF dt channel ? I remember in the early channel allotments for dtv they had a UHF channel, It would have made life a lot easier.
I'd like to know the answer to this, too. now those of us with antennas either have to purchase a much more expensive combo antenna, or have seperate VHF/UHF just for one station. I guess maybe they think everyone who gets OTA already HAS a combo... but mine is old and worn out, and I have to buy new... but I'm not playing that game. I am far enough east of KC so that I am 78 miles from the transmitter of KMIZ in Columbia (their transmitter is about 20 miles west of Columbia in Moniteau county) And all I have to do is buy the Terrestrial digital XG-91 (UHF only), and it will come in fine, HALF THE SIZE of a comparable combo unit, about 60 bucks less as well. So if any of you guys live east of Route 131 in Lafayette/Johnson counties..... you could most liekly do this, too. You must have that rotor (Most of us out here have rotors anyway for KMOS) I would have been happy to get locals through my dish, but due to the greediness of local affiliates and their association, I can't get them ALL.. so I choose to stay with OTA. The law needs to be changed so that anyone who has satellite service can puchase the local channel of ANY station that is within 100 miles of their physical address. (Exceptions to be made for areas which are VERY VERY remote) I'm all for people not receiving DISTANT networks....but my opinion is that it would be best if say.... the FCC would determine the geographical CENTER of a local market, then, by zip code, allow viewers who are roughly more than 25 miles from the geographical center of the market, to purchase from their satellite provider, the locals of the adjacent market. So if you lived in Sedalia, you could purchase Columbia/Jeff City OR Kansas City, or BOTH.
KC-Technerd 03-07-08, 12:02 AM I remember hearing some time ago that after the analog stations go away, that the stations will be going back their actual channel. Hence 4, 5 and 9 will all eventually become VHF stations again anyway.
I'm not sure if this is true. It seems like an unreasonable expense for a station to have to get a digital transmitter, only to later change to different broadcast channel, particularly switching from UHF to VHF.
LukeSkiewalker 03-07-08, 01:02 AM I guess I am a little confused about KMBC. I though VHF was dedicated to channels 2-13 and UHF was channels 14-69. If this is not the case then it explains why my DHG HDD-250 isn't picking up KMBC and my TV's tuner is. The specifications for the DHG say that it picks up channels how I listed it above. I realize there is more involved like the mhz frequency they broadcast at so does this mean KMBC operates on a UHF frequency that is broadcast on a VHF channel? When it comes to the science behind broadcast TV my knowledge is lacking.

We need the expertise of Technical Italian, the technician from KMBC to respond to these questions. Anyone know if he still browses the boards?
DurhamHusker 03-07-08, 10:02 AM The FCC is auctioning off the bandwidth currently occupied by channels 52-69. After the digital TV switch next Feb the old analog transmitters will be turned off. At that time many digital transmitters will move to the original channel. Some will stay where they are now. Others will move to a totally different channel.
Today, KMBC is broadcasting digital on channel 7. After the digital switch, they will turn off the analog transmitter, and move their digital transmitter to channel 9.
Today, KCTV is broadcasting digital on channel 24. After the digital switch, they will turn off the analog transmitter, but the digital transmitter will stay at 24.
Today, KMCI out of Lawrence is broadcasting digital on channel 36. After the digital switch, they will turn off the analog transmitter, but the digital transmitter will not stay put, and it will not move to it's original analog channel of 38, either. It will move to 41.
I don't know what the rules are, but channels will move around next Feb, and KMBC will be one of them. Channel 9 should offer better reception in the area vs KMBC DT's current physical location of channel 7.
Here's a link to all current and future digital TV physical channel locations for the state of Kansas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_stations_in_Kansas
The latest DTV Table of Allotments can be found at www.fcc.gov/dtv. Scroll down to 8/6/07, appendix B for the list. KMBC wll end up on channel 9. I did see on the original final table of allotments released in 1998 (I am not making this up) that 9 was going to be on 14 at that time. By the time I had my first digital receiver they were on channel 7. The rest are staying where they are at now.
Yes, VHF is from channels 2-13 and UHF is from 14 to 69. UHF above 51 will go away next year.
And yes, the newest tuners with the 5th generation chip sets are much more forgiving of multipath interference than the older tuners. So one tv might receive a channel fine while another does not. With digital, you will get a good picture right up to the very edge of the reception window.
LukeSkiewalker 03-07-08, 11:51 AM I understand that 52-69 are part of the FCC 700 block auctions. I still don't understand why Channel 9 is considered a UHF station when it is broadcast as a VHF station signifier.
Dbdoc your explanation of the chipsets for the tuners makes sense to me. I know my TV has a new chipset than my DVR. So That part of my question is answered. I doubt I will ever understand the UHF/VHF issue with Channel 9, but I would like to thank you guys for trying to explain it to a n00b like me :-D
sneaky snooper 03-07-08, 12:15 PM KMBC has a request to move to 29 due to the fact its cheaper to refit 29's xmitr for digital.

alphanguy 03-07-08, 05:01 PM I just heard about this as well!!! This is a WISE move for channel 9 to make. Let's just hope that the FCC grants their request. Many, I mean MANY people are purchasing new antennas this year, especially out here in the rural areas, not wanting to be left out in the cold after 2/17/09. People are afraid that digital is not as reliable, will not travel as far, etc... and they are beefing up their equipment to be sure. Since KMBC would be the ONLY VHF station left in the market, then it makes total sense to put them on 29, reduction of problems with intereference, everything would work better. Not to mention.... if they didn't change, they may lose several thousand viewers in the eastern part of the vieweing area... me being one of them. I'm purchasing a new, high gain antenna, but it's going to be UHF only. I don't want the size and ugliness of my 16 foot combo anymore. An 8 foot UHF only is HALF as ugly. So many people will jsut tune into KMIZ-17 for their ABC network in the east area... especially viewers in Pettis and Saline counties, and those in Lafayette and Johnson counties who ar east of Route 13... anyone east of Route 13 can pull in KMIZ-17 easily and reliably with a good rooftop UHF only antenna.

Channel 9 is not a UHF station. It is the ONLY digital channel (channel 7) that is currently transmitting on VHF in the Kansas City area. All the other digital channels in the area are transmitting on UHF.

I will tell you that KCTV does compress the 5.2 signal a lot so that the HD picture stays sharp. In the first year KCTV aired 3 games, 1 on Analog, 1 in HD, and one on 5.2 but last year the Analog and HD were usually the same broadcast with an extra game on 5.2
KU/KSU will always be on the main channel when playing.

OTA Ern 03-12-08, 11:42 PM Multicasting March Madness rules. My wife doesn't like it though...
LukeSkiewalker 03-13-08, 01:36 AM KCTV multicast is now listed in the Everest guide on channel 621 or channel 81-4 on QAM
bocktar 03-13-08, 11:07 AM The effect that multicasting during the NCAA Tournament has on the primary feed is just awful. I think I'd rather them just downconvert all four HD feeds to 16x9 480p and multicast them all than try to claim that the primary feed is anything that remotely resembles an HD broadcast.
bongohawk 03-14-08, 12:25 AM What is with KCTV 5 DT 5.1 showing Gray Bars on the left and right sides? I just noticed this tonight. Whenever they are showing "local programming" the Gray Bars appear. KCTV 5.2 has replaced their color bars with a simple screensaver that shows their logo and the Final Four Logo.
bongohawk 03-15-08, 02:58 PM I hate how we get ESPN HD blocked and are forced to watch Channel 38 in SD!!! I realize that advertising rules this, but you would think they could just show the simulcast HD feed with the "Local Announcers" and during commercials show the local spots on 38. I know 38 has a digital signal, I am watching it now, but I am not sure they have the equipment. So far the last 3 years it has been this way. Since we are in the local market we get the crappy SD feed. I probably sound like an HD snob, but it is just frustrating knowing this being shot in HD and I can't watch it.
dlnester 03-15-08, 03:14 PM Not only having to know it is being shot in HD, but being forced to watch the crappy-at-best feed that 38 The Spot and KSNT are given.
It's tough not to jump in on this one. So I'm going to jump in. It is absurd that we have to watch an inferior (by far!) feed of the Big XII Semi's. "The Spot" is atrocious. I hope this changes in the future. Stinko! Argh!

dlnester 03-16-08, 12:00 AM You can't put all the blame on 38 The Spot, I think the feed from ESPN + is bad... KSNT is just as bad as 38.
lawnchair 03-16-08, 01:29 PM According to the FCC database, it looks like KUKC (Univision low-power) has dropped their construction permit to move from analog 48 to analog 40 (and increase ERP from 13kW to 150kW). They do still have a companion digital channel (RF 39, 15kW) construction permit. Perhaps they were mostly interested in the "channel 40" to preserve the right to a larger (KC covering) signal, and now that they have the DTV CP that covers the larger range, they don't have to act like they are going to actually build a 150kW analog transmitter.
mgsports 03-16-08, 07:09 PM http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/programming/broadcast-market.php?dma_name[]=Kansas%20City theirs also KCTV5DT3 and KPXEDT 2 thru 4.
March Madness begins on KCTV-5, and if you have digital cable or similar means, you can watch extra NCAA tournament games on KCTV’s second digital channel (that’s Channel 1452 on Time Warner Cable; the three other area providers also carry it) all the way through the Sweet 16.
Now here’s the tricky part: If you have a digital cable box, even if it’s not hooked up to a HDTV set, you should be able to tune in that second digital channel because it won’t be in HD.
That’s true, by the way, of KMBC’s and KSHB’s digital weather channels as well. Speaking of weather, you might want to say a prayer for clear skies, so that you-know-who doesn’t pre-empt the games.
dlnester 03-16-08, 10:07 PM KCTV-DT tried a 5.3 for the tournament a couple years ago but degraded the picture too much so they dropped it.

msglsmo 03-20-08, 12:37 AM Hi All,
Quick question for everyone here.
I live out in the SE part of Lee's Summit, near the LS High School. We currently have DISH and subscribe to locals and HD locals from DISH. Both of our DISH boxes also have OTA HD tuners in them and I use a pair of $8 rabbit ears from Wal-Mart to pull in OTA HD locals.
The $8 rabbit ears work well most of the time. All of the signal levels that we get are in the upper 60's to the 80's. However, there are times when the OTA signals just drops. I believe it's mostly due to trees, wind, weather, etc.
What type of regular attic OTA antenna setup would I need out here in LS?
Can anyone recommend a good company to come out and put one up? What kind of pricing can I expect?
Thanks!
Mike

I don't like the channel. I wish they would take it off because I never watch it. I don't really think it's getting them any new customers or getting current customers to upgrade service. I would be happier if they added a different Qam-Clear channel that actually has HD content.
Every time I've checked the dual feeds, they're showing the same game. This is pointless. Granted, I haven't been sitting here all day watching b-ball, but it doesn't really seem like they're taking advantage of having two feeds.
Problem is since both channels are on flex feed, CBS can air any game that is more intersting than those that were originally scheduled and as a result for a good part of last night's coverage 5.1 and 5.2 aired the same games most of the time.
dlnester 03-22-08, 04:21 PM While it was mentioned earlier that 88 Kansas City Royals games will be broadcast in HD on FSN Kansas City HD, here is a list of the schedule:

This includes opening day at Detroit and that entire series, and opening day in Kansas City against the Yankee's and that entire series in Kansas City.

Can someone post all the channels that are available in KC as of today. I just got my box today and I'd love to know what channels I can get and what's available that I"m not receiving.
Thank you.

KTWU-DT is broadcast on UHF channel 23 at 960,000 watts from Topeka, Kansas. KTWU-DT has an application on file to move to VHF 11 once the analog transmitter is turned off and to operate at 15,400 watts. The station passes PBS-HD programming in 1080i and multicasts 2 other streams. The KTWU-DT tower is located just north of I-70 and Wanamaker Road in Topeka.
KTWU-DT 11.1 - PBS-HD

The station passes ABC-HD programming in 720p. The station carries a local weather channel on their sub-channel 49.2. The KTKA-DT tower is located southwest of Topeka.
KQTV-DT ABC ST. JOSEPH, MO (Analog 2 - Digital 53)
KQTV-DT is broadcast on UHF channel 53 at 1,000,000 watts. The tower is located in St. Joseph, Missouri. (Sorry, I don't know too much about this station or if it is currently broadcasting anything in HD)
Because KQTV's digital channels are currently on a band of UHF which will be no longer in use after the February 17, 2009 cutoff date for analog television broadcasting (channels 52 to 69), it seemed likely that KQTV will move their digital signals to their current analog channel assignments. However, their current analog channel assignment is in the low band of VHF (channels 2 to 6), which is more prone to interference from atmospheric conditions than higher channel numbers. For this reason, KQTV will be switching to channel 7 when KMBC-TV switches its digital signal to channel 9 when the switchover occurs.

dlnester 03-25-08, 10:09 AM What is sad is how Comcast is so far ahead than Time Warner. Time Warner doesn't even have CNN or TBS in HD... AND THEY OWN THE FREAKIN' NETWORKS!!!!!!!
blueparkway 03-25-08, 02:15 PM I understand that Everest has been moving around the DT channels for those, like me, who don't suscribe to their HD stuff or have their HD tuner box. Well today I lost KSHB and the weather plus channel. I wondered if anyone knows where it is at. On a scan it came at 630 and 631, but wouldn't come in at 110.2 and 110.3. Now 630 and 631 are gone, but TNT comes in at 600. Any help would be nice.
Also when they do put FSN midwest KC in HD on the lineup, will it be for free so I can find it on a scan or will I have to get a HD tuner equipment from the cable company?
bphisig 03-25-08, 03:46 PM When I woke up this morning, I found that my SA 8300 HD DVR was running the new Navigator software. It changed all my recorded shows titles to "unknown" and for some reason, there was an episode of PTI from President's day, when I know for a fact it was not there when i went to bed last night. So I can't confirm whether or not it deleted anything I had saved.
I noticed that not all of my season passes were carried over correctly, and that some of them were set to record on both the digital and analog channels. Kind of weird. Some of my season passes disappeared altogether.

blueparkway 03-25-08, 09:42 PM Lost TNT on rescan. Well I found it on 119.1
blueparkway 03-25-08, 10:31 PM Found the TNT at 119.1 and not thru 600 which I was getting for two days after I did the first scan.
Now I ask did something go wrong with the NBC feeds? Can't find them. Missing KSHB DT and Weather Plus. Could also be I don't know the number.

I was changed over to Navigator yesterday when I turned on the TV. I had no lost shows, all my scheduled recordings were transferred correctly, and my same PIN number still worked. I did have to change a couple of settings in the SETUP menu, like the start-up channel and a couple of other items.
The only think I think I have to do is reprogram a couple of buttons on my universal remote to match a couple of the new functions of Navigator.
Maybe I am the first one in the service area to have it work correctly?
Mike
^ No noticeable problems with our Navigator upgrade yesterday either.

Oddly enough, I thought we were all set to go on TWC in KC, because we have FSNMW-HD, but as of right now, it looks like we'll see the Cardinals on Monday. I thought that maybe it would somehow change to FSNKC-HD, but not yet.
Does anyone have any insight on the whole FSNMW vs. FSNKC scenario?

Why is this outrageous? You're the one who wants 2 $300 Tivos and is willing to pay Tivo $30/mo for guide data...

You will either pay rental for the cable card or rental for the cable box. You could rent two dual-tuner HD-DVR's from Everest for $13.45 for the first one and $21.80 for the second one, or a total of $35.25.
At least with the Cable Card it is only costing you $20 for two HD DVR's with your cable service.
Their packages that include HD typically include and HD-DVR. You can probably negotiate a swap for two of the cable cards, then you are talking about only $10 per month additional versus the $21.80 you would pay for the second HDDVR.
But, remember everything is negotiable. Especially if you are not under a contract and are willing to sign a contract for one or two years.

mgsports 03-27-08, 09:39 PM KS area,KC area and Northwestern MO it is FSN KC and the rest of MO is I think FSN Midwest. On S. Dish and AT&T U-Verse you get both channels.
Probley some new HD channels on TWCKC soon because Time Warner has been adding a lot recently.
It says FSNHD on 201 on Comcast but on 73 it says FSNKC.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20245456-Central-IL-Updates?r=202 has a post about FSN Midwest.
Maybe one of the Local Channels here can show Cardinals Games or have both FSN KC and FSN Midwest in the Lineup.
Heads you might see Comcast here put On Demand Link Channels in between the Encore Channels because that's what they are doing on April 1st for New Jersey Customers.
Jayhawk 03-28-08, 09:09 AM Time Warner
Kansas City area
HD: channel 1496
Well, it's now Friday, 3 days away from the home opener, and TWCKC still shows channel 1496 as FSNMW-HD, not FSNKC-HD. Their schedule shows the Cardinals game at 3:00 on Monday...no mention of the Royals.
I'm hoping someone at Time Warner is going to make the change before Monday, but as each day goes on, I lose a little more hope.
After all of their screw ups, I actually would be more surprised if they fixed it by Monday, than if they didn't.
newportdadde 03-28-08, 10:51 AM I have expanded basic cable with Comcast out of Independence. My new HDTV has a QAM tuner and I'm able to pick up some digital channels but they are all in 480i.
Does Comcast block all HD channels if you don't subscribe to their HD package? I had hoped to at least get the local channels in HD along with my regular analog cable package.
olathebob 03-28-08, 10:52 AM Jayhawk, I have the same concern with Comcast. Their Channel 201 is labeled FSNMW-HD, not FSNKC-HD. The program guide shows "Off Air" for Monday's Royals game at noon, but shows the Cardinals game at 3. The standard def feed on Channel 73 DOES show the Royals game at noon. So yesterday, I called the Royals and spoke with Dave H. (Can't remember his last name) in the media department who told me he had just yesterday morning received assurances from Fox Sports that the high def feed would indeed be on Channel 201 on Comcast. I can only guess that it will be the same for Time Warner on channel 1496. But feel free to call him yourself to verify, since he seemed to have the latest information on all of the cable and satellite outlets after receiving his communication from Fox yesterday.
bongohawk 03-28-08, 11:50 AM I would think the local cable companyies would be required by MLB to ONLY show the Royals game on their FSHMW-HD feed, because the Cardinals are "out of our market", and will chang the feed to show the Royals vs the Tigers.
With Dish network they display all of the FSN markets, but when I select the Cardinals game it says something like I can't view this channel due to it being outside my coverage area. However, on the FSN Alternate feed I see the Royals vs Tigers and I can view that channels, or at least setup to record it.

Bob/Bongohawk,
Thanks for the updates. I'll feel better when Time Warner actually makes the change on our system.
I'm assuming that since FSNKC is an actual channel, that we will see that listed instead of FSNMW...but who knows.
Bongohawk, you mentioned that you see the Royals on an alternate channel on Comcast. Does the channel actually say FSNKC?

Bongohawk, you mentioned that you see the Royals on an alternate channel on Comcast. Does the channel actually say FSNKC?
Actually I have Dish Network and it is listed under as "ALT" under the FSN MW Alternate channels.
So I was wondering if FSN KC was going to be a completely new channel added, but it looks like FSN MW will be the channel and then the cable companies will then pass through the feed of FSN KC through FSN MW. I guess they could choose to re-label the channel as FSN KC. This is just a big guess, and i don't have any facts to back this up. I guess we will see when the Royals season starts up on Monday.

Sometime this afternoon, FSN MW disappeared. Right now, nothing is listed for channel 1496. Hopefully they're working on it, and FSN KC will show up in the next day or so!
rrostie 03-29-08, 01:07 PM All channels in KC?
Can someone post all the channels that are available in KC as of today. I just got my box today and I'd love to know what channels I can get and what's available that I"m not receiving.
Thank you.
Bill
I know this is late, but Titantv.com hase a pretty good list of the available channels. I use it for OTA but they also have listings for cable and satelite.
Since I use my laptop in the living room a lot, sometimes I'll look at Titantv instead of the TVGOS guide on my Sony DVR.

Reviews seem to be mixed, but generally negative and yes - crashing is a problems with many, but not all units.
Yeah, I've been reading that thread off and on for over a year and hoping that by the time it got to us they'd have it figured out.
Now I'm just trying to figure out if it's my box or the software in general. There's no point in taking the box back for a different one if this is just the way it is.

netvizier 03-30-08, 09:23 AM I am currently a Time Warner Cable customer, but I am getting fed up with picture quality issues and the lack of more HD channels.
Picture quality issues:
a) Pixelization in HD content. This is especially apparent when watching football games.
b) Color depth issues in HD content. This is especially apparent when watching underwater scenes in nature shows where there are alot of gradients of blue.
Lack of more HD channels:
Time Warner Cable currently offers about 27 HD channels, including premium channels, whereas DIRECTV currently offers over 90 HD channels!
My sense is that Time Warner has reached the bandwidth capacity of their cable network and they are resorting to increasing the amount of compression in their signal to try and compensate, and that this naturally results in the above mentioned picture quality issues, and contributes to their inability to provide more HD channels which each require considerable bandwidth. Would you agree?
So, I'm seriously considering switching to DIRECTV, but I have several concerns:
1) For those of you who have made the switch from Time Warner Cable to DIRECTV, what overall feedback or guidance can you share with me? And most importantly, are you happy that you switched?
2) I live near the bottom of a hill in OP, and I'm not sure that there is a line of sight from my house to the right area of the sky for DIRECTV. Do you think this will be a problem?
3) Is the picture quality of DIRECTV better or worse than Time Warner Cable? Does DIRECTV transmit HD channels in 720p or 1080i? I ask because I heard that they transmit some lesser resolution referred to as HDlite.
4) Is the picture quality of DIRECTV significantly affected by bad weather?
5) What about local channels -- do you get them via DIRECTV?
6) Does DIRECTV offer equipment as good or superior to the Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD-DVR?
7) I currently expand the storage of the SA 8300 HD-DVR with an eSATA external hard drive. Can I do the same with the DIRECTV equipment?
Thank you,
nv
dlnester 03-30-08, 12:04 PM So, I'm seriously considering switching to DIRECTV, but I have several concerns:

I'm switching from TWC to Dish Network on Monday... can't help you on this one. I know since my brother has DirecTV that his picture quality is pretty good. Remember that DirecTV is also compressing the signal like TWC. This is the ONLY way they can provide service.
2) I live near the bottom of a hill in OP, and I'm not sure that there is a line of sight from my house to the right area of the sky for DIRECTV. Do you think this will be a problem?
The Dish Network and DirectTV satellites are pretty high in the sky. I believe if you stand outside and raise your arm to about 45-50 degrees or higher that is approx. where the Satellite's are located. The DirecTV satellites are closer to due South, with Dish Network mostly South West.
3) Is the picture quality of DIRECTV better or worse than Time Warner Cable? Does DIRECTV transmit HD channels in 720p or 1080i? I ask because I heard that they transmit some lesser resolution referred to as HDlite.
You can read all about DirecTV's "HD Lite" problem over at http://www.dbstalk.com Just search for it.
4) Is the picture quality of DIRECTV significantly affected by bad weather?
The weather will have no affect on picture quality. You'll either have a signal or no signal. Sometimes freezing of the screen right before it goes out. These are minor problems, and usually only last a few minutes until the "rain shaft" passes your house.
5) What about local channels -- do you get them via DIRECTV?
In Kansas City you get all the local channels except KTAJ which is the TBN affiliate. (You can get TBN National on a different channel) You get ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX in HD via the DirecTV satellite, and I hear PBS-HD is coming soon.
6) Does DIRECTV offer equipment as good or superior to the Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD-DVR?
Almost all of Dish Network and DirecTV equipment is better than the Scientific Atlanta products (in my opinion)
7) I currently expand the storage of the SA 8300 HD-DVR with an eSATA external hard drive. Can I do the same with the DIRECTV equipment?
Not so sure about DirecTV, but you can do this with the Dish Network VIP622 and VIP722 DVR's. Their is a one-time charge to activate it on your account.
msglsmo 03-30-08, 04:33 PM 1. I switched from TWC to DirecTV and was not happy. Generally the costs and product was better, but I had a poor installation I think. Switched from DirecTV to DISH and have been very happy.
2. Do a Google search for DISH/DirecTV pointers. Punch in your zip code and it will tell you.
3. I like the fact the DISH's channels are ALL digital, not just some. Makes a big difference on a NON-HD channel. I personally feel that DISH's HD is better than DirecTV and TWC.
4. I had a lot of rain fade issues with DirecTV, but have not had any with DISH.
5. I get my locals from DISH and I had Antenna Masters out of Overland Park installed an over the air antenna as well. DISH's HD receivers integrate the OTA signals and satellite signals. Both show up in the guide and it allows you to have an extra tuner!
6. Both DirecTV's and DISH's HD DVR's are far superior to the Scientific Atlanta onces that TWC uses. I haven't heard too many people who will tell you otherwise.
7. Not sure about the DirecTV DVR's, but you can with the DISH DVR's.

mgsports 03-30-08, 05:46 PM Hallmark Movie Channel HD launches, appropriately, with a new high-def movie, “Son of the Dragon,” starring the apparently ageless David Carradine. As of this writing, it’s not being offered on Time Warner Cable, which put us all through the wringer last month shuffling channels around — ostensibly to make room for more services like Hallmark Movie Channel HD. Comcast says it plans to add the channel in early April ... but in standard, not high, definition.
Also in Today's TV Guide it talks about Royals Games in Hd and more next week in it about home many Games will be in HD and so on.
Jayhawk 03-31-08, 11:16 AM 2 hours and counting until first pitch, and Time Warner still doesn't have FSN-KC HD in the guide. FSN-MW HD disappeared on Friday, and reappeared this morning, but it still shows the Cardinals game at 3:00.
I just knew they'd figure out a way to screw this up.

I wouldn't worry about it honestly. When I had Comcast last season, FSNMW-HD listed the Cardinals games that were broadcast in HD as well but always blacked them out. I currently have U-Verse and it says the Cardinals game is on at 3 as well but I imagine the Royals will be on at noon (I hope).
reuthermonkey 03-31-08, 11:38 AM I am currently a Time Warner Cable customer, but I am getting fed up with picture quality issues and the lack of more HD channels.
I contacted a TW rep last week, and they said that they'll be adding more HD channels over the summer as current technology upgrades allow.
In other words, no new HD until SDV arrives to this market. I can wait another 2 or 3 months.
Picture quality issues:
a) Pixelization in HD content. This is especially apparent when watching football games.
This can be seen OTA also, so I don't believe it's TW's fault. I believe it's compression from our local affiliates.
b) Color depth issues in HD content. This is especially apparent when watching underwater scenes in nature shows where there are alot of gradients of blue.
I know exactly what you're talking about (I see it with blacks on HDTheater/NatGeoHD/HDNet) and it annoys the hell out of me. I can't get any satellite service where I live (building codes) so I don't know if it's a channel issue, or if it's TW downgrading quality. At least what I see with TW doesn't hold a stick to Comcast's horrible degradation.

I made the switch about three months ago to DTV. In general for HD I think it is great. The sound and the picture quality are excellent. I have had a few slight issues with the new HR21 box, it seems to have fixed itself with updates over the last few weeks.
The only downfall is the guide and the way the chanels are laid out. I used to be able to actually surf the channels with TWC, with DTV it is almost impossible because there is such a lag between switching channels. I now have to surf through the guide, and not the actual channels. There is just a little too much junk on DTV. I know I can delete them from the menus and have done this, but channel flipping is nearly impossible with a 4 to 5 second delay between changing channels.
The HR21 box seems to be very good once the bugs have been worked out, and the choice of HD channels is very strong. Truthfully when cable catches up I will probably trade back to cable, but that is probably a year or more away. Until then I will stick with DTV.

Assuming it is on, it'll be OK, but it makes it extremely difficult to record the games. ;-)

bongohawk 03-31-08, 03:15 PM I know this doesn't help the Comcast or TWC crowd, but I watched the 1st inning at home with Dish Network on their HDALT feed, and it looked pretty good in HD. Much much better improvement in picture quality compared to the days of RSTN. I may actually watch more televised Royals games if they are in HD.

Yep, and as of sometime this afternoon, they corrected the grid to correctly show the Royals. Previously, it still said Off Air.
Now if they could just correct it so we could "Record Series" we'd be good to go.

c627627 04-01-08, 01:19 AM Time Warner KC metro people, is this new guide a total disaster or what? I get:
1. Slower FF/REW, much slower FF/REW in fact.
2. What happened to the 15 minute FF/REW? I read the new manual, no it doesn't "activate" when you press any of the arrows.
3. Screen saver does not cover entire screen on HD channels.
4. Guide > Fav > results in channels being changed, not guide simply displaying Fav channel content as it did before.
5. Pressing List does not go back to the previously viewed listing.
And that's just on top of my head and that's not even counting random reboots. Lots of them.

I did a manual record while I was at work, and checked it when I got home. The game did record on Comcast channel 201 in HD. The program grid never did reflect the fact that a Royals game was on at that time. One thing I also noticed...It said in the paper that FSN would replay the Royals game at 7pm. They did replay it on the standard def channel, but it was not on the HD channel 201.
Time Warner KC metro people, is this new guide a total disaster or what? I get:
The new guide is not an improvement. Rewind is very annoying. You rewind to the spot you want and hit play and it jumps forward, similar to how it jumps backward on FF. Not a useful feature for rewind.

It disappeared in Vista Media Center for me as well. I noticed it after I added 5.2. I attempted to manually add 4.1, and if I remember correctly, it asked me to input the frequency the channel uses. I didn't have to do that for any of the other channels I added. I didn't know what to put in so I still don't have it. I thought it was just my computer but now it sounds like the listings provider has excluded it from the listings.

But when manually adding WDAF-DT you need to tell it where to look. (I really wish MCE had channel scan capabilities.)
Anyway, WDAF-DT broadcasts on physical channel 34. You can go to http://antennaweb.org/ and click "choose antenna", enter your zip code (or your street address if you prefer), and it gives you all kinds of good info for ota signals in your area.
I guess I'll have to do some digging as to why WDAF is suddenly gone. Seems like a wide spread problem.
Oh, bother!
Vince2909 04-04-08, 02:07 PM The new guide is not an improvement. Rewind is very annoying. You rewind to the spot you want and hit play and it jumps forward, similar to how it jumps backward on FF. Not a useful feature for rewind.
I agree that this new Navigator from TWC is a PoS. I have an SD box in the bedroom that was upgraded about six months ago so I knew back then to dread the day my HD box was upgraded.
One thing in addition to what's been noted is that on my SD channels they constantly revert to 4:3 LB where as before I set the box to stretch 4:3 and never had to change it. The new Navigator, I stretch a channel, change channel and have to stretch it again...thing is irritating and starting to piss me off.
hendooman 04-04-08, 03:14 PM I guess we don't have Fox Sports - Kansas City HD on D*. I have a channel 648-1 for no reason! I am not really sure who to even get mad at!
You know you are not alone. I did not get it for the first game. Then for the second game I activated the sports pack just to see if it worked and it did, I got the game on 648-1. Wednesday's game was in HD also but not on 648-1 but on 725-1...
D** does not understand that they have a programming error, we should not have to have the sports pack to watch the game. Other people on dbstalk are having issues also, hopefully it will get figured out by the end of the week. It is ridiculous that the people that are employed at D* do not know what they are talking about.

dlnester 04-04-08, 09:30 PM KSHB-DT AND KMCI-DT are both sporting animated HD Sidebars. While KSHB-DT just says that... KMCI-DT scrolls "38 The Spot"
mgsports 04-04-08, 09:48 PM What channel is on your system then if you have it?
I hope the KC Systems added IT before next month.
Good ABC Family HD on 229 now Comcast so not waiting for another to be annouced channel at the moment.

Maybe more Additions and channels moving this week for Comcast.
190,207,228 and so on still available for more HD Channels. 235 is probley for KMCI HD. Also 238 and 239,245,246,248 are available to.
They could have put the Sportsman Channel on 271 and 278 could have been saved for FITTV.
dlnester 04-04-08, 09:49 PM It's called an antenna... and I have it hooked up to my Dish Network VIP722. KMCI-DT is very real. It is on UHF 36 mapped down to 38.1 and broadcasting in 1080i.
I guess next week ABC Family HD will be on 229 Comcast.
It's there now (as of 4:00 AM on 04/05/2008).

OK get this on Sunday we were not getting the game on 648-1 like we should have. My wife searches for Royals in the online spelling guide, it finds it on 648-1 she selects it from the list and boom it is on! Now that blows my mind! I sill don't know who to get mad at....
KSBugeater 04-08-08, 11:14 AM I picked the Royals game out of the guide on the HR20 on Saturday night and it recorded with no issues Sunday afternoon. I don't know why it has to be so flaky, but I am going to be majorly ticked if it misses the home opener today. I should have set a backup recording on 648.
TigerJon 04-08-08, 11:20 AM As some of you may recognize my name, I have been having a tough time getting everything hooked up to my new Sony LCD. Originally hooked it up a week ago today and everything in the way of the DVR to the TV was working fine. On Saturday I unhooked everything to work on an AVR issue and to clean up some of the cable clutter. When I re-hooked everything I noticed some problems with my cable service. Some channels would not stretch even though I change the picture size setting in the DVR menu. Some would stretch but when I'd change channels and return it would be back to 4:3. Some of the HD channels wouldn't stretch either. Also, the picture quality on the SD channels was pretty bad.
Thinking I may have screwed something up on the TV, I took the DVR upstairs and hooked it to another TV. Same thing. Called TW and I was asked "did you unplug the DVR before you unhooked the coax" to which I answered I did not remember. Apparantly, this can throw the DVR out of whack. Anyway, the CSR told me she was not receiving a signal from my DVR that told her the problem was probably the DVR.
Took it back to the TW store on Monday where they hooked it up and said there wasn't a problem with it so it must have worked itself out. They told me to take it back home and try it again but they set up a service call for me on Sat. Got it home to find that now the picture quality of the SD channels had improved but most of the channels still wouldn't stretch at all or would but would go bach to 4:3 after changing the channel.
So, my question is; has anyone experienced this problem with the TW SA HD8300? If so should I just take it back, get another DVR, and cancel the service call? Thanks for any help.
Jon

It worked the same way for us on the Home Opener...
You go to the guide where you spell by name, typed in Yankees @ Royals, selected the channel from there on 648-1, and boom it popped on. This really solidifies that D** has a programming error on their end. And I did this with the HR21, so it looks to have the same problem on the HR20
KSBugeater 04-09-08, 12:56 PM cmb7869, where do you live? My recordings from yesterday were fine. I picked them out of the guide for 648-1 (the first one; I don't know why there are 2 648-1s) and they played back later perfectly. So far the only games I've missed were the 1st two.
If you live too far east of Kansas City, you may be in Cards territory or like Iowa where the HD broadcasts are limited.
cmb7869 04-10-08, 10:43 AM I like in Spring Hill, KS just south of Olathe. In the guide, I don't even shot the game on 648-1.

Yes, Leawood, KS here. E 13 error. Called twckc. They still have the recording that HD boxes are down in the area. I talked to someone to see if it's an HD server problem, or strictly the HDC boxes being affected. Sounds like a server problem. Started this morning. They had no idea when they'd get it fixed. They've rebooted it remotely multiple times. Let's see if they do any kind of prorated credit for the outage.
UPdate: as of 2:50pm CST back up and running. Problem at twckc resolved.
cmb7869 04-10-08, 04:53 PM Hey, thanks for the help. I check my favorites and I have two 648-1 for some reason. I added the one that was not selected in the favorites and it looks like I am fixed.

I have learned that by typing it in it works...but going through the onscreen guide does not work. The spelling guide does work though...it is all too confusing.
mgsports 04-11-08, 06:22 PM You are correct that no cable or satellite systems currently carries KMCI's digital channel. Time Warner has confirmed that they will carry KMCI-DT but not until February 2009. We don't have any info yet from the other providers, but February 2009 is when all broadcast TV turns of Analog signals and goes all Digital. This is most likely when all other providers will carry KMCI also. You can watch our digital channel off air with an antenna at 38-1.
38 The Sports Spot will be in HD on our digital channel when our sister station KSHB begins local newscasts in HD. Currently our engineering staff is still involved in installing and upgrading station equipment to make this possible. There is no set date at this time.

mgsports,
Do you work for KSHB? If so, do you have any projected idea when the news will go live for HD?
mgsports 04-16-08, 09:27 AM EWTN is also being shown on 20-Comcast Information Channel because of the Pope is here.
Yes it has as of yesterday meaning Hallmark Movie Channel.
With 2 more SD channels added what other ones you hope Comcast adds this year?
Why does their Weather Stuff have to be in HD when Weather Plus isn't in HD yet?
Looks like Hallmark Movie Channel (SD) has been added to Comcast at channel 177.
Is TWCKC customer service no longer open 24/7? I tried to call last night and the recording said 8a-10p.
Bradtothebone 04-18-08, 12:27 PM Weird stuff this morning on WDAF-DT. When I first turned on the morning news at about 7:15 (OTA), they were running full-screen in stretch mode, which I've never seen before. After a few minutes of this, the picture and sound went blank, even though the sig strength was 100. I switched over to the E* feed, and they were showing a full yellow screen with sound. I had to leave for work, so don't know how it was resolved. Has anyone heard that they might be doing some testing in preparation for going (local) HD? I kind of doubt it, since their plant is the oldest in town, but who knows?

Obviously, FOX4 is up to something. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but I sure hope they're not going to stretch-o-vision on their local programming.

CosmoNut 04-18-08, 03:37 PM Fox 4 has retooled their lower left corner bug during news broadcasts. It used to have the time and date in the bottom spinning part of the logo. Now they've returned to a constant time and date graphic below the Fox 4 logo (like it was before the new graphics package). I bet the anchors got tired of not being able to immediately say, "It's 7:23 and 46 degrees. You're watching Fox 4 News at 7 a.m."
CosmoNut 04-18-08, 03:42 PM Yes it has as of yesterday.
Wait, are you saying that KSHB's news IS in HD now?
I guess I haven't watched it recently, but I figured I would have heard something more than that.
BTW, Gary Lezak did mention on his weathercast a few days ago that they have new HD weather stuff.

I noticed it a couple of times during the hockey game over the weekend, while watching the HD channel on DISH. I switched over to the OTA ch 41 and didn't see it again. It's possible that it didn't happen again, or it was the DISH feed, don't know.

According to my source, TWC reclaims this channel over the weekends to increase their streaming capacity for HD VOD. They flip it back for the Royals.

That's what happened before the season started. It makes it pretty difficult to setup the DVR to record it if the channel doesn't even appear in the guide. Is it even taking up bandwidth if all that's ever on that channel is a test pattern?
What a bunch of morons. I'm ready to switch to satellite, if only I could find a suitable location to mount the dish...
Also, has anyone with digital phone also lost their caller ID? The last call I show is from 4/18. We've had a number of calls come in and not appear on screen.
bphisig 04-21-08, 10:11 AM I just talked to a CSR at Time Warner and he said the channel will be up when the Royals are playing and being shown in HD, but down when they are not playing in HD. I am not new to the world of HDTV, but the only HDTV I have in my house is a front projector that uses a TWC SA 8300HD for its tuner.
That being said, I am in the market for a new 26” LCD TV for the office. Based on the list above I am assuming that if the new TV has a QAM tuner I will be able to get all the channels listed above by just plugging the cable line into the cable input on the TV? I will not need to pay to rent an additional HD Box from TWC?
I do understand that if I want to get all the HD channels that TWC is offering at my service level I will need to rent an additional box.
Is there another name for a QAM tuner? Is that just a digital tuner or should I be looking for the QAM tuner specifically?
Thank you,
Mike

Most, but not all, TV's that have ATSC tuners these days also have QAM, but not all. You need to look at the specs to make sure. And, yes, you should be able to just plug in the cable and do a channel scan. Good Luck!

bongohawk 04-24-08, 04:39 PM I though maybe they would start it today because I think today marks the start or sweeps. I also had a feeling they had been testing the HD in their control room for awhile now since when you watch them they have the KSHB-DT banners on the side. They could test the full 16x9 on their monitors and then block the side banners from the viewing public. Just a guess on my part though. At least, that would be how I would test it.

I agree with on KSHB's newscast. I see how that other forum always bashed KSHB, but I do like their newscast, and Gary Lezak does seem to know the weather. I used to watch KCTV 5 but a few years ago when they starting trying to be the perv catches and all their "we gotta catch the bad guys" stories, I quickly lost interest. KSHB has some good personalities and show me the news I want to see.

Hey all, I've used this forum as a reference for HD info in both Columbia and KC, and now I need your help if possible.
Just purchased a 32" Toshiba. Bought an outdoor antenna and everything because the indoor wasn't cutting it. We have the outdoor antenna pointed to the south. (we live north of the river, but not that far north)
(this is obviously in Kansas City)
We're only picking up 9-1 and 9-2. Nothing else digitally. Nothing. Everything says low signal strength. We've had it outside on the south deck and now outside on the southwest porch. There are trees in the area, but I don't see why that would be much of an issue. (we're not in the middle of the woods)
Is it me? That is completely possible. All I've done is run the channel program, and it's the only channels that it picks up.
Thanks
