Hey all, I've used this forum as a reference for HD info in both Columbia and KC, and now I need your help if possible.

Just purchased a 32" Toshiba. Bought an outdoor antenna and everything because the indoor wasn't cutting it. We have the outdoor antenna pointed to the south. (we live north of the river, but not that far north)

(this is obviously in Kansas City)

We're only picking up 9-1 and 9-2. Nothing else digitally. Nothing. Everything says low signal strength. We've had it outside on the south deck and now outside on the southwest porch. There are trees in the area, but I don't see why that would be much of an issue. (we're not in the middle of the woods)

Is it me? That is completely possible. All I've done is run the channel program, and it's the only channels that it picks up.

Thanks

Are you sure your Antenna does both UHF and VHF? 9-1 and 9-2 are the only DT channel that does VHF. It sort of sounds like your antenna is only VHF.

Also, could your tv tuner be set to cable instead of OTA. This would allow reception of VHF but not UHF channels.

If it's set to ATSC (and thus getting 9-1 and 9-2), it's not set to "cable," and should see all the ATSC channels.

What does your antenna look like, Bronto? Are you sure that it's a VHF/UHF combo antenna? It's possible that it's too directional, and if you're pointing due south, depending on where you are, that it can't see the proper towers. Try rotating it a little bit east or west and see what happens. You should at least be getting channel 29 (31 digital), 'cause it's on the same tower as 9, assuming your antenna is VHF/UHF.

I got a flyer in the mail today announcing AT&T U-Verse is now available at 135th & Nall Ave. in Leawood. This would include the Weston Point Apartments as well as AMLI at Wynnewood Farms.

I live near 140th and Nall and there is a Ditchwitch in my back yard installing the new AT&T lines. Hopefully this will be the last of the new lines for a while, we had Everest in the backyard last year!

Even with these two, I still have TWC.

I agree with on KSHB's newscast. I see how that other forum always bashed KSHB, but I do like their newscast, and Gary Lezak does seem to know the weather. I used to watch KCTV 5 but a few years ago when they starting trying to be the perv catches and all their "we gotta catch the bad guys" stories, I quickly lost interest. KSHB has some good personalities and show me the news I want to see.

In this morning's (Saturday) KC Star, there was an article about an editor of the NY Times that lives in Maryville that rated the accuracy of the four affiliate weathercasts, as well as the National Weather Service. It looks as though they all do about the same as far as accuracy goes (24-48 hour forecast are OK, long range forecasts are bad). I am also pleased that 41 has gone HD because I believe Lezak (41) as well as Thompson (4) seem to be the most accurate and most knowledgable about the weather (both having meteorological degrees - Thompson also having served as a meteorologist in the Navy), where Busby (9) has over 20 years of experience and has a strong support staff of meteorologists, but Horner (5) is the least experienced and the most panicky of the four whenever severe weather happens. I do know that 41 and 9, because they were the first to go HD, also do not (usually) go from HD to SD whenever severe weather occurs with their graphics.

I live in Blue SPrings and I have a 50" HDTV. I have been using an OTA set of rabbit ears (for two years)to get over the air 4-1, 5-1, 9-1, 9-2, 19-1, 19-2, 19-3, 19-4, 29-1, 38-1, 41-1, 41-2, 50-1, 62-1. I woke up this moring and am only getting 4-1, 5-1, 9-1 and some freaking 16-1 that I have never had before.

It used to take just minimal adjusting to get all the channels before, but now I can't get any of the old ones except the few I mentioned.

The tv is a Samsung. Any ideas?

I have to say that I watched 9 for several days after their conversion to HD and I thought 41 did a much better job on the conversion. There were A LOT of mis-steps and badly stretched video from 9, but I watched 41 at 5pm the first day they broadcast in HD and I didn't notice any problems. I mean, yea, they still have some SD video, but it's mostly video they get from outside sources and obviously there's nothing they can do about that. Overall, I think 41 beat 9 hands down.

Now, if 5 and 4 would stop having to go to SD during severe weather, I'd be set!

I definitely agree. The same went for me. I saw on here that the morning newscast was in HD, so I watched the evening news in HD and was very pleased. I don't really like channel 9, and have always preferred 41, so i'm pretty glad that 41 is in HD now.

Heck, most of the major networks don't even do that. Sometimes during CBS' NFL halftime show they'll show SD highlights of THEIR HD games!

Hi guys,

I just recently moved into the K.C. area, and have been totally confused with the state of things on the local FOX & ABC HD broadcasts.

We have TW Cable, and an 8300HD DVR box. Half of the time, the HD picture on Fox and ABC is unwatchable - nothing but pixelation, tearing, etc. Going straight into the TV's DTV antenna port has the same result. I hooked up a cheap antenna to the TV, and ABC-HD comes in just fine, but the TV keeps losing the signal on Fox every 10 seconds or so.

I've been debating about spending more for a better antenna, but that wouldn't explain why the signal via TW cable isn't any better.

We live near the 69 & 439 intersection. I've tried searching threads for similar problems but haven't seen any recent ones. Can someone tell me what might be going on?

Thank-you!

This question is regarding over the air broadcast signals.

I receive all the digital channels I should be receiving on my portable kitchen ATSC TV, except for 9-1, 9-2, 41-1 and 41-2. They only come in intermittently.

When I first bought the TV (about 2 weeks ago) I could get 41 but not 9. Now I get 9 sometimes, but haven't been able to get 41 in about a week.

I'm using the $9.99 RCA antenna from Best Buy that got good reviews (ANT111). The antenna sits in my south-facing kitchen window.

I live on the Northern edge of KC, at about 108th and Cookingham.

I'm assuming my problems are because I'm on the far edge of the city.

My question is: In February 2009 with the mandatory switch, will the local stations strengthen their signals? This is what I'm hoping.

It's just a kitchen TV (my others are on cable) but annoying nonetheless.

Channel 41 will stay put in the frequency spectrum after the switch. I couldn't tell you if they plan to boost their power or not. All the wiki info says they're at 450kW and I thought UHF broadcasters could go to 1000kW. So I'm not sure there.

An indoor antenna like you have works best if you're in an urban area close to the TV transmit towers. Judging from your location, you probably fit that criteria. I plugged you into http://www.antennaweb.org/ and it shows that your antenna should be pointed slightly west of south. If you bump that antenna from time to time, or move objects in the room near the antenna, or stand near it, you'll get varying results.

Cable and satellite providers compress digital tv signals. It's not going to look quite as good as if you get it over the air. That said, I have Time Warner and haven't had the problems you're describing. If it's a chronic problem, you should get a tech to come check out your equipment.

For your antenna option, go to http://www.antennaweb.org/ and put in your address and see a) what kind of antenna you should be using, and b) where to point it. My guess is that an indoor antenna (which I'm guessing you're using) isn't going to be your best option. I live in the western part of Lenexa, I have an attic mounted antenna and I get great results ... even during bad weather.

What have you been watching with this tearing and pixelation? Is it just certain shows? If you're getting pixelation on static images/video, then you need to contact your local office. I haven't had any problems with TWC local network picture quality in comparison to OTA. It seems that the feed i'm getting over TWC is identical to OTA (with high-motion pixelation and all).

I'm going to hook up at digital converter at my grandparents house between Wellington MO and Lexington MO on May 17.

They have a large antenna in their attic that has been there since the late 1950s or 60s. It always picked up the analog KC & St. Jo 2 channels great with Topeka and Columbia coming and going. Occasionally when I was a kid Springfield, St. Louis, Quincy IL and Kirksville appeared!!!

Anyhow, what should I expect? I'd assume that all of the KC channels have good digital signals. The only one I'm worried about is 38 since it has always been behind the times.

I want this to be easy for them since they're both late 80s in age.

No reason to think it won't work until you try it. I recently hooked one up (the Digital Stream from RatShack) for my 89-year-old mother near Wichita. She was getting horrible reception on one channel (bad multipath), but it comes in perfectly in digital, as well as all the others. She has an attic antenna, also, and the distance is similar. You may have to tweak the antenna direction, but I doubt it. The only one that I might worry about is PBS (19-1,2,3, and 4), as it's pretty low power. If your grandparents aren't behind a hill or something, you should be OK. Good Luck!

Anybody know if/how the KC digital channels come in OTA in Warrensburg? I remember back in college 97-02 that we got Fox 4 very fuzzy and nothing else (we also lived in a low area of the town). On 9/11 our TV footage at home was so barely visible through the static that most of my info of that morning came from NPR.

Lee's Summit probably won't bother, though. I used to work for another city running their PEG channel, and AT&T had a meeting with us to tell us how to get on their system. Although we could get on U-Verse...

- We'd have to supply the streaming server to send the signal out on the dedicated T1 they supply.
- The video quality would only be 320x240 at 1Mbps.
- PEG channels would be relegated to one special section of the service. By doing this, there'd be no opportunity for guide information or even DVR use on the PEG channels.
- We'd be told in what areas of the city they'd be installing service but NOT how many people were actually subscribing to it.

They made it possible to get a PEG channel on U-Verse but highly undesirable to do so.

For all who need to know, if you need an all in one antenna for OTA in KC...definately pick up the antennas direct XG-91. I know it's a UHF only antenna, but this sucker DOES pull in high VHF very well. I just installed mine, and KMBC is coming in nearly perfect off the BACKSIDE of the unit, PERFECT analog signal when pointed toward the transmitter. I live south of Odessa near route 131 on the Lafayette/Johnson county line, and with Chapel Hill ot my west, I don't even have LOS. This is SO much smaller and less conspicuous than a large combo antenna, and I highy reccommend it for use around here. (Use that pre-amp if you are out past 25 miles, though)

You should be able to pick up about a dozen digital channels with your basic package. Some of them don't run HD programming but some do, like ABC/CBS/NBC/Fox/PBS. I am in an apt complex and am picking these channels up with the basic package.

To get more than that, you will have to upgrade to digital cable.

I'm at my parents near Lexington, east of KC. They recently purchased a new SD Tube TV.

Their old antenna has been up there since at least 1994. It had some type of an amplifier that was very rusted. It had since been bypassed. When I tried to run it back through the amp it would rapidly flicker off and on. The 300 ohm cables going from the antenna to the amp were pretty beat up with lots of wire showing. The ends had little wired left and the screws were so rusted there was nothing left to unscrew.

I went out looking for a Channel Master which seems have good reviews online. I couldn't locate one on a Sunday. I found one at RadioShack, the VU-90XR. Hopefully this works out for me tomorrow when I put it up. It doesn't have any of the color codes on the box. Here is what antenna web told me for this location. I'm not worried about the St. Jo channels or the LP Univision.

Is the SA-8300HDC different than the 8300HD? I have the HDC model and my diagnostic screens are 9 pages long, not 20+ pages long.

There are two guides. I forget where the SDV is on the 9 page listing, but it's still in there somewhere.

Welcome to the KC Forum, nroden! Is there a question here somewhere?

Does your parents' new SDTV have an ATSC digital tuner? It probably does if it was manufactured after March '07. If not, you will need a converter box. You may or may not need a preamp on the antenna. You may want to try it with just a new balun (matching transformer) at the antenna, assuming the downlead coax cable is OK. What you have going for you is that the KC stations are all in basically the same direction.

Is anyone else having audio sync issues with the Fox 4 HD feed from DirecTV?

All three of my HR21-700's have been having problems since at least Sunday and it is only occurring on Fox 4. When I watch the channel on the TV's via the OTA antenna, no problems. Only when I watch it off the HD local spot beam from DirecTV.

I've tried rebooting the machines and the many other "helpful" suggestions from DirecTV but the problem persists. So is this just something weird in my household or is it a more area wide issue?

When I try KMBC digital over the air, no picture or sound, not sure what the signal strength is. On TWC Qam-clear, I hear the sound but the picture is blank, same for the weather sub-channel. However, the analog channel via TWC is fine.

Their did National Election Coverage.
The security channel is for apartments, hotels and condos only not for residential places.
So if the bellman calls you to ask if you're expecting so and so you can tune to channel 96 and say either "I don't know the guy" and they are ushered out or "yeah that's him" and the bellman lets him board the elevator to your apartment.

What amazes me is that DISH/DirecTV can spend millions on new satellites and offer somewhere around 100 HD Channels, while TWC locally offers a handfull.

The technology is there, why aren't they using it? Especially whey they can get more money from the HD consumer?

I agree. I see no reason to subscribe to the HD tier yet. I am mostly happy with the clear QAM channels and see no reason to pay for a total of over $20. The only ones Everest carries that I am interested in are Food, HGTV, and NGEO. I just can't justify the cost for those 3.

You don't need to be in diag mode to see the new channels. But to go into diag, hold down the Select button on remote. When a mail flag appears on the box, press the down arrow.

To see the new channels, I just went to the highest channel (Starz HD) and the went up a few more channels. Or you can start at channel 1 and go down. It doesn't show up yet in the guide. BTW, I'm in Westport/Plaza area.

Once they get a few channels going in SDV, they should be able to add as many as they want. Other markets that started SDV have added 50 new HD channels very quickly.

Last night, during Numb3rs, Ch. 5's on-screen weather graphics showed up overlayed on the HD channel without going from 16x9 to 4x3. They still need to update their "what's coming up at 10" banner graphics, though - when these displayed the screen was compressed to 4x3.

LukeSkiewalker

I noticed that Ch 5 was able to do it during Big Bang Theory on Monday. They didn't have the logo up the entire episode but for the first 5 minutes or so they had a weather watch logo up in the upper right hand corner of the screen and it was still in HD. I think it's probably just a matter of time before all the stations will be able to do these and we no longer have to curse the tv because a t-storm warning graphic is interrupting our HD goodness.

I called in today twice on various issues and asked about the 1800 series channels both times. Neither rep had even heard about the channels.

The first rep said that those were new channels that would be added soon and actually grabbed a remote and turned the tv in their call center to the channels. The second rep said the same thing, but then read a memo stating that channels would be moving around later this week and that 3 new HD channels would be added at that time. She specificially mentioned 21 (shopping) moving to 260 - that is now occupied.

From what I understand, SDV is deployed by neighborhood, where SDV 'nodes' serve up to 500 households or something like that - don't recall the details. Anywho, maybe Westport/Plaza where I am is first since it has higher density with hirise housing. I'm in a condo building with 140 units... possibly easier to deploy in these buildings first.

First - you need to remember that "probably" is the correct spelling.

Second - Cox in Omaha has the same type of agreement with WOWT channel 6 in which it simulcasts the news on Cox's channel 1, then rebroadcasts the last newscast until the next live news broadcast. This differs from what KAKE proposes, but does incorporate a sidebar and scroll across the bottom of the screen with updated headlines and weather information.

In the western fringe of LS I also noticed those channels this weekend, just randomly flipping channels. I usually do everything through the guide or change to specific channels. I never use the ch up, ch dn buttons, so it surprised me when I saw them.

On a side note, I have been working on my HTPC over the weekend and added a digital turner card. I was trying to get the available channels over QAM but have been having trouble. Both Dvico supplied software and MediaPortal scan and find channels, but I can't tune with either. Is it possible I am having issues because of these changes they are doing? Do things bode poorly in the future with these changes? Can anyone tell me in english what these SDV changes mean to us?

wtkflhn
06-03-08, 05:09 PM
Can anyone tell me in english what these SDV changes mean to us? (end quote) SDV is Switched Digital Video. What that means, basically, is that SDV chanels have no permanant assigned frequency. The end user (you) will look at his program guide on his cable box and request to see a chanel. The cable box will send a request back to the node or cable head end. The head end tells the cable box to go to a specific chanel to watch this chanel this one time. When you switch to another chanel, the other program is droped. And that chanel is then clear for the next user. This is the same thing they do with "On Demand" chanels. This SDV service requires 2 way communication between the cable box and the cable heade end. Therefore, it doesn't work with most cable cards in the field,at preasent.

Possibly, but I experience this with all of my OTA DTV signals. Granted my antenna is an indoor antenna, and I do have negative variables against me inlcuding walls and trees, but like I said - analog signals come in great with my antenna on my TV. Digital signals always cut out and are super sensitive to any possible interference. Why?

I know this might be a little off topic but I know there are a lot of people in here who have one, my question is how do you download from the DVR? I figured out how to upload pictures but can I download recorded shows to USB?

Hope this helps. :)

Digital signals always cut out and are super sensitive to any possible interference. Why?

I've personally never seen an indoor antenna installation work "reliably" for any period of time at distances much further than 10 miles. At 14 miles, you're probably on the fringe of what I'd suggest is a usable range for using an indoor antenna, anyway. Especially if you have a lot of trees or tall buildings around you ... if you're antenna and TV are on the first floor ... if you're in a low lying area ... if your tuner/TV is an older one that does not deal with multipath issues as well as the newer ones. Lots of variables.

My personal suggestions - Make sure you're using good cable (RG6) that isn't frayed and take out any splitters or other hardware you may have between the cable and your antenna. If you're using a preamp, make sure it's a good one (I've used cruddy ones in the past that have actually made my signal quality worse). Even then, multipath issues sometimes cannot be overcome with an indoor antenna installation and you might need, at a minimum, a modest antenna in the attic.

TWC added another ghost channel today..
SDB-MHD

What is it? Still none active yet.

This morning, TWC removed all of the 'ghost' HD channels except for the SDB-PPV HD channel. Looks like they're pretty busy prepping something to happen very soon as I've seen changes each day 4 days in a row. But no new active channels just yet.

It took me about 4 tries to be able to tune in to an SDV channel. The first 3 times, it said the channel wasn't available. I'm concerned that any recordings for SDV channels may not work. Does anyone have any idea if the DVR will keep attempting to tune in an SDV channel when trying to record it?

Same here in Lee's Summit. I cant scroll through the channels and find them, but I can type them in. It is interested that is shows what program is supposed to be on, but eventually the screen pops up saying the channel is unavailable.

SDV is good news unless you are using Cable Cards, like in my Tivo-HD. Still waiting on Tivo to release a fix/adapter to address this. Luckily Everest (Now SureWest) is not using SDV yet.

My DVR uses a CableCard and SDV works, but yeah, 3rd party CC boxes won't have SDV for a while. While Tivo blows away TWC's DVR, I'll take 50+ HD channels and a subpar DVR over Tivo with fewer HD channels.

In local news....
Time Warner contacted me so I could let everybody know that their Navigator boxes will be running without any problems by the end of the month. Kidding! But it's time to free up some new digital space, and I think I've explained a few times, one analog channel can hold a bunch of digital channels — or at least, more than one.

So Time Warner will be moving Jewelry Television (yeah, me neither) and Style in order to free up one more analog channel and use the extra bandwidth for digital stuff. Such as HD. But first, Time Warner has to move all of the existing HDs around to make room for the potentially new HDs it will be adding, fingers crossed, any year now.

Comcast also announced changes to its Missouri and Kansas lineups: Metro Sports is moving from channel 44/MO and 68/KS to channel 258 everywhere so maybe TWCKC will do it to but it's a local channel so it should stay on Analog. CMT is moving from channel 56 to channel 146. Those new assignments are on the Digital Starter tier, where you can expect more analog channels to move for reasons I just explained. Again. A Comcast rep that I dialed at random said: "We are offering a free upgrade from Analog to Digital Starter for 12 months, plus 2 free additional digital converters for 12 months." After that, you'll just be watching TV on your computer screen anyway ...

Well, HGTV and FoodHD are just stretched or widescreen 480i, so i just notice the bad picture quality from that.

On MHD I have been looking for pixelation but haven't really noticed any. Frankly, i think it's one of the better HD quality stations we have now, up there with UniversalHD and HDNet. It's certainly not exhibiting the horrible pixelation from Comcast-like bitstarved feeds.

The pixelation I'm getting isn't what you see from a bitstarved feed. It's noise/errors on the cable line. My error rate when I look at the diagnostic screen for the bad channels is some crazy exponential number. I don't understand why it's only on certain channels and everything else comes through crystal clear though. And neither does TWC...

Yesterday, I emailed Everest customer service as to when we might be seeing new HD channels in the 1080p,16x9 format. I also told them if network bandwidth was an issue, there were many, many channels on their network which are useless and could be dropped, freeing up bandwidth, in favor of new HD channels.

Of course, I could be made available to make those decisions for them. :)

Wish we could pick ala carte what channels we want feed to our homes.

http://www.brucespringsteen.net/songs/57Channels.html

Here is Everest's response to my email request...

"We will be adding approximately 20 new HD channels, hopefully in Mid-July. At this time there are no television or cable stations that actually broadcast in 1080p, they are either 1080i or 720p. The only programming available in 1080p are Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs. Thank you for choosing Everest Connections and have a great weekend."

As a note, I am a happy camper with Everest. For years I was a Time Warner customer (before I had HD) and was glad when Everest service came to my neighborhood. Had many issues with Time Warner, the main one was the "pixelization"/slo-mo/stop action" I would get on their premium channels, HBO, etc.

The issue I have with Everest, they are no longer locally owned and have become an appendage of Surewest in Sacremento, Colli4nia. I wonder how responsive they will be to us, "out here on the perimeter".

Also new to the HD lineup is MHD (channel 1024) which features concert series, events and original productions from MTV, VH1 and CMT. Time Warner Cable anticipates adding more new HD channels by the end of the month.

“As the home of free HD, we are pleased to add more exciting HD programs to the roster of High Definition programs our customers receive at no additional cost,” says Damon Porter, Time Warner Cable Director of Public Affairs. “Time Warner Cable’s HD delivers programming in a widescreen format with a crystal clear picture that’s up to five times the resolution of Standard Definition TV. In addition, HD programming’s Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound creates a rich theater-quality experience right in our customers’ homes.”

“As the HD leaders, we’re not only adding more HD content to enhance our customers viewing experience. We’re also making it quicker and easier for them to locate the HD versions of their favorite shows,” Porter says.

Beginning July 3, Time Warner Cable will reorganize its channels to make it simple to find the HD versions of programs. Viewers will be able to locate the HD version of their favorite channels by adding either 10, 12 or 13 in front of the Standard Definition channel number. For instance, TNT currently is found on channel 32. Its HD counterpart will move from channel 1460 to 1032 to make it easier to find.

The HD versions of channels included in the Basic/CPST Tier will be found in the 1000’s. Channels from the Digital Tier that are broadcast in HD will be located in the 1200’s while channels from the Premium Tier will be found in the 1300’s. Broadcast channels delivered in HD will remain in the 1400’s. Video On Demand (VOD) in HD will be located in the 1500’s.

Customers will be able to access all HD versions of the networks included in their current programming tier.

Some viewer favorites and their new channel numbers – beginning July 3 -- include HD Theater channel 1000, National Geographic HD channel 1056, History HD channel
1069, FSN Midwest HD 1059, ESPN HD 1033, ESPN 2 HD 1034, A&E HD 1035, HBO HD 1300, Cinemax HD 1320, Showtime HD 1340, and Starz HD 1360.

“We are dedicated to bringing Time Warner Cable customers a broad selection of HD programming delivered in a customer friendly easy-to-use format. The addition of these HD channels and the reorganization of our channel lineup will make it even easier to enjoy the vivid ‘you are there’ HD experience,” Porter says.

Time Warner has moved around many of the QAM-Clear channels. My TV is picking up several digital channels when doing a scan but when I try to watch them, it just says "no signal". Looks like Fox is one of those "no signal" channels.

There is one new channel that is in Spanish I believe, and HGTV and FOOD are still available but have odd channel numbers, 110-5445 and 109-5444.

Has anyone noticed a deterioration in the TWC HD channels within the last week? On most HD channels, esp. ABC, ESPN and FSMW the screen keeps pausing for a split second, this never happened before and has been pretty constant for the last week or so. It just freezes very slightly and then returns to normal, it's quite annoying when watching well, anything.

I imagine it will take through the end of they year for them to get SDV properly tuned. They apparently have to manage SDV by neighborhood. I'd rather they release this not completely tuned than to not have the channels at all.

MoJo on the standard broadcast HD section was shutoff yesterday in my area. Might be in preparation for more SDV channels. I did see MoJo appear in the SDV section for a couple days then it disappeared. Now that they shutoff the broadcast channel....

Has anyone noticed better reception of late on 41.1? It seems like for the first time I get consistent reception from them (from 60 miles away), but it could be the warmer weather (better tropo ducting). When Fox 4.1 upped their power, 41.1 became the hardest signal for my D* HR20 to pull in, but perhaps KSHB upped their power when they went to the HD newscast?

I am ready for July 3rd to get here! Hopefully a variety of new HD channels will be added on that date, when TWC moves around various other channels.

This will be a good thing for TWC. The competition (at least DISH/DirecTV) have far better choices in HD than TWC.

Now that TWC has SDV going, they technically should be able to offer more channels than satellite. DirecTV is already dumping some low watched HD channels to make room for new ones coming, so it appears they already have capacity issues. TWC should be able to have 500+ HD channels, but they can only put less watched channels on SDV (up to 500 simultaneous viewers per neighborhood if I understand right).

If he is, he is wrong. The Voom Channels were taken down because Rainbow didn't keep their end of the contract by updating the Voom channels with new content. Dish decided to pull down the channels as breach of contract. They're not having capacity problems, in fact, according to several threats on DBSTalk E* has plenty of capacity and is even launching a new satellite in July.

Does anybody know how long it takes for Time Warner to get a neighborhood system up and running after they bury the cable?

I just moved into a new subdivision in Gardner and TW buried cable to my house several days ago. I called them and asked when I could have TV and internet service. My address was not in their system yet so they sent out a work order or something. Apparently the representatives were told by whoever processed the work order that it would be ready by the end of the year.

WTF? They can only give me a 6 month time frame? They've already lost the business of the other homes in the neighborhood, I would think they could be a little faster than that if they want to keep people from going to satellite. I only want to go with TW for the faster internet service than DSL.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out what I'm going to do for internet service. My fiance is taking some online classes so it's pretty important to get it ASAP. I'm not very excited to sign up for DSL from Embarq...

Long time reader first time poster here. I live in south overland park (159th and metcalf area) and I'm now receiving all of the new HD channels as well.

The main problem i'm having now is the speed of the guide with the new software push that went through the other night. My guide is so unresponsive now. Also when i push channel up or channel down on my remote it takes like 6 seconds for the channel to actually change. Don't get me wrong I love having all the extra HD channels due to SDV but the time it takes to do simple functions such as changing channels is ridiculous.

Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

I had my LCD TV at work today hooked up with an antenna and on 41.1 and 38.1 it only said "DTV Program" and not the program that was airing. All the other locals had program data. 41.2 had "Weather Plus" or "Local Weather" or something for the program title.

I have noticed hit and miss guide info in general, particularly lacking on weekends. KSHB announced last night that they are now constucting a new HD studio, which might be why they are not keeping it up lately. Interestingly, according to engineering trades, the FCC recently reworded the program guide guidelines, making it clear this is a requirement and not a suggestion.

For me, the roller coaster ride of audio levels on 41's digital channel during some newscasts has chased me away many times. February, '09 can't come soon enough for me. Then broadcasters can finish tweaking and devote all their time to the digital signal.

they rarely cut prices all on their own. However, if you call in and say that you're going to Everest, you should expect that they'll at *least* match prices, and if you can point out Comcast's inferior services vs Everest, you should expect (and demand) sharper discounts.

Was curious if anyone has figured out yet how to set up WDAF in Vista Media Center.

Adding it in manually using the Media Center interface, you will need to enter the physical frequency the channel is being broadcast on. WDAF-DT is currently being broadcast on physical channel 34.

If using the Media Center interface doesn't work, you can add it by hand into the atscprefs.xml file in your settings folders. I've done this several times in more than one broadcast market and it works if you know what you're doing. This thread on another website will give you good information on how to do that -

I have a very short cable run from the AT&T box to my house, so the connection is flawless. Only one of my co-workers had trouble getting AT&T because he was at the extreme maximum distance from the AT&T box.

So any of you in Olathe that have been wanting to jump ship, but did not because AT&T did not have Sci-fi, now is the time.....

The last season of Battlestar Gallactica in HD, sweet......

Hopefully you also have CNBC HD, according to this article that AT&T Uverse added USA HD, Bravo HD, SciFI HD and CNBC HD.

Might report at the UverseUsers.com-Kansas about the new HD Channels.

Anyone notice that TWC keeps changing the date for the channel realignment? The web site now lists July 24 as the date that things will move around.

First it was July 3, 2008. Then it was July 9th and then July 15th. Now, its the 24th. I wonder what the holdup is? Possibly adding more HD?

I've noticed too. Yesterday it was still saying the 15th. I'm willing to wait if there's more HD coming.

Possibly adding more HD? (sigh) Call me skeptical ... but I'd have an easier time believing that the suits are trying to shove this down to the customer before engineering has all the bugs worked out.

My guess ... technical issues. That I'd believe.

I think the stations engineers read this site more than we think. It looks like KSHB fixed the audio issues during their news. With Fox 4 now officially sold (as of yesterday) hopefully they will migrate to HD newscasts shortly. I just wonder who will be next, WDAF or KCTV?

Any station engineers out there have any additional input?

Time Warner has some 1800 series channels again...

1810 SDB-C Span 2
1811 SDB-HDL News FC
1813 SDB-HGTV FC
1814 SDB-WeathCh FC
1815 SDB-FOOD TV FC
1816 SDB-FIRE CH FC
1817 SDB-NHL/MLB 1
1818 SDB-Disney FC
1837 PPV HD

Like before when the first set of 1800's channels were added, nothing works and the blue "channel not available" screen comes up. They are not in the guide and you can only get there by adding it to your favorites or manually typing in the channel number.

Not sure what the "FC" means in the descriptions.

They all seem to be repeats of other channels, except maybe the Fire Ch station. I wonder what the "FC" stands for? All have program data and none appear to be HD.

At least TWC is doing something, I agree. DISH and DirecTV are adding HD left and right. TWC has to do something to keep up. Hopefully in August, when a lot of the lessor known channels move to SDB/SDV, they will add even more HD.

Family & Children Package maybe? I always wondered about those when I had TWC.

I believe the last I heard was the .2 Network would be on KSMO-DT and most likely in HD since My Network TV doesn't produce anything in HD. the .2 Network would probably get higher ratings than MNTV and I wonder if they would put it on 62.1 instead of 62.2?

Whenever they're ready to get it going, my TiVo is ready to start recording more stuff.

I would think that the dot2 network would be on 62.2, not 62.1, since it is after the ".2" Network :-)

I have two HDTV's in my house hooked up to OTA - one only OTA and the other cable and OTA. I look forward to RTN and dot2 coming to KC, soon.

I live in Olathe and have not been able to pick up ABC (9.1). I'm using a Phillips MANT310, I tried the Radio Shack 15-2186 indoor/outdoor antenna and was not able to pick it up either. We live around Blackbob and 119th street. I get all the other local stations perfectly fine other than PBS. Is this normal for the area unless I upgrade to an outdoor antenna? Thanks in advance.

I am at 143rd and Pflumm and 9.1 and 19.1 can sometime be a challenge to get. Especially 9.1 (KMBC-DT) because it is the only VHF DT channel. I also have an OTA upstairs, and get 9.1 much better than downstairs. I hope this helps. Oh, and all of my antenna's are indoor.

I have the same problem just that i'm in South KC (64138). What I do know is that KMBC-DT broadcasts on channel 7 which is VHF and for some reason makes it harder or near impossible for rabbit ears and pretty much any indoor antenna to pick it up. Even my outdoor VHF/UHF ariel pointed towards the transmitter has a hard time picking up a consistent signal in which it usually wavers from 10% to 40%. Any advise guys?

Thanks guys. That explains why i'm having so much trouble picking it up. D* is installing HD this weekend so I should be fine other than when storms blow through. Is it just me or does KSHD 41.1 have the best OTA picture?

I live in the same area you do and also can't pick up KMBC-DT on an indoor antenna. I also have an outdoor antenna connected to a D* dish mounted on my roof that picks up all of the local DT channels, including KMBC, without any problems.
