View Full Version : Kansas City, MO - HDTV
jeffdbs 09-10-03, 10:24 PM Well it's time to call KSMO DT-47 (WB-62). http://www.mediaweek.com/mediaweek/headlines/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1968571 I just want to hold up a sign in front of these non-HDTV stations that reads "Go HDTV or watch your viewer numbers and advertisers revenue numbers go bye-bye" Sometimes I wonder if these people who run these stations that will not support HDTV are the same people who still feel DVD's players will never replace the VCR players.:(
hdtimmy 09-10-03, 11:16 PM I emailed 62 at programming@wb62.com and I sent a message to Aaron Barnhart at http://www.tvbarn.com/feedback.html. I will post the results here.
Everyone else that is interested in WB HD programming should do the same.
hdtimmy 09-10-03, 11:19 PM Hey, should we contact the FOX4 "problem solvers" about their 1kw signal? :D
I hope the "PROBLEM SOLVERS" at FOX4 can solve the problem of the deluge of flaming hate mail they are receiving regarding their Fisher Price "Baby's First TV Antenna" and pisspoor signal.
I wrote Aaron Barnhart (TV Barn) the following email ...
I am very irritated with stations like KSMO WB-62 which give nothing but excuses on why they are not passing HD yet. Then you have stations like WDAF FOX-4 that broadcast a light-bulb's worth of signal to the people at the base of the tower that can actually receive it. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. They can watch their viewers and advertising revenue dwindle away to nothing as far as I am concerned.
Here is the response I received the next day ...
You're the first person to bring up KSMO. Another letter writer this morning is the first to bring up KMCI. Obviously more people are getting HD and it's time the stations got on board.
That said, here is what I can tell you: KSMO has ordered hi-def pass-thru equipment in response to the WB network's announcement this spring that it will be increasingly dramatically its number of HD shows.
KMCI has ordered several movies in hi-def, but since it is an independent station it is reliant on the supply chain — and right now there just aren't that many syndicators willing to do their game shows and trashy celebrity shows in HD. But eventually they will!
Watch my column as I will get an update on those stations in print soon. And thanks for writing. Could you give me your real name and the town you live in, please, in case I print your letter?
jeffdbs 09-11-03, 09:19 PM Looks like we will have new HDTV 1080i programming available here in the Kansas City area. The new STB's will have Over the Air HDTV inputs for our local Kansas City digital channels. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=300651:)
What's up with NBC? I'm a comcrap subscriber and we just got NBC added to our channel lineup the other day. At first I was excited to see something new in HD, but I've yet to see anything in true HD? Everything is letterboxed and pillarboxed? WTF is up with that? Hell I can watch Drew Carey on ABC in all it's 16:9 "true" HD glory, yet NBC can't even put out Leno in "true" HD. Weak... I didn't watch ER so I can't speak to that, but seeing as how the analog feed is in 16:9 I'm sure it is on the digital as well, but that's one lousy show. Literally... I don't know why more broadcasters aren't looking to ABC to see how to please their customers? So I can watch ESPN doing "the stretch" on SD content. People with burn-in paranoia have somehow convinced ESPN to make Stewart Scott look like he ate a heard of cattle!?! Nice! Or I can watch NBC on a 26 inch screen when I bought a 36? Not to mention the local CBS and FOX stations and their screw you approach to us, the viewer. I mean really, 38 The Spot has a bigger signal than FOX, are you kidding... And last time I checked football does make the world go round, and we can't even scope the Chiefs in HD? Yet the rest of the civilized world can? Well, provided Merideath isn't involved. Oh sweet irony! MNF, Sunday night baseball/football, the NBA finals, the NHL finals, and most all of ABC's primetime programming are awesome! Not that it matters, after all I'd watch Eskimos slaughter baby seals if it was in true HD, but you get my point... I know these things take time but Jesus get with it already... I suppose I'd be less pissed if I had a widescreen (maybe not) but these formatting issues are a pain in the ass for everyone and should have been thought out a little better... It either needs to be 4:3 or 16:9 none of this wishy washy in between crap. 4:3 has had it's time in the sun it's time to evolve... Long rants suck, I know, I'm sorry...
peter gower 09-12-03, 02:25 PM I've sent email to Everest about HD. Here's what I got:
Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 18:15:23 -0500
From: "EV_Everest Customer Service" <CustomerService@Everestgt.com>
We will be adding HDTV in the next 30 days.
- Could you give me a link where I can read about
details, i.e. what kind channels, etc.?
From: "EV_Everest Customer Service" <CustomerService@Everestgt.com>
Not sure that we have information posted yet, but if you check
www.everestkc.net & www.everestkc.com there will be something posted soon.

Don't get too excited, I found nothing on their web sites so far.
peter gower 09-12-03, 02:31 PM What's up with DVI?
I tried it and it didn't work. There was a post that DVI out was disabled and at the same time someone said it was working for him.
Any updates?
peter--what STB do you have and what cable co? what ouput device (TV) are you using?
kcjefff 09-12-03, 04:12 PM If you are referring to the DVI on the new TWC Pioneer boxes, I can tell you it does work. If your's doesn't, I would suggest checking cables and not least of all, try getting a new one. I am using a DVI-D single link cable and mine works perfectly.
gbledsoe 09-12-03, 05:48 PM I know these things take time but Jesus get with it already
I doubt Jesus really cares enough to do anything about it. BUT, there are enough here (and there are more everyday) that do! Between the emails, phone calls, Aaron Barnharts articles, and Chiefs fans, we are being heard.

Peter--regarding your comments about Everest HD: this is the response I got today---
==========================
At this time we do not know when HDTV will be available. We are testing HDTV equipemtn right now so hopefully in 2004 we will be able to provide HDTV.

jeffdbs 09-13-03, 12:32 AM Did you notice Brandsmart ad in the paper today showing HDTV's along with pointing out that KMBC-DT broadcast an HDTV signal. http://www.brandsmartkc.com/s/ad.cfm
peter gower 09-13-03, 01:12 AM If you are referring to the DVI on the new TWC Pioneer boxes, I can tell you it does work. If your's doesn't, I would suggest checking cables and not least of all, try getting a new one. I am using a DVI-D single link cable and mine works perfectly.
I've got Samsung and Pioneer cable box. I used DVI-D double link cable (Belkin) from Best Buy. It didn't work. I checked the connection, not much really to check, just DVI cable.
Anyhow I just wanted to know if it is true that DVI output is disabled like someone from OH pointed out or not. If not, I might get the single link DVI-D cable from Microcenter and try again.
Is there anybody with Sammy and new Pioneer box that has DVI connection working?
TIA
rboster 09-13-03, 10:19 AM Peter:
Since my FP does not have a DVI, I've not done any reseach on the use. I did read a recent review of a projector in Sterophile guide to HT and I thinkt hey were commenting that some DVI source components may not be compartible with some projectors. They used the Bravo dvd player as an example. I can't imagine this may be the case in your situtation-but Iguess one never knows. I was surprised when I read this-didn't make sense.
Peter, regarding Everest and HD, it sounds like the same runaround I got last winter/spring. I think Everest dropped the ball on this one and my estimation is they don't have any solid plans for HD in the near future. The 30 day response is the same line they've been giving for 6 months now. I'm hopeful they are testing HD equipment like kchdtv's reply said but I'm also skeptical of that.
The gal I talked to last spring was higher up in the marketing branches at Everest and gave a vague date of 2004 for HDTV. I'll try and find her number and give her a call for an update.
FrugalRacer 09-15-03, 11:30 AM CBS has announced they will carry an SEC game of the week in HD: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=301260
drew138 09-15-03, 12:22 PM Anyone in KC getting the INHD channels on TWC? Nothing in NYC.
Drew
kcroyaljosh 09-15-03, 12:35 PM no my inhd channels are not working properly either.
kcjefff 09-15-03, 05:13 PM I have read several forum posts stating that people are having problems with Sammys and the TWC box's DVI output. That may be your issue. I have a Sony and no problems here.
I also heard that Mitsubishi's 2004 line of products, which all have DVI, are having problems with DVI and their displays too. Apparently, the picture is displaced/shifted-over several inches off center compared to the component/S-video/composite inputs. Ah, the growing pains of new technology.
Heads up everyone.
INHD & INHD2 are now available on Comcast in KC
I'm getting it in Greenwood. Channels 174 and 175.
I'm glad I forgot today was the 15th so I wasn't antsy all day.
I got home and was flipping it onto MNF, and stumbled into it!!!
Wooo! Hooo!!!
There is almost too much programming on tonight. My wife wants to watch Full Metal Jacket, there is MNF, and PBS has an HD program on at 9:30 about Alaska.
ok, there's never too much.
jeffdbs 09-15-03, 09:46 PM Wonderful news! The HDTV train is picking up steam in Kansas City. Hopefully all the non-HDTV broadcast stations will feel the rumble of the television viewers jumping on-board to enjoy the wonderful new HDTV pictures and sounds. Spread the good news.
CANNON-FODDER 09-15-03, 09:47 PM Drew, I am getting one of the INHD channels, 1501 or something on TWC-Leavenworth (off KC feed I think).
I have only seen content intermittently though. There were two tennis tournaments (or one split into days maybe?), and several older movies that I did not recognize. For a while, it was saying free preview between 1900-????, I actually thought it was another subscription channel (is it?). Otherwise it simply shows a repeating teaser-trailer kind of thing.
As far as set up, I have the Panasonic box (not using DVI - TXM3297HF) and I don't subscribe to the digital channels, nor the movie channels. So I see one TWC loop, two or three PBS feeds, FOX, ABC, Discovery HD, and INHD (#1 I guess). Showtime and HBO were there the first day, but I didn't want to pay so I told them to turn them off (they forgot).

bocktar 09-15-03, 11:40 PM Sweet!!
I was watching Leno on 41.1 tonight and it started out in HD! At least...for a minute...but it had no audio. This means they have the equipment and they're testing it though!!
They switched it back to the SD upconvert a few minutes later, I would assume to restore the audio.
olathebob 09-16-03, 09:38 AM I have Comcast in Olathe, and last Thursday, I began receiving KSHB-DT on channel 183. It was great watching ER in HD! It was there all weekend (even though NBC had no HD programs.) Then last night, while watching the two new INHD channels, I went to check out 183...and it was gone. What's up with that? Anyone else have that happen? CSR was of no help...didn't have an answer..."will have to check with a supervisor." Kind of frustrating to get a taste of NBC in HD and have it go away.
Hey Olathebob, I noticed the same thing. Channel 183 is now gone!!!
Hopefully it is only temporary.
Bradtothebone 09-16-03, 09:48 AM During MNF last night, I switched over to 41-1 for a minute and "First Watch" was on, but definitely in SD. Bocktar, you must be right, they're just testing for now. But progress, nevertheless!
Brad
I've got comcast and NBC as of yesterday is gone, but now I'm getting INHD1 and 2! There was a show on INHD2 about Hawaii and holy crap that was probably the best looking picture I've ever seen! I'm guessing NBC is resolving some issues and should be back on soon. Once they get back on that puts us at eight channels with HD content, provided you have SHOHD and HBO.. With CBS, FOX, DiscoveryHD, and CinemaxHD coming soon I don't think I'll ever leave the house... BTW INHD has college football every Sat. Sweet................
olathebob 09-16-03, 10:41 AM Wonder of wonders...Comcast called me back a while ago regarding the channel 183 issue. They were "just testing" the channel to make sure everything was working properly. They are due to bring it back on line for good sometime next week..no exact date known. The rep also says they've been told by KCTV that their HD signal will be operational in the next two weeks. Just thought you'd all like to know.

   KCTV-HD in two weeks or less?????? I MUST be dreaming! Did I hear you right, olathebob?

gbledsoe 09-16-03, 02:33 PM There's an article in todays edition of The Examiner about Comcast and HTDV.
gbledsoe 09-16-03, 02:34 PM The Examiner serves Independence and Blue Springs, Missouri.
Here's the link to the article: Comcast/HDTV Article (http://www.examiner.net/stories/091603/bus_091603001.shtml)

Inositle 09-16-03, 04:20 PM I live in Lee's Summit, and I was just wondering if anyone knows how much it will cost for just basic cable plus the local HDTV channels from comcast.
Also, how much more is it for the INHD channels?
Thanks alot ~
gbledsoe 09-16-03, 05:02 PM You'd have to call Comcast (816-795-1100), but from what I understand in order to get the HD channels you must signup for Basic Cable plus Digital Cable.
--GBledsoe
olathebob 09-16-03, 05:36 PM Brad, you heard right about what Comcast told me that they heard from KCTV. Of course, there's no specific date, just a vague "in about two weeks." I'd love to see what sort of answer they give Aaron Barnhart. But it sounds like at least they're close.
Bob
All the HD channels are included on Comcast's Digital tier. In order to get the HD signal to your TV, you'll need to get the HD box which is 5.00 extra a month.
If you have Digital Cable already, then all you'll need to do is eather add the HD box to what you have now, or swap out your current digital box with the HD box.
ksmith4 09-16-03, 08:01 PM oooohhh, i've got goose bumps all over.... (ok, that was TMI)...
But geez, KSHB and maybe even KCTV - BOTH BEFORE the fall season, oh man, I never thought I'd see the day....
Can't wait -
Kendal
Don't forget that WB-62 has officially ordered their HD passthru equipment also. They are planning on broadcasting HD within 30-60 days.
I can't wait to see Smallville in HD!!!

Sorry, it's actually a Pioneer "Voyager HD" box from TWC.
I also checked and while there is now program information on the INHD channel (1501), the picture and audio do not come through. The INHD2 channel (1502) shows "No Data" in the program guide, but does show the same sort of teaser-trailer content (including the one on Hawaii and some Space Shuttle shots).

kcroyaljosh 09-17-03, 03:41 AM I'm not getting inhd1 but i'm getting inhd2. Can anyone tell me if they are having the same problem too. Thanks Josh
hdtimmy 09-17-03, 11:48 AM From Bob Schneider, Chief Engineer at KSMO:
Blessings Tim,
We will not be able to broadcast HD of WB this fall, but hopefully will
be able to broadcast HD sometime in 2004.
The logistics of getting an HD signal from our studios to our
transmitter is quite time consuming and very expensive.
Thank you for your viewership. I will try to keep everyone informed by
postings on the AVS Forum, as we get a clearer timetable for the launch.
Peace,
Bob Schneider CE

shawn67 09-17-03, 12:48 PM Same problem here.... no 1501 but there is 1502. Is there a number at TWC that you can use to speak to someone COMPETENT????? And that understands this problem???
Shawn
jeffdbs 09-17-03, 07:58 PM Well, I for one have great faith in chief engineers to solve technical problems. Hopefully KSMO will overcome and transmit WB HDTV alot sooner than next year fall season. Please let us know if you need any help pulling cable.;)
I have the same problem with INHD and TWC. I have called the last 2 nights, and the CSR had no idea. In fact in took convincing that they are channels they carry. Tonight I waited on hold various times for her to talk with techs, supervisors etc... and she finally came back and told me they were turned on Monday, that they are working correctly on their box, and that I would have to have a service call to find the problem.
I tried and tried to explain that others were having the same problem (can anyone in KC see INHD?). Keep calling, let them know it doesn't work.
CANNON-FODDER 09-17-03, 09:57 PM Question: Are these channels not subscription services?
I thought that in the Austin thread, TWC was charging $5.95 for both channels down there.
I dimly recall there was a reference to the INHD/INHD2 subscription service in some article in the newspaper back in July (I forget the exact info)?
I was confused when I then looked at the TWC HD page and saw it say they are not pay-per-view; I guess I jumped to the conclusion that this statement meant that they were not also subscription.
-CF
I believe that they are included as part of the digital tier. The CSR said that I should be getting both channels, 1502 does come in.
jeffdbs 09-17-03, 11:42 PM KSHB-DT (41-01) "The Tonight Show" is in 1080i 16X9 HDTV. Yes!
For you Everest customers, here is another reply I got from Everest custome support on my inquiry into when/if HDTV
===
Thanks for your inquiry. We are planning to launch HDTV in late November/early December.
Cheers!

I don't understand. If WB-62 was broadcasting HD last year before they gave their equipment away to the ST LOUIS affiliate, why is it so hard to add it back in?? They have ordered their equipment, so just install it!
hdtimmy 09-18-03, 02:10 AM From what I understand, WB62 only had the HD equipment in their possession. Right before they were going to install it, Sinclair decided to ship it to St. Louis.
So far, they have always broadcasted the SD signal that you see today.
ksmith4 09-18-03, 10:19 AM Leno sure was glorious last night on KSHB !!! I love my HDTV...
Kendal
Bradtothebone 09-18-03, 11:46 AM I also saw Leno in HD last night - looked great! Thanks, KSHB.
Was that the only show in HD last night? I know "West Wing" was not, and I only saw a few seconds of "Law & Order's" intro, as I was swithching over to "Street Time" on Showtime. L&O's first few seconds were definitely SD. Anyone see the whole show of L&O? Did they eventually switch over?
Brad
ksmith4 09-18-03, 06:29 PM I checked too, maybe 15 minutes in, just SD at that point as well. I was shocked (pleased yes) to see Leno in HD, wide screen, no cropping, etc. You betcha I'm checking/watching again tonight!!
NBC HD baby!
Kendal
Got home tonight and INHD & INHD2 are working!
Channel 183 (KSHB) is now showing up again on Comcast.
Hopefully Leno comes through in HD tonight!!
laser1972 09-18-03, 10:32 PM I still to this damn day cannot get KSHB or channel 38 ... I have the Samsung T-150 HDTV tuner, but nothing, still... I emailed the engineer at KSHB, but no replies...
What can i do...???.. I know there are other people out there like me with these problems... I get everything else..... KCTV,KMBC,KCPT,etc...
TheHypnoToad 09-18-03, 11:18 PM Laser1972 -
I'm in the same boat as you with KSHB-DT & KMCI-DT on my RCA DTC-100. I've e-mailed the station and gotten no response what so-ever. I'm glad that other folks are able to receive these stations but it would appear that the transmitter is having a PSIP problem and the station engineers are turning a deaf ear to anyone who is trying to point it out to them. As much as they seem to feel that KSHB-DT is broadcasting on 42-1, my STB shows 42-3 and a very weak signal of 30-35 given my distance from their new transmitter and the power that they are broadcasting at. Even KSHB 41 analog signal is weak here just south of Liberty. I guess that I'll continue to e-mail the station and just watch KMBC-DT, the occasional HD programming on KCPT-DT and the HD stuff on D* until they listen and then figure out what is wrong.
Later,
Kurt
jeffdbs 09-18-03, 11:30 PM On the Samsung and RCA receivers have you remove all digital OTA channels, power down(unplug AC), let unit cool down overnight, power up and then rescan the airwaves?
ksmith4 09-19-03, 12:01 AM ER - HD !!! Leno - HD !!!
KSHBDT - 41.1 - PSIP still not working on my HD5 (just says Regular Programming), but it up and working....now, hello KCTV?!?!!!! CSI baby !!, we need it!
Interestingly enough, the PSIP on KCTVDT showed up all fixed and displaying correctly last night - now I see the program listings as I should, whatever they did, it worked. Sounds like the engineers need to talk to each other and fix everyone else in KC.
Kendal
hdtimmy 09-19-03, 12:46 AM I also still cannot get KMCI and KSHB. I am not getting any more e-mail responses. I am going to try snail mail, to their Chief Engineer and their General Manager. I work two blocks away from their studios on Oak Street in KC,MO. If this ignoring of their viewers continues, I will be going down there. Don't know how far I will get, but I am sure gunna try!!
I have rebooted my box, rescanned, troubleshooted, etc. A friends Toshiba DST-3000 works perfectly using the exact same antenna connection. 100% signal strength, no breakups. It has to be something at the stations.
fcsmith 09-19-03, 10:22 AM So now that KSHB-DT is passing on the HD feed from NBC, I wonder when TWC will bring it online. It's been listed as "coming soon" on their web site for a while now.
TheHypnoToad 09-19-03, 11:37 AM Jeffdbs -
I've done all of the things that you've listed and even tried re-aiming the antenna without success. I still think that there is an issue with the station's PSIP information that my RCA doesn't like and the other STB's can adjust for. Like hdtimmy, I'll keep pestering the station and hopefully one day I'll get an answer. Is anyone else who hasn't re-mapped KSHB-DT to 41-1 seeing it as 42-3?
Kurt
kcroyaljosh 09-19-03, 12:54 PM 1501 and 1502 are currently working at my house. Finally
Is KSHB finally passing the network programming in HD?
ksmith4 09-19-03, 03:47 PM Yes, they were testing the network stuff in HD earlier this week, and last night, both ER and Leno came thru in glorious 1080i. Only Leno on Wednesday nite.
Kendal
kcroyaljosh 09-19-03, 04:54 PM I heard that KCTV 5 was going HD in a couple of weeks, has anybody have an update?
jeffdbs 09-19-03, 07:17 PM Probably 3-4 weeks on KCTV5 CBS HDTV 1080i feed. KCTV5 is hoping to get the decoder next week and then the microwave stuff to get the HDTV 1080i CBS feed to the KCTV tower from KCTV5 HQ in Kansas. Keep hoping for that miracle to see CBS 1080i video and Dolby Digital 5.1 broadcasting from the KCTV5 tower.:)
jeffdbs 09-20-03, 10:31 PM I am showing KCPT (DT-18) as a blank screen. Anyone also not seeing KCPT?:(
kcroyaljosh 09-21-03, 12:45 AM I'm not getting it either.I have a mit 48 inch intergrated and haven't gotten it today.
I've recieved some info for a friend of mine at TWC in KC. He is a VP of engineering, so his information is usually rock solid.
I had asked about KSHB coming online.
He responded,
We are still finalizing an agreement with KSHB for the carriage of their digital signal. As of last week Scripp's lawyers were reviewing the draft agreement.
Technically, we are ready to add them to our line up when we are given the word to proceed.
I expect that we will have KCTV added by the end of this year as well.
On another topic, the HD-DVRs are expected to be available by the end of the year as well.
Notice that last item!! Wow!
fcsmith 09-22-03, 10:44 AM Craash, will the HD-DVRs have firewire ports? DVI? Thanks.

kcroyaljosh 09-22-03, 01:11 PM Does your friend have any word on ESPN-HD coming to TWC?
The contract to carry is still in the works. He was abnormally vauge on that subject. ESPN is still wanting more per viewer than TW wants to pay, considering the lack of programming for a 24/7 "HD" network.
kcroyaljosh 09-22-03, 01:18 PM The October 26, 2003 Chiefs game will be on ESPN and ESP-hd. We need to really hound TWC to get espn-hd. I sent an email to[Glenn.Britt@twcable.com] he is one of the VP's in charge of getting ESPN-hd. Also we have another way of getting the game in HD. I remember that KMBC sometimes picks up espn and broadcasts on channel 9. If that is the case mabye KMBC-DT will broadcast the game in HD. Does anyone have the e-mail for engineering at kmbc?
Josh
Josh,
As much as I want ESPN-HD (playmakers has been awesome so far!), I'm not sure TW is at fault here.
It will not do any of us any good if TW is able to provide ESPN-HD to us, but only at a price that is so high that none of us are willing to pay it!
I firmly believe that the long term benefits of this situation (ESPN-HD at a low (or NO) cost) will out weight the short term pains (missing a small amount of HD programming).
I would expect to see ESPN-HD added to our TW line card after ESPN has their new studios complete and before the end of the year. Maybe.
hdtimmy 09-22-03, 04:15 PM For those of us that cannot receive KSHB and KMCI:
Due to lack of communication via phone and e-mail I am sending out a polite, but stern, snail mail letter to these people today:
General Manager, KSHB-KMCI
Director of Engineering, KSHB-KMCI
Chief Engineer, KSHB-KMCI
Call for Action, NBC Action News
Aaron Barnhart, The Kansas City Star
FCC, Media Bureau, Video Divison
The first part of the letter focuses on their lack of communication with the viewers. Then, I get into the technicial details of the problem.

As a side note, the current 8000 already has firewire ports, but I doubt that anybody is using them.
laser1972 09-22-03, 07:54 PM Big thanks to Hdtimmy for trying the snail mail method.. Hopefully it will be fixed... Cant be that difficult.. I think all the new HDTV stations need to go to KMBC and see how its done correctly... So, far i havent had a problem with MNF or anything of their HDTV programs...
I have emailed them, nothing in response, hopefully just one letter will make that difference... THANKS again!!
Hoping for NBC HDTV soon for my SIR-T150!!:D
jeffdbs 09-22-03, 10:41 PM hdtimmy, Hope this article helps you understand why PSIP is so important for us digital viewers. http://www.trivenidigital.com/psip_pra.pdf See page 6.
Has anybody had any reception problems of Monday Night Football over Comcast?
I'm getting major picture breakup and sound cut outs.
My brother has had fine reception OTA, so if I could prove it wasn't happening only at my house, it would help a lot.
Thanks.
That is correct, they will be the 8000HD. With a Pioneer Interface.
The current 8000 does have firewire ports, but they are de-activated by the current KC TWC software load.

No HD Leno here either. KCPT-DT was coming in at 10:00pm.
kcroyaljosh 09-23-03, 01:34 AM To all TWC hd users, We still do not have ESPN-HD
E-mail to KMBC 9 on carrying espn-hd feed for chiefs game
Dear Mr. Clevenger,
Thank you for writing. We are broadcasting the Chiefs game on October 26; however, we will not have the ESPN-HD feed. ESPN is reserving the HD feed strictly for their cable channel. We will have the analog signal which will be upconverted to our digital channel.
Karen King
Program Supervisor
Also I was told by KSHB that they would be broadcasting the NBC shows in HD when they were given the siginal. They must still be having problems.
Josh
sega19-- I also had major picture breakups and eventually just watched the game on analog. I'm on comcast and I'm hoping it was just a problem with the network...
kcroyaljosh 09-23-03, 09:51 AM To: Bryan Burns VP of Marketing at ESPN
Dear Bryan,
I wanted to know why you have not come to an agreement with Time Warner Cable on adding ESPN-HD. I found out that the hold up was a charge per customer. I am very frustrated that you have not gotten the deal done. I have called the Time Warner and they said that is was in your corner. I just want ESPN-HD and I do not want to get a dish. I have waited for the addition for ESPN on Time Warner Cable since the start of ESPN-HD. Please e-mail me back with information on the carriage of the channel on Time Warner. There a many frustrated Time Warner Cable and Espn subscribers.
Josh Clevenger
Response from Bryan
We hope to come to an agreement with Time Warner soon. We have already signed contracts with the multichannel video providers which cover over 70 per cent of the nation's subscribers, all of which are compensating ESPN for this new service. Included are Comcast, Cox, Insight and other major cable operators in addition to DIRECTV and DISH Network. I hope for both you and for us that Time Warner will soon join the list of operators which have signed up for ESPN HD.
olathebob 09-23-03, 10:07 AM Josh, I did not get Leno in HD either last night. I have Comcast and the KSHB-DT signal is now on channel 183. I know my HD was working properly, because I flipped back between the football game on ABC and the two shows on INHD, all of which looked fantastic (no problems with the football game, as some of the others on this thread have mentioned.) Leno was definitely in SD, with a full picture top to bottom, but bars on both sides. Anyone have thoughts on who to ask about this...Comcast...NBC...KSHB-41?
Bob
kcroyaljosh 09-23-03, 01:57 PM If anyone is interested I started a thread on ESPN-HD on Time Warner that will give contact info for vp's of both companies so mabye we can get something done. Thanks here is the link

Does anyone know if the ESPN-HD feed will be blacked out for the Oct. 26 Chiefs game?
jeffdbs 09-23-03, 09:47 PM sega19- if this is a home game for the Chiefs and the game is not sold out then I believe blackout rules apply.
Thanks Jeff, but I'm not sure you get the jist of my question.
Given that the game is sold out, and being carried in non-HD by the local ABC affiliate, will the game still be available on ESPN-HD?
jeffdbs 09-23-03, 10:31 PM I would say yes to both ABC and ESPN being in HD. I believe ABC and ESPN are the same company. Just call KMBC tomorrow and I bet KMBC will be happy to provide us with the answer to your question.
kcroyaljosh 09-24-03, 03:21 AM KMBC will not carry the hd feed of the espn Sunday night game. You will still be able to get the espn feed from you cable company. If you are able to get espn-hd you will be able to watch it in hd. Us Time Warner cable users are still waiting to see if the will have ESPN-hd by that time.
Josh
ksmith4 09-24-03, 02:20 PM In the past, when KMBC carries the Chiefs game - the other outlets have been blacked out, for me that meant D* - and I would assume the same rules/restrictions apply this time - so probably so for TWC as well.

olathebob 09-24-03, 03:38 PM I just had an interesting conversation with Wil Mistele, Assistant Chief Engineer at KSHB-41, regarding NBC HD programs. It seems the only NBC programs that are being sent from the network in 16X9 HD format are West Wing, ER, Boomtown and Leno. The other shows, such as Frasier, Whoopie, ED, etc. that are listed as HD are in fact HD, but are sent in 4X3 format, with bars on both sides. I've never heard of a network sending two different formats of HD for their programs. Neither had Wil and his department, until they began getting calls from viewers asking about this and checked it out. I did point out that for the past few nights, Leno was in this 4X3 format, at least on my cable system (Comcast Olathe channel 183) and he said he'd check into it.
Psyclguy 09-24-03, 03:49 PM I had an interesting conversation with two of the engineers at KSHB today.
I wanted to know why they were not passing the HD signal from the network any longer.
I was told that they were, but that only a few of the HD programs that are broadcast by NBC are in the widescreen format. The others are in HD but in 4 x 3 format. (Does this make sense?) I told them that when I viewed Fraser last night, a program that was supposedly broadcast by the network in HD, it was in 4 x 3 and the PQ didn't seem any better than their analog signal.
At this time, they told me, their engineering department has to manually switch their equipment to HD whenever a program from the network is broadcast in HD. They also said that hopefully by the end of this month, this will be done automatically by their equipment.
It could be that someone in the KSHB engineering department is asleep at the wheel.
I also wonder if they're just blowin' smoke.
Psyclguy 09-24-03, 03:53 PM olathebob,
We must have posted at the same time. Looks like they're giving the same story to everyone.
By the way, I get my reception thru DirecTV and OTA.
olathebob 09-24-03, 04:01 PM Psyclguy,
I just sent an e-mail to NBC asking if this is true, and if so, why? Who knows if I'll get an answer, but if I do, I'll be sure to post it.
olathebob 09-24-03, 04:07 PM Psyclguy, I forgot to ask if you're also getting Leno in this 4X3 format with bars on the side. According to KSHB it's one of the chosen few shows that should be in 16X9. Just curious if someone getting HD by DirecTV and OTA is having the same problem I am.
Mutiny32 09-24-03, 04:18 PM Thei chiefs game on ABC will be in HD, because it's an away game.
rboster 09-24-03, 05:39 PM I did notice that Las Vegas was broadcast in 16x9 in the opening..then I switched by to ABC....ten mintues back to LV and it's was 4:3. I think they are having problems and don't want to own up to it.
Ron
Psyclguy 09-24-03, 09:24 PM The West Wing tonight is in 16 x 9 widescreen mode; the PQ is better than analog but is not as good as HDNET, Discovery HD, ESPN HD, or even ABC's HD broadcasts.
I'll check out Leno tonight.
jeffdbs 09-24-03, 09:54 PM If West Wing is a film transfer to HDTV then West Wing will not look as sharp as a show or sport program captured in HDTV. Leno is captured in HDTV and will look sharper than a film transfer.
FrugalRacer 09-24-03, 10:56 PM From the NBC website:
What shows does NBC currently broadcast in high-definition?
American Dreams, Boomtown, Crossing Jordan, Ed, ER, Frasier, In-Laws, Hidden Hills, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno are currently broadcast in HDTV. Occasionally, theatrical films and made-for-TV movies are also broadcast in the high-definition format.
What are the advantages of HDTV?
There are several benefits to viewing programs in high-definition.
Clarity. The digital signal is crystal clear and noise-free.
Wide-screen picture. Traditional televisions use a 4 by 3 aspect ratio, which means the screens are 4 units wide by 3 units high. However, theatrical films are usually much wider, taking advantage of the actual human field of vision. HDTV uses a wider 16 by 9 aspect ratio, which delivers movies with less "edge cropping" and provides a more intense viewing experience.
No mention of certain shows being in 4:3. Sounds like 41's having some problems and don't want to admit it.
When is COMCAST in KANSAS CITY going to add DISCOVERY HD THEATER to their channel lineup?? I see it listed for Independence, MO only ... but not in Olathe/Overland Park KS. Anyone know the status of that?
jeffdbs 09-24-03, 11:22 PM NBC HDTV problems thread. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=305522
Leno is HD for the moment!!
Psyclguy 09-24-03, 11:49 PM Leno is in widescreen HD on my receiver tonight.
olathebob 09-25-03, 12:18 AM Maybe there's something to what the Channel 41 engineer told me today. I watched West Wing...supurb 16X9 HD picture. Then I simply left it on for the next show, Law and Order, advertised as being in HD. It was in 4X3 with bars on both sides. The engineer told me that they discovered West Wing, ER, Boomtown and Leno are the only NBC HD programs coming down in 16X9. Sure enough, Leno was in 16X9 HD on Comcast tonight. I could understand if a master control operator simply forgot one night to push the HD button. But I can't believe any station would deliberately remove the HD for the very next show after having it on for the show before. That makes me think it really is NBC's decision, for some reason, to send most of their HD programs in 4X3 and having 16X9 for just the four shows mentioned. Any thoughts?
Psyclguy 09-25-03, 06:53 AM It could be that it is the network screwing with us.
Regarding the shows that are in 4 x 3 format that the network states at the beginning are broadcast in HD where available, I don't think they're in HD. When I compare these programs with the analog broadcast, the PQ is not much different. If they were in HD there should be a striking difference.
Also, if these are film transfers, as Jeffdbs says, then they would have been transferred to the 16 x 9 format.
I think NBC doesn't have their HD act together yet.
rboster 09-25-03, 10:30 AM It's either NBC nat. or local that is having the problems. I would bet a paycheck that it's NOT NBC's intention to have HD content in 4:3...but it's the result of the lack of HD feed and NBC broadcasting an upconverted signal.
Ron
GVbhunt 09-25-03, 11:03 AM Eyedox,
I have Comcast HDTV in Grain Valley (Just east of KC for anybody that does not know) and if Comcast says that Independence has Discovery HD Theater then they have not pushed it out to us yet. I have sent a couple of emails to Comcast this week and last week asking the same question but no answer yet.
I live in Independence and I don't have DiscoveryHD as of yet. I'm sure it will be here soon enough along with CBS. Any news on FOX?
Anyone having problems with ABC? Every since MNF I've been getting some serious tiling and I'm just wondering if it's Comcast, ABC, or something on my end? I'd rather spare myself the agony of calling them if it's not necessary.
ksmith4 09-25-03, 06:01 PM olathebob -
I agree - I noticed a couple of glitches in L&O on 41-1 last night. I think the engineering staff may have been trying to set it to HD/16x9 - obviously, it didn't work. we watched in 4x3 - on 41-1, it sure looked like SD for the whole show.

I wouldn't count on CBS before the end of October, they still don't have the equipment last I heard. As for FOX, no HD until fall 04. I have TWC and ABC is working perfectly for me, so it must be a Comcast issue.
Jerm, I've also been having major problems with 180(abc HD) ever since Monday. I'm trying to watch Threat Matrix right now and its really bad. I keep having to switch to analog.
I live in Greenwood.
Well, I called Comcast.
First they hit my box ( of course), then she proceeded to try an setup an appointment to come out to my house.
I told her that the last time a tech came out, they told me that the next time this happens to try to talk to the tech monitoring the feeds.
I also told her someone in Independence was having the same problem.
She said the guys that monitor the feed are gone for the night and she would talk to them in the morning and give me a call.
I guess well just have to see what happens. I told her that I wanted it fixed before MNF. She then inquired how good football looked, and I said AWESOME when it comes in well (unlike Monday, thank goodness it was a blowout)
Have any other ideas on how to get this fixed?
Mutiny32 09-26-03, 12:03 AM I live out near Lake Lotawana and I also had pixelation and glitching problems with MNF. I screwed with my amplifier 4 or 5 times to get the signal to work. I couldn't ever get it. I thought it was just too weak or too strong of a signal. Glad to hear it wasn't just me.
Sega19--- I've got no ideas on what might work. When I first got the HD box I couldn't get SHOHD or ABC and after four service calls with no luck I thought I had found the problem in a bad splitter. Sad that I had to be the one to find the problem with four different techs coming to my house... I hadn't had any problems for two months until MNF now all my problems are back. ABC goes nuts when any HD is on. ShoHD seems to have calmed down as of yesterday but this is getting really old. Considering the piss poor service I've received from comcast it might be time for a change. The last time they came I showed the tech how to get into the diagnostic menu and he didn't even know what the hell it was? Couldn't tell me why there were poor signals on the SNR or the AGC... I don't feel like even bothering with a phone call at this point.
D* users are you happy with them? Good PQ on SD channels? Do you get tiling or smearing or any negatives on HD channels?
ksmith4 09-26-03, 12:14 PM D* user here....
Love it, good PQ on SD - much better since the ISF calibration on the set. It's not cheap, we get NFL Sunday Ticket, NHL Center Ice, HD package, I get the local HD OTA. But I'm very happy with it. Excellent PQ on the HD stuff - HDNet is still much better than HBO or Sho.
Hope that helps.
Kendal
TheHypnoToad 09-26-03, 07:56 PM Another D* user chimes in...
Not to make it a "me too" post but just like Kendal, I've been very pleased with D* particularly the HD offerings. Although I would say that the quality of the standard definition stuff has dropped off in quality over the last few years (I've been with them since 1996) due to compression issues and the number of transponders that they have available to them on each satellite.
It's not cheap particularly if you start adding things like the college and major league sports packages (Sunday Ticket, MLB, etc.) but that's half of the fun of having the dish. Sunday Ticket has even thrown in two HD football games each week (the CBS 1080i game and the Fox 480p widescreen game [OK maybe it's only one HD football game]). HDNet is even going to carry up to three HD NHL games a week so that should be sweet as well.
All in all it's been well worth the money that I've spent and if they come through with a DirecTiVo HD recorder with off-air HD recording capability like has been mentioned in other threads, I may have to chuck my ReplayTV units and give them more money.
jeffdbs 09-26-03, 10:24 PM Let us not forget the Holy Grail of HDTV by small dish-Dish Network. Dish Network has no compression issue in HDTV. A HDTV PVR is available in October and now you can get a Dish Network model 6000 along with the 8VSB OTA module for as low as $149.00. With the Super Dish being available as a free upgrade in November-Dish Network will have the capacity to add 50 more non compression HDTV channels. Check out the latest HDTV lineup from Dish Network http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/programming/hdtv/index.asp
Jeff, I believe the compressions issues being discussed were in SD.
First, let me say that if I could add a dish and pay for JUST the HD content (just the current 7 or 8 depending on company) AND NFL Sunday Ticket I would - assuming it was priced reasonable.
After saying that, let me continue by saying it looks like TWCKC has a larger offering of HD material than either little dish. They will also have an HDPVR out by the end of the year AND it will be able to serve recorded or time-shifted content to all of the other digital boxes in the home.
Clear winner? The consumer, of course! The only thing better than HD, is having a choice as to how you get it.
Had a TIVO lineup change message this morning that had adds for TWC
1431 KMCI
1441 KSHB
They didn't come up, but maybe it really is soon now.
jeffdbs 09-27-03, 02:36 PM "Voom" satellite HDTV service will also be available soon here in Kansas City. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=300651
Mutiny32 09-28-03, 04:37 PM As I'm watching the Chiefs-Ravens game, I'm annoyed by the delay from the upconverting KCTV is doing. We have a TV upstairs with the SD signal, and then the HDTV downstairs showing the HD signal. There is at least a 5-8 second delay between the two. The HD signal is way behind. I find this very annoying, especially when I'm trying to listen to the announcers on KCFX instead of the guys on the TV. You already know what happened in the play before it even starts on TV. Bah.
Michael.Chrisco 09-28-03, 08:11 PM Jsut a note.
I have that happen even when HD isnt involved. With a sony vs samsung STB. Sammys always delayed.
JulianHtun 09-28-03, 10:32 PM 1) When Fox 4 will increase its votage? I can't get it with rabit ear from Shawnee West.
2) ESPN HD from DirecTV looks much better than Alias shows. Why? I thought both ESPN HD and Alias are broadcasting 720p?
3) Jay Leno looks awesome with HD. What format does it broadcasting, is it 1080i?
Thanks,
-Julian
jeffdbs 09-28-03, 11:10 PM 1)WDAF is broadcasting a digital signal (480p) on channel 34 at low power. The programming is the same as channel 4. WDAF's digital signal can be seen on Time Warner Cable. If you do not have cable and live outside of our low power coverage area, you may not be able to see our digital signal. From our tower (Summit at 31st Street), our area of low power coverage is approximately 12-15 miles depending on terrain. WDAF has no immediate plans to increase digital power. (From WDAF website)
2) KMBC-DT is 720p is your box upconverting to 1080i? On my box KMBC-DT ABC looks great. Alias may be a film transfer to HDTV. Check out Monday Night Football on KMBC-DT.
3) KSHB-DT is 1080i
4) Welcome-glad your here at our HDTV forum :)
CANNON-FODDER 09-28-03, 11:15 PM Mutiny32,
There is a 1-2 second delay between both the ABC and FOX standard vs HD feeds on the TWCKC Pioneer Voyager HDTV cable box. If I change the channel from the SD to the HD version, I get to see a second of what I saw before I changed the channel.
This second of 'deja-view' happens even after the second or two of black screen while the box/TV gears up for displaying HD stuff.
I have selected 1080i as the output resolution on the STB, and I don't know if the SD is output differently, letting a potential TV resolution change be part of the problem, but since the cable guide is so slow and clumsy on the HD channels, I tend toward ignoring the TV as a factor.

kcroyaljosh 09-29-03, 11:36 AM Any more news on KCTV 5 going HD? As of a few weeks ago they ordered the equipment.
ksmith4 09-29-03, 03:40 PM Josh - soon, and nothing new on KCTV from what we've heard. Maybe Aaron Barnhart has some input - I'll call and leave a message today if I get a chance.
On another note - anybody have any ideas on the NBC HD material on KSHB???, nothing I've seen in primetime except the letterboxed shows (like Law & Order), all those shows that are supposed to be HD, are all coming thru as SD.
Kendal
Bradtothebone 09-29-03, 06:09 PM Kendal-
I don't know what's going on with KSHB. Apparently, it's a combination of network problems and local problems. The only shows I've actually seen in HD on 41-1 are ER and Leno. The other times I've tuned in expecting HD, I've been disappointed (Frazier, American Dreams come to mind - there may have been others).
According to a thread in HDTV Programming, there have been network problems with Lyon's Den, among others (SVU, maybe).
At any rate, it doesn't seem like NBC/KSHB have their respective acts together yet.
On the KCTV front, weren't they about 4 weeks away, 2 weeks ago? They had to upgrade their microwave station-to-transmitter (STL) link, if I remember correctly, as well as add the HDTV transcoder.
Brad
ksmith4 09-29-03, 06:24 PM Thanks Brad - I haven't had much time to browse over in the Programming forum lately...I'm sure you're right on that - it's not making sense. West Wing was excellent last week, but again that one is letterbox.
On KCTV, I remain hopeful - and your timeframe is accurate on the 2-4 weeks ago. Maybe in two weeks from CBS 1080i ?!?!!!!!

Do you think there would be interest in a KC area forum with a dedicated discussion area for each station, mode of reception (TWC, Everest, OTA, ect) and other strickly KC HDTV stuff?
wruss64 09-30-03, 04:59 PM I also have the HD200 since last February, I love it. I have never figured out how to manually add channels. I just always use the auto search, which of course takes longer, if you find out how to do that manual addition of channels please let me know. I always have to reprogram it after i move my antenna away from WIBW CBS in topeka to get ABC 9.1 in KC.
thanks

OK to add manually, go to menu, then setup, then add channel manually, then type in the station number, then hit select. It's SUPER easy and what I plan to do with the other stations that I for some reason don't see, for example NBC, which apparently according to Titan TV is located at 42 and CBS is 24 or something.......
Thanks for the help on the Titan TV !!!!
OH yeah....
While I'm thinking about it, I have noticed that when I set up the channels on the Sat HD200, I got all the channel info and program listings from the channels it found on directv, but nothing but "regular programming" on the channels, both analog & digital that it found from OTA. Is there anything I can do to rectify that so I can delete the analog channels from my program listings???
Thanks.

JulianHtun 09-30-03, 08:44 PM I can't scan it with my Samsung 160 for 2 days now.
Thanks,

wruss64 09-30-03, 10:35 PM As I mentioned before I love the HD200 and it is easy to use. However when i try to manually add a station ie: channel 13 WIBW out of topeka it will find analong but not digital. If I do that auto search and go through all of the channels, it will find it then. Not sure why, but not that big of a hassle to do the autoscan.
thanks
Michael.Chrisco 10-01-03, 07:15 PM Thanks Jeffdbs,
I did notice the following though.
34 - WDAF-DT -- FOX
Kansas City (Jackson) MO
B'casting power: 1000 kW
Complete FCC data
HM how come they say 1000kW but the web site says its low power with no plans to increase.
Psyclguy 10-01-03, 08:41 PM Can anyone receive KSHB's digital signal tonight?
jeffdbs 10-01-03, 09:00 PM KSHB-DT 42 is a dead stick in the ground tonight.:( I wish KMBC engineers would pay a visit to all the local digital broadcaster engineers and show these stations how to run a successful digital HDTV broadcast just like KMBC-DT has done since day one.:D
HuskerT 10-01-03, 09:13 PM I cant receive KSHB tonight either. What is the difference between 41-1 and the digital channel 27 I think? BTW this is my first post. I just got my HD equipment a couple of weeks ago. with OTA rabbit ears for local networks. Looking forward to talking with you guys.
jeffdbs 10-01-03, 10:08 PM Welcome HuskerT- Are you receiving a digital signal on channel 27 Over the Air? DT 41-1 is KSHB digital channel when the station is on the air.
HuskerT 10-01-03, 10:14 PM No, when I receive KSHB it is 41-1. I used 27 as an example. What I meant was 42. Is there a difference between 41-1 and digital channel 42? Past nine and still no 41-1 for the night. Thanks for the welcome and I look forward to chatting with all of you By the way I have the samsung sir ts-160.
jeffdbs 10-01-03, 10:26 PM HuskerT- Digital broadcasters use "channel mapping" to help people find their old analog channel in the new digital television arena. KSHB DT-42 is channel map to 41-1 to match KSHB analog 41 channel that we all familiar with. KMBC DT-07 is channel map to 9-01, KCTV DT-24 is channel map to 5-01...... Hope this helps.
ksmith4 10-01-03, 11:26 PM No West Wing HD tonight...I'm p***ed !!

kcjefff 10-02-03, 11:10 AM I called KSHB yesterday to see if I could talk to an engineer about why TWC is as of yet not passing their signal along. The front desk receptionist said all the engineers were out at the tower, so maybe that's an indication they are having problems with the transmission side of their signal? Maybe this is also why Comcast keeps adding and taking away the signal and TWC has chosen not to add it yet. TW is probably just trying to avoid the headache of users calling everytime KSHB's signal drops.
laser1972 10-02-03, 06:18 PM Got this email today from KSHB
We did some changes on the PSIP information. Please let me know if this has helped the issue with your Samsung T-150 HDTV box on receiving channel 36 or 42.
Thanks, Wil Mistele
I tried it and i finally have channel 41 on my Samsung T-150.. :D :)
No 36 yet, but at least they are trying and keeping me posted.. I do appreciate that..
Hopefully i will see some HDTV Leno?..
BTW, Karen Sisco looked great last night in HDTV.. I love Carla Gugino ....
HuskerT 10-02-03, 07:30 PM Hi everyone! Like I said earlier I am still new at this hdtv. So I was wondering if there is a reason I cannot receive 62-1. I have heard/read all the reasons why I don't get 4-1 but I thought every other channel had enough power. BTW I live about a mile south of the Great Mall in Olathe.
Thanks for the help so far.
hdtimmy 10-02-03, 07:57 PM Just like laser1972, I also received an e-mail from Wil today and I now get 41-1 with my Sammy SIR-T165!!!! I still do not get 38-1 also.
HuskerT, 62 is only running at 9kw. Pretty low power. I have an outdoor antenna in Olathe and do not get it in very strong. Do you have an outdoor antenna? Also, 62 does have some PSIP issues still. It shows up as 47-1 on my receiver when it should be 62-1 and it takes my box a while to lock in. You're not missing much, their analog signal looks MUCH better than their digital signal, at least on my setup at any rate.
jeffdbs 10-02-03, 10:08 PM Yes, KSMO DT-47 has PSIP issues. I have called several times to get KSMO to reset their PSIP information on their digital 47 but to no avail. There are alot of people in the Kansas City metro that have not watch any WB62 programming on DT-47 for six weeks now since KSMO changed their PSIP equipment. Please KSMO DT-47 fix your PSIP.
I used to receive WDAF-DT but it stopped coming in weeks ago. It would be interesting to see what OTA signal strengths others are getting.
I have a roof top antenna aimed at the signal hill towers based on the information at TitanTV (http://www.titanttv.com)
I get the following signal strength on my HD OTA receivers:
Network Station - Channel / Mapped Channel - % Signal Strength
ABC KMBC - 7 / 9-1 - 95%
PBS KCPT - 18 / 19-1, -2, -3 - 91%
CBS KCTV - 24 / 5-1 - 100%
IND KMCI - 36 / 38-1 - 100%
NBC KSHB - 42 / 41-1 - 94%
WB KSMO - 47 / 62-1 - 28% with no signal lock = no picture or sound
UPN KCWE - 31 / 29-1 - 0% - no signal at all but reported to be broadcasting
FOX WDAF - 34 / 4-1 - 0% - no signal at all. Had an outage but is reported to be back on the air.
Not yet Broadcasting - KPXE - 51 - PAX
Please post your results. I'm especially interested in your UPN (29-1) and FOX (4-1) results.
jeffdbs 10-05-03, 11:15 PM DTSfan- I am receiving UPN KCWE 31/ 29-1 ok at 93% tonight. Still no go on WDAF 34/ 4-1. What is your location?
kcjefff 10-06-03, 05:25 PM Craash are you still with us?
Hey, I was wondering if you ever found out about the manual channel tuning trick for the new Pioneer Boxes? I remember you had a friend who gave you the trick for tuning channels not in the lineup on the SAs and you had mentioned finding out about the Pioneers. I was hoping to tune KSHB.
I had posted the trick for the Pioneers . . . I'll go back and look. I don't think you will see KSHB yet. Legal paperwork is still in work.
Here is my post concerning the Pioneer 3510
----------
Here's the key to the hidden channels on the 3510. Hold the "Select" and the "<>" keys. Wait 10 seconds and then enter 1500.
----------
I don't remember if I tried it or not, there seems to have been some confusion as to how it worked.
kcroyaljosh 10-06-03, 05:55 PM what is this hidden channel thing on TWC? I get all the hd channels.
Josh
Josh,
It's just a way to force a channel to tune in prior to TWC officially making it available. They can add a channel to the lineup but not make it active. That is what happened with Discovery HD. By using this method, you can tune the channel in. It only works if the channel has already been added but not active.
Is it possible to check OTA signal strength on a sony sat hd200? Also, is 41 up digitally? My box didn't find it.

I'm located in Northeast Johnson County Kansas. I have a rooftop antenna with an amplifier on the UHF band.
Tonight I'm getting KCWE 31/29-1 just fine with a 100% signal. I ran through the channels during the day for the information in my prior post and 29-1 might have been off the air at that time.
Still no luck on 4-1 and 62-1.
ksmith4 10-07-03, 10:56 AM DTSfan - with an amplifier on the UHF, you may be overdriving the signal. I have two Radio Shack antennas in my attic - one a VHF/UHF combination and the other a UHF only - a small but simple array. They're tied to one line going to the STB input (i'm on the top of a hill in my subdivision with a pretty clear view to the sky - some tall trees across the street but that's it). I'm at 121st & Switzer - south of you I would think by your location description.
I get everything at 100% signal strength except KCPT (18/19-1, 2, 3) - comes in at 50-60%, and WB (47/62-1) - it comes in at 80-90%. WDAF (34/4-1) also comes in and is watchable for me (some minor breakups at times) - it comes in between 30-50%. Every other digital channel pegs the meter at 100% (7/9-1, 24/5-1, 31/29-1, 36/38-1, 42/41-1). Based on your location, I would think you should be receiving better than you describe.

RPMGOLFS 10-07-03, 03:21 PM Did either of you notice a difference in the HD of MNF last night compared to last week? The Greenbay game seemed much cleaner than last nights. I know I don't get as high readings on the digital channels. I'm at 147 & Switzer pretty much at the top of the hill with my antenna in the attic. I'm using an line amp because the signel is split to five outlets in the house. Which direction do you have your antenna facing?
ksmith4 10-07-03, 03:50 PM I added the 2nd antenna (the UHF only) when KSHB/KMCI moved their tower - so it is pointed pretty much West (maybe WNW - my estimate) while the V/U combination is oriented for best signal for all the other analogs - not quite due North, but close - maybe NNW.
I didn't notice a difference - though when one team is wearing white (the Colts last night), I think the cameras are more sensitive and need to be "turned down" so as not to let in too much light - like an F-stop on a 35mm camera - with the GB game - that wasn't the case, and it was outside too - maybe the stadium lights were better. Bottom line, lots of factors at play - hard to tell exactly what's going on - I do know that my signal strength was the exact same for both games.
Kendal
Michael.Chrisco 10-07-03, 04:36 PM Anyone notice the sky cam quality?
Don't expect it to be HD but it is a testimate to the difference.

Kendal - From your location, don't you mean ENE?:p :p :p
I'm pretty lucky in that I'm far enough west that I didn't have to adjust my antenna (UHF/VHF combo) at all to get 36 and 42. 41 analog doesn't come in as clear anymore, however. That's OK, though, 'cause I only watch it on the small tv's.
I thought MNF last night was beautiful as ever. Wish I'd stayed up to watch the end, though. I bailed when TB went up 35-14.

I'm located in Paola KS about 25 miles south of Olathe.

I get everything else digitally, (at least those that are up), but for some reason I'm not gettiing NBC 41 OTA. All else looks good. Though I sure wish 4.1 was really HD for these baseball games.....
Is NBC 41.1 UP?????
Sheesh.
ksmith4 10-08-03, 10:31 AM 41-1 is up, has been for some time now. However, it appears that the only 1080i stuff is the letterbox material from the network....we're pretty sure it's an NBC problem, not necessarily KSHB, but only time will tell.
Kendal
kcroyaljosh 10-09-03, 12:01 AM I read about Movies on demand HD coming to TWC? Has anyone else heard about that? Also they said the HDnet and ESPN-HD will be added in NOV. I'm not sure about this, Check out the link.

OK. So I finally got 41.1 to come in last night....but the signal strength was low, whereas all the other digital signals I'm receiving show as "good" on my sat hd 200. Hmmm. Is everyone else getting a weak signal?
BTW, I'm north about a mile south of barry road off of 169.
ksmith4 10-09-03, 10:39 AM embo9 -
How about 36/38-1? Is that coming in strong - it's on the same tower as 42/41-1. I had to add an antenna because they moved their tower location recently - but they both peg my signal meter at 100%.
Kendal
now that you mention it....I don't think so......but I'm a "work" so I can't check right at the moment, I'll check it out tonight. Thanks.
ksmith4 10-09-03, 11:43 AM Yeah, check tonite. You may need to reorient the antenna (or add another like i did) - they moved maybe 20 degrees for me, so I got a bunch of ghosting, even on the analog, after the tower switch.
Kendal
hdtimmy 10-09-03, 01:08 PM I just received word from Aaron Barnhart that there will be another HDTV update in Saturday's paper. It might be small, though.
Regarding KSHB/KMCI signal: Jim Swinehart, the General Manager, has said "the digital signal is producing funny pockets (like in Lee's Summit!) and that they will be adjusting the [antenna] mount [on the tower]."
ksmith4 10-09-03, 01:57 PM Timmy - anything on the non-letterboxed HD material from NBC?? Like L&O, Ed, etc. - they're still not showing up 1080i here. A guy from Topeka says that regularly forget to "flip the switch" there at his NBC outlet - this is beginning to sound like a KSHB problem and not an NBC issue as we've been led to believe.
Kendal
hdtimmy 10-09-03, 02:29 PM I don't have any info, but I believe it is a KSHB problem. If this was a NBC problem the AVS HDTV Programming forum would be flooded with complaints.
If it's a "flipping the switch" problem then they are consistantly forgetting to switch on the exact same shows every week... that's too strange... It must be something else.
I think I have worn out my e-mail privledges with their engineers over their past PSIP issues.:D
ksmith4 10-09-03, 03:29 PM got an email for Wil Mistele (isn't he the chief eng for KSHB?)??
Lemme know, thx - I'll try my hand at getting us some info.
Kendal
jeffdbs 10-09-03, 07:25 PM Yes, KSHB DT 42 (41-1) is not flipping the switch for 16X9 programs. Hopefully someone at KSHB has order an auto-switch. This is getting real old to sit down to watch an NBC HDTV 16X9 program only to find out someone has forgot to flip the switch at KSHB. Keep those e-mails and phone calls flowing on this KSHB simple fixable switch problem.
It IS a local KSHB problem. I come from WHO-DT in Des Moines Iowa and all of those shows have been HD for a long time. I never had a problem with HD shows coming in SD, so it's the idiot slackers at KSHB on coffee break forgetting to flip the switch. Call them and give 'em hell.
Everest Update: I have Everest and TWC (Everest for phone/internet, TWC for HTDV). Got my everest bill today and it said to watch the November bill for an announcment about HDTV channels and DiscoveryHD and ESPN-HD.
Psyclguy 10-09-03, 08:55 PM Does anyone have the direct email address for Wil Mistele at KSHB?
I think we need to start bombarding them until they get their act together.
When I talked to him on the phone a couple of weeks ago, he told me they had to switch everything manually when the network would broadcast a HD program. He said if he ever got around to it, he would install the equipment to do this automatically.
It's time to build a fire under them.
JulianHtun 10-09-03, 09:32 PM We need to bombard with email to WDAF-DT to increase power. Anybody knows their email?
hdtimmy 10-10-03, 01:24 AM Wil Mistele, Assistant Chief Engineer, KSHB, mistele@nbcactionnews.com
Aaron Barnhart, KCStar Columnist, ab@tvbarn.com
Aaron has been VERY helpful with my KSHB problems. He has better connections with the station than we do.
I didn't get any action from Wil about their PSIP issues until I sent a pretty stern snail mail letter to the General Manager, Director of Engineering, Chief Engineer, Aaron Barnhart, and the FCC.
ksmith4 10-10-03, 06:33 PM Timmy - thanks, I sent him an email today. Nicely toned, nothing harse - not yet anyway. I'll see if/when he responds and go from there.

jeffdbs 10-10-03, 08:17 PM Aaron Barnhart HDTV article. http://tvbarn.com/2003/2003Oct10dtv.html
jeffdbs 10-10-03, 09:07 PM If this article is true http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=311846 then we should all be seeing HDTV on DT 29-1.
Cool! Aaron Barnhart published my complaints in his article! (Jason Pingel)
TWC had an ad book in the KC Star today for DigiPic. The HDTV section did have KCTV 5 HD (1451) as 'coming soon'. Of course 38 & 41 have been coming soon for a couple of months, but maybe.
ksmith4 10-13-03, 12:19 PM KCTV has been "coming soon" for over a year - like Aaron Barnhart said, at least there are other stations trying (KSHB, KMCI). KCTV is a cheap and shoddy operation (not that I'm bitter), but with the true leadership position that CBS has taken on HD - their response, and position, is now and has been a complete joke.
My fondest hope is that this forum and our letters have impacted their spending decisions and that we've had a part in having them finally go true HD - not that we'll ever really know.

Any hints as to how to get OTA program information on my Sony SAT HD 200 ? I get most of the digital channels, but I get no program info. Antenna masters is coming over Thursday to tweak my antenna so we'll get all the digital channels. I'd love to get the programming info on those digital channels so I could just drop the Satellite local channels from my custom guide. You know, fewer channels to surf through.......
Any suggestions are completely welcome and appreciated.
No doubt that KCTV has been pitiful in getting HD up. I thought it was a good sign that TW has moved it to a coming soon. 1st that maybe they are close to broadcasting & 2nd that they have (or are close) to having the contract to carry it. I want to belive that next Monday night won't be the only time I get to see the Chiefs in HD.
kcjefff 10-13-03, 03:22 PM Don't worry, we'll get to see them again in the playoffs and the Super Bowl
Go Chiefs!!!
ksmith4 10-13-03, 03:30 PM Embo9 - I've got local programming information now on all the digitals except KMCI (38/36-1) and KSHB (42/41-1). All the others now come in correctly. KCTV recently started coming in - a few weeks back, I had two 5-1 channels, one with the old standby can't tell anything "Regular Schedule" and the other that showed all the program information.
I think it's a PSIP problem from the local stations, though i haven't rebooted my receiver in a while. I've got a Hughes clone - a Mitsu HD5 STB for the OTA locals.
Kendal
Ron in KC 10-13-03, 05:05 PM I have seen other areas that are receiving ABC shows with DD 5.1, I have not been receiving any DD 5.1 thru TWC on these shows. I have received it on HBO, INHD. I was wanting to know if it was a KMBC or TWC problem.
Thanks,
Ron in KC
Bradtothebone 10-13-03, 05:31 PM KMBC is not broadcasting in DD5.1 yet, but should be very soon. I received an email from them in July saying that they were about 90 days away from broadcasting in 5.1. (That would mean about NOW!)
Brad
fcsmith 10-13-03, 05:51 PM The Chiefs will be on ESPN-HD on October 26. Too bad TWC hasn't struck a deal with ESPN to carry their HD channel yet. I wonder why Comcast can get the deal done, but TWC can't?
jeffdbs 10-13-03, 07:28 PM Don't count KCTV5 out of the ballgame yet on the Chiefs in 1080i on DT-24 (5-01). KCTV5 is moving toward their goal of bringing CBS HDTV 1080i broadcast to Kansas City. KCTV5 does have a solid 480p signal on the air now. KCTV5 engineers are working to install the HDTV equipment. Very soon CBS 1080i and CBS Dolby Digital 5.1 will appear on DT-24 (5-01):)
Psyclguy 10-13-03, 09:23 PM Discovered one drawback of OTA HD reception tonight. ABC's MNF on KMBC digital is constantly breaking up in video and audio due to the lightning.

When is very soon? Based on the months and months of hearing "very soon" I'm not going to get my hopes up until I see a press release from KCTV actually committing to a date.
Just check all of the affiliates' track records with meeting their FCC commitments. None of them have hit the mark and most still aren't broadcasting their full schedule on their digital channels.
What makes KCTV's situation so poor is CBS stepped up and had HD programming first and KCTV still elected to wait.
KMBC has been the best. If the programming is available in HD they broadcast it in HD.
WDAF gets the booby prize for worst performance though. They don't even put out a full-power signal yet they just keep telling people they are and offer no details on when they will actually comply with their FCC commitment.
shawn67 10-13-03, 11:06 PM MNF on KMBC (TWC 1421) is coming in as a 4:3 SD Signal. Anyone else seeing this???

Ohmylord 10-13-03, 11:38 PM MNF on KMBC (TWC 1421) is coming in as a 4:3 SD Signal. Anyone else seeing this???
That's what I'm seeing off my OTA. They better get it right for next Monday's game.
KMBC must be having problems with the storm tonight ... it flickered between HD and SD for awhile tonight ... then stayed SD. Also, the signal broke up many times due to high winds and lightening. We will be fine for next Monday's Chiefs game. No worries.
Is ANYONE getting a digital signal from WB-62 yet on channel 47-DT? I get nothing. Also, KSHB remembered to turn on their HD switch tonight (they forgot Sunday night) although the bad weather made their signal break up more than Jennifer Lopez' marriages.
jeffdbs 10-14-03, 12:11 AM DT-47 (62-1) still has PSIP issues. I just wish KSMO would just get someone in the engineering division to fix the PSIP on DT-47 or just go back to the old PSIP generator so some of us viewers can watch WB62 programming.
kcjefff 10-14-03, 01:00 PM Just thought I would let you all know one drawback to the DVI connection on the new boxes from Time Warner. When you are using the component outputs, you can select any combination of Resolutions that your TV can handle. In my case, that's 1080i, 480p, 480i. So, any 720p coming in gets upconverted by the box to 1080i. If you use the DVI port, you don't have that option in the settings menu, so the DVI can only output the signal as received. No worries for those of whose TVs can upconvert 720p, but mine downcoverts to 480p. When I watch KMBC HD, I must use the component outputs. Just an FYI in case you hadn't noticed.
ksmith4 10-14-03, 03:00 PM I've got no problems at all with PSIP on 62-1/47. I get and can watch all their programming, the signal comes in at 80 - 90% most of the time - even last night when I checked, it was at 93%. Not sure what you're experiencing, but the only times I've had problems with them was a couple of weeks ago when they were totally dark.

Everest update: will launch HTDV in mid-november. Will include Discovery HD, ESPN-HD, HDNet & HDNET movies, KMBC, KSHB. Premium channels HBO HD and Showtime HD. They will not have INHD from day 1. Don't know what is included and how it compares in cost to TWC.
STB will be the Sciatl 3250HD (http://www.sciatl.com/consumers/Exp3250hd.htm) This box has DVI out.

ksmith4 10-15-03, 09:20 AM I have a Mitsu WS-55411 TV with a Mitsu HD-5 STB - the OTA stuff comes from an attic antenna and goes straight into the STB, and obviously, from there to the TV. Sounds like the difference is the "integrated" nature of your TV vs. mine. The channel maps perfectly (unlike Raven) to 62-1 - when I check the signal strength thru the STB, I key in 47, and it comes in at 80-90%.
Sorry I'm not much help, but all is fine here.

FrugalRacer 10-15-03, 09:24 AM I have a Samsung SIR-TS160, and 62-1 has never come in for me. The box always says "Searching for signal, please wait..." or some such.
Just to add, I can receive digital 5, 9, 19, 29, 38 & 41.

Odd.....I wonder why mine maps incorrectly.....I'll try a complete recheck for channels tonight and see if its a in memory thing. I think I recall others as having the mapping problem as well. Another techno glitch I suppose.

I got an Email from Kirk Black, VP-GM of KCTV-5 stating that...
"Our goal is to be HD by the end of September. If we can swing it, maybe as soon as the Chiefs first regular season game."

CANNON-FODDER 10-16-03, 07:00 PM Was there a change to the output format that the Pioneer Voyager HD boxes send across the component connections?
If so, is there a way to get it back to the way it was?
Details:
I used to have the Pioneer STB set to TV=4:3, Aspect=Letterbox 16:9, which gave me (Samsung TXM3297HF) full 4:3 in SD, and letterboxed 16:9 in HD automatically (change channels only, no fooling with anything).
Yesterday evening, I switched over to the HD channels and saw that the 16:9 aspect ratio was now stretched to fill the screen.
I had to set the TV to WIDE (vs leaving it in NORMAL) to see the HD not stretched, and switch it back to watch the SD programs.
-CF (Hoping this is operator headspace and timing, and not a permanent change)
Did you all hear that Zenith is going to sponsor UPN HDTV starting Oct 15th?? Jake 2.0 and Enterprise are now going to be in High Def! Considering the local UPN affiliate here already upconverts all of their stuff to 1080i, I assume they have all their equipment in place to pass the HD network stuff. Has anyone checked or confirmed this?

I asked that question and this is the response I received from UPN-29(DT-31).
Thank you for writing. We will not be able to provide the HDTV broadcast
of Star Trek Enterprise and Jake 2.0 this week but hope to have it
available in the very near future.

ksmith4 10-17-03, 12:42 AM I'll believe it when I see it from KCTV - money talks and b.s. walks - my money says....we'll be lucky to see the reruns of CSI in 1080i.
All show, no go.....90% fluff, 10% stuff. Way to go Meredith!!!
Meanwhile, KSHB at least had both ER and Leno in full 1080i glory tonight!!!, at least they're trying....

Fonman99 10-17-03, 12:27 PM They ay be trying, but when will TWC start carrying NBC in highDef?
kcjefff 10-17-03, 01:50 PM News from both camps is that they are trying to negotiate a carriage agreement. This is a surprising turn of events, considering we all know that TWC never drags carriage agreements talk longer than necessary...
Turning off sarcarsm mode...
Just remember, it took TWC a year to negotiate an agreement with Discovery HD and has yet to snag ESPNHD, 7 months and counting. Obviously TWC does not mind making their subscribers wait for content that other systems already have, why would they? They have little to no competition. Down with Franchising rights!
kcroyaljosh 10-17-03, 01:58 PM I talked with one of the higher ups at TWC and he told me that the deal is done and TWC is waiting on receiving equipment to carry both 38 and 41. That is what he told me, he could have been telling me a lie. He also stated that HDNET was in the works also, along with ESPN-HD which apparently consists of 1/3 of our current cable bill. ESPN wants to charge TWC $.80 per customer to have ESPN-hd. The source also told me that an HD tier will be coming soon.
Josh
kcroyaljosh 10-17-03, 02:09 PM I should rephrase my statement about ESPN. The current ESPN family of networks currently is about 1/3 of our current cable bill. TWC is arguing that the current fee for ESPN and its networks is sufficent and should not have to pay for the same channel again. (ESPN-HD)
Josh
Bradtothebone 10-17-03, 02:23 PM At the current time, ESPN-HD is worth about what they want to charge for it - $.80 or $1.00 - but only for the people who actually can get it, not $.80 per subscriber!
I get it now on Dish, and it's fine, since it's part of a bigger HD package, but for what you get right now - 2 or 3 HD events per week and the SD content stretched to 16:9, I'm not sure I'd pay for it ala carte. They will get better as they add HD content in 2004, though. In other words, TWC may actually be doing you a favor by stringing out the negotiations. When they finally get around to charging you for ESPN-HD (and they will!), you'll be more likely to get your money's worth.
BTW, someone asked about who can and can't get KSMO-DT 47. I can, at about 85-90%, and it comes in as 47-1. It's the only non-HD digital channel that looks better than the corresponding analog channel, IMO.
Brad
It was me that could not receive 47-1 (WB-62). I don't know why it is not coming in. It worked a few months ago when they first powered up. But I am wondering if their signal is low power and not reaching to southern Olathe? Any thoughts? Maybe I need to reset my Mits HDTV and try, try again?

Eyedox,
I'm about 68 miles away and get it, so power shouldn't be the problem unless your much farther away than that. I'd have to check, but don't remember the antenna being directional.
I just talked with one of the engineers at WB-62 (KSMO) today. He said that they are broadcasting at 9kw with no immediate plans to increase the power. Also, they have not ordered their HD equipment yet and probably will not be passing HD from the network until next fall. He mentioned that they have had bigtime problems with their PSIP info but said it should be all fixed as of last week.
TitanTV had PAX-TV in KC listed as Sept 30th for live date on DT. Anyone have any clue when they are going to be on the air?
Psyclguy 10-17-03, 08:39 PM I can't receive a picture on KSMO's digital signal either on my Samsung TS160. The signal strength is good, but no picture. I also initially received it when they first powered up.
