Do your TVfool plot for the exact address and post the link to it.
If conditions are decent, it shouldn't be hard to do based solely on distance (which, by itself, is not enough).
Never heard of TVFool but will do so asap.

dlnester 05-18-09, 09:48 PM TIME WARNER CABLE DROPPING HDNet
From EngadgetHD.com (Owned by AOL/Time Warner)
Bad news for Mark Cuban, not only are his Dallas Mavericks out of the NBA Playoffs, but Time Warner Cable is dropping HDNet and HDNet Movies on all of its systems on May 31. Hopefully this doesn't mark the beginning of the end of the network MOJO HD-style, especially since we've heard of the network sliding onto new Comcast systems recently, but TWC PR director Robyn Watson doesn't seem optimistic, saying "being in HD is not enough." Ouch. Still, fans of Art Mann Presents and the like take heart, the "24x7 HD Network for men" MavTV is launching on the HD Xtra tier at the beginning of June.

mgsports tends to be a little long-winded, as well as being incomplete in his explanations (like are these lineup changes for TWCKC or Comcast or Everest/Surewest). Especially when his links don't work. :D
blueparkway 05-21-09, 10:17 PM Will Time Warner be deleting basic cable channels and shutting off analog feed and moving them to the digital tier in the future like in the northeast? Just curious.
The reason is this....One analog channel takes up the space of 2 HD or 6 SD channels So TimeWarner will run out of bandwidth if they don't delete digital channels.
Anybody know about the other cable companies as well?
I thought I read some time ago in the engineering trades that the FCC was requiring cable companies with analogue tiers to continue to carry them for at least a couple of years. But I have no documentation to back this up. Maybe it depends on the type of agreement between the cable company and a particular city.
Personnally, I would like to have the option to not receive the analogue tier and for about the same price get the digital tier (with free HD, TWC) and receiver. Almost every channel I watch in analogue is offered in the free HD part of the digital tier.
mgsports 05-22-09, 12:48 PM Comcast in Boston and Chicago have gotten rid of Analog Channels when they moved them to the Digital Side and when you go to the Channel it says check it out on the Digital Side. It will just make people get Digital Cable.
Better yet get rid of SD Channels and low prices of HD TV'S to under 200 Hundred dollars.
Only Local's stay on Analog Tier.

Jayhawk 05-27-09, 08:21 AM On TW, the guide has been showing that FSNKC-HD is broadcasting Cardinals games for the last week, but the Royals games are actually being broadcast.
It's frustrating because you have to go online to look up the Royals broadcast schedule, and hope that there's a Cardinals game at the same time so you can record it. If there's no listing, you can't record the channel at all.
Today, for example, the Royals play in HD at 1:00. The guide shows the Cardinals game at 12:00, so I will record it, and pad the recording an extra 2 hours (instead of the normal 1 hour).
I'm just curious if this is happening on Comcast or Everest in KC. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks!
dlnester 05-27-09, 08:39 AM On Everest/SureWest it just says "MLB Baseball" on FSN KC. In the description it says "Royals vs. XX" They've always been correct for me.
RobertBruce 05-29-09, 01:11 PM Having issues with Comcast distribution of Fox4 audio the last few days. I only use digital audio from the box and it has been stuttering, dropping out constantly. The channel just up also doing the same, but all others are fine.

and added Smithsonian HD, Mav TV and RFD in their place.

Good Evening - I have an OTA HD antenna in zip code 64108. Usually I have no problem receiving any and all OTA HD stations. However tonight I only have a black screen on all my HD channels. I reconnected all wires, and reloaded all channels, but still the black screen. ???
KSBugeater 06-02-09, 11:55 AM twb,
What tuner do you have?
Is there audio to go with the black screens?
Did the resolution get set to one your TV won't support?
Are you sure you're on the right input?
Answers below...thanks for trying to help.
twb,
What tuner do you have? PIONEER PDP-R06U
Is there audio to go with the black screens? NO
Did the resolution get set to one your TV won't support? GOOD THOUGHT, BUT NO VIDEO ON ANY RESOLUTION.
Are you sure you're on the right input? YES
About 6-8 months ago I noticed I was being charged for a "HD Tier" even though Time Warner is the "home of free HD". So I called them and they said it was for 2-3 channels, those of which were yanked a week or two ago. I think it was HDNet and a couple others.
So needless to say I am still getting charged ~$6.00 a month for this so called HD Tier. So I emailed them and they have not changed those channels to 2 channels that were once free, (1283) Hallmark Movie and Channel HD (1284) Lifetime Movie Network. I do not watch those channels so I called them this morning and told them to cancel those channels and remove it from my bill.
It may seem like not a huge charge but something for you guys to watch out for. It could save you $70.00 a month. I told them it was total bs that they dropped the channels it was initially for and conveniently switched that fee to cover 2 other channels.
KSBugeater 06-03-09, 10:03 AM Hmm, twb. I'm not familiar with the Pioneer, and we just eliminated most of the simple solutions. Is it possible it got hit by a lightning surge? Otherwise, I'd take your question to a different forum here on AVS that may have experience with the Pioneer tuner. Here is a link for a service manual, if you're so inclined for $10:

dbachman,
WELCOME to the KC HDTV Forum!
KMBC Channels 9.1 and 9.2 are received OTA on RF channel 29. Kansas City digital OTA stations are all in the UHF portion of the spectrum now, so only a UHF antenna is needed for all. Depending where you are in the city, you may need to point different directions to see all of the signals, or get a less-directional antenna. You can determine the directions to all of the transmitters on tvfool.com (http://tvfool.com) (recommended) or antennaweb.org (http://antennaweb.org) (not as good, but not as technical). Just for reference, KMBC's transmitter is at 23rd and Topping in KC MO.
If you are receiving KCWE 29.1 (CW) and 29.2 (THIS TV), both on RF channel 31, there could be another issue since they broadcast from the same tower. Hope this helps.....
Brad

I cancelled that HD Tier today, especially after the dropped HDNet and HDNETM and replaced if with that RFD and other garbage. While I was there I told them to kiss off on the Cin/Max/HBO/Starz/TMC, as well as a standard box with DVR. By my count I kicked TWC in the nuts for $44 inreduced services today...WOOT

By sometime next Friday analog NTSC television over-the-air turns off forever! It is the end of an era of broadcasting that began more than 50 years ago. Throw away those tired old VHF antennas, there will be no VHF post-transition. So, for those just joining the forum and not yet fully prepared for digital TV in Kansas City, and for all those needing a UHF antenna, I would like to tell you where to find a good, no a very good antenna. Check out the ClearStream antennas on the Antennas Direct website, AKA Terrestrail Digital, and learn about what I think is the hands-down best UHF antenna for OTA reception. You can read a review at this site:http://www.indoorhdantenna.com/pages/Clearstream-Antenna-Reviews.html
Or go to http://www.antennasdirect.com for the company website. They are a Missouri company near St. Louis who make a variety of very good antennas and realated RF gear.
The ClearSteam2, a good choice for metro Kansas City, retails for about $100 at Best Buy. For the best deal that I know of, you can order the ClearStream2 from Target for $72 with free shipping. It is not available in the store.
Remember, for the very best in HDTV reception you need an antenna; cable and satellite HD channels are compressed. Only OTA TV gives you full, uncompressed HD signals.

ProjectSHO89 06-07-09, 06:36 PM Throw away those tired old VHF antennas, there will be no VHF post-transition.
As for Kansas City and St Louis, that is correct.
However, adjacent markets of Topeka, Springfield, and Columbia-Jeff City (to name a few) will all have high-VHF broadcasters. The C2 would probably do fine in those locations out to about 25 miles for the high-VHF, depending on the station's broadcast power and the signal path to the viewer's home. YMMV definitely applies.

I went in to switch out a box and see what was on my bill Icould shed to save some money. I never requested the HDTier? When I called and got HD last year, I was told it was free. Now I find out that they have been charging me $6 a month for a year for something I never asked for. Did any of you ask for the HDTier or did it just show up on your bill?
dbachman 06-08-09, 10:45 AM Bradtothebone,
Thanks for the reply. I am still a little confused. Is the ABC channel you are referring to just local news, weather, etc. or the network channel where I can view all the normal ABC programming such as the NBA finals right now, LOST, etc.? The Time Warner Cable channel equvilent for the one I am looking for is channel 12 or 1421 on HD. I just want to be able to get the ABC network programming over the air. Is channel 29/9.1 going to get me that? Because right now my tuner scan finds the channel but can't tune it in but the reception for the other network channels is perfectly clear and they are about the same distance so I'm not sure why I'm not getting the ABC network channel right now. Thank you.
KSBugeater 06-08-09, 12:26 PM Dbachman, your tuner must having problems with the PSIP data for KMBC 9.1 (RF 29). There used to be a KMBC employee who read this forum, with the username technicalitalian. He might be able to explain why this is the only station not viewable by you, despite a good signal level. You also might visit http://www.kmbc.com/contactus/index.html
and direct your question to Engineering...
or call 816-221-9999 and let KMBC know you can't see them... nothing should move them to action faster than knowing a viewer won't see them after Friday.
Bradtothebone 06-08-09, 04:15 PM Bradtothebone,

KMBC (virtual channels 9.1 and 9.2) now broadcasts digitally on channel 29. Your TV may be confused because KMBC USED TO broadcast digitally on channel 7. You may need to go into the menu and delete the "old" KMBC and then rescan, or add RF channel 29 manually. This is easier on some TVs than others, so your mileage may vary. Some will automatically delete all the old channels on a rescan, others don't.
Yes, you can watch all the ABC network shows on KMBC over the air.:cool:
Brad
dbachman 06-09-09, 01:58 PM After further digging, I found the issue. It is Windows Media Center (WMC) related. It recognizes 9.2 but not 9.1 or vice versa. It will not let me delete the old channel and add a new one manually or edit the existing one. WMC isn't very good when it comes to manual adjustments. I used Avermedia's software that came with the usb tuner and rescanned and it found both 9.1 and 9.2 and let me tune to both channels. WMC seems to be lumping these two channels together or something. I gave up trying to fix it in WMC and am just using the Avermedia software for tuning in.
dlnester 06-09-09, 03:04 PM KCTV-5 will broadcast 3 of the 4 Chiefs Pre-Season games in HD according to the Chiefs Website.
The Kansas City Chiefs and KCTV5 announced on Tuesday that the Chiefs Television Network is set to broadcast all four Chiefs preseason games to 10 different markets in a five-state region that includes Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Anchored by KCTV5 in Kansas City, the Chiefs Television Network will broadcast the club’s first three preseason games in HD, while Kansas City’s final preseason contest will be telecast in a 16x9 format in SD.
CBS Sports NFL play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan will officially join the Chiefs Television Network to call a pair of preseason games for Kansas City in 2009. Harlan will be in the booth for the club’s games at Minnesota (8/21) and vs. Seattle (8/29).
bballcards 06-10-09, 01:34 AM Hey, guys...
I just moved from St. Louis, so I'd like some Time Warner Kansas City experts to help me (and before anyone comments otherwise, Time Warner is the ONLY option for me due to condo rules) --
Does anyone know if MLB Extra Innings is accessible (after paying for it, of course) on TiVo Series 3 or TiVo HD via CableCard / Tuning Adapter?
Also, are channels 1501 (MGM HD), 1506 (Universal HD), 1507 (Smithsonian HD), and 1508 (MavTV HD) part of a separate paid package, or are they simply not accessible via CableCard / Tuning Adapter?
Thanks in advance!!
KSBugeater 06-10-09, 10:18 AM KCTV-5 will broadcast 3 of the 4 Chiefs Pre-Season games in HD according to the Chiefs Website.
Great news! Bad football never looked so good...
Last year's preseason games looked like they were on YouTube. (I watched as many as possible on NFL Network in HD)
Having said that, I am optimistic that ScottTodd will get the Chiefs "marching on to victory, like the mighty teams of old!"
escapecar 06-10-09, 10:38 AM I can't really help on the first question, but take a look at tvbarn.com. That's the blog of Aaron Barnhardt, the TV writer for the KC Star. He has written about his ongoing problems with TWC and CableCards.
And yes, 1501, 1506, 1507, and 1508 are part of a separate package. (One that I'll probably be dropping soon, since HDNet is gone and Universal HD isn't showing anything I like anymore.)
However, it's possible that they won't be available via CableCard. From what I've read, if TWC provides a channel via Switched Digital Video, then a CableCard may not be able to deal with it.

Thanks in advance!!
dlnester 06-10-09, 11:25 AM For the Time Warner question....
A vast majority of Time Warner Cable's HD channels are delivered via Switched Video technology. This technology made non-two-way cable cards obsolete (such as the Tivo Series 2)
What you need is a tuning adapter. You should be able to get this from your local Time Warner Cable store.

DurhamHusker 06-10-09, 12:36 PM After further digging, I found the issue.
I had the same problem with MCE 2005. It is possible to edit, but you need to do some of it by hand first.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\eHome\EPG\prefs\atscchannels.xml with Notepad for editing.
Remove the lines containing KMBC and save it. Close the file ... everything else will be done from with the MCE application.
From within the Media Center application, add a dummy digital channel (add an extra KCPT sub-channel, for instance). Doing so will force MCE to reload the xml file you just edited.
Verify that the guide no longer lists any ATSC channels for KMBC.
From within the MCE application, add the missing digital KMBC channels. Major channel 9, minor channel 1, physical channel 29. Call it "KMBC-DT" so the correct guide listings get pulled from the internet.
Then you can also add 9.2 .... Major channel 9, minor channel 2, physical channel 29. Call it "KMBC-DT2" ... without the quotes, of course.
After it's all over you can remove whatever dummy channel you added above.
I have Windows Media Center Edition 2005, and this has worked well for me with KMBC as well as a Raleigh, NC station that was out of whack when I used to live there. Hopefully, it works well for you.

I had the CableCards installed on Monday, and I picked up the Tuning Adapters from the Cable Store on Tuesday (surprisingly seamless installation / activation). The only HD channels I wasn't picking up (besides HBO/Cinemax/Showtime/TMC/Starz and NHL Network HD) were 1501, 1506, 1507, and 1508. Anyone have any further insight on MLB Extra Innings and being able to watch it using TiVo Series 3 / CableCard / Tuning Adapter?

According to The Star all of KC's analogs are slated to go off at 9:00am tomorrow for the execption of KMBC who will nightlight for a month. KSMO's tower will move to KCTV's site once their analog tower has been taken down by the end of July. Also anyone who may be having reception issues will be happy to hear that most stations will be increasing the power on their signals and will result in a 300,000 viewer net gain in some fringe areas.

Kind of a general prediction, since you don't say WHEN after 9 AM on 06/12 these particular events will occur. As far as right after 9 AM - all of the channels you predict will be removed still appear on the program grid - and I went two weeks in advance on the program grid to check. But I enjoy checking your predictions, since these are so frequently wrong.

Hey folks, I don't know where Barnhart got this tidbit from, but there is not one thing true (regarding KCTV/KSMO) except that KCTV's tower is on 31st street. This is 100% fabrication. So much for trusting the Star as your news source. The part about KMBC serving at the "nightlight" is true.

Well, it's 9:02 AM - 97 is still there, 68 (MetroSports) is still there, CMT is still there - and no KMCI HD. BTW - he's referencing Comcast's cable lineup.
WDAF's signoff was cool, kind of a ending where it all began if you will by showing the indian head test card with national anthem. Did any other stations go off with any fanfare or was it pretty much business as usual?
dlnester 06-12-09, 10:37 AM That is pretty cool about FOX 4. Here are the behind-the-scenes photos: http://www.fox4kc.com/wdaf-dtv-day-061209,0,4159069.photogallery
KCPT says in July they are getting a new Million Watt Digital Transmitter and will reconfigure their antenna.
From KCPT.ORG:
After the analog signals are turned off, KCPT will be able to reconfigure the existing digital transmitter for a slight increase in power. However, we are very excited to announce that KCPT is in the process of installing a new million-watt transmitter, which is scheduled for completion by mid-July. In the meantime, if you are experiencing reception problems, it may help point your antenna toward our tower at I-435 and 23rd Street in Independence.
mgsports 06-12-09, 11:02 AM Okay what I said will probley happen after all the Analog Channels except Local are moved to the Digital Side,Sports Tier to the 700 Hundred's and so on is moved.
Do you have Antenna because KMCI is a local channel and is to stay on Analog side?
If your TV doesn't have a Digital Box you need to rescan it Comcast Olathe people because I just did and noticed that 56 CMT and 68 Metro Sports,97 KCPT are gone so that could mean one thing more Channels coming soon on the Digital Side you hope. There are not gone on TV's that has a Box and don't know when.
Rescan: This is one of the most important elements of the digital transition because some stations have changed DTV channel assignments. Of particular note is the impending launch of KQFX-LD, the local Fox affiliate that starting Sunday will be on DTV Channel 22, the former home of KMIZ-DT, which has moved to DTV Channel 17. You’ll need to rescan your digital receiver to find all the new digital channel assignments.
In fact, the FCC suggests rescanning your digital receiver twice — once to ensure the old channels have been released from memory and a second time to ensure they find all the new over-the-air signals.
dlnester 06-12-09, 11:21 AM Apparently SureWest didn't get the memo that KMCI-DT was moving...

KC-Technerd 06-19-09, 12:45 PM I've discussed this a bit before, but I think it's time to bring it up again. I'm having difficulties receiving Channel 5 (Physical Channel 24) in Liberty. I'm having the same issue on 3 different receivers, two of which share an antenna, and one that uses an independent antenna. I originally thought the issue was in some way related to interference from an analog broadcast, but of course those are shut down now.
I'm receiving strong signals on all other channels in the area. Only one of my three receivers is able to maintain a lock on Channel 5. This is what I'm getting for signal levels (out of 100).

Yes. Shortly after the change over I stopped receiving Channel 5. I live just SE of Smithville. Channel 5 was one of my best signals prior to the switch. I have tried rescanning. I guess I'll have to move that antenna out of the attic after all!

41 is the new physical channel for 38. However it should map to 38.1 on your Sony. I had a little difficulty myself getting 38 to add correctly using "Add Digital Channels". Assuming your menu works the same as my Sony, I would recommend doing another "Auto Program" and see if that corrects the issue. You'll probably need to go to "Show/Hide Channels" afterwards and hide a few extraneous channels that are picked up.

Ah. The "Add Digital Channels" is how I found it on 41.3 in the first place. (38.1 shows as zero signal strength for me.) I'll try the Auto Program again later today. And hide 16.1-16.5 again....
Not a big deal, since I really only watch OTA when it's something on the broadcast networks that is worthy of the better OTA PQ. The US Open fits that criteria, although all the rain and clouds in NY kills the usually pretty golf course picture.
KC-Technerd 06-20-09, 05:52 PM On the newer Sonys, it seems that "Add Digital Channels" works for adding brand new channels, but "Auto Program" is the way to rescan for channels that change their physical broadcast channel, like 38 did.

Sounds like a multipath issue to me. I do know that KCTV's digital antenna is currently side-mounted on the south side of the tower, which may cause some issues to the north and northeast. I believe I remember seeing that they have plans to move it to the top of the tower, now that the analog is off.
I was at a friend's house in Basehor Saturday night, and he is having problems with channel 9 since they moved to 29 digital, also. It's one of my rock-solid channels; in fact, I had WAY more issues with channel 9 when they were on VHF.
Brad
KC-Technerd 06-22-09, 12:17 PM I never had issues with 9, other than getting a better signal when they were on VHF 7. That's probably because 7 was set up for a better signal to the north. Even with the 65 signal strength, its solidly locked. Even so, I'd love to have all the channels above 90.
I've had issues with 5 on 24 ever since I've had digital TV reception. It's the only channel that I've had any constant issues with maintaining a lock on. The multipath issue makes sense. The one receiver that I am able to get a solid lock on channel 5 with is supposed to be the newest and most capable of rejecting multipath.

It would be great if Fox 4 would go HD. I can no longer stand to listen to Larry Moore. I've tried KSHB, and they aren't bad, video is great, especially with HD in the field as well as studio, but somthing just doesn't click. So, I end up watching Fox 4 half the time anyway.

It's a little over 1/4 of Fox4's programming for the day (four hours in the morning, 1/2 hour at noon, 1 1/2 hours in the early evening, and 1 1/2 hours at night). I would doubt that they'll drop part or all of that ad revenue for syndicated shows.

Best thing for you to do call and ask when are they moving the Sports Tier to the 7 hundred's,Digital Sub Channels end of the 2 Hundred's,123 so Oxygen can be moved there,125 and 126 to open more space for HD Channels,adding KMCI HD,like maybe Metro Weather and so on SD/HD we don't have yet and deleting 97/Analog Channels of CMT and Metro Sports and so on when they move them to the Digital Side Interactive TV.

Is this still going on? I'm trying to set up an OTA system for 2 TVs we don't use much. We do have another 5 on Directv. Yesterday and today, I get no signal period on 38, but the satellite has it. At 10 last night, I'm getting like 70% signal strength. Are they shifting the signal to another transmitter during the day, then back at night or something?

I don't know if they're done or not. I was home sick last week, and they made an announcement on the morning news that they would be working on the transmitter "this week" (last week). I'm not seeing the dropouts on KSHB anymore that were pretty routine in the past, so I assume they're done with the KSHB portion of the project. There might be some addional KMCI work going on during the day.

Anyway, does anyone know when KCTV5 will be removing their old analog stick and moving their digital stick up to the top?
This is the only channel that my parents are having minor problems with and I was planning on waiting for KCTV5 to do this before I fiddle with their antenna system.

Welcome back, Timmy!
KCTV has a construction permit active to raise the digital antenna to 2001 feet above MSL, which is the top of the tower. I haven't heard what the plans are timing-wise; maybe Dog-of-Madness will let us know. ;)

Yes. It would be nice to know what they have planned. There seems to be something creating a shadow in KCTV's signal over Liberty, because KCTV is the only station I have a reception issue with, and it's consistent between 3 receivers and 2 antennas. I've heard that others in the area also have reception issues with KCTV.

It's not just Liberty's side of town. I live in Lenexa and installed a preamp in the attic to overcome KCTV's poor signal.
Farlaugh 08-11-09, 10:35 AM Hey All,
I was recently laid off so am looking to shed some bills and found one of those giant aerial antennas in my attic; the old style that looks like it was made with an erector set and aluminum tubes. Will this old beast work for HDTV? I have a Samsung 1080P DLP and have always had cable so I have never researched the antennae idea. I do not believe my set has a built in tuner, it is the Sammy HLS5687 and I live in KC North in an old neighborhood with lots of tall tree's. I can't even get Direct TV because of the trees. Thought I would ask what I need to make the antennae work or if it even will. Thanks in advance for your time and guidance.

According to CNET, your TV does have an ATSC digital tuner, so you are all set. Depending on how old the antenna is, it might have old 300-ohm "twinlead" cable running downstairs. If it does, you will need to install a 300/75 ohm matching transformer ("balun") on the antenna and run RG-6 coaxial cable down to your TV. The balun is very cheap at WalMart, Radio Shack, etc. Once you get the cable run, you need to do a channel scan on your Sammy. If you don't get all the local channels, you may need to tweak the aim on the antenna. You MAY have trouble with KCTV (see above posts), as their digital antenna is currently side-mounted on the south side of their tower, and reception to the north is sometimes problematic. Good luck with this, AND your job search! :)

Anyone else had any trouble recieving KSHB 41.1 and 41.2 OTA today? I am using a Sony KDL-46WL140 and a roof mounted probably 7 year old Antennacraft(I think thats the right brand) VHF/UHF Antenna.
First noticed it this afternoon when I returned home around 3pm. The signal comes and goes but most of the time this afternoon/evening it has been out. This is the only channel that is not coming in. And I am located in Shawnee.

KSHB/KMCI 08-13-09, 09:25 AM The issues everyone has been experiencing is related to replacing antennas. We removed 3 antennas from the tower (channel 36, channel 38, and a channel 41) We moved both 41/42 to the lowest antenna while the crew replaces and moves the two top mounts. We will combine both KSHB and KMCI into the top mount and use the two side mounts as backups. The new top-mount was set Wednesday afternoon (attached picture) If everything goes well, we will migrate to it by Friday afternoon.
Thanks for everyone's patience as we make these changes to improve the signal strength and reliability for KSHB/KMCI

The Dog is on vacation, but the info you have requested I can fill in for you.
The signal problem is well documented by now along with a great deal of mis-information. Currently, there is an engineering evaluation underway to determine what can or cannot be done on the tower. Before anything can be done, the tower must pass a structural feasibility study. Then the antenna must be ordered, constructed and installed. There are many issues with a tower as old as this one, as well as other hurdles to overcome due to the design of this type of tower. The fact is, on a self-supporting tower the sloping faces cause may work issues for tower crews. Add that to the location in a heavily populated area and the problems pile up and cause delays. Currently the biggest issue with the entire project is getting it funded. Another issue to deal with - with any CP component added to the antenna pattern, will require more power than the 2 current transmitters can supply. So adding a third or perhaps fourth cabinet will complicate and delay completion, not to mention cost. All things considered, I would not look for improved signals until perhaps next spring.
On a bright note, all of the pre-season Chiefs games except one will be HD. I think the Jayhawk games (on KSMO) will be HD, too. :D
Thanks both for the news from our local broadcasters.

It was horrible. Far better than last year's telecasts, but why the heck did they mix SD and HD cameras? That made no sense. The main action camera, from the side of the field appeared to be in SD, while the other cameras appeared to be in HD.

CosmoNut 08-18-09, 03:26 PM Of all the cameras to have SD, why would you pick the primary play camera? I don't care if I see close-ups of players in HD. I would like to see the PLAY in HD, though. Odd.
I think the main camera lined up on the 20> yard line was in SD. The other two cameras at the 50 and the <20 yard line were HD. But, leave it to KCTV and MetroSports to do something halfway - pinching pennies anyway they can.
BTW - does anyone know if the game on Friday night will be in HD? If they can get their feed from the Vikings network (which will definitely be in HD as NFL Network was hyping that they'll show the replay of the game at 10 PM Friday night), then it shouldn't be an issue.

There were a couple that I wasn't sure about as I only saw some infomercials (2am). There was also a channel called "THIS" that I hadn't heard of before and didn't appear to be on Surewest's channel lineup.
Hope this helps someone else. If you find out what those two channels are let me know.

This TV is a digital tv network jointly owned by MGM and Weigel Broadcasting. Their flagship is WCIU in Chicago. They play a lot of retro shows and films from the MGM vault, pre-1986. In KC, it is KCWE's subchannel 29.2.

If the above is true then it's - 10 days too late (the regular season starts Sep. 13) and - supposed to be in HD. NFL RedZone was added to Comcast as part of their agreement with NFL Network, otherwise, it would have been only available for DirecTV subscribers. Now, this channel is being made available to cable customers too.
Anyone getting clipped audio tonight ?

It didn't sound right to me, too. Almost sounded like really poor compression. There was a little bit of a slap-back sound in parts, too. Not good.
roostacaster 09-01-09, 11:10 PM I might be late to the party here, but is anyone else having issues with KCPT-2 OTA being stretched out? My aspect is set fine on my TV (Set to Full on a Panasonic) and it always clips the image off of the sides like it is set to zoom. No other channel has this problem, so I would assume it is a problem with the broadcast. Any ideas? Anyone know the engineers at kcpt to ask this question?
dlnester 09-01-09, 11:16 PM KCPT 2 (19.2) sometimes shows programming that originally aired on PBS HD, and they center-cut it for 4x3.

Time Warner adds more HDs and virtual DVR service
Time Warner Cable has been telling customers it will be expanding its HD lineup until it reaches the magic number of 100. However, the following news will probably not fall on happy ears among the growing legion of “Mad Men” fans. Here are the channels being put on TWC’s HD grid ... on October 1st:
* AMC HD
* E! HD
* TCM HD
* WGN HD
* QVC HD
* HLN HD
* G4 HD
Better late than never, I guess, although I’m not sure I ever need to see home shopping in hi-def.
Moving on, here's what gets added November 1st:
* Style HD
* Weather HD
* C & I HD
* TV One
* MSNBC HD
* WE HD
* IFC HD
* Fuse HD
Also, in yet another effort to entice people to get a set-top box, Time Warner has rolled out its Start Over feature, which, quoting the literature,
lets viewers restart programs already in progress up to 59 minutes after they’ve begun. When a Start Over enabled show is turned on while in progress, an on-screen prompt pops up offering the option of restarting the program from its beginning. Simply pressing the SELECT button on the remote control immediately restarts the show.
Since I'm using a TiVo instead of TWC equipment, I can't test this feature. But I am assuming that this allows the viewer to also fast-forward through the show ... and its commercials, right? Or is there a trade-off going on here -- watch the network's ads, get a free time-shift? Someone check it out and let me know
Cosmos2 09-07-09, 10:00 AM KCPT 2 will never again broadcast in HD, even if the main channel is SD and the bandwidth is theoretically available. It's a real waste.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but when using start over feature you are not allowed to fast forward through commercials. I guess that would make it too great and TWC won't let that happen.
On a side note, does anyone know if KC will get the new 320gb Samsung STB's anytime soon?

No - A few changes yet again, and now they are gone!!

hathawaynson 09-19-09, 07:53 PM I have an converter box and also an 32 inch television with tuner, the converter box does well with receiving 4-1, 5-1 and so on.
However, on a slighter note on the 32 inch, I do get 5-1, (24-1) and 9-1 and 9-2 (29-1 and .2 via psip more specifically but I can't receive 62-1 or 31-1(29-1 and 29-2) on the 32 inch at all especially when rescanning for channels.
I live in a apartment that has bricks in it, do I need an indoor amplified antenna on the 32 inch or one on the converter box? any advice???
I had to re-do my Mythtv machine and just re-scanned my QAM channels. I can't find WDAF. Either Time Warner is encrypting or they moved it and I can't find it. Anyone around here getting WDAF on TW over unencrypted QAM? The silicon dust site says it should be at 93.12. Only things on 93 are two encrypted channels.
I also only see one PBS, but I am not as concerned about that.

In broadcast television HD really only refers to the highest quality of digital broadcasting. All full power TV stations in this country now broadcast digitally, but not all programming is broadcast in High definition. If you have a digital tier with your cable company and a TV that can recieve full HD signals you should be able to see the programs that are broadcast in HD. If you have neither of these you cable company most likely does some processing on their end that doesn't allow the full HD signal to pass through their equipment.
The KMCI programs that are currently broadcast in HD are: King of Queens, Dr. OZ, Legend of the seeker, Lost, and the Saturday run of Stargate Atlantis.
KSBugeater 09-22-09, 11:49 AM Hathaway, I assume the converter box is on a different TV than the 32", otherwise why would you need a converter box if the TV has its own ATSC (digital) tuner?
The antenna you need (and which direction to point it) is dependent on where the towers are from you. You might try www.tvfool.org and enter your address, then post the reception summary (minus the address) on here so we can help you.

jedimastergrant 09-26-09, 09:58 AM Hi, I am moving to Olathe and since they don't offer TWC I guess I will be switching. It looks like the only options are Comcast or Uverse. I have heard that Uverse is inferior to Comcast. I am also considering going with Direct* which I have heard is superior to Comcast for picture quality.
I was wondering if anyone can substantiate these claims since the quality can vary so much depending on where you are. We will be near k/7 k10 in Cedar Creek (near Desoto).
I am looking for the best picture quality. Any suggestions?
mgsports 09-26-09, 05:52 PM Comcast doesn't offer KMCI HD or other yet like ShopNBC and so on but does offer NFL red Zone is SD and not HD yet.

jedimastergrant 09-26-09, 06:17 PM Surewest? I have never heard of them. Where do they rank in picture quality?
Thanks for the info on KMCI HD. Any idea when or if it will be added?

I'm building in SouthGlen at Cedar Creek right now (moving in near Thanksgiving). I'm very interested to know which service you decide to go with, and why. I had Direct* (but no HD programming) in our previous home on the other side of Olathe, but I hated their receivers, and they screwed up my bill when we canceled, so I'm definitely not giving them any more business. Plus we get big ol' rainstorms that wash out the signal (unlike with Comcast or UVerse or Surewest).
I'm looking for best bang for the buck, as opposed to absolute best picture quality.

Time Warner Cable Monthly Programming Notification - OCT 1, 2009
I am writing in our ongoing efforts to keep you apprised of developments affecting the cable television system serving your community.
Time Warner Cable’s agreements with programmers to carry their services routinely expire from time to time. Only in rare circumstances are we unable to renew or extend these agreements. For legal reasons, we are required to inform you that negotiations are currently being held with the following programmers:
The following service additions are planned and will not be accessible on CableCARD-equipped Unidirectional Digital Cable products purchased at retail without additional, two-way capable equipment: Style HD, Weather Channel HD, Crime & Investigation HD, MSNBC HD, WE HD, IFC HD, Fuse HD, TV One.
In addition the following channel changes will occur: G4 will move from ch 216 to 221; BIO will move from ch 217 to 222; BIO HD will move from ch. 1217 to 1222; History International will move from ch 218 to 223. For up-to-date listings of our packages and channels, visit our website at www.timewarnercable.com.
It is our intention to keep you informed of programming changes on an ongoing basis. To that end we have created a page on our cable system website http://www.timewarnercable.com/KansasCity which provides customers with constant updated information.
Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at (816) 222-5001 or email me at Dan.Wright@twcable.com.
Sincerely,
Dan Wright, Group VP of Operations
jedimastergrant 09-27-09, 08:56 AM How often did the reduction in signal quality occur? I would also like to know from anyone else who has had direct* what their experience has been like for signal quality. With TWC I had some outages and some instances of intermittent picture but it wasn't anything to steer me away from them.
Mr. Pseudonym 09-27-09, 06:16 PM Thanks for the input. I do appreciate it.
Anyone else with specific experience using Windows Media Center to receive clear QAM channels as it specifically relates to a Surewest (Everest) network and subscription?
I have Surewest basic cable in Shawnee and use Windows 7 Media Center and a Hauppauge 2250 tuner. I think it works great but it would be nice if they'd quit re-arranging the channels! :rolleyes:
When I initially set it up and scanned for channels it only found 1-99 range and no clear QAM. Then I went into the settings for the guide and check marked the clear QAM channels, renaming and editing the listings as I went. Works like a dream. Not the biggest HD lineup around but you can't beat it for the price.
How often did the reduction in signal quality occur?
Only during the heaviest of rainstorms. The kind where, if you were in your car, you would be using the "high" speed for your windshield wipers. When it's really bad, you lose the signal entirely, and get the dreaded blue screen saying "acquiring satellite signal." Sometimes we would still have a picture, but it would stutter and pixelate when the rain got in the way. When the weather was clear, we had a very strong signal on the signal strength meter, so the loss of signal during a rainstorm wasn't due to imprecise aiming of the dish.
I think I'm just ready to try cable again, and get the bundled Internet service and VOIP home phone service. I was an AT&T customer for home phone service and DSL (and they jacked up my final bill as well!), and had Direct* separately.
KSBugeater 09-29-09, 10:29 AM jedi, I've never had HD cable, but DirecTV's quality and choice of programming are excellent. If your dish is aimed correctly, weather outages occur only during the heaviest of storms, less than 10x per year and only for a few minutes at a time. For redundancy, you could set up an antenna and still receive digital local channels even when the SAT is obscured. That would also allow you to get the subchannels D* doesn't carry, like 9-2, 19-2, 19-3, 29-2, 41-2, and all of the subs for 16 and 50.
hathawaynson 09-29-09, 10:21 PM Hathaway, I assume the converter box is on a different TV than the 32", otherwise why would you need a converter box if the TV has its own ATSC (digital) tuner?

Lawrence is in the Kansas City DMA even though you can get most Topeka Stations Stronger. I can get most KC stations though pretty well 4,5,9,19,29. 38,41,50,62 are hard to get in but hopefully after 38, 41 upgrade though I would be able to get them better but nope. It's all about how you aim your antenna and what type you have. I have an amplified antenna and helps alot!

You would do well with an amplified antenna for both the converter box and the 32". There may be differences in the topography between your last location and your current one, such as tall buildings or hills in the line of sight, or interference from other electrical devices. Radio Shack or Wal-Mart or others will allow you to return the antenna if you're not satisfied. Also, 11 and 13 went from being UHF like the KC stations to VHF (needing rabbit ears) in the digital transition. I'm not sure how that lines up time-wise with your move.
Lawrence is a good place to be for TV signal variety, IF you're not in a hole. Keep trying and good luck.

I can get most KC stations though pretty well 4,5,9,19,29. 38,41,50,62 are hard to get in but hopefully after 38, 41 upgrade though I would be able to get them better but nope. It's all about how you aim your antenna and what type you have. I have an amplified antenna and helps alot!
it seems to make sense after realizing the 32 inch tv that I had 4,5,9,16,19,29,38,41,50,62 when I was living at an previous address that I got those channels at 100% percent without an amplified antenna. now its 40 or 50% signal. what amplified antenna do you recommend, because I have a radioshack amplified antenna and I used it on the 32 inch and it picked up most of the channels.
about the converter box, I have the converter box hooked to a Sanyo 19 inch television and it gets all of the Kansas City channels fine (with re adjustment done to it recently) I had to moved the antenna away from the television and converter box about 12 inches when the converter box more recently.
any recommendations for an amplified antenna on a 32 inch TV
KSBugeater 10-01-09, 11:17 AM I'd get one with both a loop and rabbit ears, if you want to get Topeka stations 11 and 13. Make sure it's amplified (can plug in power) and adjustable amplification would be great. I have a Radio Shack programmable antenna that looks like a charcoal USS Enterprise that works pretty well... it would allow you to change the focus from KC to Topeka with the press of a remote button, but it's pretty pricey (over $50).

As of 12:20 PM, Ch. 182 is still not active. What a bunch of f***ing liars (not you mg, but Comcast). When I called to find out what was going on, they couldn't find my account to check if I had the Sports and Entertainment package (which I do) and to see if 182 and 266 were supposed to be active. You'd think after being a customer of theirs for 16 yesrs that they'd have my info in their system.
KSBugeater 10-06-09, 01:02 PM Did anyone else have reception problems in the middle of the Chiefs game Sunday? WDAF DT 4.1 went to SD and my reception got worse, then improved when they went back to HD. It also screwed up my DVR recording of the game and caused me to miss the 4th quarter (the only good one for the Chiefs).
mgsports 10-06-09, 06:35 PM 182 is back and is tells us what it is called know so one more HD Channel in the HD Channel Listing.
Lots of Comcast are doing World of More but ours doesn't want to yet so what gives.

It is probably a "Solar outage" issue. Twice a year, the sun passes behind the satelites in the Clark belt above the earth. It causes the signal to fade for about 5 to 10 min. Sometime the networks will provide backup feeds of programs, but I guess it can get expensive for all the games from 12 to 3 on a sunday afternoon.

Actually it is the "Clarke" belt, as in Arthur C. Clarke the science fiction author. He published a paper in 1945 in which he envisioned that someday "rocket stations" as "Extra-Terrestrial Relays" could provide "worldwide radio coverage". So the geo-stationary orbit location of 22,236 miles above the equator is sometimes know as the "Clarke Belt" to honor this vision. And since the sun crosses the equator at the Autumnal and Vernal equinox each year, at about noon (standard time, not daylight saving time) the receiving satellite dish is looking directly at the sun whose enormous energy overwhelms the relatively small energy from the satellite. As stated, the phenomena only lasts for a very few minutes.
The networks always provide a second path that has the same program as the main path, although apparently not all networks provide HD on both paths. CBS for one always provides nothing but HD, all the SD paths have been turned off.
Class dismissed, thanks
KSBugeater 10-09-09, 12:26 PM Thank you. Although, I don't think this was that. I think something hit WDAF's transmitter, which is a terrestrial signal. Since I time-shifted the game, I had no way to know exactly, but it appeared that my OTA tuner in my DVR lost 4-1 for some time or was certainly having more difficulty. That's why I posed the question, thinking someone on this board was also watching the Chiefs Sunday. If network FOX was having an issue as you surmise, there probably would have been a "Technical Difficulties" rolling message from WDAF.

Time Warner Cable Programming Notification - OCT 9, 2009
I am writing in our ongoing efforts to keep you apprised of developments affecting the cable television system serving your community.
Time Warner Cable’s agreements with programmers to carry their services routinely expire from time to time. Only in rare circumstances are we unable to renew or extend these agreements. For legal reasons, we are required to inform you that negotiations are currently being held with the following programmers:
At Time Warner Cable, from time to time we make certain changes in the services we offer and the following changes are planned: On or after November 9th, G4 moves from ch. 216 to ch. 239; Biography from ch. 217 to ch. 237, History International from ch. 218 to ch. 238. In addition, the following service addition is planned on or after November 28th: Metro Sports 2 to be added on channel 222 and will not be accessible on CableCARD-equipped Unidirectional Digital Cable products purchased at retail without additional, two-way capable equipment.
It is our intention to keep you informed of programming changes on an ongoing basis. To that end we have created a page on our cable system website http://www.timewarnercable.com/KansasCity which provides customers with constant updated information.

Well actually there are many shows on KCTV not aired in HD. The vast majority of HD content is provided live via CBS. The chosen few non-CBS fed programs to air in HD are those that can be tape delayed and prepped for air easily. The R&K feed at 8am central time is not tape delayed since there is simply not enough time to rewind and prep the tape for air in 90 seconds.

Well actually I was watching, and it was indeed a routine "sun outage" as previously described. They lost the signal, switched to an SD backup, and restored the HD feed when it again became available. The was no loss of the OTA signal at all. Your DVR must have had a different issue. I watch only OTA, I don't have any other TV sources.

fredo888 10-23-09, 12:19 AM Hi all,
I just joined this forum, hope I can ask a question of the locals....we just started up HD service via Comcast three weeks ago or so here in Lee's Summit. I've done a search of this thread, but couldn't find an answer.....I have two of the latest Motorola DCX3200 boxes for HD.
WDAF-Fox is on 234. I do not get this channel, instead, I get the "this station will be available shortly" message. What gives? We wanted to watch the Angels-Yankees game tonight in HD and there was no service, had to watch it in SD (ugh) on Channel 6. Is this a known problem? All of the other HD channels that Comcast offers, we seem to get those no problem (though I haven't checked EVERY single one yet). All of the other KC local channels are on their HD station just fine.
I called the Comcast "tech support" number and did the unplug, reboot, send new signal game. No change in availability.
I have read in other posts that WDAF does not do HD broadcasting of local programming, but the ball game is a national Fox feed. And after the game, for the local news, the station 234 is still out, I would think it would at least broadcast in SD instead of being totally off-the-air.
So is this a Comcast service problem? I'd like to know before calling out a technician.
Thanks for your response in advance!
mgsports 10-23-09, 01:18 PM Yes the Game was showing in HD at English Gardens at S. Darnell Street in Olathe but was going back in forth and forth. The other's you could have choosed from have more HD then Comcast at the moment.
Good evening all,
I'm thinking of purchasing an HDHomeRun (digital dual-tuner) and was wondering if I can get unencrypted QAM from the coax cable that is currently connected to my PC (dual NTSC tuner). Using the HDHomeRun you can either use it for OTA or for unencrypted QAM.
Since I live in an apartment I was thinking the QAM would be the better choice, but I'm unsure if I will/can receive those channels.
In the home theater we're using a SA 8300HDC if that makes a difference. I would *think* we could get the QAM channels from the cable that is currently connected to the NTSC tuner in our PC, but just wanted to make sure.
Cable provider - TWC
Thanks in advance,
Skid

Your going to get pretty much the locals/OTA channels. If you can look at surewest. You can pick up all basic HD tv channels via QAM.

DurhamHusker 10-28-09, 03:19 PM Surewest folks -
I'm continuing to think over a move from TWC to Surewest to take advantage of the availability of clear QAM channels that aren't switched (like TWC's SDV). My question is this: What is the basic subscription level needed to get clear digital QAM channels (including the HD Tier channels) into my home and can I do it w/o a set top box?
Thanks in advance,
Jon

Well I just took my box and returned it. Only stations I dont get via Clear QAM is:
Golf HD
CNN HD
TNT HD
TBS HD
Its sucks I cant get these stations w/o a box but these are not worth $5/mo to me. TNT and TBS are hardly HD, Golf dont watch but CNN would be nice.
I wish a Surewest Employee would say why i cant get these. Calling their support number leads me to a typical idiot that doesn't understand the diff between analog and digital.

I pull in the clear QAM HD's though my Hauppage card (no big screen yet). I don't get ESPNU and Fox Business though my basic package, so getting them free through clear Qam is nice. I attached a pic of what I pull in. "This", the PBS 2 &3, weather, and music stations aren't labeled. I'm not familier with TW on the QAM front, but I thought they had a better regular HD package at some point. I guess it depends on what's important to you. I'm still miffed at TW because they gouged me before Everest rolled into my neighborhood.
I scanned Surewest/Everest and I can't find http://bigowen.com/qam.JPG

tmservo 11-10-09, 09:01 AM Well, I did a test this morning trying to sort something out for my tuner.. I have Surewest, but only the cable modem (internet) as I subscribe to DirectTV.. sure enough, my HVR-1850 picked up 96 QAM channels, and while I didn't take time to identify all, I know ABC-Fam, Disney, DisneyXD, ESPN, Bravo etc. were in the mix, from what I flipped through.
Good find, considering I pay $0 for cable services.
hathawaynson 11-14-09, 08:42 PM question for anyone: is KCTV5 (5-2) still getting .2 network by chance, because I am not seen it when I did a rescan with my 32' television set and there is no 5-2 and its past october 1st, is engineering responsible for this subchannel launch or not???

MadSpleen85 11-18-09, 04:38 PM Anyone else missing some KC channels lately OTA? Here in Shawnee, KS KMBC-TV 9.1, 9.2 and KCWE-TV 29.1, 29.2 do not come in. All the neighbors have cable and all still have these channels. I have rescanned our Digital-Tuner TVs and the ones that have converter boxes with no luck. Have checked our chimney mounted antenna, have not climbed up there with it because of the weather, and there is zero damage. Everything appears straight and the entire thing has not moved. Any help would be great.
KSBugeater 11-20-09, 11:36 AM Spleen, I have two theories about your loss of the Hearst-Argyle stations:
1. You were benefitting from tropo ducting during the warmer season. Signals travel better in warm, humid air. I have a set-top antenna that can pick up KC stations 60+ miles away in the summer, but don't bother in the winter. You are much closer than I, though, and you have an aerial antenna, so this shouldn't be as big a factor, which leads me to the other, better explanation...
2. Some tree or trees that were hiding some multipath have lost their foliage, meaning a secondary signal that bounces off of a building or a water tower is now confusing your tuner with a second, delayed signal. ATSC (digital) signals are more susceptible to multipath than analog, which would have just shown a ghost image. You might need to switch to a more directional antenna...? Being in Shawnee, all of the signals are generally east of you.
tmservo 11-20-09, 09:41 PM Maybe spoke too soon.. tonight I'm not pulling in anything on QAM.. totally dead.. (regular TV shows, but QAM on Surewest dead like doornail ;(

I have noticed the digital tier channels are rendering color different. Less saturated, more accurate it seems. At least on our non-DVR HD box that is the case. So, maybe big things under the hood? No new channels from what I can tell.
