Atlienzz, you can find where and how far the towers are from you at www.tvfool.com. When you say HDTV ready, that is what they called early hd tv's that did not have digital tuners. I still have two of them. For those you need a stand alone or digital tuner built into a recorder. These have componenet outputs. All newer tv's have digital tuners and will say 'ATSC tuner' in the specs. You will get hd with just an antenna connected to the RF/tuner input.

It costs a lot less to simulcast the news on KSMO at noon than to pay for an expensive syndicated show that competes with your newscast.

Does anyone have a list, or know of a list, that would tell me what the twc 77.x QAM channels match to ota channels? And are they limited to the 77.x range, or are there more channels at other places on the tuner range? I'm piping through twc cable to a QAM capable tv, and I can tune those channels, but those do not show in my tv schedule listings, or in the literature from twc.

Wrong forum ... but ...

A paid subscription to Xbox Live Gold is required in order to gain access to the ESPN application. The subscription will also enable streaming of Netflix content to your TV through your Xbox. Time Warner Cable has nothing to do with ESPN3 via Xbox other than if they happen to be your ISP providing the internet connection. And they ARE listed as a partner that provides the service.

Thank God.

I was worried that I had an issue with my audio receiver as I only anecdotally remembered it occurring while watching CBS programming. Whew.

I stopped coming around due to not working for Crapca- I mean Comcast anymore. I've been a happy (service-wise) Uverse customer for a year and a half. (A non-employee for 5 years or so now.)

Do we have any KCTV engineer types poking around here at all?

It's sounding like somebody is having an issue with their Dolby encoder. I don't watch KCTV for local news, so I don't know if it happens then or not.

The reason why KCWE HD is on 802 in Olathe is because 813 is taken by HSN HD but because KMCI is on 2 then 802 should before KMCI HD and and like 811 for KCWE HD.

I said that KSHB and MYKSMOTV. We also have 800/801/807/811 available and Digital Sub channels aren't moving. I guess one is for maybe Metro Sports in HD and maybe if KMBC adds ABC Live Well HD and maybe KUKC adds a HD channel and KMCI HD.
We need somebody from MO who has Comcast to post their Lineup from 100 and above.
They would have to move every HD Channels from 814 and up so they could put KCWE HD on 813.
I have contacted both MYKSMOTV and KSHB about the problem so they can let Comcast know but haven't got response back yet.
I would let Comcast know but they would just tell to get a new Box when I said like 873/124 missing,97 still showing and so on. Olathe's Lineup is out of date.

It seems audio problems are contagious. The past 2 nights I have heard micro drop-outs, for lack of better description, with ch 9/ABC network programming. These are sometimes accompanied by clicks and pops. This has been both OTA and TWC/QAM. It was so annoying at times during 'V', I lost track of the story line.
A few years ago, before many cable HD programs were scrambled, I was surprised at how trouble free the audio was on these, while local broadcasters seemed to be plagued with problems. Maybe that shows who has the money, equipment and people.

Hello all,
I will address the multiple postings regarding KCTV audio issues of late rather than each poster individually. The problem has been known to us (KCTV engineering) for some time now, but tracking down the exact source of the problem is not an exact science. Digital encoding paths are complex and sometimes confusing even to those of us to who build and maintain the system. As you may know, we have been "hubbed" for some months now. Our primary program source (including the CBS network) is now being originated from the Meredith Hub facilities in Atlanta, via a DS-3 fiber connection. You may have noticed the audio issue is only during 5.1 audio material, primarily from CBS. I don't know of any syndicators providing 5.1 audio at this time. It is primarily the center channel that will lose lock and distort audio for a short period of time while it re-syncs the clock. This cycle of loss repeats about every 12 minuets or so.
Anyway, all that to say we believe that problem has been narrowed down to decoding the incoming digital program stream from Atlanta. We have a new set of decoders in place, and plan to place them online sometime next week after testing and burn-in time. The reason this problem is not heard during stereo programming is due to stereo being sent on different pairs than the 5.1 center channel.
As to the other encoding issues mentioned, these are also known and being addressed. The pixalization during fast motion will hopefully be fixed by some upgraded MPEG-2 encoding software. Meanwhile the older encoding path is being used so we can maintain higher quality video.
The ever increasing number of new technologies and associated hardware present technical staffs at all TV facilities with challenges to not only stay current, but present unique challenges for trouble-shooting sometimes very obscure issues that manage to stay well hidden. This is due in part to some facilities not yet having the latest test gear for troubleshooting these new kinds of problems and in some cases the test gear does not even exist!
The engineering staffs at all the stations appreciate having viewers like this group who take the time to discuss these issues. It puts many more eyes and ears in the field to help us verify where and when the problems happen, and if what we observe ourselves is in fact real.
Thanks to all.

Honestly, I don't recall seeing anything in the way of habitual pixelation and what-not.

I'm curious, though. Did you get your Uverse installed with Coax (if so, existing or new) or Cat5? We had our's installed when ATT was still providing an option between the two (we went with Cat5). Our service has been rock-solid for right at 2 years now.

02-23-11, 10:45 AM
I've got AT&T u-Verse in Overland Park. I generally like the service, but I've been extremely disappointed by the poor HD picture quality. It's not as good as Surewest, which is what I had before. Either its the IPTV or the fact that u-Verse wants to allow so many HD streams at once, but they way overcompress the streams. 5-6mbps is Ok for slow scense, but PQ goes to hell when there's a lot of motion, like watching sports. Anything in the background like the field, crowd, etc. gets all blocky. I called the tech out and he told me there was nothing he could do - it's just a result of the compression.

I've been thinking about switching back to Surewest. A CSR told me Surewest is getting whole home DVR "this summer." Surewest's Sacramento market already has this, and they use the same Motorola VIP1216 with Microsoft Mediacenter as u-Verse!

Thus, I'm assuming Surewest plans to start offering IPTV in the KC area, just like Sacramento. I have no idea if they're just going to force that over the current fiber/copper hybrid network, or its going to require FTTH.

I'm hoping this means Surewest may soon be able offer the KC area the same great DVR as u-Verse at maybe a better price, with maybe better HD PQ! I just hope that in converting to IPTV, Surewest doesn't further compress its HD streams the way u-Verse did.

Any of you know anything more about this?

dlnester
02-23-11, 12:36 PM
The SureWest technician told me KC would not be getting the IPTV solution like Sacramento anytime soon since most houses are wired up with the older copper system.

That's strange. I thought WHDVR only worked with IPTV, but maybe not. I guess the upshot of Surewest not going to to IPTV is maybe they won't further compress the HD streams. The downside is I really like u-Verse's Motorola VIP1216 and the MS Mediacenter interface.

When I had Surewest, the interface on the Scientific Atlanta was CLUNKY. Good HD PQ, crappy DVR (with not much storage space, either). Do you know the exact model of the boxes Surewest will use for WHDVR?

It still is a very clunky interface...

tvoldtimer
02-24-11, 08:02 AM
I noticed several comments about HD compression via various providers; cable, dish, Uverse, etc. While I won't pretend to know who gives the best re-processed signals to customers, I do know that OTA is the only way to view even half decent HD content. Native uncompressed 1080i video has a bit rate of about 1.5Gbps. CBS distributes it's HD content to affiliates via satellite at a bit rate of 45Mbps. The affiliate in turn has to re-encode that signal into the ATSC wrapper which maxes out at a shade over 19.3Mbps. Therefore a single channel OTA provider sends out an HD program at a maximum of 18.5Mbps since some overhead is required for other information to be transmitted. Stations that provide multiple programs must further reduce the size of each individual stream since all programs added together cannot exceed 18.5Mbps
So for cable, etc. TV providers to cram everything they wish to provide to their customers, they must further compress signals that are already compressed at least 500:1 (for 1080i) and somewhat less for 720p. Fox uses a system that doesn't require the affiliate to decode and re-encode the stream. To insert local commercials they "splice" the stream, but that presents other problems. For example, there is no way to super over the program for stuff like wx alerts and school closing info.
Bottom line, the only way to enjoy the best in HD possible is via antenna or to purchase blu-ray movies.

shadow2k

The Explorer 8652 has more internal memory, and responds quicker. The underlying SARA software is the same. However, the actual interface is going to look different. How much different, I don't know yet. I have not had the chance to play around with it yet.

When we lost power not too long ago, I finally completely lost the channel grid, which means I have to manually change the channel by typing in 19.1 etc, or the channel up/down buttons.

I have one as well (on permanent loan to my sister) Did you do the upgrade to the .21 firmware? (Spiff's Space (http://www.spiffspace.com/forum/index.php?board=2.0) has the details on that) I upgraded mine around the time of the final DTV transition. Other than the usual quirkyness of the the device she hasn't had any issues with data being received.

Also, you could probably get more help here:Sony DHG-HDD250/500: Official Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=537711)

Yes, the games will be in HD so on KMCI Comcast customers won't get to see it in HD because they don't offer it in HD yet KMCI.
Their won't be any March madness overflow Channels anymore.

I just was on Surewest Live Chat and asked about ESPN 3 (so you can watch games online, like todays KU vs. OSU basketball game). They said there were no plans to add ESPN3. I also asked about TruTV in HD, and that is also a no go. Then I asked about whole house DVR and they said in July/August timeframe. If enough people bug Surewest about getting ESPN 3 and TruTV HD, in a couple years maybe they will add it, so that in the future we will have access (like TWC/ComCast/AT&T Uverse/and about everyone else).

ESPN3 is on the web. It's ESPN.go.com. You probably have to have a high speed internet connection to get it. But, you can try and see what you get.

My TruTV on u-Verse looks like... any other other HD sports programming on u-Verse: like an internet feed, maybe a little worse. Any motion makes the players look fuzzy. How's it look on Surewest / TWC, or is it even there yet?

I just officially placed the order to head back to Surewest. I'm getting all the cable channels and HD I want, HBO, 2 HD DVRs, 8mbps internet, and unlimited local/long distance telephone with caller ID for just $125 a month (including taxes and fees) for a solid year. Way cheaper than u-Verse, and I'm finally gonna get some good quality HD again!

Plus, the 2 HD-DVRs can sort of be used as a whole-home DVR solution (if I record the same shows on each box), and I'll get a total of 4 tuners without sacrificing video quality.

Independence, MO —

Comcast has rolled out a new service designed to compete with the likes of Geek Squad, and Eastern Jackson County is among the areas getting a first peek.

Xfinity Signature Support was launched earlier this month. The company is offering help with problems with laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, smart phones and other devices – whether Comcast’s or someone else’s. The reason is simple: People have more and more electronic gadgets around the house.

“With that comes complexity,” said Mitch Bowling, senior vice president and general manager for new businesses. “Consumers are challenged every day in what’s becoming the digital home.”

The company will help out either with flat fees or for $19.95 a month. The service is one customers have requested for years, Bowling said. The company points to survey findings that most people with Internet service look to their broadband provider for technical help with home computer problems and that most people want a single provider for technical support services.

“The vast majority of these are configuration or education issues,” Bowling said.

Xfinity Signature Support was launched in Independence, Blue Springs and Olathe as well as the Twin Cities in Minnesota, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Atlanta. “Our plan is to be nationwide by mid-year,” Bowling said.

How did the TWC switch go for you all? I have say I am peeved at both Time Warner and Tivo. Time Warner for pulling this mid-week while TV shows are still in first run. Tivo, for not being more proactive about the change. Tivo's excuse is they use Tribune Media Services for their listings (Zap2It) and those haven't been updated. I think I would be less irritated had this occurred in mid-June between the end of the Spring Series finales and the start of Summer series. Sorry needed to vent.

I realize the the new line-up makes more sense (just add a 1 to any channel number for HD), and I honestly don't understand why this wasn't done years ago. Oh well, at least we get a few more channels next month.

I'll admit, I used to love the weather channels from KMBC and KSHB, but now that our Vizio TV has weather widgets built into it I don't find those channels as necessary. If they did anything, I'd love to have to have a simple channel with a large radar loop, current conditions and the 36-hour forecast.

When KSHB begins airing the Live Well network soon, it appears Live Well will reside on PSIP 41.3, with the weather subchannel remaining on 41.2. KMBC recently dropped their weather subchannel in favor of Me TV. It should be noted some TVs are equipped to handle weather applications, making a weather loop unnecessary. We just need to find what Channel number its going to be on Comcast and so on.
Good to see Surewest adding those channels fast but Comcast needs to add KMCI HD.
Channel 4 - WDAF M-F 10:00 AM Anderson Cooper show
In addition, from time to time we make certain changes in the services that we offer. TWCable How To On Demand will be added; TV Shows On Demand will be dropped.
A Comcast user who watches KMCI can you please check tomorrow at Noon to see if the Newscast is on their is new if Yes might find out if Comcast is adding the Channel in HD Soon because KMCI has new Schedule starting tomorrow.
We have Teen Nick in the testing environment right now and expect it to launch within the next two weeks-Surewest.

38.2 has been live since about Sept. 1 although the the LiveWell content apparently didn't show up right away.

Overall it seems to be a waste of bandwitdth, mostly paid programming/infomercials.

The PSIP guide showed up along with the subchannel a few days before that. PSIP listings only go out 24 hours but looks like they are filling in the blanks with more paid programming. The 720P* looks pretty raggy on 38.2 (with any motion at all) but most of the LiveWell "demo loops" seem to be pretty static. We are lucky this isn't eating into an important channel like it is most places, but fortunately it doesn't seem to be hurting the 1080i content on 38.1. At least not that I can see so far. LiveWell 720P* looks a bit like really bad Uverse HD or the old DirecTV mpeg2 HDlite, way overcompressed and jaggy with any motion. Kind of too bad it really has to be there (as opposed to something more usefull) but overall the K.C. market has good affiliates with *somewhat limited* *quality* subchannels compared to many other places. So count our blessings and all those extra full "sister channels" for now. :)

I'm just glad to see KCTV back to full power after several weeks not knowing what they were doing. I was beginning to fear we lost 5.1 over here in Topeka, but ever since that Chiefs game everthing seems to be back to normal. KCTV is usually (and now again) one of the strongest KC signals for Topeka.

Doh... that explains why it looks so nasty.

(sorry Uverse HD for the slam.. it may look slightly better than this)

For some reason my Pal DVR was set on 720P and was converting everything. It is my only device with 38.2 (auto) scanned in, and it will surely remain so. No reason to rescan for this. :)

And 38.1 is still 1080i but the HD syndication seems to be relatively new. It may actually prove useful.

Well What I need to know is what is the location of This KC on Time Warner's QAM lineup....I can't find it anymore. If this means I get a OTA antenna for the DT sub channels fine. I have a way I can view them and still watch the basic cable channels. So if anybody knows where This KC went that would be helpful. I notice Me-TV is back, but WGN and TBS have gone encrypted,

83.6 is encrypted...was that This KC once?... Says KCWEDT on the HD Homreun channel list. Also 96.27 and 96.41 does not come in now. 86.3 was TBS and 92.9 was WGN. I unfortunately refreshed the QAM channels over win tv software. With 96.27 and 96.41 the channels just don't appear on the scan list. The others says encrypted now. On the flat screen the channels are all missing as well. Me-TV was gone all day til I did a rescan tonight then it was back, but This KC is still gone.

Also as a side note the HD Homerun channel list is not as good now. Used to have a still of the channels image. Now it don't. Might have to do with not being able to have a current picture.

P.S. Just in case you need my location...well I am out here in Overland Park, but the QAM lineup was the same throughout the Metro on Time Warner.

Bounce TV is know TBA 2012 and The Cool TV and others are waiting game.

Well the first part of your statement seems false to me as this was posted on 9/23/2011:

Bounce TV went live on KSMO 62.2 at 11AM this morning. At this time it is strictly pass-through, no local insertions of any kind, other than EAS.

I'm not trying to be a pain, but I've had no problem watching it on 62.2 ;-) As to Cool TV, are you saying no further info has been released on whether or not KC will get it?

I downgraded my TWC/KCMO from standard to basic. I didn't have first hand knowledge on what that would mean for the clear qam channels received with the standard tier. The short version is I don't have 38.1 HD, 38.2 and 29.2 SD and a couple of cable SD channels, but have the rest of the local and cable HD, SD channels that were available with standard cable.
I have a signal level meter with spectrum mode, which shows a snapshot of the entire lineup. With basic, channels 24 to 76 are notched out, with the rest of the channels above and below that intact. The clear channels I don't get now were on channels 71 to 73. Not too bad for a considerable price change.

I knew TW had installed a video trap on my drop but I was curious if any channels would still come up. To my surprise, when I checked last weekend all local channels come through on QAM except 38.1, 38.2, and 29.2. All analog channels are blocked.

That said, I have a TiVo so this really doesn't do me much good except for watching directly through the TV as TiVo Premieres won't even scan the cable input without a cable card installed. My Antenna reception is rock solid so I don't see that I would ever watch the QAM channels, but I figured I would pass it along.

I went in to my local TW office to see what they were charging for the Basic tier and it was $24 a month with a cable card ($21.99 + $2) compared to $34 a month ($31.99 + $2) for the full standard tier. Sorry but paying almost $30 a month when you include taxes and regulatory fees for the same channels I get over OTA seems excessive.

dbdoc, did you get a better deal?

dbdoc
01-26-12, 11:15 AM
Our basic is about the same as yours, but std is an additional $44. They gave me a decent offer for digital with HD box, but it is still a lot.
There are a couple of cable channels I want on basic. And I like using the cable feed for recording, even though I watch mostly OTA for live viewing. Being in an area (Brookside) that has towers in multiple directions, it can get more complicated coming up with stable OTA signals for recording one thing while watching another.

LukeSkiewalker
01-26-12, 11:32 AM
I hate to say it, but as a Johnson County brat I'm not really familiar with where boroughs such as Brookside are so I had to look it up. ;) Anyway, I could see where dealing with a 55 degree arc could be a pain when you are only 4-9 miles away from the towers versus the 9-15 miles I am.

Out of curiosity have you tried anything like this: http://www.channelmasterstore.com/Digital_HDTV_Outdoor_TV_Antenna_p/cm-3000a.htm

I have been aware of the newer antenna technologies. I have done well much of the time using indoor antennas, although I had a directional on a rotator in the attic of my last residence (south waldo) that I used for a couple of rooms. I definitely don't need the 20db gain of the cm. In fact, since moving to brookside last fall, I have retired one amplified indoor and modified another to bypass the amp. Omnis, like the cm, don't do as well in high multipath areas, which is definitely me. Since you can't eval reception by looking at the picture like you could analogue, I got my pro SLM. Seeing the waveforms and numbers has been an eye opener for what you can get by with or not. If I ever decide I don't want to watch any cable channels and ditch cable, I will get serious about OTA reception. Until then, I will continue to dabble, as I have since I started watching OTA HD in 2003.

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably take your advice and give KSHB a call and see what's up. The HD feed has been available for a few years now so it's strange they haven't added it yet.

It is all about money. Comcast has to pay KMCI to carry the HD signal, and KMCI gets to set the price. I'm sure at contract negotiation time that Comcast thinks KMCI costs too much, and since they're not a network affiliate, they are not willing to pay as much as they are for say KSHB.

SureWest has only recently added KSMO HD to their lineup. SureWest is a great company by the way. I had them for awhile before I moved and they're not available yet where I live.

I have a Media Center PC with an OTA antenna, which is how I was watching KMCI HD.

Just thought I would do a preemptive post here before someone actually asks the question. KCTV will not have any dot 2's or anything like that to carry additional games. Since CBS made the new deal with the NCAA, they share much of the early round coverage with TBS, TNT and TruTV. The only (nearly) local area team carried OTA (in the early rounds) will be Wichita State on Thursday. Viewers who don't care for this arrangement and wish to express thoughts may share them with CBS at 212-975-4321. You will be directed to the CBS "fan phones", which I assume are message boxes, but who knows, maybe actual people will answer them.

Hello dbdoc,
I would like to know what device you refer to as a "pro SLM", my assumption is "Signal Level Meter" but that doesn't tell me much. You make a reference to waveforms, is this perhaps some type of spectrum analyzer? I have in fact used a spectrum analyzer, but I didn't have any type of calibrated antenna, so the levels are just relative to each other. The waveforms do point out rather dramatically that in most cases amplification is not only not necessary, but in fact detrimental to receiving good ATSC signals. In my first pic are shown the carriers of 18, 21,24,29,31 and half of 34. The next pic is 34, 41-42, 45, 47 and an analog carrier. The last pic shows 41-42, 45, 47 and 51. As you can see, reflections add to and subtract from the carriers. Notice 34 is about 50% stronger than others, likely due to reflections. Each "haystack" should be flat and undistorted, but in fact are rounded due to reflections. Notice 47 is barely above noise, yet I get a good lock on that station. While 51 is strong and well above the noise floor, I tend to get dropouts due to cancellations from reflections. You can see that adding gain would just make the problem worse. By the way, the antenna was a Clearstream2, using 20db of attenuation into the analyzer. The antenna is located just off Johnson Drive and Foster on the west side of a hill with no line of site to any transmitters.

I know the whole point of carrying some games on TruTV is to get cable systems to carry that network and promote their shows to people who don't normally watch "that crap", but it sure would be nice if they would allow CBS affiliates to simulcast the TruTV games on subchannels, much in the way that ESPN allows local ABC affils to broadcast Monday Night Football when a local team is playing. Airing both K-State and KU on a network you couldn't pay me to watch (and isn't included in my DirecTV budget package) is a drag and a penalty to folks here in Kansas, and a major disservice to the CBS affils in Topeka, KC, and Wichita.

dbdoc

I use a Sadelco 800 at home and a refurbished Sencore 1476 at work. These newer pro signal level meters have spectrum modes as well as measuring levels in dbmv or dbuv as well as other parameters. They are set up to work with the 6MHz video signals and have limited use for other type signals. You have to set them up so that they measure the signal correctly depending on whether the signal is digital or analogue. I have not had the budget for a true spectrum analyzer, but these specialized SLMs fit the bill. Knowing that a digital tv tuner generally wants to see a signal between +15 and -15dbmv, I am able to see quickly if I am in that window. Both units have a bar scan mode for seeing the entire spectrum, each signal being a verticle bar, especially useful for cable systems. Both also have a spectrum mode, the 800 scans a single carrier while the Sencore has adjustable bandwidth and is real time. Expanding to show a single carrier, if the slope or notch is more than 10 db deep there will more than likely be trouble, although that is a greatly oversimplified explanation. A flat signal sufficiently over the noise threshold will lock.

Got this mailing as well. I am guessing it is related to the digital conversion that happened a few years ago, and that if you didn't get the converter box to receive the basic channels (which you could still receive with the lifeline package), you will now need to get the box. If Comcast's plans are to move the HD channels to the 1000 tier (that is, HD channels would become the SD channel number + 1000 - KMCI SD is channel 2, HD would become channel 1002), they will need the expanded bandwidth to accommodate the additional HD channels. So the analog channels now on the lifeline package will become digital. This is just a guess.
