I live in the Chicago loop. Has anyone received the new HD channels that were promised for November 18th, such as the extra Starz channels and ESPNnews HD? My channel doesn't even show the new channels yet.

I now get the 3 additional Starz HD channels as well as This TV on channel 246.

Channel 599 and the corresponding clear QAM channel (in my area, 54-8) are now showing WOCK's Caribevision feed instead of the still card that Azteca America (which WOCK used to carry and was on 599) is now on 598.

Azteca America is also available through clear QAM (54-11 in my area), which makes sense, because we get it OTA on WLFM and WCHU, which used to carry MTV Tr3s but now have Azteca America.

Looks like new HD channels up here in Waukegan today. I'm at my office w/o an HDTV, but they are there listed on the cable box here. Maybe someone can verify that they're on.

266 CNBC HD
278 Bravo HD
279 Fuse HD
280 IFC HD
281 WE HD
282 QVC HD

Not really the ones I was looking for, but good that they've added more HD.

Also, 183 renamed The U, 246 now THIS, was showing WCIUT yesterday.

These haven't shown up in Schaumburg yet, but I'm fairly certain they'll appear in the next day or so. I think we lagged by a day during one of the previous updates.

My bedroom TV does not use a cable box. I have the output of my Comcast DVR in the living room connected to a channel modulator, and merge it with the Comcast feed so I can watch it in the bedroom. I also have a remote repeater so I can control the cable box.

I was using channel 134 for the modulator and had no problems, as Comcast had no signal there. A few days ago, that remote signal to the TV got very grainy, but disappeared if I disconnected the cable feed but left the modulator connected. That tells me there was some digital signal up there. I tried 133, 132, and 131, and still had noise (the highest frequency currently used for TV is 130 according to the cable box and TV's QAM tuner.) The TV goes to 135, but setting the modulator to that gives me severe interference on the picture even before the latest problem.

Does anybody know if they may be using the higher frequencies for something else? Possibly DOCSIS 3, which is supposed to have 1GHz tuners? This is in the Schaumburg area.

I ended up moving the modulator to channel 80, which is in the middle of a 79-82 clear block, so far. The modulator causes interference on adjacent channels, so I can't put it next to a frequency I want to watch otherwise. I used to use a 600MHz Low-pass filter with my old non-digital TV, but that blocks clear-QAM channels, which go up to 123. The highest I've seen are 750MHz, which blocks 122+.

I just noticed that BOTH 6 (SD) and 183 (HD) now say 'The U'. This is BAD. It will trigger a bug on DVR's that causes series recordings to revert to the lower channel number. They need to change the name of one of them.

I have been searching this thread and the web looking for a list of available clear QAM channel in Chicago, Northwest 2-3 region with no luck, just random refrences to specific channels here and there. So if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

I am using a PC QAM tuner card and it's detecting 79.1-12, 80.13-23 in the clear but not much else. Previousley I was getting C-Span 1 & 2 (82.201, 82.202), and MSNBC (83.5) but not anymore. I did a rescan and hunted through all the channels with no luck. I am a huge C-Span junkie anyone know where they went?

Also, are they not broadcasting anything 1080i in the clear?

Thanks.

Is it normal for CBS HD to have occasional audio drop outs and pixelation? My signal levels seem to be ok. Just wondering if it's unique to me. I'm in the Wheeling area.

It is the only station that causes me trouble with either pixelation or audio dropout. I have Comcast but I don't know if it is a CBS or Comcast issue.

So if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. The list changes too often and is of too narrow use (since it is different everywhere else).I am using a PC QAM tuner card and it's detecting 79.1-12, 80.13-23 in the clear but not much else. Previously I was getting C-Span 1 & 2 (82.201, 82.202), and MSNBC (83.5) but not anymore. I did a rescan and hunted through all the channels with no luck.Check your signal strength and make sure you have fairly sturdy coax and not too much splitting; my experience has been that the 80-x and 82-x ranges are the first to go.Also, are they not broadcasting anything 1080i in the clear?2-1, 5-1, and 9-1 should be in 1080i.

I'll do a rescan and see what happens.  Lately I don't watch anything through QAM; our TVs with digital tuners are usually connected to antennas for ATSC.

When new HD channels show up, do you also get a Message telling you about it, or do you have to constantly check the menu to see if new channels have been added?

I'm in Northbrook and have been checking every couple of days since the new channels hit Downtown, but if I know that there will be a Message when they add them here, I can at least stop doing that.

(Plus, it would be nice to get a Message I actually care about, not for some boxing pay-per-view.)

They are pushing the system. CNBC/Bravo/QVC are on 843MHz (132). On tuner 2, Bravo was breaking up, although SNR is just over 33 and reads good. I also got an occasional INVALID, so there may be noise issues.

On my LCD TV's built-in tuner, there appear to be two more sets of triples on 133 and 134. That means they are pushing the system to 855MHz+. This explains why my channel modulator was having problems until I changed the channel it was using.

Fuse/IFC/WE are on 807MHz (126). The SD's that used to be there are now on 543MHz (77, which was unused.).

For people who like to make predictions, when do you think that every channel in the lineup will be in HD (not just digital but true HD).

In 3 to 5 years will we likely still have to deal with flipping stations and seeing some of the stations being stretched SD? Also at the that point do you think all programs and commericals on HD channels will be HD?

Is it still cheaper to film in SD or is it just as the stations phase out their regular cameras and have only HD cameras?

Obviously this is just speculation but it is fun to think about that wonderful day.

I just wish they came out with a cable box that knows when a channel is in HD, so even if you tune to the SD channel, it sends the HD version. It's confusing to people like my parents who are used to 2, 5, 7, 9, etc...

So far, this latest batch of HD's in the 'burbs is a bust for me. I basically have no interest in any of them. I'd like Speed, but I don't have the sports package, so don't get the SpeedSD anyways. I'm not paying extra for what is only one channel in that package I would watch.

Not too much more. Here in Schaumburg, they appear to be testing 6 more HD's up at the limit of the system on channels 134 and 135. There are some unused channels here (3, 65, 79-82, 91-92, 96-97, 121, 127-128), although it's also possible they are used for non-TV stuff or have other issues that prevent them from being used.

Nice to see some new HD channels in the burbs even if they are not the 6 I would have picked. Now if only we could get comcast to group their channels better. I would settle for all the HD with no random SD in between but imagine a world were the ESPNs are all next to each other and the movie channels are all together. Oh and lose the channels that are mapped to multiple channel numbers like the foxsports I dont need to see them twice

Over the weekend, I heard a radio add for HDTV with Comcast where they made the claim that you could plug the cable directly into the HDTV and received full HD service "without the need for a separate cable box".

Huh? I thought to get HD service from comcast required a comcast STB or an M-Card in a compatible STB.

Am I mistaken or was the ad misleading?

I know there are a couple of members here that are associated with CBS. There seems to be a nationwide problem with CBS transmission of TVGOS data. Can you give us some insight as to what has been happening for the last two weeks?

You can check over in the Sony DVR forum. It's not just lack of data, but BAD data that randomly reboots the DVR's, causing a whole assortment of problems.

I was previously able to get TVGOS data via Comcast CBS-HD 189, as well as CBS OTA analog 2. Neither one works now.

Thanks.

I'm inside the city, renting a Motorola DCH3416 from Comcast, running version 74.53 of the firmware.

So far ever since both 26 and 183 were renamed to The U, I've been trying to trigger the bug, whereby if two channels have the same mnemonic, the Motorola DVR's will record a series episode from the lower-numbered channel regardless of which was selected by the user.

But I've been unable to reproduce it.  Both individual programs and series on channel 183 record channel 183 without slipping to 26.

Was the bug fixed?  Or am I going about it wrong?

andyross63
12-03-08, 04:55 PM
The bug mainly affected series recordings, not single ones. It's possible it was fixed, although I've seen posts by people having that issue even with current software.

It's possible it may take a few days or so before it occurs. Or maybe the channel names are a bit different, even though they look the same to us.

Further testing with my Sony HDD500 DVR reveals that OTA CBS-HD 2.1 is indeed sending digital TVGOS data. But Comcast CBS-HD 189 stopped passing the data about two weeks ago. I don't know if this is intentional or if they have an equipment problem. It's going to be difficult to find out...

The bug mainly affected series recordings, not single ones.Yes, so that's why I've been trying it with both. It's possible it may take a few days or so before it occurs.A few days starting when?  If you mean from the installation of the box, I've had this box since summer.  If you mean a few days from the entry of the series recording, no, I haven't let one run that long yet, so maybe it will still happen.  I'll try again.Or maybe the channel names are a bit different, even though they look the same to us.That's possible also.  Channel 595's mnemonic includes a capital Ñ and channel 635's has a lower-case í, so if some non-ASCII characters are available, perhaps the hard space is among them, and one of the two channels is The<soft-space>U while the other is The<hard-space>U.  That would be a silly choice on Comcast's part (or on Weigel's if it was at their insistence) to pick two names that look identical to viewers, but it would prevent the bug.

vj9999
12-04-08, 08:54 AM
Also.. ESPNews HD on 231, Lifetime Movie Network HD - 229 and Planet Green HD on 261.

Talk about pushing/maxing out the system. These are on 849 and 855 MHz (133 and 134).

All these channels are breaking up heavily for me, but that's a local Bartlett hub issue. To give Comcast credit, I emailed ther national customer care center ('We_Can_Help@cable.comcast.com') on tuesday afternoon about the same issue on Bravo, QVC and CNBC. They emailed me back on Wednesday morning saying they will forward it to somebody in Chicago area and to expect an update by the end of the day. Around 2pm somebody from executive customer care called me, said he is contacting his technical team to look into the issue and that he will personally call me today to give me an update. Couple of hours later Bravo HD, QVC HD and CNBC HD started working.

Edit: 5 minutes after this post all new HD channels started coming in fine without any breakups.

Do most of you guys have your Motorola boxes set to 1080i or 720p assuming you have a 1080p tv? I hate that there isn't a native output. I have mine set to 1080i, yet I still feel the 720p stations look better than the 1080i ones. I'm debating switching it to 720p but I don't know if that is wise since most of the stations are broadcast in 1080i.

Like many others, I programmed the otherwise unused Help button on the remote with the code (00109) to change the output resolution, and I switch it between 720p and 1080i according to the resolution of the channel, so that my 1680x1050 television will be the only device doing any rescaling and the video won't be rescaled twice if the station's resolution doesn't match the current setting of the box.  That's why I asked FSugino for the additional column, and I thank him for adding it, though I wonder where he got the information for stations that are not yet available.

Have Style, G4, and TV One shown up on Chicago systems today?

Style HD is on 287, but with no mnemonic and no schedule: just half-hours of "To Be Announced."  However, if you tune in, you see upconversions of Style SD (which we get on channel 84 here in Chicago Area 2).  Channel 287 does not show up in the HD listings either.

G4 is on 288 as G4HD, and everything looks OK there.

TVOne HD is on 289 but its mnemonic is TVONE, same as that for TVOne SD on channel 172.  It shouldn't have taxed their creativity too much to think of calling it TV1HD instead, but apparently it does.  The schedule shows nothing in true HD, just upconversions.

All three are in 1080i.

Not showing on mine as of now.

The new channels were expected only in Chicago today.  That's why FSugino asked if they'd shown up "on Chicago systems."  That's why he even had to ask.

As of this afternoon, Style HD has guide information and is listed as "STYLE."  That makes three channels whose SD and HD deliveries share a mnemonic: The U, STYLE, and TVONE.  But I've been unable to replicate the bug that that's supposed to trigger.

DOCSIS 3 is a new format that allows modems to bind multiple channels together for faster speeds. The current DOCSIS 1.1 typically used has a limit of 38Mbit down and 9 up (this is shared by all users on your node.) In upgraded areas, DOCSIS 2 is being used with older modems that support it, allowing up to 27M up. DOCSIS 3 allows up to 152M (4 channel) or 300M (8 channel) down, and 108M up.

You cannot upgrade a DOCSIS 1 or 2 modem to 3, as it has to support multiple tuners.

Hi,

I am in Buffalo Grove. I think that I am off the Rolling Meadows head end. I have a TivoHD with an M series (multi-stream) cable card. Based upon the chart it appears that I should get 278-285. Is that correct? I don't get any of those channels. I have digitial bronze + sports package. Is a call to comcast in order here? (Once they got the Cable cards working with TivoHD, I've been reluctant to change anything.)

Someone from Palatine was complaining about the lack of new channels. I think you two may share the same headend, and they may not have the new channels active yet.

The data for the service levels comes straight from Comcast's web site. I just checked and AMC and HGTV are listed as available under Digital Starter.

I have noticed some frequency changes since Comcast added the 12 new HD channels in my area and the Chicago suburbs.

Old ---- New
#197 Disney 723Mhz. ---- 225Mhz.
#198 ABC Family 723Mhz. ---- 225Mhz.
#212 Science 723Mhz. ---- 225Mhz.

#173 ESPN 705Mhz. ---- 219Mhz.
#200 Comcast sports 705Mhz. ---- 219Mhz.

Does anyone know why Comcast might have changed these frequencys?

Does anyone know why Comcast might have changed these frequencys?

Well, a couple of guesses - we're due for more HD channels, so this may be a bit of housekeeping. The other guess is we're also about to get DOCSIS 3.0 deployed on the data side, so Comcast may have to move things about to get enough frequencies cleared for the higher speeds.

My Sony TV has a diagnostics screen that displays the frequency for each channel. As far as the higher frequency giving you a better
picture I would not know. Maybe someone else can answer that.

The frequency is just like the frequencies on a radio. If anything, higher frequencies tend to have more problems as the strength degrades faster than lower frequencies as it travels down the cable.

For a Motorola cable box:
If you have a DVR, turn it off, then back on so you know you are starting with tuner 1.
Tune to the channel you want to check.
Turn the box off, then hit OK/Select within 2-3 seconds.
Scroll down to d11 - Inband Status and hit OK or right-arrow.
You will see the frequency.
Hit Power twice to turn off and then power back on as normal.

I just got an elgato eyetv hybrid with QAM, but the dang thing isn't picking up my local HD QAM channels like my TV does. it frustrates me to death, but my TV won't indicate frequencies, so I can't manually add them to my tuner.

has anyone experienced similar problems? i'm on highland park comcast (analog), and i'd love to see a table with all the channel - to - frequency mappings for QAM. is there any highland park user out there who's getting QAM channels and would like to share?

I'm really only interested in the HD locals (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, PBS), and those are the only ones the tuner WON'T pick up. (it finds the SD QAM channels on 28 & 29 fine)

VH1 HD
MTV HD
Nickelodeon HD
Spike HD
Comedy Central HD (Coming Jan '09)
ION HD (Q1 '09)

MSNBC (does this coming in HD?)

and all HBO's HD (Coming Jan '09)

The following mentioned are: MLB Network, Nickelodeon, Spike, Comedy Central, Lifetime, MTV, VH1, CMT, Travel Channel, Smithsonian, BET, Crime & Investigation Channel, ESPNU, HDNet, HDNet Movies, MSNBC, etc.

Speed/FoxNews/FX are on 471MHz (65). The signal is a bit poor, as I get FAIR SNR on tuner two of my DVR. Even tuner one is just barely over 33dB.

Hallmark/Encore/FoxBusiness are on 837MHz (131).

Still, personally, none of these are must haves. Encore is probably the only one I'd occasionally watch. FoxBusiness looks like the SD version shifted to the left side, with data on the right.

I sometimes have this problem, and I think it's a Comcast issue related to the way they compress their HD signals. I've never seen this happen during football games, though - only during normal primetime shows. I saw this happen a few times last night during NCIS.

I had the same issue. Probably a glitch somewhere. Check on the OTA forum (if you didn't already) to see if it was just a Comcast glitch.

dattier
12-17-08, 05:45 PM
I'm also having the WBBM issue, but when I can watch in realtime and get the OTA signal, the audio dropouts are even worse, so my inclination is to blame WBBM rather than Comcast.

Sometimes if I'm not recording anything else at the same time, I'll record both channel 2 and channel 189 on the DCH3416; channel 2's video may be SD and 4:3, but in these situations it has perfect audio.  If the audio dropout on channel 189 or OTA 2.1 is so serious that I want to know what I missed, I seek to the same position in the recording from cable channel 2 and hear it just fine.  (Usually the dropout isn't worth the effort of doing that, of course.)

HDNet on channel 291 was going in and out.  Apparently it is part of Digital Classic after all, and I am supposed to get it, but for much of last night (I have bouts of insomnia and, if there's something odd going on with TV reception, I'll check on it whenever I'm already awake anyway) it was behaving like a weak ATSC signal, with freezes and pixelation.  For a few minutes just before 8 AM it was actually replaced with a very clear SD feed of one of the HBO stations (which I'm not supposed to get).

Musicnutt
12-18-08, 05:59 PM
edrossy,

Thanks.....How is it working out?

Still 'fiddlin' with it. Too early to say with any definitive answers. The box appears to work ok but I've had a signal quality issue with Comcast since January so I'm still not overly impressed by Cable. Something tells me I'm 'at the far edge' from of one of their distribution centers, they haven't updated their hardware for all the HD they've been adding since every time they do that or upload a firmware update my PQ goes down the toilet for months at a time. When I call out a tech they'll fiddle with something, declare it fixed or blame it on a line problem that'll be fixed 'in a few days' which hasn't happened since January. They're great at 'going through the motions' but do nothing to actually fix it. They've been out over a dozen times since January and nothings changed for the better in any 'meaningful' way. I live in a 96 unit condo complex and since January I've seen more Comcast trucks in our parking lots since then than I'd seen in the previous five years combined. We actually had 5 trucks out here at the same time one day this fall. But that did little to nothing to decrease the number of Comcast visits our complex keeps having. IMO, its been nothing but smoke and mirrors accompanied by tons and tons of corporate propaganda excuses that have gone absolutely nowhere.

If I didn't live on the north side of a condo building I'd do a Donald Trump with Comcast and fire'em in a heartbeat and go dish for better PQ(signal quality). As it is tiling and audio dropouts (lasting 5-30 seconds) are every five minutes 'on a good day' and worse on others. But they're the 'only game in town' except OTA and the soon to come AT&T U-Verse in my area. I can't wait for that day so I can fire Comcast and never look back again. If they can't fix it in a year? They don't plan to or know how to.

When I finally got an HD OTA Tuner (which my previous HDTV didn't come with) it blew Comcast's signal away with 4 times better PQ from a 20 year old master antenna and RG59 cabling in our buildings. Hmmm? Why is that?

edrossy,

How do you like your Harmony? And which specific model? I've got an old 6-in-1 Cameleon (Radio Shack) but I've seriously considered updating to a Harmony. I've got 8 components I'd like to control and a few are H/K pieces which few remotes can seem to handle.

Harmony 550 is on clearance at bestbuy. Only $50.
It does everything the $200 model does.

I also have the following HD channels in the city of Chicago which are new:

Actually it is NHL in instead of NFL. If you subscribe to NHL Center Ice they will carry select games in HD on those channels. http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6492776.html

Hmmm. Very strange. I see the channel listed on my system in Chicago, but it lists as "Not Authorized". (I do sub to NHL Center Ice)

In asking a Comcast rep, I was told the following:

"Erin(Fri Dec 19 2008 17:59:03 GMT-0600 (Central Standard Time))>

I do apologize for any confusion with that. Channel 460 is to be a Spanish music channel not and HD channel for the NHL center ice."

I have a question for anyone in the city of Chicago that is all digital.
If you can check your frequencys, does Comcast still do a 3:1 mux
on HD channels? For example my area which is not all digital I have
Sci-fi, Discovery, and A&E all on 453Mhz. One would think that
since they have the bandwidth the would not have to do 3:1 mux.

b_scott
12-21-08, 01:54 PM
they still do, because they run a lot of info over that cable. you have to figure in Internet, and the SD mirror channels which take up a lot of bandwidth. I think the premium channels aren't 3:1 because HBO and Sho look markedly better.

Sorry if this has been asked before. I did do a little searching and didn't find anything or maybe my search query used improper terminology.

Anyway, here's my question:

Currently have Comcast Standard cable service - no STB.

When I see the listing for the available channels for the above service on Comcast's web site, I see for example WLS (ABC) channel 187.

Without a STB, I see on my HD TV channel 7, 7-1 (hi-def), 7-3, etc.

Is there some sort of conversion table from, again to use the above example: 187 to 7-1 ?

TIA,

Dave...

With the Standard Cable package, you'll only get a limited set of HD channels.

183 - WCIU-DT - 26.1
184 - WPWR-DT - 50.1

The only thing I can recommend is to search around for the "executive care" number. When I first got my TivoHD a little over a year ago I had a nightmare experience with cablecards and finally got help from the executive care people... or, try the comcast twitter .. Good luck. I hope for your sake they have gotten better with the cable cards in the last year. If you are lucky you will get someone who brings multiple M-cards... WHen (if?) they get a picture, do not let them leave until any premium channels you subscribe to are coming in. A "pairing" screen generally means they have things wrong in their system.

You might want to have a look over here at the comcast cablecard thread:

Has anybody else that's using a clear QAM tuner noticed that you can't see the On-Demand feeds on channels 89 and 90 anymore? They all seem to be squeezed into 87 and 88 only.

Is Comcast encrypting them on 89/90 now or did they just cut back to two channels for On-Demand?

I'm on IL0985 in Chicago Area 2. We used to get On Demand leakage on 67 through 69 and 87 through 90, but now it seems to come on 72 through 75 and 87 through 92 (not using all major channel numbers in the ranges). Since nobody's supposed to be tuning to it anyway, they're free to move it around as they please.

I have no engineering background and don't understand why VOD leakage happens or how it could be prevented, but it seems to me that Comcast could encrypt VOD and keep it from being viewed by other customers, so I'm surprised that VOD leakage occurs. But it is convenient for finding out the native resolution when you are watching a high-definition VOD selection: not all HD VOD is 1080i after all.

YEa, im not sure why when you hit clear it tunes though.. You may want to point to that question in the comcast cablecard thread. Someone there probably knows the answer.

What I ran into was that HBO and the HD stuff that wasnt part of basic would bring up that screen. They constantly want to roll a truck when (unless the card is bad) the problem is something in their system. It took me around 3-4 weeks to finally have a functioning Tivo.. ever since it has been rock solid.

I know this thread is supposed to be about cable, but I'm guessing a lot of people have Comcast phone and thought you guys may be able to help.

Our Comcast phone is constantly going down. It usually coincides with bad weather and start with us getting a lot of static on the line. Then it will seem to go down and be unavailable for anywhere from an hour to a day and a half this weekend.

When it is down I am still getting cable tv and internet. If I look at the cable modem every light flashes on and off except for line 1 which is solid. If I restart the cable modem the phone line will sometimes come back for about a minute or two before going bad again.

I am planning on calling tech support about this but I was wondering if other people are having problems or if it seems to be specific to my area.

Thanks a lot.

I'm in Schaumburg and had this exact problem this past weekend. CSR explained that it was a problem in my house. Long story short...through some rebooting of the modem, disconnecting and reconnecting, and all around juggling my phone lines all is working well again. I too have all three services from Comcast and at the time I was having troubles with my phone my Internet and Cable TV were fine.

Maybe the problem was in my house, maybe it was just a coincidence. For the time being, at least, all is well.

Strangely enough though, she did credit my account for 2 days of down service...I found that kind of odd when she told me the problem was on my end.

I'm sure this problem isn't (solely) on my end since it happens so frequently and there are many times that everything fixes itself without doing anything. I'm going to seek some credit to my account but the bigger issue for me is having a functional phone system. I'm debating switching the phone over to AT&T since I can't have my phone line going down once a week. My doorbell is also routed through the phone system so if my phone goes down I don't know that somebody is at the front door.

We just got Comcast phone on December 19 and it had no outage at all during the December 27 storms.

Even so, we had to take one line back to AT&T because Comcast Digital Voice wasn't compatible with our burglar alarm system.  But our other line is still with Comcast and it worked without trouble.

yea.. series 3 requires 2 s-cards (or 2 m-cards would work I guess like you said) and tivoHD will do 1 m-card.

I picked mine up (over a year ago) and basically asked the lady what I do with it, do I need to call a number or something. She looked at me and said something to the effect of, "honey I dont even know what that little thing is for".. and I knew I was in for a wild ride. But like said, once they got it going.. it has never caused a problem since.

It's possible if you're returning the HD box then you'll pay nothing different for the cablecard. Honestly, just talk to Comcast.

Did a scan with my with tv turner (which used to work), and while it picks up all the RF xxx-x stations as valid, they are all just black. I can't see anything digital.

I believe Chicago went all digital and, therefore, does not have to make room for analog channels and old technology.
