FRANK43 09-12-06, 05:21 PM From Bram Watkins at KDBC today.
Sorry Frank, I misunderstood. We are ordering a new HD server so that we can show Wheel and Jeopardy in HD. The bad news is that we probably won't have it in and installed until November. Have to watch my bottom line, but we will get it as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Bram

FRANK43 09-15-06, 04:16 PM From Ernie Hart at KTSM regarding SNF pixilation.
Hello Frank;
We have had some discussions with the NBC Engineering Staff in New
York, and based on their suggestions we made a few changes in the
bandwidth settings. We have not been able to see any results yet because
there has not been an HD program on with a lot of fast action since we
made the changes. We will watch it close this weekend to see what
happens. Thanks for your input.

c_hernandez32 09-19-06, 06:02 PM Does anyone get the CW yet. The premiere was supposed to be yesterday, but as of this morning there is no signal. A few days ago a logo was displayed, but nothing today. Anyone getting the CW?
blindcat7 09-20-06, 01:10 AM Is there anyone living south of Alamogordo getting the El Paso HD channels?
I live in Oro Vista, a bit south of the Oro Vista Fire Department, and just a little closer to the mountains. I hadn't considered that I might be able to get HD, SD OTA has never been any good because the mountain blocks the repeater from my house. People up the road got SD, but not us. Butt I noticed that there seem to be a good number of people in the area getting good signal, so thought I would look into it.
If it is possible, I would like to use an indoor antenna plus booster if that makes it doable, second choice would be an OTA antenna that would feed through my Dish Network dish, last would be a full outdoor antenna.
I really don't know much about getting this to work in the area, if the signal comes direct from El Paso, I should have an advantage since I am closer, but if it comes from a repeater on the mountain, I may be out of luck.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
FRANK43 09-20-06, 03:21 PM KVIA said on Monday that the deal didn't go through with Time Warner, what they have to do with CW tv OTA I don't know. They also said CW advised them not to broadcast OTA. A deal was done with Comcast in las cruces. So I guess they get CW and we don't. I e-mailed KVIA and CW network, see if I ever get a reply, if I do I'll post.
FRANK43 09-20-06, 03:24 PM I would try a good long range out door antenna and get it up as high as you can. You could always take it back if it doesn't work. with digital yu don't need a high signal strength you either get a pic or you don't.
FRANK43 09-22-06, 06:14 PM From KVIA
Thank you for watching ABC-7. It is thanks to viewers such as yourself that
we are able to maintain our position as the region's news leader.
We are still in negotiation to have CW aired. Your other questions have
been passed along to our technical staff.
Again, thanks for watching ABC-7

Comments from KVIA.com: What was all the hype about the CW network when
you didn't even have a deal in place to show it?
What does Time Warner cable have to do with preventing you from showing CW
Over The Air? I don't have cable or satalite but I do have a digital HD
system.
Are you ever going to show CW on 7.2? CW's web site still shows you as an
affiliate.
Also why don't you show "Good Morning America" in HD? The "Today show" on
NBC is in HD.
FRANK43 09-26-06, 04:26 PM Hi All,
Anyone notice the pixilating motion problem on KDBC during the Pitsburgh game Sunday? Same problem that KTSM has on SNF, Today Show and Jay Leno. All these problems are makeing HD a real pain in the mind and eyes. LOL
Recently got an HDTV and found out about OTA HD. Getting really good signals on all network channels and the NMSU PBS channels on the west side of LC with an indoor antenae from WalMart!!!
The Bronco game on Sunday Night Football looked really good to me without any problems here!!
Any updates on 7.2? I don;t get anything from them.
memikee 09-29-06, 04:26 PM Chris, Oro Vista should be no problem. In Alamogordo we get the signal straight from Ranger Peak in El Paso, no repeater.
fernando.lds 09-30-06, 11:55 AM So the PIXELATION has to do with the signal and not with the actual decoder??? i have noticed pixelation when figures move to rapidly on screen, oh and i also can't get 7.2, i was counting on watching Veronica Mars on the CW... dough!!!
KFOX HD has been off the air for the last couple of days. Anybody know what's up?
FRANK43 10-20-06, 03:11 PM HI,
Got this e-mail from KFOX yesterday.
I'll try to get you an official answer from someone, but just like last
year something's blown at the transmitter. I think it's called the
'exciter.' Our engineers were up on the mountain past midnight trying
to fix it.
The bad news is that we need a new part and won't have it here for
tonight's game. The good news is that our chief engineer tells me the
part is being shipped this afternoon and should be here tomorrow. So we
should be up and running by tomorrow evening and hopefully for sure by
Game 1 of the World Series.
I apologize for our continuing trouble in this area. I know we're
investigating how to prevent it from happening in the future.
Sincerely,
Dave Bennallack

Hey, Frank, thanks for the prompt update as usual.
But I think we have missed the first game on HD and looks like we will miss 2 as well.
Well I hope they fix it soon, they have the WS and NFL and it sure looks better on HD.
FRANK43 10-23-06, 03:31 PM Hi All,
As of 1:15 MST they are back on. I was starting to feel like this was going to be another KTSM feasco during the olympics, but even 3 days is to long to be off the air. Hope they get this stuff figured out before there is no analog to fall back on.
Any update on the CW? I can watch it in LoDef on Directv (a channel they pipe in from Baltimore).
FRANK43 10-26-06, 03:23 PM I e-mailed KVIA a couple of weeks ago asking why in the TV promo do they state that KVIA has franchise (forgot word) and they are negotiating with TW cable. I asked what does cable have to do with them broadcasting CW over the digital 7-2. As is typical with KVIA I have not gotten a response.
I haven't been able to get channels 4.1 and 4.2, for what seems like a week now. Anybody know what's up?
FRANK43 10-30-06, 04:39 PM No problems here in northeast el paso !
Hi,
I'm moving to Las Cruces in about 2 months. I'm welded to DirecTV (Sunday Ticket), so I don't want Comcast. Thus, the question: Can you get NBC and Fox Digital OTA in Las Cruces? CBS and ABC I can get on the Sat.

I live on the west side of LC and get great reception for ABC, NBC, FOX and PBS(University). I was getting great CBS until about a week ago when it disappeared.
This is good news!! What kind (and how big) is your antenna?
Mike
I have a 50 amp indoor Phillips that I bought at WalMart for $30. The key is it is in the east (southeast) facing window which is a clear line of sight to El Paso. When I tried on the west side of the house (signal would have to pass thru the house) I didn't get any signal.
The signals are southeast of LC, about 45 miles.
If you move to the east side of LC, I don't know if you have a line of sight to EP.

I live in NE Las Cruces and get great reception on all the networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX) from El Paso with the Zenith Silver Sensor. I don't have direct line of sight, but my antenna is located up high on a window ledge pointing towards El Paso. It was tricky finding the right direction for the antenna, but it seems to work best pointing just W of the Organs. I added a $30 RadioShack amp, the Bi-Directional Cable-TV amplifier (model # 15-2505), which greatly improved the signal strength.
FYI: A DirecTV rep told me a couple months ago that we would be receiving the new MPEG-4 receivers and a dish by the end of the year.
Good luck!
Hi, first time poster here.
So I live accross the border and was searching for this kind of info everywhere.
So far, we get this DTV channels:
4-1 - KDBC - CBS
4.2 - MyNet
7-1 - KVIA - ABC
9-1 - KTSM - NBC
9-2 - KTSM -weather
11-1 - TvAzteca
13-1 - KCOS - PBS
13-2 - KCOS - PBS
14-1 - KFOX - FOX
14-2 - KFOX - Weather
25-1 - KINT - Univision
32-1 - Televisa
36-1 - TvAzteca
Any news of getting the CW any time soon on 7-2?
Is it me? or Channel 4-2 broadcasts on regular 420i its DTV programming most of the time? like Sunday football was 420i and kinda dark, but Monday CSI Miami was HDTV, Wednesday we even got the DTV signal at all (this happens at least twice a week). Last week's Jericho, for example was at the lowest resolution, also The Unit and NCIS were low. The signal strenght that I have of that channel is quite good, about 85%- 90%, so I don't think it's signal related.
Other problems I have is the 32-1 Channel, I get a black screen with no sound and the signal is about 80%, Can you see this channel on your side?
Other channels I don't get are the Telemundo and Telefutura ones, I think they are the 48-1 and 51-1.

I'm in Las Cruces and have noticed some channels come and go as the stations seem to have trouble with their transmitters. An electrical storm, 2-3 weeks ago knocked them out. Fox was gone for a couple of days.
As far as 4, they were out in Las Cruces for over 2 weeks. I wrote the station and the station manager called me back and said they got zapped and required a new $60k part that had to be shipped in. So they were using a low power transmission which is why I couldn't get 4 at all for 2 weeks in LC and you apparently were getting it at 480. I noticed its back now and 4-1 is at 1080i. I think 4-2 is always at 480.
I can see Telemundo on 47-1 which seems to be the same broadcast as Air 48. I'm not getting anything on 32 or 51.
Good luck.
Thanks, it seem channel 4 has its share of problems right now, its been 3 days with 0% signal on either channels.
Will try to find 47-1 (instead of 48-1), luckilly I will get those channels.
Any news when Either Telemundo or Univison will transmit in at least 720p? it seems that the DTV signal is worst than the analog one because of the upconvert they do. They should at least broadcast their primetime shows in high def.
For Channel 38 (which I rarely watch) I only get audio, no video at about 70% signal str.
I think channel 32 is really 29-1, try to search for that channel instead and see the results.
ABC 7 was awful last night, at least desperate housewives was showing at low res like they forgot to turn the HDTV switch (if there's any).
Currently getting my HD in El Paso through Terrible Warner Cable. HD is intermittent. NBC, especially sports, is worthless. Is this just a common problem in the El Paso area that must be put up with?
It' a different subject, but phone and internet has been the same through them. Intermittent. No response; messages are not returned; they don't give me a break on my bill as my service is not out for over 24 hours (it was out for about 8 hours every day for 2 weeks). Take days off from work for technicians who show up late... sometimes not at all.
Is it me or the transmission?:
Specially on NBC while watching both Nascar and Sunday night football, when they pan the camera real fast you can see some awful pixelization happening.. is this problem common?
I don't seem to notice this problem on other channels specially in the not live events like tv shows... perhaps this is a problem with some live transmissions..

Exactly what I am talking about. It's terrible. I paid for HD to get this?? Only seems to be a major problem on NBC sports, as you mentioned.
prthealien 11-23-06, 01:09 AM NBC made the mistake of broadcasting their sports in 1080i. With the codec used to trasmit HDTV over-the-air, the compressed 1080i video breaks up in fast changing scenes. 1080i should really only be used for slow shows like dramas and comedies, not sports and action.
Since 720p takes up less bandwidth than 1080i, the video won't break up in fast-moving scenes. So it's a problem with NBC's choice of broadcasting all their shows in 1080i.
KennyEddy 11-25-06, 11:30 AM ABC's 1080i college game broadcasts have very minimal pixellation and generally good-quality HD -- far better than NBC's. So it's not just 1080i that's the problem. There's some speculation that NBC's WeatherPlus subchannel is stealing excessive bandwidth and making their 1080i broadcast substandard.
FRANK43 11-25-06, 04:42 PM CBS 4-1 has the same problem with the pixilation on sports. I don't recall them having the problem last year before they started channel 4-2, so maybe the problem is partly the extra channel. CBS is in 1080I Fox 14-1 doesn't appear to have the problem even though they broadcast a 14-2. They broadcast 720P also. I thought ABC was broadcasting in 720P ! What ever the problems are both KDBC and KTSM are aware of the problem and have been for some time since I e-mailed them. I sure hope they get this mess fixed. We all spent a lot of money for our gear (3 1/2 years ago) I'm Over the Air so at least I'm not getting robed by cable or Sat.
Frank
FRANK43 11-25-06, 04:46 PM By the way, FOX went down Thursday but they said they should be back up today. KTSM is broad casting only in Standard Definition, don't know what happened there. Maybe they are getting new equipment or sombody isn't pushing the right buttons. Also I was told by one station that a switch does have to be thrown to change to HD and if they aren't paying attention that is why some change after the program starts or sometimes not at all.
hapablap 11-25-06, 10:42 PM Just got an hdtv yesterday. All I have is expanded tier cable tv (not digital cable). I'm getting cbs, abc, nbc, tnt, disc, pbs, but NOT FOX! What gives? I hope it's back up in time for NFL sunday. Is this common occurence for fox in elpaso? Also, whats kinda stuff comes on foxsports hd channel? Thanks.
KennyEddy 11-26-06, 12:56 PM Fox has generally been pretty reliable though they had problems recently at the start of the World Series. Fox Sports only broadcasts intermittently so is usually off-air. The only thing I see on the guide through next week on Fox Sports is Stanford-California football next Saturday.
FRANK43 11-26-06, 03:50 PM hapablap,
If you don't have cables High Definition Package you are not getting a HD picture. If your wide screen TV is filled in it is just the TV expanding the analof picture to fit.
Fox Digital is still off the air as of Sunday 1:45Pm. They were up Saturday morning briefly but went down, I suspect the part the changed blew or something else blew.
FRANK43 11-26-06, 04:00 PM hapablap,
You didn't say where you live but if you are in El Paso you probably can get all local chanells in digital with a indoor or out out door antenna. I live in north east and get all with great signal strength.
hapablap 11-26-06, 04:05 PM I've got a qam tuner so I'm able to receive the local channels in hd.
FRANK43 11-27-06, 04:29 PM From KTSM
Hello Frank;
We had an equipment failure and expect to be back up
sometime Wednesday. At this time we only have one digital microwave feed
from the studio to the transmitter and it went down about noon last
Friday, this is what took us down.

Dear Frank and Angie-
I feel your frustration, completely. The problem is with a board that we
have that continues to go out. There is obviously another problem that
is causing the board to go out, however our engineers (nor the engineers
from the company that makes the board) have been able to track it down.
Please trust that we do not want to loose you as a viewer, are not doing
it intentionally, and are working diligently to fix the problem.
Thank you and have a nice day.

Well, finally yesterday I could see my favorite primetime shows in HD, Still struggling with channel 4-1 (18-1), I get weak or no signal..
Here's a summary of current channels:
4-1, 4-2: Very bad, most of the time is 0% I get it maybe 1-2 days a week
7-1: Pretty good, except sometimes they forgot to flick the HDTV switch and transmit HD shows in std def.
9-1: Always on, almost shows that are HD are transmited in their format, but we have the pixelization problem on sports
14-1: On an off, It seems they have some Hardware problem of sorts, but when's its working is working good.

Seems like they all are having their troubles lately, though 4 is back strong for me, currently at 1080i. For about a week, channel 7-1 was at 17-3.
I was looking at http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx and it appears that the antenaes are up to 1 1/4 miles apart. Looking from Las Cruces they are all at the same direction (southeast) from my house and I don't need to adjust my antenae. Perhaps from your location, channel 4 is at a different angle then the other channels. Might want to play with that a little and turn the antenae a little.
Also when I sent an email to channel 4 at http://www.kdbc.com/contests/3220136.html I was surprised when the station manager called me the next day.
danielre 12-01-06, 11:08 AM I'm a first time poster, and glad to find this thread. I have a Sony XBR2 60" fed from TW HD box.
What is everyone here in EPT using? How is Dish and Direct TV. I too hate watching NBC HD because of its horrible signal. Is this the same OTA? I was wondering if it was a TW thing.
Opticus 12-08-06, 02:22 AM I was wondering if I am able to receive any of the programs in HD through DirecTV? I currently pay for an HD package but can't watch any of the local stations in HD.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

I bet they would charge you extra for the local HD channels.
I'm no sat systems expert, but coudn't you connect a regular antenna on the system to pick up air signals? or must you run a separate coax cable to your TV?

Wow.. What channel numbers are you putting in to view the HD channels. I am using the Directv HD receiver/DVR. (it's not the TIVO brand though). You should be a scan menu for Over the Air Digital Channels.
From the start of the wizard highlight Initial Setup and hit select.
Enter your ZIP code for your area, after entering the last digit... it will start to search
The HR20 will now search for your local market.
This step CAN take a few minutes. I have been told it can take up to 5. Don't hit cancel, unless you have let it go for at least 10 minutes.
Note: If it fails to find your local information; Hit the back button. And try again. If it still fails, try another near by zip code. If it still fails, exit out of the wizard and start over, as it may have failed retrieving the local mappings... If it still fails, then a reboot may be in order.
After the search for the Primary Local Area, the HR20 will report it's findings. At this point, you can complete the setup, or continue to search for a secondary market.
If you select Secondary Market, you will be taken to the zip code screen for Secondary Local Market. Enter your Zip code and hit select.
After you have hit DONE on either the primary or secondary search results; the HR20 will now process the Advanced Program Guide Data. This step will take about 1 - 2 minutes
When it is complete, you will be taken back to the Antenna Setup Menu
At this point the unit will search, then return the results
Click on DONE to continue, or use the back button to make any changes.
FRANK43 12-14-06, 03:02 PM Hi RBA,
Are you getting 7-2 CW on cable or Over The Air? I am getting a signal on 7-2 but no audio or video OTA. Started getting it about 3 days ago.
Hi RBA,
Are you getting 7-2 CW on cable or Over The Air? I am getting a signal on 7-2 but no audio or video OTA. Started getting it about 3 days ago.
I have a Directv box. I have two 7-2 listed. One 7-2 has a signal, but no audio or video. The other one has video and audio. It could be that KVIA mapped two signals to 7-2. I have to check when I get home which KVIA subchannel it's coming over. Is subchannel the correct word for it? ;)
Okay, the CW is coming on OTA 17-4 mapped to 7-2. I manually entered in 17-4 and it mapped to 7-2 CW.
Also to be noted, it appears the CW is not in HD for all those hoping for it. It's in SD (Standard Definition)
Neither 7-2 or 17-4 work, they have very good signal strenght (95%) but no video or audio OTA, I guess is working on cable right?
But the CW has some shows in HD right? Like Smallville, Supernatural, Veronica Mars, etc?
No I have Directv. It's not cable. The signal is definetely coming to me OTA.
Yes, the CW have some HD shows. But it maybe that KVIA will only send it out SD to save bandwidth and space on their alloted signal.
FRANK43 12-15-06, 03:35 PM (OTA) Over The Air means you pick up the signals via the old fashioned way with an antenna. NOt cable and not Satilite.
I get only a strong signal with no video or audio with my tuner and monitor.
Anyone emailed Channel 7 about the OTA signal not having anything? I bet the response will be "we are still testing the CW", if you do email them ask about HD for primetime shows..
FRANK43 12-15-06, 05:33 PM Today they were still running the promo about still trying to work with Time Warner. I think they don't want to do the OTA broadcast because then TW can steel the signal. I have e-mailed KVIA numerous time about their Digital broadcasts but never get any replies. Chriss Swan used to monitor this forum but I don't think he does anymore.
Well, I don't know what to say. Maybe I'm lucky, but the CW is getting picked up by my ATSC OTA tuner. I have the Directv DVR/Tivo verson.
I have read that Directv is in the process of turning on the ATSC/OTA tuners for their in house Directv Pluse HD DVR. For some reason they had them disable. They are pushing out a software upgrade to enable them. You can read for yourself on DBSTALK.com forums: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=71203
Just checked my old Directv HD receiver and it is also picking up the CW.
NOTE: THIS IS THE KVIA version, complete with El Paso local commerials. It's not the National CW that Directv puts on channel 15.
FRANK43 12-16-06, 04:29 PM I think the signal is sent to the satalite through other means and not through the antenna on the mountain
I think the signal is sent to the satalite through other means and not through the antenna on the mountain
Except my old receiver is not hooked up to the dish. It's only hooked up to my roof aerial.
khisayruou 12-17-06, 09:04 PM Like RBA, I am getting the CW network on 17.4 via OTA.
The shows are all in std definition and it doesn't follow the KTLA schedule.
On Eyetv, its on 15.
The CW: Still no audio and video at the moment. Sigh for me and other viewers that have the same problem...
I keep checking every day too see if anything appears on the screen but a black box.. LOL..
Is it just like Channel 4's MyNet? that channel has some interesting programs, like poker championships, but it std def and sometime one channel audio... which it not good with you 5.1 turned on! LOL.
LAR97531 12-18-06, 11:19 PM Today I got CW on 7.2 for about an hour (8:00 pm - 9:00 pm), then it went back to KVIA programming. I'm using a VIP622 Receiver.
LAR97531 12-18-06, 11:23 PM Just a few minutes ago, I got the CW back on 7.2. I don't know, but something strange is happening with this signal, since it seems like not everybody is getting the CW network.
memikee 12-30-06, 01:11 PM I've yet to get 7.2 or 7.4 to work but am now getting 7.3 - KVIA Wx
FRANK43 12-30-06, 04:09 PM Same here OTA signal and nothing on KVIA.com about anything either.
Abaddon 01-02-07, 01:59 AM For those who care, TWC El Paso has replaced the defunct INHD2 channel with Universal HD.
prthealien 01-02-07, 06:33 AM How much does TWC charge to upgrade from basic digital cable to HD?
The 7-4 channel appeared in my TV (ABC-7 Weather), still no 7-2 (CW) though....
Well the channel is there but wit a black screen..
Abaddon 01-08-07, 11:24 AM How much does TWC charge to upgrade from basic digital cable to HD?
http://www.timewarnercable.com/elpaso/products/prices/elpaso.html
EDIT: Holy cow, didn't realize the prices had been bumped that much (across the board). Don't know when the price increases happened as I haven't looked in a while (and my bill is auto-pay).
Gosh, is that expensive???
Let me see:
Std. Digital Service $51.99
HD Tier $8.95
HD DVR $6.95
Receiver $7.64
Remote $0.31 (what? they charge for the remote?)
CableCard $2.95
Like ouch, then $450 one time charge for the HD receiver. Plus the "hidden" fees if you may one OTA HD channels, and if you want like HBO HD is an addiontal $12.95/mo
I'm sticking to OTA...
CANNON-FODDER 01-09-07, 02:27 PM I think the $450 is only if you do not return the DVR after service cancellation...

Correct, and there are also some discounts if you get multiple services through them (eg RoadRunner). OTA HD channels are free (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, PBS) and HBO HD is "free" along with the normal HBO subscription.
However, yes, it is expensive. The Digital Sports Tier was $3 when I originally subscribed to it last year and now it is basically $9. HBO used to be $10 and now it is $12. Overall, it is much more expensive and they haven't really added anything, which is upsetting.
cube799 01-14-07, 09:25 PM I got a 32 inch LCD HDTV on tuesday and connected to an RCA HD amplified antenna.
These are the Digital channels I was able to recieve in the lower valley
4-1 KDBC-DT
4-2 Mynet(SD)
7-1 KVIA-DT
7-3 KVIA Weather
9-1 KTSM-DT
9-2 NBC Weather Plus
11-1 Azteca 13 HD(XHCJE)
13-1 KCOS HD
13-2 KCOS(SD)
13-3 I get a message that says to tune to 13-1 or 13-2
13-4 I get a message that says to tune to 13-1 or 13-2
14-1 KFOX-DT
14-2 KFOX Weather
17-4 The CW(SD)
20-1 Azteca 7 HD(XHCJH)
25-1 KINT-DT(SD)
51-1 KTFN-DT(SD)
I'm getting all of these at about 50% signal or better.
Yesterday in the afternoon or so I lost KDBC and it hasn't come back. Anybody else not getting KDBC. Is KCOS going to add more channels, or did they already have something on 13-3 and 13-4, but stopped airing it. Also Is telemundo(channel 48 available digitally in El Paso)
CANNON-FODDER 01-15-07, 08:01 AM (In an RV with a Silver Sensor) I have always had the channels come and go much more here than anywhere else. When I am up at White Sands, the FM stations are the same way: depends on the weather and time of day.
That being said, around Fred Wilson / Dyer, I have to turn the amp off except for FOX. Otherwise the signal is overdriven - regardless of what the TV diagnostics says when it is on, the signal is better with it off.

I think that you have to re-scan the channels. I lost it last weekend and yesterday, and had to execute an autoprogram in my tv, then the channel went up again.
qwiyibo 01-17-07, 11:00 AM ... Also Is telemundo(channel 48 available digitally in El Paso)
Telemundo digital signal is on channel 47, my tv shows it as 47.1
qwiyibo 01-17-07, 11:11 AM I have a little issue when autoprogramming my tv, I am able to receive:
4.1 KDBC-DT
4.2 Mynet(SD)
7.1 KVIA-DT
7.3 KVIA Weather
9.1 KTSM-DT
9.2 NBC Weather Plus
11.1 Azteca 13 25HD
13.1 KCOS HD
13.2 KCOS(SD)
13.3 KCOS
13.4 KCOS
14.1 KFOX-DT
14.2 KFOX Weather
17.4 The CW(SD)
20.1 Azteca 24HD (Sometimes it is not memorized in my TV and couldn't add it manually)
25.1 KINT-DT(SD)
32.1 Televisa HD
39.2 KSCE (Sometimes it is not memorized in my TV and couldn't add it manually)
51.1 KTFN-DT(SD)
Question, can you have memorized both TV Azteca HD channels (24HD 20.1, 25HD 11.1) in your TV?, I just can memorize one of them, if 20.1 is memorized the 11.1 is not and viceversa, even though both signals are very strong. Thanks
FRANK43 01-17-07, 02:57 PM Hi,
I have not had any problem with KDBC 4-1 accept the occasional switching to HD late.
I do not get 17-4 CW, I do get 7-2 CW but no Audio or Video when I click info.
13-3 and 13-4 have no programming at his time, They can use them later if they want.
See my profile for my set up
I'm still having the 17.4 or 7.2 CW black screen, the 29.1 it's also a black screen, no audio or video, the signal strenght shows 90%, so I don't know why I can't watch these 2 channels yet..
qwiyibo 01-18-07, 11:53 AM It's not 29.1, is 32.1; the RF channel is 29 but the virtual channel is 32.1.
17.4CW is working fine to me.
About 4.1 and 4.2, yesterday I moved my antenna and lost them again, also I lost 17.4, so I had to add them manually again. In my TV I searched for channel 18 to add 4.1 and 4.2, the I searched for channel 17 to add 17.4
algeeba 01-18-07, 04:47 PM I also lost 4-1 and 4-2 last Saturday and haven't been able to get it back (this was with rabbit ears). Before Saturday there was no problem. Monday I put up and 80" 32 element aerial antenna and it still doesn't pick up 4-1 nor 4-2. Weird thing is that a friend of mine on the West side says he can pick it up. I live by Airways. I'll have to autoscan again and see if my TV picks it up.
cube799 01-19-07, 03:07 PM KDBC-DT came back on Monday at around 7 PM. I get a Black Screen on 29-1 and my signal strength is at around 60% and I don't get a signal on 47-1.
FRANK43 01-19-07, 03:22 PM Got this response to an e-mail to KVIA yesterday. So I don't understand those of you in El Paso Who say you are getting programing on CW.
Hi Frank:
Unfortunately, a contractual dispute with Time Warner Cable is preventing
us from broadcasting the CW network in El Paso. We are sending a scrambled
picture to Comcast in Las Cruces so that they can air it. That is why your
are receiving a signal with no picture. All negotiations on this are being
handled by corporate offices from out of town, so we here on a local level
are totally out of the loop. I am hoping this issue can be resolved soon as
it has been a great source of frustration for both us and our viewers. I
appologize for this situation.

32.1 Televisa HD is working fine too, and I do not have Telemundo HD signal
FRANK43 01-19-07, 05:34 PM qwiyibo,
Are you getting your signal over the air (antenna)? I have an HD monitor and a seperate tuner and my tuner does not even find 17.4 or 7.4 only 7.1, 7.2 CW and 7.3 (weather)
qwiyibo 01-19-07, 05:54 PM Yes, via OTA, with a 12 elements VHF/UHF antenna , pointing to the Franklin Mountains. My TV is a Philips 37PF7321D/37.
By the way, my TV doesn't show 7.2.

I don't know about hiring someone to calibrate, but you can do a pretty darn good job yourself with AVIA or DVE (Digital Video Essentials) -- you should be able to find a reference to both on this site. I've heard the argument made that using these produces an image that is most likely less absolutely "correct" but possibly more pleasing to your eyes. Just my $0.02. :)
I'm getting poor/no reception from channel 4-1 or 4-2, I tried reorienting my antenna with no success, I'm worried because the superbowl will be transmitted here and I won't be able to view it in HD, if the problem persist I will have to seek out a bar or something else to view it.
This is the only channel I have problems with, it seems to fix by itself from time to time. Initially I thought the wind would be a factor, but even in non-windy days I don't get those channels, the signal streght is at 0%, at least should be 30% or something like that.
FRANK43 01-24-07, 03:54 PM Hi DrLar,
What are you using for an antenna?
Do you have line of site to the stations antennas on the mountains?
I live in the Northeast near Veterans Park. I have an outside antenna ( radio shack cheapo) and get a signal strength of 9 on KDBC. The lowest I get for any station is 8
I have one of those aerial antennas, with fish-squeleton like form and it's on the roof of a 2 story building, aimed at the Franklins, the weird thing is that I get the analog Channel 4 perfectly, but the digital a big zero, another weird thing, when I do get the digital it's at 90%, I don't understan why it goes from 90% to 0% in a flash.
The others channels never go out, except when they really having problems with their transmitters.
FRANK43 01-25-07, 04:24 PM Boy! That is a tough one. I only watch 4.1 at 11AM (Y&R) and the prime time shows and football of course. I have no problem with their signal strength. Their antenna is the lowest one on the mountain. The southern tip towards downtown. Try aiming your antenna at theirs and see what happens. This site will give directions to the antennas and lots of other good info. http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx This site gives Tv listings and shows which are in HD www.titantv.com Good luck

From what I understand of calibration, it depends on what your going to be mostly watching on that display, or projector. Films or TV. Also, SD or HD. This comes from the gamma curve of the color setup. For SD it's different then for HD. So if you setup for HD then your SD will look slightly off, maybe reds will be less saturated etc.. But you might say, well I'm going to be watching HD broadcasts and DVD's mostly. Solved.. But of course DVD's are mostly SD now, not much selection on the HD-DVD side of things. On the other aspect of setup. If you adjust for film content, you will sacrifice how things look that were captured in their native video format, like 1080i. Like live sporting events.
On picture tube displays, there is already a lot you can do to improve the picture alone. One of the biggest tips they give you is to reduce the brightness setting a lot from the factory setting. This will back off the intensity of the electron beam and the overspill that is caused by a intense beam onto adjacent pixels. Sharpening up the picture, increasing apparent resolution of the display. It works, you do getting a more detailed HD picture. On fixed pixel displays, I would suspect the adjustments more to do with the color setup, one notorious issue with all displays is factory setup's that almost always have a "red push". More color is added into the red then the other two, this tends to make for incorrect flesh tones. Also, the factory setup for a vivid blueish setup right our of the box, this is mostly for display in the stores. Big box stores always have high intensity light, so to cut through the "clutter" of so many different television choices manufactures soon found out if they setup their TV's to the brightest sharpest, most vivid display possible, that they got more sales out of that model. For some reason, TV's that are set to a more blue color setup closer to 9300K also sold better. Maybe because the color setup matches in store lights and won't look so orange under more recommend settings.
Like some other posters said, first try the DVD's that are out there to assist in setup. I did, and learned quite a bit, and got a better picture out of it. I think if you have a dedicated home theater meant for watching films, like a front projector setup. There is a lot to be gained from a calibration. The calibrator guy will come in and use the service setup of the projector, that was used in it's initial setup by the factory. If they are good, they will already have a setup in mind for that particular projector, dial it in close. Then use some test equipment and various test patters and pull it in the last few percent. They should get the best performance, ideal for watching films. But I don't think this calibration is ideal for mostly everyday viewing, mixed content like DVD's and Football on the weekend etc... Just my two $.02.
I had no channel 4 signal for the Superbowl, a true dissapointment, I was saved by TV Azteca Channel, it broadcasted the game in HD in the 36-1 channel (20-1 in some).
I went for the analog channel 4 just to watch the commercials, but they weren't that good this year.
FRANK43 02-06-07, 02:59 PM Got this from KDBC' engineer, Note e-mail address. People we all need to complain to the stations. You would think by now CBS would have fixed the audio problems. Had some choppy, echoey audio last night too!
Frank, my name is Daniel Somes and I am the new Chief Engineer for KDBC. Thank you for bringing these items to our attention. We did have some intermittent issues with the audio coming from CBS during the game and they attributed them to the rain at the location. My engineers were monitoring as closely as possible all of the audio sources that day as we wanted to make sure that it was clean. I was unaware of any issues last week during prime and I will make sure that the engineers pay particular attention to the audio during the HD casts. I have also talked with them about the problems during the Y&R and informed them that closer attention has to be paid to that stream. Please feel free to contact me directly with any further issues you may have with the quality of the signal.

danielre 02-07-07, 10:00 AM Thanks for the response. Well put.
Mister B 03-29-07, 10:32 AM I recently purchased a new digital set top box after my old Samsung went out over a year ago. The new box is a nice little unit from the reputable antenna maker Winegard and was purchased oddly enough at Camping World.
I was pleased to see all of the new sub channels and Juarez stations going digital. I was not pleased to see that some old problems that had been solved over a year ago are back, worst among them the sound on KDBC. During non CBSHD (local) shows the sound is mostly out of the left speaker. This can switch and suddenly blast out of the right speaker if I move the balance control to correct it. I got the engineer at KDBC to correct this before (I am not sure if it is the same guy) so found the email for Daniel Somes on this site and wrote him today. I also mentioned that there is no sound out of the left speaker during those America One Network shows on 4-2.
My other major disappointment is that still there is no CW or 7-2. I wrote KVIA and stressed that they should be a broadcast station and not just a cable provider.
I hope others in El Paso will start making more comments on this site. Other cities our size have many entries and mine is the first for El Paso since February 7th.
FRANK43 03-29-07, 03:08 PM I agree with you. Even worse has been the pixilating on KDBC AND KTSM which they blame on the network. The audion on all stations is not controled very well. I have to increase my level quite a bit and then the commercials just blare so I turn the audio off during them.
CANNON-FODDER 03-29-07, 10:34 PM ... My other major disappointment is that still there is no CW or 7-2. I wrote KVIA and stressed that they should be a broadcast station and not just a cable provider...Neither of my tuners picks up 17.4 / CW on a 'scan'. I get the CW OTA on 17.4 (just checked) by manually entering 17.4 on one tuner. The other (RS Accurian) does not have a [decimal] key, so I have not found a way to get the CW on that tuner. However, I do not see the KVIA CW sub-channel on TWC-ELP, we evidently get KTLA from LA (in SD only with the time lag).

Mister B 03-31-07, 10:12 AM I received a prompt and courteous reply from General Manager Kevin Lovell at KVIA regarding the CW Network issue. KVIA plans to stand firm in their dispute with Time Warner and will not air the CW on 7-2 as that would allow TWC to intercept the signal. (It seems that some people on this site can coerce certain tuners into decoding the signal.) KVIA is adamant that TWC carry the CW on cable channel 13 the current slot for KTLA. I wonder if they realize that many people with older cable installations get an almost unwatchable picture on cable channel 13 due to bleeding into the line of the over-the -air channel 13, KCOS. At a friend's house one can clearly see PBS in the background on KTLA as well as interference from all of the local VHF stations. Maybe this will be resolved when the local analogs go off, although KVIA, KTSM and KCOS plan to move their digital operations down to the high VHF band. Mr Lovell hopes to have this dispute settled soon, however it has already been going on since last September. It would be nice if they could get the CW on in time to catch the shows start over for the re-run season.
CANNON-FODDER 03-31-07, 10:49 AM ...many people with older cable installations get an almost unwatchable picture on cable channel 13 due to bleeding into the line of the over-the -air channel 13... as well as interference from all of the local VHF stations...I am not sure about how the local set-up is with regard to internal wiring vs. external wiring, but in more than one place I have been this is a cable company issue. Demonstrated ingress meant that there was a possibility for egress and a potential fine from the FCC. -- On the other hand, if they live right under the tower...
In KC, before I found this forum, the cable technician did [some procedure] and said it was to catch stray signals to avoid a fine. Caveat - I am not Signal nor an EE, so he could have been watching porn on his little hand-held and I would not have known.
At the least, if they ever have a truck roll for some other reason, the technicians here have been willing to check everything out and would probably have done that check if my wife had asked.

Mister B 04-02-07, 09:39 AM I don't know if they tried to work on the above mentioned problems with the audio on KDBC digital or this is just the random nature of the problem, however now most of the audio is out of the right speaker on 4-1 and there is no sound out of the right speaker on 4-2. I wonder if they have such problems that none of the other channels experience with the audio due to the fact that analog channel 4 never switched to stereo in the mid 1980's when almost all other major network affiliates did so. ( A sad commentary in itself ).
FRANK43 04-02-07, 02:55 PM I'm not having a problem with no audio out of one side or the other. I was told years ago that the reason they never switched to stereo on the analog was first money and then later because of the switch to digital they didn't want to waste the money on all their old equipment.
Mister B 04-03-07, 09:42 AM Today I am getting most of the audio out of the left speaker on 4-1 except during CBS-HD programming and no audio out of the left on 4-2.
rufio2004nfg 04-03-07, 10:36 PM The only problem I'm getting with channel 4 is that the audio is a little stronger coming out of the right speaker, but only on 4-2. 4-1 is perfect for me. I used to get that voice-echoing thing once in a while but haven't gotten it in months.
And I hope they get that CW thing settled. I can't think of any other places that don't get CW over-the-air.
Mister B 04-04-07, 06:30 PM Addressing those of you who report no problems with the audio on KDBC, do you use the digital audio out ports? Perhaps that is my problem as I only use the standard left and right audio ports as my stereo can not handle Dolby (optical) connections.
Mister B 04-11-07, 06:40 PM Today I noticed for the first time that the audio is very well balanced between the left and right speakers on KDBC digital 4-1 during daytime non-CBSHD shows. The sound quality is excellent. I can live with the audio out of the right speaker only on the old America One Network (4-2) shows although it would be nice if they could get it to be mono out of the left and right. Good Job!
dishhead2001 04-13-07, 08:56 PM Anyone in El Paso Ciudad Juarez Las Cruces get anyone of this two channels?
Mister B 04-14-07, 08:56 AM I used to get Telemundo digital (47) when they and the analog version (48) transmitted from a tower in Chaparral NM. Now the analog station is a low power transmitter on the Franklin Mountains. According to the FCC site digital 47 is available at a low 1.09 Kw from the top of the tallest building in Las Cruces and also at a very low .15kw from the Franklin Mts. Here in far East El Paso I can get neither even with a large outdoor UHF antenna.
The Azteca America station is actually KAEP-LP and is analog only at 2.45kw from the west mesa of Las Cruces near their airport. It is owned by KOB in Albuquerque and for years was a translator of their NBC station. I have seen just a hint of it here in Montana Vista.
Mister B 04-20-07, 02:36 PM As of this morning the CW channel on 7.2 is on. They must have finally settled the dispute with Time Warner. The signal is only SD and the Weather on 7.3 is also still on. I hope that is not too much bandwidth being used and affects the ABC HD programming. This is the first I have seen of two sub channels being used. Still it is good to have this network available in El Paso.
FRANK43 04-20-07, 03:29 PM Thanks, They announced it last night on the news. I hope bandwidth doesn't become an issue either. They certainly could get rid of the weather on 7-3 since the audio is messed up all the time and Fox has much better coverage with their radar. I think KDBC and KTSM' pixilation problems are partly due to them using two broadcasts. I'm no expert but you would think by now it would have been fixed if it wasn't. Maybe all will be OK when the analog signal is gone in 2009
CANNON-FODDER 04-20-07, 09:38 PM ...CW channel on 7.2 ... I hope that is not too much bandwidth being used and affects the ABC HD programming. This is the first I have seen of two sub channels being used...There should have been no change to the HD channel, the bandwidth was already diverted -- the CW channel was already being broadcast, most just could not pick it up in a scan until the station set up the channel data to map to channel 7.2.
I just looked and the picture quality was horrible on that channel. I do not remember it being so bad, so they might have even given the HD back some bandwidth... Not that WWF looks much better on TWC, but the prevalent macro-blocking I see in the OTA channel is not present in the TWC signal.
The PBS channel has four sub-channels I think. In Kansas City, the station with the "Final Four" has created a new sub-channel to broadcast a second game for the last two years (in addition to their weather sub-channel). You could look in that thread for comments. I think they did OK, but I do not follow basket-ball.

cube799 05-02-07, 02:30 AM I just Noticed that Kvia added 7-4 LaTV.
In west LC, on the CW I get audio and NO video - just a black box.
Mister B 05-02-07, 10:06 AM I really feel that KVIA is pushing the limit with this fourth channel in it's digital stream. After waiting for almost a year for the CW Network the picture quality is just horrible. Their weather channel is not nearly as informative as KTSM's or KFOX's and now another sub-channel on top of that. I can understand they may see a marketing opportunity with Spanish Videos, I believe they used to be on analog OTA channel 40 before it switched to a Mexico City network, but the weather could go!
FRANK43 05-02-07, 03:21 PM MR. B, I agree with you. You would think these stations would get the Prime Time Network HD working perfectly before the jump off the bridge and create more problems they can't explain.
I still can't see 4-1 or 4-2, no matter how high the antenna is(second story roof) or is oriented, I've got like a 20% signal strength max, all the other channels are OK, I haven't been able to watch any CBS HD content since 2 weeks before the superbowl, before I could w/o any problems and 85-90% signal str. what did KDBC changed back in January to cause this problem? specially to Juarez users.
It seems odd to me I can watch a couple of Las Cruces channels in SD, but I can't see an El Paso channel!
Haven't tried the CW, so it's low res right now? so shows like supernatural, smallville, etc are broadcasted in 480i resolution?
Confirmed, the CW works for me and as I predicted it was 480i resolution, quite cheesy, because most primetime shows should be at least 720p/i res, like Supernatural, Smallville, etc. (the horizontal black bars are a dead giveaway).
As posted before I think is bandwith issue, they can't show 2 full HD channels at the same time.
But the CW is only available in digital form? they didn't add an analog one, did they?
Mister B 05-11-07, 02:34 PM The CW channel is only available over the air on 7-2 at standard definition. As I posted above very disappointing picture quality. Actually, digital SD at 480i can look rather good such as channel 25-1 or 13-2. KVIA is rather over ambitious in trying to squeeze 4 channels into one assigned frequency.
I am not sure why KDBC would not be easy to receive in Juarez. Their tower is on the Franklin Mountains about half way between those of channel 9 and 13. There should be no physical obstruction of the view from Juarez. I would try manually re-entering channel 18 (the actual frequency KDBC HD uses). Also there is a analog channel 20 in Juarez, that could possibly spill over onto channel 18 if very close to the transmitter. I would actually try a much smaller, even indoor, antenna as an experiment.
I've got this response from Ch 7 engineer, no HD in the near future for The CW :(
Kevin Lovell <kevinlovell@kvia.com> to me, Eric, Gary
show details May 11 (3 days ago)
Unfortunately we do not have short term plans to broadcast El Paso CW in High Def due to severe bandwidth limitations.
Kevin Lovell KVIA-TV
And about Ch 4, I will actually move my aerial antenna from one side of the roof to the other, to see if I can watch 4. Like I said bafore, it's the one and only digital channel I can't view!, any tips would help, I oriented the antenna pointing straight to the franklins, no luck, weird enough I can see the analog 4 just fine! (no snow or anything).
Mister B 06-18-07, 06:31 PM Today I e-mailed dsomes@kdbc.com and asked that the time and EPG be corrected. For some time it has been off by one hour. I mostly rely on Titantv.com for my listings but it is frustrating that even when just switching channels the incorrect information is displayed. I also am considering the purchase of a D-VHS recorder and it uses the station provided EPG to set up a on screen grid for easy HD recording. The time is also incorrect at KFOX by being fast about 5 minutes. I have never aquired a good contact there or had any positive results in regards to technical problems. If anyone has influence with KFOX it would be appreciated.
cube799 06-22-07, 12:49 AM The problem with kdbc is that they don't update the guide. I'm sure that it still says that surviver is on thursday at 7, not that I would know cuz I don't watch that crap. It still says that "how I met your mother" is on monday at 7. They show Infomercials from 1 - 2 in the morning, but the guide says that CBS News Up to the Minute is on from 1:07 - 4 AM.
Also the people at Kfox don't take into account that The 9 PM news ends at 10:05 PM. The Guide says that Frasier starts at 12:30 AM, but it actually starts at 12:35 AM.
Okay, our bill from Terrible Warner came in. $154/month for HD. Ouch. I asked about dropping some channels, and it would actually cause our rates to increase.
Need input on the different HD SAT TV and the different providers in the ELP area from those who have it. Not interested in movie channels (such as HBO), just the basics plus sports.
Also, while doing this, what do I do to get the local channels in HD?
Thanks for the help.
Mister B 07-01-07, 10:59 AM In the El Paso area (if you have a clear view of all of the towers on the Franklin Mnts.) a good outdoor antenna will deliver 4,7,9 and 14 in HD. KCOS provides a national PBS HD feed as well as a copy of their own channel in SD. KDBC provides a sub-channel that is America One (mostly black and white very old shows) in the day and Mynetwork during primetime. KVIA provides the CW on a sub-channel as well as all weather and Spanish videos. KTSM has the very informative Weather Plus on a sub-channel. The religous KSCE in available in digital SD as are copies of the Univision and Telefutura stations. Some people claim to get Telemundo, but it must be very weak. From Juarez they have a very good feed of the Azteca HD channel as well as copies of their channels 32 and 11.
At this time all of these digital channels are on UHF and a good outdoor UHF antenna is all that is needed. However, after the 2009 cut off of analog transmittion, channels 7,9 and 13 plan to go back down to their VHF frequencies, so I would recommend installation of a combination UHF/VHF antenna.
The satellite companies are much like cable in that if you want service, you need to take large packages, especially to get HD and they are moving more to leased equipment and long term contracts.
I hope you find this information helpful.
memikee 07-02-07, 04:20 PM $154 - ouch! Sat's way cheaper (about 1/2) but not that much HD on DTV.
SRD,
I'm in the Seattle area but grew up in El Paso and my folks still live there, and have Dish. W/out HD, the bill is $55 for the mid package (around 250 channels), including locals, for 2 receivers. Adding HD is $20 more a month, and a DVR $6 for about $85. That is for about 27 national HD channels and as mentioned, the local channels in HD over the air.
There are lots of promises about more HD channels "Coming soon" on both Dish and DirecTV and cable. Of my 27 national channels, I watch about 10 - 15 with any regularity. Some play the same show over and over, or are not my cup of tea. Sometimes, though, watching Halloween in HD is just worth it.
Miner
20-1 and 13-1 are good channels to test your equipment, as they transmit most of the day on HD, 20-1 is mostly movies of 2003-2005 year and some documentaries, 13-1 is all documentaries..
And of course being summer most primetime HD shows are off, a few repeats here and there, the replacement shows are broadcasted in regular SD (480i/p) like Hell's kitchen
elpasoed 07-13-07, 03:22 PM hi all,
I am new to El Paso and I'm considering getting HD service for my new HD TV. I don't want movies but definitely NEED ESPN and Fox Sports. What are people getting between Time Warner, DirectTV and Dish??
Thanks in advance!

They are going to add ESPN2 HD on channel 896, or already added it. I don't know since I don't have Cable just Roadrunner.
These are the HD Channels you should get, plus the digital Sub channels.

You won't be able to get the Mexican HD Channels, or the KFOX Weather Channel with cable, they're only available OTA. The Channels are:
11-1 XHCJE HD
14-2 KFOX Weather Channel
20-1 XHCJH HD
32-1 XEPM HD
As far as I know, neither Directv or Dish Network have our local HD channels Available.
cube799 07-21-07, 11:50 PM Just in Case Anyone Cares I Made A Thread About Mexican HDTV (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=878152).
Nice info, but talking about US and Mexico, combined you get Univision and Telefutura, which both of them transmit in 480 or you can "stretch-o-vision' them with your TV, absolutely nothing is transmited in HD in those 2 channels, Univision is supposedly rich, why the heck have they bought any HD infrastructure? they should be able to broadcast all Televisa HD shows plus their own shows, like the news, sabado gigante, and even some movies.
cube799 07-24-07, 07:32 PM here's an Idea I had:
We all know that KVIA has to give back either channel 7 or 17 one day, But what if they decide to somehow keep both channels. either by applying for a license or however a company goes about doing something like that. That way they could show KVIA HD, storm track weather, and LATV on Channel 7, and they could show The CW HD, the TUBE and maybe another channel on 17. I figure that if anyone has the money to do this it would be EL Paso's News Leader. KDBC could also decide to have two channels CBS HD and MYNet HD.
This is how I see EL Paso DTV In 2010:
2-1 Televisa Channel 5 HD
4-1 KDBC HD
4-2 AccuWeather
5-1 XEJ HD
7-1 KVIA HD
7-2 Storm Track Weather
7-3 LATV
9-1 KTSM HD
9-2 NBC Weather Plus
11-1 Azteca 25 HD
11-2 Azteca 24 HD (Remapped from 36-1)
13-1 PBS HD
13-2 KCOS
13-3 V-ME
14-1 KFOX HD
14-2 KFOX Weather
17-1 CW HD
17-2 The Tube
18-1 MYNet HD
20-1 Azteca 7 HD
22-1 PBS HD
22-2 KRWG
22-3 Create
26-1 Univision HD
26-2 KINT weather
32-1 Canal De Las Estrelas HD
38-1 KSCE HD
40-1 Multimedios HD
40-2 Multimedios Music Channel
44-1 Canal 44 HD
48-1 KTDO HD
56-1 XHJUB HD
65-1 Telefutura HD
Well That's enough DayDreaming for Today.
5-1 XEJ HD <--- don't think so, I think they will do until Mexico's FCC mandates, and being the low band (Ch 2-6) I think it will be the last channel ever to change to digital.
I suppose that because it's the poorest channel of them all, they have been in the same building since they started and I bet most of the equipment they have is ancient. They re-transmit some Mexico City's "Galavision", maybe they can provide the equipment to at least transmit SD.
Mister B 08-06-07, 10:27 AM I just sent an e-mail to dsomes@kdbc.com and asked if there is any way he could get the audio on 4-2 to come out of both sides. I realize that the America One network is probably just mono but it is rather odd on just one speaker. Mynetwork shows are in stereo. We will see what happens.
cube799 08-15-07, 02:52 PM Is anyone else getting a really weak signal on 4-1 an 4-2? I'm getting about 20 to 30% signal, but the weird thing is that there are no dropouts, or pixelation. Normally their signal is at about 50 or so.
FRANK43 08-15-07, 06:56 PM I get a 6 out of 10 here in the northeast close to rushing and salem. I used to get a 9 or 10
cube799 08-17-07, 10:39 PM KCOS just started sending guide data again, after not sending it this whole week. The thing is the seem to be sending it wrong, 13-1 is sending the data from 13-2, and vice versa. Also 13-3, and 13-4 aren't even sending the PSIP Data. They're still there, but they're on 30-5 and 30-6.
Also would it be possible to get the Las Cruces DTV stations, KRWG DT, and KTDO DT, from EL Paso with a strong enough antenna? Right now I can barely get the KRWG analog channel with my TERK HDTVa. If I were to hook up the outdoor Antenna on my roof, would I be able to get these stations, Or would I need a Long Range Antenna?
CANNON-FODDER 08-18-07, 11:10 PM Looking at the Service Contour Maps, it seems like I should, but I do not see it on my bedroom Sony. I only have rabbit ears, but get 30, 38.1, 51.1 & the like fine...

I've lost channel 4 (no signal at all) for about the past week in Las Cruces. ANybody know what's up with them?
cube799 08-21-07, 02:11 PM I'm getting channel 4 here in El Paso. The weird thing is that I'm getting a signal of 20-30% since about the 14th, but I'm not getting any dropouts or pixelation. I normally get a signal of about 50-60%. I posted about this a couple of days ago, look at post #645.
MesaHills 08-21-07, 02:44 PM I've lost channel 4 (no signal at all) for about the past week in Las Cruces. ANybody know what's up with them?
Same here (not the Las Cruces part, I live in El Paso). KDBC (both 4-1 and 4-2) used to be one of the strongest signals at about 75%-80%, now nada.
cube799 08-22-07, 01:47 PM Well whatever was wrong with KDBC DT, it seem to be fixed. At around 11 AM, the 4-1 and 4-2 channels were gone, but now They're back and at about 70% signal. Also since about 1 or 2 days ago the KCOS guide problem is fixed, and 13-3 and 13-4 are back.
MesaHills 08-22-07, 04:19 PM Thanks for the heads-up Cube799, just before I posted I had removed KDBC from my Favorites list and was no longer checking it!:)
It's back at 75%, as though it never left.
Now I can go back to my usual lurking self.:D
And FWIW, Thank You to everyone that contributes, I've gotten a massive amount of great info from you!http://bestsmileys.com/thumbs/7.gif
FRANK43 08-24-07, 05:21 PM My signal strength is back to 9 out of 10
Mister B 08-25-07, 01:17 PM I have had a moderate sized UHF only antenna mounted at 25 feet, pointed at Las Cruces for years to get KRWG (analog) here in Montana Vista. It is a bit snowy but very watchable. I do not see any sign of KRWG digital on channel 23. The problem is that there are not from the same tower. The analog station has always been from a very tall tower up on the west mesa and I believe the digital station is just off a small tower on the campus of NMSU. They plan to put 23 on "A" Mountain but that still will be a different geometry to get it in El Paso as it is much closer to the Oregon Mountains. As far as Telemundo, I believe it is off of the tallest building in Las Cruces (10 stories) and also not possible here. Possibly people on the West Side of El Paso may have better luck with these Las Cruces stations.
cube799 08-25-07, 02:05 PM According to tvguide.com, KRWG DT now has V-me(spanish PBS) on channel 22-3, Can anyone who gets the digital station confirm this. If this is true it makes me want the digital channel even more. :( I get the analog KRWG too with an amplified indoor antenna, but it's really snow and sometimes it looses the color for a while.
As for Telemundo, I think we have either a booster or a translator station here in El Paso, that helps us get the analog station so well.
I think this record at the fcc (http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/tvq?list=0&facid=36919) is for an analog booster station in El Paso for Telemundo.
I could also be this one. (http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/tvq?list=0&facid=135993)
According to tvguide.com, KRWG DT now has V-me(spanish PBS) on channel 22-3, Can anyone who gets the digital station confirm this. In Las Cruces, the PBS is on 23-1, -2, and -3. The 23-3 is currently showing it is V-me. My wife who watches PBS says that is new. It is coming in at 480i 4:3.
cube799 08-26-07, 09:49 PM In Las Cruces, the PBS is on 23-1, -2, and -3. The 23-3 is currently showing it is V-me. My wife who watches PBS says that is new. It is coming in at 480i 4:3.
Does this mean it's not remapping to the analog channel number? When I went on vacation to my sisters house in Houston, they had the V-me channel on cable, and it was in Spanish. While there didn't seem to be anything really good on the channel, it was watchable. I know my parents would like it, since they don't know English very well. Oh well lets hope, that KRWG somehow finds away to get their signal to El Paso before DTV day, or KCOS gets V-me soon.
For the little bit I watched Vme, it appears just like an analog station - that is, a regular channel stretched out to be widescreen, not a digital channel /square (if that is making any sense).
Didn;t know this, but based on the station id they just showed, Vme is broadcasted by WNET (PBS) out of NY city.
cube799 08-26-07, 11:15 PM Yeah it's a subchannnel, just like the El Paso CW 7-2, or the weather subchannels like weather plus 9-2. It's in 480i and is supposed to be 4:3 aspect Ratio, Maybe you need to change the aspect ratio on your TV. Mine is set to Set by Program which shows 16:9 channels in 16:9 and 4:3 Channels in 4:3.
Mister B 08-27-07, 12:03 PM I just called KRWG (505) 646-2222, and confiremed that they are broadcasting from the new tower on "A" Mountain. Actually, I was dissapointed as I had held out some hope I would be able to receive digital channel 23 when they made that move, however I do not get any movement on the signal meter at all. I guess when the analog 22 goes off the air I will be out of luck for NMSU PBS.
cube799 08-27-07, 04:52 PM Is KRWG DT even broadcasting at Full Power. I read on this thread that DTV Stations were supposed to be broadcasting at Full Power Since July 2006 or so. Does this also Apply to PBS DTV Stations. According to the FCC contour maps their signal is supposed to reach EL Paso. If they are at full Power Would increasing their power also increase their coverage area.
PBS could brodcast V-me in channels 13-3 or 13-4 which are currently "used" in EP, instead of "tune in to 13-1 and 13-2" message that's there all the time.. LOL.
About Telemundo channel, I can't get it here in Juarez, however I get a fairly strong channel 38-1, which is also Las Cruces based. weird huh? maybe they need a little more power, or does 38-1 has a repeater in El Paso?
cube799 08-29-07, 05:28 PM Neilsen came out with new DMA rankings a couple of days ago.
2007-2008 DMA Rankings (http://www.lostremote.com/2007/08/23/new-nielsen-dma-rankings-released/)
El Paso moved up +1 to DMA #98.
On last years DMA ranking El Paso was #99.
The article says we added, 8,770 TV Households.
cube799 09-01-07, 04:00 PM On Friday, Late night with Conan O'Brien wasn't in HD, just window boxed. Was it because of their Friday Night Football show. I didn't Watch the Jay Leno show, so I don't know if it was in HD. Was this a One time screw up, or Should I expect this Every Friday For The rest of High school Football season. I Didn't get My HDTV until January of This Year, so I don't know. It also had to be on the day Scarlett Johansson was on I would have loved to have seen her in HD.:mad::mad:
I went to the Ktsm website, and e-mail the programming guy, and the tech guy.
does anyone have the E-mail for the KTSM engineer.
Also one more thing, I read a couple of pages back on this thread that the guy from KDBC E-mailed someone and said that they were buying the equipment that would allow them to show Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune in HD. That was back in 2006, What happened These shows are still in SD. :(
FRANK43 09-01-07, 04:24 PM KTSM is devans@ktsm.com
KDBC is bwatkins@kdbc.com
I hate these friday night late sports programs. If you are a fan go to the game!!!!
conflix 09-02-07, 02:15 AM Just realized today (first saturday of college football) that time warner added espn2 to the hd tier on channel 896. Was curious to know how long it has been there? It definitely slipped by me.
KTSM is devans@ktsm.com
KDBC is bwatkins@kdbc.com
I hate these friday night late sports programs. If you are a fan go to the game!!!!
Yeah, I hate those friday night blitz shows on local channels, I think either 7 or 4 airs them after the late night shows.
In that case I think the KTSM guy forgot to switch to HD to air Conan in HD.
BTW are they any time airing Jimmy Kimmel Live in HD? it is, I think the only late night show in SD I've seen.
Also all the game shows and news shows are in SD, it's about time to go HD don't you think?
asterion 09-02-07, 07:18 PM I just called KRWG (505) 646-2222, and confiremed that they are broadcasting from the new tower on "A" Mountain. Actually, I was disappointed as I had held out some hope I would be able to receive digital channel 23 when they made that move, however I do not get any movement on the signal meter at all. I guess when the analog 22 goes off the air I will be out of luck for NMSU PBS.I see that you're in El Paso. I'm in Las Cruces, practically on the NMSU campus (on Solano near Solano and University), and am getting the channel 23 signals. In fact, according to the signal meter on the TV, I'm getting them at a signal level of about 85, far better than I'm getting the commercial stations from El Paso. Anyway, more interesting is that on all 23-x channels I just get a black screen. The signal is coming in, but apparently there's nothing to display. Is anyone else having this problem?
Also, while I can get the commercial signals pretty well from El Paso, which is pretty impressive in my opinion, as AntennaWeb doesn't even mention the digital broadcasts from KTSM and KDBC. Of course, the map also says that the 22-1 transmitter is just about a quarter-mile almost directly west of my house, so I'm not sure how reliable the information is. However, I can not manage to pull in KCOS. While not getting KCOS isn't a big deal (if I can pull in KRWG), I was wondering if anyone could tell me about where the transmitter is. I've got the antenna pointed at 145 degrees (I believe I got the magnetic deviation correct) to get KTSM, KDBC, KVIA, and KFOX.
I'm using an Insignia NS-LCD32 TV (that's a 32" 720p TV) with a Terk HDTVa antenna (that's an amplified highly-directional indoor antenna.)
cube799 09-02-07, 10:39 PM Yeah, I hate those friday night blitz shows on local channels, I think either 7 or 4 airs them after the late night shows.
In that case I think the KTSM guy forgot to switch to HD to air Conan in HD.
BTW are they any time airing Jimmy Kimmel Live in HD? it is, I think the only late night show in SD I've seen.
They air the Blitz shows after the news on 7 and 9, and 4 shows it during the last 5 or 10 minutes of the news.
Kimmel, Carson Daily which airs after Conan, and the show with that English guy which air after Letterman, Aren't in HD.
conflix They've been announcing this on their website in the Section called legal Notices for at least 2 Months. There it said that they were going to Remove ESPN Classic I think from Analog Cable, But It doesn't say that any more. Hopefully now that they removed that channel from Analog, they'll use that bandwidth to add More HD Channels. I've also Noticed that they have some channels on both Analog cable and digital cable, So Hopefully they're planning to remove those channels from Analog Cable too in order to Add HD Channels.
Some examples
CNN 33 and 350
Lifetime 49 and 204
ION 19 and 102
EWTN 64 and 150
I doubt They"ll remove CNN and Lifetime any time soon, But Ion and EWTN might go soon since their not very Popular.
I also Found this on their website:
Analog Cable Packages
Basic Service $9.70
Standard Service $47.99
Digital Cable Package
Digital Value Tier $52.99
Which makes makes me think that they want more people to upgrade to Digital Cable, Since it's only About 5 Dollars more expensive, In order to get rid of Analog Channels to add more HD Channels. They have to compete with Directv's Claims of 150 HD Channels some how.
Now that I went to the Legal Notices section it no longer says add ESPN 2 HD. It was updated on 8/31/2007 So I think they added ESPN 2 HD on or a couple of days before that date.
Anyway, more interesting is that on all 23-x channels I just get a black screen. The signal is coming in, but apparently there's nothing to display. Is anyone else having this problem?
Not with 23-1,-2, -3. I'm on the west side of LC and receive good pictures on all 3 channels. Being on the west side I get 23 and the EP channels pointing in the same direction. 23-1 comes in at 1080i, and the other 2 channels are at 480i.
I get the black screen, with sound, on channels 7-2 and -4. I am curious as to what causes the black screen. I wrote channel 7 and didn't receive any answer.
Guess there isn't any golf fans here.
The idiots at channel 9 preempted Tiger Woods and the PGA playoffs for Jerry Lewis (Jerry was entertaining 40 years ago when he first was on).
They couldn't even figure out to put one or the other show on the back channel - there still running the weather and traffic cameras over there (riveting TV).
Of course, when you try to call them no one is home today except for the poor girl answering the phone in the news department. I told her I had a great news tip for her - the morons at channel 9 preempted Tiger Woods for CarrotTop!
cube799 09-03-07, 05:20 PM I was Wondering If There was NBC Programing that was Supposed to be on instead of the Telethon. They Could Have at Least Turned on A Subchannel just for the Time the Telethon Is on, and put regular NBC Programming on it, and an Alert on The Main Channel telling people about the extra channel. It could have even been 16:9 SD so HD Shows Could Be shown in Widescreen. During March Madness, I heard that some CBS Stations turned on temporary subchannels to show more than one game at once.
One More Thing That ticks me Off About KTSM is that they show Stargate SG-1 At 1:30 in the Morning, and in A Window Box. While I don't normally condone Stretch-O-Vision This Is One case were I wouldn't mind them Using it. That Way all I would have to do Is turn on The Zoom 1 aspect Ratio on my TV. Or They Could Turn on the Stretch-O-Vision, and do the zooming themselves At The TV Station, they could even automate it.
Mister B 09-04-07, 10:40 AM I am on my 5th ATSC tuner and have had a problem with "black screen" for some minor channel on each of them. In all cases the signal meter shows a strong signal but no audio or video is displayed. The first two Samsung tuners did this with KSCE channel 39 and since then I have had it on KINT and KTFN and now on the 7-3 weather channel.
I believe in each case there is some defect in the digital information that is sent along with the broadcast that causes a problem for a particular tuner. KSCE just had a very difficult time getting their system running on a low budget. KINT and KTFN still do not "re-direct" or "re-name" their channels and just let the display show the actual frequency used as channel 25 and 51rather than re-name them as channels 26 and 65. I was told by the manager at KVIA that the weather on 7-3 is at the minimum bit rate and this no doubt causes problems for some tuners.
The tower for KCOS is on the Franklin Mountains with all of the other major El Paso stations. It is the lower one at the south end of the ridge. The problem in Las Cruces may be the religion channel on analog 30. Even here in El Paso I can get a very weak signal on 30 at night when KCOS goes off. (KCOS uses 30 for digital broadcast) When KCOS comes on at 6:00 am there is no sign of an analog signal on 30 as it is not possible to receive an analog and digital channel on the same frequency at the same time. KLCP-LP is located on the hill at the NE quadrant of the intersection of highway 70 and Interstate 25. I have wondered what area they make reception of KCOS impossible and why the FCC allows this. In Las Cruces I believe if you check your analog reception and get a decent signal on 30 that will explain the lack of KCOS. In February 2009 KCOS will move back down to channel 13.
One day when the weather was just right I did receive KRWG-DT on 23 here in El Paso. Their tower is on "A" mountain and my receiver did not display a black screen.
FRANK43 09-04-07, 05:06 PM Below is the answer I got back from KDBC for an e-mail I sent yesterday as to why the US Open tennis was not in HD. Funny after i sent the email and it was read in a matter of minutes the Open switched to HD. Note the cell phone number.
Mr Hoegler thank you for your input on the HD issue. We jad some difficulties with our HD IRD for CBS today which led to the first part of the coverage in standard def. Please feel free to contact me directly in the future so w can answer any concerns you may have. My cell is 525 1559
Again thank you for watching and supporting KCTV

asterion 09-04-07, 07:08 PM I am on my 5th ATSC tuner and have had a problem with "black screen" for some minor channel on each of them.
So I take it that means I'm probably screwed with that channel and this tuner. The TV obviously has a ATSC tuner in it, but what if I got one of those external tuners? Could I just pass the signal along through the coax or would I have to use the other HDMI input?
I'd hate to spend the money, but if I got one that could also be used with my computers (the desktop has a TV card but it's analog-only) and small enough to take with my laptop I wouldn't mind as much.
For external tuners I would go all out and buy those DVD recorders or Hard Drive recorders, lots of them feature ATSC tuners. Wait, all devices with analog tuners MUST have ATSC tuner also (since July 2007), look out for those salesmen trying to sell you one w/o it!
Since recorders must have Antenna entry to record over the air stations they must have ATSC integrated.
Mister B 09-05-07, 11:54 AM Be aware that DVD recorders are only standard definition tuners. Also no ATSC tuner passes along a HD signal through a coax output as we are familiar with on old VCR's etc. The output is usually component and/or HDMI. I actually had very good results with a Winegard HDTV tuner sold by Camping World in Anthony,NM. It is very small (about the size of an answering machine) but has only component outputs. If I were so close to NMSU, I would go over to Milton Hall and discuss the problem with an engineer at KRWG. They have always been very friendly and knowledgeable on the phone.
cube799 09-05-07, 04:40 PM I am on my 5th ATSC tuner and have had a problem with "black screen" for some minor channel on each of them. The first two Samsung tuners did this with KSCE channel 39 and since then I have had it on KINT and KTFN and now on the 7-3 weather channel.
What brand were the tuners and when did you buy them? Were any of them LG, because my TV is from LG so I'm assuming the built in tuner is also LG. It's also sort of new, I bought it in January of this year. I don't know the date it was manufactured, but I'm assuming sometime in late 2006. I'm almost sure it has a 5th Generation Tuner, because a couple of weeks ago when KDBC was having problems, I was still getting the channel without dropouts or pixelation with a weak signal of about 20 to 30%. The only way I could explain this is 5th Generation Tuner. The Only time I've gotten the the Black Screen is with one of The Mexican HDTV channels 32-1. I couldn't even get this channel until March. Since then though I've only gotten the Black screen once in mid August for one day. I think this may have been a Problem with the Station though, because since the day it came back I haven't had Reception problems.
I Would recommend you get a 5th Generation LG Tuner. It could be from someone else though, just make sure it's 5th Generation. Also before you buy a Tuner look it up in the Internet. Look for reviews, and you could post here about it to see if anyone has had problems with it.

KINT and KTFN do this for me too, but I think this is a problem with the stations. I think their not sending the remapping data yet, they're not even sending the captions. Hopefully though, when enough people get the converter boxes this will change. They probably don't do it now, because the percent of viewers who watch the digital channel aren't big enough.

From the FCC Website
"FCC Requirements
LPTV stations have "secondary spectrum priority" to full-service stations. This means LPTV stations must not cause interference to the reception of existing or future full-service television stations, must accept interference from full-service stations, and must yield to new full-service stations, where interference occurs."
So from what I understood of this, KCOS could request that KLCP-LP change channel #, but they probably don't because they're moving to 13 on DTV Day and they figure it wouldn't be worth it. Anyway Las Cruces already has PBS.
Also can you explain what you mean by the weather was just right. Was it sunny, windy, cloudy, raining?
asterion 09-05-07, 09:07 PM If I were so close to NMSU, I would go over to Milton Hall and discuss the problem with an engineer at KRWG. They have always been very friendly and knowledgeable on the phone.I'll give that a shot. I had hoped it was a problem that cropped up over Labor Day weekend but it looks like it isn't.
As for analog 30, I just checked. I don't get a decent signal, but it's definitely there. If I actually used the UHF part of the antenna to get the analog signals, it'd probably be coming in clean. It just doesn't make sense to me that it might be overriding the KCOS signal. According to RadioStationWorld, KCOS is broadcasting at 1000 kW, while that religious station is broadcasting at 42.5 kW. That's why I asked about the location of the tower and if I needed to move my antenna to a different angle. I suppose it could be at the extreme end of the range of my little antenna and it's just too far away.
Mister B 09-06-07, 09:38 AM My first ATSC tuner was a Samsung model t-165. There were none available in El Paso at that time and I ordered it from New York. That was 2003 and the first digital stations were just coming on so of course there were a lot of problems. Next I found a used Sony Direct TV tuner with built in OTA-HD. I had read that it would work without a subscription to satellite and it did but rather limited. I sold it to someone who actually had Direct TV in 2004. It never would get channel 7-1. I replaced it with a newer model Samsung ( I do not recall the model) and had nothing but trouble with it. I even sent it back for repair to New Jersey but it was not much better. It went to Goodwill in 2005. Next was the above mentioned Winegard from Camping World which actually only had trouble with KSCE. I still have it and it may be used as my Mother's converter in 2009. Now I have the Tivo Series 3 DVR which only has trouble with the two El Paso Spanish channels noted above. The TV is a LG and although I have not used it's tuner much it can get every channel.
The day I got a usable signal on KRWG here in Montana Vista was just after a thunderstorm. It lasted about half an hour then the signal went back down to the usual 30%.
I believe if you can get any signal at all on an analog channel such as the 30 in Las Cruces that will prevent reception of the digital station and vice versa.
asterion 09-06-07, 08:20 PM Well, now I can't get any signal at all on 23-x. Not that I care too much tonight, since I'm watching football, but it's annoying.
cube799 09-10-07, 03:57 PM Late Night With Conan O'Brien Wasn't in HD his Friday either, because of their stupid High School Football Show.:mad::mad:
I also saw that The Jay Leno Show Was also in HD. I really don't know why they have to air these shows right after the news, I mean who really watches them at this time. The Actual Football fans are at the Game, and if one of the games were to end at around this time, I doubt the Fans would get home in time to watch these shows. I think they should Air these shows, sometime on Saturday.
From what I understand NBC sends them the Late Night feed At around 10:35 PM, Why can't they just record it and air it delayed. or if They're going to show the Analog Upconvert, why can't they turn on the Stretch-O-Vision for Conan and then do A zoom to get rid of the Letterboxing. They don't even have to do a zoom, I could do that myself. I know it Airs at Midnight, but I'm sure they must have someone there monitoring the digital and analog signals just in case something happens, they'd be stupid not to. Why can't they teach this person how to turn on the stretch-O-Vision, for Conan, and Also for Stargate SG1.
loves2watch 09-10-07, 07:08 PM I am using a Dish Network ViP 622 for my OTA tuner and get 3 KRWG channels, 1 HD, 1 SD, and 1 Spanish. I also get all of the local networks NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC as well as 2 HD channels from Juarez from my rooftop antenna. HD rules and all of my signals are above 85 on the signal meter.
We just got an HDTV at work, it grabs channel 20-1, 13-1, 13-2 and 25-1 w/o an external antenna! and way indoors, no window near it, just a regular rabbit ears antenna
We are going to install an external antenna soon though... would be awesome.
Or that darn SKY system which looks AWFUL on the new TV!
cube799 09-12-07, 06:46 PM @ Loves2watch
Where are you? You didn't say in your post. In your signature it says "Lost Causes, NM", is that a real place, because I've never heard of it. If it is a real place, is it closer to El Paso, or Las Cruces? Also there are 3 Mexican HD channels, I get all 3 of them with my Amplified Indoor Antenna. since you can only get 2, you might need to buy an Amplifier or a rotator for your outdoor antenna. You didn't mention the subchannels, you are getting them right? We get all Seven Major American Networks, here in El Paso, ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, MYNet, NBC, and PBS, but The CW and MyNET are on subchannels so they're only in SD.
Here's a list of the DTV channels I'm getting:
4-1 KDBC CBS HD
4-2 MyNet SD
7-1 KVIA ABC HD
7-2 CW SD
7-3 Stormtrack 24/7 Weather SD
7-4 LATV( English and Spanish Music Videos) SD
9-1 KTSM NBC HD
9-2 NBC Weather Plus SD
11-1 XHCJE TV Azteca 25 HD (Real channel 34-1)
13-1 PBS HD( All HD or Widescreen SD goes off-air at around 11:30)
13-2 KCOS SD
14-1 KFOX FOX HD
14-2 KFOX Weather
20-1 XHCJH TV Azteca 24 HD (24/7 HD, Mostly American movies and Documentaries In Spanish, Mexican Real Channel 36-1)
25-1 KINT Univision SD(Booooo!!!)
32-1 XEPM Channel of the Stars HD(mislabeled Should be XHJCI HD  Mexican real channel 29-1)
32-2 XEPM SD 16:9 Stretch-O-Vision
38-1 KSCE Religious SD( could care less about this channel)
51-1 KTFN Telefutura SD
I put the real channel number on the Mexican channels, just in case you want to see if you can get them by tuning to that channel. According to TVfool.com there is a Digital Low Power Station 36-1 KKNJ LP that is 81 miles from EL Paso. If you're close to that station it might be preventing you from getting TV Azteca 24 HD. This station is one of the Reason why I don't want to Buy a long range(100 miles Maximum Range or more) Outdoor Antenna. I would really hate to lose one of My Favorite Channels TV Azteca 24 HD, Because of A Low Power Digital Station, especially if it's A Religious Channel. hopefully if this did happen, I could just turn the Antenna to fix the problem.
@DrLar
From what you said you might just need a better indoor antenna, but an outdoor antenna may cost about the same and work better. I've seen some at WalMart and Radio Shack for about 60 to 70 dollars. Another reason Why I haven't bought an Outdoor Antenna is that It seems like it would take a long time to Install, plus I'd have to replace the One that's already up there, but not connected.
You should be able to Install both, just hook up the sky with S-video or Composite(3 wires) and install the antenna using Coax Cable. If I were the company though I would dump SKY and tell them on the Phone Why Especially if they're charging for Multiple TVs. Watching SD on HDTV is like having bought a Color TV when they were new, and only watching Black and white Shows. At UTEP they have some nice LCD TVs at the Student Union, but they have them hooked up to SD Dish network, They don't even have them hooked up to an Outdoor antenna. The older TVs they have are hooked up to an Antenna and get good analog reception. I don't understand why they don't hook up the outdoor antenna To The LCD's.
Mister B 09-13-07, 10:32 AM According to the FCC site KKNJ-LP is only an application at this time for a translator station for KDBC on channel 36 in Alamogordo at 13.1 Kw. I would not worry about this preventing the reception of channel 20-1 (on 36) unless one was much closer to Alamogordo than Juarez.
Yeah, the external antenna at work it's a stretch, we can't put anything anchored to the roof according to the contractor that maintains the roofing (they won't repair damage done by the antenna's feet or anchors). The SKY antenna is bolted to the side wall so no problem there, is there some kind of similar antenna anchor like the satelite than can go in a side wall instead? the building it's like 30 feet high.
cube799 09-13-07, 07:06 PM I found 3 Antennas that can be mounted on roof like a satellite, but it looks like they can also be bolted on a side wall. The last 2 look kind of big though.
This one looks kind of small for a outdoor antenna, but it has both VHF and UHF Elements.
The website says:
"Mini mast and base enable antenna to be installed on a roof, wall, balcony or in an attic; compact size and lightweight design make it easy to carry up a ladder and handle while installing on a roof"
I would recommend this one since it's from the same company that makes my indoor antenna, and it has that weird triangle thing like my indoor antenna.
Terk Outdoor Amplified HDTV Antenna HDTVo (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7322499&productCategoryId=abcat0107006&type=product&tab=7&id=1118844006524)
this one also has a satellite like mount, and it claims to get VHF.
DB4 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8408476&type=product&id=1183160363349)
This antenna is UHF only so it might not pick up 7, 9, 11, & 13 after the DTV Transition if they go back to VHF. I know 7 & 13 are going back to VHF, and I think 9 is going back to VHF. 11 may go back to VHF, but since it's a Mexican channel that's still a long time away.

Excuse me, do you mean UTEP? I noted that KCOS studios recently moved to the EPCC.

If your talking to Drlar no he's not from UTEP, He's from Juarez which is why he Mentioned SKY.
Sorry, when I saw the TWC, especilly since I don't have cable TV, I thought he met Texas Western College now I realize he probably met The Weather Channel. When I was much younger in the 1950's era, I went to New Mexico A&M, now NMSU and UTEP was then TWC.
I guess that shows my age :)

cube799 09-17-07, 03:32 PM Check the legal notices at the Time Warner El Paso website.
Heres the link

This seems like a slow month, their only adding one channel, the Fox Business channel in SD. Last Month they changed around some of the music choice channels and removed some. Even worse they may actually have to stop carrying Universal HD, but they say they rarely have to cease carriage.
I really wish they would stop adding SD channels though and start adding HD Channels. They should at least place a higher priority on adding HD channels instead of SD channels. I really don't know When they're going to add more HD channels, but if you want speculation you should read post # 670 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=11504069&postcount=670) that I wrote about two weeks ago.

FRANK43 09-18-07, 05:38 PM Has anyone complained to KDBC about not showing Jepardy and Wheel of Fortune in HD? I emailed them and have heard nothing back. Last seasons excuse was they need some additional equipment
As far as I know or seen, no game show is in HD, including the prime time ones like Deal or no Deal, 1 vs 100, power of 10, etc. all of them are in SD
FRANK43 09-19-07, 05:09 PM Wheel pf Fortune and Jeopardy both say "presented in HD" at the beginning of their shows
cube799 09-19-07, 11:05 PM Yeah Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy are in HD in some markets, I saw them In HD when I was at Houston. KDBC doesn't show them in HD, because they either need to buy an HD pathfinder server, or upgrade the one they have to HD.
merchione 09-21-07, 10:29 AM Well I guess TWC still thinks we dont matter here in ELP. I guess we dont generate enough business for them to keep us up with the main cities when they get their HD channels:
"Time Warner: TBS HD For 6 More Cities
The channel will air this year's baseball playoffs.
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (September 20, 2007) -- Time Warner today said TBS HD will be added to at least six more markets by October.
TVPredictions.com (http://www.tvpredictions.com) reported this morning that Time Warner subscribers in the Winston Salem, North Carolina area would get TBS HD on October 1.
Mark Harrad, a Time Warner spokesman, told TVPredictions.com (http://www.tvpredictions.com) this afternoon that the channel has already been been added in TW markets Austin, Texas and Waco, Texas.
He added that it will be added next month in Columbia, South Carolina, San Antonio, Albany, New York and Portland, Maine.
TBS HD is eagerly awaited by sports fans because the channel will carry first and second round action in this year's Major League Baseball playoffs.
Mark Harrad said he did not know of other Time Warner markets where TBS HD will be added. Normally, Time Warner negotiates the national rights to carry a channel and then allows for the local TW system to decide when and how to carry it.
Time Warner has also told its customers in the Winston-Salem area that several other HD channels will be added on October 15, including CNN HD.
But Harrad said he could not confirm the CNN HD addition."

asterion 09-23-07, 12:16 PM A couple more questions:
Does anyone manage to get repeater signals from the stations in Albuquerque or Arizona? I'm very mad at CBS, FOX, and the NFL in general this week. I'm stuck with line-of-sight problems, of course, which are as much of a problem as distance. (I agree with Easterbrook that NFL Sunday Ticket only with DirecTV should be ruled an illegal monopoly and be forced to be opened to all providers.)
Also, any consensus on what the best provider for HD in Las Cruces is, assuming an antenna will be used for broadcast signals? I've got Dish Network (haven't bothered to get HD programming from it yet) and the other possibilities are DirecTV, Comcast, and I think that's it. I have personal problems with Comcast, so that leaves the two satellites. Taking all extra programming packages (like Sunday ticket or HBO) off the table, what's the better choice?
Mister B 09-24-07, 12:27 PM None of the translator stations from Albuquerque (or Arizona) are available in Las Cruces. KOB channel 4 in ABQ used to have a translator on channel 42 on the west mesa of Las Cruces but that was converted to the Spanish station KAEP. The translators in Caballo reach to about the Hatch area and the Deming channels about to the Dona Ana county line.
Just looked at the URL for KRWG-TV and they are announcing that the audio is not available on the digital signal for about a week. For the full story here's their URL:

merchione 09-25-07, 01:00 PM All of us that are TWC subs should get together and send an email to Time Warner Cable’s Southwest Division or TWC Headquarters and ask them to move us to a better Division that can give us more HD Channels.TWC SD has small city's in it:
Del Rio / Eagle Pass/ Uvalde
(Border Corridor)
Corpus Christi
El Paso
Beaumont / Port Arthur
(Golden Triangle)
Kerrville
Laredo
Rio Grande Valley
Cuero / Gonzales / Columbus
(South Central)
Wichita Falls
El Paso is a major city 22th in pop in the U.S (http://www.city-data.com/top1.html)., not counting all the military personal going to call El Paso home in the next couple of years.......come on now treat us as such TWC, MOVE US.
How about a Texas Division?
San Antonio
Dallas-Fort Worth
Austin
El Paso
alot of subs in those city's.....That would be ideal.
CANNON-FODDER 09-28-07, 09:40 AM ... El Paso is a major city 22th in pop in the U.S (http://www.city-data.com/top1.html) ...But, somehow only rated as #98 in the Designated Market Area (DMA) (http://www.tvb.org/rcentral/markettrack/US_HH_by_DMA.asp) ranked by households ... Whereas Roanoke-Lynchburg, VA at DMA #67 is not in the top 100 cities by population.
v/r,
C-F
Mister B 09-28-07, 10:46 AM The reason El Paso is the #98 DMA while smaller cities rank higher is that we have very few viewers in the outlying areas. The EL Paso DMA is only El Paso, Hudsputh, Culberson and Dona Ana Counties. The counties to the east are extremely sparsely populated so that just leaves basically El Paso and Las Cruces. Mexico does not count. Albuquerque is #44 although the population of that city is less there are translators all over New Mexico and most of the state is in their DMA. In Virginia as mentioned, they do not even need translators for many outlying small towns to receive channels.
cube799 09-28-07, 02:23 PM Another reason were 98, is that we have a lot of Spanish only viewers like my Parents. If they take this into account and I'm sure they do, it could also be, because El Paso's not as Prosperous as other cities our size. After all the ones who care the most about the DMA rankings are advertisers, because it tells them how much they can be charged for a commercial.
cube799 09-29-07, 01:58 PM 14-1 and 14-2 aren't sending remapping data, they're not even sending the station ID. I have to put either 15-3 for KFOX DT, or 15-4 for KFOX Weather. This happened Last Night when Frasier was on at around 12:35 AM. I figured it was, because of the rain, especially if they got Hail like we did at our house. I also thought it would be fixed by this morning, but it's still broken.
Mister B 09-30-07, 09:13 AM I am glad to know what is wrong with KFOX. My Tivo Series 3 will not get any station that does not re-map channel data. That is why I can not get 26-1 or 65-1. (Actually I get a strong signal on the meter but the dreaded "black screen") I can run a scan and get channels that Tivo does not include data for such as all of the Juarez stations but for some reason it will not even scan in a channel without this channel information. I am sure KFOX will fix it within a few days.
asterion 09-30-07, 12:18 PM Yeah, what the heck is going on with KFOX? I'm getting signals on 14-1, 15-3, and 22192-3. I didn't even know my TV went up to 22192-3. (Insert Spinal Tap reference here.)
On the plus side, I'm finally getting KRWG.
JOENAMCO 09-30-07, 03:53 PM Today Sunday Sept.30 2007 I was trying to watch your channel HD OFF AIR the signal keeps breaking up, Called your Eng. number got some one who kept telling me it's Directv(?) I tried to explain to him it's OFF AIR he didn't understand ???,Called and talked to someone in the NEWS room and was told it was my area,Was told to call back on Monday when someone from Eng. would be working...
How do you run a station with no one on duty in Eng.?

cube799 09-30-07, 03:57 PM Channel 7 Also seems to be having problems. They're showing NASCAR HD right now, but it's pretty much unwatchable. The video and audio skip about every 3 to 4 seconds. I checked their SubChannels, and they have the same problems. I checked the signal on my TV and it didn't move, so this is definitely coming from their end. I think they're not compressing properly. They should at least compress the weather channel, when they show HD. Few people watch that full time anyway. I only watch it when I want to check the Temperature in El Paso, or when I miss the forecast. KVIA could also lower the frame rate on that channel if they haven't done so all ready. I really hope this is fixed by 8:00 PM, because The New Season of Desperate Housewives starts today.
JOENAMCO 09-30-07, 04:00 PM Thanks for checking, now if I can only get the staff at channel 7 to wake up
cube799 09-30-07, 04:11 PM I still think this is a compression Problem, because it's doing the same thing with their other channels. I really don't understand why they would need an engineer to fix this. It should be as simple as using a Computer program that can adjust the bitrate for each channel. I've seen them compress the weather channel before, I think this was done accidentally because you could barely see it. Some one eventually realized it and it went back to the normal compression level.
Even if it was something wrong with the Hardware, like the MUX, Haven't they ever heard of overtime pay. They should have an engineer on standby, even if it's not the main engineer, that way if they need him they can call or page him.
JOENAMCO 09-30-07, 04:13 PM Money!!!
cube799 09-30-07, 04:32 PM I would buy that if it were KDBC, or one of the other stations, but they're always bragging about how they're number one, at least when it comes to News. They don't even put ads on their weather channel, It just says KVIA.com where the add should be. I'm thinking this also them bragging, about how they have so much money that they don't need to put adds on their weather channel.
It went SD for a while, but now it's HD again, It skips some times, and it even shows the black screen.
FRANK43 09-30-07, 04:34 PM These stations spend all their money on worthless weather forecasters and equipment for them and news. If something happens so what your not going to stop watching your favorite shows. What a mess it is going to be when analog is gone!
About FOX my one HD TV with built in tuner I had to do a new search to get 15-3 and 15-4 but on my other which I have a separate tuner it auto switched to 15-1 and 15-2
asterion 09-30-07, 09:44 PM Well, the only reason I knew about 15-3, 15-4, and 22192-3 is because it was easier to do an "add channels" search with my TV to add the KRWG channels than it was to manually add them in. Then I caught the other KFOX signals as well.
FRANK43 10-01-07, 03:00 PM This is the response I got from KDBC when I inquired about showing Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy in HD
Sorry for the delay in replying to your questions. We do plan on
transmitting in HD all avail shows but it will be when we do our
technical core build out. This was slated for third quarter this year
but had to be delayed due to the loss of network programming for some of
our sister stations around the country. We have it in the budget again
next year and will know more as this year comes to a close. Thank you
for you interest in KDBC-TV and feel free to contact me directly at any
time if you have any other questions,
Sincerely,

cube799 10-01-07, 04:55 PM KVIA Seems to have finally fixed the problems they had yesterday. I had to watch parts of Desperate Housewives on the Analog Channel, but toward the end of the show there was very little skipping. At about this time I noticed that they turned off their Weather Channel, and Eventually it disappeared all together, The TV couldn't find it. The problems were still there when I watched Stargate Atlantis on The CW at midnight, there was skipping like every 10 minutes. Right now their weather channel is back and the skipping is gone.
KFOX TV is either still fixing their problem, or they don't know yet. Even their Guide isn't working.
I was trying to watch your channel HD OFF AIR he didn't understand ???,
Trying telling them it's OTA = Over The Air.
merchione 10-02-07, 08:58 AM "I'm 100 percent confident that we will have as compelling a HDTV lineup as DIRECTV," Melinda Witmer, Time Warner's chief programming officer, told TVPredictions.com last March.
Witmer added that Time Warner would have the capacity for 100 high-def channels by year's end. And Time Warner Cable CFO Landel Hobbs told an investors conference in June that the cable operator would have "virtually unlimited" capacity for high-def by year's end.
Time Warner Adding More HD Channels
San Antonio viewers will get more Starz in high-def.
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (October 1, 2007) -- Time Warner Cable is adding four more high-def channels in the San Antonio area, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
WTF HAPPEND TO US TWC ???????????
Email Melinda Witmer at TWC Corporate, the SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF PROGRAMMING OFFICER if you want more HD Channels!!!

Yeah I notices the Channel 14 change to 15-3 and 15-4, one TV did this automatically while the other I had to rescan the channels.
So channel 7 had some skipping? and I'm going crazy re-checking my antenna.. LOL.
I should log on here more frequently.
cube799 10-02-07, 04:32 PM KFOX is fixed now. They now say 14-1 and 14-2, the Station IDs are back, and the guide is back.
OMG I will have to do a re-scan on the TV again.. another 5 mins of my life gone.. LOL
Hopefully on one of the re-scans I find a new station..
Maybe this time telemundo SD will show...
FRANK43 10-04-07, 04:41 PM KVIA was off the OTA digital Wednesday night during prime time but seemed OK this morning. As I have said before what is going to happen when these stations have all these breakdowns and there is no analog to fall back on?
cube799 10-04-07, 06:38 PM I noticed KVIA was gone too, It came back at about 1 or 2 in the morning. I think they fixed whatever was broken this weekend. I really think it was their Multiplexer(Mux). In Simple English its the machine that takes the 4 Channels and puts them in one 6 MHZ channel. I think either it wasn't handling the compression right, or it was trying to use more than the close to 20 Megabits allowed on a digital channel. They probably were operating at a lower bitrate like 17 or 18 Megabits since the MUX broke sometime on Sunday. They more than likely couldn't convince whoever fixed it to do it at 1 or 2 in the morning when few people are watching so they did it during primetime. They should have at least waited longer and done it sometime other than primetime like at 6 in the morning today or tomorrow. Anyway KVIA Digital was working fine before they fixed this, so the could have waited to fix it.
Well, there's not much to see Wednesday, but I saw the full episode of pushing daisies and then changed the channel to 14 to watch some House.
So they went down after 8:00PM I presume.
Channel 13 has even more channels, they mirrored them to 30-X, my TV picked them up, the same 4 Channels, running at the same time!, are they preparing for something?
CANNON-FODDER 10-08-07, 09:02 PM I thought the 13._ channels were always broadcast on the RF channel 30 frequency, and if the PSIP (sp?) data was not right, some receivers would not re-map them to 13._ properly... Some receivers allow inputting the RF channel and then a sub-channel to directly tune channels not appearing in a scan - that is how I thought I was getting CW before they went official...

Earlier in the thread you said that you had to do a channel scan, because the channels on 15 had gone back to 14. If these channels showed up after that scan, then you may be getting the channels on 13, and the channels on 30 at the same time. I've had this happen before, and I fixed it by getting rid of both channels manually and adding the channel again manually. So, if do that then you will only get the channels on 13.
merchione 10-10-07, 09:04 AM This "El Paso HDTV" thread is useless all we have here is OTA crybabies...and not one TWC sub. Where are they at? where can people like me go to and complain about the worst HD provider in America?

I think because we prefer NOT to pay that lousy cable provider, maybe you should switch? you have other options you know.
For me, OTA is all I have, since I live in Juarez, Mexico's cable and sat companies are ages from broadcasting in HD.
where can people like me go to and complain about the worst HD provider in America?
Try whining and crying to the people you pay your money to - TWC - if you don't like their service.
cube799 10-11-07, 06:20 PM Not only that if you don't like it switch to DirecTV, or Dish if only for a while, to scare Time Warner Cable. If you do cancel Cable make sure to tell them why you canceled, "they don't have enough HD channels". you could even snowball them with this. First call them and ask when they're going to add more HD channels, after that if they don't want to tell you keep insisting and get mad. Some time during this call mention how many HD Channels DIRECTV has, You can find that information in this website in the HDTV Programming Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=34), and threaten to move to DIRECTV. After this you can even find an excuse to not cancel, like for example "I still have to buy the Dish And the HD Receiver" who knows, you could even get a discount. Make sure that if you call them, to be mad, or pretending to be mad, by the time you start demanding to know "when they're going to add more HD Channels" and to stay mad until the end of the call that way they will register your complaint or transfer you to a Manager, or someone in charge of Customer Retention. Who know they may even tell you when Time Warner El Paso is going to add more HD Channels. Also go to some of the other Threads like The Houston Cable one, or the Harlingen, TX one. I know Houston is adding more HD Channels, and Harlingen, TX is adding HD Channels too. How come Harlingen, TX is adding HD Channels, and El Paso Isn't? Aren't we bigger. Also Read this Freaking Thread before you say something stupid like "and not one TWC sub" , I Have read all of it and there are Some TWC subs here. I understand if you were mad When you said this, but Think Before You Post.
Mister B 10-12-07, 08:57 AM I just sent an e-mail to KTSM about the fact that the NBC Nightly News has not been in HD for the past two days. If it is a technical problem, I understand that happens, if some employee just can not bother to hit the switch, that is more discouraging.
Yes, I am one of those "OTA cry-Babbie's". I have tried both cable and satellite and believe me, I cry a lot louder when I am paying for a service and have continuous problems that when I am getting channels for free.
asterion 10-12-07, 10:20 PM Remember, too, that some of us cannot get Time Warner Cable. Time Warner Cable does not (or is it can not?) operate in New Mexico and someone else has already mentioned Mexico. I refuse to get Comcast as well. Way way too expensive, even before I started considering HD. I haven't upgraded my E* equipment because I'm hoping to be somewhere else (nothing against Las Cruces, but I want to get my degree and get a job already) by this time next year and I don't want to find myself stuck in a contract while moving. Besides, other than sports, there's not that much I want to watch that's in HD and most of what I want to watch anyway is not available OTA. (Quite frankly, I bought the TV for the NFL and most of the time I have no interest in the Monday night game.) And to some degree, I don't understand some of the things people care about. The news or a game show not being in HD doesn't seem like that big a deal to me personally. To each their own, of course.
asterion 10-14-07, 07:33 PM Wow, I'm glad I don't pay for KDBC because the last half-hour of this football game has been absolutely awful. Lots of interruptions, a large amount of time in SD, and several audio problems.
Wow, I'm glad I don't pay for KDBC because the last half-hour of this football game has been absolutely awful. Lots of interruptions, a large amount of time in SD, and several audio problems.
Yeah first they lost the HD feed, switched to SD, then like 10 mins blackout, then SD for another 10 mins then finally back to HD, but with bits of interruptions, I think they had either satellite or their own equipment problems.
FRANK43 10-15-07, 03:08 PM KDBC is blaming it on thier network feed, which I doubt very seriously since the networks have lot of backup equipment and engineers who know what they are doing. KDBC probably had local equipment failures that receive the network feed else why did they not even show local advertising. The must have lost a bunch of money on that.
KTSM had some HD problems yesterday, some colors were phased out, this was since Chuck and maybe 15mins during Heroes, you could clearly see the difference when they fixed it, I almost went and hit my TV on the side, but I saw that the Computer was also looking the same. The analog channel was fine.
Mister B 10-23-07, 06:31 PM KTSM has had more than a few problems. I have given up on seeing the Nightly News in HD. I emailed both the engineer and programming departments but have received no reply. For two weeks in a row the second half of "Journeyman" has been in SD as they fail to throw the switch after the 30 minute break to promote their local news and commercials. This is the kind of problems KDBC were having two years ago.
cube799 10-24-07, 05:02 PM I noticed the KTSM problems with Chuck and Heroes too, when I was channel surfing. They used to show the NBC Nightly News in HD for a long time, but for at least a week they have shown it in SD. I think this may have to do with the NBC Nightly News HD, not having the Letters, While the SD version does have the Captions. Also sometimes when I watch Conan, they forget to turn on the HD after the commercials, for about 5 minutes.
cube799 10-25-07, 01:40 AM Today my HDTV got the Remapping data for Channel 25-1. It's now sending this channel to 26-1, see
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/8185/1024072256kb3.jpg
It says KINT-HD, but it's still in 480i, and 4:3. :confused::confused:
I think this maybe a screw up at Univision El Paso, Or is this channel getting ready to go HD. I'm hoping for the last one, but I highly doubt they'll go HD.
Also they have guide data now.

I certainly hope so they go HD, at least they will be showing the "novelas' in HD, not like their Televisa conterpart. LOL
Mister B 10-27-07, 09:34 AM I can finally get KRWG-DT here in far east El Paso County. I have always enjoyed getting channel 22 analog as their schedule is slightly different from KCOS and they carry some shows on the weekend that channel 13 does not. The analog channel which comes from the Southern New Mexico fair grounds on the way to Deming was always a little snowy but watchable. For what ever technical reasons they did not want to put the digital channel out on that tower and have been transmitting off of a short tower on the campus of NMSU for the past four years. Now they have a tower on the top of Tortugus Mountain (know locally as A Mountain) at full power.
My antenna is nothing special, a Radio Shack 40 inch boom UHF only mounted at 20 feet. I did use 300 ohm flat twin lead to minimize loss although one must use stand-offs to keep it away from the metal mast.
Channel 22-1 is the same PBS-HD feed we get on 13-1. 22-2 is a SD copy of analog channel 22 (this is what I wanted) and 22-3 is a Spanish children's network called V-Me. All of these stations are actually on UHF 23.
I am not sure if this reception will be possible over all of El Paso and Juarez, it probably has a lot to do with the line of sight through the mountain passes between here and there.
FRANK43 10-29-07, 05:00 PM Did anyone notice that PBS changed to standard time Sunday and now all the vcr's and other items that use their signal to auto set the time are off by one hour? I emailed the engineers but have not heard anything back yet.
I think they forgot the new schedule for DST ending first Sunday of November instead of last of October..
