Well I was watching the 'ol tube TV, I changed to Ch. 7, they had SOV in Analog! IDIOTS!!! oh well... meaning the images on the analog channel looked stretched and missing info on the sides... tisk, tisk... they are almost there.. You could say that Analog is gone Feb 2009, but that's 6 months from now..

Will try to get a screen-shot with my TV tuner (analog), you'll laugh a bit..

Edit: Wait, either your screenshot is low quality or is just regular SD 16:9? those images don't look HD to me..

I Will try to watch it today..

I don't know what happened I saved the picture in Bmp then converted to PNG, but it still looks bad, maybe my tv card didn't record right, because this looked much better on my HDTV.

I woke up early to watch Good morning El Paso in HD, and the show looked much better than the 10 PM News. I think the 10 PM news might have problem with the lighting, or they haven't learned to adjust the cameras properly.

Warning click a your own risk, Bob Harp looks much older in HD!!!

The show just looked weird without the logo, And it looked even worse, when they turned on the Logo. It Was like 2 or 3 times its normal size, and it was half in the 4:3 area, and half in the 16:9 area. I put the analog channel for awhile and it had half the ABC 7 logo cut off. I also noticed that there was something wrong with the Weather, it was like it was in the middle of the screen in a 16:9 graphic and looked SD. I think they still need to upgrade it to HD. There was alot of HD on Good Morning El Paso, Most of the Local News stories were HD and the national stuff was cut to 16:9, or recorded in SD 16:9.

Hi,

Sorry to interject here, but this looks like the correct forum for this question.

I'm having problems finding the KCOS digital channels. I have a HDTV and have no problems getting all the commercial over the air El Paso stations (4-1, 4-2, 7-1, 7-2, etc...). I also receive KCOS in analog (albeit not a great signal, but watchable). However, I don't get anything on 13-1 or any other digital 13- channel. I also noticed on KCOS's website that 30- might be used, however, I get nothing there either.

I'm on the west side, up fairly high on the mountain, near Coronado CC. I just use a powered rabbit ear style interior antenna.

Can anyone help?

Thanks, Bill

I think KCOS may be having problems, because my signal has dropped to about 50%. It's normally at about 80% signal or more.

Also it seems that Kvia's real widescreen news may have fooled me into thinking it was HD, but it just looks really clear. I Posted the same pictures at the "Is Your local news HD?" Thread and they all say it's Widescreen. At Least this time they haven't said it's HD, as far as I know.

Now KVIA has hooked up the Weather system properly, and it does look alot like KTSM's. Here's some pictures of the the two weather systems:

Since your on the mountain, curious if you can pull in channels 22- KRWG, the PBS station from Las Cruces? (Having said that, they are currently off the air).

I still don't get KVIA. I hardly watch them anymore.
I watched for a few minutes last Thursday cause KTSM had football. The Network news at 530pm started in HD or widescreen, after a minute switched to 4:3 about a minute or so back in the tape, so they duplicated a story.

Since its raining this morning and I'm not playing golf, I tried watching GMA and its in 4:3 again. Is it really that hard to capture the network HD feed and to broadcast it?

Moved to another TV that gets 7-0 (instead of 7-1) via Dish. Watched 2 minutes of 8am local news. The pix appears to be the 16-9 widescreen cut to 4:3. The 2 "anchors" are cutoff on the edge of the screen with a wide gap taking most of the pix. The sound is out of sync. The taped piece on Converse was extremely blotchy - worst picture of any kind I've seen.

I'm not having a problem with KCOS. 100% signal with a roof antenna, but I am in the northeast and have visual on all transmitters. If you have apoor signal on analog, the digital might be to low to get a picture. With digital you either have a picture or you don't. There is no in between, so you signal maybe to low with the rabbit ears.

I sometimes just see KCOS with a black screen and the "KCOS in Full HD" bug in the bottom right, like they forgot to air anything or something.. my PC gets 6 KCOS channels:
13-1, 13-2, 13-3, 30-1, 30-2, 30-3, I try to delete de 30's but they get auto-added again, don't know hwy.

In other matters, Surprise surprise I was seeing the Indycar race in HD, it had a 720p feeling and I guess it was 720p, bit grainy but hardly any artifacts, being a fast moving event, mmm tough choice, 720p no artifact or 1080i plenty of artifacts?

I hope the Olympics were a good lesson learned for NBC and they get better on PQ for upcoming NFL..

These are all syndicated programs. The stations must purchase HD receivers and a method of recording HD for on-air playback.

KTSM is installing recievers and record equipment and should be showing some HD syndication soon.

Indeed, I haven't seen any gameshows or talkshows in HD yet, all of them are syndicated like FOX said, perhaps the main reason why not.

Hopefully the "first, live, local" station will be first at this also!

Hi
I've had an HDTV for almost a year now, enjoying all the over-the-air HD channels, but a couple of months ago I started having problems with channel 7.1. The image freezes every few seconds and I've noticed that this happens on every program in HD that is retransmited, not in live ones.
For example last weekend's Nascar race did not have any problems, but during the commercials, many of them presented this problem. Also all of the prime time shows look like this and is very annoying.
All the other HD channels look great (Except for the poor signal strenght of cbs)
Is it a problem with my HDTV set or my antenna?
Tnx for any comment.

@Rick074

I've noticed that channel 7 does that too sometimes. The weird thing is that when the picture breaks up like that it on all the channel 7 channels 7-1 to 7-4, but sometimes it only does it on the 7-1 channel. One more thing when this channel breaks up sometimes there are colored lines, or dots on the screen. The lines and dots are usually all one color.

@everyone else

Today I noticed that KVIA has sidebars now, for their News, and they say "KVIA HD" or "ABC7 HD" something like that. The important part is that the sidebars say HD, but the studio shot still don't look very clear.

Mmm, I finally sat down one Sunday, to watch all NFL games that I could, well I tunned to Ch 14, decent game, but don't really like either team, so I tunned to Ch. 4, what a HORRIBLE PQ, I mean, didn't CBS promised HD games all season? unless our "beloved" Ch 4 forgot to turn the HD on, I couldn't stand watching this game, even if it was a good game.

Tuned to Ch. 20 to see the same game, it was SoV SD, not a happy camper.

At 3PM no game on CH 4, Cowboys in Ch. 14, decent game, then some awesome game at 6PM at Ch. 9.

Does anyone know what new digital channels or HD we could be getting in El Paso? Also what happened to 14.3? This was supposed to be a new digital channel with programming like that of TV Land.

Were suppose to be getting channel 40 in digital soon, they already applied for DTV 41. Also channel 48 should be available in El Paso someday on DTV 47.

As For HD Univision should be in HD a long time from now, but only the people at the main network, know when. Every time someone at the Univision.com forums asks about HD, they don't get an answer. at the Digital TV forum there, about once a week someone asks about HD. Anyway I really don't care that much if this channel goes HD soon, as long as the Televisa Channel of the stars HD repeater from Juarez keeps broadcasting in HD.

Also Telemundo should eventually be available in HD. They already have an HD channel in Los Angeles, and hopefully one day they will have more HD channels.

I'm waitng for 14.3 too. wikipedia still says it should be available in 2008.

DrLar
10-09-08, 09:06 AM
But I hope Ch. 14 isn't sacrificing any bandwith to setup 14.3 right? Shows, NFL and MLB games look very good right now, I don't like them to look like NBC's

Still no news on Televisa's second HD channel right? I lost hope since they couldn't bring the Ch 5 HD to Juarez for the Olympics.... my bet is 2010 when the FIFA World Championship in that year come. Or maybe on the Winter Olympics..

I recently subscribed to Time Warner after many years as OTA only. I wanted more variety in programming and specifically stayed away from satellite due to the 2 year commitments. I may be moving into an apartment within the next two years and there is a lot more to consider in choosing a location besides a clear view to the southern sky.
Cable has improved considerably since the 36 snowy channels I remember from a few years back but I am surprised how little HD is offered. I get the 5 local HD channels and about 5 or 6 more. TNT and ESPN are the only ones I have ever heard of as Discovery is not the same channels that is in SD (very repetitive).
My question is does anyone have any information on more HD coming to Time Warner. They will just have to add more to stay competitive with satellite. I understand that they need to get rid of some of the analog channels or change to a system called "switched digital" to get more bandwidth. A few months back I recall reading on this thread that someone was writing the General Manager an this subject. Any information would be of interest.

I afraid Time Warner HD in El Paso is a joke. I personally received emails from Director of Communications of Time Warner Cable -Southwest Division- Paula Smith (PM me if you want her email address) this is what she had to say:

"Thank you for your email. I've forwarded your concerns to our Customer
Advocate who will be following up via phone. (NO CALLS)

In the interim, I wanted to respond to your request for more HD
programming... To make the best programming decisions we
continually work to balance the capacity of our cable plant with the
availability of programming options, including HD programming. We are negotiating agreements for carriage of additional HD programming and will be adding HD Showcase on Demand, a 100% High Definition mix of
drama, music and action sports, by the end of this month.
Should you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me
again."

That was almost 2 years ago. So Paula passed it on to some one else, naturally no one wants to try and answer questions with no answer....Connie Gonzalez TWC SW Division - Customer Advocate (PM me if you want her email address too) she had little else to say:

"Thank your for your interest in our High Definition programming. Time
Warner Cable is dedicated to providing more choices for our customers
and HD programming is a service which we intend to expand. At the
moment, we will not be able to add more HD channels in El Paso until we
first deploy Switched Digital Video, which is planned for sometime in
the 4th Quarter of 2008. We are in the process of increasing the
bandwidth space necessary to carry additional HD channels for all of
our systems. Once the Switched Digital Video has been deployed, digital
video will be sent in a more efficient manner and this will allow
additional bandwidth to provide more services to our customers, such as
additional HD channels. In compliance of the Must Carry Law, which is
a Federal Communications Commission requirement that cable television
systems must dedicate some of their channels to local broadcasting
stations, we reserve bandwidth as a result of Regulatory Trade
Commission agreements plus pending cable contracts.

I apologize for delayed response; we had to verify the information just
given with our Marketing Department and wanted to make sure that the
information we give you is accurate. While we regret the possibility of
losing you as a valued customer, we want to assure you that your concern
is of immense importance to us. We are constantly working on adding
more content to the service we provide and while there's a process to
add additional programming/channels, we appreciate your patience. If
you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at
956-425-7880 ext. 8851"

Well its the middle of Nov and no more HD? tisk-tisk TWC shame on you.
I switched to Directv HD since jun 08 and I'm never looking back, if TWC adds any more HD in El Paso I'm sure it wont be alot...come and follow me!!! 50 bucks to anyone that wants to sign up... PM me for details.

Somewhat off the topic going on right now, but since it deals w/ El Paso, I figured this would be a good spot.

I live in the 79936 zip code, specifically the apts by Vista Del Sol and Zaragosa. My apartment is on the east side of the complex, w/ my porch looking out to the east as well. Anyway I've been having issues trying to find a decent antenna to help me pick up OTA HD channels. I started off w/ a set of passive bunny ears. All I got was 9-1 to 14-1. I couldn't get 4 or 7 in HD. I returned them and picked up a Terk HDTVa antenna. I must have spent a good hour moving the antenna around to get 4 or 7 in HD, w/ no luck. Problem is I have a neighbor on the west side of me, I'm on the 2nd floor (of 3 floors), and there's just too much in between my apt and the mountain (i.e. other apts, walls, floors, etc)

Does anyone have any good suggestions for an antenna? I could mount an outdoor antenna on the rail of my patio, but I still don't have line of sight so I don't know if it'd be any good.

It may be difficult to get much signal through several sets of walls especially if there is "chicken wire" support in the stucco. You could try a larger unamplified outdoor type antenna inside if you do not mind looking at it. I would try to buy one somewhere with a good return policy as it may not work. I would also try those "bunny ears" out on the balcony to see if there was any signal bounce available off of the Hueco Mountains.
Be aware that next February channels 7,9 and 13 are returning to their original VHF frequencies while 14 will stay on channel 15 and 4 will stay on 18.
The Spanish stations also will not move.

Hello. I just want to ask if an HD newscast is being considered and also what happened to the third digital channel that KFOX was supposedly going to put on air? Thank you.

The answers to your questions are yes and hopefully in January. We are going to launch an HD newscast shortly after the first of the year we are just waiting on some equipment much of which is back ordered because as you can imagine every station in the country is looking to go HD. As to our second channel we are scheduled to start airing RTN a retro channel on January first.

Thank you for you email.

depending on where you live (you did not say) you could get by with rabbit ears or you may need an outside antenna. If you can see the transmitters on the mountain starting at the low end near downtown (kdbc and kcos) and going north to ranger peak (2 transmitters kivia and ktsm and just a bit farther north is kfox) you should be able to get all regular and sub channels.

Right now there are 3 Mexican HD channels on the Air.

11-1 TV Azteca 13 HD
20-1 TV Azteca 7 HD
32-1 Televisa Canal de las Estrellas HD

You should buy the Terk HDTVa indoor amplified antenna. They sell outdoor antennas at Radio shack, and at Wal-Mart.

Does anyone have trouble watching ABC in HD OTA at night? Everynight at 7pm when I watch Ugly Betty or Desperate Housewives, it looks as though the picture is freezing about every 2 seconds. The audio sounds fine, but it's just the picture that's freezing. What's weird is that the American Music Awards and Dancing with the Stars looks fine.

I've called KVIA 3 times now. Once, the lady that answered said they're waiting for some part and it'll fix it. The second time, the man said he didn't know what I was talking about and I was the only one who's ever called about that. The third time I called at night and the guy said he had to TVs and one of them was doing what I was describing. He said he didn't know what it could be but he'd address to someone in a memo. It's been about a month and the problem hasn't been resolved. I don't wanna miss Lost when it comes out in January.

I even went to Walmart to buy some signal booster but that didn't work. I'm thinking I might need an antenna... I'm not sure.
I didn't have this problem earlier in the year. I was watching Lost just fine, then suddenly this Fall KVIA in HD OTA doesn't look right. I wonder what happened.

I think you will notice that the problem only occurs on film-based material. Live TV and TV shot in digital format isn't affected. It is also unique to certain TV's. Of my 3 HDTV's, only one is affected.

Since it is film based, it almost certainly has to do with the "pulldown" to convert 24fps film material to 30fps for TV display. It's almost certainly a setup problem with their new HD equipment (it was fine before HD) and, let's face it, our TV techs are not the brightest in the land.

In their last update to the FCC, KTDO told the FCC they hope to have their digital station operational before the transition date. They were horribly delayed by Mexican coordination issues, and their tower is located in some park or something that has limited hours and limited ways to get equipment up there. Something like that.

My best estimate of Channel 48's situation is that they are currently only broadcasting from the low power translator K48IK located on the Franklin Mountains at 150KW. I do not believe they are using the full power 5000KW transmitter in Chaparral and thus are exempt from the digital switch at this time. They also have approval for digital broadcasts of a very low .15KW in El Paso and 1.09KW in Las Cruces. I do not believe the El Paso station is on. If anyone could confirm the Las Cruces broadcast that would be interesting.

I noticed yesterday that KFOX was testing the Retro Channel on 14-2. I never saw a station ID but it was an old episode of Kojack. Now they have gone back to the weather but at least they are testing. Original plans were to have RTN on 14-3 but I would prefer they just drop the weather on 14-2 and save the bandwidth. Their radar is interesting during summer thunderstorms but that is available on the computer.
Speaking of weather channels, 9-2 is completely off as of the last couple of days. It used to be rather good when they had national meteorologists but has become mostly repeats of the local forecast and traffic cameras.
Finally KDBC has managed to get stereo sound out of the America One network on 4-2. I actually like this channel mostly for "First Business" at 8:30each weekday and some of the travel shows.

WHAT!!!! Why don't ABC7 air it in HD too???It would interfere with the picture quality of the main channel. Lots of folks screamed in Kansas City about the "loss of [potential picture quality / bandwidth]" about the secondary weather channels. I guess we were spoiled there, as both WB and UPN were digital before the merge (and HD IIRC)...

The good news however: using an HD feed to down-convert into the digital 480p usually brings a huge upgrade in picture quality.

I really saw a huge improvement from the fuzzy, ringing, crap on the TWC SD channel when they finally flipped the switch during last week's Supernatural (albeit with only 2.5 minutes left in the show...)

the 2 Hours of Lost looked good, but sound was an issue, the volume of the character voices are so low, if you watched the cllip show the comments from the producers can be heard clearly while you had to volume up when the characters talked.

Okay, here is a dumb question which I know has probably already been asked. Why is it that a station (Ch. 14.1) will be in 4:3 picture mode when the "info" button tells me that it is 16:9? Is it that the station is to blame? Some channels automatically go to widescreen (Ch. 9.1 local news). Also, I don't understand why 22-1 is in widescreen while 22-2 is 4:3. Am I supposed to change the pic size or isn't this automatic? With all of the complaints here about the local stations, I am getting the feeling that is it the stations and not my TV. Lots of content is not available in widescreen. When that occurs, the station inserts black bars on the left and right to preserve the aspect ratio and then upconvert it to HD.

There's only enough bandwidth for one HD feed per channel, thus 22-1 is in HD but 22-2 is in SD.

+1 I have emailed KDBC many time but never got an answer lately. a year ago it was they needed more equipment for syndicated shows. They have new owners even though they still show Pappas at the end of the news casts so maybe they will get more money for syndicated shows. This extension to June 12 sucks, ties up money stations could use for doing this. I'm tiered of all the promos put them on analog signal so those with digital don't haave to watch them.

I find this very interesting:

When Congress postponed the mandatory transition to digital TV until June, it also gave stations the option to stick to the originally scheduled date of Feb. 17.

That means the shutdown of analog signals, which broadcasters had hoped would happen at nearly the same time nationwide, could now unfold in a confusing patchwork of different schedules.

Lawmakers wanted to address concerns that many households that receive TV signals through an antenna are not prepared for the switch. They were also mindful that a government fund has run out of money to subsidize digital converter boxes for older TVs.

Dozens of stations around the country now say they are going to take advantage of the option to drop analog broadcasts this month.

Many others are on the fence. The total number is likely to be in the hundreds, a substantial chunk and maybe even a majority of the country's 1,796 full-power TV stations.

The House voted Wednesday to delay the mandatory shutdown until June 12. The Senate passed the measure unanimously last week, and the bill now heads to President Barack Obama for his signature.

You didn't mention where you live. KCOS has been digital for a couple of years. 13-1 carries HD programing, 13-2 carries the digital version of the old analog signal and 13-3 carries the analog. There is also a signal but no programming on 13-4

I live in Mesa Hills, the top of Mesa Hills Drive. All other stations come in pretty well, just seems that KCOS is still rather weak. If anything, I may be too close to the transmitter. I have a amplified antenna in the attic (otherwise it would blow away up here, LOL) I only get just the one channel 13 now, no others.

It is possible that it is your line of sight to the antenna, I have set up some systems in that general area and KCOS is always a problem, if I am not mistaken, and someone can correct me if I am wrong, I believe the KCOS antenna is the southern most antenna on the mountain, closest to scenic drive. Also check out www.antennaweb.org, you can input you address and some other information and it can help determine what kind of antenna and which direction to point it in for the best results for each station. Hope this helps.

Channel 13 has announced several times that they will run on lower power, but I was thinking the regular analog channel, it's confirmed I'm getting very snowy signal on this channel but on the 3 digital ones is fine..

I also thinking that all the other locals will reduce power to analog if they aren't shutting it down completely after Feb 17... maybe except 26 an 65, they don't want to lose all Juarez Viewers.

They even did a story about their new Switcher. The weird things is that whenever something isn't HD, there is a black bar at the bottom of the screen.

They also said that they're not switching off their analog signal until the new transition date June 12th.

KTSM has told the FCC that they plan to turn off analog on the 17th.

KTSM might want to wait until they get rid of this crackling problem they have before shutting down the analog transmitter. Some weeks ago I noticed intermittent sound pops during prime time.

Tonight when I tuned in at 7:00 PM I noticed them again. They got worse and worse until it sounded like someone was frying bacon in my TV. I have three tuners (a Vizio TV, an Insignia Digital to Analog converter, and a PC capture card) all of them had the same problem to varying degrees. I like bacon but this has got to go.

It appears that KCOS has made the same changes that most PBS stations around the country are doing. The HD channel (13-1) is now the local PBS station and the same as the old analog channel 13. Just like the commercial networks, some shows are in HD and others are in SD. Yesterday, the transitions were seamless between local inserts and the HD news at 6:00pm.
As mentioned above all of the sub-channels are off. They may add some new sub-channels in the future, most PBS stations offer Create or Spanish children's programming.

Just a heads up for anyone interested in ATT Uverse. Just because their website says your eligible, and even if customer support says you eligible, there is no guarantee. I was overseeing an installation in a new housing area on the west side this week, and all was going well until the ATT technician checked the signal on the line. It was no where near the strength needed for Uverse. So no Uverse at that house.

I noticed them this morning. Channels (4,7,9,14) are now listed in Dish's guide as HD channels. The channels are mapped to the #-0s slots on the guide.

So with the Dish VIP receiver and OTA, can now record 3 hidef network programs at same time (if only there was that much content worth TIVO'ing).

We don't get local news, we get mostly Mexico news now adays, some EP and a little Las Cruces. If you are in NM, you get zero NM news (as in state news).
Local stations use protectionist laws to stay in business (why you can't bring in out of area stations). Local stations are like newspapers, obsolete and inconsequential.

This is the link:
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101308672&formid=387&fac_num=36916

On there it says this:
Exhibit 2
Description: EXHIBIT 2

APRIL 2009 UPDATE-
AS OF APRIL 8, 2009, 90% OF THE EQUIPMENT NECESSARY TO CONSTRUCT KTDO'S DTV FACILITY IS ON SITE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE TRANSMISSION LINE. TOWER PERSONNEL AND TECHNICIANS HAVE BEEN SECURED BY KTDO FOR THE INSTALLATION AND ARE PROCEEDING WITH THE CONSTRUCTION WITH THE AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT.

ON TUESDAY, APRIL 14 2009, KTDO WAS NOTIFIED VIA TELEPHONE CALL BY ONE OF ITS EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS THAT THE TRANSMISSION LINE, A KEY COMPONENT OF THE DTV FACILITY, WILL NOT BE DELIVERED IN THE TIME. THE MANUFACTURER IS CURRENTLY ATTEMPTING TO FIND A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE ORIGINAL LINE. KTDO HAS IMPRESSED UPON THE MANUFACTURER THE CRITICAL NEED FOR THE TRANSMISSION LINE AND THE PRESSING DTV TRANSITION DEADLINE. UNFORTUNATELY, KTDO IS ENTIRELY DEPENDANT ON THIRD-PARTY VENDORS AND MANUFACTURERS FOR THE SUPPLY OF NECESSARY EQUIPMENT FOR THE DIGITAL FACILITY, AND THE LACK OF A TRANSMISSION LINE IS ENTIRELY BEYOND KTDO'S CONTROL AT THIS POINT. KTDO IS CONTINUING TO EXPLORE OPTIONS FOR ALTERNATIVE TRANSMISSION LINES, AND TAKING EXTRA STEPS TO FIND THIS CRITICAL PIECE OF EQUIPMENT.

KTDO WILL UPDATE THIS STATUS REPORT AS THE SITUATION EVOLVES, AND WILL REQUEST AN EXTENSION OF THE JUNE 12TH CONSTRUCTION DEADLINE IF IT BECOMES NECESSARY.

IN ADDITION, KTDO WILL FILE SHORTLY A MINOR MODIFICATION TO ITS DIGITAL CONSTRUCTION PERMIT TO CORRECT THE TOWER INFORMATION. IN OBTAINING AN STA FOR PRE-TRANSITION OPERATIONS, KTDO RECENTLY DISCOVERED THAT THE TOWER SPECIFIED IN ITS CONSTRUCTION PERMIT -- FCC FILE NO. BMPCDT-20080612AAP -- IS FOR AN ADJACENT TOWER AT THE SAME SITE. ACCORDINGLY, KTDO WILL NEED TO MODIFY ITS DTV CP TO ADJUST THE ASR NUMBER, HEIGHT, AND COORDINATES FOR THE NEARLY IDENTICAL TOWER THAT WILL BE EMPLOYED. THAT APPLICATION WILL BE FILED SHORTLY AND WILL REFLECT THE ACCURATE FINAL DTV FACILTIES FOR THE STATION, WITH WHICH THE STATION WILL OPERATE POST-TRANSITION. ACCORDINGLY, THE PARAMETERS CONTAINED IN THE FORTHCOMING MINOR MOD APPLICATION SHOULD SUPERCEDE THE INFORMATION PREVIOUSLY LISTED IN DTV TABLE OF ALLOTMENTS AT APPENDIX B.

i looks like we will have to wait a while for Telemundo digital. :(

Mmm I wonder what kind of "transmission line" they use? fiber perhaps? but seems unlikely, there are many providers that can do fiber, must be something really special...

(I think they wanted to beat this deadline, not so much the June 12)

Trip in VA

Not that kind of transmission line, I think they're referring to the feed line which goes up the side of the tower. It's a pipe that feeds the signal from the transmitter at the bottom of the tower to the antenna at the top.

Okay, not sure where else to ask. Recently I switched from a Dynex television 32in HD LCD. I was receiving all my signals fine with the built in tuner and my HD RCA bunny ears.

Well, I upgraded TV for a Samsung 40in LCD HD. Now for some reason KVIA is coming up poorly. The signal on the monitor is showing full strength but the channel is not coming in clear.

The issue I'm seeing is the video on the screen freezes then speeds up quickly then slows down and does it over and over. 7.1 is the only channel doing this, 7.2-7.4 are coming in clear with no issues and all the other stations are coming in clear with no issue either.

The video is not pixalated or boxing at all, the HD is coming in, but just freezes and speeds up quick. The audio never skips or shuts down, but the video issues.

I called KVIA, they claim all is well, I called Samsung, they say it's a station issue. I tend to agree with Samsung since the issue is only on one station.

Any help would be appreciated. Do I need a stronger antenna or what? KVIA tells me I live in the right spot for just bunny years and don't require a roof antenna, would is suggest?

Mister B
04-26-09, 09:30 AM
I have been monitoring the digital TV signals here in El Paso since they first came on in 2003 and that is a new description of a signal problem to me. It sounds as though the TV is loosing signal and then storing the signal and trying to catch up, something like pauses during a download on the computer.
I assume you have tried adjusting your rabbit ear antenna however if you are not having issues with 7-2, 7-3 or 7-4 you must be getting good reception.
If all else fails, one ray of hope would be that June 12th KVIA will stop using channel 17 for digital TV and go back to VHF channel 7. That would mean a whole new transmitter and such and hopefully work out this bug.

FRANK43
04-26-09, 11:30 AM
First I would do a rescan for channels just in case the tuner is off. If you still have the dynex, just to troubleshoot, I would split you rabbit ears cable in to two cables and hook 1 up to the dynex and the other to the samsung when this problem is occurring. If there is no problem on the dynex and a problem on the samsung then there is a problem with the samsungs processing of the signal it is getting for some reason.I would take the samsung back for a replacement.

Well actually I forgot to mention something rather important and I do apologize. The issue only occurs when ABC is on national coverage. Like when the silly soaps and The view, Regis are on the problem never happens.

During KVIA news the issue never happens either, until they run B-Roll during the newscast. Also during shows like Brothers and Sisters, Grey's etc.... that's the only time it happens. During NBA or Dancing with the Stars it does not occur. I don't understand why shows like that are effected but nothing else is.

Such as "This Week" is on KVIA and it's coming out great. However, when commercials come on, some of them give me that problem while some don't.

darkbasic

speed301
04-26-09, 11:49 PM
I have a Vizio and this problem is common. The station probably isn't causing but the network is because of the way they process the signal to allow an extra 30 seconds or so of commercials. It's not a problem with older TVs or TVs that can detect this processing and filter it out.

I have a HD capture card in my computer as well, and when I play back ABC videos on the computer I can see diagnostic information from the saved file and sure enough it shows the frame rate is jumping around between about 40 fps and 60 fps.

I just relocated to the Indianapolis area and the local ABC station doesn't have this problem in prime time. I guess the problem isn't present on all stations.

Where on the website do you find this? I've been checking for news about HD updates for a while now and haven't found anything. BTW, we have about the fewest number of HD channels in the nation. We need to push to get a lot more.

For darkbasic:

Up until the beginning of the year, I was able to get digital/HD equivalents of all of the analog channels directly on my TV thru the cable. Since then, the majority have been moved to higher scrambled channels that the TV does not get. TWC is looking to make money off renting the set-top boxes. There are a couple channels that bounce around, apparently due to switched digital video which allows TWC to only send the signal to those actually watching. A couple of these that change constantly are VS and FOOD. You never know what will pop-up on the 79-### thru 81-### channels until you re-scan.

Just last week they were nice enough to unscramble all the music channels (102-###) so now you can own a $1000-$2000 radio.

Since I can't post a URL yet, I'll describe how to get there:

On the front page there is a bar with links that have drop down menus. Go to Support and then click on Account and Billing. On the right side of that page are three topics. The third one (the bottom topic) is Info and Policies. In that section are links. Click the 7th link called Channel Change. On that page click the link that says El Paso. A pdf file should come up.

Hope that's not too complicated.

On my usual Scan to find KTDO 47-1 I found another 3 channels, 22-1, 22-2, 22-3, are those PBS stations? I didn't tune into them long enough to see what they were, first it's supposed to be HD, the second the SD version, the 3rd it's the V-me one.

But I was tunning 13-1 and it had very different programming..

But yesterday the 3 were offline, I had a no-signal from them, 13-1 was on OK.

22's are the PBS statios from NMSU; they've been there awhile but maybe not strong enough to pick them up your way. In Las Cruces, i get almost 100 strength signal from them, but i can't pick up 13-1.
22-3 is V-me.

KTDO 48 had a crawler saying to be ready for the transition and call a local number, but the jerks are clearly not ready, does anyone know if they will get an extension because it seems they will not be ready, I think they should be punished for not being ready and not get an extension, and go off the air so they get the digital signal ASAP JERKS
So we should contact the FCC and tell them to punish KTDO for procrastinating they had a lot of time!

I do not understand Spanish ,so do not keep up with which channel belongs to specific networks, but will try to answer the above question since no one else has replied. I am not sure which of the Juarez channels are the above mentioned but I can receive all of them here in far east El Paso County so I believe they carry a strong signal in the entire area. There are only digital versions of Juarez channels 11, 20 and 32 and they seem to have a lot of problems such as frequent break-ups or being just a stretched version of the analog copy. If you point a proper VHF/UHF antenna at Juarez I am sure you will find your channel of interest.

I Can get all the Juarez HD channels, and I'm in the Lower Valley by Riverside High School. Canal de las Estrellas HD has the strongest signal at about 80%. The TV Azteca HD channels have signals of about 60%.

The data you see for it on the website is how the station is currently transmitting its digital signal (as far as mapping to 48-1 and in 480i, etc).

Same! I did it yesterday and it's up..

I read on the local news Yesterday, KTDO is not going full digital this Friday due to their problems with the antenna, apparently the FCC gave them a few weeks (or days) to do so.

All the other channels however are going digital, a large population of Juarez vievers will have half their channels cut off.

I know that some people have HDTVs and cable but I think the vast majority doesn't, considering the converters here are about US $70 and no coupons to get them, local electronic vendors are overpricing them even if they don't sell them hoping the people will spend two weeks pay for a converter..

CH 4 KDBC

KDBC has been all digital since June 2, because of equipment problems.

http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101315508&formid=910&fac_num=33764

KDBC-TV HAS EXPERIENCED AN EQUIPMENT FAILURE IN ITS ANALOG TRANSMITTER, WHICH HAS LED THE STATION TO TERMINATE ITS ANALOG BROADCAST OPERATIONS. SPECIFICALLY, THE STATION HAS BLOWN A TUBE IN THE TRANSMITTER. THE STATION'S ENGINEERS ESTIMATE THAT IT WOULD COST $3,000 - $4,000 TO OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT TUBE, WHICH IF IT COULD BE DELIVERED IN TIME, WOULD AT BEST ALLOW THE ANALOG STATION TO CONTINUE OPERATING IN ANALOG FOR A FEW MORE DAYS UNTIL ALL ANALOG BROADCASTING CEASES ON JUNE 12TH. FURTHERMORE, KDBC LICENSE, LLC, ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER COMMONLY OWNED LICENSE COMPANIES, IS PRESENTLY IN BANKRUPTCY AND IN THE MIDST OF BEING SOLD TO THE LICENSEE'S CREDITORS. ACCORDINGLY, REPLACING THE TUBE FOR A FEW EXTRA DAYS OF ANALOG OPERATION IS NOT A VIALBE OPTION FOR THE LICENSEE.

THAT SAID, HOWEVER, THE STATION HAS RECEIVED JUST 17 CALLS ABOUT THE OUTAGE SINCE THE EQUIPMENT FAILURE, AND THE LICENSEE ESTIMATES THAT THE NUMBER OF FOLKS WATCHING THE STATION'S ANALOG SIGNAL OVER-THE-AIR IS NEGLIGIBLE. IN ADDITION, THE STATION HAS BEEN BUILT AND OPERATING IN DIGITAL FOR YEARS, AND THE CABLE SYSTEMS ARE ALL FED VIA THE DIGITAL STREAM OR BY ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY METHODS.

MORE IMPORTANLY, TERMINATING THE ANALOG OPERATION PRIOR TO JUNE 12TH IS IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST AS IT WILL ENABLE THE STATION TO RAPIDLY COMPLETE THE RELOCATION OF ITS DIGITAL ANTENNA TO THE TOP-MOUNT POSITION ON THE TOWER. CURRENTLY, THE STATION HAS A CONSTRUCTION PERMIT AUTHORIZING THE STATION TO MOVE THE DTV ANTENNA TO THE TOP-MOUNT POSITION ONCE THE ANALOG OPERATIONS TERMINATE AND THE ANALOG ANTENNA IS REMOVED. WHILE THE STATION HAS AN STA FOR PHASED-IN OPERATIONS AUTHORIZING IT TO CONTINUE ITS SIDE-MOUNTED DTV OPERATIONS AFTER JUNE 13TH, THE STATION HAS A TOWER CREW AVAILABLE TO BEGIN REMOVAL OF THE ANALOG ANTENNA IMMEDIATELY. THEREFORE, THE REQUESTED STA FOR THE TERMINATION OF ANALOG SERVICE IS IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST AS IT WILL ACTUALLY EXPEDITE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE FULL, MAXIMIZED DTV SERVICE BY KDBC-DT.

JUNE 2009 UPDATE:

AFTER SECURING A REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION LINE FROM AN ALTERNATIVE VENDOR, KTDO HAS NOW COMPLETED THE CONSTRUCTION OF ITS POST-TRANSITION DTV FACILITIES AND IS IN THE FINAL STAGES OF TESTING FULL POWER OPERATIONS. THE STATION'S ENGINEERS HAVE OVERCOME SIGNIFICANT HURDLES TO CONSTRUCT THE STATION AT A TIGHTLY CONTROLLED TOWER SITE WITH LIMITED ACCESS FOR EQUIPMENT AND MATERIEL. DESPITE THE RECENT GRANT OF AN EXTENSION OF THE UNDERLYING CONSTRUCTION PERMIT, THE STATION EXPECTS TO COMMENCE FULL POWER DTV OPERATIONS IN ADVANCE OF THE JUNE 12TH TRANSITION DATE.

AS NOTED IN THIS UPDATED STATUS REPORT, KTDO HAS RECENTLY FILED A MINOR MODIFICATION TO ITS DIGITAL CONSTRUCTION PERMIT IN ORDER TO CORRECT CERTAIN TOWER INFORMATION. IN OBTAINING AN STA FOR PRE-TRANSITION OPERATIONS, KTDO DISCOVERED THAT THE TOWER SPECIFIED IN ITS CONSTRUCTION PERMIT -- FCC FILE NO. BMPCDT-20080612AAP -- IS FOR AN ADJACENT TOWER AT THE SAME SITE. ACCORDINGLY, KTDO MUST MODIFY ITS DTV CP TO ADJUST THE ASR NUMBER, HEIGHT, AND COORDINATES TO REFLECT THE CORRECT TOWER. AS KTDO CANNOT ELECTRONICALLY FILE A LICENSE TO COVER THE CONSTRUCTION PERMIT UNTIL THE PENDING MODIFICATION IS GRANTE, ZGS RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS EXPEDITED PROCESSING OF THIS MINOR CHANGE.

FINALLY, THE PARAMETERS CONTAINED IN THE PENDING MINOR MOD APPLICATION SHOULD SUPERCEDE THE INFORMATION PREVIOUSLY LISTED IN DTV TABLE OF ALLOTMENTS AT APPENDIX B.

Poor Juarez viewers (and few El Paso-ans), do you know they overpricing the converter in Juarez? (about $US 67). Many people can't go to El Paso to buy one and the cheapest one is $45-50 US, that'/s 1/2 price of a full TV set (I never understood why it costs more than a DVD box).

At least they gonna lose Univision and Telemundo and some like to watch sports on the american channels, some Basketball fans will miss out on the NBA finals, talk about timing..

Well I would say that the transition proved to be a nightmare so far for KVIA which I might say seems to been having the worse issues moving into DTV. I noticed my video quality on the channel got worse. Before I would see freezing and restarting of television shows on the network and now it's a constant jumpy stream of video looking like it's in slow frame rate.

It's also looking like that on DirecTV, looks horrific as I watch Kimmell on DirecTV, looks the same on HD signal. Yikes KVIA.

Also 13.1 and 13.8 and 13.9 but there's only a video on 13.1. KRWG channel 22.1 (HD),22.2 (SD) and 22.3 (VME) are alive and well even though they are on the side lobe of my roof top antenna. Channel 4.1 and 4.2 are good strong signals. Channel 14.1 and 14.2 there Retro Network are alive and strong. Also receiving a number of stations from Mexico. I'v been having this same problem with 7.1 and was hoping that with the transition last weekend the problem would be solved. But no such luck. The problem remains the same. So I've been avoiding channel 7.1 at all. Hope they fix it soon, because they have very good shows. I have a Magnavox HDTV. It's hard to think that the mexican TVAzteca HD channels are better that KVIA HD. :(

06-15-09, 11:49 PM
it's actually not that hard to think that the Mexican TV Azteca channels have better HD quality because TV Azteca is a very rich network and its feed usually comes straight from Mexico City and KVIA can't compare with that. By the way does anyone know if we are ever going to be able to watch Ch. 22 from Las Cruces in El Paso??

The only HD on Azteca 7 (20-1) is the News (in-studio only), some occassional Soccer games, once a year the Superbowl and some Olympic events. The big channel from Azteca HD is Azteca 13 (11-1) morning shows, soap operas, news, etc.

Channel 22 (KWRG) has a nice documentary on the transition and building of their antenae: http://krwg-tv.org/almanac/AA_217.html

The antenae is located on top of A(ggie) Mountain, which is east of I-25 and the campus. A mountain is only 1/2 the height of the Organ and Franklin Mountains so I'd guess you won't be able to get the channels east of them. I had trouble getting KDBC 4 on Sunday PM on my Toshiba HDTV but yet I was able to get it on the Samsung in the other room. Also, I was also able to get it on my Phillips HD-DVR. It was weird as I was able to get full strength earlier in the day. Knowing how that station is so poor, it made me wonder if the station was having problems. All TV's are on a HDTV Antenna with a amplifier. I live up next to the mountain in Mesa Hills. Also, KVIA was off and on for a day or so. I have notice in the last few days that KVIA has resumed broadcasting on both physical channels 7 and 17. This had been predicted on the national channel change thread on this forum. The signal quality is about the same on both frequencies for me here in Montana Vista but it would be interesing to hear some reception reports for Las Cruces or Alamogordo. The theory was that 17 is stronger. I can not imagine that KVIA want to pay double electric bills forever so more changes could be in the future.

West Las Cruces: Both channels 4 & 7 get worse by the day. Both of them keeping breaking up several times a day, 4 sometimes several times an hour. The picture pixelizes, the sound is like its in a metal box, and then the picture is gone to a solid color screen. This happens on OTA, Dish HiDef and Dish StdDef, so my conclusion is it is them.
The result is it makes me change the channel.

I am not sure what could be the problem in West Las Cruces. I have very little interruption of signal here in Montana Vista. I went to NMSU many years ago so am at least familiar with the reception patterns up there. West Las Cruces was always more favorable for reception from El Paso than the east or northern parts of town.
According to the FCC site, KVIA has a digital translator on channel 41 near the LC airport (used to be 57 analog) and KDBC has a new digital translator on channel 20 on the hill near I-25 and highway 70 where God's Learning Channel 30 is located. KDBC used to be on 61 analog near the airport. Are you sure you are getting these signals from El Paso or on the translators? Maybe one or the other signal would be more favorable in your location.
As far as the Dishnetwork, I have a friend here in El Paso who uses their service and there are frequent break-ups. This seems to be a problem with them all over the country on local channels and is very difficult to get resolved.

Considering KCWF-CA's channel 20 permit is for an analog signal and not a digital one, I'd assume tcutty's not watching that.

I stand corrected on the channel 20 issue. Also, there is a 20 analog in Juarez. It is not one of their strongest stations but it must cause some interference in parts of Las Cruces.

I know this is mostly OTA folks, but does anyone know if on Tuesday night Time Warner Cable really had a massive outage, all our systems are down, you are lucky to have ANY channel?

Just 3 of the last four weeks we cannot get either "Eureka!" or "Warehouse 13" on SyFy (which is a SDV channel). I figured that I might just be in a neighborhood which does not watch SyFy, but TWC's SDV could be lousy as well.

They encrypted Syfy--you can only get it thru the set-top box now. I missed recording an episode of Eureka when they first switched. Luckily, it was shown the next Friday before the newest episode.

Would have been nice if they would have told us, but then they don't tell us about anything--even took down the channel update part of their site (at least for El Paso).

I wonder if KFOX, channel 14 would consider adding the Fox News Network as one of their sub channels... like 14.2? I, for one, would sure watch it! Currently I use Fox Nation at internet http://www.thefoxnation.com/home to see their news.

I rescanned the USB AverTV receiver on my computer yesterday afternoon and found channel 9.2 was now available.

Yeah, my TV auto-tuned 9.2, didn't like it much, I don't recommend it.. more of 7-4 IMO... almost same things and horrible SD..

Lately channel 4 seems to experience a lot of difficulty. There signal disappears sometimes for seconds at a time.

+1 Lots of pixilation and I am only 9 miles straight line from the towers. Only showing about 88 % signal where others are 95 to 100%. They don't seem to answer emails either. I wish Bram Watkins was back in charge. Terrible management.

I have noticed several postings regarding weak reception or pixilization on channel 4 (RF 18) lately. Oddly, here in Montana Vista I have not observed any such problems with a Winegard HD7082P antenna nor have my neighbors with more modest outdoor antennas.
In reading post about other cities here on this forum I often hear mention of situations where broadcast towers do not radiate an equal amount of signal in all directions. Often nulls are mentioned. I wonder if such a phenomenon could be the case with channel 4. It would be interesting to get a reception report from someone else on the far east side.
It is sad the CBS affiliate for a city this size is so low budget. I watched their local news for the first time in months recently. I reminds me of a cable only community access channel broadcast. The worst part was that as a background shot when they give the predicted high temperature for El Paso, they still show a scene of downtown featuring the International H_tel rather than the newly remodeled DoubleTree.

The company that recently bought the station from bankrupt Papas has evidently decide to not put any money into the station. They don't even have a sports person. They do have TVGOS program guide signal for those of us that have equipment that use TVGOS. Maybe they will put some money into they station when the upcoming fall season starts. CBS has great primtime shows. Since this is an OTA forum and I'm sure many want to record shows. Dish Has a OTA HD recorder available at sears online. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_05757709000P

I've had this unit since December 2008 and I love it. Suposedly will be available in sears stores sometime in October. You can also get it at www.dishdepot.com for $269 and free shipping.

Looks like KVIA fixed there HD picture and no audio problem. I noticed it yesterday but it must have been happening 2 Sundays ago since I watched Defying Gravity from August 30th and the problem was on that show. The problem seemed fixed on The View this morning.

It appears that channel 4-2 has switched from the America One Network to "This" Network. The picture and sound quality is much better, possibly the best sub-channel in the area. The content seems to be mostly older movies. A quick "google" will find the national schedule.
Also, they did not switch to Mynetwork at 6:00 pm as was the usual case. This would not be the first time they forgot to hit the button though. Possibly they have lost that network affiliation also.

I hope not. I was actually excited to watch Smackdown tonight, and it never came on. :(

It seems to me that 4-2 has switched to THIS TV, permanently!! It has now been 3 days that they have not switched to My Network TV programming!! I Would like to see KDBC or some other Local Channel add the Accuweather SubChannel (http://www.accuweather.com/local-television/).

I flipped past channel 4-2 yesterday evening about 6:15 PM and they were showing MyNetwork programming. They have always been bad about throwing the switch late so if you want to see one of their shows a bit of patience may be required.
I just checked the national schedules of This and MyNetwork. It appears that Monday through Friday MyNetwork would evenly take out a movie on This from 6 PM to 8 PM and MyNetwork does not have a schedule for the weekend. Attention Scifi fans, This has Stargate SG-1 on Sunday evenings.

I live in west Las Cruces and recently decided to drop my overpriced Comcast cable TV. I bought a Philips powered antenna from Walmart and placed it by a window. My reception is fairly good, I am using a Motorola digital converter box to my analog TV.

Would I get better reception if the antenna was outside? I have a TV wall jack that connects to the roof for a Dish TV antenna that I used in the past. Can I hook up an antenna to this? Is there anywhere I can find a list of TV channels that I should be able to receive in my area. And one last question, I have many channels that are in Spanish but display "English" in the channel info box. Is it possible to get these in English??

Many thanks for any assistance ............Ray

You will definitely get better signal with an outside antenna. If the cable is still there from the Dish Satellite it will work just fine. What El Paso channels you get will be dependent on where you live in LC and your line of site to the Antennas on the mountains here. They are all in about the same place give or take a few degrees.
