DM2006RI 03-06-09, 10:11 PM On 2/17/09 WNAC changed channels from 54 to WPRI's old analog signal 12. WNAC has an out put power of 26kw and has approval from the FCC to increase the power to 30kw on 6/12/09. WPRI is currently at 18kw and has applied to the FCC to increase to 30kw. We have found some issues with TV's and converter boxes that would not see the change after a rescan. If this happens a reset to factory default and rescan will help with this issue. I have attached two maps of our coverage as you can see the WNAC coverage has increased dramatical from what the analog was.
Thanks, I was trying to figure out why I lost the channel on my Directv receiver (with OTA capability) -- I did a rescan and it's all set now.
brenden77 03-07-09, 09:08 AM Thanks, I was trying to figure out why I lost the channel on my Directv receiver (with OTA capability) -- I did a rescan and it's all set now.
I had rescanned right after the change over, and ended up losing the channel again... so i entered it manually.. hopefully it's here to stay. I'm getting tired of my shows not recording on the DVR.
comp4pod 03-09-09, 01:14 PM brenden77, how can you add an OTA channel manually with a directv receiver? I have a HR20-700 and don't know of any way of doing that.

I'm sorry, i wouldnt know. I have Dish Network.
JamesF in NK 03-09-09, 10:50 PM Curious why one can only program a DVR for no more than 7 days out from present time. As a frequent traveler, it would sure be nice to program out more than a week (notwithstanding series programming options). I wonder if this limitation (along with the lack of ability to program one's DVR from a remote location (via the Internet)) will ever change.

Amy has already stated that Remote DVR functions are being tested....SO sometime in the future we will have it....As far as the week in advance, not sure, I am guessing that the software companies thought that this was the best length of time where changes in the schedule were usually "locked" in. The 7 day rule I believe is a "standard" that many companies use.
sbmurphy 03-10-09, 12:01 AM not to pick anyone
at one point cox onscreen guide went out 2 weeks that was in the days when we had star sights which went out 2 weeks also Tivo goes out two weeks but the box 1 are to expencive 2 need a phone line 3 the hard drives always seem to die me. all thought am not crazy about our guides featues cox as better built dvr but I do wish we could do things like check our cox email, check local movie listing and pay our cable bill and phone bill(cox digital phone) through the box. other systems have this along with having the ability to send you personal bill reminders and important info throught your settop box i would not change my cable co i might bi*** and complain but after looking at verizon they charge way to much for there service and cox has better custumer service. I have made a few comments about verizon in the past it is that I want some of the features verizon has and some of the features time warner cable has such as the ability to pay your cable bill through the set top box,tv caller ID, ect hope cox gets therse features soon oh by the way I seen i ad for TV caller id awsome. now I only hope we get Tivo interface or a better guide two if you deleate something off the dvr your out of luck tivo has a feature if deleate something you can restore the program you deleated by mistake. i can not begain to tell how often i deleated something by mistake. and are they working on finding a way to add a 2nd hard drive? I see the hook ups on the back of the dvr but I know they do not work
LawrenceWelkMH 03-13-09, 01:01 PM Hi amy i was just wondering if you have anymore info regaring the Caller Id on tv launch date i spoke to rose marry at cox she is the one who told me about the March 17 launch date for ri i was just wondering if that is the day Caller id will launch or wil it be on march 30th the other question i wanted to ask will the yes network ever come to ri im not a yannke fan but my setpfather is so i would be happy for him if it came on his behalf i heard a rummor that is was sposued to come last year but is never came if you could find out about these question that i posted about the caller id on tv and the yes network i would appactie it very mutch

sbmurphy 03-13-09, 05:43 PM sorry to say I was told mach 30th RI
march 17 CT as usual RI gets the awsome
upgrade's frist am disapointed we have to wait but atleast were getting tv caller ID
but CT the third system to get it and that makes RI unfair as I see it the 4th system to
get it please amy correct me if am wrong the other two systems are in FL and OK the only thing they have we don't have is being able to pay your bill throught the set top box which I think something cox should do 1 if you pay on the phone your charged if only if you talk to a live person 2 it free to pay on-line but you need a computer. not everyone has a computer. I love to be able to check my e-mail both FL and OK systems can Amy is these features we ever see? I know things take time but as a question to the passport Echo why can I not get 7 days I get only 5 days its a bummer when you see and ad for a show 8 or nine days out and can set up the show to rec to the dvr
also is there on demand upgrade coming up I thought i saw something on that'
thanks Amy
throwinsevens 03-13-09, 11:46 PM One of the guys at work told me that when he re-scanned his Cox QAM, he found that the locals had been re-mapped to their local channel numbers... i.e. instead of being in the 70's they showed up as 2.1, 6.1, 10.1, 12.1, 36.1, 36.2, and 64.1.
So, being the type who will try anything new, I did a rescan on one of my Vizio VW42L's. Sure enough, it did re-map those channels. Unfortunately, now the TV shows "No Audio and Video" on those newly re-mapped channels. Worked just fine before the re-scan on the 70's channel numbers. If I press guide on the TV remote, I actually see the PSIP guide data, so it is at least reading that part of the stream. I can see the other clear QAM channels in the 90's, but not the re-mapped locals.
As I am a glutton for punishment, I tried it on my other VW42L and got the same results. Anyone else out there with a Vizio having similar issues? It works fine on a Samsung I tried, and on several Sharp Aquos'.
I called Vizio (again with the punishment). The level 1 tech tried to tell me that I was watching my cable box because I could see "on demand" (the clear QAM channels in the 90's). Needless to say I "demanded" to speak with a supervisor and got passed to level 2, who proceeded to tell me that because other TV's work on the same outlets, and because I can see my cable box on the HDMI input of the TV and it can tune the QAM channels, and because I can get some of these locals with an antenna with the TV's ATSC tuner, it proved that it was not a problem with the TV. Yeah, if you can follow that logic then you are better at this than I am. I explained that I disagreed with this assessment and asked if he could refer the case to an engineer. I'm thinking firmware issue. The tech assured me they would pass the info on to their engineers and have them call back. I'm not holding my breath.
Anyway, I was wondering of anyone else is having similar issues or if I might be missing something. :(
ProvTV5 03-14-09, 03:14 AM Channel 6 is moving in the right direction. They no longer have to leave HD to put their ID on the screen. I noticed the other night that they can put their ID and other information such as stories coming up on the news at 11:00 in HD on their HD feed. They might be getting closer WPRI/Fox providence in the HD race. I was wondering if channel 6 has new equipment to do this and if their going to be able to start showing syndicated programs in HD soon. Just wondering. Thanks
throwinsevens 03-14-09, 12:45 PM Channel 6 did make some changes. They have a CG that has been doing all those fancy new graphics. The problem was it either did HD or SD, it could not do both. Now that they don't need to produce an SD stream from their plant (as cable and sat are now downconverting their HD to get their analog feed, and their analog transmitter is doing nightlite), they could move the CG to the HD side and not have to switch to upconverted to use it. It has been in the plan for a while, just needed to wait for the digital switch.
HD Syndicated programs are also in the plan at some point, but no idea on when that may happen.

arnjohn 03-14-09, 01:56 PM On my Mitsubishi TV the channels map in the 70's and on my Sony recorder they map to the channel numbers 6.1 etc. Both have QAM tuners but they map with different numbers. Both tune fine.
arnjohn 03-14-09, 04:16 PM COX fixed the T V Guide On Screen (TVGOS) problem by putting the data on analog channel 95. Thank you Cox.

Dates are usually never set in stone as things can always change. I would ask that you please check your posts as you have posted that CT would get it the 16 or 17th and RI would get it on the 30th. You then say RI gets everything first. Many times the reason RI gets them first is that Cox New England is based out of RI, it is also a FIOS market.
Remember that you could email 10 times and get different responses from different people. Not everyone reads the updated product info and sometimes they just dont know. I would wait until the 30th and then if we dont get anything after the April 1st date ask again. We are supposed to be getting more HD channels on or around 4/1 so we may see an "all in one update".
Patience is key here folks ;)......
amq6240 03-16-09, 10:28 AM amy do you know if TV caller ID is coming march 30th
We launched TV CID in Connecticut today. We'll continue to test it here in RI over the next few weeks. The March 30 date is not yet confirmed. As soon as I have an exact date, I promise to let you all know.
sbmurphy 03-16-09, 01:02 PM to ph8te and amq6240
my friend just came over and saw the tv caller id insider tip
I hope were getting on march 30 if not thats find cox should put on the screen dates can change also thats fine if it does as I want a product that works I hate too see bugs
and problemes but why run a ad if the date not in stone? other then do anyone know if there working on paying your cable bill through the set top box, checking you cox e-mail as well as other featurs such as movie listings, news and info I see OK and FL systems can is that because they use Scientific Atlanta dvrs and because of that will we not see ITV just wondering such services are e-mail viewer, view/paybill order premium channels, request product info,at the movies, news & info, weather, whats on tv,horoscopes, custumer support, program remote, lottery results even from other states. I think thats some all cox systems should have is it something cox can't do if so I can understand that but if so will RI ever have it.
"Patience is key here folks" but I remember at one point cox would say the dvr can do all type of things nothing was ever stated what was coming but always was told great things are coming. The only thing i could care less about is cell phones too much signal problemes but if i could program the dvr that changes everything.

Respectfully, people would probably be more likely to respond to your posts if you took 1 extra minute to incorporate some grammar and proofread.

I have heard this as well via internet talk nothing really official (might want to check out the COX HDTV thread), but its not going to happen "soon". Maybe this year maybe not. Not sure what its going to be exactly, but I do not believe they are going to be using TVGuide data (you can get that for free). Cox has also been testing a Integrated TiVO interface so I guess that would count as well......
Just a little hint..COx usually doe not give dates\timeframes on products in testing or negotiations. All this would do is lead to 100000000 people asking what happened if the date\timeframe was missed. GIve it time and keep an eye on the COx HDTV thread in the HDTV Programming forum and this one. Patience is a virtue though as nothing happens quickly ;).....
jreese831 03-20-09, 06:47 AM Hi all; this may not be the best forum/thread to post this in, but I'd appreciate any insight anyone might be able to shed. I'm going to be moving in with a friend soon, and thus cancelling my Cox service. This also means returning my DVR. I've got quite a few shows saved on there that I'd rather not lose, and was wondering if there is any way I can somehow transfer them to my PC. I know I can just go find them online via torrents and whatnot, but I'd rather do it the legit way if possible. I've got an "older style" box (that is, not the newest one's they're giving out now), if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance!
DM2006RI 03-20-09, 10:58 AM WPRI's audio during a lot of CBS programming is coming across as 2.0 Dolby Digital, whereas the same programming on WBZ is 5.1 Dolby Digital. I noticed this a few times recently, and especially during the basketball yesterday.
What's the deal -- is WPRI's audio "messed up"?

With Cox DVRs there is no way (that I am aware) to transfer files from the DVR to an external disk. If you had a TiVO or another consumer device it owuld be a different story, but as with most "company" owned boxes they disable this feature.

Go with the torrents. In the end it is going to save you hours and hours+ involving capturing and other issues, as there's no easy solution for what you're looking for.

Agreed... there is no good way to get the stuff out of the box without playing it in realtime and capturing it either via firewire, component/hdmi capture card, or composite capture device. I guess you could play it out into a DVD recorder too. Much faster and easier to grab the torrents, plus most people who upload torrents pull the ads out for you. :)

alg2468 03-23-09, 10:24 AM No reception at my residences in Pawtucket or at the West Warwick-Coventry line. I'm using an Antennas Direct DB4 antenna at both homes located at 12 feet high and a Radio Shack bidirectional amplifier. Surprizingly, both locations have no problem picking up Boston chs. 2,4,5,7,28,44,56,and 68.

Not surprising that you do not receive WEDN-DT as it's VHF (Ch. 9) and your antenna is UHF. It should be a decent signal in Southern RI, though.

Tease people with the TV add. It's coming march 30th. Now this is very typical of Cox!!!!
Amy what's the deal with TV CID? Again, Cox is miles behind other systems.
Unless you have teleported to the future and saw what happens on the 30th then please stop complaining...Its getting to a point where you sound like a shill.......
As far as TVCID goes you were TOLD by Amy that the target date was around the 30th of March but that was NOT set in stone...If you want TVCID now move to CT or change providers pretty simple.
As I have said in the past not every rep may be 100% up with the news and they usually are not aware of product launches until right before or the same day of the launch.
I am usually pretty nice but this is getting to a ridiculous level.....

I called about my bill and the rep said they got a e-mail and the TV CID was put on hold. I feel thats fine but why run ads saying its coming? I really love to change providers but can not I am fine with cox internet its a great price the phone a great service it's the cable service am not happy with. Not to be rude the dvr guide I have does only 5 days I thought were supposed to get a week? not to be picky but if you know of a way here is what I want to do can you please tell me if there is way to get around this if something on life time movie net says there a movie on in two weeks is there a way to get the dvr to record the show? I can not think of a way. I forget about the show and miss it. I love movies and hate to miss the movies on life time some times it only on once but then again alot of them repeat but some really do not

The current DVR guide DOES go out more than 5 days I just checked and it is at around 7 days of data including today. The show data ends on WEd 4/1 5AM at this time. If your does not you will need to call Cox for assistance or have someone come out and show you how to operate your equipment.
If you want to see a movie two weeks out and you cant remember write it down on a calendar or a piece of paper.

Hey all - as previously stated, we are actively testing TV CID for launch in RI. We have encountered a couple of minor issues in CT and in our RI test that need to be ironed out before any additional launches. Our intent is not to "tease" you, but to deliver quality products and services that meet your expectations.
I would submit to you that what is not typical for us is to put a date out to our customers with a product launch that is not confirmed. I have consulted with my colleagues across the organization and we agreed to take that into consideration for future communications.
To that end, as soon as we have a confirmed date, you will be among the first to know.
Thanks.
amq6240 03-25-09, 12:27 PM Hey all,
Good news, some in response to what this group has been discussing. See below for a list of five new HD channels being added April 1 ... and no, this is not an April Fool's joke!
NBA HD, ch. 713
Biography HD, ch. 739
Fox Business HD, ch. 767
MLB HD, ch. 768
PPV Events HD, ch. 799
Sports, culture and news ... hope this meets many of your interests. Now, I don't normally post channel additions this early, but we've been assured as far as assurances go that these are definite. IF there are any changes, I beg for your forgiveness now!
One more update here: NBA HD will not launch on 4/1 as originally planned. Will let you know as soon as that date is available as well.

Amy no worries, you never really gave us a firm date so there was no mis-understanding for the most of us ;).

Ohhh nooo what shall I do :D thank you for the heads up though, I was looking forward to getting the channel, but its not a priority.

Wait a few days and youll find out ;)............People Amy have been VERY helpful with letting us know about the channels and features coming to Cox, usually you do not get this service....Please be patient....As far as the other channels since they were not mentioned in the "delay message" you would assume that they are still on schedule pending any further delays......
As far as WGN goes since we dont have the SD version of the channel, I wouldnt expect to see the HD version anytime soon. If you want the channel then I would suggest switching services OR calling Cox\Emailing Cox and requesting the channel.
From Looking at the WGN America site though, I think this would be one channel that would be considered "out of market" most likely. The reason FIOS has it (since I know this will come up) is that they usually do "National Rollouts" of channels so sometimes you will get channels that you wouldnt nornally. Cox will be eventually moving to a National rollout for certain channels from what I hear, but I wouldnt expect this anytime soon.

sbmurphy 03-30-09, 03:01 PM any updates to TV CID
does anyone know if TVland is planning HD
or if hallmark channel not hallmark movie channel will ever be in HD

You should contact the respective channels directly to see if they are planning to launch HD feeds, they will know before Cox does..
As far as HD PPV It will probably consist of sporting main events (UFC, Boxing, Wrestling) MOvies are handeld via the OnDemand service (via Channel 1). I am betting there has been a huge deamnd for HD PPV (I know I have wanted it just for the boxing matches alone) and now we will have it.
Cox DOES carry TWC in HD in ohter markets, it just hasnt been added to our lineup yet. From several responses I have seen I am guessing they are waiting for the local 8's to go HD before adding it (this is purely a guess though).

That's one fabulous run-on sentence.
indeed it was as well as a hop scotch train of thought ;)..........
Lawerence, the CallerID was confirmed delayed with no ETA given by Amy awhile back due to issues that had come up in the CT launch....
FOr the NBATVHD While Amy said it was delayed, I would suspect it had to do with contract issues, so if they got it cleared up great, BUT if it doesnt go live then dont complain everyone was forewarned.

I now there's no ETA CallerID but do think it's something cox will be able to do or is it a motorolla issue what I mean by that is a softwere issue which needs a update for which it can not be fix right know? just wondering I have a feeling it will come but soimething tells me it will be after the summer which is fine but it be a great feature to have also did you know about the music choice channel channel changes I got a new line up in my bill. I was wondering how come cox does not have a radio service you had one many moons ago. I can not get much radio reception here in newport. I was just wondering some cable systems you can hook the cable line to your reciver and get fm station so you do not need a indoor or out door antanna i don't know if any cable system does it now but it be cool if cox did and was wondering why they stoped it if you know
have a nice day:)
sbmurphy 04-01-09, 02:56 AM HI look what I found in the internet

This information was reported in the main COX thread in the HDTV Programming forum.....
Remember you need to be patient as the August date is something they would like to do, but doesnt mean they will be able to meet that date. They will ahve to go through rigorous testing to ensure that there will be minimal issues when the launch does happen. Anything talked about like the article states is something in the planning\testing phase, its WAY to early to speculate anything.
As far as being "smaller". the RI\CT Region for Cox is actually one of the "top" markets. We are usually ahead of the others as far as channels, features ect. I believe Cox is currently testing TiVO in New England before they roll it out to the rest of the country.
Just as a side note, anything in testing, ect Cox will be very tentative to give any info on as there are no confirmed dates, or even guaruntee that the service will see the light of day.
Again I hope people will be patient and not hammer Amy, she can only tell us so much and is really going above and beyond. There are many markets that dont have a rep giving out the info she has.
Just and FYI looks like all channels were added except for NBATV HD as Amy has said it has been delayed......

I agree with you
I won't hammer this one like the story said there not giving any info or screen shots. if thats the case I can bet you amy has not info yet we will just have to wait a hell of a long time for this one the only thing I like to know is will we have to change out our dvr boxs or can we use the same boxs or will everyone including digital regular digital boxs as well. I hope down the line I mean WAY down the line if we need to change out our boxs Amy can give up a heads up but in the mean time lets not hammer Amy. I hate to see her stop giving us any info.but question I have but not re the guide. why is there a M card in the DVR? whats it for? is it a cable card? why did the FCC mandate it if thats why its there
thanks

I'm not sure how big the story is regionally, but the news about WHDH-7 deciding not to carry the new 10 PM Jay Leno show was pretty big news in Boston today. I wonder if WJAR will soon regret their decision to null out their DT signal over SE Mass? I live in Hanson, where WJAR analog 10 used to put in a perfect signal, and WPRI-DT and WNAC-DT still do. I have yet to receive a single pixel from WJAR-DT (or WLNE or WSBE DT for that matter) here, only 25 miles away. On my insignia DTV box, the signal never goes over about 25%, and it usually needs to be at least 50 to show any video at all.
Maybe it's possible that my location is just in a bad spot for WJAR, because I am able to receive it at a relative's house in Marshfield, though not very strong. It is obvious looking at their pattern that I am directly in the null. It's not an antenna issue, because it's actually a UHF antenna that I'm using (Channel Master 4228), and it used to receive WNAC-DT just fine when it was on UHF channel 54. We do still get WJAR on Comcast here, but only the standard def feed.
I don't see that WJAR DT has much of a null anywhere. What does TVFool show for your location?
John
TV Fool shows it in the yellow range, so they must not take into account their directional pattern either. If you look up WJAR on fccinfo.com, you'll see the nulls in their pattern.
Trip in VA 04-04-09, 02:14 AM TV Fool certainly does take the directional pattern into account.
180 kW in your direction isn't nothing.

From chaecking out the WWE 24/ OnDemand section it looks no different then HBO or Starz. I believe the "backdrop" that you see with Cinemax comes from the provider not Cox (dont quote me on that though).
As far as Music Choice goes, the Romance channel is listed as spansih only on the Music Choice website (descriptions of the channels were directly under the actual channel changes). Providing that Cox has made a decision on where to place the new channels you should be able to call and find out. Remember though that the decision might have not been finialized yet, so the reps may not know.

The weak signal that WJAR, WLNE, and WSBE radiates to the northeast in the direction of Boston is true. Up in Melrose, MA, the analog signals for these stations came in, but there is zero signal from these stations' digital signals throughout the Boston area. WJAR and WLNE share the same antenna - WJAR's engineer says that the antenna will be raised to the tower's top this summer with higher power, and that could produce a better signal. I'm not sure what if any upgrades WLNE will do,but some reception reports indicate that some areas receive WLNE better than WJAR,even thoughWLNE is at lower power. WSBE at 50kw is very weak so it's range is small. It will be interesting to see what effect the shutoff of the analog stations in Boston on June 12 will have on the reception of WJAR, WSBE, and WLNE in the Boston area.
The fact that they are harder to recieve in the Boston area is more due to becoming UHF rather than VHF than transmitting less power in that direction. Can people up there get WPRI or WNAC on channel 12 and 13?

John
We're actually having a similar conversation over on Radio-Info. I'm inclined to blame the side-mounted antenna for the WJAR signal issues rather than UHF versus VHF (WNAC-DT worked fine on 54 for many people). I, along with many others, will be amused to see how much improvement is gained from moving the antenna to the top of the tower later this year.
- Trip
Is there any info on the FCC's site on the top mounted antenna? Will it be omni directional and will it also sent WLNE's signal?
The VHF/UHF performance advantage was also evident here from the Hartford/New Haven direction and is also clearly seen on the analog stations. It may not show up when the paths are near line of sight where antennas are on mountains a few thousand feet above the users or where high towers send signals to users over flat land. But here with only "moderately" high towers sending to fringe areas over lots of hills VHF wins every time.
John
Trip in VA 04-06-09, 06:33 PM I think it's the same antenna, just top-mounted. I don't know about WLNE's signal. I'm just thinking that being side-mounted could be distorting the signal over Massachusetts.
- Trip
Falcon_77 04-06-09, 08:03 PM I don't see a filing for WLNE to go to the top. In addition to side mount concerns, it seems that something is lost with shared antennas as well (e.g., KOLO in Reno, NV).
In any event, as ctdish knows well, I can't get a hint of UHF WJAR or WLNE at my parents' house in Mystic. Analog WJAR/10 was watchable.
I don't normally favor VHF, but most of the time I'm getting signals from towers on a 5000' mountain out West and the only "forests" are planted trees. In general, UHF seems to be better for LOS areas while VHF does better with difficult terrain and trees.

Cox Communications Announces Upcoming Launch of Multi-Room DVR Functionality
Cox continues to provide advanced DVR product options for our customers
ATLANTA, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications announced today plans to offer a multi-room viewing option for DVR customers. This new offering will allow viewing of recorded DVR content throughout the home, in both standard and high-definition. The device contains a larger hard drive that allows customers to record and store more of their favorite shows. In addition to the increased capacity, the DVR will use Cox's next generation guide which includes new personalization and search options as well as interactive features. Multi-room viewing will launch in a yet to be named Cox market later this year with additional launches to follow.
"Cox strives to continually enhance the TV experience for our customers with advanced video services that allow for more viewing flexibility and personalization," said Steve Necessary, vice president of video strategy and product management. "We have been testing multi-room viewing in our labs and are confident that our customers will love the additional convenience and functionality it offers."
Multi-room DVR viewing provides users with the ability to watch content that is recorded on one DVR in the home on other non-DVR receivers in the home. In addition, customers will have full trick functionality - pause, fast forward and rewind - on recorded content while watching from any receiver.
Communication between the DVR and non-DVR receiver(s) will take place using MoCA (Multimedia Over Cable Alliance) home networking technology. The technology allows Cox to transform current in-home wiring into the equivalent of an Ethernet network so that receivers can connect to one another.
"Our advanced DVR product options, coupled with the roll out of our new interactive program guide, will offer customers a user-experience that is simple and convenient while providing unparalleled control over their video experience," added Necessary. "Multi-room viewing will not replace the option for multiple stand alone DVR units in a home. It's an addition to our product line, allowing customers the opportunity to decide which option best fits their needs."

If you are so unhappy with Cox then swith services plain and simple. It is obvious that you and Matt are unhappy with your service so SWITCH. Then you can go an complain about how another company is slow.......If all you do is whine and complain its just a fast way to get yourself on the ignore list.....YOUve already made your point that Cox is slow, but complaining on the open forum isnt going to do anyone any good. Call Cox and complain and request the features that YOU want. the more people that call the more likely that the feature will come out.
SOrry if this sounds like a rant, but it seems the same people making the same complaints with the blind leading the blind........

and in the cable tv box department i think they should forget making cable tv boxs but like i said thats just my 2 cents

OK now I know you must be joking.....You need to do some research 1st and see how many issues those with SA boxes have........Also, if you think Cox is the only on ewith Software issues then you obviously have not done ANY research into ohter companies like FIOS which have had more then a handful of "hiccups" with thier own software.......I am not sayin that Cox is without fault, as they HAVE had issues and there are blips, but they are not the only ones...
As far as this goes I am finally done, I am all for constructive complaints\comments, but there comes a time when it goes wayyyyy beyond constructive and all it becomes is "noise"......

You have no right to complain as the service is not even in your name so therefore you are stuck with what you have, plain and simple. All of the complaining in the world will not change that.
I very much enjoy the AVS forums as there are many, many helpfully and intelligent people posting ideas/help, etc.
Can we please get back to the topics of this particular board?
Also, you might be taken more credibly if you could compose a well worded and grammatically correct post.

If you need information you can ask for it. If you think you discovered a problem that is new or of very general interest, it is probably OK to mention it. If something does not work the way you want it to probably no one here can help you, so bringing it up over and over will been seen as whining. This type of problem is best brought up with your provider. As was mentioned you could switch to a different provider but none are perfect and you need to select what works best for you. You could even try getting free over the air reception, then you could get antenna help here if you needed it.

Trip, I haven't been able to figure out why but one of my TV's has has had trouble on and off remapping the digital 12 and 64 signals. I often had to get WNAC on 54 before the Feb switch. Right now WPRI comes in on channel 12.1 and WNAC is tuned in on 12.6
John
sbmurphy 04-09-09, 03:31 PM anyone know what the best brand name indoor antanna is the best
out there? I really want to pick up the boston stations
TVFool indicates that WFXT is about 30 dB weaker in Providence than the strongest Boston stations so you may require an outside antenna. On the more positive side it is only slightly weaker than WBPX. Try running TVFool for your exact location and see what you get.
The indoor antenna thread is here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1037779

alg2468 04-14-09, 10:41 AM I noticed on the Local HDTV board for Boston, MA the latest post shows that several Boston TV stations have applications to greatly increase their DTV power after June 12:
WBZ from 825 to 915 kw; WFXT from 78 to 780 kw; WBPX from 300 to 1000 kw. I notice that here in the Providence area the stations are far behind in improving their DTV power and signals- only WJAR appears to have an application for increasing their power. As mentioned on this board, Providence's DTV signals don't have the extended reception range like those in the Boston area. Hopefully someday they will upgrade their power significantly.
Trip in VA 04-14-09, 10:49 AM What? WNAC and WPRI have filed to max out their power. WLWC has asked to boost power as well, probably as much as they can given the interference potential to WSBE-DT.
WLNE might be constrained by WEKW and WEDW, but I'm not sure.
- Trip
Also in terms of extending range power only makes a small difference. Antenna height is more important. Where I live WVIT at 240 KW is much stronger than WFSB at 1 MW because it has a higher tower.

If I remember correctly it was supposed to be 60 days so this Saturday the 18th would be 60 days counted, Monday being next business day I would guess.
I heard a PSA on WJAR saying they would be at full power by June 17th. They indicated that fringe reception will improve. I assume that they are referring to moving the antenna to the top of the tower. Any one know if the lower antenna will remain in place or will it be moved to the tower top?

JamesF in NK 04-20-09, 10:48 AM Back in February, a COX technician visited my house to work on a minor cable problem. While he was here we were chatting about DVR equipment (I was lamenting the lack of storage capacity when recording HD). He said to me that sometime this year Cox will start to issue new DVRs as the standard issue (to replace the existing Motorola 6416 III.) According to the technician these boxes will have much more memory capacity (100+ hours of HD). Has anyone heard about this and do you know what the status of this might be? I for one hope this happens and soon. I can only save about 18 hours of HD.

don't hold your breath waiting you will turn blue waiting. I waited soooo long for the cox dvr service. When I found out Flordia system had it we had to wait a year or two. I read on the internet later this year trying for a box with a bigger hard drive. I ahve read COX is planning to start releasing HIgh Capacity boxes once it launches its new interfaces (NDS, TiVO, ect). I wouldnt expect it "soon", but most likely before the end of the year if testing proves successful. If there are major problems when they beta test, then expect a delay.
Much to the surprise of some members here New England is one of the "top" markets, for Cox. We still have many channels, services that wont reach other markets until late summer. Since its still very early in the proccess, its goign to take some time for the actual rollout to happen.
Be patient, and keep an eye out on the forums and most likely youll catch when they start testing\releasing the new equipment ;) .

They have a very large overlap in coverage with WTIC which is also on channel 31. This could be a big mess near the intersection of MA, RI and CT.

AQ
Amy with out "giving dates"
will it be this year or should we say next year? I know there working on it

JamesF in NK 04-24-09, 05:53 PM I have a problem with channel 10-1 of WJAR. I am not sure what I should do about it (if I can do anything.)
Shortly after the much publicized nationwide all-digital TV transition in February, I did a re-scan of all the channels on one of my two TVs (at the suggestion of a newspaper article). The TV is a small Samsung HD wide screen digital - http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=lcdtv&model_cd=LN19B361C5DXZA. The TV is served by COX cable. I am subscribing to HD service, but there is no HD digital box or DVR connected to this TV (my other TV has a DVR connected.)
To my surprise, after the re-scannning was done, I was now getting 16x9 HD on WGBH PBS and the major networks in Providence - NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX even though the only connection to this TV is the coax cable (this cable is NOT run through the DVR of the other TV). What a bonus; HD without the big tank of a box which is bigger than the TV itself. Everything was great at first. But now the digital WJAR 10-1 breaks up so badly that it's now not watchable. So, I am watching what looks like an SD analog WJAR feed. Or am I?
I am no expert at this cable TV science. Do any of you have a similar issue? Can you guess what's happening to this WJAR digital station. My channel listing says it channel 10-1. Channel 10 llooks like mud compared to 10-1. But 10-1 breaks up badly. Where is the problem? Am I doing something wrong?
If the picture breaks up most likely the signal is weak.

As CT said sounds likse a signal issue as you are getting the channel via QAM your signals may be off. I just watched WJAR the other night off of a DVR recording and didnt notice any break up. You may want to check all of your connections and reseat\clean them. SOmetimes though it can be the TVs QAM tuner that is having issues. Either way check the connections 1st, and if that doent work, you may want to schedule a roll out for the Techs to check you line signal.
Mach1_8 04-25-09, 12:00 PM Hey all. I'm going to be moving to the Newport area this summer. I currently have Comcast service; using 2 cable cards in my S3 TiVo as my DVR. I have a couple questions:
1) Does Comcast provide service to Newport? After seeing all the posts about Cox, I'm guessing "no" but I figured I would ask anyway.
2) Can I still use a cable card setup with my TiVo via Cox? I sure hope so...the thought of using a different DVR makes my head hurt a little!
Thanks for looking.

Cox does suport cable cards but from what I here they have lots of problemes withthe cable cards but you can ask AMY she posts alot of stuff ask her. with cable cards I beleive there some channels you can not get but I could be totally wrong cox does not have the Tivo service in their dvr so if you do not use yours your out of luck your stuck with there guide and cox does not have the new 30 or 50 mgs down loads speeds like comcast the fastest is 20 but with speed boost it goes to 25 meg and we do not get the boston channels either

Unfortunately some people do not do research before posting repsonses and will take any chance they can get to take a jab at Cox.
1) The answer is no. Cox will be your only choice until FIOS is fully built out there. There is of course the Sattelite offerings as well.
2) You can use a CableCard with your TiVO, the cost is ~1.99 per month for the use of the service. The only thing you will nto be able to do is order PPV via your remote OR access OnDemand offerings. You may also experience some delays when channels get updated.
From what I know once Tru2Way get implemented with Cards and devices you should be able to access all services as the communication will be able to go both in and out instead of just in (current cards).
Here is the RI Cox Pricing Page:
http://ww2.cox.com/residential/rhodeisland/tv/pricing.cox
You can also find the channel listings ect there as well.
I recently rescanned my Sony E50A10 for Cox QAM channels, and it didn't detect any of the channels that it used to (I used to get channels in the 80s and 90s). Has anyone else had the same experience? Thanks in advance for any info.

USually the channels in the 80s and 90s where "leaks" of ondemand ect, so they switch from time to time and dont always work.......I think the Local HD channels are in the 70's........
Thanks Ph8te. Yea, that was the reason I was rescanning, to see if the leaks had moved, and now I'm kicking myself for doing it because they're all gone now. Not sure if they'll ever show up again but for now, I'm not getting any of those leaked channels like I used to.

They come and go now and are not always active, so if you rescan and there is nothing on the channel it may skip over them. The net day they may be active again. Also, Cox might have fixed the hole that was there, or switched them to a different location. Personally I dont feel like going through the all of the channels my TV picks up (there was just too many) to find the leaks again. If was fund while it lasted, but really most of the time Id just have it on for background noise not to actually watch.

Hi - this is Amy Quinn, the aforementioned Cox rep who posts info and tries to answer questions. Ph8te hit the points accurately, so I'll just add: good luck with your move and reach out with any follow-up questions. Welcome to RI for the summer.

I am also in NK and have the same problem. I have 2 TVs that tune via QAM and both exhibit severe breakup on 10-1. This sympton has come and gone over the past several months. I had Cox come out and the tech was totally useless. He would not even check signal level because the problem was not occuring while he was there. He changed the cable modem low pass filter because "sometimes they go bad". Had no effect. It is very frustrating. I also see breakup via DVR when watching HGTV and a few other channels. I have heard that Cox has been "rebalancing their system" in RI recently. Not sure if it is better or worse because of that.

Thanks for your response. While not wishing misforture to anyone else, it's somewhat reassuring to learn that it's not just my systems having issues with 10-1. Others have suggested that maybe I have loose connections. Nope, been there, done that routine. Cox has installed new fittings but 10-1 issues persist. I have had nothing but trouble with WJAR (digital) for a few years now - from OTA signals being weak to audio/video not being in sync even with a Cox-supplied HD box and/or a DVR. Too bad. I watch that network channel more than the others (during the limited time I do watch network TV.)

DM2006RI 05-02-09, 11:59 PM WJAR's audio sync has been a bit off all week and it's absolutely terrible tonight (Sat 5/3). SNL is basically unwatchable (it usually is anyway, lol, but it's worse when the audio is almost a full second ahead!)
ATPTourFan 05-03-09, 10:33 AM Matt, if you're already on the Internet so much, why not just view the cameras online at the RI DOT Traffic Management Center's website??
http://www.tmc.dot.ri.gov/CamCenter/camcenter.aspx
You realize that Cox is trading channels with low viewership (or online redundancy) for more HD channels, right? If not, you should.

HI
anything on TV CID yet and word on the 50 mg internet download service? any new hd coming?
Since it hasnt been announced I am just goin off a guess..
1. They are still owrking on it.
2. the service was just launched in a Docsis 3.0 area, which I do not believe the New England market has officially been upgraded to yet. Once the upgrade is complete you can expect the upgrade.
3. If I had to guess the only HD channels that other markets have that we are missing are:
ABC Family
Disney
HBO2
Weather Channel HD
I would say the 1st 3 will come before the last one, probably within the next few months. If I have read things correctly, until the Local on the 8's is in HD I think Cox New England is going to hold off on adding The Weather Channel HD.
The only other channels that I have seen added to another market that others have requested is the HD Net Pack. These I believe are under local agreement, so its probably highly unlikely well ever see them.
ricomputerguy 05-05-09, 08:22 PM thanks
so verizon got the rights it figures verizon sucks anyway tooo much money will stick with good old cox just hope the new speeds come soooooon
I see cox working on the lines in my area I hope its for the new 50 gb services which beleive me its work its weight in gold. its a 100 dallar package

I am checking into what's coming down the pike for On DEMAND that might be related to the search options. In the meantime, I can tell you very simply the reason we no longer have the Traffic Channel: they ceased operations.

I expect an update on TV CID in RI very soon. The ultimate Internet tier is on our product roadmap for 2009. And finally, I just heard yesterday about some new HD channels launching. Once all of the i's are dotted and t's are crossed, you all will be among the first to know!
Thanks!

??? Cox already rents modems..They always have.....You MAY need a new modem for Docsis 3.0, but in all reality the modem you have may be capable of the speeds you need. Remember even if downloadng you will not always see the 50 Mbit speed increase as you can only be as fast as the slowest connection between you and your destination.
BTW in other markets the price differs between 100-150 for the 50Mbit service. It usualy depends on what the competition has for pricing.
The guide was updated last night with some "major things"., I am not sure what it was, but it took close to 1/2 hour for the update to install after its initial download.
Amy, thank you for the updates as always. :)

I noticed the guide update too. Looks the same to me, but seems a *lot* more responsive on HD channels. No more lag scrolling down in the guide, reduced lag flipping channels, etc.
Wonder if there are any "visible" changes or if it's all under the hood.

I know that "Remember even if downloadng you will not always see the 50 Mbit speed increase as you can only be as fast as the slowest connection between you and your destination" thanks for the reminder though but most of that things I do is music from Rhapsody and some games on the internet from services such as bigfish games and streaming music as well on Itunes I thought I get better streaming But I don't know you tell me am not an expert on that area. but still I think its worth the money am sure but not export I would think the 50 mbit would work with legal services such as Rhapsody cnn napster Itunes but I could be wrong also thanks. my DVR guide seems to work faster but i was up all night the other night my box never got a update but maybe it was for cox workers only up but still my dvr is working better though. hope we get TV CID soon my Caller ID box died today things are a little tight on the budget so a new is out for a few weeks. Phate I did not cox still rented out cable modems wow good to know if I ever need to upgrade due to modem dieing or get useless due to it not being Docsis 3.0 who knows what will happen but will cross the bridge when i happens thanks amy and Ph8te for all your inside info have you both have a nice weekend
KML-224 05-08-09, 12:56 PM I had a question about WPXQ-DT (ION) channel 17 in Block Island: Am I correct in guessing that their digital transmitter is in Exeter with their old analog channel 69 transmitter? It's the only digital signal I've ever received from the Providence/New Bedford DMA. As for their over-the-air digital signal, is it any better to receive in Providence itself than, say, WLWC-DT (CW)?

From my location in Pawtucket, WPXQ has a slightly better signal probably due to its higher power at 1000 kw than WLWC which transmitting from Freetown, MA is at 450 kw.

Both WPXQ-DT 17 and the former analog 69 are located in Hopkinton, RI, very close to the CT line, not Exeter.
KML-224 05-08-09, 04:41 PM Thanks for the correction. I'm not in that part of Rhode Island often. Maybe I'm thinking of where WEEI-FM 103.7 FM has their transmitter? I think their transmitter is located there. The straight line distance from New Britain to Hopkinton, RI is only 54 miles, so that may be why I get them (WPXQ-DT) on occasion.

Actually I thought they did rent modems, but I may be wrong on that, you would need to call to find out. If you are renting a modem now, then you probably could probably get it replaced if you upgraded.
As far as the internet goes, that is not really a discussion for this forum and you would probably wnat to go to a forum that specializes in that advice. As far as streaming goes, it proabably wont make much of a difference, besides the load times. THere are too many facotrs involved (including your computer specs) that play a part in what doed well or not. Also, if you have the premiere internet service now you are able to get a little over 2 MB\sec (YES MB no Mb ) over services. I am easily getting these over my wireless. That would mean you could get an album usually in less then 10 Minutes or so. 50Mb service would be over kill for you most likely.
Also, if a el cheapo CallerID box is not in the cards for you, then why are you considering a service that is going to increase your monthly bill by about $50 a MONTH if not more, its none of my busiess, but that doesnt make sense.
ricomputerguy 05-11-09, 09:43 AM Actually I thought they did rent modems, but I may be wrong on that, you would need to call to find out.
50Mb service would be over kill for you most likely.

your right am talk with my foot in my mouth as usual but I was thinking about because we want to use netflixs. as if you have the 50Mb its unlimited and I plan on watching a lot of movies, yes its over kill but on the 20Mb do you think I could go over the bandwith if we say watched all the seasons of adem 12 there is at least 6 seasons we would watch at least 6 hours of them. Thats why I was thinking of the 50Mb services if not am not going to get right away anyway the roommate also thinks it over kill. I was not mad over your commend thats way this board is here so people can give there thoughts thanks for your thought on this
thank you
have a nice day
amq6240 05-11-09, 03:12 PM Thanks for your response.
Hi folks,
We are looking into this. I will update you as soon as I have information. Thanks.

For Immediate Release: May 11, 2009
Cox Delivers Caller ID to the TV
New Free Service is Latest Feature of Cox’s iTV Platform
Warwick, RI – Cox Communications today announced Caller ID to the TV will launch May 18 in Rhode Island, allowing customers to identify incoming callers from the comfort of their living room and without missing a second of their favorite shows.
Cox is the only cable provider in Rhode Island offering this service, and at no additional cost to customers. Caller ID to the TV is available to Cox customers who subscribe to both Cox Digital Telephone with Caller ID and Cox Digital Cable. The capability will be expanded to additional Cox markets later this year. Click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvzKoXYvWUM)for a video demo.
“Caller ID to the TV is an example of our commitment to the continued evolution and convergence of our communications platforms,” said Doreen Studley, vice president of marketing for Cox Communications. “Our customers prefer to bundle voice, Internet and video services from one trusted provider. More importantly, they want these services to work together to enhance their lives.”
Caller ID to the TV is the latest enhancement to the company’s interactive television (iTV) platform that provides instant access to information via the TV screen. iTV enables the integration of phone and Internet with the TV to provide valuable information for viewers. In addition to managing the Caller ID function, iTV allows Cox Digital Cable customers to access the following via the MENU button on the remote control:
- Call History
- iTV Weather
- iTV Games
- iTV Remote
- News Zone
- Sports Zone
- Kids Zone
Cox is currently the eighth largest phone company in the U.S., with more than three million residential and business telephone customers. In the past year, more people nationwide chose Cox Digital Telephone for home phone service than all former regional Bell operating companies combined.
“The ability to link phone features directly to the TV makes the phone/video bundle more attractive to customers,” said Matt Davis, a research director at IDC, a global market intelligence firm. “As service platforms and technologies continue to integrate, customers will gravitate more towards one trusted provider to manage all their communications services.”

Since I saw this post I thought I would check it out and can verify that Channel 10 is out of sync both via the Digital 10-1 (direct connect) and via channel 701 on my HD box. I usually dont notice this type of thing, but it was very prominent on the Late Show this evening and commercials on the channel.
I did not notice this however on last weeks or any episode of The Office which besides Heroes and the News is usually the only reason I watch that channel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_television
"High-definition television (HDTV), one of several different formats that can be transmitted over DTV, uses one of two formats: 1280 × 720 pixels in progressive scan mode (abbreviated 720p) or 1920 × 1080 pixels in interlace mode (1080i). Each of these utilizes a 16:9 aspect ratio."

A brief update here: we are working with Channel 10 to identify what is causing this issue. In the meantime, could you and James F send me a direct message with your service address and phone number? Thanks.

they will tell you how to reboot the box
You can reboot your box by pressing the power button until "boot' shows up on the display. It'll take a minute or two. If that doesn't work, then I'd suggest calling Technical Support: 383-2000.

Our receivers are compatible with all HD formats. When you get your TV, the output setting on our box will default to 1080i. You'll need to select the format that matches the output setting for your TV; in this case, 720p.
Good luck.

Channels change position all the time, sometimes its a matter of making room for new channels, sometimes its for different reasons. I would make a huge guess that WGBX is going to digital becasue of the digital switchover AND the fact that it is a triplicate PBS channel to WSBE our local PBS affiliate and WGBH the "major" Boston PBS affiliate. I dont see anything about WGBH moving to digital, but it wouldnt suprise me.
While Cox does have an agreement I beelive to extend thier analog transmission of channels, eventually people will need to make the jump to either a new TV or a converter box. THe digital switchover will hopefully happen in June and not be delayed again.
IMO Cox will offer analog as long as there is a deamnd for it and it makes financial sense. Once the cons outweigh the Pros, you can bet you will see a more rapid transition to "All digital" service. The funny thing is if people took a look theyed see wed be able to get more channels if we switched to Digital service as analog channels are bandwith hogs......
As far as the HD channels go, since they are being added to ther markets as well, it wouldnt surprise me that they will be comming to the New England Market sooner or later. There are a few more that I have see mentioned as being added to other markets, and I have seen what may be possibly VERY good news to me (as far as a channel addition). Since its so early though, I dont want to say anything as to save Amy the trouble of people asking constantly about the additions.

ok I see so the more digital you get and less analog the better it is for everyone but in one way I just do not understand is the older generation still is hooked on there old cable ready tv why does someone come out with a true digital cable ready tv that would get say 2 to 99 for an example in digital I just paid 2.419.00 on a brand new digital tv, The tv can pick up a few digital channel but thing from 100 up. did i buy the wrong type of tv its a sony brova xbr is it not a digital cable ready set? I love to be able to get rid of the set top box only in ceretain set ups such as a kitchen spare bedroom other then that I love my set top for the dvr

Very believable. In the general Cox HD thread a few folks living in different service areas (I think Omaha) indicated that they would be getting those channels in June, and that there was chatter about it being a national Cox contract. San Diego just got HBO 2 HD.
A few days ago Amy also alluded to more HD coming, albeit without a definitive date yet.

The only channels you can get without a box are 2-99 AND HD locals (NBC,CBS,ABC,PBS,CW), the others are encrypted so you need a box. There is nothing wrong with your TV.

I have read the same thing, and am hesitant to talk about future channels here until Amy has the OK to talk about them. Id rather not hav a firestorm of rumor chatter and have Amy bombarded with questions about them until she is given the OK to talk about them.

from what I hear be very careful read the contract very very carefully
its not as cheap as I thought am glad I never got mixed up in that service
but that just my option I might at times take hits at because I dont like the fact they don't carry certain channels or the speed of the internet(nothing faster then 25 Mb) but I will stick with the good old cox at least I know they have the best customer service. I had a freind who had verizon they were working on the lines they were out of service for a whole week.

I have heard a mixed reaction from FIOS TV service. While people enjoy the quality from the service they do get, they dont likw how long it is taking to get new channels. While they do have more HD then Cox, most of that is the Multi-Premium channels (HBO, Showtime, ect). I think the only real difference besides the HD premiums is that FIOS has the HD Nets and a few SPorts HD channels. Cox also has a few channels that FIOS doesnt have (like ComedyHD).
As far as the internet service IMO its a wash for price and speed.
In the end I would take a look at some forums like dslreports as they have a dedicated forum for both the HSI AND TV service for FIOS. take a look through them do some resaerch and make an educated decision.
Personally I ahve decided to stay with Cox, they are most likely going to get my most wanted two channels by the end of the year so that will make me happy. I am very content with the HSI and the channel offering so for me it doesnt make sense to switch right now.
if i could just ask about 720p ..when i switch my cable box to 780p my tv breaks the picture up to 3 smaller pictures i can do the 1080i (and the pictures fine)..is this a problem with the cable box or tv ..or am i doing something wrong???

I agree with you on that people need to make there own choice if they want to switch to verizon. I am not going to but that's just me. Am sure cox is going to have more HD in the future but like I was told good things are coming and everyone needs to learn how to wait which I lack in. But I think cox will be shining in the end with all the new stuff coming so I have been told but nothing was said but to wait and see :)

Some TV's won't sync to 720P. The owners manual should show valid TV formats for your set.

Wow, good memory, ricomputerguy.
Strange, but that problem just simply went away on it's own. It happened only a couple of times after I posted about the problem here. I called Cox inquiring about the re-boot and was told I would have to call back when the problem was actually happening so they could see what was wrong. Since then it's been fine and haven't had any problems. Never had to call back. Perhaps Cox did something I was unaware of and fixed it.
As far as FIOS is concerned. I'm not simply jumping on board because I got their "ZOMG join us" letter. Coming here is my first step in an educated decision. I just ended my contract after re-upping with a $99.00 deal from COX. I will have to call both to see what kind of packages are available for me before committing to another contract.
There's a lot of support here for Cox, which goes a long way. I think the only minus they may get in my book is they could have started to get more channels a long time ago. Let's face it, the only reason they are so aggressive getting new channels now is because of the direct competition FIOS is bringing. No hard feelings, of course. I understand it's just business. Their customer service is great. Well,....(:D) I do remember the days of making an appointment with the cable guy and being told he'll be there sometime between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, but those days are long gone. :D
I'd love to hear from a FIOS customer. Good, bad or indifferent.
Thanks again!

Amy thats were I read and was wondering "iTV allows Cox Digital Cable customers to access the following via the MENU button on the remote control" or will I have to keep pressing menu twice to get caller history? no big thing
DM2006RI 05-18-09, 04:12 PM I think it's time this board was split up. The questions about Cox's services, Caller ID, and what type of TV works best with their DVRs has nothing to do with HDTV broadcasting in Providence. It's great that their consumers can ask questions and get answers here but for everyone else, to find 1 post about HDTV broadcasts in this market in a span of 4 or 5 pages is ridiculous. There should be a sub-topic for OTA and one for Cable.

While I would usualy tend to agree, I think the Providence market isnt big enough to support two threads. Sometimes the problems OTA people are having can be confirmed\denied by The people with Cable service (Cox\FIOS) and vice versa.
If there were active discussions going on for both I would also tend to agree, but the OTA group here seems to be very quiet. I think what you are also seeing is an influx of newer users who may not be familliar with the forums as well.
Discussions of Coxs service used to be (2005-200X) limited to Channels \HD service, which should fit just fine here. By keeping both in one thread you are keeping both camps in a more active and visable thread.

Disagree, partly.
While I wish certain participants would stop posting the same questions about future Cox services over and over, stop questioning Amy non-stop, and spare us 5 posts about TV caller ID, there's not exactly a ton of activity in this thread.
Although I personally don't care about personal TV/DVR problems and caller ID, I do want information concerning HDTV programming and news for Cox, OTA, and Verizon in RI in a single thread.
amq6240 05-19-09, 10:51 AM June 14th Cox is adding Encore HD, HBO2 HD, ABC Family HD, and Disney HD
this was posted on the hartford CT board said they found it at dept of public utility controls I could not find it but if true hope RI gets the channels too I did a search could be totaly false but who knows
We are indeed adding those channels on June 14th in both states. I was waiting to confirm that our agreements were signed. Channel numbers in RI will be:
Disney HD 772
ABC Family HD 738
HBO2 HD 797
Encore HD 798
amq6240 05-19-09, 11:06 AM Until I hear from Amy and she says it's coming I will not believe it
all I care about is what is true not rumors but I don't know if am the only one but I peek around out HD boards to see what is out there
now back to RI-HDTV chat Amy why is WGBH going to digital cable channel? I also see there moving analog channels around how come? no big thing but I also use my picture in picture in my TV and noticed that change on-line just got my new cable TV bill statement on-line. Will more and more channels be going on digital only with less of them on analog? I know a few people with just analog cable am trying to get them to swich to digital for the better picture.
There will be a handful of changes to our lineup on June 13, related to an industry agreement Cox has signed with the Association of Public Television Stations. These changes will affect how some PBS stations are delivered in Cox markets, including Rhode Island and Connecticut. The agreement ensures that customers will continue to receive PBS programming in both analog and digital/HD from at least one PBS station in the market. Other PBS stations have the option to continue carriage in analog or move to digital. PBS stations opting for digital carriage secure the benefits of providing multiple digital channels on the Cox lineup (detailed below).
WSBE (Channel 36) will be the primary PBS station in Rhode Island. All video customers will have access to WSBE programming via Cox channels 8 and 708 (HD). Other PBS stations currently carried by Cox will have a new place on our lineup, beginning June 13, 2009.
WGBX will be available on channel 804.
In addition, Cox is launching WGBH Create on channel 805 and WGBH World on Channel 807.
For customers in Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton, WEDN will now be available as WEDN HD on channel 703. Customers will need an HD receiver or an HD-ready TV to receive this channel in high definition.
Customers will need a digital receiver (a set top box or a TV set with a built-in digital tuner) or CableCARD to receive digital channels.
Also, Cox will continue to offer customers an analog channel lineup of the most popular cable channels – including WSBE in Rhode Island – without the requirement of leasing a receiver. Those channels include the most popular cable networks like ESPN, CNN, Fox News, Disney Channel, USA, TNT and TBS – just to name a few.
List of PBS channel changes:
Rhode Island (excluding Westerly area)
WGBX 21 804
WGBH - Create - 805
WGBH - World - 807
Rhode Island - Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond, Hopkinton
WGBX 21 804
WEDN* 21 -
WGBH - Create - 805
WGBH - World - 807
WGBH HD 703 -
WEDN HD - 703
* WEDN is currently shared with WGBX. WEDN & WGBX will no longer be available in analog. WEDN will only be available in HD, replacing WGBH HD in the WESTERLY area only.

Technically this is a little off topic.....
NDS, TiVO and I think 1 more company are working on a new guide for Cox. I would not expect anything until mid to late 2009 as most of this was JUST announced and hasnt even started testing yet. Dont even look for it (IMO until at least September).
Tru2Way is the technology not the guide software. Tru2Way allows 2 way communications to occur between the box and the provider (among other things). This is more for those with Cable Cards\TiVOs(when TiVO becomes Tru2Way compliant) so that you can order PPV and ondemand right from the TiVO or your cable card.
Tru2way:

Cox and NDS sometime in 2009 (with also a tidbit about TiVO):

Here is an NDS tru2way interface that MAY (not certain) be simillar to what we see at Cox when it is launched:

I havent head this rumor at all as usually RI is a purely Boston Market. IF we did get the YES network I dont think Yankees games would be blacked out as we are not "in market" for them and do not fall under thier blackout map. You can see the Blackout Map below:

RPMcCormick 05-27-09, 10:48 AM I havent head this rumor at all as usually RI is a purely Boston Market. From the market perspective Providence-New Bedford is market rank 52 and is separate from Boston (Manchester) which is now ranked 7th. Cite:

Click: 2007-2008 DMA Ranks >>
Note: This is a PDF named 2008_2009_DMA_RANKS.pdf. Unfortunately the Nielsen web site has been redesigned and uses convoluted URL's and begs for QuickTime install (which you do not need to find this information).
As for MLB - the television contract is fairly involved and at times provides FOX and ESPN exclusivity to broadcasts (others would be blacked out no matter what). The wiki map really doesn't tell the whole story. For those who may be DirecTV subscribers with MLB Extra Innings this link details some of the blackout issues:
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPage.jsp?assetId=1100045
ransaldi 05-27-09, 11:53 AM We do have YES HD in RI on Fios. All Yankee games are blacked out as it is a Red Sox market and currently MLB rules do not allow for other teams to be shown. The old exception was TBS when it showed Braves games and now WGN which shows some Cubs and White Sox games. Those channels were/are considered Superstations and are allowed to show the games which we get on WGN HD a few nights a week.
You can buy the MLB Extra Innings Package and get Yankee games on it. During Yankee broadcasts the YES HD "National" version of the channel shows alternative broadcasting.

AWESOME
I Hope it's a better guide I hope we get it this year and not next year and am not trying to poke fun at cox but this GD guide we have know really bites the dust. I wish the box could hook up to the computer to play cox Rhapsody through the TV. My friends Tivo does but then again Tivo might have the only rights to that I believe Verizon can but I hear there is issues with that I don't know for sure and that as well cost more. Also I love to be able to pay the cox bill through the box as well as look at our cox bill statement too.
thanks for that bit of info will be waiting and holding my breath from what I can find on the internet this new guide is out of this would, and will kick passport Echo butt :)
KML-224 05-28-09, 10:07 AM To Ransaldi: Silly question, but do you get SNY, a.k.a. the Mets station or MSG Network, in Narragansett as well? Comcast of New Britain, CT carries YES on 32, SNY on 26, NESN on 28 and Comcast SportsNet on 31. We only see MSG get carried during select Knicks or Rangers games. Come August 25th, a lot of this will change, with the major changes that they've announced. (More on that with the Hartford/Comcast thread.)

Amy when you find about the new guide updates please lets us know but I was just having fun with my last comment. Amy why is it though I notice when they do guide update such as the channel zones,ITV weather,ITV Games, ECT CT got it before us. then CT got TV CID just wondering why CT gets all the guide updates first, CT got Passport Echo first from the old starsights guide then we got it but we got like 1 to 3 months later. I saw and ad about verizons onscreen guide you can now hook up set top box to the home network and play your photographs and music through your tv is that something cox will ever do? I love to be able to play my cox Rhapsody on my tv
have a nice day amy
ransaldi 06-01-09, 01:38 PM No SNY or MSG. I believe that YES is launcing a National version of thier channel around the country. Verizon is carrying it in all markets.
JamesF in NK 06-03-09, 06:12 PM Hi folks,
We are looking into this. I will update you as soon as I have information. Thanks.

I have a problem with channel 10-1 of WJAR.
Regarding the quoted posts (read from bottom to top), I'll share with all of you the very interesting and unusual diagnosis to the problem I cited in my first post (quoted). Amy (the COX rep who visits us from time to time), reacting to my post and DanML's post, contacted a COX engineer about the breakup issue I was having with WJAR 10-1 and WLNE 6-1 when the signal is being received by an HDTV with a built in tuner and no HD set top box.
(Clarification - I have two TVs, a Panasonic plasma that gets a perfect signal via a COX HD/DVR (notwithstanding audio/video sync issues which is an NBC network trademark) and a smaller Samsung HDTV with a tuner that gets its signal from the coax feed and no set top box.)
After a phone call from COX engineering, a engineer (not the usual cable guy, but someone from COX HQ in Warwick) came to my house about three weeks ago and tested my signal feeds with some very sophisticated equipment. The coax signal feeds, lines and connections were perfect. The engineer had a hunch; he mentioned that there is a known issue with some TVs and their tuners now with WJAR 10-1 and WLNE 6-1 because of the carrier frequency they both use (I think 74-1 and 74-2 - something like that.) The carrier is different than it used to be (changed a few months ago). However, other channels like WGBH 2-1 and WPRI 12-1 and Fox 64-1 and 28-1 are in a different carrier frequency range (or something like that). Those channels are not affected; I get perfect HD without a set top box on the Samsung. According to the enginner, some TVs simply cannot properly tune 10-1 and 6-1 presently. It's not COXs fault, I was told. It's the signal from the stations.
The tests at my home were very thorough. The enginner and I carried both TVs to different locations to test each feed (including carrying a big plasma up stairs to test each TV with each coax line.) We re-mapped or re-scanned the channels. The Panasonic's tuner had no problem with 10-1 or 6-1 but the Samsung did. We replicated the issue for each coax line in the house. According to the engineer there is now a list of some different model TVs that simply will not tune WJAR 10-1 and WLNE 6-1 properly. (Don't ask; I don't have that list and it's likely that no list will ever be made public for legal reasons.)
So, the bottom line, I bought a $500 TV in late 2007 with a built in tuner that will not receive 10-1 and 6-1. What to do? I guess I will have to be satified with 10 or 6 analog for now, or go buy a different make and model TV. Bummer. (I'm not interested in OTA.)
Credit where credit is due - COX went way above and beyond to help me. Amy was helpful; someone in enginnering called me and the enginner who was dispatched was helpful. Thank you COX for your help in diagnosing the issue. What have I learned - about all I can do is buy something from someplace with a good return policy, see if it works and return it for something else if it doesn't.
RPMcCormick 06-03-09, 07:49 PM (snip) ... about the breakup issue I was having with WJAR 10-1 and WLNE 6-1 when the signal is being received by an HDTV with a built in tuner and no HD set top box. ... a engineer (not the usual cable guy, but someone from COX HQ in Warwick) came to my house about three weeks ago and tested my signal feeds with some very sophisticated equipment. (I'm not interested in OTA.)I've read through your posting a couple of times - and this really sounds like a problem with the cable company and not the local broadcaster.
I don't know firsthand how the COX system in RI is setup (maybe someone else who does know can shed some light) ... but normally cable providers will take the digital bit stream from the broadcaster and put that up on their plant in a 256QAM channel. Sometimes they retransmit just the packets for the audio and video and in other cases the bit stream on the cable plant is identical to what is being transmitted by the broadcaster. Multiple stations (or channels) are normally placed in a 256QAM cable RF channel to make the most efficient use of the spectrum (and maximize what can be offered).
there is a known issue with some TVs and their tuners now with WJAR 10-1 and WLNE 6-1 because of the carrier frequency they both use (I think 74-1 and 74-2 - something like that.)Sounds like this would be more accurately noted that the issue is some TV's are not able to tune WJAR and WLNE because of a compatibility with how COX has delivered them on their cable plant. If it is indeed a known issue with what 256QAM channel these stations are on ... one solution would be to move that 256QAM channel to a different cable RF channel number that is compatible with the sets, like yours, that are having problems.
There are other possibilities as well and they include: the local station's digital signals are being processed (groomed or rate shaped) by COX in such a way that the station's bit stream is disrupted, oversubscription of the 256QAM channel or issues with handling VBR (variable bit rate encoding).
Having said that - and out of fairness - are there any known issues with WJAR-DT 10.1 and WLNE-DT 6.1 reception over the air? Knowing that would help substantiate whether this issue is with the local broadcaster or the cable provider's delivery of the signals they are retransmitting. FWIW both WJAR-DT and WLNE-DT are transmitting from the same site - and antenna - as their transmitters are combined at WJAR's facility. (If you can receive one of these then it is quite probable you should be able to receive the other equally as well.)
Lastly - I realise you are not interested in OTA reception - but do you have the ability to receive these stations OTA just to verify whether your set has a problem with their over the air transmissions?

Thanks for taking time to provide an interesting and detailed response. I trust you don't have a vested interest in this matter and that you're unbiased. Don't be offended, please. I do appreciate you articulating your expertise. I am just Joe-average consumer, I'm just trying to get the best possible signal for the service fee that I'm paying. To be candid, the science of all of this is way over my head. While I have a lot of technical skills, digital cable TV is not one of them. Maybe the "carrier" that the engineer was talking about is different in the world of cable versus OTA. Beats me.
I do not know if receiving OTA signal prooves anything. If it does, I don't know that that would be. I do recall having a discussion with the engineer about this, but I don't recall the details. That said, I didn't pester the guy about OTA when he works for the cable company. Regarding OTA, I don't want to have to change channel signal source every bleepin' time I change channels. I cannot get the channels I want to watch OTA. Dish is not an option due to nearby obstructions. FIOS trunk lines stop 6 houses away because my neighborhood has underground wiring. So, it's COX and me, for better or worse.
As you suggested, an OTA test might be telling. I did a re-scan today of the OTA channels. But I did not change antenna direction (to be open and honest, it's in the attic and it's nasty up there). On the Samsung TV (the one with aforementioned issue), here are the OTA signal results:
2-1 - no signal
6-1 - no signal
10-1 - breaks up badly (updated after another test)
12-1 - good signal
28-1 - good signal
36-1 & 36-2 - good signal
64-1 - good signal
I also get a few other channels but I don't remember what they were offhand. If the above test results are compelling, I don't know what to make of it.
The test results of a direct coax feed from COX is:
2-1 - good signal
6-1 - signal breaks up
10-1 - signal breaks up badly
12-1 - good signal
28-1 - good signal
36-1 & 36-2 - good signal
64-1 - good signal
So, what does all of this mean? I hope it's not a case of COX and WJAR/WLNE pointing fingers at each other. Maybe something magical will happen. We'll see.

This exact thing happened to me about a year ago and it took quite a few calls and service visits, plus a formal complaint with the RIPUC (Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission & Division of Public Utilities and Carriers), which initially did not yield total satisfaction, despite a personal call from one of Cox's Vice Presidents.
The long and short of the story is that Channels 6 and 10 always seem to be grouped on the same frequency set at Cox QAM (direct HDTV tuner reception), and somehow the signal strength seems to be just a tad weaker than that of the other channels.... of course the Cox boxes will pick it up fine and blame was placed on my SONY BRAVIA TV tuner, as well as other tuners of other TV makes that had the same exact issues... but what basically happened to FIX THIS is that Cox needs to make sure all lines to and in your house are as loss-free as possible (and no, a signal booster will not help!), and then, due to my insistent complaints over several months, the matter was finally escalated to the technical crew who checked some higher-up distribution point for the neighborhood (East Side), which had some loose or old connections and simply did not provide the area with a strong enough signal for most TV tuners.... again, the Cox boxes are always getting everything but the whole point is to save that expense and use the public transmission rights you have to use your own TV tuner for the broadcast HD channels :)
So, just get ready for a long and involved uphill fight, tell them to check all of your connections and signal strength readings, and then, most importantly in my opinion, the distribution node/point further up in the signal chain!
Good luck!
In general I have no love for cable companies but it's hard to blame COX for a weak signal if their boxes work OK with it. If a lot of TV's can not get a signal a cable box can, giving the problem a lot of publicity might eventually shame the TV manufactures into improving them. The one place the blame can not be placed is on the TV stations.

They did all of that. The engineer checked all of the distribution points, nodes or whatever you call them. They checked all of the lines. They followed the so-called yellow brick road. I am satisfied that COX did what they can do. And no, I am not preparing for a fight. With who? With what information? Life's too short to get worked up about this crap. Again, I am no expert at this stuff. And I doubt everyone in this forum is too.
You say this exact this happened to you a year ago? Well, according to the engineer WJAR and WLNE did something having to do with frequencies by them sometime in February or March or this year. So, it's not the same deal as you had.
I am not going to debate this. I don't know enough about this anyhow. All I can say is that I was told by COX that it's a WJAR/WLNE problem with a carrier 74.1 and 74.2 or something like that which is an issue with some tuners on some TVs. Mine is one of those problem models. Tough luck for me, I guess.

I don't have any vested interest other than to understand what may be happening and help with some of the technical aspects. (I'm actually in western Massachusetts and not affiliated with any of the companies involved.)
Sorry about maybe being too technical ... these forums are often read by broadcasters and cable / satellite providers - and sometimes folks from these organizations post here as well (like Amy from COX). Hopefully some technical aspects here may help with further research and possible resolution?
WLNE's over the air digital signal is on the frequencies channel 49. WJAR's OTA digital signal is on the frequencies of channel 51.
All full power TV stations were assigned a second channel for their digital transmissions many years ago and they have been transmitting in both analog and digital formats for quite some time. In the case of WLNE and WJAR - the digital channels they were assigned are one in the same where they are now today and will be into the future. The recent changes in February (and again coming in a few weeks) doesn't have anything to do with these two stations (other than the cessation of their analog transmissions). As consumers we'll still know WLNE as channel 6 and WJAR as channel 10.
If you're interested in all these channel assignments there is a nice table on the NECRAT site: http://www.necrat.com/dtv.html
Cable companies can get the local broadcaster's digital signal in one of two ways: either from a direct feed from the station to the cable company (like over a fibre connection) or via an OTA (over the air) receiver at the cable company - which would work very similar to what you'd be doing if you watched OTA digital television at home.
Either way - the cable company then takes the stations' digital signals and has to bundle them up for use on the cable plant. They do this by re-encoding that digital information on *different* channels (or carriers) and send those signals down their fibre and coax plants to your house or apartment.
Many televisions can receive the digital OTA signals (ATSC) as well as digital signals on cable systems that are sent in the clear (typically 256QAM).
The cable system has many "carriers" on it - each one is like a channel. Some may have the old analog TV standard (NTSC) ... in which case one carrier = one channel = one TV signal. Not very efficient. And sometimes not very good quality ...
For digital signals - the cable company can use the 256QAM standard to put a lot of digital information into the same space that a single analog channel would occupy. The actual number of digital channels that can be crammed into a 256QAM carrier depends on whether they are standard or high definition - more accurately - it depends on how many bits per second they consume. You could find a couple of HD channels or five or six SD channels.
BTW: even though QAM (which stands for quadrature amplitude modulation) is a standard - there is no FCC mandate that requires television manufacturers to include it. (The government does have a mandate that all televisions now support the OTA ATSC digital standard.) Most recent televisions will support both ATSC and 256QAM.
So it sounds like at your house WJAR and WLNE have been bundled up into cable channel 74. The carrier here is COX's - the digital information on that carrier comes from the local broadcasters.
Interesting that you only have problems with those two (6.1 and 10.1) stations. As another poster noted - there is the possibility that the issue could be one of signal level of the carrier used on the cable system to deliver 6.1 and 10.1. It may be in spec for the cable equipment ... but maybe not sufficient for your set (and other sets that have this issue).
Or - it may have something to do with the actual digital information ... as I mentioned before. Don't worry about those technical details; even if you knew what the issue is its likely something would have to be done elsewhere to remedy the situation.
Thanks for trying the off-air tests ... looks like you don't have a good OTA signal for either of the affected stations ... so not much more we can conclude from that. What I was looking for was whether the set that has reception problems when connected to COX has problems with those stations over the air. But for a fair test you'd have to have solid OTA signal reception of those stations.
One additional (crazy?!) idea: if the affected TV is easy to transport ... and you know someone else somewhere else on the COX system try your set there. Note: go somewhere further than in your immediate vicinity. See if the problem is reproduced in another town with the same set.
Lastly - consider dropping a note to the local stations. Although they may not have the staff and resources to reach out to you personally ... they may take an interest if there is a perception that the problem is more global than just a viewer or two. Most broadcasters and cable companies have good rapport at the engineering levels - as they have to rely on each other to help bring their signals to consumers!
Good Luck!

But I was also was told if a channel like WGN Supperstation was asked for by lots of people maybe cox would carry it but again i could be wrong Amy please tell me if am wrong on that but is it true the more a channel requested the better the chances a channels added to the lineup
ransaldi 06-05-09, 02:18 PM Rico- You were given some bad information. Other Cox markets have added WGN and others will soon add it. I would not be surprised to see it get added to this area in the future. You could call Cox or any service provider for that matter and get a different story every time.

RPM: Just a note to thank you for your information. You get an emmy for high volume typing. While complicated, it was educational. Your explanation now has me doubting what's the real source of the problem. I'm less confused, but now more unsure. And yes, technical reps do snoop this site from time to time - that's a good thing actually.
It should be noted that 6-1 and 10-1 (and 10-2, etc.) are just fine with the other TV in the house (Panasonic 42in. plasma) when connected via direct COX coax (just as the problem set was connected.) It will take some effort, but I may try to get the antenna outside, get it grounded, re-aimed and so forth to see what happens OTA. Getting it grounded appears to be a little involved.

Thanks for having someone investigate this issue. It looks as if JamesF and I have similar problems and both reside in NK. If there is any additional information you need please let us know.
Dan, can you send me a DM with your contact informatio: address and phone number where you can be reached? Based on the results of our tests at JamesF's home, we'd like to conduct a similar test at your residence. Perhaps that will help shed light on the debate folks are having about why this issue is happening int he first place. Thanks.

I will find out our plans for WGN.
I cannot say the more it's requested, the better the chances. We do track customer channel requests as one way to capture customer demand. It's one of many factors used to determine channel carriage. Importantly, cost is another important factor. As you're all aware, we have to obtain permission from programmers to their carry channels and then pay programming fees to them.
Hope that helps.
amq6240 06-08-09, 05:38 PM Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you know that my colleague, Eric Wagner, will be the new contact for Cox New England on AVS Forum. Eric's username is EJW_CoxNE. I have some new responsibilities that are limiting my ability to respond to your questions in a timely manner.
Much like I've tried to do, Eric will seek to answer the group's questions, assist with technical issues and provide information about products and services (new HD channels, service enhancements, etc.).
Eric actually was a member of this Forum (2005) long before he joined Cox New England (2009). So, he's probably more qualified to address your questions than I'll ever be!! ;)
I'm sure I'll check in from time to time - making sure lawrencewelk, jakemgold and sbmurphy are behaving themselves:cool:, and that everyone's issues with their QAM tuners are taken care of once and for all!
Thanks,
AQ

After the changeover at 11:59 PM, I and many viewers lost WHDH-DT 7.1 and 7.2 when they switched from RF42 to RF7, even those fairly close to the Needham tower. Anyone else here using OTA DTV lost this station, too? The Boston OTA board as well as radio-info boards have several messages regarding this situation.
No WHDH in R.I. with dedicated large VHF that showed a snowy analog 7.
Analog Boston UHF stations with way more snow lock in fine with digital. Lower band VHF not good for DTV.
Back to channel 10 with the lipsync problems. :(

Davesrave 06-13-09, 08:16 PM No 7.1 or 7.2 here in Westport, Ma. I used to get it fine.
RoyGBiv 06-14-09, 09:51 AM I have no problem getting WHDH after the transition in Pawtucket using a Radio Shack VHF/UHF antenna in my attic. With my D* receivers it has a signal strength of 100%!
