Cubbies_26 01-27-08, 09:39 AM I'm hoping it also gets added on Verizon....since a lot of other Verizon areas have RSNs in HD it should happen for us, also.
Have you heard that Comcast Sportsnet Chicago will broadcast both home and road games in HD for the Cubs/Sox this season----just another reason I'm hoping they add the HD version of this channel to Comcast sooner than later
bari_old_dad 01-27-08, 11:09 AM Based on the diagram that I said it looked like the signal is very strong to the South West. This verifies what John W said something in an earlier post <snip>
I'm about 45 minutes south of Hicksville
I am a bit further out - about 60 miles near Wapak. Like others, I get 33 (WISE) 21 (WPTA) and 15 (WANE) along with the PBS broadcast - WFWA with good reliability. I have never seen a peep from the FOX affiliate. I am using the AntennaCraft MXU59 with a CM7777 preamp.
As I read this thread, I see guys within 10 miles who are struggling to get it. So, you are blazing a new trail I suppose and we will be very interested to hear how it works out. If you haven't tried them, SummitSource (http://www.summitsource.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=BLUE%20ZONE&page=1&sort=3a)and SolidSignal (http://www.solidsignal.com/antennas/)have some good prices on this stuff.
If you have an email from the Fox affiliate - I would be willing to write them as well. It helps to copy their sales manager, I think, as they like to be able to show their customers how far their ads are reaching. Especially where you are - I imagine Ft Wayne is the "big" city of choice for any out-of-the-ordinary shopping.
I know it's a high price to pay...but I've heard from a person in the Wizards' front office that Champp's and Cheesecake Factory have inquired about being a part of the Harrison Square project downtown. I would assume they would have the same set-up as in Indy...so we might get some good examples for everyone else to follow.
Prediction: If Cheesecake Factory goes in, it will draw far more people than the Wizards (lower-tier Single-A) annually.
terry1700 01-27-08, 12:54 PM Pine Valley Bar and Grill also has HD.
Great. The list is expanding.
Also, I'm assuming (hoping) that Granite City Brewery will have HD, and I think they open on Tuesday. Being the team player that I am, I will volunteer for the arduous task to stop by and check out their TVs and brewskis and report back.

Saw an article in one of the regional newspapers in town and it said they would have many flat screens...hopefully they are tuned to HD. Thanks for checking!

I was there on Saturday for lunch (Free lunch to help train the employees.:)) and they had the IU game on on CBS (Several flatscreens), but not in HD.

I stopped in at Granite City tonight and confirmed what Bill reported..... no HD on the flat screens. Another missed opportunity. Can't say that I'm surprised.

The Woodland Lounge off of Dupont had several flatscreens. Farily decent place on the inside. I was sitting at the bar and watching the X Games on ESPN HD. However, it didn't look like HD to me and didn't have the ESPN pillar boxes so they are probably using composite for the hookups. How hard can this be? Heck the Shady Nook off of Parnell has HD.

diehard_1955 02-02-08, 12:26 PM Well here it is the day before the super bowl and still no signal from 55.
Good thing I can get Fox 28 out of South Bend. (don't mean to rub it in either)
The more I think about this, the more it really makes really makes me sad to see that this makes OTA look really bad. I know there is alot of discussion here about cable and sat, but you are really missing out on the OTA experience with the better HD transmission and the extra sub channels that you get with OTA (plus it's FREE!!!!!!). I have gotten HD from South Bend long before Fort Wayne even started transmitting, so I have seen a big improvement. One thing I see is everyone is missing out on how great the OTA is. With the problems with Fox 55 just puts a bad taste in peoples mouth because of the stupidity of one station.
I'm lucky since I can get both South Bend and Fort Wayne, but the one thing is, South Bend is 20 miles further away, but their signal strength is far better than any station in Fort Wayne. Plus the news broadcasts are so much better. So what does that say about Fort Wayne? Then I see the fighting about the smoking ban and the stadium downtown, boy o boy, what a sad state of affairs Fort Wayne is in.
I have lived here all my 50 some plus years and I know there are alot of smart people here, but my god, lets get a grip on the present and the future and bring this town up to where it belongs and deserves to be.
If Shady Nook can do it, then......... enough said.

I think Fox 55 should be complemented for there promise to brodcast in HD prior to the superbowl. For a lot of us who can pick up the signal in the Fort Wayne area, the picture is great! For others that can't pick up the signal I guess will have to wait until this summer when they go full power. Its really not Fox's fault they don't have the funds allocated from Nextel yet for the update. But they did come through on their promise to be in HD by the super bowl. So thank you Fox 55, alot of us appreciate it.

Regardless of who is to blame, 55 should have had their digital signal at a higher power before this point in time. I don't think the folks involved, either local or at corporate, deserve kudos for finally doing something half-assed that everybody else in town had been doing much better and much sooner.

Enough said but well said. Fort Wayne just doesn't match up in many ways to other towns it's size. I travel the midwest for work so I am not just blowing smoke. You are absolutely correct about the news broadcasts also. I wish I could get South Bend stations... Consider yourself lucky.
Openwheel 02-03-08, 12:55 PM After much tweeking and trying various antennas I am finally able to get WFFT for the Super Bowl. I have many hours in this.
I live near Coldwater and Gump Road, which is 9.7 NNE miles from the tower. I am in the worst direction from the tower according the link with signal map.
I tried the Starship antenna from Radio shack and signals were 2/3 of what I had with the Terk 55. The Terk 55 is indoors.
I couldn't get it with the Terk 55 at first. But after many many tries I finally found a sweet spot and am pulling a solid picture at 63% as measured by my Dish VIP 622. Signals are as follows.
15.x 100%
21.x 100%
33.x 100%
39.x 78%
36.1 63%
Picture has been steady since Friday evening.

Cubbies_26 02-04-08, 10:29 AM I haven't watched too much Fox HD since it has been available, but did anyone else notice that every time they displayed the call letters of Fox 55 during the big game, the picture went to standard def for a couple of seconds until the graphic had disappeared? I have never noticed this on any other HD stations, and just wondering what was going on. That being said, I'm still very thankful we were able to view this game in HD.

Yeah, I'm no techie, but I assume that's all a part of the "not quite there yet" portion of the switch. I saw the same thing. It's almost as if they don't have a HD version of their logo so they have to fire up the ol' SD signal w/ overlay for that brief (thank goodness) 10 second station ID.
And as luck would have it, my TV was smart enough to pull 66% signal so I could watch the game, but sadly the card in my MythTV sucked and I could only get 7% lock. Couldn't timeshift or pause the game...oh well...I can't complain. At least I saw it in HD! And what a game, I might add!!!

I had the same problem last night. It also happened during the Terminator preview. MythTV wouldn't lock on but I ccould manually tune the channel just fine. I think it might have something to do with PSIP data coming from the station (or lack there of) but I really don't know for sure. I know I had more than enough signal, so that wasn't the cause.
I just checked 36.1 a few minutes ago and had no problem getting a lock so hopefully terminator will record without issues tonight.
If anyone has any idea what might be causing this I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Cubbies_26 02-04-08, 10:42 PM Anyone know if/when local comcast will be adding more HD channels? If so, what are they?
I have been calling and trying to request that Comcast adds Comcast Sportsnet Chicago in HD to the lineup, and I actually spoke to an operator last week that told me I should look for it sometime later this year. Unfortunately when I followed up that call and spoke with a few other operators, none of them had heard about that channel addition---makes me think I was likely lied to.

Sounds like they don't know how to run thier splicer. The way the unit works is the local station logo is loaded in the splicer unit that comes from FOX, so when ID's are called up, there's no local user intervention necessarily needed, and in fact, there should be no local processing equipment in the chain. The whole setup was engineered so local ops can't screw it up (however they appearently didn't consider WFFT would be behind the controls)
Again, glad you guys are getting somethin' resembling HD from FOX...

Very much so! I wonder how well it will improve the look of the non-HD channels...
gocubs2231 02-10-08, 08:35 AM This was quoted from the verizon fios thread on the Broadband Report....hope it's correct!
"I was told by Terry Denson, VP of Programming for FiOS that 30 HD channels would be added in April and 30 in June. I was also told that the Big Ten Network(in HD also) would be added in April and the Comcast Sports Chicago would be HD. Good for Cubs games."
martian21 02-10-08, 06:09 PM Please forgive me for venturing off topic a little. Did Comcast change their analog (limited basic) channel line-up recently? For example I used to get ABC Family on channel 11 and now it's no where to be found.
If anyone has any info please let me know. I'll now return this thread to HDTV discussion.

It had to be on their end. I had high 80s on my Mythtv setup and nice HD before SB Sunday. Go to watch the game and 55% and partial lock (L) only. All last week, same % and partial lock. Sunday morning (as I was getting ready to build the antenna mentioned earlier in this thread to replace a 20 year old YAGI I found in my attic from previous owner or two or three), I tuned once more to take a before shot of the OSD saying 55% partial lock and the damn thing comes up 88% and full Lock (LAMGV). I'm not sure what was going on but I don't think it was my setup and it sucked having to watch the super bowl in sd on a different system.

I figured they aimed it at the station GMs house for SB Sunday.
martian21 02-11-08, 08:45 PM ABC Family is channel 41 now..
I checked Schedules Direct and they had it listed as 41 also. When I tried to tune it in all I got was snow. Guess limited basic just got a little more limited. Now that I get FOX in HD and ABC Family is gone (wife likes that channel) there is no longer a reason to keep Limited Basic and thus no longer a reason to keep Comcast. Looks like I'll be giving Verizon a call to sign up for their 15/2 service.
Thank You Comcast - Thank you soooo much!

terry1700 02-13-08, 08:06 PM HD in Area Bars/Restaurants
Add Hooters to the list.
I was there for lunch today, and this time I remembered to check out the TVs. I saw Roger Clemens testifying in glorious HD.
Cubbies_26 02-14-08, 08:43 AM Did anyone notice that Comcast is now broadcasting CNN HD on channel 213? I didn't get a message on my digital box telling me about the addition, so I kind of just stumbled upon it last night. Still, it's good to see Comcast is trying to catch up with the number of HD channels they are offering----it is a bit frustrating though, as I found a link yesterday to the Comcast HD lineup in Warsaw, and they have a much better selection of channels than we do in Fort Wayne (including Comcast Sportsnet Chicago HD).

I noticed that too. Par for the course. I didn't see any notification when they added the last set of channels (USA, SCIFI, etc) either. Now if we can just get FX I'll be happy for a while.

Yes, when they had non-high def programming. Even with Comcast.
Cubbies_26 02-21-08, 08:44 PM Did anyone else see this article about Comcast---it says something about them offering between 50 and 60 HD channels by the end of the year, and over 1000 On Demand titles. It sounds good, but what are the chances of it happening? If it's true, maybe I'll finally get to see my Cubs in HD on either Comcast Sportsnet Chicago HD or WGN HD. Here is a link to the article:

The article says switched digital service will be in 20% of its footprint by the end of the year. I doubt Fort Wayne fits in this footprint and switched video would be required to increase the bandwidth. Just a guess...

It looks like the 50-60 is TOTAL. We already get ~35 if you count the locals and the HBO/Showtime stuff. Then again, I doubt we'll see that here anyway.

I totally agree with your feelings---I have lately been on a bit of a mission trying to get Comcast here in FW to add some channels to the lineup, and it has been very frustrating. It has lead me to researching the channel lineups that Comcast offers in other cities, and FW is certainly lacking in comparison. Even towns with smaller populations (Warsaw for one) have channel lineups that put FW's to shame. I have tried to contact our local office via telephone to complain, but I can't seem to ever get connected to anyone local when I call in. Maybe the increased competition of Fios will force Comcast to get its act together, but so far it hasn't worked.

Old ENGjas hasn't posted in some time. Hope he didn't get caught up in some austerity program.
oryan_dunn 03-05-08, 12:09 AM For those two out there who care, Mediacom in Auburn added several HD channels:
WFFT-HD
CNN HD
TNT HD
TBS HD
What's interesting here is that I know that Mediacom in Auburn gets its digital feed from Fort Wayne via an antenna. I can only surmise that they have one hell of a tower/antenna setup to get it reliably.

NoToLowPower 03-09-08, 09:10 PM So I took a cue from the South Bend thread and looked up the DTV transition reports from the FW stations (use the FCC's TV query, find the digital channels, click Application List and click Application next to the file from February that's "ACCEPTED FOR FILING."
All of the full powers will be moving to where their DTV channels are now.
WPTA, WISE, and WFWA are done. WANE hasn't started the final facilities, they're estimated to run up to the wire, 2/17/09, but considering pretty much everyone can get the signal, nothing to be too concerned about.
WFFT has neither completed nor started building their final digital facilities, no big surprise there. The expected construction date: 10/31/08. So much for summer of '08. Tower work is supposed to be done by the end of September.
"ALSO NEEDS RF SYSTEMS, ENCODERS, MICROWAVE SYSTEMS AND POSSIBLY A NEW TRANSMITTER BUILDING."
Hmm. Microwave systems, what for?
"RESPONDENT IS AWARE THAT ITS EXPECTED CONSTRUCTION DATE IS BEYOND ITS CURRENT CONSTRUCTION DEADLINE AND WILL FILE FCC FORM 337 ON OR BEFORE 3/19/2008 TO REQUEST ADDITIONAL TIME TO CONSTRUCT THE FINAL, POST-TRANSITION FACILITIES FOR WFFT-DT."
FCC should have brought down the thunder a long time ago. This is comical.
amadare 03-11-08, 03:07 PM Can the MythTV users verify they have WFFT or not? Changing to the channel has been on and off Lock with 80+ % and Partial Lock with < 50% since the beginning of the year. Right now (for about 2-3 weeks now) I'm at the < 50% with Partial Lock. A channel scan shows the same < 50% signal with a timeout and "No tables" message. Just want to make sure it is larger than me.
Thanks
Bobby

why does this news not surprise me at all? some things never change.
so does anyone know what the 'punishment' will be for WFFT for it's constant procrastination? I'm assuming that since it's the FCC there will be endless 'suggestions' and weak threats for a few years until WFFT finally upgrades? /sigh

Sorry, hadn't checked here in a couple days. I just tuned Fox at a little after 10 tonight (3/13) and I got 72% (I'm ~2 mi. away). It locked almost instantly (didn't take any longer than other channels). Hope this helps.

cameraready 03-26-08, 08:51 AM Found this other site for checking transmitter locations and power levels. Kind of like antennaweb, but more graphical. They have a Google earth plugin that shows all the towers in the area and their coverage areas. The only problem I noticed was that they are basing the data on FCC filings, not necessarily what it currently being broadcast. They show WFFT-DT being a strong signal which we all now is not the case at the moment.

Over the winter we put up an outside antenna on the house and improved our reception of 15 digital. Lately though we are seeing increasingly frequent drops to 0 from the 70s and loss of signal. Anyone else?

Anybody having issues with the EPG on WANE-DT? Someone has emailed in that it is an hour off. I checked it at home just now and it appears to be fine. I want to make sure its an isolated incident and not a problem that the tech on duty needs to take a gander at.
EDIT:
I see the problem with my second receiver (my plasma at home doesn't show time.) We are aware and the crew that is on duty there now is working to correct the issue. These problems ALWAYS pop up on my days off! (Some in my department would argue that is a conspiracy theroy!)

To everyone else: in attempting to fix the EPG yesterday, we had another piece of equipment flake and it caused some reception issues during the afternoon. Those issues have since been resolved.

Cubbies_26 04-13-08, 09:26 AM Funny this would come up---I started watching the Yankees vs Red Sox Game on Fox HD yesterday, but for whatever reason, the game wasn't being broadcast in HD. I called my Dad in Chicago and asked if he was getting the game in HD, and sure enough, they were getting an HD feed. I then picked up the phone and called Fox 55 and left a message stating that the HD feed wasn't working on the baseball game. I don't know if it had anything to do with my call or not, but about 10/15 minutes later, they switched over to HD. Though I do wish the game had been in HD the whole time, I was surprised and a little impressed that Fox might have listened and acted on my concerns. Maybe things are changing over at Fox..........I guess time will tell.

I wouldn't exactly say I'm batting 1.000. I was bugging them (along with seemingly everyone else on this board) for over a year to make the switch to HD before they finally did in December. They seem to be on a different clock than the rest of us, but it says on their webiste they'll get around to boosting their signal by summer of 08, so I guess that could be anytime from June-August.

I doubt I matter much to them, but I switched channels because their signal sucks. Oh, and I didn't switch to their analog station either. I don't even have an analog tuner hooked up any more so either they work in digital or I don't watch!
There actually are a couple NBC shows I used to follow but haven't been watching this new season because I missed half of the last season due to their transmitter issues.
EDIT: Seems like Every night 33 gets a little bit worse. The last couple nights Frasier on 33.2 has been unwatchable. At this point my money is on FOX to go full power before 33 gets their problems worked out.

Rex Manning 06-05-08, 11:16 AM Hello all,
I am moving to Fort Wayne in the near future and was hoping someone could provide me with some real brief cliff notes on the HD situation there. I've skimmed through the last several pages in the thread but still had some questions. For a frame of reference, we'll likely be living somewhere along the west side of town, and we'll have DirecTV and currently use a Silver Sensor for OTA signal.
Which locals are broadcasting in HD? Is the signal strong enough that hopefully the Silver Sensor will pull them in?
It appears that D* does not provide locals in HD, is this correct?
Also, for those that have the MLB Extra Innings package: are there any teams' games you don't receive due to the screwy MLB blackout rules? I remember seeing that Fort Wayne was claimed by several teams and from what I've read about other markets D* doesn't always provide the RSN's for all teams claiming an area and the game is still blacked out on MLBEI.
Thanks in advance for any help!
martian21 06-06-08, 09:30 AM CBS is at or close to full power so you should have no problem getting them OTA. I never have any problems with their digital signal.
ABC is at full power and I also never have any problems with them.
NBC is at full power however their digital transmitter is all messed up resulting in very frequent blocking, skips, and full signal drops to the point where more often than not it's unwatchable for me.
PBS is at full power and I never have any reception issues, however they do not broadcast in HD. They choose to split their digital signal into 4 muticasts instead of carrying the HD feed. It is rumored that this decision was financially motivated in that they don't want to pay higher fees for rights to rebroadcast the HD feed.
FOX has been the local "whipping boy" for a long time now. They were the last station in town to go HD and they are still not at full power. In fact unless you live close to the tower farm (like I do) it's very hard to get FOX's digital signal without putting some serious cash into your antennae. They are supposed to go full power this summer so really it could be any time now. That said you won't catch anyone holding their breath on that. I do have to give FOX credit in that their HD signal has been rock stable for me even though it hovers just under 70% signal level at only 2 miles away.
Hope that helps.

gocubs2231 06-13-08, 08:57 PM I received my official letter from Verizon today in the mail. LOVE the channel lineup! Have read on other boards that more is to come as they are in the process of getting agreements with other channels in HD and even some that aren't broadcasting in HD yet.
Whatever the continuing problem with 33 digital is, it now affects the regular transmission apparently. Through our Dish Network receiver, whenever we experienced the 33 digital freeze we could go channel down to 33 SD as provided via Dish. Now, if the digital freezes, the sd is a colored screen. Would love to hear how THIS requires FCC approval to fix.

oryan_dunn 06-16-08, 11:11 PM Whatever the continuing problem with 33 digital is, it now affects the regular transmission apparently. Through our Dish Network receiver, whenever we experienced the 33 digital freeze we could go channel down to 33 SD as provided via Dish. Now, if the digital freezes, the sd is a colored screen. Would love to hear how THIS requires FCC approval to fix.
Simple, Dish probably switched over to cropping and down-converting the HD feed for the SD channel. They are going to have to do this by 2/17/09 anyways.

Yes, that is exactly what they had done. They have been told many times to stay with the analog signal until we get all the issues with the digital resolved. I talked to them yesterday and had them switch back to the analog.

Does this mean Fort Wayne is included in the 100 HD markets by the end of 2008?
Cubbies_26 06-19-08, 07:48 PM The Big 10 Network and Comcast finally make a deal

Now we will have to wait and see if Fort Wayne is included (we should be, but anyone who has dealt with the local Comcast office knows things are not as they should be).

A new channel 75 recently popped up on my receiver which is currently not available, but, is info about local digital channels "coming soon" to Dish. I have an antenna so this isn't a big deal for me, but, it would be shameful if there is a time period of ANY length when the digitals are supposed to be up on Dish but one or another can't be due to "technical difficulties".

I saw that channel as well. The only reason I'd like this is to get Fox in HD. I'd rather them add more national HDs, such as Speed and Fox News.
NoToLowPower 06-25-08, 09:33 PM 21-3 is back on, E/I law be damned, I guess? Kinda interesting to see them play around with the VIPIR before they go to air.
Also, WANE's got HD weather alerts now, so no more clean CBS feeds, but it beats dropping to SD for the sake of a minor storm in some far off county. jckrac, is that to keep the FCC off your back, or is that part of a conscious effort to move the entire news operation to HD?

Surpised you guys are just now commenting on the HD warning system, its been on for a while now.
I'm sure its a goal for the station to be completely HD (thats just my personal opinion, I don't get invited to the managers meetings for some reason! :) ) at some point down the road by involving newscasts. When that point is I couldn't tell you.

First I really saw of the county-by-county graphic was several days ago, at one point it was on the upconvert with no SD version under it even though it still appeared on analog. I'm almost certain it was off-network.

Boy, all I see now is the typical NBC fuzziness for a second right when they return to a live HD picture from something else. I'm in Huntington and haven't seen what you have.
Now, my pet peeve IS happening today. The Today Show is in HD from NBC, but, not on 33 today. Seems THIS is a tough problem to crack-and it shouldn't be.

Same for me. Its really cluttered things up, and its to the point that I've almost stopped using the guide ( at least until that they get rid of that "this channel has moved...") . I find myself going to the search function just to find the channel I'm looking for.
But, besides that, its great. Watching Versus in HD is like having a brand new channel, and I'm also enjoying Smithsonian HD.

One thing you might try is to hit the Guide button...hit the left arrow button and choose HD Channels. This only shows those channels and gets rid of all the other clutter. Of course, this won't work for the other areas of the guide, but I don't even go to them much anymore with the added HD. :D
Having the Viper-HD Radar back on 21-3 is great. One suggestion-take it off autopilot ragweed reports when I'm about to get blown away like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and PUT THE RADAR ON!

Signal strength using my cheap amplified indoor antennae went from upper 50's to upper 70's. I'm in Northern Huntington Co. I was having trouble getting digital 15 occasionally now it is solid. So happy this was done before the Colts season started. Thank You Ch. 15! Now if only Fox would get going.
For comparison:
I get 99-100 for 21, high 80's for 33 and high 60's for 39, Fox FW = zip.
East side of Huntington with an outdoor antenna and amp, went from low 70s to 99-100 via my Dish receiver.
Has anyone noticed if the link is better or not?
We have fined tuned "tweeked" the STL link for the didtal transmitter. I have not seen ant breakups myself.

I just flipped on 33.1 at about 1:45 pm Sunday (7/13) after seeing your post. Unfortunately I see no improvement in the signal (watched Beach Volleyball for about 15 mintues). Still lots of artifacting and signal drops. Signal drops are confirmed by the LED on my HDHomerun. I have a very strong signal and don't have any issues on any of the other channels (including 15.1 which is also 1080i) so I know it's not my antennae or my setup.
I'm sure you are extremely frustrated by now ENGjas. I hope you guys are able to get it worked out soon.

Its fine recently in Huntington and I sure as hell don't want him messing with it for one receiver. Anybody else out there?
martian21 07-15-08, 12:09 AM I just verified that I'm running the latest software and firmware for my HDHomerun and then I tuned 33.1 through the HDHomerun Config GUI on my PC and noticed something interesting. The HDHomerun provides indicators (as a percentage) for Signal Strength, Signal Quality, and Symbol Quality.
For WISE my Signal Strength is consistently a healthy 85% and my Signal quality is always in the low to mid 80% range. However, when tuned to WISE the Symbol Quality frequently dives from 100% to <25% and several times all the way to 0%. These drops in Symbol Quality always coincide with picture problems (some subtle, some severe). A few times while watching I noticed that Signal Quality dropped severely which was accompanied by fluctuations in Signal Strength between 65% and 85% and near total lose of picture.
I don't really know what any of this means or if it's in any way helpful but I do know that WISE is the only digital channel whose Symboll Quality (per my HDHomerun config display) is not constantly pegged at 100%. I watched every local channel for quite some time and WISE is the only channel whose Symbol Quality dropped at all.
Here are definitions of the three measurements from Silicondust, the makers of the HDHomerun:
Signal Strength (ss)
- raw power level as measured by the receiver
Signal Quality (snq)
- how clearly defined the digital data is
Symbol Quality (seq)
- Amount of correct or corrected data over the last second

I too was still having problems with WISE during the Wimbledon Finals and the beach volleyball. But after resetting my receiver (Directv HR20) I haven't seen any issues. Granted I haven't watched much TV, but it was pretty noticeable before.

I would suspect the longer they take the more folks put up towers to get FOX out of South Bend. I would encourage all those folks to NEVER come back and watch this pos station.
Hey, cheerleader. haven't seen you on this thread in a while. October is a summer month now?
Well that sucks.... Hopefully once DirecTV gets their new satellite all tested they turn on Fort Wayne soon. And hopefully that includes FOX... Last I heard they were supposed to start using the new satellite in August. Anybody know anything more than that?

They are currently testing the transponders on D11. Some over at dbstalk are predicting 7/30 as the day (best case), 8/13 as the worst case. Test channels have been spotted in the guide.
Now where that leaves us is the question.

aerial1 07-26-08, 09:22 AM Tower work on Wane dt-31 is complete for the current time. The new antenna is side mounted to the north side of the mast. It is below the top mounted analog antenna. I was told that it will stay that way for the foreseeable future. Power is now up to 317,000 watts e.r.p. As for Wise dt 19 they have a petition to move the location of the transmitter and antenna over to Wpta tv complex. This tower mess could have been solved with a new taller master tower with all channels located on one mast. Like normal other stations are building.

They currently take the signals over the air, then uplink the signal via satellite.

No one here at the station is having that trouble. I live 25 miles from the station and have about 90% signal strength. Depending where you are, you may be getting to strong of signal. This can show a low signal on your tuner also. Are you using any kind of amplified antenna?

martian21 08-12-08, 10:39 AM Thanks for the posts guys. It appears my problems were multi-tiered. I spent a couple hours checking my cabling and re-positioning my antennae to get the best possible signal for 33.1. With living so close it's amazing what just a couple degrees in positioning can do for your signal.
Anyway, I now have a solid, strong signal from WISE and did not see any more artifacts or drops last night while watching the Olympics!!!
My signal strength from WANE is about 10% lower since I repositioned but it's still high 80's and I'm not seeing any problems there so I think I'm good to go. It's nearly a 60 degree compass angle for me between WANE and WPTA / WISE, I'd previously been trying to "split the difference" but now that WANE is up to full power my best bet appears to be aiming it straight at WISE. I think my antennae is weaker at lower frequencies and WISE is the lowest (19) in the Fort Wayne market.

Cubbies_26 08-27-08, 02:26 PM Has anyone else noticed that Comcast has started moving channels around---for instance, WGN America moved from 53 to 99 and FX moved from 32 to 16. Will this free up bandwidth space for possible HD additions, or is this just random channel number switching?
Rocket 57 08-27-08, 03:13 PM Yeah i noticed this also i see they put the big 10 network on ch 53, hopefully they'll add csn chicago so we can watch the sox and cubs in hi def soon.

You read my mind---I am hoping both CSN Chicago HD and WGN HD are added so we can watch both first place baseball teams the last month of the season.
DirecTV has had CSN Chicago HD all season and now with the new bird in the sky I thought WGNHD would be one of the first additions. So far, no dice! That sucks. Not sure what's holding it up.
Rocket 57 08-29-08, 12:22 AM Well look at that, csn on cable channel 201 sweet!

Really? Are you talking about Comcast? I can't believe they finally added CSNC HD. I am out of town until next week, so I won't get to enjoy it. If the Cubs have anymore games like tonight, I'm glad we'll get to see most of them in HD.

I just spoke with a Comcast CSR asking about CSNC HD, and she could "neither confirm or deny that it had been added to the channel lineup". So if you could confirm that you are talking about Comcast adding this station on channel 201, I would appreciate it. Thanks
billsoftball 08-30-08, 03:04 PM Yes, It is on... channel 201 as stated.

Thanks so much---I tried to verify on some websites that have channel listings but none were updated with that information. If Comcast can next add WGN HD, we will be all set on the sports front.
Is there a list anywhere of all the qam channels comcast broadcasts. I have a couple HDTVs without a cable box, when I scan for digital channels it picks up a couple hundred, but vast majority have nothing on them, it's a pain going through them one at a time.

Go here http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/channels and put in your zip code. It's not totally accurate, but helps.

It's nearly a year old now so I'm not sure if it's even remotely relevant but I went through every QAM channel on Comcast one at a time and listed my findings in this post:

Well, first night of the NFL regular season and the sound on 33-1 -or maybe its an NBC issue-is ridiculously awful from the opening whistle and continues to be so deep into the third quarter.
Anyone else with 33 digital problems tonight?
Cubbies_26 09-05-08, 09:28 PM Anyone else with 33 digital problems tonight?
I have 33 HD through Comcast (channel 232), and the channel is frozen at 9:30 p.m. The non HD version (channel 13) seems to work fine.

Dead for me :(
Since we are talking about 33. Does anyone else have problems with fast motion scenes (aka sports) on 33.1? It just looks like the bit rate isn't high enough.

Yes, and when an HD picture comes back on there is some smearing. But, believe I've read elsewhere this may be an NBC thing.
Meanwhile-they are still off the air and the Colts opening regular season game is scheduled for broadcast on their air Sunday night.
Email received re:33---
Unfortunately, our main digital transmitter for WISE is down, and we're using a back-up/auxiliary transmitter that has a much shorter range as far as broadcasting goes. So unless you have Comcast, Verizon, or Dish or something like that, you'll likely only be able to pick up our analog signal for the time being. Our engineering crew hopes to have this fixed for tonight... but I have a feeling we'll be "hoping" for longer.
Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience! We'll have it back as soon as possible, I assure you.

When WNDU (South Bend) devoted practically all of their bandwidth to one HD sub during the Olympics, there was no scene-switching smear/blur on that station.* I haven't seen it since, so I can't tell you if the reinstated second subchannel causes a blur in SB, but the smearing on WISE definitely started when they added the MyNetworkTV sub.
* There was the usual high-motion blocking that's common to the NBC distribution chain.

I have experienced that both OTA and on FIOS.
bwohlgemuth 09-08-08, 05:30 PM Last night's HD was great at times, but anytime the NBC graphics came off of the screen, it was like a 480p signal.
Any news on WFFT? I can get the signal, if the weather is right at night....
topdogg069 09-08-08, 07:24 PM anybody know if any of our local stations are working on being able to carry syndicated programs in hd? i know jeopardy and wheel of fortune are already in hd and oprah, ellen, dr. phil, entertainment tonight and the insider all started hd today, but none of our locals show any of them in hd yet.

August 16th 21 televised a Colts game in HD that they were not receiving from any network.

Well, they are constructing something at the station, and I doubt it's a studio addition.

Well, I don't live in town so I don't know what they are doing out there. I guess the real test is tomorrow's Bears game.
tacosmith 09-14-08, 09:57 AM Has WISE said anything more about their main digital transmitter lately?
topdogg069 09-14-08, 01:05 PM where is my hd for the colts game on cbs?

Seconded.
It's not because of the "flood watch" (very conveniently placed over the score, mind you) is it?

Thirded. Maybe they were waiting until the Colts actually mounted some sort of offense before they flipped the switch. :p

SD makes it look that much worse!
Last drive was promising, though...

We are still waiting for the parts to be shipped out that are needed to complete repairs.

The game was not shown in HD on FOX halftime...so it must not be worthy of the few CBS HD cameras.

the pregame show was not in hd either. also college football yesterday was also not in hd on wane. i guess we will have to see when the patriots game comes on. like usual, our stations are prob having technical problems.
bwohlgemuth 09-14-08, 03:33 PM WFFT had a pretty good HD broadcast, but now that the storm has moved through, the signal has dropped. Lots of digital artifacts on the screen.
Go Bears!
topdogg069 09-14-08, 04:39 PM well no hd on the patriots game either. i sure hope they get whatever the problem is fixed before next sunday and def before the new season of shows starts
Guys:
We had our HD endcoder fail overnight Satuday overnight. Our entire engineering staff was here working on the issue about 3 Saturday morning.
To at least get pictures on the air, we brought back into service an older SD encoder that used to feed UPN. That is why everything you see is SD (including the flood watch, which was taken down by the weather staff when they arrived.)
We working as hard as we can to get this issue fixed, but obviously, that is kind of hard to do at 3 in the morning on the weekend. But we hope that we can correct the issue as soon as possible. Hang with us.

gocubs2231 09-14-08, 05:15 PM So what happens next February when all of these things don't work? Are they going to be able to send an analog signal then? (probably showing my ignorance here)

If this happens again (and sadly equipment failure happens) we can downcovert the HD and send it out the same way we are now.

When its their only signal, I assume there will be spares for spares on site. If not, they shouldn't have a license.
A brief update on the WANE HD:
We have a loaner encoder inbound and will have it later today. Hopefully, this loaner will do the trick and we will return to HD air quickly.
Rest assured it doesn't matter if its our analog or digital; if part of the "system" goes down, its a priority.
Thanks for hanging with us; with any luck, we'll be back up pretty quick.

that nice to hear. let us know when everything gets fixed. it was brutal having to watch the football games in sd.
The spare encoder is now online and working. We were up in HD towards the middle of the Bold and the Beautiful (the only source of daytime HD) and it looked and sounded great.

For what, to tell you its down or up?!?! :) Because it was obvious it was down judging by the switchboard on Sunday!
Anyone know what happened to 21 and 33 digital at 1:45 this afternoon?
Both lost all sub-channels. Analog was working fine. Do they share some facility or . . .
