satellitesteve 08-13-07, 09:59 PM Hello. Yes, we here in Huntington were having problems with most of the Fort Wayne channels this morning. I called and talked to Engineering at channel 15 this am and they said that all was normal there. About the only dig channels coming in here were the PBS channels. All cleared up by itself late morning. We run a 70 foot tower with the best antenna and pre-amp that money could get us.
Steve
satellitesteve 08-13-07, 10:04 PM On another note. Anyone else notice that the computer on channel 33-3 has been messed up all night? No time displayed and the forecast for every other town in the country but ours? We decided to call them and ask. The girl answering the phone said that yes they were aware of the problem but they could not fix it. I ask to talk to the Engineer on duty and she said that there was none. Ask if they had one on call for problems and she told me that no they do not.
Hmmm, can anyone spell serious budget cuts there or just poor management?
Steve

Yes, the computer for 33-3 was locked-up. There is always a engineer available (either at the station or on-call) to fix problems, but no one made the call to get it fixed. I fixed it this morning when I got in.
As for the other signal issues yesterday morning; This was caused by the atmosphere conditions. This happens every year around this time, bit is getting worse due to more digital stations coming up to full power along with more wireless signals abound.
terry1700 08-15-07, 09:43 AM As part of the announcement of the 2007-08 IU BB Schedule yesterday, the press release stated:
" During Big Ten play, IU will play on ESPN or ESPN2 seven times, on the Big Ten Network (BTN) on six occasions and on CBS twice. The final three games of the conference schedule will be assigned to one of the above-mentioned networks later in the season."
Viewers are going to be hollering for the BTN, so who's going to blink? Should be interesting.

A buddy of mine has not been able to pick up any QAM channels for several weeks, not even the local networks. He's since switched to an antenna to at least get the locals in HD.
terry1700 08-16-07, 07:39 AM With most TVs having only 1 RF input anymore, that can make it a bit of a hassle to add OTA (unless of course you rent a Comcast STB  ) .
My understanding is the FCC rules mandate that local broadcast channels can not be scrambled by cable providers. What is Comcast doing?

yea right, it must be the high power signal from WFFT that is doing all the interfering. LOL (just kidding)

Has 33 been having problems the last couple of days? You have been coming in very loud and clear accept for the last couple of days. The signal drops for quit some time and then comes and goes. How about sunspots and such. Has there been alot of that lately?
It sucks having to switch to the analog channels just to watch. Guess I have gotten spoiled, it is really hard to watch those rediculus pictures.
I hope by 2009 they have this fixed, right?

I believe you will see a completely different mindset when that is the only signal going out.

After running a full channel scan, it appears that they moved them to channels 71 and 73.

Does anyone know the status of Big Ten channel (and FSN Chicago HD) on FIOS?
If it Big Ten is added to the list it will be on the sports package. But they may hold off to see how Comcast and Big Ten plays out.
I think you are confusing FIOS with Comcast. Comcast wants to put it on their sports package..
Big Ten has made it clear that they want their channels on the main tier.
KennyB123 08-20-07, 12:16 PM If Comcast will move the NFL Network to the sports package, there isn't a chance in h-e-double hockeysticks that they would put BTN in their basic digital tier.
Quite honestly, I'm pretty surprised that anyone has put BTN in the basic tier, like DirecTV did... at around 2 dollars a month per subscriber, I thought ALL Cable/Sat companies would reject it into their sports package.
At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter what tier BTN wants to be in... the cable/sat companies have to agree to take a pretty good hit to do so. And we all know the greediness that is inherent with most of these companies...
One can only hope that FIOS picks it up on their regular tier as well. There has been no announcement made as to an agreement with Verizon though.

Speak for yourself. I don't want $2 for a channel that I will never watch.

I already pay about $.21 for each of the approximately 170 channels I don't watch but am force to have, so a $2 increase wouldn't bother me to add a channel that I would watch. (That would bump it up to about $.22 a channel)
I just wish I had a choice to not get the women's and children's channels that I never watch.

I know... I said that Comcast did not. My point was, if comcast can't keep NFL network in their regular tier, I didn't see BTN going in the regular tier either. But, nobody, including me, really gives a rip about comcast, I don't think. :)

Good luck on that... it probably won't happen anytime soon. Just bought a house a few months ago. It's weird... Comcast didn't seem surprised or try to convince me to stay when I called to cancel all my services with them. They weren't going to get anything from me, no matter what deal they scraped up, but I at least wanted to see what they'd say. But, at least it made for a painless, 2 minute cancellation.
Can anybody share their thoughts on the Vizio brand of LCD's? I am about to take the plunge of stepping-up to the world of LCD HDTV and have recently seen that Vizio has been doing some commercials. While I am a middle of the road purchaser, there have been times (we all get nailed once in a while) where a cheaper model of something has served me great. And the higher end model of something resulted in nothing but problems. I am currently looking at the 40" Sony Bravia.
a_greer 08-25-07, 04:37 PM I think you are confusing FIOS with Comcast. Comcast wants to put it on their sports package..
Big Ten has made it clear that they want their channels on the main tier.
This is a case study in why we need a-la-carte tv...and not just broken down by content type either, by individual channel, why should anyone who wants the BigTen network, or the NFL network be forced to take the utter crap bloat in the sports pack? and why should those wthout kids pay for all 32 Nickelodeons, and why should single guys pay for lifetime? and so on...the current system was great when there were 20-60 channels, but with 200-300, it is getting insain!
OK Rant over, I will go back to lurking in this thread :)
terry1700 08-26-07, 01:15 PM BTN
This is an interesting and recent interview w the BTN's president that was posted over in the main FIOS programing area. Its looks at least somewhat promising for FIOS customers looking for the BTN, but not for Comcast.
As an aside, I also think in this age of 100's of channels, some type of ala carte system would make sense.

Yet later on that quoted page Silverman says the rate in the eight states is "about a buck" and the out of state rate is "about a dime". Very close to the reported rates.
Channel 15, the home of the Colts essentially and of CBS-HD which is the best imho, is frustrating to me, even more so now. I have talked about getting 21, 33, and 39 just fine with my el cheapo indoor set up in Huntingon and tried to discover when 15 will be at the same power as the others. Didn't think I could really gripe much trying to pick it up as I am. But, have recently had a chance to visit on the southwest side of Huntington with someone who has an outdoor antenna on the house and they have 15 issues at times.
Does anyone anywhere know the status of 15 going to full power?
Thanks in advance.

I know that, George. But, whats the hold-up?
George Molnar 08-31-07, 08:59 PM I know that, George. But, whats the hold-up?The text with the associated filing mentioned interference with analog:
"DUE TO AN INTERFERENCE ISSUE WITH NTSC STATION WPXD, WANE-DT'S APPLICATION FOR MODIFICATION OF ITS DTV CONSTRUCTION PERMIT REMAINS PENDING (BMPCDT-20021002ACJ). AT THE END OF THE DTV TRANSITION AND THE CONVERSION OF WPXD TO DIGITAL FACILITIES, HOWEVER, THIS INTERFERENCE ISSUE WILL BE RESOLVED AND WANE-DT WILL BE ABLE TO BUILD-OUT ITS FULL, POST-TRANSITION DIGITAL FACILITIES. IN THE INTERIM, WANE-DT WISHES TO REPLACE ITS EXISTING ANTENNA AND TO INCREASE ITS CURRENT OPERATING PARAMETERS. THE NEW ANTENNA NOT ONLY WILL BE ABLE TO OPERATE AT THE PARAMETERS PROPOSED IN THE INSTANT REQUEST FOR STA, BUT ALSO WILL BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASE IN POWER NECESSARY FOR WANE-DT TO ACCOMPLISH ITS POST-TRANSITION DIGITAL FACILITIES, ONCE AUTHORIZED. ACCORDINGLY, THE PUBLIC INTEREST WILL BE SERVED BY GRANT OF THE INSTANT STA BOTH BY PERMITTING IMPROVED DTV SERVICE DURING THE TRANSITION AND BY FACILITATING WANE-DT'S INCREASE TO FULL DTV FACILITIES AT THE END OF THE TRANSITION."

so the hold up now seems interlinked with the sunset of analog date Feb. 18, 2009
Thanks, George. I should have been able to find that myself. I'm not too sure why the folks at 15 can't just explain that when you email them and ask.

It was in HD in between the last commercial break, but WISE-TV has always been a little slow on the draw of getting the ND games switched to HD. I've tried calling them and they just give me attitude that it's not their problem.
I sent a message via their web site earlier to both newsroom/tips and engineering. Also sent one on here to enjas who works there. After seeing your post on attitude I sent another to newsroom/tips. We'll see.
The halftime show and shots from ND stadium during halftime in HD, back to game coverage and its not. Makes no sense.
topdogg069 09-01-07, 05:48 PM yeah i know. ive tried calling them and couldnt get through to anybody. i also sent them same e-mails asking why. i remember last year that sometimes it would take a few minutes for them to switch to hd, but not the whole game.
Seems like they got the message.
My last message to the newsroom was-based on what enjas has said here-"You have an engineer on call, call him in response to the complaints you're getting on ND not in HD. Behave like a professional business."
If anyone happens to be watching tennis on WANE today, please note that due to the telethon, we are not filling CBS breaks as the automation system isn't set up to run breaks on the HD side only. So there will be periods of black.
Already getting slammed with calls about that very issue on the analog side where we are airing tennis on our LWS channel.
Hey, did you guys see Michigan get beat by Appalachian State? You know, one the biggest upsets in sports history?
Oh, wait..it was on the Big Ten network....

Is WISE 33 having analog issues? Seriously, their analog signal has been awful at my home in eastern whitley county for at least 2-3 months. Their digital still looks great though, with a signal stregth of 90+. Quality has not changed in other stations, except 33. *This is only an analog 33 problem for me.

Mine looks great tonight. And I'm the guy with the indoor antenna on the east side of Huntington with the antenna set so I can get 15, 21 and 33. In other words, not in my optimum 33 spot.
Anyway, what I am finding with this el cheapo set up is that some electrical items cause me problems. Today it was a bathroom fan thats probably ran all summer with no problems and I turned it off and a weeks worth of lock on and break up problems went away. I already know the microwave causes problems as does the laptop pc in the bedroom. Of course, the el cheapo antenna plugs in and maybe others have boosters or whatever that plug in as part of their system.
Maybe everybody already knows about this potential problem with digital reception, but, just in case.

I know others have the same problem with 33 digital. It is especially apparent from the end of the commercial break to the stadium shot. It's very blurry then it slowly focuses...but retains pixelation (especially at the bottom score bar)

What boggles my mind is when the Colts/Saints game was nearly unwatchable due to problems with break up, yet the Giants/Cowboys was flawless.

What are you talking about? I watched the Colts in HD on my TV and had ZERO issues... So obviously, it wasn't a problem with NBC33.
Does anyone here have experience with the new DirecTV HD DVR (HR20)? Specifically, how does it handle OTA reception? The current offering (HDTivo, HR10-200) has pretty crappy ATSC tuners... very sensitive compared to the tuner in my TV. Just wondering if they've improved that feature. Any other thoughts on how it compares to the HR10 would be appreciated as well.

neindianairish 09-11-07, 11:53 AM I watched that Colts game without a problem in HD. 51 in. Sony.

I have the HR20. The only thing I can compare it to is the DishNetwork VIP211 I used to have, and I believe the HR20 is just a little better. I will probably know more once the leaves fall off of the trees. My antenna points to South Bend and I have a lot of trees very near the antenna, but even with that, I get pretty good reception if the weather is nice and it's not too windy. I just had it installed last spring, so I haven't seen it without the tree problem yet. Can't compare to HR10, but try dbstalk.com, you may find some info there.
Thanks mxd. I got a couple other questions for the FiOS TV converts here.... I was talking to a verizon guy yesterday about their TV offerings, specifically HD, and he said that they are fully upgradeable and will add HD channels as they become available. I'd kind of like to have something a little more concrete than a sales guy telling me they'll be adding more HD content (another sales guy told me they'd have NFL Sunday Ticket within a year, maybe two of launch and it's common knowledge that DirecTV has an exclusive contract through 2010). Anyway, has there been any indication directly from Verizon to it's existing customers about what channels are coming in the near future?
Also, I got pricing from him but forgot to ask if there was an upfront cost for the HD DVR. I suspect no, but just want to make sure.
HDEye... You should've then asked why they don't have the BTN in HD yet. Oh wait, they don't have it in SD either!
By the way, no upfront cost for the HD DVR. Just do the math over 5 years and compare to others that might have an upfront cost. ;)
Yeah, I mentioned BTN to them and they tried to dance around it. For me, content is king and sports content is especially the king. I'll probably just end up sticking with DirecTV for that reason alone... I'm missing my Sunday Ticket this year! Cancelled it because I couldn't justify $330 when I'm still paying for my summer vacation. But, I might have to re-up when it goes half price in October.... I just need to get DirecTV to give me the new receiver for free. (With Dish and Verizon giving out free DVRs, I think I have a chance of convincing DirecTV to match.)
HDEye, I've been with D* for about 13-14 years. I did have FiOS TV installed but that lasted about 6 weeks and I already dropped it. I just received the slimline dish today and will probably do a self-install over the weekend. Once I get the HR20 DVR, I'll let you know about the OTA signal. I also use the LST-4200A tuner which is arguably the best OTA tuner so I'll have something good to compare it to.

TKO,
Just out of curiosity, when using the 4200a and watching 15.1, do you hear any audio clicks or pops? I had this tuner a year or so ago and ended up selling it because of this (and the fact that I had other tuners that worked just as well for me). At one point, I was troubleshooting it with people that worked at WANE and they said they had that unit in house and it had the same problems there was well.
It does pop but not as much as it used to. I actually use my D* receiver for OTA and don't use the 4200a very much.

Just interested in hearing why you dropped it. I ask only because the arrival of FiOS TV has been heralded as "the second coming", but then that's mostly coming from Comcast subs.
From what I've been able to glean from various message boards, it sounds like the tuners in the HR20 are about as crappy as the ones in the HR10. At least the one that's made by PACE (the -700 model). I haven't seen anything definitive on the RCA model (-100 model). But it also sounded like people were having luck using a signal amplifier whereas with the HR10 a signal amplifier easily overloads the tuners (or so I've heard is the explanation).
I'm definitely interested in hearing your thoughts on the HR20, but by the time you get it, I may have already taken the plunge. What's the wait time on the HR20? And what did it end up costing you if you don't mind me asking?
<ramble>
I always thought the first company that gets fiber to my house wins my business. I've had FiOS internet service from the beginning and would not drop it for anything. It's rock solid. When I had the tv service installed I went month-to-month because I wanted to compare the service to D*. I did have a long list of items I was going to post here but decided not to. Here's a few items... The SD picture quality is definitely better than D*. For HD the picture quality for me was a wash even with high motion sports. I have an HD78DC3 (720p) projector going to a 96" screen so I'm not projecting 1080p where I might see a difference. I am passing the signal through a VP30 scaler which helps me out, especially with SD material. The hardware is really what turned me away. The DVR is not ready for prime time. It's very buggy and has limited use with the 160gb drive. I set it to record a lot of the concerts on HD Net and I think I filled it the first night. With D* I can at least attach an eSata drive. I don't think Verizon will be open in this area. As to the bugs, on multiple occasions it would not allow me to change the channel to the one being recorded. If the channel was selected through the guide or entered through the remote the receiver just stayed on the current channel. If I scrolled through the channels it would skip the channel. If this is a 'feature', I don't like it. Several recorded movies had the show length set to zero so I could not reference the current time position to move around. FiOS is supposed to be the best and the guide isn't even wide screen. That is one reason I would never have Comcast. If I'm paying the monthly fee get rid of the advertising in the guide and use the full screen so I can see more program titles. D* receivers will switch between an HD and SD guide depending on the output.
As to Verizon, I agree with others and would like to see Verizon's customer service once they have 10 million subscribers. I'm also surprised they implemented their VOD service over IP. I do not use their router but have a PC act as my router. All the VOD video obviously goes through the router which gives the resourceful youth something to do on the weekends.
Verizon vs Comcast. Verizon wins hands down. Some people dislike Verizon as much as Comcast so it might be a choice of lesser of two evils. In small markets that have FiOS tv, I think Comcast might be pinched a little bit because of the lack SDV. Someone else might know the answer, but I think Comcast is maxed out in Fort Wayne. Why can't they add HD channels that are available in other Comcast markets? How about at least open up a HD channel when something is live on the NFL HD network. D* will do this so they didn't have to allocate an entire channel when they had limited bandwidth.
One nice feature of D* is how they will open up a channel to show an HD sporting event and simulcast all games from a single provider. I don't think Verizon or Comcast will ever show four Big Ten games at a time when they finally get the channel. They will most likely only show the in-market game. It would be interesting to see if Verizon shows HD baseball games through the MLB package once they have it. Comcast does not.

HDEye, you have a PM.

They are using a similar/same? Moto STB as the cable companies. It's not that good. They should have made a deal with Tivo to rent out the series 3.
Bears in HD by CBS, 15 not there yet as of 4:44 PM.
^ Working with CBS on a switching failure on our HD receiver here. Should be up in HD now.

Anyone else seeing glitches on WISE over-the-air tonight? Since 8 PM I've had three picture freezes lasting up to a minute each. I flip over to the satellite feed and it's going along with no problems. I suspect this issue has been ongoing as the last several episodes of Last Comic Standing that I have DVR'd have shown up as being 58 minutes long (rather than the full hour) and there are spots where the picture pixellates and then continues but it's obvious that something was missing (i.e. they start announcing the comedian, picture glitch, comedian is half-way through a joke).
It hasn't been a huge deal to me, but with the new TV season starting next week I will be a little more annoyed if it keeps happening a lot.
HDEye, It's happening here on the new HR20.
Which receiver are you referring to with Vonage? I had my RCA DVR40 connected to a Vonage line and it worked fine. There used to be codes to slow down the modem.
The HR10. It took quite a few tries with a number of different codes to get it to make the initialization call. Ever since it has never gotten past the "handshake" so I decided to just live with the phone home nag message.

I've noticed several picture freezes during the Patriots - Chargers game tonight. They don't appear like normal OTA signal loss. The picture just freezes for about a minute.

WISE is having problems with interference with the STL (Studio/Transmitter Link).
We are on a backup system with lower power, waiting for the replacement of the main higher power equipment.

The original main unit went down about 4 weeks ago and we installed the new equipment about a week after the original failure, then for whatever reason the new unit died and we went back on the backup. We recieved the replacement on Thursday morning of the Colts game, then that equipment died 4 days later. We have another replacement here at the station, but have not put it on the tower yet. We are waiting to see if the manufacturer can figure out what happened to the other units.
Hopefully we will know something this week and can get the new units on the tower.

ENGjas, While you're answering questions, my parents live off Butler road which basically looks up at your towers. Over the past 6-8 months their HD OTA reception has deteriorated. Do you know if the same signal strength is being deflected downward?
They're using a multi-directional outdoor antenna with an amp. I have tried every combination of antenna/amp/indoor/outdoor/yagi/receivers/rabbit ears and can't get a quality lock.
Thanks.

With being so close, you should not use any amplification. You can actually have to strong of a signal and your tuner may have trouble locking on the signal.
Being that close does make it hard to receive the stations. We have trouble here at the studio getting both signals. I have an attenuator on our antenna here to "weaken" the signal and that helps quite a bit. I believe Radio Shack has a variable attenuator, at least they used to.
Hope this helps some.
For those wanting the FIOS TV guide to be widescreen on the HD DVR, I spoke to a tech support worker and he said it may be in the October guide update.
Iowa-Wisconsin started in HD, now they've lost it.
"Loss of Input Signal" being broadcast on 15-1 at the moment. Should be NFL Today.
You live for these moments, don't ya JohnW?
I'm here early (again) trying to figure out the problem, hoping to have it fixed before the start of the Colt game.

They're coming back..
Since you guys like techie info, here she goes:
Our CBS receivers are having problems with the horizontal transponders. Both of them, where last weekend only the primary took a dive.
Thankfully, there is another feed on the horizontal bird. One caveat: this is the flex feed. So should this game turn to a blowout, we'll have to go to upconvert so you can at the very least see the game.
Since we sit on a vertical transponder all the time for normal east coast programming, we had no clue what the problem was until now. Problem is hard to troubleshoot unless CBS is live on other transponders.
We know finally what the problem is, and hope to quickly correct it so it doesn't pop up again.
Strike portions of my reply above, as the problem is deeper than metioned aboved. We are working on it, but don't have a lot of answers and won't probably for a while.
Thank goodness CBS didn't flex off the game so it was on in its entirety in HD.
Actually, I wish they never happened. I love HD. I hope they pay ya good for this weekend work. BTW-we have a picture now, but, not in HD.
I'm with you there, John. We just purchased our first HD set for my personal use a month ago and love watching HD programming versus straight analog. My heart sunk a little bit when I saw the loss of input signal pop up.
I'll assure you we are actively investigating what happened and hope to have answers soon. Hope to do a little troubleshooting this weekend as our first game will not be available in HD. That should give us a few hours to see what is going on.
Rickmid 09-24-07, 04:46 PM Did Comcast change thier cable feed? I was able to use my built-in TV Guide thru my Pioneer Plasma TV until last week. Now the Guide says it has no information..... The Pioneer says its set-up to work.
Any Clue?
Hello all:
We think we have zoned in on the problem we had with no signal this past weekend. With any sort of luck (and we are do a break around here) we'll hope to get the permanent fix in place quickly. We do have a work around in place (with no way to test it yet). Hopefully, this will solve the problem.

goldrich 09-27-07, 05:42 PM Is there a public location, like in Glenbrook Mall, where you can see a live, working demo of FiOS? Thanks in advance for any related info.

Wow, this week flew by quickly.
So you all know, for our doubleheader tomorrow: the lead game is NOT scheduled to be in HD (Balitmore/Cleveland.)
The Colts/Broncos game is scheduled to be up in HD.
We do have a work around in place to prevent the "loss of input signal" you guys may have noticed the last few weeks from happening during the Colt game.
We've spent the vast majority of the week chasing the problem and as I posted earlier, are close to finally whipping it. We'd have it by now if Galaxy 25 had more stuff in the clear each week!
Enjoy the games this weekend.

Steve - The place to go would be Verizon's main customer location on Coldwater Rd just south of Coliseum. I think they have an lcd setup there. I can check for sure and let you know.
The NFL Today in HD from the get-go at 12 noon EDT. OK!
Colts not in HD at start.
Is it just me, or has the 300 "grain crush" been applied to "Chuck" ?
WTH? Just saw a commercial for ABC Saturday Night Football with regional coverage of Purdue/Ohio State or UCLA/Notre Dame. Up until now, I just assumed we'd be seeing the Purdue game but seeing Notre Dame on the other half of that ticket made me concerned. I'd be nervous if ND were actually good this year, but with two 5-0 Big 10 teams going at it, one being a home state team that would easily trump an 0-5 going to slaughter at a 4-1..... You would think.
TitanTV, TVGuide, and the DirecTV channel listings all show Fort Wayne getting the stupid Notre Dame game. Are you $%#ing kidding me????

The Purdue game will be seen on ABC 21 and the Notre Dame game will be on 33-2, Abc requires us to air the Purdue game on 21. Normally they will not let you have both games, but due to both being in state teams, thay have allowed us to carry the Notre Dame game on a subby.
I did write to 21 last night and then saw the announcement on their website today about Notre Dame being carried on 33-2. So if 21 is required by ABC to show the Purdue game, why do all all channel listings show ND/UCLA? Maybe just to give a bunch of people heartburn? LOL

What is 33-2 on Fios? I know ND sucks this year, but I couldn't call myself a loyal fan if I bailed on them when the going was tough.

magic507 10-04-07, 07:43 AM Any word on when and if any new HD channels will be coming to the Fort Wayne area.... I noticed Direct TV is supposed to be adding a bunch now (in October) and Comcast in Chicago now offers TBS HD
I was installed middle of July and after the initial nirvana, here's an update:
1. The DVR needs some work - I never used Comcast's DVR or Tivo but I had a ReplayTV for many years that worked great I miss it. The FIOS DVR doesn't seem to understand record only first run; it seems to miss recordings periodically; and I just started noticing that if I do a manual record, it seems to somehow grab the entire program from the start (nice feature if indeed true). I'll give it a few more months but this may be the first option that bites the dust for me.
2. The Channel Guide is flashy but quite slow in operation.
3. Over the past few weeks, I've noticed a lot of "channel not available" for HD. I suspect this is due to problems with local feeds.
4. Need more HD content and the quality when the signal is present still seems quite good. Having Fox HD would be better than GREAT and after watching baseball playoffs on WTBS, we need that too. Essentially, I wish Verizon would check future NCAA, NFL, MLB, etc. TV contracts and if some odd network happened to get the rights, please add that HD channel.
5. Billing - I'm not sure I've gotten a correct bill yet. As I recall the "package" was $105 for internet (5mbps), phone (unlimited long distance) and TV (one set top box included). I have the 15mbps internet which should be $5 more, 3 extra set top boxes for another $15, DVR for $13, and HBO for $16. A few friends have been complaining too. But, I keep calling each month and so far their customer service has been good. I have also noticed on some other forums that FIOS packages for other cities have started out as low as $75/mo - hmmmm.
Even given the above problems, I'm still happy I switched - at least I think so.
Is it just me or does the Colts game sound like mono in a padded room?
+ sporadic clicks
Agree. Having to watch the Colts on WFFT stinks.
I think we should start a petition to send to Fox corporate. Fort Wayne is a top 100 city (~84th) with respect to population and it would seem like we deserve a lot better than what WFFT and their parent company are providing.
Here's a list of other stations owned by Nexstar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexstar_Broadcasting_Group). When I get a chance I'll see if I can find which ones below our size receive HD broadcasts.
martian21 10-07-07, 10:12 PM First post here, been following this thread for close to a year now.
I've seen several others in this thread have been having issues with WISE-HD and to a lesser degree with WANE-HD. I've been having problems with WISE-HD for a couple months now. Just tonight during the Green Bay - Chicago game had the signal just drop for ~1 minute a couple different times. I saw the previous posts from ENGjas about their antennae issues. Is this still ongoing? WANE-HD has been pretty solid for me lately, I really can't complain. ABC-HD has had no issues.
As for WFFT...I can see the tower from my house. I can get their digital signal with a Silver Sensor pointed directly at the tower at about 65% signal level. However the silver sensor is so directional and I'm so close to the towers that I can't get all local stations reliably without having move the Silver Sensor around (not good with a DVR). I recently switched to a less directional "bow tie" antennae and now I don't have to hand tune every station but I can no longer get WFFT (oh darn...)
Oh, one last question. Does anyone else get a thin yellow line down the left side on 33.1? I added a 1% horizontal overscan and got rid of it but just wondered if anyone else saw it.
Martian21
neindianairish 10-08-07, 08:29 AM Was doing a singnal scan this weekend on both TV's and they both locked on to a "31-20"... No programming, but coming in near 90% between Columbia City and Huntington. What is this? Also, I'm about ready to shake someone from 55. Seriously, how far away are they? I hate turning my h20 aside so I can watch a "crappy" analog signal of the Colts game. Geez- get it together.
cameraready 10-08-07, 10:11 AM We should just start a new thread for WFFT complaints since this thread is "Fort Wayne, IN - HDTV" and WFFT doesn't even come close to being HD. ;)

It is ridiculous isn't it? I imagine there are quite a few ticked off people. I wonder if they will have something in place by the Superbowl.
Well, I found this list (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=422073) from this very same wonderful forum of stations broadcasting in HD with or without DD5.1 - like I'd live without 5.1 for a signal from WFFT!
I checked a few stations below Fort Wayne from Nexstar's list of stations and they appear to be on the AVS forum list. I'll try to check some more later.
I think that list is out of date. From what I read, Abiline's Nexstar stations (CBS and NBC) are now broadcasting in HD, with CBS coming online just in time for the Super Bowl last year. I did some checking in the threads here at AVS and from what I can tell it looks like Peoria, Rockford, Abilene, and Monroe have HD from Nexstar. Also, everyone above us on the DMA list has been converted with the exception their NBC affiliate in the Washington DC market. However, there are two other NBC affiliates broadcasting in HD in that area, so there is little incentive for them to dump their money there. I can only hope that this means we'll be upgraded very soon. But I'll believe it when I see it.
KennyB123 10-08-07, 07:44 PM Umm... I haven't been able to pickup 15-1 and 15-2 Wane digital channels since yesterday. Am I the only one? I can get the analog station.
No problems with 15-1 or 15-2 here.
Oh, one last question. Does anyone else get a thin yellow line down the left side on 33.1? I added a 1% horizontal overscan and got rid of it but just wondered if anyone else saw it.

Yes I see that also. It must be coming from the NBC network feed and not the local affiliate. I have my antenna pointed toward South Bend (so I can get Fox in HD) and the NBC station from South Bend has the same line.
KennyB123 10-09-07, 10:11 PM No problems with 15-1 or 15-2 here.
Thanks... had to tinker with the antenna. Makes no sense, but took me 30 minutes to get it. Neither 21.1 or 33.1 were so sensitive.

Direct TV has added some of their new HD channels. Every week for the past 3 weeks, they have added 3 or more channels. if you check their site you can see what has already been added and what is coming. i currently get 28 HD channels not including movie channels or locals.
martian21 10-10-07, 01:44 PM Next to Fox (for obvious reasons) WANE is always the most difficult for me to tune.
My Monday night project involved combining two $3.99 Radio Shack "Bow Tie" UHF antennas, a balum and a tin foil reflector to create a "Frankenstein" DB2. The project was so successful that I had to remove the 10dB preamp I was using to drive the ~100 ft of coax between the antenna and the tuner because my signal at the tuner was so high it was clipping. I'm now getting 100% signal level on WISE, WPTA, and WFWA. I'm getting mid 90's on WANE and the real shocker is that I'm getting above 70% signal from WFFT. It's actually good enough to be watchable, not that there is any reason to watch there digital signal over the analog.
I think I can finally say with confidence that any reception problems I now have aren't coming from my end.
Martian21

gocubs2231 10-11-07, 07:08 AM Just looking at the IU basketball schedule and noticed probably 50% of the games are on the BTN. Does this mean we won't get any of these games on a local channel this year? If so, what a great opportunity for Verizon to gain even more momentum than getting the BTN on their channel lineup since Comcast is refusing.

Alan,
In the Rockford market (I'm 35 miles away and can get all their DTV's easily), our FOX affiliate, owned by Nexstar, has been in HD for well over a year, and has been at 900 kw for several months (they had originally planned to go 1 million, but a sidemount antenna cuts down their signal a tad, so they had to re-apply to get 900 kw. No matter...it's a blowtorch. People are getting it in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with the antenna pointed at Chicago!
I've been trying to figure out why they upgraded us (a smaller market than yours, obviously) before you guys. Nevertheless, in wrestling terminology, FOX is delivering a figure-four leglock to all FOX affiliates not in HD, with one exception: a station in western Wisconsin, with small revenue due to the very small market. They are at low power and in SD just like WFFT, and plan to go to HD in 2009. It's the one station the FCC really has sympathy for, and I'd agree. The station said it would go bankrupt if it went full power, or get HD equipment. Full power will come in 2009, as well as HD, I'm guessing, for them.
But for everyone else, HD or else. They are breathing down WFFT's neck.
I know they've aid they'll be in HD for the Super Bowl, and I believe them. If not, they'll catch a lot of crud from FOX. Be advised, newer members, that doesn't mean full power...and 970 watts at 200' up doesn't go far at all. You're still at least a year away from full power. A review for the newer members here:

gocubs2231 10-12-07, 06:54 AM So all this bantering in the media about having all these 'BIG' football games goes out the window during basketball season. I know LOTS of unhappy people if they can't watch their Hoosiers/Boilermakers on TV. These guys better get their act together. BTN probably knows this and they are laughing at Comcast right now.

Hire:
1. Police to route traffic
2. Ticket agent ($20 adult, $12 seniors, $8 10 years and under)
3. Beer vendor
Milk their low power status for all its worth and retire early!
(The preceding is just a joke. But, in all seriousness, WFFT corporate headquarters has no plans to upgrade FOX's power until late next year at the earliest.)
KennyB123 10-12-07, 11:24 AM If the Colts make it to the Super Bowl, I won't give a crap about Fox being in HD! I have two guaranteed tickets to the game in Glendale, Arizona. But, ONLY if the Colts go.
November 4th is a big game! Getting home field for the playoffs is HUGE!
topdogg069 10-12-07, 01:30 PM i can't wait for the IU games to be on the big ten network. that way i can watch them in HD instead of crappy SD.
KennyB123 10-13-07, 04:42 PM That's fine, Toppdogg... but there aren't too many D* subscribers here... most of us really need FIOS to pick up BTN.

Really? Argh! I'm a bit jealous of you dish owners then.
Once Fios gets BTN, they should be unstoppable in Fort Wayne...think of all the Comcast Indiana / Purdue basketball fans.
I can't imagine a holdout by Verizon and Comcast into the basketball season. It would be a deep self-inflicted wound. I could only see Comcast doing it... because they don't cater to the subscribers at all.

I have to agree...I think it would be a HUGE move for Verizon to get it first. Maybe they would even assume the cost and not pass it on to us because of the influx of new subscribers!!! :D OR...maybe IU can use the money they just received back from Sampson and help us get all those IU games.
pizzaman260 10-15-07, 12:11 AM When I watch WPTA in HD, my plasma will perform a loud digital hiss  , shut off, and "reboot" itself when they switch from network shows to local commercials or promo spots. Welcome to the forum,
hmmm I haven't experienced anything like that but there are others on this forum who have way more experience than I do!
Have you tried doing a search for your particular TV in the other forums in case it is something specific with your model?

topdogg069 10-15-07, 06:56 PM yeah i'll believe WFFT will be in HD the day I see it on my TV. which i still believe will never happen.

Fox Business HD
HGTV HD
Speed Channel HD
Fuel HD
Cartoon Network HD
FX HD
and a few RSN's

From what I hear, it'll be 5,000 watts to start, and then up to the million sometime in the summer.

Unless an act of God or something catastrophic happens, I'd say there's better than an "iffy" chance. But I'm nowhere near a betting person so I won't even give odds.
Please understand that the "vagueness" is just a cover thy posterior type of statement. If it comes out that WFFT will be in HD on such and such date, and WFFT isn't, then some will grill them even more.

I don't know for sure for your situation. That's not my area of expertise. I do know that the signal will be coming from the tower at 670 feet off the ground, and not the 200 ft that the current digital signal is coming from.:)
NoToLowPower 10-16-07, 10:54 AM So definitely maybe? :D I didn't think about the height, that makes all the difference.
As long as we're all crossing our fingers, let's cross our fingers that they get it going early enough to give us the BCS games in HD.

You would think WFFT would listen, yeh right. Anyways, WFFT is nothing compared to FOX 28-1 out of South Bend. Even if WFFT did go full power today I would never watch them because 28 is hands down alot better.

satellitesteve 10-17-07, 09:53 PM Was wondering if someone here can advise. We run a 70 foot tower here in Huntington with the best antenna and pre-amp that we could buy. All of the Fort Wayne digital's come in great 99.9 percent of the time (no 55.1) but the 33-1. 33-2. and the 33-3 channels. Several times a day those channels just breakup, totally go away, and then come back after a few seconds. We have talked to many other people around this area and they are having the same problems so we know that it is not just us. Can anyone advise as to there problems? As that we only see it on the three 33 channels is it a frequency problem, or is it that 33 has transmitter issues?
Thanks, Steve
I know 33 was having transmitter issues a month ago or so, it doesn't seem as if it's been fixed yet. I'm seeing the same problems as you (I'm just 4 miles from the tower) and have been seeing it since early September, if not earlier. There was some discussion on it in this forum at the time. Maybe ENGjas has an update?
satellitesteve 10-17-07, 10:32 PM Thanks for the reply. We are also seeing that the old analog 33 seems to be at only 3/4 power most of the time?

WISE's issues were supposed to be fixed back mid summer after some lines were changed out at the antenna. Since then the signal has gone down hill quite a bit.
There is a tower crew scheduled to be here the week of the 29th to figure out what has gone wrong at the antenna. During this time WISE will again be on a temporary side mount antenna at about 600 feet and at 80% power until the problem is repaired.

Ditto. Maybe we all need to start calling Verizon to ask where all their HD channels are. You'd think with all that bandwidth, they would be able to add all the available HD channels AND have HD programming available via On Demand.
Before I call DirecTV, Is anyone able to get Speedvision HD?
I am getting all the other HD's but no Speedvision. I am just getting the "no satellite signal message".

diehard_1955 10-25-07, 04:08 PM All,
I know this is off topic, but I figured it would be a great place to ask since everyone here has a HDTV.
I have an older Pioneer Elite Pro 510 HDTV and it is getting darker. I have been reading and what I have found is it probably needs cleaning (which I can do myself). I also have read that there are calibrators out there that will come to your home and calibrate the TV back to even better than brand new condition. This Pioneer is one of the best and I want to see the great HD that I had when I bought it in 2001.
My question is, has anyone used these calibrators? Or what other alternative is out there to calibrate a HDTV up to the best of it's settings?
thanks,

I have a potentially stupid question.
My friend got FIOS tv about a month ago. I noticed his guide looks sharper than mine. The type is crisper and has nice drop shadows, and the fullscreen guide has transparency on the guide rows (you can see the tv content is in the background).
Is this a newer box? Newer firmware?

You can set the full screen guide to tranparent thru the settings feature on your remote. The sharpness may just be increasing your tv settings, I had to tweek mine a bit with Fios.

I ended up tuning Heroes off about 40 minutes into it because it became unwatchable. I really hope 33 gets their HD signal sorted out soon. I'm about to stop watching the station all together and just resort to "other" methods of watching NBC content. Guess I finish watching Heroes tomorrow night. Oh, and please don't suggest I watch it in analog...I've seen the goodness that is HD and I'm never going back!

I'm not home to check, so is it really just the old Supercell radar with new maps from the VIPIR system plastered on it? (On the news, the real VIPIR radar is either on a loop or they show a map of Indiana with (I think) three different sweeps going round.)

Thought it was just me, but Discovery HD Theater has it's own programming and now theres a Discovery HD...Planet Earth on tonight too.:D
Channel 846 (Discovery Channel HD) mirrors channel 100. I noticed if it is not in your guide unplug your box and plug it back in.
Interestingly, Discovery HD doesn't stretch its non-HD commercials...it zooms in. There is also a lot of pixelation on some shows.
Oh well, we get Dirty Jobs, Survivorman, and Mythbusters in HD :)
zephxiii 11-11-07, 07:04 PM Google just found me this thread :)
Whats the deal with FOX and HDTV? I noticed they are broadcasting digital, but none of the NFL games are in HD, wtf, its almost 2008!
Were the issues that NBC was having with their transmitter the cause of the "hiccups" where it seemed like the transmission would stop for several seconds then continue? Did anyone else experience this a few weeks back?
Whats up with comcast, we havn't had cable plugged into the TV for a while due to the missing HD channels. They were available for a while, then one weekend they weren't there anymore (month or two back). Someone in another forum said they did a rescan and found them again, I tried that (month or a few back) as well and found a couple but the signal was real weak for some reason, we only have the super cheap package.
I ended up calling comcast about it which turned out to be a complete waste of time as the rep was a complete moron and failed to understand that my TV has a QAM tuner and i was getting all the local broadcast HD channels until something happened resulting in me not getting them anymore and insisted that it was impossible for me to get them with out a subscribing to digital service....lol.
anyways, just wondering.
WFFT is in the process of upgrading, completion of low power broadcasting is targeted for the Super Bowl. Full power is targeted for next summer.
Yes, those drop-outs were a result of WISE transmitter problems.
Don't know about the Comcast deal since I have DirecTV.
On another note, has anybody suddenly experienced issues with WPTA? Friday night it was very bad (stuttering/pixelation) and last night it was better but not cured. This one was pegged at 100 on my HR20 signal meter in the past. When I checked last night it was bouncing between 90 and 95 with an occasional loss of signal.

I can answer this...
Comcast encrypted the HD's so you have to have a box to get them. TV tuner or not, you have to have a box. You can still get the locals though without the box.

Sorry to disappoint you, but that is the current version of the IMG that we have. This announcement deals with other parts of the country that have had the TV services longer and still had the original 1.0 IMG. We're stuck with the crap 2.0 for now.
martian21 11-12-07, 10:43 PM Yes, the transmitters were turned off to complete repairs at the antenna. Both signal levels now should be much better than they have been for quite a while.
Unfortunately I'm not really seeing much improvement. Both episodes of Frasier on 33.2 were borderline unwatchable. Heroes on 33.1 was watchable but just barely. No full signal drops tonight but still had frequent blocking and glitching. A couple 1-2 seconds skips as well.
I really had my hopes up this time. :(
Are others still having problems with 33's signal? I get everything else in town rock solid, even 55.

The Colts game came was fairly close to perfect, a big improvement compared to other Sunday nights games in the past. What tuner are you using?
I had no issues during the Colts game Sunday night, but a couple of spots were touch and go during Heroes last night. Luckily not bad enough to cause me to miss anything significant. On the bright side, my glitch with WPTA this past weekend seems to have cleared up. I watched Samantha Who? with no issues whatsoever.
martian21 11-13-07, 06:38 PM I'm using an HDHomerun (http://www.silicondust.com/). It's been flawless on everything but WISE.
I didn't get to watch the Colts game so can't comment on that. Heroes was much improved Last night however Frasier on the 33.2 subchannel was still un-watchable.
Have you tried viewing 33.2 at all?

Can you get HD locals from fios without a box?

I am not sure..

Unless something has changed recently, you can pick up the local HDs on FIOS w/out a box. (I was able to do that in August when I had mine installed, but I haven't tried it since then.)
Am I seeing breakups on 33 again? Can we all chip in and buy some parts that will last more than a week?
magic507 11-15-07, 09:58 AM It seems that NBC HD has been having breakups and sound drop issues for months now.... wtf is going on..... I recorded Life last night and when I went to watch it today, there was minor break ups for the first 15 minutes and the rest of the show had no sound..... I have comcast btw and am using their box not pulling it in via antenna...

It is possible that Comcast gets the feed via antenna and pumps it onto the lineup from there. I will check on that though.

Thanks for the info
billsoftball 11-16-07, 01:33 PM This is the case. Comcast gets the HD feed via antenna and sends it out from there.

Verizon gets their feeds through fiber optics direct from the local stations.
Score another one for FIOS.

You may want to check on that...
I don't know if this would be of any help to 33 regarding their problems or if its just a symptom that is happening because of the real problem. Anyway, as I said earlier on my Dish network 222 receiver there had been trouble with guide data for 33-3 for quite a while. When they got 33 digital "fixed" here a while back I had perfect guide data. Now that its misbehaving again-no breakups on Today this morning, just a terrible HD picture-the 33-3 guide data is once again whacko. Even forcing a guide update doesn't bring in anything for 33-3. I'll send this info to ENGjas as well.

That information was told to me by a Verizon employee - someone who kept me up to date while FIOS TV was being set up in Fort Wayne.
It could be wrong though. What information do you have stating otherwise, billsoftball?

According to ENGjas, no connection and they HAVE NOT completed all their work yet. I like these guys, but, as I've said before, this signal will get much more and better attention when its their ONLY signal.
