Rear - Polk Audio RC 55i
The Snell Type C speakers are not the original design. After destroying 5 tweeters and having them replaced by Snell, Snell said they could no longer send replacements. I worked out a deal to send the speakers back and have the Type C II tweeters added and have a new crossover built. These have been working fine ever since. The woofers finally gave out a few years ago, and Snell reconed one woofer and replaced the other woofer. Cabinets and grill cloth are showing some wear, but they still sound great. Must be 18 years old by now.

No, this is what happens when one's spouse starts taking an interest in your HT. She saw the VTF-3R and liked the way it looked and it's functionality as a table. Hard to say no, as I had picked out everything else, and she didn't object (too much:) ) when I heard and liked the 'mezzos 6 months after I bought the Polks.
Having said that, not sure I'm giving up anything with the VTF-3R vs. the 'mezzo 1.2. The Hsu is a dynamic, deep and room shaking sub...
Regards,
John

Hawkson, I've read every post, and looked up many of the speakers on the Net.:D
I read through all these post's and doesn't seem to be many Paradigm fans here. it would seem less than 5% own paradigm on this board and the sub of choice here is HSU.
it's funny how different forums have different tastes bunched together. is there a reason Paradigm is such a low choice on this board ?

HSU is one of the forum sponsor's, so perhaps this is why it is so popular here. I do, however, see SVS more of the king in the forum. M&K would slide into third in AVSF popularity.
I don't know why Paradigm is not mentioned a lot here. It is mentioned, but not as much as others. They make a good speaker.

I don't know why Paradigm is not mentioned a lot here. It is mentioned, but not as much as others. They make a good speaker. Product popularity is a direct result of advertising and name recognition. This could point to Paradigm's problem. Maybe the majority of AVS members here don't subcribe to mags like Sound&Vision where Paradigm does advertise much more than HSU. Just a thought,,, Regards, Robin

Hawkson 01-03-04, 02:44 AM that is a good point
by mentioning the same 5 brands over and over, more people buy those brands, and then those people mention the same brands over and over. is AVS a good source for finding the best speakers? i think so. but then again i could be wrong. if all that is recommend on these boards is the same, who knows if different is better?
IMO i think avs has found (and recommends the best companies) based on my own research. before i found AVS i researched all the proffesional reviews and found basiclaly the same companies recommended. on top of that i have read many posts of more expierenced testers who have gone out and purchased all kinds of speakers for personal use, and have reported back the same findings-speaker brand 'x' performed the best...
in case you were wondering, my definition ofspeaker brand X is axiom, ascend, rocket, paradigm, klipsch, and magnepans.
also, (somewhat related)-the online speaker companies have been debated to death, and no new information or revelations comes out of those discussions. but, the consumer who inquires about local brands because they dont want to order online generates the most interesting, and different discussions as to what the best speaker is.
Jondalar 01-03-04, 10:35 AM I have the Paradigm Servo-sub 15 incher. I use it with all Von Schweikert speakers and am very satisfied with it.
My HT setup is almost all Klipsch. Forte's up front with an Academy center. Surrounds are RS-3IIs. Happy happy! Joy joy!
Rear is a single Quintet right now which given the amount of material sent back there isn't a bad interim solution, but the rear will need an amp (probably put a monobloc on the center and move the existing channel to the back). Not sure what will replace the Quintets yet.
Edit2 (removed): Main sub is a 15" DBX passive swallowing 280w and asking for more. Auxiliary sub is a Yamaha SW-90. Coupled with the Forte's which are only 3db down at 32Hz, the battery is okay. But this is also an area for eventual improvement.
Edit: You wanted electronics too... Outlaw 950 pushing Hafler XL-280s (2x140) and a Fosgate Audionics 4100 (4x100).
Edit2: One of the Hafler 280s died, leaving the 15" sub without an amp. Outlaw LFM-1 replaces it and the Yamaha.
Elsewhere in the house, in the library/wife office some old AR bookshelves that still sound pretty good. In my office Energy bookshelves that I really like. Polk Audio wall-mounts with a Jamo sub in the gym. Various multi-media, including a Klipsch GMX A-2.1 (sats remind me of a Madonna bra but sound damn good anyway). KLH outdoor set under the balcony.

Rob_Hutchinson 01-13-04, 09:16 PM Certainly seems like the usual suspects here for the most part:
Ascend, Axiom, B&W, Def. Tech, Energy, Klipsch, Magnepan, M&K, Monitor, NHT, Onix Rockets/ELT, Paradigm, Polk with a few Mirage OMNI and KEF thrown in for good measure.
SVS and HSU clearly dominate the subs.
But I'm a little surprised that I didn't see more Dynaudio, Jamo, Martin Logan (especially), Phase Tech, PSB and Totem setups.
The few Vandersteen, Viena, Wilson and Wharfedale (funny how they're all at the end of the alphabet, isn't it? ) setups are clearly a bit more scratch than the majority can afford to plunk down on speakers, but I'm sure we'd all love to be able to do so :D

Spoonfed 01-13-04, 09:30 PM If money wasn't a problem, well i guess one would just go STUPID :)
I think should be more based on, if one had the oportunity to UPGRADE components within a REASONABLE budget what would one choose.
I don't want to Upgrade my Quads (very pleased with them)
I'd replace the rear Whardale with Quad 11L's, and maybe add another Quad centre for a rear 6th channel.
(but this would only occur after:
upgrade my reciever to one with decent preouts (a pre-processor is pertty expensive option) and then get Australian made Electra mulitchannel dedicaded amp.)
I'd also get a parametric EQ (which i will be eventually anyway) for the HSU to get rid of the bad 40hz hump in my roomj.
But now im just getting off topic, sooo zzzzzzzzzzip :)hehe

Loved the sub. When I bought it, it was the sub that kept on giving. Don't know how it would compare to the newer Velodynes or SVS as I've never demo'd them.

I'll definetely upgrade the mains when I move out of my NYC studio apt.

Who built your center? Which mid horn is that? Does the shape of the horn color the sound any differently than the horns in the mains?
The reason I ask is that I'm in a very similar situation. My mains are very similar to the Klipschorn and use the same drivers. I'm currently using the Klipsch center, but I think a larger center would sound better next to the larger mains. I also want a vertical speaker to prevent lobing. Do you mind me asking the budget for the center speaker?
Thanks!
Man this thread is long, and boring. Too little new happening here.

I built the center myself. the cabinet is 42"w x 13,5"h x 15"d. Cabinet is made out of 3/4" marine grade oak plywood with complete internal bracing and wired with 12 gauge monster cable. I am using 2-Klipsch KV1089 10" woofers out of a Klipsch RF7, T35 horn tweeter(aka Klipsch K77), and a Klipsch K52 midrange horn with the 90°x60° Tractrix® Horn out of a Klipsch KLF30. Crossover is a 3-way, 2nd order (12dB) crossover with a 3 octave spread between crossover points. I used Metallized polypropylene capacitors in critical midrange and tweeter signal paths. 18 gauge inductors are used to keep DC resistance to a minimum. crossover points are 700/5600. There are 2- 4" flared ports in the rear of the cabinet
The only part I did not due myself was the front motorboard. I had a cabinet shop do the special rabbiting bscause of the shape of the woofer flange. I wanted to make sure everything was completely flush.
The trick is to make sure that the internal cabinet is braced very good, which I have done. I added 2 smaller horizontal braces. Once I install the acoustic foam to the inside this should do it. I would have prefered to use solid oak but the cost is so high and very hard to find in anything over 12"wide. I am not a big fan of MDF. It is discusting to work with and makes a mess. Yes it is pretty dead cabinet
This center sounds excellent. Measurments are 38hz to 17.5Khz 100db 1 watt input.
The off axis sound is exceptional!

Bulldogger 02-03-04, 07:53 PM Actully Schwa03, I think at the price point you have a pretty nice sounding speaker set-up. The Boston speakers are very musical and clean sounding and your sub has been well reviewed. I'd say you've made some great choices. Your system is more representive of what I'd recommend to my friends. Not everyone's an addict that's going to spend enough money to buy a nice car on speakers.

Maximus330I 02-18-04, 10:41 PM David,
I just purchased 4-N805's with the htm-2 center. I've been thinking about getting the asw-800 sub. How do you like it? Do you feel its worth the expense? Thanks.
David_C_M 02-18-04, 11:57 PM Maximus
The ASW-800 is my most recent addition to my system. I have only had it for about a month. I think buying the sub was worth it. I was very surprised on how well it integrated musically with the mains. It took a little tweaking for getting the proper balance and maybe a little break in time for the cone loosen up. But WOW!
I am not sure how well it would work with the 802's and the 800's thats why they made the 850.
But it works fine with the 803's and 805's as mains because I tried them both.
In fact, if I do a music system I will probably get at set of Sig 805's and another 800 sub.
I think the new sub series is a huge improvement over the old ASW-4000. The old 4000 kicked butt for movies but wasn't that great for music. The new one is very smooth and fast.
The only other sub I would have liked to try is a REL Stadium III.
It comes down to how much you want to spend. I am a B&W nut so too me it was worth it.

TurboDiesel 02-20-04, 11:56 AM I just own a pair of Klipsch Synergy SF-3s as of right now. I was trying to decide between the Athena Audition AS-F2 and them becuase of the positive reveiws that Athena gets, but I decided to go with the Klipsch completely at random.
I am happy with their sound even from my older, low quality, 2ch Kenwood receiver (104AR).

Jim85IROC 03-10-04, 04:57 PM I have a pair of Boston Acoustics T830s. I've also got some cheap crap center channel and a pair of even cheaper sony surrounds. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find anything to match the bostons.
Soon I'll be building myself a new set of speakers. I'm not sure what drivers I'm going to use yet, but I'm leaning toward Usher towers, but then I run into the same issue with no matching center & surrounds. For now I may choose less expensive stuff so that I can build 5 instead of two.
I really do like my Bostons though. They may not be a "high end" speaker, but I bought them dirt cheap in college and their sound is very smooth, and very pleasant. They image well, and the sealed enclosures provide smooth bass, although they don't extend very far below 50hz.
I certainly haven't heard anything from Boston since that compares.

I am a Gonstead Chiropractor now. I was a radar tech in the Navy. The radar will heat donuts very quickly-I've tried it! Then I was a bench tech for audio/tv equipment. I have been factory trained by Bose, JVC, Sony, RCA, etc.
Actually, I did this in the early 70's. I worked on Gas TV's-that's how old I am!!
I have owned many systems. I just sold a set of Klipsch RF-35's. They were great for HT, but weren't to my liking for Music.
Have owned Studio series Paradigm's (My son-in-law has them now).
I am selling my present speakers and am reading this forum for my next purchase.

Hi,
Please help. I have bought the Athena AS-F2 and their AS-R1 Bipole surrounds for my 25ft x 25ft basement. I currently have a kenwood vr6050 receiver but do not think It does the speakers justice also when I turn the sytem on I hear a hissing noise from the speaker is that normal.
Should I upgrade the reciever would it help if yes to what which of the receivers below is best matched with these speakers or any other budget receiver.

Have you tried asking Athena? They might be able to help with a recommendation. If you do, be sure to mention the size of your room as it will have a direct bearing on what will work.

I am using an acurus integrated amp and a cambridge audio cd player. The speakers are bi-wired with "bettercables". Scan Speak 9500 tweeters, SS 8535 woofers, Australian Lacewood veneer with Wenge base (hard to see in the pics. I'll have to get better quality shots up.) You can see the stripe from the veneer tape on the left speaker, I haven't sanded them yet. They look even better in person. That's an SVS sub in the background on the left and a toshiba 3960 DVD and Rega Planar 3 on top of the cabinet on the right. There's also an Outlaw 1050 inside the cabinet that you can barely see above the vinyl.
What you don't see is the Bottlehead Foreplay pre-amp and Dynaco ST-70 amp that actually power these speakers.
nethomas 04-20-04, 09:35 PM Tyler Acoustic's Linbrook Super Monitors. You can see then on Tys audiogon site. Beautiful Bloodwood color(The picture on the site makes them look a little brighter than they really are). These will be the last speakers I ever buy for HT.
