I am now the proud owner of a pair of Vandersteen 5As. I've spent 3 years going to CES and auditioning speakers and these are the best I've heard. :) :) :) :) :) :)

well, I read the first 10 pages then skipped to the last two. Sorry to all those in the middle that I missed.

My speakers are as follows:
Klipsch RB-35's
Klipsch RC-35
(3) Jamo 6.521K4 (In ceiling surround sound) I have not hooked these up yet because my HT room is still about a month off.
Sub: SVS 20-39 PCi

Driven now by a cheap JVC 6018V reciever. To be replaced hopefully tomorrow with a Denon 3805.

I have a killer Panasonic shelf system :(

(Is it bad that my computer speakers (Klipsch Promedia 4.1) beat the everliving hell outta my actual stereo)

Of course, I'm poor and am still in the process of fixing up my first house, so hopefully sometime soon I'll be able to start putting together my first set-up.

Currently:
NHT VT2s Mains
NHT Super-Ones: Center and Surrounds
NHT SW3-P sub.

On order:
Green Mountain Audio Europas: Mains
Undecided on Center
I will keep the SW3P for now, and if not a good match will look at others.

2-channel music is much more important than HT to me!
I believe a great music sound speaker will work for HT, but not all great HT speakers will work well for music.

The reason I chose the Cmabridge T500 fronts is because they are also very good with 2 channel music, and great with the DD 5.1 cd's and DVD's.

kkickk,

Good to see a fan of Scan-speak drivers. I am having Wilmslow Audio in UK build my system using Scanspeak 9700 tweeter, ATC SM75-150 midrange and Volt B2500.1 woofer. I hope to get as great treble as you have from mine.

Last week I would have said Bose Accoustimass 15, but I just upgraded to:

Fronts: Infinity Alpha 50
Center: Infinity Alpha 37C
Surrounds: Infinity Alpha 25ES
Sub: PS12

and there is a huge difference.
However, the combination between the Alpha 50 and the kind of room I have creates some problems. The left front has really bad image. With the amp in stereo mode, I can swear that the sound of the left chanel comes from the surround left. At the same time, the room is very bright which amplifies even more the astounishing highs the CMMD tweeters can produce (grille on and or Re-EQ helps to reduce that effect).

Hi all,
I am just getting into the home theatre/audio scene. I've spent days upon days surfing these threads... love it... kinda addictive actually. I had a local store put together a recommended speaker package for me to go with my Yamahe 2400... the store rep said this would be perfect for my 30x20 room which has a few odd jogs in it... since I am new at this audio stuff, any opinions?

Paradigm Monitor 9's
Paradigm PX-1000 sub
Paradigm CC-370 centre channel
and Paradigm di-pole ADP370s

They sound fabulous in the store, but I know the real test is in my rec room.

THanks guys (and gals), I have learned a ton here.

What do you folks think about dipoles for the rears in a surround system? I guess the trade off is less direct sound for music but a better surround field for home theatre....? Has anyone else tried them? As per my last post, I am looking at the Paradigm ADP-370s going on the assumption (and store subject matter expert) that these will be better for a in-exact radial setup around my couch (eg/ I won;t be able to form the ideal speaker circle)

I know I am new here but it seems to me that there is little value-added in people continuing to telling us what speakers they have... no disrespect, but who cares.. how about talking a bit about speaker technology or pros/cons of speaker types or set up. Otherwise, this thread will continue to be a useless list of 500+ posts; perhaps we should start a new thread....

I just read it this am fast - all 10 pages for me, and was surprised that no one had listed mine which are some of the commonly recommended speakers. Maybe I just read too fast or am less embarrassed than others to post this combo;

Just offed a Bose system and put this together. Wow what a difference. The center channel speaker came before the others by a margin of 2 weeks, so I was listening to music with just it and the sub, and the wife walked in and commented that it sounded better than the old system.

This thread is so huge and goes so far back... I can't remember if I posted or not so here goes and if its a second time I apologize.

Had NHT's floor standers bought 5 years ago with matching center and two 12" powered NHT subs. They were great speakers but I was ready for something different. I gave them all to my brother in law after I got the following.

Rocket dual Sig. 750's
Center 200 (bigfoot)
dual 300's for surrounds

Sub: SVS PB2+

I looked at B&W and Paridigm and the new NHT's before buying. After seeing all the hype here on Rockets and SVS subs I decided to try them and loved them. So much better than what I had. Ought to satisfy me for another 5-10 years....

I use JBL S-CenterII for center, JBLs S38II for surround, and a pair of JBLs "music" speakers for the rear. For my mains, I have Polk SDA-SRS (the big ones) driven by Carver M1.5 or M4.0. Sub was a cheap JBL which I believed I just blew. So I'm using a RS 12" 200w sub for now. Looking for a new sub! This is all controlled by my Yamaha 5790.

Rear: Onix Ref 2's

Not useless at all. There's plenty of threads that discuss speaker technology and the pros and cons of different speaker types. Read one of those threads.

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, the most popular subs in this thread are:

They are on a counter directly behind my seating position (about 18' back, and 2 feet left and right), just very slighly above my ear level. What would you experts recommend I try for the setting?

Who has posted the most completely differant systems (used in the same room).....
What percentage of the systems are "voice matched"....
Who has spent the most money "net" after several upgrades....
Would anyone admit that they like someone elses set-up (in same price range) better than their own

My speakers:

Fronts: Polk RT800i's

Center: Polk CS400i

Surround: Polk f/x500's

Sub: Atlantic Technology 272 PBM.

Love the transparency of my front three. I will probably add Polk RT25i's or RT35i's for the back surrounds when I get in the new house. Some people seem to turn there noses up at the mention of Polk, probably because they are sold at CC and Crutchfield. Hell, I probably had the same opinion UNTIL I listened to them one day at a CC. Perfect example of not judging a book by its cover.

I haven't heard the Polk LSi series yet, but many people on the forum have raved about that line. Among other speakers I have heard and been impressed with are Martin Logan, Paradigm, Source Technologies (a small company out of Connecticut), and B&W. When I eventually upgrade, I'll keep an open mind, but whatever I buy next will have to impress me much more than my current setup does!

Time to update my system, I suppose. I sold my old speakers (Infinity IRS series) and got the following:

Mains: Genesis 6.1
Center: Genesis 6.1c
Surrounds: Genesis 6.1sr
Rears: Genesis 6.1sr
Center Sub: Genesis s4/8
L/R Sub: Genesis s2/12t

The above system works out to a 7.5 system with bass response flat to 16Hz in each channel. They are driven with a Lexicon MC-12B EQ V4/LX-7 preamp/amp combo.

I still haven't figured if I want to run the Lexicon LFE, L/R sub system or Genesis' Distributed LFE. I will do some testing once they are all broken in to determine which sounds best.

Great speakers...them Waveform jobs (too bad the company went under; they were among a handful of truly accurate transducers in the whole world!)...and the sub too (you still needed it 'cuz gives more headroom and lessens playback dynamic compression, imho)...

Custom built super-high-end, 4" two-way (treble is handled by a cone whizzer) x7.1 (the .1 is the subwoofer section; driver had its cone whizzer cut out so is just a subwoofer. Real high-end tweaking stuff! Neat, eh? ).
I call them the Ultra-Virtual reality VR7.1 system. ;)

The best speakers in the world! These things are super-fast (more than the speed of light! ), bass is very tight (more than a virgin! ;) ) and extremely deep (16 Hz!; definitely not like a virgin! :D ), produce plenty of pace and rhythm, are extremely musical (they even play with no electronics connected, imagine that! ), act cameleon-like (they can be made to sound like Wilson Audio, Revel, or even Bose if one wishes! ;) ), and reproduce inter-transients silence notes ( :D ) like no other loudspeaker in this universe could ever wish for. Better than all high-end speakers put together regardless of price. Am a very proud owner!...

I just had to post one just so a crappy system could make the list. :-) Just to make one point it used to be worse.

Center - MTM from a KLH HTIB
Rears - The TM's from the KLH HTIB
Sub - 10" Dayton Shielded DVC in ~3 cuft. Tuned to ~23Hz. Don't have measurements, but I think it extends to the low 20Hz in room. Using old stereo amp for power.

Total cost. - KLH with Sony 5.1 receiver was $299

By all accounts (and there are many) the Scintilla is a speaker that weaves magic. I know. The first time I heard one in 1985, I thought they were room decorations, all the while I seriously searched for the pianist, I was hearing. True story.

Being bipoles, Apogee Scintillas hide from the sounds they are producing. They are ventriloquists. My movie screen appears to be the sound source from every angle.

They also come closest to actually straight-lining from below 20 hZ to beyond hearing of any speaker on, or off the market. The bass, mids, and high ribbons are all the same length, providing seamless response, that can only be described as believable.

Well, there is my humble opinion.

Wouldn't consider any other make for HT and, yes, I've thoroughly checked the other manufacturers out. Mirage, to my ears, is the best also-ran.

It's been quite a ride for me.

I started out with some Maggies 1.6 as my two front channels with Klipsch Forte IIs as my surrounds. No sub....no center channel. Those didn't integrate well. Plus, the amount of room these took up and the compromises that had to be made for set-up made me look elsewhere.

Put the Forte IIs as my mains with a KSS-1 as the center and some S6s as surrounds. Had some sort of Sony sub (can't remember the model number, but it wasn't very good).

Went from a 50" TV to a 60" TV and space became an issue. Klipsch had to go "bye-bye" (although, I kept the Fortes for future use).

Then, went to Ascend Acoustics.....first the 170s and 200s....later upgraded the front soundstage with all 340s and a HSU VTF-2. Nice set-up. I missed the heft of the Klipsch though.

Got rid of the HSU VTF-2 for a HSU VTF-3. Bass was much better but was still missing some low-midrange punch.

Got the Rockets.....250 Mk IIs for the mains, RSC200 (bigfoot) for the center and RSS300s for surrounds. Kept the HSU VTF-3 as I absolutely love that beast. Got my low-midrange punch back with one of the sweetest hi-midranges/ soundstages this side of the Maggies.

Very happy camper right now (but always on the lookout).

Eric,
You could still do the kids room, garage, and the bathrooms. Just sneak them in when nobody is home.:D

Fred

hi fred,
i have them in the the kid's room (Teac) and the play room (Coby).
i use the car systems in the garage (but you've made me think of an upgrade).
my wife has installed an automated "speaker surveillance alarm" to keep watch on the place when she's not home. i've been studying the design, but it's pretty sophisticated (multiple back up systems) and i haven't been able to defeat it... yet.
best,
eric

Hi Eric,
The kids would probably be your best bet to beat the system!!:D. I am sure that they are amenable to persuasion(bribery).
Fred ;)

Plan on replacing the front and rear with paradigm atoms in the future.

It's good to see that someone else still uses the estimable Celestion SL6s. I bought mine in the '80s and they still sound wonderful. My Celestions are my front speakers. The rest of my speakers are legacies from earlier systems, too:

Subs: 2 Hsu HRSW 10 passive subwoofers (circa 1992)
Surrounds and back surrounds: the 4 speakers that came with a moderately expensive Sony HTIB system (circa 1999).
Center: the speakers built in to my 50" RCA DLP TV

Thanks to a Yamaha RX-V2400 receiver and a couple of external Carver 2 channel amps for the fronts and the subs (also '80s vintage) mine has turned out to be a surprisingly sweet sounding HT system. I may upgrade sometime but for the moment I'm a happy camper.

I've only got a few:

Full range speakers:

PSB Image B15 (bookshelf)
Infinity SM-185 (large bookshelf)
Boston HD5 (small bookshelf)

Subwoofers:

Yamaha YST-305
Dayton 10"

I had a pair of Infinity Alpha 50s and Primus 150s for a while, but decided they were too big for my little dorm room :p Being in a dorm has saved me a ton of money, because I am always finding speakers I want to buy and try out. The lack of space keeps me in check.
